In short
The hosts debate Manchester United’s early-season crisis after a poor performance at Fulham, arguing the squad lacks aggression and defensive solidity, and that recruitment and club leadership are the real problems. They also discuss whether Arsenal are still title favourites, VAR/discipline controversies (including a Declan Rice incident and a Phil Foden red), and praise Brighton’s “top-down” club model. They finish with football-themed banter and a “Match Phrase” quiz.
Guests (hosts)
Paddy and Scolzey (plus Paddy’s co-host “Gaz” is referenced for comments). They are Manchester United fans, with Scolzey described as a Fulham supporter and Fulham/United match-focused in the discussion. No other named guests appear.
Key claims
United are 20th in league sprinting and struggle to win the ball back; possession is fine but the “other side” (pressing/duels) is missing. Recruitment is “third/fourth/fifth best” and players aren’t at Man United level. The club’s ambition is only to secure European football, not win the league. Arsenal remain slight favourites; Brighton are a model club.
Notable examples
United’s slow, passive Fulham match; midfielders like Kobbie Mainoo/Tielemans/Casemiro-type roles are criticized for not winning the ball; playing a winger (Cunha) as a nine “kills him”; Brighton beat Coventry 5-0, knocked United out of the League Cup, then beat Arsenal; VAR inconsistency comparing Rice’s incident to Foden’s red.

1:00Nicky:Welcome to the good, the bad and the football, sponsored by Midnight, the betting app that's built different. So Paddy's running a bit late, to be fair. Scolzey might be down towards that. Not like him, is it? Not like Paddy at all, no, but I think that's more at me and you've got somewhat on. That's the most sensitive spoken app. The best he's looked, to be fair. But with him being a big Fulham fan, I think it's great to get Man United out of the way and sort it out before he starts chipping in. So Scolzey, the only one way to start here is the game yesterday. day what your thoughts around it yeah it weren't it weren't the best performances was it but it's I know Gaz Gaz's comments about 15 minutes after half time possibly a little bit strong but I think I've probably seen worse performances don't get me wrong I've always found Fulham a tough place to go and play football it's always up for it and it's always a tight little ground I don't know what it's like with a new stage stand there but the wind was always blowing off the Thames it's like tough place to go but for me I think the start of the game summed the whole game up it was really slow passive both teams walking around slow I think on commentary Neve said something along the lines of like there's no speed isn't it everyone's walking and that generated right through the game for me so to say it's the worst 15 minutes is like you say I agree it's harsh but it was bad it was very bad and that's not something associated with Fulham because it's a tight ground.
2:25You never think there's any space there, do you? But yesterday it looked like there was all the space in the world because neither team could really, didn't want to win the ball back. It's like you have it for five minutes and we'll have it for five minutes. But that's just what United are at the minute. That's the makeup of the team. I think Cobby, Mino and Tielemans, they're never going to really win you the ball back. They're never going to be aggressive to win the ball back. they're very much the same player really technically brilliant can pass a ball of course can receive a ball but when you talk about the nitty gritty horrible things of games it's just not in them
3:06Nicky:we can also put Bruno in that category can't you the three of them are very brilliant footballers you know possession wise you've not got a problem with any of the three of them but the other side of the game which is massive especially when you've got to go away we just don't seem to have it I mean I think some of the stats I was in the 20th in the league I don't really get into stats I don't like them but 20th in the league in sprints, 20th in the league in sprinting times. I mean, 17%, sorry, 17th in percentage of possession. It doesn't look right like what Man United is. And if you think about, I mean, I said it at the start of the season, I thought, and it's more with my heart than my head, are you going, I quite fancied us this year.
3:41Nicky:We've got a good midfield going. But you're right, the other side of the game, as in the side that I was, like, obviously my game was like. But when you say fancied us, what do you mean? To be a lot better than last year. I didn't think France was going and winning a league I just thought it would be a lot better and last year towards the end of the season and we spoke about it plenty of times it's a lot easier for a manager to have it as a temporary in charge than it is fully in charge we're obviously seeing that now with Michael and I was sat on the whole day you're seeing Tillemans come in for 30 odd million that's a great sign in my opinion but he's still not that dominant midfield that's going to go and win your games Cobb I think is doing very very well I'll be interested when Buleba comes into the starting team and see what he looks like.
4:23Nicky:Physically, total different specimen. But yeah, yesterday, it looks like, again, we just don't want to go and get the ball back. We don't want to win it high up, just sit back, happy passing the ball. I think the only ones who can possibly win it back, funnily enough, are our forwards because they're quick. Do you know what I mean? They're quick and aggressive. Cunha and Nibuomo especially. Sesco's injured again, they just can't keep the outfit, which is disappointing. and yeah look who do you blame for not blame but recruitment wise it feels quite sad to say this but they're a club they're not trying to win the league with recruitment they brought with Santos, Belieber they brought players in look physically they may be better but Santos well did you play 11 games for Chelsea.
5:19He played 50 million quid from his, I don't think, has he started a Premier League game? He might have started the one at Hull. But, he's not getting into the team. Now, Belieber, he might make a bit of difference, but again, if you're recruiting at the start of the league for Manchester United, it should be for players that you think you can go and win the league with. I think they're a million miles. I think they're just trying to consolidate from what Michael did last year, which, it's hard to get your head around that because we're United trying to buy an Elliot Anderson probably who chose somebody else now that's a sign in where you think that might help you get better a lot better I think players they've bought aren't making them any better I also think
6:06Nicky:playing Cunha as a nine it kills him he's not a nine but it kills him in himself he's nowhere near the player he is when he's playing off the side We haven't got a number nine other than Sesko. Obviously, Zerchke, but he's going, he's staying, he's going, he's staying. He'd come on the last few games, doesn't look anything to me. Anyway, Neyerman United, number nine. Diallo, they missed Diallo. Diallo, we miss him. He's obviously one of the players that can go and affect a game in the final third. Midfield, we spoke about. Good footballers don't have the other side of the game that can go and win the ball back and dominate a game.
6:39Nicky:Possession-wise, ability-wise, they're up there. They're massively up there. Bruno must be pulling his hair out playing in that because he wants to be up there the second third of the field and showing what a top, top player is creating goals, scoring goals. You've got to say as well the back four just look like just an average black four. They're all good players individually but as a back four, the right back, is he going to get you into top? Give chances away all the time. Yeah, top two, top three, no. You know, Harry's coming towards the end of his, not the end of his career I would say but he's passed his best but it's quite easily saying that.
7:15Nicky:Martinez is Martinez we know what he is he's a good footballer very good footballer but I don't think he's a dominant centre back Luke you know what you're getting with Luke you're getting his three or four decent games an injury kicks in he's misses a few games he's back in he's back out so the back four for me is a massive massive problem but as big as that problem is the number nine they've got how can Man United have one centre forward that they can go on Ryan who's injured who's what a shin injury is it a shin how do you injure your shin you have a break you shouldn't have a broken leg you have a break your shin or you or you play you don't just put your shin pads on because you put your shin pads on you put your padding on i don't quite get it but without knowing what that is it's really tough to discuss that on but yeah the makeup of man united squad in general is what you're getting michael must be really disappointed with what's happened in the summer now michael's never going to show that and he can't come out and say that of course he can but i reckon behind the scenes he thinks he's been let down a little bit especially with no defence, okay, they brought two midfield players in, but they're not two midfield players that you say they're going to instantly make this team better and challenge for the league and go on from where, because what Michael did last year was very, very good, but the most important time for Michael, I thought, was the start of the season.
8:33He said that's fine. We've said it. These games now, up until December, January, it's where you put a marker down, it's where you it gives you the foundation to go on for the rest of the season and see where you're going to challenge now they've had a look it's not a great start it's only five games and now and look they are going to win loads of games of football with the players they've got of course they are it's just a lack of ambition for me saying Man United are not trying to win the league they've gone to a season not trying to win the league and that's you know you look at
9:07Nicky:Man United as a team as a whole a squad you know and you've got to include the coaching staff and Michael into that. What will be a good season for them from this point? For me, it's like, you've got to just try and stay in them European. That's from where we're at now. We've got to try and stay in the European places. You've got to. That's got to be tough. That's got to be very loose. And that's what I'm trying to say. They're not trying to win the league. They're just trying to stay in the European positions. For a club at Man United, it shouldn't be acceptable. I thought this season, they go at it money-wise.
9:39Nicky:They're going for a load of money at it and go, right, we're going to get three or four top, top wow signings and go Man United are back. They've got to remind you that they've got faith in, they give them a contract. No matter whether you like him, Michael, or you don't like him, if you're a fan or you're not, they put the faith in him and give him a job and give him a contract. So go and back him. I think that's what the point that I'm at with Man United now is, it's really, listen, you come on these podcasts, you go and speak in the media, you go to watch the game as a fan. You can't not have a pop-up what's going on at that football club.
10:08Nicky:It's just, it's not right. you're looking at the way you know the way it's run from the top down I don't see what any of the transfer windows look like you can't go and do what we've said forward line one's window middle midfield center next window I know next window Michael don't worry in January we're going to get a back four or a few players for the back well by the way you could be at 15th 16th by then because it's not looking great and you're looking at teams that were playing who come and play against Man United now and we've said it again there's no fear they don't fear anybody if I was playing looking at Man United squad now and lining up against them the only player you're going to fear is Bruno he's the only player that you're going to fear and go we've got a game on today he's a top top top player the rest of them are good players but they're not looking like they're not looking like they're going to frighten anybody on the other side of the pitch players that you probably never even heard of playing for lesser teams if you like they're just going to go and play against Man United like it's not Man United it's just a badge at the minute that's got a massive history we have unbelievable players that I've played over the years and we're still hoping that we're going to go and blow teams away and we don't and as a fan that's the bit that gets me I no longer think it's a no brainer we're going to win this game it's an absolute no brainer you're going to put your life on this game you're going to get one it doesn't and it's becoming a point where now who is it who's going to be blaming it who can you point the finger at and for me it has to be the people upstairs that are employing people that are putting the people into place to go and pick the managers or pick the players or pick the coaches because I don't understand it.
11:46Nicky:I think the Barada, the CEO, he said they're going to, they're going to win the league by 2028. That's never going to happen the way it's going. Never in a million years is that going to happen. No, you don't get an impression. And without literally ripping them to shreds, it has to be said that they've come in, they gave Ten Hag an extra few years on his contracts that didn't work he obviously went and got two other managers after that and it's still not working so there's got to be a real question being asked is it is it being run right off the pitch in recruitment and then obviously that translates onto the pitch so it's a massive big problem i think yeah i don't think we can keep blaming managers all the time you can't just keep going through managers like we are doing i think recruitment will have an awful lot to answer for especially after this summer I think they've I think what they're doing are they looking at these top targets like you know you're talking Morgan Rodgers for 100 and odd million you're talking Elliot Anderson going for 100 and odd million we seem to be whether we're going for them I don't know it feels like we did try and get Elliot Anderson but obviously Charles Man City
13:00it feels like we're buying players just for the sake of it who I'm not going to look believe we've got to give him a chance I don't know Santos I don't know they played 11 games for Chelsea last year believe it I don't think he had a great year for Brighton last year he was good the year before it feels like they're settling for third fourth fifth best signings and that isn't good enough now I'd rather just keep the money and say sure we can find someone in the academy who can do what these lads are doing do you know
13:32Nicky:a sad thing as well you're saying that's got but even if we did have the funds which we must have to go and get an Elliot Anderson and all these big players the saddest thing for me is they're not coming to us that's the saddest thing no we're not in the we're not in that shop window we're not whether we like it or not we're not in the shop window to say we're going to go and put pitch for the best players in Europe and we're going to be there or thereabouts now you get one that'll go and go to Chelsea because I've always been a Chelsea fan since the day I was born and my wife's going to watch Chelsea with my granddad but the sad facts of Man United is when we in all the time I've known Man United even when we weren't winning stuff we still was in for the big, big boys that come to Man United.
14:10Nicky:Certainly in my time and your time any big player that come available We've discussed that in there, haven't we? In Europe or even the ones that aren't available you still want to bully the club with money and brought them to Man United. Now I don't see us going and getting a top, you know, a real top player from anywhere in Europe. You don't. They always pick somewhere else. They don't have that market in the world. They'll go Arsenal, they'll go Chelsea, they'll go City, they'll go Real Madrid, they go Barcelona they go Bayern Munich and that's a bit for me as a Man United fan where you're just like going so what's the next one down and I think that's where recruitment really really really should be kicking in because even though we was in for the big hitters during our time the recruitment team went and got the rough diamonds they went and got players that you never really heard of all the Scandinavian lads that come in that ended up being superstars for the football club I think you can do that when you've got a proper team you can add little bits and these players might have been alright if they had top players it feels like the buying players to come in behind players but they're not coming in behind players because they're expected to be the top ones now and I just don't think they're at that level and I say Man United level which is expected to go in the Premier League it's not going to happen expecting to go far in the Champions League I think you're right it's just where the club's at and I mean it reflects in the fact that a young boy JJ Gabriel who I don't know too much about.
15:34Nicky:I think he's 15, 16, 16. 15, isn't he? Asking to leave Man United. I mean, that in itself is, what's happening there to not give these young boys the vision of where they're going to be in two or three years? I don't get it. Who's speaking to him? You say his dad's an issue, don't you? I'm pretty sure he is. I think a lot of the parents are in football as an issue. Look, I don't know many details about this, but I'd be pretty certain it's all about money. It will be, won't it? Yeah. But I think also about money, it's got to be about where's your journey. I'm sure when you were a young kid and you were signing Man United, you'd look at someone and go, that's my journey.
16:12Nicky:You speak to people, the coaches, we had great coaches around, Brian Kidd, Eddie Carrison, Jim Ryan, obviously the manager above that who was talking to us as well all the time, but that's a really important part of the football club. And I worked at the football club in that area for a long time and it's like a big part of that football club is bringing young players through and apparently he's the next big thing. Now, the flip side of that coin is if you're going to have a young player that's going to do that to the club like Man United and try and dictate at 15, 16, if I'm going go, just go.
16:47Nicky:Go because we don't want characters around there. It's amazing we're talking about, Alain, it's brought so much headlines. He's not even a footballer yet. No, no, he's not. He's 15 years old. Now, look, there's great potential. of course there is but this is just it's purely financial and some of the kids these days at 14, 15, 16 years of age and you can understand parents can be looked after for life with a son out of a year I do get it it changes the whole life there could be houses put into that situation jobs, money how much will these kids be on I bet some of these kids can be on 25, 30 grand a week mums and dads getting 2, 3 million pound it's scaring it it's scaring now look if he's staying at Man United now They won't get that, will they?
17:31I think they'll get it eventually. Yeah, I do. But they can't see the bigger picture. I think the other thing that might be, not going against him, but what they'll see, they'll see someone like Max Dowman, for instance, playing at 15, 16 years of age of when he started. And they'll think, if he's getting a chance at Arsenal, why is my son not getting a chance? Look, it's ridiculous. And Michael, he should be at the, the kid should be at the right club that is seen down the years, over the years, people coming through, young players coming through, they do get looked after. You get looked after well eventually.
18:06Nicky:No matter what club he goes to, he's not going to get that straight away anyway. It's not. It's legal. You can't get it. You'll get it. You might be trying to manipulate it, but you're not going to get it. Not until he's 17. But for the kid as well, if you're a football club, Blackman United, you've got to try and do your best to keep your best players, no matter what age they are. But I do think that, and I might be, you know I might be looking at it if we wrote into glasses about what I know about the football club and when I was there as a kid and growing up with you lot or even working now it can't be a better place for a kid to develop and it's like and when you're that good as a young kid and you're looking at the squad that we've got and the way we're playing you're going to get in a lot earlier than you would do if you're going to be going to a there's words about Real Madrid, Barcelona or wherever these clubs are being spoken about this Gabriel but basically where's a better place to be to go and go and blow it away at Old Trafford with a team that's not doing too great yeah that's a really good point he's probably got more chance of playing man massive more if he's going to go to Real Madrid and push out Mbappe and this is junior isn't that not a chance I bet there's kids like four or five kids Barcelona Real Madrid who are just exactly the same as him okay schools here Arsenal Brighton what an amazing week for Brighton I mean what a football club that that is if you can get into details about how that's run and how unbelievably good it is but they beat Coventry 5-0 they knock Man United out of the League Cup and then they go and beat Arsenal what a week for them what a week I saw the goals of the Arsenal game I watched the United-Brighton game they were brilliant with and probably rested and five or six of the better players I saw it last commentary they were brilliant it's these Brightons Brentford's they're so impressive at what they do and again it is a little bit easier for them to recruit players I suppose because they can go under the radar a little bit the pressure isn't on them as much where United obviously overpay for players and they have to but the way they play football against them I've just never I can't see how Arsenal are going to get beat 3-0 by anybody this season absolutely and it was a proper it was a proper performance it was you'd be a little bit concerned if you were at Arsenal and Arsenal's biggest strength you say defensively really so to concede the three goals but like you say you've got to give Brighton credit the manager done a brilliant job Absolutely right away we're talking about Man United about top down top down at Brighton it's the way they recruit the way they a lot of it's analytical a lot of it's like money ball kind of thing but they get the right players in they do an unbelievable job and where you think they were a few years ago I mean the training complex don't know if you've ever been there training complex is phenomenal I mean there's a housing project not project housing estate facing the training ground and I heard I'm pretty sure they bought the first row of all the houses on the estate no no just they're going to rent them out but just so they know who's in the house and they'll spy on their coaching sessions honestly yeah a bit like that yeah maybe but yeah a proper football club that for me is run from top down unbelievably well and what they did to Arsenal don't forget PSG couldn't do that in the final they couldn't do what Brighton has just gone and done and the way they play football, the way they set up, it's just a good football club to be part of at this time.
21:31Where are we with Arsenal and you think, are they still favourites? Still got to be slight favourites I suppose
21:36Nicky:haven't they? Yeah I think they're slight favourites. I think that'll be a hiccup, a blip. I think if you look about what happened last year, the way they defended, they never conceded too many goals, they went on and won the league. We're moaning about the way they go on to play and it's all too defensive and then we moan but we're talking about them losing three goals and what's going on but I still think they'll be favourites or City are up there because they can just score for fun no matter how many goals you can see but I think Arsenal are still slight favourites just because there's nobody anywhere getting any better really you think the art of defending's gone in the Premier League I think it's always been an exciting league for goals especially but when you talk about the best defensive team probably in Europe Arsenal and they go and can see three goals Man City can see three goals Chelsea score three goals Man United look like they concede all the time do you remember when we won a title the first big defeat you had after that I don't seem to remember it I'm sure it happened but I don't remember a big defeat happening so it was straight after winning the league you know it's coming no one's invincible we had some big defeats didn't we at times as well you think of Southampton conceding Newcastle conceding I think Chelsea Chelsea won so I think we'd lost three games Roy might have been standing at half actually I think God it's a crisis but then it's up to not so much the managers sometimes even players will have a sit down meeting won't they and like come on we need to get this sorted out and thankfully we always seem to find the answer weather teams like Arsenal will I think they will find the answer of course they're too good not to but especially going into an international break as well that's going to be a long three weeks for them.
23:19Nicky:I think Arsenal are a total difference of Man United. Arsenal will not want this break because they'll want to go again and prove that's a blip. Man United will want the break so they can settle it down, they can stop the noise, Michael can start looking at some dynamics within training and obviously a lot of the players will be gone but I don't think Arsenal want this break now. They do want to go again and try and make sure everyone knows this is a blip, this is not happening again for the rest of the season. Yeah, they'll want to play to them. Our test will be... That's got to be a long three weeks.
23:46Nicky:Yeah, it'll be a long three weeks for than 100%. What do you think about the rice one? Well, volley in the curtain. So send it off. And surely, how can VAR not see that? We see all the pictures again after it, honestly. Surely they can, I think you've got a yellow card anyway, but it can be upgraded to a red. Well, I think VAR is the biggest myth ever. It's like, we can get it right with a video, but ultimately, human beings are still saying whether they think that's a sending on for, is it violent conduct or is it a yellow card? and I just think look I love Decker and Rice he's my kind of player I really really think he's a top top player seems like a really good lad and I've done loads of stupid things on a football pitch kicking out and stuff but it's just stupid isn't it you just know you do that you watch it at the night time at all my match you think what a dick I look there it's just stupid and how we've both done it yeah but how how can Phil Foden get sent off last week for that for what he did and then Decker and Rice not get sent off it's worse it's ten times worse that is frustrating especially when you're getting beat at the time and but we've done it loads of times everyone does it it's just you you get angry don't you yeah you get annoyed and you end up booing somebody do it too many times we've all done it but the fact of the matter is var are there exactly for var to be there and not not have the review i don't know well folder now is not playing for five weeks because he's got sent off at city he's got international break not playing for five weeks he must be watching that going how can I get that and he's not get it's wrong and it's just no matter what we say about VAI it's still human error it's still human error because literally they're looking at a screen and they're going oh I don't think that's a violent conduct that's a yellow card but I think definitely Foden's is violent conduct because it's ridiculous he's kicked out oh and Bruno's is not violent conduct because he's not really kicked him that hard it's just like what's going on it's just an absolute disgrace really is.
25:42Nicky:But yeah, it's a team Brighton that I think from the top down is run the way that every football club should be run in this country. The only thing you don't want to be too critical, they could do a win in something, couldn't they? You look at teams who you'd say might have been around like a Crystal Palace. Last year they actually won, did they win the FA Cup last year or the year before? They won that European conference oh he did yeah so that's the only thing it's okay being brilliant great to watch having a high finish in the league but I'm sure as a fan they want a day out at Wembley they want to get to a final yeah I think that's a fan thing I think you're right they want Wembley they want to go and get the trophy however they think you need something to show from all of us their sustainability project which I'm sure it's just phenomenal but that has to be the next step now but they are trying to win a trophy yeah I agree but I think their first step was get a new training ground complex built they've done that I think they're building a women's stadium as well I think they get stability they're now a Premier League club aren't they they're not a team that's going to go yo yo up and down they're a Premier League stable club if you want an example of how to run a football club then yeah it's brilliant like you say recruitment wise the money they get for the players it's phenomenal reselling the way you do it's a business isn't it of course it is that's a business and it's run really well they keep producing you talk about recruitment people at football clubs of course you do look at the difference between Man United to Brighton now don't get me wrong it is a bit easier at Brighton of course it is because the spotlight's not on you as much but still to keep producing players as you are doing is brilliant hey you up hey you up hey you up oh morning afternoon here's our pal what time is it school run dad's here everyone alright morning pal morning pal what you alright sorry about the early start Paddy we know you got a lot on my bum wouldn't run in that shop look at this guy I mean he comes out a lot he's been doing well he's here more than you you've come in at a great time because it's the perfect question for you what did you think of Gabrielle's dive I just want to say about this happening a lot.
28:08It's ridiculous. What is it, do you think he's like on some kind of thing with VAR or what? Like, he seems to get away with stuff more than anyone else at the minute. Yeah, it does. Does that happen with certain? Kicking the head, yeah. It gets, yeah, loads of people. We never get, we make one tackle, we got booked. There's people, mate. If I said a lot, morning someone on the pitch I'd get booked. People, nice people like James Milner like we had last week. He could, he could boot someone on ten times and never get a buck do I mean it's just reputations you know you said kicking the head it weren't even that it were a boot in the face before this

30:14Now it's time for a game, powered by our friends at midnight, the betting app that's built different. Lads, as you loved doing the quiz the other week, got another one. A quiz with a slight difference, not so much an answers thing this. Well, it is an answers, but you'll know what I mean when I get into it. This is called match phrase. Yeah. Clever play on the words of... Mastermind. Catchphrase. Catchphrase. Mastermind. Mastermind. There's no masterminds in here. This one's based on quotes from people from the world of football who were built different. Eric Cantola. Question one. Who was Sir Alex talking about when he said this to the media?
31:03do I have to do the accent? Is that what he said? I was saying, on your go. On your go. I'm no fucking talking to you. Wait a minute. You pressed the button to answer it. Go on. Well, so did you. I didn't press the button. You pressed it straight away. No, it was me. No, that was before saying that cancer and I messed up about it was him. Arsene Wenger. No. Go on, carry on then. I get the full quote. On your go. I'm no fucking talking to you He's a fucking great player Yous are all fucking idiots
31:43On you go
31:46Nicky:Don't give any more clues I'm no fucking talking to you He must have been someone Who's like a really good player He's a fucking great player Teddy Sharingham No Who are you talking about or talking to talking about lad go on who the fuck is this Viron Viron yeah yeah they've only never got around a million years that was hard work they're famous quotes aren't they Chris worst quote I've seen I was going to say when I sat in I thought you're going to get pelters lads you've dropped a bullock again you've been on AI can you do the quiz and send it the day before I'll do the quiz and I'll do these in the future as well but I'll go on to the second one who said in 2009 can't do the accent here because I'm giving it away.
32:32Yeah. It's French, isn't it? Oh, I don't. Is he? No, I don't think he is. Is he? He might be. Just say it. He is. I want to talk about facts. I want to be clear. He's Spanish. Rafa Benitez. Spanish. I said he weren't French. You just said he is.
32:54Nicky:I said he's not French. Paddy, Paddy, can we just read the fucking questions out? Because you're giving him more clues. Read the question I said he's French That's clear I thought he was throwing Oh It's a fucking different country Say he's not French Say he's not French You'll help No I said he's Right You're right Rafa Benitez When Liverpool were in a Total race with United In 2009 Which United went on to win Question three Can you complete this Quart from From Thomas Tuchel Tommy Tutel Can you complete this Quart from Thomas Tuchel Recently Talking about England's 3-2 win over Mexico in the World Club yeah I'm talking about getting to the German man say yeah that's good I texted a friend after the match and she just wrote he should have had some grass to keep the feeling from that stadium or something in the spirit is that the actual quote is that no no no is that the actual our summit our summit no eat some grass our summit That's not a quote, is it?
34:01I was just getting, I regret that I did not, what? After the match, eat some grass. He's got it right. Worst fucking quiz. I went a little bit alo-alo though, didn't I? Did you know that? I was just pissing by. Pissing by? He was brilliant. He wasn't in that French copper. Right. Good mooning.
34:28right question four uh which club is latam ibramovich talking about here i'm fucked for the swiss accent i don't even know how that goes swiss swiss swish is he swish he's who swiss he doesn't speak like that who's swiss swish do you mean Swedish Swedish Swiss lads it's early it's fucking early lads I've not had any breakfast I've come straight in is lads aren't that famous Swiss person
Read the full transcript
35:07lads it's fucking I've had no brekkie I've got straight Scandinavian just do Scandinavian three kids getting to school let me get in who's the chef on Muppet Show he was Swedish wasn't he don't know go on right go on no in fact Zlatan's more this one day I was in the hotel with the team before a game this is I like Sven going excellent what was the question Barcelona fucking hang on no no no you leave it then you've got to stay dead now He's out. It's all right. He won't get it anyway. I got thirsty, so I opened the minibar, had a throat juice. A throat juice? Some time went by. What's a throat juice?
35:57My payslip arrives. Normally, I don't look at it, but that time, I don't know why, I was curious, and I realised they'd taken a pound off my monthly wage. Man United. Correct. Hey. What the fuck was that? It's embarrassing. I got the fucking country wrong for starters, lads. You'd meet me halfway. Here's the last one. Thank God. Who said this? Oh, right. Get the accent right.
36:31I don't like... Oh, I've gone scouts. I don't like compliments. It's me. Yes! I mean, fucking bitch.
36:41Nicky:I'm going to apologise at midnight for that quiz. that was fucking terrible it was terrible terrible I don't want you to shoot the messenger yours is better I know they're on the phone lads they read it go but what these lads they get they get they get a bee in their bonnet and they've got to do it there's nothing on that quiz I'll finish the quote I don't like compliments I'd rather like people have a go at me just to prove them wrong all schools well there you go that was match phrase probably a quiz you'll never see come back on this podcast but it was Powered by Midnight built for no not like the old school bookies quick to use simple to navigate with no messing about remember you've got to be 18 or older and please gamble responsibly Brentford Brentford hey what a team Brentford 3 Chelsea 0 do you know what I want to sell the teams and when you not when you play two older players it does help but when I saw Welbeck and Welbeck's brilliant and Jordan and Denson playing in the same team I thought you couldn't be playing against the worst team because Brentford there's so much energy about him do you know what I mean so much athleticism I thought that is the worst thing that could happen to him It sounds crazy saying it but do you think Jordan Denson's like a these days obviously great career still doing it but is he a A 45 minute man?
38:14Maybe even, not even that long. Really? Maybe a last 20 minutes, 25 minutes, unless you're playing that League Cup games where you say, we've been there at 35, 36, 37. You're a million miles away from where you should be. You can use your experience to get through games. Of course you can, but I think these days, especially now, it's more of a young man's game. I think... And you will get found out. You will get found out starting a game.
38:42Nicky:I think Jordan will know that as well, 100 % he'll know it. And he's gone into that football club, and I think it was a good signing by the manager, because if you look at the previous years, a lot of young lads looked a bit unstable, not really a team, individuals. And he's obviously been brought in to help manage that changing room, as well as obviously play a few minutes certain games. I never expect him to be starting a Premier League game. No, no one does. I don't think he would really deep down. Do you know what? Is it injuries or what? It doesn't. Yeah, it must be. yeah it must be um i'm letting anto fernandez go that weren't the best of shots did you see him and i don't care how old you are how much you look after yourself being at that age and playing in the premier league now especially you've got to be a machine you've got to be athletic in this field i mean you look at you don't get away with it i'm afraid you get found out get away with against man united that's about it yeah probably if you're Jordan Henderson and Chelsea come in for you.
39:39Nicky:Oh, you're not saying no? You're not saying no, are you? No, he's gone there. What a move for him. He's going to go and live in London for a year or two, 18 months, whatever it might be. But he knows he's going to go in there. He's supposed to imagine and imagine we're known in Liverpool and it's like, I need you to bring this team together. We've got too many young lads. We've got too many splinter groups who want to bring it all together. I think it's a great signing. But it's just, it doesn't look right when he's starting for Chelsea. No, and I think he'll know himself. He'll think, I shouldn't really I remember I did it again in City when I might have been 36 and the manager actually picked me and I thought I shouldn't be playing this game I shouldn't be starting this game maybe last 15 20 minutes if you need to calm down a little bit and I never got the ball I never touched the ball this is it's got to be demoralising I just knew it was too much I shouldn't I shouldn't because in your head you think it's like in anything don't you as you get a bit older you think well you can still do it in your head and you're like, oh Jesus.
40:37And then when you're playing another one, like Danny at 35%, then when there's two in your team, you're thinking, bloody hell. And I bet when Keith Andrews saw that team sheet, he's like that.
40:48Nicky:But we said before he started the season, their big issue is defensively and goals conceding. They're conceding goals after goals after goals. There's goalkeepers now. There's a goalkeeper who we're all saying could be signing of the season. He's conceded 10 goals in four matches. When he first signed, he's looking forward to winning the league but I'd like to see I'd like to see the amount of shots he's had against him compared to what he had last year at Villa yeah so I was saying before the art of defending the Premier League has gone especially at Chelsea whether the attackers are that good I don't know but you look at every club and we never thought we'd say this about Arsenal that might just be a one off I would have thought it is a one off the Arsenal but every team look vulnerable defensively Man United do Liverpool do although they kept a clean sheet do you know before you come Paddy we were talking about Brighton as well I think they're very much like Brentford these what you would perceive to be lower clubs and they are in fan base and they're smaller clubbers than the top you know the big six or whatever you want to speak about but what they are when you go and play against them now there's no way you're going to go to Brentford and Brighton and these places and think we're going to go and beat these and maybe the manager back in Audi might have arrested two or three players as well for the next big game these are proper teams that know how to play football at home and they beat people up with power pace aggression they never stop pressing they press high they do all the things that some of the clubs that we've been involved in I know you're talking about Chelsea we're speaking about Man United they don't seem to do that no more am I allowed to say Brighton top four of course you are is it ridiculous no I don't think it is I think they're a really good like that manager that team considering how many players they sell Scores, sorry to interrupt you, Paddy.
42:34Nicky:Scores mentioned that their next big challenge is to go and win something because what they've done is stabilise themselves. They're a proper team. They're a proper business, if you like. From the top down, they produce and they work the right way a football club should be. You feel like you get greedy with it a bit, don't you? Their fans will be happy, don't get me wrong, but still there's nothing better than winning something. Oh, yeah. Even a day out at Wembley, whether they do well in Europe. All you've got is if they go and win something, then get carried away with themselves and go and throw loads of money at players and the business model and then they get relegated.
43:09They'll never go away from that business model. No, they shouldn't. As long as they've got
43:12Nicky:the same people running it, they'll never go away from that. No, I remember the famous thing with Leeds. Remember when Leeds got to the semi-final at Champions League and then was it Ristdale? They started throwing loads of money at players and even players that were already at the club for renewals and then straight away they don't get the next step up and they go all the way down. Brighton, and obviously and Brentford we're talking about now, phenomenal business model. Absolutely amazing. Did you say, I'm sure you said it right, it might have been last week or the week before you said it, if you could pick up the entire infrastructure at Brighton and put it in United, you would.
43:46Yeah. It makes sense, doesn't it? I mean, they don't seem to get much stronger. There's a different pressure of it. It's easier for Brighton to sign players. If you know what I mean. Sign players that nobody's, I see a lot of their players last week. I didn't know half of them. So they always go under the radar with what they're spending for players. Now, if they're at Man United, you're not going to play for like, unless it's 60-something million. You're just not because of the tax that comes with that. Do you know what I mean? Because it's a big club. Now, you have to say what they're doing is right.
44:24Of course it is for Brighton. Would that work at a Man United? I'm not sure it would. Just looking at Brentford Chelsea, you were saying about Fernandes going to City and what have you have you ever seen anyone leave when at your times at United where you go you've never you've never replaced Peter Schmeichel no not never but it took a bit of time Schmeichel yeah he's Schmeichel because he was such a presence on the team it went to Edwin was it really how many did we have in between them who was it Tim Howard Bozzi Tim Howard Boznich was Fabian Fabian Fabian De Gea I thought De Gea
45:04Nicky:did no De Gea was after Edwin and did very well of course he was of course he was Massimo Taibbi Massimo yeah bloody hell I forgot about that name we were never like we you lose Man United you lose big players all the time we lost Christian around we lost David Beckham never really affected us did it I think everyone seems to come when you know you've lost a big player I think everyone comes together even more don't they I suppose we'll show these people it's not all about him do you know what I mean but losing Peter was yeah Peter was the biggest one Cantona was a big one but they had players to replace unbelievable players in and around that's what I say there's always players to replace outfield players I think but goalkeepers shows you the importance of the goalkeeping position that's the first time I've agreed with you in two years but you're right it took a long time for me to win that argument when did you ever get a phone call I didn't but to be fair at the time mobile phones weren't really dingy I think Sir Alex did he not have your number yeah he didn't have me landline he sent a letter but I never got that facts couple of managers are finding themselves under pressure already as well what are we five games in I think that tough school it's a tough school that international break has come at the right time I don't think Farouk we'll come back after it and it someone will be sacked I don't think that five games do you reckon?
46:32Tata might go after weekends he's got to be under big pressure I hope so just so I don't have to look at his hair who do we think and it sounds crazy saying after five games but that's the modern football now who do you reckon after the international break has got probably about another three games
46:55Nicky:you'd say the Zerbi if he didn't have such a big... I could read you in mind then. I'm not saying you were thinking. I'd say he deserved it if he didn't have such a big contract behind him. Because they can't afford to sack him, basically. That is... I like Tottenham as a club as well, but what's going on there? I don't know. Do you know what? When he signed and stayed up and everyone's like, oh, it'll be great. How about that? And the money they've spent... Everyone's saying Champions League. What about when they scored the goal and they're all cheering, like, finally, and they got disallowed?
47:23Nicky:You're going, oh, God. They are bottom of the league, aren't they? yeah they're at bottom do you know what I do think eventually I think he will do I think he's a brilliant manager I do he's probably not showing it he's some great players did you think I was thinking about I don't want to say say it you ask the question I could see it in his eyes I think I think he was thinking I wasn't even thinking of anyone I think he was thinking Michael Carrick no I wasn't I could tell in your eyes no because we've actually said that you can't keep sacking Man United. I don't. What's the point? Because we end up in the same boat all the time.
47:59Exactly. And also, start sacking players.
48:04Nicky:The people above Michael. I like that. The people above Michael can't be seen to sack him because they're basically saying, I got it wrong. They're not going to do that. I think he's hitting it all head there. The people above are letting him down. I wonder what would happen, obviously, if your squad would be a thread-bitter, but I wonder what would happen if players were treated like managers where you went, rape. who's your lad who went from United to Chelsea he's now at Villa his name's just gone out of my head Granaccio he'd have been long gone that's another that's another top discussion getting sacked in the morning yeah I love that well go on then it's usually around the November time isn't it give us two managers just tell me two names you think at first to go it's normally it's normally November won't be all's manager I don't know but managers are never usually they're obviously sacked but the wording is a mutual agreement and he paid the contract up.
48:57Nicky:So you don't ever go, you sack, see you tomorrow, you're not coming back in. And I'm sure some players would have had a discussion around getting the contract settled and moving on. I think, obviously, the big one was when Roy left, wasn't it? He wasn't sacked, so it was more of a mutual agreement to go, wasn't it? And paid up. That was like a little bit of a sack in his pocket. But it's like, I think most, all managers get the word sack put to him, but it's a discussion base and they get paid up to move. I'm not losing any sleep over managers being sacked. I think the Fulham might be the one under pressure do you know what although do you know what I think I've seen Fulham I quite like watching him play you know what I like about that Fulham manager just the look of him he's the old suit jacket his beard and his hair his beard I think there's a little bit of just for men in there just a bit it's like a fucking raven's wing how black is that raven's wing I don't think I don't think I don't think there needs to be a new word for the blackness of that beard.
49:55I don't think black does it justice. It's gone beyond black. Double black. Yeah, it's... While we're talking about it, which managers use a bit of Just For Men? Him? Abloa. Arteta. Arteta. Yeah, I think Arteta does. I know who does. He's not a manager. Figo. No, he's got R-grain now. Figo. he's the face of just for men
50:23Nicky:what are you on about he does their adverts not a manager though is he I just said that I just said he's not a manager you said Premier League manager he's a Premier League Figo fucking hell who else who else I've seen a few Maresca
50:40he uses Nicky just for skin just for skin just for skin so do you know I've seen Iriola yeah I feel as though the Spanish ones here if the people at Just For Men are watching this right I know I've not got much going on here but I feel as though I should run a course for these lads using Just For Men because they're going wrong with it you see some of them like going you're leaving it on to long lads on and off when you've got her just enough some of them well how does it work is it washing to you or something I don't know yeah you put it on don't you I used to use a bit of Just For Men in me days of her That's why I was asking you.
51:21Yeah. You put it on like a... Was it dust? What is it? No, it's liquid. It's liquid, isn't it? Yeah, you put it on, but you time it on your phone. It says on the box five minutes. I used to do three and a half minutes. That's enough. Enough. I'll tell you what. Where's this podcast? No one ever said he dyes his hair. Where's this podcast going? Where's this podcast? Some people might use Just for Men and need a bit of guidance and go, can't get it right. and put a bit of lotion on your ears and your head. I've seen my mate all turn up on holiday. It's stained. When we're driving back, we need a discussion maybe.
51:58Nicky:Just for no better. This was a really good, serious football podcast discussion before our friend turns up. And now we're on out fucking Just For Men. Before this,

55:46Arsenal Tottenham's a big one, yeah. Would you put Birmingham Villa in, though?
55:50Nicky:Yeah. Yeah? Is it not going to be Premier League or no? Is it just... Yeah. Let me just check. No, it says five versus rivals in English football. Oh, English. Do you know what? It depends where you're from. I'm away from Manchester. We're going to say them games. If you're from Birmingham, you're going to say Arsenal Villa. If you're from London, you're going to say Arsenal Tottenham. So you've gone Liverpool United. United, you've gone Arsenal, Spurs. Man United, Man City, second for me. United, City, oh, second, okay. Would you agree with that, United City? No, from our point of view, like, scores of Manchester, yeah, but I think you're looking at all of English football.
56:27Nicky:I think you've got to put in West Ham, Millwall, Chelsea, them kind of teams. Do you know a strange one, which you think of it, it is a rivalry. Tardis, Swansea, big, oh, it's not English, but massive. I think I don't know I think Alden Rochdale No I'm going to say Liverpool Everton Yeah Yeah It feels quite friendly to me That's what I mean It's gone a bit more friendly that now hasn't it When I was a kid and when we were kids I'm pretty sure you used to see Liverpool and Everton sat next to each other and stuff Really? Newcastle Sunderland is a big one Oh how could we forget that one Big one yeah Do you think Newcastle Sunderland is bigger than Newcastle-Middlesborough.
57:09It's all big for their own people, isn't it? Yeah, that's true. But it is bigger. It is bigger. Yeah. Bolton-Blackburn. Is that a derby? Bolton-Creston? Yeah, I'd say Bolton-Wigan. Bolton-Wigan, right. But you're right, yeah. Like the pie-eating derby. Isn't it funny how, well, United-Liverpools are, but that close proximity thing breathes so much hatred. Oldham Rockdale was on Saturday. Chelsea-West Ham must be a big one. Do you know what it's called, the Derby? The Olden Rochdale? What, the clogs and flat caps fucking special? What is it? Closer, flat caps. El Flat Capio. El Flat Capio. I thought it'd be something like that.
57:53El Black Pudino. So I'd go Chelsea West Ham.
57:57Nicky:There's got to be one. Chelsea West Ham? Sorry, Chelsea... What did they say? Millwall? Chelsea Millwall. Chelsea Millwall? No. I'm telling you. It's Millwall West Ham. That's what I was saying. That's what I said the first time round. Two Twixies in the bottom of a trifle. I'd go Newcastle-Sunderland, Man United's up there with the top one Liverpool, Man United, then Villa, Birmingham. Give me another one. Tottenham Arsenal. Tottenham Arsenal. There you go. There you go. That's our five. Bit of a sweat on, didn't we? Hey, if you want to, firstly, if you, If you know of a really fierce local Davy...
58:41Plemeth Exeter is a big one. ...that we've not mentioned, put it in the comments. And we should do a world football one next time. Oh, classic. Yeah, that's some good ones there, isn't there? 59:26Hot takes, are they hot takes? Hot takes? Wow, this guy. I read the script. Nerd. This is from James. if you put the class of 92 into United's squad now they'd win the league by over 10 points win the league but not about 10 points
59:46Nicky:on the last day oh drama yeah probably would win the league are you thinking put Ryan's right on the left Beck's on the right Bruno would still play he'd carry it right back Philip left back yeah it'd be alright right I'm not sure you know what we do center halves goalkeeper I'm not sure oh that changed center halves can you are you gonna play center half yeah I'd give it a go sitting in front of the back four yeah you gotta go you know going you and Bruno go and play no I'm not sure we would so I wouldn't have a center forward there you go James one's one thinks they will one thinks they won't i'm tongue-in-cheek with that i think it honestly what it would do it massively boosted the squad and i think that's what it is you don't a team doesn't go and win the league nowadays it has to be a squad massive parts of teams as in our team center forwards we had four brilliant center forwards we wouldn't have kenya and emblema and sesco yeah they wouldn't but the level of our forwards right next question this is from connor oh deck connor's saying Declan Rice has the worst haircut in the league we've just been talking about her I don't think he's got a bad haircut Declan Rice I think where he's going wrong and Dex if you're watching Dex we like that me and him this is take it from a lad who used to have a bit of her back in the day grow your sideburns back some it's the it's the it's the shaved sideburns to the I don't know what he's thinking who's told him that Luke God I've never really noticed I noticed his hair now.
1:01:28Oh, I noticed them sideburns. I think his hair's quite nice, isn't it? Lovely hair, that's my point. It's quite long. Sort of long. I'd say Tom Cruise-esque. Tom Cruise-esque. He looks a bit like Tom Cruise, guys, don't he? I think it's a bit of a fashion now. I think it's a bit of a fashion.
1:01:40Nicky:This podcast is quickly turned into Vidal Sassoon. I think it's a bit of a fashion, though, that now, isn't it? My son has his hair like that as well, like Declan Rice. Yeah, he's out there and it's shaved higher. My lad does as well. No, I get the fade. Martinez does it as well. No, I get the fear, but Declan Rice has gone the opposite way. He's gone full, exactly normal hairstyle, then gone wallop. Get them sideburns off. I've not noticed. Right down to skin. Might have been an accident. I've noticed him volleying people, but I haven't noticed him. His hair. That's a bit of a thingy moment. Nice hair.
1:02:10Yeah. Right. Billy. Keith Andrews should replace Michael Curric in the international break. Oh, Billy. ridiculous or just for the international break then go back
1:02:25Nicky:no absolutely no no one's getting a tune there at the minute it's ridiculous I mean he's done a great job at what he's doing he's done amazing Brentford like amazing job but I think Scully has done it before it's a different animal altogether there's different pressures there's different pressures I imagine if Michael was at Brentford he'd be doing great as well I think I agree with that hey I don't know what Keith what Keith Andrew's doing it's brilliant absolutely brilliant with that team he's done amazing very similar to what Brighton are doing well that's it for today's The Good, The Bad and The Football Powered by Midnight the betting app that's built different you can catch us every single Monday around about 6 o 'clock we go live fill your votes
