The Business Acquisition Podcast - Episode 384 Summary

Episode Overview Episode Title: 384 - Information Is Not the Problem. Standards Are. Host: Bruce Whipple Description: In this episode, Bruce Whipple emphasizes that the primary barrier to closing business deals is not a lack of information, but rather personal standards. He discusses why some individuals succeed in business acquisitions, while others do not—despite having access to the same information and strategies.

Key Themes

  • Misconception of Knowledge:
  • Many believe that the lack of information is the reason for not closing deals.
  • In reality, knowledge is often sufficient; the issue lies deeper.
  • Importance of Personal Standards:
  • Success in business acquisitions hinges on personal standards rather than intelligence or preparation.
  • High performers are distinguished by their refusal to tolerate procrastination or discomfort in executing tasks.

Major Takeaways

  • Tolerating Low Standards:
  • Individuals who fail to close deals often tolerate behaviors such as:
  • Delaying calls or follow-ups
  • Over-preparing instead of executing
  • Seeking confidence before taking action
  • These are not merely strategy problems; they are issues of personal standards.
  • Execution vs. Busy Work:
  • High achievers do not negotiate with themselves. They adhere to their commitments regardless of emotional states.
  • There is a stark difference between executing tasks that lead to results and merely staying busy.
  • Raising Acceptable Standards:
  • The key to achieving better results is not to learn more but to elevate the minimum acceptable behaviors from oneself.
  • Bruce stresses the insight that "you do not rise to the level of your goals; you fall to the level of your standards."

Practical Insights

  • Real-Life Application:
  • Reflect on behaviors that are currently being tolerated which might be hindering progress.
  • Commit to specific actions and maintain higher personal standards to facilitate better outcomes in business acquisition.
  • Mindset Shift:
  • Acknowledge that discomfort and action are often intertwined; enduring discomfort is part of growth and achievement.

Conclusion In this episode, Bruce Whipple challenges listeners to reconsider their approach to business acquisitions. Success is not simply a matter of acquiring information but rather establishing and adhering to high personal standards. For those looking to improve their results, the episode serves as a call to action to evaluate and elevate their behavior and commitments.

0:00Most people listening to this podcast already know enough to buy a business. That statement makes people uncomfortable. Because if knowledge is not the problem, something else is, right? I see this constantly with mentees. They know how to source deals. They know how to structure seller finance. They know how to follow up. They know how to build a board. They know how to ask better questions. And yet, nothing closes. So why is that? because success in acquisitions is not driven by information. It's driven by standards. Let me explain what I mean. Two people can have the exact same playbook. One closes deals, the other stays busy.

0:47The difference is not intelligence. It's not access. It's not timing. It is what they tolerate. One person tolerates, I'll do it tomorrow. I didn't feel like calling today. I didn't follow up because I didn't want to bother them. I'll wait until I'm more prepared. The other person simply does not. High performers are not more motivated. They simply have higher personal standards for action. They do not negotiate with themselves. If they say, I will make five calls every weekday, they make the calls whether they feel like it or not. If they say, I will send follow-ups every Friday, they send them even when it feels uncomfortable.

1:34If they say, I will ask for seller finance, they ask even when their voice tightens. That is the difference. Most people try to improve outcomes. Elite business acquirers improve standards. Here is the hard truth. You do not rise to the level of your goals. you fall to the level of your standards. Your standard is what you do when no one is watching, no one is applauding, no deal is guaranteed, no motivation is present. And here is the question I want you to ponder. What behaviors are you currently tolerating that are slowing you down? are those missed calls, delayed follow-ups, over-preparing instead of executing, waiting for confidence instead of acting.

2:28Those are not strategy problems. Those are standard problems. And the fastest way to change results is not to add more information. It is to raise the minimum behavior you will accept from yourself. Because once your standards rise, Results have no choice but to follow. This would be a good podcast to listen to more than once, and it's 100 % true. Maybe a little crazy for a guy who offers courses to say what I just said, but the reality of the situation is just that. You probably, if you've been through the boot camp and the sales summit, you almost certainly know enough. it's taking action that will win the day and so go back listen to this again and then commit to do what you say you're going to do and hold yourself to higher standards and you're going to be surprised what happens

From the publisher

Most people believe the reason they are not closing deals is a lack of information.

They are wrong.

In this episode, I explain why success in business acquisitions is driven by personal standards, not intelligence, strategy, or motivation.

You will learn:

·       Why smart, well-prepared people still fail to close deals

·       The real difference between people who execute and those who stay busy

·       How personal standards quietly determine your results

·       Why raising your minimum acceptable behavior accelerates success faster than learning anything new

This is a direct, no-fluff conversation about execution, discomfort, and personal responsibility.

If you already know what to do but are not seeing results, this episode will challenge you to look at what you are tolerating and what needs to change.

To Your Success,

Bruce
