In short

Tottenham Q&A Thursday episode focused on Xavi Simons’ interview and whether he “believes” Spurs can win the league, plus broader Spurs optimism, pre-season talk, and squad/transfer debates.

Guests

No formal guests. The hosts are the Fighting Cock regulars: John, Rick, and Flav (with recurring banter). They reference an external interview with Xavi Simons by Mark Chapman and Gabby Logan (Sports Agents podcast).

Guest backgrounds (referenced)

Xavi Simons is a footballer; the episode discusses his injury, his preferred role as a number 10, and his past at Barcelona, plus his decision to join Tottenham. Mark Chapman and Gabby Logan are sports media interviewers.

Key claims

Spurs’ “win the league” messaging is framed as mindset/visualisation; lack of Europe is said to help league chances. Xavi Simons is portrayed as front-and-center, believing, and aiming to bring a title to Tottenham. Romero’s departure is argued as necessary due to unreliability and negative baggage.

Notable examples

MK Dons pre-season goal by Fernandes; praise for 17-year-old Williams Barnett’s positive passing and movement; debate over left-back options (Roberto/“a doggy” vs Spencer) and transfer value (e.g., Will Lankshear fee).

0:34it's the fighting cock it's the fighting

0:42it's the fighting cock a camel hey there boys Q &A Thursday it's the best the best version of you know what I wanted to qualify for Europe this year I did I always want to be in Europe because you're in Europe you're nothing yeah sort of but when we're in Europe don't really get to the Q &A Thursdays and Q &A Thursdays for me are the best version of the fighting cock so while I'm unhappy that we're not in European trophy a European competition I am happy that every Thursday for the next year we'll do this podcast rather than just simply what do you think of the game lads everyone saw it everyone thinks the same every podcast is the same thing about a game everyone yeah they're everyone so this gives us a chance to be a little bit more creative freestyle freestyle it yeah yeah and i've been i've been listening to oh and also not having europe means uh we're almost certainly going to win the league i did i did i did i've been watching javi simmons's interview with the sports agents which is a podcast by mark chapman and gabby yoref rosendale logan logan gaby logan all the same woman there's only one there's only one gabby and it's the one with all of those names it's just one person we celebrate all of them yeah right uh um and they interviewed javi simmons and i thought what a quality interview like you know i i'm the more you hear from him the more impressed you're you i am by him you know the stuff he did with his nan was a lovely thing because he's, you know, he's then got dementia and dementia is a thing that's sort of quite close to my heart.

2:24I'm not into it. It's not like I'm well into dementia. I just have a lot of family that have had dementia and seen it past and it's quite a tricky thing. So, yeah, I think you'd be an odd person if you were into dementia in that way. I wonder if there's a porn genre. Can't be. That'd be too, that'd be, that's beyond the power, isn't it? Yeah, I'm not going to search for it to find out, to be honest. I mean, if you had NordVPN, no one would know if you did. That's a good point. This episode isn't sponsored by NordVPN, by the way. So don't worry about that. That isn't the read. You're going to get another one of them later, right?

2:59You'll be happy tonight. No, but the Xavi Simmonds interview was just brilliant. It was for someone who's injured, who could be frustrated, could not want to be involved, who could use his time to not be engaged in the football club. like you know a certain Romero might might have chosen to be he's like front and center he's talking about he's did you see the interview you know what I'm even talking about no no well he talks about um why he chose to join Tottenham which is his first mistake because uh it was the head coach that convinced him ah you must gullible gullible young man is what I would say there uh he said van der Ven uh basically convinced him to say convinced him to come and said, we need you, so you come here, is what Van der Ven said to him.

3:47Good, good. Yep. He said his preferred position is a number 10, although he's happy to play wherever the coach wants him to play. Okay. Talks about his time at Barcelona.

4:03I guess the takeaway quote of the entire episode was, I want to show I can bring a title to Tottenham. everyone's talking about titles at the club. Yes. It feels like there's a message, isn't it? That's coming from someone. Yeah. It might be a mad little Italian geezer. Spiky air. But everyone's talking about, yeah, titles. We're going to win the league this year. This is what we're doing. I just think there's a lot of good stuff coming out, Rick. Yeah. I mean, like, I think there must be some kind of, not like a memo that's gone around to everyone, like an email. slash everyone's on slash was it slash slack slack slack just open it up and he says win the league yeah oh shit every morning in slack it just it's Zerby with a thumbs up picture going league this year boys but isn't that that's manifestation right that's everyone thinking about the same thing yeah getting everyone on board I think I think Ange was a proponent for that kind of visualisation and I think he told people that, you know, it's the same, you know, I always win a trophy in my second season and it's just putting it out there.

5:19When people come to Tottenham or wherever it be, players or anything like that, we are apprehensive saying stuff out loud because we'll get laughed out the building. We're going to win the league. We're going to win the FA Cup. Mate, old dusty trophy cabinet and all this shit. And it's like, is it worth piling the pressure on you to be able to say stuff like that for it to come around and more than often than not to bite you in the ass? So to come out and what it feels like within the club is like, obviously no Europe. We're making these signings. Roberto is fucking dialed in already and he's saying everything we want to hear.

6:06maybe this is you know let's what was stopping us we're stopping us he's probably in there saying chelsea new manager transition carrick you know probably gone by christmas if we're honest liverpool new manager transition city new manager transition we're kind of all new manager.count as transition well he does but it's that time to say if we are if we get out the gates quick enough show consistency and that mental fortitude to be like right we are top of the league or we are third to keep on hanging in there that we this is our prime objective is to win the title and keep saying it we're equal to the others at the moment that's what you know you could be saying to the team and that they would be believe in it i believe it i think we you know the only team there the gunners that have the same manager and have had a consistent kind of team that would be you'd expect them to start the the season very quickly how they kind of finished it they're going to be you know champions but they've got injuries saliba apparently won't be back until 2027 saka and rice are going to be rested because of the World Cup.

7:33Sorry, in my head, that was two years, not one. He'll actually be back early 2007. I thought you said he's out for like 18, 20 months. He's so happy. Then he realised, fuck, it's just the five months. But still, I mean, opportunity, when it knocks. The thing is, Ricky, is it isn't, it doesn't, like if we go, if we win the league, saying we're going to win the league, that would be magnificent. If we don't win the league, it doesn't matter because it's about changing the mindset. I think us as fans, because of years of just underperforming and not being able to compete and being laughed at and spending money but nowhere near what other people spend and the wage structure sort of holding us back and that sort of stuff, it meant that as Spurs fans, we developed an attitude of, of course, we're not going to do it.

8:18Deep down, we were for, league talk is insane. And I think I'm still there. When De Zerbe says, yeah, we're going to go for the league. Not that you said that, but that's what we're hearing. And what Shavey Simmons says, yeah we want to win the league in my head i'm like intellectually i don't believe what they're saying i'm glad they're saying it i just don't believe them or i don't think that they think or they don't understand the club they've joined because the club they've joined is full of people that don't think we can win the league and it takes someone to change that mentality altogether like genuinely john if i say to you we will win the league next year it's just me saying stuff you don't actually believe it do you well i want to believe it so that that's a step in the right direction yeah and look you got to start you have to start somewhere and you know if we look at those scumbags down the road they built that like empty case for a trophy right which they were rightly laughed at and mocked for and everyone was like why have you built that but in a way i kind of understand now why they did it right because it's basically like setting your ambitions to go like Like that is what we're going to do.

9:26That is our mission. That's what we're going to strive to do. And it's the same thing in like businesses always do it, like having a mission statement and like how we're going to achieve our dreams. And everyone buys into this idea of what you're going to try to do so that everyone knows what the overall objective is. The overall objective of a football club can't be like, well, we want record breaking revenues and we want to build a new hotel, right? Like that's not going to motivate you as a playing staff. And, you know, even to a certain extent going, well, we want to qualify for like top four.

9:54It's like, cool, if that's the highest you're aiming, then you might finish lower than that. Whereas, you know, if you really go in, we want to try and win the league, that's going to be our actual ambition. And everyone in the club's like, that's goal number one. Like, we're going to try and win the league. If you finish second, right, that's like a massive improvement from where we've been previously. So it's less about like going, that's what you said we're going to do, therefore anything less than that is a failure. And it's more about setting the agenda of what the club is aiming for and like creating this idea of what success should be and i do feel like where this is different from the levy era is it feels like even the members of the lewis family are kind of brought into supporting that idea and that we've brought this guy in he seems to believe that's possible if we just give him what he needs like who knows and i agree with rick i like if you actually look around at the league there's a it might not be true it might not come to pass but you can absolutely make a case to go anyone can win the league this season anyone so yes whilst we might technically also be a club in transition if we can get our shit together before everyone else we have as good a chance as they do at having a proper go at it so I'm always on this fence of like I'd rather be a dream and think we might win the league so yeah I think we are going to win the league, Flav.

11:14How about that? Yeah, I'll take it. I just don't believe you. Right. Good. That's the problem. I need to be changed. I need something to happen to make me believe. I want to. I want to, absolutely. Well, Flav, as a wise man once said, just you wait. Just you wait. Well, I will, hopefully. Fingers crossed. Fingers crossed. Ricky, when did you finish? You said eighth, didn't you? No, I didn't say eighth. Yeah, I think you said that. No, top six has to be. Rick, when you found your mum's dildo for the first time why did you keep hold of it for a bit that's that's a couple of weeks i can't believe that i did i made a fantastic dildo joke and we had to cut that pod a twat yeah we went down an alleyway that which wasn't it wasn't publishable i don't think yeah but i want to know what happens to us but when we got down that alleyway it was dark and We were like, we've got to go back.

12:13I was like, oh God, we did four minutes. I was like, this can't go out onto the internet. I don't understand why you kept hold of it for a bit. What was it like, a memento? What the fuck did you want? I can't think of anything funny to come back to that. There's not anything really to say about that. You just wanted to measure it to see if it would fit him as well. Yeah. we played a we played a first pre-season game MK Dons behind closed doors at the training ground and obviously it's just it's just a pre-season doesn't mean anything but blimey what a goal from Fernandes what a peach did you see Gabby and Bongloog having a go at Spurs fans are getting excited saying yeah we should score those goals in training all the time mate we are there's a B under our we've put a lot of B's under a lot of bonnets this summer.

13:08Yeah, good. Isn't it? Yeah. He's got the arm with Spurs. I just want to know what, I mean, I do know why because he's 17th and all that stuff, but he just doesn't like what we've been able to do. He doesn't realise the size of the football club compared to his. But anyway, what a peach of a goal. It was amazing. Yeah, it was, I think even Fernandes said in his post-match interview, it's the best goal he scored. He ever scored? Yeah, that, even though it was kind of like a pre-season friendly, he said that he, like, hands down that's the best goal he's scored. How many times do you reckon out of a hundred?

13:44Like, I think you could roll that ball up and it's never going to hit that, but it's never going to hit the post and go in exactly like that. To be super critical, I think in training, players are probably much more comfortable with doing that than it's different. If you want to give a bongle ball any credit at all, to do it in a match, setting with 60 ,000 people watching is different from doing it like that. But yeah, it was an absolute peach. Yes, yes. I mean, to even attempt it, I think there was, I don't know if any of you have seen, there was a, I don't know if the keeper was off his line, but Gallagher tried to do something like that.

14:28Tried to lock the keeper. I think it went fucking, the ball went to the Emirates. It was fucking so high and far out. Someone on Reddit called it, he buried it in the bush. That's what I saw someone said. Because there's a big bush behind the goal. Just disappeared into that bush. And obviously, it's been clipped up. We've all been excited about him for a long, long time. He's already made his debut for Spurs, but Williams Barnett. I did an episode of The Lab with Lady White Rose. And he was talking about this kid is mustard. and uh i know i know it's pre-season i know it's not at the level but you can see that there's a player in him john like it's he people you you mentioned about finding a 10 ricky in case madison gets injured and javi simmons comes back yeah you might have you might mention it as well john but maybe trust him maybe john yeah so first of all i just want to let people into like behind the curtain which is like me and rick basically when everyone was talking about lwb lwb this lwb is mustard i was just like who is this left wing back that everyone i had no idea what you were talking about yeah it really confused i was like why can no one remember his name this left i just i just assumed it as soza i was like oh he's had a good game has he left wing back yeah and and this was in like multiple other people in other chats and i was like who is this left wing back for the love of god and then i realized it's really inspired um i mean this kid is like he is ridiculous like he is a serious talent it will just be really interesting to see what happens given that you know if you look at the youth players and the you know we've spoken about it there's a lot of them leaving the club because they're not going to get the sufficient game time he's an interesting case where he's like almost too young where he hasn't got a sell-on value just yet because he hasn't been out on loan he hasn't done much there and he's maybe a little bit too young to sell and like there's definitely more value and they definitely want to see more from him before they decide what to do with him and he's also clearly like really talented so in a weird way he might have more of a chance of hanging around and being that like you said being that sort of short-term cover for xavi because though you know it just doesn't quite make sense to move him on at this stage because if you think about like a player like divine or or Donnelly, for example, they play in that 10 position or they can play there.

16:48And you'd think, well, if you need a third choice, you'd go to them. But we're like moving or looking to move on those players. And so maybe there is this opportunity for him to break in there. And yeah, I know some people that know him. And he is like, his family are Spurs. He's a Spurs fan, like fully. And there is a expectation around the club with him that they really want to try and create a pathway for him. They really do think he's like really talented. So it will be really exciting to see what happens with him because like a silky, classy, skillful number 10. That's exactly the sort of player you want to break through into your first team.

17:26It looks like he plays football for the fun of it. He floats around the skill. He obviously believes in himself. He looks like he's bulked up as well. I know it's only been six, seven months since we last saw him play. It looks like he's transformed a little bit. He's becoming a man. At 17, you're not fully grown. in fact you're not grown at all i know that's that's when you're athletes like these guys that you can go and train and you know develop muscle but there's like a natural strength that you're grown like you could probably like there could be a 17 year old kid who lifts as much weights as he can and ricky could kill him because he's got his man's shrimp yeah it's true yeah yeah yeah so when he gets that you'll see a different player altogether like he's um i just think there's something there and you look at clips of mikey moore and you know he's a few years older than him now and you look at clips of sort of donnelly and what they did at that level but there's something different about williams barnett what i what i liked about him when when he had the ball that his passing was so positive you can be a youngster you could be getting your kind of like You know that the games on Spurs play, you've got Fernandes, you've got Tonali, you've got a lot of eyes on it, and you can play the ball safe.

18:47You can do, just don't lose the ball. But he was playing through balls. He was being positive and aggressive in his passing. And what I loved about him was his movement. And what I mean by that is when the ball was coming across him, he was using the pace of the ball to move his body, like to roll the opponent and he'd done it quite a few times and it just i can't remember like what players remind me of but it was like do you know when you front up to a player and you take them on by doing a skill step a of dropping the shoulder but how he was moving the balls when it was coming towards him he was letting the ball move and then he was moving and it was just that kind of type of um confidence for such a young kid to be doing in a game i was like i'm having this we're fucking having it

19:39I don't know if I spoke to you boys maybe Ricky we spoke on this is Tottenham podcast we do behind our Patreon payroll patreon.com and we talked about Romero it looks like he's done Vicario also has not been taken on the tour so it looks like he's on his way out so I guess John what's your opinions on Romero according to Fabizio Romano that he will definitely leave Spurs. There's no way back. Both the club and the player have all agreed that it's time for him to move on. I know, did we talk about it, John? A bit, yeah. On a podcast? Yeah, I think so. Last week, wasn't it? Yeah. But at that time...

20:21You have to do everything you can to not... Yeah, yeah. Oh, shit, I'm giving you another opportunity. Yeah. At that time, it was basically unclear. There were no links to him leaving. And so it was more of a case of like, we need to move him on but you know what's going to happen whereas now gladly there are a few more like concrete links i was actually listening to to you boys talk about it and it is an interesting thing in terms of his like the price and i actually think there's a really interesting element which is like that the money we're hearing is like what 45 million euros which is basically like 40 million quid which is which is really low but i think that's like emblematic of of the problem that that we have with him, which is that people know he's a good player, but the reason that his value is low is because there's this ton of negative stuff that comes with having him.

21:08And now we're paying, essentially, we're paying the price for that because plenty of clubs will take him, but they are going to factor in the issues that surround him as a... He's a not. That he's a twat and that you're going to have to deal with that and that has an effect. And so, yeah, from a footballing point of view, I'm glad that he's leaving because I think that whilst individually he's a good player, he can cause teams that he plays for like problems and the Zerbi I think is like much more of like a system type manager and so a rogue player is going to cause you quite a lot of issues and especially defensively you just want like sound reliable players that can like give you what you need consistently and that is the one thing it's like you can get world-class performances out of Romero there's no doubt about that you don't know when they're going to come and you can't rely on them and at any moment he could also just get sent off or do something mental so you factor that in and you know one of the things that rick i think you mentioned on that pod was everybody in every fan base as well as the media hates his guts now in the in england so you've it's an added thing and you already mentioned flab about like gabby agbonglahor he's not alone is he like we already know everybody hates spurs ang said it best when he's like spurt totten does crazy things to people we've already got enough going against us i think if you clear the decks get rid of him he's also one of those figures who in this sort of post poch period he's been like one of the big figures i think like we've spoken a lot about the painful rebuild i think that that period was was like this entire transition period that's now over right levy's gone poch has gone all of that generation of players have gone.

22:47And he's like one of the big figures from that middle period. And if we are going to start afresh, he's got to go. And we need to move him on and let some new leaders take the squad forward. Just quickly, I wanted to pick you up about the Williams Barnett, something you said, John. How do you know? So my friend, Nick, who I've spoken to. Nick, Nick. Yeah, Nick. Nick Shirley, one of my best friends. Yeah, yeah, who's one of your best friends. Good looking chap. Good looking guy. Really good looking. Silver fox these days, but still going for the sort of richer gear, minus the hamsters in the arse.

23:24Lock your mums up. Yeah, lock your mums up. But his mum does look a little bit like... Whoa, whoa, whoa. Yeah, go on. Who is his mum? What's her name? I'm not going to out his mum. Okay, who does she look like? She looks like Neil Warnock with massive tits. That's the magic. Neil Warnock with massive tits. Massive tits. What a description. Yeah. I imagine she has long straight hair well no she's just got short hair short hair so she looks a lot like like Neil Warnham with fucking big old titties so yeah and like one of the best mums going by the way you know what I mean like I used to go around to his house just any time of day she's like oh do you want a sandwich I'll just make you some food just like proper looks off him and his brother both completely spoiled growing up like their washing was always done like the mum would like she'd always clean their room take them and ferry them everywhere, go to football.

24:18Football will be on nonstop in the house. I don't think she ever watched a program that she wanted to watch because football was on 24th. Oh, bless her. What a woman. Just absolute goddess. And so the name's Neil as well? Yeah, her name's Neil. Neil Warnock Shirley. Neil Warnock Shirley. But yeah, so he, one of his friends is Luca Williams Barnett's dad. So it's a pretty good connection to him. Wow. Yeah. Rick you look a bit like Gabby above the horse thanks cheers for that like a slim version yeah thank you your head's like half the size of his yeah but if you thank fuck for that it's ginormous his head it's insane where did that happen where did that how did it like his body went right you've reached 45 we're just gonna make your head massive now he didn't have that when he was playing did he no no Do you remember he was really, really fast?

25:13He was absolutely rapid. I've got this theory that basically when he was growing up, he had some condition that if he wasn't moving quickly enough, that air pressure would build up and expand. And now because he stopped playing, it's just slowly inflating. So he'd be like megamind eventually, and then it would explode. That's a good theory. I believe that theory. That's what I think. That's what I'm going for. Sorry to stop the podcast, but we have to remind you that Saylee is the official sponsor of the Fighting Cock podcast. 26:35He's retired. I thought he retired like 10 years ago I had no idea he was still playing yeah I've got a quiz for you boys here we go here we go it's a Lewis Holtby quiz Jesus Christ okay tell me and you can play along at home if you get five out of five questions right DM Ricky right okay and you ask him whatever you want he replies to everybody I promise right so So how many games did Lewis Holtby play for Tottenham Hotspur? Fucking hell. I'll go 42. I'm going to go 53.

27:18John is correct with 42. What? Oh my God. What the fuck, John? I mean, that's just a lucky guess. How many goals? There might be more than five. I'm quite having fun with this. How many goals did Lewis Holtby score for Tottenham Hotspur? two go with five the answer's three John Jesus Christ what other team no name me one team that Lewis Holtby played for in England in the Premier League oh

27:58oh shit alright name me one other English team you paid for Did he go to Fulham? He did go to Fulham. 3-0, John. Hey, hang on. Hang on. You said another team. Did he play for Blackburn? Yes, he did. Rick, you can have a point as well. 3-1. Right, okay. Nice. What team did Lewis Holtby play the most games for in his career? Fucking hell. Who did we sign him from? Was it Hamburg? That's what I was thinking. Was it Hamburg? I'm going Hamburg. Hamburg is the correct answer. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Yes. Name me one other German club he paid for. Stuttgart. No. Ricky, you get shot. Fucking hell.

28:52I don't know. Cologne. Cologne. Yeah. That's how they say it, to be fair. No, Schalke and Holstein. Cologne. I remember being really excited about Lewis Hulbert. He had a good game against Norwich, if I remember rightly. He was like a cult hero back in the day. Yeah, we rated him. We rated him highly. Thought he was going to be good. Didn't happen. Didn't happen because he was very average. I saw him play in a pre-season. I went to Stagdew slash Pride in Hamburg. Can I just categorically say, Pride in Germany, certainly in Hamburg, is very different to Pride in the UK. I think pride in the UK is a celebration of homosexual love.

29:40Pride in Hamburg felt like just an opportunity for men to fuck each other. Oh. Yeah. And if you're straight, it doesn't, they don't, they didn't really mind if you're straight or not. Right. In fact, I think they preferred it if you were straight. Hang on, can I categorically say I didn't have sex with a man at pride in Hamburg? I'm just saying that they viewed me sounds like you did well someone put a put a sticker on my back which I walked around for about four hours of and it said come inside oh who did that that's out of order isn't it same way I think I stuck it on myself it was different what coincidence that you and your mum had the same sticker oh mate come on it's not even funny that's shit I really enjoyed it All right, let's do...

30:30So who won the quiz? John Bass won the quiz. Let's know what your score is. This is our home. If you need a blowjob, ask Ricky. Over his DMs. They're open for you. Always open. Always open. We've got lots of questions from beautiful people of Reddit. Whenever, on every Thursday, if we do the Q &A on Thursday, we always go to Reddit. We always ask the wonderful people to send in questions. So if you're not on Reddit or you are on Reddit and you're not on our coys, then you should be because it's an amazing little subreddit we've got over there. Schedule OK 6916 is, how did Ricky get over his spaghetti bolognese and garlic bread addiction?

31:14I didn't get over it. No, no, no. You can't get over it. No. Is it still your go-to meal? Oh, I love it. Absolutely fucking love it. You can't get wrong. It's like, I know. And everyone's going, yeah, but everyone says, yeah, of course, everyone says it everyone's correct yeah yeah it's really good my my daughter's been um making homemade dough balls brushing it with butter and garlic oh oh my god walking past just popping a couple yeah oh mate fucking all the time yeah yeah does she know that you're fasting and that well she does and she doesn't know about my addiction so i just keep it on the down low every time i like does anyone want any water when i go to the kitchen when i go in there i have a a couple of spoonfuls but for myself even though i've just had a massive dinner of it do you ever when you're eating dinner right and you're looking at the kit like you're not actively wanting to eat your kids food but you're like i wonder if they're gonna leave that and then you'll you'll you'll pretend to take no you're not pretending to take on the plates that you offer to take the plates out yeah and as soon as you get into the kitchen you have one little glance over your shoulder just to get no one's following you and then you gobble up all the foods on the plate yeah all the time that is me you know what i do because i don't have my own kids right but i've got lots of nieces and nephews and so like sometimes we'll go for like dinner with them and you know kids they always leave loads of food right yeah and it's and it's well annoying and their parents want their kids to eat more food right so i've devised this genius plan where i'm like i don't know i've got this really like good technique to like make them eat more of their food and i basically play this game where i get like a little bit of the napkin right i put it in my hand and i make them guess which hand it's in and if they get it wrong then you know they have to eat a bite and if you know if if they get it right then i'll have i'll have to have a bite of their food right well what i realized is you know the first go you make it so that they win right and then they're like they're having a bite and the parents are like oh that's such a good idea it's really getting them involved but what i do is i just make sure i keep losing then i can eat the rest of their fucking delicious burger because they're idiots they're morons they're fucking idiots and then i don't have to i don't have to like feel like guilty because i want to eat half their delicious burger that they've just left completely untouched.

33:20Yeah, in front of their parents. In front of their parents. Yeah, exactly. I can't lean over and be like, oh, just have a big bite of your kid's burger. But in this scenario, I'm a hero and I'm eating their burger. It is fucking genius. You've had three burgers that night, at least. Easily. And then I start doing it with their drinks. Like, I'm doing it with everything. Fucking honestly, kids are fucking idiots. Everyone goes, oh, my kid's so intense. No, they're all idiots. They're all idiots. They're thick. Thick, so stupid, kids, aren't they? Thick. Why can you be so fucking stupid? do you realise if I wasn't around you'd be dead that's how shit you are that's how shit you are the whole purpose of you on this planet is staying alive you'd be fucking dead if it weren't for me, idiots, you're a fucking idiot fucking idiot anyway and then they get to a certain age where they stop being idiots and then they think they know everything about everything I'm having this at the moment a little bit I'm getting advice from 16 18 year old kids that haven't been around the block before you think I ain't been around the block before?

34:17I ain't been around the block. Yeah, yeah. Do you not think I've been around the block, do you, kids? I fucking built the block. Yeah. I am the block, pal. I was helping out with a bit of English the other day. Oh, God. Yeah. And I said, oh, no, that sentence ain't right. You've got to change it. Chloe went, no, it is right. No, no, it ain't right. It's a possessive, it's a possessive. The fuck I'm wrong? Yeah, you are. I'm fucking wrong on that. Fucking hell, she did know. Anyway, other questions. You didn't get over it, did you? How often did you have sweet? Very well? Once every 14 days? What, a spag bowl?

34:56Yeah. Fucking behave once a week, mate. Once a week. Yeah. It ain't like it was last time. I'll tell you, kids at home, right? I would go around Ricky's house running his flat and it was disgusting the amount of food you could put on a normal plate. I didn't think it was possible to get that much food on the plate. And then you complained about being fat. Obviously, you're having like... each bowl of spaghetti bonnets was about 3 ,000 calories. This is the one time that Flav jokes and builds up everything that he says. Like, he just kind of embellishes everything that he says about me. He's right on this one.

35:31I can't lie. I'm not going to sit here and lie. And just to reinforce the fact that this is truth, you didn't actually have garlic bread as cutlery. You didn't actually have... No. You did have a knife and fork. Oh no, a spoon and a fork. Yeah. Yeah. It was two loaves of garlic bread around, hanging around. Oh, there always is. Always. Spudsy, Spursdy, he says, there's too much optimism on the podcast at the moment. Who will be the first, the fighting cop regular to call RDZ? It fucking does my head in this. If you're too lazy to write Deserby, then you need to look at yourself. all right just fucking write deserve because i have your you can't be asked to do the work and now i'm going i have to say rdz every single time rdz it's not even a z it's a z you cunt anyway um he'll be the first on the the fighting crop regulars to call rdz to leave and when will they do it uh m philly says cow and it'll be because we'll draw to commentary and we'll decide he hates his shit beard and dodgy haircut and someone else just said Alex yeah yeah I was gonna say we will be undefeated in 10 games yeah and Alex will come in and be like I'm not sure I'm having him I'm not sure and then we'll lose the next 10 and he goes there's something about this guy yeah yeah I know it's controversial but I think we should hang on to him now and we're all like fucking do you know do you know what you're doing I can't tell

37:09Austin416 says, did you whisper to yourself, we're so fucking back? After Fernandes struck that ball into net three minutes into a pre-season game against MK Dons, like I did. Callum went, I went with, we're winning the league. I just immediately tweeted, could we? Because you aren't. Because I was like, yeah. I was trying to get into Spurs play. refreshing doing all sorts and I was like fuck it I'm just going to go and look on Flask School like always oh we're already 1-0 up great fucking terrific what I tried to get on Spurs play I gave up it just said like there's too much there's too much traffic and I like Spurs are doing a lot well they're doing a lot well I mean I think the optimism around the football club and the mood around Spurs fans is about as positive as it has been since the first part of Posta Colt Luzera and probably beyond that midway through Pochettino's era.

38:04But to not be able to cater for the fact that people want to watch the football club play on your own player, it's terrible. It's sort of, in a weird way, sort of encouraging, right? That they're like, it's MK Don's, there'll be a little bit of a buzz and then they completely underestimated that basically everybody wanted to watch it. So in some ways, you know, I'd rather that this was a problem and they go, oh, shit, we're going to have to, we need to fix this because people are going to want to watch a lot of stuff on Spurs play. And they might fix it before preseason really starts in earnest because it can't carry on like this.

38:47It was absolutely pathetic. It was so bad. It reminded me of like when the internet first launched, it was that bad. So, yeah, hopefully they can see this as like, oh, shit, yeah, everyone wants to watch us. Let's fix this. And it does, to your point, it does sort of demonstrate how excited we are. I can't imagine wanting to watch a behind closed doors Thomas Frank team. Can you? I just don't think that they understood or didn't anticipate the buzz. Yeah, exactly. Yeah. Interesting. We've got a game on Wednesday, haven't we? Who are we playing? River Plate, isn't it? What? I don't know. Who are we playing?

39:27River Plate. Sydney FC yeah Australian team yeah they've gone they've gone they've gone they're already flying out there playing Sydney FC you see Madison took a picture of Robinson what did he say you better buck his ideas up better liven up liven up liven himself up Robbo better liven himself up he's going to be in my company for the next 26 hours and his face is really just confused it's just quality banner I love Madison I love him. I love him. I've gone from being indifferent and being annoyed by him to since his injury and watching his footage, which seems to have flown by from when he got injured this time last year to where we are now.

40:10It just seems like a, I don't know, a lifetime ago. But he is going to be the captain of the football club. And I can't think of a better candidate than him. Just talks so well. He speaks like a fan. A fan who got to play for his club. And he's from fucking Coventry. John will know there's nothing in Coventry. Nothing there. There is nothing. The two best things that come out of Coventry are your wife, John, and James Madison. Do you know in Coventry they still turn the lights off at 12 o 'clock at night to save energy? Because nothing gets produced in Coventry. They're like, the local government went, well, we can keep the lights on all night, but you lot need to start producing something.

40:56do something put Coventry on the map James Madison's done his bit John's wife done her bit all the rest of you 400 people that live in Coventry you are buck your ideas up you know it was like outside of London it was the most bombed part I was about to say that and you understand why yeah about 15 quids worth of damage it would also be it would also be good we're like no no keep going keep going carry on it'd also be good if they could eventually get round to rebuilding it yeah yeah it's not much going on there but he is a legend so i love matters and yeah i also do think and it's very like small glimpses we've seen so far but i do think all the things that they sold us on robo robertson i think we're going to get a lot more than we realized in terms of just he is a he's an excellent player still but he is going to add that like one a little bit of vibes to the team.

41:49And that sort of like mentality, yeah. And like, I do think he's also like a leader and like has got the right sort of mentality for this idea of like, we're going to win the league. I do think he's going to be a valuable asset. And I think them two, that is really funny that I can really imagine them two like forming a bit of relationship. So it's good. I mean, yeah, they're going to be part of what if there is a leadership group, them two are definitely going to be in it. Yeah. He's going to be given the number three shirt. Andy Robertson. What does that tell you? starts starts got a problem with that he's better than a doggy currently he's a better left back than a doggy currently I think that's I don't think that's I can't work I mean a doggy could be Roberto Carlos but if he if he can't put five games together then it's irrelevant what we've got actually is two two footballers at left back who are going to help each other out who don't have to play 50 games in a season or get 25 out of both of them at 25 good games yeah fresh like they'll come in it won't be like they're leggy from playing three days earlier.

42:50If there's any fixture congestion, we've got the numbers now. We really have, even if we sell a few more. So, yeah, he starts for you, Ricky. I'd probably go with a doge, if I'm honest. I just think he is that little bit younger, a bit more athletic, can get up and down the pitch. So, again, like I said on This Is Tottenham pod, it's dependent on who we're playing. Like there might be a time where if we're playing against the Gooners or Liverpool and you've got an attacker like Saka, Salah, you might want to play Spencer left back because his one-on-one defending is unbelievable. Lock those players up.

43:40If we play someone at home, Coventry might go a bit more attacking. a dogey want you to get more forward one of those lopsided numbers where you're playing free at the back dogey just straight up there so it mix and match whoever we're playing it's good it's good to have that though because at one stage it was just a dogey and then it was like who else we got i i was i was reading something i might better watch a youtube video by someone from the athletic but it made me laugh because it said they were talking about traditional fullbacks what do you from traditional fullbacks is they overlap. They give options on the wing and provide width and attacking.

44:21That's typically how we've seen them use apart from Posta Coglu. But the bloke said, Deserby doesn't really use them like that. Sometimes they overlap. Sometimes they underlap. Sometimes they hold their position. And sometimes they're like an extra midfielder. I was like, all right, right. So they just do absolutely everything. He's fullback, do they? it's quite interesting like you saying that because in the post-match interview with Mikey Moore he was saying a lot of the younger players came on and funnily enough a lot of them all played out of position and I don't know if that's intentional by Deserby as to say I know we can play but let's see what like where you don't normally play how quickly can you adjust what what are your limitations and if you're talking about a left back and oh I just play I just play full back all I do is defend okay let's put you in this position let's see how you react can you do this can you think on your feet can you cut inside whatever it might be so it might be that he is looking to say to his players I know these are the positions you play but how we play you're going to have to debutize for i don't know whoever if they roam forward you fill that space when we're under the cosh you need to step in it you know to create back for it whatever it might be so it's going to be interesting in these friendlies to see who plays and where they play and how they react um we've got a question here from dan Maniscus, he says, do the Frenchman and the tentacle have any eye decay on the state of Kulusevsky's knee?

46:04My theory is that he's probably cropped and the club are trying to PR their way to eventually slip him out the door quietly.

46:14I haven't heard anything from the tentacle, got to be honest. No, the Frenchman's knee has not said anything on Kulu. Yeah, I mean, all I've heard is that he's progressing well and another breakdown is imminent.

46:33I don't know about you, Steve, but I'm slightly surprised and a bit disappointed that Kudus isn't further along than what he is. That he's not travelled. He's not travelled and obviously didn't play. in the friendly. I thought he would have been, I thought he would have progressed further. You hoped he, you hoped he would. Yeah. Yeah. But he's been out for fucking ages. Yeah. And I thought within that time, his problem with it, what was it? His quad? Yeah. Then we rushed him back. Rushed him back. But I thought he might have been, because he's been out for so long. Yeah. I saw him in training.

47:16He looked all right. It's just one thing about going and playing seven or eight games across the world when you're recovering. Travel has a big impact on it. And through his current, I don't know if you know about this, it's not common with a quad injury, but they had to remove his leg from the hip joint, twist it around 360 degrees and put it back in. Right, okay. Took his leg off and then put it back on me. Like a GI Joe doll when you spin the leg round on those hips. Why are you looking at me confused? What? John. Because, I mean, how is that possible? Like the skin. It was a bad injury. the skin like you you physically can't do that can you they can they can do wonders this the skin when you twist the leg the skin will just be twisted around that's what the hold up is is they're trying to loosen right so what they've done is they've actually severed the leg and then spun it around and stuck it they kept the skin right they're now they're now working on the skin that's that's the hold up because as we know you know skin does take a long time to heal it's a tricky tricky thing the skin yeah okay Mattaria says if you could refund one current player for the amount we paid for him who would you pick so you just get your money back he's or her suggestion is Solanke that's 65 million I was I was thinking Solanke that's the one that popped into my head how much do we pay for a Charleston 55 probably that that'd be the one right yeah Yeah, because I think Solenki's still got some value, right, on the pitch, whereas Richarlison's just falling to bits.

48:53So if he could get that sort of money, I'd probably think it's him. Can't think of anyone else. Yeah. Richarlison's the correct answer. Yeah, got to be. And we've got a question here. Where has it gone? This guy's been downvoted, so it doesn't see. No, it hasn't. How to remove pimples from my arse cheeks. What the fuck do you think this is? Take us seriously. Welsh Baked Bean says we got£28 million for Lancashire. Oh, I see, sorry. We got£28 million for Lancashire, Devine, Tyon Thompson and Valise. Are you surprised? Genuinely seems like great transfer business. Boys, there has been sort of a conversation about whether or not we should be selling these players and we should be encouraging them through and getting the most out of them before we decide whether or not they're good enough.

49:49There's another school of thought was like, be proactive. Just the players are not going to play for Spurs. And the fear is that another club will benefit while we have let them go. And that's a risk of any young player. But yeah, I mean, where are you at with it, John? I mean, again, I heard you boys talking on the Patreon pod. this is Tottenham about the fee for Will Lankshire like 14 million seems shit loads to me loads and like rising to 20 million I'm like he's literally played what four games for us and has had like a half season decent loan for Oxford and we're getting you know potentially like 20 million pounds that's a lot I think that's that's that deal I think seems really good Now, it remains to be seen whether or not this is us selling Kane when he went to Norwich on loan.

50:44And we might go, shit, we just sold the best strike in the country for 20 million quid. What a bunch of morons. We may well do that. But right now, based on what we can see and what we've seen, that to me sounds like amazing business. And then with the other players, they've been on loan again. They're not ripping it up to the point where you're going, they're way too good for that level. They're playing at that level. And again, it doesn't mean that they can't go on. But we don't have the time right now to wait. the first part of this podcast was all about the manager saying we want to win the league we're going to win the league you're not going to win the league with divine donnelly lank shit like you're not and it just depends on what you want do you want to be a club who really wants to push and try and win the league in the next couple of years or do you want to be a club that's going to be more patient with those younger players and try to bring those through i think we've been a club that's done that historically and it's worked to a point but now it does feel like there's a real push for we need to have players we're ready to go and are going to push us up the league so i think we've the deals that we have done even like the likes of vuscovic and people like that we've even put in buyback clauses or um sell-on fees or first refusal clauses so that there's at least we've always got skin in the game with these players in their future so that there's like always a way for us to benefit somehow if they do turn out to be good i think this is like very encouraging the way that we're like treating this.

52:03This is very different to what we've seen for the last 15 years, basically. And so I'm curious to see how it pans out and how it continues. But I think we have to look at this positively, personally. Yeah. It's like one in hand is worth two in the bush. Yeah. Two in hand is worth one in the bush. What is it? A bird in hand is worth two in the bush. Basically, what you have is better than what you theoretically have. Yes. I know that John that's why I said it why didn't you say it properly then I forgot the actual exact metaphor so don't come for me when you've forgotten it I'm not coming for you well it sounded like it was a fucking hand in your face is worth two in your mind alright think about that exactly like fuck these if they're not good enough they're not good enough if we can't train them we can't train them just buy better players buy the best like it's not important for youth players to get through to the first team it's important to have the best possible first team possible.

53:04If you have shit loads of money like we've got in the moment, this isn't the time to divert young players. It ain't. And deep down, we all know Will Lancer wasn't going to make it as a top six, top four side. And what are we aiming to do? We're aiming to win the league. So do we have time to make Will Lancer

53:26a sub, lower level Premier League striker? No. It's not on us. He can do it elsewhere. It's fine. I wish him well. I wish him well at Modersboro. I hope he does well. I hope they get promoted. I hope he scores 20 goals in the championship. But we're beyond this. This is not... We haven't got time to do this anymore. I think it's also dependent on the player because if you want to make it a Premier League club, you want to make it Tottenham, you want to be Tottenham's number one striker or whatever, then you would be happy enough to accept loans going to either europe or championship or whatever john like you were just saying about kane like how many fucking loans did he go out on and how many times did he say well i want to play all the time i want to be first team otherwise i'm off yeah you know he just bided his time waited for his chance he knew he had that in him that he was going to make it.

54:23He was laser focused and then he got his chance. And, you know, look at him now. So if you're a player and you have that self-belief and you're like, do you know what? I actually, whether it's at Tottenham or whether it's at Brighton, whoever, I want to be in a first team somewhere. That's all I want. That's absolutely fine. That's cool. And you can go, you can be sold and do that. But then there are going to be other players that are like, I want to make it at Tottenham. I'm at a Premier League club it's never going to get better. I fully believe in myself. You can loan me to wherever. I will learn educate, come back.

55:03There might be a new manager in. He might take a fancy to me. I might go out on another loan. It might be whatever. Depends on what the player wants as well. If William Sparnett gets through to the first team by being brilliant, that's an example to the players of his year group or the younger players that are beneath him. So that's how good I need to be. That's how hard I need to work. That's how I get into the first team. It's just not nursing players into the team with a bit of potential who don't actually improve the first team. O 'Reilly goes into Manchester City side and improves the first team.

55:39So did Phil Foden. So did Ledley King at Tottenham. So did Harry Kane. So if they, I think we just can't spend too much time on peripheral talent. Just get them sold. And given the way the rules are now, it's massively beneficial to sell players that come through the academy because it counts as 100 % profit and£28 million on top of the idea of selling Vyskowicz, or not the idea, the reality of selling Vyskowicz as well as perhaps Lucas Barava as well. It means spending power becomes significant. John, EfficientFan says, are you getting tired, as tired as I am, about City hoarding Savinho unless they get ridiculously overpaid?

56:26So there has been a rumour come out that while Spurs really want Savinho, Man City want too much money for him and we're not willing to pay what they want. It's annoying, isn't it? Because you're just like, you know, to the question, it's like they are essentially hoarding him. Like they're not playing him. They're not going to play him. And he's just going to sit there. Like, as you know, I'm normally an advocate in this scenario of like, well, I'll just pay what they want to get him. But I do think like you can do that with certain players. And there are certain players where it's worth holding out a little bit longer for and soon if you can do in a deal.

57:01Yeah, he doesn't move the needle enough to overpay him. Exactly. And there isn't much, you know, noise about other clubs. We're not competing with other clubs. so I think with this one as much as I would like us to sign him because I do think he's a good player that improves that position I think it is worth like trying to negotiate for a bit longer whereas you know the likes of Tonali and Fanez they were clubs sniffing around we got that done early so yeah I don't think our whole strategy just needs to be overpay for every player ever and just like you know blow a load of money just for the sake of it I think we have to be strategic with when we decide to overpay and this is one of them where I think let's let it run a little bit longer because ultimately City will also have their targets.

57:39They've also got to think about how they balance the books and they're posturing for a bit. It's frustrating because I think we all expected him to get done ages ago and it hasn't happened yet. But I expect that that will get done and there'll probably be a compromise somewhere along the line. Yeah. Agreed. I think that makes complete sense, doesn't it, Ricky? I mean, it's been talented closer towards 70 mil. I feel much more comfortable with like 40, 50. Yeah. And so you don't want the club to spend 70 million. It's not our money, right? It doesn't matter to us. If they think he's worth it, he's worth it.

58:13But it doesn't feel right. The value doesn't feel right. 70 million doesn't feel right. Top end, I was like 55, 60. Okay, right. Put a line in the sand, 60, done. 70 feels, come on, man. Especially when we've got players in that position. Let's not be silly. Let's not take the piss here. Yeah. To quite Hodgson. Just relax.

58:42we're moving towards the end of the pod obviously right now but we don't he said we don't get any more signings where do we finish with this squad boys as it is

58:58interesting with this squad right now I'm still saying I'm still saying Champions League top five with Deserbi as well with Deserbi running like

59:13what's the problem riddle it out right if the season starts and let's say Kudos is not fit because currently you know he's a bit behind we have basically no right winger we have one striker in Solanke who basically didn't play the second half of last season and Richarlison so like neither of those you're like yes we've got a quality striker the left hand side is tell because we haven't signed a savina or anyone like that so immediately that that's your front three is let's say we play spence right wing because we literally have no one else or a youngster like immediately that is way below champions league level teams the rest of the team fine like i don't really have an issue with that i feel like if we don't make other transfers across the team's fine but that front line does need serious investment and so if we don't make another signing from here the best I think we could realistically hope for is like sixth or fifth John do you think that we shouldn't have invested nearly 200 million pounds in the midfield and should have invested in the front player if it meant not signing to Nale and Fernandes no I think I I think we basically have to spend shit loads of money and that was my point at the sort of January time of last season and was my feeling like after Andrew's season has been basically feeling for like three seasons which is you keep saying we want to invest loads of money we keep seeing performances going backwards like we have to invest this summer which is why i've been so happy with seeing like what we're doing because i'm like there is no well should we spend here instead of there we need to spend where we need to spend there can be no excuses there can be no like well we bought to nali and fernando so that's why we haven't strengthened the front No, you needed to strengthen the midfield.

1:00:56You need to strengthen the front. So in my opinion, if we don't make potentially three signings in attacking positions, they have failed. And not just a bit, quite drastically. Like I said, if you just read what we have available now, that is nowhere near good enough. Like nowhere. That's not good enough to finish in Europa League places. It really isn't. We have basically no right winger. we have a left winger who in tail is like hot and cold and should be a rotation option option there's no cover for him currently aside from mikey moore who's been on loan in scotland and solanke basically had no season last year and richarlison is richarlison that's just miles off it miles so you have to they have to spend maddis is still coming back from injury he's not going to be like you're fine and this isn't i mean we've already spent 260 million euros in in this transfer window.

1:01:53We are selling players. We do have the opportunity to spend more, but it just shows you how unbalanced the squad is. The terrible squad building that went on before, has been going on for four years. And we're left in a situation where we've got talented players that we can sell on and generate revenue. But I don't think any, if we spend another £100 million, you're talking about sort of Man City when they were squad building under the Sheik Nassau. But if we're talking about like, we've currently got Vuscovic and now this other 25 million, right? So like that's the best part of like 75 million.

1:02:35We're talking about Romero, let's go worst case scenario, like 40 million pounds, right? So like we've already cut through over half of what we spent, right? So immediately that's like another 100 million we could spend again. And then we've got potentially Bergvall, they're talking like nearly 60 million for him. if you cash in maybe 40 40 45 maybe let's say in the middle 50 mil loads loads of money let's say goes 50 mil then you get rid of like papa matassar 20 mil let's say like worst case scenario you sell vicario for 20 suddenly it's like we haven't spent anything and this is what i mean like we we shouldn't fall into the trap of thinking suddenly they've completely changed and we're we're like spending shit loads of money no they at the moment they've spent appropriately now if They really want to show us what is capable.

1:03:19And we're selling these players to enable more spending, which is what I think is happening. I'm not slagging them off. But we do have to spend. I think and expect us to spend another 200 million. And our net spend will finish around 200 million, which is what we are currently at. Because with sales and various bits and pieces, we need to. We need to catch up. John, you used to always bang on this drum about saying that when it comes to the end of the season, we buy a few players. to kind of catch up. But it wasn't to catch up. We were just maintaining because everyone else is buying. So we're buying as well.

1:03:54So we were staying at the exact same level because everyone else is strengthened. And we need to go above and beyond what we're doing within the transfer market. You're right. I think, you know, we do. Like we're saying about the two kind of central midfielders and spending that money and saying, you know, that's our job done. No, we do have to go further. Like we were saying about Kudus, he's not ready. Left-hand side, it's not going to be Terrell as a first starter. We do need someone else there. Striking option, I think we could do refreshing that as well. So I do feel like we still need to go into the transfer market and shore up those bits up top as well.

1:04:39Yeah, 100%. This isn't about the status quo because our status quo is 17th. That's where we finish twice. If you want to finish fourth, you need to spend a club who's finished fourth, and you need to catch up that difference between league places. So that is like spending way above a club who's finishing fourth. And to your point, Flav, it's like spending Man City under Shade Man Sook. Yeah, because we're so far behind. We've not done that. We haven't even maintained the status quo. We've gone backwards. So now we've got to catch that gap up, and the gap's massive now. So yeah, this is what I mean.

1:05:12I'm pleased with what they've done to this point. But if they don't add, if they don't spend another 200 million on our attack, they have done no different to what Levy's done. It's exactly the same. We haven't moved forward. I'm not saying that's what they're doing. I'm just saying that's what I expect because it does feel different. And the sort of vigor that they're getting rid of these younger players and they're making funds available, that suggests to me they're gearing up for another batch, another go. Clear the decks, let's move forward with the next investment and let's really go for this because that's the only way we move forward.

1:05:44Yeah, I agreed. Ricky, anything else? No. Good. Bye. Bye.

We also get into Romero's expected departure, the excitement around Luca Williams-Barnett, the transfer strategy, Savinho, youth sales, and ask the big question: if the window closed today, where would this Spurs side actually finish?
