Episode Title
378 - December 26th - The Day Pretenders Quit!
Episode Overview
- Date Released: December 26
- Key Theme: December 26 is framed as a pivotal day for reflection and action in business acquisition, contrasting the tendency to postpone significant decisions until January 1st. Bruce Whipple emphasizes the importance of taking immediate action over waiting for a "better time."
Key Concepts
- December 26 as an Honest Day:
- Marks a time after the holiday distractions.
- Represents a moment of truth regarding one's commitment to business ownership.
- Action vs. Intention:
- Real progress in business acquisition does not stem from merely planning or preparing; it requires action.
- Whipple distinguishes between two groups of individuals:
- Observers: Those who have been preparing but not acting (some for years).
- Acting Practitioners: Individuals who are uncomfortable but have begun to reach out, network, and engage in real acquisition efforts.
Arguments Presented
- Significance of Immediate Action:
- Waiting for January 1st is often a procrastination tactic.
- Genuine change and movement in business happen in moments of discomfort, not during comfortable planning phases.
- Rejection as a Part of the Process:
- Failure and rejection are integral to the journey of business acquisition.
- Successful acquisition practitioners are those willing to endure discomfort and rejection longer than others.
- The Dangers of Silence:
- Silence can be misleading, giving a false sense of patience when it often indicates fear and inaction.
Call to Action
- Challenge for Listeners:
- Listeners are urged to take one uncomfortable action on December 26 rather than waiting for the new year. Suggested actions include:
- Sending an email.
- Making a phone call.
- Asking a difficult question.
- Scheduling a conversation that provokes anxiety.
Key Takeaways
- Ownership Begins with Exposure:
- Engaging with potential sellers, bankers, or brokers is essential for anyone serious about acquisitions.
- The journey starts with outreach, not just planning.
- Act Despite Fear:
- Confidence will not come before action; instead, acting in uncertainty often leads to greater success.
- Perception of Rejection:
- Rejection is not personal; it's solely tied to the offer, not the individual.
Conclusion Bruce Whipple's message on December 26 serves as an empowering reminder for aspiring business owners to break free from analysis paralysis and take proactive steps towards acquisition. The episode emphasizes that true commitment manifests in action, not just intention, inviting listeners to seize the day and start their journey towards ownership without delay.

Christmas is over, the meals are done, the guests are gone, and what's left is left, and what's left is left, and what's left is left, and what's left. because nothing meaningful starts on January 1st. That's just a date people hide behind. Real change starts on days like today. I've heard for decades people say to me, I'm going to get serious in January. January is where people store guilt. December 26th is where reality shows up. If you don't take action when no one is watching, you almost certainly won't suddenly transform because a calendar flipped and a magical January 1st date appeared.
0:52Acquisitions don't reward intention. They reward action and momentum. So here's the truth. There are two types of people who will be listening to this podcast. The first group has been getting ready for years. I recently saw two people had been watching what I was doing, listening to podcasts, videos, emails for six years, but hadn't taken any action. And that first group has been getting ready. They've been reading, watching, planning, consuming. But then there's a second group, and that group is uncomfortable right now. They've sent awkward emails. They've had imperfect conversations. They've been ignored and rejected.
1:40But guess who owns businesses? I've said many times you will fail your way to success in this business acquisition journey. It's not the smartest. It's not the most confident. It's the ones willing to look foolish longer than other people are. Every day you don't act, you are still choosing. Not choosing is choosing comfort, choosing safety, choosing to stay exactly where you are. And silence does something really dangerous. It convinces you that you're being patient when in reality you're being afraid. Let me say this as clearly as I know how to and as plainly. If you have not contacted a seller, a banker, a broker, or a board candidate in the last 30 days, you are not in acquisitions.
2:30You're observing them. Ownership of acquisitions doesn't begin with a deal. It begins with exposure to rejection. So here's the challenge. Today, not January 1st, take one uncomfortable action. Some examples, send one email, make one call, ask one question you've been avoiding, schedule one conversation that scares you. Not to be perfect, but just to take action and be in motion. December 26 separates the serious from the sentimental. If you wait for confidence, you'll wait forever. If you act while uncertain, you'll eventually win more times than those who don't act. So as my mentor said to me a long time ago and tagged me with the moniker, never ask, never get.
3:26Remember that and take action. Nothing terribly bad is going to happen. I've never seen someone make a cold call, send a letter, where it resulted in a disaster. Just haven't. You know, you'll get used to it. And remember, rejection, they do not know you well enough to reject you. They're only rejecting the offer. It's not personal. They don't know you well enough, as I said. So I hope that helps. I hope you don't wait until January 1st. I hope you take some kind of action on today's date, December 26th.
