In short

The episode argues that “being liked” (seeking approval through humility, silence, and avoiding conflict) can trap analytical people in invisibility, while “respect” comes from visible competence and voluntarily weighted expertise. It frames this as a currency mismatch: approval pays out in warmth/likability, but respect pays out in influence/prestige.

Guest backgrounds

No named guests appear; the hosts discuss research and examples, including references to Susan Fiske, Amy Cuddy, Peter Glick, Joey Chang, and Jessica Tracy.

Key claims

Warmth and competence are separate; dominance relies on intimidation, while prestige relies on recognized expertise. Cognitive fusion makes self-promotion feel like identity change.

Notable examples

A worker whose boss takes her credit stays invisible until she claims outcomes and sets boundaries; elite special operators learn respect-based leadership because approval can be fatal.

1:17Johnny:You catch the thing nobody else caught. Then you're in the meeting and your boss presents it. Your name doesn't come up at all and you say nothing. And you tell yourself, well, that's fine. My work speaks for itself. Does it? Never. And that's the lie that people tell themselves because you're humble, you're helpful, and you didn't want to make it about you. You do everything right and you walked out of the room more invisible than when you walked in. Because you were being liked instead of being respected. Right. Right. Those are different currencies. You're spending approval in a system that only pays out in respect.

1:56And the harder you work, the deeper the hole gets.

2:09Johnny:Today, we're breaking down why that happens, why it feels like integrity when it's actually a trap, and what the people who got out of it do differently. So how does this show up, Johnny? Well, let's just look at the analytical mind, okay? You're good at execution. You see what others miss. But look at what it doesn't do. You won't formalize rapport because it feels manipulative. You won't have an agenda because it feels political. You won't speak to emotion because it feels like manipulation. And you won't read power dynamics because it feels too political. won't engage in conflict, won't push back under pressure, won't act first, won't claim outcomes, and won't delegate or direct or set boundaries.

2:57Johnny:That's a lot of won'ts. Right, that's a lot of won'ts. And every single one of them trace back to one single thing. They're spending approval currency in a system that only pays respect. And here's what's interesting. This actually maps to research almost perfectly. Susan Fisk, Amy Cuddy, and Peter Glick and team found that when people evaluate other people, two dimensions show up again and again. Warmth and competence. Right. Do I like you? And do I believe you can deliver? Exactly. And those two judgments can actually be separate. You can be seen as warm without being seen as highly competent.

3:40Johnny:or you could be seen as highly competent without being seen as especially warm. So being liked doesn't automatically cash out as being respected. Exactly. They're different accounts and there's no automatic exchange rate here. And that's the pattern. Analytical people, they think they're being virtuous. They're actually locked. And here's what gets them. If you recognize yourself doing these things, staying silent, waiting to be asked, saying yes to everything, you're not being good. You're being used. And you think you're staying true to yourself, but you're actually locked in by yourself. And respect doesn't mean dominance.

4:25Johnny:That's right. Joey Chang, Jessica Tracy, and team actually tested two different routes to influence, dominance and prestige. Nice. What's the difference? Now, dominance gets influenced through intimidation and pressure. Prestige gets influenced because other people recognize your expertise and voluntarily give your judgment weight. Ah, that's respect currency. Exactly, not be more aggressive. Make your value visible enough that other people willingly orient toward it. All right, real talk. What are you paying for wireless right now? Whatever it is, I guarantee you're overpaying. That's the game these big carriers play.

All of their plans right now are$15 a month, even unlimited. $15 high-speed data, unlimited talk and text on the T-Mobile 5G network. And you don't even have to give up your phone or number. 7:23Johnny:So what's the damage? Well, the damage is accumulation. Weeks, months, sometimes years solving the wrong problem because the actual problem, the currency mismatch, was never named. The better you get at approval moves, the more trapped you become. Right. You work harder, stay more humble, become more helpful, and the system locks you in tighter because now you're more valuable doing exactly what you've always done. Effort deepens the trap. Right, and here's what most people don't see. Every day you spend in approval currency, you're one day further from becoming the person you could have been.

8:04Not because you're not good enough, but because you're locked in by your own hands.

8:09Johnny:And there's another piece of psychology that explains why you keep doing it. What is it? Researchers call it cognitive fusion. The thought stops feeling like a thought, and it starts feeling like a fact about who you are. Example, I don't like self-promotion turns into, well, I'm not the kind of person who self-promotes. Or I've always been humble becomes I can't claim outcomes because that's not who I am. And now changing the behavior feels like changing who you are. That's why the approval move can feel like integrity instead of strategy. That's right. And elite special operators, they've learned this.

8:47This is why we've spent 12 years training federal agents, Navy SEALs, Green Berets, the same sort of analytical minds and the same approval instincts. But what's different in their world? Well, in their world, approval gets you killed. You lead through respect or you fail. So they learn fast. And the ones who can't see the currency mismatch don't make it. So this isn't theoretical. It's not theoretical. It's survival. And the same principle applies in your boardroom. your client meetings, your career. You either are spending approval or earning respect. Your system only pays out in one of them.

9:26Johnny:Okay, so how do we fix this? Well, first, you have to see it. The blind spot is real. It's not a character flaw. It's a currency mismatch. But people worry that if I change this, I'm becoming somebody else. Are they? Well, no, this isn't about becoming somebody else. It's about learning a different currency without losing your integrity. You can still be humble and visible. You can be authentic and strategic. And right now, they fuse them together so they're opposites. Well, what does this actually look like? Well, I had this analyst come through, a brilliant worker, but she never claimed her wins.

10:06Her boss took her credit and she got angrier, worked harder, did better work, but got locked in deeper, more valuable exactly where she was. Okay, so what changed? She learned respect currency. So the next project, she said to her boss, here's what I built, here's the impact, and here's what I want next. And this is the same person, same integrity, but those questions are a different currency. And? Six months later, she's promoted because suddenly she wasn't invisible anymore.

10:44Johnny:Aha, that's the shift. Right, approval keeps you stuck, safe, and invisible. You're doing the work, but nobody sees it. Respect opens doors. People need you in the room. You go from invisible to indispensable. Because when you understand how the system actually works, you navigate it differently. Suddenly doors open. Suddenly people seek you out. You're finally seen. And this is where Theos comes in. Right. Theos is eight weeks. Week by week, you practice. Week one, you frame a decision. Week two, you claim the outcome. Week three, you set a boundary. And each week, the system responds differently than you expected.

11:30Because the old story, this means I'm abandoning who I am, dies because the evidence that you get contradicts it. And because the move works. Absolutely. So when you spend respect currency instead of approval, the system itself responds differently. People respond differently. And the old story can't explain it anymore. So it dies and a new story about yourself emerges. And the best part is you can't unsee it. And not because you're learning techniques, but because you're seeing how the system actually works. Once you see it, you navigate it differently forever. So who is this for? Well, founders, consultants, analysts, engineers, it doesn't matter.

12:18If you just heard yourself in this pattern, that's not the signal. not sounds interesting, but actual recognition. That's who we take into Theos. Okay.

12:31Johnny:So what happens? Well, you need to learn this now before years of approval spending cost you your career. And it's not about becoming somebody else. It's about becoming the version of yourself that belongs in the rooms you care about. Apply today. The link is in the show notes. We'll teach you the rest.

Doing great work doesn’t guarantee you’ll get credit for it. In fact, staying humble and helpful can sometimes make your best work invisible.

AJ and Johnny break down the difference between approval and respect—and why high-performing analytical professionals often get trapped chasing the wrong one. They explore how avoiding conflict, waiting to be asked, saying yes to everything, and refusing to claim your wins can feel like integrity while quietly limiting your influence and career growth.

You’ll learn why being liked and being respected are separate judgments, how to make your expertise visible without becoming aggressive or inauthentic, and why claiming your outcomes doesn’t mean abandoning humility. The shift is simple: stop assuming your work will speak for itself and start communicating the value, impact, and direction of what you contribute.
