In short

This Q&A episode of Fighting Cup is mostly about Tottenham Hotspur transfer talk and club strategy, plus some off-topic banter and listener questions.

Guests

Josh James, a Tottenham-supporting comedian/podcaster with an expanding comedy profile and a “Josh James Show” podcast; and John Bass, a long-time Spurs-related comedy/podcast figure who previously appeared on the show and discussed touring and recent live success (e.g., Hackney Empire).

Key claims

De Zerbi is portrayed as a major driver of football decisions, with credit also due to Daniel Lange and the City-group administration/legal work. “Bombas” (a fan term for big signings) is expected soon; they debate whether it’s Savinho.

Notable examples

comparisons between Dominic Solanke and Matisse Tell; Savinho’s injury layoff and prior Girona/City form; Jed Spence’s potential sale vs keeping him as rotation; and Sol Campbell’s Arsenal defection as a Spurs-Arsenal rivalry trauma. They also discuss Bergvall potentially leaving for large offers, and Jed Spence’s value as cover for Porro/Robertson.

1:24It's the fighting. Clock! Fuck a camel, shut down! Hello and welcome back to the Fighting Cup podcast. It's Thursday, which means it's a Q &A podcast. I'm joined by the amazing Josh James. How are you doing, Josh? I'm very good, Flav. How are you, mate? Well, we record... Sorry, and John Bass as well. Yeah, I'm here as well. All right. Of course, John. I've lost it, John. It's been about a year or so since you come on. It might have been a little bit longer. And we... I think John put me on to you originally. and your skits were coming up on Instagram quite a lot, but things have shifted. It feels like it's sort of exploded a little bit over the last year.

2:03Your comedy, your podcast, you've got a new special coming out. It feels like from the outside looking in, you're doing very well. Yeah, that's not the case. That's all. Yeah. And it'll never be enough. If I were in movies in Hollywood, then I'd still be fucking miserable. Sorry. That's all right. That's fair, isn't it? yeah of course of course oh my equivalent would be like i'm i'm looking at a picture of chris cowling talking to veno van katesham earlier and i'm like how the fuck has he done that i'd love to be doing that yeah no it's yeah it's been it's been going all right um podcast is people seem to be enjoying the podcast uh that josh james show available on all the streaming platforms it's great um so that's good the tour finished in april which sold really well john i think you to the Hackney Empire show didn't you?

2:52I did mate, I did. Yeah which was great and yeah you're just always looking for the next thing really. I think probably what makes me work so hard is just that feeling of you never feel like anything's enough and you don't, I'm bad at this but I should enjoy it more because my missus tells me like even when good things happen I don't really enjoy them. It's just like, it's just, oh, we do it, you know, and we crack on to the next thing. You don't like sort of lording it too much or big yourself up too much, you know? It's like supporting Spurs, basically. Yeah, exactly. I'm not a bit like that.

3:32I'm like, I'm totally a pessimistic Spurs fan. Like whenever, get a new manager or we sign a good player, I'm like, yeah, but I just got this under, I actually blame probably Spurs for this whole sort of poor mentality I've got, really. Because I'm just like, well, yeah, it's good and we'll probably be a little bit better. But eventually, it will just, it'll all end in tears. It's all going to go away, isn't it? It's the risk, it's the fear that all this will disappear. So you have to just keep working hard, right? And the same with Spurs. You're winning in Bilbao and it's followed by the worst ever year of following Spurs.

4:09That is classic, classic Spurs. and I would say Spurs is a good, yeah, it's a good sort of copy of my life, really. That's how I feel about my life. I'm like, oh, this is good. This is going well, but there's going to be something horribly tragic around the corner, which is going to take me off this perch. You know what I mean? So good. That's good. I'm glad you're here. I know. So anyway, you've got to be positive. I think this year, Spurs, we're going to be better and I think we're going to finish six, Dave, 100%. Yeah, yeah. I mean, any kind of progress is fine, right? I do feel like, though, that things might be different now.

4:54And I think a lot of that is down to the Zerbi. I don't know if you saw his comments earlier. So, Josh, do you spend much time on social media talking to other Tottenham fans? Not at all. Right. Do you spend much time talking about football on social media? There's no right answer to this. I'm just getting a gauge of whether or not this is... My answer is no. I'll make a joke. Do you know what a bomber is? Say again? Do you know what a bomber is in terms of transfer? A bomber. No, right. So what it is, I don't know where it came from, but there is this thing where fans, if you sign a player, like when we signed Tonali or Fernandes, that's called a bomber.

5:32And it's now entered the football lexicon mainly by fans and maybe Fabrizio Romano. Our manager, the manager of our football club just this morning said expect another bomber soon which is not language managers should be used it probably needs to be a striker doesn't it which breaks my heart because I've always sung Solanke's praises because that's such an odd job coming into Spurs after the best striker we've ever had play for Spurs, Lee, if you come for our academy, he was England captain, who probably will probably be the best, most prolific striker we ever see at Tottenham. So for him to come in, I knew that people would be comparing him against Harry Kane.

6:21And I think he works incredibly hard. I think he's very strong. And he probably doesn't score as many goals as we're going to need him to. But I like Solanke you know but if I'm really honest I'm like you know we could probably do another striker I was saying to someone the other day I was like imagine remember that era where we had Robbie Keane Berbatov and Defoe and it was Berbatov and Keane starting and Defoe couldn't get in the team and I'm like wow I'm like how much would you pay for a Jermaine Defoe now for me that's probably an 80 million pound player At least, yeah. Couldn't even get in our side.

7:04Couldn't get in our side back then. There was one time where we had Darren Bent, no, what was it? Berbatov, Keane, Defoe, and there was one other. Darren Bent. It was Darren Bent, wasn't it? I feel like it was. Yeah, Darren Bent. Yeah, he was uses for us though, wasn't he? He was, but in his career, he is a class striker. In the modern era, that forward would have cost you over 200 million. Easy, over 200 million. Mental, isn't it? I've done a shoot for Ninja Kitchen with Darren Ben. Really nice guy. And I was talking to him about Spurs, and obviously I didn't really go into it. I was thinking, you had a hard time at Spurs.

7:46The fans didn't really get a ball with you. You had Harry Redknapp going like, oh, my nan could have scored that. That impacted him really badly. I remember him saying how badly. You could tell because he was talking about how he supported Arsenal, and I didn't even want to pull him up and go, but mate, you played for Spurs. Because I'm like, yeah, but we give you hell, didn't we, really? So I was a bit like, fair enough, you know. John Boy, this bomber that De Zerbe's talking about, who do you think it is? Because I don't want the bomber to be Savinho. I want it to be a player that I haven't heard of because I kind of feel like Savinho's going to get done.

8:23It's been talked about for a year. I'm not really excited by it anymore. It's just, I know about it, right? it's about knowing what's in your Christmas parents before you open them. Yeah. Well, first of all, I do like this transition that managers like, you know, back in the day, it used to be like every manager wore a suit. And then it started being like trousers and like a polo. And then the odd manager would just wear like a track suit. And then Pep came along and it's Stone Island. And now we've got managers using Bombard. And it won't be too long until people are like, oh, yeah, today we were doing bits up front.

8:53You know what I mean? Because it's going to be like proper gully Premier League. I'm quite looking forward to that. In terms of Bombas, I do think it'll be Savinho because I think that managers, players and stuff, they're not really tapped into social media like we are, where it's been relentless for basically since last summer, going Savinho to Spurs is going to be the big deal. And they're probably thinking, oh, we're working on this in the background and the Spurs fans are going to be buzzing when this happens, a big signing from City. But we've all been basically edging for the last three months for this to happen.

9:27So I'd still be happy, but you're right. If it just came out of left field that we'd signed Mbappe, I'd be probably, you know, pretty excited by that. But I imagine it will be Savinho. And we shouldn't let the fact that we have been basically edging for this orgasm for ages ruin it. We should still enjoy it. I mean, how good is Savinho though? I've never really seen much of him. You watch the clips on YouTube and you're like, oh, he looks skillful. But how good is he? I mean, our wide players, they're not the best at the moment, are they? I don't think. Well, Matisse Tell impressed massively, didn't he, against Sydney FC.

10:03There were times last season where we relied upon him. I think it's not, even if we sign Savinho, it's not a given that he starts on that left-hand side. I think he's got to go up against Tell. I've got to say, I don't think, I think Tell's a Premier League player, but going back to the Harry Kane's lanky point, it's very hard for me to get excited about Matisse Tell when I've seen the likes of, you know, Bale, Son. I know, we can't live like that, Josh. You know, it's like I look at Tell and I think, surely we've got to go for better than that, you know? Imagine if you went out with a worldie, 10 out of 10.

10:43Are you saying you're never going to have sex with another woman again? Of course you are. You might not enjoy it as much, but you're still going to do it. Of course, but it's got to be another 10, hasn't it? But there ain't that many about, Josh. I'm saying we've got to let go of the past. You can't look at Kane and compare him to Zalankin. It's on to anybody. We'll never see players of that ilk again. Yeah, I even think the likes of someone like a Lucas Moura, I think, gave us more than a Matisse Till. Okay, you're not having him. No. Any players you like, Josh? That said, no, I know. But that said, I know that De Zerbi seems to really like him, doesn't he?

11:22He seems to be speaking like he's going to be a big part of my plans. But who do I really like? I've been disappointed to see that Bergvau has been linked away because I really like the way he... I like that sort of footballer, you know? And I think he will grow into a terrific player. So I really, really hope he stays. Van der Ven didn't have the best times last year, but I think he can be a top player. Romero I hope he gets gets gone as soon as possible but yeah I mean that's the trouble with Spurs over the last couple of years Madison I like Madison I think over the last couple of years there's not really been many players that you could get excited about you know and the thing is as hard as it has been supporting Tottenham over the years I mean I grew up in the era when I fell in love with Tottenham was when it was the time when we had, you know, Chris Armstrong playing up front.

12:22Oh, yeah. Iverson. That was a poor team. Yeah, but that weren't team. You know, that was to fall in love at that stage. That means, you know, you're committed and passionate about Tottenham Hotspur because that was a hard team. But there was one player that made me fall in love at Tottenham and that was David Ginola. I know, same. And looking at Tottenham last year and you're like, listen, we've been bad before. plenty of times but usually with Spurs you've got one player that you can get a bit excited about and then you sort of think oh that you want to go watch I can't say I didn't feel like there was one of those last year nah no no it was a bad season but Josh sorry Jordan what was you going to say?

13:04yeah so I wanted to make a I wanted to give you an alternate view Josh on tell so remember last season when we were obviously like in the relegation scrap with West Ham and Somerville was like ripping it up and everyone was like even Flav was like oh some of them when I saw a player we knew he was quality right how much has he gone for to sell you how much has he gone for shit loads how much has he gone for loads of money like what is it 60-70 mil yeah easily right Tel scored more goals more assists but you can't that's not no don't just shake your head like you've made the world's greatest point John there's so much more to that's exactly what I'm doing that's exactly what I'm doing football's all about data now I'm using data and now everyone's raking me over the coals for it no look people get obsessed and i understand it i i actually agree with what you're saying which is that it's so hard to compare players like solanke and tell because of like what you're comparing it to like it's always going to be a massive drop off but if you if you sort of remove that and just look at it on the basis of like what where they're at this is like what son was in his first season and tells have scored more goals and done better than son did in his first season so like all the signs are there for me that he might be like might become a good player The thing I think that is important, though, is I agree.

14:16He shouldn't be starting for us, though. You do need someone who is like peak age, ready to go now, and Tao is that prospect that comes in and chips in with some goals from that subs bench. It's not Savinho then, though, is it? But this is the thing, right? Savinho is clearly a talented player. He got his move to City from wherever he was, Girona, or wherever he was before because they were like, well, he's ready to play for us. When he first came in, I don't know if you remember, but he was absolutely ripping it up for them. Like, it was mental. And I remember at the time being like, where has this kid come from?

14:49Like, why did no one else try and sign him? Like, this is mad. And then he's had this injury and we've not seen him. And I do think it's that classic thing. Sometimes players, when they're not playing, they get better because people are like, oh my God, they're amazing, they're just injured. Or you just forget about them. And I think Savino's in that latter camp where we just haven't seen enough of him. So it's still a risk because I don't think you can say for definite, like, he comes in and he's the best option around. but I do think you also could if you get him for a reasonable price which is why I think we're you know pissing around with a deal you have got potentially quite an exciting player there One thing to add to that point John Matisse Till is only 21 years old Exactly this is what I'm saying This is what I'm saying Do you know what's funny about a Savinho deal is that he he really wants to come to Tottenham it doesn't make any sense we've nearly been relegated twice finished 17th on the bounce everything that Josh said about assessing our squad is correct right this wasn't and the key point here is he wanted to join before De Zerbe even even was our manager now you can see this is a great project to get hold of let's definitely get involved in this a year ago he was going no I want to go Spurs why tell me one reason why he should join Tottenham how would we before De Zerbe have progressed his career under Thomas Frank fuck me I know it's easy to say in hindsight but he's mental this kid Are you saying, well, maybe we shouldn't get him in because we've got to question his judgment.

16:15Yeah, yeah. He doesn't know what the fuck he's doing. Yeah, he's clearly not the brightest lad, is he? But no, do you know what? I think a lot of players look at it from the point of we're in London, see our facilities, the stadium, the training ground. When we was at the training ground, Flav, not so long ago, you're there and you're like, this is unbelievable. you know imagine going in there every day for work mate you know when you went in there right so me and Josh did the um it's dead talk uh the mental health podcast a while back at the stadium at the training center and did you you because you held the trophy yeah and I held the trophy right the Europa League trophy but what did he did they encourage you to go and do it or I just hung around for a bit yeah they said do you want to hold it and I'm like yeah I'll hold it yeah yeah well I sort of did but it was more like that kid who wanted to play football with the other kids in the park but weren't brave enough to ask I was sort of standing going and the kid goes do you want to have a night can I can I it was so nice weren't it it's a great trophy that one I think it's probably the best looking trophy around yeah maybe the World Cup yeah maybe the World Cup yeah World Cup's no World Cup's probably better I don't know the DAT Champions League trophy I'd probably say better looking than UEFA but it's gorgeous looking trophy.

17:35I don't think, aesthetically, I don't agree. I think ours is better. Kruppi was a player that potentially would have improved our first team and lo and behold, someone made the point on Reddit that somehow players, even players were getting linked with are getting injured now. I got injured for how long? Three to four months. Three to four months. Yeah. Three to four months. So that's that done. It's a shame. Is there any part of you, John, will still just buy him? Yeah. Yeah, I was actually just about to say that. Is there a precedent for basically going, well, he's cropped now for three months, so we'll take three months off the price and we'll still take him, please?

18:13Because that will put a lot of clubs off because obviously they want impact straight away and we would need that straight away. But if that, for whatever reason, just sort of makes them more likely to sell, then I would rather us press on with the right player and have to wait than just panic buy someone. because I think like everyone who's been looking at like the potential options we were just talking about there what we what we used to have in terms of like Berbatov, Keane, Defoe etc like those players there aren't any like the market is so bad it's so bad so I'm like it is a case of going right well we do have basically like one fit forward between Richarlas and Solanke because one's always injured when the other one's fit so can you just get by long enough for when he comes back and would that be better than signing like I don't know Vlaovic on a free who will never be a good fit for us just because he's available and I do think that this is where the difference between like really clear like clever strategy from Vinay and um the Zerbi and the rest of the sort of football inside of the club this is where we're really going to see like how smart and what their actual ambitions are because I think if you think Kruppi's the guy he's the guy now and he's the guy in six months, then just get him if you can.

19:28And we'll have to deal with how that impacts the first three or four months of the season. So I don't see us doing it now, but I think we should still try. It was interesting. I was listening to Ali Gold. How Ali Gold just sits in front of a camera and talks without editing and out stopping for 52 minutes every single time he does it. It is an incredible feat. He just sits down, turns the camera on, just talks coherently for 52 minutes. You do it as well, John, on the John Bass Show, to be fair. Big John Bass Show. Thanks, mate. But it's not an easy thing to do, and for it to be interesting. But anyway, he was saying, Ali Gold was saying that a lot of credit's been given to Raffi Morrison.

20:04Was it Morrison? The guy that's come in from the City group. And it was Ali Gold. I hope I'm not misquoting him, but he was saying it's not him. He's involved in the administration and the working outs and the details of the deal and the legalities and the administration around it. He said all of this stuff is Lange. It is deserving. Really? And Venkateschum is overlooking it. Now, the narrative around Lange, and I think we were all in this boat, is get him out of the football club. Like, get him his shit. What's he done? Look at his body of work. Bearing in mind that Lange was working under the, in a hamstrung environment.

20:44Is that the right way to phrase it? Was Daniel Levy just saying you can or cannot do this. This is what you have to play with. So it may be that Lange is doing a good job, or maybe I think it's certainly unfair to give Deserby all of the credit for all of the work that's gone into it more of an entire shift in the way the football club operates I think it'd be interesting what's your views on Jed Spence stay or go

21:11John I mean I think stay keep him but I don't think he starts this is the trouble I think that he will want to start won't he yeah of course he'll want to start what do you think yeah Yeah, I think basically, so I've been Team Jed Spence from the very beginning, Josh. I was riding for him when Conte was calling him a club signing and me and Flav had many a row about, just play him, just fucking play him. So I obviously love him. So I'm a little bit biased in that regard. But that being said, I do completely understand. To your point, mate, if he wants to play and we really can't see a world where he plays right back ahead of basically World Cup winning Poro.

21:52and then plays left back when we've signed Robertson and we have a doggy. It seems unlikely that he's nailed on to start, but he would definitely be pretty much the best rotation option for both those positions in the league, basically. It's like second choice, right back, second choice, left back. I think he's too good to be on the bench, though, isn't he? And this is it. So if you get a big offer and someone's like, well, we'll give you... What is that offer? It's 60 mil, isn't it? Because it's a left back and a right back. Yeah, for us it is. because we have to buy basically another right back.

22:22And then if you're looking at, okay, you could argue that we don't need another left back, but he covers two positions. So for us, it's really important to have that option. And for another club, they don't have to buy a left back and right back. They just buy Jed Spence and they've got both. £60 million is pure profit as well. And you bought him for£11 million and that's been paid off. Yeah. So if it's that sort of money, then I think as much as it would pain me because I do think you should just accumulate good players, we have to sort of do it. If it's like 30 mil, it's pointless. Because we're not going to get a player who's as good as him or could even just a secondary right back.

22:59We've sold a lot this summer. We probably don't need to sell him for 30 million. What do you think, Josh? I really, really like him. And after that semi-final, I'm like, he's got to start for Spurs. But when I think about it, Poro, obviously, he's just won the World Cup. Robertson, they're probably going to want him in there for experience. In an ideal world, yeah, I'd like him to start, but yeah, it's debatable whether he does. I mean, to be honest, if it's not Tottenham and it's not England, I don't watch loads of football.

25:30I'll just watch the teams I support. So I know Andy Robertson's coming from Liverpool and obviously won loads and super experienced. he starts as well doesn't he comes in yeah I just think he's a crying shame if Jed's too good to sit on the bench really I think this is again though this comes down to take it back to what you were talking about about the sort of like overall strategy of what the club's trying to do whether it's you know Vinay, Langer and now De Zerbi and they're really looking at what it is whether Langer's more involved and Vinay's more involved and they're doing more parts of the deals that's great but I think we all hoped and I think we think it's probably true that De Zerbe is definitely the driving force right about the sort of decisions ultimately in terms of like you know which players are going to go and stay he's seemingly going to get a big say in that if not the final say I think we know that's pretty true because yeah you know he had so much leverage when he came into the club in terms of like what he wanted to to do so I think we have to trust him to a certain extent and like we've got to you know we've got to look at things and think okay he's the manager that we would sort of entrusting to take us you know forward if he feels like look I'd love to keep Spence as a rotation option but he wants to start we've been given a good offer I've got two left backs I've got you know we can bring someone in as a right back for cover for Porro then I'm prepared to let him go then I think we have to kind of accept that and we just have to kind of be prepared that that might be the case and it's also the same Josh you mentioned about Bergvall as well it's the same thing I really like him and I hope we can keep hold of him but if you get again 60 70 million offer and he's basically your sort of fifth, sixth choice central midfielder.

27:07And De Zerbe's like, we've got to let him go. If we put in protections for these players, like first refusal, buyback clauses, sell-on clauses, all that kind of stuff, I think as much as it's painful, we kind of have to accept it if we want to see those big signers coming through the door. And then also, one thing you've got to think, I suppose, I've always said to myself, you can't be too precious about the players that are there at the moment because of the position we've been in the last couple of years. As much as I like Bergvau, well, you know, he's part of the reason why we're 17th. Do you know what I mean?

27:39But there's a lot of people who are scared, doesn't he? He's come out and said, look, I can't convince anyone to stay if they want to go. We weren't even talking directly to Bergvau, where he was saying, do you want to keep him? He says, I want to keep him, but, you know, these players will want to be here. He says, Tottenham Hotspur, even without me, which I loved, because he's like saying, I am the bollocks, but even without me, which is what we need, right? Someone to change the perception in the football club. Spurs are big enough for you to want to play for us. So I enjoyed that. I enjoyed him being very bullish and saying to any players, if they don't want to be here, then you don't have to be here.

28:10You can be a part of this journey or not. It's up to you. Anyway, it's a Q &A podcast and there's... Don't worry, Josh. We're not going to do all these, but it's 122 questions. Jesus. So I'll pick the best ones, starting with... Matreja says, can you include who's going to be on the show on this post from now on so we know who's mum to mention in the hypotheticals right so uh i obviously didn't include your your name in this josh because it would be unfair as a new member for your mum to get coated and john's mum has already been through several bushes yeah uh have you met josh john's mum josh um not recently no no for a while he's taller than him starting to feel bad for john he loves it look at his face he loves it i think there's not there's it's the best way to bond with your mates is basically to just like dig out you know their closest family members i feel like and most specifically their mum yeah there's no one there's no one that you love more than the lady whose womb that you come from you know what i mean so i used to i mean remember that in school Yeah.

29:24Your mutt, like just those two words, your mum. Yeah. Straighten through your heart, weren't they? So that's interesting because for some kids, they would chill with it. They understood it was a joke. There's a couple of kids you knew never mentioned their mums because they'd go nuts. Was you one of them? I didn't get it too bad. Was there a line? Yeah, no, I didn't get it too bad about my mum. Oh, actually, people used to say that my mum was fit, which was irritating. That's worse. I mean, that's worse. Definitely worse. say my mum was really short all the time yeah no they say she fit um which hurt me you know i certainly didn't get it the worst there was there was a guy who whose mum's name was joy and obviously like we ever sing like an assembly like any hymns or anything give me joy in my heart it just go off because everyone would really put the emphasis on joy that's incredible so this this was the benefit of like having not a fit mum is that they use it as a cast like oh yeah i shagged your mum and i'd always be like well then you've had a nightmare because she's butters right because if i just went oh i see that see that old woman over there i had sex with her you'd give me no end to stick that's what you're doing you're just going i see that like sort of older middle-aged woman who's a little bit overweight and taller than you know she should be like i've had sex with her what are you doing so unlucky like the jokes on you if anything yeah you need to up your standards yeah yeah my mum shouldn't be good enough for you yeah my mum's butter so you saying you showed my mum is is not is not the vibe you think it is just just for one last time to mention just just the fact that i mentioned this to josh last night right but the the fact that your your mate nick his mum looks like neil warnock with massive tits it's just really yeah yeah yeah it's come up about four or five times on this podcast i don't want to never not talk about it yeah so neil warnock big old warm up wobbles exactly so yeah i mean like i've explained this many times but she's one of like the nice like she's like the classic mum mum like would always like all the both the brothers their beds would always been made and she'd always like done all the laundry put it away dinner on the table like proper old school mum so i used to go around the house all the time after school and she'd just like look after it and then one day someone just went their mum's got big tits hasn't she and you'd be like you know what she has got massive tits like that is true and then when someone then compounds it by going looks a little bit like neil warnock the image the image of neil warnock now with an explosive brassiere full of massive tits uh it's just so funny that you can't not One of my mates' mums looks like Steve Bruce, which is really unfortunate for her, you know what I mean?

32:20Imagine being married to Steve Bruce, like a female version. Steve Bruce with a vagina. You'd be human, wouldn't you? Jesus. Yeah, that is disgusting. What is it with women that come from your area, John? Where is it from? Bedford. Bedfordshire, yeah. They're all walking around with ginormous boobs. Here's a question for you, lads. If you had to take one football manager

Read the full transcript

32:52and have a missus, have a wife that looks exactly like that football manager just with all the female bits and the long hair, who are you choosing? That's a good shout. So all the hair, but they just have the face of a football manager? Yeah, and a little bit more like a female version, but they look like a football manager. It's like a feminine version of a female. Yeah, that's what you've got to go for. Who's like clean? Who's quite good looking? Yeah, clean shaven. For me, it'd probably have to be Roberto Mancini. Yeah, it's a shout. Yeah, that's not a bad shout, actually. Italian milf sort of vibes.

33:24Yeah, yeah, absolutely. Does a great spag bol. Yeah, you come home and Roberta's doing the dinner. You're like, yeah, this is great. Yeah, Roberta. Roberta. Oh, my God. Yeah, Roberta. Yeah. Roberto Bass. That wouldn't be bad, would it? Decent. That is decent. Yeah, that would do the job. I'll tell you what, Pochettino might be up there. Yeah. He has a bit of a moon head today, doesn't he? It's quite big. He'd be curvy. He'd be thick. He'd have that Latina body, which I'm into that. You'd have a few arguments about the Falklands, no doubt. Don't get started on that. I agree with almost everything he has to say, but I just don't want to hear it again.

34:02It was never there. It was never there. Leave it. Like outside the World Cup, I'm just ringing up Flav going, yeah, you know another thing about the Falklands? We did actually sit down and have 30 minutes about the Falklands. I did give you a good timeline. You did. Can we move on though? Possible. All right, fine. So impulsive. Scott Parker I would have gone for. Just, you know, he's clean shaven. Little Cockney housewife. I'd have quite like that bit. Scott Parker. Yeah, nice. I mean, also can do that little pirouette. So if, you know, you want to get down to business, just straight and stoggy.

34:30Lots of crushed velvet in the house. Yeah, exactly. I'd go for Pellegrini for what it's worth. Manuel Pellegrini. Damn. Okay. All right. Yeah. All right. Just like that. That look. Sort of vampire. I just like that. That look. It's very kind of. Angular. Yeah. It's good. Fantastic. An old. Right. Funnily enough, Impulsive Happiness says, if a genie offered you, if a genie offered you for you to look identical to Mikhail Arteta for a year, so going out in public shagging the misses but we do domestic do the domestic treble would you take the deal would you be Michal Arteta for a year and without question it's not even would you rather obviously you could destroy Arsenal from the inside out that's the best thing to get all the other stuff he's loads better looking than all three of us so yeah speak for yourself I knew John wouldn't John genuinely believes he's the best looking man on earth yeah no not on earth not on earth but on this call I'll take that I'll start with that I don't agree with you all.

35:36Start with that. That's like being the best striker at Spurs.

35:44Someone said at least Flav could be a racist in disguise then. He could ruin Arteta's career while being his true self. No brainer. No issue with Spanish people at all, actually. Some of the most punchable faces in the world, though, are footballers who come from Spain, though. Yeah, that is fair. Do you think? Or Argentina. Argentina, without a doubt. Enzo Fernandes. Oh, fuck. Oh, God. I'm still not over it, you know. No, I'm not over it at all. My feelings were Romero. I thought we should sell him anyway. Yeah. When he wasn't there at the end of the season. I can't back him. No, and we all know.

36:26We all know Cristiano Ronaldo is the greatest of all time as well, so. Exactly. It's the goal of them now coming out, the Argentinian FA going, we'd like an investigation into the corruption in the final because the referee was really biased. I'm like, are you fucking, are you absolutely having a laugh? I couldn't believe in that semi-final, that Simeone's son, right? Yeah. How many? How many did you let him get away with? Like, you can see what he's doing. He had five in the first half. Like, mad. Yeah. I can't talk about it. Otherwise, it will turn into another Falklands. timeline. Yeah, yeah.

37:03I know, like, when Spurs, if Spurs get beaten in the final, would you expect them to watch the people that have won to, you know, watch the trophy lift or would you expect them to turn their backs? No, I didn't, I didn't think too much of that, to be honest. If I'd lost in a final, I'm not, I don't think I'd be there clapping the other team, to be honest. So, that didn't really, I thought that was a bit blown out of proportion but more just the way that they acted during the games and the, you know, I thought, ah, they just all think they're so tasty, don't they? You know? Yeah. It was probably the punch in the Spanish players immediately after the game.

37:38As they celebrate. Yeah, exactly. It was fucking, it was mental that they could, yeah, it's like the bad winners, bad losers tag. It's been highlighted very clearly in this. Zandrew says, who will have more touches in the box by the end of the season? Solanke, Richarlison, Kudus or Flav's mum?

38:01Flav's mum, I reckon. She's 75. No one's going near her box ever again. Thank you. Yeah. I mean. You're still having sex all the time, John. All the time. Well, yeah. I mean, she's produced this. She's probably thinking, fuck, I've wasted this. What else could I have been putting out into the world? Pointless. She probably doesn't feel anything down there after pushing you out. They're just falling out. They're just falling out. someone chucking the christmas decorations out the loft they're just fucking streaming down there uh yard environmental says are you still snorting athletic greens or was that just a grift

38:41look i'll tell you how advertisements work when they pay you talk about them when they don't pay you don't i took athletic greens for as long as they were paying and and then i ran out later and I was like... I tried it. It just tasted like how I imagine matcha tastes like, which is basically like grass and like silt. No, I thought it was a nice sort of chocolatey taste. I genuinely felt a difference drinking it. I wasn't lying about any of this stuff, but I can't talk or carry on talking about them. To be fair, he didn't ask me, he said if I'm still drinking it. I used every inch that they gave me, for sure.

39:23which crosta molika flavour would pair best with a pre-season friendly boys have you tried crosta molika pizza do you like pizza I love pizza mate so these should be paying for this the best chilled pizza you can get in the world is crosta molika it's sensational John have you had it I mean are we talking about like a pizza you buy from a shop and then you put in your own oven yeah correct correct what was it is it almost like replicating like a stone-baked pizza almost 100 it's like it's like it's the standard you'd get in on in like a pizza express or an ask right so that's so that's all right when you're in there when you're paying for it at the restaurant it's like four quid you put it in there it is sensational trust me i'm not i would never have any slander over pizza express pizza express great decent it's always consistently brilliant i mean there better pizzas out there but it's it's really good what um what have you got like sainsbury's or morrison's near you sainsbury's near me yeah sainsbury's all right well they sell them in there do they really yeah next time you go in there treat yourself right i'm gonna have a look good uh this episode is brought to you by state farm listening to this podcast instead of doom scrolling smart move another smart move getting help from one of state farms 19 000 local agents when you choose to bundle home and auto.

He just can't be asked anymore. He's got a job and he's happy and now he doesn't give a shit about any of us. Just make his shit jokes in WhatsApp groups constantly. Flav says you just watched the beautiful divide and listening listen to your really interesting lab interview you mentioned that the rabbi had been a fixture around Spurs for decades what else can you tell us about they don't regularly go to N17 about him he was hilarious in the video so I don't know if you boys have seen there is this a film that we it was presented by Adam Catterall who's is mainly into boxing and USC punditry but he's on TalkSport talking about football and he's put together these series of documentaries about the rivalries in football.

41:46The first one he did was about Spurs and Arsenal. And the main focus of that was the rabbi. So anyone who goes to Spurs would have seen the rabbi around. He's a nutty geezer who's just obsessed with Spurs. But most of it was about the sort of off-the-pitch stuff. Like there was a quote in it that I'm not ashamed to say that I've got a little... My hair's on the back of my neck stood up a little bit when I heard it. where one of the lads from Tottenham went, they may have dominated us on the pitch, talking about Arsenal, but we've dominated them on the pavement. And that's the real quiz. As you say, John, who's the most intelligent person in the room?

42:29Whoever's the hardest. Ultimately, everyone has to agree with them. The pave league, as some of my mates call it. The pave league, yeah. The pave league. Yeah, pretty good. Well, it was interesting. It went into quite a lot of detail about why Spurs and Arsenal hate each other. And it was always my assumption that we just loathed them because we were taught to loath them. But quite a lot of it was about the guy we cannot mention, the man we shouldn't mention, and about him going across to them. And they played the interview where he was asked, are you staying at Spurs? And I don't think I've ever gone back to watch this because it was too painful.

43:07And he says, yes, I'm staying. yes I'm staying I am staying at Spurs and then just goes doesn't say anything and just nips off to Arsenal and signs for them like we know Liguez is a freak but he's been a freak forever I'll tell you what that felt like I mean this has never happened but I remember that vividly when I was younger yeah it almost felt like one of my parents I found out one of my parents was cheating on the other one yeah like the heartbreak I was like what I remember my dad going to Sol Campbell because of Arsenal I'm like he said he was staying I mean it would have been a big enough shot if he had left of course but to go to Arsenal just mad wasn't it yeah he I remember I was at university at the time and I was sitting on the single bed with my missus at the time crazy bitch she was

43:57anyway sorry I had a little did you see my eyes go for a second yeah you got PTSD yeah I have when I went through about Vietnam it felt like just for a second our entire relationship flashed between my eyes but was on the bed and it just popped up with Sol Campbell's face and in the corner Arsenal's emblem I was like what the fuck I couldn't believe what I was seeing yeah that was horrendous it was also a double whammy because like just going on a free basically meant that we'd taken this player through the ranks that we should have profited from so to then go on a free and go to them was like a double like we basically got zero benefit and then had to get the double impact of him going to them lot he said i'll tell you what's been nice and satisfying i know he's been watching his managerial career yeah isn't it that's been i feel like that's been the saving grace it's it's basically proved the existence of karma which is quite nice right it's like if anyone's oh that's mumbo jumbo i'm like is it look at what he's done and then look at look at the rest of his life since that it's basically gone let's just demonstrate that karma's real because this guy's the perfect embodiment of it.

45:07There should be a duty of care. I don't care what happens to Sol Campbell. Everything bad that can happen to a human being should happen to him, right? But he's still getting invited on and big interviews. He was on Stick to Football with Gary Neville and Phil Neville, sorry, Roy Keane and Ian Wright. Massive, massive show. Probably the biggest show outside of actually watching the football in the world. right? The numbers they get, it's mental. And they've got him on there and he's just talking gibberish for about 40 minutes. Yeah. You could see Gary Neville desperately trying to cling on to some sort of thread in this conversation.

45:45He just sat there and went, I could have gone Forrest. I could have gone Forrest. And you're looking at Gary Neville's and you're going, what do you mean? Like, I could have, I don't know why, I could have gone Forrest. Why have you even brought that up? It also sort of makes you realise, oh, why? He did it. He handled the things the way that he did. Because you're like, oh, no, you're, you're fully tapped mate you know what I mean you're not all there when he was talking about on Sky in the World Cup and they were asking about like England's potential route and he went yeah it depends if that one's away or not and they were like well they're all they're all away that's the World Cup mate so look they're all away what was that one where they're like who do you think wins Spain or France he's like I think Brazil yeah yeah that was it it was yeah like you said he's like you can see that He's not all there.

46:35I almost feel like, because he strikes me, he's probably quite book smart, I'd imagine. He's maybe quite intelligent in that way, but often sometimes people that can be really smart in that way. Yeah, he wouldn't leave him running a bath. He'd lost you a little bit, you know what I mean? Did you? No, exactly. He'd either drown himself or forget that he's running. Yeah. Anyway, or he'll just be running a bath. You'll come back and go, what's going on? And your entire lounge furniture is just piled in there. How's that even happened? That's in Brazil. Brazil. Yeah. Brazil. Yeah. I've lost my throat here.

47:13Ravino's the hand. He says, I wanted to ask this question earlier, but didn't want to, didn't want to pounce or take advantage of your uncertainty around the club and the impact it would have on the potential earnings on your potential earnings. If we ended up being relegated, seeing as we're safe now, I will ask it to make up for the loss of revenue from the club being relegated and thus having to look for new revenue streams did you ever consider the show being called the fighting dick where you and the lads can whip out your cocks and bat them at each other who's paying for that lose more money if anything just putting that on no one's watching it and it's got to support you how's that your solution to us losing money is us just call changing the name of the podcast to the fighting dick and just hitting our cocks against each other it's no also i'm giving away my biggest advantage which is like if it's a regular fight then i'll be the biggest in this scenario i'm the smallest that's a fucking nightmare yours is normal john just massive isn't it that's the problem proportion to my body no i think it is that you know you could probably put it in the sort of you know it's it's ryman league sort of level penis unfortunately but you can't have it all can you oh you got one of them semi-pro penises I did my knee when I was a kid.

48:24Otherwise, I'd have a bigger cock.

48:32I mean, what is it? I don't know. Egg Tart Eater says, what's Tony D up to when will he be back? Tony, I don't know. We can get him back. We can get him back. He just works in school. He works in school. So we record during the day, mostly. so it's hard but Tony D obviously is welcome have you reached out to Devlin yet do you know Devlin at all I do know Devlin if you want me to reach out to him to get him on I can give him a call for real boom yeah Devlin yeah how well do you know uh yeah pretty well uh from the showbiz or uh yeah he come on my podcast ages ago and uh met up with him a few times I mean what a legend yeah it seems really me my upbringing uh tales from the crypt yeah like for me where i went to school in hornchurch and he was from dagenham and at the time grime was big and i'm like but there was this guy that i could i don't know it was not just fantastic like lyricist and one of the best at doing it but it's also you know from around the corner and then i found out he's sports spurs it was just, yeah, he was my idol, you know?

49:41So pretty cool guy, but oh yeah, I'll see if I can get him on for you. Mate, I mean, look, even if you can just ask the question, that would be incredible. If he doesn't want to do it, I fully understand it. But yeah, no, mate, there's been a couple I'd have loved to have done. And it was David Bentley and Devlin were always up there. So I've been listening to Devlin since, like you say, since Tales from the Crypts, that mix that he had. Absolute legend. He went after Wiley. Do you remember that? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Anyway. Yeah. But yeah, that was a class. Thank you, Josh. It'd be amazing. Yeah, absolutely.

50:15No worries, mate.

50:20So a couple of people have been talking about the fact that it could be Gakpo, John, that potentially comes in as a number nine. How does that leave you feeling? Well, as previously discussed, it's not a great striker market. And is he even a striker at this point? I don't really I'm so confused with modern football as to like where players play like I thought he was like sort of wide player who can drift inside he's got the build of a centre four he's got a big lad he's like powerful strong I know there's a lot of talk of like sort of converting him to more of a nine which I think is quite interesting because he like I said he's got all the attributes to do that and Liverpool fans for whatever reason they're not they're not that fussed about him and it feels like someone we could get and you know like sometimes and this is where the sort of romanticism comes in football sometimes it doesn't work out for a player at a club they move club they change position I mean we saw it with Dembele remember when he was at Fulham and he was sort of like a wide forward and everyone was like this guy's really talented but you can't score he doesn't get assists and then he sort of moved into more central position when we had him and then all of a sudden you're like oh shit like this guy's next level like you know that happens like once every like decade that something like that happens to that extreme maybe that could work but it feels like a long shot to me um i've got all the time in the world from him um i don't know if you saw when he lost his daughter well i think it was um it was in the womb so it wasn't like uh it's no less more of a travesty she was quite far along he misses but he played in the world cup um two days after it happened and he scored a goal and just broke down in tears on the pitch and that really got to me like i watched that i was in like i can't lie that there was a tear that rolled down my my face when i watched it and i just thought it was a great finish as well and i just think that maybe he's he's not just because of that but he's he's probably looked under rated even by liverpool fans i think there's much better I've always been impressed with him when he played for the Netherlands.

52:26Is he better than Solanke? I don't know. I don't know if he is. He's certainly better than Richarlison. So, I don't know. Do you want to try and ship Richarlison out? Tyo's got about time. He's got a year left in the contract. If you can get anything for him, he's got to go. I mean, he tries hard, doesn't he? His application. Sorry, my mum called you. His application. She knows I'm on, does she?

52:57I knew it as soon as it came out of my mouth I knew it that poor woman what was I saying Battle of Charleston he works hard yeah he did I was impressed with his work rate and I thought that if there was a way of us staying up it would be because of that kind of work rate but he's just pants isn't he this touch is is terrible like you know like we all do it where you go to finish that or like oh you got to do better there or you know like this and then you realize these players are like completely elite and like in reality you could you can't do anything the only professional top flight player where i've gone there's one thing i can do better than him is my first touch is better than richarlison i'm pretty confident that like his first touch is so horrific it makes me question how he ever made it as a professional well i mean if you if you hate his first touch don't you don't want the lie of each year anyway yeah really is his first touch bad i mean yeah about as bad as jimmy savils i um if you just watch it just watch his his first touch in a game you'll you'll start to think that you you could definitely make it in football what player that i used to look at and i was like i don't know how you're a professional footballer is Paul Stateri.

54:13Do you remember him? Yeah. He was so bad. I'm like, you don't look like, you look like you've picked up playing football a couple of years ago. I'm like, physically, he must have just been a beast, you know. He was so bad. Timothy Tuber used to feel like that about him as well. So there's this lad, there's this lad just, he's started watching the World Cup, American lad, and he's like, he wants to be a midfielder. Oh, I see that. The comments are fucking hilarious. as like the way you kick a ball makes me angry. Yeah. You look like you've just learned how to use your legs. Yeah, awful. Bless him.

54:49Bless him. Bless him. Yeah, Stel Terry, one, the West Ham goal, like absolute ledge for that. And two, he always just reminded me of, you know, Jim's dad in American Pie. That's all I could ever see. Yeah, he did it, just like him. I just thought he was him all the time. I could never get that on my head. Yeah, bless him, Paul Stel Terry. Grapp93 says, I mean, actually, yeah, I'm an American and going to my first match day in August. Don't say match day in the UK. If you need little tips, we don't say match day. Just say going to my first game in August, although technically it is a match day, for the Newcastle match.

57:57Yeah, that's a geezer. Who was this guy that was getting interviewed about all the stuff off the pitch? What, the Arsenal geezer? No, the Tottenham geezer. Yeah, there were three or four of them. There was a gentleman called Trev. There was two more. I don't remember their names. They used to be active once upon a time. Right, okay. Yeah. Was it Trevor Tanner? Trevor Tanner wrote a book. It's a different Trev. he wrote a book called Tottenham Massive I think which is about the hooligan day I remember him on the back in the day but what he spoke about was that Seven Sisters Road so if the first time you're there as John says it's a good 35 minute walk straight line down the Seven Sisters Road which is a famous road in North London as well it's the actual road that connects Tottenham to Arsenal in that it's one road from their stadium to our stadium a long road and the end of Seven Sisters Road where you get out of Seven Sisters Station you walk towards the Spurs Stadium and you can see it coming in the horizon and there's pubs on the way you've heard Ricky talk about enjoy caf, you know there's a caf just called enjoy, that's it, nothing else It's a bit like all the lads at Josh's school, enjoy Yeah, enjoy a bit of joy That's very good John Thanks man Quality stuff Yeah, so there's loads of stuff like that.

59:24So yeah, loads of pubs, get in the pubs, go in the beehive, elbow room. Yeah, just enjoy yourself. Great.

59:36What was the most dreadful episode for you guys to record and why? Good question. The dreadful episode. Schnuffle says that my money is on the Qatar shit. What the fuck was that, by the way, Gareth? How about go fuck yourself, mate? I don't know. The fighting clock's easy. It's not. You ever had a difficult guest?

1:00:04We've had people through the years it just didn't work. The chemistry wasn't quite right. No. That's what's without it, chemistry. Yeah. Your podcast, Josh James, it's you and you've got your mate with you. Chris White, aka White Boy, that's it. White Boy, right. so you're it works because of how you interact with each other 100 yeah if you couldn't do that it wouldn't work that's that's how we get a lot of requests and people going can i come on the pod and like i know it's a bit of a shout i wouldn't i would love to come on the pod but you can't you can't just drop a you can't drop just drop a character in and just hope that it works yeah yeah yeah yeah can i go quickly yeah crackle makele crackle we're gonna finish anyway what about you John I remember was it AC Milan Champions League under Conte we were losing 1-0 and he brought on a defender and I remember I was absolutely fuming in the game and this was right at the end of his time and there was so much negativity and it was just horrific and we did a pod the next day and I just remember it being you know me mate I'm always looking for the positives I'm always looking for an angle and we finished the pod and we were all just like fuck there was no there was no silver lining there was no cloud we were just like i don't know where we go from here it just felt really fucking bleak and hopeless i always remember that game because i think romero got sent off as well yeah we were down to 10 and then we had we just needed a point i think to get through and then we just basically shut up shop to make sure we only lost one near when a game we needed to equalize him it was mental and I was so fuming at that point.

1:01:45What was the podcast after that? Yeah, because that was a Champions League game. Yeah, I remember just being like, I've got no silver lining, I've got no spin, I can't, you know, I'm always optimistic so I always just give my actual opinion. There's no like, oh, I'll just try and bright side this if I don't feel like there is. And most of the time I can find a silver lining because that's just my personality. But in that one, I think I just went on a proper rant. I was just fuming about it and I remember it being shit and it just stuck in my mind. As soon as they asked the question, I was like, yeah, I remember that being horrible, that pod.

1:02:18But that's probably about it. Most of the time, I'm just chatting to your mates and having a laugh, isn't it? It's fine. T.D. says, can we all agree that Flav is right? Transformers cartoon from the 1980s is the best film ever made. Correct. Isn't it, John? Yes, it is. Josh, have you seen that? Of course I have, mate. I've been in 1990, so a bit off my time. Maybe. Yeah, this is the greatest film ever made. so yeah it's a cinematic masterpiece remember the one that came out with shia laberf in the like naughties yeah dreadful terrible right so when you go i like transformers a movie people like oh that's a bit shit but like imagine you just said oh you know godfather part two that's my favorite movie most people go oh yeah it makes sense that's when me and flabber talk about transformers the original movie the cartoon version that's how we're thinking about it like that like well obviously this is a cinematic it's better than godfather part two yeah yeah it's it's it's fucking brilliant uh it's you know just just next level cinema and they're re-releasing it Yeah, 40 year anniversary.

1:03:13Amazing. I'll go watch it. Mate, come. Don't say that, Josh. Don't say that if you don't mean it. Because it sounded like you didn't mean it. I don't think you're going to go watch it. You're just placating us. You don't have to. We're fine with how good it is. You watch it. Don't watch it if you don't want to. I will. I'll try and watch it. Mate, take the kids. Take the kids. Mate, yeah. It's effectively a cartoon, but adults love it. Yeah, but it's actually quite traumatic. So, you know, I'm not going to give any spoilers away, but it was basically like the first ever, like, sort of cartoon that decided that they'd just do something completely mental and basically loads of kids at the time just cried their eyes out at the cinema and have been traumatised ever since.

1:03:49So, you know, proceed with caution. If it was released now, there'd be like a trigger warning at the beginning for kids because they'd be like, this is mental. Okay, boys, I think we can wrap this up now. Thanks for having me, lads. Just a quick reminder of what you're up to and what's coming, Josh. so I've got a comedy special out called Doing Alright it's spelt without a G on the doing it's on YouTube it's basically 40 minutes of my tour that's just been that we took all over the country it's a lot about sort of British culture trying to do well for yourself in life family and sort of my observations on that and I've got a podcast called That Josh James Show that you can catch now on YouTube both of them are on my YouTube channel at Josh James E so yeah go watch them yeah um they're fantastic and it's like it's you really kind of like i say from an outside you really kind of exploded it feels like um and uh yeah there's always the shorts you did you used to do on your instagram always fantastic but it just feels like it's all coming together for you mate and it's uh it's really good to see appreciate that uh we'll finish on with this um just so round it off as why not um i didn't realize your mum was from birmingham flav that gummy brummy is even more appealing.
