Podcast Notes: The Elicitation Protocol | Social Intel Brief
Overview In this episode of *The Art of Charm*, hosts AJ and Johnny introduce the 3L Protocol, a system designed to help individuals enhance their conversational skills and build connections quickly. This protocol is especially useful for networking, dating, and professional interactions, allowing listeners to transform small talk into meaningful conversations.
Key Concepts
Elicitation
- Definition: The ability to discern what others are thinking or feeling without direct questioning; a key skill for creating deep connections.
- Importance: Helps differentiate between casual chatter and impactful conversation, enabling individuals to engage more deeply with others.
High-Value Individuals
- Characteristics: High-value people are often sought after in social settings; they are typically gracious and willing to engage.
- Social Intelligence: These individuals prioritize emotional understanding over mere conversational effort. They respond better to social intelligence, making it crucial to connect on a deeper level.
The 3L Protocol
Listen, Label, Leverage
- Listen
- Focus on emotional signals rather than details.
- Identify three core elements in conversations:
- Goal: What the person wants.
- Constraint: What is blocking them from achieving their goal.
- Emotional Cue: How the constraint affects their feelings.
- Label
- Reflect back the true meaning of what the person shared.
- Use labels to show understanding, which encourages further openness.
- Important distinction: Labeling is not giving advice, but rather mirroring the person's feelings and thoughts.
- Leverage
- Use insights gained to establish trust through micro-favors.
- A micro-favor is a small, specific offer of help that adds value without pressure.
- The goal is to create a natural connection in a short span of time.
Practical Applications
- Networking Events: Use the protocol to gain attention from high-value individuals by demonstrating social intelligence rather than merely seeking shared opportunities.
- Dating: The same principles can be applied to build rapport and create deeper emotional connections.
- Professional Settings: Employ the protocol to stand out among colleagues and build trust quickly.
Examples & Scenarios
- Networking Example: Recognizing when someone expresses feelings of being overwhelmed during a conversation and reflecting that back with understanding, followed by offering a helpful introduction.
- Social Gathering: If someone mentions frustrations with a hobby (e.g., cooking), label their emotion and suggest a simple recipe, thereby creating a connection through shared interest and assistance.
- Workplace Scenario: Identifying stress in a colleague related to chaotic systems and offering a streamlined template can help foster collaboration and support.
Conclusion The hosts emphasize that conversation can become effortless and impactful by applying the 3L Protocol. By listening for emotional cues, accurately labeling the needs and feelings of others, and leveraging those insights to provide value through micro-favors, individuals can turn surface-level interactions into meaningful relationships.

That's what we call elicitation. It's the difference between surface level chatter and real conversational intelligence. AJ, this is one of my favorite things that we teach intelligence operatives in the military, but also we work on this in the X Factor Accelerator as well. In fact, last night was one of those sessions. And what I was telling the guys is in any social event, whether it's a networking event or a special party, there's going to be one to five people who can impact your career.
0:45But here's what's important for you to understand. If those people can impact your career, they can impact everybody's career. Therefore, they're highly sought after. That's why they're high value. And those high value folks who are gracious, who are putting themselves out there. They're going to try to give everybody an opportunity and chat with everybody. So you will get a window of opportunity to be seen, heard, and remembered by these folks. This elicitation protocol allows you to insert yourself, position yourself as the solution to a problem or struggle they are having, and have an opportunity to follow up with them one-on-one afterward.
1:42Exactly. And most people just try to connect through talking and trying to find those shared opportunities. But the top performers actually connect through noticing. And today we're going to show you the simplest way to do that. It's three steps. And as Johnny was saying, it is how you give value to high value people. So if you've ever felt intimidated, you've ever wondered to yourself, well, what can I do to stand out? That person maybe has higher status. Maybe they're ahead of you professionally, or maybe it's just at a social event and they seem to know everyone. How do you get on their radar?
2:15This is exactly how you do it. High value people judge others on their social intelligence. So by learning this elicitation protocol, this is going to get you on that radar. And people don't open up because you asked the right questions. They open up because they feel understood. And that's the part that most people miss. You can understand someone without needing to actually dig or pry or hammer them with questions. People will reveal their motives, frustrations and priorities in casual conversation all the time. In fact, research from Harvard's negotiation project shows that when people feel understood, not questioned, they They disclose more, they trust faster, and they build stronger rapport.
3:02So that means reflection, not questioning, drives rapid disclosure. When someone feels named, they actually feel known. So let's talk about it. This is our 3L elicitation protocol. The first thing you have to do or the first L is listen. And you're not listening for details. You're listening for what we call signals. When somebody talks, three signals almost always show up. There is a goal. That is what they want. With any goal, there is a constraint that's blocking them. And there will also be an emotional cue about how that constraint makes them feel. You don't need a full story. You just need these three pieces.
3:54And that leads to the second L, which is label. So after we've listened, we have to reflect back the real meaning, not the surface words. And a label isn't advice. It's a mirror back to them. Again, showing them that you understand that. It tells the other person, I caught the real thing you were saying, which makes them open up even more naturally. Now, the third L is really powerful, and that's leverage. You turn that insight into their trust through a tiny favor, giving them value. This is the most difficult part. This is why we practice it in our X Factor Accelerator. Because most people, when they hear a goal and a constraint, they go into problem-solving mode.
4:41And that's great when you have time, when you have one-on-one, when you're hanging out with your best friend, you can help them work through something. When you're at an event and you're included in the circle with that person that can impact your career, you're going to hear things and you have to be able to act fast. This is why we leverage a micro favor. A micro favor is small, specific and easy to accept. It proves value without pressure. That's how trust forms in under 30 seconds, naturally and not performatively. The holidays are here, and if you're running a business, you know that's when things get real.

Let's say we're at that networking event that Johnny was talking about. I walk up to him and I hear Johnny say, I gotta tell you, yeah, this rebuilding after a round of layoffs, honestly, it's been overwhelming.
7:53So let's break that down. What was the goal? Well, for Johnny, rebuilding means getting the team back on track. what's the constraint? Well, now there's a lot of instability after those layoffs that Johnny is feeling. And what's the emotion? Well, in this case, he actually labeled it. He said, overwhelming. So once you've recognized that, you wanna label it back to Johnny. Something like, sounds like you're rebuilding and running at the same time. I know someone who just went through this. Do you want an introduction? Again, this is a reflecting back of Johnny's exact problem and what he's feeling.
8:31And then a micro favor, an offer of help and support of giving that person value. And it does not matter if they take the introduction or not. They felt understood by you and you stood out from the crowd at that event. Let's say it's a social gathering. Johnny walks up to me and I say, man, I've been trying to get into cooking again, but I just never know where to start. All right. Here's the breakdown, right? The goal is creativity and flow state. Constraint. Decision overload. Something that we all experience. The emotion is frustration. So the label, it seems like you want it to feel fun and not like a project.
9:16The micro favor, hey, there's a simple three ingredient recipe I love. I'll shoot it over to you. So now you're recognizing how simple it is. In one sentence, I was able to recognize a goal, understand a constraint, find the emotion and offer that favor without digging and prying and asking, what am I cooking? What's the frustration? How does it make you feel? you could see how those types of questions would put the other person on edge when they're just trying to share something about themselves. And that's a common pitfall that we see with a lot of our X Factor Accelerator members is they try to pry and dig more information by just asking a series of questions.
9:56But if you listen closely, it's all embedded in that simple sentence. My frustration is now put at ease because Johnny's offering me a three ingredient recipe that I could try out. Now, let's say you're on a first date. All right. So I've been traveling more this year, needed something different. What's the goal for Johnny? Well, it's novelty. He's been traveling because he needed something different. What's the constraint? He's feeling probably routine fatigue, a bit frustrated of being in the same thing over and over again, the monotony. What's the label of emotion? Excitement. How would I label it in conversation?
10:34I'd say something like, Well, it feels like you're chasing experience that wake you up a little. So what could be a great micro favor in this situation? Hey, Johnny, there's a hidden hot spring about two hours north of LA with a killer overlook. You want me to shoot you the pin? Recognizing that Johnny's seeking excitement, breaking out of his routine, I'm offering a favor in something that's really easy, a piece of information that I have that could help him find and explore outside of LA. All right, here's another one. Maybe I'm talking to AJ as a coworker. I say to Johnny, these new accounts are awesome, but keeping everything straight is just chaos.
11:09What's the goal here? AJ wants to perform well. The constraint? Messy systems. The emotion? Well, we all know that is stressful. So here's the label. Man, it sounds like you're doing two jobs, the work and the organization. What's the favor? I got a great one-page flow that I use. Want the template? So in that moment, it didn't take a lot of Johnny's effort, but it was the recognition that I was feeling stress and the offer of something to help ease my stress that stands out. So this is why it's so important. You're not going into events, extracting information. We are looking to create alignment.
11:53The more alignment we create, the more invested people are in us. Listening reveals these patterns. Labeling it earns their trust. and we can leverage it to build value. That quick favor, that offer of help and support when someone feels understood by us goes a long way. And when you run these three, conversation becomes effortless. And as I said at the start of this, at social events where there is high value people that could impact your life and career, it's not easy to have their time. They're talking with everybody. Everybody wants something from them. Here you show your emotional intelligence and an opportunity to give and show your value, which will then get you the follow-up and the time that you do want.
12:46This is how you turn small talk into a connection. Strangers into allies and rooms into opportunities. these.
