In short

England’s 4-2 World Cup win over Croatia; debate over England’s lineup (Rice/Anderson/Bellingham roles, Rashford vs Gordon vs Saka); controversy around a stuttering penalty retake; broader World Cup talk (Spain, Mbappé, Messi); Ronaldo’s role for Portugal; plus “Built Different” on Kylian Mbappé and a Premier League combined XI (Liverpool vs Man United).

Guests/backgrounds

John Barnes (ex-England and Liverpool, scored one of England’s greatest goals; also known as a rapper). Co-hosts are unnamed in the transcript.

Key claims

Tuchel’s team selection is justified by system and work-rate, not idolizing individuals. Early second-half goal was pivotal; Croatia’s goalkeeper made “worldies.” England should rotate/consider Rashford, and Mark Gay’s absence is a surprise. Ronaldo at 41 is argued to disrupt teammates psychologically and should be dropped. Mbappé “turns up for big games” despite criticism.

Notable examples

England vs Croatia 4-2; penalty retake due to goalkeeper movement; Messi hat-trick discussion; Portugal fans and Ronaldo shirt numbers; Mbappé Ludo obsession; combined XI includes Schmeichel/van der Sar, Neville/Trent, Rio/Vidic/Stam, Dennis Erwin/Robertson, Keane/Scholes/Gerrard, Salah/Mane/Ronaldo.

2:25Half time came, do you know what I had? You think a beer and a bag of crisps, some nuts, a Salero. What? A Salero, lads. Is that ice cream?

2:37Nicky:Yeah. Oh, it's a lolly. Ice lolly. An ice lolly. It's got ice cream in it though, hasn't it? It's got the ice cream. Mando on it. No, you're on a better twister. No, I'm not. No, I'm talking about a conner. What conner does it do? It has mango on it and then inside's ice cream. I couldn't tell you the last time I had one. but when you revisit a lolly or something that you've not had for years and you forget how good they are now if you've got going to the freezer and you're getting a lolly out that you've not had for years what would be a lolly where you go this takes me back I wonder why it's been in the freezer for years to be honest with you well them's the ice ones you know you always have a box of them ice ones no but look you're talking about the summer aren't you because in the winter you never have a lolly watching a football match would you during the season when it's in the winter no but I would have a Cornetto in winter yeah I don't see that I see because he's got a bit of biscuit wrapped around it at Cornetto I see that and the kids like these Oreo club sandwiches that's not that's a bit of an ice cream but you can I have no idea what you're on about I did have an ice cream the other day in London it was unbelievable but if I was going to the free I used to love a feast you know the chocolate feast with a bit of chocolate in the middle absolutely sensational Lolly Dolce de Leche ice cream is what I used to have and they don't do it anymore in Tesco's yes I can maybe not have said that I don't know because what they do And you do the Tesco.

3:51What they do is they take away things that are too popular. And because you were so popular, they don't do it anymore. Hang on a minute. This feels like a conspiracy theory to me. You're telling me if something's popular as a supermarket, the supermarket go, we're making far too much money on that. No, no, no, no, no, no. You know why? Because they don't buy anything else. Yeah. Because don't forget they've got lots of stuff. And you're just going to buy this one ice cream, the rest of the ice cream will get sold. And it's not their own label. It's for somebody else. So they're making money for somebody else.

4:13Parganda, Dolce Delete, they stopped doing it. popular. Or copy it to sell and try and sell it. There was a five pound bottle of rosé wine as well that they stopped doing. A little rosé wine and because maybe I bought all of it that's why I didn't. Seriously, if you go along the aisles and if people just buy the one thing they have to stop doing it because nothing else gets sold. Do you know what? I actually think you're onto something because I used to buy for the kids they were called micro fries. They're like in a little red box you put them in the microwave a minute the kids look they've stopped doing them.

4:45Sorry, fries to go they're called, these ones. They do the McCain jobs in the box where you shake the box. These were in little individual things, one shape. They were called fries to go. And you're absolutely right. I used to stock up. And I used to see everyone get, stop doing them. He's on to something. At first I thought. Well, he wasn't lying, was he? I'm telling you the truth. No, I know. But I thought, no, surely if it's popular, they're going to keep it. Yeah, I thought the same as you. But no, it makes sense. Now we're on chance. Do you know another one that's totally died a death? these days but it used to be in every single bathroom and kitchen block of soap yeah soap bar no it's all the squitty stuff

5:24Nicky:yeah I used to eat them soap bar I mean you'd go in the shower at the cliff and it was all all sorts on the soap cubes and everything it was awful maybe when you're apprentices probably a little bit before your time the carbonic soap you don't remember that the green you remember that no ok green carbonic soap it was just green carbonic soap remember when we used to go in the bath when we used to apprentices Everyone going to baths together It's like you're full and more They just sit there And a beer like Robbo and Brucey And that was half time Yeah You saw people smoking In the dressing room Yeah no When I first went to Liverpool At Watford It would be an individual bath It was just one big bath You never had that no?

5:59Nicky:No we did yeah That's what I'm saying We had a couple of individuals But then one big one It stopped though didn't it Because of injuries now Dead legs and stuff You think about the health of it though Yeah it's not good is it Oh everyone's using the same bath So apparently It's either day after The week after And were they okay? Like this And were they okay? yeah yeah everyone was alright yeah let's get into the World Cup chat and start it off can I just say first of all yes we're lucky to be doing this kind of stuff meeting people like John yeah he was like a hero with that Liverpool team growing up watching that team Barnes Daglish Rush amazing it's incredible how lucky are we and you're saying they're coming from Manchester as well no not United fans but you were the best growing up you played the best football it was just brilliant wasn't it I used to remember seeing John on the telly when I were a kid.

6:48Hang on, you pulled a fucking five right there. I used to see John on the telly when I were a kid, and I'd be like, oh, wow, look at him. Handsome, athletic, tight shorts. It's funny when you meet people, like I'm meeting Paddy and I thought we were the same age, and he's saying when he was a kid who used to watch me. Disconcerting, Paddy. You mean I'm older than you? You've been around a long time, I'm telling you.

7:12Nicky:When we played against Jonathan for the first time at Old Trafford, I was a young whippersnapper. I remember because you kicked me. I remember. I remember the little kid. The man said to me, get against him, he's a bit older now, he can't get about the pitch and you just run off him, couldn't get anywhere near him. Not run off him. Could not get near him. You did when you come down about, I remember it well. It was about half an hour late that time. I remember it well. We were ten years younger, weren't we, playing against, just the experience playing against these. Like I said, growing up watching them, how good are these?

7:38Nicky:and then you get to share a pitch with them and do stuff like this and I suppose Man United when you obviously came through is the same thing because when people looked at us and they looked at either you know you said Dalbyshire and Russian beers and stuff like that but it was always about the team it was never about me it was always about the Steve Nichols it was always about the you know and Man United was like that and I know that because as much as fans would always put certain players above their teammates canton and stuff it was never about them it was always about the team and if you have that that philosophy that the team is the most important thing which is really when we get into what Thomas Tuchel Tuchel's talking about that's the recipe for success not idolising these individuals you know people talk about Bex and stuff but the work rate he puts in people forget that yes he got great individual players but forget when they haven't got the ball and forget when they're not doing what they do how hard they work for the team in fact when they announced the squad everyone was sort of the opinion why Ford are not going why is Cole Palm and Tuchel came out and said you know you kind of get this team spirit thing going and it's worked it's not just about his spirit it's about he has an opinion on how his team is going to play and if he doesn't find a place for a player like that we can't argue with him as much as we may like them we can't say they should have gone because if he can't implement a strategy to suit them and incorporate them and I think he recognises that with his back four he needs the midfield three that we have Declan Rice and you know Elliot Anderson and Bellingham rather than so I have no issue with it at all England beat Croatia 4-2 everyone was a little bit down in the first half the second half the entire country is on its feet fantastic it's a great result isn't it the first game as the lads will know when you're playing in the tournament excuse me the first game massive and to go and win beat Croatia I don't think Croatia was as good a team as they were they're an Asian team it looks like but to beat them 4-2 it's phenomenal did we win our first game did we score 6 in an opening game I'm sure we did didn't we I've got it in the recesses of my mind somewhere I remember an opening game for England in the World Cup where we we scored a lot I don't remember, but opening games are important.

9:38But opening games also, if you don't do well, you can't all of a sudden go, and that's the problem with England. If we don't do well, we're going to write ourselves off. We're going 4-2 now. We're going to win the World Cup. Yeah. Look at, you know, Cape Verde. Yeah. Throwing with Spain. I'm going to go, Spain aren't going to win it. Yeah. Yeah. You know, or aren't going to do well. So we get carried away when we, okay, and it was a good performance. It was a good performance. It was exciting.

9:56Nicky:It looked like we were going to score a goal. Yes. It's probably every game a neutral wanted to watch. Probably all around the World Cup. That's probably the best first game I think it's impressive as well Is the bench When you look at the bench The players can bring on I think they very strongly Look at that bench They've got some real Attacking players to come on And also as well Everyone you know Quite rightly has talked about Jude Bellingham's performance Last night But Elliot Anderson as well First World Cup And Luke Comfortable to me Do you know what I mean? He is comfortable I thought he was a little bit Quieter to let Anderson Actually He's sitting on wide though He's got to protect the back four.

10:33Nicky:Yeah, he does. That's all he does, really. Because Harry Kane kept coming into his position, didn't he? Do you know what I mean? Now, that's the way Harry Kane plays. He's brilliant at it. I just felt it stopped. I'm a bigger influence on the game. I still think he will. He does have a bigger influence. He's brilliant at keeping the ball and keeping play going. I think he's there to protect the back four. He is, yeah. And we don't expect him to. Him and Declan Wright are going to be asked by Tuchel to do that. Bellingham getting forward. What helped us is the early goal in the second half. Because I can tell you, after they equalised to all, if we had gone 15 minutes into the second half without scoring I could see them you know but that goal was so big for us and also as well goalkeepers union the Croatian goalkeeper pulled off some absolute worldies I mean we could have been six or seven up I mean unbelievable saves I'm going to go all over the show the games and stuff come to me but again the stutter penalty take I'm not having it lads I'm not having it yeah I agree I don't know you played with the best I'm with John Aldridge The thing about it is that you're supposed to, and it's a bit, have you actually stopped or have you just slowed down?

11:35You know what I mean? I think because that is why goalkeepers come off the line. Yeah. Because you go and you stutcher and he doesn't know. And they're going to come down hard on goalkeepers for coming off the line a little bit. Yeah. I think they have to do something about that. And I thought that was unfair.

11:49Nicky:I said, you know, because they had to retake it. Yeah. When you're stuttering like that, it was because the lad went in. You're fucking bound to. Yeah, of course. So I think if you stutcher, I think they've got to take that into account. Guardiola. if you stutter because he wasn't that much off the line was he no and you know I think they cancelled it for the lad coming in was he not the keeper from the edge of the box I don't think he was the keeper yeah it's the city he was encroaching what's he called the city Guardio Guardio yeah he did go but you're right because of the stutter you just naturally but did you notice he didn't stutter with the second one exactly clinical but he's apparently said Eric Kane he studied the goalkeeper and he decided to do the stutter because he knows that goalkeeper comes off his line that's official that's what he said to be fair I can believe that because he was the only one that went straight to the referee and said he's got off the line straight away do you think he'll keep the same team going forward to the next game or he'll change it I think that first game because he's won and these games are so called easy as much as they're not you're going to play every game but I think the Croatia was a big one so I think he can I think he'll make some changes now I think the biggest one they might change is Rashford I was just going to say Golden or Rashford Or Saka Or Saka Yeah I don't think it matters Which one of them start And which one of them Finances again I think they'll all have Influences I think so I think in the big games To be honest And what I've always said About Marcus And you know Obviously people have Their own opinion But I think I've always thought He does better for England Than he does for his club Yeah You know I remember Some of the players Like Darius Vassell for example Which is unusual England but he didn't do well For it So I think Marcus Because of course Maybe not in Spain But in England Where things are tight it's difficult for Marcus but in international football we've got all that room he was a sensation I think the biggest surprise with the team is Mark Gay not being in it I always thought it was Mark Gay plus somebody else and he's totally whether there's something wrong with him I don't know but there must be some hope with him that might be something they brought him on when you bring him on like about four or five minutes at the end the McGuinness minutes I like to call them but did he he brought him on did he yeah more than I think he he's got about 15 didn't he well with extra time but he brought him on I think 86 minutes he brought him on did he?

14:00McGuinness time McGuinness time but if you were to if you were in charge and you had the choice of Gordon or Rashford I know you're saying that much of a much that's Barcelona's decision

14:10Nicky:as well they pick one left of the one yeah but who would you start in this England team? in international football I would start Marcus Rashford in international football but I feel sorry for Gordon because it seems like we're just going on the right all the time so it's not really his fault you know what I mean because everything was going down the right and he was working hard but he just seemed to be going down the wood man awake he was chasing everything down at the front where he never stopped running did he a lot of the time though it is easier to come on as a sub do you know what I mean because the pace is different there's a lot more constraint all of a sudden Marcus it's easier there's space the full-backs knackers have been chasing Gordon all day can I as I've got the three pros here when I saw Rashford score his first goal and I was like oh amazing in fantastic and I was pleased for him he went through a second time and he just for me sometimes just takes about an extra couple of touches at the end rather than just putting it away do you think he does that too much you know like he'll try and just do something I think Marcus a young Marcus when he broke through in for a couple of years he didn't think he just did it I think when he thinks too much he's more of an instinctive player when he's instinctive and he goes at them like John was saying his pace his power it's impossible to stop When he starts thinking about it and looking to pass and looking to move, he makes the wrong decisions too many times.

15:32His goal was everything he is. It was just… Which is quite surprising for me that even when we went to Barcelona, we're not the kind of player he is, but there's space behind and even Gordon going to Barcelona is a strange one for me. So I think Barcelona are looking to change the way they play a bit by being more direct because they don't see Barcelona players and Marcus didn't. So it's an interesting…

15:48Nicky:What were you like with inverted wingers, John? Because you played on the left-hand side all the time. When you say inverted, you've been playing on the right in my left foot or just coming Yes. Well, if you play on the, if I played, I mean, please, you'd score all the goals, wouldn't you? Most outers. Whereas if most outers playing in my team, you'd have to go down and put crosses in for a centre forward. Whereas now, those are the ones who score the goals. Yeah. So depending on whether you're going to have fullbacks overlapping, you're coming in. But if you don't have fullbacks, you're going to overlap and you are right-footed playing out there, you know, it may not work.

16:17Did you play on the right side? Did I? Yeah. No, I would love to. Yeah. Because, of course, as I say, you'd be coming in field to score goals, wouldn't you? Of course, and that's what you do. So football, you look at Saka, you know, Anthony Gorn playing for Newcastle, you know, even Jack Grealish. So it just seems strange. So apart from Haaland, and now that you're getting away from the full-backs to put crosses in for your centre-forward, they're not wingers, are they? No. They're not wingers. They're wide forwards. Just keeping on Rashford here, Barcelona had the thing to buy him for£26 million.

16:47They spent£70 million on God. I know you're talking about the wages, but as it stands, he could return to United. we spoke about it in a previous pod saying that'll never happen but he'll have to it'll have to happen

17:01Nicky:yeah he's got no choice yeah that's what I mean so unless somebody buys him however but look Michael Carrick's there now it's a different situation I'm sure Michael would know him and like him and integrate him into the team so it'd be different to coming back to that manager if he goes back to pre-season and hits the ground running and goes on fire I don't see why he couldn't so when he left because of course you're closer to it than me so how were the fans we know that the manager may not have fans that's how he left The fans had lost the love for him. Have they? So that's going to be difficult for him.

17:28Nicky:Yeah, that's difficult. He got really lazy. I'd say for the last year he wasn't bothering his arse. So it wasn't just the manager? No. So the fans didn't just blame the manager? It was his fault. That's going to be difficult for him. I always think when it it doesn't happen often does it when you go from a big club to a big club on loan and they never really come back to it. It never really happens. I did it at Newcastle. I think I went and ran in Newcastle and I come back and they hated me and I got it was pre-season and I got booed on the pitch for 52 ,000 I scored two goals it was previously pre-season friendly I got manned a match and I got booed off and then I ended up staying there because like you're under contract you have to no one's coming to buy you and you just kick your head down work hard and I ended up being captain for three years so it can happen so the second half obviously came out they're a different team England Tuchel I've seen a few little bits where he's his post-match about what he said to him and his philosophy is play how we should play and if you lose you lose and be yourself I think for me that's easy saying that once you've won it I think like John hit the nail on the head before the early goal changed the whole game once you get that early goal you get your confidence up and you start going at them and going at them it's a different game if they weren't scored that early goal it could have easily been 2-2 and the thing is as you rightly say it's an ageing Croatia team but 2-2 they've got the bit between their teeth that third goal knocking stuff in on them because physically they couldn't go up anyway and then England's physicality took over after they went 3-2 up one thing you'd say about England you wouldn't like to play against it would you with the pace and power yeah don't get me wrong I think a lot of teams will be watching that yeah exactly they've come strong this tournament but you know everyone knows like John said you can't get carried away with the first game but it's an unbelievable result can we have a like a Gary Lineker moment here if they do win the World Cup you two will do the podcast in just your pants I'm not sure about that no what's up with you what's up with you come on I'll do it in your necklace Get off And nothing else If we win the World Cup I'll do it Completely starkers With a sock Over the old chap What a trainer sock A trick A pop sock A pop sock Yeah I say sock It's more of a thimble Right now Keeping on the World Cup But slightly away from football This amazes me Argentina's team Have shipped 500 kilograms of ribeye steak short rib skirt steak and flant steak across the Atlantic for the tournament last World Cup they shipped 2 ,630 kilos over to Qatar and they won the tournament just for me personally I think America is a real steak country why would you fly it in Argentina is the best steak in the world America do good steak they know for the steaks you were going to say across the Atlantic didn't you but it's just further south and it's just further up I was just going to say surely they have Argentinian steak in America Argentinian steak is the best steak they've got it in Manchester Goucho Grill they don't just Donald Trump they won the World Cup but that's not why they won the World Cup but you know whatever they want to do people try different things when you were all in World Cup did you all try local cuisines or did you stick to a regimented diet in Korea we had a McDonald's of course you did Well if you talk about local cuisine it really depends on where you are because in Korea and in Japan and places they eat some strange food which I'm sure you're not going to eat but like in obviously we're in Italy so we have pasta anyway don't we in Mexico They bring their own chef and it's set up like a hotel buffet it's fantastic you end up putting weight on when you go to an England camp As long as they bring baked beans I didn't care about anything Right They cook up tins of baked beans You know what you said about McDonald's and do you ever do this when you go abroad I'll go to a McDonald's or a KFC you know I know a child I'll go oh see what the burgers are like they're exactly the same but I always go oh tastes the same as all they do have some different things though don't they yeah I like that they do in Portugal the Farnes remember the pork thing they're nice remember when we used to go sorry we used to go when TGI Fries used to go it was a treat night wasn't it you had to have a treat night I remember it was after the game wasn't it usually yeah I think Bex used to piles of it used to come in because it's like 50 people to feed you know when you say about that McDonald's and everyone goes that's a bit dingy because you need athletes and what have you but they have McDonald's at the Olympic Village I think after a game, you've used that much of your energy.

21:53Nicky:You need to just replace it as best and as quick as you can. And that's pretty much what we've done. So, you know, the Olympics, didn't you say in Bolts, are you just at chicken nuggets? Yeah. Yeah. Now it's time for Built Different, where we discuss what makes a world-class player different from us mere mortals. Right, this week we're talking about Paul's favourite player, Kylian Mbappe. what makes him built different lads speed goals and he turns up for big games I think he'll probably keep the record of the only player to score a hat-trick and lose the World Cup final which must have been unbelievable but he turns up for the big games he always turns up for the big games do you know how bad was it in the first I've never seen that but that's what great players do you know they can be shocking but they've still got that belief that mentality that's still going to win a game for you in the second half club football though he always has a bit of a one of them doesn't he like he was really bad this year he scored 4-1 41 goals and he's getting booed no he had a terrible season what I'm saying is there's always something like I think he gets there's always something you'll see something online or in news where he's had a kick off with manager he got accused of being lazy didn't he yeah something like that there was a famous chat wasn't there with Enrique and him where Enrique said you won't play for me because you're too lazy and I think he gets labelled with that bit but them great players they don't run about imagine if they did and I think the last couple of games I've seen he has been working and worked really hard he's like an athlete you've never seen anything like it I've got some Mbappe facts here he's obsessed with the board game Ludo now if you don't know what that is you've probably played Frustration where you've got the little popper in the middle and you get he counters out that's what Ludo is but there's a bit more strategy to Ludo because you're not clicking the thing in the middle.

23:52You've got to sort of think about what you're doing and which pieces you're moving and all that carry on. But he's obsessed with that. And do you know what? I've got to say, I want to see the board games come back, lads. Everything's all apps these days and whatever. A classic board game.

24:08Nicky:You can play board games on your phone, can't you? Yeah. I was on train over there playing Scrabble with Aaron on his phone. I'll tell you an absolute classic board game Operation oh it's a fucking belter lads get the bones out yeah that's not a board game is it I thought it was just not a board game how do you play your Operation it comes in the cardboard box no it's like a little man laid down yeah it's a board game there's no one skipping around the board is there no you're going you're going round his body is the board isn't it snakes and ladders is a board game isn't it snakes and ladders I'll tell you what's tricky in Operation the Adam's apple get that out of a pair of tweezers fucking knows he's lighting up red every two minutes yeah what else is there what other body parts you know it's another you know heart it's the heart and there's a bit where there's elastic band in it yeah bone you've got to get off the elastic band off for a tendon is that what it is it's the tendon yeah yeah and he's got the funny bone and there's funny is there a fish in there what is that the bones of a fish in the stomach yeah i thought they were yeah i'm sure because he's eating a fish he has to go fucking hell doctor he's at the bones no one is dying how does he go from Mbappe to operation he also as well and you know probably is one of the world's highest paid footballers why not he had a luxury car collection despite not having a driving licence so a bit of a waste really just walk around and look at them or sit in them and not try if you buy the right ones they can go up in value can't they they might have done the old investment something we never did was it anything you've ever bought where you've gone that's ridiculous why have I done that forget hoses and what have you we're all about just material things I bought a tuk-tuk that's fucking up there that's up there a tuk-tuk a tuk-tuk's up there with a motorbike handles I bought a tuk-tuk did you not have a motorbike?

25:57Nicky:yeah I've still got a few Harley Davidson you've still got some? a few of them yeah but like the tuk-tuk they have the kids in the back and they used to go up and down where I used to live no you didn't honestly but when you turn a tuk-tuk it nearly flips so I don't I nearly flipped it and the kids were only little in the back so I'd give it away I bought a road legal golf buggy did you? that's a great present it wasn't a waste of time in Portugal? no yeah in England it was brilliant it was saccading out I fucking loved it it had a little boot with the back seats so it was all open like a golf buggy yeah what speed did it do?

26:28in saddle width?

26:29Nicky:20 mile an hour it's road legal it had a reg on it and everything and it had back seats and it had a boot so you could go to Tesco and put your shopping in it it's all fun and games until you're behind it and you're in an area it's twat in a golf buggy starts pissing down no you go around it was ongoing 20 mile an hour it went right two two surprising things but I've just got to go back to the tuk-tuk why I can understand the golf buggy you get there into the shop a friend of mine used to import them funny enough but what he used to do was sell them to I've never seen a tuk-tuk in England no it's a restaurant they buy them they like for show you know like you put outside restaurants put an advertisement on it I just bought one it was just a Is that like, sorry, it's a bit like a dog, but you pedal it.

27:10Nicky:No, you pedal it. No, yeah, you can pedal to, I see them in London all day. They have all the lights and music on. Yeah, they do. And it's like a shell around the back of it. It's basically a death trap. Well, that was Built Different, powered by Midnight. Built for now, not like the old school bookies. It's quick to use, simple to navigate with no messing about. I was buzzing for him, but by God, he should have been sent off. Do you see that one down the back of the Achilles?

29:13Nicky:No, I didn't see it. Somebody said that to me yesterday. I haven't seen it either. I haven't seen it. Did he mean it or was it an accident? I mean, he can come down the back of someone's Achilles, as Nicky will tell you, and make it look an accident. Well, yeah. I mean, you know, you watch it in slow motion and everything else, but it looks deliberate to me. I haven't seen it. He can do what he wants. but that's wrong though isn't it because someone might do that in this semi-final quarterfinal and miss the final I've not seen it no I'm not seeing it so I mean I don't know whether you're meant to do it I've not even seen it so I can't say whether that's no I can't I reckon it will come into the official's mind oh it's Lionel Messi oh yeah absolutely and it's absolutely rampacked with South Americans cheering him at the whole thing it's totally wrong but they must be influenced about that a little bit remember Fergie time didn't you I mean you know It happens One for me when you talk about these Like you know The goats of the game When I was watching Portugal in the night Ronaldo It looked to me And again just as a fan It looked like even the The lads on the pitch Were sort of missing him out I know he was doing jobs and he was pulling players away And what have you but he looked to me like He weren't part of that Team Do you know what?

30:30I think it's difficult for the manager.

30:33Nicky:I did a stick to football with him, with Roberto Marti. I asked him off camera, I said, is he a problem for you? I feel he is a little bit of a problem. At 41 years of it, I think there's only one position on the pitch at 41 years of age he should be starting a game. And that's goalkeeper for me. Now look, he is going to score goals and he is in a team that have a lot of possession. but once he's in there's a game when it has to be like transition there will be games his movement at 41 years of age I don't even just think just in transitions I think the biggest problem he has is that he I think he negatively impacts on the rest of the players in terms of what they have to give because they feel they've got a pass we've got to do that I liken it to when Steven Gerrard was at Liverpool where everything had to go through him and the players didn't show what they could do because Liverpool fans used to boo Jordan Henderson when he first came now he's not there anymore he showed what he can do and I've looked at that Portugal team and you look at them player for player and they're an incredible team but if everything's going to revolve around him even just from a psychological point of view it's okay if he's 25 26 27 28 but at 41 and everything is still going to be question marks about him other people are inhibited by him I was just going to say so you think it inhibits everybody else because that is such a talented team but I think I think during that game they were missing him out I think they would because they would passes on where they could have played each other.

31:59I'm not talking about the way they play. Psychologically, they're not really showing what they're... I think he's got that much of an ego,

32:04Nicky:Cristiano as well. He's a great lad, but he's got such an ego. He will be a massive problem for that. Also as well, you know, when he comes back to Man United, when he comes back to second time United, he was a problem. Do you think he's a little bit selfish that he's actually... For himself? The thing about it, either you don't take him. In fact, if you don't take him, which is fine, but he can't take him. If you take him and then don't play him, he's on the bench. He wants to play. He still influences people because he's Cristiano Ronaldo. It's a problem. It's a problem with him. If you look at the fans last night, I mean, pretty much, they had 20 ,000 Portuguese fans.

Read the full transcript

32:38Nicky:I reckon 18 ,000 and Ronaldo 7 on the back. So you've also got that to deal with your manager as well. Also, the trouble with Portugal, they haven't really got an outstanding centre-forward anyway, have they? Yeah, but you've got to have somebody run. No, to me, it has to be like the last 15 minutes. And you want to know

32:56Nicky:Messi's the one he's showing that trick he's like he'll be fuming for a 40 41 year old to be playing centre forward I just don't get it I think you might get away with it at centre half you might do in a team that keeps the ball and you probably get away with it at goalkeepers that lad did tonight it was 41 yeah Cape Verde but as a centre forward of the 40 or if you're 41 in a team without other players and he need you because you are the best player but with that I'm looking at that player for playing anything think even playing with 10 men without it it would be fantastic we actually saw last night with Croatia with Modric 39-40 give that penalty away and Perisic is 37 but I thought he looks alright actually but Modric sentiment feeling and Declan Wright running through you and also as well after the game the Portuguese players were going around clapping he just walked straight up did I say that and I was like that's not a good look he will be so pissed off though because like you said Messi Mbappé too he'll be killing him you can give the fans a little clap over your team I actually saw his record this morning I don't know it was in the last 10 games he scored one goal I think in big tournaments it tells you something now I feel sorry for Martinez because he's actually he's trying to embrace it and say no I've got the best goal scorer in the world but deep down he must know that's in his team and if you needed him but I'll tell you I didn't realise the amount of quality they have in that team okay centre forward who can put Gonzalo whatever his name even without a centre forward they've got great players who can do things does probably not but with a player like Ronaldo when we're talking about money and advertising and all the shirts will the Portuguese Football Association will there be something if he goes out there where they've had an influence on him going out there and he has to play who's the manager now what's the manager called Martinez and Martinez will make easy decisions by picking him I don't think Thomas Ducco would have picked him Absolutely not That's a great point Absolutely not I don't think he'd have been In the squad Do you think he still starts Every game for Portugal Even after that game The other day Or do you think What you said Bring him on No but if you leave him out And then You know what he's like You know how And the players on the pitch Now are going to be Even under more pressure Because he's going to be On the side of the pitch Like that So you know The best thing for him Would have been for him Not to have gone But once he's there You've got to Do you know what I mean With where he's gone With his career It's an easy one To leave out It's not like he's playing European team massively he's gone there the thing is Martins has gone so in on it he's going to look for his stupid leaving I think he might give him another hour and then take it from there you were saying when we're talking about golden boots and them early stages Spain was the surprising one for me nil-nil and you were sort of saying well I look to that group and I always think you can win it early on can't you I think they've got Saudi Arabia as well and again we talk about centre forwards around the world Portuguese Portugal Spain haven't really got one Osorbao plays a fun but they haven't got a goal scorer who's going to score like Harden and Bappe yeah funny enough for Osorbao I think he's scored 10 in the last 11 games but he was never a threat they haven't got a proper centre forward and I thought Spain were quite poor as bad as I've ever seen Spain play I think they can win it but I don't think they'll have the top scorer I think they'll share the goals around Mbappe no I haven't yeah and Harlan is not going to go far enough to do it So I can't see anybody that's challenging Mbappe.

36:24Nicky:Hey, Norway are bad, do you know? I don't think Norway are bad. No, no, no, no. I think Morocco. Yeah. They're decent. They got to the semi-family, they're decent, yeah. Brilliant. Good defensively. I thought Egypt were all right as well. Oh, what's that? Yeah, they were good ones. Egypt, Belgium. Fuck yeah. A player close to your John scored for Sweden. Isak, do you think he'll be key for Liverpool now, next season? It's going to be, you know, it's difficult for Liverpool because if you think about the way we played before when we had Trent created and Mo scoring, everybody else as a hard worker.

36:51That's what they did. Now when you talk about Wurtz, and Wurtz is my favourite out of all of them, I can tell you, he's so intelligent. But when he played for his club before, it was about him being the creator. But now you've got, you know, Eketike, and you've got Ezek, you've got him, and you've got Stravarskai coming on, and we still had Mo, you had too many. So, it's Ezek all of a sudden, and at Newcastle, it was Ezek. But now I think, you know, we've got so many good players, but of course, there's only one ball. And for me, the playmaker should be Wurtz yeah but Ekotike wants to run everywhere he's doing really well but he's running everywhere and doing everything so when he got Wurtz and Ekotike and if Iza come to that situation as well I don't think the balance is going to be

37:27Nicky:the balance is going to be right sorry Jack you mentioned go back to the England thing with the right back bring it came out didn't it where are you on Trent then with not being well let me tell you I don't think there's a team in history and I don't I don't think that if you're looking to win the World Cup the score goal to be creative any right back in the world is going to be you know you're a right back and for me you defend and if you can come forward in an orthodox manner why Trent did what he did was because the way Liverpool played under Jurgen Klopp suited him now it wouldn't suit him under all the managers it doesn't suit him at Real Madrid and it doesn't suit him at England in terms of Tuchel because Tuchel's not going to play that way do you think he could come back to Liverpool Real Madrid have just had another right back I know the thing about it listen we know how you can spin things can't you so as much as I would think there's no way for him to come back to Liverpool if all of a sudden we're not doing particularly well and Trent comes back then of course you know whatever excuse you you can forget the Spanish that you've learnt and then start speaking like a skeleton and get yourself back in so you know what football is like that's the thing so that's the only thing but of course you know what football fans are like if we're finishing fifth and we're not doing well and Trent comes back and he does well we'll forgive him wouldn't we where does he go from Madrid they just signed Dumfries from Inter Milan and Holland they're obviously not having him Trent is just suited to a team who's going to say we want our right back to be our creative player and no other apart from Klopp in terms of the way he played no other club's going to do that do you know what amazes me so Eketike is looking like he's out until 2027 but there's a rumour flying about that they could bring back Nunes from Al Hillel well once again it depends what the manager wants because if you want a Jurgen Klopp type of heavy metal I don't care about your technique you just run run run now if Andonia want to call him because his second name's a bit strange you may say the wrong word it might be it's Iriola it's not Iriola Iriola so if Andoni wants to play that way then possibly but I don't think that I don't think that's a it really depends on the manager doesn't it I mean there's no way that Slott would have would have had him because Slott's a more technical because he's not technical at all so it's a question of what the manager wants I think John Dreher is a Jurgen Klopp he creates chaos not a great finisher is it or from a technical point of view he loses the ball so if the manager wants to play that way then fine but again you won't want to play against it no as you're here John we've got United and Liverpool we want to do a combined 11 of the best players that you've played for Liverpool and United during the Premier League era we've got a short list here for you so let's have a look at the goalkeeping position first Schmeichel what formation are we playing oh good point 4-3-3 4-4-2 4-5-1 4-4-2 that's been all we're going back to old school players I like a 4-4-2 What's the problem?

40:13Nicky:We've got Mike Bassett 4-4-2 No we're a 4-4-2 lads 4-3-3 4-3-3 4-3-3 Alright I'll go with the experts And once again Because I always do this After my favourite team Or the best team Are we playing a team To win a football match Or just of the best players I've got to be honest John You're overthinking this Let's get the magnus out Let me tell you why Because you know why There's a bit emery There's a job Because you play Steven Gerard at the back web And you play you know so is it a team that can play or just the best players I always like to do a team alright then as you're a guess we'll go with the team the best team right let's go with the team to win a game yes to win a game right well let's start with the goalkeeping position Schmeichel van der Sar Alisson I would go Pete Schmeichs right okay right back Neville Trent Alexander-Arnold Neville you see that is that is why I say this always and thought about it the worst position on the football field is right back.

41:11When you go to school, the worst last pick, you play right back. So it's no surprise you've only got two right backs up there. Not left back, right back is the worst position. So once again, can we leave that to the last to see who are playing midfield? If the midfield ain't great, we're about to pick Trenton, but if we want him to defend, we'll put Gary in. That's a good point,

41:31Nicky:because they're both total opposites. Gary's a more all-round. But Trent, unbelievable on the board. Do you want to come back to that then? Right, okay, right centre backs Rio Vidic what is between Rio Virgin and Van Dijk Stam I would put between Rio Van Dijk and Stam but I would have to put Van Dijk and Ferdinand I would say I don't know whether you'd go for Vidic or Stam I'd agree Vidic do you know what I think Stam was better than Van Dijk I think Van Dijk's done it for a longer time I think they're more like Rio though I mean he's 6 '4 he's strong he's big in the air Rio Van Dijk for me I'd always pick Yap I love Yap as well I love Yap people don't understand how good Yap Stan was they just think he's a defender he was a beast he could play as well you never get basing one on one good in the air just everything but like you say what about Jamie Carragher no one's mentioned Jamie right back Jamie Carragher no one's mentioned Jamie right back right back where?

42:34far back so right back right back

42:37Nicky:so we're going Rio and Virgil by the sounds of it Rio and Virgil right okay left back Dennis Erwin Patrice Everett Andy Robertson see once again that's why I talk about a team because I love Dennis I love Dennis and a team that we play all the time and I like Dennis in a team but as an individual player I would go I think it's up to you whether you prefer Patrice or Dennis then we can come up with a decision Dennis all day long Dennis all day long Dennis and he's right footed right okay right midfielders Roy Keane Paul Scholes Stephen Gerrard, Nicky Butt, Michael Carrick, Paul Lynch, Jordan Henderson, Bruno Fernandes, Xavi Alonso.

43:12I'm putting Stephen in and you can have the other two if you want.

43:15Nicky:I think it's Stephen, Keane, Scholes. Stephen, Keane, Scholes. Roy, Paul Lynch was brilliant. Paul Lynch would play for both teams. I'll tell you what would happen under that because Stephen was a young lad and if it was decided that Stephen Gerrard was going to be a number six as a holy midfield player he'll do that. if he could be attacking so he can and with Roy there as well I think we'll release Paul to go and do what he does I'd have Roy in parlance and Stephen right okay wingers John Salah Mane and Ronaldo you can't call me in the Premier League because I had my time from you know I was in the First Division and a couple of Premier by the time I was in the Premier League I rocked him against Central midfielder and in midfielder I couldn't run especially Nicky coming down the back of my bad Achilles that was my bad Achilles as well yeah Giggs, Bex, McMahon.

44:04Did I say sorry?

44:05Nicky:Did I say sorry? I would have said sorry too. You might have whispered it. Right, are you going for the... Okay, Premier League, you know, it sounds really strange, but I did prefer Sadio Mane to Mo. I love Sadio Mane. I know Mo was great, but I prefer Sadio Mane. He was a mess. Cristiano has to be there. Sadio Mane's a better footballer. Yeah, I prefer Sadio Mane. And he works. So, so I, I would have to put Ronaldo and Ryan. I'd go Ronaldo, Giggs, Van Nistel, Romy And I can't believe I'm leaving Eric out But I just think he's not an out And he wasn't an out and out forward I would have Rooney in there I'm just going to say I'm going Barnes, Giggs, Rooney No I'm taking myself out No, I'm having you as the inverted winger You just go on goal This is Premier League Ronaldo, Giggs and then a forward How many years did you play in the Premier League?

44:56Yeah, but I was in the Premier League I was playing midfield then, wasn't I? By the time 90 When the Premier League came, 92 You put them in their own section then you put him in the wrong

45:02Nicky:centre midfield but I wouldn't be in centre midfield in the Premier League either Steve McManaman was brilliant yeah so three um Christian I mean for what two years Suha Harris was incredible but we're talking about longevity Ronaldo Giggs and I said Van Nistelrooy Ronaldo Giggs really for me I think the best finisher Robbie Robbie Robbie oh yeah yeah left foot right foot unbelievable Van Nistelrooy was good for him yeah fucking hell he's ruthless Yeah, but you see, if you look at Vanity. So was Andy Cole. Because he was quick, but Robbie didn't have anything obvious, because he wasn't particularly quick, not tall, he scored headers, not skillful, but he was just back in the net.

So get over to thatprizeguy.co.uk and enter now for just 30p. This week we want to know who is the best Spanish player to ever have played in the Premier League. I've got a few names to talk through. we've got David Silva Cesc Fabregas Juan Mata Fernando Torres Rodri and fucking hell Cesar Azpilicueta Cesar Azpilicueta Cesar Cesar Cesar no Cesar Cesar Azpilicueta Azpilicueta there we go I always struggled with that one did well yeah right go on then off you go for me straight away it'd be David Silva

48:22Nicky:yeah I think look they're all brilliant players and they're all other than Aspilicueta they're all like that technical brilliant players ones you don't really want to play against I think David Silva was probably as Nicky said he was the best one because you never knew where he was and he's done it a good few years he won the Premier League a lot didn't he he was Pep's man wasn't he Rodri Ballon d 'Or winner Fernando Teres gave us gave Vidic in Rio tough times for Liverpool did we ever have any Spanish players? what matter what matter he wasn't there when we were playing no do you also have many Spanish players around when we were playing with him?

49:02Nicky:not in the Premier League no Torres I suppose didn't have any Spanish speaking Alonso Chibi Alonso but he's obviously hard to tell anybody Spanish speaking he's not got Alonso on there either no wasn't it amazing if someone like Torres when he left Liverpool and went to Chelsea and just didn't quite work for him isn't it funny that it was like that Chelsea number nine was well what's her cursed and Shevchenko had a nightmare yeah what a player he was Fernando Taro's nightmare Kesman Kesman they couldn't find one until he got Drogba Drogba yeah yeah such a strange thing when that happens so are you going David Silva David Silva yeah right okay closely behind I'd say Rodri yeah would you also literally a cat amongst the pigeons David De Gea ooh De Gea David was brilliant He went off for Man United wasn't he?

49:52Nicky:How do you compare a goalkeeper to that list there David Silva Fabregas? Well you get a good goalkeeper and he'll probably win you the league. That's how you do it. Yeah but I'm not sure. Everyone scores goals don't they? Everyone scores goals. David had a couple of brilliant seasons yeah but I wouldn't say David won as the league do you know what I mean? Well you know what every part of a team wins you the league. True. 52:48He was just incredible. I'm just about to come on and I tell this story in Liverpool which is fine because Liverpool you know they're not English, they don't support English. And Cork, Roy Keane, Republic of Cork. So I was about to come on and Maradona got the ball and as he went through and I'm standing there just about to go on and then he went past Terry Butcher and then he went past everybody and as he scored that goal it took every ounce of strength in me not to go. yeah yeah how can you not appreciate that goal he was unbelievable

53:17Nicky:but what was the best goal that goal like yours in the American yeah but that was a friendly match they must have been pissed wasn't they that was a friendly match I don't care so you know what I say I couldn't believe you did 20 years of age yeah no that's my first Brazil goal but I tell you when people talk about that goal and yes it was a great goal in a friendly match whatever but I remember Ryan's goal against Arsenal which is a semi-final and I look at that goal with the old very chest do you know that goal the funniest part of that goal I've said a story a few times it's him I've never seen him so when Giggs he scores the goal and goes off for some reason if you watch it re-watch it for some reason Scorsy scores I had to take his top off and he changed his mind and then realise he puts his top back down well you'd say get it off off he just got carried away and didn't hit him I was watching Giggs you should have squared it to me you should have squared it but I was just watching running watching Giggs so I start doing this and I start to see me a bit of a fall you've got to watch you've got to watch you've got to stay down in the cameras I see Scorsy goes in the occasion and he goes oh no here we go in fifth place I Have a Dream with 3.3 % fourth Vindaloo 7.5 % third place no idea never heard of this Waka Waka 12.5 % yeah Waka Waka is um Shakira isn't it no it wasn't Shakira Africa South Africa yeah Shakira

55:02Nicky:I know it looks like I've edit already Looks like I've already edit Oh look at this Can I take this home for my kids? Is it edible? They say it's straight from Greg's. Straight from Greg's. When? Straight from Greg's. When? This morning. Are you sure? This morning. Still, oh, look at that. I'll take it home. Do you know what? These are called a Bavarian slice. Vanilla slice? No, but they're called a Bavarian slice at Greg's. That's a vanilla slice. In Bavaria, they call it that. That's a vanilla slice. What's the difference? Well, this fancy bit on top. That's it. That's from Bavaria, that one.

55:31Nicky:That's right as well, that one, doesn't it? It's what? It's got jam at the bottom. He knows his vanilla slices. It's got jam at the bottom of the Bavarian slice. All he needs on this is a bit of baked beans on there. Baked beans on there. But I would say the Bavarian slice, you need a knife and fork with it. It's impossible to eat like that because you're all over the shop. Egg custard. I love an egg custard. Shall I leave it for you boys then? No, take it off. I am a bit peckish actually now. I might say one for the car. I'll go with a biscuit one for the car. John, thank you very much for coming up, pal.
