1:03Spies don't win rooms with small talk. They watch for three tiny signals. Who ends the talk? What someone secretly wants? And what they're guarding? Spot those, say one kind line, and make the next tiny step and doors open instantly. See, the problem is most advice is be nice. But nice is forgettable. Reading signals gets you inside. And today, we'll keep it simple with three hidden signals that have real impact. The leader signal, the wish signal, and the fence signal. We're going to break down why recognizing these three signals are your key to networking anywhere and becoming influential in any room.

1:41And for 10 plus years, we've been training military special operators these skills and signals to accomplish high stakes missions in some of the world's most dangerous environments. These signals are your shortcut to networking success when everyone else is focused on dreaded small talk, commonalities and their own interests.

2:09You see, growing your influence is not just about being charming. You're here to move outcomes. If you want to sell more, get promoted, be the people person, listen to, these three signals are your shortcut. The leader signal, who ends the talk? No more pitching to the wrong person. Your ideas reach the real decision maker when you recognize this signal. Or the wish signal, what they quietly want. You stop guessing value. You match what they care about now so that you can move things faster. And the fence signal. What's guarded? You don't triple arms. Now you make it easy to say yes with small, safe next steps.

2:53And there are real-world payoffs here. If you want to sell more, well, you got to find the leader. Find the economic buyer. What's the wish? You have to frame the impact in their own words. Or the fence. Maybe you have to offer a low-risk trial. The result is shorter cycles and cleaner yeses. Let's say you want a promotion. You have to pay attention to the leader signal and map who really steers and then include them early in the decision. Or the wish signal. You want to shape your work to your manager's priority. Or the fence signal. How do we de-risk budget, security, politics before the meeting?

3:33And the result? You look like the person who makes things happen without drama. And if you want to influence the leader, Respect the person that others defer to. That access opens. Wish your questions land because it scratches their itch. Fence people trust you because you protect what they protect. The result, more callbacks, more rooms, and more pool. Or let's say you want to be seen as a leader. We got to map the room, speak to the real need, and then lower their risk. The result is people will actually follow your lead, even if you're not their boss. So the bottom line is we have to read these three signals.

4:19The leader, speak to the wish, respect the fence. You'll move faster, you'll fail less, and of course, you'll get invited back. One of the strongest signals for me, or at least the one that I always look for, is the fence. Because people care about certain things. There's certain aspects of their lives that are off limits to others that they go out of their way to defend. When you understand that and you are the fence, they now have support. They have an ally. That ally gets their ear. If you're still overpaying for wireless, it's time to say yes to saying no. That's Mint Mobile's whole thing.

5:03Their favorite word is no. No contracts, no monthly bills, no overages, no hidden fees, no BS. And that's why I love Mint Mobile Premium Wireless Service for just 15 bucks a month. Ditch those overpriced plans with jaw-dropping bills, surprise overages, and all the hidden fees. Mint starts at just$15 a month. And you're not giving up coverage. Every plan comes with high-speed data and unlimited talk and text on the nation's largest 5G network. You can even use your own phone, keep your number, and bring all your contacts with you. No hassle. Mint Mobile is unbeatable at this pricing. Ready to say yes to saying no?

5:39Make the switch at mintmobile.com slash charm. That's mintmobile.com slash charm. Upfront payment of $45 required, equivalent to$15 per month. Limited time new customer offer for the first three months only. Speeds may slow above 35 gigabytes on an unlimited plan. Taxes and fees extra. See Mint Mobile for details. As the weather finally cools down, I'm swapping in the pieces that actually get the job done. Warm, durable, and built to last. And Quince delivers every time. Quince has all the fall staples you actually want to wear on repeat, like 100 % Mongolian cashmere sweater starting at just$60, classic fit denim, and real leather and wool outerwear that looks sharp and holds up.

6:20I've actually got my eye on their suede trucker jacket. It's perfect for layering, and it hits that balance of casual but still put together. What I like about Quince is they partner directly with ethical factories and top artisans by cutting out the middlemen. You get premium quality at half the cost of similar brands. And it's not just clothing. I love their sheets. They have items like bedding and travel accessories. Quince has really become a go-to for me across the board. Same here. Everything I grabbed from Quince has held up and it doesn't wreck my budget. Layer up this fall with pieces that feel as good as they look.

6:52Go to quince.com slash charm for free shipping on your order and 365 day returns. Now available in Canada too. That's Q-U-I-N-C-E dot com slash charm. Free shipping and 365 day returns. Quince dot com slash charm. Research backs this up. It shows we can see who leads from turn taking and interruption control. And that speaking time plus vocal cues shape who the room actually follows. Curiosity states and follow up questions make people like you more and remember more. So a single how lands better than your pitch. And when people guard something, as Johnny shared, pushing triggers, that psychological resistance, especially around those sacred values, well, that actually breaks rapport.

7:42That's why the leader, wish, and fence signals are so impactful. So let's break them down. The first signal is the leader signal. It's the person that others look at or wait for the close of a decision. Who owns the room? And there are some really simple examples. Let's say it's a team huddle. Well, if everyone glances at one person, like let's say Mia before saying, okay, there's your leader signal. Or maybe it's a Zoom meeting and Ben says, so will, and people immediately stop talking. Clearly, Ben has the leader signal. Or maybe it's a simple coffee meetup to talk a lot, but the threads always end when Peter nods.

8:28As you can see, those signals of leadership are key to your networking. My tiebreaker is who can pause interruptions without raising their voice. That's always a clear one. And if I misread, I use shared steering and they give me the real map. It sounds like a few of you steer and that keeps you on track. The second signal is the wish signal. What do they quietly want more of? That's the topic that gets extra energy. Maybe it's a tiny smile, a repeat, or a quick story, including a proud detail. Let's look at some examples. Let's say your manager says, faster onboarding twice, and then sits forward.

9:10Or maybe the founder jokes about churn, but keeps repeating it. Or maybe the engineer lights up at, well, less rework. These are incredibly important signals. And this is why we talk in many of our episodes about the five levels of listening. Those are incredibly important signals. We're going to hear those words, right? Faster onboarding, jokes about churn or less rework. All of those are tied to emotions and motivations that are tied to their core values. Faster onboarding, this person values their time. Jokes about churn. Again, they don't want to be wasting time. Perhaps they're thinking about other things that they can prioritize.

9:58Engineer talking about less rework. He doesn't want to have to go back and fix things once he's deconstructed them and rebuilt them. And let's think about this. Who's going to stand out networking? Who's going to stand out in their career, the genie who grants people's wishes, who pays attention to these key details that are motivating other people. That's why this signal is so powerful. Now let's talk about the third signal, the fence signal. That's what's guarded. That's the topic that keeps people tense. Think quick justifications. Maybe it's rule drops like policy, security, budget, or even a tighter voice.

10:38So let's look at some examples. The budget. Well, maybe all of a sudden there's tense body language when headcount is mentioned. Or security. A policy gets name dropped as soon as the data sharing comes up. Or reputation. Maybe a leader has to over explain a past decision to protect themselves. And now you know who's leading the charge and what the people in that office need and protect. This information is invaluable. What you do with it is up to you. When you protect the office values or bridge the gap to an individual's concerns, you stand out as a supporter, an ally, and showing willingness to cooperate.

11:22So here's the key. We want to read the leader, speak to the wish, and respect the fence. You're going to move faster, fail less, and actually get invited back in any networking setting. So here's what we want you to do. At your next networking event, spot the leader, listen for the wish, and recognize the fence. So who's the person that people turn to? What is really the key motivator in the conversation of what they're sharing? And what seems to be off limits? Then I want you to recognize the leader. Ask a how question to dig deeper into their wish and always respect the fence, what they're guarding.

12:05Now, the best part is if you make your next ask tiny, something that could be done in under 15 minutes or within 72 hours, you're gonna be more impactful. So think of a tiny ask like, hey, got seven minutes after this, I wanna get your read on something. Or, hey, I host a small round table on Thursdays, do you wanna join? or maybe it's can I shadow you for your stand up next week? I have a couple ideas. AJ, one of my favorites is always to get clarity on what was said. So by pulling the leader aside, getting that five minutes ago, hey, I just want to make sure that I have this right so I can do a better job for you.

12:46So I'm going to tell you what I heard. Let me know if I have this correct or not. And if I have it wrong, please correct me. They love it. Exactly. The correct read is the most important. And when you showcase that you read things right, you stand out from the pack in any context. So think work or that networking event. And these are the three signals that spies are paying close attention to when they're in the field. Now we put together a network like a spy playbook. It's got frameworks, word for word scripts, and 12 more tiny asks that you can use at your next event. Head over to the art of charm dot com slash spy.

13:26That's over 90 pages of the exact same networking skills we've been training military special forces to use in high stakes situations. Skip small talk, read the room and land the room.

13:48Rinse takes your laundry and hand delivers it to your door. expertly cleaned and folded so you could take the time once spent folding and sorting and waiting to finally pursue a whole new version of you like tea time you or this tea time you or even this tea time you said you hear about Dave or even tea time tea time tea time you so update on Dave it's up to you we'll take the laundry rinse it's time to be great next up is a little song from CarMax about selling a car your way.
