33When did making plans get this complicated? It's time to streamline with WhatsApp. The secure messaging app that brings the whole group together. Use polls to settle dinner plans. Send event invites and pin messages so no one forgets mom's 60th. And never miss a meme or milestone. All protected with end-to-end encryption. It's time for WhatsApp. Message privately with everyone. Learn more at whatsapp.com. You've been taught to chase more coffees, more DMs, more events. But what if connection worked like gravity? Some people walk into a room and just get invited, introduced and remembered, while others grind twice as hard, still getting overlooked.
15So in today's episode, we're unpacking the science of social gravity, why certain people naturally attract opportunities and how to actually become one of them.
32This is the case of acting smart rather than hard when it comes to your socialization and the relationships that you build. And certainly we get plenty of letters how people feel like they're putting in so much work without the payoff. Well, if that's the case, then this is what you're missing. This is the social gravity. This is the science. behind why it looks so easy and effortless to some people, but yet so hard and difficult for others. And here's the thing. It's not a metaphor. It's rooted in 18th century philosophy and modern network science. In fact, sociologists like Werner Stark and physicists turned sociologists use gravity modules to describe how people flow towards those with mass.
23Now, what mass means is trust, visibility, and social value. The gravity models of social interaction show connection strength is based on two things. Your reputation, warmth, and influence, which we call mass, and the distance, which is your perceived social difference or unfamiliarity. If we can increase our mass and shorten that distance, we can actually become someone who has social gravity, which means the more trust and clarity you project, the more others will feel pulled towards you even before you speak. And just like our universe, the largest objects, some of the largest objects don't have the most mass, right?
03It's about what does that object contain? What do you contain? And that's where we're going to get into. We're going to tell you what creates that mass. Exactly. So what creates pull? Now, we define this as really five things. Number one is proximity. Number two is similarity. Number three is positive affect. Number four is that trust. And number five is instrumentality. So let's dig into the first one, proximity. That is about being seen and heard. Can people actually register you? What does it mean to be seen and heard? And what does seen and heard do for you that causes that mass? Well, number one, it shows that you're taking action, right?
53You're self-motivating yourself to go out there and put yourself in a place of interest. So we're showing self-motivation. You're showing interest, sometimes support, a quest for knowledge, investigating. So taking that action, being seen and heard, it's not just about being there. It's everything that that entails in creating that mass. So to actually create social gravity, you have to show up. You can't create proximity if you don't show up. That's what starts to create the momentum, saying yes to those events and actually showing up. It's so easy to make excuses. It's so easy to find something else in your to-do list, a Slack notification, an email that you should be answering instead of showing up.
44But if you want to create social gravity, you got to have a plan of action that you're following through on and showing up. Now, the second pull psychologically is going to be similarity. We like people who are like us. So are you finding those things that are similar in conversation? Are you pointing out those moments where there is similarity when you're interacting with people? Or are you constantly pointing out the things that you disagree on, the things that aren't similar, the things that stand out as things you wouldn't do, couldn't do, or don't care about. That's going to actually remove that social gravity.
16You can create that gravity by showcasing and highlighting those similarities. And again, proximity and being seen and heard is part of similarity. Because if I'm there and you're there, there's a reason that both of us are there. That showing up expresses that. But here's another piece to this is an order for people to understand that you're like them and you have those similarities. You have to express yourself and that's through your words, your actions and presentation. This is what people notice when they're out and about. And when you're in dialogue with folks and you're fishing for commonalities, that's what you're stuck on.
06That's the trap. But also, here's what we just showed you, that mass is more than just hitting on a couple commonalities. This is the secret sauce. Now, let's talk about the third positive affect. In fact, our guest from Monday's episode, Jay, talked about walking into rooms when he was just a teenager, laughing and chuckling to himself like someone had told him a great joke. That's bringing enthusiasm. That's bringing warmth and that positive affect that people chase. Why do we go out to socialize at all? We go out to have a good time. No one goes out to have an awkward time at an event. No one leaves their house and commits to something to not enjoy themselves.
49So if you want to have social gravity, you got to be bringing that positive affect to any interaction. You got to be bringing that enthusiasm to pull people in. And we are wired for that. It's hardwired in you for that. And a lot of, we've talked on this show of what are the actions and things that you can do in social settings that are going to draw that attention and want, make people want to be a part of your group and want your attention. so creating that positive social momentum again another piece of creating that mass when you're anytime that you're in a social setting you're you're scanning the room for smiles for laughter for movements of that show people enjoying themselves and immediately you start to think when you see those signs, who are those people?
51How can I get closer to them? What's going on over there that's not going on over here? That's the interest that draws people in. Quince dot com slash charm. Now let's talk about the fourth one, trust. The faster you can build trust, the more social gravity you create.
20And one of the easiest ways to do that is through reciprocity. When people are giving, you return the favor. When people are sharing, you add to and share as well. People want to be around people who are giving and adding to an interaction. They don't want to be around people who are social takers, meaning one word answers, not responding to questions, not adding to the interactions that are being had. And we often find a lot of our clients find themselves in group settings, especially drifting to the side, not participating, not acting in a way that's reciprocal and adding to that group dynamic.
58And if you are doing that or you find yourself doing that, you are losing mass. You are losing that social gravity. You want to be able to add to a conversation, whether it's one-on-one or whether it's a group environment. If you find it difficult to trust people or to show and share that reciprocity, it's not due to the people around you. It's due to you. Maybe you've been burnt in the past. Maybe you've been the nice guy who's been taken advantage of. That's fine. That's in the past. You have to learn to open up again. You have to learn to be vulnerable again. You have to learn to trust people again and to do that confidently without the worry of being taken advantage of.
48This comes back to what we've talked about on the show many times. We've even had Adam Grant on the show discussing give and take. And unfortunately, the issue of being a giver is everyone wants to hang out with you. But again, you're not only at the top of everyone's mind, you're at the bottom because if you do not set boundaries, you're easily able to be taken advantage of. That's on you. Create those boundaries. And again, this is something that we do in our implementation sessions. Learn what your boundaries are. Learn what you have to do to adhere to them and confidently express what those boundaries are.
34Now you want to increase your social gravity, you have to be focusing on instrumentality. How are you adding to other people's lives, being useful to their goals? If you're not adding to people's lives, they're not going to want to spend time with you. And we've talked time and time again about the rise of busy work and how everyone feels time starved and everyone's to-do list is growing. The people with social gravity, they have instrumentality. They are adding to people's lives. They are being useful to their goals. It might be sharing knowledge. It might be making a connection. It might be focusing on ways that you can help that other person achieve.
13That is being high value. When we are acting in that cooperative manner and adding value to people's lives, we are increasing our social gravity. How quickly can you as a listener to this think about your friends, what they're working on and how you may help them. Do you know what their goals are? Think of the five people you hang out most. What are they working on right now? What are they working towards? If you don't know that, how quickly can you figure that out? Being nonchalant about it just through normal conversation. Again, that is a skill to be able to have a conversation and identify what those goals are and how you can affect that and be the middleman and give the five-minute favor that makes that happen.
04When you learn how to do that, you become an incredibly high-value person to any social setting that you walk into. Now, here's how we increase that social gravity. We want to be the center of the trust web of multiple networks. You want to be able to give value to your exercise friends, to your entrepreneur friends, to your family, the more that you can become the center of other universes, the larger your social gravity becomes. So if I'm in a group setting and I see that this person is the go to for exercise expert, I'm naturally going to be more interested in bringing that person into my network.
45So we want to use science to create an opportunity for us to have what is called network centrality, that you're not just well-connected, but you're trusted across multiple groups. And we see so many of our clients come to us with really only a focus on one core group, and they're missing that they can amplify their social gravity by creating multiple groups and being the center of those multiple groups around their interests, around their passions, around their hobbies, or even around their career. And it's not just what you know, it's how you interact. The structured influence process framework shows that trust, admiration, and reciprocity are really the currency of opportunity in your life.
26So when you're highlighting that you are the center of multiple groups in your life, you naturally increase your social gravity. And we've seen this play out in our clients. Once they understand the gravity protocol, by week nine, it actually becomes predictable, meaning they stop chasing people. They start getting inbound requests, invites, interest in hanging out, asking for their knowledge, asking for a connection, asking for their time. And someone might even say to you, man, I don't know what it is about you, but I just want to be connected or I just want your information. We got to hang out.
02That's what we call the gravity loop. And when you understand the science that we just shared with you, you can replicate it on demand. And we've seen this from clients moving to a new town, starting in a new career or even coming out of a breakup or divorce where they feel like they have no social gravity and they can create it instantly. AJ, just think about that. We've talked on this show about how hope is not a strategy. I'm going to go to this networking event and I'm going to hope it turns out all right. I'm going to go to this event and hope things go well. When you understand the gravity loop, how it works, and you create mass.
42As you mentioned, there's no hope involved. You're replicating a process that draws people to you. If you're tired of chasing and you're ready to flip the switch, this is your moment. That's right. We've opened up 10 spots for our newest coaching experience, the Gravity Protocol. In just 12 weeks, we're going to install your X Factor and activate your own gravity loop.
