2:43James Buckley:Thank you.

2:43Clair Buckley:Based on the novel by Stephen King.

2:46James Buckley:I'm based on a novel by Stephen King. Yeah. get it because I'm such a little I thought you were going to say something else

2:54Clair Buckley:I think you thought you were going to say something else and you didn't have anything to say you just reached into the darkness and there was only one word there that you could grab quickly brilliant anything you'd like to get off your chesticle

3:16James Buckley:You've still blown your nose very loudly I'm still sick

3:19Clair Buckley:I'm still very very ill I did all that last week I had my moan Can I do a quick one?

3:25James Buckley:Yeah sure

3:25Clair Buckley:Quick little moan for you Claire?

3:29James Buckley:What is it?

3:31Clair Buckley:I've said I'm worried about the youth of today I have said it I have said that they're really boring and what not And I've just, it's just been the last week or so where a couple of little things have been flagged to me and I'm like, fucking hell, come on guys.

3:46James Buckley:Right, what's happened?

3:49Clair Buckley:Now, I am worried about the youth of today, Claire. They are such a bunch of little nerds. They really are. Our boys do ice skating lessons and stuff like that. Right, so we're over at the ice rink. I always see a bunch of teenagers. they're about 16, 17 right and I can tell they're the cool kids at the school they're the popular kids you know you can just get that vibe and they're just like hey guys should we go ice skating after school today? yeah okay I was just thinking I'd be like because I was a little fucking loser at school

4:28James Buckley:I wasn't the popular kid

4:30Clair Buckley:I wasn't the cool kid but if I was dropped into school now I'd be like I'm not fucking looking up to these lot What are you talking about ice skating? What's the matter with you?

4:44James Buckley:I know, yeah Nobody does what we do No Yeah

4:48Clair Buckley:They're finishing up in English And they're like Hey Brad, ice skating after school, yeah? Oh absolutely yeah I'll see you there Did a cameo the other day Right? And this isn't a one-off by the way Okay I was like Right, I've done this a few times now I'm going to have to bring this up on the podcast Yeah It was parents that wanted me to wish their daughter a happy 21st birthday. They said, she's going bingo with her friends to celebrate. I was like, bingo? Fucking 21st birthday.

5:19James Buckley:That's literally something you do

5:20Clair Buckley:when you're in your 70s.

5:21James Buckley:Yeah, I've never been to bingo.

5:23Clair Buckley:But I am worried. I feel sorry for kids because I don't know if they are, I don't know if they are just a bunch of little nerds. Yeah. Or if there is this, societal pressure that everyone seems to go through these days. The whole of society is such a bunch of little fucking grasses. Because everyone's got a camera these days and you're not allowed to sort of misbehave or whatever. But I do, and I'm worried that kids are growing up paranoid.

5:54James Buckley:They're already paranoid

5:56Clair Buckley:and worried about their behaviour. Let kids be kids. Misbehave, be an idiot, get into some stupid situations at that point in your life.

6:06James Buckley:At that point.

6:06Clair Buckley:And then learn from it and move on.

6:08James Buckley:Yeah. Yeah.

6:10Clair Buckley:It does equip you. You do go, fucking hell, that was nuts that I did that.

6:14James Buckley:But that is the problem, everything's filmed.

6:16Clair Buckley:Yeah.

Read the full transcript

6:17James Buckley:Like, all the stuff that me and my mates used to get up to.

6:20Clair Buckley:The youth are being robbed, man.

6:21James Buckley:If somebody was there with a camera, you wouldn't do anything.

6:26Clair Buckley:I tell you when they didn't...

6:27James Buckley:Because they're going to put it on the internet. Yeah, yeah. Your mum's got to finish.

6:31Clair Buckley:Yeah, yeah. I'll tell you when they didn't have cameras, Claire Ding It was during the 90s It was really, really good

6:38James Buckley:But why is going to the ice rink not having fun with your mates? That's still fine It's good, clean

6:43Clair Buckley:Good, all-American fun I don't know

6:48James Buckley:There's nothing wrong with being a good kid

6:50Clair Buckley:You've just got this little opportunity to be an idiot

6:53James Buckley:Okay

6:54Clair Buckley:And I would encourage kids to be stupid

7:00James Buckley:Okay Fine. Fine.

7:03Clair Buckley:And the irony is that you will be, I genuinely think you'll be a better person and smarter because of it. You'll make better decisions when you get older if you make all the wrong decisions now.

7:14James Buckley:You definitely do need to make mistakes young.

7:16Clair Buckley:And if you make those mistakes when you're older, then they can be costly.

7:19James Buckley:Yeah. Yeah. Costly. Costly. Is that the end of your TED Talk?

7:26Clair Buckley:Anyway, Claire. Go on. It's another day. and it's another very important celebration.

7:32James Buckley:Oh, what now?

7:32Clair Buckley:We know, you know how we love worldwide blank day. Yeah, yeah, yeah. National blank day. Well, today, and I don't need to tell you this because you already know, we all already know, don't we? Because it's in the diary. It's in our calendars, isn't it? It is National Carpe Diem Day.

7:53James Buckley:Oh.

7:55Clair Buckley:Which leans back into what I was saying about you kids.

7:58James Buckley:seize the day

7:59Clair Buckley:seize the day that's what it means in Latin do you know much Latin no

8:06James Buckley:afraid not

8:07Clair Buckley:how much Latin do I know canis canum edit

8:12James Buckley:eat it what does that mean

8:14Clair Buckley:I think it means dog eat dog it's from a video game

8:17James Buckley:okay whenever I hear carpe diem it just makes me think of Dead Poets Society never seen it

8:25Clair Buckley:is that Robin Williams yeah

8:27James Buckley:Yeah, they stand on the thing.

8:30Clair Buckley:They're the kids that I'm talking about. We've got this new cool teacher. And he's teaching us all kinds of stuff. He's expanding our minds, man. Anyway, the most important part of National Carpe Diem Day is to do just what it says. Seize the day. This means taking advantage of the moment and living in the present.

8:57James Buckley:yeah totally what i was just saying nice jimmy does it annoy you what when people ask you to live in the moment um no doesn't annoy me no it doesn't because i don't think i do live in the moment i think i'm always worried about you've never lived in the moment no i think i'm constantly worried about what's around the corner but you also just don't you're not um you're not like a moment recognizer like sometimes something will be happening like or the kids will be doing something and i'll and you'll just sort of be like not and i'm like this i can feel a moment even if it's just a little one just like a little silly thing but instagram yeah you see all these videos like sort of if i had instagram if instagram was about when our kids were babies i think i would have just being like depressed all the time right because it's just always like oh like they're not little forever and oh and this and one day you'll miss the smudges on the glass and stuff but when i see those things i quite like seeing those things i'm a bit like yeah you should take joy in the little things every little day things yeah i don't yeah i don't that whole in between this thing was wasted on me that's never i was never i think you're never gonna know what that was gonna and it's different to live in that being someday i don't think that's the same

10:28Clair Buckley:back to it now i go god wasn't that amazing that was such a great time in my life but at the time i was genuinely stressing and worried about other stuff yeah well yeah you should have enjoyed it a little bit but it's also appreciate i'm always like fucking hell do you remember when kylie we know who gave us an award and stuff like that yeah you talk about that quite a lot no but you know what i mean you do bring that up a lot but it's just one of those things that's in my brain yeah i'm like god i didn't really go at the time i wasn't like fucking hell i think you were a little bit just a bit like right no i would have genuinely like gotta get a car sorted to get back from this place in a couple of hours time it's gonna be really busy because we're all gonna to leave at the same time.

11:08James Buckley:But it's also okay to look back on stuff fondly.

11:12Clair Buckley:Yeah. But, yeah, but then it's too late then, isn't it? Yeah, but... That's what carpe diem's all about.

11:17James Buckley:Well, yeah, I guess, yeah. Yeah. I do enjoy, I genuinely do enjoy little things. Like, I would say I'm quite a simple person. Like, I just like having dinner with the kids and stuff. Yeah, I enjoy that stuff, yeah. But, yeah, I'm... I mean, I feel like seize the day makes you think makes me feel like you should do something like crazy or something big or something meaningful

11:44Clair Buckley:get a tattoo yeah just get a spur of the moment tattoo yeah like dame judy dench did the dench she got her first tattoo aged 81 right and it said carpe diem right i wondered where the

11:59James Buckley:hell that was going why you interrupted me with judy dench i love the dench oh she's em ain't she

12:04Clair Buckley:Not anymore, no, but she was good in the Bond films, of course What was that? As Time Goes By or something What was that thing? I never watched it It was a sitcom that didn't look very funny That was in the 90s But the thing is, right, you had Victor Meldrew, didn't you? I loved Victor Meldrew I felt like you didn't need two old people going

12:29James Buckley:What was it he said again?

12:30Clair Buckley:I don't believe it

12:31James Buckley:That's it, yeah

12:32Clair Buckley:How could you forget that?

12:34James Buckley:I don't know, I was just thinking about it. One foot in the grave. What was the one, the woman in, she always wore dungarees.

12:42Clair Buckley:The Good Life. The Good Life, yeah. Felicity Kendall. Yeah, don't get me started on Kendall. Wowie Wawa.

12:49James Buckley:And then the one with the really posh woman.

12:53Clair Buckley:Bouquet. Yeah, what was that called? No, not absolutely.

12:56James Buckley:With a slob brother-in-law.

12:58Clair Buckley:What was it called? Keeping Up Appearances.

13:02James Buckley:That was it, yeah, yeah. Yeah.

13:04Clair Buckley:Yeah, you couldn't move for your old people sitcoms. Sitcoms. Yeah. During the 90s.

13:11James Buckley:Yeah. Ding.

13:15James Buckley:What are we talking about?

13:16Clair Buckley:We're just talking about season of the day.

13:17James Buckley:Oh, yeah. That's our problem, Claire, is that we spend our day going,

13:23Clair Buckley:what are we talking about? What are we doing?

13:26James Buckley:In reminiscence about the 90s. We're supposed to season the day. That's not season the day. All we talk about is how good it used to be.

13:31Clair Buckley:The 90s were so good.

13:33James Buckley:I know, man. It was so brilliant.

13:35Clair Buckley:Let us know. Let us know your wacky things that you did on the spur of the moment. What have I done? I must have done some stuff on the spur of the moment. I can't think of anything. When I was younger, I was very...

13:47James Buckley:I never thought anything through. I always just did stuff. I think you get to a certain age, though, and you can't really seize the day anymore. Once you get, you know, the only thing that's seizing is your back.

14:03Clair Buckley:Alright, fucking hell Save that for the open mic night That was a buckly

14:09James Buckley:That was a buckly

14:10Clair Buckley:The only thing I'm seizing these days is my back Right guys, where are you from?

14:16James Buckley:Look at how annoyed he gets when I say something funny Where are you from?

14:18Clair Buckley:What do you do for a living?

14:20James Buckley:Can't handle it can you?

14:21Clair Buckley:Should we swipe?

14:25James Buckley:This episode is brought to you by the DVLA Now James, it's fair to say that I look after, the life admin, right? You don't really know what's going on there. Claire. Birthdays.

14:39Clair Buckley:Claire. I can't really argue with you.

14:42James Buckley:No, no. You don't, you know, the kids will open a present from mum and dad on their birthday. You're more excited than them because it's the first time you've seen it.

14:49Clair Buckley:I can't believe my luck.

14:50James Buckley:You don't know when your cousin's birthday's coming up. All that stuff's taken care of, right?

14:55Clair Buckley:Seems to be.

14:56James Buckley:It does, it does.

14:58Clair Buckley:It all just sort of gets done.

14:59James Buckley:Well, I'm going to pay you a compliment. I don't know when stuff like the car tax needs to be renewed.

15:04Clair Buckley:You don't, do you?

15:05James Buckley:No, I don't.

15:06Clair Buckley:When is the car tax renewed?

15:07James Buckley:I have no idea, James. No idea.

17:03James Buckley:Yeah, you've had that a lot. In Luca Modric.

17:05Clair Buckley:It happened, yeah, I'm not as pleased with that one. In Paddy the Baddy. That's just the haircut. Which, right.

17:14James Buckley:A lot of people do, people think you, people look like you. I get that a lot. You always, I've never had him to say I look like somebody.

17:22Clair Buckley:Well, you do look like a young Rose West, don't you?

17:25James Buckley:Oh yeah, that was right, yeah.

17:27Clair Buckley:Really look like her.

17:28James Buckley:And that one picture.

17:30Clair Buckley:I know, but it is like uncanny. Look up, just Google young Rose West picture. And there's a picture, I think. They're on a couch, I think. Or is she sitting on his knee or something?

17:41James Buckley:No, maybe. I don't think it does that much. I think it looks like my mum.

17:47Clair Buckley:It looks really like it.

17:51James Buckley:Anyway, carry on. Is that all I've got?

17:53Clair Buckley:Paddy the baddie. So there was a little while because Paddy cut his fringe. But he's abandoned that now.

18:00James Buckley:Oh, has he? Yeah. Has he left the J haircut?

18:02Clair Buckley:Yeah, he's let it sort of grow out. And listen, this haircut's not for the week.

18:07James Buckley:He doesn't have the stamina like you did. It's not for the week.

18:10Clair Buckley:No. And he probably was. He probably was getting fed up. people think he looks like he's like post-owner like fucking J from the Inbetweeners he's got good at fighting and stuff like that and maybe yeah he did get a bit fed up with it but

18:22James Buckley:have you ever spoke to him? no

18:23Clair Buckley:no no

18:55James Buckley:Yeah, yeah

18:56Clair Buckley:Because you'd have to get a proper trainer and dietician Yeah

20:11Clair Buckley:Well, I had poo bags before we even had a dog, just in case. There's a ring doorbell clip of me going out, going, I'm really sorry, I've just taken a shit on your...

20:20James Buckley:But don't worry, I've got poo bags.

20:22Clair Buckley:But don't you worry, I've got poo bags with me. What's your view on people hiring lookalikes?

20:28James Buckley:Don't get it.

20:29Clair Buckley:For like a party or something like that. I just don't think they do lookalike. I don't get it. I've never seen a lookalike where I go, unless it's fucking Iron Man or something like that, where it's just someone in a suit.

20:43James Buckley:Yeah.

20:44Clair Buckley:I never see a lookalike and go, that is the spitting image. Yeah. Like, if I was walking past that person, I'd go, fucking hell.

20:50James Buckley:Not to go back to the 90s, but I feel like that was a huge thing in, like, the 2000s and stuff. There was, like, websites. Wasn't there a program? I'm sure there was, like, a Channel 4 program or something about lookalikes.

21:03Clair Buckley:But there are still websites. You join an agency, a lookalike agency.

21:07James Buckley:I know, but there was all the big ones. There was David Brent.

21:10Clair Buckley:Well, there is that David Brent guy that's blowing up all over social media. To be fair, I don't think he looks like him.

21:17James Buckley:He's good at doing the impression.

21:19Clair Buckley:I think it's a really good Brent impression.

21:22James Buckley:There's always David Beckham.

21:23Clair Buckley:But he's done really well. Sorry to just interrupt you. That David Brent lookalike, he's sort of transcended the lookalike thing. he's sort of now got a bit of fame in his own right for being a David Brent impressionist yeah and I think it's so full circle and people book him like to turn up to an event or a birthday party or something like that yeah and I don't think they go oh you got a David Brent look-alike I think they go oh you got that David Brent look-alike to turn up he's brilliant I love these videos yeah so it's sort of like this weird inception yeah sort of like this this david brent look-alike character has now got a life of its own well yeah away from david brent but there was

22:11James Buckley:the famous there was like a david and victoria beckham one that was really i remember they

22:16Clair Buckley:brought a look-alike out of me when i was on soccer am years ago did they yeah they brought a look-alike, they were like, we've got a J from the Inbetweeners look-alike, just an ugly bloke with a shit haircut. And I was like, right, I get it. I get where I can see where you're coming from. In fact, they said I was bleeped or something on live television.

22:40James Buckley:Yeah, you did swear to something. Was that what that was?

22:43Clair Buckley:Yeah, because they brought him out and I just forgot where I was for a second and just went, oh, for fuck's sake.

22:51James Buckley:they had to like blur my

22:52Clair Buckley:because it was so clear what I'd said they had to like blur my on the replay of it they had to blur my mouth

22:58James Buckley:right did you have to apologise?

23:01Clair Buckley:I don't even I think I said it in a way that it just went so under the radar right

23:08James Buckley:right fine

23:09Clair Buckley:it was just such a natural reaction yeah that nobody nobody went oh sorry about that by the way like no it was just like

23:16James Buckley:right

23:16Clair Buckley:oh for fuck's sake

23:19James Buckley:you do get that a lot though

23:20Clair Buckley:everyone has a mate that looks like me

23:23James Buckley:yeah

23:24Clair Buckley:I met a Jay Cartwright the other day

23:27James Buckley:you did? in Nottingham? young lad

23:30Clair Buckley:came up to me and he went I'm named after you I went what?

23:35James Buckley:I said that I was like that can't be true I was like what?

23:38Clair Buckley:the thing is he was a young lad he was a teenager

23:40James Buckley:so he was probably a baby

23:43Clair Buckley:when the in betweeners had come out probably being born when the Inbetweeners had come out. I mean, the Inbetweeners is 20 years ago next year that we started making that. Wow. And he was definitely younger than...

23:54James Buckley:Oh, he was, yeah.

23:56Clair Buckley:And he definitely looked the age of when the Inbetweeners became big.

24:00James Buckley:Yeah.

24:00Clair Buckley:And his last name was Cartwright. He was like, yeah, my parents called me Jay. And I went, I don't believe you. I don't believe that's true. I really don't. And he went, I've got my ID. He said, I've got my ID if you want to see it. He's your ID. I went, I do want to see it. He showed me his ID. It was J. Carlyer.

24:19James Buckley:Wow. Yeah, that's crazy, isn't it? I remember. And then also, people also dress up as the Inbetweeners for Halloween a lot.

24:26Clair Buckley:Oh, yeah, it's a good...

24:27James Buckley:Do you not find that so odd?

24:30Clair Buckley:I think it's a good...

24:31James Buckley:Like when you actually see it, because you know people watch the Inbetweeners and people love it and stuff, but when you actually see people...

24:37Clair Buckley:I think it's a good costume because it's... It's a good one for... It's low effort and good response. Yeah, yeah. Because it is just a school uniform. But if you put on a blue school jumper... Yeah. And then everyone's like, oh, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. There was some... I remember I was on This Morning years ago. And I was so tempted. I didn't do it for... I don't know why I didn't do it. I wish I had have done. On the segment before I came on, they had a Posh and Bex lookalike couple.

25:10James Buckley:Right.

25:10Clair Buckley:And the segment was...

25:11James Buckley:I bet it's the ones I was talking about.

25:12Clair Buckley:The segment was like, we get, we get, like, it was almost like, we find it hard to live our lives. Our lives are so difficult, yeah. People just think we're David Beckham, David and Victoria Beckham. Right, yeah. They looked fuck all like them. Yeah. I remember, because you know when you're on This Morning or like Lorraine and stuff like that, you're in a room and you can see the TV. They've got the TV show being played. so I was watching them and I was like everyone is at home right now going they do not look like they don't look like the Beckhams I don't know what you want to say and it was whoever it was that was presenting at the time and they were going yeah I can you really do and is it a problem for you is it like you know it's like yeah when we're trying to do our shopping and what not we get mobbed and they'll be like oh James welcome to the show I wanted to go before we start I just bumped into David and Victoria Beckham while I was out there like I was so I didn't ask him for a picture or anything I was so starstruck I couldn't believe it was them I just didn't bother doing it anyway I was so tempted because I knew everyone was watching this going they don't look like yeah he's got the same haircut and he's got an earring in

26:20James Buckley:yeah you should have that would have been so funny look at this

26:25Clair Buckley:there's Jay fancy dress set available on Amazon there you go short messy blonde wig blue and beige striped tie perfect for British icon Wow
