0:54The ghost saw the comments. He heard the people critiquing. He wasn't going down like that. Man, y 'all know what it is. I'm D Jones. I got my main man, the Ghost with me. We got Richie Valdez and Ants One behind the scenes. It's a cool team. Damn right this is a Vans podcast, baby. Ghost, what an absolutely special, special week we have here at the Bunt. An unreal guest in the building and some unreal timing on ours and his behalf. Tell us what's popping this week.
1:30Davis Torgerson:Bro, massive interview. We got a Canadian icon in the building, mixing it up a little bit, but a great interview nonetheless, whether you snowboard or not. Skaters, you know what I'm saying? Be accepting. Tune in. We had a great conversation with a triple OG legend. I think one of the most decorated Canadian Olympians of all time, and he's at the Olympics now, none other than mark mcmorris uh straight out the prairies man what a g uh wishing you nothing i this is a couple days before he's about to compete so fingers crossed for you mark do your thing glad the concussion didn't knock you out completely out of the playoffs that was meant to be a pun um but yeah awesome interview awesome dude and um yeah tune in listen it's it's it's all gravy skaters and then we take it y 'all straight to the post office uh y 'all listened it was flooded with emails so thank you we back and then of course wrapping it up with the rundown we had a boring ass super bowl but you know we had to break it down a little nba trade deadline and psl week one in the books uh a fun week in the in the sports world slash psl world man absolutely epic week i'm just gonna clean something up for you three-time olympic bronze medalist great resume but the one you were looking for is the most decorated athlete of all time in winter x games that's the oh that's the point we were trying to hit there 11 gold medals in slope style so let's just put some respect on the closer mark mcmorris in the building and we are absolutely thrilled to have him so make sure to follow us on instagram at the bunt live subscribe to us on youtube youtube.com slash at the bunt live hit us up on our patreon patreon.com slash the bunt and then head over to debuntlive.com ghost it's the ghost shout out of the week what you got for us man you know what time it is y 'all you know i'm saying shout out of the week and skateboarding has always been shaped by the videos that represent it it's how a lot of us connect to skating in the first place lately videos are treated as disposable content algorithms decide what gets seen and full lengths are reduced to a couple of clips in a feed.
4:08Davis Torgerson:That's not how skate videos are meant to be experienced. That's why the Den was built. The Den is a skate video app curated and designed by skaters. It has a deep catalog of videos preserved in their original quality, pure vision, pure sound, exactly the way filmers intended them to be seen. From the classics to the latest releases and a 24-hour live channel for when you just want to kick back and zone out. The den was made so when something special comes along, it stays front and center long after the feeds moved on. So if you care about skate videos like we do, become a member and download the den for free on iPhone, Android, the web, Apple TV, and Amazon Fire TV.
4:52Davis Torgerson:All right, I'm cleaning out the last of my off-season shoutouts, the folder. I've been erasing them as I shout them out and then we'll be up to current times. You dig? All right. So before I get to the official show of the week, Daniel Lutheran pound of flesh, put out a full part of bangers. If you've been wondering what he's up to, he's still shredding. You dig? Then we got Le Rond by Hadrian Buhanic, a French video. I think it was like an Adidas Europe, mostly. Ting, absolutely amazing uh we had men like leo chalet uh chalet tt uh vincent malu miles haytor just amazing skating start to finish and dante hill you know i'm saying he's still getting down yo he's so massive like he's just a huge human it's so crazy to see what he can Yeah, just he looks crazy like on a board not in a bad way.
5:55Davis Torgerson:It's just like impressive It's front heel nose grinding tables. You know I'm saying skating shirtless him and Antoine Dixon More than then what is that here? I was about you didn't let me finish my sentence for some reason They'd be skating shirtless more than with shirts on which that's just terrifying to me I'm not trying to cut my shit up and then we also had do another french video out of montreal this one though by ben nashance tune into that one some epic skating some epic spots and uh we'll wrap it up with uh after hours vid by jasper steinback um so if you hadn't been paying attention go watch all of that And then the official shout out of the week, our boy from fucking down under, Raph Langslow, turned pro for HODL.
6:52Davis Torgerson:This is a little while ago now, so delayed congrats. And HODL gang, y 'all better pull up to Toronto this summer for the Bunt Jam. You know what I'm saying? Because we back. That's not an official announcement, but just, you know what I'm saying, get them flights ready, you dig? And Raph, keep doing your thing. You know, there's details that need to be added. but something brewing, dude. And HODL, they got to come correct, you know. They won their little, whatever you want to call it, tournament in Melbourne, you know. But now they headed to the big leagues, you know. They headed to the big leagues now.
7:29All right.
7:33Man, that's about it. There's not much to go over, you know. The post office is packed. The rundown is packed. It's Olympic season. people are feeling that that pride and uh i couldn't be happier to have mark mcmorris legendary canadian in the building and uh just a legend all in all so let's get into the interview
7:54Davis Torgerson:ghost yeah shout out uh red bull too because uh mark mcmorris you know i'm saying we live in that lifestyle these days but yo donald i know you felt this just quick explanation of when i was in Mexico City last week and I hit my vans I my mom and sister were in the room probably sitting like seven feet away from me and you know how when we start you start and I'm just sitting there quietly my mom was turning 61 or 261 I didn't want to give my mom a heart attack just exploding a vans out of nowhere just sitting quietly so it was a little you know what I'm saying but yeah Anyways. A little hesitant off the jump.
8:36Had to ease into it. We back, baby. Yeah. Yeah, you hit that one. That's good. I'm happy. I'm happy we back with the energy levels, but that shit cracked me up, man. And leave it to Ants1 to throw that in the group chat to make sure we all saw it. Respect for that Ants1. Keep him on his toes. All right, Sparky. Let's get this interview popping.
9:05All right, man. Super excited today. We have Canadian royalty, Mark McMorris in the building, man. What's cracking? Not much. Chilling. Thanks for having me. Hell yeah, dude. Hyped. Hyped to get you on. I've been friends for a little while now and talked about it and the day has finally come. Big fan of what you guys do and your position as being in Canada and just covering skateboarding on all aspects. So happy to be on mark it don't change for you man we start every show off the same you got to hit us with your favorite skate and we'll call it snowboard and sports moment you can choose i'd prefer a favorite skate moment if you got one though any rick mccrank slam city jam footage i always love seeing those clips resurface i i think he's somewhat of our goat and especially on the west we we love crank and he's uh he's just such a nice guy and does it for the right reason so i love that um most recently that tom schar footage dj's switch frontside 180 down that huge set just yeah i'm always i'm always a sucker for the canadians killing it on the international stage and there's a lot of them in the skate scene so and favorite sports moment in general it's hard not to go with the Crosby goal at the 2010 Olympics.
10:33Dude, were you there? I was not, no. But I was watching it from Saskatchewan, and that was one of the more patriotic moments I've had, I think. Dude, that was incredible. Hopefully we get it again, man. Crosby's still there, captain the team. Dude, it's unreal. He's stood the test of time. He's a big inspiration for me. I can't believe he still plays at the level he does. That's huge.
11:00Davis Torgerson:So Mark, man, take us back to the beginning. Where'd you grow up and how'd you get into snowboarding? Yeah, I grew up in Regina, Saskatchewan. So prairie kid, a couple older kids that grew up on my cul-de-sac or block had a skate ramp, were really big into skating. So I got on a board really young, five years old. I was lucky enough that winter, my mom took us out to Banff and we were about to go in ski lessons. And I was like, oh shit, you can skateboard on the snow. Can I go in a lesson for that? and then my brother and I yeah we started snowboarding on the same day and really enjoyed it and kind of did both for for many many moons and obviously our winters are pretty harsh here and I think something pivotal that happened as well as our indoor skate park closed so it was just more time outside snowboarding but a huge love for both and I had a lot of support from our local shop at the time for skateboarding and snowboarding and still holding closely to my heart for both sports.
12:12That's wicked. Was there ever, aside from the skate park, a point where you were like, man, I maybe should focus a little bit more on snowboarding? I got sponsored by the shop for skating, but I was snowboarding a lot. And my brother was definitely more into snowboarding than skating so we had that kind of back and forth you know like he would learn something I needed to learn it and vice versa so I had that kind of like competition and battle with him that definitely helped us progress a lot when I was like 13 I was receiving a bit more support to snowboard and I was really truly enjoying it and loving every aspect of it and yeah I think I never ever stopped skating.
12:59I was just, I started to see a bit more success in snowboarding and I was really enjoying it and receiving support. That makes sense. So what would you consider your first big break in the industry? Like, what was the point where you're like, now we're on? having like a company come on and support me and give me like a travel budget get me around to these contests and you know you're getting free gear and you're kind of like oh yeah it's awesome and then I I was able to spend some time around someone that was kind of like in it already and started going to these kind of like pro level events and you're just like holy shit I'm in this I'm in the start gate or kind of just like in the check in for the event with heroes.
13:49And then you eventually got to like kind of be like, hey, I'm meant to be here. I'm snowboarding. But yeah, first big break was definitely winning a pro level event and and kind of having my family there. And then my mom was pretty darn supportive of it. Like she was definitely adamant about school. So the amount of school I was missing, she was a little bit bummed on that. But when she saw it all kind of pay off and I'll never forget, we were in Calgary. I won an event. And at that time, this was in 2010, they paid in cash. And I think, yeah, I think they gave me like 12 grand in cash right there.
14:30And I took them to the Flames game that night. And we just had, it was just such a cool like moment for my family. And I was a really motivated kid. I was super passionate about it. And I was going to make it happen no matter what. So how old were you when you won that? 2010. I would have just turned 16. Damn. That's a nice payday for a 16-year-old. It was. I mean, for any age, to be honest, about 16 is incredible. The magnitude of that at that time in my brain was just like, holy shit. Like, I'm just, I'm on and I'm going to keep going. And I had a few more like big breaks that season. And then you just kind of like, then the ball starts rolling.
15:14You start getting invited to bigger events. And in the coming years, I think it would have been like the fall of 2010. That's when I got with my agent Ninja, who's represented me for many moons. 15 years, like I signed with Burton, Oakley and Red Bull in the fall of 2010. And so it's celebrating a long time with those brands. And I'm thankful to have those partners for that long and, and to have that support for that many years and like tell a story and not be jumping ship. It's just been like the dream career. And I feel lucky that it's still going. That's awesome, man.
15:54Davis Torgerson:Can you tell us about your first coach, Russell Davies and what he was like, and maybe give us a story about the guy if you got one. You know, snowboarding became an Olympic sport in 98. So there was provincial and federal funding. So he was quote unquote coach, but he was chaperone, cool, older friend, homie. Definitely not like, you know, because at the end of the day, it's like, yeah, you're in this like provincial funding, but you're just snowboarding. And he was a snowboarder through and through, not like a coach vibe at all. So he was so instrumental just on like helping us grow up and he would drive us out to the mountains pretty much like every second weekend.
16:42And he was just like the cool older brother. And we were just like park rats wanted to be on the jibs, wanted to be in the park. And he would like make us ride the mountain. You know, we're from the prairies. You can ride rails or do whatever in your own time. Let's like learn how to ride our boards and go fast and, and retrain and be in the mountains and take advantage of that. And yeah, still a good friend to this day and big shouts, Russell Davies. So no whistle and clipboard type of coach, just mostly the homie. No, the farthest thing from that. And I've seen like that, that side of it, but Russ Davies was the complete opposite.
17:25And I think he's still helping kids from the prairies snowboard and get into events and creating those opportunities. And I think his program is very similar, still loose and fast. So was it crazy to see snowboard get introduced into the Olympics and now skating? Are there similarities or differences? You think it's more competitive one than the other? What are your thoughts on that? I think when any sport becomes an Olympic sport, there's definitely like a lot more interest in the sense that national organizations and then the training can become a bit more like slopestyle became an Olympic sport in 2014.
18:09And I saw that firsthand, like I was competing in the X Games and do tours and all this stuff before it got to the Olympics. And it really helped me that I did well at an Olympics for sure. I can't say it didn't. It helped with recognition. It helped with corporate partnerships. I can't say that it hurt me in any sense of the word. Like it was instrumental for my career. I was 20 years old. It was the first event of the that Olympics. I got a medal for Canada. It was really, really something. It was really cool, really neat experience. And then I went again in 18. But yeah, in 2020, when skateboarding was getting introduced to the Olympics, I was definitely excited.
18:55I was excited for my friends that had an opportunity to go. I was really interested to see how it would be accepted. And honestly, I thought it went over pretty well. I remember watching it pretty thoroughly and the skating was at an all time high. And I really enjoyed watching the park. I think that event is just insane how hard those guys skate. And I lost some money on Pedro Barr. I was sure he was going to win. And I also bet on Naja and Raisa to win. And none of them won. But that's the fucking Olympics. Like, whoever you think is going to win doesn't win. And no, it's a crazy thing. It comes once every four years.
19:42there's so much weight put on it and it's so stressful. And I've been so lucky that I've been able to like ride well when it's that time. But at the end of the day, it's just an event and it goes by and it's a part of our sport, but we don't need that to have a sport that you can make a living off of. And I think that's, what's really cool about skateboarding and snowboarding.
20:06Davis Torgerson:For sure. Was there, there's definitely some pushback on the skate side, but that was more recent, but I mean, I was still pretty young when I didn't even remember that it was 98, that snowboarding got introduced. Was there a similar type of pushback at the time? Do you remember? Very much so. Like the Terry Hawkinson, who was kind of the goat at that point, boycotted the Olympics because it was ran by the IOC and, and that can be tough. There's, there's always going to be pushback for sure. And there still is like, there's lots of snowboarders that think it's whack and whatever, but there, there's so many different sides to the sport.
20:46And I think everyone can have a place in, in it. And yeah, I mean, it's really to each their own. People are going to hate on anything and everything. And, um, but yeah, I, I was definitely, when I, when I heard skateboarding is going to be in, I'm like, Oh fuck. It's probably like 50 % of the people are so bummed, but at the end of the day it comes on and everyone's going to watch and it's going to be incredible skateboarding. And I mean, it was cool to see you to go back to back like that, that kind of skateboarding was incredible. And, um, at the end of the day, it is really fun to watch.
21:31Davis Torgerson:Yeah, I never understand when people like really use their own time and energy to hate on something like that. Because if you're not into it, no one's forcing you. No one's putting a gun to your head to watch it. And you could just go skate or snowboard, like go skate some street, go hit a hill and snowboard. And just totally wise. I don't know. It just never made sense to me. I enjoy it. But if I didn't, it's so easy to just tune it out and just go skate and forget about it. that's that's the way to think about it and that's the way to if if someone's hating on it to me that's just like kind of what i tell them you know it's just like dude there's so many other sides to skateboarding to watch you do no one's telling you to tune in keep it core and raw and that's it man no olympics no x games not enough but that's how people are You can't convince them, man.
22:28You just want people to think with, you know, common sense and doesn't happen. You're the most decorated athlete at slope style and snowboard big air. Which out of all of the medals you've won do you look back at as your biggest accomplishment or most memorable win? Like, is there one award that you'll look back on and be like, this is the one I'm most proud of? one of those x games wins and it's in 2019 definitely like i hold pretty high i ended up taking out some hardware um two screws from the bottom of my femur from an operation i had in 16 i took it out on my birthday which is december 9th but of 2018 it was giving me a ton of grief took it out kind of did an intense like month and a half of rehab snowboarded for like three days went to the x games kind of blew it and then on my very last run like switched up my whole run and landed and ended up winning the contest and that that was like such a special one to me as far as like a win goes that was definitely up there the 2019 x games for sure that's fucking That sounds incredible.
23:46But I also like got really hurt before the 2018 Olympics and pretty much spent like eight months rehabbing and was able to go and was pretty much lucky to be alive after the accident that I had. And the fact that I was able to go to the games and land a run. And when you're kind of like so down before and then something happens like that, like the contrast, the highs and the lows make make things special for sure. That's epic.
24:19Davis Torgerson:Congrats on both of those. I wish I was watching live at the time. Yeah, you can tune in this year, buddy. Yeah, we got you got one more chance. I will now. Watch party at Donald. about it man i used to i started snowboarding before i started skating so i got a lot of love for snowboarding but we did the opposite like i started just getting more and more addicted to the skating and then it's it's harder to snowboard here in the winter and we have so i just but the love the love has always been there i used to watch the olympics when i was a kid and stuff how did you get the nickname the closer i don't know if that's a nickname i think I think my brother and his counterpart on the broadcast, just because, I don't know, I feel like a few times I've, on the last run, made something happen and won a contest, and then Craig just started calling me that.
25:17But I don't know if that's a nickname. It's something silly, that's for sure. I've had it like, hey, this is your last chance. It did not work out many times. but it has a lot of times worked out. And I think that's why they were like, Oh, he's the closer. Is it crazy to have your brother, someone you grew up with snowboarding your whole career now be announcing like all of these contests. Like he does the X games and the Olympics, right? Yeah. He does the X games. He does the Olympics. He used to do the U S open when that he's like the voice of snowboarding almost now. Yeah. So that's why you get the nickname, the closer it's fucking epic.
25:58It's your brother. He's great at his job and he loves it. He's unreal, man. I think he's really talented at what he does. And it's so fun that we were both able to find a career in snowboarding, go our different directions, but kind of end up there together and, and get to share some, some of the same sponsors like Craig's on Red Bull and Oakley. So we get to do things together, go on film trips. Yeah. it's just been it's dreamy it's cool that we found our own lanes and and have made it work safe it's kind of like malto taking over street league now he's gonna do psl maybe one day he'll do the olympics like it's the perfect guy in the booth to represent the sport totally he's been there he's had success he's really well respected i think i think it's perfect did did your brother
26:50Davis Torgerson:do some of the Canadian skating as well? He did. Yeah, he did. You're right. In 2000. I remember the name just rang a bell right there. Was it the first one maybe? Or did he do both? Definitely did Tokyo in 2020. I think he did do Paris too. Trying to think who he did it with. But Craig's like a huge skateboard fan. Watches everything. And he's such a fan that I think it's awesome because he studies the sports so closely. And he, even though he can't like necessarily skate at that level, but he definitely can call the tricks and get everyone excited. And yeah, it's, it's pretty cool. He, he just got forever for like 30 years.
27:35It's been Scott Russell. Like the, whenever there's an Olympics, he's like the main guy. So like, it like throws back to his show every night. Um, and he's, he retired and Craig's now like the Scott Russell. so yeah like he'll do color commentating for snowboarding but also like any olympic coverage you watch on cbc like grace like the guy so dude he he's made it incredible he made it wow that's a huge job he gets like the after show and everything now yeah he just oh man that's awesome
28:09Davis Torgerson:he loves it i wonder if it was your brother i remember it's awesome or donald russell did a fake E-Trey switch front board and I was like god damn and then the person announcing was like I think that was a switch front feeble I was like are you crazy but uh no I wouldn't have been no he knows well enough not but that's brutal man maybe he didn't do 2024 no I mean but I mean fake E-Trey switch front feeble he didn't just think oh you know what I mean like he might yeah Whether it was him or the other person. Maybe if he called the fakie, if he called the fakie Trey, maybe it was Craig because he was like, oh, was it overturned?

28:51Oh, man, that's funny. Back to nicknames for a sec. How'd you get the nickname Sparky? When we asked my parents, they've called me that forever. And I think it's mainly like growing up, playing sports, hockey, all the other parents called me Sparky because I was just had a lot of lust for life. Happy to be there. Just the spark having fun. Um, yeah. So it comes from sports and other parents and then my parents. And I think when my parents started like coming to events to watch us and my peers heard them always calling me sparky they're just like what and then yeah then obviously they would start calling me that and yeah i'd say that's like my nickname definitely the closer the closer from now on yeah that's what you sicker the closer what up sparky so much pressure he's like og nickname and a lot of a lot of people call me that and yeah if you know me well you know me by sparky uh did you ever watch the show keys to the vip
30:03Davis Torgerson:keys to the vip you ever watch that show oh it was like a art of charm like pickup show thing that was filmed like in the toronto club district back in the day but i feel like that would have been your nickname if you if you had to do a profile back then the intro it was always like so kooky but the closer that show was insane dude it's my boy the closer basically like guys up and sent them into the club to pick up girls and they would like compete against each other it's insane that that was on tv back in the day i would never fly it's all on youtube man yeah i'll have to toss that on
30:45no one wanted to touch it some even started to cry when they saw it still someone had to do it and that someone was going to be you it had turned up a few days earlier and had just been lying there with people passing by without a word apart from an oh god right before they covered both their eyes and mouth the rumor had it that the receptionist had been so disgusted and shocked when it appeared that she broke down, soiled herself, and ran out, never to return. You assumed it was true because you hadn't seen her since. For fuck's sakes, why did you have to do this? First, you had better things to do.
31:26Second, it was truly disturbing. You postponed it for as long as you could, but it was inevitable that you now had to deal with it. As you got closer, you could hear your co-workers running in the other direction. locking the doors behind them. It was just you now. You did what you had to do. You picked it up. It felt familiar, but still so wrong. You ran for the door, kicked it open like Bruce Lee on steroids and slammed it into the nearest bin. You pulled out the bottle of gasoline you had in your backpack and emptied it all. It was now as soaked as the rock and coconut oil in the last full-length baywatch film you busted out your lighter and set that fucking thing on fire now no one would ever have to ride that surf skate again who gave you the strength to take care of business who made sure no ginger backpacker with dreads and a hacky sack would cruise by you or any other skater for that matter throwing up the shaka and say hey fam ever again you know who did chpo brand the worldwide leader in sunglasses and watches and always doing it for the people
32:46so you talked about it a little bit before the injury leading up to the 2018 olympics but this is a skate podcast so not many people might know the history yeah you gotta take us behind the scenes a little bit on that you know insane situation that took place in the back country of Whistler that horrific crash that nearly ended your life potentially just yeah just kind of lay it out there for the people March of 2017 kind of the first day filming in the backcountry I was out with my brother and a couple filmers and it was just like a pretty simple little step down through these field goal trees the takeoff was soft and i was just gonna do like a front three as soon as i like put my heel edge in it really sunk and then threw me off so i was not making the field goal and i kind of just did a front three and just bam like came around finished to 360 and then just boom like tree into my body all my left side really really bad broke my jaw broke my humerus all the ribs on my left side bunch of vertebraes in my back my pelvis like ruptured spleen collapsed lung like really touch and go um luckily my brother is warrior had his sat phone, like got the heli on route, stabilized me, did everything they could.
34:23But like when you have a ruptured spleen, you really only have like 90 minutes. So it was really sketchy. I just remember like battling, really trying hard to stay awake and conscious and, and them talking to me, talking to me and then I'll just never forget like I heard the blades like I could hear the heli and then I was just like it all just I think I just passed out or went to sleep or and then then yeah I was in an induced coma for a while and they it was a construction project to put me back together and it's just like the biggest blessing to have the crew I did that day and they handled it like true pros and the fact that I was able to have those injuries I had to be able to recover to a point where I could perform as a high level athlete again is just insane.
35:25I feel extremely grateful for that because, you know, one wrong thing, you know, I could have just like been okay, but also not be able to do what I do for a living anymore. And I just feel really lucky that I was able to get out of that situation all good. And then to be able to do what I do at the level I do it at again was definitely the biggest blessing having my family there when I woke up, Craig, everyone just, yeah, I felt a lot of support. It was definitely really scary too. And you're just like, what the fuck am I doing this for? You know, and as you start to heal physically, like through my experience, I realize you heal mentally too, because you're obviously really scared to do anything snowboard related again after something traumatic like that happens.
36:22But yeah, I had a great team and that's where like Red Bull has been so instrumental. They protect their investment. They treat you like a pro sports athlete. You get hurt. They're going to give you every tool, if it's mental, if it's physical, whatever tool you need to get back to feeling confident and proud again. And there's no pressure from them to go back and try and go to the Olympics or whatever, but they're there to support that. And two years back to back, I broke my femur in 2016. They got me an apartment in Vancouver, state of the art rehab facility. The next spring, this happens. And then right back into the same apartment, another seven months of rehab.
37:05So it was just, yeah, those two years were pretty tough, but thankful to be on the other side of that. And it taught me a lot about myself, for sure. Dude, now that was a very quick version of this. I think, was it CBC made a documentary on the crash and the rehab and all that? It's on Red Bull TV. It's called Unbroken. One of my day one homies actually made it, Adam Burwell. He, incredible filmmaker, and he does a lot of my stuff. He's been with me since the get, and I thought he did a great job of telling that story. And you're right, I did skim over it. And if you, because it's kind of - You got to watch this.
37:49It's incredible. Yeah, it's kind of a tricky one to talk about. But if you want it more in detail, watch Unbroken. Wow. Do you think that the fact that the Olympic Games coming up a year later kind of helped you have something to push forward to and have a goal to work forward to? I reckon so. I think setting goals and having this overlying thing is important for sure. having things to work towards has been huge for me. And yeah, I think the fact that that year I was lucky, I was pre-qualified from the results that winter leading. So I like did all these contests, did well, got my spot at the Olympics.
38:32I'm like, fuck yeah, it's time to film. And that was the first day filming. So that was really tough, but I was lucky that I could focus on my rehab and get back to shredding a bit before the Olympics, because if I had to do all those contests leading into the Olympics, I probably wouldn't have been able to go. So I was told like, hey, you can make a full recovery from these because dude, I was like, I was like dead dude. It was bad. It ended up as good as it could have. But I feel bad for my parents that I scared them that much. And for my brother to be like on site for that, that was brutal.
39:13Trying to be smart. And that comes into the play when you're filming a lot, when you're in the back country, you're pretty remote. So there's a lot of factors that go into it. So just trying to be smart about it is huge. And it was a big lesson learned. Dude, that's crazy.
39:31Davis Torgerson:I feel like I've gone through a similar thing with trying to assess whether it's worth it the more ptsd and like mental shit builds up over the years the more you want to protect yourself like i actually stopped snowboarding because i don't want to get concussions unless i'm skateboarding like it just doesn't feel worth it anymore to like do certain other things but i have a question because the one thing that still burns me regularly is i still want to like i'll try and i'll get a clip and then i'll try and redo it because I wanted a little bit cleaner. And then I'll, I've gotten hurt doing that so many times where it's like, I should just stop or come back another day and do it again.
40:10Davis Torgerson:But I just like the amount of times I've done that. And then the regret is through the roof, but it's the one thing I can't get my brain to like, just chill on. Yeah. And I think that's a skaters or snowboarders mentality is like, once you get in to like a, my war situation, you just will not stop until you're like physically forced to stop it's hard even as you grow older and grow smarter and grow wiser to to learn that lesson because that's just like ingrained in our sports and how we think and we just want that clip exactly how we see it but yeah learning to walk away is tough and i feel like that's a forever battle yeah okay we're i'm glad i'm not alone you're not alone we've both gotten smarter in some ways but that you're never gonna stop doing that anyways yeah that one's impossible um so obviously man you're more than just a snowboarder you're like like i said a canadian icon a true celebrity i experienced it when we hung out and went to the leaf game together like you got everyone wanted to take photos with you kids grandparents parents, aunts, uncles, everyone wants, you know, a photo with you.
41:25Can you give us a story or two where this like rock style or rock star lifestyle has taken you? Like just being a celebrity that you are? Like in certain places you can kind of expect it, but like sometimes when it happens like super far away or in a random place that you would never expect like someone to know what's up and that happens, that can be like, holy shit, that's cool. Or like when people let you know, like, hey, that doc helped me through this injury. I find that really fulfilling. And honestly, like a lot of people are like, oh, do you hate it? But so much of the time, people have something positive to say.
42:07I started snowboarding because of you. Like, I'll hear that a lot. And that's pretty cool. That's at the end of the day, I'm just trying to get kids moving and off the phone and hanging outside with their friends. That's that's how we all fell in love with the sports we like. And and that's what I'm trying to do and trying to just be like a positive role model.
42:30Davis Torgerson:I haven't been on the hills in forever. Are kids just on their phones on like the chair lifts and shit these days as it infiltrated the hills? Because I guess you got to film each other, right? I think this is kind of funny and the level it's gotten to just like with coaches and iPads and all this shit like up at the hill. Like you'll like ride a chairlift with another country's athlete and like he's like looking at his run like he already has it from the coach. It's next level. But I think the phones are sick too, because like, I don't mind the phone if you're like clipping your friends and doing that because we're not on TV every night, you know?
43:15So I think it's a great way for skaters to get noticed and snowboarders to get noticed. And, and these brands are spending money on people like that. That's cool. I think that is great. If you're not getting outside and you're just chilling on your phone and that's what you're doing. And I think that's a problem with the youth right now. So yeah, like get outside, bring your phone, film your homie, make a sick edit. I'm here for that. Death scrolling, TikTok, not here for that. Yeah.
43:46Davis Torgerson:Like that on the chairlift that I just remember chairlifts is always just a great conversation with your buddy, but I bet you nowadays there's probably so many quiet chairlifts, just doom scrolling. but also like a lot of times you're cold so you're not like necessarily got the phone out like scrolling around true so it does promote good conversation and you're right it is a good good place to chop it up with friends for days um can you tell us about the reality show you and your brother had that was short-lived what happened there man like the media house guy in toronto for Red Bull Canada, because that's where Red Bull Canada is based out of.
44:27He came from Much Music or MTV. So he had these connections with them. And then that like started to actually like conspire. And it was like, holy shit, they want to do this show and let's make this happen. And here's a few different people that could direct it. And we are so lucky we ended up with Alex Craig, who's one of Rick's best friends. and the whole crew was all skate crew from Vancouver. And they did a fabulous job at it. We had so much fun. But yeah, like the party of it was insane. Like I think years were taken off our lives from those like seven episodes. But it was so fun, you know?
45:13This was like 2013. I was 19 years old and Craig was 21. Holy shit. Yeah. Yeah. And like the crew, those guys are friends for life. I see them all the time. We've got to work on different things like that crew shot a five gum commercial for us. We've done like so many different random things with those guys. So it's been a real give and take cool relationship and we had a ton of fun filming it. But yeah, it was a one season and done. Why? Why was that? The money for the crew, the money for us, the amount of effort, it just wasn't necessarily worth it. But I think it was a great way to get into like Canadian homes and maybe people that wouldn't watch snowboarding got to know us.
46:01And it was kind of 2013 and then boom, 2014, it really helped like introduce me to Canadians. and then it ended up going to a channel in Australia and even in the U.S. and people still reference that show, loved it. And there's a few like cringe things from it, but I'm not like, it's not like you look back and you're like hella embarrassed. You know, like it was kind of silly and fun for 19 and 20 year olds at that time.
46:33Davis Torgerson:Can you tell us about filming for the video Paved collab between Burton and Red Bull? Um, every bit of the Alaskan sections look terrifying, but what was the scariest part for you? Yeah, that was really, really nice to have my two like big partners collaborate on a movie. It was a two year film, got to go on a lot of fun trips. We did Japan and Alaska and a lot of time in BC, a little bit in Tahoe. But yeah, Alaska always stands out. It's hard to explain. the mountains are just really big they're really steep really scary it's really steep and but it's kind of like the the holy grail of our sport for backcountry snowboarding the snow forms really well there it like naturally flushes itself out because the mountains are really steep you can you can put a little a lot of confidence in the slope and I mean it's just different to what I I'd normally do you know like when you do a line and like a 360 in the line is like holy fuck you know that's kind of cool it like dumbs it down seeing a mountain studying it and then like trying to get a clip on it and trying to ride it as best you can and create art I really enjoy that side it's like not that like instant gratification that you'd maybe get if you won a contest but to like be out in the remote mountains filming with your friends and you get a clip you guys know clip high it's it's awesome it's super fun and you're you're building this project together with your closest homies and and and your your biggest supporters are behind it so it's really fun and i think anytime you can heliboard it's just like the the ultimate it's the highest of highs that's insane so you know when you're using the helicopter they just take you to the top you meet them at the bottom they take you back up yeah just goes back and forth all day it's basically instead of a chair yeah and you're not like riding a resort you're just like in these huge mountains and you have a guide and they have their finger on the pulse on snow conditions and like if it's moving and we're safe and you put a lot of faith in in the guide and studying terrain out of a helicopter window is crazy you're like oh yeah I can maybe pop off that and then you get on the ground and it's like so fucking huge and you're like I cannot pop off that and but it's it's really like an art and learning how to retrain and, and, and visually like scoping lines from a helicopter is something that is always going to be like a little frightening, but I think the more you do it, the more you get used to it.
49:30Must be surreal. That video wasn't seen, man. Yeah. And sometimes like when it's like so death defying, I'm not really loving it. So like I'm more, I really like the freestyle aspect. like oh sick there's like a wind lip there but like when you're like riding a line and there's a death on that side and death on that side and there's slough moving i'm just like i don't know if i need this to to tickle my fancy but um i think they got drones it's filmed with drones right a lot of drone a lot of big cine lens like sniping from another mountain across the way The cinematographers are so incredible and they need their shouts out too, because they're out there in crazy conditions and truly like mountain men.
50:21And to be able to move around in those situations and get the clips and it's a lot of like radio chatter and those guys deserve a lot of praise. And yeah, like it's super cinematic. They did an amazing job. dude i feel bad but i forget the guy's name the homie with the dreads who rides the long ass board oh zeb powell yeah he's amazing it's one of the coolest styles man his shit in japan was crazy i'm too locked into the snowboard videos right now yeah he's always been talented but like his voice is like i mean he took marshall lynch snowboarding the other day and like he's like he's really like getting into some impressive areas that's crazy yeah it's it's really is there a clip of that somewhere it's all over his instagram it's amazing i gotta check that man last summer you brought a bunch of skaters out to bc to open a new park with your foundation one of them being the goat the bird man tony hawk i think it was in smithers bc um just talk a little bit about that and your foundation and how it got started and what the plan is for it moving forward also circling back to like the the rooms i've been able to get in luckily through riding a snowboard like crazy like moments that have happened like one time yeah like trudeau and his family were in whistler and they just like got a hold of me and i just went boarding with him for the the afternoon and we had like stopped got bourbon caesars did a couple more runs like it was just so random and then i remember people were just tearing me apart for going i'm just like bro if the fucking prime minister of your country asks you to go boarding you just go yeah we didn't we didn't even talk about anything like that we just shredded and just chopped it up about the most random things but it's so funny how people got so worked up and i'm like man we know you were talking foreign policy on the ski lift we know what you were up to out there dude um kid from the island introduced me to tim comrade who runs a big foundation power to give they love to do awesome stuff and open they've put hockey rinks in remote areas and And we became friends and he knows I love snowboarding and skateboarding and knows I have connections in those industries.
52:55And he knows that we do a lot of foundation work. And like the McMorris Foundation is just basically like helping underprivileged youth find their passion through sport. Craig and I were super lucky to play every sport growing up. And we think it's taught us a lot and a lot of valuable life lessons. um skateboard or your snowboard you gotta get up a million times to get that trick and to get better and it teaches you insane work ethic and then any team sport i've played it's like you learn a lot about how to interact with others and how to how to work together and um as soon as we had any bit of success we were like hey let's start a foundation and try and give back because we felt super lucky to make it in sports.
53:43Anyways, I get connected with these guys and I know Tony a bit because I have a home in Encinitas and I see those guys around and a lot of friends of mine down there skate for a living. So I've known Tony a little bit. I reached out to him and I said, hey, like Power to Give is putting a lot of effort into building this remote skate park up and Smithers. They need a revamp and they've raised a ton of money to do so. It's almost done. Would you be willing to come up on behalf of Power to Give, McMorris Foundation, and open this skate park? And he was pretty receptive to it because it was in Canada, because the Tony Hawk Foundation opened skate parks in America.
54:28That's their thing. And so it was like, oh shit, we found, we found the gray area. He's down. And, um, it was kind of surreal. We put it all together. He, he was like, can I bring these people? And I was like, fuck yeah, let's do it. And we went up there and with almost like no promotion, it was just like an incredible day for the community. Like when did those kids or even adults in Smithers think the bird man's going to come? Like, it was just so special. And I think they had just a fabulous time. People from like far away were there too. Like all of Smithers was there, but like people from Terrace and Prince George.
55:13And it was just, it was amazing, man. And he's just such a pro. He interacted with everyone, gave everyone the time of day, brought Grayson up, who was just incredibly entertaining for the kids. and they skated super hard and for a long time and everyone seemed to really enjoy it. And yeah, just trying to like target the things we love to do, which are snowboard and skateboard and play sports in general and just try and give back there. So I don't think the McMorris Foundation is going to slow down anytime soon. We're just full force on that. So you're heading to your fourth Olympics coming up soon here,
55:57Davis Torgerson:which is an accomplishment in itself. Some Carmelo Anthony shit right there. Can you give us some of your highlights over the first three? And I know you mentioned the one earlier, but any special Olympic moments and special bonus question for me. Does the Olympic Village pop off as hard as they say? I think probably at the summer games, it pops a bit more, but dude, people are so laser focused, like including myself a bit, you know, you kind of have your horse blinders on trying not to try not to like lose sight of what you're trying to do there. But also like once it's kind of like wrapped up, people definitely like have fun.
56:41And I stayed in the Olympic Village, my first and second Olympics. And then in 2022, we stayed at a hotel, which was much better. Like, it's so funny. It's like the pinnacle of sport, if you will. But like in the Olympic Village, the beds are trash and like the food ain't that good. And it's this kind of bizarre. So like everyone's been different in a sense, but always good time. Always a lot of inspiring people around this time around. It's pretty split up. Like I think a lot of the freestyle events, half by eight and snowboarding and all that is up in Lavinia, which is a place I have been many years ago.
57:29Yeah, I look forward to it. it's a it's an olympics that like a ton of friends and family will be able to come to obviously the last one was super coveted out so being in italy it's one that people want to come to i think it'll be really enjoyable um i'm just incredibly honored to still be at it and still be able to go to an olympics like to go to have four is pretty insane like when i think back There's not a guy that was in slope style in 2014 that will be in 2026. So I'm thankful for the longevity. I'm thankful for the fun I've been having that I still want to be doing it. That's really special.
58:13I'm happy to still even be in the conversation and riding at this level. I think if I ride to the best of my ability, I can do well. So that's the goal. Yes. Good luck, man. Thanks. I have to watch. Thank you. what's next for Mark McMorris after the Olympics after the Grand Prix after the X Games when everything settles down what's the plan that's a long ways away man tough question to answer sorry keep having fun keep pushing myself do some filming there's an event that's held pretty in pretty high regards for snowboarding as a whole it's called natural selection it's kind of like a backcountry event.
58:52I'm going to do that in March. But yeah, just a slow, smooth transition into the spring, summer and kind of like gear up for some foundation stuff. Kind of just circle back with the homies. I've been pretty locked in, you know, like taking care of myself like crazy, haven't been out much or socializing a ton, just really like trying to make sure my body's working good and my mind's all good and i feel like it might be one of my last olympics so i was like okay let's try my hardest and like do the best i can in my preparation and feel as good as i can so um yeah i look forward to spring summer to say the least yo yo yo it's rapid fire with the ghost and this week we're honored to be
59:46Davis Torgerson:to be brought to you by Crooked Skateboards. Crooked Spring Drop One is in shops now, featuring a banger lineup, a new guest pro board from Spanky, a glittery ruby red Manderson DBX, a twin tail slick Bobby Wars pro model, plus heaters from the rest of the squad. One of those little crooked birds chirped us saying they're dropping a video on their YouTube any day now, and they're introducing a new rider in it. who could it be now hey look you know i'm real for life but i'm gonna need one of those bobby boards to shake the rust off my switch trays once the snow melts up here in t dot mark jim somebody send me a box you dig
1:00:34Davis Torgerson:all right mark rapid fire let's get it brother favorite skater or snowboarder devin walsh canadian snowboarder jp walker and then favorite skater it's it's hard like i grew up in that time like i i have to say mccrank that's a great answer favorite video um for snowboarding it's called follow me around favorite skate video hockey four sick favorite video part jake anderson's like most recent part quick strike his part in there is amazing and favorite uh snowboard part is jp walker technical difficulties favorite style ja across the board jet anderson skater and snowboarder i think he's got one of the best styles yeah that's nice with it which skater or snowboarder had the biggest influence on the way you skate slash snowboard.
1:01:34And I think back to the early days, JP Walker had such a huge influence on me on the skate side. I have to just say McCrank again. Like I, I loved him. He was like my childhood hero for skating. Hell yeah.
1:01:50Davis Torgerson:Yeah. He killed me. Most talented skate and snowboarder on planet earth. It's pretty hard not to say you Joe here or go me. I mean, he can skate tranny amazingly and he can do any trick in the street. And then the most talented snowboarder. Yeah. Travis Rice. Favorite trick. Favorite trick. Method. Skateboard. Kickflip. Dude, I thought it was going to be front big, man. You got a mean front big spin. Thank you. Thank you. Hardest trick for you. Switch. Backside. Rodeo. hardest trick on a skateboard i struggle with a backside big spin but i do love it sick nice i love when people can do that trick really well i think it's dope sam uh most illegal trick most illegal trick in snowboarding is definitely when people do like a double nose or double tail grab like rocket air or double tail um dude i don't know what's illegal in skating for that that's hard all good double tail sounds uh sounds whack probably double tail and skateboarding uh favorite clip you've ever gotten it's from brothers mcmorris it's a natural back seven in alaska favorite clip i ever got skating uh would be trey flipped down I think it's a sixth stair.
1:03:23And it's in Saskatchewan. And it's probably from like 2009 or something.
1:03:29Davis Torgerson:That might be as big as Dono's got his tray flip to go over the years. What are you saying about me, man? What is happening here, dude? Dono skates really well. I didn't realize how good of a skater you were. And then I saw your clips and I was like, damn. Past tense, dude. That's past tense, man. What's the worst trend you've been a part of? leg bags what the hell is that no yeah it was like this air blaster thing you'd put on your leg and like it had like pockets and stuff it was just it was a weird time i remember my brother like kind of like jokingly got it for me for christmas because he thought they were whack i thought they were cool because people i looked up to wore them pretty sure jed wore them what's the gnarliest trick you've ever witnessed this japanese kid last year at x games did uh 23 40 so i think it's He's six and a half 360s and just did it so well and just so bold.
1:04:39His name's Hiroto. And that was probably the craziest thing I've ever seen.
1:04:44Davis Torgerson:Wasn't there a snowboard game back in the day called like 1280 or something? Like this full almost doubled that. It was some rotation. Yeah, I feel like there's been a lot of snowboard video games, but that being one of them. in 2016 uh mark mcmorris infinite air came out you got a video game x xbox one and ps4 you should look it up it's hilarious that's the tony hawk of snowboarding man did you get to pick the cast of riders uh yeah but i was pretty persuaded my agent had me pick a lot of his his crew but it was sick we had fun doing it and um there are great people in it what's dude that is so sick man what's the one trick that got away last year i switched back 10 on this jump in alaska that i would have loved to have in my uh in the movie but i just couldn't make it happen still lose sleep over it oh fuck uh what's the biggest bunt you've ever witnessed brock crouch from 12.
1:05:58Davis Torgerson:oh shit i don't know why that made me laugh so i don't know who he is he's gonna hear that and be like what yeah he's a homie that's why i can say about it that's gonna hurt him it might hurt but he needs to hear it oh you know what that's one time we had uh our buddy call out one of his buddies to 50 50 this like kind of scary rail at their local park and he heard the call out and he got motivated and he went and did it we posted it on instagram oh it was amazing so maybe maybe this is the motivation brock needs man maybe i'm lighting a fire baby yeah we need this uh what's the last new trick you learned backside 1980 holy fuck holy shit man yeah i was happy to learn a new trick you can like that's like a big air trick Yeah, but honestly might even need it in a slope style run if you want to be on the box.
1:07:00Davis Torgerson:Jeez, man. Dream job after snowboarding. Company owner. Wicked. Love it. Favorite local brand? Haven. Those boys are cool guys. Canadian guys. I think their shit's dope. Favorite local snowboarder? his name on instagram is better than the police his name's brin alexander he's really dope nice sick um this one if you don't have one it's fine but what's the one sponsor you regret riding for no regrets you picked you picked right you first yeah favorite teammate ever Danny Davis worst teammate ever his name's Tyler Nicholson because he's always getting me into trouble and he came to the Olympics with me in 2018 and then we like stole some beer from the Team Canada house, a bunch of Molson and then he put it on Snapchat fucking rookie and then we got in trouble i love that worst trend like i talked about on like tricks like a lot of people are like doing these double nose and double tail and like pulling their shit super close so they can like rotate faster but it just looks so whack and i i'm just not i'm not here for it it sounds like it's just not for me picturing it looking like a skier rotating like that yeah yeah they're like when you think about like aerial skiing it's like almost the same that sounds dusty um worst style sean white when he was wearing tight ass pants oh shit he just looked so good and normal with his baggy pants and then he started wearing like leopard print skin tight pants and I'm like bruh you can't dig away from the talent but god you could definitely make yourself look better out there but he's back on the baggy pants so that's good to see all right that's that is good all right mark last but not least who's the last person you want on the sesh i'm so like i don't want to hurt people's feelings it's fucked well mark man i know you're a busy man schedule is only going to get busier thank you so much for coming on the show man appreciate this you know my favorite episode i have to say this is dude it's so funny i i've listened to it multiple times but the will marshall episode is just it's the best one dude it's so fucking funny to me anyways i i just had to say it
1:10:06All right. Welcome back to Random Skater of the Week, the fastest growing segment on YouTube, hosted by our good friend Davis Torgerson and brought to you by Mob Grip, the number one choice of professional skateboarders worldwide. Man, and the reason's simple. It's just the grippiest. Head down to your local skate shop because you know they've got Mob. This week, Patrick Odell in the building and uh i'd say there's a little bit of pressure on you today man people might think that i'm kind of some expert in skateboarding because i do a skateboarding history show but man if you guys really know i'm watching youtubes of people's parts i'm not knowing who people are but you you do have like random factoids that you just hear
1:10:53Davis Torgerson:through the amount of sources that you are covering i'm sure there's i've watched some of these there was a guy i don't want to say who it was but you guys did an episode and i did not know the winner it could have gone like i never heard of the winner where i think me if i was a guest then i would have had to pretend like oh which i might do in a couple minutes even when you got the answer still didn't know but then i youtube i just go on youtube and i just try to catch up patrick a lot of a lot of the vague filler clues that get us to a certain length of time you might be the one that knows some of this shit I feel like it's possible hopefully it's a skater from like 2005 to 10 and then outside Patrick's wheelhouse I'm really hoping for like somebody from 93 and then I'll just be good like I used to know who was flow for chocolate you know what I mean now I go into the shop that was when I really realized I was getting old.
1:11:56I was like, I looked at the wall and there was a pro and anti-hero that I had never heard of. And I was like, dude, I'm dropping. Whatever. And then people talk shit. They'll be like, oh, epically littered is like lost touch, doesn't know what's going on. And I'll get mad. Like, dude, what? But then behind the scenes, I'm like, he's right. I don't know. He got me. Shit.
1:12:19Davis Torgerson:Well, I think you have an idea. But for those, I guess, that don't i'm gonna just start lifting off clues listing off clues to a random skater y 'all get three guesses um you can blurt them out at any time you can ask questions we do need to touch up the if everyone i think we did this we've done this but if everyone uses all three of their clues and the skater has still not been guessed everyone is back in with one more clue a little sudden death over time am i allowed to take notes yeah as long as there's no like googling on that pen yeah yeah absolutely you know how they like changed overtime for josh allen and it's like the josh allen rule this could be the like chad dixon rule yeah it's like the minnesota vikings that they change every rule after they lose but i digress i digress you don't have to get into that um you guys ready we're ready let's do this i need a fucking w let's go yeah all right patrick start writing down previous teammates of this skater include Riley Hawk Stefan Janowski and Blake Carpenter
1:13:35I think
1:13:35Davis Torgerson:is this our first note taker? I really respect it because what happens is when I watch them I can't remember clue one when it gets to clue five so I was like I'll just write it down That's the goal.
1:13:51Davis Torgerson:This skater has had a crooked guest board. Fucking hell. I don't know why I just don't look up the crooked guest boards after this. We've got to be like coming close to all of them. They're going to be running out.
1:14:09Still somewhat vague, but I'm just going to say this skater has had a trans world part.
1:14:17okay
1:14:22Davis Torgerson:um okay this skater skated in a metallica music video what just threw me off I know the video see this is what I'm saying dude I think my filler clues those are the clues So there were actually two skaters in the video. Not all of them skated in it. I believe the director was Buddy. Buddy Nichols. What? You know, I don't know the director, but... Dude, this is the random factoid. Buddy's sick. Could be Rick Trenowski, maybe. Could be. I can't remember. I gotta guess quick. We'll figure this out after. Okay, where, oh, where do we go from here?
1:15:26This skater had a pro shoe called the Esteban.
1:15:37I recognize that.
1:15:44Do you? No, probably not. Whatever, man. Is it Justin Figueroa?
1:15:55Not Figgy.
1:16:03All right, let's keep going. Okay. Speaking of shoes, this skater had a colorway for the shoe brand Alife. Oh, what the hell? That's random.
1:16:18Davis Torgerson:Was it Stevie Williams? Yeah, probably.
1:16:26Davis Torgerson:It's Stevie Williams. Shit. Why the fuck was he in Metallica, man? I'm back, man. Yo, Heathcourt chart, man. Where you at, bro? Pull up. Yeah. We're AYC teammates. Fuck. Yep. previous teammates were all with Asphalt Yakub. Ever since you told us that the teammates are only shoes and boards it's gone awry. It's always been shoes, boards, clothing. So you say. Don't bring up the tape man. I've done Supreme before. I actually knew I was going to get Stevie off like the second clue but then after you said Transworld part but I wanted to let it breathe a little bit. You know what I'm saying? That was a guess.
1:17:09Davis Torgerson:It wasn't like I need for a fact. that's so cool all i was thinking about was like hash guy so i was like oh metallica video yeah that's riley hawk i was like oh this is like baker lakai or like no the teammates gave it away asphalt yeah i knew it but i was like there's no way it could be stevie and a fucking metallica thing what shoe was the esteban or rest of on i think it was a super shoe yeah i knew that one too, sort of. Patrick, my next clue was going to be Wheels of Fortune 411 issue 9. Do you remember that? No, that wouldn't help me. That was like 95. Close to 93. I've known Stevie for fucking 30 years, but none of these clues would have helped me get Stevie.
1:17:58I don't feel ashamed. I feel like I don't feel ashamed of my performance. I'm like, you got it fast.
1:18:04Davis Torgerson:Yeah, he got it really quickly. when you dropped the director i was like we're done like how do you know the date i don't know if buddy directed that oh shouts to stevie too come come do the quiz bro he hit me fuck directed by the malloys oh the malloys fuck man i was just eric coston was in that music video or in that music video too but he was yeah we just did that right so i was wrong i just was i was just fake it till you make it but you had a pen dude you you looked like super convincing and smart dude actually it would have been so sick if you showed the piece of paper and it was just like a stick figure drawing had a guest appearance in the tv series the game i didn't know that did a video shoot for playboy with also eli reed and brain of biebel and tony alva turn pro for profile maybe that should have been higher up has had a pro model for three different brands javier nunez guest trick in the skaters video part almost skated for seek skateboards then it's like brand owner skated for fit teammates with kelvin hoffler on a watch brand oh shit stevie left a pair of shoes in my car once what like in the 90s pair of nikes like fresh shoes and it was like I don't know why he left him there and it was like a week later I was like fucking I'm gonna wear him and I wore him to a party and then I saw Stevie and I kind of forgot and all of a sudden he's pointing at my feet like ready to ready to fucking kill me like laughing and pointing at my feet there were some Nikes or something and uh whatever almost killed me that's amazing the one person you don't want to see I know I love that I'm back man what can I say do you guys have the running tally of who how many wins you guys have no we just do it by season I enjoy this show I watch them I don't I wouldn't say I watch everyone or whatever but I watch them a lot they're in my algorithm appreciate that it's always fun well Patrick thank you for coming on even in my imagination I don't win them very often Yeah, me either.
1:20:25You know what I mean? My reality or my imagination. Yeah. You've got mail. Welcome back to the post office. Brought to you by our good friends over at Dickie Skateboarding. Quality workwear since 1922. From the work site to the streets. Ain't nobody keep you fitted like Dickie's, man. All right, Ghost, who we got up first?
1:20:50Davis Torgerson:All right, let's see. Thank you, everyone. last week the post office was uh short and sweet three emails and this week there's like 30 in here so much appreciated bond gang all right from john metz welcome back to another barn burner season love it when i see new episodes question what guests have you guys had on that you were like there's no way he will say yes to this and then you reached out and they actually came on like which person surprised you the most my favorite episode ever is that Jake Phelps one rest in peace and that seems super nerve wracking to pitch that guy but it worked killing it as always we the people are grateful for you guys respect respect to you man thanks for being in the post office real shit John from Boise which one do we pitch that I never thought would happen i mean that's like almost every other week dude i expect it to be harder than it is sometimes and like over the years it's definitely got even easier but we found ourselves in some jams sometimes um it's hard to say but like there's so many um biebel i never thought we'd get biebel that was a crazy one stevie williams in the early days i I think we were in Boston when we did that one or when that one dropped.
1:22:22Like that was insane to have happen way back when. Obviously Phelps, like we've done people who we never had pictured in our wildest dreams. So like basically every other week, I assume they're going to say no and it just keeps happening, man. It's like a wild dream we're living.
1:22:44Davis Torgerson:yeah nowadays i feel like we're approaching the 10-year mark i'm really excited for that day we should probably look up the exact date and we'll have a party or something but it's in may at some point but yeah i feel like it's got to be someone from the first two three years when we weren't as you know known or established or whatever you want to call it but I'll go with yours Jake Phelps that one still blows my mind that we got him on because I don't think he really knew he didn't really know of us and I think when we asked him to come on he kind of asked around and then I think people were like oh yeah you should do it but he wasn't he never listened to the pod or anything like that so that was strictly like shout out to whoever convinced him to come on because it definitely wasn't us and that's an all time favorite of mind as well.
1:23:38Davis Torgerson:I remember re-listening to it after he passed away and it was just, I'm so glad we got that. Rest in peace. Um, and the other one that comes to mind, we've told this story a handful of times, but P-Rod, because that was the fifth interview we ever did. And not that we're like master interviewers now, but we were definitely noobs at the time. And, uh, yeah, we just pulled up the Spanish Mike's hotel room with a backup P-Rod interview ready when we heard they were sharing rooms and then paul came in like maybe for and just sat on the bed quietly for the last 10 minutes of spanish's interview and then we said what up and shit when we're done and we're like hey do you want to do one he's like yeah we're like well we have an interview here ready um so that that was awesome we didn't put it out as the fifth yeah yeah shoot your shot I was like, yeah, he's like, they came prepared.
1:24:32I think that was season one.
1:24:33Davis Torgerson:And it was such a big deal that we saved it for season two. We're like, no, no, we can't put this out just yet. We need to save this. Yeah. I feel like winning was like that, too. That was a huge one. Oh, yeah. Like at the time, I think it would be more like of a viable interview now. But like at the time, it seems like it wouldn't happen. And then the ghost pulled that one off. Savage. Two people we should get on again that you mentioned, I think are actually winning would be great to catch up with them. Now he came to the barbecue in Detroit last summer, like so hyped. He's out and, and doing great and Bebel round two.
1:25:16Davis Torgerson:That one's probably impossible, but that would be amazing as well. Yeah. And then favorite episode ever. just one no short list just one like what is the one where someone's like what should i which one should i listen to who where do you send people um oh was that a question or did you just make that up yeah yeah no he said i think that's a question um okay i'll go with oh maybe i did make that up you did make it up but whatever it can't pick favorite um i'll just say the one that i tell people to listen to if they've never heard of the show and they're curious i usually say um fred gall and i urge them to listen to the monk story if they want to go straight for a laugh.
1:26:19Yeah. Extremely impressive story. I'll say current cables, man. Because I would never be more shocked than all of the current cables stuff that came up in that interview. Wicked email. Thank you, John. All right. Next up, we've got an email from Adrian. Nowhere. Let's take a listen. It's actually a voice note.
1:27:15of the legend of Bill Chow, the goaded ATV, the best of all time at skating, everything. I think it's important that we share this information with the youth and try to educate them as to where styles of skateboarding have come from, and really just to highlight some legends that maybe they've never heard of. Thanks, y 'all. Let me know what you think. Peace.
1:27:41Do you watch any of that Bill Chow documentary?
1:27:45Davis Torgerson:no but it is 100 on my list of things to watch and i remember specifically colt cannon in his rapid fire like every answer was phil shau it was like favorite skater favorite style who you know influenced your skating i i just remember he said phil shau like so many times and so it locked in my brain because i wasn't too familiar with him growing up but yeah I will watch that before next week's episode I'm about halfway through and for someone who knew not much about Phil Schaub other than he's like well respected it's pretty eye opening of like his level of greatness and like how everyone loved him so definitely cool documentary yeah it's important man but the history is so rich like it's hard if the kids don't want to learn and you're fighting the lost cause, you know?
1:28:45Yeah.
1:28:46Davis Torgerson:100%. I mean, there's kids in Toronto. I can be annoying, probably. I mean, they're not kids now, but I remember some of the younger skaters. I always used to be quizzing them at Ash Bridges. If I go by myself and I'm just skating with random, well, at the time, let's say Chris Shannon and stuff like that, I'd always be like, all right like tonight go home and watch all the wade fight footage you can find on youtube or watch all the russ milligan like i'd always hit them with the canadian stuff at sh armstrong and stuff like that um but yeah it's it's more and more overwhelming every time whenever we do random skater now like everyone's it's always the same answer it's like i used to be like a skate nerd and i've lost track so it is tough for kids and you know how it's not like when we started of skating we watched every video from like two generations before us so it's probably even more overwhelming now but it is important and that's why i love yeah i love what um i love epically latered i love what thrasher's doing now with these phil show type docs um feedback ted spot history even in toronto uh we got justin behan doing his thing with toronto spot history so all that stuff's important i mean everyone who has a pod and interviews people it's all part of it um and uh it ain't going away so it's up to the kids to to want to absorb it those legends never die thanks for the voice note all right next up we got an email from nicholas septian septian hype for the new season thought we'd have to wait a few more months for a new one so xander mitchell turned pro for studio like eight years ago and had a board with them for a long time on the podcast you guys and xander kind of skipped over that in his episode and referred to the jacuzzi board as him turning pro while studio is a small company i always thought of xander's board with them as legit i do remember seeing a couple canadians on slap saying turning pro for a canadian company doesn't count while they were celebrating Xander's board on jacuzzi.
1:31:06Davis Torgerson:What's your guys take on whether the studio board counted as turning pro or not? Is it more so a Canadian thing that local brands turning people pro isn't viewed as legit? Or is it more so about smaller companies turning people pro in general?
1:31:26Great question. I didn't even know man.
1:31:34that's my bad that's no disrespect to Studio I love that shit wicked team always well I guess it just meant a little something different to Xander to you know have the pro board on jacuzzi for whatever reason I don't think it's not legit to go pro for a Canadian company I just plead ignorance man I had no idea
1:32:01Davis Torgerson:i i knew and completely forgot so also no disrespect i've completely forgot that he had that board on studio all those years ago uh but it's just two completely different things like in my eyes there's canadian pro and that's its own thing and i have all the respect for there's some really dope boards up here or board brand studio um jenny and i'm gonna stop naming because i'm gonna forget some and not trying to be rude but there's there's levels i think if you're if you've been skating for a long time you it's just something you understand but like some of those boards while they may be selling around the world it's just not the same they don't have the same reach as some of well nowadays there's a billion board brands but like i understand why it would count a set like it almost counts as the first time he turned pro because now he's turning pro on a bigger stage um and i think everyone that has a canadian brand that's smaller understands that too like it's just it's not a disrespect thing but um yeah it's a it's a tough thing to pinpoint but we're proud of xander let's just leave it at that good for you and we love studio pro boards man good for xander man yeah studio has had some some uh great graphics over the years man that's for sure great graphics shout out brian weary always all right next up we've got an email from noah burley hey y 'all hope you're doing well can Can we please get a little bit more hockey slash NHL talk in the rundown?
1:33:47My wife and I started watching hockey this season, and it has completely changed our lives to where we are now partial season ticket holders for our local AHL team. Being from Texas, we are huge Dallas Stars fans. Donald, if you had to pick a team other than the Maple Leafs to root for, which team are you picking? Thanks, y 'all. dude yeah the hockey talk has been slipping um i mean we're only three episodes in and we've had a lot of off-season nfl stuff to get to with the nfl all wrapped up i feel like you know we're gonna get to some hockey talk we're a day away from hockey and the olympics starting which uh is a very very important tournament for canada uh the usa wants to steal hockey from us Canadians real bad, you know.
1:34:42Sucks I'm going to have to cheer against my boy, Austin Matthews. Big Austin Matthews household over here. And cheer for Connor McDavid. That'll be great. Anytime we get to cheer for Crosby and McDavid, I love that stuff. Dude, down in Dallas, they have a wicked team, wicked young team. That's awesome that they started watching hockey. That's wicked. um safe actually is uh halfway through a heated argument with one of our buddies uh six-year-old about who he would start his franchise with current player current date connor mcdavid or sydney crosby have you come to a conclusion who you would take
1:35:26Davis Torgerson:oh come on it's called the common sense thing and it's connor mcdavid of course how how many years younger is he 11 years younger or something there's no debate something like that there's no worry that mcdavid might not ever get over that uh we're starting to block he has in the finals no we're talking about starting a franchise from scratch who do you want present day we're not talking about their current teams and whatever just who who's the building block at this age i think you said crosby's 38 like it's just nah it's conor mcdavid sixers smoking crack in my opinion it's crazy because you can make an argument to take someone in this uh nhl current date over mcdavid though there is it there is another option now you're now you're adding to the debate yeah um okay let me get david's question If I didn't cheer for the Leafs, who would I cheer for?
1:36:36And the answer would be right now. I mean, I watch the Sharks because I like Macklin Celebrity. He's exciting. And I do like Dallas as well. It's a good team. But I would go with – I can't pick anyone in the East because I hate them all to bits, man. I hate every last one of them. I can't die I'd go Minnesota I'd root with Davis You know Me and Davis Argue about all things sports It would be cool to have something To cheer for together But right now It's Team Canada man Austin Matthews Public Academy number one He's got a problem With winning too man Shit He ain't won nothing It's crazy He's the captain of the US And we obviously Have Crosby And they put their two resumes Up against each other That ain't looking good, bro.
1:37:35Still young. Matthew's resume-ish. Dude, if he had to go out on the find a new job, that resume ain't getting him far.
1:37:45Davis Torgerson:I know, Burley. You just took over the post office with Hockey Talk. I hope you're happy. Alright, next up we got an email from Norby Guerrero. Yo, so what the hell happened with the 303 beef? also flat earth or round earth all my homies think that earth is flat and call me the r word for believing otherwise wow okay so your crew is a little where's norby from crazy maybe they're gaslighting you yeah i know where are you from fucking that might be actually can't say anywhere it's gonna be gonna get in trouble if you name any place that he might be from saying they're dumb. Just careful. No, dude.
1:38:30Guess where he's from, please. Let's both guess. No. Come on, dude. Obviously from Florida somewhere. Come on. Somewhere in Florida. Oh, no. He went there. Had to be, dude. We didn't get an update. What is even the point? I thought there was an email. Maybe it's coming up later in the post office. Someone said something or another. it's obviously round like what is this what is this dude yeah
1:39:07Davis Torgerson:yeah we can move on from that dude um round you're not crazy and there there was an update though someone just said this day and age it wasn't malicious this day and age there's so much stuff coming out that If there's going to be ABDs, that's kind of what we went with. If it's not malicious, it's all good. It's impossible to keep track. But then it was explained to us that some of the animosity was created out of the fact that this, I forget who's who, but maybe it's the guys who filmed the original video put their heart and soul into this shot video, dropped some bangers. You know, kind of goes a little bit under the radar and unnoticed.
1:39:54And then homies come to town. Obviously, they want to skate the spots that they just saw in the newest video. Makes sense. Everyone does that. They end up doing some of the same tricks and they get the tricks on Thrasher. So that makes sense, dude. It adds up. Like when you feeble the Arto double kink and then someone does it after you and they get it posted on Thrasher.
1:40:18Davis Torgerson:You're going to be a little butthurt. That's fair. Exactly. Okay. That's all wrapped up. We've got an email from Martin Warner. Donovan Safla, two years ago, I saw a bigger dad at the park with his wife and two kids. Without much warm-up, the dad tried to ollie up the Eurogap. The second he popped off the ramp, the skateboard left his feet and his body turned 90 degrees and horizontal. The father then slammed straight onto his spine on the edge of the step-up. I was certain his back was broken. The dad did get up, but he looked hurt. I then made eye contact with his wife, and she just shook her head and said he built different.
1:41:00To me, it was incredible. Have either of you seen any random fools take a sick bale of sin recently that made you feel alive? Anywho, great start to the season. Forever bunting, Marty. Wow. Interesting. Yo, shout out to the wife. always holding down her man you know and he built different um not recently but i do have a funny story um good friend of the pod of ours now for years adam reviglia i'll never forget the first day i met this kid i think he had already been skating at the loft with a bunch of mutual friends who had known him cody shane eldridge everyone but i had never met him before and i'm at the off with all the the boys the skate loft guys chill day so far and then in comes adam revigla loud as he usually is talking trash at this point he's probably like 17 years old uh cocky as well walks in says what do you guys want to see and someone said kick front 50 the flat ledge.
1:42:12So he's whatever. No problem. Cocky. Got this swagger about him. I'm like, who the hell is this kid coming in this hot? You know what I mean? I've never seen this kid. What the fuck's up with him? Goes for kick 50. Massive pop. Because if you know him, he's got one of the best kickflips. Pops over the ledge. Catches it primo. Lands on the ledge primo. Slips out right onto his back. like gnarly. I'm like worried about him because I don't know him, but everybody's dying laughing because if you know him, you would laugh at him for that. And then he just like, he was down, man. And I was like shocked that everyone was like screaming, laughing, rolling on the ground.
1:42:56I'm worried about the guy and he's hurt, like visibly hurt. Didn't skate again that day. Like came to loft, tried one trick, broke his back. But great first, first memory of Adam Revigo
1:43:11Davis Torgerson:damn I'm actually so bummed I wasn't there for that that sounds glorious um and I'm having a complete brain fart here I can't think of a like a random person slamming like that but I do love that he added that made you feel alive it's just an extra detail witness someone slam that made you feel alive um but yeah let's just wrap up the post office on that wonderful Adam slam and fuck you Adam he made me lose all my money on my Super Bowl bets yesterday
1:43:48yeah alright y 'all know what to do get your emails voice notes videos in to the button live at gmail.com we'll catch y 'all next week
1:44:06this is the rundown the skateboard world source for sports the super bowl has come and gone i never another nfl season in the rear view mirror uh first off what'd you think of the game
1:44:24Davis Torgerson:one of the most anticlimactic super bowls i've seen in my 11 or 11 years ish as an nfl fan um but i mean it's cool to see the drake i mean the uh sam darnold story you know have its fairy tale ending i wish he had more like attitude he's so boring like doesn't say anything in interviews there's no like shitting on all the haters so it was just kind of a meh super bowl but we watched it with the homies uh at our friend simon's house so that was fun it's fucking freezing here so it was nice to get out of the house and hang with the boys but not much to say about the game dude there must have been a writer's strike in in hollywood because the script writers got this one all wrong man this was the worst end to like a really good playoff and looking back and seeing the other potential um matchups that could have been just crazy the Bears get in you know it's going to be crazy the Rams get in you know it's going to be a shootout Jacksonville takes that next step like just a pretty much anybody and then the Patriots played potentially the worst game of anybody all season it was pitiful what they were doing I forget what the fucking offensive the left tackle for the Patriots gave up The most pressures in Super Bowl history in like any game, like 14 pressures from that one side.
1:46:00You know, homies have nightmares. Drake May came out and said that he wants to do it all over again. So the question I pose to you with the gauntlet of quarterbacks in the AFC, you know, the names, Josh Allen, Joe Burrow, Lamar Jackson, Patrick Mahomes. you got Trevor Lawrence wanting a piece now there's always Herbert waiting in the wings does Drake May and the Patriots truly get another shot at this
1:46:35Davis Torgerson:I mean I would I wouldn't be mad at it but I don't think so next year like I think man everyone was like schedule schedule schedule ever oh yeah I think they have a chance to get back I definitely think they have a chance to get back, but I think they skipped they were way ahead of schedule and the Schedule was also so favorable and then even in the playoffs they were against tough defenses, but man every team they went against was Just fucked in one way or another no line for the Chargers. That was not even a game No, Nico Collins and fucking the Monstars stole fucking CJ Stroud's powers uh the amount of turnovers you have so many short fields yeah no that's true it could have been so many short fields hours and then i can't even remember the what was the backup qb's name instead of fucking played for the broncos stidham like come on man that was and they barely beat them they barely beat the broncos like if it wasn't for stidham blamed it on the blizzard dumb fumble um so it was unfortunate man like i wish the jags made it or someone just more exciting obviously i know you wish the bills made it um there was just at least on the afc side there were so many better more fun options seattle came and did their part but yeah the rams got to be kicking themselves better options had they on that other side as well like yeah but i just think if there was a better team to face seattle it could have been a better one yeah oh yeah um um but they don't get back there rams would have smoked them too no never in his in drake's career dude bro look at the quarterbacks man look at the like it couldn't have been easier he didn't have to play one good quarterback you know and like he doesn't even have a good team realistically herbert like digs herbert digs is yeah i said good quarterback the book's out on herbert too like he's been getting overvalued for a long time now um they don't have good wide receivers they were getting the job done with the makeshift crew stevenson and henderson they they didn't do much the best player on that team is the corner Christian Gonzalez.
1:49:00Is that his name? Yes, that's the best player on the team. I don't think that they can beat any of those teams with a great quarterback. And this was the down year. This was the Bills year. But unfortunately, the Patriots got there. Yeah, I mean, what a run. Good for the Patriots. But there's no second dynasty. There's no, you know, we're back. The rebuild's over. The rebuild is you're still in the middle of the rebuild, to be honest with you. You just somehow got to this. Congrats to the Seahawks. One of the more dominant performances we've seen in a Super Bowl. Would have liked to see JSN have that moment.
1:49:45Kind of, you know, like such a great season. Anointing himself as the top tier wide receiver that he is. Would have liked to see him break off a big play for a touchdown or something like that. But hey, they'll take the win. Yeah, like you said, very anticlimactic. Even in the celebrations, we were like, are we celebrating this? Is this happening? Did someone win an MVP? I don't even know. They kind of didn't really give it to Kenneth Walker, but I guess he got it. I don't know what the hell was going on there. Yeah. What an odd evening of football. One of the worst games of the playoffs.
1:50:24Davis Torgerson:Yeah. It was unfortunate because it felt like the game there was never any excitement in the game unless you're a Seahawks fan because it went 12 to 0 off field goals and I don't think The Patriots had even crossed the the 43 yard line I think was the number of the Seahawks So there was never any excitement of like it being a game Going into halftime with zero points and then they scored a touchdown and you're like, all right, it's over And then they finally got a touchdown in the fourth And then they're driving to like maybe cut it to one score, throw a pick. And that was the closest we came to any excitement.
1:51:01Davis Torgerson:It was a snooze fest. And the halftime show had people talking way more than the game. Yeah. I had more fun listening to Ben Davis tell me about his LRT experience than watching the football game. That was one of the most. That was a wild card game at best. That was a middle of October football game. uh nfl probably bumped on that i saw an amazing meme you probably saw it too i know we follow all the same meme accounts and shit but the one where it was like um super bowl with like a ghost thing on it's like a sheet on it and then the guy pulls off the the hat and it's like thursday night football that's actually what it was you're right it was a it was a random october game but you just forgot the detail that it was a thursday night game the other thing is the panel was awful too i forget who was on there but they were i think it's jason mccourty jason garrett one of the mccourty mccourty twins i don't know but two they this not engaging bad experience and Usually the NFL nails that stuff.
1:52:18So, yeah, looking forward to next season already. Let's leave that game and experience in the rearview mirror. Yeah. Yeah, dude. I just don't. I feel bad for the Patriots. And, you know, they were hyped to get back there. And that was what they got. And I feel bad for the fans. Whatever. I spent the whole day watching the Olympics. I'm super excited the Olympics are back. Some people aren't as into the Olympics. But I don't know. For some reason, ever since CBC in Canada dropped this app where we can just watch every event on our phone for free, it's changed the way I look at the Olympics. User-friendly.
1:53:01Real shit. Minimal ads. I love it. I'm taking a break at work. I'm popping on whatever. Speed skating. You know, Jake Paul's soon-to-be wife broke the Olympic record and won a gold medal in women's speed skating. Lindsey Vonn takes that horrific crash. Obviously, we got our boy, Mark McMorris, about to hold it down. Hopefully, fingers crossed in slope style, he got hurt. And then hockey, the main event. Summer or Winter Olympics, favorite event to watch? as a kid growing up you love the track and field stuff because you do it at school but just chime in on on your stance on the olympics
1:53:46Davis Torgerson:are we counting like basketball and hockey because i feel like for us oh yeah those are our favorite sports you get basketball and i got hockey so let's pick outside of that so other than those okay yeah um
1:54:02Davis Torgerson:probably a boring answer but there's not there's still nothing like the 100 meter spring it's the main event dash whatever it's that's still everyone's locked in for that but let's say that's a given too uh i got i got pretty into women's volleyball like all of them the beach one the canadian girls made it to the finals last time yeah and they were fucking pretty steez they lost unfortunately but um yeah overall i'd say i'm more of a summer olympics guy yeah they're a little more exciting i feel like they have more to offer now they got uh skateboarding obviously but they got that three-on-three basketball tournament you know that you can waste a couple hours watching that I always loved the swimming races those things any kind of race is pretty epic you know now having Story, my son everything is a race his whole life is a race let's race here, let's race there, let's race to eat dinner race to get dressed so it's brought back the love of racing I'm just hyped on the Olympics man I hope Mark does his thing I hope our boy McDavid you know adds another trophy to his uh trophy case that's it man did you ever want to go to the i think to watch yeah no i feel like what would yours gonna be in oh fuck i don't think i have anything where i'm like yeah i'm a beast but what i was gonna say is i think the ones that are so fun are the ones where it's just like the most basic stuff where it's like every human tries this like that's why the racing stuff yeah or the high jump like just the things that are just like seeing the best on the planet those ones blow my mind the most because there's stuff where it's like all right triathlon shit like it gets you know there's some loose stuff that are olympic sports but the stuff that's just like front crawl like even butterflies and stuff like that i'm like yo just give me front front crawl i want to see the fastest swimmer in the world the fastest runner yeah i want to see the highest jumper the longest jumper i love that that is a really cool way to look at it like just a very basic skill who is the best at it like even like the like thing where they throw the javelin or whatever it is like who can throw stick that shit's sick yeah epic thing yeah oh but the most basic ones are the hardest ones yeah to be world class at that's so good so obviously football is over now let's see olympics um eventually this rundown is going to turn into mostly uh hockey and basketball we don't want to leave it too long because the trade deadline just passed in the nba there were some interesting names on the block and some big trades happened some bigger trades didn't happen which maybe we'll see happen in the offseason obviously janice um controls his fate of where he's gonna end up but uh who did get moved and what are some moves that you like to see It was funny because you know me and you and stuff like this happens we tend to look at it from a fantasy lens But this was like a pretty active deadline in terms of some stars got moved and there was actually a bunch I think 28 trades were made But there was almost zero fantasy impact, which was weird Like usually i'm like waiting like oh, who am I gonna pick up because they have a new world?
1:57:53Davis Torgerson:It didn't really change the landscape too much But interesting trades Probably the most shocking was James Harden For Darius Garland They go older but Harden's Better right now Garland's always hurt So I get it but it shortens your window But it makes Donovan Mitchell more likely to resign I'd say but the funny thing about that trade Is Donovan Mitchell's never been to The conference finals In his career he's been to the second round A million times So they have no championship experience and their solution is James Harden, who's potentially the biggest playoff choke artist in the history of modern NBA.
1:58:34Davis Torgerson:So we'll see how that works for them. And then Kawhi's having a resurgence like we haven't seen in years right now. And they're just picking his... The Zubats went to the Pacers, so I feel bad for Kawhi kind of having a crazy year with no real hope. then anthony davis completed the luca cycle so the what if you look on paper at what dallas ended up getting for luca it's just an absolute disgrace i think two first round picks and a couple seconds uh ad goes off to washington they're shutting him down for the year no surprise there and then a little earlier in the season trey young got traded to the wizards as well which kind of confused me the wizards have alex sar uh queshawn george um alal kouwabale like they have a nice young nucleus that they're kind of building and then they're like all right let's bring in these two kind of older let's wreck it past all-stars yeah yeah and see what happens next year we'll see um they don't feel like a contender but they should make the playoffs if they're healthy and maybe be fun for a round or two and then what was the other one yeah the big no trades where ja morant stayed in um memphis and yannis like you said stayed in milwaukee and uh yeah we'll see what pops but fun trade deadline so i know that teams wanted yannis obviously but milwaukee like this is a franchise altering move they're gonna make here it's time to move them he's asking for a move they don't want to end up looking like dallas when they traded luka they want that big haul they want the mikhail bridges type haul um but ja moran what's the deal there did no one want him no one made a serious offer is what i read which is crazy how much his values plummeted and it's crazy like if we just go back in time three or four years let's say four years probably before the gun stuff um he was the face of the franchise and you would guess had the most value out of that third remember it was that really fun team that team was wicked triple j yeah yeah jaw triple j dylan brooks desmond bain i'm forgetting uh i'm forgetting one other dude in the starting five but fun young team and then all of a sudden last summer they trade bane to the magic and they got a bunch of first round picks and you're like okay like they're not fully rebuilding but then this year they just shipped i forgot to mention that they sent triple j to the utah jazz yeah very odd and got picks for him and shit but it's just crazy that jaws value is the most on the team and now they couldn't even move him because no one made a serious offer but they're rebuilding and they got a fuck ton of picks i think they're tied for the most first round picks in the next seven years or something like that so uh we'll see what happens with them i forgot another trade actually to a smaller one but vucevic from the bulls to the celtics who are the third seed right now yeah and they all they did was swap like expiring contracts and from me simons to the bulls so that's interesting too um what about as far as contenders no one really made in toronto yeah the raps they made a trade too who was it was it was uh but did we miss on an opportunity to make a little splash there um yeah the the word was we were looking at uh a couple players not jaw fuck i'm blanking on who we were looking at trading for but we we didn't pull the trigger nothing big happened just looking at the roster now i forget i mean we got ingram in the offseason i think rj barrett's been on the trade block for a minute um i know we made traders can't remember it was like a a lesser a lower grade swap but we're still man this is actually we're the fifth seed right now this is the most excited i've been to watch the raptors in the playoffs um assuming they hold on and make it since 2020 like our our title defense year was i feel like the whole city was still locked in and unfortunately that became the bubble year and we lost to the celtics in game seven and it's a better fate in in that season yeah but uh yeah all right but ever since then it's just been going nowhere fast like i said we'll get more into basketball and hockey as the season progresses massive event took place this last saturday in los angeles california paul's park primitive park psl park call it whatever the hell you want man week one of psl went down um first thoughts on how the event went and then i'm going to get into some some awards we'll hand out for week one um okay first thoughts congrats to everyone involved trying to launch a skateboard league a completely new format is extremely difficult so just congrats to everyone who was a part of that um it looks super pro from at home and for week one of course there's always things you can clean up and stuff and i think it's smart that they're taking this week off and they can key in on some things to improve uh but overall i sat on my couch and was entertained for three plus hours so that was great um yeah how long it was dude i loved it yeah if you look at the stream it was like three and a half hours well damn i was locked in for three and a half hours too then i absolutely love this stuff and i think that you know yeah obviously there's some things some kinks to work out some ways to speed it up but we're gonna see as the weeks progress these teams get a little more competitive because it's still friendly week one you know teams don't need a win yet but we get into week three and four and p rod's maybe oh and two oh and three he ain't gonna be subbing out he's gonna play all four innings and that's where i think the slow playing and the too many changes um i think is a disadvantage you need to keep these guys warmed up locked into the game i say you go with four players you get six but two of them don't dress dnp two players man you don't need to be making these decisions on the go you know you're overthinking this stuff um so three awards we'll do mvp uh we'll power rank what team you think is the best and then we'll do underachiever for the week
2:05:53Davis Torgerson:okay um all right first off i'll go mvp i think jinwu um okay can we just i think he was greatly underestimated or ginwu sorry i think it's ginwu because that's how malto says it and i'm assuming he says it right because he's had him on street league and stuff before so ginwu he landed so many tricks i think a lot of people myself included underestimated him at the draft because when we see him skate and other stuff it's always rails and hubba's and i remember we talked about the switchback heel he did at sls but i'm like i don't know but then when he's breaking out double varial flips and shit like yeah i saw one comment that said he sat there watched the whole thing including the warm-ups and he said he might have seen him fall maybe three times in the span of like five hours so no um he's crazy that team yeah so that he's my mvp and then what did you say uh best team the other two power rank the best team oh best team yeah i'll give that to los santos i think that's who i picked to win it all it's felipe's team they're insane and the crazy part is they miles maybe he was on a trip or something they didn't even have miles silvas available and they laid the smack down so picture that felipe miles and ginwu to start and then you got descenzo and i forget who else did they have like they've got depth for days and then the underachiever i feel like that is it yeah
2:07:38Davis Torgerson:um not to be a dick but i gotta go with uh robert neil just because if i remember correctly i think he only landed one trick so he got them a lot of outs he nollie back when 80'd the double and then after that he came so close but kept slipping out he landed on nollie v heel not only back heel not only big heel uh and switch heel um but i'm sure he'll clean that up they were also missing their captain zach saracino so we'll see next week what lithium's got up their sleeve or next in two weeks
2:08:18it was extremely entertaining man um mvp and uh who's who was my mvp dude i i'm i think i gotta stay with that uh what is it called los tropics what was their team name los santos los santos dude felipe got it like that yeah and just the way you hit that switch flip front board it's like yo that's an instant that's an instant point run whatever you want to call that shit that was incredible um i'm gonna say my favorite team and the team i think can beat those guys is the wolverines um this is the start of chris jocelyn's career arc for me and the crazy thing is he's starting from sody and trick of the year and i don't know i just became a fan on psl night one of jocelyn he's gonna take this shit serious and that's what a league needs you know and i like his i like his team i like what they got going on there with cookie and a couple of oddballs that are gonna be able to do get some letters when you need them and underachiever uh really good guy and i hate to put it on him and I expect more in the weeks to come but Julian Christensen P Rod's number one pick we just needed a little bit more out of him I think he's gonna he's gonna rebound it's tough night on week one but P Rod should have been in that game from the jump too so a little bit on the on the Rod yeah
2:09:55Davis Torgerson:that's what I was gonna say so let's just go match by match real quick yeah anything that comes to mind los santos versus sah was the uh shs was the first match um a little shaky out the gate it was funny the first trick got reviewed defensively so you're like okay what's going on this is gonna be a long night but uh it ended up being a beat down so it wasn't it wasn't the best first game you're like okay this is this is running a little long um but at least we got to understand the format which was key um but any anything any highlights from the first match that you remember i mean this is the clear case of what i'm talking about trying to use six skaters in a four inning match i i just don't think that's the way to win um and los santos they're three completely different skaters and i feel like shs is a lot of similar tricks so i think it was the matchup was not good for shs los santos exposing uh that team yeah i agreed uh massive shout out to paul though he did hit us with what the people wanted and that was a vintage first try beautiful switch tray which got them a point jocelyn slipped out uh But it was kind of like the Super Bowl.
2:11:23Davis Torgerson:It was never in doubt, but it was still entertaining to get us started. Second match of the day. Yeah, and like you said, Paul should have started as a starter. Come on, Paul. Next match, we had Tropics versus your Wolverines. What stood out to you in that matchup?
2:11:46This was a close one. This is the type of match we're looking for. And honestly, I like Los Santos a lot, but I think these are the two best teams in the league. It was a great match. Foy's capable of everything. I didn't know much about Christian Dufresne, but clearly that man on defense, he's going to be an issue. Mixing a little cold. And I don't know who else. They got ice shot, not even there. So they can get the job done. But Jocelyn and his young bulls, they're going to be an issue, man. they gonna be an issue dude christian jordan roman hager mixing jocelyn and cookie and whoever the hell else was there i think the mcclung brothers are on that team geez they deep man that's the
2:12:31Davis Torgerson:deepest team in the league yeah that was a perfect match uh we had our first overtime so the the suspense was there from start to finish of course your boy jocelyn ended it with his fakey trade and uh i love that meme i i fucking fakey trade psl he was losing it uh getting the ot win for his crew but yeah you'll remember this i think the highlight of that matchup for me was um homie uh roman did the back 180 switch 50 and you're like oh ain't no way that's a guaranteed letter but then you're like oh wait they have probably the best rail skater on the planet right now arguably him or niger and of course fucking jamie foy figures it out backs at 180 locks like the heart the fucking toe side and just rides away from that shit that was a perfect match the pace was perfect you know i'm saying i feel like if you could have all the matchups look more like that at that quicker pace um it's gonna be very entertaining and then major shout out to our boy trevor colden he looked amazing out there uh it's comeback season for our boy this is also someone whose career arc is fucking shooting upwards again bruv and the finals d jones i feel like the second match was the match of the day but the finals had the uh it was the name power for sure lithium versus soldiers anything stand out to you in that one yeah there's no depth on lithium that's all there was to that you know brayton hoban he did his thing to keep him alive deshaun you know he had an off day clearly uh he could be better and he will be better robert neal has maybe a bit nervous maybe the spotlight got the best of him uh but niger and the boys man mickey papa is going to be an issue he's going to be a hard out an art deep team you got sinners up there just enjoying the ride dude he's got his green beret on his soldiers jersey this team the soldiers are going to be an issue as well Nigel didn't even have to suit up man that's a problem Mickey Papa he's going to be an issue mark my words big time so yeah the things that stood out to me was the fakie trade Deshaun Jordan on draft day I said he's probably got the best fakie trade skateboarding he does that bolts you think that's a letter no they come back clap you with the perfect fakie trade on defense and then like you said Deshaun Jordan was just a little bit off he gave them two outs on pop shoves on their first go at it so I don't think it was nerves with him but for whatever reason I heard because they're mic'd up i heard him say he had a new board maybe he was a little wobbly uh week one but he'll he'll bounce back but then one thing that i think balto called out on the broadcast was you gotta be smarter with your rail tricks i love the three rail tricks but braden holben bruv you gotta know who you're up against a kick front board fakie yeah you went to fakie but you ain't getting a letter on man like mickey papa like that you you wasted that you gotta at least hit him with a kick front nose grind or one of your other signature moves and level up the difficulty on that and couldn't agree more Sinner was chilling they had a nice lead nothing would have made me happier than them subbing Sinner in the fourth and hitting the people with a massive switch pop shove or something oh
2:16:25but yeah
