In short

Football talk covering Arsenal’s Champions League final vs PSG (Arsenal win on penalties after a low-possession, defensive approach), discussion of Liverpool’s decision to sack Arne Slot, and speculation about Marcus Rashford moving to Arsenal. The episode also includes lighter segments (music/gigs, drinks/bottles, gadgets/egg boiler) and a “Prize Guy” game.

Guests

Jason McAteer, former Liverpool and Bolton defender.

Guest background

McAteer is a Premier League-era defender with experience in big matches and penalty shootouts; he shares personal anecdotes about football culture and penalties.

Key claims

Arsenal’s approach “drew” the game and forced a penalty lottery; PSG were too strong to expect Arsenal to play expansive football. Liverpool’s sacking is framed as tied to erosion of Klopp-era winning culture and a style mismatch. Slot’s departure is discussed as not surprising given performance drop and fan/media noise. Arne Slot is contrasted with potential replacements like Arne Slot vs alternatives (notably Arne/“Iriola” discussed) and the need to fit Liverpool’s identity.

Notable examples

Arsenal’s fifth penalty taker Gabriel; references to past penalty moments (Istanbul, Ronaldo, Baggio, Schmeichel-era memories); Liverpool’s Premier League drop-off stats are mentioned; Soccer Aid cameo/penalty talk; Enrique’s barefoot training and egg-boiler gadget debate.

1:27Welcome to the good, the bad, and the football. joining us today, former Liverpool and more importantly, Bolton defender, Jason McAteer. Welcome, pal. That's right. Welcome. Thanks to you, Jason. Thanks, mate. Cheers, pal. And also, I should add, the man who cost me a fortune on a black jumper. Yeah, we've had that story, haven't we? Oh, I've seen that. Yeah. Yeah, that is true. But the barbell, I'd seen you, didn't I? Yes, that's true. I've never run up a barbell that amount in my life. Me, you, Don Hutchinson. It was never that much. China War. It was. no it wasn't it was what did he say it was two and a half grand it was I've never spent that on a bar bill in my life it doesn't tell the truth about a lot of stuff Jason thank you I'm telling you no it was China White you can run up a bar bill there are 20 grand the three of us the three of us you two that's some way of Latin you two in the 90s you two were giving it the old no no no the big bottles of vodka and all that oh no Premier League Premier League and I'm going to be a a Red Bull cost you about 30 quid we had about 10 cans at that lunch table I'm telling you it was I wish to this day I'd well there were no thingies then I took a photo of it because I remember when you just said the thing about throwing your cards up in the air and you two pulled out platinum whatever and I've got mine with that colour my bank card fucking Barclays I was like didn't even it was too light it just went like those went platinum oh when mine was the right way I was like oh I nearly shit piss and cum at the same time oh fantastic what is the year I've talked to bar bills because it did make me think what's your biggest bar bill or the company you've been in where you've had a horrendous bar bill I just duck about duck out of bar bills when it comes can you remember one that's massive no I can't remember that's massive the biggest one I've been in is we went to Vegas for a stag and it was about 14 of us all the lads from you know the city in London yeah all that 28 grand the bar bill was 28 grand for 14 of you proper slipped off for 14 14 14 lads yeah what's that you're good with maths that's 2 grand a man 2 grand a man 2 grand a man 2 grand a man it's 2 times 14 hey and you're saying to me there's no way we spent 2 grand between 3 of us yeah but I slipped off I didn't pay it I got on no but what I'm saying is you're saying You're saying that Bill couldn't have been two grand because there were only three of us.

4:01You've done 28 grand with 14 of you. Yeah, but they were all from the city and really rich. We're city lads. We're city boys. No, it wasn't two and a half grand. Right. Now, normally, as we come to the end of the season, they came up with a pearler of an idea, two pods back about something good and something bad that's happened to you this week. And I've got to say, one good thing that happened to me this week, chaps, everything you buy now from the shop right is usually in a plastic container right mainly bottles and also i was the only person i think who went you know when they did that where you unscrew a plastic bottle top and it's and it stayed attached they stay attached or the wrestling i've had What?

4:47This is faulty. I've got that, yeah. So, but I had, out of a glass bottle, some Vimto. And I tell you, the taste, what I'm saying, the taste. Finsic Vimto. No, still. But because you're out of a glass bottle.

5:04Nicky:Ready-made or Cardial, that you've got to make yourself. No, seriously. I've never seen it. I've never seen it. What? Ready-made, like you can drink it straight out of the shop or you've got to make it yourself. Yeah, you've seen Vimto or Cardial. That's what I'm asking you. Is it? he's saying is it the bottle of Cordial or the ready made in the bottle it's got to be ready made right it's a bottle of Vimto Cordial well you didn't say Cordial did you no you said ready made I didn't say ready fucking hell I didn't say ready made can I just tell you a nice story about a little sorry anyhow isn't Vimto it's just a northern thing isn't it is it no I reckon you mean it's like northern drink yeah I think they have Vimto down south I'm sure they do they don't want to have them do the Marxies down south.

5:47It's like Vimto, they don't have them. Do you ever get McMarx's down south? We don't use it, do you use Waitrose? Did you ever get mixed up? We've never ran up a two grand bar bill. Did you ever get mixed up

5:57Nicky:when I was younger with a Sarsaparella? Remember that? Sarsaparella and Vimto. Oh, I like the Potman bottle. Did you have the Potman? Yeah, yeah. Did you have the Potman? Yeah. We had the Alpine man. That's it. Alpine man, yeah. And you give your bottles back? Yeah, I give your bottles back. Did you get the bottles from your neighbours and all that? you've got 10p you want to tap the top back you can also do it if you're taken back to the chipper if you bought it from the chipper yeah so what did you say that name were then Alpine Man Alpine there was another one it was called Bar Bar yeah Bar B-A-R-R cream soda yeah and then the one round near us was Corona Corona yeah yeah and they used to come round on wagons with crates of them on the back and as a kid do you know oh that's lovely you go around trying to collect them bottle tops and get 10p living the dream and this is what I'm saying that was the devil's way though sarsaparilla that was awful what was that I didn't mind it I'll tell you what I did enjoy back in the day a dandelion and burdock oh iron brew ginger ale iron brew iron brew favourite tizer like to ginger ale Canada dry it's cold eyes got the eyes can you get tizer eyes got the eyes and I got it in tizer oh no is there not tizer anymore you can't get tizer garbage no it can't you must be able to get tizer you can't you don't see it in them bottle.

7:11Do you remember his song? Eyes got the eyes. No, no, that was the only, it was, I'm extremely mean and I'm really groovy. Some people call me a bit of a smoothie. You can tell it's Tizer when your eyes are shut. You can tell it's Tizer when your eyes are shut. Do you remember that? No. Did you have a drink last night, buddy?

7:27Nicky:No. I did. I was at Soccer Aid. Did you not see me three minutes? Don't watch it, no. You only give a penalty away in three minutes, remember? I didn't give the penalty. Listen. Nearly. I came on. Dived in. I came on. You dived in. With three minutes left, right? That's why you dive in. Yes, I'm thinking, I need to get a touch of that ball. Can I just say something? And I didn't dive in on a player. He played the pass for you. I was cutting the pass out. I've never seen anyone wave so much coming on a pitch. I've got to be honest. I see him waving going off knowing he's playing a thousand games for the club or something like Bobby Charlton.

8:00Nicky:Bobby Charlton. How many fans are waving? Coming on. You're looking everywhere. It took you four minutes to start waving. Yeah, I'll tell you why. I'll tell you why. Planes landing and everything. I'll tell you why, that was my 10th anniversary and they'd done a big, big thing for me coming on and the crowd were absolutely, and I'm like, thank you, I appreciate it, you know what I mean? I thought it was Maradona coming on. I think we missed that bit, we didn't see the big 10th anniversary, I didn't know, I didn't see the flag. I thought it was your last one. You wouldn't have done. Yeah, it was in my 10th one.

8:32And you're a little bit told. Blinky, you'll miss me. Have you been told that's your last one? No, I said it myself before. Oh, you've retired. But what should have happened is I should have been doing 15 minutes in the nets and then Joe Marler was replacing but I said during turn I went get him on from the beginning get him warmed up I think Joe Marler

8:47Nicky:I'm not fun coming off for him no no I should have been on first we've switched it round I said I'll just do 10 minutes have a little bit of fun why was it 3 then well we give Bradley Walsh a clipboard and a pen and the rest is history he gives someone a clipboard and a whistle round the neck that's it I loved your effort Paddy I thought it was really good I didn't watch it Anyway, I don't know if you remember about half an hour ago, I said I had some bimps away of a glass bottle. Tastes nicer. What would you say tastes better out of a glass bottle than a plastic bottle or a plastic tub? I said Coke, didn't I?

9:24Coke, definitely. Coke, yeah. Although I've not drank Coke for about 10 years.

9:28Nicky:No, Coke, when you get it abroad on holiday. A full fat Coke. It's delicious. After an hangover. And I don't know if it's like an EU rules thing, but Coke abroad is like stronger. it's better isn't it bro it's better I think they get more sugar in it lovely lovely haven't Cavaliers done that with their chocolate well no certain chocolates like chocolate biscuits they have to say chocolate flavoured biscuits because they're not there's less chocolate in them that's right oh that blew my mind that what about ketchup out of a glass bottle yeah but it pisses me off better than a glass bottle loads against left you've got to put a knife up it the bit of the bottom I've just realised doing that people might be listening to this rather than watching us I'm demoing the ketchup the tapping of the ketchup bottle so someone listening and walking they're all going my god that podcast has gone off the rails absolutely right let's get on to the football chaps first things first Champions League final Arsenal PSG come in Arsenal PSG No We'll get on to the game But before the game The killers performed I didn't see that No I didn't see it Do you see that No And that's a Was it half time Or before I think it was Pre-match Pre-match Yeah No I didn't see it Because they're trying to do it A bit of Super Bowl-y now Aren't they Doing a half time show The World Cup aren't they Obviously it's a state The World Cup final aren't they Yeah Shakira and a few others Yeah Just the final Just the final yeah Do you remember the famous one With Diana Ross in the USA when she had to score the penalty it was like a massive football and the net split in half and she just had to get it she missed it she missed it and then the net just split in half that was 94 but I tell you what you'd have played in that one wouldn't you yeah absolutely as players have you ever been in a game where that sort of happened where you've had to wait for a band or something there was loads going on before the Champions League final where you play in you just don't see any of it you're in your little world you're not aware of it in the world you don't know what's going on what's the best band you've seen live best band I've seen live we first have a concert with Hugh and Cry do you remember them?

11:42lift up my labour of love I'm gonna fight all the right that was my first ever in the Royal Court Liverpool but the best I would say U2 Manchester I've seen them in Manchester U2 all the old classics

11:57Nicky:my best was I didn't think it would be but they were Oasis Reunion in Wembley oh that was good was it I can't remember when it was I've seen them I seen them when they used it the first time round and they played the Reebok and it was, and supporting them was Happy Mondays. What a gig that was. Sean Ryder. And then Oasis on after. But best I've seen live and we're going into full-on goat territory, a legendary Paul McCartney. I seen him at the MEN. What did he sing? Hey, but I'm telling you, he must have been late 60s. everyone's a winner Beatles Wings is just no stopping all the way through amazing seen the Stones?

12:45Nicky:I was just going to say we've seen when we were sent to Copenhagen I've been to less than five concerts in my life don't surprise me don't surprise me who was the best of it don't surprise you the best one I went to the white film you are you are absolutely outrageous I've got to say I'm not arsed one but I'm at music right hang on a minute if you're in the car You must have a bit of music on. Talk sport. What about if you're training? Talk sport. You listen to fucking Ali McCoyst while you're bench pressing. Much rather than do that. And Simon Jordan. Yeah. But the best I went to was Stone Roses at City's Ground.

13:24I get that. That was unbelievable. I don't like, I've never put music on it ever in my life. Hang on, hang on. Not even joking. weirdly I can sort of just about accept he doesn't watch films I can accept that Michael Owen doesn't does he? no I know yeah strange characters but the music so if you had you know like you have that death row meal if you had to listen to one song before your time's up what would it be? I wouldn't choose one you just fucking have your last three or four minutes of life in complete silence what difference is that going to fucking make to me well you might just go that's life or something like that no no live forever yes so when you're in the gym you've got talk sport on when you're in the car you've got talk sport on if I'm in a gym I watch telly Sky Sports News

14:22Nicky:you've got to move on from here Paddy he's not changing his mind who would you want to go and see alive or dead you could just go and see Elvis Elvis yeah 100 % Elvis Elvis, yeah. Or I'd like to have seen the Beatles. Do you know what I mean? Yeah. I'd like to see that. I'd like to see Elvis in Vegas. You know, like... That'd be good. Oh, yeah. Back in the day, that was... There's loads of them in there. You can see them on... Fucking... Sinatra. Get married, though. Yeah, that'd be good, yeah. Oh, Sinatra, yeah. Or Michael Jackson. Yeah. Well, we'll move on. Right.

14:54Right, let's get into... Seriously, never... Music... Oh, move on. Right, so... Arsenal, PSG, Arsenal beating on penalties. I've got to say, I've no skin in the game with either team, but if you're Arsenal, I'd be thinking, well, we didn't lose the game in 90 minutes. There's something to be said, because everyone said PSG were going to absolutely muller them. So you can argue they drew the game. Penalties is a lottery. They can hold their heads up high, really, can't they?

15:27Nicky:With the Arsenal game, I don't think anyone's really surprised, are they? Arsenal have done amazing getting over the line with the Premier League that would have been their biggest to-do list to go and get over the line with the Premier League and then let's get to the final of the Champions League playing the way they did which is not everyone's cup of tea I think they've got to be happy with the way it's gone obviously they'll be devastated about not winning the Champions League which obviously that would happen especially the lads who've missed the penalties but it was exactly played out exactly the way everyone knew it would be they stayed in defended and scored another goal which obviously helps but instead of come out and playing expansive football against PSG I think it's goals as I said a few weeks ago, I think PSG would have scored four or five.

16:03Nicky:That's how good they are, PSG. So, you know, you can't really sit here and say, they should have done that, they should have. I heard Manuel Petit this morning on the radio talking about... Talk Sport, there you go. Saying basically... We didn't have any more plugs for Talk Sport or what? No, but honestly saying like, oh, they should have come out and played, and if we'd have been playing... Yeah, but they were a different team back then. They're totally different now, and I think they played it exactly the same way. If they'd got lucky before the game, if Artessa would have been told you're going to go out of penalties to win the Champions League would you take it it would have took it all day long I think you're right Paddy it is a great achievement to take them as far as as they did because PSG you're talking about a generational team here they are a special special team and as Nicky said that was the only way Arsenal could live with them was scoring a goal first and then not touching the ball we said before it was like the lowest possession percentage ever in a Champions League final but you're playing against a great team now you can go against these teams sometimes with every intention of attacking them and having a go at them but they're that good we did it with Barcelona I think it was 2008 in Rome we'll get after them they had a few players missing we'll get after them we'll end up keep the ball you can't get you can't get a kick of the ball sometimes these teams are that good so to take them as far as they did I think was a really good achievement I think the game against Bayern would have frightened the life out of them to think you could go toe to toe you know that's what can happen as soon as I seen the team when the team come out I just thought he's just going to stay low isn't he he's going to compact the team he's going to try and not give them any space and he's going to try and nick something which they did early on and then it was about hanging on wasn't it and then they you know they get the penalty there was a couple of things in there that you could argue was it Madweke was it Madweke Eze was it Eze the penalty Madweke I didn't think it was I thought it would have been harsh to give it especially at that time of the game Champions League final but listen they've done really really well but as far as the players listen to think what they could have had which is Champions League and I mean these lads have done it it puts you into legend status when you do that kind of stuff just as a former defender what did you think when you saw Gabriel come as the fifth penalty taker because to me when Madiweke is still on the pitch I'd have thought someone like him would have been the fifth penalty taker as opposed to like a central yeah I'm always the fifth penalty is a bit of a strange one isn't it because it's the one that you can win sometimes the superstar wants to take the fifth pen don't it Ronaldo always wanted to take it or something Stephen I think was on the fifth pen in Istanbul but never took it but to see him walk up centre half you know I was a little bit ooh with the players in their team for me though if he's confident enough to go up there you've got to let him take it because you could have a forward who's brilliant I mean Scors he hated taking no one could strike a ball better than him but he hated him taking penalties so So if you've got a defender who's confident to go and do it, I would do it.

18:58Nicky:Dennis Irwin, unbelievable penalty taker. Steve Bruce, unbelievable penalty taker. Defenders, if they're more confident than a midfielder or a forward who's going to do it, then you've got to let them go and do it. And let's be honest, we all know penalties. They can score 50 out of 50 in training, but when you've played the whole game, extra time, the emotion, the fans, the expectation, it's not saying penalties. Sometimes it's easier for a defender as well because people don't expect that much. I'm telling you you surprise him you think of go back to Ireland I think it was David O 'Leary I think we're all watching I'm telling you the best penalty taker is training nine times out of ten a goalkeeper they strike the ball so well they practice striking the ball more than anyone we will do but he Keller took the best penalty I've ever seen well one of the best penalties I've ever seen in the League Cup final just stuck it in the top corner so you hear people after the game saying oh a defender if he's confident and he wants to set the penalty and he's obviously very good at it then the manager's got to go with that Who was left who could have took one was Madweka was he one did you say then did he Zubamendi as well Zubamendi yeah but if it's not confidence goals you know yourself you don't want to take one is that decided there and there on the pitch have you talked about it in training I don't think they've ever did it before because you know he's going to be on the pitch at the end of it I think they'll have an idea if Jason's on it and scores on it they're attacking him or padded but I think it's a bit of a right we know I've wanted two regularly but the rest of them are going to have to go who wants it I've been in a position before when I've heard managers go out round in that little huddle and go who wants one and if someone goes I'm taking it I would take the one who's confident rather than one that's going don't fucking fancy this even if you don't don't want one you say yeah but you can tell they're not going like that I'll have one someone else wants to tell I see that we played Spain in the World Cup in 2002 that went to pens and some of the biggest personalities shrunk when Mick McCarthy went round and went who wants a pen Niall Quinn was like no

21:00it's funny isn't it it's funny though

21:01Nicky:obviously you still think about the 2005 one that you missed but it is a bit imagine missing a penalty for the Champions League final imagine I'm not sure I can't remember what year it was but yeah I missed the old one yeah that's the game wasn't it did you rather miss for the Champions League final or the World Cup final bad you missed didn't you World Cup final Oh, remember that one. That was the 94 one? That's when he had the little poorly taken at the back, didn't he? Champions League final missed that one down in the World Cup. The World Cup, I mean, Champions League final just got to move away from Manchester, but we can't go anywhere at the World Cup.

21:30Nicky:That's your nation. That's the nation, yeah. You don't want to miss that one. There again, talk about great players. Roberto Baggio missed one. It's not made anyone come to miss a player. That is exactly the same as Gabriel, sorry. Cristiano missed one. Straight over the bar. How is it like, because you've missed a couple of penalties.

21:58yeah which one the most which one the most the Arsenal one I was with 25 lads in my

22:08Nicky:bay in the bar watching it and I was sticking up for him everyone's having a go I said he's alright you're lying let's go I didn't even think twice about him i just went straight to the bar and got around in but no okay it was the first one out of the turn as well so i was well yeah you know when i mess i'm just praying some did your message that's the best one to take the first on it i always think that get out of the way yeah and also there's another four and yeah like well that's what i thought but it didn't work didn't they all scored so yours is the one that yes there is a there is a picture of it there's a but we're all in a black kit aren't we?

22:43Yeah, I remember that, yeah. And do you know what? We hammered them. What was on it? Absolutely, no, no. We absolutely battled them. Honestly, I probably missed a few chances. We should never have lost a game. That's what happens, I'm afraid. 25:23Right chaps, that prize guy back this week. Another draw for you and this is a tricky one. Hear me out on this. You can either win a Ferrari, a Lamborghini or£200 ,000 in cash. Now, for those choices, by the way, head over to thatprizeguy.co.uk and you can answer for just 35 pence. Gosh. But I feel as though that prize guy, he's thrown a bit of a, you know, fly in the ointment with this. People like winning just one thing. To make that choice, 200 grand or a Ferrari or a Lamborghini, you're putting a lot of pressure on people's shoulders. So I'm going to... It's not a bad choice to have though, is it?

26:03It's not a bad choice, but it's still a choice. Did you ever have a Ferrari? Hmm. thought he did of course he did it's when he had those false dreads in and all that they weren't false they weren't false dreads they weren't false dreads they were real they were real what's happened we're gone fucking hell I'm sorry they weren't real I'm sorry yeah it's because he's got such a thick head of her oh they must have been real he did look at Carlos Valderrama I'm not saying I'm not I weren't going around with dreads in me head he's talking as though he's got some kind of fucking Stephen Gerrard thing going on they weren't glued on It was real hair.

26:39Well, look when it's done. Look when it's done. Anyhow, I'm going to give you some tough decisions, right, like the winners are going to have to make on this competition. I'm going to ask you some of football's toughest questions and see which you pick. You can only sign one for United, Elliot Anderson or Morgan Rodgers. Tough decision. It'd have to be Elliot Anderson for me. Because I love Morgan Rodgers, but he's not going to play instead of Bruno Fernandes as a same position yeah I'd

27:09Nicky:I'd sign both of them however if you've got to sign one which is a question obviously you have to go Anderson because we need a midfielder who's got legs right so you've both gone for Anderson do you yeah alright sign only one for United Erling Arland or Kylian Mbappe

27:29oh that's quite an undone I like that Arland such a tough one Ireland is a goal machine beast Mbappe is a goal machine I know but I'm going to go Mbappe Oh Right Ireland Mbappe Again you can only sign one for United In the prime Maradona Enough said Or Ronaldinho Maradona Maradona That was a quick one for you And would you rather United win the Champions League Or the Premier League This coming season Premier League league get your bread and butter yeah bread and butter done and you could give them the option of England winning the World Cup or Manchester United winning the treble again United winning the treble over England winning the World Cup yes I'd like both of course but there you go you're giving me a choice aren't you I'm giving you the choice yeah alright okay some controversial opinions are there and some bang on their money but don't forget folks you can head over to thatprizeguy.co.uk and enter the draw for your choice between a Lamborghini, a Ferrari or 200 grand cash for just 35 pence.

28:45Climb on. Can we talk about Enrique? Because the two on the bounce know Champions League. He's an interesting character, obviously world-class manager, but done a little bit of research into him. He's got a few quirks and I like this. he likes to walk round barefoot every morning to make him feel at one with the earth no he's won two Champions Leagues back to back it must be working I've heard of this before yeah some people who go to the gym look at that I'm already doing it no but you've got to be on the grass oh it doesn't matter you can't just do it on laminate it's like soiling isn't it it's on the ground soiling it's something like that It's definitely something like that honestly It's got to be on the turf outside on the grass Not the fucking wood Oh so you can't just walk around, wood's natural innit?

29:40It's a thing there No it's plastic Can I just say by the way, these, I've never bought a pair of these that don't do that And you've only got half done

29:49Nicky:Not me sick, them fucking socks They're horrible aren't they? They just give me the ick And you're in your ground, you've got to put your toes And your toes are the connection, not your heels for fuck's sake it's your full foot it's not your full foot it's your full foot toes he actually goes out to training doesn't he takes training what's wrong with that they're not me sick whatever he's doing whatever he's doing whatever he's doing he should keep doing by the way because what he's done with that football and you imagine remember all the big players that have left that football club as well so called superstars and he still goes and changes them and goes again and I think it's more impressive that they've done it than a Real Madrid or a Liverpool or a Man United or Bayern Munich because no disrespect to their league they're not getting challenged every single week still spent a few quid doing it I know that but I'm just saying every week you look at the Premier League or Spanish League they get challenged every week so you can imagine being at the top of their game I just don't see it in France something else he did as well he got rid of a lot of big stars didn't he the rest of them do you know what else he does every day he has three fried eggs and three boiled eggs, sometimes a little bit of veg, the occasional beer.

31:03But every day, on the same plate, three boiled eggs, three fried eggs. What, all at the same time? All at the same time. That's like his dinner. On the same thing. Six eggs. But three are boiled, three are fried. He looks well, doesn't he? Do you know what I mean? He does look well. There might be something in that. But I wonder if he goes hard boiled or sort of semi-tumescent. Do you know what I mean? I think that's like, He's been reading and a lot He's got to be reading books, hasn't he lads? He's been reading Is that medium boil? Yeah, that's like medium boil That's a six minute one I was going to say, what's the number?

31:33Six minutes Six minutes No, six minutes, you might as well do That's like a storm

31:38Nicky:I've got someone bought little small eggs So I'll put it for six minutes, like a bullet Wait a minute You get bigger ones Wait a minute, have you not got a boiled egg machine? A what? A boiled egg machine Whoa, whoa, whoa everyone Exclusive It's called a pan It's called a pan of water No, hang on A proper boiled egg machine So you just get your space for your six eggs You put two cups of water in And it buzzes Your eggs are soft boiled Your eggs are being boiled It's fucking unreal in a minute Jason they're unbelievable Have you never heard of that? Never heard of a boiled egg machine I'm going to bring you one in Hang on are you taking piss?

32:13I'm deadly serious They're unbelievable What happens though if you get a small egg? You just put boiling water in a pan skull That's it They take that into consideration yeah What happened to get them right though?

32:24Nicky:The selecting packs when it's got all different sizes in. Hang on, are you saying there's no water? Take it into consideration. Is there any water in this? You put two, you get a little cup, you get a little cup, so you pull the cup out, fill two cups up to the line, tip it in, you put six eggs in, one egg, two eggs, and it doesn't. Is there a lid on it? Yes. Is it a ninja? So you're steaming it, I can't remember the name. Really, are you? You're steaming your eggs. You're steaming your eggs, you're not really boiling it, are you? You're steaming it. I'm not fucking boiling it, it's got water in it.

32:54Nicky:No, the water's in the bottom, you just said. Yeah, but water's in your pan as well, so... No, but you've been in the mers. You've been in the mers. Yeah, it's surrounding the egg. The first time I'm with you here. Hell no. Yeah, but they're still boiled fucking eggs. No, I'm steamed. We're not called steamed eggs. You're steaming your eggs. I'm not... You're fucking steaming your eggs. You're an egg steamer. Is that not poached then? He's a next steamer. No, but wait a minute. Can you steam an egg? The proof is... Well, he does. No, the proof is, in the voice...

33:20No, poached, you've got to be poached. from the cloud your eggs are boiled they are steamed no boiled are you saying you've got an AI Alexa egg steamer no it's just a fucking egg boiler and the woman says your eggs are now hard boiled soft boiled medium boiled you have an egg whatever it does that speaks yes fuck off no I'm not having it you have to take the piss your eggs are ready no I haven't I haven't to be honest but I like it just you on your own I do like it I believe him this is like are you a talking egg machine no this is like that show innit are you they tell a lie and then you've got to guess whether it's a lie or not it's the easiest thing in the world I'm going that's not a lie that's not a lie it's not a lie alright hang on I'll actually bring some in next week and I'll boil them please can I just oh look there's the tsunami well the woman don't say steam eggs she said your eggs are now soft boiled she's a liar she's a fucking liar she's a liar So hang on, an egg timer, we get that.

34:27No, don't need an egg timer. I've never seen, no egg timers talk to you. It's not an egg timer. It's an egg boiler machine. Where have you got this from? Have you been into the future and brought it back to our times? Have you got a fucking time machine or something? You know what, I've had this for about three years. You've had a talking egg steamer for three years. At least three years. You'd have heard of them. You'd have heard of them. Where did you get it from? it was a present who got it because I love boiled eggs Claire did Claire got it man because she knows I like boiled eggs it's a present because I love boiled eggs it doesn't you don't get more Paul Scholes a statement than that I love boiled eggs oh my god eggs and sausages though is it one of them yeah does it speak mine's that white one there yours but there's all different kinds does it yeah but does it speak so that's not in water

35:18Nicky:that's what I'm saying it's not me in the water Yeah but you're right You're not boiling It's a three in one Egg boiler Steamer Yeah exactly Does it say steamer? No it says boiler Yeah exactly No I know But they're not boiled They're steamed It's not the fucking boiler Why does it say steamer? It says boil It says steamer Who's ever had a steamed It says boiled It says boiled It's a fancy one isn't it If a chef could come on And comment on this You don't need a chef Fucking hell It's a fucking steamer They're on Amazon It's a steamer It's not a fucking steamer I'm not disputing It's called a boiler but it's actually steaming the eggs it's not boiling out it's actually boiled you've got to put it in it you've got to put it in you've got to put it in you've got to put it in it's 30 quid yeah you have them every day it tells you they're steamed anyway it tells me the boiled that's steamed that's getting really care how he does this do you know that's why he doesn't have music on all these appliances are talking to him around the kitchen good morning Paul would you like your toast yes and how would you let your eggs steamed do you know what his house is like three minutes you know Wallace and Gromit it is when the toast comes out and he eats it Are you a gadget, man?

38:44Right, Arna Slaught leaves Liverpool after two years in charge. Two years in charge and one Premier League trophy. 20 losses in all competitions this season. Firstly, were you surprised? Obviously, you've played at a club, you're a Liverpool fan. I actually wasn't surprised. Whether I think it's right or wrong is another probably debate in it. But there was a lot of noise around from the crowd, from certain media outlets, you know, social media and stuff. I think he'd tipped it the other way where he was ready to go for a lot of people. I think the last bit of credit he probably had was up to the Villa game where I thought he lost that with the performance.

39:28So it was always out for debate whether he was going to stay or not. The funny thing is, if you'd have gone the last two seasons, you'd said he finished fifth in his first season and second season he'd won the Premier League, he'd still be a manager, wouldn't he? Yeah. He's actually done it the wrong way around, hasn't he? Yeah. But the style of play, the players he's lost, I feel the winning culture that was in the dressing room has eroded by the players that have come in and left. I mean, there was nine players that left last season. Still a lot of good players there, though, isn't there? Yeah, there is.

39:59He's spent a lot of money as well. But you create something. Klopp had created this culture. He created this environment, this winning mentality. it was running right through the football club from top to bottom and he didn't change much I mean the only player he brought in in his first season was Chiesa who was a squad player but they still had that mentality there was still a lot around that dressing room that were winners he got over the line tweaked it slightly got over the line won the Premier League and then this season he's obviously gone out and spent you know 420 although he did recoup 200 and odd million but when you look at it hard facts which is what we do now data and all this kind of stuff I think he was 24 points off finishing where he did last season and they lost was it 12 in the Premier League?

40:42I think it was 20 in total which is a lot of games for a club like Liverpool to lose especially with the money you've invested you know what I mean he tried to change the full style of it didn't he as well really it didn't it doesn't suit the people in Liverpool no more than anything

40:55Nicky:that's a good point I think Liverpool is one of the few clubs in the world that has it's an institution you can't just go into that football club and change the way of playing to suit you as an individual manager I think Man United's similar same sorry you've got Real Madrid but no these big clubs have a way of playing and you don't need a manager we've said it loads of times haven't we I just think he listen he won the Premier League I mean that's amazing what he's done for that football club however his time was done there if you don't go and give what that fan base wants same at Man United with Amarin same in Madrid when managers go there and get sacked in two minutes Bayern Munich's exactly the same as well you just get moved on and I think they're going to have to really look at the right culture going there, manager culture, whatever you want to call it nowadays, and just go, this is how we play football, this is our fundamentals and you fit into this.

41:45Nicky:Manage it how you want to manage it. You're going to be part of the process of recruitment as well, but you have to buy into the philosophy of Liverpool Football Club, which goes back hundreds of years. It's like you can't go into that football club and change it. It did seem to come a little bit out of the blue, didn't it? I don't think there's been that many rumours about it, really, from the end of the series. It took a little bit of time. I think with Jason probably answer this whether the availability of a Riola coming being touted around a lot of clubs because Richard Hughes who was at Bournemouth who's now at Liverpool he also brought him into Bournemouth so you wonder if you think we can't afford to miss him whether they were in for Alonso or what I don't know it's a funny time as well to think of changing your manager in the sense that there's a World Cup there is a lot of big names out there available some are finishing after the World Cup which is late if you want to start recruitment and building something Areola was rumoured to be having talks with AC Milan that connection with Richard Hughes you know apparently you know you speak to some journalists apparently they were they were going to keep him up until Friday yeah it was only late Friday afternoon I think the decision was made do you think they'll have do you think they've got the margin now that made them sack him because I don't think a big club like Liverpool would just sack somebody and have nobody taking over that football club now with recruitment because recruitment would have I think they'll have somebody down done now, they can't not.

43:07Yeah, I mean, as you know, it's not a spare of the moment. They plan for everything, don't they? If we're going to do it, do we start now? And they start talking. I think Areola is obviously the favourite. My worry about Areola is managing the expectations of that football club. I think, and the same happened with Man United. Listen, when Alex Saragsbergson left and Klopp left, they didn't leave because the club was on its knees. They left when the club was at its peak. which is always a very difficult job for any manager to go into because usually you go in when a manager is sacked and you get the opportunity to build something.

43:41So it's very difficult. Iriola will go in with slightly less expectations from the fans from where we've finished this season and he will be given an opportunity to build something. But it's managing that football club is my concern because the likes of Liverpool and Madrid, like Butty said, it's massive. Do you know what? Certain managers will go to certain clubs and if you look at Amren at United, he just doesn't suit that club. They play a certain way, he plays a certain way and never the twin shall meet. I quite like Areola going to Liverpool. I think he suits that club. Yeah, his style of play is probably more Jürgen Klopp than what it would have been on a slot.

44:20And like the lads were saying, we have got an identity. Slott wanted to go away from that. He was more pragmatic. His personality was completely different than Jürgen's. Jürgen embraced everything. He bought into the culture of the club. the city the fans Shankly who what Liverpool were and delivered you know we had seven years of unbelievable great you know nights and there was disappointments in there but it all was part of the rollercoaster and we'd become you know Liverpool Football Club again where we felt we had the bragging rights over United and we were dining at the top table and you know Arna did go away from that his personality was kind of like I said more pragmatic and how the football reflected that we do need to go back I think rollercoaster is a good word for Liverpool that's what it should be it's almost what United should be really it's 100 miles an hour do you know what I mean and I think of Riola I think he likes to play that style you watch his Bournemouth team they were exciting they were on the front four all the time I think the question for him can he do that three times a week do you think there's

45:17Nicky:any chance whatsoever of Liverpool looking at what Carrick's basically done at United and going for Stevie no no no I I don't think Liverpool want to give Stephen the job because one day they'll have to sack him. One day they'll come a point they'll have to sack the club's biggest ever player. And that doesn't reflect well on decision makers, FSG, whoever it may be. So I think they'd rather keep Stephen where he is. He's a club legend. They both look after each other. He's held in the highest regard. He'd never do anything coach inside, like, you know, as a number two, if you like. Yeah, he might come in at some capacity, but I think Stephen's moved away from maybe academy now.

45:59he'd have to go in as maybe assistant, whether he wants to do that, because he's been a gaffer. I think that'd be a big problem. It'd be a problem for the manager, if Stephen's there waiting. And another name that was in the mix, obviously he's at Chelsea now, is Alonso. Out of Alonso and Areola, if you could pick, who would you choose yourself? I'd go Areola. Right, okay. Style of football. Style of football, yeah. I have big concerns in coaches managing big clubs. you know I think you know what he did this is Yabby when he did it by Leverkusen was unbelievable but he's a coach and he fell foul of a coach at Real Madrid I felt clubs like United Real Madrid Liverpool they don't necessarily need coaching they need managing from a manager you know your coaching staff coach the players Real Madrid especially yeah especially that and I think you know the egos in the dressing room they don't really want to be coached by the manager they want to be looked after by the manager you know and I think it was the wrong fit I think the same for Liverpool I don't think his identity style of play philosophy suited Liverpool a bit like Amory I think you got it wrong because of the identity of who he was it just didn't fit

47:08Nicky:I think it suits him to go to Chelsea though because I think the only time they won the league is a five at the back and he plays that they're a young team as well young players need coaching this is a really random one but I can't believe we've gone from eggs to really serious that's what happens everywhere so Slott's gone now yeah couldn't you see is there a world where you could see a little seller U-turn where he's gone do you know what you manage your it's bad PR that isn't it yeah the club shouldn't work like that if they allow Slott to do that they become a laughingstock yeah they become a laughingstock they become that the player's bigger than the club exactly that's what you give him when Slott comes out and does you know the tweet he did when Slott's still there basically slating him other players have got to be they're liking it and what have you if you're a slot you've got to know then your days are numbered yeah but he's still the manager of the club isn't he and he you know them players liking him I don't know if they're trying to send a message personal message whether they're just looking off yeah but some might do some just like it because they're flicking and they go bang they wouldn't have had an influence on Liverpool no chance making that decision to sack him they wouldn't they wouldn't have gone off that no no no chance It's not a Salah thing, no chance.

48:25No, I... How would Salah feel this morning, do you know what I mean? If you'd know... Not know you've got... But he must have contributed a tiny bit, do you know what I mean? He's contributed to the debate and the arguments, hasn't he? He has contributed to that. Because he sent a message out there, hasn't he? Which they would have looked at and they would have seen. I don't know whether they'd treat it as like, we've got to do it because Salah says. No, but it is amazing. There will be a small part of it. Yeah, it's amazing the power of social media these days, especially around football clubs and that swell on line of negativity or positivity, it does have an effect that.

49:02When you're that big. Yeah. When you're that big. I was disappointed. This amazes me what I'm going to read out now. Michael Carrick... Six eggs. ...is known the second longest serving manager in the big six teams. Wow. How crazy is that? So City, Chelsea, Liverpool, all appointing new managers this summer. do you think we're going to see like a real big refresh in the Premier League different styles of play because obviously everyone copied the pep model and this playing out from the back and keepers using their feet more and everything else you know a lot of new managers coming in are we going to see a little bit of a change of style I don't think styles will be massive well I don't think Michael will change much at United Alonso might be the one who changes Chelsea a little bit but I was saying that Chelsea tried to play off from the back and I had a fucking No plus they weren't they So whether he tries to That I don't know I think one thing about it I think it could be The most open League title race We've ever had Now look One or two teams Do normally Kick on and Go away with it But when you think We haven't got a PSG We haven't got a Bayern We haven't got a Generational team Now City have been that Don't get me wrong Over the last so many years But they're not that anymore So I think it could be I think United will have a chance I think Michael will have a chance if they do some good business there might be rose-tinted spectacles there but Liverpool, you expect them to go again City, obviously they've got a really good team but they're going to have a new manager Arsenal, people are expecting Arsenal now to go on and maybe with this dominating I just don't see that with this team maybe I'm missing something, I don't know I just can't see this team being a PSG or a Bayern I think the fact that they've just won the Premier League next season, there'll be a different team now because they've done it haven't they they've brought the seal Arsenal I can't see it I'm struggling to see a brilliant brilliant team going on for the next four or five years yeah but if he adds if he adds to that now and they've got that winning mentality yeah but I thought that with Liverpool last year how good with Liverpool when they won the league they were brilliant and then they spend 500 million who's going to get near them

51:11Nicky:we sat here and said give Liverpool the Premier League now they just won the league like you said and you're going wow especially after the EZAC side the one good thing about that what you just said was I think younger coaches now are getting chances at big clubs I think it's been a long time coming now you go through all your coaching badges they've all been there and they get to a point where you go well not really getting chances but now they are getting a chance so you look around the club and Artes are probably the old head now in the old Premier League managers so it is good to see the young players getting into it The only thing I'd say against that though is I think for the last 10 years or so we've had the best coach in the world in England I'm not sure we have now when you because Pep's gone obviously we had Ancelotti we had Conte we had Thomas Tuchel we had Jurgen Klopp we had Jose Mourinho yeah do you know yeah there always has to be a shift and the young coach has to come through and they attract the players don't they as well yeah you want to play for them big managers but you're always going to get the players coming to the Premier League you'll always get the players coming to the Premier League you will do because the money's there it's like ridiculous but Scott I get it's a good point Scott he says but for me looking done all your coaching badges gone through all that it's nice to see people getting a chance Michael Alonso he's kind of ex-player getting coaching chances at big clubs same but Brighton he's only young he's still 30 isn't he there has to be a shift at some point doesn't there this is the shift now we'll have to see how good the only way you'll know is how they do in the Premier League but more importantly in the Champions League I think it's brilliant I think competitive balance is needed isn't it in any industry and I think Scolese's right I think it's wide open I don't see Arsenal as a generational talent like the United of the mid 90s or you know a Real Madrid or a Paris this Paris team are talking about I don't think Arsenal are there I think they've been constructed well I think they've recruited well but I don't look at them and think they're going to go on they're still a soft touch for me like the way they played against Paris you know if they were a generational talent they'd go toe to toe with Palace because they fancy themselves the only thing you can't give them credit not the only thing you can give them credit for because they won the Premier League and got to the Champions League final they've done it a different way they've fought the way to it do you know what I mean where in previous years when they finished second and third they've got a good team they play good football and they've really stumbled over the line and done it really defensively which look there's no harm in doing it it's hard to do it now we might be saying in the next couple of years oh Jesus just need to get over the line and bang they were gone I just can't see one thing I will say about Arsenal though is they've done it knowing their strengths and a lot of teams we see over the years try to copy City and they've got a keeper that can't play off the back they've got two centre backs that can't play football yet they get this focus of trying to play like Pep's teams and it becomes a bit like what are you doing?

53:58Nicky:What are you trying to do here? So we've all been well I spoke badly about Arsenal over the last few months but when you look at what they've done they've found their strengths and they've done it and they've won the Premier League Well with that in mind then what you're saying there about this team who do you see next season finishing above Arsenal then? we'll ever do we're all going to if we ever do finish above Arsenal we'll win the league right okay so if there's finish above Arsenal for me if it's a Man United or Chelsea whoever it's going to be they'll win the league because it'll be Arsenal will be second I think Arsenal are the most settled team yeah like they probably have to tweak in the summer they might bring in one or two one or two reinforce the squad but it's there isn't it it's there now they need forward players don't they Jason they need forward players they need forward players because they can't go and play expansive about forward players it'd be interesting to see if they go out and make a statement it'll be like in that area but that's costing you 120 million when you say that I still don't think it'd be a massive surprise in the world if Arsenal finish third or fourth next year quick bit of transfer news chaps Anthony Gordon joins Barcelona for 70 million pounds were you surprised he actually moved to that calibre of club that they came in for him not as surprised as a lot of I think he's got a lot of ability he's still got to prove himself himself I think a big big club I think he's capable I think that league's perfect for him they will hate his physicality his running his power his energy them full backs over there they will not want to play against somebody like him I think he'll end up being a superstar there I don't think he's hit the levels in this country I just think when you go abroad bits like Scott McTominay you go to a club that just fits you I think Barcelona will fit him I think he'll scare the full backs to death over there I think what's interesting about that move you hear stuff over the past few years where Gordon's always spoke about playing for Barcelona like he even when you saw him I'd never heard that till I come here tonight he was laying in Spanish why are you looking like that he's learning his Spanish he's been talking he's been talking to the never spoke about it on Talksport when you're listening to him in the gym the bath the toilet the car I tell you what he couldn't hear it because the fucking egg time he was talking to him by the way though seriously it was impressive you see his interview I mean fair part to him I remember seeing his interview with Gary Neville a couple of years ago and I thought it was impressive he proper dedicated and thinks about the game quite a lot I'll tell you what my first thought was Newcastle I mean there's another one gone East Sack last year that tells you the message and by the way they've supposedly got a massive back in finance back and they just keep selling players they can't spend it can't spend it can they does he stay by the way Eddie O

56:39Nicky:how do you think it affects Rashford I was just getting the Eddie Howe scoop I don't know sorry it's come to my head Eddie Howe or Barcelona what are we doing here Rashford which way we got alright then eggs well let's go Eddie Howe first just as a because no one's his name's been mentioned he'd be the one surprised you wouldn't be surprised if he went would you I think it looks like they're selling his best players under his feet I think it's strained there and I think it would be more Eddie Howe thinking listen you just saw Gordon what am I doing put it this way if he got a sats I don't think he'd be disappointed right ok then and then just what by mutual consent yeah what Nicky just said then Gordon signing for Barcelona what does that mean for Rashford I do not say that because Rashford for me is predominantly a left half side player coming off the left hand side all playing centre forward and that's exactly Gordon is he up is he contract up at United is he he's on loan at Barcelona he's on loan but I think they have I thought they'd have done it hadn't they they've agreed they have a deal in place to buy him don't they but I think they had a deal in place for him to buy him so much but they're trying to get him cheaper.

57:42Right. What are you saying? If they're trying to get him. He's actually being linked with Arsenal. Yeah, that'd be a great move. It'd be a great move for both. Yeah. Would you have him back at United? No. Very rarely happens when a big player like that goes to a big club. Very rarely go back and I don't think they'll want him back. I think for him as well, the area, you know, it's just sometimes get out and go and play your best football and no distractions. I think Arsenal would be a great move for him. For both of them. Really well, remember, Danny. I don't think he'd be short of clubs no no no not at all er lads er like Scolzi's egg steamer the time has got the better of us we're going to have to draw an end to today's podcast thank you as always for did we say tuning in in the modern world stop tuning in steamer you're steaming your eggs Paul leaving at that I'm going to come in next week I'm going to boil them in front of your face did we talk about Soccerhead we're talking about stock grade listen next Monday we're doing a World Cup preview show but please join us next Monday because not only are we doing a World Cup preview we're doing an egg off egg off right we're all bringing in our own technique for doing eggs boiled that's not possible though is it what's not possible well where's he going to put a fucking pan in we can plug your fucking steam it in well I don't know if you've noticed it's possible for me but not for you
