6:36Should I drink before I came here? Well, we're talking about superstitions and supernatural. Emmanuel, it says a spiritualist once gave you some advice to help you avoid injuries. They told you to sacrifice a cow. Yeah. You didn't do that. No. And then six months later, you got a knee injury that ended your career. Is there something in there? That was after the World Cup in Asia in 2002. Is it a superstition or premonition? Something like that? Superstition. Superstition. Well, he's a friend of mine, you know, he used to sell watches on the beach, you know. Yeah. He's from Senegal. And he said, I was looking for you for weeks and weeks.
7:21I have to talk to you. And so he explained to me that back in his country, some people told him that I had to do something, you know, because I had a curse. So he said, if you want to break this, if you have to protect yourself, you have to do this, this, this, this, this. And I said, there is no way I'm going to kill an animal. So that's your superstition. You know, I respect that, you know, in your country. But I'm from France. I'm French. I have no superstitions. And since then, I have superstition. And so I didn't do anything. Six months later, I had to stop my career. Wow. He said that comes from some of your teammates that were really jealous about you.
8:05At which club? Arsenal? Chelsea? No, with the national team. With the national team? Yeah, it's the World Cup. Do you know whether you got the bad injury? Yeah. Looking back, would you have done it? Honestly, I was very surprised and I started to believe in things I never believed before. yeah so is it a coincidence or is it because I started to have pain you know in my knee a week before that so I have no idea how old was that isn't it I had to stop in 2003 I'm 33 years old I think what they've done the give you too big of an animal I mean slaughtering a cow that's horrific you know how would you do it if it had said give a chicken a quick squeeze you'd have gone with that still an animal no I know but I'm not killing him can we just break his neck no no not like that it's strange about
9:00Nicky:how people believe in something and yeah I'm superstitious like that but in British you just go forget about his me too but then you look back on something from six months earlier and you think fuck I could have just maybe thought about it more you never had a premonition in your life because I had one when I was 10, 11 years old and I did say it you know When I started my career, when I was 17, I make some interviews and I sell it. And a couple of years after that, France organized, was about to organize, you know, the World Cup in 1998. And I said my premonition when I was 11 years old. I remember I was playing, you know, in the backyard with my brothers and my friends.
9:45And all of a sudden I stopped and I had images, you know, straight. So I thought, you know, when you are 11, you don't... So what I was dreaming about was France winning the World Cup. And they were winning the final against Brazil 2-0. Wow. And that was half-time score, wasn't it, 2-0? Yeah, so I said it at the start of my career. Did you see your goal, though? No. This is something, you know, interesting, because during the game, I had to drop back, you know, as a central defender after Marcel was sent off. I started, you know, as in midfield and I remember, you know, screaming to Frank Leboeuf, five minutes to go, you know, we are leading the score 2-0 and, you know, because of the noise, you know, in the stadium, I was screaming at him and he looked at me and said, what, what, what, I said, my premonition is coming through, you know.
10:50And he said, what are you talking about? Shut up. We still have a game to play where it's not over yet. So can you imagine what I felt? After that, you know, five minutes after that, you know, the counterattack, the corner. Christophe Dugary gave the ball to Patrick, and Patrick gave me the ball, and I scored. Wow. I never talked about that for years and years. I said it a couple of times Ben you know when you talk like this people look at you and think does he smoke does he smoke smoking weed it is true have you ever walked into a room and you think I've been here before I've done that I get a lot of that Deja Vu Deja Vu it's something in that that must be French Deja Vu I like that keeping it on the side right he's clever He knows his French He did French at school Great answer Give us a couple of sentences I have a question for you Do you speak another language or only English?

13:13How long till you sort of, because obviously you were playing in the Premier League, did you learn English before you came over or did you sort of pick it up as you went along? At school, yeah. I realised that I was able to have a conversation with somebody in English when, I remember very well, that was a couple of days after Lady Diana died. Oh, right. It was end of August, beginning of September. I remember I had to book a flight with EasyJet on the phone. And when you don't talk the language on the phone, sometimes it's easy when you face someone. You can move your hands, the expression of your face.
13:57And after a couple of minutes, I did the booking and I thought, I speak English? But I still make mistakes. And sometimes it's hard for me to understand. When you have a strong accent, just like... Was you playing in England then? Was you playing in England at that time? Yeah. What year was that?
14:19Nicky:Do you know what I find amazing about that story? Is obviously the player that he was, and he's booking his own flights to come to England from EasyJet. Nowadays, they're playing on a private jet. It's brilliant, that. Do you know, as a European player, when you talk about languages, When you look at Anthony Gordon the other week, for Barcelona, he did his interview in Spanish. I was impressed. Very good. But as a European player, when you're young and you're thinking about maybe going to the Premier League, is it in you as players to go, I've got to learn English just in case? You have to. I know it's quite difficult for players when they come in France because French language is very difficult even for French people.
15:06But you have to. You have to adapt yourself to the traditions, to the language, to the culture, to everything, you know. You know, I'm so tired of players, you know. It was the case, you know, back in days, but it's even more present right now. Players, they don't care, you know. They change country. I don't care. I won't make any effort, you know, to speak or to understand your country or tradition. If you don't like it, just fucking leave it. I think Gareth Bale was like that, wasn't he? Didn't learn Spanish? I don't think. He must know Spanish. I don't get it. He'll know a little bit what I thought, but I don't think he wanted to.
15:44Especially with football,
15:45Nicky:you've got a lot of downtime. If I went to Spain or France, I would definitely try and speak the language because you've got so much time on your hands at downtime. You can take two hours per day with a tutor. It would be easy, but you should naturally do that anyway. When you live in the country as well, I always think you pick the language up better if you live there anyhow. So there's no excuses there. If you could speak any other language, what would you pick? Spanish. I'd go Spanish, I think. Yeah, I think Spanish. A lot of people around the world speak Spanish. A lot of Spanish. Do you speak Spanish as well?
16:15Because you've obviously played in Barcelona, didn't you? Yeah. But not for long. I forget, you know. But, you know, French, Spanish and Italian are quite close.
16:22Nicky:Yeah. Similar. Yeah. How old was you when you come to Arsenal, Manuel? I was 27. Yeah. You know, because of the Bosman rules, you know. Yeah. It was quite difficult to leave the country. Have any of us got World Cup fever yet? Are you feeling it? Are you excited? I watched the game last night, Holland versus Japan. It's the first time I thought it's a good game. I've not seen a good game yet. The second half? The second half, yeah. But the first half was terrible. Same with Brazil and Morocco. Brazil, first half, terrible. But I think when you see someone like Japan, we were talking before with Scolese, I would hate to play against Japan because they are just like non-stop.
17:08Nicky:Very organized. I think they'll be a dark horse. I just remember in the World Cup in Asia we played against Korea. Oh yeah, I remember. Same. Like playing against an army team. But yeah, I don't think it's really got going yet. I'm thinking that maybe because of England haven't started, maybe once your own country starts, then maybe you get a little bit more. The environment as well, you know? When you organise a World Cup, you know, you can feel it, you know, in the street, at the airport, everywhere, and I don't feel it, you know, when I watch TV. No. It's a funny one, this. Weirdly, because I was in Turkey and I was there for the Turkey game, like, it got me more into it seeing all the Turkish fans out in the morning, watching it and getting into it, which, by the way, I don't know, I thought they were going to absolutely blow Australia away, by the way.
17:59but it just shows you in a World Cup anything can happen
18:02Nicky:always in the first games it takes people time to get into the tournament and I think the big teams like Brazil I'd say and all the bigger teams they will take time to come into I think obviously the Scotland game looking at the shirt there they've got way of murder playing there for the team they played for the first game Scotland were bad yeah they were bad as well but if you think you can get a win or a draw in your first game especially now because is it 8 teams in third places can go through yeah the best ones it's more hard than not to go through now you probably need 4 points to get through so Scotland are going to have to draw against either Brazil or Morocco which won't be easy you can go through in third can't you eight teams eight the best teams is there is it too many of that what do you think Manu about too many teams in it now I'm happy with that you know because I think gives teams a chance yeah to develop themselves too but the level of it you know sometimes for example yesterday Germany I think we're going to see that a little bit more often.
19:04But don't forget that there are many, many players. It's the first big, big tournament for them. So in terms of emotions, it's very difficult the first game. If you're a team where you look at someone like Cape Verde, they're probably thinking, well, we're there to make up the numbers. But is that actually a bit more, you can have fun, you can you know just no one's expecting you to win so you can have a real good team yeah I think so I think that was a bit like Coruscant last night yeah there was like yeah because it was 1-1 wasn't it yeah they did great they scored a goal yeah that's a victory for them
19:40Nicky:it's like Manuel said if you can go to a World Cup and represent your country that's all you want to do as a boy that big so they should be able to have that opportunity as well I think in Europe as well you get a bit a bit snobby by saying they shouldn't be in the World Cup but they should be they're representing the country and they can they can always sit there So Tahith Chong played for... Yeah. And he was at United when I was working there. Great lad, great young player. He can now say he's played in the World Cup, but not many people can say that. Study and play. Just as we were talking about the World Cup, I've got to ask you, just as a fan, you know, you're in the dressing room, you're 2-0 up and it's a World Cup final. 40:48Usually we used to come back in a dressing room, silence, recover, legs up, you know, water seems like this, you know, but no talk at all. But it was, they were very exciting. All of a sudden, Amy smashed the table like this and said, shut up! We are just at the hard time. We have not won anything at all yet. So you have to concentrate because they're going to come back stronger on the pitch with the feeling of revenge. So we had to be very careful. So that was the first time, but you can imagine the excitement surrounding the dressing room. Yeah, so he just had to try and calm his down a little bit.

42:43Nicky:There was eight of us sat there having breakfast together and then there were two or three sat there. It wasn't a thing that we did naturally. Sorry, on purpose. It just came natural. I go to breakfast, I'd sit next to my friend from when I was eight years of age so I think when looking at the France team they look like a real, real team do you think that the identity of clubs is more important than the national team? I think because the Premier League was then I think the Premier League was a lot still or not? I think Gareth Southgate changed it I still don't get it you know the question no? why were we so bad?
43:20I mean look at the players you had you know back in the days some of the greatest you know in English history I don't know I don't know if we were though because people talk say we had a good team but you had great players yeah but so did you probably better than us Spain had great players probably better than us Italy had great players camaraderie oh they definitely had better team spirit yeah
43:45Nicky:the rivalry was too much for us if you look at if you look at the Premier League when we was there when we was playing and we'd go one morning to like I said before there was eight Man United lads in that squad so for me that's too many because then straight away the eight stay together and you then start going like that and there's three or four there there's eight here, there's Arsenal boys there I never felt and again it wasn't a purpose thing because I was Sol, one of my best mates we played when I was 14 together Robbie Fowler, friends from England at school boys on the way up I liked all the boys but we just had never had that togetherness and I do think the managers were at fault with that because what they should have done was said right we got us all together get the more bigger player and say well we need some unity because we're not going to win nothing together if you don't get it sorted out but I also think back then the Premier League and it was such a rivalry like Arsenal was the best team I've played against ever like you play against Manuel and Patrick they could outrun you out fight you out play you they were a phenomenal team I mean you talk about Zidane or Ronaldo they're the best individuals but the best team the best partnership him and Patrick Martin Keown Tony Adams it was phenomenal so it was such a rivalry in the league that we was always very much and we was brought up like this we was brought up but funnily enough though we always got on well with our Arsenal players the English Arsenal players Tony Adams when I first got into the squad Tony Adams was brilliant Ian Wright but we got brought up with a mentality from Ferguson that we are it's like we hated everyone we ate everybody it's it's an island we are everybody's against us the referees against us Arsene Wenger's against us he's against us we are an island no one gets on this island and it got into your mind didn't it?
45:35Nicky:you worked! yeah for the national team yeah and that was that's a big thing I noticed I recognized with the French team I always thought is weird and it's a it was a bad thing for us to think like this but it's always brought up I always think why are you talking to them but not we're not we're not playing against them but then you see the French lads all going like this at Arsenal Man United we'd walk it away like that yeah it's wrong it's so wrong it's funny what you say because it's it happened you know during the final against Brazil yeah especially in the second half we saw so many Brazilian guys you know they were shouting like themselves you know fighting you know some insults sometimes you know and it and we knew that our targets one of the priorities are done into this game was uh try to upset them the most and they will become individual on the beach not a team anymore yeah and this is exactly what happened in the summer how did sorry because about the patrick vieira partnership how did that happen because as nicky said patrick yeah yeah because obviously come together, you were unbelievable.
46:43When I think of the great Arsenal team, I think a lot of people will think Adams, Keown, Thierry Henry and Robert Perez. I always think Vieira Petit. It was brilliant. It's funny because I spoke so many times with Patrick and every time we had to play against Manchester United, people used to talk about the battle, the rivality between Ro Keane and Patrick. But we were agree on one thing. There were so many great players back in the days at Manchester United, but there were two players in particular that we had to keep an eye on them all the time, just like the milk on the fire, you know?
47:33Nicky:That's a good saying. Because that was you and Giggs. thank you because Norm I always say that you are probably one of the toughest midfield players to play against because you used to do you were able to do anything you wanted on the pitch you can be tough you know winning the ball you can you have the vision you can make decisions by yourself you're a great passer great movement great technical skills well I've got him right there He just wanted to kick you on the pitch, you know? Do you know what though? It's the same when you played against Arsenal. I always thought there was a team that was very similar to us.

And that was one era where you could not really pick one out of each two you'd say both teams were team men if you know what I mean you see where he walked in the presence the sign yeah I always remember that score I remember Arsenal team they were like oh fucking massive and you sit there in the tunnel you go you can see that when you see you line up against each other you're like oh dear you've got me in Scalzi like I just think that it was like I always judge a football team that you could and we were brought up so what we were proud of in our team was if you wanted to outplay Arsenal they would outplay you you want to outfight them they would outfight you you want to outrun you they would outrun you any way you want to put a football game on a pitch they could beat you it's amazing as well the best partnerships I don't know if Manning might tell you something different you don't really work on it it just seems to come together so was that the same with you and Patrick?
49:59well Patrick you know he started his career at Cannes south of france and i was midfield player but he used to play often as a central defender when i was raised in monaco so it was very very close both cities and i used to play we used to play against each other and i remember him you know because i thought who's the tall guy behind so powerful you know he's played with such maturity you know intelligent and then he went to milan and then he signed for arsenal and i remember because when i signed for arsenal i make a radio show you know and it was we are on live and he spoke to me and he said i'm so exciting to play with you but i couldn't imagine uh the relationship we we we will have you know on the pitch and um like a piece of coin he was tall i was smaller than him i was left footed he was right footed i used to play long ball division he likes to run with the ball and I think we were very perfect like yin and yang
