In short

Spurs season preview and fan Q&A, centered on whether the club is “back” after finishing 17th, with heavy discussion of potential double signings from Manchester City (Savinho and Marmoush), transfer expectations, and how De Zerbi’s style will work early in the season. They also debate playing out from the back, handling teams that sit in low blocks, and patience after a rocky start.

Guests

Jonathan Bass is mentioned as a planned joiner but doesn’t appear until late; the episode is mainly hosted by Flav, Ricky, and Alex (plus John once he joins). No other named guests appear.

Key claims

If Spurs land Marmoush and Savinho (and possibly Gakpo), they could challenge for the league (a “Leicester” narrative). Playing out from the back should be comfortable with Kinski, Sanesi, Van Hecker, Tonali, Fernandes, Porro, and Robertson, but low-block teams will be the real test. Fans should expect early slip-ups under De Zerbi but trust the direction.

Notable examples

Leicester’s title win as the “do a Leicester” comparison; a past out-from-the-back collapse vs Man United involving Forster; references to Brentford as a non-defining early test.

0:59We're back. We're so back. It's fucking great. Because we did leave. Yeah. We did leave. Yeah, we did. Undeniably, we left. But now we're back. We're so back. Yeah, the wife might have got a new bloke. Yeah. But we're back now. He's got a slingy zook. Yeah, yeah, yeah. We're so back. Why are we back? Well, there's rumours of it that we could be making a double sign-in from Manchester City for Savinho and Mamouche. We spent the last two weeks going, there's no number nines. There's none. There's none. They're not out there. You're like, can't afford us to get us a man. They're just not out there.

1:47We're going to have to play the season with Richarlison again. It's not our fault. It's not our club's fault. Richarlison scores against Hoffman. And I'm like, not you. Not you. Stop scoring, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Wait, wait, listen to that. When does Herbie come in? Don't do that again. We're not keeping you. Don't matter how many times you do that. We're not keeping you. And then yesterday, it came out of nowhere and we just went, oh, yeah, by the way, Spurs win for Mamouche and it's advanced. And you're like, oh, fuck, there is a number nine, a good one. Forgot about him. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

2:20So in the spirit, not to go too early, of Mamouche signing for Spurs, there are transfer deals that get you erect. That is one of them. Yeah. We've got the world's hardest Mamouche quiz. Oh, fucking delightful. Yeah, you'll like that. Good. You'll like that. You'll like that. I'm not sure if anybody does like it. That's the problem. I'm doing it. I do these quizzes. Do people like them or not? I don't know. When we used to do the quizzes back in the day, it was the highlight for everyone. Do you think? Yeah. Everyone loved it. Everyone loves a quiz. Yeah, everyone loves a quiz. Everyone likes to be involved.

2:56Get them involved. You're entertained and you're informed at the same time. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. All right. And this is obviously the Q &A podcast. We are going to be joined by Jonathan Bass, but he's, I don't know what he's doing. Masturbating. Yeah. Calling him Jonathan really kind of, I don't know. he's at work so he's supposed to be finished at three but hasn't responded so he's obviously busy so for now yeah you got you and i um i i released uh possibly the most unpopular episode of the lab that there has ever been and that includes the two ones about qatar fuck what what what what what what why what who is on it no it wasn't i don't think it was the content it was the idea of the pod because i think most people who listen to the pod realize that actually the conversation was fair but the idea of re-evaluating langer's position at spurs reassessing right because it came to me is this the one with dan killie p yeah right okay yeah i listened to that yeah um you know it's bad when you put it on reddit and there is zero up likes and about 50 questions you know you're bad you know it's gone wrong there right most of them it seemed like they were just the idea of like even giving langer even a moment's credit was just very unpopular okay and if you listen to the pod you don't have to listen to it but if you want to listen to it it's a measured discussion and generally we came to the conclusion that absolutely not his position should be regardless of what happens this summer in um it should be under up for debate and possibly should be removed from the football club my thinking about it was ricky was that he was operating under daniel levy who had restricted what he can and couldn't do yeah sure now this new or altered version of enic and i'll get your thoughts on this because dan kilpatrick made of the athletic made an important point he says he doesn't want to call them the lewis family because the lewis kids is like a rebranding of, like they have no responsibility over what Enoch did.

5:10And I thought that was a really good point. I liked it as well. Yeah. And I hadn't, because I've been saying the Lewis kids because it feels different. It's new, but it is a bit of like whitewashing over their involvement in the running of the football club for the last 20 years. Yeah. So I'm going to also, in honour of Dan Kilpatrick, try to say Enoch when I'm referring to the Lewis children. Yeah. but this summer when he's you know the leash is off go and sign the players if we get Marmouche and Savinho that is possibly and I know having great windows don't equate to great seasons that is an outrageous window if we get Marmouche, Savinho to add to Tonali and Fernandes Van Hecker Sanessi and Robertson yeah and the keeper yeah mate I've never seen the like so So I guess my point was that maybe he deserves some slack because he's now been able to work with Freedom.

6:11But I know people weren't ready to hear it. I stand by it to some degree. Yeah, I guess we'll never know. And I guess we'll never know how much involvement Enoch had when it came to how Levy operated. It's all well and good when Levy comes in and says, here's my presentation. All the lines are green. They're all going up. and they're like, well, you're doing a good job, mate. Crack on. But then you don't really get the sentiment behind the fans and the atmosphere and how we're playing, you know, all that stuff until it actually is on your doorstep. And then you realise that, hang on a second, maybe things aren't going as right as they were.

6:50I mean, finishing 17th twice is probably the biggest alarm. It's his fault in a part because even working under the restrictions that we have done previously, the windows have been – We rated every window and we said every single one up until this one on paper is a failure, but you can't even judge this one until they start playing football. Yeah. Yeah. So that didn't go down well. So apologies. I thought it was a good idea. Clearly wasn't. Yeah. So, I mean, what do you think of Marmouche? well i was um i was a bit undecided i'm not gonna lie i wasn't gonna say that i was bowled over i've seen flashes uh city uh city which um you know which are really positive what did frankfurt there was more that i saw so so um ricky can i just ask you quickly sorry yeah did you say that upset everybody yesterday in the group oh it was the Savino it was when Ornstein broke yeah Savino and Mahmoud and I was like it's two huge signings from one of our rivals like as in that we're going to be trying to joshel a position in the league in the same ballpark this this year even though they've got quality, you know, losing.

8:24Exactly. Yeah. And, um, you're adding a lot of context here without saying what you said. Well, that's exactly, that's what I said. That's exactly what I said. It was, it was much more. Go on, read it, go on, read it. Trying to find it. Yeah. Go on. Well, no, hang on. This isn't a game of whether I can find it or not. The game is like, tell us what you said. Well, I was just saying, signing two players from our rivals. Yeah. that are, it's going to be upwards on what's being reported as about 150. million i just didn't know if it would get done considering how long this savigno deal has taken yeah here we go i've got it right here we go everyone's buzzing food chains flying around everyone's going yeah look we're going to win the league talking about talking about ricky out nowhere when city are selling both their players to a rival and have to find replacements it's taken this long to not even sign Savino.

9:19I can't see this happening, but I'm here for it. Well, number one, that tone that you put on, that is not the tone I would have used, right? You're singing mud already by that. You read it out how you meant it then. It was more high-pitched and more excited because I'm here for it at the end. City is selling both players to their rival and have to find replacements and it's taken this long not even to San Antonio I can't see happening but I'm here for it yeah the last bit here but yeah yeah yeah that's kind of yeah yeah yeah it's it's mad responses were shut up dicky bloody hell Rick yeah someone said I've got some starving children over here with their first million weeks do you want to come and eat it

10:07someone's got to be a realist in the group you know someone said Ricky's not allowed to celebrate Marmuchia's goals. You don't celebrate goals anyway because of what the fear might happen. I remember when we were watching Villa and Tottenham, we had a little get-together, Spurs were 4-0 up. And you wouldn't... I think the third one went in there and you didn't move. In case, yeah. In case we lost. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's true. I've sat next to you in the ground and someone has shot and it's like at least 10 yards going over and you're literally... You're back to the goal and you're celebrating with everyone.

10:41like what the fuck it's meant to anything oh yeah I just want to get it oh I thought it had I thought it had I'm there I'm there for the celebrations what's the best part what's the best bit about being a fan he's already gone he's already gone Ricky what's the best bit about being a fan it's goals goals goals so celebrating near goals sure that's fine as well yeah it is yeah yeah if you think they're going in if you think they're going in yeah start go early yeah yeah yeah then you've got more time in it that's good that's a good yeah yeah loads more celebrating the moment more good and the only moment you're disappointed is when the ball doesn't go in the net but like the 30 seconds leading up to the net but a great time imagine if everyone was like that they'd just be like every time we've got past our way like these mild cheers and celebration

11:38what happened don't think glitched out there but don't worry it's all good we're still here we're still here alright it's Q &A Thursday still no John Bass but we'll crack on regardless good spirit I have a question for you if we do sign Mammoucha and Savino what is your most optimistic prediction for the season my most optimistic yeah I am I'm probably going to go my most optimistic. I'd probably say third. League? Who's second? I don't know. Maybe Chelsea. People are saying Chelsea. I don't know why. Yeah. They finished 10th. They're a shambles. They're like... We finished 17th. We literally nearly got relegated.

12:27We're a shambles. Stop being a shambles, Spurs. For the sake. it would be wonderful having, wouldn't it be footballing narrative? We finished 17th and we have a go at the title. Oh, do the Leicester thing. Come on. Yeah, do that. Just do that. If they did it, we can do it. Everyone out there was saying how funny it would be for little Leicester, little soppy Leicester to go and win the title. Why don't we do that with Tottenham? Come on, everyone. Just do that. Just do that. What's your aspirations, Leicester? Well, Leicester did it. and they were rubbish. Yeah. Wes Morgan and Rob Hoof. Yeah. As they're sent about peering.

13:08Exactly. And obviously, Mahrez was just fucking out of this world. But yeah, just do that. Do we want to learn from this or not? Just do an experiment. What happens if Spursy wins the league? The headlines write themselves. Come on. Might as well. Imagine. I'm quite giddy. I feel like I asked you about four questions without oh there he is oh there he is there he is there he is there he is there he is there he is there he is John John John John Bass sorry boys your mums are keeping me busy oh straight away well we're starting the questions then John because you've just been chatting alright let me get because we've talked a lot about Marmouche already one minute nutshell Marmouche go John yes get him in buzzing it's exactly what we need perfect sexy exciting all of the above yes please give him to me and if we get him what happens to Spurs probably league title challenge we said that Ricky made the point just do a Leicester why don't you just do a Leicester exactly just do a Leicester we've had we've had basically a really good window and we've all been saying all we need is a couple of quality players up front if we somehow got Mamouche and Savinho and then if we also got Gakpo, we're going to win the league, aren't we?

14:34We're going to win it. It's not like, oh, I hope we win it. It's like, well, that's basically guaranteed. Guaranteed it's going to win it. What kind of fresh hell would it be having nearly being relegated to then being Arsenal's only challenger for a title? I know it's aspirational. We want to do that, but it will be up against them. I don't know what's worse. Finishing 17 or losing a title challenge to Arsenal. But look, let's not worry about things before they've happened. It's like, if you're in a semi-final, a Champions League. I already feel sick thinking about that. Good one. You've ruined the rest of my day.

15:09Could you imagine though? The stress, the stress related to that. Oh God. Every single minute of every game, you're like, we need to win this. Yeah. From November. Yeah. Yeah. Then we do. Yeah. Yeah. Then we win it. My old man always says that. Before the game, he always goes, we need three points today boy that's the name of the game dad we need three points every game to win every game but he used to listen to Frank when he went we will lose games that fucking conch so Q &A questions boys number one Spirit Witch 538 583 if Ricky looks like Gabby Abonglahore oh for god's sake who would the other contributors have as their lookalikes john looks like jackknife and so does alex actually from i think it's jackknife it's robert de niro film from the 80s wow quite niche yeah doesn't matter um i've had it all mate i've had jack black which was not young alec baldwin yeah yeah i can see a bit of that in you yeah yeah yeah who's the um the guy in a 300 yeah Joe Butler yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah Tottenham yeah yeah I've had that I've had some way worse ones John Leslie back in the day when he used to do clean shaves terrible it was like if you shaved if you had no beard maybe a little bit yeah this was like peak John Leslie sex pest abitipus time and it used to be clean shaven like it was I don't know like 1920 and And we always used to ask girls when we were on lads holidays, oh, who do you know?

17:00What have I looked like? Lookalikes. And she just looked at me straight away and she went, John Leslie. And the lads were fucking dead. Just no pause. She just went, John Leslie. Absolutely dumbass. And then it happened again in Barcelona many years later where I'd clearly, you know, like packed on the pounds. And we were asking these girls, like, who's everyone look like? Everyone got the best lookalikes you've ever seen. It was like, oh, yeah, you look a bit like Brad Pitt. You look like Colin Farrell. And then it got to me, hmm, Jacques Bleck. I was like, oh, fuck. You can fuck off, mate. I'm wrong.

17:32Burgundy says, hi, Flav. My friend at work who I trained up and gave experience to has become the most popular person at work and is usually given the most praise and acknowledgement for work that I showed him how to do. As someone whose colleagues are more popular than him and the thought of more highly, despite only being successful down to your hard work, can you offer some tips on how to deal with this both professionally and personally? Thanks. Say hi to Ricky and Alex for the... That is so... It's so horrible. Horrible. I mean, it's not true, is it? No. Let's be fair about this. No. It's definitely true with Ricky.

18:10100 % true. Well, yeah. I'm not talking about Ricky. I'm talking about everyone else. Obviously, Ricky. That goes without saying. But everyone else... It's the same with fucking Ben Bowman. I was like, what are you doing there? I was just hanging out with Sanessi yeah fuck fuck off for who Coca-Cola event yeah what the fuck am I doing in what yeah I know where's my invite to Coca-Cola yeah I saw you had you had Kish on the lab next day he's getting he's like doing some work with BBC he's like doing I'm going to be there Kish yeah just on his on his TikTok today I just saw it and I thought where's my boy Flav getting this what's he's just what's going on I don't know why I started this.

18:53Yeah. Yeah. Shut it all down. And then murder Ben Bowman. Take ages. So big. Yeah, we'll take ages. Good. Just like the image, like you're just hitting him, you're just knocking, you're like, fuck, you know, I can't be bothered to kill you now. How long do you reckon it takes to kill Ben Bowman? It'll take ages. It's like climbing a mountain. It's like climbing a mountain, isn't it? It's like, you know it's going to take ages. Like, it'll be satisfying when it's done, but you're like it's an all day job yeah yeah and it'd be a lot of mess back a sandwich and I'll probably shit myself as I'm doing it because of the panic yeah I've killed a man out of rage out of rage and jealous rage and I've shit myself at the same time yeah and I can't call it a moment of madness because it's taken me all day I've had loads of time to reflect and I'm still trying to kill it at any time I could have stopped I'm going what am I doing stop trying to kill Ben Bowman I've had lunch halfway through I've had lunch I've sat down for lunch I've been watching YouTube videos of Ben and now I'm still killing him looking for different angles at how you might kill him yeah exactly there was a funny comment that said like he stood next to Sanessi and towered over him he's towering over a centre back that plays in the Premier League yeah it's beautiful Captain Danny says who's your favourite shit player to play for the club

20:21oh i didn't get that someone said stefan freund i didn't get all the stefan freund love i just thought he was crap wait for him to fucking leave i was useless i quite liked hulkby for the like the industry i was and i always felt like he was good but then lovely was he was crap uh ultimately and i had an amazing song about him but i can't remember what it was so what were you going to say John my other one was Jansen because I wanted him to be good so much but he was crap he was crap but I just had quite a soft spot for him Jose Dominguez he was small scored a goal but the little backflip he used to do as well I'm here for that always here for the for the acrobatics any more?

21:10just give me another one just so I find this Timothy Toomer. His name is Lewis Holby and he's number 14. I just can't get enough. I just can't get enough. He signed for Tottenham Hotspur from a team in Germany. I just can't get enough. I just can't get enough. He scores the goals and the years go wild and I just can't seem to get enough. I remember that now. Lewis Holby. That's a banger. It did actually go off with that. I remember. That is an absolute grade A banger. Wow, that was class. Yeah. Thanks for bringing that up and remembering. Stifter said... Before the season even kicks off, soccer fans are already making predictions.

22:33All right, Flav, does your dad still struggle with playing out from the back? and if so, how fucked are you watching Deservey Ball with him this season? And someone said, I spent a good 18 seconds thinking about what deviant sexual manoeuvre is playing out from the back and why would Flav's dad struggle with it? My dad would struggle with any sexual activity. He's like 75, decrepit. So, yeah, I mean, this is an important question because we know that that's what he likes to do, isn't it? How comfortable are you, boys? I think with Kinski I'm more comfortable if it was Vicario I'd be very uncomfortable if it was Vicario and Danso we're down but are you comfortable with it?

23:17you want to see it playing out? it's lovely seeing it against Hoffenheim when it works what is it John? what are you smiling at? no I'm I thought there was something coming no no no I'm very comfortable with it I think it's it's Kinski it's Sanessi it's Van Hecker all three of them are proper comfortable and then you know you just move a little bit further up the pitch it's Tonali, it's Fernandes guess what, they're super comfortable they're really comfortable on the ball you throw in the full backs, you've got Porra, you've got Robertson what are they? Comfortable on the ball so getting from the keeper through the thirds, through the lines I'm just feeling a lot better about it so yeah I think obviously the idea of it is to be a little bit stressful because you want it to feel like we're on the edge, like we're just about to lose it.

24:07That's what baits the press. So it will be, you know, we will shit our pants. That's fine because the upside is so much and it's going to be fucking brilliant when we just pop it off and absolutely rinse through the middle of teams. I cannot wait. I think the problem isn't going to be us having to deal with the press consistently. It's having to deal with teams that won't press, that will sit in a mid block or sit in a low block. And I was talking to Kish about this on the lab. I thought it was a really interesting conversation, actually. and I ask the questions what do you do? What if a team just won't play?

24:39What if they just invite the pressure on? And you're then in a situation that all teams are in in dealing with a low lot that we've seen under Pochettino we saw it under Redknapp we saw it loads of times where it just won't come out and we have to engineer it you have to try and pull them out of shape to create an opportunity and that's when people get frustrated you remember people going all we're doing is passing it around pass it around the back pass it around, you know, the edge of the box and you're like, just whip it in. You're like, but that is probably the lowest percentage chance of anything happening if you whip it in.

25:13So you have to find a way. And it comes down to individual quality. It comes down to players that are good at 1v1, are good in the, at the nine, holding up ball and stuff like that. So, um,

25:26yeah, I finished my point. So I'm going to say something. I just, I wasn't quite as in the know with Robertson of how good he is at swinging a ball in. Yeah. And I didn't know that about him. You can tell we've been doing this 15 years. It's just like, I've stopped speaking to someone and said something. It was just the desperation. I'm supposed to link things together. Yeah. It's like, I think you're saying it in your own brain. Like, you need to say it out loud. Like, what do you think, Rick? you've just gone just come on figure it out look at me i'm desperate i'm drowning yeah we're playing it out from the back though i i'm not a fan i i obviously understand why we do it um and previously we've had players that can't do it some can some can't we've been caught out in possession and you know when we're chasing games and we're still doing it and it's left me a bit like oh fucking hell man just get the ball forward but under the players that we've got now their technical ability uh and watching us throughout the um the summer with friendlies proper fully confident that that the boys will be able to do it and then when i i was watching something the other day i think i was just flicking through uh tiktok and there was a part where we were playing out from the back can't remember who we were playing against but it was forster as a goalkeeper and he got charged down twice and the team scored like one in quick succession.

26:56I can't remember if it was against and I was like, fucking hell, I remember that. That was fucking awful. Was it Liverpool? Yeah, it was. It was terrible. It was so bad. We were like, it's not his fault. He doesn't know how to do it. For us to throw it in the net. I think we ended up winning the game on that Son. He scored slightly from the corner. I think that was the game and Diallo, no, it was Man United. It happened against Man United. Right. Oh, yeah, it was. It was, yeah, it was United, yeah. I was just thinking, as you were talking there, Rick, and I often like to think about things like this, is that like what, if a Marmusha was to sign, one of the perks were that every Thursday you had to turn up.

27:39You had to turn up at his hotel.

27:46And the only request was,

27:52who wrote into his contract i think the reason thing it won't work because he's muslim he definitely isn't into this right you you would have to go in there and

28:04go into the bathroom and just put your hands on the sink you're completely naked but you know like how it can be sexy if you bend over you arch your back and your ass is in there yeah yeah yeah yeah seeing that I'm pulling that yeah you're not doing that you're arching it in the opposite direction oh okay so I've got I've got a hump just resting on the sink

28:30Thursday afternoon I like that you've prefaced that with you've prefaced that with it won't happen because he's Muslim so he's not into that like that's the only reason this isn't unrealistic aside from that if it wasn't his religious beliefs he'd be that is definitely a possibility I still think the funniest thing we've ever said in this pod is Igor Tudor turning down Ricky's advances by throwing him against the wall and he's completely naked and he just hits it like a baby would and slides down yeah it's just like left in a field position oh no froze winded can't breathe struggling for breath as he towers over me get away boy

29:15public says Flav if we get Savino and Mamouche in a double deal do you think you'll be able to handle both of them in the bathroom stall this time a few people have been asking me to tweet that but as I said I've lost work I can't do it anymore I've got responsibilities I just can't not for a laugh like that joke cost me about 800 quid last time that's quite expensive the most expensive joke I've ever and I've said some closer knuckle stuff yeah that was bad Seamus Lloyd he says has the psychology of the club the players the fans changed enough since Roberto De Zerbi joined to withstand a hypothetical mediocre first five games if we don't fly out the gates at the beginning of the season will the stadium players fans get nervous quickly or has De Zerbi era so far given us confidence to bat the team and players with a headwind hits and any headwind hits it's a good question what do you think boys go on Rick I think we have an understanding that there's a lot of players that have come in.

30:24Not only that we've had a big change in our squad first team, De Zerbe is also teaching them the way he wants to play football. And everyone's not going to get it straight away. People are going to be comfortable in training. And then when it's in a live environment during a match, there's more pressure, the crowd's going to be there. So I can fully envisage there will be some slip ups along the way, but it's important to know that what we've done now in the transfer market, getting to Zerbi, this is just the beginning. And as the season progressed, people are going to learn, going to learn what he wants.

31:00So I think people will be understanding of it. It's going to be tough because when we do eventually slip up or a result doesn't go away or whatever, there's going to be, you know the banter of you've spent x amount of million and you can't even beat fucking brentford or whatever it might be but it's important that we don't lose our shit and that we we that we fucking we will though yeah i know of course i'll be the first one in there yeah i was gonna say i agree with everything that ricky said except for the fact that we'll have we'll understand any of that we absolutely will not accept any of that even though all that's completely correct people will be fucked off but i hope they're like pissed off in the moment but after each game after the initial thing they can also see the bigger picture which i think is probably what will happen people will be upset because we've set the expectation high with the transfers especially again if we do end up getting some of these bigger attackers over the line rightly so the expectation is going to be really high but we all know we've all watched football that it does take time for these players to gel i can't remember who said it in the group i think it's a really like good way to think about it which is i think because we had the zerby at the end of last season and we've made all these great signings there's almost this sort of like unspoken expectation that we might do a bit of like an ang season where like we start really really well and then you know it gets a bit patchy and maybe we sort of you know land somewhere mid table or upper mid table but actually like it's more likely that it's kind of a tricky sticky start to begin with where we're like you know figuring things out and you know doing this new version of the zerby's like proper full season with these new sign-ins, and then it just clicks, and we just fly up the table and everything comes together.

32:41So if that is the case, I hope that we just have that bit of patience, like the bigger picture patience, to see through the short-term frustrations. Yeah, we won't. No, we won't. We won't be few minutes. No, we won't. Just don't racially abuse any of them. Abuse them, but no racial stuff, please. Yeah, yeah. It's too much. It's too much. And they get angry, down tools.

33:09I think the expectation if we sign Savio and we sign Mamouche, the expectation is through the roof. We talked about it before you came on, John. We're talking like maybe we could challenge for the top. We finished 17th. We shouldn't be thinking like that. Maybe we could challenge. Yeah, maybe. Yeah. What do you think? Yeah, a total challenge, yeah. Yeah, mental, right? Just let them learn. Let them understand what De Zerbi's asking of them. We've made great headway in signing six Premier League-proven players already. But give them time to learn. Understand that the squad is kind of half-baked.

33:54The Brentford game doesn't define anything. A reminder that it took a certain manager five years and a billion pounds worth of investment to win a league. It takes time. But can you identify a momentum in the right direction? If you can, if you feel like we're moving in the right direction, and generally it feels like that, then hold on to that and it'll be satisfying. And to quote a great man, we will lose games. But if the mentality is correct, we might lose games, but we know we're pushing in the right direction. And that was almost all of Pochettino's career at Spurs. At the time of Clubs, it feels like, despite things that what might happen losing certain games we are moving in the right direction and that's what we've got to hold on to that's the most important thing because the 17th place is a reality sorry 17th place was our reality and if we finish eighth playing a really sexy brand of football that's progress what do we do the season after continue to supplement the team support the zerbi and build a club around this mad little italian I don't think you can say mad little Italian.

35:04I think it's like, but then Mussolini. I think maybe making the Mussolini comparisons the bit. No, no, no. I'm saying I don't think you, I think anything's fine with Italians because of Mussolini. Oh, right. I see what you're saying. Yeah, absolutely. Also, is he little? Yes. Is he Italian? Yes. Is he mad? That's the bit, right? So it's more, you know, mental health awareness type vibes than just straight up xenophobia. You haven't, you know. Yeah, no, and I'm not a xenophobic, but I think we all are a little bit. Oh, yeah, yeah, 100%. And I just think payback for Mussolini. Yeah. Shouldn't have done that.

35:43Shouldn't have done that. Weak leader. Weak leader. Shouldn't have done that. You shouldn't have done that. It was really bad. It's bad what you did. You sided with the Nazis. bad choice wrong side of history yeah but you know just as a little bit of payback it might make you feel better my granddad ended up getting based in Italy and then was doing bombing runs into the north so and then ended up living there retired there think about that my granddad was there he was in Egypt got malaria went to Italy boom there you go do you know it's a massive challenge the biggest problem we had as we were manoeuvring from North Africa into southern Italy to deal with Mussolini and his fascists the terrain was a problem because they just entrenched themselves in the mountainous southern Italy and it was tough for us to get around we were having issues at the time because the American leaders and the British generals weren't getting on there was an ego like a lot of dick swinging

36:54figured it out though figured out why the law and now we're free to talk about this like it's normal perfect perfect perfect what do we what next question next question embarrassed guys is after Flav took after Flav Cold took over as host of the BBC 5 Live Football Daily this week if you could brutally evict one person out of their role in radio TV or film and take over what role are you stealing? I didn't think I did that. I thought I just sat and waited for my turn to speak. It sounded like it was a positive. Yeah, it sounded like it was a positive. Yeah, I thought it was more of a compliment.

37:35Thank you, mate. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I can't answer that question because I'm going to be working, potentially, almost certainly going to be working with who my answer would be next Thursday. That's exciting. So you'll find out that answer if you follow me on Instagram, it's Flav underscore Bateman because there'll be clips of the person though I would easily take over. Oh. But we'll say no more. Okay. We'll say no more. That was a really good pod, actually. They did a good job, Five Live, for previewing the Spurs season. Chris Elton and Andrew Townsend. So that was good. What was weird at that moment during the pod, you've got the producers in your ears at the same time as your...

38:17It's radio, right? Yeah. So they go, right, Chris Hewitt's going to stop. can you come up with a question for Chris Oton when he stops talking and they'll give you like 30 seconds so you've got to think of something to say and then he said right Andros can ask questions Chris Oton and then you can then ask Andros about Romero because that's what we'd agreed to do Andros asked me a question so I was like thrown I wasn't expecting Andros Townsend to give a fuck about me so I was really thrown on national radio When they're doing the questions and stuff, are they speaking to all of you as a whole?

38:57No, you can only hear your own. You can only hear. No, no, no. So would Andros have heard them say, Flav, ask Andros this, but he's just reversed it. No, no, no. He wouldn't have heard it. He wouldn't have heard anything. I think he just made a mistake. He was meant to ask. Right. Okay. Right. But they told him to ask me a question. Yeah. Which is obviously ridiculous. Yeah. Too busy shoving eggs up his ass probably. match of the day host of match of the day it's a pretty good gig isn't it once a week you'll never be out of work you know like if you're doing that you could do that for 30 years I'm happy I'm happy with this good salary it's alright isn't it nah alright I'll I'll replace Flav then if you're thinking it's so bloody good I'll take that this is good isn't it this is good yeah this is good I've not watched match of the day in years yeah I suppose I'm on one for years though have they?

39:48Well, two seasons. Lineker's not on there anymore. That's it. I've stopped now. Yeah, it's not the same since Des Lynam left it, mate. Crap. Who's going to be player of the season? Leffy, 186.

40:03That's an interesting one. Have a think about it while I do this. If you're heading away this summer, here's something genuinely useful instead of getting stung by roaming charges or messing around with trying to find a local SIM card. Well, you're still going on in your, go on. You say something about Sally. Well, I've made, How many examples have I come up with, say, Lee? Loads. Would you ever use Saley to call prostitutes? No. I don't need to.

41:27Do it on the landline in front of the kids.

41:34Can I have 30 minutes? I won't need an hour. Yeah, no, 30 minutes. Yeah, I'll be in and out. Can anybody need to know about me? Five foot six, Anglo-Indian. just looking for a good time yeah i just want to get through can you refer to yourself as eagle um it'd be great if you can just when you get it just immediately throw me at the wall that'd be i'll be naked so you know it's me just walk in pick me up throw me that would be fine and for the whole night you're eagle to 30 minutes be eagle toodle for 30 minutes um yeah good good uh so the link is in the description below to support the fighting cock say these great app great people over at nord and um yeah you're helping the podcast so you're legends thank you so much for doing that uh yeah player of the season boys right i'm going man like tonali i just think it's like he will he will he will more obviously like set the tone for this like improved version of what we're doing and i think it'll be one of those ones where it was just easy to identify how much better he is and the level that he increases so i think it'll be tonali and i do think he'll have like a massive influence on what we're doing.

42:47So I'll go for him. If I can pre-empt you, is it Fernandes or Van Hecker for you? It's one of them two. I know it is. Who do you think it is then? I'm going to say Van Hecker from you. No. So same for me. Yeah, Fernandes. Mine's purely because we know what Van Hecker can do. Senesi as well. uh we you know the we've we've all seen the stats and everything but with fernandez and there's a lot of this oh he went down with west ham and he went down with southampton you've paid a lot of money and all of this stuff and i just think that will be in people's mind he's a young lad as well a lot of responsibility come in for a huge price and i just feel like that um people won't be expecting to see how much he affects games and the performances that he puts in and that's what will kind of everyone be we'll sit back and sit up and be like fuck i don't understand what people go you paid 85 million for tally for for um for fernandez yeah what's it gonna do with you what's it gonna do if i buy myself a jacket you're not coming to when i'm looking fucking cool as fuck i'm on those stony yeah aqua scootum something like that yeah i go into the boozer And you go, nice jacket.

44:11Oh, you paid a lot for that, did you? No. I just looked the bollocks. That's it. Don't worry about how much I paid for it, you swat. Yeah, there is that. Yeah, there is that, isn't there? Yeah. Because he didn't go in there. He wasn't in Portugal's World Cup squad. So I think there's this. I think people are underestimating him. Do you know Amarim let him go from sporting? And there was a, and I read up on this, obviously, there was a bewilderment that they allowed him to go to Southampton. Southampton paid I think like 40 million pound for him when he was in in the Premier League right or was that West Ham that paid Southampton 40 million I'm not sure but they they paid the money someone did before we spent all the money on him but yeah there was like while he's not in a what is probably a generational midfield in Portugal like unreal like there's not like as good as Fernandes is it's not surprising he's not starting for Portugal he will be by the end of the fucking season boy So half it's in PSG, that's why.

45:12Yeah, there was bewilderment that he was allowed to be let go. And I just think we've got a special player. Who's going to be your player this season? I'm with Fernandes. Okay. Yeah. Just to be clear, I think he'll have a great season. But I think it'll be one of them where it's like, not necessarily under the radar, but it's just less obvious. I think he'll be like subtly just absolutely amazing. but I think yeah it'll be if those two have good seasons if those two are the two in conversation we will have had a good season I think because that was a real big difference between like a lot of our issues last year and a lot of what we're hoping for improvement this year I think those two are the key for us really yeah such a strange question Blue Ghosts says if you'd fuck a mum from one of the three main whinge bags from the other 14, which would you choose?

46:10A Brummie old one for Villa, Geordie accent for Newcastle, or East Midlands for Forest? What the fuck does that even mean? I don't know. Just choose one. If you have to fuck a Geordie mum, a Forest mum, or a Villa mum. Let's go with Geordie. Yeah, I would have said Geordie. I don't know why. It's just because I feel like the girls up there look after themselves like that, but they're sort of pampering themselves and it probably carries on into I don't want to say too much if I speak I'm not sure they look after themselves no I don't mean I just mean as in you know when they go out there's a big thing isn't it about Newcastle girls Geordie girls getting doled up for a night out right that's what I meant and so when they get older I just imagine there's probably a few more MILFs floating about that's all I'm saying I can almost hear what Flab's saying in his mind here yeah I like an old lady with loads of makeup on I think so yeah but then an old lady from me is like old now this is it yeah yeah uh i i there's a tap in there from a mum joke for you the neither you said i i knew it i've avoided it i came into this pod pretty heavy and i thought right i'll i'll let it slide a brummy old one from villa no one said my mum i was listening to a pod while i was in spain and used used that were like right The mum stuff has got to stop, right?

47:35It has stopped. It's got to stop. We can't be doing this anymore. Someone said one sentence about Tottenham. Within a second coming back, there's a mum joke. I was like, is it stopped? No, no. No, it's like a slow, gradual moment to improvement, isn't it? Right. There's a quote. Yeah, there hasn't been any one mum joke in this. So I think everyone's got the memo. What, today? That's not been a mum joke from the audience, is it? No, I came in, like I said, heavy, both barrels. But in a way, don't you think it's sort of water it down if it's both of your mums? Like if I'm picking on one mum over the other, that seems like more like harsh.

48:16But if it's just like generic, you're mum. Right, yeah, okay. Do you know what I mean? Yeah, yeah, yeah. I lose the banter a little bit. Yeah, yeah, yeah. By next week, it'll be no one's mum. Do you know what I mean? Right. When you used to go on holiday, John? Yeah. Like Spain or something. Did you ever go abroad on holiday when you were a kid with your parents? So as I said, my granddad ended up retiring in Italy. So we'd go and stay with them. So we were lucky we'd go to Italy on holiday and stay. Would your mum? He'll be back. Oh, he's here, he is. Oh, is that something happened? Don't worry.

48:49Was your mum ever topless? Not to my memory. not to my memory no because I remember women of a certain vintage back then the amount of you don't really see it anymore but the veins in their boobs massive wangers but like really blue veins all going through their boobs yeah you don't see that anymore no the good old times they were the good days yeah they were the good days what's happened the world's gone mad since that stopped happening all the things that's happened that's what I need to know the answer to yeah I'll blame it on Covid since Covid I haven't seen a single veiny brain rest. It's not more, it's just they, you know, everyone takes care of themselves these days, doesn't they?

49:33Exactly, especially in the Geordies, yeah. Yeah. Legal Pumpkin, actually, there's time for this.

49:47John, you won't know about this. I can't hear anything. No, no, can I. Oh, okay. Is it like music, I'm guessing? Is it a quiz? Yeah, it is quiz music, isn't it? it's got a bit in it you can hear that no I can't hear anything mate nah oh no I think it's broken oh tragic why don't you do the quiz noise yourself I can't do that and speak oh mate we've got no we've got no quiz noise actually look if there's no quiz noise then there's no podcast yeah I mean there's no quiz oh fucking hell so I might hold off the Marmush career quiz till he signs yeah till he signs you can't hear this nah nah Imagine we were just lying.

50:28Imagine we were like, yeah, we can hear it. Me and Rick had managed to communicate via our eyes just to pretend we can't hear it. Oh, is that the wind? Remember when you used to ignore your mates at school? You pretend they weren't there. Oh, what's that? Is that the wind? Classic. Flav does that before we start pods sometimes. I'm like, I start talking and he's like, I can't hear you. And he's watching me unplug my mic and plug it back in. And he's like, yeah, I could hear you first of all. It's good. Yeah, it's good. A lot of time for that. Oh, that's classic. Kilkenny Castle, he says, boys, thanks for keeping the summer fun.

51:05I quite like this idea of the fighting cop boxing matches. This is not the first conversation I've had today about this. Cow versus Big John. Oh. Alex versus Mark. I genuinely don't know I'd win out of that. It'd be tragic. What? Alex from Bristol V. Nisbo? Yeah. Fucking hell. I think it'd be a whitewash in there. Yeah. I mean, Mark. Yeah. Mark wins. Yeah, Mark's clear win. Yeah, easy. Viking blood, isn't it? Yeah. I don't understand why the Viking empire is sort of celebrated in the British Empire. John, don't have to get involved in this. But the British Empire is not celebrated. In fact, it's much maligned as a terrible thing, as a bit of a stain on the history.

51:58The Viking Empire, however, make films about it. Great films where the Vikings win. Do you know what they did? They raped their way through Great Britain. Okay, so let's not stop making the Vikings, right, if you're not going to make the Brits. Yeah, the Brits. We want equal footing with other empires. Everyone's like, oh, the Romans are Romans. Yeah, all right, they did loads of stuff, but they did loads of bad stuff as well, so we just want to be on a par. it's like the mong who's the mongolian leader genghis khan mate he's fuck do you know basically we're all related to him yeah because he raped so many women yeah it's mental no one's like oh let's make films about him yeah pretty shampo they're like nah no you can't have that you can't you can't make a film about that no what spreading penicillin around the world no what's that inventing the internet oh no let's not make a film about that that's good telephone calls do you oh do Do you like common law?

52:54Do you like telephone? Oh, fucking hell. Do you like democracy? Do you like radar? Do you? No, actually, let's make a film about this man who raped so many women that we are all related to him. He's made the whole world incestuous because he's done so much raping. That's fine, but just, yeah. Okay, fine. I'm not allowed to mention the war on every podcast. Fuck's sake. You're not, though, because you just don't help. It doesn't help when you do it. It helps when I do it because I'm not like subtle with it. Yours is like, no, Royal Britannia and all that. Yeah. You're not ready to hear it, mate.

53:27It's lucky they can't see my Margaret Thatcher tattoos, otherwise it would be all kicking off. It wouldn't surprise me. Notino says, at the end of last season, Peter Tarrinson came out saying that their actions will speak louder than their words when it comes to making a team challenge for titles. Have they done enough this summer to back up those platitudes? Great question.

53:51The two statements came out. It was the Lewis children, Enoch, and it was Peter Charent, who's non-exec chairman. Have they done enough to back up the words that they said in the summer after the end of the season? Ricky, do you feel like they've done a good job? Do you forgive them? I wouldn't say forgive, but have they backed up their words? I believe they have. Are they showing ambition? I believe they are. And it's not just with the transfer. it was that Roberto De Zerbe as well, that that was the guy that they wanted. They went after him. He said he didn't want to come in like towards the tail end of the season.

54:32They went for him again. And then they got him, made him promises that when he come in, that we will spend and we'll get Tottenham back to the top of the table. And we broke our transfer record twice in a week or something like that. we're going for players that does Herbie wants and it doesn't feel like we are looking at players and we're like, that's a bit ambitious. That's too expensive. We've got this player down here who plays for Northampton who's equally as good. Go for him instead. So yeah, it does feel like they've backed up their words. year so i'm like a little bit conflicted on this because i think uh they have to a certain extent but i don't want to give them full credit just yet because i think basically there was a very clear view of like what we needed to do we were in a very extreme situation and therefore that like takes extreme measures the the points rick makes around like the um you know breaking our transfer record like all that stuff is true but our net spend isn't particularly high at all 80 million pound just above hull right so we've been spending about 80 million quid for the last 10 years probably a bit more unfortunately yeah exactly so there is like room to go now look i don't um someone accused me of being pre-annoyed which is my own catchphrase the reason i'm annoyed that we haven't signed the strikers to this point is because it will now impact our first game of season and so there's always a cost to waiting till the end of a window versus like getting players in before the the first game starts so it might be that we get Savino we get Mamouche and we get Gakpo in which case they have 100 % like achieved what they said they would and they've definitely stuck to their word if we don't get any of them then they haven't right because that isn't serious you can't go into a season with the front line that we currently have you know it's a little bit like so like my parents were divorced so when i was a kid birthdays right i'd get present from my mom present from like my mom's side of the family and then i'd go to my dad and i get my dad's side and then like you know my dad's grandpa typically uh my dad's side but not there's not much in it and neither was great yeah he was great but look what i was gonna say is it's like right early in the morning first present you're like oh brand new pro night train is brilliant that's exactly what i wanted that's exactly great what's that you've got me a playstation game fucking excellent can't wait do you need a playstation though have you got me a playstation no we've got you a box of shit oh all right there's nothing in that it's just so you know the beginning of the day people if you rang me and you're gone how's your birthday going i've gone fucking excellent right when i get to box three and you ring me how's your birthday it sounds ungrateful to go it's not gone as i expected actually flav i'm a bit i've just opened my third present it's a box of shit you're gonna go right okay human shit it's just my dad's shit in a box and he hasn't he hasn't he told me this was going to be the best birthday ever it looked like it was gonna be just do nothing but yeah he could have because that's what he's been doing for the last 10 years but this year he said it was going to be different right and now i've just got like two really good presents and a box of shit and that's basically where we're at we've got a great defense at a great midfield and currently a box of shit.

58:05If they end up buying us the PlayStation, i.e. Savinho, Mamouche and A and other, then we have had the best birthday ever. So, not yet is the answer to that question. All right. Give me the answer to this question from WDE2000. Ask Ricky if Mamouche was one inch in his mouth. Oh, for good sake. Ask Ricky if Mamouche was one inch in his mouth and Gekpo was one inch in his ass. and he was one inch in Savino. Which way is he moving? Coise, Daniel? Straight away, I'll just start performing the worm. So both in like that. All the way to the base. All the way to the base of both of them.

58:50I thought he was going to do a cartwheel. I think we will wrap up on this because we're on 57 minutes. This is a relatively dull question, but perhaps people might like the answer to these. Skillsmeister Dan, he says, I'm a relatively new listener and have been listening to a lot of old episodes and I have a few questions about the pod's history. Sorry if they're incredibly dull. I mean, after all the shit you've just heard in this podcast and Ricky being one inch in my motion, I think a bit of dull is fine. Why was Wendy's Youth Update segment discontinued? How far back have you gone? What are you possibly gaining from listening to that?

59:37Not Wendy's Youth Update, but our podcast back then. Discontinued. Did he just want to focus on the extra inch? Yes. Yeah. He just thought, fuck the fighting cock. We're doing the extra inch now. Those guys are pricks. um and then uh so second question is uh no i just they've done the extra inch it just seemed weird i don't know i can't remember the reason actually man it was such a long time ago ask windy send him this uh do you know why the custom thumbnails don't show up on apple podcast but doing spotify this is dull no i don't know the answer stop using apple get spotify yeah all right and this is probably the dullest question I've ever asked on this podcast, Skills Meister Dan.

1:00:21But you have your answers now. Why did the old episodes always start and end with two or three sports social podcast network on repeat? I don't know. I don't know. I know that that was a thing, but it was never a top of my priority to figure out why that happened. So there you go. Please send in more questions next, Dan. before we go is that mean did that come across as mean no no no no but i do hope that it's like oh hi so yeah i've got a mac and um i've tried to just like like update the brightness can you just like tell me how to do it i hope this becomes like a help desk now for like the more like niche elements of technology i really enjoy that are you boys uh looking forward to the season yes i can't wait now mate i've been so like i feel like i'm edging myself with pre-season like me and flub were talking about it uh earlier this week on my pod about i don't really like pre-season because it's not real it's just like training games and it's like frustrating it'd be like only ever able to watch like the under 21s or whatever.

1:01:38I want to watch the real thing and the real games. So now it's like upon us, mate. I'm buzzing for it. I can't wait. I kind of want to be in this bit for the rest of my life. I've never been more excited. Okay. Is that not a good place to be? Yeah. It's a great place to be. If I'm excited, I'm so excited for the new season. Let's just stay here. Yeah. Not to start the season. Just this bit here. Just the idea that we're just signing the players and everything stops. Nothing bad has happened. Everything's on the table. Like, at this moment in time, we could win it. We could. We could win it. Mate, that is a reality.

1:02:20And the thing is, though, John, it's not crazy what we're saying here. Of course we could. Look what we've done in the summer transfer window. Look at who our manager is. Look at what we will buy again in January when we need to. Look at who is operating like a proper fucking football club for the first time in two decades. That ain't aiming just to get lucky with some kid from Milton Key, MK Duns. No, I'm just saying, we got lucky with Dele Alli. We didn't realise he'd be as good as he is. We're not fucking about anymore. So yeah, I'm excited. Everyone's worried. Everyone's worried. That's how you know that Spurs are back.

1:03:05Hear them, John. Mate, everyone's worried. Oh my God, what are they doing? What, are they going to buy something new? And, Marmush, what is happening to football? It's none of your business. Yeah, it's none of your business. Don't worry. You should have relegated us. You didn't. And now you're going to fucking pay for it. No, you're going to pay for it. Listen to this. Any of you fucking cunts. I know a couple of you cunts who are not Spurs fans. And you're Liverpool fans. There are some fans that listen to this. I know. And I get it. You like the podcast. it's not really about football you like it you fucking conch should have relegated us we're going to make your lives fucking hell we're going to make your lives if we somehow do this we're going to be awful we'll be the most hated club in the world and we're going to love every fucking way of it right nice one thank you for downloading the fighting god podcast John Boy Ricky you're a legend a pair of you and yeah Win Lee.

1:05:04Hey, it's Ryan Reynolds here from Mint Mobile. Now, I was looking for fun ways to tell you that Mint's offer of unlimited premium wireless for$15 a month is back. So I thought it would be fun if we made$15 bills, but it turns out that's very illegal. So there goes my big idea for the commercial. Give it a try at mintmobile.com slash switch. Upfront payment of$45 for three months, $90 for six months, or$180 for 12-month plan required. $15 per month equivalent. Taxes and fees extra. Initial plan term only greater than 50 gigabytes may slow when network is busy. See terms.

Flav, Ricky and Big Jon react to the possibility of Tottenham signing Omar Marmoush and Savinho, ask just how high expectations should be after an extraordinary summer, and wonder whether a title challenge is genuinely as ridiculous as it sounds.

There’s also talk about De Zerbi-ball, playing out from the back, who could be Spurs’ player of the season, whether ENIC have finally backed up their words with actions, plus your questions and the usual absolute nonsense.
