Fewer than 20 % of laughs happen after something funny. The rest, well, they're just signals. I hear you. I want to connect with you.

1:13That's what we're saying with laughter. Today, we're going to break down why laughter is one of the most powerful forms of emotional intelligence and how you can use it to instantly build rapport.

1:30Now, laughter isn't just about comedy. It's about connection. A recent guest, Charles Duhigg, shared with us. There was this researcher at the University of Maryland who for over a year, he would like ride buses and sit in shopping malls and just eavesdrop on people's conversations. And he actually recorded a number of them. And one of the things he did is he counted how many times people laughed. And we sort of assumed that laughter is something that happens when we hear something funny. But he found that 80 % of the time when people laughed, it had nothing to do with anyone saying something funny, right?

2:04Like there was no joke that was attempted. There was no humor. The reason we laugh is it's a social response. We laugh to show someone that we want to connect with them. And when they laugh back, the social reciprocity, the most natural thing on earth, when they laugh back, they're showing that they want to connect with us as well. Laughter sometimes happens when we see something funny, but most of the time it happens when we want to feel good and we want someone else to feel good and we want to connect with them. Think about the last time you were with a friend and laughed at something dumb. It wasn't the words, it was the vibe.

2:38And that laugh was basically shorthand for I feel you or I wanna keep this going. Now here's the key. It's not just laughing together. It's laughing at the same intensity. If I'm belly laughing and you're giving me a weak chuckle, my brain is not registering a connection. It registers a misalignment. That mismatch sends the signals of rejection or even social dominance. And everyone's felt this. You're laughing so hard you can't breathe or your friend gives you a polite smile. Instantly, it fills off. Like, what are we even doing in this moment? That mismatch actually breaks rapport. This is the matching principle.

3:22Social intelligence isn't just mirroring behavior. It's aligning in a way that shows I genuinely want to connect with you. Neuroscience studies show people can tell genuine laughter from fake laughter in as little as one second. And this is across cultures. We recognize the difference. Genuine laughter is variable in pitch, breathy, and sometimes even uncontrollable. Forced laughter is typically monotone, rhythmic, almost mechanical. If you're still overpaying for wireless, it's time to say yes to saying no. That's Mint Mobile's whole thing. Their favorite word is no. And Quince delivers every time. Quince has all the fall staples you actually want to wear on repeat, like 100 % Mongolian cashmere sweater starting at just$60, classic fit denim, and real leather and wool outerwear that looks sharp and holds up.

5:14I've actually got my eye on their suede trucker jacket. It's perfect for layering and it hits that balance of casual but still put together. What I like about Quince is they partner directly with ethical factories and top artisans. By cutting out the middlemen, you get premium quality at half the cost of similar brands. And it's not just clothing. I love their sheets. They have items like bedding and travel accessories. Quince has really become a go-to for me across the board. Same here. Everything I grab from Quince has held up and it doesn't wreck my budget. Layer up this fall with pieces that feel as good as they look.

Quince.com slash charm. And that's why laughing at your boss's jokes never land. And people can hear you, feel it. And suddenly, trust is gone. Authenticity is baked into laughter at a brain level. And when laughter is genuine, something else happens. Your brains literally sync up. EEG scans show shared laughter creates brain-to-brain coupling. That's real-time alignment. And you have to keep in mind, how this works is when people sync up, people open up.

6:38Think of laughter as a kind of emotional bid. Just like a smile, sigh or gasp, it's a request for connection. When you respond with laughter of similar energy, you're turning towards that emotional bid. When you don't, well, you're turning away. I remember Derek, one of our engineer clients, in a meeting with senior leadership, he laughed way too hard at a vice president's lame joke. Everyone could see he was forcing it. Instead of showing alignment, it screamed low value like he was begging for approval. Exactly. High value laughter is cooperative. It brings people in. It says, I'm secure, I want to connect, and I'm here with you.

7:20Whereas low value laughter, whether supplicative, combative, or even competitive, creates distance between each other. Evolutionary psychology tells us laughter actually came before language. Robin Dunbar at Oxford found that laughing together triggers an endorphin release. the same brain chemistry as exercise or music. That chemical reward explains why groups that laugh together bond faster and feel safer. Which is why you can sit through the worst movie and if you're cracking up with friends, it feels like a great night. The laughter bonds you more than the plot ever could. And even in business and negotiation, this matters.

7:59Shared genuine laughter lowers defenses, signals trust, and strengthens cooperation. So here's how you put it into practice. Number one, don't force jokes. Just create space for those playful moments. Number two, match the intensity. If they chuckle, you chuckle. If they belly laugh, let loose. When you catch yourself fake laughing, shift to curiosity. Ask a follow-up question instead of faking it. And lastly, notice when the laughter feels aligned versus off. This is a real-time diagnostic of connection. And this week, if you want to run an experiment in three conversations, notice when laughter shows up.

8:40Write down, did it feel genuine or forced? Did it match intensity? And did you feel closer afterwards? You'll start to see exactly how laughter is shaping your relationships. Remember, laughter isn't about being funny. It's about signaling. I want to connect with you. If you want to know how strong your signals really are, take our Influence Index.
