0:25Welcome to At the Table with the Dice Tower, a podcast about games and the people who play them. On today's episode, Tom and I are back from the Dice Tower cruise with tales of sun, snow, and board games. Plus, we dive into the mailbag and we surface with a new batch of roses, thorns, and hula hoops. I'm Eric Sommerer. I'm Julia Hearn. And I guess I'm not on this episode. No, you get to ask questions. Ooh, all right. And I'm Tom Vassell. I think I'm on the episode. So, anyhow. Hey, but you know what? But one thing we will all be at together is Dice Tower West in Las Vegas. Not only will we be there, you should come to Dice Tower West because Grant Lyon is going to be doing his board game comedy show on Friday night.
1:09Ooh, funny stuff. Yeah. And we'll be doing shows too, so come by and see those. There's a trick-taking mini-con and a library, it says here, of over 4 ,600 games. and I have made sure that the hottest games have got into that, something we'll talk about later. So, yeah, Dice Tower West, Dice Tower East is in July and we got a couple things we're doing differently this year. If you stay at the resort itself, if you stay at the Caribe Royale, you will be getting a hotel swag bag and you don't have to pay resort fees. So we're going to have some goodies there, a custom Dice Tower East canvas bag, door hanger, and coupons for the exhibit hall.
1:51Wow. And we're excited about our sponsors. All Play is bringing partnership games, and Arcane Wonders will be there with Dice Tower Essentials. And I'm working on hot games even now, folks. It's amazing how hot games works, how they ebb and flow. How hot they can be. Yeah, but I go through the library. You got to use tongs to carry them around. And I look at the games we have two copies of, and after a while, I'm like, sad day. They're now going down to a single copy. If that. Well, I don't think I've ever taken two copies down to zero. Okay. If it was hot enough to have two copies, it's going to be hot for, I mean, it's at least going to be played for years.
2:30Somebody's still going to want to play it. One hopes. I have a theory that if there's a game that only one person likes or a couple people like, they will eventually bring it at themselves anyway. Ah, interesting theory. Well, I'm going to be pulling a game from the library because Eric never plays it. What is it? It's Merchants of Venus. It's Merchant of Venus, yeah. Every time I bring my travel copy and teach it, I taught it twice on the cruise. Tom goes and frowns at me. He's like, well, you know, this is in the library. I'm like, yes, but it fits better on this table because the version you've got is huge.
3:04And Eric's the only one who plays it. So I'm like, well, why do I have it? There's a pocket Merchant of Venice? There's the smaller, the Avalon Hill original edition is, you know, a bookcase sized box. and it's a much smaller board than the Fantasy Flight large deluxe thing. Oh, you have the original. I do. Got it. I do. And it's not even really that upgraded. He upgraded the coins. You know, that's actually one place I'm quite jealous of you, Eric. Those coins that you got, those metallic futuristic coins. Yeah. Well, that company went out of business. I don't know where I can get those coins.
3:42It was Minion Games who made them. It was. And yeah, I haven't found anything comparable and especially not the price that I got. They were doing it as part of another Kickstarter for one of their games. And the Merchant of Venus fans got wind of it and said, yeah, let's get these for Merchant of Venus. And I did. I think I maybe paid$70 for my entire set of coins, which is way cheap for that sort of thing, especially now. And yeah, everybody says, hey, where did you get those? I said, you can't get them now. Sorry. I think he says it like, you wouldn't even be able to know where to find these.
4:16You wouldn't know. You had to be there. That sounds exactly like Eric. Yes, that's just pretty much what I do the entire time. Well, Eric came down for a quote unquote week of gaming. It turned into a week and a half. It did. That's like people's dreams, Eric. I know. In most cases, I had a lovely time spending extra time in Florida, But it's all the stuff that I'm missing and having my family text me pictures of all the snow and like, thanks, dad. We had to deal with this. That had my stress level up a little bit. We'll get there, though. I didn't know I could do that. You're like in the house.
4:59You're like, I'm out of state. Thanks, Eric. I didn't know you were out. I had to deal with this. Oh, now I'm going to get messages from everyone? No, that'll be good. Yes. Not just my family. So Eric and I are talking about the Dice Tower Cruise, which just happened. We left Miami, Florida, and went to three islands. We went to the Nassau. We went to St. Martin and St. Thomas. Yes. And we played games in the cruise. If you've not heard of the cruise, you really should consider coming in the future. We'll be opening up tickets to next year. Next year is an exciting cruise because next year is the 10th anniversary.
5:38Ooh, fireworks. I don't think so, but we will be going on the Icon of the Seas. It's just such an amazing ship and some really fun things. But I don't want to get too caught up in the future just letting you know that April will be opening up tickets for that. But we've been doing this for a while now. And so there's a couple of things that are guaranteed. One is something is going to get destroyed in the library. We talked about this last episode. but there was what the forklifts crushed some boxes as they moved things on the ship. Yeah, I felt I finally saw the damage. It's not so bad, although I didn't tell the cruise line that because they really did beat up the boxes.
6:22It was Forbidden Stars, Eldritch Horror, and Arkham Horror. So Cthulhu was angry somewhere. Wow. Rising from the depths. and those games don't even get played that much but I mean Forbidden Stars in particular is a pretty pricey game and the shelves were beat up and it's just it's the one convention we don't have control over that there's multiple people getting it but it did get all in there and good news no one took the inside of a game this year in fact we didn't lose any games did we find the one we were missing? there was one that we thought just fell behind the shelf it was just in the wrong spot someone put it with the children's games which was accurate This was Scout.
7:02I'm kidding, Scout fan. Yeah, so, no, we got everything back, and lots and lots of games got played. So, Eric got there in time for the pre-cruise party, which is really kind of a misnomer because it's more of a, it's a tremor. I mean, there's some space at the pre-cruise hotel, and there are a good number of people there. I what surprised me about this priest cruise event is that I saw at least one person who had brought games that they were not intending to bring on the ship. They were local enough. They drove and and they're like, yeah, I'm going to play these giant games here. And then I'm not bringing these because they're going to be in the library when we get to the ship.
7:45But I don't want to be without a giant game at a gaming event. So they were playing that. And then there was another group that met up with locals that weren't coming on the cruise. and they're like, yeah, we're going to play a quick game with these guys and we get to see them briefly before we go off on a ship, which to me feels like this is becoming more of a thing. Yeah, that I did not run into. But I call it a tremor because people are playing games, but they are like literally quivering with excitement, you know, because tomorrow is the cruise. And so there's not as much partying going by.
8:15Everyone's like, tomorrow, tomorrow. I'm like, yeah, yeah. But there's also people like, it cracks me up. Some people are talking and like playing card games and kind of waiting. Other people are like, I've already set up Battlestar Galactica with all the expansions. Not a joke. Actually happened. Or I'm playing. I saw Speakeasy getting played. I was like, really? Already? That's one of those. That's the one that brought it in their car. And I felt something that made me feel very happy, sort of, is on the cruise, I saw some people playing Speakeasy. And they had just punched it out. And I said, wait a minute.
8:51Is that your copy of Speakeasy? And they said, yeah, yeah. Well, see, we went on another convention. They didn't tell me what it was and I didn't ask. And they said they didn't have any games. So we were unsure. So we dragged along this huge game just in case you didn't have it. But you did have it. So now we know for the future. And I was like, oh, that's nice. I'm glad that they don't have to bring it next time. I mean, you can, but that's a giant game to drag around. It is. That's half a suitcase, right? Well, speaking of that, it was pretty funny. At the end of the cruise, we gave out several copies of Galactic Cruise.
9:25And people won games. So rather than just giving them a game, you could come up to the table to pick a game. And I would say of the first – there was, I think, eight copies of Galactic Cruise. Ten? And of the first ten people, only four of those copies were taken. And that's always one of those – I'm sure there was some very serious soul searching of like, how much space do we have? How many things did we buy for knickknacks? It's a large game. Can I dump anything and leave it here before we go? I'm sure. I would have had trouble. I was sort of packed to within an inch of my life as far as what was checked and what was carry on.
10:08And I would have had difficulty if I had Galactic Cruise and had to get it back. you know if you left merchant venus at home you would have some extra space it's in the library comparable in size take a note true story we got galactic cruise at dice tower east because robert had a truck to drive home with all you know the setup for his booth so that is why we got it when we got it this is starting to make me happier about gen con because driving that van home afterwards is so easy. I'm like, throw the stuff in the van as opposed to the S and you're like, all right, who does not yet take it a suitcase?
10:45Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. All right. So it's now time for the annual. I don't think either of you watched my video. I have not watched the video. I was being much more ambiguous. I didn't say what video. I just said you don't watch the videos. So anyway, you haven't watched the video. The answer is still yes. I have not watched it. So what games do you think were checked out the most? You each get to pick one and whoever picks higher gets a point. Oh, boy. I mean, I'll let Julie go first because I have the advantage of seeing at least things. Yeah. Eric was on the cruise. That's true. Yeah. It's not an advantage because I have no baseline of where to go with this.
11:31No, you go first. Okay. Let's go for the easy one. I think Hot Streak was one of the top games checked out. Julie, you can just pass. Because that was the number one. It was number one. That was the number one. Well, good job. There were two copies in the library, and it was short and simple, and it's one that probably got checked out a lot. 48 times. Woo! All right. Now do a real guess, Eric. All right. Well, I'm going to guess the one that was always out whenever I went looking for it, and that's Eternal Dex. All right, Julie?
12:09This is so unfair to Julie because Eric was there. This is so unfair. I agree. Okay, I'm going to give Julie clues. This is a cooperative game that has become more popular in the two years since it was released. You're killing me, Smalls. This is going to be such an awkward round. Deduction. Boom. And I believe I have won this every time we've played it up until this point. Just so we're clear. By the way, Eric made the show notes. He put this in here knowing he had a huge advantage. Yeah. I had to win somehow. Well, congratulations in advance. the goal was not to make Julie unhappy that she wasn't there I you know it's not sounding like it Eric I'm looking up Merchant of Venus how many times that was checked out mentally retroactively sending you pictures and saying it's all your fault I had to clean it up excellent very very cool I think Tom's talking about Bomb Busters those were number 2 and 3 actually so Bomb Busters was 2 and Eternal Dex was 3 Yep.
13:25In fact, I just yesterday ordered new pieces for Bomb Buster because it's so beat up. It's so good. It's a great game. But those tiles, oh, man. I played Bomb Busters a couple times on the cruise with the library copy. And they're well-loved tiles. They're starting to disintegrate. They're so well-loved. Well, I found a place on Etsy that makes acrylic Bomb Buster tiles. That's what I was going to ask. There you go. Was it time to upgrade? And the answer is yes. I actually saw some 3D printed racks for Bomb Busters as well that have like numbers on them so that you don't have that. The third one from the right, you can just point and say, well, the number four tile on your rack is a three.
14:09I think they're lettered. Lettered. The A tile is a three. Yeah, I think that helps a lot. I hope. So I bought these acrylic tiles. They say they're the same thickness as the original tiles, and they have rounded corners. I'm like, okay, that's all good. Okay, no stabbing. And then I bought racks that say they hold the original tiles. So hopefully these two things will work together. Okay. Anyway, the game's over. Julie won by the fact that Eric used steroids. So the next one on the list, and this one really surprised me, was Seven Wonders Dice. Oh, wow. Okay. Again, quick. Not surprised. I mean, it's not like I think it's a bad game.
14:51It's a fine game. I just didn't expect it to be that high. Yeah. Yeah. Then we have another game where the cards were already all beat up. Origin Story, a trick-taking game from Stonemaier Games. That didn't take long. And then let's tell you the story of a man who doctors told him that if he came on the cruise, it would add two to three months to his convalescence time. And he said, worth it. And I was like, what? And so he was supposed to sit, but he hobbled around the ship with a cane. The entire cruise, like a maniac, teaching his new game, Raz. Yes. That was the... Oh, yeah. Nahir Shah injured his foot and was told not to come on the cruise.
15:33And he came anyway. Yeah, no, that 100 % checks out. It really does. I was like, Nahir, come on now. And also, okay, so you did come on a cruise. Stay here and just rest. I'll bring you a game. He's like, I'll be fine. I will say, I will be teaching Ross at the end of this month, February, at the convention at Ravenwood Castle. Ravenwood Castle. Yeah. So they have a small convention in the winter every year. And since everybody at Arcane Wonders is going to other conventions, I will be teaching. So I will be actually playing Ross quite a bit. If you get to go to the castle, that's kind of cool.
16:20Oh, yeah. I'm not mad about it. That's cool. Danielle, who usually runs games for me at Van Ryder, has agreed to come and we are going to play all the Arcade Wonders games. Are you teaching Ross in the ballroom of the castle? Because that would be appropriate. I don't know where they're going. They assign you. But yes, size-wise, you need the giant tables. There's a little pub that has the little cafe tables. And I'm sure we'll do like Ito and Cat and Tower and all of that down there. But Ross and Ley Lines definitely will be in the main dining room hall. For those who may not have heard of this game, it's spelled R-A-A-S, Ross, A Dance of Love.
17:01Mahir is a designer. It's about Indian dancing. It is very thematic. And it's really pretty now. The new version, I've seen a near final version now. and it will also be at Dice Tower West is really gorgeous. Yeah, it's got these gear wheels that turn and spin and it's pretty. Yeah. Then after that, Magical Athlete was played a lot. CMYK had Hot Streak and Magical Athlete being played everywhere. Then shockingly, I thought shockingly, Moon Colony Bloodbath was played quite a bit. So that was the one that until you started giving me clues that I was going to throw out there because I've heard a lot of talk about it.
17:38Yeah, it's doing really well. There were a lot of people playing that one. I got dragged into a game. I thought I was leaving the ship and they were playing Moon Colony Bloodbath and I got sucked into it. So yeah, it happened a lot. Wait, I'm confused by your statements there. Like you were getting off the ship to go home and someone's like, no, play Moon Colony Bloodbath? I was going to get off the ship to go on an excursion at one of the ports, and I just sort of wandered into the room to see what was going on. And they were setting up Moon Colony Bloodbath, and I said, oh, I can't just walk away from this.
18:09And I had to play, and I almost missed my tour. What? You have a problem, Eric. Priorities. I got to the tour. It's fine. I said almost. That gives me stress just thinking about almost missing a tour. I was like, come on, die already. Come on, lose your population. I got somewhere to be. Also, Take Time. That's a new cooperative card game that's doing really well. And Fate of the Fellowship and Tenby, of all things, got played. Tenby. So I'm surprised that Fate of the Fellowship, the big pandemic variant, was higher than either of the trick-taking games. So they didn't get played as much as I thought, Eric, even though the cards do not give me that.
18:52But each of those was played, I believe, it was nine times for one and eight times for the other. But I suspect that people sat down and played them for three hours straight. That's true. Because when you play, you just start playing through this scenario after scenario after scenario. And it is a little addicting when you do that. Right. You don't just play one scenario and say, okay, well, that was exciting. That was one. That was enough for me. You absolutely do one more. Like one more episode when you're watching a series. Yes. The series. Are you still playing? Yes. Ooh, you guys have just given me an idea for a top 10 list.
19:27Bingeable games. Ooh. That is a good top 10. Once you pop, you can't stop. Pop and lock. So, I mean, there were some big games that didn't make the top 10. SETI was played a lot. TEND was played a lot. Old King's Crown, Galactic Cruise, Recall. So, yeah, it was just a ton of different games were played. I think we had, I don't remember, there was just shy of a thousand different games being played. Whew. It was a good mix, too. I saw a lot of, you know, the new hotness, of course, hits the table a lot, but there were a lot of classics that hit the table. And that sort of leads into the next thing I wanted to talk about with our yellow flag system where you're teaching games.
20:15We have green flags and yellow flags. when you're looking for a player at a table, you put up a green flag. And if you don't know what you're doing with a game, you put up a yellow flag and hope that somebody walks by knowing what they're doing and can teach you through it rather than pouring over the rule book. And there was one moment that I was ready. I'd finished a big game. I was hungry, ready to go get some food and spotted a yellow flag across the table. And it was Fast Sloths, the Freedom and Freeze game. And I was like, oh, I have to go over and get them started with that one. And so I did that, spun around, you know, watched maybe a turn or two so I made sure they knew what they were doing, and then said, all right, I'm going to go get food now.
20:56I turned around. They were setting up Power Grid across the room with a yellow flag. So, okay, now I have to go over there and check that one out. And then I think spotted Bomb Busters as well. And I didn't get to go to lunch for a little while, but I did get to teach a lot of people some of my favorite games. You are reinforcing my earlier statement. I was going to say, did your teaching get edgy? All right, people. I only have 10 minutes. The hangry teacher. You're keeping me from my lunch. No, I enjoyed getting people started with these games. If they're going to set it up and it's one of my favorites, I want to make sure they're doing it right.
21:35Isn't it true, though, that one of the best feelings in the world is teaching people a game and then they love it? Yeah. Yes. I that to me is I think more fun than discovering a new game myself I would agree especially if it's an older one it's the equivalent of watching a movie with someone and instead of watching a movie I'm watching their reactions yes yeah yeah yeah so one thing that happened when we were there so we went to different islands we went to St. Martin which is very very beautiful and we went to St. Thomas which is not quite as much but St. Thomas did have a board game store on it so And they knew we were coming.
22:13Yeah, because Brian on the pre-cruise had gone there, found it, and the guy's like, I'm going to have a game day. And so I told everybody and I thought maybe a few people will go. It was probably just shy of 100 people who went at some point to this game store. You had to get a taxi because I went to the guy at the taxi stand. I said, I'm going to this game store. He's like, everybody is. I was like, oh, well, cool. Good. One more, please. It's a game store that was in a surf shop. Eric, did you go? I didn't go. I was on a tour and we got back a little late. I didn't want to risk not getting back on the ship.
22:49Yeah, well, maybe you wouldn't have got back so late if you had started on time. Maybe.
22:56Moon colony bloodbath's got a moon colony bloodbath. So this was like a big surf store. It's like in a warehouse somewhere. They just dropped us off in a bunch of front of warehouses. I'm like, I hope this is legit. But when we got there, there was a guy, and I apologize, I don't remember the name of the island. They're on these tall stilts. Oh. And they were like one of those people bringing folks in. I forget what it's called. But they were there, and there was some people, and I went up, and someone was running a role-playing scenario that some people from the crews that sat down were playing.
23:32that was about, as I listened to it, I think they were on St. Thomas in the role-playing game. It sounded a little Inception-ish. Yep, yep, yep. Oh, I love it. So she was like, yeah, it's an hour role-playing game do you want to play? And I was like, I don't really have that much time, but the people who played it, I asked them later and they said it was a lot of fun, so that was good. So she was doing that and they had a really good selection of games. It wasn't huge. It was a very small room that was filled with games, but it was, there was a lot of new games there a lot of very popular games there um i did have a fun interaction with one of the employees was very enthusiastic came and he's like do you do you like board games i was like i do yes he's like what's your favorite games i said well cosmic encounter arc nova and he's like oh arc nova i heard of that one it's oh it's right over here he's like this is anyway he's like i'm trying to get a grasp on what you might like i was like well I have a whole channel if you want to watch that to see what I like.
24:32But it was good. He was very pleasant, very nice. And the people who ran it, I guess we're glad lots of people came by and played games. So that was a neat thing because it's such a rarity. We're not going to find many board game stores in the Caribbean. Right. Well, I mean, knowing that we were coming and doing something special as a special event, even though it wasn't an official event, a lot of people went and knew what was happening and made a special excursion just to visit this store. That's pretty neat. Yeah. Well, overall, we had a good time, and then the cruise was over, and everyone went home.
25:06I was in bed that night. Ugh. Uh-huh. So, yeah, so the panic started to spread, like, Wednesday or Thursday. I think the weather models of this huge snowstorm that was hitting a big swath of the states happened to solidify, and so the forecasts went up, And to the point where the airlines started saying, yeah, you might want to reschedule your flights. And so there was this sort of collective panic in the gaming room as people are looking at their phones and going, oh, I need to reschedule this. And Andrew, our social media manager, and I are in Boston and Connecticut. So we had similar totals that we were working through.
25:45And I know Mike in Indianapolis was also worried about his flight. So we had already moved things a little bit one day later. Like, yeah, 24 hours, they'll have everything cleared. No problem. It was not no problem. So we waited a day after getting off the ship and stayed with our friend Jason, the cruise director. He continued his stellar service into overtime, basically, and played some games and just had a nice quiet Sunday. And then Monday, headed out to catch our flights, and things were not going well in the Miami airport. Oh, no. You know, delay, delay, delay, delay. And that just became cancel, cancel, cancel, cancel.
Read the full transcript
26:25Andrew's flight was canceled on the way to the airport. I thought I was getting on a plane until about five minutes before I wasn't. And turned out they were missing a flight attendant that I thought was just across the airport and would be here in 15 minutes. But no, they were missing one to be assigned to the flight in the computer system, which was not going to go well. So that got canceled. I got pushed to Wednesday. So stayed an extra couple days, which meant we got to take a road trip to Dice Tower HQ. And we just sort of broke into a normal workday at the Dice Tower and got to see how the sausage is made.
27:01And it made it was. And got to hang out and play some extra games and just generally check everybody out. I should have probably put you in a video when you were here. I didn't even think of that. We were really busy. I did get into an all-play promotional video. Chris snagged me and did a nice little bit about voiceovers. So, yeah, I got put to work a little bit. But we did have a game night that night, and I got sucked up in a game, which I'll talk about later. I did hear you guys, like, screaming at the table next to me, Aaron. What was the party game you were playing? That was – I think that's an all-play upcoming.
27:41It is called Jibber Jabble. Jibber jabber. Jibber, the jabble, I believe, is the second word, which makes it fun to look for on Board Game Geek. It is, you're trying to spell out clues for the one guesser in the room. And so you've been given a category and a particular word, and you're trying to give clues for that specific word. Kind of like just one, except you are spelling the word letter by letter as you go around the table with absolutely no discussion amongst the team that is trying to spell the word. So what happens is somebody, you know, is trying to spell balloon, and they say, B, and then the next person doesn't know that that's what the first person thinks they're doing, and they go, oh, and then everybody panics as they try and figure out what the second person now thinks they're spelling.
28:33And it involved a lot of screaming from Jason, who was coming up with what he thought were amazing clues that no one wanted to go along with, and then he started yelling at the people who didn't spell things properly. It was a lot of yelling. It was. At some point, the entire room is just staring at us. I'm like, okay, guys, calm down, please. Anyway, it just sounded like it was fun. Anyway, then they went home, and Eric got in a plane, and life went back to normal, except for the fact that that jerk Punxsutawney Phil. I could have told you he was going to go for six more weeks of winter. I was like, that was the least surprising result ever.
29:17Yeah, we know, Phil. We know. Get back in the hole. Oh, wow. Hey, if you're feeling cold, folks, come to Dice Tower West. It will hopefully be warm by then. I hope so. I just hope my flight goes well. That's all. I just remember last – well, so last year – I believe we're flying this year. Last year we drove the truck and there was the snowstorm in the Rockies over Colorado. Oh, boy. But not, we're not going to think about that. Not this year. No. I will say one thing. My one contribution is thank you to the Drakes for sending me all the lovely footage of the karaoke that took place. Oh, yes. So there was a, this is where there was a donation request list, right?
30:02If you sing certain songs at karaoke, we will donate money to the Jack Fassel Memorial Fund. Yes. and money was raised. But also, I have footage. So blackmail fodder? No. Maybe. No. Anyway, it was a good time from what I could tell. Nobody was hurt. Money was raised. And it was the one moment that I felt like I was in the loop. You're participating. I was participating. Pulling strings from afar, perhaps. Maybe. All righty. Well, that's enough about the cruise. Let's jump to a question. Questions. Questions. Questions. Questions. All right. So we have a listener question saying there have been many times that they've hosted get-togethers with friends.
31:01And at some point, everyone decides they want to play a game, hopefully. Yeah. We usually, they usually play a party game, sometimes later strategy games. They take the game out, set it up, take time to teach it. And their problem is while they're playing the game, people stop and are social and they break off into conversation and everybody's having a fun time. But they are sitting there waiting for the next person to take their turn. and they don't want to be a killjoy and stop people from talking and enjoying themselves but they're not sure what to do because they want to keep the game on the rails so what are our thoughts on a situation like this what would you do you're having too much fun stop it yeah this is a tricky situation though right because you're in that situation where you everyone's having a good time and you kind of don't want it but at the same time it's like can we focus a bit this is this is this a hard call.
31:59So I'll pass it off to the two people wiser than me. At the top they're saying get together, not game now. So if it's a get together, you gotta let people get together as they will. You gotta be a little looser, I think, with the rules. I get it too, because if somebody is running the game, you're the one that's probably taught it and told everybody the rules and you're trying to keep it moving, there is some sort of responsibility there where you need to keep it together. Otherwise, it will just fall apart. If you're going to get to the end of the game, somebody's going to have to steer this ship.
32:35Right. I guess for you, the point is getting to the end of the game. For everybody there, the point is to have a good time. So letting go of a lot of hubris when I'm at a family gathering of – sometimes games fall off the rails. Now, I have over the years cultivated nieces and nephews to be gamers like myself who won't allow that. And I don't have to be the one doing that, the timekeeper and the let's move it along people because they are. And that is so my advice is play the long game. Teach the young ones. That's my advice. No, that's good. I like it. I think if you are you're talking about this specific instance, you are in this situation.
33:19you're playing, I don't know, say just one and everybody's laughing about the last round and then they get to talking about a story about some of the words that they used and how that relates to a family trip everybody took and memories start flying back and forth. Everybody's having fun. You don't want to stop that. You almost need to recruit someone else in the out group, not you who's trying to get the game on the rails, but maybe make eye contact with the niece or nephew across the table and sort of wait for them to notice that you're patiently waiting to continue the game and then maybe recruit one of them.
33:53Like, obviously, the gamer in the room is going to want to keep the game going, nerd. But if you get somebody else in the group that has been laughing and joking to say, okay, everybody, all right, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Julie really wants to keep this game going. So let's, round two, that you need to recruit someone else. You need an assistant in the room. Also, maybe, so you're saying lighter strategy games, maybe lighter strategy for, It depends on the group. Like if you know it's a group that's going to devolve into just chatting and catching up and stuff, you play something like Ido where each question, you can end the game at the end of the question.
34:28Yeah, you can just stop. You don't have to play until you've all failed. In fact, sometimes when you fail the round, that's what perpetuates. No, no, we got to go until we win. And it perpetuates the game. so also choosing the game you play if if this is a large crowd who's not really wanting to even if it's a lighter strategy game and and at the end of each round it could just that could be the end of the game maybe that's just the way to go yeah yeah yeah all right let me modify this question a bit here yeah what if it is so i think this is an easy question to answer when we say everyone's kind of just chilling having a good time and sure just go with the group or get your your uh trained nieces and nephews to handle it um but what if it is one person who is not they're not being bad or anything but they're just very social and they're talking and they're the ones like having a great time they're not in any rush to play the game they're getting up and eating and moving around and talking and it's their turn they're like oh yeah and they come sit back down how do you deal with that person who again is not i'm going to be clear i don't feel like they're being deliberately jerky or bad they're just more interested in socializing than right playing the game uh it depends again that depends on the game if it's still a light strategy game there's still only a finite amount of time before the game is over uh i've had because and so if i'm in a social setting regardless i tend to or i yeah teacher julie comes out a little bit where you preemptively say, okay, so your turn's coming up.
36:06Yeah, you're next. You're next. And I, yeah, I've done that before. And try to make it as light as possible. And not, and not judgy. But to help them along, to get, you know, so we're not there for seven minutes before. Oh, wait, whose turn is it? It's yours. It's still yours. So there's that. but if it's a it depends on the game because if it was something and i have had that where uh playing a longer substantially longer game where somebody was wants wanted to play it just was somebody who could not sit still and focusing was a challenge and so they were doing a bunch of other things in their kitchen and so kept waiting kept waiting And I didn't say anything during the game.
36:57I did say something afterwards where I'm like, hi, you are lovely. I enjoy you tremendously. I cannot play a game with you that is longer than 45 minutes because you struggle with the focusing and I am somebody who doesn't handle that well. So it's not a good fit for us to play something longer than that. I want to continue playing games with you. Please make sure from now on they are, you know, a 30-minute game. That would be delightful. And I was just very straightforward and they were mortified. I was like, don't, I'm not saying this to make you feel bad. I'm saying this so that I don't get frustrated and then impassive aggressive going forward.
37:33And I just was very direct about it because they were a lovely person and I do enjoy their company. They just, you know, things like ADHD are very real and, you know, you do what you can. Yeah, I think game choice is a big factor here. It's hard when you're already in the situation. Like, we've decided to pull out Ticket to Ride, and you've got a player who's just not really engaging with the game and is, you know, wandering off, and it gets to their turn, and they're not doing anything. If this was a lighter party game, there might be a way that you could just run the round without them. Like, if everybody else is waiting, and you could just, you know, especially if it's a team-based something, they're just out for this round.
38:14That's fine. We'll figure out how to play Catchphrase without that particular team member for a round. And that's an easy way to, if you're picking the right game, one that can be dropped in and out of easily, that's if you know this is going to happen. It's hard when you're in it, though. Yeah. All righty. Well, let's talk about some games. We should. Yeah.
38:38They say that every rose has its thorn. But not every rose has a hula hoop. Julie, what's a game that you played recently and loved slash possibly didn't love? because i don't know uh so i played like i was with my parents for the past week so i will say i played a lot of trick-taking games card games yeah my mother has joined the bridge club in her community and is getting very competitive uh and so we we spent a lot of time talking about bridge reading books about bridge strategies um i it's not for everyone but it certainly was really fun to see uh some taking it to a competitive level how many people were very interested in her neighborhood community to play it so that is i don't know if that's necessarily like to say i haven't played a ton of board games because i was i was there and that's that's where their interests lie however before that uh i played chisogi anime studio tycoon and that was a hula hoop because so it is a game that is published in japan now we've talked about you know a couple years ago we talked about when going to tokyo game fair and one of the things the takeaway that I think I mostly find is that most of the games there are tiny little pocket cute games that are, you know, mostly abstract movement, very light.
40:15This is not. So it was a hula hoop, because this is a worker placement. I had to dig down and think hard strategy wise kind of game. Loved it. But you are a struggling anime studio. And you have four rounds, each round being a year, and you start, you've taken money, you've loaned money, maybe it's from the bank, maybe Aunt Jean left you a small allotment because she believes she thinks you're a good kid. I you have, you're behind, you owe people money from the start, and you are trying to have a feature film come out every year. So you start with four Dead Inside staff cards. That's literally what they're called.
41:12Yes, yes, they've been. I do love that. The writer, the artist, the producer, and the director. You have six studio action tokens. So you can increase your staff by two over the course of the time, but that's the maximum. And then you have your resources. So what you're trying to do on your turn, like there's three phases. There's production, which is the main one. And in that, you're placing your workers on the various locations. Now, most of them can only go to one or two spaces. So, you know, your artist is going to go to the animate or, you know, area where they are creating art or doing layout.
42:01You can send the manager to any one place, but you're mostly at the start, probably going to want to start them at hire or upgrade, where you will spend money to hire more staff or to, I guess, give professional development and therapy to your dead inside workers so that then they become genki or energetic. And each of those cards have special abilities and are giving you extra benefits. Hey, future Eric here. You know, I correct Tom's pronunciation all the time and I think it's only fair that I jump in. And also my college Japanese instructor would really not be happy with me if I didn't jump in and say it's genki.
42:40Genki desu ka for energetic. You know, okay, are you good? Genki is the Japanese word. Sorry, Julie. So each of the locations you have to choose. So there's, and as they fill up, if somebody else has already placed a character there, you might, a worker there, you will probably still be able to, but it's going to cost you extra money because now you're trying to break into a market that's already been used. Then you have your movie release. So part of the thing that you're also trying to do while you're doing that is you're trying to get a beginning, middle, and end of your script. And they can be different.
43:22The different colors denote different types of themes. So it could be romantic. It could be action thriller. It could be horror. And they have different ones, and they will score differently. So if what is hot right now is out, and each year one falls off and the next one slides in, So you're trying to hopefully get one of the thematically what is hot and new, hot new games type of thing so that when you fill out your little puzzle pieces of beginning, middle and end of script, they have the themes that are just really in and trending right now. The other ways that you can get points at the end of round, if you put out a release so you get the popularity, you can get rewards based on your reputation and money.
44:12um you can also level up and get merchandising and if you have merchandising then you get more income and like i said money is tight because if not because you have to pay your staff um at the end of each round and um dead inside staff costs one coin the gen key staff costs two um and if you can't you have to take on more debt and of course the more debt you have the less points of your end game scoring points you lose points for those as well at the end of the game so So it was unexpected, completely unexpected playing it. Had a great time. Definitely rewards itself playing it more than once.
44:51That first time you're like, wait, what? Honestly, and I had fun, but I just, I was like, I, it was more moving part. And again, partially because I wasn't anticipating it. But the second time around, it really solidifies. And I was having a great time playing. The art is beautiful. The characters are hilarious. Their abilities are very reflective of whatever style they're trying to go for. And that part was fantastic, too. So for being a work replacement, the theme was all across the board. And anybody who's run a small business, it translates across not just anime. Just so you know. So that was my primary game that I wanted to talk about.
45:37As a side note, it is currently, you can go back to us on Kickstarter right now. We're not being paid to promote this or anything. Just Julie mentioned it, and it's on Kickstarter. So if you want the reprint of it, go for it. So that's Chisogi Anime Studio Tycoon. It's for one to four players, and it plays in one to two hours. It's a fun one. And this, at least the original edition, has maybe the prettiest cards I've ever seen. So nice, I'm afraid to shuffle them. They're that nice. Yep, it's true. What about you, Eric? Well, I mentioned one of my games already. It was one of the most checked out.
46:12I think we said number three on the list. That is Eternal Dex. It took me a while to get a hold of the copy because it was being checked out so often. I started hearing rumblings of this one and people saying, yeah, I enjoyed it. I didn't. And it started sounding like one I really wanted to play. I knew nothing about this game until getting on the cruise, made a point of finding someone who had gotten it off the shelf and said, hey, can I join with you? I'd love to try this game. Eternal Decks is a cooperative game about hand management. You have a deck that starts out with just a color and the numbers one through five.
46:53You're going to be playing these cards to rows on this player mat. really nice like a fabric mat that that's the player board that's kind of different and new and you're trying to fill up these rows one of the rows you have to build from low to high values one is high to low and the other one just follows a general rule that you always have to do where you can't play the same color or the same number that just got played in that row so you're taking turns playing cards but the trick is that when you play a card you will never see that card again It's gone, so you're going to run out of cards real fast.
47:30The way you get more cards is by filling up those rows. When you do so, you get to unlock one of three Eternals at the end of that row, which come with a whole bunch of new cards. Whoever put the last card on that row gets those new cards. Cool, they get shuffled up, and that's now your new deck. However, by waking up this Eternal, you now have a restriction that comes into play. Maybe you can't play fours anymore. Maybe you can't play sixes or you can't play certain colors. That's a problem because people have those cards in their hands. They want to be able to play them. So you have to play certain combinations of cards by discarding them to the river over there to block off, appease those Eternals and make that rule no longer apply.
48:16You also have to do your timing right because I may be flush with cards now because I completed a row, But Julie is still sitting there with two cards and giving us looks like, come on, guys, I only have two cards. I need help. You can help by instead of help instead of playing a card, you can three times during the game pass a card and just give something to someone that, you know, this will be perfect for you. There's also communication. You're not allowed to say specifically, I have these cards or I am wanting to play over here. But you do have two little, very much like magic maze, two little markers that you can just put down on places on the board and be like, this, don't play there because I have a perfect card for that.
48:58Or please help me because all I have is this over here. I can only play over here, but I need to play over there. So I'm in trouble. and you attempt to complete goals, appease a certain number of Eternals, complete certain rows multiple times, and the more rows you complete, you now have removed one stack of cards from the end of that row, so now you have to put five cards in the row instead of four, and then six cards in the row instead of five. It ramps up as you get more resources and abilities, and then there's multiple missions in the box. As soon as I played this, I immediately went and pre-ordered a copy from their next print run.
49:38Eternal Decks was a rose. It sounded like one I would love, and I absolutely did. Oh, good. Then there was a game called Ham Helsing. Ham Helsing is a game from Fireside Games, the folks that made Castle Panic. It's based on a children's series of books. Cooperative. You play a character and you are, you know, fighting baddies, demons, monsters, that sort of thing. You can be Ham, the pig vampire hunter. And you can be the dog, I think, is one of the characters. Anyway, you're given a character. It is a deck building, deck crafting game. You start out with a basic deck that has symbols on the cards, a couple of special abilities.
50:21You can get currency to put transparent sliders into the, you know, upgrade the cards, much like Mystic Veil or Unstoppable, that stuff. So you're making cards better by adding some icons, maybe abilities. And you get currency by taking out bad guys. You will move around a map. There's a big bad that is gradually moving toward your hideout. And there are big bad, there are little baddies that are spread around. and you play icons from your cards to take them out and do good in this map. However, after every move you do, after every turn, you're going to add minions in the circle around you. So you might be bordering four spaces.
51:09You're going to put out four little bad guy tokens in all the spaces that are around you. You might be bordering seven spaces. You're going to put seven little tokens around you. And some of those not only will put more minions out on the board, but will also cause them to surge and move and come towards you. And they're going to do damage to you. They're going to do damage to you if they're in your space and you only have so many hit points. You need to heal and do stuff to stay alive and manipulate these groups of people. But ultimately, you have to take down the big bad. The big bad has a lot of hit points.
51:42In our four-player game, he had 65 hit points. Yeah, he's tough. Yes. You have to start attacking them at some point, but the big bad doesn't really earn you a lot of money. You need to earn money by taking out the little guys, and that's how you afford stuff for your deck to make your deck better, because your basic deck isn't going to cut it going up against the big bad. The big bad also has blocking dice when you try to attack the big bad, maybe with a bunch of color-coded symbols. They're going to roll dice and possibly block colors of attack. So if I have tuned my deck to be very strong in purple, and I am going to do six damage in purple, and the bad guy rolls purple on the dice, my entire turn is done.
52:29Or my entire attack is done. That particular movement phase is done. If there are too many minions, they reach a threshold in an area, which is very, very easy to do as they surge around the board. they're going to burst that, overcome that zone, no longer giving you the special ability for that zone, which helps you churn your deck, make purchases, get some currency, trade stuff. You don't get to do that anymore. And I spent, when I played, oh, the game only goes five turns, by the way. You only have five rounds to defeat the big bad and take him down to zero. And if you are blocked multiple times, you sometimes get bonuses for landing certain color attacks on the big bad.
53:18But if they're blocked, you don't get those bonuses. So for several turns, I had zero currency because I decided to go after the big bad. And so I had no upgrades for my deck for several turns of the game and blocked several of my attacks. And eventually I was surrounded by spiders. and I think I was eaten and carried off to their nest. I think this game's too hard. And it was one of those that we kept reading the rule book over and over, like we're missing something. They're all surging too fast. There's something wrong with the pace here. It's possible that we were just terrible. And that could still be true.
53:58No, you're right, Eric. I really wanted to like this game. I love the theme. I love the art. I like Fireside Games. it is so hard yes and i think that's a i think that kind of kills the game because whether you like hard video i mean hard board games or not this game looks like it's for families yes and this is going to just really discourage people it's also too long and too short at the same time as in the game is a long game but there's only five turns so a deck building game doesn't work with five turns, really. When you're only buying five cards, I mean, you can. There's ways to get additional buys.
54:38There were levers to pull, but I think what really, the thing that finally puts the stake in the heart of this is those block dice and that you can build up to a major move and you feel so good about playing all these symbols and I got these cards in my hand, I got this great move and I don't land it and get nothing if a purple shows up on two dice. No, this is a pass. This is way too thorny for me, and I'll be moving on from Ham Helsing. All right, well, let's bring up the mood here with Cozy Stickerville. Okay. Cozy Stickerville is from Corey Kanetska Unexpected Games. This is the first time now that I've, in a while, where I've played a game that was described as cozy.
55:26Well, cozy's actually in the name of this game. where I felt that they were accurate with the word. There's a lot of games like, it's cozy. I'm like, you mean it looks cozy? I actually stabbed my opponents 15 times. My wheelhouse, I see. But this one really is cozy. If you like games like Animal Crossing, et cetera, et cetera, that's what this is. In fact, this is barely a game. What it is is it's a big board, and you will play some stickers on this board building a little town. That's what you do before the game starts. You put out like eight stickers on the board, your house and some trees and stuff.
56:03Then you start one of 10 games. And each game, you draw an event card. The event card often gives you a choice. You make the choice. Something will happen. And then after you do that, you take one action. Your actions often are some of these event cards stay out. And it will say, John wants to move to your village or Judy wants to move to your village. John's a crazy inventor. or Judy wants to bring art. And you're like, oh, which one do I want in the village? And you pick one in that person now, you put a sticker on the board. But once it's stickers on the board, you can then for your action say, I want to visit Judy's house and something will happen and so on and so forth.
56:42And that's the game. It's a huge multiple choice book game. And at the end of the game, you have more stickers on the board. You put the 10 or I think it's 12. I don't remember how many cards there are per game. event cards away, draw out the next deck, everything stays the same, and you keep playing. So me and the kids have played through the whole thing. We played through all ten games, and there is enough stuff left over that you can play another ten games in the back. It's just that if you get to the spot where it's like, John or Judy can come visit, it's going to be Judy, if you said John the first time, etc.
57:19So you have less choices the second time through, but still lots of choices. We did not get to do everything. There's a little little bit of escape room stuff in there, very mild stuff that comes across. But it's just such a treat. Everyone was amused. Oh, this happened. This guy came. Is this guy bad or good? Meanwhile, I guess there's a little bit of trigger warning. If you have problems with your an overbearing father, definitely that's the case here. You're like Bill that your father's like, meh, I can do better than that. he's like there the whole like he's in the background the whole time because you start off by being a lazy terrible child of your father so he sent you off to prove yourself are you really let's unpack it's a journey of discovery well you are kind of lazy but I guess you get this game as you're coming out you're redeeming yourself yeah I don't want to spoil but there's like some family stuff but again it's not that deep It's not a lot of – there's no murder or bloodshed or any of that stuff.
58:27The worst thing that happens, maybe someone will steal from you or they will scam you or what have you. But we just found it to be very engaging. We played it in three sessions. We played three games, then four games, then three games. Okay. And it just – it's easy to pack up, put away. It is disposable. Obviously, when we're done playing the second ten games, we'll be done with it. but I had a really amusing time. I'd say we probably played six to seven hours total, maybe seven or eight. I'm not sure. I wasn't timing it, but we had a lot of fun and I think it's very worthy of the cozy name. Cool.
59:03The other game I played was Fest Season. This is the game that was constantly interrupted by shouts from Eric's table. Well, that was actually the second time I played it. This is a game in which you're throwing on a music festival in which you have different artists coming and performing. They're all parodies of actual artists. And this is a big game. Parts of it feel like Ark Nova. Parts of it feel like a roll and write because in this game you take an action. There's one of three different actions or one of six different actions you could take. And sometimes taking an action moves you up in a track and moving up in that track gives you another action.
59:40And then that action, when you take that, gives you another action. And so you're building stages, bringing artists into these stages, buying amenities for you. You need a bathroom in your music festival, I hope. Or maybe you want to build a little burger stand or what have you. And then also, do you want to promote rock or alternative or heavy metal music? There's different kinds of music, different genres. And the theme carries it a lot, but this is one of my favorite heavy Euro games I've played in a long time. I wouldn't even say it's that heavy. It's lighter than, say, La Cerda and Galactic Cruise.
1:00:16But it's still a lot going on in it. But I think the theme makes it really easy to decide what to do. I'm going to build a level two stage because, you know, the mild green chili tomatoes, you know, we're going to play on that stage. There's a lot of that in this game. In fact, sometimes they just changed a letter. Or even U2 is Y-O-U-T-O-O. So I'm like, all right, great. Anyhow. Legally distinct. Yep. Legally distinct. But it is. And in fact, I've debated, you know, there's like a program I think where you can paste up and I thought, would it be fun to put in the real names of people? But I don't know.
1:00:59I don't mind the silly names either. And it's just, I think that's a lot of fun, but it also offers really good choices. Trying to kind of build up your engine, building these stages, getting income. as you move up the tracks. So a few minor production things. It's a first time company that did a Kickstarter, you know, so there's some, a few minor production things that would have changed. But overall, I love this game. This was a big surprise for me, a big rose or hula hoop, whatever one's a surprise. It sounded like the biggest discussion came from when you had to decide in the beginning of the game, I don't think you play with all the music genres.
1:01:36You said like, pick one of these that doesn't get played. And there was a lot of - It took like five minutes to do that. A lot of discussion. There was yelling there too. I think we took EDM out. I think was the music. I don't remember if it was EDM or it might have been pop. One of the, some music went out. Because with four players, you don't play with all the music. And I'll never play with five, so I'll never know. And they even have two expansions where you can buy, where you can pick your genre music. Because if you're a country fan, there is no country music in this game. I am amused though.
1:02:08Both times, the last two times I've played this. I said, which music were you throwing out? And everyone shouted country. I'm like, it's not in the game. Not an option. Pick a different genre. I'm going to put polka and just annoy people. Sure. So that was fest season. Fest season, which, ooh, I need to make sure that we have that at Dice Tower West so I can teach it to people. That would be west season. Yeah. I know Jisogi is going to be there on a hot games table and Eternal Dex will be there on a hot games table. Nice. Nice. I look forward to setting those up. All righty. Well, we still have time to go in between then and now.

1:03:35You just like dad jokes? That was a dad joke for sure. I actually thought that was funny, that one. Oh, my gosh. The king is dad. It's a rare thumbs up from Tom. I know. It's a rare thumbs up. I don't know what to do with myself.
