0:14Clair Buckley:This episode is brought to you by Tilda Rice, the UK's number one rice brand. Tilda have been the rice experts for over 50 years and they actually age their basmati for up to 18 months so that it cooks fluffy and separate. None of that sticky, sloppy school dinner rice that we were used to. It was just one big pot of sticky sadness, wasn't it, Claire? Sadness. That was my nickname at school. Sticky sadness. Okay, well, luckily, Tilda's there to save me from your rice crimes. They've got whole grain for when you're pretending to be good, fluffy basmati for fake away Friday, and those two-minute pouches for when we've argued about dinner for so long that it's practically the next day.
0:54Clair Buckley:Yeah, and the flavours. Don't get me started. I've smashed through them all. Peri peri, Caribbean rice and peas, the spicy Mexican one. It's next level stuff, Claire. Yeah. Honestly. That's my favourite one. I mean, the one we probably use the most together is just the pure basmati. That's great for when we're trying to be good and we make our own curry. When we make a healthy curry. Yeah. Have a little pure basmati, sure. Yeah. Maybe, if we're feeling a bit fruity, Claire, we might go for a coconut. Yeah. We'll see, you know. the night takes us. So whether it's a quick lunch, fake away Friday or a proper family dinner, Tilda has got you covered.
1:34Clair Buckley:Whatever the night, if rice is on the table, Tilda's the way to elevate your plate. Tilda!
1:42I've got some pumpkins. I've always got...
1:46Clair Buckley:I just looked at them. I just went like... It was if they knew. I just realised there's cameras. That dead stuffed bat. Where is that? Upstairs. I'm not allowed up the stairs, am I? I'm a downstairs husband. You'll go upstairs when you're ready to join all the other dead bodies up there. Is that right? Yeah. I've seen videos of aliens, ghosts, mermaids, all these things. You've been going through my search history. What's the saying when you hear hoofs? Clip-clops or whatever, hoof-beats. Hoof-prints? Think horse, not zebra. It's a very well-known saying, that, Claire.
2:25Clair Buckley:Hello and welcome to The Buckleys, the podcast where we sit down, have a chat, moan a bit and invite you into our lives. Before we get into it, we just want to remind you that you can get in touch with your stories and questions by emailing thebuckleys at platformmedia.uk or you can message us at thebuckleyspod on Instagram and TikTok. And don't forget to follow and subscribe to the show on Spotify or whatever podcast app that you like to use. And if you do enjoy the show, why don't you go ahead and leave us a review after? Hey, you alright? Yeah, Phil and Betty at home. Well, obviously. You're feeling spooky.
2:56Yeah.
2:56Clair Buckley:It's a spooky episode. It's the Halloween listener special, Claire. Do you know what? You can't just put the word special in stuff. I know. How many specials have we had? Whenever we say special, it means Guy couldn't fucking think of anything. How are you? You alright? I'm alright. Yeah? Yeah. How are you? I'm okay. Bit of a little faux pas this morning. Right. I'm telling this one. It was all poorly timed. I'm telling this one and you can make up your mind. So we're in the train station, walking up the stairs and you know like stairs have a little corner and then you go up the second. The stairwell, yeah.
3:34So there was an old woman and she was old. She was an old woman, yeah. And she had a big suitcase and she was standing. She had made it up the first flight and she was standing and she had her suitcase in front of her. And I thought, oh God. And me and James were just about to pass her and I said to James, help that old woman with the suitcase. and he went, oh, my knee. And then carried on walking.
3:55Clair Buckley:No. And I stood there and I was like, did he? Right, hang on. Actually. Hang on, here's what happened. I didn't notice the old lady. If I saw an old lady with a suitcase, don't mind helping her out with a suitcase. She was right there. I didn't see the old lady. I was in my own little head for a second. I wish she was a ghost. Maybe. Maybe only I could see her. No, because there was a bloke behind me. Yeah, because I then said. Straight away grabbed the suitcase. The problem is, right, It was all really poorly timed. The timing was unbelievable. I didn't notice the old lady. I'm having problems with my knees these days.
4:26Clair Buckley:I don't know what's going on. We're walking up these stairs. My knee popped. You turned. Just as I said. My knee popped and I went like that and you turned round. And I didn't hear what you said. And I thought you turned round to say, are you okay? Because my knee went. And then I just carried on walking. And then you were going like that. And I was going, what, what? And then I looked behind me and I saw the old lady. I just asked you to help that old lady and you went, oh, my knee, and kept walking. Then you couldn't stop laughing. I know, because it looked like you. Well, it looked like what it looked like.
4:59Clair Buckley:It looked like you went, can you help that old lady? And I just went, oh, my knee. So I saw the funny side of it, sure. But also, I was not avoiding to help an old lady with a suitcase. But I know what it looked like. Yeah, it certainly did, Jim. It was all just perfectly timed. like the universe just all happened at the same time and then you insulted me what did I say to you when I got a coffee yeah in front of the two women working at the little coffee stand yeah I didn't get a coffee this morning didn't have time I was running a bit late I said I'll get one at the station yeah got past the old lady fuck hard didn't help her got up to the coffee stand my knee was sore couldn't help her it's my time now you've had your time love she should have helped you if anything she should you're knee hot exactly right in front of you yeah got up to the coffee bit and i was like oh i'll have a little cappuccino start my day yeah the woman went is that all and i went yeah and he went get some chewing gum what's wrong with that the woman was like so then i felt like i had to make it i was like oh you don't want my coffee breath no you were like no i was like what is the matter with you today?
6:12I was like, you're like the rudest man ever in this train station.
6:17Clair Buckley:I was out of sorts this morning. Fuck you, old lady. Fuck you, old lady. Get some chewing gum, your breath stinks, bitch. That's not what I said. Like, he was just on a roll. No, I was out of sorts this morning. Go on, explain yourself. Oh, just stuff going on, just life stuff going on. And I was preoccupied with other things going on in my head on the journey in today. and it's knocked me. I'm out of my rhythm. Made you a dick. But I was just thinking of you because you're always going, let me know if I've got bad breath and stuff like that. You're always saying stuff like that to me. I'm not always saying that.
6:50I don't have bad breath.
6:51Clair Buckley:No, but you're always like, you've said a few times, have I got coffee breath and things? Well, yeah. Yeah. So I was just thinking ahead. I was just like, well. By the way, you did it. In front of those two women, I said, oh, I'll have a cappuccino. Is that it? Yeah, that's it. Thanks. Get chewing gum. How was I supposed to say that? You could have went, oh, do you want to get some chewing gum for after your coffee? I thought it made it look like it was for me. Because you were like, oh, do you want anything? I saw that. Look, I'm re-recording. I tell you this, man. I went, no, I'm all right. And then I went, oh, get some chewing gum.
7:21Clair Buckley:So it looked like it was for me. No, it didn't. And I don't chew chewing gum because it's bad for you, actually. It's bad for your teeth. I know. You tell me that all the time. I love a bit of chuggy. I don't know. I don't know if that's true. We just had this conversation about you saying stuff. Because Harrison got me. Harrison did. Harrison's turning into James now with this thing where he explains stuff to me. He'll say, oh, this is because of this. I'm like, oh. You went, oh, right, yeah, no, that makes sense. You literally said that makes sense. Because it did. And then it was like five seconds of silence and I just went, proud of you.
7:55Clair Buckley:And you were like, what? And you were like, what? And I went, that was all bullshit. Yeah. He just made all that up. I could tell he made it up. It was brilliant. It was perfect. It did make sense. And he went, thanks, Dad. Yeah. Hey, Claire. What? It's a podcast. We're doing a podcast. It's a spooky special. Fuck off. It's a spooky special podcast. It's officially Halloween. It is. Halloween season. Oh, I love it. You love it, didn't you? I love it. The leaves are on the ground. Yeah, that's annoying. Oh, I love it. I love it. Fucking leaves, man. They don't stop. I wish they'd all just pop off altogether in one go.
8:32Clair Buckley:Just whoosh. In one day, yeah. No, then you don't get the vibes. You can still have the vibes, but once you clear them up... No. Love it. Then that's it. I love it. It gets really dark really early. That's annoying as well. Oh, I love it. I used to hate it. You get detention at school in the winter. Oh, maybe you should fucking behave yourself. Well, I was a bit of a lad, wasn't I? Were you? Yeah, I was cool, wasn't I? I was one of the bad boys. So I'd be leaving the school at half four, fucking street lamps and stuff on already, getting on a bus, freezing me nuts off. Bullshit, mate. Claire, how's the old Halloween prep going this year?
9:09I've got some pumpkins. I've always got... I've always got pumpkins.
9:16Clair Buckley:There's nothing you can do about that. No, I can't, no. I just looked at them. I just went like that. It looks like they're new. No, but you know, I just realised there's cameras. I said that to you the other day. Go on. We were having a conversation in the living room. And you looked at my boobs. I'm just looking at your eyes now. Yeah, you looked at my boobs when I was talking. And I was like, did you just look at my tits? And you were like, yeah, I'm allowed to. Yeah, I am allowed. Surely I'm allowed to. It's a bit inappropriate. No, I'm not as far ahead as I usually am. Because there's a question here saying, how early do you start?
9:56Usually it hits October and I am flying pumpkins everywhere. You've ruined pumpkins for my mind. I've not ruined anything. You've ruined pumpkins for me.
10:08Clair Buckley:Smashing pumpkins. See, the problem with our house, right, and I get this all the time, come early October or sort of early November, if we ever have somebody coming in, they're like, oh, you started decorating for Halloween already? Or, oh, you still got your Halloween stuff up? Yeah. And I'm like, no. When do I own business? No. These are the normal skulls. These are my house skulls. That's the thing with our house is that... When the Halloween skulls come out, you'll fucking know about it. Yeah. These are the everyday skulls. Our house does... All year skulls. Does just look quite spooky. Yeah.
10:45Clair Buckley:Anyway. It does, yeah. There is quite a lot of... It's a lot of death. It's a lot of death. That dead stuffed bat. Yeah. Where is that? I haven't seen that for a while. It's upstairs. I'm not allowed up the stairs, am I? I'm a downstairs husband.
11:04Clair Buckley:I'll see you at the bottom of the stairs in the morning when you're coming down Yeah You'll go upstairs when you're ready to join all the other dead bodies up there Is that right? Yeah I mean you can't talk though because here's the thing about James He always does this thing where he's like A lot of death in our house and the skulls You encourage it constantly What did you get me for my birthday last year? I got you a human skull an actual human skull yeah from where it was from an old medical it was used to teach doctors student doctors I assume is that your story where you got it from no it did come from a hospital skull right yeah that's what you bought me for my and it was expensive wasn't it yeah bloody human skull sets you back so he sets up we called him Arthur he sets up on the kitchen shelf That's in the kitchen.
11:59Yeah.
11:59Clair Buckley:Yeah, I'm just saying. Literally dead body in the kitchen. It's not a dead body. Not a body. No, it's the opposite, isn't it? It's a dead head. It's a head. Yeah, it's a severed head in the kitchen. Technically, yeah. Yeah. But listen, I know you like that stuff. I know, yeah. I guess when you say it like that, it does sound weird. It's not about me encouraging it. It's me going, oh, it's a birthday coming up. What do I know that she will definitely like? Because it's difficult. You're very difficult. There's lots of... I don't know what you like, do I? You don't like stuff, do you? I'm always telling you this you don't like anything you don't have any hobbies or anything like that you're always having a go at me for fixing up old Game Boys and things and I go well this is what people do they find something they enjoy that just makes them happy and you're always like I don't see the point I don't no so I thought what does she like she loves a skull I do and then I thought I wonder if I can get her an actual skull listen don't get me wrong it's one of the best presents I've ever had there you go it's right up there with my signed Sylvester Stallone picture.
12:58Clair Buckley:Yeah. Costumes. Any costumes planned? I'm not very adventurous with my Halloween costumes. I'm a same one every year. Wednesday. Wednesday. Wednesday. I'm going to, I could just do Jay from the Inbetweeners. You could. Because I've got the actual blue jumper and tie that I've worn. I could just do that every year, couldn't I? You could, yeah. I don't really like dressing up, I'll be honest with you. No, you don't. Remember that time, it was a few years ago, now Harrison, we had a big party for Harrison. Well, that's another reason why we like Halloween so much as well is that our son was born on the 26th and it's around October so we always do make a thing.
13:35Clair Buckley:We make a thing for his birthday and it's Halloween. Yes. And he loves Halloween. Yeah. And a few years ago now we did a big Halloween party and kids and adults dressed up. All our friends came and they were all dressed up. I was Wednesday and I made you dress up as... Michael Myers. Michael Myers. And oh my God. I thought, let me get him something easy. it's a boiler suit, right? The drama about the mask. It stank. He would put it on for two seconds and then he'd be like... It was all like... Claire, I can't keep this dog. It all smelled chemically. I can't. It was like this rubber sort of, I don't know, latex-y sort of thing.
14:14Yeah, get on with one day. It looked good.
14:16Clair Buckley:It looked like a proper bit of kit and stuff. It wasn't like a shit... No, I bought a proper one. It absolutely stank. The boys have had some good ones. The boys have had great ones. Haven't they? The Edward Scissorhands one that Harrison did. And that was another thing as well. Like when they used to go to primary school, Harrison was Edward Scissorhands. Jude was Chucky one year. And you go like, Claire like does all the makeup and puts all scars and scratches on their faces. Yeah, I don't just paint them on. I do like the latex. Yeah, the prosthetic stuff. And honestly, they look like you put in so much work into them, didn't you?
14:51The Beetlejuice one was really good as well.
14:52Clair Buckley:The Beetlejuice one was really good. Yeah. But you can see the other parents going, ooh. Yeah. Oh, here she comes. Oh, God. But people were beeping the kids and stuff on the way to school. So the Edward Scissorhands one was especially special. Yeah. Because we could not find an Edward Scissorhands costume. So I made one. Yeah. And I started making it at the beginning of October for his last day at school before the October half term. it took me about three weeks to make it and I'd like cut up belts and stuck them on and did everything and we did even his face we had the picture of Johnny Depp and we copied exactly every scar yeah it was a lot of effort that went into it but it looked well good that was probably my best one but yeah no the other parents were like alright calm down yeah it's the only time I put in an effort that was your thing as well because you'd get like kids turning up as Spider-Man and stuff like that and you're like that's not Halloween that's just fancy dress I've got a real problem if I invite you to a Halloween party you better come within the theme of Halloween don't come as I gave Danny into trouble Odair turned up as Boy George yeah I don't know why he had a Boy George costume I mean it was a good costume to be fair but I was like I don't like when people come to Halloween parties and they're not scary speaking of Halloween costumes we actually asked listeners to send in their best and scariest costume efforts.
16:24Clair Buckley:I've got some scary ones for you here, Claire. Crikey. This is from Lisa, who dressed up her son, then aged six, as It. I don't know if it looks like It. Well, I was going to say I'm allowed to say that's not It. It's not It. It's not It. But it's fine. It's a good costume, but it's not technically It. We've got a picture from Paul. He looks a bit like a zombie. Yeah, that's actually really good. It's as if like the half of his face is missing. The skin has come away from his teeth and stuff. It's really good. Yeah, that's really good. Nikki's headless woman Halloween attempt is excellent, apparently.
17:01Unless she's seven feet tall, then I can sort of see the costume. It's a good attempt. Yeah. Hey, listen, I appreciate it. Ooh.
17:10Clair Buckley:Here's one from proper professional SFX artist, Little Things by G. See now that's something you should find You don't like the holes So that's a lady with half her face Being eaten by maggots Really good And then we've also got Dan's werewolf attempt Oh that's quite good Oh he's even got fur on his hands He's got fur on his hands You could do that with it Look at the knuckles I don't know what's up with my hands Lycanthropy I think it's called Werewolfism And then we've got some funny efforts Let's see how funny they are Jen says they don't quite make Halloween costumes like they used to And here's her dressed as a house That is a little girl with a house round her neck I mean back in the day parents did not care did they How many of us went with a bin bag and some white face paint on I don't know how that was a thing I've got a story actually That's how you look like Dracula When I was at primary school, or my family still talk about this because it's absolutely mental, my mum wasn't there for the day of Halloween.
18:23And my aunt, who's my mum's youngest sister, so she was always like the kind of young, cool one, right? She dressed me up and took me to primary school. I must have been about nine or ten. She dressed me up as a Playboy bunny. Oh. Okay. It took me to school. She was in charge of my Halloween costume because my mum was like, you need to get her dressed, you need to take her that day. She was like, yeah, I'll do it. So nobody ever really questioned what she was doing. She had ordered me a black leotard, fishnet tights, bunny ears, and then she had stuck some cotton wool on my bum and I just wore my little black school shoes.
19:04When I went there, now I went to a tiny little school in our tiny little village, so even my mum...

19:10Clair Buckley:This is all in Scotland. Yeah. Everybody knew, like, all the teachers knew, like, our family, whatever, it was all very... But one of the teachers, like, a few days later, said to my mum, oh, that was a bit... You know, we were all talking about Claire's costume. And my mum was like, why? When I told her what she did, she was furious. I thought it was great. Oh, and I had a tray as well. She wrapped a tray in tinfoil. I was fucking walking around school With the ears hanging out I didn't know what I was I just thought I was some sort of weird rabbit waitress I was a playboy bunny I went appropriate Yeah really inappropriate Kerry's son went as a Mexican ghost So just a sheet over the head With a sombrero Perfect Perfect And Emmy and her partner went as the twins from The Shining Oh my god I love that That is good That is good I mean they do just look like the twins from The Shining That is funny Okay, this segment is sponsored by, in case you can't tell, Silent Night.
20:16Hey James, you do often look quite tired.
20:20Clair Buckley:Thanks. Well, I am tired. You know I'm tired. I'm a tired man. Well, that is because quite often you'll fall asleep on the chair at 6pm while you're doomscrolling your lobster fisherman videos. And then you're up until midnight. Yeah. I'm knackered from, you know, the usual stuff. Yeah. Cooking, cleaning the kids, running the house, doing all the stuff that actually makes you tired. Yeah. Anyway, luckily for us, James, Silent Night have a three-step sleep reset that we can try to get us sleeping like babies again. Oh, thank God. I've never understood that saying, I slept like a baby. Babies famously don't sleep.
21:01Clair Buckley:Ours don't, didn't. I mean, they're not babies anymore. Teenagers, no. I still haven't seen Jude with his eyes shut. I don't know when that boy goes to sleep he's awake when I go to bed and he's awake when I wake up he's just a party animal before I tell you about the silent night steps do you have any little steps that you like to take? I do actually I feel like we've already covered James's well no not just my night time routine but there's also little things now again I've got this off of social media so I don't know if it's true or not but apparently there is a breathing technique that the SAS use to help them fall asleep quickly when they're in sort of battle zones and things like that.
21:38Clair Buckley:Apparently you fill up your lungs until they can't be filled anymore and then you blow out until you cannot get any air back in them and then you hold that for a few seconds and then you breathe in again. It's about sort of like breathing deep. So they pass it? Maybe that might be it. That might be it, yeah. Well, how about this, right? This little plan was put together by the Silent Night Sleep Experts and it's about around three simple resets. you reset your mind done shifting how you think about sleep so it feels less pressured and more relaxed you reset your body strengthening your natural sleep rhythm and building a proper sleep drive and you reset your lifestyle creating daily routines and habits that support energy and take the pressure off of sleep yes so reset your mind do you have anything that you do to reset your mind i mean your mind doesn't really work on overdrive does it my mind doesn't switch off I'm always telling you I'm a delicate genius.
22:34That's that, that's the one.
22:36Clair Buckley:And it's always as you're just about to fall asleep where your brain goes, oh, do you remember when you caught yourself in the mirror just wearing a vest and nothing else and you look like an idiot? That would keep me awake as well. Exactly. Some of the options that they've got for resetting your mind is write down your worries before bed, reframe your panic thoughts. So it's like, I'll get some sleep and I'll deal with that tomorrow. Now, I love that. I love putting stuff off until the next day. Yeah. I think that makes me sleep better. The amount of times in bed you go tomorrow and then you drift off straight away.
23:12Reset your body examples. This is a good one. Don't clock watch in the middle of the night. Yeah. Clock watch.
23:20Clair Buckley:Yes. And I do do this. Anytime I wake up in the middle of the night, I always check the time. And then in my head, I figure out how much time I've got left to sleep. I've done that sometimes at like half four in the morning. Yeah. Say if it's a 6am start, I've got to be up at 6 o 'clock and it's half four, I go, oh, that's it now, innit? Because by the time... Might as well just get up. Yeah. Right, reset your lifestyle examples. Yeah. This is a good one as well. They've said set a cut off time for social media slash screens before bed. That is a good one, yeah. Everybody knows that, but nobody does it.
23:55Clair Buckley:Yeah. Oh, listen to this one, Claire. Build mini stress breaks into the day. stretch deep breaths and a mindful cup of tea there's something about breathing that's important i don't i'm not a doctor i'm not a scientist claire no is it any of those steps that you would be up for doing absolutely yeah there's a couple straight away i definitely feel that having a cut off for looking at your phone yeah looking at social media and stuff like that is an easy thing to do and a necessary thing to do and i'm gonna give that a try i'm gonna give myself at a certain point I'm going to say right at this hour the phone's going down I'm going to give that a go I think that's a good one what about you Claire?
24:33I'm going to try and do the not looking at the clock in the middle of the night I feel like if you don't know what time it is you'll drift off to sleep a bit better so I'm going to try that one okay so we are going to give Silent Night's three step sleep reset a go this week and you can try it as well if you go to silentnight.co.uk
24:53Clair Buckley:we've got to moan haven't we we've got to have a fucking moan at some point, are we? Anything about Halloween you'd like to moan about? Oh, absolutely not. Never. Me too, to be fair. I think people are listening to this podcast and going, come on, Buckley, give us one of your Halloween. You must hate it. Because I'm such a scrooge, you know, all these cool things. But they're going, yeah, he's going to really, he's going to tear Halloween a new one. Yeah, go on. You know, he's going to burn Halloween now. I like Halloween. You've got to like Halloween in my house, obviously. Otherwise you're not going to get on.
25:23Clair Buckley:Otherwise you will burn. We must live in a shit place or something because no one does trick-or-treating. No. No one does trick-or-treating where we live. We were just talking to Katie there and she was going, oh, you should come around where I live. They go all out. We get none of that where we live at all whatsoever. No one's into it. We don't get any trick-or-treaters. No, not really. We don't take the boys out. A handful. We've taken the boys out a couple of times, but it was like we took them out and it was like you knocked on the door on Halloween and gone trick-or-treat and they look at you like, what?
25:53Yeah.
25:53Clair Buckley:What do you mean? What? Yeah. So I don't know what it is about where we live, but no one's fucking into it at all whatsoever. I think there are certain areas. I think it's always been like that. You either live there or you don't. It's a big thing up in Scotland. Scotland, yeah. Especially Ayrshire. But we don't celebrate on Halloween. No, you celebrate on the payday. The last Friday of October. The last Friday of October, payday is where everyone goes out for Halloween. It's a fucking good time. Yeah, brilliant. Where we are, it's nothing. After a couple of years, we were like, oh, they don't really do it.
26:25Clair Buckley:But just in case someone does. We always have sweeties. We always do get sweeties in. But I remember one year, I think we were out for Halloween, actually. I think that's what it was. And we put a bucket. We did. A great big bucket of chocolates and sweets and stuff. Yep. And also good stuff as well. We don't fucking, we don't try and rip the kids off. No, there's no apples or anything. No, there's no apples or anything like that. But it's proper like, you know, bars. Yeah. Things like that, right? They're all gone, obviously, by the time we go back. Yep. We watched the old ring doorbell there See where they went I think it was like two kids and a mum And a mum Yeah Emptied the fucking thing I was furious Do you know I found out who they are?
27:05Clair Buckley:You did did you? I did Interesting Yeah Interesting I did I managed to find out Do we name and shame? Let us know in the comments I managed to find out who they are And I know where they live Let us know in the comments Do we name and shame? Next Did she have a fag on as well? No she didn't Just in my head she did go on go on stick it all in there go on just just take it all just take it all I'll tell you one of the problems because you're saying up where I live it is big and the doorbell goes all night long yeah yeah but see after about eight nine o 'clock the doorbell keeps going but the kids just get older and older and older and there's less and less costumes being presented yeah and my dad always gets to a point where he'll open the door and it's like two 15, 16-year-old boys with a black t-shirt on and a bit of blood at the side of their mouth.
27:59My dad's like, fuck off.
28:00Clair Buckley:Yeah. Get to fuck. Yeah. Which I don't think you should. I think if kids are still wanting to do it, you should let them do it. As long as they've got... No, that's a scam. They're trying to scam out of some sweets. Oh, come on, it's one night. 15, 16-year-olds. You're stopping some little boys. But they're usually done by then. They're usually in their bed by then. Sorry, I had to get that out. I had to because it was all stuck in my belly. If we did get trick-or-treaters, do you do that thing where you wait for them to do something for it because you're supposed to have a joke. I had a trick.
28:42That's what we had today. I had a trick. You had to have a joke ready. I had a little card trick. A card trick?
28:47Clair Buckley:Yeah, that was my trick. It was a card trick. I'd shuffle the cards. I'd get them to pick the card, put it back in the pile, shuffle the card again and I'd show them their card. They're like, oh yeah, really good. Nowadays they just turn up and they're just starting there. I think it's turned into, the trick is you get vandalised or something. You get your window smashed in. If you don't get a treat. Petrol bombed. Here's your trick. Watch this. Did you ever do anything like that? Did you ever egg anybody's fist and stuff? Yeah. Yeah, so did I. Yeah, I feel awful now. Why? It's just not a nice thing to do, is it?
29:21Whose was it? Whose house was it?
29:23Clair Buckley:It was a bloke's house, right? To be fair, he was a bit of a knob on the estate, right? But he was well proud of his lawn in his front garden. So we egged the shit out of it. But to be fair, eggshells and stuff is good for your lawn. Good, yeah. Now that I think about it. Yeah, you should have just said to him, just get out and water it in the morning, you'll be fine. This episode is brought to you by Deliveroo. Claire, family life is hectic. It is. There's nothing we can do about that. No. Especially with two boys. They're never not hungry. Never full. Neither are you, though. I'm just greedy.
29:55Clair Buckley:The boys have an excuse. They're growing. They are, yeah. Well, Claire, when you're a parent, you deal with stuff like that all day long. So sometimes sorting dinner can feel like a stretch, which is why Deliveroo have come up with family dinneroo. Yep, it lets you feed the whole family for£25 or less with meals the whole family will love, like Itzu for a taste of Japan or Prezzo Italian for fresh Mediterranean flavours. Oh, molto bella. Prices exclude fees. See deliveroo.co.uk for details. right anyway we have had a bunch have we of listener stories oh all right um are they spooky stories well they've got in touch with their own spooky stories so what we're going to do now is debunk or prove or at least try and prove i bet we don't i bet we don't i say that before every before every sort of like ghost hunters sort of tv show i say we're going to try and prove tonight the existence of ghosts and I go and I go I bet you don't just last night we were watching an episode of Mr Ballin my favourite YouTuber we were having some dinner and we were watching a Mr Ballin episode and he went through this whole thing it was like a reincarnation story and da da da and he sort of got to the end and he was like and this was just the proof that they need it and then honestly we couldn't get through three seconds of him talking and James just kept going well it's not Well, you don't.
31:43Clair Buckley:The proof was... Well, it's not. I think can we just enjoy it? The story was a toddler kept saying that he had reoccurring dreams of him in a plane crash. Then he pointed at a book, a World War II book, a picture of Iwo Jima and said, oh, I was there. That was where my plane crashed. And then the dad was trying to find... To reveal the dad sounded about nuts. Yeah, the dad met up with a load of World War II vets and said, did anyone crash their plane? to an Iwo Jima. And apparently the story is, yes, only one person. And they were like, right, who was that then? And it was someone called James.
32:20Clair Buckley:And he was like, my son's called James. That was the proof. But rather, listen, I get it, right? We were just having a little spooky night. We were watching a bit of balling. I love balling as much as the next person. I weren't having that one. That was rubbish. That was rubbish. But you will not just let it play. You're like, well, how is that proof, Claire? because it's got the same name. Fucking everyone's called James, isn't they? Also. I'm called James. Also, I mean, I'd have to do some... Yeah, that's what I was saying. I was like, I'd have to do some research myself. But I'm guessing more than one plane crashed during the Battle of Iwo Jima.
32:55Well, anyway.
32:56Clair Buckley:That's what they were saying. They were like, it's really weird because only one plane crashed. Was shot done. Yeah, shot down. Yeah. Yeah, whatever. Yeah. Well, when you get shot down, what happens? Right, but I'm just saying that was the specifics anyway. Wait, read a listener story. Jacqueline is here. Spelled with a Q, U and E. I like that spelling of Jacqueline. The subject is footsteps on the carpet. Reminds me, baby, of you. That's not what it says. Hey, guys. This is footage from... What? Footage? Oh. Oh, yes. This is footage from the CCTV in the building where the charity I work with is based.
33:34Clair Buckley:If you watch the floor area towards the bottom of the frame and follow the orbs, It genuinely looks like footsteps walking to the door at the back It is not edited in any way Which properly freaked me out when I saw it The building is really old and used to be a police station The back rooms still have bars on the windows Just thought I'd send it to see what you think Although I'm sure James will poo-poo it Yeah, you know me Nah, I'm not having it, not having it We're going to watch it together now Okay, ready? Yeah, yeah, yeah Oh right, there's an orb I see an orb Watch the floor It's footsteps He wouldn't even know if a fuck A ghost could come up And slap you in the face No, no, no, no Because I'm a professional At this sort of stuff Watch the floor No There's footsteps I don't see any footsteps at all I see the orb though The orb's enough Watch the footsteps Stop James, how are you no seeing that?
34:30Clair Buckley:What's that video game I play? James, hold on Look, look, look I want you to see this Watch the floor Oh yeah, yeah Oh, yeah. Fucking hell, man. Oh, yeah. Now we see it. It goes right to the door. And then there's the orb. I was waiting for the orb and then to see the footsteps. There's footsteps and then there's an orb. That's fucking weird, man. That is weird. Do you know what? That's exactly like I played it. Oh, what's that video game I play? What is it called? Oh, I haven't played it for a while. The one you and Joe used to play all the time. Yeah, me and Joe Sugg used to play it all the time.
35:06Clair Buckley:But that's what the video game is. It is proper scary. like is really, really scary. Oh, I need to know the name of the video game. But that's what you do. You're a ghost hunter. Yeah. And you go to a haunted house and you set up cameras and things like that and you need to find... Phasmophobia. Phasmophobia. And you need to try and identify what type of ghost it is. And you use the clues. So there will either be orbs or it will leave fingerprints or the temperature will go below zero and stuff like that. And you're a little detective and you finally work out. But... I should play this. Throughout the game, also, the lights start going and stuff, and it goes on a hunt.
35:43Clair Buckley:It starts hunting and things, and you have to hide. But the ghost does. Yeah, the ghost, and it can kill you. Right. It's fucking, it's really, really terrifying, this game. No, I know. I remember I used to hear you screaming and stuff. Oh, my God, yeah. It was so terrifying. Do you remember that time you were playing a scary game for a Halloween stream? Yeah. And I came in and scared you? Yeah. And you really did scream. Yeah, I nearly shit myself. That is brilliant. I love that. That was... I absolutely love that. I don't think it's a ghost. What is it then? Whose footsteps are they? I think it's just...
36:15Look, so you got all excited. No, no, no. No, it looks brilliant.
36:18Clair Buckley:Don't get me wrong. It looks brilliant. It's never even 4K, is it? These things. It's never like... Even on the iPhone these days. The iPhone, 4K, 60 frames per second you can get. Yeah, but that's just CCTV. No one's catching any of this in 4K at 60 FPS. I'll tell you what, though. Here's my theory. Go on. Because I've seen videos of aliens. I've seen videos of ghosts. I've seen videos of mermaids. I've seen all these things. You've been going through my search history. Right. And some of them are so clear. Yeah. And you're seeing what you're seeing and people are going, my God, look what I saw today.
36:57I managed to get it on film. What happens?
36:59Clair Buckley:Go on. Everybody's like, oh, that's edited. That's another thing as well. Nobody believes anybody any time. I could film a demon walking into my front door and put it on the internet. People wouldn't believe it. So we're in the age of misinformation now, aren't we? Right. Where anyone can say anything. Everyone's a broadcaster. And anyone can say anything and just reach... Yeah, look at us. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Listen, I made a career out of it, sure. I had to say all kinds of nonsense. I don't know whether it's true or not. But I don't say anything dangerous. Do you know what I mean? Right. But people are allowed to say anything.
37:30Clair Buckley:Come up with any kind of harebrained theories about absolutely everything. but we're now coming there's a theory now that we're coming to the other side of that where because we're in the age of misinformation where we're getting to the point now where even real news people are going nah nah it's fake so now we're flipping and we're just not going to believe anything exactly that's what I'm saying yeah so you're saying oh it's never in 4k it's never clear you will have seen those videos but you will just automatically go that's not real listen I've watched top 15 and stuff all the time. Right.
38:05But you don't believe in it? I've not watched anything
38:06Clair Buckley:where it's like, yeah, that is definitive proof. The mermaid video. Number five. Love that guy. I think he's dealing his chilling. I think he's stopped now. He has stopped because he tried to become a rapper for a while. His voice is the worst thing about the whole thing. I know, yeah. What would you do if you saw a train coming towards you at fair speed? That's how he talks. I introduced him to him. I know, and I was like, oh, this is quite good. And then I was like, I've got to stop watching this now. That is annoying. I saw a video of a mermaid. Yeah. And it wasn't like the little mermaid, like the one who turned you on.
38:43No. It was all like creepy and weird. Well, hang on a minute.
38:46Clair Buckley:Go on. And it looked, it was like from kind of high above and she, and she, it was on. Was it a she? It was on a rock and it looked at the camera and then dove into it. Yeah, I've seen that. That's the fakest video you've ever seen. Yeah, see, there you go. No, but you can also tell it's fake. You don't know. You definitely can. I'm just saying. It's like all the videos are messy. Nobody believes it. That's because not only are they fake, they've gone, this was fake. I tried to just do an eyebrow lift in the camera there, but I had Botox the other day, so I couldn't do it. So if I looked really weird in the camera there, that's why.
39:21Right, next.
39:22Clair Buckley:Tell you what, Jacqueline. Oh, spooky. Oh, no. our Halloween decorations have fallen off from behind us now I don't know if that's a spirit or if the production team are rubbish we'll let you guys decide we should probably just mention while everybody's attention if you're watching this everybody's attention is behind us we should probably point out this guy behind me yeah we've got a mannequin to display the Chieftain's jersey there proudly sponsored by the Buckley's podcast but yeah Yeah, we need to get him some shorts or some trousers or something because he looks a bit odd. He's all right.
40:07Is he all right? Yeah, he's behind me. You're all right, aren't you?
40:11Clair Buckley:You're making me jealous. Don't do that. That video, though, just back to that video, we were distracted by the set falling apart, which is either a ghost or, as I say, because even Jacqueline says here, I'm sure James will poo-poo it. That's a good video, man. That's a good video. And it's not just the footsteps, it's the orb for me. See, I don't... Orbs are something I don't believe in. It's dust particles. All right. They're in all the videos that I take in my house at night. I know it's dust. No, no, yeah. Well, we know how, sure. But the orb plus the footsteps. If it was just those footsteps, I would have gone, no, that's just...
40:50Clair Buckley:That's a glitch in the... But because there's footsteps, and straight after the footsteps, Claire, straight after the footsteps, the orb comes. The orb doesn't come a little bit later. I'm not a believer in orbs. I don't believe in orbs. I don't think that's the thing. But if it is a dust particle that could have turned up at any time while we were watching that video it could have turned you know it turned up straight after those footsteps went away then you get a little orb. I'm trying to stick up for it. No I get it. I love it. I'm trying to get it on your side. You're in. We've got one here from Chris.
41:20Clair Buckley:It says oh did James write this subject? Was it you Guy? made a riot vaness. That doesn't work, does it? All right. Chris says, hi, love the podcast. I know Claire will enjoy this one. It comes with photo evidence. When me and my wife bought our first house five years ago, we removed an old built-in wardrobe and painted the wall behind it. We then went downstairs for a cuppa while the paint dried. When my wife went back up to check it, she called me upstairs properly panicking. the name Vanessa had appeared in the wet paint. At first, I accused her of doing it as a joke until I saw she was actually crying.
42:06Don't cry.
42:07Clair Buckley:I'm like James. Oh no! Vanessa! I'm like James. I don't believe in ghosts, but I've never come up with a good explanation for it. If James can think of one, I'd love to hear it. Right, first of all, Here's your explanation. Somebody in the past has painted their name on the wall and it's come through the new fresh paint. But they would have seen it before they painted it. No, maybe not. How does it come through fresh paint if you couldn't see it underneath the old paint? Because I assume the old paint wasn't white. Now it's white paint. Now you can see it. No, I don't know. We used to paint. You must have done that.
42:45Yeah.
42:46Clair Buckley:When you were redecorating your house and stuff. Yeah, yeah. Pulled all the wallpaper off. your dad would write a message and then wallpaper over it. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I remember we pulled the wallpaper off and we had a message from the family before. What did it say? It just had W-H-U and the irons thing. Oh, the old waste time.
43:09Clair Buckley:But here's something, and I think I might have told you this. In our loft, in our house in Dagenham, there was a really old suitcase and a pair of shoes that looked like Charlie Chaplin's shoes that had been nailed together. The shoes had been nailed together? There was, through the toes of the shoes, so the shoes were like that, and there was a nail going through them, like a big, thick, long nail. And then into the floor or just... No, just the shoes had been nailed together. That's a weird thing to do. The shoes had been nailed together next to this old suitcase. What was in the suitcase? Dad never opened it.
43:43Oh, for the... That would drive me insane. Sometimes you've got to leave stuff alone. No, you don't.
43:50Clair Buckley:You've got to leave stuff alone. Oh, man. But these shoes, they must have been Victorian or something like that. What did you do with the suitcase? Did you just chuck it out? Jordan. Just left it. Never? No, no, no. Never touched it. Oh, my God. I would not be able to sleep not knowing what was in that. But this is my feeling as well. I'm like this about everything. Just leave stuff. like because you know I don't believe in ghosts and things like that I always say I've been wrong about a lot of things in my life I'm rarely right yeah true so when you go should we do a Ouija board or something like that I'm always like nah let's leave it by the way that's not Santa City I'm afraid you made that sound as if I say that all the time and you're always going well I thought you didn't believe in it well yeah that's the point and my argument is always well I could be wrong so let's not fuck around and find out I've got a really great Halloween decoration my Ouija board it's battery operated yeah I got that for you yeah oh yeah you did but it sits on the coffee table and like if you just sort of move past it the thing will move it starts moving yeah love it that's good love it yeah that's an old message that was on the wall and has now come through the new paint okay there you go he poo pooed it there you go he poo pooed it I can smell paint now hang on one sec sorry right yeah no but we just we just had a quick little break so I could have a swig of beer and everyone's just started saying how we can all smell wet paint.
45:13That's not actually a joke I swear to God because you guys just said it over there and then I can smell paint now.
45:19Clair Buckley:We were just talking about a name coming through on wet paint and now we can smell wet paint. Mr Ballin get in touch we've got your next story. I love Mr Ballin. For the weird wild and mysterious. Right I have got the strange dark and mysterious come on Get it right, Jesus. That's what he does, every story. I love him. Right, so we've got one more story from Jess. This photo was taken in Florida in a villa we'd just arrived at for a holiday of a lifetime with our then five-year-old daughter. Itching my nipple, carry on. You all right? Yeah, an itchy nipple. It doesn't happen very often, does it?
46:02No. The nipple doesn't really become itchy. Maybe itch my head.
46:08Clair Buckley:Spooky man If there's a nipple in this story we're getting the fuck out of here We were taking pictures of the rooms to show family and nothing unusual was seen at the time but when we looked back through the photos we noticed a black fuzzy figure I'm convinced it's a ghost dog I love that I've coined this phrase Ghost dog My husband thinks it's a child but he's wrong thoughts. Now... Am I allowed to see this picture? Hold on, before you look at it, I just want to say one thing. I looked at this picture right before I started reading and I thought it was a child. I think your husband's right. That is a little boy...
46:51Clair Buckley:Let me have a look. With a jacket on... Can I have a look? Yeah. Oh, for fuck's sake. That is a child walking through the frame of the picture. But they're saying that there wasn't a child there. Yes, I know. I know that's what they're saying. See, there you go again. The proof is right. Right there and you don't believe it. Yes. No, right, listen. Sometimes, what's the saying? When you hear hoofs. When you hear clip clops or whatever, hoof beats. Right. Hoof beats? Hoof prints? Hoof? What's the point you're trying to get to? Well, think horse, not zebra. Right? It's a very well-known saying that, Claire.
47:35I'm the idiot here.
47:37Clair Buckley:Right. We all know that. Yeah. Right, they do have a five-year-old daughter. Yes, there you go. But there's no little boy in the family. Yeah, it just looks like a child. It could be a boy or a girl. Yeah, a ghost child. Now. Where's his legs? There's no legs. There is legs. They're behind the couch. Right. It could either be, Claire, that they've taken a picture of a ghost. Yep. Or it's their child walking through the picture. And they didn't realise. It's clearly a child running as well because the frame's so, the picture's blurred. Here's my thing, right? If I know Jess, would she have gone to the trouble of sending that in knowing that that was her daughter?
48:14Clair Buckley:Hey, maybe she didn't know because it's a child running. But you would know if that was your kid. No, you know what it's like. It's all dressed in black. You're just turned up on holiday, taking a few pictures of the thing, your kid's running around going, oh God, look at this, look at that. And you're going, yeah, yeah, no, it's great. Let me get a few pictures so I can do the, you're not paying attention to your kid for a split second. You get a picture of it. You look back and you go, fucking hell, Is that a ghost? I don't know, man. Jess, it's not a ghost. It's your child. It's definitely not a dog.
48:44It's not a dog, no.
48:46Clair Buckley:It's definitely not a ghost dog. I'm convinced it's a ghost dog, Jess. You're fucking, you're an idiot. No, you're not. What would you rather, here's a question for you. What would you rather have in our house? Yeah. A ghost child. Yeah. A ghost adult. Yeah. Or a ghost dog. I think Ghost Dog. Yeah. Well, good. That's what we've got. No, we don't. You don't have a ghost dog? No. Well, yeah, because that guy the other week there said it's still with me. Oh, right. I've latched on to that. Well, thanks for sending in those spooky stories. Spooky. Just very quickly, on the subject of, you know, all things ghoulish and death and all that sort of stuff.
49:33Clair Buckley:We've had a listener get in touch with a public service update, we think, off the back of the dead hamster story we shared a few weeks back. Oh, yeah. Fred's here. He says, hi, James and Claire. I was listening to your episode where a bloke thought his hamster had died, so he chucked it in the bin. Turns out it came back to life. What he doesn't know is that hamsters hibernate. People often think they're dead, then put them down the waste disposal or frisbee them away, thinking they're gone when they're only having a nap. Please tell the public to save some of the furry little twats. Muchos gracias from Fred, which I believe is French for thank you very much.
50:11Clair Buckley:So yes, if you think your hamster's dead, double check. Double check. We've probably done an actual public service announcement here. I suppose so, yeah. On hamsters? How the fuck have we ended up here? I wonder if that bloke's got a hamster ghost going around his house. Probably, and for the way he treated it, I hope it fucking scratches the wall. He thought he was dead. He didn't treat it badly. He threw it in the bin. What are you supposed to do with a hamster? Oh, put it in a wee shoebox and give it a little funeral. What, and then a fox comes and digs it up? Circle of life, babe. Right, so what is it then?
50:45Either he's too harsh or not harsh enough? Well, you know that when Paisley died, when your dog died, we went all out on... We didn't have a funeral, that sounded... But we made sure that we got...
50:59Clair Buckley:We got the dog cremated. Yeah, but we got her done by herself. And then she's got her own special little expenses. But she was about the same size as me. Yeah. If it was a mouse or a hamster or something. Oh, but it's still your pet. No, is it? Yeah. I think the only pet that's disposable is a goldfish. I think every other pet, if it's got legs, bury it. All right. That's the rule. What about a snake? It doesn't have legs. I don't care for snakes That is the rule Yeah that's the rule You don't care for snakes? I wouldn't have one in the house I thought you'd be well into that So it could crawl through your skulls and stuff Yeah no I like snakes I don't have anything against them I wouldn't have one as a pet Have you ever seen a snake shit?
51:43No
51:43Clair Buckley:I've seen a video of someone holding a snake And it just shit all over him No It's fucking gross Sometimes you forget the snake shit don't you? Yeah Here's a really weird thing Everybody our age has held a snake. I've held a snake. That's what I'm saying. Wasn't that just like a thing when we were all kids? Yeah, yeah, they came to school. At some point, everybody just held a snake. I've got a question for you. Have you got a school photo of you with an owl on your shoulder? No. I do. No. I've got... I've got... A real owl. One year, for some reason, when we were doing the school pictures, this bloke brought in...
52:19Clair Buckley:Some bloke brought in some owls. I've got like a little... No, that's really weird. I've got a snowy owl on my shoulder. when I'm having my school picture taken. I've forgotten all about that until you just mentioned it. Millennials, we've all held snakes, tarantulas. Spiders and stuff, yeah. Yeah, like that was just a thing we did. I don't feel like that happens anymore. Let me know in the comments if some bloke turned up to your school with owls for your school photo day. Oh, God. But I was gutted because they had like a big fucking fuck-off brown owl for like year five and year six, like the oldest year.
52:58Clair Buckley:I had to have the little snowy owl. Right. Owls are very, they're scary creatures. I don't like owls. They're dissociated with the fourth kind. Oh, such a good owl. Because there was that great big, when we went to Florida. That's right. It was sitting right on our door. Great big giant owl just sat outside our door of the little sort of villa hut thing. Treehouse thingy, yeah. We couldn't go past it. No. No, they're fucking, they're raptors. Yeah. Well, if you've seen the staircase. Yeah. We'll leave it there, shall we? Let us know what the weirdest animal you've ever touched. I've touched some weird snakes before.
53:36Sure.
