In short

The Buckleys chat about a chaotic night out that nearly turned into a fight, then pivot to nostalgia and the 90s fashion/music revival, plus the comeback of physical media and TV/film. They also debate “Buckley’s Law” listener proposals about restaurant menu behavior and out-of-10 decimal ratings.

Guests

No guests appear. Hosts are James Buckley and Claire Buckley (they reference their kids Harrison and Jude, and friends Jess and Cam).

Key claims

People can’t “leave the house” for a quick pint; the 90s feel like a “safe house” even for younger adults; digital ownership is being eroded (games can be pulled); physical formats (vinyl/CD/DVD) help preserve culture; decimal out-of-10 ratings are unnecessary.

Notable examples

A woman at a busy bar tries to make James buy her wine after others hype that he’s “here”; Harrison’s Johnny Knoxville/Jacass-inspired style; “Trevor” as a McDonald’s nickname; Vice-licensed therapist Hayley Perez on 90s psychology; PlayStation moving toward digital-only; listener laws: ban “menu archaeologists” and decimal ratings.

Getting there. oh dear we're carry on so where's that come from then because there's still no beer on the set well I had some chicken satay sticks oh yeah you did as well you broke your own rule today opened them in a taxi yeah they fucking stunk well they didn't stink they did but also I was really shaky yeah you didn't eat much yesterday did you no didn't have a chance to eat yesterday you're busy you're still doing this Netflix thing at the moment yeah Yeah, nearly finished that. Nearly finished.

2:57You're going to miss Keegs?

2:59Clair Buckley:Yeah. You love her, don't you? She's all right, Keegan. She's all right in my book. She's one of the good ones. Does she know she's got James Buckley's stamp of approval? Yeah, because I talk to her and stuff. People know if they don't have my stamp of approval. Right, they don't exist. Just sit in a room, silent. You've got my stamp of approval. I wish I didn't sometimes. Why? Because if it means you don't talk to me for a while. You get all, you get most of. I know, I know. I asked you the famous question today, didn't I, on the train? Oh, I've got my headphones. Yeah, I was like, do you not have your headphones with you?

3:38Clair Buckley:I said yes. You're chatting away. Yeah. You're my sort of, I practice all my conversations with you first before I take them out into the world. Correct. Well, you're welcome. This is the best you're going to get. Oh, right. What have we been up to? What's been going on? what's been going on it's been very you've been busy yeah I've been boring because I'm still recovering recovering from a from a little illness I'm still all I'm still all weak and Voldemort-y sometimes but we did get we did get out during the week we snuck out for a quick pint oh yeah with Jess and Cam that's right yeah it's the first time I've been out in like a month and I was saying my famous words you just can't leave the house can you oh my god I forgot about this you can't leave the house don't leave the house oh I nearly got into a fight and I wasn't even drinking I was on the Diet Coke yeah and she's fucking lucky I was I'll let you tell it I'll let you tell it because I don't even know it's a bizarre story I had to come in halfway to save you I'll just say I'll just say what happened yeah and it happened to me and it's still I still don't really understand what happened And I was at the bar, I was getting a couple of pints in.

4:56Yeah. And then a woman pokes me on the back.

5:01Clair Buckley:And I was like, oh. And it was quite busy. Yeah, it was really busy. It was quite busy that day. I was like, oh, hello. And she went, now, in her defence, she, I'm sure, the very next day, she felt, she was woke up in the morning and was like, oh, no. Fucking hope so. Oh, you'd like to think so, wouldn't you? You'd like to think. So nothing against her, nothing against women. She poked me on the back and she went, oh, you're here. I went, what? I went, yeah. She went, yeah, oh, that's all really exciting, you're here. And I went, oh, okay. She went, yeah, the thing is, it's my leaving drinks today.

5:44Clair Buckley:It's my work's leaving drinks and everyone's all excited because you're here. And I went, oh, right. I was like, oh, sorry. Well, sorry about that. I'm not sure what I can do. She went, well, the thing is, like, I had a glass of wine and everyone started going, oh, he's here, he's here. And then I looked and then I turned around. Now my wine's gone. So I think you should buy me a glass of wine. And I went, what? I went, hang on a second. Explain to me again. I was like you think and everyone there was a big crowd there was a crowd that just was watching this going oh no there was two by the time I came up there was two young boys behind you they must have been early twenties and they were literally you'd your back to them they were literally standing like this it was a bit of a train wreck and I went oh I went hang on a minute just explain like why do I owe you why is it my fault that I owe you a drink She explained it again.

6:48Clair Buckley:I went, oh, it's fine. It's fine. Don't worry. I was like, I think she wants a white wine or something. Like to the bar staff. To the bar staff. Because it's just easier. It's just easier. I know that, you know, I didn't need to buy her a wine. The bar staff went, no, you shouldn't have to buy that. I think they gave her a free white wine. I think they gave her a free drink. They did. They went, we're not charging you for that. She's bang out of order. But then you piped up. You came in, didn't you? I was just like, what's your problem? Yeah, you came straight in with what's your problem? Straight in.

7:26Clair Buckley:What's your problem? Because I could tell she had a problem and I'm not going to let... She did. It was like, I fucking just wanted a quick pint. And it literally was just supposed to be a quick pint. But anyway. And I was just like, you can't leave the house, can you? No. You cannot, like, a quick pint. I was in the pub for like half an hour. Yeah. It was good. I liked it. It's been a while since I've had a bit of ag. A bit of frontation. I was up for it. Yeah, that was annoying. To be fair though, the bar staff, I will say, in case they're listening, because we did tell them we were going to talk about this on our podcast.

8:06Yeah, yeah. And they were very lovely. Well, that is what I said. They came up and they were like, oh, we're really sorry about that. That was weird.

8:12Clair Buckley:And I went, don't worry, podcast. It's podcast material. It's great. In slightly lighter news, I think me and the boys have, and I'm sure this is already a thing, like, you know, I've got mates that genuinely talk in Cockney rhyme slang. Yes. Not in a funny way. No. Not all the time, but they drop them every so often. They're not being ironic. No. It's just part of the way they talk. Yeah. So I feel like I'm pretty well versed in the Cockney rhyming slang. and I think me and the boys have inadvertently come up with a new one really? it was I think it was last Friday and the boys were texting me saying they wanted something to eat and I was like right from their bedroom?

9:01yeah I hear it when they do that

9:03Clair Buckley:and I was like I'm like get your ass down here and talk to me like a person do you know what's even worse? I prefer it I'm like yeah makes sense you don't have to come all the way downstairs just to we can do it here I don't have to get up or anything. They're like, oh, can we order something? I was like, all right, what do you want? And Harrison just wrote McDonald. And I wrote back saying, Trevor, question mark. And I had to show you because I was like. I remember this, yeah. Because I was like, you're the only one that's going to get this and you're not in the boys' chat group. No, because then I was like, why did you say that?

9:38They're not going to know who Trevor McDonald is.

9:42Clair Buckley:Now, when it's like, oh, can we get a McDonald's? It's like, oh, I fancy a Trevor. Okay, yeah, great. I fancy a Trevor McDonald. So it doesn't always have to rhyme then? Oh, well, yeah, it's just the same word pretty much. It's just the same word. Yeah. Yeah. But are there other ones like that? Yeah, I'm sure. I'm sure. Right, okay. I think that's a good one. And I didn't do any research into it, but it's so perfect. It must already be. There must already be people saying that. I mean, I've never heard it. No, me neither. well our listeners will start saying it now my favourite to this day is playing a bit of Mark Mark Varduka Snooker yeah I love that one I remember when my mate was skint once he said he was Brassic Park but Brassic is the one yeah but he's just switched it for Jurassic so there's no rules in this they can evolve right okay they can evolve it's great love language I love words good they're so interesting aren't they good you weren't saying that when we were talking about Shakespeare a little while ago you were slagging words off do you know what Shakespeare's really entered my consciousness really I'm thinking about Shakespeare a lot these days why about how much I hate Shakespeare you can't hate Shakespeare I don't know man there's something about that guy don't trust him can I impress you Claire can you yes can you right we've been together for a long time it's been a while we've been together for a long time stop buying drunk women fucking wines at bars that'll impress me I only do it if they bully me into it though we've been together for a while now how long?

11:23Clair Buckley:16 years I think 16? yeah so come on that's enough it's not very often anymore that you learn something about me and you go oh okay I'm about to blow your socks off or knock your socks off and blow your mind not wearing socks but go on well blow your flip flops off My eBay account is 21 years old.

11:48Let that sink in for you for a second there.

11:51Clair Buckley:Your husband has had a steady eBay account for 21 years that is still active and I still use. When was the last time you used it? I was looking at eBay recently, actually, because I wanted to buy a mug that looked like it had coffee in it that was spilled over. And I thought, oh, that'll wind Claire up. Well expensive. They wanted about 44 quid off me. So you were actively trying to find something. Yeah, you could only get them from America. Just a little joke shop mug that looks like it's been spilled. I was like, oh, that'd be hilarious. I stuck that on the table. How we'll laugh, I thought.

12:32Clair Buckley:And then I thought, yeah, for 15 quid, I'd probably do that. 15? Yeah, I'd go as high as 15 for a joke. Seven at the most. but 44 oh so those things don't work you can see that it's plastic I saw a picture of it I was going to say it looks real in the picture no no it was and it was said it was like it was description was hyper realistic because I wasn't going to just get a shit thing I wasn't just going to get some nonsense I wanted to get something that would really make you angry make you furious I would say 80 % of the stuff you purchase makes me angry that's what I get it maybe you bought lifts for your shoes yeah you ever worn them no i've never worn them maybe you bought um a fake nipple with a piercing through it yeah i did yeah i did have we not spoken about that on the podcast no it's just sorry it's still in the kitchen drawer yeah it's honestly it's really funny and i thought oh but because i think because obviously it's like a sticker thing that you put on your nipple it's like a silicone nipple and then you put your shirt on over the top of it and it looks like your nipples pierced and I thought oh that would be hilarious if I went out with Claire but you buy these things you never actually do it I never follow through with it don't I never well I got your reaction I already got your reaction I was like that's good the big hat you just bought a big hat bought a great big massive cap cap baseball cap and when I say I mean it's like this size it's like Pharrell Williams would wear it that was about 75 quid yeah it was so it's got the Chieftains on it it's got the Chieftains logo on it so I'm going to wear it to the Chieftains games no you're not yeah you know you're not I'm wearing it to the first game of the season okay great right I'm going to this is what I'll I'm going to start a new feature of my own every time you buy something I'm going to I'm going to try and remember to note it done no but not bang for a buck because everybody knows it's not it's just James he's annoying but I would say that big hat was bang for buck how there's only one of them mate £75 yeah no one else has got one for something that's taking up so much space in the utility room right now that is one of a kind and when I wear it to the Chieftain's first game that's going to bring a lot of joy you know you're not gonna I am gonna of course I am that's why I bought it you're mortifying absolutely mortifying that's why I got it right I'm going to I'm going to start taking notes because if you think it's too weird and too stupid James has definitely bought it yeah 100 % and mostly just to annoy me yeah should we get into the podcast yeah why are you stating anything like that I don't know this episode is brought to you by GoHenry we think it's important our kids know their stuff when it comes to money don't we we certainly do and like when they're asking for a new hockey stick or a new video game we make sure to let them know that money does not grow on trees.

15:36Clair Buckley:It doesn't. Not at the moment, anyway. I think money growing trees is just around the corner, mate. All right, come on. It's going to be great. Move on. Now, the kids grow up so fast these days, there's no time like the present when it comes to teaching your kids important money skills. You can start right now with GoHenry. What is GoHenry, I hear you ask, Claire? Well, it's a smart app and a debit card for kids aged 6 to 18, giving the tools they need to learn about money and investing for today's world. Nice. And with a Go Henry Junior Stocks and Shares, Issa, we can pop some money away for our kids.

16:11Clair Buckley:The money has a chance to grow in the background and then they can get access to the money at 18. Lovely. So they can put money towards, I don't know, university? Maybe. Or maybe their first lad's holiday. Either way, they'll be clued up enough to know what to do next. Go Henry, where kids go to learn and grow money. Visit gohenry.com to find out more. Hey, Claire. Yeah. I don't suppose you've got some T's and C's for me, have you? Absolutely, I do. Capital at risk, junior ISA rules and terms and conditions apply. 16:51The Go Henry card is issued by IDT Financial Services Limited, a principal member of Visa Europe.

16:57Clair Buckley:Smashed it.

17:16Clair Buckley:Now Claire The last few weeks have made me feel very nostalgic Thinking about school And of course The 90s Yeah Gong? You gonna gong me? Oh pathetic um according to a poll from you go the majority of both gen z's and millennials say the 90s were more fashionable than any other decade absolutely not I don't know no I'm not saying that I'm hating on 90s fashion it's nice seeing it coming back around over the last couple of years I think but when you think of 60s and 70s fashion and stuff yeah even 50s the teddy boys and stuff where i just see i think right now is because i think right now people aren't afraid to dress like any of those eras yeah you see people with like flares on and looking quite 70s the 90s are coming back you spot the odd one or two glasses the big glasses i feel like everybody's a bit more individual i think modern fashion for kids for like 19 20 21 22 year olds i think it's awful do you think i don't think right now i think maybe back in sort of the 2010s was awful oh it was terrible yeah it was really terrible but i think now it's all right no pre-2010s 2006 2005, 2006, 2007 that was when we were at that age yeah fashion was terrible blokes did this thing where it was like half business but with jeans so you'd wear like shiny shoes, blue jeans and a dress shirt untucked maybe a waistcoat maybe a tie I do not Terrible.

19:15I can get on board with jeans and shoes.

19:19Clair Buckley:Jeans and shoes? What's wrong with that? Like jeans and like brown dress shoes. Right. I can't do it. Don't like it. You see kids like... Well, look at Harrison right now. Yeah. So Harrison's going through... Now, he does love his fashion and stuff, right? He's 14 and his style icon right now is Johnny Knoxville. Yeah. From like early Jackass. So he's doing kind of like baggy jeans, belts and like little Mickey Mouse t-shirts and cardigans and stuff. Like he's going back. I've encouraged him though as well. Yeah, I know. Because I was watching Jackass with him and he absolutely loves it. I know, he does.

20:01Clair Buckley:It's so funny. I mean, that is genuinely a special moment for me watching Jackass. Yeah, with the boys. Yeah. But he was going, Johnny Knoxville is cool. Like Johnny Knoxville dresses quite cool. Yeah. I went, yeah, fucking 2001. He was a style icon. Don't worry about that. Yeah. Like, he had a moment. And, yeah, he's sort of getting into that sort of cut off dickies and things. Didn't he ask for in what? Convoice. Converse. Dickies in convoice. He was wearing convoice. Like fucking Ray Winston from The Departed. didn't he ask you to buy him a fucking gold belt? He wanted a cowboy belt buckle thing, yeah.

20:49I was going, come on. I was like, listen, I'm all for you expressing yourself. I was like, but let's not get battered. No.

20:56Clair Buckley:But you see kids, like, there's been a couple of times when I've driven out of London late at night and you see kids lining up to get into nightclubs and things. Or light clubs. They look like they're about to go to the gym or something. Very cash. like going for a night out. Right. Okay. And I don't like that. Even though the, I will admit the fashion was a bit nonsense when I was late teens, early twenties. But it was, you did make an effort. You did wear shoes. What, did they have trainers on? Oh, wearing fucking Air Force Ones or whatever. Right. And it's just like, come on. You used to know what you'd get in.

21:37No. With trainers.

21:38Clair Buckley:No shoes. No trainers. Yeah, no trainers. Yeah. Yeah. If your name's not down, you're not coming in. Yeah. There's also a big resurgence of vinyls and CDs. Yeah, which I love. I think that's great. I think so, yeah. Wait, CDs? Yeah. Who's buying CDs? Kids are buying CDs. To play on what? CD players. Who's got them? I assume they're also buying CD players. I've never seen a CD player for sale anywhere. That's why you haven't got a 21-year-old eBay account, Claire. You got it. There you go. I think that's great. I think there is a movement at the moment about buying physical products. Yes, absolutely.

22:22Clair Buckley:With entertainment. Yeah. You won't know this, Claire, but there's a real big thing that's just happened recently with PlayStation saying that they're going forward in the next couple of years. There's just, then everything's going to be bought digitally. You're never going to own that game. which then means and it's happening already that people buy games and then you need to be either be connected to the internet to play that game or and the people that make that game and no longer support it so it's not like you know i've got like a mega driving thing yeah and although all the snares and stuff in my in my office there and i can just call it an office and i can just put the game in you know a game that was made in 1992 or whatever still works I can still play it they're they're now being able to just close those down which I think is not only dangerous just because it's unfair if you buy something you should be able to use it for life you should be able to do whatever you want with it and use it for life but also they're a part of history they're it's about sort of you know I love retro gaming I love playing my old video game consoles and my kids love it as well.

23:34Clair Buckley:And it's about sort of preserving this sort of culture almost. And the kids' games, my boys, the games that they're playing now, that they really enjoy and they're excited about, they won't be playing with their kids. Because it'll be lost. Because it'll be lost. It'll just be erased from history. And I think that's, even though like paying 75 quid for a video game these days or whatever and then being told a little bit down the line, oh, that's it, that's that done, is a kick in the bollocks. I genuinely think there's a bigger thing going on. Do you mean that they can also then take the game away?

24:15Clair Buckley:Yeah, they can just pull it away. They can just stop it. Wow, no, that's crazy. If they wanted to. Yeah. But what about, I mean, but well, the same with movies though. That's also what Christopher Nolan's getting at now. He's encouraging people to buy Blu-ray DVDs and stuff like that. Buy yourself a DVD player. Get biophysical. And to be fair on me, I've pretty much got any film that you want on DVD, I've pretty much got that. On DVD? Yeah. Not really. You've seen my DVD collection. Yeah, but they're all new. That's what I'm saying. Yeah, anything new that's coming out, it really gives a fuck.

24:51Clair Buckley:I'm saying if there's a film, there's a classic film that you want, I've got it. Yeah, I suppose. But we don't have a DVD player. I can get one. get one of Feebo yeah piece of piss see I don't mind as much we obviously I don't play video games but I think for me it's music yeah I think I want like that album that you want I think you should have that physically when I think because I don't really think about passing my DVDs on to my kids but I definitely think about passing or vinyl on yeah when we're pan breed you know I agree I think that's cool listen I've got no problem with 18 to 24 year olds buying CDs no me neither I just didn't know people were buying CDs apparently there's some science behind the revival of the 90s in an article for Vice magazine licensed therapist Hayley Perez I sort of don't trust that why did she have to stipulate that she's licensed yeah why didn't she just say therapist yeah I know I feel like I'm licensed by the way um life now feels complicated and challenging we have access to so much information and we're over connected through social media and the news that overload explains why even younger adults who barely lived through the 90s still feel attached to it people long for a simpler time at this point the 90s are doing double duty as both a time period and a psychological safe house.

26:30Clair Buckley:Wow. Good job there, Hayley Perez. Licensed therapist, Hayley Perez. What's the skinny? I've got kids here buying CDs. Right, okay. Do you reckon when they take the license off her that she has to hand in a badge and gun? She has to hand in her bed and notebook. I don't care how licensed you are, Hayley Perez. there's a rule book and you've got to play by it fuck the rules long live the 90s I love the 90s we know do you not like it? you keep talking as if we lived through the 90s I did I was there yeah but we were infants what are you talking about? we were both born in the 80s Claire like I feel like I grew up in the 2000s That's when I was like a bit older.

27:25I was buying stuff. I was doing stuff.

27:27Clair Buckley:Do you reckon? Yeah. I was a kid in the 90s though. Well, yeah, we were. And I grew up in the 2000s. But we were little kids. Like I don't really remember a lot of stuff. Yeah, we straddled. We straddled. But I think you have to, don't you? You only have like one decade as a kid and then the next decade you grow up. That's everyone. Teens, I guess, I suppose. But what I'm saying is I just don't remember. Like you talk as if you were like 18 in the 90s. Like about clothes and music and food and stuff. And I'm like, well, I don't really remember it. I just remember what I remember. Yeah, fine. And I don't talk like I was 18.

28:03Clair Buckley:I was heavy into pogs though. And a bad pog problem. Yeah, I think, yeah. I had one of those Chubba Chups cases for my pogs. Right, yeah. I had a big, thick slammer, metal slammer I had. Yeah, gold. Yeah. Yeah. Or bronze. No, it was gold. And I think I saw it not recently. When I say recently, I mean maybe 15 years ago. That's what I'm talking about. This is how you talk. James always say to me, oh, the other day. And then he tells me a story like about four years ago. And I'm like, that's not the other day. Yeah, the other day when I went to see the Beatles play at the cabin. um hey claire we have a voice note we have a voice note i believe it's from someone called tim is that right let's hear what tim's got to say timmy hi james and claire my name is tim i'm just messaging in because i was born in 1998 so i like to tell people i actually class as a 90s kid even know you know i basically grew up in the 2000s but this is my issue is that i'm classed as a gen z kid and that's from 1996 i think or 1997 to 2012 that's a big gap and i feel a lot happened in that gap you know you had everybody suddenly had the internet netflix streaming spotify you know vhs tapes aren't a thing anymore but they were when i was a kid i feel like people born in 1998 still got loads of cool 90s stuff but we're lumped in with these new kids and i don't like it so can we move the brackets a little bit so that people born in the 90s who maybe grew up in the 2000s still get a little bit more respect than kids nowadays i don't want to be a gen z i want to be a millennial i grew up listening to blink 182 watching um friends scrubs malcolm in the middle all that stuff i'm not a gen z-er definitely not yeah apart from friends that was all sort of that was all sort of 2000s stuff that you mentioned that he was growing up with I will say this Tim don't worry about it be proud of being a Gen Z be proud of all that stuff that you that you listed then I would say that's more 2000s stuff but 2000s was cool as well so don't be ashamed of that because if you if you are saying you're a 90s kid that means I'm an 80s kid and I'm not prepared to do that you've went too far you've went too far because I was born in 87 but I never say I'm an 80s kid I say I'm a 90s kid well yeah because you were 3 exactly when the 90s hit yeah exactly so this guy was 2 when the 2000s hit well he was born in 98 he was about a year and a half yeah he had about a year and a half's worth of 90s yeah sorry Tim but also don't worry about it no you're not as cool as us sorry no No, not at all, no.

31:12Clair Buckley:They're all cool. It's all cool to look back on. But listen, you're a 2000s kid. You know, think of all the great stuff in the 2000s. The Libertines, the Strokes. Love the Libertines. Great music. The Arctic Monkeys. Yeah. The Inbetweeners. Oh. Don't get much fucking cooler than that, does it? No, it doesn't, no. So. Yeah, you're fine. You're fine. You're an early Gen Z, which is fine. I saw a thing on Instagram. It was a bloke, you know, late 30s, early 40s, my age, and he's putting his vans on. Yeah. And this little boy comes into the room and he goes, why do you always wear dad shoes? And he goes, no, I'm not wearing dad shoes.

31:58Clair Buckley:Dad shoes are like New Balance. Yeah. And he goes, oh, well, like Grandpa's shoes. And he goes, oh, no. and also New Balance are cool again yeah are they yeah they're not I don't think they look good I don't think so but people are wearing them I tell you one thing that Americans do badly and it's it's footwear they wear the most uncool trainers like go to New York famously cool city yeah one of the coolest cities look down look at everyone's shoes well it's because it's fucking sketches but it's because Because they go for comfort. They've got their nice shoes in their bag because they've got to walk.

32:39They've got to commute.

32:40Clair Buckley:No, even the kids. Even the kids on the way to school and stuff. You look at their shoes and you go, fuck me. Right. I'd get the shit kicked out of me if I turned up to school looking like that. Again, I think it's a different mindset. Like, they're like, well, because Harrison and Jude, well, Jude especially, he doesn't give a shit. He's like, these are comfy. This is what I'm wearing. And I'm like, but they look shit. Yeah. Like, put on your sambas. and he's like, no, they're too tight and did it. He's like, these are comfy and I'm like, fine. I know, too sensible, aren't they? Yeah. Kids. Yeah.

33:11I'm like, break your, you should have blisters on your feet just because you look good.

33:17Clair Buckley:Let's have a look at some of the biggest things making a comeback right now, Claire. Digital cameras and camcorders. Love that. We've also seen a lot of movie and TV shows being revived over the last couple of years. new Toy Story I mean they're always going to make a new Toy Story do you think well the last one was supposed to be the last one I know but they always say although I think people weren't happy they should have stopped at three I wasn't I wasn't Woody left I wasn't they didn't make any sense I know I think we've already got angry about this Toy Story Scream they've got to stop making those do you reckon yeah absolutely Malcolm in the Middle I was quite excited when I heard that Malcolm in the Middle was coming back but I've not watched it yet the boys watch it Harrison and Jude like Malcolm is that right yeah Scary Movie it was a new Scary Movie that's right yeah I've not seen that yet that wasn't really my thing either I loved Scary Movie it wasn't really my thing I loved the the first one's just brilliant it was really I've seen them but I was like that first one when that first one came out it just really sort of captured a moment it was a very I remember all the boys at school saying like the lines and stuff like that was a very the boys loved it I know yeah like it's like they do a whole like what's that bit and stuff yeah like it was just it was just that moment it just sort of really came just at the right time oh Naked Gun they made a Naked Gun a remake of that recently I've not seen it I've not seen it I've not even seen the old ones but it's Liam Neeson I know you love it oh yeah and Pamela Anderson that's right but um I love Liam Neeson don't get me started on Neeson I love him oh oh Madonna me handsome man love Neeson handsome handsome man love him even still still got it you know what else we got here Baywatch now Baywatch is coming back as a TV show right it's back I'm sure I've seen it coming up on Disney Plus yeah they've all but they've also it was about four or five years ago they tried to bring Baywatch back again yeah there was a movie because it wasn't Zac Efron in it yeah I've got to be honest I've got a big problem with that movie I've got to be honest let it go a little bit the Baywatch thing it was funny for the time it wasn't supposed to be funny it was a drama yeah but it was women in bikinis do you know what I mean bathing suits whatever do you know what I mean yeah so it was like who was your favourite oh Pam oh really oh it's got to be I thought it would be Yasmin Yasmin Bleaf yeah she's lovely in basketball in what?

36:04Clair Buckley:it's a Trey Parker and Matt Stone film oh okay oh they're all do you know what Claire I'd let you pick for me I'd go yeah sure whatever whatever one fair enough fair enough yeah that Baywatch film I had a big problem with the Baywatch film oh you just got a problem with Efron I do because he's so handsome no no I've not got a problem with that Andy's funny. No, see, that's where we fall apart. Honestly, I had to listen to a whole TED talk about this on a few occasions. Because there was, about 10 years ago, it was quite in vogue to put Will Ferrell with... Mark Wahlberg. Mark Wahlberg. Someone who's known for comedy, someone who's not known for comedy, give them a chance to be funny, but there is some safe hands there with a funny person in that film.

37:00Clair Buckley:It works. It's great. You know, Kevin Hart, The Rock, them two together, what's not to love? Little guy, great big massive guy. Just visually it's funny. Well, yeah. Do you know what I mean? When The Rock then started being like, well, I'm a comedic actor now. I can do comedy. so you had that what was that film about Seth Rogen Seth Rogen and Zac Efron is it called Neighbours is it literally called Neighbours Bad Neighbours Bad Neighbours or something like that so you've got Seth Rogen the funny guy and I like that film it's quite funny Zac Efron not known for being funny but gets a chance to be a bit funny in a film then you get Zac Efron and The Rock going well we're both comedic actors now so we should team up and do a comedy film together right and you go well hang on a minute there's nobody funny there's nobody funny in this film You've forgotten the thing that makes it work But they're funny now They're not, it turns out Turns out they're not Turns out that they're great Alongside a funny person And they can be funny in that situation But to ask The Rock and Zac Efron Have they done a film together?

38:09Clair Buckley:Baywatch Oh, and was that a comedy? I think it was Right but you went on about Zac Efron being the funny guy so much I was like where does that leave me Claire? where does that leave me? look at him he's got enough have you got Zac Efron being the funny guy now it's like well I won't fucking bother anymore shall I? maybe you could be the he would be funny you would be handsome yeah that would be weird wouldn't it? that would be weird The Mummy 4 which I think oh I've never never watched them we've had this conversation have you not watched The Fucking Mummy it's not my thing oh it's a great film it's not my thing that first Mummy film is absolutely brilliant not for me and they're all coming back right and is George of the Jungle doing them yes oh I love him yeah he's great yeah alright well Claire's not fussed about The Mummy 4 no absolutely not Tom Cruise She's already tried to do the mummy thing.

39:14Clair Buckley:Again, a lot of these things that are coming back, they're on their second try. They're on their second sort of... Are people just running out of ideas? Yes, Claire. Yes. Claire, here's a list of things that haven't made a comeback yet, but should they? I've had a quick look at this list, and my answer is just blanket yes. Okay. Yes to all. Yes to all of them. Okay. Typewriters. We've got a typewriter. We've got a typewriter. Yep. Landlines. Got one of them. Maybe they don't need to come back. No, I tell you what. It's just people asking me if I've been in a car accident. It scares the shit out of me when that landline rings.

39:50Yeah. I know it's either something bad or something annoying.

39:53Clair Buckley:Yeah. Woolworths. Oh, I loved Woolworths. And the massive picking mix bit. I wonder if it was massive. I was just thinking that. I bet it wasn't. I bet it just felt massive to us. I bet if we went in there now. Yeah. Because you would. You'd have to lean. But it was the top ones as well. oh getting to do a pick and mix at Willis man what a day pianos in pubs come on certain type oh everyone around the Joanna a certain type well that takes remember when I went to Paris for my mates hen do we went to a speakeasy I was talking about it and it was a piano and a guy singing and then a woman came on later and it was brilliant it really was great but do you want that I mean in the pub everyone having a sing song it would have to be a time it came out it would have to be like after nine yeah everyone's a bit pissed right yeah sure why not everyone's a bit pissed then you're gonna get the dickhead that touches it every time he goes by it

40:57it's just gonna happen no you won't no you won't get that I don't think we're I don't think we're

41:02Clair Buckley:we're mature enough no I don't think we're well to do enough anymore no piano's in pubs I'd be well up for it everyone having a sing song fine especially at Christmas imagine that that'd be cute little sort of music hall songs fine okay yes pack up your troubles in your old kid bag and smile smile smile okay that's actually a good idea to for a no doctors in doctor's coats oh yeah they are a bit casual they are a bit they are they are I was literally just thinking about the guy that I was seeing in my little hospital chilled out entertainment They're a bit of a entertainer these days, aren't they?

41:41Get a bit of cash. Yeah. Not a stethoscope and sighting. No. Yeah, bring back the doctor's coats. I like that. I feel like I'll trust what they're saying more.

41:53Clair Buckley:Right. Let's have a swipe. Okay. Because we've got a feature. Great. CB. Yeah. Why are you calling me that now? CBGBs. I like that. It is time for a regular feature. Go on. What is it? It's Buckley's Law. Nice.

42:16Clair Buckley:this is the part of the podcast where we read out your requests for laws that should be passed and some of them will become law when we get in power absolutely they will it's quite i've realized we've got a lot to do by the way when we get in power i know uh just a little reminder keep your buckley's laws coming in by emailing thebuckleys at platform media.uk or you can message us on Instagram and TikTok. Our name is TheBuckley'sPod. Right, Oliver's here, who says, Dear James and Claire, I'd like to propose a new law. Anyone who stands outside a restaurant reading every single item on the menu in the window should be gently escorted away from society.

42:54Clair Buckley:Sometimes you want to know what's going on before you go in the restaurant. Why are you nodding? Too much, though. Too much. Have a quick look. Don't stand in a wee crowd, run about where you go to get in. Oh, they do have nachos. You like nachos, don't you? What's the point of putting the menu out on the front then? What's the point of the menu being there? Enter it. Not the people who glance at it for 10 seconds, fair enough. Check the prices, make sure it's your sort of place. I'm talking about the menu archaeologists, the ones who block the pavement and the doorway. Well, that's poor. They should move the menu to somewhere else while conducting a forensic examination of every starter, side and dessert.

43:33That's it, they take too long. In my defence, I check the menu before we go.

43:37Clair Buckley:places some of them are and that's it as well look up on your phone and move out the way if you need to know everything I agree and we all over on this one what's worse is when you're sitting outside trying to enjoy your meal and some stranger is looming over you to read the wall menu enough yes and while we're legislating can we also ban people who queue for 10 minutes in coffee shops finally reach the counter and then only start wondering what they fancy yeah so it's it's dawdlers he doesn't like doddlers hang her about doddling come up know what you're doing yes absolutely I'm very much in favour of that absolutely which is why I do check menus online before I go to a restaurant but that's different sitting down at the table I don't even want people sitting down at the table sitting down at the table and reading it's fine surely you know what you want you know where we are we've been here before taking too long to do anything's annoying yeah but all of our both of those absolutely spot on I had a classic the other day busy busy on the train getting to the turnstiles and that was when some woman decided to go through a bag and try and find a travel card and look for a card unbelievable ridiculous like it literally was like it made a traffic jam it made a a crash right people were bumping into each other because it was like one in one in one in oh and then it just stopped at all the all the momentum that was going on.

45:08Made a bottleneck.

45:09Clair Buckley:Yeah. Anyway, thanks for all the laughs. If Parliament won't introduce these laws, perhaps the Buckley's podcast can. I got you, mate. Thank you, Oliver. Yep. I got you. Classic stuff, that. Yep. From Oliver to Ollie, who says, Hi, guys. Something that infuriates me and needs to be banned. The usage of decimal points in the out of 10 rating system. Ooh. Okay. I'll be honest, I don't really get involved with rating systems enough for this to be a problem for me. Well, but I think if I said to you, how was your nachos? I don't know why I'm obsessed with nachos right now, but how were they? And you said 8.3, just say 8.

45:55Clair Buckley:Right. So Ollie's system should be perfect, 10 out of 10. Yeah. Hate it, 0 out of 10. Don't love it, don't hate it, 5 out of 10. Yeah. he doesn't want 7.4 out of 10 yeah get a grip it's either 7 or it's 8 there is surely nothing that can make you need to pinpoint an even more precise rating I get it I do get it because it would put you off if you asked somebody's opinion on something and they went I'd give it a 7.2 you'd be like hmm why do you know what what is it do you know what I'm realising I never ask people what they think about something no no I never go, oh, what do you think of that? Because I've already decided what I think of it, and that's all that matters.

46:41Well, takeaways do it on, like, delivery apps.

46:44Clair Buckley:Yeah. So, like... Well, that's it. You've got to have an average. You've got to have... So I might be swayed to go for a 4.6. Over a... Four. Well, yeah, obviously. Exactly. So it makes a huge difference. they're not going to be getting 5 star reviews constantly but what about a 4.2 over a 4 would that sway you as well probably they've had a few more 5 star reviews yeah that stuff's important ok there you go then sorry Ollie Claire we've got to put this fucking thing out of its misery yeah let's do it let's take it to the back door and shoot it that's it for this week's episode of the Buckleys thanks for listening remember you can get in touch with your stories and questions by emailing thebuckleys at platformmedia.uk or you can message us at thebuckleyspod on Instagram and TikTok.
