In short

The episode is a post-match discussion of Tottenham’s pre-season win over PSG, framed as a sign Spurs are “better than people think” under new manager Thomas Frank. Guests argue Spurs adapted tactically: instead of a passive low block, they pressed from the front, attacked with wing-backs, and repeatedly looked dangerous from set pieces—especially long throw-ins where Micky van de Ven/“Danjso” (Danjuma/Danso mentioned) winning the ball became a weapon. They also highlight Richarlison’s intensity and best-ever Spurs display (if fit), and Pedro Porro/Dejan Kulusevski/Matheus Nunes? (names mentioned include Kudus, Paulinho, Bentancur, Sarr, Solanke) as key contributors.

Key claims

Frank’s “marginal gains” and player-platforming are working; Spurs can hurt big teams in multiple ways; squad depth is the main concern after noticeable drop-off when players came on.

Notable examples

PSG’s goals are described as brilliance rather than Spurs mistakes; set-piece long throws; Richarlison’s early shot and link-up play; Paulinho’s out-of-possession disruption; Kudus bullying Nuno Mendes.

58boys there's nothing better there's no greater way to start a football season before it's even started in bitter disappointment that's what we are it's what we like all right i know people are frustrated i've seen a few comments on twitter people complaining about bottling it and all that shit but mate this is winning that game would have been stupid it would have been nothing like what we expected and lo and behold come i'd say 78 minutes i'll start again maybe there we go maybe we just might hold on to this i'm joined by felonious filth how you doing mate all good all good and Seb Martin who uh some people a lot of people may know as uh does Seb on football on TikTok but also got a YouTube channel as well uh called Seb Martin and uh knows a lot about spurs and tactics and that in fact I was standing in front of Seb Ben and Kish yesterday at the social it was quality quality night actually had a really good time yeah really good and it was like having a brick wall of men three of the biggest men i've ever seen in my life and everyone knows i've got a penchant for big men nothing like that but like everyone knows about the big man army i'm building and i think if you're willing i've got three new recruits oh mate we'll be there romero van de venendanso back three that's quality it was um mate uh let's start seb with your overall take-homes because I mean been a few mixed a bit of a mixed response to it I know how I feel people probably have been listening to the podcast for a long time know what direction I'm going to go in but how did you feel about it all?

33I thought it was I thought it was good it was one of those where it's it's a painful way to lose the game and after like right after the game I was obviously disappointed but I think the overall take-home in terms of going into a season the type of performance you know first competitive game under Thomas Frank I was I was really pleased with it especially first 75 minutes before we sort of went back into our shed a little bit for the last 15. I thought we were great. The back five works really well. We weren't as negative as I thought that we were going to be when I saw the lineup when it first came out.

01We had a lot of chances. Set pieces was lovely to look dangerous from. Long throwings are now a thing at Spurs apparently. So that's exciting. But yeah, I was really happy. They're really, really happy. My favourite beat was every single time it went out and Danso picked it up. It was like, yeah. Unbelievable. It seems such a simple thing that we've just never done in the history of our football club. It's become a weapon. And it ain't even like a Rory de Lapp missile. It's a very lofted throw-in. And we all know about the throw-in competition they had. And Danso inevitably won, as we all assumed.

36But we caused real big problems for me. It wasn't just a throw-in. It was the tactical plan going into that set piece. And every set piece you look dangerous at. Yeah. It was one of those where like Thomas Frank's spoken about so much about the marginal gains that he's so big on. And that's just part of it. Like if there's any way that we can have a sort of marginal gain in our game or an area where we can really hurt teams, then that's going to be it. And if you're playing a big team, especially away from home or like a PSG, getting a throw in or a corner now is going to be really, really exciting in those games.

07Whereas before it felt like we weren't really a threat from set pieces. So, mate, I'm loving it. I'm all there for Thomas Frank's throw-ins, corners, whatever's next. It's unbelievable. Do you know what? I was going to do some sort of play on words about Tottenham and Stoke, but I'm not even going to do that. It's just sensible stuff. T, what did you make of the whole evening? It was a rollercoaster, man. But the set of pieces was a sight to behold because it's something that kind of goes against the Tottenham way, so to speak. But we owned it, man. We owned it from the beginning in anticipation when Danzo got the throw-ins.

48But the first half was just perfect, really. They went to the lap and I thought, oh, my God, it made them mad. But they had nothing. For the first hour, they just had nothing. And I think we'd given so much in that first hour that it starts to tell in the final third of the game, I'd say. We have a strong XI. and I mean maybe I don't really agree with the subs he made but it was a nice night I was seeing I guess we're seeing what was the art of the possible with this Tottenham team yeah I mean that was it I mean what we were all expecting when we saw the lineup but even before the lineup came out especially with no 10 recognizable 10 we all just thought this is going to be a part of the bus low block counter kind of display and everyone was ready for it we were happy to see that because PSG are PSG regardless if they've had three weeks rest and you'd argue that probably did them a service some might say it didn't a disservice but did them a service because three weeks ago they were in the final of the club world cup these players are sharp still it's not like they've just the drop-off is so dramatic that suddenly we could take them lightly so when it started and we're like the first five minutes you're like we're pressing them right fresh legs press them maybe put them on the back foot a little bit oh we weren't expecting this 10 minutes in same 15 minutes in the same 45 minutes in we were pressing them push them back and i'm kind of thinking like what what we've what what we've been told and i think what we've been telling ourselves is that frank's way of dealing with big six big a big six side or a big club like anyone could really hurt us would be paying like a you know a back five wing backs and soak up the pressure and try and get at him on the counter with the speed of Kudus and that sort of thing.

39But what we actually saw was something, the direct opposite. It was like we went on the front foot. We're defending from the front line and it just goes to show, you know, and a lot has been made of Frank's sort of ability to adapt. He's adapting in a way that's even surprised us, surprised everyone, I think. No one expected that first half, sir. Yeah, I think he's done well in that game to sort of dispel the narrative that it's just going to be negative, boring football, back fives under Thomas Frank. Because the thing is, back five doesn't necessarily mean boring football. You know, it's just an extra centre-half.

10You can have really attacking wing-backs. I thought Spence and Porro, you know, really pushed forward, pushed onto PSG's full-backs at times yesterday, which was great to see. I thought Pat Matassar was unbelievable carrying that ball. So good. Kudus as well. I mean, I genuinely think Kudus has like a ridiculous ceiling. I think you're seeing that in this pre-season so far against PSG yesterday. But yeah, I mean, even Richarlison, I thought looked brilliant. We didn't really miss Solanke yesterday. His hold-up play was excellent. It was so nice to see us use a lot of different attacking weapons.

40And like you said, cause PSG to lose the ball in their own half, turn the ball over, higher up the pitch, put pressure on them. And hopefully that's a big sign of things to come against those top sides because we've got the quality to... We're never going to be a team that sits inside our own box and camps out against those bigger sides because we got too much quality to do that, I think. And if we can sort of have that nice blend of sitting in a bit of a lower block, choosing our moments, but also choosing our moments to press onto teams, I think that's what people are going to get excited about, Frank, when the season starts because we're going to really show a lot of different ways that we can play and hurt different teams, which I think is super exciting.

17I've enjoyed the reaction to the game. Inevitably, you're going to get these people that are, you know, throwing around the fact that we bottled a league and you know it happens in football all the time especially playing teams as good as them and this wasn't like a week and barring Dunnarumma who's a big loss and probably would have definitely saved Romero's header this was still an excellent PSG side who tore up Europe and the fact that we were able to not only be competitive but better them and and Luis Enrique afterwards said that you know we did Tottenham deserve to win that game it shows i think it put a lot of people on notice a little bit like they we've been dismissed as a team that won't be able to compete in the premier league with the hangover revenge ball it is still going to be an issue and opta statistically i think he put us 14th in the league it might be 14th it might be 11 i can't remember i think it was 14th and just like i think people are underrating us and that this that display really like i was talking about the reaction it showed i think people were surprised there was a couple of like chelsea tiktok accounts i don't know if they're sometimes with tiktok and you'll know better than me except that there's people here that go that they go out their way to praise other teams because the fans of those teams like it they get big numbers it's like grifting i think it's called yeah yeah um but but whatever they were saying even if they were doing it was was true in the fact that Spurs are going to be difficult to beat for absolutely everybody as well as having some of that star power going forward I want to talk about the performance of Richarlison and Sarr especially T what what did you like about them because I think Richarlison's performance was his best ever in a Spurs shirt probably well that's quite a big shout but um can't think of another I think with Richarlison what you're going to get with him is a lot of energy and I think whenever I speak about Richarlison there's always going to be a a bit patronising because what he makes up for in skill and grace, he just gets himself about.

16It doesn't give the defenders a moment space. And I think in a... Thomas Frank, I mean, a lot was made about Ange, you know, pressing the ball. But I think this pressing was anything, it's better than anything that Ange did in his time, I suppose. But yeah. Now I thought Richarlison was impressive. The early shot he had, he looked sharp. I mean, he's been rumoured to be one of the people leaving, but I wouldn't have guessed by his performance. I like him a lot. And if he can stay fit, then he can be a very useful part of our squad. He's got to stay fit because his fitness record was terrible. But if he can put on a shift like that, then I think we'll look good this season.

49And that's for Saar. I think he just needs to make a position his own. I was saying last night, it feels like he's deployed kind of all over the place. And within the game, you need that fluency. You're not going to be like in one position for another game. The game changes, you move up or back or whatever. But I feel that he's got a massive future. He's got a high ceiling. we just need to utilise him in the best possible way because even in the Europa League final, it was almost a bit like a 10. I mean, even the way Richie played a role in us getting the winner. And last night, it was just everywhere.

21And I just hope that this is a springboard because there's always like a 10-game burst where Salah looks great and then he drops off. Then he's great, then he drops off. I think last season he scored against City in the League Cup. And around that time, he was getting forward, getting goals getting good shots on goal and then he kind of fell off a bit so I just need him to just keep that up for an entire season I'd say perhaps that's about his development and about him like knowing his best best positions I think he's he's such a he's just a utility man to use an archaic expression he just he can play anywhere pretty much in that midfield role we've got to bear in mind as well he's had about four managers as well hasn't he yeah so he's been for a lot in his young career.

07That's best. What did you like about both of their performances? What did you like about what they did and how effective they were? Honestly, everything. Especially with Pap Sarr. I think he's been our best player this pre-season. And yeah, what you said, T, I think the thing that's great about having a player like him in your squad is you can probably play him in three or four different positions and get a similar level from him because he's so good at so many different things. And that's a great weapon to have in his squad. And I think you'll see, he'll probably play, against those bigger sides in the 10 quite a lot.

37And I think maybe against smaller sides when we have a lot more of the ball, then he'll probably play a little bit deeper maybe in the pivot. But I think that's going to be a consistent thing with Thomas Frank is that the way that he platforms his players to get the best out of them wherever they play on the pitch really is just one of his biggest strengths as a coach. And I think that's what you saw with Pap Sarr. And yesterday, I mean, he was everywhere. Every time one of those PSG midfielders got the ball, he was no more than two yards away from them at any time. Interceptions, like his reading of the game, was top, the way he used the ball was top as well.

08And Richarlison was just, I think Richarlison is one of those players where when he's lacking physically, you notice it with him so much more because it's what his game is kind of all about and has always kind of been all about is, you know, that intensity, his press off the ball when he's got the ball, you know, harrying players. And when he's not on that, like he hasn't been at Spurs for the last, what, two, two and a half years because of those injuries, it's just refreshing seeing with a full pre-season under his belt and looking like he's building that a little bit. and if he can stay fit, he's a really decent backup striker.

39I've been saying this summer that I think it was probably time to move on just because that injury record has never really improved in those two years and it's one of those where you probably can't rely on him and we'll probably be talking about him again at some point over the next couple of months about injuries and we should assign someone this summer. But if you get this kind of Richarlison, then he's honestly a really, really useful player and I think he showed that last night, hold up play, getting his shots off quickly, which was good and yeah, very positive performance from both of them.

05Mate, great shot in the first half. I can't remember how it was laid off to him, but he just hit a deflection to be fair, but made the keeper make an excellent state. And I was like, I haven't seen that before. I don't know if he's, his striking ability is decent, probably underrated to be fair. It's just that he just so rarely gets in a position where he can get a shot off. But it was more than that. It was his, I think if he would have had a really poor game, it would have affected everybody because when he was hit with a ball, he just managed to keep hold of it yeah drop a shoulder lose his man and lay it off and i'm going to talk about pauline and kudos especially because i think i've fallen in love already to be honest but the but but richarlison was massive he was linking up well he wasn't he's been economical with the ball all the things he's usually not like the ball he's so bored of seeing the ball bounce off his shin or his knee yeah and that's to do with matt sharpness it's to do returning from injury and all those things but that performance i run my old man who absolutely despises richarlison and it's probably where i get it from to be honest but and the first thing he said he couldn't stop talking about richarlison's display and maybe because the bar's so low and we've got we expect nothing that when he has a six out of ten we think it's a nine out of ten but legitimately i think it was his best display yesterday and yeah i just echo everything you said about Saar now the two signings Kudus and Palina obviously Palina's first proper game Kudus has played a few pre-season games but this is this was competitive and played at a level where you could kind of see what we might expect for them I just it was so noticeable when those two players went off and that's not to be critical of the players that come on although it shows is perhaps a lack of squad depth to some degree.

53And that's why signing, I want to talk to you about signings in a minute. But the performances of both of them were just sensational because Paulinho just destroys, he breaks up and he can play football as well. The myth that he can't play football is a nonsense, but certainly his best attribute is breaking up, play and destroy. And the team's not going to like playing against him. And if he can, I mean, it's crucial that we keep him fit throughout the season, but I just loved his performance and kudos kudos was he did the opposite of what i thought was his best part of his game and the ball was played into him he held it up and brought the team in and with a playing a side like psg who's going to press you and any team really with ambition in and money in the premier league and impress you having an outlet like him was just it was just i just felt comfortable every time he got the ball even when he was in tight spaces he just found space and it reminded me when he when he takes the ball with his back to goal and the defender up against him a lot of what we saw with Dembele perhaps not as poetic as the way Dembele does it but effective in the same same fashion again it's one game and that's a big statement to make but I love both of their roles what did you make of their performances T?

08I thought they were great and what you've got to think about as well that this comes off the back of us getting hammered by Bayern Munich and that game feels like years ago because after that game I thought, what are we going to see next season? That was an absolute toasting and it feels like this game was a bit of a reaction to that. Did you hear what Frank said? Sorry to cut you. Frank said that you'd been working on this plan for PSG since the Bayern game. Well, you know, that's impressive that he can come up with a game plan like that. I mean, what was the quote at the end? I think Ben shared with us that it's an operation but the patient died it's still a successful operation sort of thing so this is probably how you describe the game but I was impressed with Bentoncourt to be fair he's someone who's had a lot of ups and downs at Spurs there's a lot of I mean I think the I think before the 22 World Cup god that's so long ago he was amazing in that time I think the last game was we beat Leeds at home and he was just everywhere in that game and last night the little shades of that play he was just he was in front of the defence, he was supporting the strikers hopefully we can see a return to that form for Bentoncourt as well because he's someone who's kind of been the odd man out and I think Basoum is in discipline, it's kind of opens things up for Bentoncourt a lot and it seemed like a good partnership as well, Pelinho and Bentoncourt as well, I've got to say that too but Kudis was surprising for me because I just thought he'd just be hugging the touchline I mean, obviously in a four fight, obviously a three at the back, he's going to be required to be more inside.

45But he's got a low centre of gravity. It's hard to get the ball off him. He can play facing their goal or if it's back to goal. There's a lot of versatility. And I think he's another one who'd probably be changing positions throughout games, I reckon. But you said, what do you make of it? Yeah, 100 % agree. I mean, Kiddos is like, I've said it. I don't really want to go too big on him because it's early on. We've not even kicked off the season yet. But I genuinely think he's got like superstar potential with like, the attributes he's got. I mean, he was bullying Nuno Mendes, who arguably has been the best left back in the world over the past year or so.

18Like physical strength, running him behind when he's got the ball at his feet. Like you said, he just never seems like he's going to lose it no matter how many men he's got on him. And, you know, he's going to be so versatile for us. I think it's going to be really interesting to see where he plays on Saturday, if he plays in the 10, because obviously I doubt we'll play the midfield three that we did on yesterday against PSG, against Burnley. So it'd be interesting to see him in that sort of position. But yeah, he was amazing. I think he'll go down. After this season, we're talking about him being one of the best signing Spurs have made in recent years, I think.

48At least since the Pochettino days. And I mean, amazing. Bayern, Premier League, proven quality actually does improve your start in XI. Who'd have thought it? Paulina as well, yeah. I mean, I was quite surprised at Paulina's performance, actually. In my predicted XI, I said that he probably shouldn't play just because I thought he looked so off the pace against Bayern. and I thought because he hadn't played that much football, maybe Bentancourt, Bergwijn, Saar would be a better option because they're fresher, but he absolutely proved me wrong. I mean, Desiree Dwayne is somebody who I've seen, you know, he's torn Liverpool apart, Villa, so many teams in the Champions League this season, one of the best players in the world.

23Jaapalinho didn't let him have a sniff. He followed him around the pitch, was unbelievable. You know, such a big physical presence, like you said, one of the best out-of-possession players in the league and he proved all of that yesterday. And I thought, like you said, T, it was really nice to see him and Ben Tanker looking like a solid duo in that pivot and playing really nicely together dovetailing nicely in those areas so yeah but I mean both of those signings so far are looking like successes definitely and at the very least will add a lot to this squad in certain game states this season. When you look at the statistics for Palina's display they don't look that impressive like and this is why people have based their entire football opinion on some numbers on a fucking website that he won like 50 of his tackles according to this website i'm reading right now um and he was dribbled past twice and zero dribble success and obviously that's not his game he had around 69 pass completion against psg pressing the you're and a player of his style is going to struggle probably to complete passes to anything where and if it near where he usually be able to against say what he might do on Burnley against Burnley if he plays it's what you said about tracking about being in the right space at the right time making it difficult for players to turn and being aggressive in that none of that stuff shows up in statistics and that's what that's why whenever I watched him whenever the ball went near him he caused problems there were a couple of times where it went past him again you're playing against world class players it's gonna happen they're incredible at one-on-one so yeah I just I thought it was a great signing when he started.

01Time may tell whether or not it is, but I'm excited about it. What I think the conversation we had at the social, and thank you to everybody who come, by the way, because it was a great night and everyone had a good time. The last 10 minutes of the game was painful, but generally it was a really good mood in there. So thanks everyone for coming. But the conversation that was having, that a lot of people had after the game was we need more bodies in more quality signings and it's such an obvious thing to say but the drop-off from when that first 11 came out and the players came in and they're cold coming in and there might be reason for why but we just do need a couple of players probably in the shape of Eze and Savinho that would probably put us in a situation where we could be quite hopeful of what next season might hold it's crucial isn't it T that we bring in at least one at least Eza but if we can both those players Yeah I mean you know my frustrations with Levy and Enoch we've wanted Eze for the last two summers now and we're in August 48 hours before we play Burnley and we're still kind of you know playing with our dicks at the table here you know we need to just should have just got in there sooner.

24Having said that, it's a positive that, you know, we're at a decent stage with Eze and Savino. We do need the pair of them. I would rather, Frank, have not bought Telon last night. That wouldn't have been my choice. But we definitely need more bodies. And I think if we are going to persevere three at the back, then we definitely could maybe do another centre-back or at the very least, just don't let Voskovic go. I'm not sure Voskovic is maybe ready to start loads of Premier League games, but the fact that he's there in the background learning from three very good centre-backs to Red F and that's probably a good space for him.

00But yeah, the transfer window hasn't been the greatest but I think Savino and Eze will just boost everybody really because I kind of thought we don't really need many more wingers but I think after last night's game we probably realised that there are gaps in the squad. Obviously, everybody remember the Roma pre-season game we beat them 5-0 at home. And we went to the season of all the optimism and then ended up getting two points to make games. So sometimes you probably learn more in these situations where you see where your weaknesses are and you go into the game, you go to the season of no illusions of, you know, the slog ahead.

39Seb, I don't know if you were being like, I don't know what you was trying to get at last night, right, when I turned around and you said to me, you look nervous. and I'm like yeah we I we I what happened I've seen a million times yeah was you saying it because you were believed we'd win at that point like you were convinced would you or was you just like having a go what minute was this I reckon 74 something like that I was at that point yeah at that point I think I would have been really confident I don't know it was one of those where I couldn't really work out how I felt about the game at that point so I was like we're going to win it and I'm buzzing sort of how do we react to this do we celebrate like it's another Europa League or are we still nervous because it's Tottenham but yeah I was I was quite confident at that point I was I was gutted that we threw it away to be fair but and like you said T a couple of the subs didn't come on and really have the impact that we were hoping for but you know I think up until that you know as well PSG's two goals I don't think they were mistakes from us I think they were you know moments of brilliance from PSG and I think at that point yeah maybe maybe it's because i because ben was telling me before the game ben bowman i'm sure everyone knows him um oh yes he was he was telling me before the game he was like i'm not nervous at all i don't you know it's one of those it's a win-win situation like if we win it then it's great we can count as a european trophy if not who cares it's a glorified community shield so i think he affected my mentality a little bit on that but i think i was nervous at that point i I think I was confident.

13We all thought like that, didn't we? Yeah. It was like, no one cares about this game. The amount of conversations people come up to you going, don't matter, does it? Don't matter. I don't feel anything about this game. No, no, no, I don't. And we went 1-0 up and I'm like, oh, maybe I do. And then we went 2-0 up and I'm like, I definitely care about this game. Please don't fuck this up, Tottenham. Don't fuck it up for me again. I can't take it. If you fucking do this again to me, I just can't take it. And then I went for a piss because I was so nervous. and Spooky was with us and sat down, went for a walk.

41He just couldn't watch it. And I thought, if I go for a piss next door, I'll have escaped at least two minutes of this hell. Didn't you miss the goal? Right. So I came back down and I was continuing watching. He'd go, what time is it? 86. And it came up and it was like 2-1. I went, they scored. John turned around me, where the fuck were you? So he just faced me going for a piss. they'd scored restarted and the game was playing like I didn't even wouldn't even know it had stopped the reason why I'm asking that is because T mentioned that 5-0 win against Roma and you might not remember this Seb you might remember the game but you remember the time where we would call this Spurs were so shit back then right we'd call this the glamour friendly because we'd have one of these teams that were in Europe that would come and play we had Fiorentina we had Roma by munich once and these teams would come over and we go wow we get to watch some of europeans elite let's go to the glamour friend we just beat in roma 5-0 now it's like fucking hell it was just how far we've come when you look at stuff like that you just realize how far we've come the one thing i wanted to really say was um i think at the end of the game i was like i'd rather we'd have just lost 4-0 than lose that way um now i've calmed down i realized that no it's actually even though it fucking hurt it's probably a positive you know we've seen what we've seen what's possible from Spurs we've seen our shortcomings all in the space of 90 minutes so it's probably I mean if it I'm not I'm one of these people I don't advocate extra time I don't see a point of it and last I'd probably a good example of just not fucking about the extra half hour just get it over and done with get rid of extra time just get rid of it I think maybe in finals in finals only other than that fuck it off I can't think of a single extra time game where I'd say that the World Cup final 2022 World Cup final 2022 yeah there's exceptions to the rule but generally the quality of football just drops in extra time and everyone's looking for pens and you know it's just I completely agree I'm not bothered about the quality of the game I just can't take another 30 there's no chance I wanted to sit around watching another 30 minutes of PSG fucking pillage us that would have been horrible that would have been like Drago versus Creed yeah yeah we were lucky at that point they didn't go to extra time because we were looking a bit shaky i think we were happy to take pens but drawn drawn out weren't they do you remember at the end of the game everyone in the bar was scrabbling around trying to figure out whether there's penalties or extra time everyone's going please just penalties please yeah david alfie ward on chat gpt asking if there's penalties in the supercut no one knew i was looking around like how could no one fucking i didn't know either but i was looking around for someone just go it's penalties and I could relax and uh you know penalties is a lottery you got to remember we didn't lose that game if we went to extra time we would have lost that game but it didn't you got knocked out on penalties penalties are more or less a 50 50 you'd say yeah and you know we had a uh Mattis Tell who who missed the penalty and has received fucking horrendous abuse big shock horror that fucking football fans are cretins who knew you know forgetting the van der Ven also missed the penalty.

58You bet he didn't get fucking people digging him out on social media. You've got clubs releasing a statement saying, you know, racist abuse will never be tolerated. Like, what goes for your fucking mind if you're tweeting a 19-year-old player who plays for your football club, who agreed to sign when we finished 17th in the league and had no manager? He bought into the football club and he went on the pitch to do his best and he missed the penalty. do you reckon PSG fans are fucking digging out Vitinha right now he missed the penalty in the exact same fashion yeah the saddest part is as well as soon as he missed I knew it was going to happen like me and Ben turned to each other we were like oh god like you know what's coming now because you just like it's the sad state of sort of football fandom these days with social media the same wankers will be celebrating when he gets a brace in an important game this year exactly if you don't like him as a player that's fine that's an opinion digging him out being racist and just destroying him for his own social media accounts.

58And he sees it. Like, don't think he doesn't see it. Unless he's got someone managing an account. I hope he does. And no 19-year-old kid playing at a level he's playing at should probably manage his own social media. But if you cannot handle a bit of disappointment so that you reach out to a child, look at your 19-year-old son or daughter. Look how young they are. That is Mattis Tell. And you're ripping him apart limb from limb because of the way he looks because he missed the fucking penalty, you creatures. You should be ashamed of yourself, you're fucking scumbags, a lot of you. Anyway, he should have scored.

34I mean, he sat the keeper down as well. But I tell you what, that Solanke penalty, fucking hell. I mean, when he stepped up, I thought, it's a bit scary when your own player sits down the keeper and rolls it in the other corner. But it was absolutely Brexit, and I fucking loved it. I didn't see that coming at all. just take it it was no Brexit is in taking a 10 feet run up and well in it that's to me is what a penalty should be that's a good old-fashioned penalty if you miss if this fucking stuff and I'm not really sounding like an old gammon bloke now I hate it as well I hate it the stuttered run up like what you and they know they know how to do you think we can tell them how to take a penalty maybe we can I'm sure they've gone through the coaching and this stuttered run up seems to I don't know if it's effective or not i i don't think the success rate of penalties has gone up recently no but there's more footage now there's more data now so that's probably why they why they do it just to kind of but i hate more than that tea is dom solanke's run up it's like i like it i give yourself a chance but obviously he knows what he's doing it's for my nerves it's fucking absolute it's just mayhem really yeah yeah yeah it's funny because he's actually got a great record for us but i still don't have that much confidence in him when he steps up it's funny because I don't think he's missed one for us.

52And I think he scored Frankfurt away, didn't he, in the quarterfinal second leg. Like, he scored some big goals for us from the penalty spot. But I still, I kind of agree with you. Like, all these run-ups these days, Eze in the FA Cup final missed his after doing that. I mean, his is so slow. He doesn't even run in his run-up. He walks. And yeah, I agree with you. I'm all for an old-fashioned run-up. Just smash it in, Harry Kane style. I didn't see this at the time, but did you see that Don was there at half time with Langer? Was he? Did he have his white headphones on? Yeah, yeah. Did he have his white headphones in?

28I think so. I think he had them in pre-game in the photo I saw. Were they wired? The wired ones? Yeah, he loves the wired. He doesn't do AirPods. Security reasons, apparently. You see, it's like... Did you just make that up? No, I don't know. It's probably nothing to do with the Bluetooth. No one can hack him if they're wired. There's no other reason, surely. Why has he got wired? Yeah. He's just old. Just fucking old. He can't be arsed with some newfangled Bluetooth stuff.

54That's a good thing, isn't it? I have no issues with him being involved in it running the football, being involved in helping run the football club and especially the kind of recruitment side of things. Like, I don't know how his personality is going to marry you with Langers, but fuck them. They get paid enough money. Just get on with it. I've never spoken to you about this, Seb. What do you think of him? Do you want him around the football club? I think... He's a football criminal. Yeah. I don't really... I don't see the... So a lot of Spurs fans kind of hold him up in this godlike status. And I don't really...

28I don't really get that. I think he had some good moments. Like the Kuluzewski and the Benzanko double swoop in January. That January 2021, was it we saw on them? Yeah. I feel like that did his reputation a lot of good. Or 2022, actually, I think that was. And those two, because they were kind of instant hits, they were really, really good signings. but he did also have a couple of stinkers. I like him. I actually think him and Lange could marry up sort of what they're both good at quite well. I think Paratici in terms of his relationship with the Serie A, there's a lot of talent in that league and Lange clearly has an eye for spotting sort of those youth players.

03He's brought through like Bergval, Archie Gray, those sort of players. So I think if they can sort of work together and Lange covers maybe the youth side of things a little bit more and Paratici goes for sort of maybe, I don't know if we're looking across you know leagues in Europe he might have a better relationship with clubs there because he's been in and around the game so long and yeah I think with Paratici though the main thing when he was head of recruitment was you got so many different links to so many different players and never actually came to anything because he liked to line up a whole load of deals and then sort of pull the trigger on one that was what was reported kind of his style whereas Lange is much more the sort of work in silent stuff and you only really get reports when it's quite concrete which I prefer just from a mental point of view just because you know if you get excited about a player and it's like okay that wasn't actually anything and we had that a lot under Paratici but yeah I think them working together could could hopefully hopefully be decent they sort of marry up well.

59So I think it was Alistair Gold who was in the stands in the press room I think these are his photographs and there's there's there's pictures of Paratici and Langer talking and most of these pictures are Paratici just staring at the side of Langer's head just going I don't know what they were talking about but I imagine it went like this listen to me you little fucking blonde twink you fucking buy the players I think or I'll make you my fuck puppet you understand that's what I think went down yeah I think the summer 2024 windows probably he mentioned a couple of times yeah you can imagine Paratees he definitely wears a trouser in that relationship he probably has the final say yeah indeed you know what I thought though I thought to ask the podcast I never really got around to it.

42Like since in the 2020s, who's been our best signing? And you couldn't fucking name him at all. You probably named Romero based on, you know, ability, but he's hardly been, I think it's not been a good decade for signings. I think in the 2010s, you've had like gods in the 2010s, but now this decade. We also had Stambouli in the 2010s. Like there'll be tons that we don't remember. I think, maybe I'm, you know, I'm fucking a happy clapper as I've been told many times. But I think our signings relatively have been good. Like if you think of how many duds have there been in the last four or five years?

19Maybe you've got a list here, Tee. I don't know. It's not so much about duds. It's like the best signings that we've had aren't people who necessarily make a Spurs team of the millennium. Right, right. So they're not like that. So in the 2010s, you've got Hugo Lloris, Dembele, Vertonghen, Ardevero, Chungmin Son, Dele Alli. We've got loads of names in that decade. Whereas in the last five or so years, it's been a bit... I mean, that's probably as much to do with the change in managers and personnel around the club generally. But I don't know. The last two years, to be fair, we signed a lot of young players who will probably be looking back on him four or five years and saying they were unreal signings.

58Like Lucas Bergvot, getting him for, what, 10 million quid? I think that'll probably go down as one of our best ever signings. I mean, like, you know, yeah, I agree with you, Flav. Like our business recently, van de van Porro, that window Vicario that was a decent window last year as well Solanke Archie Gray Bergwell I hated that window by the way that window was bad in terms of not fixing issues within the actual first team that we needed to do but decent young players brought in but if we get Eze and Savino over the line in this window I genuinely think this could go down as one of our best windows ever if we get hit those two plus Kudus that could be that could be pretty that could be pretty pretty decent I want to go through the last 12 most expensive signings at Tottenham who do you think can you name the top three just while I calculate something Dom Dombele is one Dom Solanke is our most expensive in here I think Richarlison would be three wouldn't he?

02Yeah it would be Richarlison Richarlison and Dombele and Solanke I think those are three I think Romero might be up there as well. Brendan Johnson was 50 million, wasn't he? Or 45, 50? He'd be up there. All right, cool. Right, so you're more or less going right. So this is a total spend of, I think, and I've had zero time to analyse this, right? 600 million euros. Wow. Maybe we haven't been as good as I thought. 600 million euros. Dom Solanke, number one, 64. Mohamed Koudouz is our second highest, 63 euros. Tanguy Ndombele 62 Richarlison 58 Brendan Johnson 55 Jesus Christ that's a lot of money that's a lot of money for Brendan Johnson yeah remember it's not pounds Christian Romero 52 good James Madison 46 good business Davison Sanchez 8 still God yeah he's won 17-18 so it doesn't even count as that season sold me dreams though he was so good that year and just never lived up to it.

0942 million we paid for him. Archie Gray, 41. Pedro Porro, 40. And then you got Van der Ven and Mattis Tao, 40 and 35 million. I'd say overall, overall that's not that bad when you compare it to other clubs. Say five out of 10? Yeah. Quickly, boys. You tell me whether not, not including the most recent transfers, if these are hits or misses. hit miss or maybe Dom Solanke maybe yeah maybe yeah Sangu and Dombly obviously a hit Richarlison maybe miss maybe I'll take miss 100 % big miss yeah interestingly Brendan Johnson hit miss or maybe maybe for that goal just for that goal honestly he might even be a hit just for that goal but yeah I think he's had top goal scorer last season it's got to be a hit but it doesn't feel like yeah no yeah Christian Romero hit massive hit yeah yeah James Madison don't fucking don't because I have to fucking defend him wherever I go on the internet I love him but the injury record I'd still go hit though because we didn't actually pay that much for him we got him for like 40 mil plus Harry Winks as well so technically only like 25 mil for him I suppose it's a maybe slash hit I'm not even asking about Davinson Sanchez miss miss miss yeah all right that'll do pedro paro hit definitely band event here um right let's do some oh can i before we do some questions i've got something quite exciting to well it's exciting for me and hopefully be exciting for you um with the fighting cock and myself have been involved in the kind of development of this mobile game uh this isn't a paid read by the way this is something we're directly involved in or i'm directly involved in there's a game called club and it's like a mixture between fantasy football league and fifa ultimate team and basically you start with a little park pitch and a squad of lower rated premier league players and you build your way up to a world class 11 ultimately and all of you you do this by the players you having your squad succeeding in real life like fpls you'd expect yeah so it's really nice little uh little game you can dip in and out of you sign players from agents you've got upgrade your stadium you've got to sort your squad out you can loan players in you can sell players release players um and obviously you can compete against each other we've created a league the link is in the description of this podcast so get involved there's some really big people behind it like the people that made a halo are involved in fifa and football manager uh we've got the the former fa boss alex horn is also involved um there's tons of people back in it and luckily enough we've been invited to get involved and really believe that it's a really fun thing to do so if you like fpl and you enjoy uh ultimate team then why don't you download it it's free to play and um join our league like i say the link's in the description below uh and and get involved it's a quality game and fpl's boring now so you know it's something new time something new and i've had ben davies in my first pack on there so if you're lucky enough like me you'll also get a Ben Davies so there you go yeah I sold Ben Davies I packed him also but I got rid of him my squad at the moment is I've got Romero, Yoro, Mings I don't want to say the other player I'm not going to say him is he a gooner no oh uh Casado, Tavernier, Alvarez, Bailey, Jimenez up top and I've got Jack Grealish after he moved to Everton so you don't start with the best squad it's like building it up and and and um it's it's much more fun in my opinion than fpl i've got bored about fpl entirely but it's something you kind of when you're having a sitting on the toilet you're on the bus you can dip in and buy a couple of players talk to an agent bring them in anyway support the fighting cock join um our league and uh if you like it carry on playing if you don't you don't have to it's all good um let's do some questions boys from um from twitter as ever how did you find the mood Seb on did you go out use social media or after the game I never do typically yeah I was on Twitter for a little bit it was to be fair it was generally all right I mean you're always going to get you're always going to get a few people who are just completely overreacting but generally for for Spurs Twitter it was all right it wasn't it wasn't too negative which was good to see um what what do you make of the what we might do in against Burnley because we've put a lot into that game.

46It would be Spurs-y to put in that performance against PSG and not Schaaf against Burnley at home. You got any worries about that, T? No, because maybe we did expend a lot of energy, but it's not like a post-acoglu situation where the players are running themselves into the ground. The last 30 minutes, he did look a little leggy, but I'm a little less worried with Frank at the helm because he's...

40To$180 for 12-month plan required. $15 per month equivalent. Taxes and fees extra. Initial plan term only greater than 50 gigabytes. May slow when network is busy. See terms. I see you. Avatar Fire and Ash is now streaming on Disney+. It's the film critics are calling the best Avatar yet. Go, go, go, go! A true epic and completely jaw-dropping. This is the only purest thing in this world. Return to Pandora on Disney+. It will be an adventure for the whole family. And watch the Oscar-winning phenomenon at home. This is sick!

17I think it's really like a manager with a plan. And, you know, compared to the kamikaze approach of Postacoglu, I feel a little bit more, got a little bit more trust in this new Tottenham than I did for the last one. You'd hope they'd use that as a chance to bounce back as well. You'd hope they wouldn't be knackered and sort of disappointed going into that game. You'd hope they'd be like, right, season starts now. put that behind us and also Burnley are the worst team in the league by some distance I think so if we lose to them it's carnage but I think Brendan Johnson has got to be thinking well he didn't get a single minute last night if he starts he must start like a house on fire just to kind of prove a point well this is it and this is this is what you're you're going to have throughout the season is we're playing Champions League football there's going to be League Cup you know come in FA Cup in the new year you need a squad like him not playing he shouldn't see that as a slight on his role in the squad he'll he'll start probably against Burnley so you know it's um it's it's gonna it's gonna be fine we definitely need a few more players and we've got a question here from THFC 1958 he says it seems a lot of people blame the subs and lack of depth for squad for yesterday as a result surely Solanke Gray Burraval are good enough to start in the team I don't think that's weak substitutions do you it's funny how people move on really, really quickly from players.

41It didn't work. The subs didn't work. And we look weaker for them players being on. But Solanke and Bereval were crucial last season. They're not suddenly not worthy of our first team, Seb. Yeah, no, 100%. I think people have gone a little bit overboard on the subs. I don't think it was perfect. And I don't think Tell... I would have probably gone Odderbell over Tell just because he keeps the ball a little bit better. I think Tell came on, looked maybe a little bit too keen to make an impact led to him giving away a couple cheap fouls but I think it was just two moments of individual quality from PSG especially that first goal to get them back in we were actually defending all right at that point we were sat in our low block and it was just a nice strike from outside the area which just happens I guess and then in the 94th minute it was a quality ball from Dembele so I wouldn't put too much on the subs and in general obviously the squad depth does need to improve I think the squad depth would have been more of an issue yesterday if we were chasing a game and we had to put on players who could really make an impact in that way but yeah I don't I don't think whilst it wasn't perfect I don't think it was something to like really really really sort of crash out about from yesterday I don't think.

48Retro Football Shirts UK he asked a question presuming we'll play most games with two deeper midfielders who are we playing there it's Saar and Palina for me but that leads Bentoncourt, Gray, Berevel and Basuma out the starting lineup unless they have possessions elsewhere on the pitch. I know it's been said many times before, but Frank started with eight different formations for Brentford last season. I think there'll be opportunities for all of the squad and the best players will get in it. And I think it's Ben Tancor and Polina who are actually going to start as those, if we are playing a double pivot, it'll be them and it'll probably be Sarr on the bench.

28If we sign Eze, for example, I think that might be the starting line-up if we're going to play a system like yesterday. Do you agree with that, T? Yeah. One of the positives was that I think this kind of protects Van der Ven in a way as well because there's a lot of pressure on him because of the high line to get back and obviously risk injury. I felt that yesterday. We didn't really have to see it that much. That's another positive. I don't think there's going to be a solid state start in XI. If Romero is available, he'll start every game. But I don't think there's going to be many cases like him within the start of XI, really.

09So I think it'll depend on who we're playing. And hopefully that works, because that's what I think the fans would want, just to play according to the opposition. Not a case of, you know, like Kevin Keegan, same XI every week, go out and smash the opposition. There's more a case of being a bit more pragmatic and thinking, well, you know, this is who we're playing, got to cut our cloth accordingly, you know. Nelson Saha says, not a question, just a statement. if the outcome of a football match incites you to the point of dehumanizing one of your own, then the problem lies not with the game or the player, but with the priorities by which you live your life.

42I couldn't say it better myself. Callum Braddock said, we'll be right. I felt like a hug. I felt like a hug. Yeah, I did. I mean, he's right. If your takeaway from that game is anything but a sort of mild reassurance that we're probably moving in the right direction, then I think generally following the football club, like Spurs might not be for you. Do you know what I mean? It's like this weird Tottenham and that performance last night, despite it ending in a way that was very Tottenham, was anything but what we've been used to, certainly in the last two years, but even before that. um glass ankle says went better than expected last night we're not gonna finish 17th yeah so there's that there's that lee bishop says are you surprised by romero's high-pitched voice boys um what do you think we made a bit of a commotion about making him captain like i like i did i've never seen i maybe i'm wrong i don't know and maybe son did do this when he is made captain i've never known like the club to announce new captain like that like what i like who gives a shit really who the captain is so what do you think it felt quite like did you do a tiktok on it yeah i did actually how many how many likes you get on that um i think i got like six seven thousand i think so clearly people do people were loving ramera's announcement but it It did feel quite like a new signing sort of announcement, didn't it?

25But yeah, I remember they did one with Sonny where it was like they filmed Angie's speech and then him like basically announcing that Sonny was captain and then Sonny went up and did a speech. So I don't know if it's always been a thing. But yeah, I think with Romero, it's more the shock that he could actually speak English because it's kind of been like an urban myth around Spurs that Romero hadn't bothered to learn English for the past five years despite being at Tottenham. And he can speak English. and I was shocked at his high voice. I thought he'd be like a proper growler, like deep voice, but no, he's not.

57Yeah, I've done a bit of a 180 on Romero. I was so frustrated with his injury record and playing one in two and going off to Argentina to now, like there were times in that game yesterday where it occurred to me a couple of times that when those two play, we don't lose. I mean, we didn't lose yesterday, effectively. But Van der Ven and Romero, I think are weirdly somehow underrated not by us I think we understand how good they are if we can get them to fit through the season and based on that performance last year sorry last night I don't think it's out of the ordinary to think this is a top six season I don't know I might be getting carried away I said it before last night get carried away man get carried away yeah fuck it yeah I will get carried away actually I mean you know I'll be I'll be shocked I'll be shocked do we finish outside the top eight and I think top six are 100 % I mean I want top four title charge well fifth is is fine like that's probably going to be Champions League football again mate I'm not I'm up for finishing six actually if you said to me do you want to finish fifth or sixth next season I'd probably go sixth because we could get in the Europa League and win it four times legitimately it wouldn't change T the format the format's not going to change right no no no you wouldn't think the format's not going to change you're not going to start dropping Champions League teams back into that tournament.

22If we qualify for it, we'd be favourites hands down to win it. So what does, do you like the idea of four major European trophies? Does that sound good to you? Absolutely. Right, does a fifth place finish and going out in the group stages of the Champions League sound good to you? No. What about winning the Champions League though? No, I can't, Ben. I mean, sorry. Seb. Steady on. Steady on. Let's not get carried away. Yeah, let's not be crazy. What are you talking about? Let's start. Patrick M said, where did John Baskett his trousers from um a bit of a lovely mate i mean they went down the storm you've got galoshes man you've got to be confident to wear those kind of trousers and i went to him like where'd you get them from he went they're women's what if there is a woman alive as big as you

08um it happened again as well like john's like i think john wants me to stop calling him like talking about how big he is because he's not i mean compared to you seb i think you're probably bigger than him maybe or at least on a tall mate you're definitely taller yeah so we've made a big thing about him being big and now when people meet him they're constantly going you're not that big actually like john's i never did this um yeah so he i don't know where he got his trousers from he was wearing a wide-legged white trouser women's jean with uh black loafers with no socks no i think he had socks on as well which was a bold look he always uh he always looks good um it reminds me of kind of like a 70s drug dealer something like that it's got to slip that hair back yeah um is there anything that i've missed that you guys want to talk about anything I've skirted over that I should have discussed I can't think of anything I think we've pretty much covered it I think there's a protest on Saturday an anti-league protest I can't talk about that yeah there's a protest on Saturday of course you can talk about it they got the date wrong but shit happens who did on the video they put out but people know when we're playing surely I mean I got the date wrong for people buying tickets, the amount of messages I got about this.

38I set up the ticket. Did you notice? No, I didn't. You'll love this. This is so me. Spurs playing PSG 23rd of July. I knew it wouldn't be 23rd of July. I knew that that wasn't the date, but somehow I put it on there. People are going, it says the event's already been happening. I said, of course it hasn't happened. We haven't played PSG yet, but yeah, it was my bad. Okay, so yeah, going on to the protest, I think putting pressure on Daniel Levy isn't a bad thing. I think you know just it's not going to remove him from the football club but it's going to remind him that he has responsibilities to the footballing side of it he may not change his ways but the protests were acknowledged in the interview that Gary Neville did with him so he's aware of those things and as long as it continues so peacefully and it builds pressure that's a good thing it's a good thing so all power to those guys and we've had them on the podcast and I think they're doing a good job 100 % how do we find you Seb on YouTube if you want to go and subscribe to your wonderful podcast.

37It's just Seb Martin on YouTube with two N's at the end. I'm starting to do a lot more content on there. Cheers, mate. Thanks for having me back on. You're a legend. Thank you for being a part of my you didn't know you was, but my brick wall behind me. I'm right there. That's quality. That's made my day. There were three of you. You're 33 % of my brick wall. Yeah, it's quality. and thank you for coming back on and T, I hope you're feeling better. He's battled through, you know, probably the most feeble disease anyone could have. Hay fever. I know, I know. It's an absolute shock. I feel your pain.

16I've got bad hay fever as well. I feel your pain. What is it that bloke who went, who gets, who gets, what is it? Who gets served by a flower? Exactly. And he's got a spitting a bunch of flowers. Yeah, yeah. What kind of weak individual? What kind of waste man gets served by a flower? and remember if you like FPL combined with FIFA Ultimate Team then join the link in the description below get involved in club this is a game that is growing and growing and growing and yeah it's a lot of fun and I've been playing so join the league we compete with each other throughout the season and I think we might have to have some sort of prize whoever wins it maybe they can appear on the podcast I say that and then it might be someone who freezes up completely but if you think you've got something about you and you want to be on the podcast then join the league there's got to be some sort of punishment for the team if this is at the bottom as well think about that that could happen as well yeah that could happen as well you'll wrestle Ben Bowman in honey all three of them at the same time the wall you've got a former three man army to take us on no chance there isn't three men out there alright cheers boys cheers
