In short

Tottenham’s start to De Zerbi’s era is debated after a goalless run (3 games) and a 0-0/low-output stretch, with focus on tactics, squad management, and VAR/handball controversy involving Nico Williams. The hosts also praise Paul Bentancur’s “renaissance,” discuss Conor Gallagher vs João Fernandes on the bench, and assess new signings/loans (notably Mikhailo Mudryk).

Guest backgrounds

No guests appear in the transcript; it’s a multi-host discussion (Alex, Mark, and others) plus patron questions.

Key claims

Bentancur has been quietly Tottenham’s best player, bridging defense-to-attack and improving team balance. De Zerbi’s clear instructions and minute-management are necessary after injury history. Gallagher started and performed well physically, but Fernandes might fit better for creativity/role needs. The Nico Williams handball was correctly ruled out (hit his hand), and Forest fans’ reactions are criticized.

Notable examples

Bentancur’s controlled performance vs Forest; Savio’s and Destiny’s moments; Mudryk loan being “hope” with a steep £75m option; a BBC VAR angle showing hands involved.

It's the fighting. Cock! A camel turner! um alex just shown up with one of the worst things i've ever seen as a middle-aged man he's he's wearing what looks to be like a friendship basic like how pathetic can you be well you've gone straight in with the middle age and you're older than me yeah but you're going to be 40 you soon yeah but that's not middle age is it we're all that's all the same we're all sort of hurtling towards yeah well you keep saying about this whole on a rock hurtling thing but i've noticed that you only seem to say that since since tottenham aren't very good when we were good it was all embrace your life, go for your dreams and now because I've got a friendship bracelet which me and my daughter matched from a charity thing and cost a coffee you've got a problem with it it looks like a nine year old made it she didn't make it, we bought it right she's nine?

49yes, correct she's nine? yeah, well done get in there! brilliant as the godfather of your child i have outdone myself there i was gonna say you're supposed to know that it's like the minimum yeah but i've only recently become the godfather but before it was ricky and ricky let alex downs and now it's me well yeah but we've we've we've we've made friends again now me and rick we've stopped breaking friends we've made friends so i'm not the godfather anymore no you're you're not reliable i would take care of her if something happens when something very soon happens to you uh i will definitely take care of her yeah but Yeah, but yeah.

25She'll come live with me. Huh? She'll come live with me. She'll call me Papa Flav. Papa Flav. Yeah. She does have a mum as well. Right. She does, yeah. Mark, you've got a cold, haven't you? Like a little girl. I have. Yeah, it's pathetic. It is pathetic. I do like that top though. What is it? Some sort of... This is a gilet in a teddy material with a cow prick. Callum loves it. Everyone else took the piss out of me. I wore it to the stadium once that was a mistake I loved it I loved it I loved it thank you tons to talk about and tons to squeeze into the next hour or so we've got shit loads of questions from our patrons it's patreon.com forward slash fighting cock if you want to be a part of that and listen to more of this sort of stuff and so obviously there's so many things to talk about I think categorically just waiting for Alex to return I think can we Al put your headphones on.

24Huh? Oh, your headphones. All right. Don't give a shit. That's right. I forgot you don't give a shit about anything. So yeah, no, let's just clear up this fucking Nico Williams bollocks for once and all, once and for all. Okay. There is nothing to clear up. No. No, you're not allowed. I don't know if there's any Forest fans listening to this for some sort of weird reason. We do have fans from pretty much every Premier League club that listen to the fighting cult religiously who don't support Spurs, which I always find I think that's probably the greatest compliment we can be given. Because some people have to listen because there are Liverpool fans right now.

03I think it's because our best content is when we're not talking about Tottenham. But everybody listen to this. There is a Forest fan listening to this. You cannot, under no circumstances, use your hands if you're not a goalkeeper. Certainly not if you're scoring a goal with them. It doesn't matter if you're an inch away from the goal line or you're 18 yards out or you punch the ball in from a corner. It's exactly the same. You're not allowed to do it. Imagine that. It's like a welly. Just smash it with your face into the top right corner. Bouch and then celebrate. There's a little extra area. No, you can't.

45You can't score with your hands. Like it's problematic. You just can't do it. If you start letting people score in your hands it will be a free fall i don't understand like i was listening to there's a couple of there's a forest fan on talk sport i won't name him no doubt i'll pass across at some stage but i was driving back from the game and he was hosting with someone and the way he was talking about it is this that this was the greatest robbery on earth glasner was at the same and the the thing they kept going was it wasn't clear and obvious it was clear and obvious The ball hit his hand before going into the goal.

21That's what the AR is for. I can tell them exactly why it was disallowed. Handball. Go on. Handball. Yeah, handball. He used his hands. Do you know when you have your kid, right? And you've got dreams of them being Premier League footballers, boys or girls, whatever it might be, right? And what the kids do, the first thing they do, the first thing they do when the ball is at their feet, they pick it up with their hands and you tell them from that age you've got to kick it you're not allowed to pick it up with your hands and they keep picking it up because they're morons but eventually and perhaps Forest fans never got past that sort of embryonic stage of being a human being you pick it up it's not allowed it's a foul it's against the rules so why is it that Nico Williams knows it's hit his hands he knows it's hit his hands gone I didn't I can say categorically that I did not touch that with my hands.

19What, is that what you said? Yeah. It's just lies. After the game. I blame Nico Williams' dad. Yeah. I think it's a lapse in his upbringing. I've stopped taking my boy to football practice because he just doesn't fucking know. I swear he's on some other planet. He just runs around, picks the ball up all the time. And Nico Williams' dad should have done that. He should have just gone, Nico Williams clearly is not good enough to be on this football pitch now. So you're saying about taking your boy to, like you take him to football training, he keeps picking it up and then you put him in the car and you go, what are you fucking doing?

54All the kids are like, you know, kids younger than him as well. Like they're doing drills and they're like running in between cones and like shooting. This little R word is literally take, like picking the ball up and just running like a maniac circles around the sports hall. That would drive me fucking nuts. Like a lunatic. I just can't do it anymore I'm like you're just not doing football anymore that's it there's a martial arts centre across the world I'll stick him in there forget about him for an hour each week yeah but he'll probably start knitting that's he's mate this guy has some serious like he's got like strong strong robbery energy like he's gonna go out robbing some people soon it looks like what you're wearing now looks like he's knitted it to be honest what is that what is that when you weren't there I told you Flapper.

43It looks like, for anyone who can't see this, but it's like a, it's like a cardigan that, you know when you, you know when you're doing toasted marshmallows and you just get the edge of it and it just goes that little bit of like light brown around the edge. It looks like that. I like it. And I've got to say, Mark's dress sense is impeccable. I've said this before. It is. He's a well-dressed man. Thank you. I won't say much, you know, my favourite thing is making fun of Mark. But in this instance, I won't. Do you know what I've started doing now? Before each podcast, I'm like, what's the news happening in Denmark?

14What are the Denmark news? Anything funny? Because he might ask about stupid stuff. No, on the preview, not in the main pod. Nothing funny happens in Denmark. He fundamentally said, it didn't touch my hands. Yeah, he said... Well, that's a lie. I'll get you the... Stop lying. So not only is he... Gaslighting us. Yeah. But also, is this what you want to be known for? Being a liar? because the world can see it. There's been an action, the BBC,

49the BBC, it came out with a new angle, which blind, where you see him and it looks even worse, this angle, and I appreciate VAR didn't have this one. I don't know why they don't have this and the BBC does when it's, that's their job. But we both, he punches it with both hands. I mean, it was, I'll be honest, at the time I was like, whew, got away with that one. Yeah, same. Because obviously, like hands up, protect your face and stuff. But it doesn't matter. It's hit your hand and gone in. And if he's not careful, we won't come back for him in January. So you better watch him out. He's naughty boy.

23Do you know what? I hope I didn't make that quote up. I'm sure people have seen it. I can't find it. I thought it was on Reddit and it's not here. I might have just made it up in my excitement. So you've told me that Nico Warren has fundamentally said, I can absolutely promise you that I did not touch that with my hand. Now you can't even promise me that the quote was real. after I've done and said that. Yeah, I will try and find it. Can we also start with an appreciation of Rodri Bantingor? Because I think, and I'll get your thoughts on this first, Mark, I think we all abandoned him a little bit.

03And it's within our rights as football fans to give up on a player that had a really bad injury, not showing the support he needs, and perhaps, you know, just sort of move on from him. That's what we do, right? He's getting paid well. We move on if they're not good enough. Since the Serb has come in, I think quietly been our best player. And his performance against Forest, and I spoke to Cal after the game on our Patreon instant reaction, it went under the radar, but it was also beautifully controlled. It wasn't the highlight reel of when Savio picked up the ball from a chop from Gallagher and played it through Murillo's legs like he wasn't even there.

45It was something else. It was what the team needs to play well. And I just, I think he deserves his props. Yeah, completely. I mean, we spoke about it in the group as well, like during and after the game, how good he was just in that game, but also just this season so far. And I think it is, you know, if you're a bit of an naysayer, you'd go, oh, we spent nearly 400 million, but Benton Kuhl is still, you know, but you're missing the point, obviously. I think he's still going to have a massive role to play for us. And like if you, what I like about him as well is all the stuff he does, not just out of possession where he works incredibly hard defensively, but he's such a good teammate to the other players on that pitch.

33Like if you're lucky enough to go to games, you'll see him speaking to everyone around him, like constantly like holding arms around shoulders and that's so important, especially in a team like ours at the moment where we are struggling. It's still trying to find our feet a little bit and so on. Obviously, it should be in a much better position. I believe we are in a much better position last year. But yeah, he's going to be massively important for us. If nothing else, to kind of bridge this gap going into this new look Tottenham side because he has got a ton of qualities there. I mean there was you know under previous managers there have been times where he's been one of the outstanding performers in the team so Conte before you before you had his ACL yeah you're right you know he can score goals as well like so whereas we must have used him as a bit more of a defensive midfielder this season so far like he is a very very very good player and I think we do forget that to your point where everything has been so negative and you know there's been a lot of negativity around the team and the manager and all that kind of stuff.

36Of course, he's been tied with that brush and that sort of double pivot of doom that he was part of as well. So, yeah. But look, I'm really, really happy for it. I'm really happy for him. I'm, you know, obviously buzzing that he's getting his flowers because he deserves them. Is there a world where Bentancourt starts every game this season in the Premier League for Deserby? because in our eye, I think we all want to see a Tanale Fernandes sort of double pivot, sort of midfield. But perhaps that isn't the reality. Perhaps Bentancourt is our number one guy in that position, certainly in the six.

17I think he's, I think I said in the group, I think it's just a question of, it was a serious injury. And unfortunately, we've had a few more of those injuries since then. And time will tell. Howard Javi comes back, howard Abair comes back, Madison you know that that's a serious injury to come back from and it's taken him a long time to get up to to a level I mean when we when he got injured you know we were all devastated because that was that was a monumental loss at the time and I just think he's getting back closer and closer to those levels maybe not I'd like to see him do a few more of those kind of marauding runs and he was one of the best pressers as well particularly in that kind of panel third it might be a question the way he ends up a little bit further forward um with fernandez and tonali to try and you know or you can rotate it to try and benefit from those skills that he has he might not be able to do all of them together now um but at times it might be where you need a where you need a stronger press i don't know i think you know to be able to rotate between the three of them i think is a good option you know and just because we've spent you know the money that we have on tonali and fernandez you know let's let's have it right tonali's been relatively poor so far It was fine.

26It was absolutely fine against Forrest. I won't have that. Yeah, fine. Yeah, he was fine. Yeah, yeah, I'm fine. If you had the Brentford game and parts of the Newcastle game, then you could say, yeah, what you just said was fair. Sorry, I reacted. Sorry. Yeah, I just put, again, you know, it's, we all want our£100 million signing to be fantastic and not be getting any stick whatsoever. But it also doesn't mean that we can't, you know, call it out when it's not great. And it hasn't been, you know, those moments still gave the ball away a lot on Saturday. you know but time will time will come you know it's some people just take longer to settle into newer situations it's the same all the time um but uh the the phrase is time will tell not time will come alex um these are the the these are the him him wow i've i've i've sat i've sat here for a decade listening to call listening listening to him call postacoglu pochettino uh butcher every name and then he wants to i'm saying the time will come for tonali to to get to his level and he's not even listened to me making that point and incorrectly thought that i meant the phrase time will tell and he's just gone and said it out loud yeah um i look i just want you to be the best version of you you don't what what you were getting annoyed about and itchy in then is that i wasn't 100 positive about 100 million pounds signing when you thought he was all right against i apologize for that i apologize for that very quickly which shows you the fabric of me um this is nico williams uh quotes direct quotes from sky sports it's a goal far is there for when there's a clear and obvious error and for me that's not clear and obvious i headed it in between my arms if you pause it it looks like it's going to hit my arm but it didn't it hit my arm wow it's the don't believe you don't believe you um yeah so uh fuck nico williams uh which is fine i mean look what i've found out what i've realized is if you want to know what happened on a football pitch in the premier league the last people you need to speak to is the fans of either side yeah but what is stupid is because i even i i did another podcast with um hltco and we were talking about this morning and i was like when in real term in real time when it went in no one had when we were disappointed that we'd conceded but we didn't have an issue of it it looked like a legitimate goal it's not it was fine like i was like fuck we need to come back that was my feeling i didn't notice anything at the time but what my position now is fuck forest because of how their fans have reacted that's what i that's where i'm at i'm like i'm with you in a way but because you're being wankers about it now i'm against you i mean your reaction to oh we've got to come back now that's a better reaction to what i had i i genuinely got a bit teary no no no i i think I wasn't nearly as measured as that.

38I was just focused on the point. I was like, I wonder if I don't even need to put my shoes on. I'm going to run out the front and there's a main road out there and just see what happens. Yeah. Yeah. I started just looking at the bedroom window. Just looking at it. How much force would it take to try to do that? I was... Yeah, I was upset. I was upset. Yeah. Was you upset? Was you in any way encouraged? Did you feel like we're moving in the right direction now? I felt like that after Newcastle, which is bizarre after a 2-0 defeat, but I wasn't particularly moved either way by Saturday, to be honest.

24I wasn't like, oh, that's another step on from Newcastle. We had 12 shots, not one of them at the target. No, but we had an XG of 1.86. I don't, you know my thoughts on that. Yeah, but you cannot ignore it. I can't. There's loads of people that ignore it. Roy Keane ignores it. It's fine, right? It's nonsense. It's not nonsense. No, no, no. Let me come in. Now, with what we're looking at now, more than ever is now the time to trust your eyes of what you're seeing. Not data, not now. Not now. Not when you've got this many people coming in and this much change of style and what you're looking for is an identity for this team to have.

59Now is not the time to be looking at data, people, right? Forget all the other podcasts that talk about data and tactics and stuff all the time. That's not where you need to be spending your energy. Say the podcast you mean. Yeah. Say the podcast you mean. Huh? Say the podcast you mean. Well, Bardi's one. But the one, what you need to be looking at is what your eyes and what your just football feeling tells you. And what it tells you right now is that there is a lot of stuff that needs to click that isn't. That's not to say that it won't, but don't be consoling yourself with XG and all of this nonsense.

31So no, what you are, you're a popularist. Alex, which, you know, ends up with terrible people getting in power typically. And what I'm saying to you is the facts, without the emotion, the facts, statistical data that doesn't care about how you feel, said we should have scored 1.8 goals in that game. Yeah, but... Isn't it, Mark? Yeah. I'm not arguing with you two about this. No, but Alex, like, don't you feel there's been a, like... I look at these three games and I think there's been progress. I would go out and say like huge progress because we haven't scored a fucking goal. So, but like, I think there's been progress from the first game through to the other two.

19Like I definitely, I think there was progress to into Newcastle. And then I definitely think there's been more progress. Like what was the progress? I don't, I wasn't moved either way from Newcastle to Forest. What, what was, what was the progress from Newcastle Forest, you think? Defensively, maybe? Before the season even kicks off, soccer fans are already making predictions. Who wins the league? Who qualifies for Europe? And who's lifting the trophy at season's end? On Calci, America's number one prediction market platform, you're trading against peers in a live market, meaning there's no house.

48And as the probability changes, you can buy in and out of your position. For a limited time, download the Calci app and use code CUP26 to get$10 when you trade 10. K-A-L-S-H-I, Calci. 21:26Find fashion, the best brands, new trends, and so much more for every room in your house. Go ahead, you deserve these deals. But seriously, with these savings, why shop anywhere else?

42I think defensively, we look more structured and more solid. I thought Van Hecke has improved massively over the three games. I think our fullbacks look more. I think Udogi played some of his best minutes. I really like the look of Robertson now so I think that's good I think defensively we feel good it was Gallagher's best game definitely Gallagher's best game easily I definitely I also think the attackers looked better like I know Mamouche you know but he didn't miss it by that much I think if he do you know how I know wait wait wait do you know how I know that you don't mean that is because how high pitched your voice went when you were talking about and the attackers were there also it would have been chalked off anyway for a foul on Nico Williams.

24I should have buried it, but there was one bit that Marmouche was really guilty of, and that wasn't squaring it to Kudus when he had that opportunity. But his overall play, that turn was like, you know, it was unreal, unreal. So, yeah, sorry, Mark, there were positives. And it's fine to be optimistic right now. You feel a little bit better than you did after Brentford, Alex, at least. After Newcastle, I did. All I'm saying about Forrest, I'm at the same point as I was after Newcastle, which was infused despite losing 2-0. Yeah, and we didn't lose. Last time, they slapped us for six last season.

03I just say, it does worry, there's no goal in three games. It fucking doesn't matter, Alex. Don't worry about scoring goals. Football's not about scoring goals anymore. Do you know what I'm doing now? It's been like this for like two and a bit years now. I know. Is it like, when I watch football, I'm like, I'm watching Everton United. I'm like, I feel like I'm watching a different sport. Because I'm just seeing all these people smiling and having fun and these mental things happening on a football pitch. And it's like I'm like, it is like a different sport. This is not a game that I recognise anymore.

33I was doing a podcast with James Alcott yesterday, no, last week, sorry. And I was like, you're looking around and you're looking at all these people enjoying it. There isn't a great deal between us and Chelsea now, right? In terms of our appetite to spend and be aggressive, I think there is no one with the limitations we have as a football club, given the fact that we finished it at 17th twice, that was more aggressive and ambitious in the transfer market than Tottenham. So you could say Man City, but they're in a different world. We spent more than almost every other team. We are being aggressive.

13And maybe that's going to take time to play out. But you do look around and go, it's not fair that we're the only ones that don't get to play. That's exactly it. it's not fair it just isn't look at all this stuff happening like they someone scored a screamer on like who was it Maitland Niles I was like since when has that been in his locker I didn't even know he was a footballer anymore I thought he gave up I had no idea he was there honestly when it was like that it was like that David Brown I was like what are you doing here I could not believe it I didn't even know he'd signed for him I screamed when he scored that goal and do you know why not because I give a shit about Maitland Niles or Evan I just like goals now I don't care who scores them I just want to say it's so true I just want to see team score goals it's mental isn't it it is crazy but I thought overall overall positive I agree with you about Van Hecker

05I'm enjoying him more and more every week yeah some of his line breaking passes I know it's like such a boring nerd thing to sit and talk about but like just think like I think there was some mad stat he's already done like a third of what Romero did all of last season for us in terms of, I know you're a big Romero star now, so you're like, I'm going to need to go and fact check that. That's the only fact you're going to care about for the next season. Alex would rather, he would defend Romero in an argument ahead of one of our actual players currently. That's not true, but I will say. No, that is true.

37All right. So if you had a choice, what could you do with more confidence? Defend Tell or defend Romero who's left us? Oh, yeah. That's different. He's our player, Alex. You won't get behind our players. Yeah, but Tell's shit. oh dear here we go i just i'm just i'm trying to be positive about van hecker and this is sorry i like i like that i like van heck um is it van hecker or van heck who cares van hecker is hecker i care because i've been abused abused about pronouncing barry val's name correctly for two years and i stopped with my guns and now everyone's saying yeah you are right i am right i am fucking right so i want to know it's van hecker isn't it so stop everyone saying van heck it's not van hecke is it and it's not it's not i've heard people call him like sean or shan it's not that it's yan yan paul van hecke fan if you want to be a real prick about it fan fan that's how they pronounce the v in dutch alex is loving it um yeah i wonder what they call him like in They're probably just calling Paul.

44Jan Paul?

48Yeah, so it's fine. We're going to win the league. We're going to win the league. Three, you know, we haven't scored a goal. Get it? Don't look like we're scoring a goal. But is that really what this is all about? What did we think of... Right now it's about passing triangles, isn't it? That's what it's all about. Yeah, yeah, absolutely. There was a great moment when Kinski passed to... He had the option to go left or right. The centre-back split. it it went into Benton core not under a great deal of pressure but you had to pass fine van hecker with the pass as soon as he hit that pass van hecker knew exactly what he was aiming at and hit it through the lines into our midfield and you just got moments like that like that if that becomes second nature and if it becomes just easily what what we do if someone is dumb enough to bait you know if someone is to dumb enough to fall for us baiting their press and we can pass through them like that, then I think we're onto a good thing.

45And what fucking pissed me off is that fucking... Can you be offensive to Austrians? I think you can. I don't think anyone cares if you're offended to it. Hit us, Austrian. You can do what you want. No one here, certainly. Go for it. No, there's quite a lot of people listening. I've said... I've had my wrist slapped by a few of our listeners recently. Oh, yeah. I don't think they give a shit about Austrians. Australia. I didn't even say the word. I said Austrians I said Austrians anyway Glasner going it's easy it's almost easy to play against the Zerbi you know exactly what you can do it's easy and they were like what the fuck are you on about firstly was that easy when you were conceding corner after corner not goals but corner after corner after corner weren't fucking easy was it you cunt it's the death of it I wanted to ask a question before we move on what did we think of Fernandes being on the bench.

40Okay, before you answer this question, let me read you Deserby's quote. Okay. It says, I have experience to know enough what is this stadium. This is verbatim. This stadium is England football. I think he meant English football. And Gallagher, he knows better this type of game. Mattis will become, for sure, in my time at Tottenham, one of the best players. But I'm lucky enough that I have good players and I have to find the right first 11 for each game. So here's a choice. Yeah, yeah. And I think we all want to see Fernandes playing football for Tottenham. I think we all agree that he'll probably be our best signing out of everyone that's come through the door.

19But the De Zerbi as the manager has just chosen that for this game, it wasn't right for him. So back to De Zerbi. Was he correct? Yeah, I think Gallagher was excellent. I thought it was a really good game from him. Yes, he was correct. I felt Gallagher was good and I think I put it in the group after about 20 minutes I was like whisper it quietly but I think Gallagher's playing quite well here why do you have to whisper it quietly? because there's people in our group in particular that get quite angry about about Conor Gallagher and I my issue with it was is he was playing well but not in the role that he was actually in like he did some really nice some covering works and really kind of dogged type stuff in the middle of the park but you know he was essentially playing number 10 and nothing was happening.

08And I was like, well, 10 something, 10 it. We don't have any though, do we? I know. And this is what Rick and I have been saying all summer. We need another 10. And that's why I just thought Fernandes would have been better at that. And I don't think he did get it correct. I think Gallagher played well, but I think that was the incorrect call. If I can say something quickly. I know the, I don't know, it's tough to say. it's probably easier now that the game's happened, right? To sit here and go, should have played Fernandes because I agree with Al. Gallagher didn't do a lot creatively, which is probably what we were looking for from him.

46And it was a physical game. So maybe that's where he's, and Fernandes did have that little knock. So maybe it was also a bit of a medical team kind of suggestion to not start him and let this thing kind of come out of the game a little bit, let people tire a little bit. But I think we do look better with Fernandes on the pitch. but I also think it should be less about which one of the six slash eight we play and who do we play in that ten and now that Madison looks like he's back we need to start playing Madison I think if he had James Madison or Javi Simmons available especially Javi Simmons I think he probably still would have gone for Gallagher I thought we'd have to expect that this is what the Zerbi's going to kind of do going forward maybe not in every game but away to forest or away some you know teams that I mean we found it difficult to play against everybody so it's hard to articulate properly what my point is here but you know City ground loud you know they've got to be in the bonnet about Spurs being a big six and for some reason because they've been in the league for three years or whatever it's been they now think no we're at Spurs I think that's Bill I'm saying it's the same thing with them countries as well is that there's like you when we were playing in the Champions League you were in the championship so let's not be silly about this conversation and we don't give a shit about being a part of big six it's crap it comes with an extra element of expectation it's awful it's awful especially a team that's like bottom of that six consistently um yeah do you know you mentioned something there about uh for now and and fernandez isn't a 10 either and all his good work for for southampton and for for west ham as far as i've seen has been in the sort of sort of deeper areas of midfield but perhaps he would be better than Gallagher.

33And he did that night. He made a lot of space for himself and that nice sort of... The passing itself meant nothing that went out to Kudus but it was the end of a move that was really satisfying. So Fernandes probably can play there but we definitely don't have a specialist. But you just mentioned at the moment Fernandes about his minutes and like the knock. I didn't know he had a knock. Is that a thing? I don't know. I think Martius made it up But there was... Alistair Gold says, reported on De Zorbi saying, great game, Benton Korsen, Ali Gallagher, Van der Ven, great game. I'm sorry because Savio and Destiny in that moment, I think they could play something more than 60 minutes, but that was a plan with the medical staff not to take risks and I can't decide like the pitch says.

21And I can't decide like the pitch says. I think that's sort of... Half English. Not half English, you can speak it well. But it's interesting how we've been managing the players, don't you think? I think they're acutely conscious of the mistakes that have been made in the past, because if we've had three injury-ravaged seasons that have curtiled any ambition that we could possibly have, you cannot legislate the amount of injuries they've had or we've had over the last three years. I think they're consciously thinking about the minutes in the legs of the players so that we don't overexert, we don't roast players back, we're not tempted by the desire of seeing Madison before he's ready.

06And while it's frustrating as a fan base, what's more frustrating is every game seeing one of your key players drop and been gone for four weeks, which is what we've had. So I'm kind of fine with that. Yeah, I mean, it kind of is what it is. And I'd rather and be careful, particularly at the beginning, where we've got plenty of points to pick up if we need them. um you know later on the on the track was madison in the squad on saturday no no so my position on on this is i'm a little bit more concerned about that part of pitch because i don't think madison is coming back at any i'm not sure we're going to be able to rely on madison ever again as a starting for an hour 70 minutes type player i just he's just never been out there do you see about snap where he's only started he's only finished three 90 minute games for Tottenham since coming to us.

56Really interesting. Yeah, I just don't think that's him. And obviously Xavi's injured. So I think we're going to have to end up with, you know, with a Kudas playing as a 10 or a Mamouche playing off of a central striker. Just something to try and bridge that gap in between. Because that's what I missed a bit about Bentico, sorry, when we talked about earlier. That's what I was really impressed with Bentico with was that bridging of the gap between defence and attack, which I thought he was kind of the only one really doing that to any strong degree. So I think we need someone in there. So that touch that Marmouche had where he span away and got it away from, I can't remember the defender now, but got it away.

37And obviously the touch was too heavy. He didn't come to anything. But that's where I want him in there because he was lively. And I was really impressed with him up until the not scoring it to Kudas and then spanking it over the top. I was a bit angry at that. but up until then I thought he had a really really strong game and I think he's only going to get better but I am still nervous about creativity at that end of the pitch regardless of who's coming back at the moment and I'd I'd like to see us try something different with that and not just be Gallagher or Fernandes okay

23what did you think of savio i'm just gonna be over more hard line now i thought savio was was uh appalling all right i'm gonna get rid of you alex if that's what we're doing i'm joking i don't think he was appalling but um there was yeah it was it was she's trying low percentage stuff and not many of it not much of it came off which is i think fair uh i'm not sure where do you think he's better on the left or the right because i i could he seemed to get past a man easier on the left hand side but yeah it looks comfortable didn't he over over there that that like i said i've already explained in this moment that there was this thing where he he does a lot without moving it's almost like you feel like being a bit more forceful with what you're doing like but be more committal with the pass put more weight on the passes whereas it's all delicate stuff but when it works it was it looks like it just looks like magical he didn't there was no sort of end product to what he did and he didn't look like he was gonna and which was the main criticism of him from from man city fans but it there's a great player in there and and And I'm convinced of it.

35And there were just moments and flashes against Forrest where he's just getting into the team and he's not played a great deal of football. I think there's a big future for him. And that's not saying anything, really. I just think he's trying things. And like you say, low percentage areas. When our wingers are going to be playing wide and sticking wide to create space, you have to stand up your fullbacks. Because if you're not doing that, it's pointless. if you're just rotating the ball backwards. Well, that's why I asked, because I thought the first half in particular, I think in retrospect, I think I would have preferred him to be on that left-hand side the first half, because there seemed to be more space over there.

15When he was trying to cut in from the right-hand side in the first half and was just coming into quite a lot of traffic, they had five at the back at times, and there just seemed to be a bit more space over on that left-hand side, which Tell just didn't really capitalise on for me. Yeah, I was going to say, is that not more of a also to do with the fact that Tell just wasn't really trusted didn't really do much I mean Tell had just Tell had half the amount of progressive carries that Savio did less successful dribbles like he just he just he doesn't I mean Tell for me is is more frustrating and I fear that Savio like it's too early to say but what we don't want to do is we don't want to like stunt Savio's you know potential because we have Tell in front of him.

04I agree with you. I think Savio is a better suited left winger. And in an ideal world, you'd have Savio on the left and Kudas on the right. I think that's our two strongest wingers. Mark, can I ask you a question? Because some of the criticism was our unwillingness to try and play. Did you hear that? It was a burp, an inward burp. What the hell? An inward burp. I don't know if it just happened. I'm not in full control of my body. As we know, I shat myself twice last year.

35A lot of people have been critical of our unwillingness to try and play through the middle and try and get into the box by playing through the middle, which I kind of anticipated would be difficult. Why is that difficult when you've got three really good centre-backs in Forest and you've got McAtee and... Who's that Austrian geezer that they bought? I think it's from Leipzig. I was really impressed with him yesterday. I can't remember his name the other day. Anyway, it wasn't easy to play through Forrest, through the middle, was it? No, well, that's it. I mean, you've got a team, you know, they played three at the back and like Al said, out of session, it was more of a flat five.

17So you're always going to struggle playing through the middle because they've also got two strong defensive midfielders, which who I thought, and you've mentioned Makati already, but Schlager had a good game as well. Schlager, that's it. Yeah, yeah. And so, yeah, it's always going to be tough. And that's why we're, you know, but a lot of Deserby's play is also about utilizing your wings, either for a cross or for an overlap, using your full backs and try and create overloads that way. Using your striker to sort of drop back and pull your center backs out so that you get a bit more space in the box and then you win your duels and you get your second balls and so on.

52So like it is, it's both a combination of it is more of a Deserby approach but it's also tough against teams like Forrest who are happy to sort of sit back and sort of soak up and they are happy to concede possession and so on. And then, you know, we had Glasner coming out and trying to rage bait a little bit saying, you know, all these comments about how De Zerbi's style is, you know, he knows De Zerbi's style, but that's just the way it works, right? Everyone knows I love a Glasner style. Everyone knows everyone's style. Like nothing is a secret anymore. But yeah, we're going to see more of that.

30And it will eventually work. Once the players start clicking and start understanding what De Serbi wants from them. The good thing about De Serbi is he's very clear with his instructions. There is a lot of them. And we hear that a lot about how teams in the beginning of De Serbi's tenures sometimes take a little while to click. It isn't always immediate. But it will click. And like I said, the good thing is he is so clear and he delivers things with such passion that eventually it sinks in. And then when it starts to click, you know, it will be good. I mean, this is by far on paper, the best team he's ever worked with.

10Right. So I'm just scared though. Like it wouldn't normally bother me. Wouldn't bother me. Wore off a duck's back. As soon as you said it, I was like, shit. yeah but how did that play out in the game yeah no but what i'm saying is this is what i'm saying but when he said it i was like oh shit is it maybe it is easy yeah yeah maybe it's really easy i i thought that as well alex i i thought that as well yeah but i thought oh no because grassland knows more about football than me what if we've made a massive mistake about deserving all that stuff enters your head it really does but you watch games play out it's less evident there's nothing left now other than for me to be like well uh if we've done everything this club has done everything right that you can possibly think of to be good to self-sabotage we've done it all the only thing we hadn't done is spend fucking loads of money and still not be any good and i'm really worried that this is it might take three months for this team to click yeah Which we should say, I said from the beginning, really early doors, I said, I'm really excited about the season, but I'm deeply concerned about the first five games.

26Yeah, fine. That's fine. So then that's on us, Alex. That's on us to hold our steel. I ain't got any steel left. I'm not very good now. Stronger than you think. Stronger than you think. Do you remember them motivational videos you used to watch when you go to the gym? Yeah, we did. Do you remember? Yeah, what was it? I can't remember the name. Motiversity. Motiversity. Yeah, yeah. Give me some highlights. I can't remember what they were. You've got to be hungry like the wolf climbing the mountain. You've got to be hungry, not the wolf at the top of the mountain. Yeah, yeah. The one climbing, it's always hungrier.

03Yeah, yeah, there you go. We're climbing a mountain. Yeah. Can I... I'm fucking starving though, Flav, honestly. We're all starving. We're all starving. Hold on, hold on. It's going to be fine. And this is a great time to tell you that... This is a great time to tell you that the farting cock is sponsored by Saley. And I just want to say thank you to everyone who's been sending messages of them signing up to say the, their dads and granddads have been signed up on your behalf. Listen to this. It just, it's a great thing because it saves money and it saves you money. So what we're selling to you is something that saves you money in the long run.

39There's a geezer, like I said last week, a hundred quid for 14 days or 10 days in Greece. with Vodafone. That's how much you have to pay for this data. Not with the eSIM Saley app. And what I've actually just discovered is that if your phone gets nicked and you have Saley eSIM activated on your phone that you know, in a way that they can turn off your airplane mode so that it can't be accessed and found by various methods of finding stolen phones with the eSIM app is still active. and these wankers won't know that you've done it. So while you'll still be able to see that your phone is in, probably in Asia somewhere.

26Right. Go on. Somewhere over there. Isn't it? What? What do you mean they all go to Asia? Is that what you're saying? Where do they go, Alex, if they don't go there? Well, I don't know. But what if you're in Spain? It will get nicked in Spain and then lend up chopped up for parts in Asia.

53Yeah. Yeah. Okay. So the link is in the description below. Download the easy amount. If you go on holiday and you want to save money, you save lots of money. So the amount you pay for a data plan with sale, it's, it pales into insignificance of what you have to pay to Vodafone, and all these other phone carriers and you're supporting the podcast at the same time. You are legends. Thank you very much. And thank you to Sadie for continuing to back us. Let's do some questions from our lovely patrons. And the first one, oh fuck, I've refreshed the screen. Shit. All right. Shippo says, do you think Mikhailo Mudric will look back in 12 months and regret all of the Uber fares he missed?

41What does that mean? Don't know. do you know what that means? Because he's been doing Uber driving whilst he's been banned, I'm assuming. Oh, I see. He's actually been working for a charity, volunteering. Does that make you feel any better? Have you got any hopes at all? Mark, have you got any hopes at all that Mudrick will turn out to be a good signing or positive signing for Tottenham? Is it hope or is it belief? Oh no, it's hope. It's definitely, it's 100 % hope, I think. Like, you know, the social media team have been working their hardest at trying to glaze him, you know, during practice.

18We got that video of him scoring a couple of night goals and all that kind of stuff. And, you know, like, I think we all want it to happen, right? But I think it's also like we've discussed before. I think he was relatively low risk. Like, I think we have so many options in front of him and so on. It's a loan. we didn't pay the 75 there's no obligation to do so so it's relatively risk free whether or not it'll come off I'd love it to but knowing Mudrik he was a player that relied on pace for the majority of his time and so in games where we need to rely on transition he might be a good one to bring on and yeah it'd be great to rub everyone's noses in it the 75 mil option is steep but there's no, you know, if he shows flashes and we go back and renegotiate that, which is an option, then, you know.

17There is a risk. I understand the frustration from Spurs fans in that what are we essentially doing is getting him back up to speed. If the option is on Spurs' side, which I'm sure it is because the fee is so high, he has to have an incredible season, which I don't think he's capable of having. I hope I'm wrong, but he has to have what like what in order for him to for us to pay 75 million what kind of season do you have to have Alex um 10 goals 10 assists minimum I mean I mean as you know I was apoplectic with this with this sign I couldn't believe it uh and I don't I don't get it I don't I don't care but you know does Erbi only work with him for about 14 games not like they were there for like three years together um just really don't get it but like i said hopefully he's going to be two second third down the pecking order and it's it's a it's a squad option more than anything else and let's see chris thatcher he says the question chris thatcher who's doing bits on instagram by the way go and follow him um it's very funny stuff do you think that there is a collective unconscious worrying that runs through the club and and the fans that uh that then has an actual effect on the outcomes of our performances i'm starting to believe it's a very real issue but he means like a collective ptsd or yeah like i guess i think the only way that can be true is that if they players feel it in the stadium rather than like they they feel the players and the staff and the people that exist at the football club feel the kind of pessimism from the supporters and they probably do they they will do and i think there is a like when you hear sports people talk um and people that have you know played for other clubs and so on like um you know there's lots of football documentaries out there and they do speak about things like oh it just it feels like there's a winning mentality at this club and you go and speak to, you know, if you watch the Alex Ferguson documentary, like even the dinner ladies are like used to winning stuff.

34And at Chelsea back in the day, you know, there was this winning feeling inside the club and so on. Like it is a, I think it's a real thing. When a group of people become accustomed to a certain emotional state, then they find that emotional state when they're together. And I think like probably been quite depressing at Spurs for a number of seasons and that will permeate through to the staff. But I mean, I go back to it, like the only people that can actually change that are sitting at the very top at the board level. And they've now done most of what you'd feasibly say they could do by just spending a fuck ton, putting people in there that will change the culture.

17And then, you know, then it's down to the staff, players and managers. City was the same. You speak to City fans and how we feel about Tottenham, you know, typical Spurs. They had exactly the same, typical City. And they had obviously had it a lot worse than we did. And that's still an element of that that has only very recently started to disappear. I remember even in their mid-second Premier League title, third Premier League title, when they would lose a few games on the chart and it would be, oh bloody, typical City. And it's like, what more do you want? You want four on the bounce. And now it's still typical City where you concede a goal in the 88th minute.

58It will always be there to a degree in that stadium. If we are 2-0 up and someone scores and there's 10 minutes to go, one, it's just natural. It's just one of those things. There's very few grounds in the world where if 80 minutes you concede a goal and then suddenly all of the crowd have a tremendous roar for for the team and say go on you're fine you'll be all right and sometimes that happens against arsenal maybe because it's just everyone wants it all so badly but it doesn't happen like it nerves and this comes in so what i would say is there's more outside noise now for players to listen to more than ever before whether it's logical or not um and i think if i was a player if i was the club i'd be saying that you you need to be nowhere near social media anyway and if it's anything to do with football, there's nothing good that can come of it, of you here listening to outside noise about you or the club.

54Yep, it's nervousness, not nerveness. I think that's what you said. Yeah. So, EzekTH20.

07Why are you friends with me, Alex? He tries. Why are you friends with me? I'm mean. sometimes I'm mean to you unnecessary and I apologise yeah but if it's someone you look up to who's mean to you like you'd get upset about it but like I just find like it's inconsequential to me now back in the day when it was you know I want to be on the podcast then like that but now like you say I've got no headphones although I have just had a webcam delivery so you'll be able to see me in much clearer detail from the next time what you've got going on is fine anyway well I don't say that because I've just spent you know why have you spent it on that just so that I can it's a long boring work story but also So just for...

43Who else is it for? For you. No. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to say what I know it's actually for and whether or not you can say or should we not? Yeah, let's not. Let's say it's for you to see me in 4K. Yeah. Imagine me with no clothes on. Right. Okay. So IsaacTH20 says, with Will Langshear currently on 7-7 in all competitions and us not having scored a single goal in the Premier League this season. My question is simple and somewhat obvious. What fish would Ricky use to describe his meat stick? And what bait would the angler need to get him in their net? Meat stick. It's not a meat stick. Someone did get the...

32We spoke about this recently about... I know Ricky's going to hate this, but about what my name for his cock is. and someone got it right out there i won't say who uh any any shouts for the fact that did we make a mistake with will langshaw or is he just playing a level below i said this right at the beginning i said when he was sold i said that is a that's a big shame i was really excited for langshaw to be the bench option and i think from what we have heard he was willing to be that and wanted that shot to be the rotation option um but we were offered money that we couldn't turn down i guess and i i get that and i contradicted myself slightly because i have said a lot about you know the sars of this world and bergval and all the rest of it about just i'm not we're not about that life anymore like it's improvement for now but langshir is a is a bit different as that kind of traditional number nine and he's scoring goals in the championships that in the championship that he would score in the Premier League.

31This isn't him going past free players and spanking it top right and corner. This is about positioning, about getting in the end of low crosses and being in the right place. And I'm, yeah, I said right from the beginning, and I got a bit of grief for it, but I was really disappointed that we let him go. I thought that for the type of thing that we do, I wouldn't say he was going to be a world beater. And evidently now, after what's happened with Richarlison, I, you know, Solanke's made of, you know, built like a sparrow. it's, I would really have liked him to be on the bench. And I'm, I'm, I was gonna say, I'm pleased for him.

05I don't care for him. I, I'm just annoyed, but it's not for us. When you're talking, the hardest gigs get to come up on your thoughts as artists. Jeez. Uh, all right. Next question.

21he says, Hey, Flav, do you want to say thanks to you and the boys one last time for everything? What? One last time. finally got some help and i'm in a better place fucking hell mate why don't you start with that why are you reading this stuff live i don't read the questions before why did you stop maybe it sounded like that was the end of it yeah so no mate mate i'm so happy because i know you've gone through it and i know we've um we've mentioned it before and i'm so glad you're getting help but when you phrase that sentence you gotta don't make it sound like you haven't got help right tell us about the help first and then the other bit can i just say this isn't your fault mate like this this is flav not there's a podcast that should i not read it yeah i think you should read the questions before you decide which ones you're going to read out live on it yeah should i not read it should not have read this one no no you should have read it but what i'm saying is is why don't you pick the questions that you want to ask read out first so that and not not be so against editing stuff all the time like you could do that this is the way it is now it's been that way for 15 years and I'm changing.

24Wow, I'm glad. Can you read the rest of it to make sure that we're all happy? Well, that's everything. Finally got some help and I'm in a way better place. You're a legend. Legends and you put a little kiss. I'm so happy for you, mate. And good for you because it's not easy to go and seek help, especially as a man. And to seek help and at work is a magical thing. So good for you, mate. Good for you. Good lad. Who was this again? That Northern Yidkid. Oh, cool. and you know Spurs haven't helped in that last sort of 24 months we've all gone through it because of them cunts so good on you it was great that the club put out the supporting mental health stuff that the club put out was obviously really really strong it's a Premier League thing well like across yeah because they did it at the Arsenal game and I'm like no not you lot yeah but it was good it was good that Spurs made a big thing of it as well but I will say some of the most joy that I'd had that week came from the comments underneath it saying that you know you've been the biggest issue i know it's funny i've got i've got i've got a mate of mine who literally did that from the first game i won't mention on here but he knows who he is literally the first the first social media post they did about after a game he's like just fold and then just ever since then whenever there's something up it's just i hope you didn't exist.

47I know, yeah. It's funny. Well, this is, I mean, we all, I mean, despite, it could go as bad as it's going at Leicester right now. You remember Leicester getting chippy at Spurs? You remember the memes in 2016? It's funny. Yeah, do you remember that? I saw, did you see they were up for sale for like 50 mil? Now look at you. League One getting battered by Oxford 4-0. Life comes fast, you little slags. Selling Oliver Skip to Charlton. yeah that's your reality now do you enjoy your league title did you I mean I would have a lot right last question Josh Almeida bring T back I need to know if De Zerbi is on his fraud watch he is T will yeah

37T goes early and he hasn't been wrong recently so fingers crossed he is this time uh and i'm not i'm not stopping him from being on here t is welcome at all times he's just prioritizing his family and his work life over he's been doing that for quite a while now and it's getting a little bit i'm not even sure he listens anymore just no like hell does anyone in the group listen i'm not even sure they do i don't even listen anymore uh i listen if i'm on it wow i don't listen if i'm on it i do put on if i'm like in the car or whatever all right yeah dismissive cheers cheers cheers thank you Mark thanks I'm also still a patron by the way I don't know why I can give you a link I'll give you a link I know you say that but you never fucking send it though do you right bye everyone

Spurs are still waiting for their first Premier League goal of the season, but are there finally signs that Roberto De Zerbi’s methods are beginning to take hold?

Flav, Alex and Mark discuss the draw at Nottingham Forest, Rodrigo Bentancur’s resurgence, Conor Gallagher starting ahead of Mateus Fernandes and the early promise shown by Savinho and Jan Paul van Hecke.

They also revisit Neco Williams’ disallowed handball goal, debate Tottenham’s lack of creativity and ask whether the club’s collective anxiety is affecting performances.

Plus, can Mykhailo Mudryk rebuild his career at Spurs, and was selling Will Lankshear a mistake?
