In short

Q&A episode focused on Tottenham Hotspur’s season, managerial/board accountability, and recent performances; includes tangents on football rivalries, porn/VHS memories, and fan media.

Guests

None. Hosts John and Cal (plus audience questions). No named external guests appear in the transcript.

Guest backgrounds

N/A (no guests beyond hosts).

Key claims

  • Spurs’ problems come from board/sporting leadership, especially Johan Langer (and “alongside” Vinay) and failure to act: hiring Thomas Frank, not firing him promptly, and January window mismanagement (e.g., spending on Connor Gallagher but not replacing Brennan Johnson after injury).
  • De Zerbi’s late improvement suggests coaches previously failed to use creative players like Xavi Simons and Archie Gray.
  • Spurs should sell 10–15 players in summer; keep/empower De Zerbi if staying up.

Notable examples

  • Xavi Simons: last two starts (Brighton, Atletico) yield goals/assist and improved results.
  • Vicario vs Kinski debate: Vicario not trusted for Spurs’ style; Kinski preferred.
  • Chelsea “destroyed” Brighton via pressing; Spurs hope to replicate vs Wolves.
  • Sky Sports bias discussion around West Ham games and set pieces.

Your lucky jersey, your chairs, and your big cooler fit perfectly in your even bigger cargo space. And when it's go time, your 11.3-inch diagonal touchscreen's got the playbook, the playlist, and the tech to stay a step ahead. It's more than an SUV. It's your Equinox. Chevrolet. Together, let's drive. Pepsi Prebiotic Cola. An original and cherry vanilla. That Pepsi taste you love with no artificial sweeteners and three grams of prebiotic fiber. Pepsi Prebiotic Cola. Unbelievably Pepsi. It's the fighting.

0:49It's the fighting. Cock! It's the fighting. It's the fighting. Cock! A camel turner! Hello and welcome back to the Fine Cop Podcast. Today is Thursday, it's Q &A Thursday, it means we answer your questions in probably the most original podcast format in the history of man. How are you doing, John? I'm alright, mate. I'm not too bad. You're slowly building that tense panic that I'm feeling towards the weekend? It doesn't sort of build, it sort of never goes away really, mate. It's just sort of sitting there as an undercurrent. Do you know what? I didn't. And we've got Cal, how you doing, mate? Oh, hi.

1:33Sorry, I did end on this. Quickly mention Cal before we get his even ear. No, I... Do you know what I decided, Cal? I decided not to watch the West Ham game. I just couldn't do it. I couldn't take another game where there was massive jeopardy on it. Like, Spurs got it. Obviously, we've got to watch it. Manchester City against Arsenal, you have to watch it. And honestly, watching that on Sunday was worse. Or certainly on a par with watching Tottenham. like I support, I can say this without any hesitation. I 100 % support Manchester City. I am a Man City fan until the end of the season. And do you know what?

2:15Probably next season, basically, whenever Arsenal are involved, it's City. Whenever Liverpool are involved, it's just City. It's because they cheated all their way to it and so you can kind of easily use them. Anyway, so I needed, I watched that and that was a tense game against Arsenal and I just, I was like, I can't do another one. I can't do West Ham on, was it Monday? Yeah, it was Monday, yeah. Yeah, so I managed to kind of, that sort of blind panic has faded away for a bit. My dad had his birthday as well, so I was like, yeah, I felt all right, but now it's back very much right here, right in the chest.

2:49Like that thing when you know you've done something bad at school and you know your mum's going to find out because they're going to call her. Touching it. That feeling, not touching it. For me, it's that feeling of like back in the day. Touching it. Touching it in school. That's not, never got done for touching it in school. For me, it'd be that classic scenario of like when you're a lad and you like stay up late on like a midweek night and you'd be waiting for like the Babe Station previews on cable to come up, right? And those channels, they're only for that one thing, right? so if you forgot to just go back to bbc one and then back to bbc two so when you press backup it just go between bbc one and bbc two and your old dear and your old doris comes down in the morning and goes to you know put on breakfast yeah or you know good good morning bit of lorraine kelly yeah bit of lorraine and then she's going hang on what's this tune in tonight 11 p.m for babe station yeah um it's that feeling when you go oh no oh no yeah yeah yeah so i've got one worse than that when I was about 14, I might've told this on the podcast before, um, my dad and his, his wife, my step-mom, Valerie, who I've talked about quite a lot on this podcast now.

4:04Um, she, they used to go around the pub quite a lot. He used to have mates around there, socialize, and they used to go around there for a few hours. And I'll be like, all right, wicked. Now I'm going to wank. Yeah, boy. Wicked. Wicked. Oh no, you watch them go down the garden path, turn right, and like, right. I think. and um it um bearing in mind back then there was no computers in your room there was no smartphones with access to this stuff there is you had nothing you either had porn that you found somewhere in a bush or on the side of a railway or you'd find your dad's stash and um so cal what are you doing fucking wasp near me sorry weird it's like he's having a stroke or something anyway yeah so and um so i was like so all you had all you had was what you could you could salvage what you could gather what you could muster up it wasn't like you had it the kids these days just don't know i don't actually i would prefer it to go back because when when you got the opportunity to have a pull on your plonker when no one was around with your dad's stash you was alive then boy then you was alive nowadays it's just like i can go to the toilet I open my phone up and then I can see every kind of worst kind of smut.

5:24Now, back then I was like, I've just got what I've got. And that is one video VHS videotape with sex in chalk written on the side of it. Sex?

5:38You know, because you're playing with fire there, because you don't know what that's going to be. The first time you go to put that in the player, in the video player, it's just sex. Oh, go on. But it could be anything. yeah this reminds me a little bit of ricky's story of when um he downloaded his first ever porn from what limewire and it took two days to download and he'd left the computer screen off but the computer on so it continued to download through that time and when it finally finally kept checking on it kept checking on it it finally went to a hundred percent and it it clicked on the file and it was just five minutes of cum shots with the music it's out of control flashing lights and different colors she's out of control just like come come shots everywhere yeah she's out of control anyway um i can't finish my story sorry so so um so i've gone they've gone they've gone down the pub and i've run upstairs and i'm like i know where the point is so i've gone i've got i've lifted my dad's jumpers and It was under the jumpers.

6:46It was always there. I had to remember exactly what position it was so he wouldn't know that I've nicked it. Anyway, I jumped down, put it into the VHS player. Now, younger audience probably might remember this. Maybe they will. It just goes... Like mechanisms. Then it would drop and it would take, I'd say eight seconds to get the VHS in there. I press play. I pull my trousers down. I turn the volume up on the massive CRT television. and they'd fucking come back and people will know at that time i didn't you don't have the time to turn this off to get rid of the evidence so the only thing is i could think is how do i minimize the impact of what i'm doing because i'm not getting out of this and my plan was and bear in mind it's like 13 my plan was to turn the television off which you i don't know if we had a remote maybe we had a remote and then just lie on my belly on the floor of the living room and that's what they found they found me lying face down on the living room floor because my dad forgot his wallet anyway what was yours yeah you just triggered something in my brain so in my uh house i had like me it was me my mom and my sister and i'd go to my dad's at the weekend right my dad's at the weekend had my two older brothers so they were always up to a fucking madness and like telling me all sorts of shit and one of the things my older brother used to do he's like oh yeah what is quality what you do is you just have a like a vhs tv you know the ones that are like built in and he goes and if there's any sex scenes i just record off the telly so i can watch them later right and i was like that's fucking genius it's like because you've loads you know that now they're like there's less inventors because everything's just like digital and that you don't have to overcome anything and that's why nothing gets invented really because we just become lazy as a species well that's what it was like creative ways to like think about wanking so i got bought one year a secondhand tv that had a built-in vhs and i started getting so good at this when i was watching like mole flanders or like one of these shows yes i knew when the sex scenes were going to come i was ready queued up and i would spend more time recording stuff to wank to later than actually wanking to it in the moment which is a good lesson for anyone so that you know i had this tape in there for for years right and it was just like 10 seconds 30 seconds 20 seconds of just like movies and sex scenes from so it was like an archive it was like a sexy adam curtis b-roll if you know what i mean just like loads of just random stuff and i had this tape thing for years then when i finally moved out my mom's like what do you want to do with this tv and i was just like i'll just just give it away or just give it to someone or whatever forget about it a couple of months later i'm like mom what did you do with that tv she went oh i gave it to one of the neighbor's kids it was like 10 and this fucking tape was still in there because i never took it out obviously so it's there to record so now some little kid who lived next door to me the first time he'd gone oh what does this do and press play on the tape and my mum's neighbors at the time would have just had a collection of saucy and interesting sex scenes what i find what incredible i mean i i remember i was given a spool of the of of CDs with dirty movies burnt into them.

10:01Nice. A spool of them. Do you remember that? Like 100 CDs on a spool. Yeah, I had that. Took a while to get through that one. This episode of the Finecock Podcast is sponsored by NordVPN. 11:00Like pigs looking for truffles. We found a couple of old copies of Fiesta and a hedgehog with no eyes in one trip. Wow. At peak time. Hedgehog with no eyes from looking at the copy of Fiesta. I hope, I mean, if you want to know the answer, I think crows pecked its eyes out. Yeah. Just one final bit on this before we actually get into the football. what member I won't tell you I'm not going to tell you the name this is a pop quiz put them in the comments below on Spotify you might remember this sorry what member who has been part of the fighting cock used to cut out page three pages and put them in a book and then splay them out in front of him

11:49before can be in the act of the mortal sin of masturbation. Yeah, let us know in the comments below. If you get it right, I don't know, you'll get a shout out next week and we'll try and get him on to explain himself. Right. Have you heard the news about Sebastian Kel? He's the leading contender to become Spurs' co-sporting director alongside Johan Langer. He's been at Borussia Dortmund for four years as the sporting director. The problem isn't him really, is it? The problem's like, the word alongside. What is it the world wants him gone? We need a head on a stick. We need one. Which is what it's Langer's head on the stick we need, right?

12:31You can't have both, V-Night and Langer. Maybe you could, but it's definitely Langer's head on a stick.

12:39Imagine Kel, I mean Kel turning up and go, he goes, oh, you're going to be working with Johan. Hello. Should we sign some players now? It's like, I don't know. I'm just not sure why the leaders of the club, the owners of the club, they just can't see obvious things that are in front of them. And you're right, someone has to be held accountable for the scenario that we find ourselves in. And this scenario is like, yes, there's overarching bigger picture things that we all know about, right? The wage structure's not been right for a long time. the way that we haven't sold players at the right time that we could like all of these like bigger picture problems still exist but there's been like short-term things in within just this season that have like really massively impacted the reason that we're in this mess right one is hiring thomas frank two is not firing thomas frank when it was apparent that he wasn't the right man for the job three was the january transfer window where we didn't spend on the right players right like Connor Gallagher was a lot of money, but we didn't spend the right players and we didn't replace Brennan Johnson and Kudus gets injured and we didn't then bring someone in at that point.

13:52And then not firing Frank until after that window so that anyone you bring in is like, well, I don't even have a transfer window now, so I'm stuck with this hobgoblin squad. Like, what sense does this make? Bringing in Igor Tudor instead of bringing in a permanent manager at that point or trying to get De Zerbi then, which would have given us more games. So the only thing that they've done right in that entire time is gone, De Zerbe is quite a good manager. Maybe we could get him. So those two, the Chuckle brothers, Vinay and Langer, decide between you. I feel like they should do it like in Dark Knight in Batman, where he snaps the pull cues and puts it in one of their hands.

14:29He's like, we've only got a position for one. One of them two has to go. Someone has to be held accountable, and it's got to be one of those two. We don't know who's making the calls on what in regards to all that stuff that I've just said. but it's one of them two and so something's got to happen because this is nuts if they both survive this you got any issues with it yeah um yeah i think that the word that's triggering us all is the co is working alongside that's the bit that's just triggering everyone because it's just been quite clear the the amount of money that we have spent it's a lot we spent like what 500 million pounds in the last couple of years um and this group of players are just not up to it and you know and i've been saying for a couple of weeks even if we stay up we should sell 15 players that is a poor squad and a bad group and johan langar is responsible for that ultimately because he's the one that's that's scouted and signed them all um i think the thing at Tottenham right now is just a complete there's no kind of football people it's we've we've loaded up our boardroom of all these suits and all these people from Man City and the only people that really have experience of running football clubs are Vinay and Langer and it's almost like they're they're protecting each other and protecting their own skin and so those two at the at the minute because they're the only ones that have real football experience it's I remember Jamie Redknapp saying about Daniel Levy, his view on football is shaped by the last person he spoke to.

16:05And I imagine this lot are even worse because this lot even have less experience than what Daniel Levy does in terms of running a football club. So they're going to listen to Vinay and they're going to listen to Langer because they're the football people, if you like. They're supposed to. But they don't, perhaps what the board don't realise is that they're them two with a fucking problem. Like, they're the problem. Yeah, I I've said this a few times. I'm sure it's getting irritating now. I think it's less a Venn concession problem and more a Langer problem. But we got into this on the episode of the lab yesterday that I did with Kish.

16:42And we were talking specifically about the moment where Daniel Levy was talking to Jose Mourinho in All or Nothing. And it was clear in that moment, no matter how influential and how big a figure he was still super enamored by the presence of jose and marino and marino was almost dismissive of him and it meant that he would listen yeah um venkatesham and less so langer but venkatesham would probably sit down in a room with thomas frank and actually be persuaded by him and i think i probably would be too if i sat down with thomas frank for an hour and taught football you probably would be able to persuade me that he was the greatest coach ever lived and no one notices it but there has to be this barrier between or there has to be the structure that exists that the Lewis's feed into Vino feeds into a supporting director of Merit and he feeds into Deserby I'm actually thinking though that Deserby fills this role like if he keeps us up if he stays all this thing he's such a powerful character that there is massive opportunity for him to take control.

17:59In the long run, it's risky because we could, you know, he could get fed up or he goes badly or he gets scouted by another club. Barcelona come in on one in, whatever it might be. And then you're left with a massive gaping Deserby hole. And if he's terrible, you're left with a gaping Deserby hole, which you have to fill with something else. But this has always been like the risk, right? and I've been quite encouraged about this idea of going, if you've got this really good manager that you think has this certain philosophy and way of playing and you don't have a strong structure, which we clearly don't, because as discussed, Vinay and Lange are not really holding up their end of the bargain.

18:45But having someone who's got a clear vision of what they want to do from a footballing perspective and bringing in players that suit their system, you can still then go, well, okay, De Zerbi's gone to Barcelona. Fine. Well, who's the next De Zerbi? who fits that style of play who like is looking to play in the same way and therefore will suit the players the director of football thing is like every club the manager decided what players were signed for years decades and then innovations happen in football and teams started to go right maybe if we brought in someone above that to make more decisions holistically that would work and it has worked but let's not pretend now pretty much all clubs have a director of football well they're not all successful so it's not like a magic bullet where that's the only way to work we've had a director of football we've had teams and it's been terrible so it's not a guaranteed like solution that means that it will be that it's the better way it's just one way for clubs to go and i think what we've demonstrated is that we're not really suited to the like data model of like a brighton brentford type club we're just not suited to that because the expectations are different the culture of the club is different there's a just a different philosophy of the way that the club and the fans and the sort of entity that is Tottenham like needs to be successful and I actually think we were kind of better when we were had managers who had that sort of I want to be the manager not a coach and so going back to that is encouraging to me so I think that could be quite interesting yeah I mean I don't care I don't care about I just want it to work so if it is deserved give him the keys, let him make it work for as long as possible and that's where we're at.

20:23I think a different football club like Manchester United or another would have a different structure and they'd be worried about the impact of having a manager with that much sway but I don't think we're in a position where we can even, we've got to do something. And if he's here now, does Erby, so you have to give him freedom to behave and do what he wants in a way that he, that would, gives him the freedom to achieve what he wants to achieve. I think the other thing is, is, There's probably an element of Vinay protecting his own skin by keeping Lange there because Lange is the face of the football side of the club.

20:58He's the one that goes out and does the interviews after every transfer window and talks about why we didn't sign players and all that sort of stuff. He's out there to support us. He's the one that's responsible for the football team. If Vinay gets rid of him, it exposes him then. He's the next target. People want to go, all right, we sacked him and we're still shit. So we get into next season. So we stay up. We get to next season and we're fucking 14 for whatever. he's exposed then he becomes the next target for us it's like what's this fucking goon is still doing at our club kind of thing and i think that'd be a fair challenge i think you know maybe we just have to there's always this kind of idea that when you hire a sporting director or director of football that the coach works for them and perhaps we've deserved we've we've thrown a five-year contract at him a huge a huge contract in terms of financials maybe we need to reverse that power where if we do bring in a technical director or someone that's going to negotiate transfers or help scouting or whatever, they work for De Zerbe, not the other way around.

21:55I've heard a couple of rumours. You hear a lot of stuff and it's nonsense, but De Zerbe won't stay if we go down. I don't believe it. You've signed a five-year deal. What do you mean? There's no break laws. It was stated that there was no break laws. I can't see it happening. It just seems like a weird point. right like if he's gonna quote unquote gonna leave then then he would have insisted on the break clause if there isn't one then he can't yeah sure he can moan and grumble and then he loses yeah so what was the point like it just doesn't really make any sense look again it's the same thing if he does he does like if he doesn't want to be here with us like fine just let's move on find someone else who does want to be with us like that's the simple way of it i would prefer it if we do go down that he stays and helps build us back and build us back stronger in his image that's what I thought he was signed up to but it's like with any player with any manager any executive if you're not into this just leave because we need everyone pulling in the right direction especially in moments of you know transition like this we're going to need everyone pulling in the same direction so hopefully it's not true hopefully we're going to get 15 points and we're going to win all five games get 15 points and stay up anyway so I think we're staying up it's kind of a moot point to be honest it is a moot point I think you're right Kyle I think we're staying up yep I think five out of five easy work.

23:12I feel completely relaxed, not nervous at all now that you've said that. Good. Yeah. Glad to help. Let's do some questions then. Brown Boy Coy says, not a question, but a petition that in the case we go down, in the case we go down, for extra revenue, the lads should open up an OnlyFans and call it the Big John Arse show. That's good. You had a bit of a weird encounter this morning, didn't you, John? I did. Yeah. I did uh so I in my like day job let's say I basically like do what's called like fractional leadership so I work with businesses who don't want to employ an executive full-time they want someone for like a couple of days a week to like help with strategy and oversee stuff right so I basically work for myself and so I was looking for like a solution to like find some more business and more companies to work with and so like today was like a bit of an introduction call to a new company that like help people right they're called scale wise i give them a shout out so if you're a fractional leader and you need some help go to speak scale wise scale wise so i so i joined this call and like it's a zoom call so like everyone's joining you can see the little heads and the names at the top right and i've got my name like always have like john bass like full name and then um gavin shout out to gavin who is one of the co-fans of scale wise he goes oh john bass he goes that's funny there's a podcaster called john bass and i was like yep that's me and he's like what he's like big john bass on the call what the hell was he supposed to be was it other people on the call it's other like revenue leaders fractional leaders like senior people on the school um and it was just it caught me off guard obviously because i'm just like in work mode like right i just need to make some notes like think about how this is going to help and then he's just like oh my god i love the pod i love the boys like this is quality and then he was like oh should we talk about spurs and i was like yeah like if you want like everyone else is going to be well annoyed but this is great uh so it was it was lovely so yeah big shout out to gavin made me feel very welcome on the call but yeah it did it did catch me off guard i wasn't uh gotta get a job now ain't you gotta get a job now well hopefully he did he did he did say he's like oh everyone else should probably you should probably drop off this call because i'm just gonna give john all the work it's just done it's done i bet all the other people i was on this call this morning right I was looking for some fractional directional leadership work and the bloke just went there's a gig with John Bass and he loved each other it was so weird obviously because like in the context of normal stuff it's like outside of the Spurs universe or even just like the fighting cock like that I'm just I am just a normal person like I'm just nobody it's not like you know a minor celebrity where you'd go oh it's that guy like they have no I'm just a normal bloke and they're like who cares and how do you do the rest of that meeting so well the rest of the meeting there's a bit weird to do like your introductions and thankfully gavin let me go last so that you know they could forget about it so i just was like i just tried to keep it professional as possible we caught up afterwards and i was like let's because he lives down the road from me as it goes so we're going to catch up for like coffee and stuff but it was quite a funny moment yeah that was funny well shout out gavin and shout out scale wise um okay uh what did he say yeah i mean so the big the big john asked i mean how much would you pay yeah that's that's the most important thing i'll do anything honestly honestly john i've got to say i can't think of anything worse than looking into your ass yeah it'd be horrible it's a horrible sight it's you know them you ever seen june you know those big things the big worms it's like that in reverse like you're falling into it um it's not it's not particularly nice although i have i have on many occasions thought about like there is a huge market for sort of bears in the sort of gay porn scene yeah and i'm like that's just there's just money on the table there that i'm leaving that maybe i need to get what would you have to do i mean i'd struggle to i'd struggle i think like if you were going gay for pay and you weren't homosexual the easiest thing would just to take it right yeah but i'm thinking about going lower level than that i'm thinking like you because you know with any sort of content you've got to go as niche as you can so i'm thinking it's like uh straight like straight guy bear for gays right yeah i'd love gaming and get a kick out of this like straight bloke just doing straight stuff so i'll be like even though i'm terrible at diy right like sort of hammering stuff into a wall with my top off hang on so you don't you're not doing anything no it's like think about like only fans yeah only fans i'm just doing that's true normal stuff that people have got a kink for just seeing a straight man and you know they like hairy people won't know that John's hairy he has a hairy body and he even has hair over his buttocks like as much like the similar length to the hair on his head wow it's like a chew back up it's consistent yeah consistently long hair it's like a King Charles King Charles Spaniel just like a little like tail at the back yeah once he's in a shower he comes out and he all just shimmers yeah alright I mean it's something to think about United Post he says if Manchester City won the league and Spurs ended up in the relegation zone at the end of the season would you accept a massive Man City points deduction to save us but hand Arsenal the title right so he's basically saying if they get punished for their points and come down save us from relegation but hand Arsenal the title would you take that probably yeah because we were talking about this the other day weren't we and someone was saying just have a little asterisk it's an asterisk title they didn't win it they didn't really win it yeah they want it by default which is quite crap they're freaks so they'd still be like nah you'd always have something to get them with yeah they they they also need the respect from fellow fans I think they need it would you would you take it yeah initially I shook my head because like no I don't want them winning the league but I think you guys have changed my mind yeah I think an asterisk title they'd get like a a bronze replica or a plastic one that they get it wouldn't be the real title it would just be a bit plastic yeah so I could probably live with it and we'd still be in the league so yes I would probably take that yeah I'm going to go back to Reddit for the questions shout out Arquoise who is the player of the season from Yokbo

29:35someone's replied here and said grey that geezer that geezer who gave Thomas Franklin a goon a cup yeah it helped usher him out the door a little bit quicker didn't it good to ease says has to be really grey which is wild because the two players I think come out of this season which can credit are Danso and Archie grey probably aren't in our best 11 do you think Xavi's reputation has increased or he's sort of stayed the same is it worse I think his last two starts have been, correct me, Brighton and Atletico Madrid. Yes. He's got three goals and an assist and we've got a win and a draw. And I look at that as a fan and think to myself, it's criminal that he hasn't been getting used as much as he should in a team that has been crying out for creativity all season.

30:32In a transfer window where we spent 30 million and 200 grand a week on the midfielder we already had five times over. to have a player like Xavi Simmonds spend most of the season. Yes, he's been poor a lot of the time, but he's a creative outlet and it's a team that has been starved of creative outlets all season. I think those last two performances really just shine a magnifying glass on the coaches that we've had that have just not been using him. I would caveat that with he must be a terrible trainer. He must be awful in training. It's the same with Tell, actually, because consistent coaches do not pick those two.

31:11They've not been getting picked. Even though when they come on the pitch, they play quite well. They must be awful in training, both of them, because they consistently don't get picked by coaches. I do think there's also an element with Xavi, which is like he's been sort of punished by circumstance because if you bring in coaches that are more interested in like defence and recovery and position and like that kind of stuff, and let's be honest, that's a weak part of Xavi's game. They obviously don't trust him to do that. And so more often than not, even though we're all looking at going, this is crying out for this type of player, they're going to go into what they consider to be more safe.

31:50They'll go to players like that more often because they think, well, this is the right thing to do for the way we want to play. Whereas, hopefully now with De Zerbi, there is an element of like, well, we're only going to really get out of this by outscoring people and winning games by scoring goals rather than trying to be tight at the back. and so you have to have him involved in order to get more out of it and I think the next step is that Tell needs to be sort of incorporated into that system instead of like a Mawani for example who's not really offering much either way. So this is why it's frustrating about Deserby because I feel like had he been given 10 games this would not be even a question.

32:25It feels like there's been improvement as well. Definitely. Who said it? If this had happened 10 games ago if he got the job we tried to get him if you pre-report then we wouldn't be in this situation I don't think no definitely not like the improvement from his first game to the Brighton game was was really quite big and if you get that same level of improvement again then we will win more games than we lose in this run and like it should be acknowledged that this is a really good Brighton's team yeah exactly in huge form look I mean I know Chelsea are a bit of a mess but they absolutely destroyed them.

33:05Just didn't know what to do. Did you watch that game? No. They just killed them. They pressed them. They didn't let them breathe. It was almost like they saw a wounded animal and they just put their foot on their throat for 90 minutes. That's what it was like. And I was like that. They were just sensational. I was like, we should have beaten this lot. So, I know football doesn't quite like that, but I was really gutted that we conceded in the last minute to Rata, but I was encouraged by the performance overall and I thought if we can do that again if we can play that again against Wolves on Saturday then we might be in for a good spot.

33:43If Vicario is back Cal does he get back into the team? Or have you seen enough from Kinski? No I wouldn't put him back in the team I just don't think he suits the way we play I just don't and I think no I would leave Kinski in goal and we should I haven't found anybody or spoke to anybody who would say we want Vicario back nah we should be looking to sell him in the summer as well regardless of what happens we should be looking to sell him just a bad he makes the occasional blinding save but the rest of the time I think he's just a poor goalkeeper to be honest and like I think John makes a good point about circumstances this group of players it's they've just it's been a really I can imagine as players it must be a really hard club to play for, really tough environment.

34:33You know, you've got a coach like Ange winning Europa League. Then Frank comes in totally different, Tudor. And then last season with winning Europa League and Ange said himself about, you know, basically throwing the league second half of the season. The culture and what's acceptable at the club has just been changing with every coach. But there's just been a culture of it's been okay to lose football matches for far too long. and I think and I would I'd look to sell 10 to 15 players in the summer I think it needs a complete reach because there's just so many I think there's just too many bad habits there now I think I don't disagree with you I just I always love it how like cutthroat you are when it comes to transfers we need 10 in we need 10 in generally the first we need to sell 15 sell 15 by 25 you should be a Marseille I'm a Marseille fan this is what they do every transfer window the I would implore you to go and listen to the podcast I did with Kish because we really broke down this season and why things have gone the way, well, why we think things have gone the way they are and why the players haven't performed and the different types of messaging.

35:37And the podcast I did with Dan Abrahams talking about the impact of losing key leaders in the dressing room like Kane and Son and others. You can't underestimate how impactful that is.

35:54Typical contest, he says, thoughts on putting a petition together to ban Sky from showing the most goals for table every time we have a set piece or a corner. It's a kiss of death. They've got to caveat it by saying it was when Frank was in charge. We haven't scored one since he left. It doesn't matter. This is why these narratives, they build them up. Oh no, actually they're really good at set pieces. We haven't scored a set piece since fucking January. We're not good at set pieces anymore. The Sky propaganda is at another level with Alan Smith in the West Ham game. like literally cheering them on like in the middle go on go on it was like mate it was mental it was so it was so blatant it was absolutely outrageous go on go on West Ham please please please please get them gone I would actually prefer that than pretending to be unbiased yeah yeah yeah please West Ham please just for me it's a bit like remember that game it was also West Ham the Paul Stelteri winner oh no to mistake it still sounds odd like what do you mean oh no what do you mean we just got a winner in a massive mental derby like one of the best games ever that is that is a classic that game we were 3-1 down yeah and there's like three kicks off the bar there's like worldy goals it was a quality game they were 3-1 down they brought it down to 3-0 and then we won 4-3 it's Paul Stout Terry oh no what the fuck the commentator going oh no instead of, oh my God, they've done it.

37:55What a win. It was, oh no, Spurs have done it. It's interesting, isn't it? Was that Alan Parry or something like that that was the commentator that day? You're right. It was like, I think we were two and up. I think they went three-two, Bobby Zemore went three-two. That's right. Berbatov three, three, and then Stouteri four, three. But it's interesting, isn't it? The comparison of, you got the feeling that year that they felt bad for West Ham, that they could be going down because I think that was perhaps the first time in a while that they would have been relegated. But with Tottenham, it feels like Sky Sports are rubbing their fucking hands together.

38:32Like, yeah, get these bastards down. How dare they try and break the glass ceiling for all these years? Let's get them gone. It just, it feels like a totally different energy. I don't think it's as bad of an energy as Arsenal feeling, to be honest, because everyone's just outright, out, just outwardly just going, I hate Arsenal. I hate them. I hate them. Yeah. but they brought that on themselves right like that this is the the main difference is there there aren't like prominent people in the spurs like let's say fanosphere i don't know if that's a word but i've just coined it in the spurs fanosphere that are like out there going oh we're the best team we're never gonna get like giving it absolutely loads like even your iconic moment of the like just you wait we're still just you wait not we're gonna win your shit we're the bet it was like well let's wait and see basically but we might win right so that was there like talking about parades like months ago and like winning the quadruple it's like boys you haven't won anything for ages like just try and win one thing you're worried about the quadruple but theo walcott on sky saying to wait literal wayne rooney you had a brilliant team in 08 that won a treble and won everything and fucking smashed everyone to bits that had ronaldo Tevers of Rooney as your front three do you think this Arsenal side how do you think you'd get on against them and like Rooney quite rightly just cracked up in his face he's like we'd batter them we'd batter them obviously where was that on the overlap it was no it was it was an Arsenal game and Arsenal like won or something like 3-0 or whatever it was and Wolcott was going yeah obviously like you know the 08 side you were in was brilliant but probably the best team I ever played against how do you think you'd get on against this current Arsenal side like deadly as if to say They're so incredible.

40:15And Rooney just went, we'd batter them. And he was deadly sick. He was like, we'd batter them. And I was like, they would batter them. I've got a lot of time for Rooney, actually. Love Rooney. Yeah. I do like him.

40:30Additional Farmer says there's been a lot of talk about damning people's fathers to hell for forcing them to follow this whole Spurs mess. But spare a thought of those who follow internationally who could have picked any team in the world and willingly and knowingly chose Spurs. Yeah. Fair play. I've made the same mistake. No one in my family even likes football, let alone fucking Spurs. When I was really little, like everyone that grows up outside with no... I was like, I may be Man United then. So all my friends bought Man United. Then I was like, when I got old enough to understand it, I was like, I've picked Spurs because of my mates, Nick and Carl and Luke primarily.

41:08And now what? How do you say apparently that you're not giving Luke? Well, no, I'm saying that those three, but that's the reason I support Spurs, apparently. I thought Luke was someone claiming it or something. But you weren't going to give it to him. Luke, apparently. He's thrown his name in the hat. You know that big John Basher, yeah, the only reason he supports Spurs is because of me. Who's saying that? Luke, apparently.

41:42standing there shouting in birds' ears in the nightclubs going know that big John Bass I don't want to Spurs me it's because of me what's a John Bass what are you talking about yeah what are you talking about you're talking about that guy from Set I

41:56I would change I would change things that have happened to Spurs and how we've gone about it and who runs our football club and but I don't care what happens man I don't I wouldn't I wouldn't dream of ever... I just couldn't belong to anybody else. I don't care whether we go down. I mean, I care. It hurt. But my love for Spurs will just be exactly the same as what it is now. And when I say Spurs, I'm talking about the shirt, the badge. I'm not talking about the employees or the custodians or the... I'm talking about you lot and my mates and my family and my dad. That's all. That will never change.

42:33We don't deserve it. No. We're gaslit. but it is what it is nice possession says do you think they'll drop season ticket prices if we go and if so what's a fair price for a season ticket in the championship Better Call Tool says they'll stay the same and we'll be gaslit into thinking it's better value with the extra games included I mean technically it is Tom but I'm pretty sure that's not what you want to hear right now and they'll probably end up making more money in ticket sales by increasing the away allocation for all fans who want to stay in a stadium I think they should do that yeah charge them 100 quid each yeah 200 yeah because there's a cap on 30 pound in the Premier League but it doesn't exist in the Championship nice so

43:22there is there is precedence for both most clubs do reduce the cost of the season to hit I can't imagine Spurs doing that they will just say they'll say you're getting more games really I just I think they'll go you think they'll reduce it I think they'll just say we're not going to increase. Yeah, we'll just freeze it. I don't think you have a choice. I think you have to reduce it. That stadium's never going to sell out again. What would you reduce it to? I don't know. I might be completely misunderstanding. What would you happily pay? I might be completely misunderstanding this and I have no knowledge of football economics at all.

44:00But as a supporter, well, you just have to look at the stadium and the trajectory of our, even if you just look at like average attendances for the last two years, it's gone down and gone down gradually. And we know we've seen games of like 45 ,000, 49 ,000, 49 ,000 in the Champions League for fuck's sake when we played Copenhagen. We're going to do well to get 40 ,000, 45 ,000 against Lincoln City at home. Why would you even buy a season ticket? To me, it's the sport that makes no fucking sense to buy a season ticket now if you're in the championship. For what? you don't the only reason to buy one is so you can go to away games for people that go to away games other than that what's the fucking point because you can get a ticket for any game you like because the stadium is never going to fucking sell out again it's not the attitude is it it makes no fucking sense so it has to be you'd have to go half price I'd buy one if it was half price you would what's what's the most expensive season ticket in a championship I feel like they'll bring it in line with that and go we have existing overhead costs we didn't plan for plus we want to be in line with you know the the bigger clubs in the league blah blah blah like but i i imagine that's probably quite a big drop and i don't i just don't think they can afford that okay here we go this is the answer uh so when clubs drop from the premier league to efl championship they often make some gesture on season ticket pricing but varies a lot depending on finances ownership strategy and fan pressure price fees is a most common clubs keep prices the same rather than cutting them.

45:28Logic revenues have already taken a huge hit, so they can't afford to drop two. Some make small reductions 10 to 20%, so modest cuts as a gesture of goodwill. These tend to happen when fans are protesting or brewing. The protests are brewing. Big reductions, rare but happens. Occasionally, clubs go aggressive to keep their tendencies high. Leeds United dropped prices significantly when they got relegated in 2023. Let's see what we also did. let's see just join the League One how good was that how small time are we how small time are we that all of us will say I'm going fuck off you're in League One now it's a cautionary tale though I don't know if someone posted it in the Fighting Cock group or somewhere else but their squad list I'm like I know basically every player in that team right because if you show me other championships I ain't got a clue who anyone is so I'm like it's a cautionary tale of you know if we do go we do really have a lot of work to do to get it right because you can what I'm saying is it's often not the players John not at least all the players are good players to be playing at this level it's the structure it's the environment they're playing in what you mentioned Cal so what are they hearing what is what message did Daniel Levy send to the players when he gave them a watch before the Champions League final all of those things so winning isn't the be all and end all not signing players how I don't know yeah going over the same things but yeah It is a cautionary towel, although James Alcott has informed me that if we keep even half this squad, we should absolutely win the league.

47:03We're not going down, though, so it won't be well. No, exactly. Five out of five. No worries. JDes, he says, if we stay up, do you think this horrific season will spur the board to actually act and bring in some quality players on good wages so we could genuinely challenge for trophies next season, or do you think they'll continue as they are because we stayed up? So just further to that, do you believe Venkatesham when he put his words in print before the West Ham game and saying we are going to do these things, we are going to change the wage structure, we are going to invest in the team and it's going to be different?

47:37Lewis family apparently have also said things to that effect. Do you believe them? Especially because after that we went through January without signing anybody. Do you believe them? If we stay up, will they invest more than what Daniel Levy would have done? Well, that's hard to know, right? Because we don't... At the minute, based on what I've seen, I don't believe them, no. Because in my mind, they've had plenty of opportunity. And I was quite positive about this scenario because it was like, remove Levy, they're coming in, they're going to want to put their imprint on, make a difference. They were making all the right noises, right?

48:17Including that statement around, we're going to change the wage structure, just do it then like you don't need there's no need to delay you got to january it's not like we were sort of flying along like that would have been the time to go like right let's let's demonstrate this and i think when conor gallagher got signed people were like oh shit like that's a pretty big name pretty big money pretty big wages if we sign another three or four like that this will be great right and then they just went oh no that's it we haven't panicked thanks very much and you're like no you're doing the same you're making the same mistakes that levy was making which is like oh this good player has become available therefore that's a good signing versus look at the wider context of what you need from a footballing perspective and get it done so yeah i just think like at this moment in time they've they've given us nothing to demonstrate that they're going to do it it's always it is always that like jam tomorrow whatever the phrases of kind of like, we're going to do this thing.

49:14It's like, well, just do it then because there's no time to wait. And this season has been the perfect time to have gone, right, we're going to show you because we actually needed it in that moment and they failed at the first hurdle. So I don't believe them for one second. And if we stay up, my worry would be that instead of looking at all the mistakes that we listed at the beginning of the pod, they'll go, yeah, we appointed Deserby and that worked. We're fucking brilliant. back to normal lads like there's no there's no issue now we've got Deserby he kept us up look how brilliant we are at making these decisions I don't think they'll go shit like we have to completely overhaul the whole squad again I think he would hold them to account like he would leave I hope so I hope he doesn't leave but I hope he doesn't allow it to happen yeah there's going to be one or two players that want to go and I think you know Deserby's probably not going to stand in their way I don't care about any of them no none of no there isn't Archie Gray is probably the only player that I would say please stay but other than that and even him you know you can fuck off as well you little twink like all of them to be honest like starts giving it beans and like oh I don't want to go like fuck you can fuck off as well then you mug you're like oh I'm sorry you're like fuck off but the noise the noises are well the noises are a little concerning aren't they because we've already been linked with two Bosmans already Marcus Sensei and Andy Robertson as well the noises before this kind of relegation crisis really got going was that this summer was going to be a big summer wasn't it it was like we're going to change the way to shut up we're going to throw some big big money down the club are going to invest but the issue is we're not going to be in europe next season like unless they bring the fair play back and even now then we win that because we get four bookings a game anyway because they just don't fucking like us um so yeah it's a couple of Bosmans probably not no I know I think if they're looking at but I'm happy for us to go into that Bosman market we don't do it enough we never really have no I mean that's I don't that's proactive yeah I think it's good sign yeah yeah but it's all dependent on what what happens isn't it um there was a question here it's the right time to ask it but I can't find the name of the person who sent it in but you said if you could just keep three players to take down with us what three would you take uh i can answer this one quite quickly i would go danso center back archie gray center midfield and dominic solanke center forward if you got them three in the championship you'll do pretty well you can build around that i'd probably agree with that i don't think danso is that good but in a championship he'd be fucking unbelievable like the elite in that.

52:01And like, there's other players you can interchange, but they're like, senior and decent players in those positions. Like Solanke, I know people are like, oh, well, he'll go definitely. I'm like, but he did that with Bournemouth before, right, when he went down, scored a shit load of goals to get him back up and then, like there's, you know, we can't just get rid of everyone because there has to be a certain level of consistency and like, you know, you do need a decent striker where Charleston's made of biscuits. So like, I'd be looking to keep Solanke. I don't know how long he's left on his deal.

52:33So yeah, I'd probably do that. Solanke's a good shout to be fair. Solanke, Archie Gay and weirdly Xabi Simmons. I think he has a top player in there and I think he's just waiting to go. Imagine what he'd do in the championship. He'd probably get kicked up in the air but he'd do bits. Like for proper attacking coach he'd do bits in the championship. He'd probably got 20 goals himself. Like I think Danso, I think until last week I always used to call him and the elite backs of the wall defender win like the Europa League final. Think about Europa League, how good he was in that Europa League final.

53:04He's immense. And I think you're right, Flav. I think he'd be great in the championship. But I want a bit, it's Tottenham in it. I want a bit of flair there. So I'd probably pick Solanke, Simmonds and Archie Gray. Simmonds would be great, wouldn't he? Yeah. Find his level. Nice. Lucky Lavender says, who's in the Fighting Cop WhatsApp group? Just the people that appear on the pod.

53:30I think one final question because he's 64 years old and I love the fact that there was a 64 year old man watching they're listening to this podcast says hi guys super spur 007 hi guys I have seen several posts on various media referencing the Chelsea manager sacking consequent mocking now I hate chelsea chelsea as much as the next man but jason can not but jason jesus can no no one else see what every other team gets a new manager bounce like us but us so i'm saying if there's no people were saying i would be great if uh if you know if he's still there because they'll get this new manager bounce i i don't think statistically there's such a thing you know I think it's I don't think a new manager bounce it's probably 50-50 yeah because of the the quality of the manager like was you did any part of you go ah damn I'd rather have been managing Chelsea when we played them I did but then this morning I saw someone some guy posted a video about basically Chelsea and the hierarchy there and all the people that are there and their new coach Callum McFarlane I think his name is is their new interim coach.

54:46And that guy is not qualified at all. He's probably even less qualified than Rosinha was. Was he going to do it to the end of the season? Yeah, he's doing it to the end of the season and they're going to hire somebody else. They basically just got a load of, I don't know, a load of people in that aren't qualified. And so, no, I think, I thought we was going to go there and beat him. Now I think we're going to go there and batter him because we've got someone even worse. I hope so. I generally thought the bridge was a shoe-in for all three points this year as a 64 year old man I remember being in Div 2 we only just scraped our way back up in the final game at the Dell and it was the best 0-0 draw I'd ever seen my question is are you looking forward to taking six points off of Coventry next season because we are staying up yeah Coise John Carpenter the exiled Spurs go on lad Spur I moved all the way to the Scottish Highlands my neighbours are flipping gooner fucking everywhere aren't they Thank you, John Carpenter, for that message.

55:45We are staying up, and we are going to take six points off of Coventry. And just to add to that Gooner thing, I live in a small town outside of Devizes, a village even, and I'm walking the dog the other day, and I look to the right, and I see a plaque, a red plaque with a cannon, and it says Highbury, of course, yeah. Disgusting. They're just fucking everywhere. Freaks. Just freaks. There's also a Crystal Palace one as well, which is weird. Right. Thank you, John. Thank you, Cal. Thank you, everyone. We sent in the questions. This has been the FightingClock podcast once again, and we'll be back on Monday.

56:28We've also got a preview on Patreon, patreon.com forward slash fightingcock, and yeah, take care. Bye. Bye. Bye. Chocolate rain. Oops.

We’re back for a Q&A and it goes exactly where you’d expect and nowhere you’d predict. From old-school VHS trauma to full-blown relegation anxiety, we try to make sense of Spurs right now and probably fail in the process. There’s talk of De Zerbi, whether anyone at the club is actually accountable, and if this squad needs ripping up completely. We also get into season ticket prices, Arsenal paranoia, and whether we’d accept the weirdest title outcome imaginable just to stay up.
