In short
Thessa Azpilicueta discusses Chelsea/England football under Thomas Tuchel, England’s World Cup performance vs DR Congo and upcoming Mexico match, plus his own career stories and “Built Different” segments about dirty players and training.
Guest backgrounds
Thessa Azpilicueta is Chelsea’s most decorated outfield player (Spanish international). He played for Chelsea (and earlier Spanish clubs), and has experience defending against elite attackers like Messi, Ronaldo, and Mbappé. The episode also includes a “Built Different” game featuring ex-players’ red-card stats and a discussion of training under Antonio Conte.
Key claims
England must “get through” knockout games even if performances are ugly; Tuchel’s focus on ball control and counter-pressing can look messy if key “best footballers” aren’t used. A worry is Tuchel saying England “got the press wrong” vs DR Congo. England’s squad selection is criticized as having “square pegs in round holes,” especially right-back choices (Rhys James/Livramento/Chalobah vs Trent). Mexico will be pressured at altitude and in front of home fans.
Notable examples
Chelsea’s 2012 Stamford Bridge “Dave” nickname story; Azpilicueta meeting Sean Connery; DR Congo match described as low-quality but won via Kane and Bellingham; Ramos-style “dirty” player red-card comparisons; Conte’s brutal fitness sessions and pre-season running.

Allerge your doctor right away as difficulty swallowing, speaking, breathing, eye problems, or muscle weakness can be signs of a life-threatening condition. Patients with these conditions before injection are at highest risk. Side effects may include allergic reactions, neck and injection site pain, fatigue, and headache. Allergic reactions can include rash, welts, asthma symptoms, and dizziness. Don't receive Botox if there's a skin infection. Tell your doctor your medical history, muscle or nerve conditions, including ALS Lou Gehrig's disease, myasthenia gravis or Lambert-Eaton syndrome, and medications, including botulinum toxins, as these may increase the risk of serious side effects.

Welcome to the good, the bad and the football, sponsored by Midnight, the betting app that's built differently. No, folks, very special guest today on the podcast. Chelsea's most decorated outfield player of all time. Wow. and a little bit of European flur on the show it's Thessa Afbalaqueta did I get it right oh you see lads
2:27Nicky:thanks for coming on mate thank you welcome the pronunciation is everything Thessa stop spitting everywhere Thessa Thessa what Thessa because a lot of Philistines in the sport world will be saying Caesar or Cesar Like you was five minutes ago. And it's not. No, I just researched a little bit of a chat. I thought, you know, I don't go Nihi Butt, do I? Papal Scoles, like that. I do it around Paul Scoles, Nihi Butt, like that. So I like to get everyone's name absolutely spot on. I had him on the Tuchel thing the other day as well. He said Tuchel. It's Tuchel. Tuchel. Tuchel. Tuchel. Yeah, you see.
3:11Nicky:He's so nice. Oh, here we go. Well, do you know, having said about names, you were actually known as Dave at Chelsea. Who gave you that name and why did that come about? It's a funny story. I was in an audience at the Stamford Bridge. Yes, a few months I arrived into Chelsea and we were Fernando Torres, Oriol, Romeo, Juan Mata and myself, the four Spanish players. So we were doing some Q &A and someone asked if they could call me Dave. My name was Sard and I even I had to to get the help from Juan Mata to you know because I didn't speak English and I didn't understand I said yes you know I'm from there just stay there of all days so did everyone call you that the players?
3:58No players no but the fans the fans that's brilliant yeah you know when you first arrived at Chelsea on a day to day basis throughout your career how many times non-Spanish players did anyone get your name absolutely perfect you go they've got it never I don't remember many one batter was the only one I don't remember many speaking of names and before we get into the football I've seen this the other day Jude Bellingham in an interview said he'd love to play James Bond now firstly iconic Did you ever watch James Bond in Spain when you were growing up? No. It never played in the cinemas over there and translated?
4:46Yeah, yeah, of course. Not your thing? Yeah, I didn't watch, no. But do you like films in general? I just need to check because a colleague at the side of your pocket. Not really, no. Oh, the perfect side of the table. Scott Scholes, he never watches TV. No? No, I do watch TV. No, I do. Football, that's all he was. No films. James Bond, though, I mean, that is, it's all coming back. It's going to be, it's on Amazon, I think. they've bought the rights to it and everyone's like a bit up in the air and they've got who's going to play James Bond next oh is there a new one coming out a new one coming out but it's not going to be the traditional I think it's the Barbara Broccoli do you think you've got a chance I have got a chance yeah once I take the glasses off it's either that or Superman but I think whoever's going to be undertaking the James Bond role a little tip I think leave a longer pause you know the iconic the name's Bond James Bond go on you go the name's Bond
5:46James Bond right that little bit of a gap little bit of tension that's where they're going wrong who's your favourite one I think you've just failed
5:55Nicky:who's your favourite one I can tell you favourite James Bond I'd say it's about the era you used to you first got introduced to James Bond but I used to like a slight little comedy angle so I'd say Roger Moore Sean Connery I mean he's the quintessential just his voice brilliant isn't it I've never watched the film but it's his voice yeah he's cool he's the best Icon don't try it James Bond yeah that's good that's good that's very good Sean Connery he come and sat he come and sat and I didn't we went to London to get an award for the team of the year no sportsman's award me and Ryan went on our own I was going to remind you in the ambassadors remember I remember the manager's mate.
6:38Nicky:Sirius. Yeah, Sid. He used to have a place in London called the Ambassadors Club. Soterious. Soterious, yeah. Sid. We sat there and he come walking, Sean Connery, and I sat down and I was like, wow, it's Sean Connery. Yeah. His voice, unbelievable. Like that, who's your most famous person, non-football, you've ever been in the company of where you've gone? It's them. Yours is Sean Connery. I mean you're not top that's that's big mine Robert De Niro unbelievable raging bull you know Robert De Niro I know you're not a fan of films you two do you know Robert De Niro you're looking at me there as though you didn't know I nearly had to remove you I think you're the big build up and then I was going to eject you from the building who's yours you might have to come back to me I'll have to think about it can't think most famous person you've met but non football related Rafa Nadal oh that's a good one yeah yeah that's a good one great player as well are you watching the middle of the line watch Netflix show what Rafa you watched it no I didn't know that it's good tell you something Netflix are doing it on everyone it's unfair you're struggling no it's subtitles you won't be able to read it is there any need for that whatsoever right before I move on who's your favourite James Bond Sean Connery oh yeah Sean Connery as well yeah I like the voice so you have seen the early James Bond films I've not watched the films but I've seen clips of him and stuff and listened to his voice yeah of course you have I can't remember watching a film no you must have watched one James Bond film you must have done at Christmas or school holidays the boring what James Bond's boring yeah fucking action packed film it's the most action gadget deep ducking lazy you've ever watched it's not very real though that's what exactly it's not very real is it well as a child do you like a bit of fantasy you know he's got a car that goes underwater schoolsy I mean what would you want that's how fucking stupid it is exactly he's not quite getting into the films thing is he that's how stupid it is watch the movie were you writing letters in after you watched Star Wars fucking speed of light travel I don't think so Millennium Falcon he's not seen Star Wars he has seen Star Wars not Star Wars shut up they were Chris weren't they Star Wars oh they're Space Raiders You've seen Star Wars?
9:06Nicky:I've never watched the full film right through, have I? Star Wars? Star Trek? Get onto the football party, he doesn't watch it. Fucking hell, he doesn't watch Captain King. He doesn't watch Star Wars, please help me out here. Just change the subject. Dave, get out. I'm going my way. Right, let's get it back onto football, shall we? Here we go. Right, no. 2-1 England. Everyone's got an opinion on it. Everyone's saying bad team performance, but we got the win, all the rest of it. Firstly, what do you three think of the performance? I think knockout stages, you've got to win the game and get on to the next one.
9:46Nicky:But sooner or later, they're going to have to start playing a bit better or they're going to be out. It's quite simple as that, really. But I think it was always going to be like that against Congo. It was going to be tough, the big, powerful, strong defence, but then they can counter-tap with pace. We didn't particularly play well at all, but the big man steps up again, and that's what you want when you're not playing well. Your star players go and score the goals and get you through. And listen, I was listening to Torxport this morning, you hear what your people talk about. I didn't like watching the game, it wasn't a great game, but they're through, and if Tuchel, what is it, Tuchel?
10:16Nicky:Tuchel. Tuchel. If Tuchel can get through into the final and win it, they won't worry about it. It'd be like the Arsenal scenario, with Arsenal in the lead, where they won it, and they're not sat on holiday now thinking, I wish I'd have won it that way. They've won it. Yeah. So his main job is to get as far as they can, but they've got to start playing a lot better, otherwise they're going to have no chance. What do you think? I thought it was bad. Yeah. I'm a bit... Thomas Tuchel, we brought this German manager, as he is, at big clubs. He's been at big clubs. Borussia Dortmund, PSG. Played brilliant, brilliant football.
10:55Nicky:Chelsea. Yeah, Chelsea. Sorry. I forgot about that bit.
11:01Nicky:but then three clubs especially PSG he played unbelievable football yeah like past teams off the pitch and I feel like Rob it feels like we've made him English a little bit do you know what I mean by that because we brought this German manager to be Thomas Tuchel not to be a bog standard not bog standard but like an English manager but does that does that not he's working with the players he's got obviously when he likes it Chelsea Yeah but he's chose these players he's chose these players that don't and they're not his type of players I don't think he doesn't, I think he wants to play the game the right way and he's left his players with the most flair out of the squad Cole Palmer, brilliant player Phil Foden, okay we've said this all the time and them two probably weren't the best of form in the last six months but you look at the team now they're not playing good football they're playing bad football and he's only picked the two best footballers he's got he's not playing yeah Cobby Mainu and Eze they can make a team play football and he's not playing he's bringing Eze on last 20 minutes Cobby Mainu yeah not made an appearance and he didn't work with Rashford from the start either really did he it's almost like trying too hard no do you know what I think he's gone down when I say about English managers he did a press conference right before the start of the tournament and he said I want us to play like a Premier League team play at Premier League pace we had that for 20, 30 years well no, 10, 15 years four tournaments I went to we had that all the time play at a Premier League pace the other teams won't be able to live with you they can the international game is a different game it's quite slow in the middle of the perching at the back but once it goes to them forward look at France for the night it all quickens up and it's fucking 100 miles an hour then that might become a Premier League game but the full game the entire game you just can't do it because that gives us the mindset I remember Sven Kevin Keegan play at Premier League you won't be able to live with you you play against Spain you play in France against Italy you're running about like fucking idiots and they're just passing the ball around you all day long I don't think we're going to get any better if England look he might surprise you he might go all the way and win it but he's not going to win it in a Thomas Tuchel way he's going to win it in an English way the way it's going now it's going to be very difficult for us to win this tournament Do you watch it today?
13:36No I was just coming here travelling I was going to say when you look at Tuchel are we setting the England team up is there anything you recognise that we set some up to when you were playing under him? You know first of all we were playing different system. Then he arrived to a team that the squad was there, so he tried, you know, he was very clear what the players we were there and just tried to put everyone in the place on, you know, how it works for football. You need to get results as quick as possible. It was end of January. But you know what, I can't, you know, for me the most important thing is to get through in this stage of the World Cup, you know.
14:15I think if when a team plays well, they have 20 chances, they don't score goals, they are out. They don't just, you know, we had experience in Qatar against Morocco. We had like 78 % of the ball. I don't know how many chances. We lost on penalties. We were just flying back home and yeah, we played amazing but we didn't, you know, you didn't get the troll. You know, sometimes I think in this kind of tournament, you just, those games where maybe you are not at your best, they were 1-0 down very early in the game. Strong physically team, they will defend deep, they will counter you, You just need to get a job down.
14:52There was a lot of...
14:53Nicky:Going back to last night, he also said another comment after the game which worried me a little bit. And says I might know a bit more about this. He said, I think we got the press wrong. Which, do you know what that means? Yeah. So he thinks he's got it wrong against them when they're out of possession. Why is he even thinking about being out of possession against Congo? Yeah. And I'm pretty sure at Chelsea, at PSG, he wasn't thinking about being out of possession. So I think coaches, a lot of coaches these days, at Eamon City at League Two level, they're obsessed with getting the press right.
15:25Nicky:And all of a sudden, you forget about what you do with the ball. You forget how good you are, what your strengths are. Yeah, but I think he's very, I think the way he approached the game is out of position. He's very obsessed when the position, when you have in the ball, the counter-pressing position, more than being just in shape and control. I think, I didn't hear his notes, but maybe the way he was speaking was about this because he's very demanding with the ball. He wants people in the right positions, control the ball, diagonal balls. And then when you lose the ball, especially when you are playing against deeper teams that you need to press quick and recover to bring the intensity up.
16:07Nicky:It was just that comment that made me think about the English coach getting the English game, that mentality. We haven't brought him to be an English coach. We brought him because what we've seen... I love him. I think he's brilliant. I love the way he comes across in the media I love what he did at PSG Brushing Dortmund and Chelsea I just don't want him turning into that English mentality where we're always a little bit worried and think about them rather than us You see Anderson how many times he jumped and went late so on the press that's what he's done about Anderson kept jumping and was late and then it opens the midfield right up I just don't I think if we're going to beat Mexico we have to be more expansive do you have to play Kobe or Eze There's no way he's not going to play Kobe man he's going to have players what's he taking him for he should be playing him at some time I don't know do you know what probably the wrong thing to do on Kobe now he's been there for three weeks four weeks whatever it is not played a game all of a sudden he's got to come in I do never know when this can happen no it can happen but it's probably not fair on Kobe if he comes in there can I ask you a question about Tuchel when he announced the England team there's a lot of people saying like Scorsese said then with Cole Palmer and Ford and Trent he's not picked them and I think Ruben Amarin when he was at United was one of the things labelled with him was quite stubborn wouldn't change his mind wouldn't when everyone can clearly see the problems he just he was set in his ways do you think two calls like that as a manager with this squad he selected some of the players weren't popular some people couldn't understand some of the players he left out is he willing to hold his hands up and say I've got that wrong or does he just have a vision and stick to it and never changes?
17:54First of all, right now he got it right because they went through. The first thing, then we will see how it finishes but I've never seen a squad that everybody is happy with the picks the manager gets. In any country in the world I think there are always people who are out and you are not happy but you I think we have to give a bit more time. He's the manager to the squad. You could argue, though, the reason we won yesterday was two great goals by Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham as well. But outside of those two, the team performance, I think that's what people are sort of saying. He's playing deck and race at right.
18:37Nicky:Paddy, he might prove us wrong and go all the way. I hope so. But if he doesn't, it's a really bizarre squad. He's picked, I think. With the right-back situation, he'll tell you more than anything, he's picked Rhys James. We love Rhys James. He's brilliant. But the lad gets injured an awful lot. Livermanto, exactly the same. Jed Spence isn't a right-back. We didn't pick a left-back. He had Lewis Hall. Luke Shaw has probably had his best season. Played Nico O 'Reilly there. Nico O 'Reilly's a central midfield player. I know he's played there for the season for Man City, but it's a little bit easier doing it for Man City when you've got the ball all the time.
19:12Nicky:Yeah. And he hasn't picked a back-up in that area. Now, when Liverpool gets injured, it's a great chance to have a Bringer left back in. Or Trent, I don't know what your feeling is on Trent. And he picked Chalabar. Chalabar, whatever you call it. Again, he's a centre-half that he's thinking about playing. It's just too many square pegs in round. You didn't think of making any sense. Sorry, as a right-back, what did you think about the decision not to take Trent? It's hard to give an opinion from outside but what I can say, I saw in Trent in Real Madrid, in Liverpool when he was in, he was very offensive, he can give us the right foot is unbelievable.
19:58I've never seen a right back with this quality but it's true that when the situation happened with a right back situation but you know there are 26 players in the squad now it's like every time it's getting more and more do you think he should have taken
20:16Nicky:Trent? if he didn't pick him at the beginning maybe he was you know he didn't believe was the right pick at that time I agree who do you see playing there now? for the foreseeable for England now it's like Declan Rice was very good when he went there I'm not sure he'll do that at the start I think that's because we had all of the ball and they're defending deep and when it's offensive and that's why I think Mexico would be the same I think Mexico would come at us I think they're high energy they run like you wouldn't believe do you think it sounds weird this like when you look at DR Congo I know they played like almost them as a country against England pretty much England were the favourites in that game so they could kind of like let loose a little bit if they lose they lose and if they win amazing do you think Mexico weirdly are under a lot of pressure, home country, home stadium.
21:09So their fans will be literally expecting them to win that game. They've not lost a game there in about 30 years. That's what I'm saying.
21:18Nicky:They lost twice in 87 games in World Cup. Yeah, but weirdly, it's a World Cup and the pressure of that. Do you think it can play a little bit on those Mexican players? Listen, England fans, we're all idiots. we sit there and think we're going to win the World Cup every single year every fan they think they're the same but you know we do we know we've not won it we've not won it in 66 so we have no divine right I agree I hope we do win it but however I don't understand why people are making us favourites against Mexico in Mexico City at altitude I don't think we're favourites you just said that no no I'm saying Mexico were the favourites no I was saying Mexico were the favourites I'm saying the pressure's on Mexico because they're the favourites.
22:06Nicky:They will come at us 100 miles an hour and they'll be thinking these can't last with the altitude and the temperature and we've got our fans here. We have to survive for the first half an hour against them. But, you know, everyone talks about the altitude and the heat and everything else, but they've been out there nigh on a month now. Have you done altitude? No, that's 7 ,000 feet above sea level. I once had a session. It's horrible. You must have done that. Yeah. yeah we did it i remember doing it in joannesburg oh yeah joannes burn it pre-season yeah ridiculous buddy you can't breathe remember i know what you mean remember in brazil oh we played in brazil and that when we got out of the effort seriously you can't breathe what we're getting at is you're saying they've been there they're only going in 40 hours before they've got no chance of climatizing they can't they're better off actually i heard the other day that if you meant to go in a few days early maybe four or five days to climb a title or go in very last minute so a bit like a game what you should do in a caribou cup game you go in the morning you sleep yeah sleep play don't don't stay that was the advice for navigating was it gave to thomas too collection you have a goal for four or five days get settled in or just fly in fly and play fly out so what was the decision they're flying i think they're going 48 hours two or two days before yeah yeah but they're saying that you're best off flying him, having the afternoon sleep like you used to have, have pre-match, play and go back.
23:31Nicky:The only way they can get through this game is going to be exactly the same, it's going to be ugly. The lads are talking about defenders though, he didn't really work on defending that much at Chelsea, what is his thoughts like, for you as a right back, what are you thinking during training? I mean I think we were Champions League winners with less goals conceded like and you know comparing to other managers we used to do like more shape and one goes cover behind kind of defending defending crosses so a lot of defending but with with Thomas we never had any training of defending like that which is my which is my point where I think I want the Thomas who's just obsessed with us having the ball no no look at him it was more It was more about all games, control, position, always details, right passes, right speed, a lot of two against one, three against two on the side.
24:31Nicky:Which is exactly what we're not seeing now. The right passes, it's ugly, people are miscontrolling it, they're passing the ball out of play, pass it to the right side of the sort, it's not there. The quality, and then counter pressing was a big part of this game. but if you don't if you don't play the best footballers you've taken the squad this is going to happen it's going to be messy do you think where you just said a few passes go around what have you do you think because it's a World Cup you're really focusing on every single part do you know what I mean like if you watch a game like midweek Premier League game or something and a couple of passes go like you're not really analysing every single because it's a World Cup and it's England and it's Tuchel like we're looking at everything do you know with the national team I don't know it's like at Spain but whenever I played at England you never really get coached you just get put into a system you do a little bit of walkthroughs and then it's just go and play it's expansive go and play football and I think Tuchel's obviously I think he's more of a club manager where you'll know better than me where he's day to day and he coaches you every single day and he trains you to play his way he doesn't have the time to do that with England unless it's always going to be ugly football unless you play your better footballers and he's not playing his better footballers so it's not going to change They say you can tell a lot about a person by the contents of their freezer.

27:08Now it's time for Built Different where we discuss what makes a world-class player different from the rest of us mere mortals powered by our friends at midnight the betting app that's Built Different Today, lads, we're talking about Spanish World Cup winner and master of the dark arts Sergio Ramos Now, what firstly, what makes him Built Different but what's the first word that comes into your head when you think of him. Red card. Yeah, what do you think? Two words, innit? It's two words, innit? When I pull him up, I thought, we've only just started this segment. Let's not start arguing.
27:44Nicky:Mine's a sentence, not a word. A nasty piece of work. There you go. It's alright for him, wasn't it? No! It's alright for him, though, yeah? I'll say nasty. Yeah. Dirty. Dirty, yeah. Nasty, dirty. Vamos. I used to always say that. I always shouted that. One of them ones. No, it's Ramos, wasn't it? I thought it was Ramos. Vamos. no you're thinking of one of the England lads there man awake man awake vamos fuck off also as well say come on yeah yeah you're in England shirt off vamos you say you're in English shirt off so that was you going to say no I was like wrong country it was horrible though wasn't it yeah yeah you know something his career is brilliant player by the way unbelievable unbelievable career player fantastic missed the Real Madrid yeah I mean obviously went to PSG as well so he's played for not only one big club but a few he's a defender that probably he speaks to any centre forward wouldn't want to play against do you know what I mean he's one of them ones and he's always going to get into you always going to beat up to you I reckon it's one I'm at corners that gives you a little I bet he's a brilliant team mate you want him in your team mate even though we all slate him you want him in the team oh yes definitely who was a player like that who you've played with internationally or domestically where you've gone he is one dirty bastard but thank God he's on our team we never really had any in our ear no we never really had any I wasn't dirty I wasn't dirty you were one of the hardest tacklers I've ever seen in my life I wasn't ever I never went into tackle I remember I never tried and do anybody I remember one tackle Newcastle away on Darren Peacock we were only like 18-19 I heard the noise it was just what the fuck was that?
29:32Nicky:I thought there was four legs going to be broke. I've never heard anything like that. I shit myself. What was it? A slider? No, it was just a brilliant 50-50 none of them fouling each other and then just the noise. Yeah. Crack. The crack on shimper. Oh! Honestly, not a leg broken there. Do you know when you do watch football now you go like that and you go up for headers and stuff but when you're playing you don't think about it. No, you don't. It's weird. You don't get hurt. Nowadays you get touched you go, ah, I hurt. Right, okay. What we're going to do here, with Sergio Ramos in mind, we're going to play a game of...
30:05Remember, play your cards, right? Higher, lower. We're doing that, but we're dirty. Dollars do your dealings. Dirty players. In honour of Ramos being the ultimate... I can't say this, what they've put on here. Basically saying about shithousery. I want you to figure out who the dirtiest player is. I'm going to read out a list of players, and all you have to do is tell me if the number of career red cards for club and country is higher or lower than the previous player. Right. Right. Who we're starting with?
30:38Nicky:Kick us off. Probably the only show you've not hosted yet, is it? Is it making a comeback? If it is, you'll be on. Go on. Go on, carry on. To kick us off, who do you think got the most career reds for club and country out of Paul Scholes and Nicky Bolt? Nicky Bolt. well you'd be wrong I've got more red cards than I'm a chance yeah absolutely no way you're on 9 you're on 10 red cards I've got 10 red cards we need to look into that right ok then Paul scores on 10 red cards we're into it higher or lower Stephen Gerrard higher lower lower good game good game lower lower lower it's right dear it's right dear he's low with 8 cards oh Roy Keane higher and lower higher he's right 13 cards fuck I'm not 13 you're putting me off Patrick Vieira higher higher or lower higher lower higher quite a bit higher 17 red cards really that's unbelievable 17 red cards Patrick Vieira and then finally Sergio Ramos higher got to be higher on it what would you say 21 24 more higher 32 lower 28 higher 29 higher 30 31 30 red cards never got one for Spain though or club level that's weird 30 red cards insane that isn't it that's a lot that's a lot of boxing I still don't think I got 9 I want to check it out that's a lot of fines as well a lot of bans That was Built Different, powered by Midnight, the betting app that's built different.

32:40Nicky:Did you play in the final where Sarri tried to take the goalkeeper off and he wouldn't come off? Yeah. What was that like in the dressing room? It was the captain. It was a situation. I remember the time I was playing right back in Wembley, you know how big is the pitch. It was up on the other side, it was like 118, 19. And it was a situation where it was a throw-in for us, so you are there. I was thinking about getting throw-in as far as possible, always trying to snitch. And focus on the penalties because I knew I was going to shoot the penalties. So I didn't have the feeling of the situation.
33:22Oh, you didn't really notice. You know, I was there on the other side. So then everything happened. We lost some penalties. And even I came to the TV to do the media. And I was not aware of what really happened. Yeah, I saw that. It was like for a change. But I felt like sometimes it happens. The player is a bit tight. But then everything is okay. And then when I saw everything, you know, of course. you know you see you try to deal as quick as possible in the dressing room and with the club and with all this and everything what's all but yeah it was what happened in the dressing room after was it quite lively was there a lot of shouting or yeah it was a little bit yeah it was a little bit but you know I think the situation was like this and you know the emotions yeah a lot of people have you two ever been involved
34:13Nicky:in a game or seen that happen which was yours I remember, I was at Newcastle, I remember Lee Bowyer and Kieran Dyer had a fight, the same team mate. Yeah, I do remember. You broke it up, didn't you? I'm playing, I was right in the middle of the pitch and I've seen this commotion and the referee blowing but I've just seen the black and white Newcastle and I run over because I'm thinking that one of our players is fighting one of their players. Yeah, of course. As I'm getting closer and closer, you can see him swinging, it's an embarrassment, you're just going, fuck's right, we're trying to split it up but we already had one man sent off.
34:44Nicky:No, I'm lying. so we got two men sent off so we're down well them two so basically down to nine men you're playing you're getting battered it's a bad playing at the St. James's Park when you're getting beat it's not a good place to play and them two it was so embarrassing soon after the game went absolutely nuts absolutely nuts it's bizarre one of the weirdest things you know it's a tricky situation when Nicky butts the peacekeeper what's going on I don't think no but it was an embarrassment you're playing for your club and two of your lads are fighting with each other and you get something you're just going on i wouldn't like to see grain soon as gone he went i was going to say what did he say to him in front of all the team down yeah and he won't mind me saying it because he said he said it a few times anyway you're not supposed to say about changing rooms but he won't mind me saying it he basically said i'm not going to face the fucking press on my own youtube coming with me so they he made them go to the press with him and wow what about that though like were managers trying to sub someone off and they won't come off have you ever seen that well that's the only time I've ever seen it yeah I've never seen that no imagine imagine doing the gaff and I don't think it happened like after that like he wasn't like dropped or was he off fine was he yeah yeah some fine and he was I think he didn't play for one game and then you know everything did you win the game did you win the game which one the final no we lost on penalties oh you lose on penalties who was he going to bring on who was the keeper Willy Kawaiero yeah Yeah, it was better at penalties.
36:13And we were playing against City, he was playing for City before. So I think it was a reason, but the injury, you know, as a captain on the pitch, you know, you feel like I was too far and I was not aware of the situation. The focus was, you know, as soon as I came to the dressing room, I saw the situation, then you try to deal as quick as possible because you have to take responsibility as well. If you were aware of it on the pitch would you have gone over and said to him come on I would talk to him of course I would talk to him you know I think he had he was not because he was like you know with the injury but he was not and we have seen keepers sub off in the last minute because of penalties but if someone can if he's spoken before I think everybody understands the situation and you can it happened with Mendy and Kepa in the Super Cup in 2021 against Villarreal Mendy got off Kepa came in And we won the Penalty shootout But that was something He was prepared He was ready And Mendy was I'm sure he was not happy It's interesting As outfield players You have your specialists On free kicks And as goalkeeper You'll have your Penalty specialists You have some Of course you do Conte Obviously he's a great manager But Is training Supposed to be brutal Like Fitness side of things What kind of sessions that he put you through?
37:39Yeah, he was tough. He was someone who was very demanding physically. He wanted his team to run, to run more than the opposition. He was believing always in the last 20, 25 minutes you could win the game. And when he arrived, you could feel that. He received a lot of fitness training, strength and conditioning, so he brought his whole team. Very Italian. Yeah, but because, for example, For example, we had the strength coach who was Spanish Julio, who was more functional in the gym, not weights, so very functional, maybe sometimes weird exercises. And we had Paolo who was more running, boring, and he was very demanding.
38:28So he was part of his training. In the middle of the week, he would split sometimes defenders on one side and midfielders and strikers and the other you just do physical work do you know that the training even though it was
38:42Nicky:very hard as you say I bet you felt good yeah everybody was knowing you got the edge physically on the over team you feel training's going to be hard yeah when we get to the weekend I feel great I bet you did Scott and Tommy said that I spoke to Scott and Tommy about when he was out he said the training is the hardest thing he's ever done but when it comes to a game he feels so good yeah really good and they won the league because of that they won the league because of the power He won with Inter, he won everywhere he went. What's he like with players? He looks like he doesn't even want to speak to a player.
39:14Nicky:He's focused on football. The only I see how Spurs came to an end, he was just not having it at all. He's like, that's that. He's obsessed with football, with his team, he wants to win, he hates losing. every time we won the Premier League we're winning like every game his brother his analyst he was already on the coach just preparing he's like come on please have a break we had the review after the game full game like with everything the way we trained it was detailed detailed well that's what sets the sort of great managers aside from everyone else I think all the new that era one not like Sir Alex's and the older ones but that era they're all obsessive with football you hear stories about Pep running off the training pitch going doing his tactics balls on his own it's like get something in the head and they're gone obsessive just for you three as ex-players when we're talking about Conti's the brutal sessions and like physically being fit what was the thing where you go oh we're not doing that today what was the one thing you hated in training where you're like that is brutal pre-season I hate pre-season we used to do go on give us give us something the idea you're doing 10 400 meter runs in the afternoon after you so you work one rest one so if it takes you 400 meters it's like a minute a minute and 10 seconds so you do minute and 10 for your 400 minute and 10 off 10 times disgusting but we'd do it when we first started getting into the team as well we had no dietician or nothing so you'd have like cheese pie chips and beans at 12 o 'clock and you'd be out half past 1 but your legs you can't move your legs you're like walking so it's horrendous I used to wait it what was yours what you didn't like wow sometimes it was just running after training it was just to get your head right like to suffer it's just comfort zone yeah like and comfort zone just feel it and yeah it gets tough do you remember do you remember the 12 minute run as well yeah 3km in 12 minutes yeah ok now that's some going I used to get lapped my sons on pre-season now on sports in before and I said you didn't run he said no no it's just all technical work we used to get we didn't touch your football boots for two weeks just trainers that was in the past yeah I remember non-stop my first pre-season they were like that boots were you used to walk out with your boots no you don't need them did you ever do any old school stuff like the fart licking or anything like that yeah we did that with kid and you always have that person at front who's like fitter than everyone so you're going slow it down a bit and there's just going for it yeah who was the fittest you played with do you know who was at the front the very first Peter Schmeichel yeah really no that's how bad everyone was that's how bad we had a good summer though Bex was always Bex Gary Nebel good runner who was the fittest player you ever played with he must have been one of the fittest he's one of the fittest yeah you must have been up there I had to I had to do you feel that extra thing when you're a captain as well you think I've got to be able to show everyone I can outplay everyone outrun everyone yeah definitely you have to show by example yeah you know we had Steve Bruce he put about two stone on in the pre-season trying to lose some weight Simeone he's big into his horoscopes quite superstitious Did he ever do anything during the games or did he do anything during training where he's like, oh, this doesn't feel right, lads.
43:04I've looked at my horoscope and it's not working out today. He is very superstitious. Yeah, but I never knew about the horoscopes.
43:14Nicky:Really? Yeah. I watched a programme, I think it's called The Boss with Patrice Evry, remember, in the 2010 World Cup. I've got to watch this. Where it kicked off. Yeah. And Dominic was big into horoscopes and he actually says, I've got seven Scorpios in the team. I need to get rid of them. Oh, God. He got rid of five of them and ended up with two of them. When I was a young kid, it used to be... It's a good programme. It's really good. It used to be Mystic Megs, remember? Yeah, Mystic Megs back in the day. And then Russell Grant did a bit. Russell Grant, yeah. But is there something... Because I used to think, I can't be anything...
43:50Because not every single person unless he's reading that same thing and that's them, that same horoscope.
43:54Nicky:right but what is your star sign Aquarius what are you Scorpio I want to play for France okay no chance what's your star sign Virgo Virgo I'm a Leo I feel as though there is something a little bit in the personalities thing I don't know what mine is though I don't know is it Aquarius that's the water carrier that's the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the Leo's like is it your birthday soon Leo August I don't know how do you know that I think my son's a Leo he's July yeah well my yeah my kids it's the birthday funnily enough today but they're just before I think I think cancer there but Leo is the cancer's June cancer's now yeah yeah and it goes into the beginning they might just be Leos I can't think I'm not big on horoscopes but Leo is known as the king of the zodiac the king just put it out there is that a lion it's not all my words that's the words of Mystic Meg is he a lion is that what that is a lion a lion yeah yeah I think it's all bullshit me yeah Mystic Meg must have been full of shit as well the Chinese Chinese one's a bit better though isn't it that's a bit more the Chinese is there's more there's ox am I right ox it's years it's not horoscopes it's the year he born well you play football you're supposed to be fucking culture you've been all over the world I'm asking you questions you're all looking at me going well they're not horoscopes I feel like there's a year you're born, like rear the rat, rear the dog rabbit.
45:27Right, I might be wrong here, and I might be going down a bit of a rabbit hole, but I'm sure Chinese alphabet, more letters. More letters. Don't call it orange. You didn't say that, though, did you? You just said more horoscopes. No, I'm building into it. Jesus. Right, there's more letters, and I think there's more horoscope animals or things. No, that's a year in your barn.
45:50Nicky:Why are you speaking as if I'm deaf? horoscopes more Chinese I can lip read I can go off today to your life happy, this is my life this is it I'm just trying to help you out here, it's not horoscopes it's your year of born, the Chinese calendar is your year you're born isn't it they might have horoscopes as well but the big thing is you're supposed to know what you're born mods, is there more Chinese horoscope things than Is there more Chinese letters more than anything? There is more Chinese letters definitely What do you think Chinese does not have an alphabet? Fucking hell They must have an alphabet How can you have a language without an alphabet?
46:32There's got to be letters They've got more Do you know what? Why do I ask them questions or words? They've got more letters They've got a fucking alphabet They've got a fucking alphabet They must have letters You can't have a language without letters You've got to have letters I think there's 12 of each so there's 12 animals but in the Chinese
46:52Nicky:the animals are the year you're born though isn't it it's nothing to do with horoscopes the year you're born isn't it yeah so you've got no alphabet you've got no fucking horoscopes no no but the 12 animals what I'm saying is in our horoscopes like you I'm a rabbit you've got the scales haven't you I'm a rabbit fucking hell he does make a bit of a buzz right off the top of the head fucking that's why I get paid the small bucks what I'm saying is in our horoscopes like Gemini it's just a symbol do you know what I mean I think they're all animals no they're not is it not I keep telling you you're not fucking listening to me well go on then what whenever you're born the year we'll get back to football so if you're a certain year I was born 1975 that was the year the rabbit so that's they don't have horoscopes so you were born when when was you born how do you know 1975's the year of the rabbit Google it Fucking hell What kind of stuff He googles Horoscopes and biscuits That's his life I'm right 100 % right Right Go on then You were born in 75 So you're the year What am I 73 Year of the twat No need for that Rat You'd be a rat won't you No Please don't be that Did they do horoscopes in Spain Ox Ox lads Year of the ox it's funny how you said Ox before what's him 74 fucking hell 89 fucking 89 snake snake cobra there you go we've cleared all that up haven't we let's talk about some of the players you've had to defend against Messi Ronaldo So Mbappe, when you're on the pitch, just out of those three alone...
48:49Was you wishing you were going and playing in F3? Yeah. Who would you pick out of those to go, I can probably do the best against them, and who would you pick going, it's a disaster? Could be a disaster with all of this.
49:07Nicky:You probably had good practice with Hazard every day. Yeah, I had a good practice with him. But training was sometimes easy. Yeah, it was a combination. It was not easy. But first of all you think, let's see if they don't have a good day. You wish. You try, the three have different qualities. Messi with the ball, passes he sees, Cristiano the way in the box. Yeah. You know Mbappé is so fast, he moves his feet. We are seeing now in the World Cup. Incredible. He's from zero, he just goes right length, he shoots. So yeah, defending. In the Premier League you face tough wingers I think here and in Goumbad.
49:55Yeah, Ryan Giggs. So many players, sometimes when they ask me who is your toughest opponent, sometimes I don't know, some players are not big names, but in that day you struggle. You cannot handle physically.
50:14Nicky:Can you name anybody? I don't remember. Rashford? He was one that was tough. It's true that they had, as you said, in Chelsea sometimes we speak about Hazard as a winger. training he was not 100 % but when he was on his day you know you try to kick him you could never get near him right left the way he turned but the wingers we had in Chelsea different players maybe at the time Mata, Oscar more number 10s then those players they a bit shifted and William we don't speak a lot so sharp Pedro Yeah, Pedro is in front of goal, right, left. So quick. So, you know, it's like kind of the wingers back in the days, maybe there were more wingers on the natural side, more one against one, just get the cross.
51:13I think that's easier to play against. Which is what we need for England. I think you can deal in a better way because you try, so the winger is facing you. you know he's going to try to go outside and the defending sometimes more like one-twos or more running in the space. As a fullback you have to be more aware of the space.
51:35Nicky:When you play left-back, because a lot of wingers come inside though, was it easier at left-back because you're right-footed? Because they come into your strong side? Yeah. That was easier. I felt easier because it's your strong side you can move towards your side more naturally. Even for the clearance, sometimes right foot. I was lucky when I was playing left back, JT was left center back. So he was always on me. That's the experience you learn when you are growing up. Always talking to you. Right, lads, this week, that prize guy have got a massive draw.
53:41you could become a millionaire for just 30 pence. Head over to thatprizeguy.co.uk for your chance to win a million pounds for just 30 pence. Now then, little quiz for you lads. Let's cross my legs, why not? I've got 10 Premier League transfers of all time. So this is price-wise, but we're adjusting it for inflation, right? So for example, Wayne Rooney joined Manchester United in 2004 for 25.6 million. But adjusted with inflation, that now would be 140.2 million. Would it really? We're going to go five to one. I will give you a few little clues to get us going. So your first one, Liverpool and Chelsea.
54:28Torres. Yeah. So originally... About 50 million, was it? 50 million, correct. Today's market, 157.8 million. A lot of money. What year was that? What years were they? That was 11-12 season. Right, number four. Who do you think after that? Rio. No, go a little bit further back.
54:53Nicky:Alan Shearer. No,
54:59Forrest.
55:00Nicky:Stan Collymore? Yes. Stan Collymore, Forrest to Liverpool, 95-96. 8.5 million adjusted to today what would you say so this is 1995-96 8.5 million what would you say that is now it's not 120 million no it's not more so this is number 4 it's more 140 million no it's got to be less than 150 isn't it more than that are we going 5 so it's higher than Torres yeah because we're going 5 to 1 Jesus Christ it's fucking unbelievable yeah of course 162 million no 180 a bit lower 176.8 million who's worked this out from 8.5 by the way when he signed he was in Iron App when I was there and he was in a bar called a nightclub called a cool bar with a pair of Liverpool shorts on honestly no way so he already knew it happened happening Alan Shearer's got to be on that list hasn't he yeah but ain't mad that where he had the Liverpool shot you look at the world now with social media that would be outrageous he'd get hammered then no one give a toss right third place one of your former teammates Roy Keane nope Argentinian Swam Verón correct Lazio to United all won all two 28.1 million today's market 194 million less 184 million less what year was that again?
56:42Nicky:0-1-0-2 180 million no less 174 million 178.5 million in today's market right we're getting into the big bucks now number two probably Shearer Shearer's number one I reckon 15 million maybe not Shearer Shearer's number one number two again got to be Rio Rio great show Nicky so 0-2-0-3 33.3 million leads to United what's that in today's market 200 million not far off 198 198.5 million what and by the way a defender and a good signing bit of a bargain what he did for Man United. Yep. Can't argue with that. Do you reckon there's going to be a billion pound football one day? There probably already is.
57:40Like when you look at image rights and what they get paid and everything.
57:43Nicky:You better buy somebody for a billion pound. Only if Saudi keep going forward with the league and stuff and dump forward. Do you remember when Rodney Marshall and Skyler... Yeah,£100 ,000 a week player. There'll never be one. If there is, what did he say? He said something to do. He said there will be. What did he say there will be? Yeah, and everyone's like, what the fuck are you on about? I don't think they'll ever be a billion pound player. Not unless something mad happens in 20 years' time. This is crazy, though, isn't it? No, I know. You were right. So, number one, you called it right from the get-go, is Alan Shearer, Blackburn to Newcastle.
58:1415 million. 96, 97, 15 million. What's that in today's market? 210 million. Are you? 250. Fuck you. What? 230.
58:26236.9 million. Jesus. I told you, it's going stupid. That's insane, isn't it? Do you know what I think will stop it a little bit? When you look at boxing and the Saudi involvement, now, I like seeing some of these fights they make because you'd have never seen them, but they're making them purely because of the money. But weirdly, no, it's gone a bit, it's a bit weird. It's just all mad fights now and you're not seeing, no one's asked about belts as much.
58:56Nicky:It's more money. they're fighting for money when it's 10 years too late like Fury Joshua does anybody want to watch that now I do I do yeah but it should have been 10 years no it should have been and that's my point it's only now because of the money 10 years ago if the Saudis had been involved we'd have probably seen that far but I don't think they're going to be able to for all the financial fair plays how do you get that back remember to get yourself over to that prizeguy.co.uk for your chance to become a millionaire for just 30 pence Tottenham's off the press Tonyali who? Tonyali? Tonyali who's that?
59:32Tonyali Tonyali Tonyali I did alright at the beginning though didn't I? to Spurs for£100 million he's called his favourite player what do we think?
59:44Nicky:I think he's a great player now you can't look at fees you look at Anderson it's just wrong but Tonyali is a very good footballer I think and he's not so much of a risk he's obviously been with Newcastle. He's done the Premier League, he knows what it's all about. I think the big thing goes he wants to play for the manager, the Italian manager at Tottenham. Daniel Levy, what he's done in his time at Spurs being quite frugal with things is actually now in a great position because now they've got pots of cash to spend and they've no restrictions, have they? They can just go for it. Yeah, I think it's all them PSR rules, isn't it?
1:00:20Nicky:He's the clear of that. They're in a really good position which you've shown. they spent 200 million quid this week on two I don't know much about Fernandez I haven't seen a lot of him but I really liked Anala it's a big concern for me United they've got a top manager as well I think he's brilliant what are United doing? don't buy anybody are they? there must be something going on behind the scenes but they've probably got one midfield player in Kobe minor they've got Champions League to play they've got to start doing some business pretty soon there's got to be There's something going on on the Beyonce's.
1:00:54You would have thought. They probably need three midfield players. Who do you think? Because like you say, that Anderson City move, that's like out there and what have you. But United, like, the fans are going to be looking at who are signing. They're going to have to go
1:01:06Nicky:for Frenzel. How do you say his name? Chumainer. They'll have to go for him. And I think that's why it's quiet because a lot of World Cup stuff goes on. I think he struggled, mate. I think he struggled for Real Madrid last year. I don't think he's been great in the World Cup so far as well. I think he's powerful, mate. I like that kind of player for United at the minute that's what they're missing for me somebody can go box to box and powerful they've got Cobb they've got Bruno they've just missed that athleticism aggression power and pace in midfield Scorsese obviously doesn't like him that much but I think I don't like that type of player yeah I know but we need someone like that I think to break up play who else is going to do that I know you need that but you also need somebody who's going to be able to pass the ball up the pitch but have they got that with Bruno and Cobb Bruno's a number I think Cobb can do it, yeah, but I still think every midfield player should be able to progress the ball from the defence to the forwards.
1:01:55Nicky:I agree with that. I don't think he does that enough. I don't think Declan Rice does that enough. Did I dream of it? I don't think Kaysido at Chelsea does it enough either. Is Bruno staying at United? Have I dreamt that? Yeah, he's staying. He's not moving on anymore. All right, okay then. Another one I heard today, and this isn't confirmed yet, but I like it. Klopp to take over Germany. I think that's a perfect fit, isn't it? German coach. Yeah, it seems like a natural progression, a natural job for him, but I don't know if Nagelsmann's going, is he? I think he said he's staying. Just a little room back in the rooms.
1:02:34Nicky:I think the German director of football as well, is it Rudy Voller? He actually said he's going to stay as well. It wouldn't be the biggest shock in the world. Would Klopp do that? I don't know, because I don't think it's the best crop of German players we've ever seen. I'd love to see Klopp back in the Premier League. Oh, I would. But he's got value. Great. He looks to me like a manager that he'd like to play for. Thaser. Thaser. Thaser. Thaser. Thaser. See, I'm getting it right. Fucking Thaser. Thaser. I'm getting it right, lads. You're trying. You're trying. I am trying. And I'm just saying, the man himself said it's right.
