In short
The hosts “rate” Tottenham’s summer 2025 transfer window, debating overall quality, squad balance, and whether Daniel Levy’s reputation improved or worsened. They also discuss the wider transfer-window media ecosystem and specific Spurs decisions (e.g., Eze/Gibbs-White/Madison timing, left-wing needs, midfield balance).
Guests

Guest backgrounds
Ben Bowman is a Tottenham-focused football podcaster/commentator (co-hosting “The Lab” and referencing other Spurs-related shows like “Football Between the Lines”).
Key claims
Spurs did enough to return to the Champions League conversation; best signing is Xavi Simmons (favorite) while Kudus may have biggest impact; Kolo Muani is crucial for striker depth and back-to-goal play; Paulinha adds “steel” but may need midfield tweaks after a poor match; Levy’s reputation is “net worse” due to slow deal pace, despite credit for getting Simmons done.
Notable examples
Kolo Muani’s Frankfurt form; comparisons of Kudus/Simmons/Paulinha profiles; reaction to Paulinha after a match vs Bournemouth/PSG/Man City; Mark Gahey staying at Crystal Palace as a contrast; Vuscovic leaving for continuous minutes; talk of Savino/Luckman as alternative winger targets.

25your jobs moving just like that at Lowe's. Tottenham's summer 2025 transfer window was full of peaks and troughs, ending with a squad that feels reshaped and refreshed. The arrivals of Mattis Tell, Kevin Danso, Kota Takai, Mohamed Kudus, Yao Paulinha, Xavi Simmons and Randall Colomawani addressed key areas, though questions remain about the depth at centre-back in the absence of a true left winger. Kudus has already shown that he can make an immediate impact. Simmons is viewed as a special talent and Paulinia adds vital still. We also asked a question about whether or not Daniel Levy's reputation has been enhanced, remained the same or decreased during the window.

24Hello and welcome back to another episode of The Lab. I'm joined by Ben Bowman as we look back at Transfer Window, which had many peaks and troughs, confusion. I'm exhausted, really, Ben. I'm so glad it's over. Yeah, I don't know. How do you feel about Transfer Windows as a whole? Because I was talking on another podcast, Football Between the Lines, which is not Tottenham Pod, more generic football stuff, and we were talking about like how mad the window is and the industry that surrounds it. Yeah. People have made millions that are making content. Like Romano, Rizzo Romano is a millionaire. Yeah.
01If he isn't, then he needs some help in monetizing what he does. Well, he was doing a Boohoo Man deal on Twitter yesterday. He was doing a little Boohoo Man video. Paid partnership. So I'm sure he's getting his fair wedge. He's doing well. He has an audience, right? But there is an industry around this thing that really has nothing to do with football. We're having football fans talking about deal sheets and and and obligations and and the way finance is structured and what really is net spend i'm guilty of it i do all the time yeah it's just thinking what is this anyway it's like a thing that exists outside of football and it's like it's fascinating for us to talk about it that's the thing we like we exist in this industry that surrounds it as well but it can be incredibly tiring to be a part of like but but it's equally as tiring for fans who are just like obviously we fans but fans who make content like normal fans who don't necessarily do that it's equally as tying for everybody especially when you're kind of getting fed like like take the Savino deal for example right as a as an example just kind of getting fed the same piecemeal updates every single day that had about nothing has happened Garnaccio to Chelsea Fabrizio just kind of saying the same thing every sort of 24 hours or so it's like it winds people up way more than it should but you can't ignore it because we've been so conditioned just like to need that dopamine of like the next transfer kind of hit.
18Like it's just the way it's become now with the amount of coverage that's around it. Don't be me wrong, like there's always been big coverage around transfer stuff. Like go back like 10 years and how, you know, everyone, how much everyone locked into like deadline day and stuff on Sky and whatever. But it's mad. And when you bring up Dan there and Football Between the Lions, it's like Palace fans have been through the ringer. And one thing where Palace is like, they are quite a good example of what this all comes back to and it all actually just comes back to the football and that is why they should 100 % be happy that Mark Gahey is staying at Crystal Palace they should be 100 % happy that their manager has got involved and gone nah he's not going anywhere threatening to basically walk as well and it's like they're going for another season now and I'm not buying this whole thing of oh he's so hard done by he's getting massive sign-on bonus when he eventually gets that move next year anyway he's fine it's only Liverpool fans that are banging on like that because they wanted him.
10Where are the Liverpool fans going, oh, look, that's a shame for Mark. He didn't get his dream move. Just because you chose to support Liverpool and you live in fucking London. Why didn't you buy him three weeks ago? Yeah, why didn't you give the money that would have forced them to move? Because you didn't want to, didn't you want to put up? And you've had two clubs over the barrel, Liverpool fans, and they're just saying, oh, it's a shame he didn't get his dream room. Yeah, but it's a shame Trent did though, isn't it? It's a shame Trent did. Yeah. They drive me up the wall. They really do. So anyway, we'll talk about Tottenham's transfer window, which on paper, in hindsight, without any worrying about the ups and downs and the Eze saga, I would say, well, interestingly, this is the list.
53And I put a poll out yesterday in preparation for this pod to find out what people thought, you know, rating the window out of 10. And I'll get your thoughts on that in a second, mate. But this is the window. So Matisse Tell made permanent. Danso made permanent. Kota Takai. Mohamed Kudus. Jao Paulinha. Savvy Simmons and Kolo Mawani. Not bad. The poll we put out, what would you rate it before I tell you the poll results out of 10? I voted. You did vote. I did vote. I did vote. In my own video, I said between seven, seven and a half. So I voted in the seven to nine bracket on that part. I shouldn't have made it so broad because seven and nine are completely different, aren't they?
34Yeah, but it still represents like, if you said between seven and nine, and it's like that's either good slash very good. So yeah, that's true. Yeah, I would say probably eight. I wasn't as obsessed with defensive backup as everyone else seemed to be. I don't know. This might come back to bite me. I wasn't, but I literally, I was just recording the pod that I do with Will, Darren and Doerr, and we were talking about it. And when he was speaking about it, I was actually a little bit like, maybe we should have signed someone. Because it's in the back of your mind now. If Romero van der Ven get injured, I know we've got Danso, we've got Dragasin coming back as well.
08We've got decent depth there. But I think I ignored it a little bit too much just because the attacker was clearly the priority, that that was where everyone's focus was. So maybe we should have done. But I don't think it's the end of the world that we didn't. There's still decent depth there. Okay. All right. So let's have a conversation about this window then. So your overall impression, your overall assessment of Tottenham's summer 2025 transfer window. So did we do enough or did we fall short of Premier League rivals? According to TalkSport, of all places, Spurs ranked third best in the window in the Premier League.
45That's not bad, considering I'm pretty sure I saw them slagging us off a few weeks ago saying, what a Tottenham do. Then again, we all were, to be honest. We've landed on our feet, I think, a little bit. but yeah I think I think in terms of in terms of our rivals for those Champions League spaces we've had a much better window than Aston Villa who have fallen well short I think and I like Harvey Elliott as a sign actually to be honest but bringing in Sancho and stuff like that I was just thinking before I was like that could have been us they've now got no goalkeeper yeah no well they've got Bizot or whatever his name that Emery kept saying the other day when he was asked about Martinez he kept repeating his name what he kept saying Bizot bizot bizot yeah he just kept going like the interviewer went to him i was like where is emmy martinez and he just went bizot just went and then he just said it again um we know his name's bizot yeah where is martinez why is he it was like that interview where he again he was like good evening europe europe europe um but yeah that like that i think obviously the rfp situation the issue that they had not getting into the champions league i think has kind of made them fall behind a little bit and not really kick on in the way that they could have had.
55They took a gamble in January, didn't really pay off. And I think Spurs have been able to wrestle back the hierarchy, like to get back above Villa, I think in the hierarchy of where people probably will be placing us this season, I'd imagine. And maybe the same with Newcastle as well. Individually, I quite like some of Newcastle signings, but they have lost Isaac fundamentally. And I know Vista is guaranteed Prem goals, but Valtemada, who I like as a player, it's still obviously young. It's a risk, you know, strikers coming to league or that kind of stuff. but some of the other business. I do think we're in a better place than definitely those kind of teams.
27Have we strengthened as much as Arsenal? No. Have we strengthened as much as Liverpool? I mean, that's an unprecedented kind of window. Chelsea's a bit of a funny one. I think they've kind of like massively, you know, they've bolstered that squad, but I don't think you could say they've had necessarily like a much better window than us or a better window than us really. How do you define it, mate, to be honest? It's a difficult one with Chelsea. It's so hard to assess, I think, then. Yeah, well, they've just got a system and a coach and a way of doing business, which is comfortable for them. I know other people don't operate in the same way as Chelsea, but they're bringing in huge revenues from player sales.
03They're spending a lot of money, but it's relative to what's coming in. And while, you know, if you asked an Arsenal fan, but they weren't only Gokerez or Jao Pedro, the answer should be Jao Pedro, but it would have been Gokerez. So I think a lot of what Chelsea's done is understated. Jamie Gittins from Dortmund is a really good signing. And they've just got so much depth that I think that on paper, it's not a conversation about who had the better window because it's relative to the plan in place. Yeah. And so I would put us, in terms of the strength of the squad now, I'd put us probably significantly, notably behind all the teams above us in terms of Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea.
48team that's not to say that players individually can't you know bridge that gap I just say on paper in terms of and while I'm comfortable with what we did in the end yeah I'd say it would be we haven't stolen a march on those those teams so it's still going to be about what Frank can do with these players now yeah I do think that the thing is with that as well is that like there would have been a hell of a lot to do if we were going to do that like I think I do think like if we'd have signed Savino for example I think that definitely would have put us closer it's probably not even possible Ben no really if Liverpool are dropping over 400 million the most ever by a team is that right I think it might be a record transfer I think so I mean their net spend is still like I mean they've done well to recoup a lot of that money but yeah they've still spent a lot but you're not it's hard to it's essentially keeping up pace and hoping some drop off but yeah also I think it was about I think for me as a fan I think the objective of the window was to make sure that we get back to being in that Champions League conversation.
51And I do think that when you look at Man United, although they've spent a lot of money and brought in two Premier League proven talents in that attack, in Mbumo and Kunio who have been good so far, Sesco obviously juries out, but if so young, etc. They've got far bigger issues than what they could have just addressed in the transfer window when you look at their manager. And actually, I don't think they've addressed their biggest problems anyway with the midfield and the goalkeeper. So, like, I still, I think when you look at Man United, Villa, Newcastle, those kind of teams, Brighton, I think, are in a good place as well.
19But I think we're, I'd put us back above them. I think I would. So, I'm happy with that. It's like, the thing is, a lot of people are going to judge the window through the lens of, like, did we do everything we could? And that is totally fair. We didn't. We didn't. And that should be a little bit of a blot on it. So, let's talk about that. So, in terms of squad balance with the signings that I mentioned, And I thought the deadline day capture of Kolo Mwani was crucial, not least because I've been banging on about wanting to sign him for about two years, it feels. And he always ended. I don't know why I became obsessed with him.
55I think it's because of that video I watched with Frankfurt, where he just tore the league up, which led him to be signed by PSG for€95 million, which is not insignificant. it's massive money this is before the big big sort of stand well the standard the like the level of transfer fees seems to have gone up you know what the what you have to pay to get sort of decent players now seems to have gone through the roof but before that karen mohani joined psg for that 95 million euros but he's forming that in for frankfurt he was like the first of that clutch of of strikers that they've gone on to develop and sell mohani was him and i've been obsessed with him since then so given the fact that we either slanky is going to be fit in two weeks or he's going to be out for four months whatever we don't know what the truth is i think bringing up a a number nine who arguably could lead the lead lead Tottenham even if everyone was fit but to have back up to Richarlison or take Richarlison's pace was crucial he could also play on the left wing i was really comfortable with that that uh that sign in they people were saying that while he can play on the left wing he isn't perhaps the left winger we need like Savigno yeah I definitely agree with that um yeah I agree with all you what you said about Kodemawani individually I think in isolation it's a it's a really smart signing um I do think it's not just someone that's come in to be a backup although there's no option there or obligation is what is the truth in that is it definitely no option I think Fabrizio was like the only one that said there was and I'm pretty sure he backtracked anyway uh so we'll see so that's interesting but yeah he's not someone that's just coming to be a backup.
32This is someone, like you said, who actually could end up being Tottenham's main number nine. And to have three strikers that will be competing for that over the course of the season, they're never all going to be... You'd imagine we won't get to a point where they're all fit at the same time. So those minutes are going to be shared around, which is good. Offer us different things. I think Kish said this quite well in a TikTok that he made yesterday where he was saying that Kola Mawani profile-wise is almost a bit of a blend of Richarlison and Solanke. I think one of the things that was massively lacking in Richarlison's game, which was so frustrating and led to a lot of what we did breaking down on Saturday was his back, hold-up play was back to goal.
06Nothing could stick to him. And when you were kind of playing with a number 10 like Saar, who's just in there to kind of nick the second balls and then we could break on Bournemouth like that, having a striker that couldn't bring it down and make it stick, it was basically just made us for, and on top of other reasons as well, totally kind of just impotent like in the game really. But, so I think kind of more on his back-to-goal players are a lot better than Richarlison's. I think his box presence is good. Richardson is probably as good if not maybe a little bit better but it's maybe better than someone like Solanke's so I think it's a good blend of like the two profiles that we've already got and his ball carrying is really good as well if you want to be like a transitional team he's so good over like long distances running with the ball again playing the Bundesliga that massively helps with that but I do think like I was thinking yesterday I was like okay this is good in isolation I like the fact that he can play out wide but I'd maybe would have prioritised someone like a Luckman who can play out wide and up front potentially if we were only going to make one signing.
01But maybe if Solanke is that screwed and is going to have consistent issues, then maybe going for the striker does make more sense. And then we could have got a winger on top. But there was obviously a reason why they didn't go for Luckman. Do you think that if we... Sorry to cut you, mate. That's right. If we would have got Luckman or another winger, that we would have had too many players. Maybe. Because it's like we're dismissing Tell and Odebeer like they're not good enough. This is the thing. I was speaking about this this morning. it's like Tell and Odebeer were two players that every single fan I think well not every single fan but a lot of fans were like quite largely excited about when Frank came in because it's of his track record of being able to improve young attackers and make them more clinical in front of the guard and improve the games yeah now's their chance and that's what I hope I think I'm a little bit frustrated because I think Odebeer should have got more of an opportunity over the first few games not necessarily against Man City I think there was a clear game plan in place there and Johnson and massively contributed to that.
56But if we're going to avoid signing a winger and not go for someone like Luckman, which was a really good market opportunity, I back the fact that they've not done it ultimately because there was obviously a reason why. Fair enough. Now I want to see Odebeg given a proper chance because I do think that, especially when you look at Saturday, I think we're all coming away from Saturday thinking we need a new left winger. It's not Johnson's fault. I think the actual issue for me lies with Frank playing Johnson out there in those kind of games. It doesn't work. I don't like the dynamic between him and Spence necessarily either.
23Obviously, a doggy's going to come back. It's cool. That's fine. But I think we were all walking away from that thinking we need someone else out there. But I also think partly you've got to give Odebeer a chance. I think especially with like Kudis and Simmons coming through the door, which I think could be game-changing signings for our attack. I think the thing with Odebeer, last season we were all so desperate for him to come in because he was a profile that we were massively lacking, even though we didn't necessarily think that he was the answer right then. I remember when he got that run in the team, everyone was kind of clamoring for it because it's like we don't have a 1v1 threat.
59We need someone that can be confident, stand at them on, take them on. He had quite a few good games and then sort of dropped off a little bit. But we were so desperate for it to work because we really needed that. Whereas now, there's so much quality sprinkled across that attack with Simmons and Kudas coming in that actually Odebeir might benefit quite a lot from that in the sense that there's not as much pressure on him to be the guy that creates, if that makes sense so I think you should be given an opportunity now I think if you've made that decision to not sign a winger because either you feel like you can go back in for Savino in January or next summer if he's the guy you want which I think there is an opportunity for that if Rodrigo continues not getting minutes Real Madrid that might push Savino to sort of go like well I'm not getting minutes here City could do that deal we could get that deal he wants to play in a World Cup year City do do business in January there's a chance for it to happen but now I think you've got to trust the best I think you've got to trust him I just don't think Johnson's going to work out there in those kind of games.
51Yeah, I wonder what he's going to do though because I think he likes Johnson. He wanted to sign him when he was at Brentford and I just think... But Saturday was such a like a... That was so bad. I know, I know, it was terrible. But then it was just collectively across the team it was terrible. Yeah, I do think Johnson's being made a scapegoat a little bit. I think the issue... Yeah, I think again my issue is not with Johnson. My issue is actually with Frank using him like that. I don't think it's good for anyone really. I just don't think it works. Fair enough. what was our best signing do you think so who stands out in terms of the best acquisition obviously Kudus, Javi Simmons Pauliniar who's your favourite signing out of the lot?
31Javi Simmons imagine buying your kid a toy only to find the batteries aren't included or buying furniture but missing the tools to build it frustrating right? Stock up on Welch's Fruit Snacks, made with whole fruit, and now made with no artificial dyes. It's a snack kids already love and one you can feel good about giving them. Go back to school with Welch's Fruit Snacks, now made with no artificial dyes. I think in terms of who's going to have the biggest impact this season, I actually wouldn't be surprised if it was Kudus over Simmons. I think as much as I like Simmons, there is obviously always the chance that he could take a little bit of time to adjust.
29So I think Kudus could maybe end up having a better season, but I both back them to have very, very good ones. But I think in terms of the stature, the potential and the feeling around the signing, I think Xavi's my favourite. Like he's a player that I've wanted at Spurs for a few years. We were linked with him back in 2023 before he went to Leipzig on loan. He's such a... And also, we desperately needed a player in that area to get one of the best options on the market for that good a deal. I think she is my favourite for sure. Yeah, and the thing is he felt like a player that we couldn't get.
00It was unattainable. The fact that Chelsea were tracking him through the transfer window. You know, when Chelsea won a player, they are aggressive in their pursuit of him but I think they kind of realise that they have so many players that can play in that position, but dropping another 50, 60 million pound on Xavi Simmonds wasn't something they obviously weren't committed to do because they didn't actually put a bid in the end. But regardless, from a Spurs fan's perspective, you just think there isn't a world where we can make this happen. He's not good. Given the options available to him and how well he's been performing in his short career thus far, captaining the Dutch side in every age group that he has apart from senior, and at PSG as well, coming through the groups, captaining that as well, I think I might have meant PSG rather than Holland.
43I might be right. I might be wrong. Definitely a PSG though. And so he just has the credentials to play for a team and probably will do one day, a team that's at the very top of the game. And Spurs, having finished 17th and, you know, starting the season in the way, it's been decent, but also, you didn't know this, but we were about to get beat by Bournemouth. But our position wasn't one that necessarily we have to attract him. The fact that we got him through the door desperately needed since the Madison injury, I'm not sure we would have done that business if Madison wasn't injured. I just, that is a special, exciting signing.
19Yeah. Like, I agree with you in terms of most the efficacy of the signings. You think that Kudus is probably going to have probably the best season out of the lot, if you had to predict. And obviously, in terms of value and just opportunity to sign Paulinho on a loan with an option to buy is, I think, insane business. I was well happy that got it through. And interestingly, the Athletic put out an entire list of every signing. They ranked every signing from 1 to 154. 53, I think, yeah. Yeah, and Paulinho was ranked as the best signing of the summer by any team. Wow. Yeah. I think that's a bit...
03I mean, I would probably say Alexander Izak if it was me, but... This was their reasoning, just so you know. for two years with Fulham Paulinho was arguably the best Premier League's best hairy ass ball winning anchorman and possibly one of Europe's best too for Spurs to bring him back to England for peanuts adds a layer of steel to their midfield that's been missing for some time Paulinho will not only shore up their defence but also allow their creative talents to shine yeah I do agree with that also I think that if you kind of bring it back to Saturday just quickly as well like people were being so reactionary about Paulinho after that game and kind of saying that this is why I didn't really want him.
42We wanted someone that we should have prioritized someone who's got more ball progression, all that kind of stuff. Again, it's a little bit like the Johnson thing. I can understand why people think that Paulina shouldn't necessarily be playing in those sort of games. And maybe we want someone who can help us progress up the pitch. Those issues, again, like I said, are hopefully solved with Simmons coming into the team or if Madison was fit, et cetera. But also, the issue for me was the dynamic of the midfield. It wasn't Paulina individually who can't play in those kind of games. it's just the fact that should we be playing Palina and Benton Court and Sarr together in a game like that so there are things that are going to have to be tweaked but again people will just jump in on it straight after and being like see Palina and all that kind of stuff I was like well look at City and look at PSG those are the games that we brought in for it's still going to take Frank a little bit of time to just Ben I don't think it's worth and I appreciate it from a TikTok and YouTube perspective you do have to talk about it in that way but a week before everyone was singing these praises It's like you can't be so reactive to a single game and listen too much to instinctual reactions if people are going to be conclusively saying, this is why I didn't want Paulinia.
47Yeah. On the back of two worldy performances, one against PSG and specifically the game against Man City, and for them because of one game, because they're slightly disappointed, they can't kind of harness or be a little bit more philosophical about the signing. It means that they're probably not even saying what they actually genuinely believe. I don't know. Yeah, I think there's an element of that. It's just frustrating. But I'm with you, I think Paulina, for those bigger games and just giving us that bit of steel and protecting the back four and just winning those dual second balls. It's a really, really smart acquisition.
24I think that passer, that progresser in midfield is something that we can address further down the line. I think you can also get that in other ways as well from Romero and from Simmons dropping deeper. and I think it's a real shame that we don't have James Madison because I think that solves so many of those issues and I think someone put a tweet out the other day it was like it's almost when you think about what number 10s are in the Premier League now it's so rare that you get a profile like Madison who does a lot of that stuff so much of it is about ball carrying and dribbling and Morgan Rodgers and those kind of guys but like Madison is such a rare kind of breed still so I think if we had him fit it wouldn't be as much of an issue and hopefully Simmons can help us with that.
06Do you think there's enough goals and creativity in the front line now we've got Simmons? Creativity, yeah. The thing that does worry me is the goals. I think Simmons can bring goals for sure. Like we spoke on the pod on Friday about his ball striking ability from outside the box. His shooting technique is really good. He's obviously brave when he's taking his shots and he's happy to take them on. He wants to do that. But I am a slightly bit worried and that is why I wanted someone like Luchman because he's proven goals in... I know Serie A translating to the Prem and he's been in the Prem and flopped before but he was a kid and all that kind of stuff I think Luchman would have been someone that you can rely on that final third to not necessarily play as instinctually as Johnson either because I think Johnson is more of that final action player and can guarantee goals that way Luchman is more of a son where he can kind of like drop the shoulder get a shot off he wants to kind of do that so I do that is why I wanted him so I do worry a little bit about the goals but I think there's more than enough creativity there with like Kudus, Simmons, Corners and Crones as well.
11Yeah, they can kind of help us open up the game as well. Like, there's more strings to our bow maybe. Like, because a lot of people were like, when we lost Madison, Kuliszewski and Son, everyone was like, well that's 60 goal contributions that you've just lost from last season even when we finished 17th. So you've got to replace that somehow. But I do think, yeah, the overall approach of set pieces and stuff that will help. There's no doubt we're going to score less goals than we did last year, but the key is to not concede 400. Yeah, yeah, yeah. What did you think about the kind of loans out Manol Solomon?
43We were talking about this. I don't care about Manol Solomon, but I do think there's this weird agenda against him. I don't know if it's kind of politically motivated. If it is, I can understand how people's political beliefs directly impact how they feel about someone who is from that region but i think even before what's happening in the middle east people have made their mind up about man or solomon before he even arrived i don't think all of it is to do with that the political agenda i i just i think it's weird like people hate him i think he's shit and i think in the spurs shirt i didn't think he was shit at all i thought he was six out of ten it was okay it's fine if you want him out i just i just don't understand the level of hatred unless it is all about like i say the political fallout too i think that's definitely kind of charged a lot of it to be honest um with some of the things that he's posted and whatever throughout the time yeah like i do think that's a bit of it he also like i think one thing for me was that i think there was some people who went a little bit overboard about how good he was and he actually only played like six games and it was almost like people like acting like for me like last season i remember like people were almost acting like because he was doing well at leeds he could have been the saviour for us.

00I was like, yeah, he's doing one in the championship. Like, he's not like, I don't know, like people are like, oh, he should be playing. It's like, what? I don't know. I just don't think he's that. I think he's okay as a player. I don't think he's that good. Leeds could have signed him if they were convinced that he would do it in the Premier League. They could have signed him. I'm sure he would have gone back there. Exactly. So, yeah, I think it says a fair bit. I mean, no one cares that Mano Solomans know one at the club, though, do they? But one player that did decide to leave, and I kind of really respect the fact that he made this decision was Vuscovic.
31Yeah. Because we'd put a plan together. According to, who is this? Alistair Gold. He said, they offered me an option to stay to play in case of injury or cut matches, but I wanted continuous minutes. They have Romero and Van der Ven playing there, two of the best centre-backs in the world at the moment. I believe in myself and it's really difficult to play next to them. I've faced, sorry, I believe in myself, but it's really difficult to play next to them. I've faced them and I realise I still have a lot of work to do. A lot of work and a little luck, but I'll be back. That is the, that's the mentality.
04That's the mentality. Yeah, that's what you want. Yeah. Mentality monster. I, yeah, I like that. I do really like that. And I think. I like the fact that he's acknowledged the fact that, that he's not better than them. Yeah. He's also acknowledged that having played against them, how much he's got to learn. And the key bit is just, I want to play. I want to keep playing. I don't, we talked about this and I think the best move, and we talked about this at the start of the summer the best thing for Vuscovic would be to give him a more competitive league to play in rather than the Belgian league and there's some good players and teams there you see what Brugge have done in the Champions League recently and what they've done to Rangers recently how good they are but there are you need to be playing against quality opposition week in week out and I just feel like the move's good for him and he'll come back a better player and there's no doubt he has a route directly through to our first team 100 % but if Romero and Van der Venne are fit they play yeah yeah yeah I totally agree I think he I think we all got very excited about Vescovic because of what we saw in pre-season and obviously what we saw last year as well in the Belgian League he's just a freak of a kind of a centre-back profile and the goals and everything like that and obviously he did quite well in pre-season obviously that Reading game where he came in and scored and set up a goal and whatever so naturally we're all going to get very excited about him and you want to I think as a fan's perspective, you kind of want to keep him around and see like, oh, this kid's got something.
31But for the player's development, 100 % the best thing, and he recognises that is to play as well. And I think he's got a very, obviously very good head on young shoulders to kind of go, no, actually, rather than trying to maybe waste time trying to break through into the first team now. And no doubt he would have got some game time because injuries are inevitable and all this kind of stuff and League Cup games and whatever, I'm sure Frank would have used him. but having a season in the Bundesliga playing probably starting week in week out for Hamburg is way more valuable from a developmental point of view 100 % and you know Hamburg are in the position and have been for a long while is that they will despite being a massive football club I went to see Hamburg play in a pre-season friendly actually about six years ago for James Alcott's Stagdew they decided that a pre-season friendly between Werder Bremen and Hamburg I was sitting there so hung over mate walking to the stadium going what are we doing here unless you got to bed two hours ago now we're in Hamburg Stadium pre-season friendly anyway anyway they will it will be difficult for defenders there to play against and compete and a lot will be asked of him and it will be important for his development to play that kind of level of football you know what he's gone through is playing in Croatia to playing in for Westerlou in Belgium I think this is it I missed a team and then going to the Bundesliga it just feels like the correct way.
53I couldn't see him starting in the Premier League. And remember, we spent£25 million on Danso, who everyone seems to kind of like. Yeah. So he's not ahead of Danso either. And it's not like he's naturally left-footed so he'll play if... Van de Vend. Yeah. And Ben Davies there as well. So it was the right thing. Yeah, totally agree. It makes sense. I mean, I'm excited about what he can do at Spurs in the future. I really am. I think generally the outgoings have been... It's taken a minute, but I think we've probably got there. Bissouma, the Turkish window, I think it's still open for a... I think it's not done yet.
22Now, there's a few... Sorry, there's a few windows that's still open. I think the Dutch and Belgian ones are open until today. And then I think Turkey and Greece, I think, are open for like another... I want to say like another week. Maybe Saudi as well, potentially. How's that work? Oh, mate, it's so fucking... I don't know. You can still sell players, but... I don't know. I think it should all shut up. It should all close at the same time. Yeah. But so Basuian will probably... I know there was an issue with Galatasaray with his fitness or something, wasn't it? Or Fenerbahce, I can't remember where he was going.
52But I'd imagine he will get a move out. So pretty much in terms of the outgoings, I think other than maybe Dane Scarlett, who maybe they're keeping around for club registration, or sorry, club-trained registration purposes for the Champions League, maybe. That's why they've not loaned him out or moved him on. I think pretty much every other youngster has got... I know people might say, I'm not sure about Mikey Moore at Rangers, but at least on paper, he's got a loan move where he's probably going to play. He started in the old firm the other day. I know Rangers are a bit of a mess at the moment, but hopefully that will change sooner rather than later.
24And yeah, Hill's gone on a permanent. Solomon's gone. They're not in the squad. So I think from an outgoing perspective, we've done basically everything we needed to do as well. Ben, what do you think of Daniel Levy's performance then? Because obviously his reputation's gone through the mill again. I've said some horrendous things about him this summer. 38:07There was a lot of debate around, oh, Lang, Perrachi, who's the better one? Should we keep both of them? Should one of them go? Whatever. I said it. I was like, the biggest issue is not the players that were scouting. It's about getting the deals over the line. And ultimately, that makes the buck stop with Levy. I think he got unlucky on the Gibbs-White one. I do genuinely believe that. I gave him the benefit of the doubt with that. I think that he had to respond in a way. And they did try and get Eze. But I know there was so much about the Eze thing about, apparently he was just desperate to go to Arsenal and he called up Arteta and all this kind of stuff.
38There was no way Spurs could have got the deal done. But we've been there before where we've kind of had stuff fed out to the sort of people like Ali Gold, who I really like and stuff. But sometimes it just feels like they're running that line of they did everything they could to make it seem a lot better. The reality is that we didn't push on with a deal when James Madison did his ACL injury. And it's quite clear that Eze was a target for the long term. So why didn't, if we'd had acted a little bit quicker, maybe we could have got it over the line. so I think you have to question the process and question the ability to get the deal done there I appreciate that Steve Parrish is not an easy negotiator as Liverpool have also found out and many other clubs have found out and we did get gazumped essentially and kind of blindsided a bit but the reality is I think we still moved too slowly on that one in the first place so I think you can definitely even though you can appreciate we've had a good window and ended up where we've ended up you can still definitely have questions over Levy but at the same time then you've got to praise him for getting that Simmons deal done because Chelsea were clearly in.
33I mean, I know they didn't bid, but they clearly obviously wanted him. So for Spurs to sense an opportunity. To convince him. Yeah, exactly. And also that's down to the manager, I think as well, Frank, to be fair. Like I think, and the recruitment team as well, Lang, et cetera, to kind of sell the vision. But then maybe he had to sign off on the£200 ,000 a week. Yeah, yeah, of course. Yeah, and that's where you've got to give him the credit. And also one thing I was going to say as well is that Spurs, to be fair, this summer with Gibbs White Simmons and Eze and Kudus to an extent maybe Kudus wasn't quite an easy deal to do because of West Ham situation etc but they have been ambitious with their transfer targets and have been linked and tried to sign the sort of players that we were all kind of clamouring for to kind of make sure that we never finish 17th ever again and kind of make us get back to finishing in the Champions League places trying to get around that like everyone would have been buzzing if we'd signed Eze and Gibbs White or one of them right or Eze or Gibbs White so when that level of ambition goes up in terms of the targets naturally you are as a club like topman you still have to respect a little bit that there is a hierarchy in the food chain and there is every chance you could get your ass bitten a little bit when you are being more ambitious with your targets like there's a for example there's always a chance that arsenal could come in and and that so they have been they have showed more ambition i just think sometimes it's the the pace in which we move to do these things that kind of ultimately makes us fail but I still think that Xavi Simmonds is a I still think there's every chance that we've got the best player out of those three so I'm very happy with that but I still think there's little things that make concern for the future in terms of the window Go back and listen to the Xavi Simmonds podcast if you haven't already but we go through a sort of data-driven and statistical analysis of who is the best player between Nico Paz, Eze, Xavi Simmonds and one other, I can't remember who else who was the other one?
21Morgan Gibbs-White Morgan Gibbs-White and you'll see statistically Xavi Simmonds is significantly ahead in most areas if not all also I think sorry just one final thing on that in terms of like people getting frustrated with I've been very frustrated with Levy very frustrated with the way that we went about the window at certain parts and I think naturally because the SA1 was so close and we've won him for so long you become more emotional about it and especially with the fact that it's Arsenal it heightens everything by a 10 right but you also don't know what to believe a lot of the time you are getting I know I said it about like Ali Gold's kind of putting stuff and this is again not a dig at him whatsoever he's just being told what he's been he's writing what he's being told but this whole thing about they did everything they could also on the flip side like we're getting told that we're bidding for Nico Paz even though he knows he knows we don't we can't get him but you don't even know if that's true a lot so it's like it's just so I think it's just better to kind of maybe ignore you can't you live in the moment so much as a football fan with a transfer window It's all just kind of happening at that time.
24But if you strip all that away, you can just go, actually, when you look at the players that we have ended up with, it was good. Sometimes you just don't believe everything you do read. Indeed. So the window is shut and we now know what we've got. If you have to predict our league finish, where do you think we'll finish? Fifth. I'd agree. I'd say fifth as well. I confidently Champions League football yeah I think I think that coefficient is I think that's a that will be a permanent change now with how well the English sides with how much the English sides spend as well compared to the other leagues and how that the place that puts them in to be more competitive in the European competitions I think I do think fifth will probably just become a Champions League space over time so yeah I think I think as well like a lot of it a lot the window plays a part in that but also the manager plays a part in that.
20I'm confident that we've got a manager that will just make us win more games of football, make us be harder to beat. I think in the cup competitions as well, I think Frank at Brentford is you know, he obviously didn't prioritise him that much because he didn't necessarily have the squad, but I think we can have a good go at those as well. There'll be a shift in mentality when it comes to a team like Spurs and obviously I do think getting the monkey off the back in terms of the trophy is significant for making us build on that as well in terms of the mentality of the squad. So I think we can have a good, I definitely think we can have a good season and like I said in terms of those other teams that will be competing for those spaces I think I could confidently say we're in a better place than Man United better place than Aston Villa and a better place than Newcastle obviously there's your Brighton's Bournemouth's I think who will all be in that mix as well for sure like they've Bournemouth are so good like they are really good as we saw on Saturday Brighton are good it's not going to be easy but I definitely think in terms of those other bigger rivals that like to think they're bigger and better than us obviously other than Man United in terms of Aston Villa and Newcastle I think I can confidently say we're in a better place than them right now.
20Who do you think had the biggest net spend in the transfer window across all of the Premier League?
29Gooners? Yes, £257 million spent. Pressure on. €1 billion since the last trophy, isn't it? Who, how much, the next is Liverpool, £218 million, then Man United, where do you, and then it's Spurs, in fourth, followed by Sunderland, Everton, Leeds and Forest. How much money net spend do you think Chelsea did?
56What, the figure? Net spend figure? Yeah. I reckon it was something like 50 million. They made 18 million. So they're in net negative. Fuck me. I know they're outgoing to good, but to be fair, they actually didn't spend that big. If so, think about it. this is the thing everyone's going mad they're stockpiling players but and I'm not sure this is the best method of of how to to do things but like PSR will never be a problem for Chelsea it really wouldn't and maybe that is the way players the amount of players you know big names have been brought in like everyone's been so active in this transfer market I don't know yeah right yeah they brought in a total of 332 million.
47That's crazy. Yeah. 56 million for Maduweke and Kuku, 37 million. Jal Felix, 30 million. Petrovic, 28 million. That's a good player. Anyway, it goes on and on. They can't keep getting away with it. How do they do it? It's nuts. Right then. Take care, Ben. Thanks a lot, mate. Nice one, mate. I see you. Avatar Fire and Ash is now streaming on Disney+. Tottenham’s summer 2025 transfer window was full of peaks and troughs, ending with a squad that feels reshaped and refreshed. The arrivals of Mathys Tel, Kevin Danso, Kōta Takai, Mohammed Kudus, João Palhinha, Xavi Simons, and Randal Kolo Muani addressed key areas, though questions remain about depth at centre-back and the absence of a true left winger. Kudus looks ready to make an immediate impact, Simons is viewed as a special talent, and Palhinha adds vital steel. Luka Vuskovic’s loan shows maturity, while Daniel Levy’s role in the window is still debated. Spurs now look positioned for a top-five challenge.
