Today, I want to talk about two things that I believe are absolutely critical for success in acquisitions. or really in anything meaningful you take on. And those two things are your why and your commitment. And without a clear why, it's easy to quit when things get hard. And trust me, in this business acquisition journey, things will get hard. This week I had a discussion with a mentee in the VIP Mastermind. And he asked me, why do you think that I'm not making as much progress as some of the other people? And I said to him that, I don't think this is important to you.
42And your actions seemed to tell me that, is that whether you do acquisitions, your life is okay. And whether you don't, your life is okay. And then I said to him, you know, one of the things that really struck with me is the story of the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence back in 1776. And they were lawyers, merchants, farmers, men of means mostly, who had a lot to lose and very little to gain personally. They knew full well the penalty for treason, death by hanging, and yet they signed their names to a document that ended with the following words. We mutually pledged to each other our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor.
30And they meant it. If you look at those 56, nine died from wounds or hardships during war. Five were captured, tortured, and killed. Twelve had their homes burned. Seventeen lost everything they owned. But not one defected. Not one went back on their word. And for me, the most powerful example of those 56 is a signer by the name of Abraham Clark. And he was from New Jersey. but both of his sons were captured and sent to the infamous British prison ship called the Jersey, where over 11 ,000 Americans died. Clark's sons were tortured, once starved in solitary confinement. And the British offered to spare his son's lives if Abraham Clark would recant, if he would go back on his pledge and side with the king, but he said no.
28That's commitment. Now, no one is asking you to risk your life or your children's life or fortune like these men did, but make no mistake, acquisitions will test you. You will have sellers who ghost you, professionals who miss deadlines, banks who say no, deals that fall apart, days where nothing seems to work. This is where your why and your commitment matter. When your why is strong enough, whether it's to provide for your family, leave a legacy, or build a financial freedom and empire, you'll keep going. When you are committed, you stop asking, will this work? And start asking, what needs to happen to make this work?
13So here's my challenge to you this week. Revisit your why. Write it down. Make sure it's strong enough to carry you through the inevitable obstacles that you will face. Then ask yourself, are you truly committed? Or are you still half in, half out? Because the mentees who succeed aren't necessarily the smartest or the most connected. They are the most committed. And remember, freedom wasn't free for those men in 1776, and success won't be free for you today. You've got to earn it with consistent, committed action. If you need a step-by-step roadmap to stay on track, the Acquisition Advantage Boot Camp over on BruceWhipple.com is where I teach exactly that.
04And if you want to go further, the VIP mastermind is where we turn individual efforts into a mastermind force multiplier. But think about that. Think about what those signers of the declaration gave up and how strong their commitment was. Very few people would say, you're going to release my two children? okay I'll sign you know and say no to that most people would give in to that but that's how strong at least Abraham Clark's commitment was to the freedom of America and ultimately we live under what they did and how they did it so remember that you're not going to be asked to do anything that hard, but you will be required to be committed, follow the steps, have a reason why it's important, and that will carry you through the inevitable downturns along the way that lead to that success.
