In short

Josh Harris answers “Fast and Curious” CEO questions about leadership myths, hiring, decision-making, advertising industry entry requirements, and personal habits.

Guest backgrounds

Josh Harris is a CEO and father; he says he’s working in advertising without a degree and emphasizes proactive leadership and people-first management.

Key claims

Biggest CEO myth is that CEOs don’t need to “roll up sleeves”; calculated risks beat pure “gut”; hiring requires passing a “train test” (spending an hour on a train to see if you get along); entry-level ad jobs shouldn’t require a degree.

Notable examples

Jurassic Park as a formative film; Oasis ticket hunt; his son Vinnie’s “for fuck’s sake”; replaying the moment he exited a business without hesitation; pineapple on pizza is “hell no.”

0:00Josh, are you ready for your fast and curious?

0:02Josh Harris:Yes. Number one, what's the biggest myth about being a CEO? That you don't have to roll your sleeves up and get stuck in anymore. Would you rather be David Attenborough or Rocky Balboa? Oh, David Attenborough. If you could change one thing about the advertising industry, what would it be? Just one thing. Just one. I know there's probably hundreds. Probably the entry level requirements of what's needed to get a job in the industry. I don't think you need a degree. I'm so with you there. I'm sitting here without a degree. So with you. three words your team would use to describe you? Loud, caring and I want to say patient but I don't think they would say that so I will say impatient.

0:41London or Cheshire?

0:42Josh Harris:London I think my life is here now. What one brand would you love to work with? I would love to work with Under Armour. I absolutely, we're all so sporty, I love sports and it would save me a lot of money if I could get a discount. Your favourite film? Jurassic Park. The first one? Anyone? First one. I've never seen them. I'm not even ashamed to admit that. Are you going to go see the latest one? Probably. It looks mental. I know. I was 12 years old and we went in and it was like the first film that we went to see when we were officially the age you were allowed to see it. And that's it. It stayed with you for life.

1:18Best advice you've ever received?

1:20Josh Harris:Get comfortable being uncomfortable. Worst advice you've ever received? The worst advice I've ever received as a CEO is probably follow your gut. But it's kind of some of the best advice I've been given as well. It's not some of those decisions have big ramifications. And if you're only always going on gut instinct, that's not best practice. So you calculated risks are the best. But the reason I hesitated is because it's also the best advice I've been given. Because sometimes when you feel it, you kind of know. What's your specialist pub quiz subject? random sports facts that nobody cares about what's non-negotiable when hiring a new team member they have to pass the train test what's the train test can i sit on a train with them for an hour and get on with them got it just an hour yeah no i'd probably i'd probably need three hours like i said i'm impatient what's a phrase your son vinnie says that you secretly want to use in a meeting i'm not proud of this but he has once said for fuck's sake and used it in the right context probably listening too much to me pussing around the kitchen how has your 40s been so far great you loving it yeah yeah everything every decade said 21 was not as good as 31 was not as good as 41 and that's the sort of been the rhythm so far okay i'll ask you again at 91 yeah i don't think i think when i was in my 20s there was a lot going on in my life and i'm not quite sure i had My priorities sorted.

2:51Josh Harris:I've definitely matured, I would say. You'd hope. I would hope. The most recent concert you went to? I can't think, but if anybody has Oasis tickets for sale, please can they let me know because I cannot get hold of any. You're using this to get your tickets. Nice. What's something junior talent has taught you recently? Being proactive is everything. What would you rather do, play foxy bingo or have a pint of Koppenberg? I mean, you could do both. you could play foxy bingo and have a pint at copperberg you're just trying to keep lots of people happy two clients two clients very special clients to me you can only lead with one vulnerability or vision i think as a ceo you have to do vision otherwise nobody knows where they're going the best thing about being a dad when he holds my hand on the way to school in the morning i will be devastated when that stops happening it does stop that's a hard thing yeah yeah i don't even know how to ask either just put my hand out and his little hand finds his way.

3:45That's very cute but what's the worst thing about being a dad?

3:47Josh Harris:I think because he's quite like me helping him avoid doing the things that I know I did that weren't great is challenging. You can swap jobs for a day with anyone at Neverland who and why? I would swap jobs with Ashley because her entire ethos is just looking after people and I just love to be able to do that for for a day but in on on the more tangible bits like you know getting everybody so we had our party yesterday she got into the office superior this morning and ordered breakfast for everybody so when they came into the office there was breakfast out for everybody she just she thinks of everything if you could replay one moment from your life what would it be probably the the time that i exited the business that i did and if i could replay it again i wouldn't have hesitated for as long as i did you'd have got out straight away yeah that's really good advice for anyone listening pineapple on pizza hell yeah or hell no?

4:42Josh Harris:No, absolutely not. Hell yeah. I thought we could be friends, Josh. I'm not sure. What's the part of you that shows up both at home and at work? I wear my heart on my sleeves. And the last one, you're invisible for a day. What would you do? I would just find somewhere to sit in an incredibly crowded area and just watch. I'd go to Trafalgar Square and I'd sit by the fountain and I'd just watch. That's so nice. You just like people watching? Yeah, love it. I'm with you on that. My husband doesn't like the fact that I just sit and people watch. so we could do this one together. I'll make up little stories about people, give them names, wondering where they're going to, what they're doing.

5:15I love it. Thank you so much. That is your Fast and the Curious.

5:18Josh Harris:Thank you. Thank you.
