In short
Tottenham’s transfer-window priorities and squad-building for next season, with debate over whether they should buy a number 10 and/or striker, how much depth they need for injuries, and what league finish targets are realistic without European football. They also discuss the likely sale of key players (especially Cristian Romero) and negotiation strategy in a weak striker market.
Guests (backgrounds)
The episode is a multi-host Tottenham-focused football podcast with three regular speakers (referred to as Cal, Flav, and John). They discuss transfers and tactics using insider-style rumors and match/club analysis, including references to Fabrizio Romano and De Zerbi.
Key claims
- Spurs need technical midfield depth and likely a number 10 (Gibbs-White is the main target).
- They must add a striker/goal threat (Krupp/“Kruppi” is repeatedly pushed; Vlahōvic is mentioned as a “free” option).
- Romero’s attitude/availability issues mean he should be sold for a high fee (around £40–£60m).
- With no Europe, Tottenham should aim for top-four/league title contention.
Notable examples
- Gibbs-White linked as a replacement if Lucas leaves; Tonali/Madison injury concerns used to justify depth.
- Romero criticized for Argentina-focused absences, emotional red cards, and “bully” team impact.
- Early-season points target: 13 from first five fixtures (Brentford away, Newcastle home, Forest away, Spurs Everton home, Villa home).

1:18Cock! It's the fighting. It's the fighting. Cock! I've heard Costco's on the Wayne cow. Is it? Yeah. What happened? I don't know, you pay£42 a year just to go into that shop, you freak. Nah, freak's too harsh. Freak's too harsh. Is that all it is,£42 a year? What do you mean all it is to walk into a shop, you've got to pay£42 a year? It's a fucking scam. Yeah, because if you don't pay, you can't go in, and there's loads of good stuff in there. That's a great model. I wish I did that for more shops. You know what I mean? Imagine Marks and Spencer's, but not everybody could go there. It'd be loads better.
2:00Keeps the riffraff out. Exactly, that's what I'm saying. There's no riffraff going to Marks and Spencer's for fuck's sake. Well, they should go and look at stuff. Waitrose, wherever. I'm just saying if everywhere had some sort of membership fee, that'd be quite, I'd like that. I don't know. Exclusive access to pizza and hot dogs. Like what else do you want? Yeah, you're paying£42 to go and buy hot dogs. Yeah. Yeah. Councilor estate cunt.
2:30I love it. He's simultaneously the bourgeoisie because he's got a membership that not everyone can access, but he's still a council estate scumbag. He uses it like a scumbag. Yeah, I like it. Can I just say, the council estates did wonderful things for many, many people, and without them, many people would be fucked. I was just merely using this as a way to attack my friend unnecessarily. Yeah, it was needless. I'll tell you what we're doing on this podcast, boys. we're looking ahead we're looking to next season we're thinking about what we've got what we might need there'll be no talk about the World Cup you'd be pleased to know zero good zero talk which Ben Bowman's just posted a picture of Gibbs White assigned with Roof as a new agency to represent him and take him to the next steps for future for future chat and from now on terrible terrible language from Fabrizio Romano uh what does that matter if you've got a knife to your throat when making decisions but maybe that's what it is maybe they're not like a real agency maybe they're just the North Jersey mafia and the only reason he's gone there is he's like look I don't really care you can have more than 15 you can take 20 I just need you to protect me against Maranakis that's that's what because I want to leave Forest I want to go Spurs but last time I tried to do that he threatened me so can you get Paulie walnuts and the lads to come and protect me please because I'm scared uh with a midfield that is already stacked is there room for Gibbs White if he was even on the table Cal would you entertain a bid for him now I think we need a 10 I do think we need a 10 um because Xavi's obviously done his ACL and probably went back to January-ish uh James Madison as much as I love him is a stiff breeze away from doing his knee again uh the guy's always injured love him dearly but he's always fucking injured and Kulusevsky is not a 10 he's a right winger and yeah so I think we need a 10 so I'm all up for Gibbs White absolutely yeah let's get him in let's get him in we just need to add technical quality to the middle of the pitch like we've been saying for a long time there just aren't enough technicians there's so many runners and we've got as Cal said we've got technical players who are out injured or are injury prone so having another one in there like does give us a bit of like protection for that and also he's just a really really good player and if you can get him in get him in and figure out the selection headaches later I think like we're becoming obsessed a little bit with this idea that because we might not be in Europe next year that that means that we suddenly have to play like a starting 11 and there's no squad rotation it's just going to be an 11, that's it, and everyone else has to go.
5:20And there'll be no injuries. There'll be no injuries. There'll be no cup games. It's just, they're going to play every game, every second of every game. Did nobody learn anything from the last two years? All of them are getting injured. We need another whole 11. I want to see another 11, 100 million pound players because we're going to need them because everyone's going to get injured. Also, like we're talking about Mateus Fernandes and Tenali midfield, but that was, I mean, Tenali played 29 games in Newcastle last year. Yeah. I think that's right. We need, we need depth. We need to assume that these players are not all going to be available.
5:49Even if you have an average injury record in the season, you're still going to lose key players at some stage. It's rumoured that... So there's a couple of things. I've mentioned this on the podcast release yesterday, the Q &A podcast with Rick. But I've had a... I don't know what I want to say. There are rumours that the Bear of Oval is going and probably to Nottingham Forest. And£45 million is the fee. 38 was said to have been originally bidded and rejected and 45 was the fee and I've I hate saying what I heard but I'm just saying it's been like the same way the Vuscovich deal was done way before it was announced but what's that face for I'm just holding it in so much just to go look at me I know people that know stuff I've got three big people three big people feeding me information nice love that yeah we got we got that for you we've got the source right we've got the tentacle and the new one the gentleman gentleman gentleman's nice and they all they all know different bits alright so if you want me to do you want two sources to corroborate my shit or not yeah no this is no zero source this is just someone who knows who said that the deal was done the tentacle is definitely a danger to women isn't he everywhere it wasn't the tentacle it was the beast that one oh anyway But the point is, if Lucas is going and we replace him with Gibbs White, that's squad building.
7:24Yeah. That's squad building. We are stacked a little bit. You went through the squad at our first 11, our best possible first 11 right now if we don't make any more signings. If Savino feels like he's very close or to be done, it's going to happen. So, you've got Kinski, you've got Van Hecker, you've got Van Venn or Sanessi. You've got Roberson. You've got Doggy. You've got Spence and you've got Porro. I need to chat about Spence after. Then you've got a midfield. Tonali, Fernandes and Madison. You've got Kulisevsky, Kudus, Solanke, Richarlison, Tell, Odebeer and Savinho and Deserbi as coach. There's stuff.
8:12There's a little bit of work to be done But that's about as healthy as we've been going into a season for a long, long time. Yeah. I think, to be honest, mate, it's like we keep talking about the squad is stacked, but it's stacked with numbers rather than stacked with quality. And I think that's what this window we are addressing is like we're sort of turning over players that either are going to be good or we think are going to be good in the future, but they're just not good now and replacing them for players that we think are better right now. And we are also trying to bring in more quality to help the squad.
8:41because again that was one of the issues that we had is that we did have options to bring in but there was such a disparity between the first 11 player that was injured and the young player that's like had to come into that team like for example Berg von der Gray I think most people agree they're going to have a pretty good future in football but the drop-off is just too big for a club of our size to be able to do anything and that's what I want to see addressed this summer and I know it's like difficult but you know if you're looking at players like a Voscovic versus to Van Hecker. Like, maybe Voskovic will go on and be a much better player.
9:12In four or five years, we can't wait that long. So making that upgrade now makes sense. And it would be the same thing for like Morgan Gibbs-White for Bergvot. Like right now, that makes sense because that improves us and drives us forward. And it's exactly the same thing I'd like to see with, say, like, for example, a Richarlison. If you can move him on and bring someone else in who's of a better quality than him, then you're turning over the squad numbers, but you're also just improving quality around the squad. And I think that's really important. This isn't about bodies. This is about like improving the quality of the first 11 and players coming in being much better.
9:49100%. Also, I'm not sure does Zerbi's obsessed over particular players or positions. It's more about how they're going to functionally work in his system. It's so fluid. There's so much that players have to think about. the spaces they have to take up regardless, depending on the situational position of the ball, the situation that a player who is an archetypal number 10 might not necessarily be in the 10 position. In the same way, Posta Coglu never really had a, sorry, Pochettino, still doing it. Pochettino never really had a number 10. You had a fluid movement between at least three forwards in Son, in Eriksen and Dele.
10:36Ericsson and Dele would share the roles and swap out. They'd go wide. They'd drop for each other. I can see something similar to that. So while we do, we'll be just going back to your point, Cal, that we need a number 10. Whoever that is, if when Xavi's back or Madison's back, their role is, let it be less about the individual ability. No doubt we're going to have to rely on that. And the rumors are that Dezerbi has instructed the board to build a team full of sufficient quality so that we can win the league this season. Yeah. And that means that, you know, we might not need to buy that number 10.
11:16We might not need to buy that number nine. I mean, it'd be great if we did. Like someone like Creepy would be incredible. But I think we're going to see a different style of football than we anticipate under De Zerbe, like what he'd done at his previous football clubs. You know, at Brighton, he had Lallana, he had Gross he had I can't remember who else he had but they never they weren't just sort of hanging around the box there was just a lot of movement dynamism to the way he played I think like without question we're going to win the league this year so yeah just about sitting back and enjoying it really which should be a rare thing I would not rule out three at the back us playing three at the back just because we have such depth you know and you've signed Van Hecker and Senesai and you've already got Van de Ven and you've got Danso and for now we have Romero but I suspect he'll get his soul.
12:08That's a lot of centre-backs. That's a lot of good quality and I would not rule out and I think all of our full-backs can play wing-back like no problem at all. Porro especially. Porro is, he is a wing-back. He's become Porro, a world-class full-back but I think in his core he is a wing-back really. I would not rule us out us playing three at the back and then like you were saying, we wouldn't need a 10 then it'd be two 8s and 3-4-3 sort of thing yeah I think this is interesting though right because we've had a really strong start to the transfer window right we're all excited and we're like 100 million pound players like big signings and that's really positive and then you know to your point Flav about you know we're hearing like murmurings that the Zerbi's like well I see an opportunity for us to try and win the league this year and I'd agree with that I think if you look at the league like there is a really good opportunity to do this with no Europe and if you invest properly.
13:01But we will really see if that is true because you don't think about, well, maybe we don't need a 10, just get one anyway. But if you're really serious, if the board are really serious, like they are really going to back it, you don't go, well, maybe we can make do then. Like just get the extra 10, just spend the money. Same with the forward line. It's like, oh yeah, well, maybe we can make do a comeback. We've done, maybe we can make do. We've done that. So if you're really serious about wanting to do it, And again, this is not me shitting on the board because at the minute, the sounds are like, they're going to.
13:31They want a couple more players and they're prepared to spend the money and we're shifting players out so that's making funds available. I'm just saying, I don't want to change my mindset of like, you told us you were serious about doing it. So far, so good. But let's not now, and not that we can do anything, but let's not settle for this. Let's see Morgan Gibbs-White. Let's see Kruppi for 100 million. That's what it takes to get him and you think that's what's going to give you the best chance to win the league, get him now. There might not be another chance in two years' time. So I'm really interested to see if they hold their bottle, basically, and keep going.
14:05Because I think if they do, then I think that is actually the right play because this is a really good opportunity to finish as close to top as possible. So let's see. So we signed Robertson, we signed Sanessi, we signed De Bravka, who's a backup keeper. We've got Van Hecker, you've got Fernandes and Tonali. If they add two more, or would you be comfortable with just adding a left winger in Savino and just going with Solanke? No. No. I think we need a striker. Like, we need Kruppi, basically. I think that would be good. Kruppi's the only one being linked. Like, is there no number nines out there other than him?
14:44Blavitch. Yeah, Karl likes Blavitch. I mean, look, look. He's free. He is a number nine and he's free. I mean, he's not. No-brainer. Go on. Ben Ford was crazy. Sell us Vlachovic then. He's free. He's free. Serbian. He's Serbian. Juve. And he's all right. And he's free. Just look at it like the number nine market is bare right now. Richarlison has a year left on his contract. So we have to sell him. Unless we're going to extend him, which I couldn't... He was our top scorer, I think. unless we're going to extend him we have to sell him right and I think you look at you look at the team now and after all the signings you've just laid out and you go goalkeeper yep he was great Kinski defence fuck me that's strong now huge upgrade on the midfield wicked and then you get to the you get to the forward line you're like wah wah wah it's just like that forward that's not good enough just the nine no the whole lot Kudis is Kudis is a good player but the rest of them tell is fucking Wilson Odebear has had more major surgeries than he scored league goals for Tottenham factually he has scored one league goal for Tottenham in two years and has had two major surgeries do you have any any patients in that obviously we can't buy a whole new squad so some of these players have got to come good do you have any patients that that the De Zerbi will be able to get the potential out of these players that we haven't seen yet.
16:22Other people find Patel to stay. Solanke's fine as well. Odd a bit, like... But in the right set-up, could he not flourish? Just as a squad member, I think that's fine, isn't it? He wasn't any... Okay, right. He wasn't much good to start with, and now he's had a major hamstring injury and a major ACL. What the fuck are we dealing with here? He's just not very good. and everybody wants him to be a thing, but he just hasn't ever been a thing, I'd bomb him out as quickly as possible, to be honest. And that's the area that needs strengthening massively. We really lacked goals last year. Just because people at home might have a different opinion and just which obviously, and I know you're struggling to show this, but you don't care.
17:08I know you don't, but I'm just like when you sometimes listen to a podcast, you wish that someone on the podcast might oppose of you because they feel this way. So my position is that everyone's been shit for two years. Yeah. I think that's a fair point. And I think it's weird for us to have, because I feel a bit sad about Bereval leaving. But then I think, but I guess that's because he's young. And I think we look at these young players and we think, you know, it ain't your fault. Like you're young, you've come to a new league. I know, I know. But these players have been shockingly bad for two years.
17:47So we shouldn't have any real loyalty to them at all. I'd imagine if you as a coach, you'd go in there and go, this is your fault. I hate, yeah. Yeah, I hate your guts. This is your fault. Yeah. I do think that like, most of what Cal is saying is pretty fair, right? And pretty provable based on like how their, like how their performances have been. But I also think what you said, Flav, is true, right? Which is they haven't been playing under De Zervi. in what seems to be a more positive space, a more positive environment. It has been disrupted, blah, blah, blah. So that's fair. I think if we're able to sign Savinho, then on the left side, having basically Savinho as first choice with Tell and Mikey Moore as the rotation options is decent.
18:36But again, if Savinho gets injured, you're back to Tell. Now, I really like Tell and I personally think he will go on to be really good, but it's the same problem I spoke about earlier. It's quite a big drop-off. But I think if you're going to prioritise, rather than saying two Savinho levels for the left-hand side, when we need a nine, I think we need a nine desperately. I do really think we need another one because I think Solanke's a pretty decent player and I think he can function pretty well in a team that's functioning well. He'll link up play really well. But we've seen he's not ruthless.
19:05He's not a killer. And that could be a bit of an issue. And so having a player like Kruppi, Kruppi that's sort of able to score goals and also be quite exciting and can you know potentially be that franchise player in the next few years I think that is that is also quite exciting and then on the other side we're all sort of we I do it all the time which is like you got Kudis you got Kudis you haven't got Kudis like he is done right for the foreseeable anyway like he's not going to be back so the right hand side is as worrying to me because there is no rotation for Kudus on the right side. So, we actually do need a nine, Savino, and another winger.
19:45Like, we do need two wingers, basically, because Odebeer, even if he was available, to Cal's point, he's not ripped up trees, but he's not available either. He's going to be out for ages still. Yeah. Realistically. So, we do need two wide players and a nine. So, we're going to have to spend some serious checks. We can't fucking have everything. We've got loads already. We have more players? Or more? How many more players do you want? I know every squad's got problems, John. Everyone. Pays Checkout is offered by your banks and credit unions. 23:06You should cheat on your wife. He said that. Don't know. Does that, it's just part of the read. Just don't know. And I thought, yeah, that's good advice. Yes, I should do that. That's exactly what I should do. Don't cheat on your wife, but if you're going to, don't get caught. No, if you're going to, use Sally and use your fighting cock code. Otherwise, what's the point? Protect her. Protect her by having a private, having a separate number. Yeah, have some patient feelings. Save her from, yeah, save some hurt feelings. Yeah. No, but can I just be clear? that Saley is for data plans when you travel across 190 countries that they serve and do a brilliant job.
23:40You can save huge amounts of money. Actually, the cost of Saley, once you've used your 15 % discount, fighting cock, when you sign up, means that you'll save it in a single holiday. Yeah, I saved it when I went to the US. I used it. Got a couple of weeks worth of unlimited data. Bang, way cheaper than the charges that I got with my current provider. John goes away a lot so he gets different numbers with different birds it fucking makes me sick he's every two every two minutes he's changing jobs and then he's just going on holiday John does two things changes jobs and goes on holiday that's it yeah that's what I do goes mental on Twitter yeah I don't always go mental on Twitter that's the third you know the third sibling of that little group of stuff that's like the lowest down but yeah yeah but yeah so if you if you want to support the podcast if you want to benefit and save money when you go abroad and not worry about data charges.
24:32You've got kids around the pool and they're moaning. Can I have my phone? I want to watch fucking TikTok. Get a fucking pool, you little cunt. No, if you've got them. Back to the bird, you fucking twat. Yeah, let's have fucking little senior eaters over there. Go and talk to them. You're not having my iPad. Anyway, you don't want to get stung by the charges for them watching guff on brain rot, I think the kids call it, on the old devices. So, Sally will save you money in that respect. You don't have to worry about how often. If you're shit parents and you just want to give your kids phones all day, which categorically I would 100%.
25:06In fact, growing up with kids, going to a restaurant, and you're like, well, no, no, I'm not going to give my kids phones because they're going to learn to sit at the restaurant table and eat like everyone wants. Do you know how fucking bored your kids are sitting there watching you eat? That's like the most boring thing you put your kids through. If they want to watch Dragon Ball Power Slayers, then... let them let them watch it while you're having your fucking sausages and chips as someone who doesn't have kids do whatever it takes to shut them the fuck up please do whatever it takes there's no judgement I'm not looking over going that's poor parenting you should you know be more actively involved no no I'm like fair play just shut them up life is stressful enough yeah good you drag these little things into the world and everyone else is just trying to have their dinner fucking put them in front of a phone so they're not starting screaming and shouting and running around like anyway I swear I'm turning into my dad every single day I get older just hear my dad's voice maybe he's right about everything he is no John leave it leave it okay talking of cunts Romero yeah yeah fucking slay well I think can we make that the last C-bomb of the episode because I think we've dropped about 10 and we're only 20 minutes in oh I haven't said it once no you're a man of culture aren't you you're a man of culture and controversial politics love me love me so much you don't say cunt on the podcast he said it again said it again yeah because you've been a fucking having favourites because you're having favourites is this a problem from when you was a kid like people having favourites and you were never one of the favourites Cal is that what it's from never never lashes out this is the last C-bomb you use what do you have to I promise I promise this is the last no no no this is the last one you're allowed right so if you're offended by the C-bomb.
26:56Apologize. We apologize to you. Not everyone likes to hear it. Just mute the next 30 seconds of the podcast. One of my favorite things about cow is in any circumstance, he did it at my house when he stayed over and he does it at work. And the moment he just realizes, what do you think you are most of the time? Friendless cunt. You're a fuck. I heard him muttering to himself, you're a fucking friendless cunt. Right, that's it. Enough. Nothing to see. It's just an awful tick. It's just this awful... I was sat at my desk the other day and I was just... My mum would to myself, got no friends. You've got no friends.
27:32You've got loads of friends. I know. I don't know why I'd do it. It's just a tick. It's a tick. I don't know what it is. I think it's such a hangover from something. I don't know what it is, Cal. I don't know, man. I don't know. Your mum's got a lovely technique with her mouth. Right, now...
27:52Right, okay. Right, Romero. Yeah. Talking of lovely technique. Right, we can all agree about the antics of the Argentine players. We don't need to go into it, but there was a... There was a pre-defined problem with Romero at Tottenham way before the World Cup. and that was that, you know, he disappeared when we needed him. He was a club captain and he was away when he should have been around the dressing room. He should have been in the training centre. He should have been part of the process like Ben Davis was and De Zerbe has alluded to this. Part of the process that kept us up even if he couldn't play and he wasn't.
28:32So that became a problem and the messaging coming out of De Zerbe, it feels like there may be an issue there. I'm, and I know, I think I know you guys feel like, I think we're all at the end. We feel like we're at the end of the road with him. we understand he's a good footballer we understand all of the things that he does well and we understand the things that he doesn't do well and that's fine as well but by god it has to be the end of the road now oh yeah he just doesn't he doesn't i feel like to some degree i was gonna cry i feel like to some degree he needs to earn you need to earn your right to pull on the shirt But that's where the mentality needs to be now, John.
29:11Yeah, the thing is with Romero is it seems like recency bias because we've obviously just had this big game with them and all the fallout from that, which we won't go into. But I've sort of not warned to him from the beginning. His personality is just quite self-focused and he's very Argentina-focused. He'd always, you know, that classic thing where he'd be injured for us then make himself available for them and we'd have big games coming up and he'd go through all those, like for friendlies, got all that travel and all that stuff when he's supposed to be rehabilitated and then not be available.
29:43There's that side, which has always frustrated me. And then, like I said, it's sort of his on-pitch persona is it's just sort of about him. Like he just gets himself sent off in games because he's got, you know, too emotional over stuff and just like goes overboard and just, you know, when we need him the most, just gets himself sent off. the going home when you know we're right in the mire and we need everyone pulling together it's just it's just things like that that really frustrate me um and also you know from a sort of personal point of view like in terms of how he plays I think he's an excellent footballer but I don't think he's a very good defender and I think actually like we would be better off having a player who is basically a much better defender and slightly not as good footballer to just be consistently playing for us than the ups and downs that we get.
30:36And you just can't build, you can't build something around a player that's that up and down and just inconsistent with what, you don't know what you're going to get from him. And then the last point on him is, I don't like the way that basically it seems like the squad are sort of scared of him. Like that to me doesn't feel like Team Unity, like the way sort of ex-players talk about Roy Keane. there was like a level of respect because they feared a little bit about how he'd react to things but they also knew that he had their back and actually it sort of meant more like they wanted to impress him and they knew that he was just like this kind of fierce leader i just feel like that he's a bully and i don't like that and i don't i don't really feel that that sort of fits in with what we're trying to do moving forward so with all of that said i just feel like it's enough now and I would like to see him like go and I'm with Cal we should be getting a shitload for him because he might win two world cups and he's won a Europa League with us he's playing in the Premier League he's like you know at prime peak age we should be getting a shitload of money for him but I would take like 40 mil if it meant we could get get him out I think look it's about leverage isn't it it's like he no doubt on on paper he is a player that you should command 50 60 million if at least and if he's fully committed and under contracts as he is at spurs then but not committed but under contract um then you could be looking north of 60 that's just yeah it's i don't think we'll just fuck around my feeling is they'd rather just get business done and get it through the door.
32:17Money isn't an issue. We've got massive headroom PSR and we've got cash on the hip because the injection of cash from Enoch. Also player sales coming through the door. It's not about pissing around. Just get it done. Get it settled. If we have to take 45 million or 50 million, you know, 20 million more than you're probably worth in different circumstances, then just do it. Just get it done. It's not like we, we're not Aston Villa. or Newcastle, where you've got to drain every possible penny from a deal because it's in their best interest to do that. Right now, it's an advantage that we can sell players cheaper than we would like or what Daniel Levy had done.
32:56And the great thing about this situation is that Daniel Levy would have, we got so used to these deals just lasting, going on forever, what's going to happen because of constant negotiation, trying to win the deal, trying to just find margins, more margins. Like the Van Hecker stuff, Spurs have had their pants pulled down according to Daniel Levy via a text message to Simon Jordan. Who cares? We haven't categorically. We might have overpaid because he had a one-year left in his contract, but we've done the business we need to do because that was the best thing for the football. It just showed you everything in that moment of what Daniel Levy used to think and how we were operating and why we never went on to achieve anything and why people feel about Spurs the way they do and why they're so upset that we're now disrupting everything we were never good at doing business with our premier league clubs when daniel levy was they probably hated they all hated him because he'd been around for 20 fucking years and like you said had to win every deal and had to ring the every drop out of the tea towel um and it was just like like even like bereval it's like okay we've done you know it sounds like we've done a deal it's done kind of thing brennan johnson like how quickly was that done like quick we got really good price for him that was the key indicator of change.

34:14Yeah. Brendan Johnson, 35 million. And I love him. I love him. And I hope he does well. I hate guts. I hate his fucking guts. It's club legend. If you're right, he is. I mean, that's a standard way around. I'm sorry, he is. He is a club legend. Don't give me a lie. He absolutely is. Did he go in? I'm not still sure he even went in. I will go to my grave believing he got a toe to it on the line. That's what I like to believe. I've seen that goal a thousand times. I like to believe that's what happened. But yeah, we've done like really well with the business we've done in terms of selling players.
34:44It's important, you know, if we want to buy Premier League players, buy from Premier League teams, we've got to sell to Premier League teams at times as much as it hurts. And especially now with the global kind of financial climate amongst football clubs, there is no money abroad. Like, there's no money. Like, fucking Serie A is a fucking... They've got no money now. This is the worry. If it isn't Inter Milan, it should be Atletico, right? Even a loan of an obligation. I even kind of want to see him play for Atletico if they draw Arsenal. Like he is, I mean, it's because Simeone has created a mini Argentina in terms of their philosophy and the way they think.
35:25Remember Godin? Like the players they had, they're just a nightmare to play against. I know things have shifted in recent terms and they've been a little bit more technical. That's why they got batted up at YR Lane. Relegation threat in Tottenham Hotspur. See what happened. yeah I just I think that would be best thing but Inter Milan I just feel like we're never going to get the money are there no are there no sort of clubs that we can go you know like Romero plus a player plus cash because they don't have money but some of these clubs I'm not saying Inter specifically but like like and they'll never do it in a million years because why would they but like Alvarez is at Atletico.
36:06Just go, right, we'll have Alvarez and you can have Romero and we'll give you some money. How about that? There's deals, isn't there? There's deals we make because you're right, they don't have money but there's some good players dotted around Europe that you go, we'll give you... If it's a player like Alvarez, you're going to have to give them some money because he's worth more than Romero. Do you know what I mean? How about this? Go on, talk to me. You've got Romero goes to Inter and we give them... Well, Romero goes to Inter and we get Lautaro Martinez. Straight swap. Well, I think they're of similar value.
36:43Yeah, I agree. Similar age, I'd do that. He's another nine. I hate him, but... I know, I know. No, no, not because of the goal the other day. I just don't think he's very good. Oh, right, okay. But he is better than what we've got. so that that would definitely that's what I'm saying that's what I'm saying we've got to be a bit smart if you go out and no one's like well we can't you know if you want 50, 60 million we can't do it we can give you 30 you go okay we'll take 30 we want X player and that's the sort of stuff maybe we can go and raid like who are the number nines in apart from Vlávic who's free and Cal honestly I know we've said this before but in the interest of the podcast you especially will hate him do you know what it's like by the end yeah it's like Johnny Smasher at Real Betis I'd never seen him play ever Johnny never will Cardoso yeah I've never seen him play never want him I just like the idea of him I just like the idea someone just kicked someone up in the air I was like yeah I want that guy I'd never seen him play never will don't want to so the couple of issues like great don't want to do you want to sign them I was like Blavich I couldn't tell you anything about him I want him free yeah okay I mean, there would have been a time definitely I'd be with you.
38:00It's just not now. I mean, he's got the touch of a… Yeah, it's worse than a Charleston. He's got a bad touch. Yeah. Bad. It bounces off him, can't hold the ball up. But what he can do, the boy can finish. I'll give you that. But I can't even deserve even wanting to look at it. And what, 300 grand a week? Yes, mental money. Donkey. Yeah. Okay. So, we all agree Romero should be out. Yeah. just how we negotiate that stuff. Yeah, get a deal. Find a little deal. Do a little deal somewhere in Europe. You go into Milan, you go to anywhere in Serie A and we've got cash and we can offer large lumps up front.
38:37Yeah. There must be players in fucking... It's become a dog meat league, isn't it? That's the problem. Yeah. Dog meat league, dog league teams are dog meat fans. But that's why I thought it was weird. You know, everyone was talking about like Raphael Leal and everyone was like, oh, I'm not sure about him because he's only good for 20 minutes. Buy him for 20 minutes then. just bring him on for 20 minutes we can do that now just stay and got any money just offer him 20 quid we've got that luxury yeah we'll pay your Costco fee for the year give us Rafa Liao and it'll just be an impact sub for us but this is the sort of stuff I'm talking about right that's what like big clubs who are serious about winning the league sometimes they just go let's just get him because he's available and he's like he's a decent player yeah he won't start but there'll be like three or four games they just come on and score the winner and it makes a difference like I'm not saying specifically Rafa Liao but if we get to the end of this window and on the right hand side we've only got Fit Kudus and Rafael is just playing for AC Milan that is so annoying to me I'm like just go and get players like that you can play Savinho on the right and Rafael can be you know your rotation option on the left like yeah I just think there's deals to be done we've got money and no one else in Europe's got any and we've got like players of value so yeah I think I think there's still a lot of business that can be done if we're smart about it and do really well at this how do you feel I mean I'm not asking you to answer this question but Marcus Turam Juve he's 9 isn't he 29 what do you mean he's 9 he's a 9 he's a right right right he's like 9 years old yeah yeah he's a number 9 yeah yeah he plays for the middle yeah he plays for Inter he does he play for I made a mistake Juve it's not Juve is he no Inter Milan Inter Milan my bad my bad man I don't know if he's prolific enough does he have the profile I don't know this is the problem the nine market is absolutely like dead you only have to look at like you know recently they were talking after the World Cup about Kane and they were like oh we need to move on from Kane and there was that list of basically strikers that will be under 30 who have had like some Premier League caps and it was basically like Dane Scarlett and Eddie and Kettier I'm like remember when England had like Les Ferdinand Teddy Sheridan Alan Shearer Robbie Fowler Stan Collymore like shit loads Andy Cole Les Ferdinand there were loads loads and loads and loads and there'd always be loads of new players coming through Michael Owen etc Rooney's like in every country I had a catalogue like that like Italy had loads of nine Spain had loads where are they all they have literally been like erased from football it's really weird because it's not like I know that now like the game's moved where it's like there are a few teams that play with like a false nine but most teams at least play with one striker so it's not like the position's gone.
41:27It's just instead of two up front, you play one up front. So why aren't there any? It's really weird, isn't it? It is really weird. I don't know where the fuck they've gone. Someone find them. Yeah, bring them back. We'll just dribble our tens now, aren't they? Just dribbly tens. Grow up, innit? Grow up, grow up. Smash it in top bins. I've got a couple of questions for you boys. Okay. We don't have to debate these for any great length, but obviously we're going into next season. We've spent a lot. there's been a lot of change a lot of transitional situations going on at Tottenham and other football clubs but we're looking at kind of what our metrics should be next year what are we aiming for what are performance indicators that we're doing we're moving in the right the right direction so how many points should Spurs take from the opening five next year and the five fixtures are Brentford away Newcastle at home Forest away Spurs Everton at home and Villa at home
42:2913 points what you'd only be happy would you be happy with 10 I'd be happy with 10 yeah but I I think out of those games I think we'll we'll win whatever I said four and draw one I mean if we get 13 points in the first fucking five games it'd be I genuinely think I'd put my house on winning league yeah like if there's any degenerate gamblers out there then And now's the time to gamble everything you have on Tottenham winning league. Yeah. I know this doesn't mean much because it's me, right? Because I basically start every season thinking we're going to win the league, like including the season when we finished 17th.
43:05I was like, we'll probably win it next year. So this doesn't mean much. But I just do feel like the positivity and the deserving factor and this idea, like it didn't occur to me. I was like, we should just try and finish top six. Like if you manage to get in the top, that's amazing. But the fact that the deserving is like, there's a gap here. There's an opportunity. like if we if we do something now there's like the cycles are lining up where there's a window suddenly got me like he's right like yes there is and he's never had this budget he's never had this quality of player before or control so it's like that is really exciting and it is a sort of story that happens in football this amazing weird things happen I just I just think something's happening oh yeah okay Cal does no European football make a top eight to finish the bare minimum we should expect that'd be a fucking disgrace if we finished eight if I if they still had I still have a membership card in my wallet I'd throw it on a pitch if we finished eight what's acceptable for you then what your Costco membership yeah no I need that I fucking need that mate he has that lemonade and wears it around his neck oh no oh morning Terry beep he's got his thing tattooed on his arms he just beeps himself in like a little warning Terry how's the hot dog's ready yet lovely I fancy I fancy the slice of pizza today you know um nah I nah that's unacceptable what's been it what is what is acceptable to you Champions League football I want I you can't go into this season regardless of what happens and the bare minimum you expect is Champions League football do you know what I really want genuinely do you know what I really want I want to go deep in the FA Cup okay so here's a question another question yeah is should we prioritise a league or do we attack all three competitions I think if we talk about what we've been talking about today which is about having a depth of the squad good squad having a good squad good that makes me think a kickboxer the way you say that it's doing a horror impression yeah it's if we got you know depth in the squad fucking go for the FA Cup man go for the FA Cup like maybe not all three cups maybe bin the league cup off but the league and the FA Cup for me come on
45:23I think go for the league. Just go for the league. I think he's right. I think he sees it for what it is. There's a gap. And with no Europe, because that is making more and more of a difference now than it ever has before. And I think if we're basically, I don't know, like January, February, and we're like top by a point, and then there's a big FA Cup game at the weekend, nobody's saying prioritise that. they're not so I think realistically obviously fast forward to next year let's say we finished in the top four I'll be like let's just try and win a trophy you know because you you know you've got a bigger squad and all the rest of it I think this season it's just like just try and finish as high as you can because that gives you a good platform for everything else and it's annoying because most seasons I'll always say let's just try and win a cup like that should be like base level try and win a cup but let's see how we're doing in the league first I actually think it's the opposite i think if we're just like middling mid table then yeah prioritize the fa cup go for it but for now let's just what's the minimum you're expecting top eight i think with the signings that we've made cal's absolutely furious at me but yeah i think like look all jokes aside if we if we finished eighth i'd be really disappointed but we have come off the back of two 17th place finishes and you know that that is progress it might not be the progress we want to see, but that does give you a bit more of a platform to go, okay, like we've made a drastic improvement from where we are.
46:50This is, this is working. It's just not consistent enough. And you've got somewhere to go from there, but I actually think we'll finish like pretty close to the top four if we don't win it. 49:32You know, what a pile of meat. Just a pile of meat on this.
49:38Move on. Move on. All right. Okay. And finally, to finish here, boys, I've got a lightning round. Oh, okay. So what I want from you is a quick answer to both. And if there is anything controversial, we can, we can quickly debate it. But here we go. Ready? Yeah. Just shout your answers out. Best signing so far. Tonali yeah Tonali yeah okay one more position Spurs must address if nowhere else right wing right wing not so you think so it's right wing is the problem is it because if Kudus breaks down if Kudus Kulishevski isn't good enough we're exposed there yeah and we were the back end the last season the back end of last season Kudus got the injury and I don't think he's ready I don't think he's anywhere near ready yeah he's paid for seven months or something mental like that it's crazy I'll say left wing because we don't even have a Kudus equivalent on the left wing we literally don't have someone as good as Kudus in the squad so I think left wing so alright keep or sell Romero sell next captain of Tottenham Hotspur Madison yeah okay not Pedro Porro he's currently the second best rated player in the world at the World Cup only Messi's rated ahead of him in terms of average rating across the entire time yeah I would not be against Pedro Porro it is Madison it is Madison And the reason why is just the way he's held himself, how invested he is.
51:04He's everything that Romero isn't. He will lead. He will allow others to have a voice. It just feels like he's the right guy. He loves the fucking club. Can I just name drop something here? Is that all right? Apologies, because I know it is irritating. But there's a guy called Josh Denzel. Do you know who he is? Yeah, he was on Love Island, but he's done a lot of presenting in football and stuff. unfortunately he's a gooner but anyway um when i was on the overlap with and he was presenting he came over to me before madison signed and said it might have been madison had signed and he said he has been obsessing over signing of spurs for ages and i was like like why like at the time stadium was right but you know i mean he was coming from where the fuck did he sign from Leicester.
51:55He's coming from Leicester, but he's won FA Cups and it felt like he was destined to a club that was probably more guaranteeing success, but he was just infatuated with the idea of coming to Spurs. And I messaged Josh the other day on Instagram and trying to get an interview with Madison, which is obviously going to be really, really difficult, but I'd love to. And he was just saying he just loves being at Spurs. He loves it, which is such a rare thing. you don't players don't love football clubs anymore that's what I was reminded by someone that Fuscovic doesn't care about Spurs we signed him when he was 16 he hadn't played a minute for us apart from pre-season football he doesn't care none of them care no none of them care but we find one that does care and I'd say Kevin Danso cares yeah love Kevin Danso so it's important to have those people in the dressing room and moreover if not only can Madison you know be influential in the dressing room but lead by example which is really important for captains as well.
52:56Often the most, the key defining aspect of a captain in most teams is like why is Mbappe captain? He's not putting his arm around the shoulders of the players he's playing with. He leads by example. Anyway, so yeah, I think fucking Madison should be our captain. Yeah, make Poro vice-captain and then you've got, you know, nice little leadership group there. He's been so good, hasn't he, Poro? So good. So good. Yeah. And that goal, that second goal for Spain the other day that was all him that was he was immense that game remember when people were like oh but he's a wing back he can't play full back it's impossible he can't do it just train him mate just coach him just coach him it's quite easy certain people didn't want us to activate his his bye clause when we forgot him initially I wanted him dead at times I've got to be honest yeah what because he lost the ball so much against Anworth 47 times that is remarkable to be honest I don't even know if the stat's real it's just in my head and so it is fact now.
53:52Well, Messi lost it 15 times in half against England, so it could be possible. Can I just ask what we're going to do about Spence? Because we now suddenly have one of the hottest properties in full-back positions, but it doesn't... Right now, I think most people think that our starting full-backs are probably Adoghi and Porro. And we've signed Robertson as cover for Adoghi with the idea that Spence would be back up to Porro. But now suddenly, if I'm Spence, I'm like, well, I should be starting left back. 100%. I think Roberson is our starting left back. I don't think he's a doggy. If you said to me, you can have a doggy for a season or Spence for a season, it's Spence, easily.
54:35Okay, so on that, based on, you know, we've listed a lot of players that we think we should be sold. I think we should be looking to sell a doggy, personally. Who's going to buy him? He's like Marshmallow. yeah but he's a he's another one that's prime for Serie A though isn't he being Italian you go back to them and you go like oh do you want this he's Italian like you do you want him yeah do you want this player that can only play eight games without getting a fucking hamstring injury yeah we can't we'll never sell him no one will ever buy him no one won him no in that case we need to deprioritise him then don't we and we do need to give Spence I think that's fair fair to do that fair to do that and look if you've got I think Spence is definitely our backup left back I think our dog is third I think I might be wrong I think given the performances of the World Cup Spence's value has probably increased by 30 % yeah so if there is if there is an option to self if someone comes in if Everton come in and say we want we'll give you 50 million pounds for Jed Spence you have to look at
55:37I'd be I'd I want him to start for Spurs I think I don't want him to go anywhere I don't want he's not a right back he is he can play right back obviously he's a left back I know you feel right footed but he is a left back it's his best position he's been playing left back for two years he's barely played right back for Tottenham at all and when he does he looks against Argentina he did it twice against Norway when he skid an Oscar Bob fouled in my opinion yeah I'm like that this is fucking they can't deal with his geezer he just bought into it and the tackle on Simeone the noise I made I roared louder than when we scored yeah mate yeah Yeah, a tricky one.
56:16It feels tough to even consider leaving a player who's in this much form. I think, again, going back to the cutthroat nature of what we're trying to do is we can't get carried away with form players that we like. Are they good enough? Are they consistently good enough? Do they fit the system? If they don't, then it's fine to let them go. Yeah, I think that's where I'm at, right? My initial instinct is just don't sell him at any cost. He's really good. I love him. anyone who's been for a long time for a long time right so obviously this isn't like a I don't like him bias thing I love him but I do I do really start to understand the like he's sort of like a round peg for a square hole type scenario where he doesn't really fit in either of those two things and actually having like two left footed left backs and two right footed right backs would make a lot more sense than having like Jed Gawad when he can play on both sides it's like yeah fine but then he can't really start We have the sort of problem that we've had before where, you know, because he's not left footed on the left hand side, that that limits us in the way that we can play out from that side and all of the problems that we've seen.
57:22Now, you get all the upside as well. But if you get a big offer for him, I think this is what clubs have done better than us in the past is they understand that, yes, this is a really great player. But actually, right now, this doesn't suit what we're trying to do. And so it's better to take that cash. let's say we got a stupid offer someone went right we'll give you 60 million for him you take it you buy another really solid just right footed right back for 30 and you've got that 30 in the bank that you can use and put that towards you know Kruppi or whoever so I do think that like there has to be a number that if it hits that number and the club obviously know what that is where they can reinvest that and also still buy a right back to cover for Poro then I think we have to explore the deal and if no one meets the number and we get to keep him then I'm happy that way as well so I think it's really interesting.
58:11I think it'll be a really interesting story over the summer because if you're him and you're also looking at it going, well, I'm not guaranteed to start. As good as I've been, I'm not guaranteed to start for Spurs. No, he needs to take advantage of this upward momentum that he's on. His journey is incredible. It really is. He's gone from not being fancied at Tottenham, like being signed, a manager that doesn't want him, it's a club signing, really alienating. inspiring stuff from Conte. For him to rebound, the mentality of the kid, the family around him, which is clearly quality. He's got an amazing network around him.
58:51For him to then go on loan to Wren. He went to Genoa, didn't he, as well? For him to rebound and fight his way back into a Tottenham team in a post-Akoglu side, which had massive issues defensively, who really didn't seem fancied by Poster Coglu as well because he was sent out on loan first window I think under Poster Coglu for them to become a not only good enough to play for Tottenham to become a really important part of the cog in the machine then for him to be called up to England and then star a World Cup like of all the players that you look at everybody in that World Cup squad you've got Bellingham obviously starred Anderson I thought had understatedly brilliant well very good World Cup Spence was the other guy behind Bellingham Spence was the guy a wonderful thing an amazing thing and he cannot be on the bench he's got to be he's got to be playing somewhere I think it might be one of them sorry John I think it might be one of them decisions in terms of selling him not something you can perhaps leave until January just because he's gone so deep in the World Cup and Polro actually I think we probably should not buy a right back weirdly enough because because he can't play until September we've got to buy a fucking right back as well Is that your solution to everything?
1:00:07That's what we do now. This is the club we are now. Well, no, because like you've just said, Spence is a left-back. And I agree with you. He is a left-back. That's what he is. He's been playing that way for two years. So Porro is our only right-back. So we should buy a right-back, shouldn't we? John, do you think training him to just be the right-back he could be? Yeah, I think basically, Cal's right. He's had basically three years of playing left-back. So he's become really good at playing left-back. there will be a transition period to convert him back to a right back, but he was excellent there before.
1:00:41The reason we signed him is because he was marauding forward on the right-hand side. So he does have that in him. So I do think that probably if you're looking at it, he should probably be starting for us at the start of the season and give Poro a bit more rest and recovery because I don't think Spence has probably had the minutes in his legs over the previous season, bearing in mind that Poro did start a shitload of games in the league and Spence didn't play every game for England, right? He was sort of coming on in some of the games. So he'll be slightly fresher. So Cal's right. Maybe we don't have to make this decision.
1:01:12He'll be playing a lot of games at the start of the season. We get to January and if Poro's back and he's benched, then we can make a decision on it. But I do think now that when Spence came in for England, there were a few moments, and rightly so, people were a little bit critical of him. But there was sort of a point where I think he, and you saw it in the Argentina game for sure, where he was like, oh no, I am very comfortable at this level. This is fine. Like, this is fine. In fact, I can go past people and I can win tackles. And you could kind of see the confidence grow in him. It would be a real shame now while he's just got all of that behind him to go, oh yeah, let's cash it in and give that to someone else.
1:01:50Because I think, you know, if you can embrace that, you've got the fastest player in the England squad, a player whose pace is just ridiculous, who now knows they're at the level to compete with world-class players. that's like the arc that we all want to see and just to kind of pie him off before you get to that moment is a shame. Alternative idea, as you've quite rightly said, Flav, what was the thing that he was doing best aside from that last-ditch tackle? Go and bash people on the left-hand side high up the pitch. Maybe just play him left wing. Maybe just play him left wing. See what happens.
1:02:19I think he can do it. See what happens. Yeah, see what happens. Who knows? Who knows? Let's see. I think, Cal, you make a good point, though, is that if he isn't the backup right back, which he probably is, despite us saying that, saying that he is a left back in the last few years is if he isn't comfortable doing that, then that suddenly becomes a problem. He's got Archie Gray who can fill in but isn't the same. What happens to Archie Gray, boys? I think he is going to be our backup right back. I think you look at the Brentford game, because Porro and Spence have gone so deep in the World Cup they have to have three weeks off which means by the time we play Brentford they will be week one in their pre-season.
1:03:00They would have only been back for like a week. So I think Gray is going to be our backup, which I don't want him to be at all. Who else? But yeah, I think he's going to end up playing right back for us the first few games. Okay. I think Gray is basically rotation for Tonali, right? Because it's like Benton, Kurt and Fernandes are your two sixes. Tonali and Gray are your two eights. And then Gallagher is basically like a running 10, like a loose chicken going mental up top. and Madison's your ball player until we get another 10 or Xavi comes back. I don't mind that. I think you're actually going to see the midfield moving in and out.
1:03:37I don't think they will be defined as like 8s and 6s and 10s and I think Bentoncourt is going to have a bigger role to play than people think. And this is my final question. One unpopular Spurs opinion for the new season. I don't know if you have any of them, boys, but mine is that mine is that of all the players, if you discount centre-backs and goalkeepers because they always play the most minutes, Scalic will play more minutes than anybody else in the midfield going forward. That's my unpopular opinion. My unpopular opinion is that Tell will score the most goals of our entire attacking line.
1:04:16Okay. Fuck, okay. Chell, what's your opinion? All my opinions are unpopular, so I don't really feel like I need to add one, to be honest. Just say an opinion then. buy more players buy them all buy them all right this has been the Fighting Cock podcast thank you very much for sticking with us Callum John Bass I love the pair of you bye bye bye Cock Cock Cock
