The episode emphasizes the importance of small, repeatable exchanges in building interpersonal closeness and expanding one’s social network.
Key Concepts
- Networking Misconceptions: Networking is often perceived as exhausting, especially for introverts; however, it can be effortless with the right approach.
- The Heliyon Study (2025): A study demonstrating that brief, interactive chats can significantly enhance feelings of closeness compared to non-interactive communication.
- Micro-Moments: The idea that small, consistent interactions (or "micro deposits") are more effective in building relationships than infrequent, grand gestures.
- Weak Ties: The concept of "weak ties," which refers to acquaintances or distant connections that can provide unique opportunities and information, thereby enhancing one's network.

- Interactivity Matters: Engaging in brief, back-and-forth conversations is more impactful than passive communication.
- Weak Ties Enhance Networks: Interactions with acquaintances can lead to significant opportunities, as they connect different social circles.
- Micro-Deposits: Making small conversational efforts can lead to greater feelings of belonging and connection.
Practical Applications
- Encourage Small Talk: Introverts should engage in more small talk, as it can lead to unexpected connections and opportunities.
- Practice Networking Skills: Use social workshops or "dojo" sessions to practice micro-connection skills in a supportive environment.
- Create Opportunities: Seek out everyday moments, such as brief exchanges while running errands, to build weak ties.
Conclusion The episode wraps up with a call to action for listeners to rethink their networking strategies. Instead of forcing deep connections, they should focus on making consistent, pleasant interactions that can gradually compound into a robust social network. The hosts invite listeners to apply their learnings through the X Factor Accelerator, where practical networking skills are honed.

1:49Johnny:if you're introverted, networking sounds like a full-time job. But building a network isn't built on big conversations. It's actually built on tiny ones. And there's new research showing even a few minutes of real back and forth nudges that closeness up.
2:12AJ Jacobs:Most people wait for the perfect conversation and then wonder why nothing compounds. Your network isn't a list of contacts. It's a trail of small moments. You don't build it with one epic hangout. You build it with repeatable micro touches. Introverts win here because consistency beats intensity.
2:34Johnny:And that's what I love. It's actual small deposits that beat those rare grand gestures.
2:40AJ Jacobs:AJ, this is where our problem that we have with technology comes into place because now people aren't having those small interactions like they used to. I've told this story on the podcast many times where the small things like going to the bank and standing in line and chatting up the person next to you, where now we're not even going to the bank. And if you are, you're just pulling out your phone and scrolling. Those were the moments that allowed us to make those small micro interactions and make friends, build moments and build with those repeatable micro touches were part of our lives. And now it's everyone's scheduling everything and half of us are having our AIs scheduling.
3:31Johnny:And the big problem is that people think closeness requires depth. So they avoid starting anything unless it can become a 60-minute meaningful talk. And that belief actually kills your networking momentum.
3:44AJ Jacobs:The momentum is what creates opportunity.
3:47Johnny:Now, there's a 2025 paper in Helion that basically is a microscope on this. Digital connection, real bonding. Brief online chats boost interpersonal closeness regardless of the conversational topic. Now, what they did is they had strangers exchange a brief written chat under five minutes in an interactive back and forth condition. Now, the control conditions were sneaky. People wrote on the same topic for the same amount of time, knowing someone else was also writing, but without interacting. Then they measured closeness, physical, interpersonal, and psychological.
4:21AJ Jacobs:That's clean. Same time, same topic. Only difference is interaction.
4:27Johnny:The interactive chats produce significantly higher interpersonal closeness than the non-interactive writing condition. Inside those interactive chats, three things predicted closeness. One, it felt pleasant. Two, it felt somewhat intimate. And three, the other person's contribution felt like it mattered. Translation is, it's less, what did you talk about? And more, did it feel like a real exchange?
4:52AJ Jacobs:Closeness doesn't require depth. It requires a signal of real attention. They tested abstract versus concrete topics, philosophical, emotional versus stuff like food, animals, tools. They didn't find strong, consistent advantages for one topic over the other. They replicated that quality of the exchange, explained closeness more than what the topic was. So you don't need deep topics. You need a human moment.
5:23Johnny:A thoughtful wardrobe comes down to pieces that mix well and last. That's where Quince shines. Premium fabrics, considered design, everyday essentials that just feel effortless to wear.
5:35AJ Jacobs:Lightweight cashmere sweaters, short-sleeved Mongolian cashmere polos, linen bottoms, tees, and 100 % Pima cotton. Versatile pieces that make your wardrobe work season to season.
5:49Johnny:Quince works directly with top factories and cuts out the middlemen. You're not paying for brand markup or fancy retail stores, just quality clothing.
5:57AJ Jacobs:The cashmere is 100 % Mongolian. Same stuff luxury brands use. The Pima cotton is long staple, stays soft, doesn't pill. European jersey linen is breathable and lightweight. Everything is built to hold up.
6:11Johnny:I gotta say, these linen shorts have become my go-to. They don't wrinkle like cheap linen does. They work with everything and they didn't cost a fortune either.
6:20AJ Jacobs:Stop over complicating your wardrobe. You don't need a closet full of options. You need the pieces that work.

Unfortunately, traditional big wireless carriers also like keeping my money. After years of overpaying for wireless, I got fed up with crazy high bills, bogus fees, and free perks that just cost more in the long run.
7:04AJ Jacobs:Stop overpaying for wireless just because that's how it's always been. Mint Mobile exists to fix that.
7:10Johnny:Premium wireless plans starting at$15 a month. And all plans come with high-speed data and unlimited talk and text delivered on the nation's largest 5G network.

So avoiding all of that small talk actually hurts your opportunities for closeness. And this isn't just online chat.
8:12Johnny:Weak ties actually matter in real life. Sandstrom and Dunn in 2014 found people reported greater happiness and belonging on days when they interacted with more weak ties, meaning classmates and acquaintances. That's the compound interest. Tiny interactions are not neutral. They change how connected you feel to the world and they make the next conversation even more connected.
8:36AJ Jacobs:Your day gets better when your social parameter gets wider. Then there's the classic network science. Mark Granavettas, the strength of weak ties. Weak ties matter because they bridge different circles. Information and opportunities travel through them. So the effortless strategy isn't forcing deep relationships. It's stacking small moments that keep more bridges alive.
9:03Johnny:Exactly. We like to think of our network as the impact of the relationships we have when in actuality, our network is built on these weak ties. The friends of friends, the co-workers, the acquaintances, the people we're interacting in our day to day life. Just like you said, if you're sharing those conversations at the bank, that person can become a weak tie for you. And strong ties comfort you. Weak ties move you. That's the key to networking and making it effortless. And that's exactly what happened with our client, Brandon. When he joined the X Factor Accelerator, he had just moved to a new role at a new company.
9:39Johnny:And he realized that since COVID, he was keeping his head down at work, avoiding the chit chat with coworkers and became a bit of a hardworking recluse. During our conversation formula dojo session, he did some reps with this partner and realized that he had been avoiding so many of these tiny opportunities at work. That small talk avoidance was actually hurting his career in a big way.
10:00AJ Jacobs:We always talk about how COVID ruined the water cooler talk. Well, what Brandon found out was that's the compounding. Familiarity turns to trust. If micro conversations are to deposit, the skill is making them pleasant, personal, and responsive. Most people can't self-calibrate that. You need reps and mirrors.
10:24Johnny:Exactly. You don't rise to your intention. You default to your training. So where are you getting your reps? Where are you practicing these opportunities to create weak ties? That's what makes networking effortless, even if you're introverted. And that's exactly what we train in the X Factor Accelerator. We run a weekly social dojo where you practice these micro connections in realistic scenarios with partners, warm openers, follow-ups, sharing small personal details without oversharing and leaving clean breadcrumbs for the other person. Then you get live mirrors. So these skills actually install.
