In short

Don’t change your identity or writing style because one person rejects you; let the market decide and practice self-awareness.

Guests

Alicia (caller/student aspiring author). Gary Vaynerchuk (host, entrepreneur/author; argues against overvaluing gatekeepers).

Key claims

A single reader’s “decline” isn’t proof you should alter who you are. You’re “pandering” when you seek approval from middle-management opinions. Instead, post your work publicly and let audience response determine value.

Notable examples

Alicia says YC team rejected her raw writing application; Gary reframes it as one random reader’s decision. Gary cites his own “report card” ranking (243rd of 254) as evidence he ignored what didn’t matter to him.

So it's like, it's like, they, it's like, that's me. So it's like, they're not accepting me. Fuck them. But it's like, should I? No, but honestly, guys, first of all, they didn't decline you. One random fucking person that read your shit declined you.

You can't let something be valuable more than, you're pandering to them. Let them come to you. Take that same essay and post that shit on Instagram with a photo and see what happens. From the publisher

In this bonus episode of the GaryVee Audio Experience, I talk to a young writer who got declined from a writing team and was ready to change herself to fit in. I share why one random middle-management person doesn't get to decide your worth, why I was ranked 243rd out of 254 in my class, and why self-awareness beats gatekeeping every time. I also encourage her to post her work on Instagram and let the market decide instead.

You'll learn about:

• One Person Doesn't Get to Decide

• Valuing Yourself Over Their Opinion

• Self-Awareness Over Gatekeeping

• Letting the Market Decide

• Not Changing Yourself to Fit In
