In short

“Fast and the Curious” rapid-fire Q&A with Joanna Howes, mixing personal preferences and leadership reflections.

Key claims

She bans mobile phones from boardrooms for distraction and lack of presence; she snores and wakes herself up; she finds calm through her dog and eating; she defines success as showing up daily as herself and smiling most of the day; she’s still working on consciously managing emotions (defence/overwhelm) and putting her husband first.

Notable examples

Flashdance “What a Feeling” for instant dancing; hiking a mountain with her dog on a free day; career pivot after an eight-month toxic Melbourne plan and starting her own business; guilty-pleasure bingeing Grey’s Anatomy.

0:00So then, Jo, are you ready on the opposite seat for your fast and the curious?

0:05Joanna Howes:I don't know, this is harder than I realised. Is it? Because I don't know what you're going to ask me. You haven't got a clue of the questions which I've written. No. What song instantly gets you dancing? Flash dance, what a feeling. Nice easy one. Right, what one thing would you ban from boardrooms if you had the power? Mobile phones. Why? Because they're a distraction, they get in the way, people aren't present with each other. Yeah, you can't connect if you've got your mobile phone straight in front of you. Agree. Right, next question. Do you snore? Yes, and I wake myself up snoring. You do, don't you?

0:36And you wake up without even realising you've been asleep. I know. Lovely. Group workshop or one-to-one deep dive?

0:43Joanna Howes:Okay, I would have to say group workshop because then I'm able to impact more people in the same time. If you had a completely free day, no work, no plans, what would you do? Hike up a mountain with a dog. And you. You were waiting for that, weren't you? Unbelievable. If you could have any guest on your podcast, who would you have? anyone? Oh my gosh, I'm going from, I'd like to have Richard Branson. He's someone I do really, really want to meet. I really want to meet. And then Simon Sinek. Because don't be mad, but I do have a bit of a geek crush on him. I'm just kind of sorry. I'm not jealous of that.

1:17If you want to go with geeks, fine. You like Ryan Gosling, that's ridiculous.

1:20Joanna Howes:I love Ryan Gosling. He looks like Rodney from Only Fools and Horses. No, he doesn't. Brad Pitt, I'd let you have. I'll love Brad Pitt as well. No, I'll love Brad Pitt. Right. What would you prefer to be better at? Golf or singing? I thought I'd say singing, but I'm going to go golf. Because I think I could, yeah, I think I'm going to be really good at golf. What's your guilty pleasure TV show? Oh, see, I've got a few now. It used to be Home and Away. But I have given that up for a year now, which I think I've done really well. And I've now moved on to, I'm on Grey's Anatomy. I'm proper like binging Grey's Anatomy.

1:46That's season 15, isn't it?

1:47Joanna Howes:I think it's 16 now. It's bad. Have you ever changed your mind on something big in your career? Well, I suppose the change of my mind on something big is I thought I was going to Melbourne for two to three years. and I had to very, very quickly realise after eight months I had to remove myself because it was a toxic environment. So I had to change my whole plan and I suppose the big thing was starting my own business. That was a massive, that was not on the cards. So that was a very big change is to go right, I'm going out on my own. When stressed, what makes you feel calm? Having a dog around.

2:17Joanna Howes:Eating, I really like to eat. You do. I didn't even know that answer was going to come up. I just really like to eat. It's good, it's honest. I do love having just a little dog sit in my lap I've been playing the dog. Yeah, that keeps me really calm. What famous person would you love to meet? Apart from Vine Gosling and Brad Pitt. Next. London or Melbourne? London. What's your personal definition of success? Is being able to show up every day true to who I am and making most of the day smiling. If you could only speak in rhyme or only sing your sentences, which one would you choose? Sing, because that would drive you crazy, because I can't sing.

2:56It would drive me crazy, you can't sing. mountains or beach mountains put these three in order of preference dogs food your husband

3:04Joanna Howes:food dogs husband because then you'll get a very happy wife and you'll be one third yeah but but really your first because then if you got the food because if i didn't eat you get really you get really you get a really bad food no but then i'll be calm because of the dog so you're going to get a really lovely wife show up what's the one leadership trait you're still working on obviously put my husband first true what's something about you most people don't know other than not liking your husband i do like my husband well i suppose that my happiest as well is when i've got like no makeup on got my slacks on and just acting like a kid at home i suppose people like there's a lot of people you go i wish people could see you now and i look about 12 right what's one leadership trait you're still working on i still very very consciously managing emotions like managing defence or managing overwhelm and things like that so I'm very still consciously learning learning to manage those emotions.

4:00Would you rather be stuck in a lift with a motivational speaker or stand-up comedian?

4:04Joanna Howes:Stand-up comedian. Good answer. Good looks, talent and a great personality. How lucky are you being married to me? What? Am I supposed to say I'm lucky or I'm not lucky? Just how lucky? How lucky am I? I'm the most luckiest girl in the world just not as lucky as dogs and food which could you not cope without more tiramisu or espresso martini if they're both one of them was banished i'd have to have tiramisu it's food i live for food dancing shoes or walking boots walking boots because i could still dance in my walking boots going up the mountain and final question who's been the better podcast host you or me we're both equally good no you've done over 150 i think you've nailed I think you've been brilliant.

4:45Joanna Howes:I think you've done so well. Joanna Howes, that was your Fast and your Curious. Thank you very much. That was a lot of fun. I like that, actually.

Does Ryan Gosling look like Rodney Trotter?

This is a debate I never thought I’d be having.

I love doing The Fast & The Curious with my guests…

But answering the questions myself?
Way harder. And way more fun.

With my husband Kev firing the questions, I had nowhere to hide, just honest, candid, and occasionally ridiculous answers.

This teaser clip is just a taste of what we got into…
