Episode Highlights

Introduction

  • Cicero's Influence: 2,000 years ago, Cicero effectively swayed public opinion, highlighting the timeless nature of persuasive communication.
  • Three-Step Model for Persuasion: The episode outlines a simplified version of Cicero's six-step approach, focusing on:
  • Frame the problem to define reality.
  • Layer your reasons (from facts to emotions).
  • Close with intensity.

---

Key Concepts

  1. The Importance of Framing
  2. Framing Defined: The act of defining the problem in a way that shapes the audience’s perception.
  3. Effectiveness of Leaders: Framing is a powerful tool in leadership; the first person to define a problem often dictates the conversation.
  4. Example Application: In meetings, a shift in framing (e.g., from "conversion problem" to "trust problem") can radically alter focus and energy.
  1. Layering Reasons
  2. Sequence of Argumentation:
  3. Fact: Present undeniable data.
  4. Value: Connect the fact to a shared principle.
  5. Emotion: End with a personal and relatable emotional appeal.
  6. Neuroscience Insight: Effective storytelling synchronizes brain activity between speaker and listener, enhancing understanding and emotional resonance.
  1. Closing with Intensity
  2. Intensity vs. Volume: Intensity is about conviction and belief, not loudness.
  3. Impact of Effective Closures: People remember the peak and the end of experiences more than the middle; thus, a strong conclusion is critical.
  4. Key Elements for a Strong Close:
  5. Why now?
  6. Why you?
  7. What happens next?

---

Practical Applications

  • Self-Assessment Questions: Before a meeting, consider:
  • What’s the emotional consequence of this issue?
  • Why does it matter now?
  • What’s the simplest way to express this so everyone understands?

Final Recap

  • Cicero's Three Steps to Persuasion:
  • Frame it: Define the situation clearly.
  • Layer it: Build a compelling case that moves through logic to emotion.
  • Close it: End with a powerful call to action that makes the audience feel the urgency.

He was conducting emotion and he used a repeatable model.

0:41Fast forward to now, the tools are different, but the psychology hasn't changed. You don't need six steps to move a room. You need three. Frame the problem, layer your reasons, close with intensity.

1:03And once you see how Cicero's model maps onto modern influence from sales calls to investor decks, you'll never wing another conversation again. And if you're listening to the show, I hope you're not winging conversations because every conversation you have has intention to it, either to lead, influence, or connect, or even all three. And this framework will give you the tools to do that. And we're also going to combine a little bit as well with the new tools of the age, social media today. So this is gonna be a tree. Now, Cicero's six-part formula gave structure to chaos, opening, background, outline, proof, refutation, and conclusion.

1:49It wasn't about showing off intellect. It was about guiding their attention. because even back then, people tuned out halfway through. Now, does that sound familiar? In a world of 90-second reels and endless notifications, structure isn't optional. It's your anchor. Now, the good news is if you master three of Cicero's core moves, you can control almost any room. So what we're teaching today is the fast version, the three-step model for the modern world. Frame the problem, layer the reasons, and close with intensity. Now, what do we mean by frame the problem? Framing is the most underused tool in persuasion.

2:30Most people will start with information. Leaders start with meaning. The first person to define reality owns it. Now, let's talk about a modern example. Let's say it's an executive meeting. You're in a product meeting, and the team's arguing about why sales are down. Someone might say, hey, our marketing isn't converting. Another says, we need better features. Then the CMO stands up and reframes it. We don't have a conversion problem. We have a trust problem. In one sentence, she shifts the lens and instantly the room shifts. Everyone's now focused on credibility and not clicks. That's the power of framing.

3:10It changes what people think about, not just what they think. Cicero did the same thing. When Rome was on the brink of panic, he didn't talk about politics. He framed the rebellion as a violation of virtue, not a difference in policy. And that's what made it unforgettable. Right. He didn't just argue facts. He defined the moral battlefield. And in any modern setting, whether you're leading a team or pitching a client, the first voice to frame the issues becomes the one that everyone reacts to. And you can see this all around you. Why is there so much turmoil in our political discussions? Well, every faction, every group has a different narrative to what that problem is.

3:53And if people are arguing about the narratives, it becomes which one is true. But different facts belonging to different people give each one of their narratives credit. So now we have all this squabbling and fighting going on because with mass media, we're not getting fed ABC's narrative and NBC's narrative. We're now being fed hundreds, thousands, if not millions of narratives. Now, there's real science behind this. Cameron Anderson at Berkeley found that clarity and confidence, not expertise, determine who emerges as a leader in the group. Framing is clarity. When you say this is the real problem, you become the psychological authority.

4:41Before every meeting, ask yourself these three questions. One, what's the emotional consequence of this issue? Two, why does it matter now? And three, what's the simplest way to say it so everyone feels it? If you could answer that in one line, you framed the problem just like Cicero would have. Johnny, remember we started this business? I feel like I was drowning in decisions. Website design, payment processing, customer management. The overwhelm was real. Every day brought five new problems we have no idea how to solve. Exactly. When you're building something from scratch, you need a partner who's got your back.

5:15For millions of businesses, that partner is Shopify. Shopify is the commerce platform behind millions of businesses around the world and 10 % of all e-commerce in the US. From household names like Mattel and Gymshark to brands just getting started. Here's what makes it brilliant. Shopify gives you everything. Beautiful, ready-to-use templates so you don't need to be a designer. AI tools that write your product descriptions and enhance your photos. Plus, built-in marketing tools to create email and social campaigns. It's like having an entire team behind you. And the best part? Shopify handles all the complex stuff.

Every plan comes with high-speed data and unlimited talk and text on the nation's largest 5G network. You can even use your own phone, keep your number, and bring all your contacts with you. Upfront payment of$45 required, equivalent to$15 per month. Limited time new customer offer for the first three months only.

7:10Speeds may slow above 35 gigabytes on an unlimited plan. Taxes and fees extra. See Mint Mobile for details. AJ, this is also in our communication as business owners and in my communication with other people, if they have problems or issues that they're trying to work through, I will always ask them to define what it is for them. That way, I gain what their perspective is, what their narrative is. And that allows me to offer different perspectives, different narratives that may have more clarity or may lead them to a better solution than they were looking at. Now, step two, we have to layer our reasons.

7:53Once you've set the frame, your job isn't to flood people with proof. It's to guide them through the layers of belief. And Cicero stacked arguments like stairs, fact, then value, then emotion. Imagine a founder pitching investors for renewable energy. They start with the fact every year the United States wastes enough excess energy to power France. Then they connect it to a value. Waste isn't just inefficient. It's irresponsible. We owe the next generation better stewardship. And finally, they finish with an emotion. My son asked me last week why our rivers are catching fire again. I don't ever want to have that conversation twice.

8:32That's the sequence. Information, principle, emotion, working in perfect rhythm. Most people start with emotion and sound manipulative. Others drown people and data and sound robotic. But when you build from fact to value to emotion, your logic feels inevitable. It lands in both hemispheres of the brain, reason and residence. It's the perfect balance. And here's the science. Princeton neuroscientist Yuri Hassan found that stories synchronize brain activity between the speaker and the listener. They literally align neural patterns. So when your reasoning flows naturally through fact, value, and emotion, your audience feels the logic.

9:16They don't just hear it. And that's why the best communicators don't argue harder. They argue higher. They climb the ladder of what's true to what's right to what's human. So here's the pro tip. Use the layer ladder. Start with an undeniable fact that everyone agrees on. Then tie it to a value that they already hold and finish with the emotional truth that demands action. That's how you make your point stick long after the conversation ends. AJ, I use this in all of my TikToks and Reels and it works wonders. And not only that, this is where people begin squabbling in the comments because everyone who is reading that, their values are different.

9:59The emotions that they feel when they watch that video differ. So as somebody holds on dearly to what I had just said, others are attacking it because of how it made them feel. And of course, as everyone knows, this becomes comment bait and of course, giving you more juice to your videos. Now, step three, we have to close with intensity. Cicero believed the close should leave no air in the room. He ended with conviction so powerful people had to decide right there. And here's the thing. Intensity doesn't mean volume. It means belief. and that's what intensity does. It moves people from thinking to committing.

10:43You can't lead people to action with, let's just see what happens. You close with a clear future that they can step into and if you read our newsletters, you watch any sales letter videos, you will see that there is always a call to action that is either your paradise or a hell that you're trying to avoid. And Elizabeth Loftus' research on memory shows that people remember the peak and the end of experiences more than the middle. Your closing is your peak. That's what sticks. End every message with three clear signals. Why now? Why you? What happens next? Now, the Romans had six steps. You only need three.

11:27Frame the problem, meaning define reality. Layer your reasons, so climb from logic to emotion. And close with intensity. Make people feel what's at stake. That's the modern art of persuasion. Same psychology, but sharper tools. And if you want to measure how strong your frame and emotional delivery are, take our Influence Index at theartofcharm.com slash influence.
