Podcast Notes: The Art of Charm - Episode "We Should Hang Out” Usually Goes Nowhere | Social Intelligence Briefing

Episode Summary In this episode, AJ and Johnny from The Art of Charm discuss the common phrase "we should hang out sometime," which often leads to friendships stalling due to ambiguity. They explore the difference between chemistry and momentum in relationships, emphasizing that meaningful connections require structure, continuity, and repeated interactions rather than vague warmth. They provide three actionable strategies to transform casual conversations into genuine friendships.

Key Concepts

  • Ambiguity in Adult Friendships:
  • The phrase "we should hang out" often lacks commitment and can lead to misinterpretations of interest.
  • Many people mistake a good conversation for the foundation of a friendship, when it's really just potential.
  • Chemistry vs. Momentum:
  • Chemistry is the initial spark of connection.
  • Momentum is what sustains and grows a friendship through consistent and structured interactions.
  • The Importance of Structure:
  • Conversations should have a clear direction or plan to avoid vague agreements.
  • Example phrases to solidify plans include:
  • "What kind of hang sounds most fun to you?"
  • "Are you more of a weekday coffee person or a weekend social person?"

Three Moves to Build Real Friendships

  1. Turn Vague Interest into Real Plans:
  2. Avoid leaving conversations in ambiguity. Instead of a general agreement to meet, provide specific options or questions to create a plan.
  1. Effective Follow-Up:
  2. Instead of generic follow-ups, reference specific details from the prior interaction to show genuine interest and continuity. This makes the other person feel remembered and valued.
  3. Example: "Hey, how did that presentation end up going?"
  1. Build Rhythm, Not Just Depth:
  2. Prioritize regular, low-pressure interactions over deep, intense conversations. This could be anything from a quick coffee to a casual text check-in.
  3. Familiarity built through repeated interactions fosters stronger connections over time.

Key Takeaways

  • Adult friendships often fail due to ambiguity rather than outright rejection.
  • "We should hang out" is often a polite placeholder rather than a genuine plan.
  • Continuity and rhythm in interactions are vital for nurturing relationships.
  • Recognizing and responding to social cues can transform casual interactions into meaningful connections.

Conclusion The episode emphasizes that stronger friendships require more than just good conversation; they need actionable follow-through and the establishment of patterns through regular contact. AJ and Johnny advocate for a proactive approach to social interactions to avoid the pitfalls of vague commitments and to foster meaningful connections.

1:14AJ Harbinger:Making friends as an adult is strange because almost nobody tells you no. They just give you a vague yes and then disappear.

1:21Johnny Dzubak:Exactly. No hard rejection, no awkward shutdown, just enough warmth to make you think something might happen, and not enough clarity for anything to actually happen.

1:39AJ Harbinger:We should hang out sometime has become one of the most misleading sentences in adult life. It sounds friendly.

1:46Johnny Dzubak:It sounds open. But most people have no idea how to tell whether it means anything at all.

1:52AJ Harbinger:So today we're breaking down why that line usually goes nowhere, what's actually happening in that moment, and the three moves that help you turn a good interaction into actual momentum for friendship. And I think this is where a lot of people get confused. They assume that if the conversation was good, the connection is already underway. But that's usually not true.

2:13Johnny Dzubak:That's right. A good conversation is not a friendship. It's not even momentum yet. It's just proof that the interaction had some potential.

2:22AJ Harbinger:And that's the part people miss. In adult life, nobody's building friendship off of one electric conversation. It usually grows off repeated contact, follow through, and a few low friction interactions that make the next one even easier.

2:36Johnny Dzubak:That's such a better lens. Not, did we click enough? More like, did anything happen here that makes a second interaction more likely?

2:46AJ Harbinger:Exactly. Because what kills most adult friendships is not some dramatic failure. It's just drift. The ambiguity, vague warmth with no direction.

2:56Johnny Dzubak:And vague language is where people get stuck. We should hang. Let's grab coffee. We should do this again. Most people hear that and think, great, that's a green light. but that sentence by itself doesn't create anything.

3:14AJ Harbinger:A great conversation doesn't build friendship. It creates an opening. Friendship starts when somebody turns that opening into a pattern. Most adult friendships do not die from rejection. They just die from ambiguity. So let's make this practical. The first move you should be thinking about when somebody says we should hang out, don't just nod and leave it floating.

3:38Johnny Dzubak:That's where people lose all the momentum. They treat vague interest like a real plan.

3:45AJ Harbinger:And then they either do nothing or they chase later from an even weaker position. Right.

3:52Johnny Dzubak:Because once the momentum has passed, now they're trying to revive something that never got shape in the first place. So what do you do instead? You give the momentum just enough structure, not pressure, not intensity, but structure.

4:08AJ Harbinger:That's the key. You're not forcing a friendship. You're just helping the other person step out of that vagueness.

4:16Johnny Dzubak:So instead of, yeah, totally, let me know. Try, what kind of hang sounds most fun to you? Yeah, I'd be up for that. Are you more of a weekday coffee person or weekend social person? Or this one, I'm in.

4:33AJ Harbinger:What would be easiest? And now that's so much better because now the moment actually has somewhere to go.

4:40Johnny Dzubak:And their response, this tells you a lot. If they get specific, great. If they stay fuzzy, well, that tells you something too.

4:48AJ Harbinger:And that's an important point. The goal is not to make every single connection happen. The goal is to stop misreading vague warmth as momentum. Don't force the friendship. Just make the next step easier to define. I like keeping my money where I could see it. Unfortunately, traditional big wireless carriers also like keeping my money. 7:55Johnny Dzubak:Friendship momentum comes with continuity. The other person needs to feel like they've actually landed somewhere with you, like you were paying attention.

8:04AJ Harbinger:And that's what makes the second touch feel different. Not admin, continuation.

8:10Johnny Dzubak:So instead of sending some generic message, reference something specific from the interaction. Something like, hey, you were right about that restaurant. I went last night and now I get it. or I'm still laughing about your story from the wedding. You mentioned trying to find a new gym this week. Well, I just passed one that looked right up your alley. Hey, how did that presentation end up going?

8:37AJ Harbinger:And that's strong because it says, I remember you without sounding tryhard. Exactly. You're not manufacturing closeness. You're proving there was actual contact. And that's what makes someone more likely to respond to you because now it feels like an ongoing thread, not a cold restart. And it shows you're actually paying attention and recognizing their emotional bids, which is what we actually practice inside of our X Factor Accelerator. When you start to recognize these moments of emotional connection and then tie them back in your follow-up communication, you are laying the groundwork for real friendship.

9:13AJ Harbinger:So don't just reopen the conversation, continue it.

9:17Johnny Dzubak:AJ, this goes to something that people need to understand about our modern world. They get stimulation all day. You can listen to amazing music. You can see a movie that blows your mind. You can find the great comedy. Whatever you want, it's at your fingertips. So when you remember these seemingly trivial moments from your first contact or contact with a friend, well, that showcases that those moments stuck out, that there was emotion tied to them, that those moments hit you. That makes the other person feel seen and heard.

9:55AJ Harbinger:And that's also stimulating. In fact, that's more stimulating than watching another reel or farting around on Slack. When you feel heard and validated and someone's actually thinking about you, that stands out. Now, the third move is big, especially for people who want closeness fast. Stop trying to make friendship deep before it becomes regular.

10:18Johnny Dzubak:That's a great way to say it. A lot of people think friendships get built through one big meaningful hang, one deep dinner, one vulnerable conversation. Sure, sometimes that's true, but more often adult friendships grow through rhythm.

10:34AJ Harbinger:Exactly, repeated low pressure contact builds that rhythm.

10:39Johnny Dzubak:Exactly, a short coffee, a workout, an invite to something casual, a quick check-in, a relevant recommendation, a group plan. These don't feel dramatic, but they create familiarity. And familiarity matters more than people think. A lot more. People overvalue intensity and undervalue repeat contact. They think we had such a deep connection. Why didn't this become a friendship? Because depth without rhythm usually doesn't stick.

11:13AJ Harbinger:And that's a useful distinction. You don't need to be an instant best friend. You need three easy interactions that make the fourth one feel even more natural.

11:24Johnny Dzubak:And that's the real goal. Make seeing you again feel normal, not like some big emotional event.

11:31AJ Harbinger:So instead of saying, how do I make this more meaningful? Ask, how do I make this just easier to repeat? Adult friendship usually grows through rhythm. not intensity. We should hang out usually goes nowhere, not because the conversation was fake, but because nobody turned a good moment into actual momentum. And if you want more real friendships as an adult, don't leave the moment vague. Create continuity instead of the generic follow-up and build rhythm before you chase depth. That's how good conversations stop dying on the vine. And this is bigger than friendship. This shows up in dating. This shows up in work.

12:11AJ Harbinger:This even shows up in your networking. Anytime there's soft language and unclear intent, people get stuck.

12:18Johnny Dzubak:A lot of people think they're getting rejected.

12:21AJ Harbinger:A lot of the time they're just sitting in ambiguity. And ambiguity is where momentum goes to die. And this is exactly why we built the access test, because most people are failing these social tests they do not even realize are happening. We should hang out sometime. We should stay in touch. Send me something. Tell me about yourself. Most people hear these as just casual phrases. What they often really are is actually a quiet test. Can you read the moment accurately? Can you tell the difference between politeness and real interest? Can you respond with enough specificity to move things forward?

12:59Johnny Dzubak:That's what the access test teaches. It breaks down all 13 hidden tests that show up in social and professional conversations and gives you the response protocols so you stop guessing and start seeing what's actually being evaluated.

13:14AJ Harbinger:If you want to learn more, go to theartofcharm.com slash test. It's the 13 hidden tests that determine whether you're in or out with clear response frameworks and you could use it in your very next conversation because the problem is usually not that you blew the interaction. It's that you just didn't realize the real test started when the conversation was ending.
