In short

Episode topic: How mentally strong people prepare for bad days by treating resilience as a trainable, dynamic process—deciding responses in advance using specific if-then plans, emotional regulation (not suppression), and “visible” behavioral habits under pressure.

Guest backgrounds

No named guests appear in the transcript. The episode references Dusty May (basketball coach) as a mindset example, plus research from sports resilience literature and leadership performance studies.

Key claims

Resilience isn’t a fixed trait; it’s what you do. Emotional denial harms performance; cognitive reappraisal and situational modification help. Use a four-step reset: notice/name feelings, reframe as information, choose behavior.

Notable examples

If defensive, ask one more question before explaining; if ignored, wait then restate in one sentence; if rejected, review facts not catastrophize; if you bomb the first minutes, stay and reset. Challenge: write your stressors, hijacking emotion, bad reaction, and if-then response.

1:16Johnny:They're calling this a battle for the fans. What do you say to that, Rumi? It's not a battle. So glad the Saja boys could take breakfast and give our meal the rest of the day. It is an honor to share. No, it's our honor. It is our larger honor. No, really. Stop. You can really feel the respect in this battle. Pick a meal to pick a side. And participate in McDonald's while supplies last. As some of you know, I'm a Michigan guy. So when Dusty May talks mindset, I pay attention. But the thing that hit me wasn't really at all about basketball. It was this idea that the best performers don't wait for adversity to show up before deciding who they're actually going to be.

1:56That's the whole game. Most people think resilience is about being calm when life punches you in the face. It's not. Real resilience is deciding in advance how to handle the punch.

2:09Johnny:Today, we're breaking down how to build personal resilience so that when life gets messy, awkward, unfair, emotional or high pressure, you don't just react, you respond.

2:28Johnny:A lot of people think resilience is something you're born with. Some people are just mentally tough and the rest are not. That is not how the research frames it. The sport resilience literature describes resilience as a dynamic process, not a fixed personality trait. In plain English, resilience is not something that you own. It's something that you do. So resilience is not never getting rattled, never feeling anxious or pretending nothing affects you. It's recovering faster, thinking clearly under pressure, regulating emotion, choosing behavior on purpose and coming back without spiraling. That's the best part.

3:12Johnny:It's trainable and you can start now. And this is exactly what I love about the Dusty May piece. He talks about anticipating what could go wrong for the team before it happens and then deciding how they respond ahead of time. For an individual, that means stop acting surprised by your own patterns. You already know your predictable stressors. Rejection, conflict, criticism, being ignored, awkward silence, comparison, a bad meeting. A rough text. Getting thrown off your game socially. This is where the if-then planning matters. The evidence on MC2 says people do better when they identify the obstacle and pair it with a specific response.

4:00Not vague motivation. A script. So if I get defensive in a conversation, then I ask one more question before I explain myself. If I get ignored in a meeting, then I wait. re-enter calmly and restate my point in one sentence. If I feel rejected after a social interaction, then I do not catastrophize for two hours. I review the facts. If I bomb the first five minutes of an event, then I stay another 20 minutes and reset.

4:32Johnny:That's resilience in a usable form. You're not trying to become invincible. You're building a response pattern to adversity. Now, a lot of people here be resilient and think it means just shut down your emotions. That's the wrong move. Research on leadership performance found that suppressant was negatively related to performance, while cognitive reappraisal and situational modification were positively related to performance. So the answer is not emotional denial. It's emotional regulation. So here's a four-step reset. notice what am i feeling right now two name it i'm embarrassed threatened angry ashamed rejected three reframe it this feeling is information not instruction and four choose the behavior What behavior serves me best here?

5:36Johnny:Your emotions get a vote, but they do not get total control. And that's a better message than feelings aren't facts. It actually respects the emotion without obeying it. Dusty talks about having one player who modeled the standards so clearly that everyone else could just point to them and say, that's what it looks like. I used to wake up congested every morning. I tried everything. It turns out indoor air was the culprit. Air Doctor is the only air purifier we use now. Fewer odors, reduced allergy symptoms, better sleep. Air Doctor's three-stage filtration captures particles about 100 times smaller than what typical air purifiers can remove.

6:17Johnny:I'm talking dust, pollen, mold spores, pet dander, even wildfire smoke, bacteria, viruses, odors, VOCs. Whisper quiet operation, not loud like others on the market. Auto mode ensures optimum air 24-7. Change filter reminders so there's no guesswork. 98 % of Air Doctor customers say their home's air feels safer, cleaner, and healthier. Over 93 % notice fewer allergy symptoms, less congestion, less stuffy nose, less itchy eyes. Air Doctor won Newsweek's Reader Choice Award for Best Air Purifier. For an individual, this becomes what does resilience look like in behavior, not in theory, not I want to be mentally stronger, more like I answer pressure with slower speech. I keep my posture when I'm uncomfortable. I do not chase reassurance the second I feel insecure. I stay in the room when I want to withdraw. I ask clarifying questions instead of getting reactive. Resilience gets real when it becomes visible, a tone, a pause, a posture, a sentence, a pattern. So instead of admiring resilience as some abstract trait, you define what it looks like when you do it.

9:24Johnny:People say they want confidence, composure and resilience, but they keep treating those like moods. They're closer to habits than moods. You build them through repetition under manageable pressure. The sports resilience literature supports that resilience involves capacities you can develop over time and deliberate systems matter more than heroic willpower in the moment. Start small. Stay in one hard conversation 10 % longer. Recover from one awkward moment faster. Write one if-then plan before a stressful event and practice one visible resilient behavior all week. Examples. So when I feel myself rushing, I will slow down my first sentence.

10:13When I feel rejected, I will not invent a story without evidence. And when I feel pressure in a room, I will plant my feet and breathe before speaking. So here's this week's challenge. Write this down. One situation that reliably throws you off. One emotion that usually hijacks you. One bad reaction you want to stop and one if-then response you'll use instead. So here's an example. If I start feeling dismissed in a group, then I stop proving, slow down, and contribute one strong sentence instead of overtaking.

10:57Johnny:That's personal resilience. Not hype, not affirmations, but an actual plan. Evidence gathering helps in building resilience because it keeps you from going off the path. And that's what I love in the X Factor Accelerator because our members are so analytical, but they often don't realize that they haven't weighed the evidence. So they have a reaction. They've been in a situation that's pressure filled, and maybe it's tied to a past experience where they felt some level of frustration, failure, shame or embarrassment. And that pattern then becomes the story they tell themselves instead of unpacking the evidence.

11:36Johnny:And that's why I see their eyes light up as their analytical mind starts to go through those three questions. Every time you tell yourself that story, you only reinforce it. And it only takes three, four times of you telling yourself that story before it comes evidence when in actuality all it is is a thought that turned into a story that you deemed as evidence asking yourself behind that what is the evidence or data that backs up that thought and for a lot of people you know can you write a peer-reviewed paper on that evidence Is there enough evidence there that will hold under a court of law?

12:24There's a simple mechanism right there. The second question is asking yourself, could there be another reason for why I think this? If you're agitated in the moment, you have lots of thoughts going on and your brain is looking for one to pick out to use as an excuse. That doesn't make it real. And then lastly, are you making these situations? Are you personalizing them? Are you making them about yourself? And again, we put ourselves at the center of everything because that's the only way that we can make sense of the world around us.

13:03Johnny:and Dusty shared in getting his team ready for the season. They decided in August how they would respond in March and how we feel is usually a natural chemical reaction in our brain, but we have to disassociate ourselves from those feelings and decide how we're actually gonna respond in the moment because ultimately we're reevaluated based on our behavior, not our emotions. So it's not about how you were feeling, where you frustrated, sad, angry, but it's more about what you did with that emotion and how you responded to it that matters. Most people are still trying to perform better in the moment.

13:41Johnny:That's why they keep breaking down in the same situations. The X-Factor Accelerator is where you fix that at the root. You train the patterns underneath the pressure so your default responses stop working against you. If you can anticipate what your issues are going to be, talk about them and decide how you're going to respond, you're way ahead of the game. From the publisher

Most people think resilience shows up in the moment. It doesn’t.

AJ and Johnny break down why resilience is a system — not a personality trait — and how top performers decide their responses before pressure hits. Instead of reacting emotionally, they use simple “if-then” plans, emotional regulation, and repeatable behaviors to stay grounded.

This episode gives you a practical framework to stop spiraling, recover faster, and respond with intention when it counts.
