In short
Tottenham Hotspur fan podcast discussion focused on patience with manager Thomas Frank (“Having Patience Across The Board”), reviewing Spurs’ recent match at Newcastle, squad/injury constraints, tactical issues in build-up, and expectations for upcoming games (notably Chelsea).
Guests
None. The episode is hosted by three recurring podcasters: Cal, T (Tea), and Flav (plus occasional mentions of “Zeus,” “Jack,” and “Quinn” as part of listener/WhatsApp/Reddit contributions).
Guest backgrounds
Not applicable (no named external guests; hosts are Spurs fans).
Key claims
- Spurs are better defensively and at set pieces under Frank, but struggle in the 80% of play outside those areas, especially midfield build-up and chance creation.
- Xavi Simons is promising but currently needs to release the ball quicker and adapt to Premier League physicality; he’s not yet a consistent creative outlet.
- Jed Spence’s mistake at a corner (laces/playing for time) cost Spurs; Spurs must “play to the whistle.”
- Spurs lack ball-playing profiles to create assists/crosses; current midfield/wingback options are more “carriers” than passers.
Notable examples
- Newcastle match: set-piece strengths on both sides; Spence’s naive goal conceded.
- Comparisons: Son’s first season vs Simons; Modric’s first Tottenham season stats.
- Upcoming: Chelsea preview—Spurs may need to break through the middle and use set pieces.

1:36It's the fighting. Cock. I'm old, son. No. Hello and welcome back to the Fighting Cock podcast. Joined by Cal. And we've got tea. What's up? Cal, have you got one of those preheating mugs that you just... Yeah, an ember mug. Aren't they like 80 quid? Yeah. And I've got the travel mug as well. Sweet. Yeah, no, no. I rate it. I mean, spend the money on whatever you like. You are the sort of professor of the phrase buy things. Yes. Which doesn't take into account anyone's financial situation at all. Whenever he mentions something, I've just seen a new pair of trainers I quite like, so I'll buy them.
2:21Which is the correct energy, I guess, because life's a living, isn't it? Can't take the money with you. No, you can't take it with you. I heard this idea of having 100 % inheritance tax. the other day. So you just, the government takes everything if you die with any money. So the idea is you spend it all before you die, boosting the economy and giving it to your loved ones. Bunch of cunts. Bunch of cunts, okay, good. T, how are you? All good, all good. Yeah? I only watched half the game yesterday, so I'm not as angry as everyone else. Okay, I mean, that's a great thing to say at the start of the podcast where we talk about the entire game, but yeah.
3:00Keep going, that's fine, that's fine. It's all right. You're a pro, man. You've been doing this for long enough. Exactly. You remember the days of Blanche Flower and Dave Mackay. Yeah, man. Tommy Harmer as well. Cal, how are you, mate? Yeah, pretty good. I'm actually quite philosophical, quite calm about everything. I know normally I think I have a reputation for – I think I've got a reputation on Reddit for, like, enjoying the losses and wanting to be on the pod after the losses which i wish was true actually that'd be great i know categorically that uh that cow does not enjoy the losses uh he isn't that much of a freak no there's people out there actually they've kind of like they set their stall out as sort of angelo files they're actually kind of enjoying i don't know if they are i'm just I'm sort of just suggesting the fact that there may be people out there that kind of are enjoying the fact that we're not the most sort of effective attacking outlet.
4:05And there's people sort of – because it's an online thing, isn't it, where you go, I told you so. I told you we were better with Ange. The football was better. How did you process last night? Once again, I had a meltdown. uh can't as i get older i'm getting worse worse and worse and worse and um i i unlock the whatsapp group at the end it's just to spew because the whole reason why i lock the whatsapp group is i don't have to hear what i did so can i just apologize to you and everybody in the whatsapp group for doing that and i was told i've always great i enjoyed it yeah more of that yes more Well, I mean, not more of it.
4:51I think it didn't feel good, right? I don't know. I just had to get it out. That's the whole point. Yeah. And Mrs. Godlover, she understands football much more than when we first met. And she knows what's going on with Spurs. But she's not really interested and not invested at all. And when I'm sort of under my breath going, useless cunt. loud enough for her to hear it is a bit of an odd situation so i felt like i had to get in the whatsapp group but um zeus did pull me up last night because he said uh he goes i don't he goes i'm surprised that this is the game where you've decided to draw the line i haven't i haven't drawn any line thomas frank right at all right i'm all on the frank train choo choo right it's it's fine i was just frustrated in that and i think that this frustration comes from this position we were a completely different side last year frank's job coming into the club in the first infancy was to to make us difficult to beat and he's done that right i know we got beat last night ironically but we are a much better defensive structure than than we were last season and that is pleasing and satisfying right um and we also seem to score our most dangerous when we're at set pieces, which is also good, right?
6:15I know there's been the shift towards set piece play that's frustrated people and there are pundits across the board saying, you know, football's going backwards and, you know, all that sort of stuff. I don't believe that at all. It's just an ebb and flow of the nature of football and different styles and tactics become en vogue and others are made redundant. So the two things we're really good at at the moment is defending and set pieces. The problem, and I mentioned this on five statements on Patreon, the problem is that 80 % of the game isn't played in those parts. 80 % of the game is decent sort of short-based play, attacking play, build-up shapes, and who can do that better in midfield?
6:57And so just at this stage, I felt an element of frustration at the time that 80 % of the game was with us not doing the best level of build-up play that I would expect. And so that's my explanation of why I lost my mind. I enjoyed it very much. There was a hint of, not to that level, but there was a hint of Mourinho's era where we're starting to turn on each other a little bit. Has there been an era where we haven't turned on each other? That's true, actually. And I suppose that's the world now, isn't it? You're either pro or you're con, aren't you? You're either A or you're B. you know so i don't remember like when peter shreves managed us that we were going for each other's throats as much as this it's the internet just kind of polarizes stuff a lot more really um i don't know half of this kind of said for effect i often find that um it's very rarely i'm face to face with someone in there like saying half as bad as stuff that i read online no no something just sounds worse in text in text form because you've got no sort of um context of how they mean it.
8:11Any negative things I'll say about Frank is just, I don't hate him, I don't want him gone. I mean, if we'd have got Glasner in and Glasner had a similar approach, we'd have been saying we wanted Frank and vice versa because I did want, I did kind of want Glasner over him, but it wasn't to a degree where I felt wronged that Spurs went the other way, because they're kind of almost a similar level, only that Glasner's got trophies to his name. But it's going to be a long road. I always kind of remind myself that we did finish 17th last season. Although the team was better than that, it's just going to be a work in progress.
8:43It's just when the most exciting part of a game is a throw-in, you kind of got to just take a deep breath and just think, okay, hopefully this isn't Frank's end form, like just Danzo drawing a ball off, you know. Hopefully it's more than that. He wasn't allowed to do that yesterday, was he? no no those bastards seven hour drive and you can't have a drive to drive the ball off none of us are going to give us the towels none that would never get in a towel again they're gonna do you remember when stoke had it like sewn in their shirts or something i think is like toweling inside yeah yeah like a microfiber cloth just stitched into the shirt that is quality um what so what did you um what did you make of the performance overall like and how much i guess Cal did the number of changes, so five changes for us, eight for Newcastle, but this was on top of the fact we're missing 10 first-team players again.
9:38And for three years, we've had this injury problem now. And some of it's a hangover from last season, like Kulisevski of Madison in the summer and Dragoson. But it does affect the way you play, right? And how effective you can be. and going away to Newcastle on top of everything is a very difficult thing to do. They're the holders of the cup. They want to be defensive of it. And it was always going to be a challenge. Yeah. So how did you? Eddie Howe's been there four years and they've got Saudi owners. I know they've not gone, you know, kind of balls deep into, they've not been able to have, they haven't been allowed to really spend the Saudi money.
10:15But, you know, they've bought well, they've got a good coach. He's been there four years and Thomas Frank's been here four months. And that's the thing that's kind of keeping me grounded right now is that he has to be given the opportunity not that anyone's talking about the opposite of that although i did text i did text jack the other day and say if we could get glasnar i'd fucking take him right now get him out um jack sorry jack's jack's my friend that i can say really irrational things to and so i'm grateful to him for that um but yeah and actually when you compare when you compare last night to Villa and Wolves I thought we were much better last night than we were against Villa or Wolves in particular Wolves were woeful um what is a bit concerning is that who who we've beaten who we've lost to um we haven't beaten anybody that's I suppose Everton the other day was probably the most impressive win so far of the season well Man City away.
11:18Oh, Man City away. Sorry. Yeah, of course. City are kind of a basket case, aren't they? But yeah, you're right. You're right. City away is the outlier. And then, but then, yeah, it's what the concern is at the minute is, you know, losing the home games or drawing home games. And then with Chelsea coming up at the weekend. So that's the concern right now. But yeah, you have to put everything that's going on. The injuries is a huge issue. like we need to get some players back and we need January to come so we can buy some players as well because how about how how active do you think we'll be in January well we we know we've got that 100 million pound on the hip I don't think January is a month where a lot will happen um I think you know you mentioned getting a left back I think I can probably wait till summer to be honest I think the higher priority is having a culis on the left.
12:15The bloke from one ago should be someone we should look at a lot more in that window. Yeah, and Savini has signed a new deal, so he's probably off the table, but I would say a left winger is something that we should probably go all out for in January. But again, I think they're probably looking at it as if can we make do with Spence, you know, deputising that right-back and forward-back till the summer? And I guess the answer is yes. he's probably probably jinxing them now, but he's fairly, doesn't get injured a great deal and he's reliable in both positions. You do lose a bit with him there because he doesn't have the playmaking abilities of Udogi or Poro, but he's been very solid and, you know, he'll be on the plane at the World Cup.
12:57So I think it's the best all around, but I think long term, we probably do need a proper left back who's left footer, who can, you know, use the width of the pitch as opposed to Spence, who's going into the centre of the pitch, who is a lot more congested. So, yeah, I think January is big, but we could potentially have Udagi and Romero back on Saturday. So that changes a great deal in itself as well. Is it mooted that they could be back in time? I think Romero is probably further along from what I've read. Oh, Christ. So that would be good. I thought Spencer had a really positive game yesterday, certainly in second half.
13:35But you can see the player in him. I don't know, did you agree with that, boys? I thought when he was breaking out, some of our best attacking players was coming from left back. He was going past players. He looked dangerous. He looked comfortable under pressure. You know, I just think it's worth noting, given the fact that... Yeah, I think he was a bit pissed off about the goal and the circumstances around it. And I listened to five statements this morning and I agree with you. I don't think we can bitch and moan about that goal, really. It's fucking get yourself organised and get yourself switched on, really.
14:06What was he doing? I get it. you need your boots on in the pitch for sure and you i don't think you can actually in terms of the rules of the game play without appropriate footwear so there's an argument that he needed to have them on his feet properly before the the um the corner was taken but that was on us that was our responsibility it's not on newcastle to wait for us to be ready the referee could have paused it but he was taking such a long time of it like even i was when i was watching it was going get on with it just get on with it what are you doing like you're in no man's land there to doing nothing there at all like put it on next to the goal or get someone to stand on the corner yeah exactly it was it was a bizarre it was a bizarre thing for him to do and they're not obligated to to hold the game up and I think it's a silly thing to get booked for really because they're not going to overturn it it's not one of those where VAR will look at it and maybe change your referee's mind it's just one of those he's got a charger to the game.
15:04I think Newcastle are probably good value for being a goal ahead at that stage as well, so it's not one of those where it was a counter-punch, it was just a silly goal to give away, given that we're good at set pieces. Newcastle are equally as good they've got Dan Burnley, 6 '7", Volta Marder, who's 6 '6", and other good players in the year, and I just think that's just a very naive thing to do from Jed Spence. It was clear that he was playing for time, in a way he was doing his laces as well, and you just gotta play to the whistle in that instance you gotta be ready yes ready like just be ready all the time don't rely on that it's like my granddad my dear granddad dead now dear granddad right he he would say to me this is probably the greatest bit of wisdom you ever give me actually he said when uh a car's indicating to turn left and you're waiting to turn right do not trust the indicator is to take control of the road and do not pull out because the indicator means fuck all.
16:02Never pull out. Never pull out. Leave it in. Let it germinate. Yeah. Let it soak. God, that's disgusting. You know when you're really in love with a bird when you let it soak? Yeah. Just for like a 10 minutes off, post-coil 10 minutes soak. Yeah, I mean, everyone loves it, don't they? When you're in love. There's nothing wrong with that. When you're not, you can't get it out quick enough, can you? It's like, that meant nothing.
16:37I've never been there. I've got angry with it. Just gone, get out. Yeah, so it was on us. We shouldn't have conceded. Well, we might have conceded it regardless, but the fact that the players were just remonstrating with the ref, I just didn't think it was as big a deal as they made it. And it also, I don't know how much to read into this, probably nothing because it's hard to control apoplectic players. But Petro Pogba had zero control over his players. He spent less time remonstrating with a ref and more time telling these players to go away. It is funny having him as captain. But speaking of Spence, I think his strength is ball carrying.
17:20And he did have an opportunity to do that yesterday. I think it's just the way Spurs set up. It's not about the four-backs carrying the ball. It's about seeing the pass early and hitting it forward. That's what Poirot is really good at. And Nudoge is not as good as Poirot with the range of passing, but he does have an eye for a pass. That's probably something that Spence, he can easily improve on. Because when we signed Spence, he wasn't a one-on-one defender at all. He was more bombed down the wings, just like Kyle Walker used to either get a goal or put the ball across, whereby now where the full-back position has evolved where they're looked upon to almost be a six, so to speak, and just get in that position and think the ball over.
18:05I think I've probably got this wrong. I'm probably going to get HMRC'd here, but there's a goal against Bodo Glimt, who I think probably just spotted Madison. Amazing pass across the pitch, and he took it so well. I think this is something that Thomas was Frank Will want from his four backs. And I don't think it's beyond Spence to add that to his game, but that's not a strength of his. And that's probably where he may fall short. Not a left back either, is he? No, no, but no, he's not. And that's what's amazing as well. I remember when he first played there, Newcastle was one of the early games, ironically, and did all right.
18:43Did all right. I never thought that he would maybe turn out there for his country. So fair fucking play. I love his story so much. I think in this decade, there's not been many feel-good stories like that. So I'm always happy to see him on the pitch for Spurs. Even if he does make mistakes like last night, I just love him being a part of it, really. Yeah, 100%. Xavi Simmonds also started in the 10 again. There's a couple of things I feel about with him.
19:17is our creative outlet, right? We need him to perform well and he's just in the infancy or the formative stages of his time at Tottenham and moreover getting used to playing at a Premier League level where I think it's becoming clearer and clearer based on players that do come across from the Bundesliga is that there's probably a gap in quality that's comparable to sort of the championship in the Premier League. That's the only way I could, the fact that Florian Wurz and to a lesser extent Xavi Simmonds are struggling when they're both small technical players that don't necessarily have the weight to protect the ball or bully another player.
20:01And the fact that Valtemada has actually settled in really well because of his size and his technical ability. moreover you know look at the goals he scored there's been a sort of smattering of brilliance but generally physicality and players that are have the strength and physicality coming up through the leagues are the ones that in the in the short term perform the best that's not to say in any way that Florian Verts or Xavi Simmonds won't be able to adapt to the league they will but there were just moments yesterday where it felt like Xavi Simmonds was taking or tried to take one too many touches before releasing which is what he's done throughout his whole career because he's been able to because he's been playing around people that he's generally better than that so now he's in a different situation which is what he should strive to be which is against players that are he's equal or he's better in in in the short term and um and and so he learns and and understands that he needs to be quicker and release the ball more quickly and understand that he's more of a cog in machine than some sort of mercurial maverick player that can kind of run the game based on his own um ingenuity and he may well get there and i hope he does and i'm sure he's going to be a brilliant player for spurs but there's just like while he's up against a cdm or a defender who probably isn't when couldn't sort of live with him on a five to five-a-side pitch.
21:26But in a Premier League game with a pitch the way it is, they just can read him at the moment and he will get better at it. But the problem of our inability to really create really good attacking opportunities through build-up is the fact that you'll rely, especially if Kudus isn't there, and a centre-forward worth anything, then he is going to struggle. and I don't think we need to judge him too quickly. We just need to keep playing him so he just gets used to it and more used to it because we're committed to him now. So that's my feeling about him. I don't worry about his eventual impact on Tottenham at all really, but you boys might disagree.
22:09I did think, and there was a lot of discussion in the WhatsApp group last night about him and I felt in the first half he hid a little bit. I felt like he always took, And what I mean by that is I felt like he always took the easy option. And there's been a few times where he's kind of has space in front of him and he's running into space and there's someone left, someone right, and he does nothing. He ends up losing the ball or ends up... There was one opportunity he just had to make the pass. Just pass. And he just hesitates, hesitates, hesitates. And that's obviously a confidence thing, isn't it?
22:46But yeah, I think the physicality is true as well. you talk about Volta Marder coming from Germany and he suits that style because it's such a physical team Newcastle and then he's coming and then you look at Xavi coming into the Tottenham team and we've kind of got kind of not plodders in midfield but they're not kind of playmakers they're not someone that you'd then I'm trying Plodders is harsh I said not plodders I said they're not plodders I know you can say the word plodders when you're talking about them is an issue they're not that but they're not someone that can find the pass and release him into space they have a role and they're very similar in that role i think and they're you know there's small parts of the game that are better than each other and sarah's probably the best 10 we've got but he isn't a 10 so these players are quite and and in a if you have a big squad cal sorry to cut you if you have a big squad and many games then those three players we're talking about benton of course, Sara and Beravet, aren't we?
23:48Those three players are, and I guess Archie Gray when he returns from injury, but those three players are similar in their profile, whereas Xavi Simons is completely different. 26:27Same with Spence. Poro and Romero are the players that can use the ball well at Madison, but obviously he's not fit at the minute. And then you look at a midfield, same thing. Sar, Bereval, Bentancourt, Paulini. Paulini is a smasher. And then the other three are kind of carriers. And there's just not enough people there that can use the ball properly and get assists, get crosses in. good or, you know, kind of key passes into space, you know, and assists through the middle. So that's the thing at the minute is we're just really missing those kind of profiles in there. But I think there's definitely a player in Simmons.
27:05You see little pockets like Leeds. I thought Leeds away, I thought he played really well. I thought he was OK against West Ham. And actually, even last night, he actually picked up second half. And Everton, actually, I thought he was really starting to grow into the game against Everton. And then Frank hooked him. I've got this horrible tick, though, mate, at the minute. For two years, I've been mumbling the words, get him out. And every time I watch a Spurs game. And so now, every time we win, I'm happy. But then like last night, Frank pops up on screen. I'm going, get him out. It's a tick. Yeah, it's a tick.
27:42I've just got it since. I have that with Charleston. Yeah, just get him out. Anytime a player does anything bad, just get him out. no get him out would suggest that you're interested in the next part of his career right when I when I talk when I think about Richarlison I don't think I don't think I don't think about the next part of his career I don't think of him not existing no no that's too much but no but you know yeah I get it man we're all we're all sort of human beings and we're all you know that tick that you have for any manager now going forward is one that you've got to live with it is what it is yeah um interesting we got a question uh i don't know where it was it'll come to me or maybe i don't know where i got it from oh no no uh we use something called um fans narrative fan narrative uh which gives us an idea about what the conversations that are happening in the sort of social media space about uh conversations that might not appear at the front or what the algorithm promotes basically and there's a question on reddit and we've got some questions later from reddit uh which is uh the bloke's name is very triggered he said didn't sonny and bale struggle in their first season with us not saying javi will sure get to their level but have some patience um so sonny's first season with tottenham and bearing in mind he's a forward rather than a 10 um he got 20 he got four four goals in the premier league and one assist in 28 games.
29:19And he scored in the Europa League. He got three in the Europa League and one in the FA Cup. So in 42 games, he scored eight and assisted five. And I thought Christian Eriksson was probably a better comparison. So in his first season for Tottenham, and he came from Ajax, didn't he? In 41 games, He got 12 goals and 15 assists in his first season. Yeah, he was brilliant. Very underrated player. I think I kind of look at, not that Simmons will ever be as good as Modric is, but I think they've got similarities in terms of size and maybe a bit of a left-field shout-out to put him in Bentoncourt's position alongside Pelinia so he can kind of pick the ball up from the defence and spread it around.
30:13and he might have to deal with less physicality in that part of the pitch because he'd be mainly dealing with attacking midfielders or their strikers. So he may have a little bit more time on the ball. So that might be an option because where he plays is very congested and just doesn't have the time on the ball to shine. So maybe... Well, then Modric did play off the left until the Arsenal game in the bottom and the centre and he just never left there again. But there was a Bundesliga attack and I think if I wouldn't say we're under pressure for him to be amazing straight away because we've got a decent enough squad to get it done I think Sarr and Bergvau can fill in but maybe not offer as much as Simons could at his best but I don't know I think it's just about being patient really it's been very much a mixed bag for our signings you've got Kudus who everyone loves and just wants everyone to be at his level.

31:10And we've got Siemens, who had probably the biggest fanfare of Fassanen we've had for, God, probably this decade, you know, in terms of, like, fanfare and the expectation. And, you know, I think we've been stung by the Ndombele, where, you know, he had fanfare too and he ended up being crap. So I think Siemens has got enough of, I think Siemens has got enough about him to, even if he's not what we thought he was going to be, he'll still be a good player for Spurs. but just one more thing there was a clip I shared in the group where someone made a good point on Filthy Fellas that he does tend to flit around clubs he doesn't stay at clubs for a long time so maybe he can set down some routes at Spurs and really develop into the Premier League into the player that he can be because his best seasons have been I think at PSV he was on loan I think from PSG Yeah that was a long time ago Yeah and then at Leipzig where he's only been there for a short amount of time so this might be an opportunity of him to set down some routes, get you to the Premier League and dominate because it's interesting that you raise those players, Flav, and that you've got Sonny who's a god at Spurs and his first season was a very touching career, that really weird injury as well that It's all fasciitis, it's the tendon on the foot.
32:25Yeah, and you know, his second season has exploded so there's time for Zavi to be that guy, everyone wants to be you know, wants to define him now and be correct but I think he's at his end a bit of time. 16-17, Tominson scored 21 goals and 8 assists. And if I remember this rightly, Ericsson also... No, no, Kane got 20 and Dele Alli got 20, over 20, 20 plus. As I remember, I remember the three of them scoring bundles of goals. If you... Just a little bit of pop quiz for you. Luka Modric, first season at Tottenham, how many goals and assists do you think he if you had to guess probably five I'd say five he was always the pre-assist guy he wouldn't get the assist he'd played the pass that would create the assist so I think yeah I think it's like less than ten I only remember two goals I only remember two goals from him that season one against Wigan in the FA Cup he was on his knees and headed it in and the winner against Chelsea so maybe he got more assists on top of that he's got five goals yeah see and he got ten assists ten fuck it up wow okay surprised at that they're nine in the Premier League as well wow alright let's let's do some questions go on Quinn says I only watched the last 25 minutes just sorry I only watched 25 minutes to just after half time thought we looked the best in attack that we have done this season what went wrong and how do we build from here what do we do from here what are you expecting from Frank Boyd's what marks success?
34:08A competent striker finishing those chances we were getting around the defence an awful lot and the Charleston should have at least brought away one of those chances I think there was one instance where Brennan Johnson just had to slot the ball in and it went behind the goal I think if I wasn't in the room with my son I would have probably smashed the room up because it was just it was such a good move and we just saw it unfolding in front of him and he's like I don't know what he just took his eye off the ball and it just went behind the goal there's no way back for him is there a lot of people last night I saw online Brendan Johnson was getting it and that's a club legend you're talking about I think I think last season he went through a similar bad patch and still oh shit I thought we were talking about Richarlison that's just my pre oh Richarlison I think the fitness of the other two strikers probably gives him a lot more rope than he deserves.
35:06I think a loan to Everton... Do you reckon a short rope? Do you reckon? Get it done quick? Well, I hope so. I mean, a loan to Everton in January, I wouldn't be against that if he can get another... Well, yeah, if you put him on loan to Everton in January, put Teller in the Champions League squad. Hey. If the Saudis come in in January, he's got to go, Richie, come on, mate. Look, we've given you so many chances. You started games this season. Just please. He's not powerful. He's not powerful. He's not powerful. Yeah. He's not powerful at all. Like, to play like a Champions League football, ridiculous.
35:40Like, he's just not. And it's that, there's that saying, right? If when someone shows you who they are, believe them. And there's a number of these players that have been showing us for two years that they're just not very good. And we give them the benefit of the doubt because they wear the shirt and we want them to do well. But guys like Richie and one or two others, you just think, no, you're just not very good. And it's just time for you to go and do something else or go and do it somewhere else. But yeah, for me, I want to see, I think despite his struggle, Simmons has to play every game.
36:14We've got to play him back into form. Even if it's off the bench, he has to be seeing minutes every game. Don't let him hide. Don't let him sulk. Get him on the pitch every single game. And Kolo Mouane has to play every game as well. And until Solanke's back and then it's a bit of him and Solanke and Richarlison. He needs to be made clear to him that he needs to go and do something else.
36:38Yeah, I mean, there were moments... I'm not going to say anything that I haven't said a million times all over. I just, you know, we need to get Solanke back or Moani just needs to... now he needs to play. here's a question from Jasper Gigi he says it took Frank three seasons to promote Brentford from the championship to the Premier League and he kept them in it for the rest of his tenure with relatively good form 13th 9th 16th 10th let's say you reach Brentford's ceiling how realistically do you think it is for Frank to push on push us to a higher level the top four title contenders within three seasons the budget and facility differences are stark between us and Brentford they have spent 309 million pounds since joining the Premier League in 2021 I messaged my mate um Adam who's a season ticket holder of Brentford goes home and away and I messaged him on about 80 minutes and I just asked him like what did was there any other criticism of of his style of play of Thomas Frank's style of play and he's like not really no he goes that objectively we never thought that that we were a negative football team but we also appreciated that in some circumstances we needed to do what we needed to do in order to get a point stay in the division but you know be competitive with with teams that have budgets that vastly outstrip what ours do and um he said i never really saw a problem with the style of play but he said i do appreciate that the expectations of the fan bases are different the football clubs are different and the investment in tottenham is is different to brentford's um i mean if we're challenging for league titles in three years, then he's done a wonderful job, right?
38:23Yeah. It's difficult to define what represents success for him because I guess the elephant in the room is that we sat the manager who won the Europa League. Rightly, in my opinion. But if Frank gets to the end of next season without winning the trophy, maybe people will be critical of him. but I think I feel like his job is just to kind of get us back on an even keel be difficult to beat and be good to watch the games we lost it felt like I mean it's Newcastle and Villa it felt like from what I saw the teams played fairly within themselves they got their noses in front and just knew that we couldn't lay a glove on them although I do think if Newcastle had better finishing we could have done them Villa it just felt like they just knew how to kind of neutralise us but we're still fairly early on in Frank's tenure and I don't know I don't think it's difficult because you look at we've got Pochettino we've been sport with Pochettino because he came in and I just thought okay we've had Tim Shield we've had Villas-Boas let's just have a competent bloke as our manager and three, four years later we were almost winning the league and then five years and we're reaching the Champions League final I mean I don't think we expect that of Thomas Frank but I think because we've had that in the last 10 years where our expectations are probably ridiculous really because I don't think we have a divine right to be challenging for the Champions League unless the Lewis family decide to go ham in a transfer market.
39:57If they don't, then they would just need to be a competitive side in and around the top four. Yeah, anything to add there, Kyle? Yeah, as it stands, it kind of feels like we're miles off being a Champions League club, getting in the top four. For me, we're miles off it. Third. I know, but I think teams like Villa and Newcastle, Arsenal, Chelsea, not many, Man City, Liverpool, they're miles ahead of us. Chelsea are ninth. And Villa have been shit. I know, but we haven't really played. I think those teams... I think the way we're set up means that we probably will be competitive and probably will be in that conversation come the end of the season.
40:38That's not to say, if you said, can we do it in the way that... Chelsea might do it then yeah but I think to compare Villa and Spurs I don't think they're miles ahead of us years ahead of us I think Newcastle too Newcastle too Newcastle the 15th the other day yeah it's so early in the season I'm not sure I know we're talking about I'm not sure you can use league places after nine games as a barometer of where we're at yes it's a barometer of where we're at in the league but I think we'll see where everybody is obviously towards the end of the season I don't know. I just, I'm not sure you can use your opinion as a barometer for fucking anything.
41:15Not really. Not really. You just said that now I'm going to take the season that they're miles ahead of us. I didn't say you can't use the league table as a barometer. No, but I just feel like looking at their squads and looking at them when they play us, they just look miles ahead of us. 42:54Terms and conditions apply. I'll use your mouth boom as a barometer about how happy she is. I was about to say the same thing to you. You got that first. They're miles ahead in that their managers have been there for longer and that they're both ahead in their plan, so to speak. But I think it's so congested that anyone could beat anyone. I mean, this is a Chelsea ninth and they got beat at home by Sunderland. So anything could happen. How do you feel about Chelsea at the weekend? Because obviously Chelsea, we've had a horrendous time with them, especially at home but we've had a horrendous time with them and it's it's deeply personal because of it's Chelsea and you know the last two seasons like it's always there's always been some sort of mental narrative dominating the game whether it'd been going down to nine men or the sudden return of Romero and Van der Ven when they clearly weren't ready that must have come from and you just chuck them out there because they don't they didn't play again they both broke down during the game and didn't play again for what felt like months I don't know how long it was but It felt like months at a time.
43:57So we're going into this game without, wow, fingers crossed, between now, we're recording, this is Thursday evening. Now when, you know, 48 hours, nothing mental goes on. But you're kind of going into that game with, no, it was just another game of football, which means a lot because it's Chelsea. Like, I feel more comfortable, comfortable, going into this than I have done in a while. And I think it's because Chelsea will want possession because that's the way Mariska plays. They'll try and dominate possession, which is fine. And in a weird way, we'll be forced to play it like a bit of an away game where we try and break out through the middle, hit Kudus and Mouane and Simmonds.
44:44Those three together in a triangle. If you can get them in an area of pitch where they can play together. I know the bear on the left or whoever it might be, but we have enough quality, you'd imagine, on paper to hurt teams. If you can get it into the area of pitch where they can play with each other.
45:08I think we can beat them is what I'm saying. I don't know. We just have a mental block, man. Everything you've said is correct, Flav. our style of play, the way we set up, we should really be confident of getting a result there. But I just think that there's just something mental that just seems to fall off a cliff when we play Chelsea and Arsenal. Crazy. And it's just insane. It can't quite be my finger on it. Do you think, because of the way Frank operates and the style of play we're currently adopting, that it's less likely to fall off a cliff because this is going to be deliberate. We are going to sit in.
45:44We are going to make them difficult. this isn't going to be easy for them? You'd hope so. Or is it, it will just, you know, like a 30-year-old strike will fly in the net and they'll just pee off and run in. There is that. I think I can see a long range goal from Kyle Sado or James. I see that. But I feel like they might just, shock us, let us have the ball. Just sit deep. Because it feels like we struggle. And that might be why our home form is so bad that teams just let us have the ball and we just can't do anything with it. It's a bit like watching England over the years. You know, England are one of these sides who, well, I mean, obviously, Gareth Southgate has changed that to a degree, but you give them the ball and try and break a stunner, they just don't know what to do.
46:26Maybe Mureska does that. But having said that, Chelsea, I believe, are the youngest team in the Premier League. So if we use, if we just bomb them with set pieces, you know, that might be a path to victory. Maybe they won't, they don't understand what it's all about. They're just going in there like, going, well, I don't know what this is about. I'm not going to trust. It's not like having Lampard or Jodie Morris or whatever it might be. Droghpur, who did understand. It's like... There's all kids in it. They don't know. They don't know. This is the most upvoted question on Reddit. We ask for questions for the podcast.
47:07So go to r.coiz on Reddit and join us up at Reddit. It is good. apart from Cal, who they seem to hate. They fucking hate me. I hate you all bags. Cal hates you all. Fucking bags.
47:24But the most upvoted question here was, Flav, would you rather have Ricky bum your mum? Bearing in mind, right, my mum is 74 years old. It's not like, I don't know how old you think I am or you think that there's this idea, like John Bass's mum's soapy tits and stuff like that. she's an elderly woman. So what you're suggesting here is like Ricky has to bum a grandmother. That's what we're talking about here. Or be forced to have Richarlison be the only available striker for the rest of the season for the rest of your days. The rest of your days. So he's like 64 still playing for top. Sorry mum.
48:01Kill yourself tomorrow. Sorry. Sorry mum. For the greater good. Sorry mum. Sorry mum. It's happening. Yeah. It's got to happen.
48:13AB2733, would Alex from Bristol be a more successful striker than Richarlerton at this moment? I don't want to ask, but I feel like I have to. Alternatively, should we consider putting Richie on Big John Bass's shoulders to create a superhuman, a Frankenstein striker?
48:33It's descending into mentalness now. Slowage543 says, would you rather have penises for fingers and thumbs or just one giant penis for a nose? What do you want us to say to that? Shadow Impressionist says, do you ever worry about your own mental health while hate watching Arsenal? I sometimes think just unforgivable things about their fans and players. That's a fantastic question. It is. It isn't ended either. but I know exactly what he's talking about we all do the unthinkable things that we think when looking at them play football and look at their fans would get me possibly in prison but committed to the mental institution as a shadow impressionist says but I don't want us to go through the things we want to happen to Arsenal fans or Arsenal players as they score a goal and wheel away and he says and then I catch myself and realise they just play and support a different football club why do I hate them so much they are people too right they're not man they're little weird freaks you meet them meet them in real life and you'll know they're gremlins has anyone replied to him no I was going to say I wanted to know what the people were saying no like I live in Devizes in Wiltshire right I appreciate that there isn't any Premier League club within 100 miles.
50:02No, no, no. London's in that. I'd say 50 miles of where we are. There's no Premier League club. So they're naturally going to pick another team. The amount of Arsenal fans around here, I don't know what they've done to attract so many fucking imbeciles. Like to get so many imbeciles convinced that Arsenal were their team. Like what has happened where you just think, yeah, that vile fucking fan base and that vile football club is the one for me. because I knew it from a kid. I knew it straight away. I was grown with some minerals and an old man had told me right from wrong. Now in the modern era, I wouldn't have listened to him as much, but back then he knew what was what.
50:44This is a man who put, when Arsenal were in the, Arsenal played Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup semi-final in 1993 at Wembley, he cut out a picture of um tony adams as a donkey uh that had been printed previously in a tabloid newspaper and he put it in our window and this is a time where like football violence was still pretty right so i you know this is how strongly he felt about it um yeah they're fucking weird they're weird freaks they're weird freaks and i think actually wishing ill on some of them is not the end of the world boys i think i hated article before i supported spares to be honest um even before i knew who they were i just hated them and just um i don't know seeing seeing their shirt seeing their badge i'm just filled with so much rage of all ages from babies in prems to elder to the elderly if they've got that badge on them front kick i wish them nothing but pain no discrimination front kick 100 and they got chelsea and west ham fan to hump our legs oh you should hate us too I don't give a fuck about them I feel nothing when you guys beat Arsenal I celebrate because fuck Arsenal and it's just such a natural hatred I mean um I know neither of you are but you both grown and you don't care about fantasy football but I do and I'm quite good at it actually and um I don't pick I don't pick Arsenal players I don't pick them partly because it's the rules and partly because I don't fucking want them but I went on a forum the other day and I shared my what do you guys think of this you're a fucking weirdo I only got no Arsenal players I'm like well get kicked off I'm the weirdo I'm the weirdo exactly are you fucking what are these Spurs fans no no no they're oh it's only a game I'm like fuck off no no no I'll tell you what I'll put your mum on the game exactly yeah put her on the street is it only a game when she's on the fucking corner earning me money is that a game then because that's what we're talking about Say the game, son.
52:49Say the game's life or death. It ain't a game when she comes back in tears and I just say, give me the money. There's scar all over the shop. Yeah, that ain't a game, is it? Because that's what I think about you. If you think... Christ, what are we doing? Go on, girl. Pick some sanity. I nearly made it worse. I was sitting there going, oh, let me ramp it up. Let me ramp it up. She's bringing me back 25 points for sucking it. like just awful Jesus Christ alright enough you can't bring it down not wrap it up you can't bring me into a conversation like that because I'm sat there I'm on the edge going yeah give me it give me it it's be horrible yeah give me it my dad even play fantasy football yeah like if a fan of another football goes oh it's only a game you can have Arsenal fans yeah yeah it ain't a game your mum on the game that's the same yeah 100 % would you want to win the FBL if it meant your mum's on the game no but therefore don't put arsenal players in your team no it's weird isn't it it's like it's like there's a thing i think we all have a thing inside us that you know like when you meet somebody out in the world and you think i don't know why but i don't like you you meet people and you just get a funny vibe from little kids out of it little kids out of it they they get energy you pick up on energy from people and it's the same with them as soon as you see that badge and i'm actually managing a guy at the minute that's one of them just quickly how do you know the little kids have it because i i would never have known that how do you know they do they have a vibe little kids do people on energy they do well you've you've experienced that yeah definitely yeah what when so when you what you move towards them they sort of recoil yeah they just don't like you don't carry me don't pick me up like uh tease kid when i carried him me when he was little he was like fuck off mug like don't get away from me knew i was wrong and he knew i was and um now he loves me um but i think little kids have it and i think you do all of us as human beings have a have a way of picking up on bad energy and i think you do when you meet one of them you just know it is like sang off with you something wrong with you and yeah this guy i'm managing in the summer he was wearing wearing the shirts all the time on the way into the office and now he's got a little drinks bottle that he has clipped to his bag.
55:12Arsenal one. Arsenal one. I said, you need to let everybody know that you support them, do you? Fucking loner. At work? Yeah, at work. I was just like, oh, you've got to let everybody know. Cal, do you have the ability to fire him? No, I have the ability to make his life hell, but I don't have the ability to fire him. You can't remove him? I can't remove him. You can't affect his ability to pay his mortgage? I don't know if I stitched him up. Crack in his bag or something. You've got to go out and find the crack. Okay. 57:31Alec Trevelainey says do you find when you cook food at half time, it fucking flies by and the match is already at 56 minutes by the time you return to the couch. But when you do nothing at half time, it never ends. When you sit in your seat at half time, you're like, this is shit. And I've got to listen to a person, whoever's doing the match day stuff. And then I've got to watch sort of, I've got to listen to Ledley King or it might be Jürgen Klingsmann or Ektorsfit and you can't hear them. You can't hear what they're saying. Like the old wire lane, it was in, you might as well have been watching a conversation and trying to listen to a conversation that someone was having a hundred yards away from you.
58:16Yeah. It would take forever. Like I'd go for a fag or something at half time and I'd come back and it's like, we were one up and it was 70 minutes and we'd fall one down and I'm like, I just went for a cigarette. What the fuck? How's this happen? Yeah, I remember the day you'd have like a couple of pints and you get back and it's an hour going and we're like three nil down. But you can't have a couple of pints in 15 minutes when you've already had seven before the door. Yeah, well, you know, there's people who kind of just keep topping you up, isn't it? You know, savages. T, because I know you like a little halftime pizza or a halftime drink.
58:54What is the best goal or almost worst goal in a way that you've missed because you haven't got back from halftime yet? there's a couple of things i've missed at half time um and one i mean like okay one is actually quite sad as a marambo one because you know what happened right so yeah what he didn't score he definitely didn't score no so um you were drinking when he collapsed no you know what happened right he's running and he and he falls to the ground i thought oh okay he's obviously dived so I've gone for gone for a half-time pint and then oh my god you're getting the rumours of what's fucking I'm like oh my god I just felt really terrible I was like get the fuck up and then I think the biggest one I missed was um I think it might have been Oliver Skip against Chelsea ironically ah screamer yeah the Mwamba I was I was in the stadium as well for the Mwamba one and that was that was the weirdest experience of a Radcliffe in the Spurs because obviously he was in a really bad way and we were all know the scenario there but we uh it was um it was so quiet in the stadium and there was just nothing anyone could do and you're just like well what do we do now like what happens when the game isn't finished and it's just like the game got banned and replayed it a week later yeah and if you remember all the pubs in tottenham high road opened the doors to bolton fans and so there were Bolton fans drinking.
1:00:23We were in the Bellinera at that point. And the Bolton fans drinking in there. And I just thought to myself, let's turn on. Let's turn on. I could have everyone in here. I was about to land in. I was literally setting this up. I was going to say I'm going to cut one of them cunts. But you couldn't wait, could you? You couldn't fucking wait. You know when you see your own joke disappear in front of you, I'm just so sorry. We were on the same ballpark there, which is all about it. No, that's fine. No, but yeah, that was a weird one. What were we talking about? Half-time. Oh, yeah. So the goal I missed was...
1:01:17No, who was it? I don't think it was me. van der Ven's scored two goals against Arsenal I think or at least a goal after half time and we missed one of them I mean the worst ones not even at half time like missing missing them through having a beer I've said I've mentioned this before but we were playing West Ham with 2-1 down old stadium I would say I would say 2014-15 something like that maybe 15-16 yeah and like I took my now wife but my missus so when was like when you're really in love you take your missus to the football and then i know i know i know you disapprove okay all right i understand it but you just you want to show you what you're about like you want you want to this is what i love and i want you to experience this when really she's going i'd rather do anything else but this um anyway we're 2-1 down and like back then like west ham spurs a little bit naughty you off the pitch it was a little bit like got involved and um i was like i'll just leave let's just get out of here i don't want to be subjected to this i'm not sure she 100 wants to be here and then you scored harry's game got a brace was it you got a penalty was it two penalties i think maybe i don't know it might have been i think wink scored in that game winks that's right yeah and she looked at me it was like why have we left and i was like i don't know don't just let's just keep walking pretend we didn't win i don't think i've left the game earlier with one um i know a couple of people who left a half time at the um gareth bell hat trick game against intermilan i was talking about it to that to this day yeah what's his name i remember us talking about this at the time his name was dicko dicko he just like fuck this when There was another game as well.
1:03:04All right. Yours, Cal, you haven't given us one. Not really. I'm a bit boring. I usually just sit in my chair and fucking eat sweets and play on my phone. I think I missed Kane's second goal at Fulham away because he was having a beer at halftime. He scored a hat-trick that day, and I think the second goal was the best of the lot, if I remember rightly.
1:03:30Yeah, it's that one. Fulham Leicester Leicester but it wasn't even a good goal because Leicester at Wembley they went 3-1 up so that wasn't even a bad goal to miss either so not really I'm a bit boring I usually stay in my seat to be honest so I tend to leave early when we get battered I think there's been a few Arsenal games I've left early and not regretted it one single bit I just I can never cope with that you know just watching their fans go mental in your own stadium it's just I can never I don't blame anyone for leaving anyway this has been the Fighting Court Podcast thank you very much for listening once again if you're still with us and you're not a patron of the podcast then well that's fine it's your decision you can do that but we are going to be previewing the game against Chelsea tomorrow and there'll be a five statements on Sunday morning because I have to go and watch the club work for the game yeah I'll have to worry I know but I just don't I've got to pay for my house and I don't have I have to do it I'm on the game basically but do you know what I was checking my Instagram before we came on and I noticed that Steve Nash started following me oh nice yeah which is cool so Steve Nash is tell me about him NBA well he was an NBA coach I don't think he's an NBA coach but he's an NBA legend Hall of Famer massive Spurs fan massive Spurs fans and I only have like 7 ,000 followers on Instagram and he's one of them and in my head, in my fantasy in my head I thought maybe he heard about my financial problems with my house and he just wants to come and pay for my the rebuild of it and like he's going to save all my problems.
1:05:18He's a millionaire right? Multimillionaire? Yeah. It's minted. So it would be nothing. But actually I think if he follows the fighting cock he follows he follows me on Instagram maybe he's listening to this yeah just give us 40 grand Steve come on just make my make my life so much easier just come on yeah none of it none of it will go on brasses at all I promise you not a penny no alright take care boys take care alright hit me up Steve

We came in hot after Newcastle. We talked about why we look solid at the back and dangerous from set pieces, then why the other 80 percent of football is killing us right now. Spence showed good stuff but the shoelace corner is on us. Xavi needs minutes and patience. The physical step up is real and we need more ball users around him.
We get into the striker problem, January hopes, and who actually moves the needle. Frank’s job was to make us harder to beat and he has, but we still need patterns and punch in open play. Then it is the Chelsea preview. Possession to them suits us in theory, the hoodoo does not. Can we treat it like an away game at home and nick it with Kudus, Kolo Muani and a set piece or two.
There is a Reddit mailbag that goes off the rails, a NordVPN read that saves your hard drive and your marriage, and some halftime confessionals about the goals we missed while chasing beer and pizza. We finish with a little perspective on expectations, timelines and why we should probably stop hate-watching Arsenal for our own health.
