Ever notice how some people don't have to say much and yet the whole room turns toward them? No clever opener, no big energy, just presence that pulls people in. That's not charisma. That's intrigue. the art of saying less, signaling more, and leaving just enough unsaid so that others want in. In this episode, we're going to show you how to create intrigue with body language that speaks first, openers that earn attention, not demand it, and a curiosity gap that pulls people towards you.

44This is the exact same framework we've taught special forces operators and elite communicators for over two decades, how to capture attention without chasing it.

01Now, most professionals try to get attention by adding more, more words, more gestures, more proof. But psychology actually tells us attention is earned through contrast and curiosity, not volume. A 2017 Princeton study on information gaps found that curiosity peaks when we sense missing information that's just out of reach. Your brain releases dopamine when it anticipates a reward, but it doesn't yet have the answer. That's why cliffhangers in movies work so well. In conversation, intrigue works the exact same way. You reveal just enough to create pursuit. And AJ, I just want to point out the reason that we put in more words, more gestures, more proof is because we're insecure of ourself and our skills.

51That makes us nervous. So we try to fill that gap. Absolutely. Now, before you even open your mouth, people have actually read your frame. Research from Berkeley shows that nonverbal dominance cues like slow movements, calm posture, and minimal fidgeting are read as leadership signals in as little as 400 milliseconds. seconds that's wowed and when we train special operators we tell them stillness signals strength so when you hold a still posture in a noisy environment everyone else sinks to your rhythm it's biological mirror neurons fire to match the calmest nervous system in the room and this is something that we say over and over again which is the stronger frame dissolves the weaker ones And in a social hierarchy, everybody is synchronizing to who they feel is the most confident person in the room.

53Exactly. Presence is just regulation. You can't fake it. You have to start with this. Your shoulders down, comfortably back. Breathe slower than the rest of the room. Notice your breath and smile after eye contact, not before. That one second delay says I'm comfortable here. AJ, something else I want to point out. This goes back to my bartending days. And when I was learning to bartend and being a manager of a rock and roll venue, that social hierarchy sets the tone for the behavior of the rest of the room. So if you get flustered or lose yourself behind the bar, you give the room permission to follow your lead to get out of hand.

43As I mentioned earlier, there's a social hierarchy. And when it comes to something like a bar, people are looking at the staff. How are they behaving? Because that cues them on their behavior. Absolutely. Let's talk about how to actually start the conversation. We call it an earned opener or earned conversation starter. So not, hey, what do you do? We've heard that a million times. That's not a line. It's a read. The opener is a response to data in the room, what you've observed in their world. So in the field, we teach operators to open with observational hooks. Here's some examples. You move like someone who's done this before.

27Imagine hearing that. or you look like the only person here enjoying the music. There's a story behind that pin, right? What you're doing here is you're observing key details about their presence, their body language, what they're wearing. That observational hook draws them in. Each one communicates. I notice details and I see you. And the science is actually really clear. We had Dr. Nicholas Epley on the show recently and he found that targeted personal comments increase your perceived warmth and competence by up to 47 % compared to generic compliments. It's the difference between flattery and precision.

09Cold mornings, holiday plans on the calendar. This is when I want my wardrobe to be simple. Stuff that looks sharp, feels good you actually wear. That's Quint. And the bonus, Quint's pieces make great gifts too. This season's lineup is smart. Mongolian cashmere sweaters for 50 bucks that feel like everyday luxury. cool coats that are stylish and durable. Johnny, I've been reaching for my Quince cable knit sweater constantly on these cooler LA mornings. I have to say the fit and quality are incredible and it's holding up perfectly even with regular wear. It's actually become one of those pieces I just keep grabbing from my closet.

43Quince partners directly with ethical factories and top artisans. They cut out the middlemen to deliver premium quality at half the cost of other high-end brands. So you can give luxury quality pieces without the luxury price tag. Quince is gifting covered beyond clothing too. Home, bath, kitchen travel, all worth checking out. 8:23Johnny, keeping track of all my old financial accounts across multiple apps and an outdated spreadsheet is just such a hassle. 8:58And you'll never need to touch a spreadsheet again. Monarch does the heavy lifting, smart categorization of your spending, clear data visuals, and real control over your money. When you're making good money, it's easy to miss opportunities. Money sitting idle, investments allocated wrong, savings rate lower than you thought. Use code charm at monarch.com in your browser for half off your first year. That's 50 % off your first year at monarch.com with code charm.

34And this is something that high value people understand and read. High value environments or high value rooms of people protect themselves. And when you show key emotional intelligence that is able to target in on people's decisions, like just think about the things that you mentioned before. You're enjoying this music, right? There's a story behind that pin. Those are things that are personal to that other person that you've noticed. It's a compliment. They chose those things. And the best part, you earned the right to keep talking because you started by paying attention. Exactly. You entered their world instead of trying to pull them into your world first.

21That's how intrigue starts. And once you've got their attention, the next move is actually counterintuitive. It's about withholding information. Now, most people overshare to prove their value. They talk about their credentials. They talk about all the things they've accomplished. They try to impress the other person. But high value communicators reveal just enough to invite pursuit by the other person. Get them chasing details about you and you've set the stronger frame. So for example, instead of saying, hey, I'm training for a marathon, say, I'm doing something Saturday that scares me a little.

58Wait, they're gonna bite. It's like conversational judo. You're redirecting curiosity toward you without forcing it. Again, it's earned. and you're not closing the loop. You're leaving it open on purpose. And George Lowenstein's group found that the information gap theory explains this effect. When someone senses a small gap between what they know and what they want to know, they experience a tension that drives their attention until that gap closes. You're creating that tension that sparks intrigue. Now, curiosity is a form of mental discomfort. We have to know what's happening. We got to know what's going on this Saturday that scares you.

43Your job is to create that gap and let them close it. Everyone at home, you're listening to this. You can experience and understand the power of this in your daily life. There are questions that you have about your friends, about your job, that you wander about all day long. That's the curiosity gap working you over. It's that powerful. When you recognize that withholding these key details gets the other person pursuing those details, they're naturally more intrigued by you. They're chasing your value instead of the opposite. That's investment. So all the time that they are spent wandering about you, that's you living rent free in their mind.

34That's an investment that they have. they're going to want a return on that investment. That's what makes you magnetic. You can look at each component of these as their own skill. So number one, your presence and your body language and your breathing, that's enough right there that if you're highly effective and slowing down and choosing things that are of importance to you, people begin to look at you. You now have earned their attention. Who is this person? What do they have going on? And the second piece is being able to make specific observations about other people. The language that they use, the clothes that they're wearing, their presence.

24When you earn their attention, then you can begin to lay out the curiosity gap. The first rule in persuasion and influence is to gather attention first. This is why it works so well. If you're getting ghosted after first dates, if you're talking to tons of people at the networking event but not getting responses, you're not creating enough intrigue to get them to chase you. As we said earlier, so many of us aren't paying attention to our body language. We're not asking the right questions or observing the right details in conversation about the other person to enter their world, which they care deeply about.

05And we're not creating curiosity about ourselves. And if you're not creating curiosity, you're forgotten. So here's the challenge this week. Enter a room slower than everyone else. just a touch slower and match your breath to half of their tempo. Slow down. This is key. Now, the second is use one of those earned openers. Make it about something specific that you observed in them. Maybe it's their vibe. Maybe it's a choice of clothes. Maybe it's the way they entered the room. Maybe it's the way they're grooving to the music. That observation is going to be key to starting the conversation for you this week.

44And then end your sentence before they expect it. Create that curiosity loop. Withhold key details about what you're doing and keep from over-explaining yourself. That small curiosity gap is going to create what you need to drive intrigue. And then you're going to watch how people start leaning toward you, how people start chasing information from you. Because presence isn't about being louder, it's about the signal that you send through all of the noise. If you want to build this magnetic presence, we're training this exact intrigue framework in our X Factor Accelerator this month to walk into any room and have people feel your confidence before you speak.

28It's the same system that we've used to train special forces, intelligence agents, and high stakes communicators for well over two decades. And you'll learn to master your frame, command attention without trying or pursuing it, and and build trust that actually converts that influence into opportunity in your life.
