In short
England’s World Cup group-stage so far, including concerns about style and confidence for the next match; a debate on Tuchel spelling/pronunciation; Neymar as a “world-class” example; and David Seaman’s career stories (including almost joining Manchester United, Arsenal/England memories, and the Beckham free-kick/“fluky” goal discussion). Also includes Seaman’s “Built Different” segment about aftershave and vanity, plus a humorous tip ban/skip anecdote.
Guests
David Seaman, former England goalkeeper and Arsenal No.1; known for his iconic ponytail and mustache, later charity shaving. Other hosts are referenced (Nicky Butt, Paul Scholes, Paddy/“Scalzi”), but only Seaman is a named guest.
Key claims
England have been “underwhelming” and “tough to watch,” but England can still win games via match-winners (Bellingham, Rashford, Kane) even if not “pretty.” Tuchel is framed as pragmatic: get through the group, pick the best team per match. Seaman says a famous Brazil goal was the “biggest fluky goal” (he claims it was outward-swinging and not meant to go in).
Notable examples
England vs Ghana and Panama; Neymar at Barcelona/PSG; Seaman’s near-United transfer from QPR; Seaman’s World Cup 1998 Brazil/ronaldinho moment; Beckham’s repeated free-kick attempts and the Greece/Old Trafford free-kick; Arsenal’s title win and beating Man United at Old Trafford.

Automatic transcript. May contain errors.0:00Hello and welcome to a special episode of The Good, The Bad and The Football, sponsored by Midnight, the betting app that's built different. We're at Spotify HQ with some fans of the pod. Give us a cheer everyone so everyone can hear you. Very, very, very special show tonight. And for you lot listening along at home, remember you can watch us on Spotify. Before we get into the podcast, we've come down to the capital city, folks. As I say, Nicky Butt, he's already got himself into a little bit of bother. I don't know what this is, but apparently he's got into an argument with someone at a tip. So Nicky Butt, please fill us in on the details.
0:48Somebody said hello to him.
0:49Nicky:No, it wasn't in London. It was back home before I left. So you know when you go to the tip nowadays and you're scared of taking one bag because they judge you on what you're taking in and how many times you go. So literally I drive up to this tip. It's a truth, honestly, I'm not telling fibs here. I drive up to this tip and I'm thinking, nice jolly morning. And I drop my crap off in the tip and I'm going to go to the station. So we get up there and there's this guy at the gate bit and he flags me down like this and he goes, what's your address? And I went, what? What's your postcode? So I told him to postcode and he goes, right.
1:22Nicky:put your windows down and need to look in the back of your car so I'm going what for and he said because if your seats are down at the back it's classed as a commercial van so you're not allowed in so I'm like well I'm not putting my windows down mate I've got a lot of crap in the house bit of cardboard from the house I missed a bin man last week so I got a few smelly bags to go in and skip bin man and women bin people yeah and anyway this guy asked for my windows to go down at the back, so I put my windows down. Obviously, my seats were down. Apparently, I'm not going in because it's a commercial van, so I'm thinking, I'm raging.
2:00Nicky:I'm going, for fuck's sake. Literally, I'm putting a bit of cardboard in the tip. This is a Range Rover you're in as well. Yeah, but I mean... So we can see clearly it's not a van. Yeah, but he said to me, your windows are blacked out because you're sneaking stuff into the tip. And I went, no, it's standard, mate. I've not blacked my windows out to nick a back. Anyway, long for a shot. I thought well I'm there now I'm going to go for it so I've gone up the ramp and I see this bloke getting up and he's like trying to chase me up the hill but he's got his walkie talkie out and I'm thinking I'm on a chase like I'm doing some drug dealing or something in a tip so I've literally got up the top throwing all the bags out and I'm going back down the hill and he's like going mad at me like this and I'm so anyway I'm banned from a tip I like the tip I like going down there I love the tip it's therapeutic innit yeah I love it getting rid of rubbish it's brilliant oh it's amazing but I think something that sort of pips the tip in satisfaction a skip outside your house oh yes oh you get a skip outside the house oh you're throwing all kinds of shit in there everything goes in chairs bits of old tellies kids anything you've got to watch for your neighbours because do you get that room where you are if you put a skip out everyone starts filling it No, it's behind the gates, isn't it?
3:21Oh! Someone's played Premier League football at Manchester United. Fucking hell, here we go. Wait a minute, so you live on a street and you put a skip fuck off? Let's move on from this skip chat. I want to bring someone out here, folks. Someone I love very, very much. He's an unbelievable chap. And in fact, the only thing better than his goalkeeping back in the day was his ponytail. It's former England number one. Give it up for David Seaman. Come on.
4:04Dave.
4:05Nicky:Good to see you, Dave. Good to see you, pal. Welcome to the show, my mate. How are you with skips outside your house? I'm with Scalzi. Behind your gates. Behind your gates. Sorry. I'll tell you how posh David is. He's got a lake in his garden. He goes fishing there. It's a river. Right, before we start the podcast, Dave, when we have a guest on, we always do a little bit of non-football chat. We've cleared up the skips, but there's a thing at the minute, I don't know if you've seen this, everyone. It's kind of like a viral thing on this thing about what can you throw the furthest? Is it a baguette or a naan bread?
4:48Wow. Now, you're famous. I can chuck it a bit. You can chuck it a bit. Now, if you were seeing a naan bread or a baguette, I mean, just straight off the bat, for me, I'm thinking baguette. It's like a javelin. Yeah, but you can frisbee a naan bread, can't you? Well, can you? I think with a naan bread, you can like swing it around like a discus.
5:12Nicky:So you could do that. That's a hammer you swing around. A discus, you don't swing it. A discus, right? No, you spin around with a discus as well, don't you? Do you spin a discus? You spin around, don't you? No, you're thinking of a plate on a stick. I'm thinking the hammer you spin around. You could stew that with a nambread, actually. What you could do with a nambread... Screw it up as a ball. Sling it. Give us a cheer if you think baguette's going to go the furthest. Nambread. Oh, it's a 50-50, isn't it? No, nambread wins that. 51-49 nambread. I thought baguettes, wouldn't I? What about if it's a garlic baguette?
5:53Baguette? Garlic? Garlic baguette in my mouth. He'll never catch you on that. Right, let's get into the football chaps. World Cup group stage round up. David, what do you think about England so far, pal? A little bit underwhelming, if I'm honest. The game against Ghana, I knew that was going to be tough. But the Panama game, the first half, was hard to watch, if I'm honest. But then obviously two big players turned up and produced. It's what we need to go into this game on Wednesday because we needed something to cheer about, don't we? We needed some goals and get the fans behind us again. And that wasn't happening.
6:41But I'm quietly confident. but we all need to play our best game, not just like two or three of them. Yeah. Do you think in the early stages, you three, like me, when I watch England, if it's like that where you get the result, but it's not the best, a little bit boring. Sometimes I always feel as though like the best is to come. Like if you blow teams away straight away in them early stages and then progress on and it never quite works out the same. Listen, I want an exciting game, but I don't mind. as long as we're getting the results. Yeah, I'm the same. As long as the results are coming in.
7:17Yeah. And we're playing with a bit of flair. At the moment, it's a tough watch. It really is. And it must be the same for you.
7:24Nicky:I think I'm saying. Exactly what you say. It's a tough watch. And I think Paddy's right to say there that eventually your form will come. But then you're watching the other teams. You're watching France batter teams. You're watching Argentina batter team. You think, fucking hell, we might have seen a World Cup winner I don't feel that with England yet I haven't seen a performance where I thought they're going to win the World Cup Do you know something though with Tuchel being German obviously not English he's not as I don't think emotionally into the way the fans are at home wanting to play the best football every single game wanting to excite all he wants to do is get through that group stage at the top on to the next one win that game and I think the genius thing for him that I really like about him is that I think he'll pick every game the best team for every individual game so I don't think he even knows his best team.
8:14I've been a little bit disappointed
8:15Nicky:because I thought he came to make us play good football, to make us good on the Ike. You think of his PSG team. I remember watching his PSG team at Old Trafford. They were brilliant. They're passionate enough to pitch. I'm looking forward to this with England. He's picked a team without cultured footballers. When we all talk about Fouldens and Cole Palmers who are brilliant, change a game, they can make your team play good football and the only two players he's got like that now in the squad I think is Cobby Martin who has central not played in and Eze who he's only played for like 20 minutes at a time, he's gone the quick, powerful, strong now look, I don't think they've been great but what they have got is match wins in Bellingham, in Rashford ok Rashford is the only school one goal but I think he will come good and obviously Harry Kane as well so I think they can win games but doing it by not being pretty on the eye.
9:11Do you think like when he announced the squad way back when and everyone had their opinion, like you just said, Trent, Palmer, Ford, do you think now it gives England fans that thing of going, well, Luke, that's what everyone was saying. This is what's going to happen. He's just going to almost try and run the legs off a team and just get them results. Like you say, not emotionally invested, but you can't deny he's getting the results that'll only happen though if they go on and don't win it yeah they're still in the tournament they've still got a long way to go they've still got a draw that's I'd say is still quite a favourable until they get probably they could get Brazil or Japan it looks like Japan after the first first half of the game then you've got Argentina I think and that's if everything goes to plan so look we won't know if this man is the right man until we get to the very end because Gareth Southgate got us to two finals and fell at the final hurdle.
10:09Now, can he get us to the final and then produce that bit of something of a special manager that changes a game, that changes a team, that can eventually get us over the line? Yeah, just what you said then, do you say Tuchel or Tuchel? Fuck yeah. Well, you say Tuchel, you say Tuchel, I say Tuchel. You say Tuchel, I say Tuchel.
10:32Nicky:We've just had a really high-level chat about football in New York. Those are the things that keep me awake at night, Nicky. What do you say? I say Tuchel. Well, you're going to be wrong, aren't you, from Bolton? You say Tuchel. Tuchel. You say Ezzer. I say Eze. No, I don't want to say Eze. Eze. You say Eze. Is it Tuchel or Tuchel? I think it's Tuchel. I say Tuchel, thank you. It's got a CH in it. Two against one. What do you say, Dave? Three against one. I say Tuchel and all. Tuchel as well. Oh, you're giving it all the culture. No, look here. You look silly in front of a room full of people.
11:04and I hope you're pleased with yourself. He left school when he was 10 in. That's fucking right. He had a job. Filing cabinets, Nicky, at 11. Were you? Did you get expelled? Not 11. 12. What were you doing with the filing cabinets to take them down the tip?
11:25If England win the World Cup, I've got to say, I think we all grow the classic David Seaman Tash. I'd be well in for that, yeah. How long have you been tash-free, David? Tash-free. I actually grew one back for November just recently. All right, yeah. So I did that for the charity, obviously. But before that, I probably, it just got shorter and shorter. I took the ponytail off for charity, live on the telly. Yeah. Did that, and then the tash. That was your new live on the telly? Yeah. I can't remember that. What was that on? On GMB. Really? Yeah. He got Charles Worthington out, and he just lifted the ponytail up like that, and went snip, snip.
12:01and he went there you are I was like is that it and I was like doing this all the time like reaching for me ponytail it just felt weird did you lose your powers like Samson a little bit how long does it take to grow it about an hour about a week is that a week yeah yeah it grows yeah some people have just got a fair rate of knots got that thing haven't they they can just did you grow one yeah honestly I wouldn't I wouldn't be not to the level of David Seaman I'd mind to be a little bit wispy and what have you. It'd take me, honestly, about eight months to get anything like where it looks like an half-deason.
12:39Oh, like the top of my head, it just patches everywhere. Fucking eight years. So, before, when I started at Leeds as an apprentice, I weren't allowed to have any facial hair for the team photo and that's the first time that I actually shaved my tash off. How were you? I was 16. Christ, you had a full tash at 16? I was born with the Taj What's wrong with you? 16 had that little bum fluff on me It's like full Taj We had to shave all our facial hair off For the team photo Every player? Every player Who was the manager? At the time it was probably Jimmy Arnfield Jimmy Arnfield Bloody hell Yeah I think so It's quite an old school thing Shave that off for having a team photo When you look at You know, sometimes you'll see them little quizzes, a football quiz, where you'll see the outline of someone's hair or facial hair.
13:39You guess who it is? I think you, with that ponytail and the tash, has got to be one of the most iconic and famous in world football. I mean, who can you think in world football? Who's the American geezer? Alexi Lullis. Alexi Lullis. Who is it? He had the little pointy beard, didn't he?
13:58Nicky:And Carlos Valderrama. Oh, yeah. A little tash as well, innit? Yeah. A little tash. Yeah, but outside of actual mustaches, I'm going to put David Seaman number two, number one, Tom Selleck, Magnum. I don't mind being number two. Yeah. What about Graeme Souness? That was a tash. Oh, Graeme Souness! No, I'm still number two, Paddy. Yeah. Graeme's, do you know, it's funny, innit? because I remember and also this is going quite way back Mark Lawrenson so Loro used to have a tash he shaved it off you shaved yours off Graham shaved his off and I've got to say freaked me right out seeing him on the telly when old tash is it felt just weird back in the day a tash was a big thing though wasn't it there was loads yeah longer and a tash Mickey Quinn remember him Mickey Quinn Gary Neville he used to have a little tash back in the day didn't he like yours now isn't it well Don't go out on a windy day.
15:00All right, Dave. I'm a bit of fun. You're getting a bit personal now. Let's look at England's route to the final. Please, God, that happens. So, Congo, Mexico, in Mexico City. Congo, Mexico. Anybody else in the hall? Hello, someone's come down to London, got all posh. It's funny, I was going to say, I always, when I say DR Congo, I always want to say Dr Congo. Somebody did that on the radio. I heard that on Top Sport. Yeah, I heard that. No. I swear. You know who that would be? Martin Keown. You tell him. Can someone please check in on Martin Keown as well? He had a bad time up until Arsenal winning the league.
15:52And then I thought, oh, that's him. he's going to be a different man but I've not seen much of him on Talksport since yeah he's been on the radio he was on today he's travelled out is he good moods good vibes he's Martin Keon yeah Mexico in Mexico City that's a tough game
16:10Nicky:tough one isn't it if they get there because I think they've got a tough game they've got to be Ecuador but I think with the altitude I think it's 7000 feet above sea level playing at 3 o 'clock doing my research someone has done the research It's a big, spuddy Spotify account. Can't fuck up here, can I? Play it one time. I don't think you can say fuck either. Or you've got into a fight at a tape, but you have. No, but I think that'll be a really tough. We've all played in heat, especially in the World Cups. The Nigeria game? Oh, Nigeria. Me and Scholes are two ginger lads from Manchester playing against Nigeria at three o 'clock in the afternoon.
16:48Nicky:We knew it was going to end well. It was a disaster. Now it's time for Built Different, where we discuss what makes a world-class player different from us mere mortals. Powered by our friends at midnight, the betting app that's built different. This week we're talking about a world-class Brazilian whippersnapper, Neymar. I say whippersnapper, I still see him as a young lad, but he's in his 30s now, isn't he? 34, I reckon. I might be wrong there, I don't know. I've always liked him he's divided opinion lately but I always thought he was a sensational remember in the Barcelona team Messi and Suarez when you come on the scene you think he's going to be the next big thing which obviously went on to be but let's go to he divides opinions maybe I don't know why really but every time I watch him he's the one you look at when the ball goes to and the crowd get excited he did it at Barcelona did it at PSG so yeah fantastic player unbelievable record for Brazil as well goal scoring It's absolutely unbelievable.
17:50This is what... I don't know if I loved it about him, because blokes who do this sometimes drive me mad. He's got an incredible selection of aftershaves. That's what I love about him. I love an aftershave. And I never finish a full bottle. I like aftershaves. Yeah, I never finish one. I always find something else.
18:09Nicky:Yeah, I know I'm different. I get fine when I stick with it. Really? Yeah, I don't like all that changing around stuff. Well, it says here, he's got some amazing smelling aftershaves, but so his teammates and they go that smells nice he takes the labels off in his wash bag so you'll never know what they are everyone knows what the bottle is because they've all got their own styles the bottles haven't they do you know what I mean I think you'd know what a Creed bottle is but outside that Tom Ford you'd know Creed you'd know Tom Ford you'd know Louis Vuitton you'd know I've never had a Louis Vuitton what's Louis Vuitton it's good I'll get you on oh I'll get you on is that with the aloe clothes and you know the dupe one the other one you get the fake one but it's called Summer Homme I can't remember what it's called isn't it what it's called Ombre what makes the bottle oh yeah that jump all gold here that's like a body in it yeah Louis Vuitton but with Louis Vuitton you buy it and when it's done you take it back and get it filled up half price no yes how's no one gotten to this I didn't know that I threw the bottle away and went back I had to buy it so just bring your bottle back next time I was gutted is that right yeah where do you go to have that done fucking Louis Vuitton I've got some in my bag funnily enough I've got some in my bag hang on a minute that's weird I've got some in my bag where's my bag?
19:25not every not every Louis Vuitton shop's filling up aftershave where do you go to get it refilled? they're just not where do you go to get it refilled? South of Tuna do you do it at every shop?
19:35Nicky:no they don't and I've never heard of this Louis Vuitton shop I've got some where else are you going to get it refilled? they're going to get it refilled yeah but they won't all do aftershaves will they? so if I go to Louis Vuitton Selfridges in Manchester City setting they'll fill after shave up well you've got to buy one first use it all take it back and then they'll fill it up half price what about if I buy one keep the receipt lose the bottle and I go back with just a puck I've got the receipt fill that cup up because whoever finds your bottle will probably go back and get it filled up it's like when you get you to nick the bottles off the steps and then it's bottles a little rollercoller bottles get 12p right now listen players you've played with and players you've played against who are the best smelling Cole used to always look dapper and have his night he always looked what did he wear I don't know what he was but he's always smart was he a bit like Nehmer secret wouldn't tell you you do well getting a word out of Cole anyway he wouldn't speak to you most of the days but he was always very smart and smelled really nice I like that Carlton Cole oh not through playing against him doing TV with him we're going back to West Ham days here no honestly he smells unbelievable I actually asked him what it was last time and I can't remember what he told me.
20:48So he told it you? Yeah, he told it me. It wasn't a secret. What about anyone you've come up against on the pitch? Do you ever get into the tack and think, yeah, bastard, oh, you smell quite nice. No, not really, no. There's a few that don't smell very nice. Who's the one where takes the most toiletries into the changing rooms and you go, Christ, he's still in the shower, he's got the shower gels, the nice deodorant.
21:13Nicky:I think everyone used to have their own wash bag didn't they anyone bringing a hairdryer in no no you used to have them in the changing rooms in the bathroom who is the most vain comedian you've come across take yourself out of that because obviously you do your sunbeds and your spray tans and all that who's the most vain one who's the most vain one John Bishop are you a witness to this everyone for when I take this to fucking HR because I'm telling you now, I'm suing. That was built different, powered by Midnight. Built for now, not like the old school bookies. It's quick to use, simple to navigate with no messing about.
21:56Remember, you've got to be 18 or older and please gamble responsibly. One you might not want to really think about, Dave, but if we get to the quarterfinals, that'll be Brazil, although it's Japan in the lead at the minute. We'll not talk about that Brazil bit. Yeah. Is Japan still 1-0 up for us? Yeah, still 1-0 up. So, well, let's just pretend Brazil beat Japan. Because I just want to talk about that goal while I've got him. Watch it, because all us three were on the pitch, by the way. Right. So, now, I've spoke to you about it in the past, just when we've been having a brew and what have you.
22:35But for you two, as outfield players, how did you see it?
22:41Nicky:if you look at the footage I was the first man where the free kick goes over because it was outward swinging I didn't think for any I'm just thinking get a header on it Rio or Saul get it out of the way because it was curling away from the goal and as it's gone over me I'm looking there and I'm thinking that's the luckiest goal you'll ever see and you'll never see anything like that ever again no way now by the way you're talking about one of the best players of all time so I'm not downscaling him he was a genius but if you're going to shoot at goal you shoot swinging into the goal. You don't shoot away from the goal.
23:12Nicky:And I would put anything on that was the biggest fluky goal you've ever seen in your life. I didn't mean it. No way you mean it. But he said he did. He said he did. No such ones. No way. By the way, still fucking went in, didn't he? But I knew I was told straight after the game that he didn't mean it because Giberto Silva was playing for Brazil at the time and he was my teammate at Arsenal. And he told me it just didn't matter because I was just in a world of just pain. It was horrible. This is the thing where, with these two, when I have my arguments with them about goalkeepers versus outfield players.
23:53There we go. No, no, no, no, no.
Read the full transcript
23:55Nicky:Does anyone know Paddy played for soccer? Never stop talking about it. Consider 84 goals and two goals. They'll burn themselves out in a minute. Are you all right? Right, OK. Now, as an outfield player, if you misplace a pass or a bad tackle or whatever, it is what it is and you carry on playing. Goalkeeper makes one mistake. Everyone goes on about it. What about all the goals they save? Well, you do cost us, don't you? That's why. But it's like even the Brazil game, right? I had a good game in it. I had a couple of 1v1s with Brazilian and Ronaldo. Yeah. Made a couple of saves and that. But nobody remembers that.
24:31No one remembers it. Everybody remembers the goal. Just talk about that Brazil team, Dave. I was just thinking about it. If you look at the Brazil team now, is probably average, isn't it? That team we played against, fuck you now. That was Brazil-Brazil. That was Brazil. Brazil-Brazil. Roberto Carlos. Yes. Lucio, the centre-half, and Bryn. Rivaldo as well. Rivaldo, R9. R9, yeah. Roberto Silva's a good player. Cleberson. They're not probably them types of players, but fuck, you know, Ronaldinho. Yeah. Fuck, you know. It weren't funny, but at the time, after I'd let the goal in, we still had like half an hour to go.
25:05And then they went down to 10 men, didn't they? because he got sent off for Rondinho. And I'm in the goal and I'm now thinking to myself, shit, if this scoreline stays like this, am I going to get treated like Bex did in 98? Yeah. You know, that's the sort of pressures. What score was the game? Do we know? 2-1. I know,
25:24Nicky:trust me. Do you know something, Dave? Do you know something, Dave? And I watch it, I've not watched it, I've watched it, but after the game, I've watched it, and you always see the goals. But just before half-time, like the ball goes out to the side and Bex not jumps out of the tackle but he must have been thinking that the ball that kicked against him he jumps up then the ball comes back to Scolze I think he took a bad touch and then they get the ball and break and I should have brought him down so three mistakes straight away Bex jumping out of the way Scolze I should have brought him down Ashley Cole should have brought him down this is not obviously the free kick but the goal before half time there was like five of us should have wiped him out got back behind the ball got to our time and I think we would have gone and won it yeah bit late now wasn't it bit late now do you know I've said that so many times to my Arsenal defence when Giggs came through in that semi-final kick him and that Uri chest was iconic after that wasn't it just on Ronaldinho have you seen him since I have yeah so we actually played against each other in Soccer Aid you know Paddy played in Soccer Aid hey never mind that hey I played in that one oh yes I did I tuned Ronaldinho for a Greggs at fuck off at Nutsford Services Ronaldinho Cafu Deeder me Cafu Nutsford Services Greggs Cafu and Deeder in that team as well weren't they yeah I forgot about them but yeah but I have I've met him and he actually got they got a free kick in exactly the same position as what he scored from right so I'm in goal straight away I've gone go on try it again try it again and I'm like shouting at him and he was like laughing and laughing he tried to do it again he knocked it way over the crossbar and that was it I was like yeah see lucky if we if we you know if it works out as it does we get to the semis that'll be Argentina no Dave and you Scalzi you were against them in round 16 98 World Cup that's where you took Simeone out for a penalty talk us talk us talk us talk us from another one of your bad games David you know what so like they I remember it obviously because like it came through and I thought I was going to get there so I've gone down at his feet and he's just towed it past me and then he's like dived into me and it was a penalty it was well played by him yeah but I did save a penalty in the shootout like a few minutes later exactly and also as well just with that where we we talked about what you were saying about those moments.
28:05Then that gets used by Bex with the little flick, which was just... Which was a shocking decision. Yeah, exactly. And what happened after that was absolute madness, really. Do you remember? I mean, you three, obviously, you two were close to him. What happened? Fucking hell, what happened? Half the country went into meltdown. Oh, the West Ham away the first game. the first game the first game
28:32Nicky:back I remember Betts coming back and the Miser was just having a word with a few of the players saying keep an eye on him he was only young and pretty much everybody in the country except Man United fans what it's a killing basically it was effigies of him up hanging outside of pubs it was it was actually disgusting when you think about it I think he actually quite enjoyed all that you know I don't think he did he liked people talking about him and stuff everyone liked if it's nice he's not like let's hang up an effigy of you and burn it no I really don't think he minded I think he loved that because he wanted to be a bit of the villain so he could just prove him wrong I think his mum and dad and all that side of it were like really yeah family wise but I remember the first game honestly and obviously we all know Bex but we've been our mate since it was 11, 12 and I was like fuck it and I never realised how bad it was until like West Ham West Ham hate Man United anyway full stop but that game how well did he handle it yeah he was brilliant wasn't he yeah very strong you thought if it was about you I'm not sure I could play football but like I say the attention I think he couldn't have asked for the worst first game of the season West Ham away old West Ham tight to the pitch it was horrendous but to be fair he turned it around and he got us that free kick at Old Trafford got us into the was it the World Cup or the Championship he got us into that free kick World Cup World Cup yeah unbelievable but jeez it was like he took so much stick yeah that free kick against Greece I was in a pub in Bolton watching that and dear God I mean the fucking place erupted what a moment that was you know something though he must have had about eight goals of that before and he missed all of them back I remember Teddy saying I'm going to take that one and he didn't he said no I'm taking it again and puts it in you watch Teddy sharing him on that free kick he lines himself up with the goalkeeper and the ball and the goalie can't see the ball when Bex hits it that's why he doesn't move the goalie he just watches it go in but I was a bit like you I was at home because I was injured I was celebrating no one mentions Teddy and that do they oh Bex is to go the glory little snippets right Dave while we've got you here pal we've got to talk about Arsenal as well as England any Arsenal fans in the room two I thought there'd be more than that I thought there were a couple of smug faces at the back of the room they're really content with themselves so firstly obviously them winning the league for you must have been like amazing mate it's such a relief for them to do it because all that rubbish and negativity that was generated from finishing second three times was like was getting tough to take you know and everybody turned like I say into a negative but it was always a positive because we always we were there or thereabouts and then to go and do it you know in the way that we did it it was special it was really special and you know as an ex-player and a player that's won it a few times it was you know them feelings don't you when you're watching it on telly you're like I remember doing that and I remember doing that you like the open top buses and all that it brings back fantastic memories it must be a top buzz that and also as well you'd have faced these two many a times over your career any moments domestic games that stick out obviously the Giggs he go but with you two in particular with yeah just he was like the size of him it was hard to score past him do you know I don't think people really grasp how big he is no they don't but the whole Arsenal side they were massive they were massive but I always think about goalkeepers when you try to score goals and the most imposing ones and I'm going away with England training and shooting he hardly did shoot anyway did you you couldn't be arsed I won't give him away any secrets I put number two and number three I'm just going fishing with guys you do a bit of shooting me he's no better but it's just you look at him you shoot and you think I'm scoring past him I had that with a few keepers with Peter Schmeichel with David and around that time there was a lot of very good English goalkeepers weren't you thinking Tim Flowers is about David James Nigel Martin that seems to have gone a little bit now David I don't think there's that pill to pick from anymore there's not as many that are up there at least we've got we've got like two or three that are now playing in the Premier League although you say two or three it's not a lot I know and even James Traff he's not a regular so that's tough that's my only worry about this World Cup is when I saw Jordan coming out the other night when he clattered the guy and somehow got the free kick for him if he gets injured we're in trouble because with Henderson and Trafford they haven't got what you think about the sort of like even that first game where they were clearly trying to play out from the back didn't quite look comfortable but you as a keeper this emphasis on keepers playing out from the back when clearly you know the ones when you watch in the Premier League who aren't that comfortable at it but the manager still insists on it but if you're not good at it then you you've got to make sure you pick the right pass you know and the one that's straight down the middle is always the one that ends up being the troubled one yeah you know because as goalkeepers sometimes we can't pass it properly you know they'll like wrap it in or they'll bounce it in and stuff like that because they don't have pass appreciation as as much as what these guys do was you asked to play out from the bow i was you technically you're very good weren't you you could kick a ball yeah i could yeah i could hit you when hodl you'd have had to play on from the bow yeah but it wasn't it was not it wasn't as much as what it was now or is now.
34:23Almost like outfield players are for these days. You know, you look at the ones that are really decent at it, like Edison was fantastic at it. Rea at the moment, you know, he's brilliant at it as well. But he was an outfield player, Rea. So was Edison. You know, Rea used to do a lot of futsal, but played as an outfield player in golf. I think, yeah, Edison got in one season more assists than, as a keeper than some of the outfield players. It was bonkers. Ridiculous. Eh? Ridiculous. Yeah. One of the things, I never knew this, Dave, and I thought I knew everything about you because I've been stalking you for the last five years,
34:57Nicky:but you actually nearly signed for United. I did, yeah. Tell us about that. Arsenal fans aren't singing now, are they? So I was at QPR and I was letting my contract run out and I was walking around the lake and Brian Robson phoned me up. He went, I've got someone who wants to have a chat with you. I was like, who? and it was Sir Alex and I was like shit I was like hello and then he was talking to me and he was saying look I'm going to come in for you at the end of the season I want you to be my goalkeeper I was like oh okay perfect so I put the phone down and in my head now I'm going to be a Man United player but Sir Alex wanted me on a free transfer so he didn't have to pay the fee Scottish
35:44within a week obviously some he got out and then Arsenal found out and they made a bid for me. So QPR were like, yeah, you're going to Arsenal because we're going to get the money. So I go to Arsenal to try and sign and it was just like two months before the end of the season. And Luki, John Lukic, who was one of my mates from Leeds way back, he wouldn't leave. So the transfer, it fell through. All the press were there. I was waiting to sign the contract and then he went, no, you can't because it's fallen through. And I was like, shit. So I now go back to QPR and I have to play for QPR. so I'm getting pelters off QPR fans and then we play Arsenal and then I'm getting pelters off Arsenal fans as well and they're all singing we all agree Lukic is better than Seaman and then they're all at me they're going you'll never play for Arsenal you'll never and I'm on the pitch and I'm thinking in my head I'm going I fucking will because I've already signed a contract
36:41I love that that's a fact with Arsenal at the minute and just the United connection and I know he's Barcelona but it's United is talk of Rashford going to Arsenal right would you like that move? yeah I would because I still think Rashford's got a lot to offer you know he's still very dangerous when he's on it but then straight away my head then goes who's he going to replace? we've got Martinelli and Trossard if they sign Rashford they're probably going to get rid of one of them two you know and at the moment it's tough you know when you've just won the league you know to start then selling your players that have actually won that league with you that's going to be tough so you know whether that happens or not I still think it would be an improvement but it's only if one of them two leaves the club I was just going to say that I think it would be an improvement on Martel I think Chossard has done okay I think Marcel had quite a poor season.
37:46He's not had as many games this season, yeah.
37:49Nicky:I think he'd be a perfect fit for Marcus at Arsenal. I do. I think I'd liken it to a little bit like a Welbeck when he went to Arsenal. I think it's a big club that they're used to playing for. Massive club, in fact. And I think Marcus has still got... Is that what, is he 28, 27? So is there no way he's going to stay at Man United? I think the only way he's going to stay at Man United is if they can't get a buyer for him. The only thing I'd worry about Marcus is his attitude, really. now look at Arsenal he's going to have to be part of the team he's going to have to work his bollocks off when he left United he didn't bother his arse do you know what I mean now we haven't seen loads of him at Barcelona but he's still he's done well for him hasn't he now if he's prepared mentally to work up and down and do all the team stuff the ability is ridiculous really we've seen him with little glimpses in England I was going to say when he comes on for England he's a phenomenal football player he's probably our closest thing to Mbappe he's unbelievable you've seen him recently from a young age and it's like he's nailed on to be one of the best in the world when he was like 18, 19 he was that good I do think we all have opinions on people but I think his natural body language doesn't help as well and I don't think it's all about can't be arsed he has got this body language that he can be a bit like and he needs to I'm not saying he wasn't lazy I'm saying he has that body language as well where people straight away go he's not arsed well I think he is arsed I think he just needs to understand and aesthetically, it doesn't look good, his body language, and I think if he gets that, over that, which looks like he's never gone into, because he's 27 now, he's not a kid, but for me, if I was Arsenal, I'd be signing all day long, I think Trossard, he's a really good squad player, I think Martin Elliott, replaced him with Rashford all day long, and I think what you're going to get, what a club would get for him, get him for, £30 million in modern day football, for Rashford, is nothing.
39:35Yeah, that does seem cheap, for someone like him, doesn't it? Definitely. Dave, spoke about moments playing for England the odd era let's talk about eras at Arsenal
39:53talk us through the one in the Cup Winners Cup right just like hang on can we just like put some context on all of it we've got nine winners medals by the way and I'd have more if it weren't for these two that's naive but to be fair to him he meant that because he tried that in the first half he tried it in the first half and he hit the bloody corner flag and then he tries it right at the end of the game and gets lucky when it comes in like that or like we're talking about and it were a flute the Ronaldinho one but when it's sometimes it's a bit like when you see a snooker player and a shot's on that looks so someone's got a new job someone's got a new job oh I just threw it in on it honestly you can't do anything and so and you go oh that's you can just you watch it on the table you go that seems doable those ones like that where they come that far through the air like what is it where it can't you just don't get you know because as soon as he eats it I know I'm in trouble because I'm in an advanced position where I've stopped so many through balls, you know, like stop goals that way and then somebody hits one like that and I'm pedalling back and I knew I was struggling to get there.
41:19Do you know,
41:20Nicky:Bex's famous one at Sellers Park? He tried about three times before, I remember. Was it Wimbledon? Wimbledon, but he tried about three times before and I got subbed and I was on a bench, shock. And literally, I remember he lined up to kick you and the mind just gone, fucking, fucking no, Beckham, not again. Because he tried it three or four times and completely messed it up. Of course, it went in and the rest is history. You used to do that all the time as a kid. You used to try that all the time. All the time. It's not a fluke. You just try it. The thing is, when it happens and it comes off, people remember him because they're spectacular.
41:55But they don't remember how many times they've tried it before. And how many times the goalkeeper's been in that advanced position, cutting out the through balls and stopping attacks like that. So it's just, two of them's not bad, mate. have you got any good saves he's made or is it just all about mistakes are we not talking about Euro 96
42:13Nicky:you know he's the best goalkeeper England's ever had listen I know I tell him that all the time I know that but you know for podcast purposes people don't want to hear that they want to hear their mistakes right Dave off on a slight tangent here the mods have informed me of something here you've had something specially made for you as part of an endorsement deal and before I show you what it is folks obviously footballers over the years they'll be attached to certain brands and everything else you've got Ronaldo Nike Poster Boy Messi Adidas Bex God all sorts undies aftershave you name it Pele erectile dysfunction which is a little bit of a random one we won't go there we must Second name, eh?
43:08It was a little bit of a random one. But there's one product, all of those footballing legends of Overloops, and you've firmly planted the flag in the ground here. I've gone for it this time with Motorway. The driving gloves. The driving gloves. These are real. That are also goalkeeping gloves, just in case. No, talk us through them, David. Talk me through how this come about. So I've partnered up with Motorway, and they're the UK's leading car selling platform. This is God. This is God. They decided to make some gloves that were driving gloves but also goalkeeping gloves. Because everyone needs a pair of them.
43:49Just in case. And they actually work because when I had these, I drove my fishing van home in them. But during filming, I actually tried them and they've got some decent grip on them as well. They're made out of proper leather. By the way, they've got 40 perforated holes in the back there for my 40 clean sheets in 75 appearances for England.
44:18The actual strap on the wrist is made from seatbelt material. You should have worn them against Brazil. I didn't even get the hand anywhere near it, mate. It's a bit of fun. and it's great. Are they selling well? No, no, we only did 11. So if you want a chance of getting one of the pairs of 11 signed by myself, go on the Motorway website. I'll let you try them on. Let's try them on. They're also signed. Oh, you signed these as well? Very nice. I'll look at one. Oh, hands off, Nicky. You'll have them in the tip. There you are. Here we go. They're proper letters. They were actually bespoke made by a lady that made them.
45:01I guarantee they won't make him say fuck off Oh my god look at that I've just got to tell this story So when Paddy was the goalkeeper at Soccer Aid I was coaching him And it was his first time that he'd tried it Paddy played at Soccer Aid? And he went to me I've got a bad knee so I'll go in goal I was like oh you think it's that clean easy do you? Yeah you know you're cheeky bastard So anyway So he gets his gloves on The first ball I just little volley at him like at his face and he caught it like that and I'm like Paddy try and get your hands behind it like this alright alright the next one I kick it again he goes like that he misses it it smacks him straight on the nose and then the blood just went everywhere thanks for highlighting my misery Dave right here we go you've been non-stop at me I'm gone I'm gone you I'm gone I'm going to kick it or throw it kick it obviously oh no oh here we go shall I get there Paddy Shall I get behind you?
46:01Paddy, get there. Get there. He's going to smash it.
46:14Paddy, feel the grip. Feel the grip. There you go. My testicles are in my scum and game. Feel the grip. I like to feel my penis again. Leave the gloves on. Oh, yes. I feel it, pal. You went too bloody low, you then. It's a great advert. There we are. it's a pity we couldn't have give a per out to someone in the room tonight actually how did they apply for them Dave? you have to go on the motorway website or on their social media and they'll find out everything they need to know there you go the motorway website people are they in the room? some are yeah the guy that's brought the gloves out he's got a few pairs on him so get him on the way out he won't pay him for this paddy by the way I was going to say do you get money off cars?
46:59I am available Oh, I like that. Good lad. Sell your car the motorway way. Right.
47:05Nicky:Sell your car the motorway way. It's non-stop. I'm here all night if you want. Right. Okay. Before we go, just a couple of questions. What's your best memory of the game? And you've had a long and very career and you've done it all, pal. But what's, if you could sit back and go, do you know what? That is the ultimate. that i go first i'll go with england and that will be 98 world cup because it was my first first world cup that i uh that i played in um and this is after euro 96 which i did did quite well in um but to play for my country in a world cup i remember going out we were playing tunis here in france and i've got total bloody goosebumps because i'm from rotherham we grew up with nothing you know and then even at like the age of 19 i got told i weren't good enough by the a team that I've always supported, Leeds.
48:00So then I had to go down to fourth division, Peterborough, and work my way back up. Then to get to playing for England in a World Cup, mate, honestly, it was amazing. What a feeling. What a feeling, yes. Brilliant. And then with Arsenal, like I said earlier, I've got nine winners' medals, but things like, we beat Man United at Old Trafford to win the league as well, which was really special. Well, I've been taking it all night, so I'm definitely going to start giving it. That's the end of the show anyway. But you know what, and I said to the lads earlier, I said, the funny thing, when we won at Old Trafford, but then Man United, they wouldn't let us in the players' lounge after the game.
48:46I've been rightly so. No, we're talking about that. That wouldn't have been us, that would have been the gaffer. That's a man, yeah, 100%. Don't let them in drinking our free beer. So what we did is we got all the champagne out of the dressing room because the Arsenal fans were still locked in the ground so we all took the champagne and went back out and sprayed it all over the fans. Yeah.
49:05Nicky:I never knew that. We went out. Do you play that game? Yeah. You say that because he knows he fucking didn't. No, I weren't sure if you played or not. Yeah, it was a mess that game. A few injuries actually. I think McKinney didn't play either. Yeah, we had a load out. That's why they won it. Well, I just thought I'd get that in. I gave you the semi-final one. Honestly though, All joking aside, I remember playing against Arsenal in them days. They were our barometer. They were the ones that we had to beat to go on and get on it. Forget Europe that few years. The biggest rivalry, the biggest team we played against, the toughest team was always Arsenal.
49:41Would you say that rivalry at the time, because I remember that, would you say it kind of went beyond the rivalry of Liverpool?
49:50Nicky:I think I only ever did in that tunnel with Roy. Other than that, I got on with every single Arsenal player. Well, I'm saying, did it go beyond the Liverpool? Yeah, I think it did. Oh, the Riders, because Arsenal were better. There was always nastiness between United and Liverpool, but Liverpool were never on the same level as Arsenal. That was proper going for league titles and trophies. If you went through the Arsenal team and the Man United team and you went goalkeeper, goalkeeper, there's an argument for who's the best. And that's the same with every position on the pitch. Keane, Vieira, Skolls, Petit, Henri, Reuben, Nistelroy.
50:20Nicky:There was always an argument of who you would choose. That's how close it was. so there's not many areas you get that way you put the two best teams against each other and people in a pub for example would have a different opinion on different positions usually you say well it's always going to be that player, that player, that player I think the biggest, funnily enough both teams were very similar you could win games of football a different way you could outplay a team, you could outfight a team I think both teams were just like that It's because we knew that if we didn't win it, they were going to win it and I'm sure that you felt the same you know it was that the standards that we set then were so high I even the other week I watched you when you did when you won the treble against Tottenham that was on Sky like you know retro and I watched the game and I was like this is a good game this is how football used to be not like it is now and I actually watched all the game not only was it Man United winning the treble it was Tottenham as well and I'm still watching it that's how good the game was though and the standards they were up there and it was a different game because the physicality was a lot easier and a lot better to watch I was going to say when you watch that game I can't remember it but when you watched it how many fouls were let go in that game yeah lots and lots but like there was crosses flying in there was through ball there's no crosses in football the team's tried to win games of football not just by possession fucking boring yeah it is boring isn't it we actually attacked each other it was every team in the league it wasn't just like the top teams every team tried to win a game have a right go at you I remember in our era when it was really against Arsenal it was always a tight little pitch it was like a war you never got more than about one second on the ball it was just it was unbelievable but they're the games that I always look forward to they were brilliant right I'm going to throw this out to the audience now we're going to play a game Dave called Fanily Fortunes right have you done that one as well?
52:21I'm not fucking taking credit for that, Dave. We surveyed the audience to ask their opinions on some football and some non-football related matters. You've just got to guess how they answered. Right, so first question. Which World Cup country does the best food? This is what the fans are saying. yeah right go on then Scholes we start with you China I don't know no India Italy India I'd say Argentina Argentina I'll go they're second I nearly went Italy but they haven't been in it for a while have they Brazil can't have two guesses you've had yours Argentina I just allowed Brazil get in on it second what are you I'll go France France third Mexico you fucking looked at my eye there's no way you've put Mexico out I swear
53:30Nicky:I swear I'm a kid he's not a fucking chance he's wanted that he's a cheating bastard you're not looking I swear to God I swear to God yeah Mexico 22 % Argentina 15 it's obvious isn't it tackles and tacos Chiquitos isn't it not burritos tacos obvious innit tacos oh the country that came last with 2 % England I bet yeah I can imagine that I'm not having that I like a roast dinner yeah chippy chippy fantastic stuff spam egg and chips spam egg and chips spam egg and chips spam egg and chips underrated let me tell you next question on Finally Fortunes We asked Listeners Who is The Gault The greatest Of all time Footballer Let me get this iPad up here This audience here Yeah What was it Look at the age The age demographic Of all time Maradona Yeah He's third What I think I'll say Messi Messi's number one Oh yeah Why is he not Are they not bothering me, Pele?
54:48Fourth.
54:49Nicky:Ronaldo's second. Ronaldo's second. Ronaldo's second. I don't know if it's R9 or... So Ronaldo, head of Maradona? Hey, I've not done it. No, no, that's what they said to me. Fucking hell, he's having a go at me. He's giving me the eyes, you're saying that. That way, that's it. Look that way. Fucking hell. Imagine him at weakest link. You know? Fucking offering Ann Robertson out. Fucking hell, yeah. God. Do you know who was last? and again it's a George Best great player didn't play couldn't play in World Cup yeah that's true there's no way Ronaldo's better than Maradona absolutely no chance which country has the best fans at the World Cup oh that's a good one yeah that's close Scotland are going to be there aren't they go on you go first Scotland are going to be there I love Brazil Holland are very good I've got a few oh wait we're right Norway, yeah.
55:45I was going to say Norway,
55:46Nicky:but looking at the audience, I think they say Scotland. Why, because they're all pissed? We've all got kilts on, do you not notice? I reckon they're saying Scotland. They're only there for a week as well, they shouldn't count, should they? Again. Have you seen the Dutch fans? No, they're unbelievable. Norway's brilliant what they do. Argentina fans are good as well. Cape Verde. Cape Verde. Fucking hell. That went down well, didn't it? It's only fucking half of them are on pitch. It's only about 20 people live there. Fucking hell, Cape Verde. I'll go Scotland. Where are they? Number one. Oh, there you go.
56:31Scotland. Number two, England. Number three. England. Number three, Argentina. Four, Brazil. Number five, Japan. Nothing to do with Norway. Norway's not in it. Norway's not in it. Japan, I forgot about Japan We've never done this before, Chats Namely because we've never done it in front of a live audience We're going to take some questions From people in the audience Would you rather win the World Cup Or the Champions League World Cup by a mile for me
56:59Nicky:We've already won it, so World Cup Oh
57:06Sorry, sorry Sorry I asked no fans I wish I had bloody won it Do you know what though? so Arsenal so Arsene Wenger when I was at Arsenal he would give us a piece of paper at the start of every season and he would say to us write in order of preference of what you'd like to win would he? all the English players went Premier League Champions League FA Cup League Cup all the foreign players went Champions League Premier League really? that's interesting and I knew still didn't do it I know we're getting closer second again that's a nice step now though isn't it it was always
57:46Nicky:for the first three or four years Premier League Premier League Premier League bread and butter and then it was the next challenge getting all that hurdle of the next one and that's what Arsenal's got to face that's what they want because they want to create history for the club obviously they've never won it and by the way they were close with you as well all joking aside they were close I know they got stick of how they played they couldn't play any other way you can't play them in an open game you couldn't play Did it play their own way? They got beat 4-5-0. Exactly. It was that far away from it.
58:16Yeah. Right, David, this is something I mentioned on a podcast a while back. Got myself into a little bit of a debate with a gentleman, but knows I've got someone who's keen on this sport. I'll ask you. What do you think about Paul and Nicky saying fishing isn't a real sport? No one said that. I'm not sure he said that. No, I didn't say that. Oh, you were saying it. He definitely said it. You both said it. I didn't say that. You both said it. No, he didn't say it.
58:42Nicky:I'll tell you exactly what I said. Go on. You said top five easiest sports. No, I never said that. Hardest sports. And he went fishing. I went, it's fucking fishing. All you do is do that. Just put it in the water. I said, it's not huckered up down the fur. There's more to it than that. Huckered up down the fur. It was obviously a slight, but what I'm saying, it's not as hard as a fucking ultramarathon, is it? No. You don't see anyone fishing, go like that, do you? No, my argument is, Dave, what I was trying to say is it's something you've never done before. Give it a go. How difficult it is. And I said fishing.
59:19If you don't know what you're doing, casting a thing, you're not catching a thing. No. It's a pastime. It's a way that I love to relax. Yeah. And I've done it for years and years. It's a lie.
59:31Nicky:It's a lie. What's a lie? What? If you've not done it before, you can't. I've done it. I've done it. And I caught it. And I can't fish. Oh, fucking hell. what were it Moby Dick or something it was a fucking blue shark off the coast of Cornwall I'll never forget I tied a bit of string around my toe and put it in water and out it come there was somebody with you telling you what to do no no I put it I didn't want to touch it when it started flipping around I was like I'm not fucking touching that so you rocked up through cast your lining not on me own you can't do it on your own because you don't know what you're doing I know that you're tying the knots and all that sort of stuff so there's a lot to learn oh I just I've got one no you're getting ready make one fuck off he'd do buy it oh yeah he just threw it in he's running his house yeah put a maggot on it in your goals got a pike bit of spam bit of spam sweet corn bollocks bollocks what's on this year right as a sport it's I just I have it I always remember England when I first started going to England even Dave's not calling it a sport a past time fishing is a sport oh not today we used to stay at Sopal House and I always remember when Dave used to go off with Gazza fishing all the time and they come down with their little pouches on and their waist and their pockets I think boring bastards going fishing time's almost up folks but hey a massive thank you for David joining us give it up for David Seaman
