In short

The episode is a Tottenham-focused football discussion sparked by Tottenham’s early-season performance vs Burnley, highlighting Richarlison’s two standout goals (including a bicycle/scissor kick) and Mohamed Kudus’s impact. Guests analyze how Kudus’s drop-of-the-shoulder/chop creates space for Richarlison, and how Richarlison’s movement (described as Kane-like peeling off the center-half) plus finishing shows he may be more than a backup if he stays fit. They debate the best striker pairing for upcoming matches (Richarlison vs Solanke) and argue Thomas Frank’s approach feels more “considered” than Ange Postecoglou’s, with Tottenham appearing more mature/less chaotic and more compact against low blocks. They also discuss midfield rotation, praising young starters Gray and Bergvall’s competence and confidence, and how competition lifts players like Sarr.

Notable examples

Richarlison’s scissor kick goal, Kudus’s role in link-up and Johnson’s goal, and a viral “Fuck Arsenal” fan clip.

24when we scored that, I was like, what a goal, dad? That was Richarlison who just scored that and dad was like, I know, I think he's shit. We all want him out. Get him out of my football club. And then, to follow it up with that second one, which there's so much beautiful things about that goal, including the 14-pass build-up, but for his finish, it was just sense. Let me just, before we get it, let me just play you something. Toro. Kudus. Oh, he's got away from Hartman brilliantly. Richarlison

01taking the adulation because that is a goal of the season contender already

12I mean is it yeah yeah yeah 100 % yeah of course it is why is it you don't see well when was the last time you saw a bicycle kick in the Premier League um that was better than Rooney's like you know when everyone goes on about Rooney's he shinned it he did shin it he did shin it but it isn't better it's not better than Garnachos it probably isn't better it's not better than Peter Crouch's either but for Liverpool but but but for the yeah I mean let's not shit on it yeah the barometer here is Richarlison's previous performances in a Spurs shirt but it was it was sensational it felt extra special because it was him because he starts the second game in a row after putting in his best performances in the Spurs shirt and then following it up with an even better performance it was it was it was quality it was quality yeah it's brilliant it was lovely and it's not it's not just the quality of the like you said there was two great and I totally agree with you I think the first goal is like almost overshadowed by by the scissor kick because that was really fucking good as well how he hits that the connection there is so good and and the little bit of work he does just to to kind of push the defender forward a little bit and then that little bit of separation just before he makes contact on both goals actually is brilliant as well like properly properly good center forward goals and and you know i sat there scratching my head going why the fuck have we not done this with Michalasen before.

42Like, why haven't we just had our wingers just serve him like balls over the top into the box before? Like, what's our problem? He probably had no faith in it that he would do anything with it. Yeah, and the system and stuff, like the last couple of managers haven't really been up to it. Like, I get it. I haven't really believed in that sort of level of... It's a bit old school, isn't it? Like, it's a bit kind of 4-4-2 and just fucking lump it in for the big man up front. But if, you know, And Burnley did give us a little bit of space. Like for Charles and for the scissor kick, I mean, he had acres of space.

16But he dropped off though, right? Defenders didn't really do anything wrong. It's just that he dropped off. He knew that Kudus would, he gambled that he would find him. And it was actually good movement. And that's a fair point, Mark, right? Because no one's really spoken about that. They speak about the finish, but so much work has to go in in order for him to get that opportunity. I mean, not least the buildup beforehand, which was just excellent you know it's it wasn't like mind-blowing it wasn't sort of Pep Carleola Barcelona 2000 and I don't know when the fuck he managed them 10 10 right there you go but but there were so many moments where we had to show quality and we did and obviously specifically Kudus's drop of the shoulder just lost his man yeah if you think that that was easy or poor defending, then you're out of your mind because that is why you buy these players.

11That was what Postacoglu had a lack of last season. A player like Mohamed Kudus who can, in a moment, create mayhem. And that drop of the shoulder and the sort of chop with his left foot to just create space and suddenly Richarlison goes, right, now I can drop. It was just, it was excellent. It was excellent. it's amazing what a little bit of Prem proven quality does to your team isn't it like you saw with the United Arsenal game yesterday the reason that everybody's saying that United looked so much better than last season when I'm still I think the jury's out on that a little bit was because of Kunjur and Mbwemo wasn't it and then you add Kudus to this team someone that can I think the thing with Kudus and we've obviously talked about him a bit more but like in this game you saw him in exactly the sort of in the role that you want him to play in these kind of games against teams that are going to sit in.

04But then we've also seen so much other stuff in his game over pre-season and in the Super Cup as well, where he was asked to play with his back to goal, scrap, fight hard for the team, work really hard. But Saturday, his quality just shone through. Because I think, again, another thing that gets a little bit overlooked because of the bicycle kick is that little chop away from the fullback is brilliant. Because he does that so much where he just like lures you in, lures you in, and then bang, he's gone straight away because he's got that low centre of gravity and then just burst the pace. But Mark's right.

34It's not just the finishes for Richarlison as well. It's the movement. The first one is quite Harry Kane-like, the way he just peels back off the centre-half towards the edge of the penalty area. And the finish. I've never doubted Richie's ability to kind of poach in and around the box. A good goal scorer of scrappy goals a lot of time or finds a yard and gets a header off or something like that. and you know as a centre forward any goal is a great goal right but you know you wouldn't necessarily back him on that sort of first finish where it's just first time and the way he found the corner like the keeper's never ever saving that um it's just funny how like we've all gone like in the space of a week probably from going yeah just this has got to be the summer in it this has got to be the summer we get some money for it but now it's just like well if he can stay fit because that's been the line the whole time isn't it it's that it's only really been about his fitness like when we bought him under Conte I was confused I didn't really get it I don't I didn't really understand why we bought Richarlison for 60 million pounds when he didn't really suit the sort of winger profile that I think we wanted under Conte I didn't get it I really didn't understand Conte playing him on the right hand side sometimes as well didn't work it just didn't really work did it and it didn't it didn't really settle and then obviously under Ange where he got that run where he played through the middle around Christmas in that first season he showed that he's capable playing as a striker of going on a run and I think the best thing about it with Richie is like you saw Solanke come on right and I think Solanke looked I actually thought he looked quite sharp like I've got a question I've got a question for you Ben right yeah like against Manchester City next week is it Richarlison or is it Solanke that starts I'll probably play Solanke just because of that game I think Richie's hold up play was good in that game against Burnley like as saw for the third yeah we want to come back to that we want to come back to that yeah but I think with Solanke against Man City playing a little bit deeper with the runners beyond him.

24I just think he's shown it time and time again for Spurs. Like, even if the goal-scoring instincts haven't been there, how good he can be in games like that. And I just think it suits him a little bit more. Is it mental that we're having to sort of think about this intellectually about who might be the best number nine for Tottenham now? Because you've got to remember, Mark, like, we've, you know,

46it's, I've, I thought that Richarlison was so beneath our level for so many, many months, like 24 months since he signed. I'm just thinking, what did we spend this money on? Why have we got him? I've said it on this podcast so many times. I've had a couple of people email me going, what do you think is Richarlison now? Hang on a second. I mean, we could all see what he was doing previously, which was borderline next to nothing bar that sort of hot streak he had about 18 months ago. No, but now, Mark, he's legitimately placed himself you know especially because of you know the performance yesterday on saturday but also added about backed up by that psg psg performance as well so like it is a reality that richardison could be a backup striker who gets decent minutes this season that we didn't know we had yeah and i mean potentially even more than a backup striker right like like a genuine rotation option or not just a rotation option, but actually like a starter and someone that can offer us something different in different games.

56I mean, we've just seen him in two games and he did different things in both, right? Like there was a lot of still, you know, the link up play in this one. I mean, he had a huge hand in Johnson's goal where he sort of held the ball up. Do you think that that, sorry, Mark, do you think that that moment, the moment where he scored that scissor kick was incredible, but as a sort of Brazilian strike and he's done it from Brazil previously because a lot of people have made reference to that he can't he has that in his locker that play in midfield I think was the most impressive part of his of his game yeah it's it's huge it means you know to have someone that can that can do everything is really really key for us I think and actually and I don't want to like there's a lot of people you know our discord was rammed full of people going oh I wish I listen to start over Solanke he's the better option if both are fit and all that sort of stuff.

47I still think there's still ifs around both. I think Solanke needs to start adding more goals and kind of more end product and all that sort of stuff. But I think he potentially does all the other stuff a little bit better than Richarlison does. But you're right. And he likes doing it, right? It's not like he's got a manager who tells him, oh, do this, but that's not your natural position. He likes getting stuck in. He likes the physical element. He likes annoying defensive midfielders and centre-backs and terrorizing fullbacks. So I think he fit, you know, and for a manager like Thomas Frank, he loves players like this, absolutely loves a player that can do two or three different roles and has, you know, an almost infallible track record of improving these players as well.

31Think of your Oli Watkins, your Unvisas, your Brian and Boomer. Like those players almost always improve under him. So if Rishi can stay fit, I mean, he absolutely could be more than just a bench, like a secondary line. I don't want to say a horrible cliche, that's like a new player. It really is. If Charleston is playing at this level, that is a new player. Yeah, he started four games for us last season, played in 15 in total. Like, you know, he was pretty much completely not there last season. So, yeah. Yeah, he's got to stay fit. And that's a massive part. And if he does stay fit, then, you know, who knows what we might expect from him this season yeah what we saw from the start of this ben was a change in personnel to a relatively significant degree you know we we had such a good run out and and should have almost definitely won against psg but we had players like paulina playing caduce played as well but the midfield looked completely different to the one that started against Palace.

38And then you've got like two teenagers in that double pivot, which are going to be crucial to how Frank gets success from this first 11-year squad. And he trusts them, right? And Gray and Baraval, while they weren't, you know, probably as sort of lucky, it wasn't. They weren't statement performances like Paulina's and like I felt he was and Benson Corswell's against PSG. but they showed they were capable of doing it and I appreciate it, we have to caveat all of this with the fact that we're playing a promoted team but Gray and Berval I thought they looked competent, there were times where Gray they were able to get at him a little bit but he looked nimble, he looked quick on the ball he was looking for spaces and there was a period in that first half of about 20 minutes towards the end where Burnley were getting back in it, and where they won the midfield to some degree.

38But generally, I just thought, you know, for an 18-year-old kid again, and that's important to keep saying, and Bereval, who's sort of a little bit ahead of Gray, you'd imagine, but the fact that you trust them and play them, you're going to need both of those kids to really sort of, you know, put their foot in and, you know, be an important part of the squad. I was encouraged by that performance. Yeah, I think it was really nice actually to see. I mean, I don't think anyone necessarily predicted Gray to start. He obviously played that game in midfield in pre-season against Newcastle, but we hadn't seen it loads from what I could remember.

18But it definitely, again, Gray is a player that Frank really liked when he was at Brentford. So it was probably quite clear from just Frank coming to Spurs that Gray would get more of a chance over time. But I think chucking him in there, the first game of the season, Like you said, Paulinho and Bentoncourt would have had, that was a mammoth effort on Wednesday in terms of keeping the door or trying to keep the door locked against PSG. They worked so hard, battled so well. And also, I don't think Burnley at home is necessarily the sort of game where you need to be playing Jao Paulinho, really.

47Yeah. Like, we've spoken a lot, obviously, about needing that passer in midfield and Paulinho is brilliant when you want to go away to the Etihad or you play PSG in the Champions League or something like that, for example, where you want someone that's going to screen that back four and just win those 50-50s and win those duels. Games like Burnley at home aren't necessarily where, especially if you've got a player and there's lots of options for rotation in midfield as well. If you want to keep him as fit and strong as possible for the biggest games, we should be playing Gray and Bergvau against, no disrespect, teams like this.

18I think at home, I think Bergvau was interesting really because I was really impressed with him actually. Like the one thing that we were missing, I think in that game was a little bit of creativity and more natural number 10, even when we went one new up and the game was a little bit more open. I still think we struggled when we got the ball in the final third, but Bergvau was always making himself available to receive it. He looked super confident. And again, I think across the board, and we'll probably talk about it in a bit with potential signings coming through, it feels like the genuine competition, the amount of players that are competing for those places in midfield has actually really given everyone a bit of a lift.

52I think it's made Sarr raise his game even more. I think Bergvau, like I said, he was so, he's always been eager to impress and he's always been brave. But I thought that on Saturday. It felt like an opportunity for him. I feel like he really tried everything to sort of grab it. And I think he did well, despite it not necessarily playing in a position that suits him best. Because I still think he's better a little bit deeper where he can drive forward with the ball rather than receiving it in the final third. He's not that sort of number 10. But I think it was refreshing to see, above anything.

21We've been crying out. We've been wanting to see Graham Bergvau play in midfield together for so long, obviously. last season it got to the point where it was like oh fuck it please just like everything else has gone to shit just let's just see the kids that we think are going to be the food like the future and the face of our club um it was just nice to see it on the opening game of the season game of the season after a really tough game in the week and it also shows that there's a manager there that's willing to just use the squad a little bit more rotate play players that are going to suit the strengths and weaknesses of the opposition and just give them a chance where he feels like they can they can make an impact and that was that was really refreshing so it's good to see them in there i thought gray grew into the game as the game went on like you said i think maybe maybe they got on top of him a little bit towards the end of that first half although i thought he did okay um but second half he massively massively grew into it and i was yeah i was happy for him can i just ask you a question um mark if you fancy this that what how did you feel watching a game of football under thomas frank compared to a game of football under postocoglu i'm not asking you to destroy Apostol Coglu I'm just saying did was there any shift in your experience watching the game yeah I didn't I mean I was probably karma if I'm honest with you I think that's the easy answer I think I think a lot of fans are gonna gonna say that I just I felt we we seemed a bit more mature is not the right word right but like we felt everything's felt a bit more considered um it didn't feel as chaotic didn't feel as on edge or I didn't feel as on edge because it didn't look that chaotic.

53But only had a few, a couple of chances. I mean, we weren't super defensively solid and, you know, we didn't flood the box with our own players and all that sort of stuff. But it just, it felt, it didn't feel like they were going to score. I mean, their XG was, I think, less than half. So, you know, they didn't have great chances. What was it? What was their XG? What did you say? 0.4 or something like that. 0.4. And Ben will have it. He knows this. He's just waiting. I think it's actually 0.46. I'm sorry you fucking piece of shit this is your wheelhouse Mark come on you should know this did you just make that up then?

30yeah I made it up I'm actually having a look now it was 0.94 shut up double what you said I'm well off to be fair though they had a couple of opportunities you think they're probably good for at least one goal that one just before Richarlison's bicycle kick I think it was Jadon Anthony where Vicaria made the save he should have scored that I think he should have scored it it was a poor shot yeah and they were fortunate to get that yeah opportunity I thought yeah I like you know if this a bit and again like I definitely I agree with you Flav we these are two very different managers with two very different strategies and like Ang did not have an easy season last season like he did not have all or many tools even at his at his disposal so we should be really conscious and mindful of that and like he did although I don't subscribe to this whole, he wanted a trophy.

22The players wanted a trophy. He completely threw his ideas out the window to win this trophy. Anyway, it doesn't matter. I said I wouldn't bag on him and here I am. Yeah, I just felt like it was a bit more considered. Things felt a bit more planned out, which for effectively the second competitive game of the season is pretty good, right? I think there's still question marks, but a lot of people were saying like, how's Frank going to set up against a team that sits in a low block and all that sort of stuff. I think he answered a lot of those questions with his game. Well, there you go. We were adventurous.

59We were on the front foot and there was a conversation between what were the differences between Posta Coglu's Tottenham or an aggressive manager's, maybe Harry Wren, that's Tottenham when he was playing a low block. And we were asking the question of whether or not that Frank would be able to do that because at Brentford the challenges that they that he would have had there wouldn't have been really generally dealing with a low block it would have been about how do we hit teams on the counter and I'm probably being super reductive with that and there's much more to it than that but generally that was a question that that would have been posed to Thomas Frank is that you know you're you're now the manager of Tottenham Hotspur it's not of all due respect actually no respect to Brentford fuck Brentford you're not you're not managing Brentford anymore you're managing Tottenham Hotspur and that means that there is a requirement for us certainly at home against a team like Burnley to force the game and it's exactly what we saw I thought yeah especially in pre-season as well where like most of the if you if you take like Reading and Luton aside from it where are games where obviously you're going to dominate the ball when we played against proper teams there were teams that we had to sit in and be difficult to beat like against Arsenal for example um Newcastle like slightly less so with the way that they play but still we did it was again a strong defensive performance and obviously PSG and Bayern you're not necessarily I think they were almost good tests for the Champions League where it's like you're not expected to necessarily go and take the game to these sorts of teams so for the most part our bigger tests during the summer were about being hard to beat and being compact rather than taking the game to team so we We were probably coming into a game like this a little bit cold, preparing for this kind of fixture, if that makes sense.

41We hadn't had many games in pre-season where we were really trying hard to break teams down. And there's going to be bigger tests than Burnley. They're going to be – I know they obviously have an amazing defensive record in the championship next season, but I don't know. When teams like Forest come to Tottenham, for example, who are very well-organised, very well-drilled, playing in that low block with better defenders as well, like Milinkovic and Murillo compared to Burnley, like there's going to be tougher tests like this to come but it was almost good to get that one out of the way early to say oh no we actually have got the tools to kind of do this and that was without Madison or Eze or you know a Savino potentially coming through the door or like a Kuluzewski for example but that's why it's so important to have a player like Kudis who can just take hold of the game and just run the show from that aspect but yeah what did you make of his performance overall is just fucking great isn't it he's just like it's such a how did they sorry West Ham fans going oh we've there was one geezer who has a podcast and everyone I've said stuff we all say stuff but he said we've basically pulled Tottenham's pants down for 55 million that's really good good business and you're like what is that right that's what he said yeah apparently apparently that's no I did see it yeah I did see it Mark what did you make of his overall performance yeah I loved him I've been a huge Kudas fan since day one of course you are you called him before everyone else did you I did come in I told you this he played in Denmark he might have some receipts here I have got receipts here go back and check it so he came and you'll remember now that I say this because I was banging on about my mate who works for Right to Dream and he came obviously through their system Right to Dream is where they It's an academy, yeah, that's got links.

33They own a Danish club, FC Norshalen. They've got academies in Africa. So they found Kudus playing in Ghana? Correct. And sort of came through their system and played at Norshalen, not for long, before he went off, I think. And then I lost track of him. Netherlands, maybe? Yeah. He played somewhere else before Ajax as well, I think. But when he said he was brought over Africa to Norshalen, what level of Danish football is that? That's the best league which doesn't say a lot because there's like you know four teams and it's small but it's the top tier in Denmark and North Carolina are one of the better teams but you know everything's to scale Denmark's small five and a half million people so but you know teams like FCK and so on are regularly in the rugby league Did you just defend Danish football there?

21Of course We've only got five million people I'll tell you what with 30 million people we took over this fucking planet like 400 years ago i don't know you stop banging on about it then mark you're fucking about it listen you're gonna get called that again for bullying you know you know a bloke came up to me on the uh the uh the part of social and went so funny can you stop um i can't remember exactly what he said but he said along the lines of like do you like bark and i was like i love mark I love Mark but it's just it's that kind of relationship where it's it's fun it is funny yeah so he's he's gone from that team in Denmark yeah came through working very very hard being incredibly ambitious my mate says he's one of the most driven and most sort of focused people he's ever worked with but also one of the most generous like he he's very aware of his surroundings very aware of where he came from he's very very so he's very driven but he's also quite stubborn and that's what you saw in the second season at West Ham where he knew he won he knew West Ham's just a stepping block for him and I do wonder a little bit we could potentially like we could potentially be a bit more of a stepping stone towards towards his final form right but let's just enjoy him while he's here you know he is though what are you saying in three years Real Madrid yeah yeah I mean look I mean that he is that good he's got an incredible ability an incredible ability Yeah, well that.

53So his character and his personality, he's, and he's quite quiet, but he marries that with an incredible level of dedication to his craft. He's got a really good backup, what's it called, like a team around him. So his family are very supportive. He's very, very supportive of his hometown. I can't remember what it's called right now, but he gives a lot of money to them, goes there every year and gives them a ton of football boots and all that sort of stuff, sets up academies. Try and remember his hometown because I know what it is. Yeah. I can't Google it while I'm talking. No, I must need to guess what it is.

27Just say any noise. It's a four-letter name. Yeah, correct. It is. It begins with N. Nima or something like that? He's pulled it out of the bag, isn't he? Class. Absolutely class. Men are class. That is class. Under pressure, he's pulled it out of the bag. Mark Nesbitt. Before the season even kicks off, soccer fans are already making predictions. Who wins the league? 29:44City branch. Terms and more at applecard.com. Yeah. He always, and he brings that up all the time. There's, there's, um, the, the, um, what's the, uh, that, that artist who did his, uh, his intro music and all that sort of stuff. Like, anyway, I think I'm veering off topic here. I'm, I like him as a character, as a person as well, as a footballer, but I think it's, it's intrinsically linked and it's key to what Frank looks like and looks for and Ange to be fair to him as well. Like, Ange would have loved Kudus. He would have fit in so well. But I love his versatility. I love that he can play two or three different roles.

17But you always know what you're getting from him in terms of his input and his approach to it. So, yeah. Sorry, I think I overspoken. No, no, mate. It's great. Can I just say, just take this moment to remind people that we are backed by NordVPN. Everybody knows by now why you need a NordVPN. a NordVPN, a VPN, but specifically NordVPN because of the way the world has changed and what the government wants to how they want to restrict us from watching all the content we're desperate to watch at 10 o 'clock. Maybe, I don't know, Mark's probably doing it about 2 o 'clock in the afternoon, I'd imagine.

56Oh yeah, working from home. Working from home. I've used NordVPN twice today already. I'm 43. There's probably because of everything that's happened most people listening to this podcast probably have a vpn most people who are listening to this podcast have signed up to nordvpn that's fighting cock nordvpn.com and if your if your vpn's run out maybe next time sign up with our code and you can help the podcast but we all know how good it is right we all know how fantastic vpns are and i don't know how long the government are going to hang around before they ban them they probably will be but uh while they they're still legal get involved in a big way because uh they help the normal man and if you're browsing certain websites and you want protecting you don't want anyone to get into your computer and you we've all seen if you get an all vpn you get the amount of pop-ups that come up in the corner of your screen and they go this is a risky website and i know it's risky i'm being risky right now, aren't I?

00My wife's in the other room. But yeah, so they stop all that sort of shit as well. So you can be you on the internet without anybody finding out. NordVPN.com forward slash the fighting cock. I want to play you a clip, boys. I've got it lined up. So you know there's these people that exist outside of football grounds and venues and festivals and around drunk people generally. And what these people are doing is finding ways to get clips so they explode on social media. Ben, you know what this is, don't you? Yeah, like the Vox Pop kind of. Yeah, let's find some drunk people that will fucking give me all the value that I need.

38Yeah. And the bloke went up to these two lads, and this might be, I've watched this clip, I'd say about 100 times in the last two days. I cannot get enough of it. These two legends, I don't know who they are. I don't know. I almost don't even want to know. I just, I watched this and I thought, this is Spurs. This is Spurs. I think we've just battered Burnley. I just want to play this for you. First of all, fuck Arsenal. Second of all, fuck Arsenal. What? Get me involved. What's the interview for? Just talk about the whole game, talk about Cottenham. Fuck Arsenal. If a great game, 3-0, two absolutely wonderful goals by Richarlas.

21He'll be seeing me after. Guaranteed. Fuck Arsenal. First of all, fuck Arsenal I love that so much I actually tweeted it from the fighting cock people think that I'm tweeting from the fighting cock I'm not, it's not me but I had to tweet that from the main account because people were saying, Ben oh no, no, no hold on a second, we weren't playing Arsenal we shouldn't be thinking about them we don't give them the oxygen in the room, fuck that when you wake up in the morning how much of a decent human being you are is directly correlated to whether or not you're thinking about how much you fucking hate Arsenal and what I loved about that clip was it was just like regardless of what the geezer was saying he just wanted a review he just wanted a review of the game and this lad just goes fuck Arsenal secondly fuck Arsenal and then this guy out of nowhere just comes along and goes Richarlson great performance I'll be seeing you after the game well I don't even know what that means yeah what does that mean that's what I want to know It's so funny the way he delivered it as well.

30And I look at them lads and I think, that is the fact that in this era, there are still young lads, and they've got to be early 20s, something like that. They're still holding the beacon of hating those scumbags so much. Yeah. I loved it. I loved it. Yeah, it was so good. So, so good. Sometimes I wake up in the morning, they're the first thing I think about, just fuck Arsenal. They're on my mind before Spurs enter my brain, just because I hate them that much. I don't understand why people use that as a stick to beat us with. You hate Arsenal as much as you love Tottenham. A hundred percent. A hundred percent.

05My happiness is directly correlated by how well 11 men who don't even know I exist perform. And then on the other side of North London, another 11 men who perform and don't know I exist. So I don't know what I'm doing. but yeah my happiness is directly linked to the betterment of Tottenham Hotspur and the dismantlement of Arsenal yeah yeah and you can't have one without the other no other they're intrinsically linked like you said you can't have one without the other but I'd also be happy if they they died yeah yeah but I'd rather they existed and were shit like would you rather them not exist or would you rather them like I think I'd rather them I'd rather them just to not exist even if they were in League 2 or something like that.

58I'd love to see them go down one day but I'd almost like them to still be like a Premier League club but just finish like 10th every year. I'd love for Arsenal just to turn into a mid-table club so you could still have the thing of playing them a couple of times a year and like, yeah, we should beat these like just pat them on the head kind of thing. I can't say I agree with you, Ben. I want them to disappear and not exist anymore. Oh, don't get me wrong. If that happened, Thanos you'd be on to the next one though you have to have rivals like Batman and Joker and Superman and Lex Luthor you have to have because they help define you you're right and Arsenal we've got others we've got Chelsea Chelsea don't exist for me but if Arsenal went then it'd be Chelsea wouldn't it?

46would it be West Ham? for me it'd be West Ham for Chelsea I couldn't even give a shit A lot of people chastise me for having a relationship with Roy Jennings, right? But the thing that breaks him every single time, I don't acknowledge our rivalry. He hates it. He hates it. And West Ham fans hate it. You just say to him, you're not our rivals. You're insignificant compared to Arsenal. Because our rivalry is so important to Chelsea, to West Ham and to Arsenal, that for us to say, you don't matter. Regardless of how well they do in football. how many tournaments they win we don't acknowledge their existence as it manifests in front of us yeah and just say arsenal are the only thing that's important it kills them boys it absolutely kills them could you imagine like your wife like cheating on you right and then hooking up with this other man and then you're going why are you doing this and she says to you you really just don't exist to me anymore that's what it feels like that's what it feels like for Chelsea fans right now.

50Do you know what it is like as well? It's interesting with the younger generation of Chelsea fans who, I haven't got loads of mates or anything who are Chelsea but a few people I know, it definitely feels like their level of hatred has also shifted towards Arsenal as well. I think it's like people like my age, like 26, 27, like their dads and the generation like slightly above is still very much Tottenham for Chelsea and like probably, like Rory probably falls into that as well, right? But I feel like it's probably partly because of social media and how visible Arsenal are and how memeable they are and how much they make tits of themselves continually.

28But it definitely feels like they're not that arsed about us at the moment and we're not that arsed about them. When we play them, I hate them. And I'd rather they didn't win anything and I don't like what they're doing and stuff like that. But I even feel like their younger fans are starting to pivot more towards Arsenal being their main rival as well now, Chelsea. It feels a little bit like that. Maybe. Boys, there's a couple of things from the game that we haven't discussed yet, which was... I'm just trying to find it. Right. Yeah, so it was... West Ham fans are calling for... I don't know if you've seen any of this, but West Ham fans are calling for their owners to hire Ange Boster Cogley.

09Would that be... How does that rank with you? Because from a West Ham fan, I can understand it completely. like that feeling belonging to the football club everything he delivered to Tottenham whether it go tits up is another thing probably would but how would you feel about it if Poster Goggle went there do you have any issues at all towards him you mean yeah towards him I don't know what towards Ange or like I honestly don't think I'd care that much like he was only here two seasons like I yeah you know look Football's a career. Football's a job. The guy's got to be able to have a second, like another job after us.

50If West Ham come and offer him a good contract, you should take it. I wouldn't know any grudges against him, for sure. He's not potch. There was a connection there, but I think he did a few things towards, well, certainly last season, that made people turn off him a little bit. I wouldn't have any strong feelings about it, to be honest. uh no i don't think i would either gilliam balaga has just reported that manchester city have decided that savinho is going to stay um which cures any possibility of rodrigo joining city and which would be a shame for us i'll be honest i'm not sure how much i believe that did you see it earlier no i saw it when uh i think someone put it in the in the group chat um t put it in the group chat i don't like i don't i'm not sure i think if spurs put the money on the table like pep doesn't typically stand in the way of players that want to leave i think if spurs again there's been so much itk uh bullshit this summer with with top them and obviously things do change and things you know what someone's come out and told someone and it's got somewhere might have actually been true at the time it's like gibbs white the amount of people that were like nah trust me it's done kind of thing and obviously things change but it fills up with the ese and savinho things that the journos are definitely following what's like a day later than what some of these spurs like itks are actually going with and a lot of people seem to think that spurs are going to go back with a club record bid apparently that's not to say that i definitely think it's going to happen but i'm not sure that i would rule that out like i don't think they would lock it i just think i think if they've got a player bear in mind the competition for places they've got in that team but you saw like servinho supposedly injured on saturday right oscar bob comes in who spent the whole time out last season injured because of his broken leg he looks amazing and I feel like Savinho with it being a World Cup year with his agents kind of pushing for the move look in half an hour it might come out where everyone's going yeah City have totally shut it down he's not going anywhere fair enough but I'm not sure I'm not sure about that I reckon Spurs put the money on the table he's gone yeah fingers crossed I'd love him and Eze it looks like it's going to happen as well which would be very exciting if we get them to unreal Jed Spence signed a new contract today four hours ago it was confirmed Spurs Spurs official on Twitter.

13Good, good, really good. I'm not sure that Doggy is our best left back. I think Jed Spence is our best left back. Mark, what do you make of it? Are you happy given the fact that he was out in the dark or out in the shade for so long? For him to come back and get two new contract offers in the last 12 months or 18 months is sensational work from him. Yeah, it's brilliant and very well deserved. I think he's done it all for himself. caught a few, caught a bit of flack when he just came to us and when that was sort of happening as well. And obviously in and out of the team and all that sort of stuff.

50So yeah, look, I love Jed Spence. I think he gives us so much. I think he's matured a ton as a person. I think that really shows in his, not just his kind of performances for us, but also off the pitch. I think he's huge to have around. He's got that edge and that ingrained sort of belief and ego. that you need to have. Whether he's the best left back, I mean, I see people asking that now. I think it depends what you're, you know, you have to look at the context for it. Like what team are you up against? I think he has qualities or some qualities that are better than the doggies, but I think the doggie brings a lot as well.

29And, you know, so I don't know. I think they're pretty on par in my opinion of them. I like that Spence is a bit more attacking, but I think Udogi brings a level of calm and sort of tactical awareness that I don't know if Spence is 100 % there quite yet Udogi feels a bit more like the senior player in my opinion than Spence does but it's reasonably close If you had to pick one against City if they're both fit who do you pick probably probably Spence I think just for his 1v1 defending ability whoever's going to play out on that right hand side for City you'd imagine it would be probably Oscar Bob, again for his 1v1 ability, I think games like that as well, it's defensive I think, again it's a little bit like the Solanke-Richarlison thing we don't necessarily need to force these, it happens all the time when a player kind of emerges where these conversations start to happen amongst the fan base of who should be the starter and I get that it's good to have a it's good to know what your best team is obviously right but I think it'll be horses for courses i think they'll be used like a doggy's obviously had a lot of fitness issues you want to keep spence as fresh as you can like i think they'll rotate uh quite a lot i actually i think ideally i think if you want to play johnson on the left that i don't think you play spence i actually don't think that their relationship together was actually that good because they're both right footers that want to come in off that side johnson isn't that comfortable like holding the width when spence wants to come inside i think johnson is super effective when the game opens up as it did running into that space but I was quite surprised that he went with Spence at left back and not Odebeir on the left wing so I think if you've got like a 1v1 winger that can kind of go both ways from an attacking point of view where like him and Spence aren't getting in each other's way as much you know it's a dynamic that suits a little bit more I think Spence is absolutely perfect but again there'll be lots of game time for both of them And again, people forget how good a dog he was towards the back end of last season where he actually did get back up to full fitness in that Europa League run as well.

34He's so strong, such a good ball carrier. But I think he needs to improve in the final third. And I think that's what Spence has probably got over him, I think. He's just a little bit more switched on. But yeah, we've got two really good players, like really, really good players. Yeah, for sure. Any more for any more? Mark anything else you want to say? Just a quick note on that City point I think key for us against City will be that transition conversation and I think Johnson is great for that but I do agree with Ben it did look a little bit clunky out there and they sort of felt like they got a little bit in each other's way and they're not used to playing Johnson historically has played for us on the right but I do think there is an argument for both of them, especially against a team like City where we're not going to have, you know, not just that it's against City, it's also at the Etihad, right?

31Like we're not going to have all the possession here. So we are going to have to, and we'll probably see another 5-3-2. So, you know, a 5-3-2 with, and that could be with Johnson and Richarlison up front. That might be quite interesting to see. And all of a sudden then, Spence has that bit more sort of aggressive, offensive, fallback and poor on the other side, a bit more reserved and sort of dictating a bit more, that might be fun. What did you make of Johnson on the left wing? Because I wasn't, he didn't play badly at all and he had a good game and it took his goal really well. Really good work in midfield from Charleston and I can't remember if he picked up the ball and played.

10Sar. Sar was, sorry, Sar was unbelievable with that sort of thing. He just like, the ground that he just hoovers up, I think, I saw someone tweet about it so I think Spurs are going to score a lot of goals like that when the game gets open because you've got players that can just, like Sara especially, so alive to just little scraps in midfield like that where they can just get in ahead of someone and then when you've got a team that has to come out a little bit more, that's where then players like Johnson massively come into the game. I don't think we learned anything new with Johnson really on Saturday.

39We know he's going to struggle when he's trying to break a team down. He's not got that take on ability and I don't think playing on the left wing in a game like that is a great fit. But when the game becomes open, he's perfect for allowing us just to go kill it off where he can run into space. Yep. And that's, that's what you get with Johnson. I mean, he's not, he's completely different to, to Kudas on the other side. Right. But you, you just, we just have to be cognizant of what, what, a, what do we expect from Johnson? And then tailor that and contextualize that with what's he being asked to do before you really like kind of make a judgment on him.

09He's, he's not being asked to be a winger like Kudas. He's not asked to take people on. He's asked to, to create some key passes, which he does. He's asked to, to, to score goals, which he does. and to be an impact on games like that. But you'll always see his pass, his touches be low or reasonably low. You'll see his clearance stats, clearance, fuck me, cross stats be quite low as well because he's not great with that. But that's not necessarily what we want him to do. We want him to run into space. We want him to use his pace. I think he's the fastest man on the pitch against Burnley. That's what you want from him and you want him to score goals.

43And then it's just a little bit more bait. I feel like I'm putting him down by saying it's a little bit more basic with him, but you're just not going to see him tons on the ball, making flicks and like rollovers and skippers and all that sort of stuff. Like you just, yeah, you need him to be, you know, be there when it matters. And he did that against Burnley. And I think he would, if he plays against City, absolutely back him to do that as well, because there'll be a lot, they'll be open. It's interesting. Sorry, can I just say, Romero's agreed to sign a new deal at Spurs for Britser Romano.

16I'm literally just now. Shut up.

Kuti Romero has agreed to sign a new deal at Spurs, all done and sealed. Spurs captain decided back in June to stay and now a new contract is complete. Tottenham new manager Frank sees Kuti as part of the key project and despite all links to Atlético, deal was never close.

01Wow. That's huge. That's like a new sign-in. That's the third time we've seen it. Fuck Stavania. We don't need Stavania. I don't care if... I've walked Guillain Balague. That is massive. He's signing a new contract. Yeah. So that is, what we've just done, if he has agreed, and that is, I was convinced he wanted out. I was convinced that he wanted out. If he's committed to Tottenham Hotspur, this is almost like Hummingson signing that contract. That is massive. Huge. And I was about to just talk about it weirdly. I was about to say, look, he didn't have the greatest game against Burnley. He kept giving the ball away and whatnot.

39but that's not what I should be saying right now. He actually was quite sloppy though. He was a little bit sloppy. Maybe do we really want him? But no, that's great news, Ben. And actually, like you say, maybe the Savino move will come back around. And if he signed a new contract with Spurs and he's on like£150 ,000 a week and we're in this situation where we've reduced the size of the wage bill significantly to a point where it powers into insignificance compared to the other clubs we're competing with. But it's like that Sony selling Sony or getting 20 million for him and removing£200 ,000 from the wage bill means that it makes it easy work.

25And that, I mean, for him to be captain, because when he was made captain, I was like, I get it, I don't care, whatever. It doesn't bother me. whoever's captain is fine for him to be made captain and i said to you mark fucking sign the contract and you was talking about i quite like the the video i quite like the announcement video it made me feel tingly yeah but i was like sign the fucking contract he signed the contract he's done the thing yeah but i mean my thing my thing was more we don't know if it's been offered right like we don't know what the club's done or not done like you can only do what he's been what he's being asked to do like i but i think it's huge and and clearly this will make him the highest paid player at the club um it does cement his um cement him as i mean arguably our best player right now certainly and someone that we're going to build this team around so i think it's huge i think it sets a precedent for frank's kind of for frank's not career as a whole but his time here.

26It means him and the team, and obviously it's not just him, but everyone's serious about Romero and building things around him. So yeah, it's huge. How do you feel about him? Yeah, buzzing. I said at the start of the summer window, I was like, that is one of the biggest, if not the biggest sign in Spurs could make, I think. Because I think it was an indicator that you could make the argument that if you're starting again with another manager, although I think Frank was a continuation of the overall project. I don't think it was a case of ripping up and starting again you can understand why these players might go i've been here before and we're starting again and whatever i've got two years left in my contract i've got let's go madrid sniffing around me real madrid maybe you know what they like to do to players on free contracts in a couple of years time all that kind of stuff like blah blah blah so i was like if we can tie him down i think it's an indicator of where we're actually going because you wouldn't have blamed him for wanting to wanting to explore and move away after you know he's been here a amount of time and all that kind of stuff.

23And I think he's good enough to play at the top, top level. And maybe he genuinely sees that Spurs are trying to get there. I think it's a really positive sign. Really, really positive. I wonder if the shift in the summer made him... It said June he was convinced. Yeah, let me get the tweet up again. So June would suggest that it was... Yeah, we'd won the Europa League by that point. I think what it reads, he decided to stay back in June. I don't think that necessarily means that he signed a contract in June. Yeah, of course. The reason why I ask is, would it have been Thomas Frank's influence and seeing what Frank was doing on the training pitch that made him be convinced?

10But that sounds like it wasn't the case, even if Posticogli would have stayed. Unless he... I don't know, but who knows? Who knows? Yeah, maybe. You'd imagine, when was Frank appointed? like it would have been in June wouldn't it it would have been mid June so you'd imagine he would have had conversations with him because he probably wouldn't got a sense that Son was going to leave even though because Son said that he made his decision to leave around June I think as well he'd known for a while but obviously he didn't say he came in right so that it kind of maybe he was able to kind of convince him that no look stay here we're going to kind of do this One of the worries would have been whether or not Frank has the charisma to attract and retain big-name players.

55And maybe, look, I'll tell you what, boys. If Romero, who could play for any team in the top six, probably any team in Europe, you could see him at Real Madrid. You could see him definitely at Atletico Madrid, given what... What's his fucking name? Simeone. Simeone, yeah. Yeah, I mean, he's a wet dream, isn't he, Romero? Yeah, absolutely. For sure, 100%. so for him to look at this and go yeah I want to stay here I think he thinks we're going to win the league and I think I think we're going to win the league yeah also like it's like I think that's a really good point I think that's why I was celebrating right now yeah put the champagne on ice I think I think that's a really good point like you said about Frank there because again there was so much like when Ange left there was so much chat around I know that like Ange-Paul thing became you know it was like he was able to get players over the line and all that kind of stuff but I mean look at the fucking players that we've been linked with this summer.

48And part of the Eze thing was that he was convinced by, well, obviously not done yet, touch wood. So there were some reports that came out the other day saying that he was convinced by the project under Frank and all this kind of stuff. I know that thing's happened. Those lines get said every time a transfer gets over the line. But it does feel like Frank has got that ability to kind of get players on side and really sell it to them, which I think is good. And it's one thing selling it to him, but it's one thing backing it up. Like you just said there, right? But if Romero decided to stay in June after early conversations with Frank that he just wasn't going to go this summer, there's probably still some maybe doubt in his mind over long term going, okay, right, we'll give it a year, let's see what happens.

28But if then two months later he's put pen to paper on a new deal, Frank has obviously backed that up during that time as well in terms of the training and the games. I think obviously for Romero being made captain and then seeing the encouraging... He was part of a brilliant performance in the Super Cup as well. He won the fucking World Cup and he wants to stay with Spurs. I know. That's massive. This is really big. Really, really big. Really big. Do you want to bomba? Do you want to G with the big boys? Sensational work. Unreal. That is a great way to end the Fighting God podcast. Kuti Romero has signed a new deal at Tottenham.

09All done and sealed. Spurs captain decided back in June to stay and the new contract is now complete. Tottenham new manager, Frank Ciscusi, is a key part of the project. Despite all links to Atletico, the deal was never close because you cannot compete with us. All right? You cannot take our captain. I mean, I wouldn't have said this six months ago, but you cannot take our captain. All right? Fuck Arsenal. All right, cheers, boys. Nice one. Cheers.
