In short

Manchester United’s decision to sack Ruben Amorim and what it reveals about the club’s structure, recruitment, and “not the Man United way” football philosophy. The hosts debate whether the sacking was knee-jerk vs calculated, how much blame sits with Amorim vs the board, and who might be next (with Darren Fletcher discussed as a likely internal option and Jason Wilcox frequently mentioned as a key figure).

Guest backgrounds

Two ex-football insiders/fans (names not given in transcript) who speak as long-time supporters and reference ex-players (Scholes, Neville, etc.). They also discuss football operations in terms of sporting directors, recruitment, and coaching hierarchies.

Key claims

Amorim’s back-five/back-three approach doesn’t fit United’s history; recruitment and coaching are misaligned (head coach wants a system, recruitment targets players for a different one). The board allegedly moved on because the “bigger picture” and internal conflict were already present. Jason Wilcox’s City connections may be a problem, and the club’s recruitment has repeatedly failed to address central midfield needs.

Notable examples

Newcastle game (back four praised), Wolves match (back five), rumors about Amorim wanting Ollie Watkins vs Benjamin Sesko arriving, and comparisons to Chelsea/Liverpool managerial transitions.

1:10Paddy McGuinness:Bold kick of cherry. Hey, yo, Mr. Pibb. When you go into a Bayern Munich, a Barcelona, a Real Madrid, a Liverpool, a Man United, you can't do that. And that's what's happened. And that's a big flaw of what's going on at Man United. Did we not just feel like it's too much of a coincidence this time in Red Maresca? I like him as a coach with a background. I'd give my season tickets back. Outside, I'd just go and get Keeney. Hello, happy new year and welcome to the good, the bad and the football. The show we had planned today was all set in stone and then this morning, bang, Ruben Amarin sacked. So we've thrown out everything we were going to do today and this show is just dedicated to talking about United.

1:57much to these two's delight. The full show. Is it the full show? It's got to be, innit? I mean... Oh, God. It's massive news, innit? It's massive news. Now, I know this is a stupid question, but right decision? I think he talked himself into it. I think it's been coming in the last couple of weeks, especially. And once you start questioning the people, you know what you're doing as a manager, don't you? Yeah. I just don't think he's... What's the word? I don't think he was in a great position to do it

2:27Paddy McGuinness:unless he wanted to do it. It's calculated, wasn't it? It's very calculated. He's had that in his head. I think from outside of looking in, like Scaldi said, if you want to get sacked, you say that. And he said it a while ago, if you remember, about the glaziers. He said, I'm not sure how honest the glaziers are. And I'm thinking, if you're saying that about your bosses, one in one thing's going to happen, especially when it starts to go bad, which has been going bad. We've just seen it with Maresca as well. It's actually the same. He's out of the football club. and I think it was it was going to happen sooner or later let's be honest and it's not all down to the manager let's put it out there the players haven't been good enough as well but you wake up this morning you drive in and he's sat and you go wow so for me it's like I think it is a knee-jerk reaction to the interview or it is not the interview the last question he got given on the after the which was a bit of a just a throw away wasn't it so that's what made me think he's had it in his head and he's thinking I'm going to get this out I think he's been told that they played really well in the back four against Newcastle.

3:24Paddy McGuinness:They went back to a back five in the next game, can't remember who it was. And I think the powers that have been, Wolves, yeah, and I think the powers that have been have gone, look, you're not helping yourself here because you've got this fan behind you, fans are behind you when you play a back four. Ex-players are talking about back four, back four, not back five and you're killing yourself. And I think his bravado and the fact that he said, I want to be a manager of this football club, not just a coach. I see a coach as in doing what you've been told to do. He wants to be a manager like an old-fashioned manager.

3:52Paddy McGuinness:He wants to pick the players, he wants to pick the way he plays and rightly so it's very rare them days they don't really see managers anymore they are and he is classed as a head coach but that's what his title is in his title but for me as well I think and I'm all against back five by the way we've spoke about this many a times but as a manager let's speak let's be in armouring shoes for a minute if you're going to get sacked and get all that crap that comes with it and all the press and all the slagging off you get then you've got to die on your sword and I think that as a manager as a human being and you've got to sit back now having a coffee in his house going, I did it my way.

4:25Paddy McGuinness:So I don't blame him for doing it the way he did it, but I don't blame the board for getting rid of him now. Sorry, he has had a massive fallout with him. I think we made it quite clear or I did that. I didn't think he was the right man for a job. I don't know, was it four, five, six weeks ago? I thought that for quite some time, but he has had a major fallout because when you look at United, probably United, I put Liverpool in that as well. they don't like sacking managers it's very difficult to get sacked they keep people for longer than they should and with the fans the fans are unbelievable with managers and players they give them as much support as they can I put Liverpool in that category as well so whatever's gone on is massive I think we're seeing the tip of the iceberg aren't we what's happened on the last 48 hours after the game the interview what's happened this morning but there's obviously a bigger part of it underlying what we can't see and we're never going to see we're never going to be privy to it But the summer, you don't just sack a manager that you brought in and backed when it's been going bad.

5:24Paddy McGuinness:Give him all that money four, five, six months ago to go and spend in the summer and then go, you know what, he's gone. There's a bigger picture underneath what we can't see. I mean, everyone loves a conspiracy theory. And one of the things when he did the before, obviously it's only just happened, this breaking news of him being sacked. But I kind of thought, and as mad as football is at the minute and how it's run, I thought Maresca's gone out of Chelsea he's come out and said that Ruben Amarin at the end of that interview about being the manager and not the coach and everything else he's said has he got wind of something behind the scenes where he's heard Maresca's in the mix which is bonkers but it's United so anything goes there and he's thought I've got a sniff there's a bit of blood in the water here I'm just going to come out and say it.

6:16Because when he said about 18 months, then he'll come in, you're almost talking about like he knows about someone coming in. He's heard about it. It weren't like the next geezer, whoever it might be, he's going to come in. He went, when this next bloke comes in. You might be right. It might have spooked him a little bit, Maresco going, because of the relationship he has with, obviously, the ex-City people and Jason Wilcox and Omar Barada. now you hear rumours in football all the time it's the Man United job people are always going to be linked with that when you're not doing too well and look it's no big surprise Maresca being the right man for me I don't see it it's that City style I just don't see it that can't happen

7:00Paddy McGuinness:for the longevity of the people that are at the top of the football club because if they get another City guy in and it goes bad they're done I actually think Maresca is a really good manager I do and a coach I think he's good but it can't happen. I don't see how that can happen. But you're talking a little bit of common sense there and sometimes it seems to me as an outsider looking at United, common sense goes out the window with all the decisions they make. It's like, if I, at the end of this podcast, if we've got a bleep on the phone, breaking news, Allardyce in, I'd be like, yeah. I've just seen him.

7:34I've just seen him next door. He's had a bacon butty outside. Any name linked with United you might not expect doesn't surprise me. No. I think someone would probably surprise me a little bit. He's not been in it for a couple of years, has he? Yeah, look, I don't know. Right from the start, he just didn't feel like the right man, surely. And when they're appointing the new man now, they have to think, right, who plays in the style of Manchester United? now I don't think they've took that into consideration when they've watched Sporting Lesbun and he's so focused on his way of playing and he carried on yeah it worked for him out of course but he was clearly not working here Paddy he was clearly never going to work for Man Utd and whether behind the scenes Jason's trying to get him to change it and he's just refusing to I don't know but also that comes in recruitment side of it as well because he has to try and recruit Jason's trying to recruit for people in his system now they've probably been doing that for the year he's been in and they think, right, can we carry on doing this because it's clearly not working.

8:40We're coming into January, can we waste another 200 million on players who don't fit

8:44Paddy McGuinness:the way the Manchester United play? As well, when you look at that, so I honestly think the next minors should have a connection with the club. I think Michael Carrick could do a lot worse than Michael Carrick coming to that football club. I know people will laugh at that and go, well, he's not highest level, but he knows the football club inside out. He's very, very calm. He's a Man United legend. He's worked at a high level at Middlesbrough and I think, looking at the odds of the next manager, Michael's on the list quite low down, but I think they could do a lot worse than that. And I also do think that who's answerable now?

9:15Paddy McGuinness:Because going back to Ten Hag, that was wrong. They gave him a new contract and sack him within five or six months. That's wrong. That's where I was saying that Manchester hadn't gone to the managers for almost two years. It's very difficult to get sacks or what's happened. Yeah. And then obviously... I'd say Jose would say the same, Llewellyn Gars. they stayed a bit long and they should do and 10-hours are great exactly so it's difficult to sack so whatever's gone on but then they go and employ Amarin who plays a five at the back and you said it many a times ago on this podcast and on other places that Man United don't play about a five so I don't and I'm not here slagging people off because it's easy look it's easy sitting here going he's rubbish he ain't got a clue he's not know what he's doing sack Amarin we don't know the underlying belly of it all we just speak about what we see to bring Amoran in with the way he plays is wrong like I agree with Scolese but looking back on the bit about Tanai they give him a new contract and he gets sat in City they can't keep happening so the next one that comes in and we keep saying it time and time and time and time again in my opinion as a Man United person they have to bring somebody in who will embrace the history of Man United not just go I'm in charge I'm the boss I'm going to do it my way it doesn't work sorry Paul that's a great point embrace the history in the way you hear so many things these days about managers coaches having their own philosophy Manchester United is a philosophy you have to have the manager to come to play that way and he was never that way was he you know what made me most frustrating about him now look the last few weeks he's had seven or eight players missing you've got to give him a bit of leeway for that he did seem a very defensive minded coach but when they attacked they actually could do it they were actually alright and especially with the new players they brought in this could be an attacking team but he constantly went back to his back threes two sitting in front it just became not Man United Do you know me as well we could probably sit here getting slagged off by saying this but I don't care I've been Man United fans for as long as I can remember and Scholes is the same and obviously you be the same with Bolton Man United for me is an institution not just a football club same as Liverpool who's our arch rivals but you've got to admit they're an institution Bayern Munich Real Madrid Barcelona you could say Arsenal to a point but the institutions these football clubs I can only describe what's happened to Man Utd over the last 10 years be like me and Scolese going coaching at Liverpool and trying to say this is wrong that's wrong do it this way you can't you can't do that at a football club that has got so much history and got so much philosophy and is an institution you can't do it you can go into Coventry or you can go to Leicester and we can go we'll do it our way because we know the best way of doing it when you go into a Bayern Munich a Barcelona a Real Madrid a Liverpool a Man United the history of the club you can't do that and that's what's happened and that's a big flaw of what's going on at Man United and it doesn't I don't I take any happiness in saying that in public it kills me to come on here on a Monday morning and talk badly about Man United they played against Leeds yesterday I would have loved to come here today and gone wow we beat them 4-0 Ruben's doing so well we're now fourth in the league we're looking really positive we've got some new signings coming in January we look good but we can't so you can't sit here and go that's great when it's actually shit which it has been it's been absolutely so bad you actually talk about Leeds yesterday yeah and after the game I thought oh did I write that it's not a bad point because your expectations have become I was going to say that which is mad when you think about that I spoke after it yesterday you go good result it's not a good result they're playing a team who got promoted last year they're not a great team but what they are they give it their all the crowd gets behind them and it's hostile you know you've come to me condition like that it's the other day which is random I was in a shop and the person serving me went thanks very much did it and was really helpful and I left that shop going this person he's like the best this is me he's so nice no that's how it should be because your expectations because your expectations have dropped now you expect a knob to serve you now coming in off after the word knob isn't the right thing to say about this geezer, but the name I'm hearing about, and you two know this bloke better than most, the foul guy seems to be at the minute, Ruben Amarin's gone, but I hear Jason Wilcox's name a lot, right?

13:44Now, this only just happened, so it's only been like a couple of hours, but I'm hearing his name put in the mix a hell of a lot, saying he doesn't know what he's doing there, right? Now, I don't know. I have no idea what are your two's opinion on that because it can't just be Ruben Amren coming in from sporting as the manager and it's gone tits up which pretty much right from the get go really there's never I don't even think there's been a purple patch where he's been a manager he's turned the corner his record's been awful yeah so Jason Wilcox were touted about as he's the he's the person who brought him in he's the person who fought for him again that's only like what I've heard so what's your two's opinions on was it Dan Ashworth I think it probably was it was Jason wasn't it I think Dan Ashworth was more of like a Gareth Southgate type of man look Jason's lucky I said it before I see my city people sometimes it's hard to get you that out of your head even when Jose Mourinho came I just saw him as a Chelsea I could see him running down the touchline I think what's he doing there yeah now look Jason's obviously very good at his job I think he's with development probably squad at Manchester City which is still a big job and then he went to Southampton he's come in Jim has put his trust in him now it's how many times how many chances you get to get the right man now look I think he's already made a couple of mistakes Ten Hag with a new contract went on too long this one has obviously been a disaster really it's how many chances you give him what do you get I don't know as a sporting director do you get three four five chances I don't know

15:19Paddy McGuinness:I think the Jason one the Man City connection kills him let's be honest he's going to have to take that on the chin that's going to happen but he's got the main job big job he's obviously got the big wage he obviously runs that football club on the football side so you've got to take a bit of crap it's part and parcel of what it comes with he's been in football a long time he knows he's not going to get a smooth ride only because of the football club that he's at and the football club that he was at so he's going to get people saying things this is not right and it'll be all over the show now he doesn't know what he's doing he's a Man City player but for me with Jason I do think I honestly do believe he's killed himself a little bit because he's employed a hell of a lot of people that are from outside that bubble and again it's brilliant going and bringing expertise in out of your bubble we did it with Kieran McKenna Kieran McKenna was unbelievable when he came in coming from Tottenham he bought into the Man United system but he brought in little bit little snippets little diamonds you were playing him didn't you?

16:17Paddy McGuinness:no I didn't actually I was part of it but I didn't not personally I was part of the team that I employed but I do think that bringing people expertise in from outside you've almost helped but when you're flipping it and you're bringing so many people from outside and not enough people in it changes it and if you look at the people he's brought in over the last certainly over the last 18 months let's say I've all been Man City Man City Academy Manager ex-Man City Academy Manager he brought in another Alan Wright's come in as assistant of reserves. On the right, he's played for Blackburn? Yeah, Blackburn.

16:52Paddy McGuinness:Honestly, honestly. That's his mate from Blackburn. Yeah, but these are all obviously very good at the job and it's not me sitting there and going, you've got to be man, but you have to have some sort of feeling for the football club. There's only one person at our football club, Darren Fletcher. And he's obviously taking over the football club now, which is great, but he's going to need help. He's going to need help at the top to go on and I hope he does really well. I hope he gets the results and I hope he does really well, but he's going to need help. Do you know one big who do you go to? I was doing a TV game last year I can't remember it was one of the Europa League games and the person I was with on the TV actually bumped into Jason Wilcox and said I don't think we're far away you know I think we could be three or four players away from being a really top team now that stuck in my head and I thought fucking I don't feel like that to me not to anyone three or four seasons I think he meant but that's because you know the football club you know what it takes to be at that level and again it isn't just Man United it's an institutional football because Liverpool who we have a heart's right Liverpool but they are an unbelievable football club but he'd be like Liverpool hierarchy going let's get all the Everton hierarchy in because it seems to be working do you know what I mean it's like it's as bonkers as that look at the prime example of Liverpool appointing Arnie Slott after Jurgen Klopp did pretty much the same thing and won the league we've tried to rip absolutely everything up forgot about traditions and the history of the club and gone a totally different way.

18:22But this happened also before they come in

18:24Paddy McGuinness:so they can't take all the blame. You know, Jason and Barada can't take all the blame because this happened before they come in so there were other people in charge they ripped it up as well. But, if I, Chelsea example, if someone said to me tomorrow go and take charge of Chelsea either as a sporting director I'll remind you who am I going to take with me? The people I trust. Of course. The people that I've grown up with and the people I've got my back. So that's fine bringing people in but when it goes bad you've got to take the shit on your chin you've got to take it on the chin and they've got to be big shoulders and go you know what, get a little hug together we're getting slagged off by Butts, Scoles, Neville, Keith all these ex-players, but you know what we're in here and we're going to put ourselves together and no one's going to touch us so if I went to Chelsea, I'd take Scoles with me I'd take all the lads that grew up with me and go, you know what, we're going to go and do it this way but when it goes bad, you can't then cry and go oh they're having a go at us and that's what I've been here over the last probably the last six, seven month ex-players saying this ex-players saying that do you know why we're saying it?

19:19Paddy McGuinness:because it's terrible what we're seeing and we love the football club I've been a Man United fan since it was six seven months I can remember so I'm not saying it to go oh I stab everybody in the back but I'm saying it because it is generally crap and if it would be you'd be praising yeah of course we would we'd love it to be good I'd love to I'd love to get my son to a European Cup final and watch him win the European Cup I'd love nothing more than that because he's never seen him win anything we'd love them to be like City the last few years battering everyone playing brilliant football but we say it because we believe it and we don't say it because and we get slagged off as well we're kind of slagging United we're not slagging them off we're just you have to catchphrase say what you see how can we sit on here and go it's brilliant oh it's great oh that's great it's not great it's crap and again hopefully in 18 months time we're going I'm watching a FA Cup final a Champions League final and we're either winning the title or we're very close to it.

20:15Do you know who's got a big choice, big decision now is Jim. Yeah. Jim Ratcliffe. Because he must be thinking, have I got the right person employing the next person who's got to be right in Jason? He's probably thinking, have I got the right club? Have I done the right to see him? I'm sure they're making a few quid. The thing that is,

20:34Paddy McGuinness:so if you look at Berrard, he goes under the radar a little bit, but what he does is different to what Jason does. He has nothing to do with football. Berrard has nothing to do with football. He's the business side. He's the CEO, how the football club runs, how the HR runs, how everything runs in a football club, but football passes on to Jason. And unfortunately, it's not doing great at the minute, so he takes the burden. And if you sat with Jason in a pub with a pint of Guinness, he'd say, this is my job, I've got to take it on a chin. Because if it goes well in 18 months, he'll be taking all applaudits.

21:04Paddy McGuinness:He'll be taking all applaudits. And rightly so. And rightly so, because if you take that job, it's a big job. and especially at this time of the history of the football club over the last 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 years it's a tough job so you've got to take the rough with this move Is there a trend now with modern managers doing this post-match interview and almost signing their own resignation letter because it's not a one-off thing this and it's like you see it's happening more and more often It's funny though how they don't resign Yeah There's that in it Of course it is the experts are brilliant at it the thing with Amarim he didn't really have that money in the bank to go criticising he's got no credit in the bank do you know what I mean people like Jose Van Gaal all these people they have they're not really bothered but he's still a young coach who just didn't have that background to go and do what he did so it's understandable why he got sacked and look it's a way if you're not enjoying your job and it's not going in your relationships, it's easy to get yourself sacked.

22:12And I've said this the last few weeks, with the subs he made, especially, he's bringing centre-halves on, centre-halves off. Fucking hell, come on, are you trying to get sacked? Can I ask something?

22:21Paddy McGuinness:Do you know, obviously, the talk about around it over the last, you know, how long is Pep going to last? Is he going to be there for another year? Is he going to leave it? That sort of, and obviously, Berada was in City 18 months ago, was it? Sort of around that time now. Do you think they've been looking at Amarin as a replacement for Pep in his City days when he was at City and because when someone not historical like Sir Alex was going to leave or Pep's going to leave or Klopp's going to leave people start looking for these people way in advance of when they are going to leave back of my mind I'm looking at it going were they looking at him two years ago Amarin they would have been every chance and then when they've come to United they've gone we really like this guy I'm going to bring him into this football club did he not have some weird connection with West Ham Amarin he flew over to West Ham speak to him didn't I do you remember yeah how long ago with that though a couple of years ago maybe let's not take it away from what he's done Amren not United but he's a very good coach and what he does but it's what he does and how he plays and it's not the Man United way if they were thinking of him for Man City he wouldn't suit them either no I don't think they would but do you know what he is you don't suit Palace what it's Crystal Palace get him in there I was just going to say that it's like a Crystal Palace a lot of West Ham but people you know if you're in that role that high up you've got a good brain and you look at people, I'm not talking about Berada here, you look at people and you say, I really like him, I like the way he does stuff.

23:41Paddy McGuinness:You don't resolve when you move to the club, forget about them people. They're still in your head from the previous year or 18 months. I might be way off the mark here. But I just don't get how he came to Man United in the first place. Did you know he was rubbing their hands this morning? I'm glad that's fucked up. Dan Ashworth. Yeah. He never wanted him, did he? No, he didn't. I think that's quite clear. It's almost when I'm like, you wouldn't say it, Were you like, I did say originally that. Well, I don't think he was right. I don't think he was the right man. Look at you now. You can't have to bring in and go to Southgate though now.

24:12Oh, no, no, no, no, no. I wouldn't have done then. Yeah. I'd have to be honest with you. Yeah. They say you should learn something new every day. Like how you should only drink Jägermeister at zero degrees Fahrenheit. Ice cold. Like those frozen cavemen they find. Which makes you wonder, what would a caveman think of Jägermeister? Well, if you served it warm, he'd probably throw it in your face, say, and storm off. And nobody wants that. So drink it cold or not at all. Jägermeister. Damn, that's cold. Drink responsibly. Jägermeister liqueur, 35 % alcohol by volume.

25:14Terms apply. Start your day with Quaker Protein Instant Oatmeal. The instant oatmeal ready to help you tackle whatever your day brings, like wrinkling your toddler into their car seat. That was fun. coaching your sixth grader's soccer team little girls and carrying all the groceries in one trip try Quaker protein instant oatmeal, granola and bars great taste and a good source of protein Quaker, bring out the good it's um do you know who I think the biggest winner is in all this? Ruben Amarin he's going to leave with God knows how many millions of pounds and he'll probably go get another job, maybe in Portugal or wherever, somewhere in Europe.

26:00He'll get a big job. And he'll probably do well. He's probably made more money this morning than he has done right throughout his career. Exactly. But I think the experience of being in the spotlight, because he's no bigger club than United, and whoever takes over at United has got to be able to handle that. He's got a lot of pressure on the shoulder. He hasn't handled it, though, has he? No, but what I'm saying is, he's a young man, and he'll go on, and it'll be probably in 10, 20 years he'll talk about learning things and doing things differently and mistakes he's made from that time at United.

26:35You know what I mean? He should do. He should use that experience. But you know

26:39Paddy McGuinness:when Sir Alex left and David Myers come in who I thought was treated unfairly to be fair he's just dead a lot longer than he did. Even David Myers who's worked in the Premier League for so many years didn't understand how big a football club Man United was and I know that for a fact because I was working and I spoke to him after that you bring in van Gaal and Mourinho to the biggest names a bit you know what they did I'm with the whether you like that people like them or not they won but they kept people around them in the football club they kept Ryan they kept Michael Carrick they kept certain other people in and that they left and other people come in and just go like that they go if you look at that if you look at Amarin's backroom stuff yeah it wasn't right was it it's it's like terrible yeah you're looking at the bench and you're going I have no idea who any of these people are and as a player you're going to go I'm not listening to him and I do think and I think that the news this morning is that obviously Darren is second over doesn't say how long it's going to be but whoever comes in next as the main measure keep Darren with him keep Darren with you at the top end don't have him as an under 18's coach that's what you want to be bring him in as number two or go and get someone my character whoever it is who knows that club because when the shit is the fan you need people to go whisper on your ear and go you know what you're messing up a little bit here don't say that because these fans like this these fans like that and when it goes bad you need them fans on your side as a player or as a manager or as a coach and I feel that over the last probably the last six years now they've just moved everybody outside and gone we don't care what anyone thinks it's a really good point about Darren Fletcher especially because he was with Hammering for a small time but you know he ended up putting cones out but what Fletcher do he protect him in some in some ways because of the experience and he knows what it's about make a feeling make me make feeling even if he like he said some stupid stuff in press conferences look so if someone there but you can't say that course he said something about the young player member about him being on loan these little players are on loan and they're not even playing well they're not doing anything they're not only going they're 18 year old kids now you don't say that about your own kids you just don't say so you should be going well pull back on that or press officer, pull that question.

28:51Paddy McGuinness:Don't have that going out. Don't do this. Yeah, exactly. Didn't he actually say this is the worst Man United team there's ever been? Which to me is like, now whether in his head, again, thinking this will get him at it. Even if you believe it, Paddy. You don't say that. What are them kids, them lads in a dressing room thinking? Do you not remember when Paul Mercer were on here? He was saying about, at Walshaw, he was saying about, he had an older geezer with him who came in who'd give him that advice like that and just said, Luke, maybe look at this a bit different or maybe not say that. And he said it were invaluable.

29:23And forgive me, I forget who it was. But it is that. And it seems like Amarin didn't have that around him.

29:31Paddy McGuinness:The manager said something yesterday about Ugarte is doing well. Ugarte is not a Man United midfielder in a million years. In a million years, he's not a Man United midfielder. So recruitment-wise, there's just one example of getting it wrong all the time. And we keep getting it wrong with recruitment all the time who are the players that are bringing in and it's just fact I think it's quite obvious where the conflict is yeah it's recruit a new coach yeah the head coach manager or whatever he is I'm not in he wants to recruit for his system and Jason Wilcox and Berrara have probably seen it for so long thinking this system is not going to work everyone is saying it it's not going to work as Nicky said before they went back to the back four for Newcastle won the game alright they weren't brilliant but they got it done do you know what I mean so there's a big conflict there and there Jason Wilcox and Omar and Baraday are probably thinking we can't recruit for that system we've got to recruit for the way Manchester United should be playing and they put the foot down and he's not been able to accept that so if we're sat around a table and this would have happened I can guarantee you in even Sir Alex's heydays it would have happened they'd have sat around a table and scores you if you would have been there as a recruitment guy and if I'd have been a recruitment guy and you've got Sir Alex and he's you'd have discussions and you'd all disagree you'd all go no I don't agree don't agree with that don't agree with that but when you get off from that table and you walk out that door that decision that's been made whether it's about to sign Dwight York or whoever it's going to be you all go through that door on the same page now the way it's set up now is that the manager will go I don't want that play he's not for me and the recruitment will go well we've been watching for three years and he's been the best player in Europe for the last three seasons and there's his stats to back it up so they're not on the same page so straight away you've got a break straight away you've got a break and when you talk about recruitment that is the most important thing in a football club if that's not right and your sporting directors is not getting on with your first team because they're playing a different system how do you expect it to be right where does the lack of communication is do you come into a football club as a head coach that's what he comes into so if you come in as a head coach that says to me you don't buy the players you don't sign the players but somehow you've got to have some kind of little say you've got to have you say to be fair to Amrin and playing devil's advocate, you know, it reported he wanted Olly Watkins and then obviously Benjamin Seshko was brought in instead.

31:54Now, if that kind of thing goes on, which we'll never be privy to, but that was the rumour, surely then, as a manager, coach, whatever you want to call it, you feel a sense of injustice because obviously he's not doing very well at the minute at United up front. but would Amory not be going a bit like what you were saying about Dan you're going well I told you I wanted Watkins and I'm getting the flack for it yeah but again he's come as head coach

32:31Paddy McGuinness:so why is he saying that his job is to coach why is he saying Amory is a manager he must have been told he was the manager I have no idea because his official title there isn't managers anymore there's no Sir Alex's Unless you're going down to League 1, League 2, there isn't there. And even League 1, League 2, you come in as a head coach. Now look, you've got to have some form of say, of course you have. But as I've said many times now, his frustration has come from the thought, fuck his system, we're not recruiting for that anymore. I don't blame the club doing that, I think it's the right way.

33:07Paddy McGuinness:But you've got to have some connection, which is what Scaldi's getting at, I think. You've got to have a connection. So if we're working together... You'd be in all the meetings. You'd be at all meetings, you'd say, I'm 100 % not having him, and if he's working alongside me or the other way around, you should go, I really like him and the recruitment, but the manager's just not having him at all, so let's just put that to the side. Now, the next one might come along and I might go as a manager to Scoles use recruitment. Yeah, but I think he might be better at heading on him. Then I'll still like him a little bit, then go for him, because what a club can't keep doing or any club can't keep doing, he's spending 200, 300, 400, 500 million, and then go and get a new manager coming in and me and my manager go, I don't like him, him, him, him, him, and you've got to get rid of him you've got to pay the contracts up so it costs you 300 million to get him out the door five or six players but is that not done before you get the job surely if you're in an interview to take over at United let's say no a name which would be perfect for him but I don't think it'd happen Emery let's say for instance and to be honest if I'm Emery I don't even know if I'd want to go there no no you're right of course he does no no I don't I think he's flying Astor Village Man United look I love Astor Village I understand what you're saying Man United come on do you know what the thing with it is Paddy you know what it's like no but because of the players sorry Nicky it's that thing where you were just saying about he'll look at that squad and he'll probably think I can't do much much more with them anyhow I think he can I think he can if you play properly I was looking at the game yesterday I was looking at the game there's seven or eight players I was looking at yesterday and thinking man to man we should be beating Leeds no matter how crap we've been this year no matter how the tactics if you go one on one and you look at all at Man United is 11 players they should be winning 7-8 of their battles which means you 9 times out of 10 win the game but going back to what you said then you know it's like in any walk of life in your walk of life when you go into a job you get promised the world don't you it's a bit like in here isn't it we get promised heating and cups of tea and freezing a couple of penguins and freezing a polar bear not my biscuits we dream of that you get promised all the things and I'm pretty sure you would have got you didn't have wanted him and they'd have gone yeah you've got to be the manager your title's coach but you're going to be part of this you can be part of that you can be part of that and then he gets a good start going bad you get more more push to one side but he must you know sorry one big thing they didn't address in the summer well Nicky will probably agree there was all talk about a goalkeeper centre-hours wing-backs wingers forwards the biggest problem was central midfield always now that's a mistake between the recruitment and the manager surely not to bring somebody because we all know we all know Casemiro's been a great player but he's just not he's not the player you can't bring a player if he's not available can you to Man United you can if you're Man United and that's always I touched that a lot ago you know you two say this a lot but it's not it's not United it's not Bolton no but listen it's Man United no no listen I've got to say I understand that obviously one of the biggest why are you putting your chair because it's going to go off you're fucking getting ready don't start on Bolton but you're saying about United no doubt one of the biggest clubs in the world but it's not the United of all I think no a lot of young players know right that generation coming through I'm on about 14, 15, 16, 17 years of age they will not have a clue about the United philosophy and what they've done and what they've won they look at things different now I think it's all which is again why you need someone at the clubs to go and meet them people that's what I'm saying but you're saying well if there's a midfielder and he's not available it's United innit no it's not because I think no a modern player won't go they'll just go yeah it's a shit show yeah but what modern players do now they're very insensitive by money yeah and you know what they'll do they'll think I know this sounds stupid but whether it's right or wrong they'll go well if I sign for Man United I'm going to get an extra 30 million followers on Instagram and I'm telling you now I'm telling you now that buys into some of these young players so you think it's not necessarily a full football decision not a full football decision nowadays no I think the days of when we played are totally gone they will walk on Man United because it is but they'll look at the bigger picture and go following the size of the football club and also you're saying about Man United it's not what it was we all know that but it's still a massive pull it's a huge pull you look at the managers that are trying to put themselves forward over the next few years Zidane will put himself forward or his people will maybe he wants to do it or not Zavi will all these big name managers who have been unbelievable world class players someone will put their name forward to that football just sorry just because it's in my head where you're saying about and it's interesting about it's not always just a pure football decision.

37:40Do you think, I'm going on a bit of a tangent here, that's why Trent Alexander-Arnold went to Real Madrid? Because you can't say, I've gone in there to win things. You're winning things at Liverpool. It's because it's Real Madrid. That's what I mean. It's Real Madrid.

37:53Paddy McGuinness:I was just going to say, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Man United, Liverpool. When we say it's Man United, it isn't Man United of all. You're right there. And they can't probably compete with the absolute elite, the best best best players say Jude Bellingham for instance say he's going from Birmingham to Real Madrid you think yeah I get that rather than go to Manchester United who are the top players if it was an Mbappe on the move you think would you go to no probably not if he was coming to England at this point but just below that level then they can go and blow people out of the water you think the lad at Brighton they keep talking about I haven't seen loads of him and when I'm saying they've got the power to it I mean the financial power say look here's 100 million quid come on come aside for us and you're going to go from Brighton to Man United don't you?

38:39Yeah but do you want a player at a club who's coming for the money?

38:46Paddy McGuinness:No but where we're at now you have to entice them somehow It's the only way to get them to Man United Yeah but that's what I'm saying that's like that's wrong though do you know if you're going to a club like United because they're giving you 400 bags a week you're not the right player for them Because of what's happened in the last five years it's the only way they can get people to the club but it's never going to get any better is it you've got to strip it back of course it will because you get them players in who are elite and it gets better of course and again Paddy if you look at Amarin obviously the big news when he gets to the end of his career when he gets to whatever let's say it's 65-60 when he looks at his CV I am telling you now the top of that the manager the top of his CV won't be Sporting Lisbon whoever it's going to be next it's going to be after that and then Man United it'll be Man United and then the rest and it's the same with players and again people will be bored of me saying it when you play for a football club like that all the other big dogs we talked about the institutions that's the top of everyone's CV and if you ask I speak to Graeme Sinus quite a bit he's a good fellow he's a Liverpool legend Liverpool legend is like one of the best players I've ever had he's managed the club he's like a big personality even he said Man United is one of the biggest football clubs in the world oh yeah it's not that about that it will always have that pull it will always have that pull you have to realise what market United are shopping in yeah but look at look at the transfer we don't have just said they've signed a lab from Wolves brilliant player signed a lab from Brentford who looks like he's going to be very good as well they're not in that market anymore so to get into the market of buying taking a player from Arsenal taking a player from Liverpool taking a player from Man City taking a player from Real Madrid Barcelona there has to be a premium to it but they've just got to be, they've left themselves in that position because of what's happened.

40:39The failings over the last four, five, six, seven years.

40:41Paddy McGuinness:To be able to get back to that market, what Scores is quite rightly saying, you've got to get back there. To get back there, you've got to get the next ones down that will get you there. When you get there, then no disrespect, you're then going to go and get the best players from Chelsea or Arsenal. And then these ones that got you there, they might get moved away because you're going to have to try and win Champions League. To compete for the best players, they've got to pay more money. So, for instance, you had, let's say, Jude Bellingham as well he's not happy at Real Madrid he wants to leave you've got Arsenal and Manchester United after him at this point you'd probably choose Arsenal then all of a sudden United come in and say we'll give you another 250 grand a week that's the position Man United Yeah but that's me as a fan I can't get my head around that because I get it financially Jesus Christ you're going to go yeah it's a no-brainer but I think fans can sniff out players who are there because they want to be there and because they want to win things it's just the way of the world now that's Man United have put themselves in that position I also think that's flawed as well because even not flawed but even when the Sorelics were signing these great players from all over the show from any club they wanted to go they were getting mega money they weren't coming in on crap money they were coming in as high as paid so if you look at a Roy example when he come at the Hyatt British record he weren't getting the because he was a Man United fan he weren't a Man United fan he come because it was the club that was going to win but there were also some players who weren't getting as much as money I saw a quote the manager this week say no look we can't offer you this amount of money but we can offer you this because you're coming to play for Man United but that's gone now that's what I'm saying it's gone it's done within the structure of the football club these ones coming in were always at the high end oh yeah they were always at the high end but they probably could have gone to another club for a extra 10-15 grand a week I only think back to times like when you know Kane were leaving Spurs and you know it was like got to sign him at United and we don't know whether it happened with Donnarumma but it was Kane there was Declan Rice was in that as well and you're going they're not coming so it can't just be it can't just be a business it's got to be the player not fancying it I think it's a bit of both isn't it really I think they've got to use their brains listen they've done the balls in the transfer market when they brought Sanchez from Arsenal giving 350 grand way back when they did it with Zlatan who did very well for the club by the way giving mega money they've done it with Mkhitaryan loads of players and sometimes that doesn't work so it's a fine balance and what happens is people panic and they will do they'll start panicking now the new manager if he comes in or Darren takes over the season whoever takes over that football club at the start of next season will get massive funds again and it's panic but what they've got to do in my opinion in my humble opinion is get people in there that know what it takes to be a Man United footballer it can't just go and buy any old player from around the world they have to go and look at the way they live you've not got a job have you you should do it I'm not saying it for us I'm really not they will get all that crap on Instagram but it'll be like bitter I've got to be honest I don't want you to I'll be fucked here won't I talking to myself welcome talking to two penguins over there right Nick if Arsenal Manchester United wanted you now as a midfield player both offer you 100 grand a week where would you go as a Man United fan no forget a fan we've got Arsenal see that's bonkers isn't it though Yeah but that's the point That's where they are At this point Now look at five years time When they've paid All these premiums Paid more than they should do Then they might be back To that level But at this point There's no way You're choosing Man United No but if Man United And Arsenal Were going together At the Summit At the summit Like trying to win The Premier League Then You would have got Man United Because it's got It's a bigger Football club And they are run Like businesses now Bigger global audience You never No one ever realises it's a true quote this no one ever realises how big Man United is until you go on pre-season tour I am telling you now you never ever David Moyes got the shock of his life and you go this is insane it's a bit like what Niall Horan was saying about when he went on tour with One Direction he said there was thousands of people outside we're not a boy band obviously but people don't understand it they just think Man United they've got a few fans here a few fans there we've got a few what's Keeney's famous one prawn cocktail prawn sandwiches crew here and there I reckon you look but in a boy band with them dreadlocks you know I mean where the fuck is that from 2026 he's got it back in it's the first one back and he's not let it go has he yeah I might go I might go to Turkey and get my tea for my head anyway no bed let's move on okay so this is Hotlet Press for me it's just popped up on my iPad I'm really excited about asking you this actually so So these are a list of managers who are already being bandied about by United.

45:35I'm going to start lowest odds first. If you're not even interested, just go move on. 16-1, Julian Nagelsmann. Move on. Nope. Right. 14-1, Michael Carrick. My pick. Interim.

45:50Paddy McGuinness:My pick. What, that's permanent? I'd put him in and he'll do well. And then a bit like Oli did. But I think, like Scully said, they might be scared of that because then it gets forced upon him because of the... Into him. Yeah. But that'd be the one I would go for. As a non-football person, I've got to say Michael Carrick, whenever I've been in his company and what have you, I think if you're a player, he does have that bit of... He's somewhat about him, isn't he? There's a presence. He's calm, he's got all about him, he's been there, he's done it. And people forget he did a good job at Millsborough.

46:19He'll be well respected. I can't speak to that. Here we go. Another one for you. Kieran McKenna.

46:26Paddy McGuinness:Very good coach. 14-1. not the right job for him now. Robin Van Persie. Nope. Nope. Fucking the list is going down quickly here lads. Cesc Fabregas. Nope. Do you know what, I actually like what he's doing and I thought it might have been a better choice for Chelsea than Rosinha but no, not for you. Marco Silva. Nope. I don't mind him but no. Right. Gareth Southgate. Nope. Move on. Yeah. Gareth should have been in a couple of years ago. He's 10 to 1. I think Gareth's still in his chip just a few years ago. I think Gareth would have been great to settle everything down. Yeah. Xavi. No, not for me.

47:06Not for me, no. I've got to say, the list is getting a little bit fucking slim. He's not got enough experience in England, and he plays a football again. It's not Man United football. Barcelona football, it's not Man United football. This name, and it's four to one, but to me, after everything what's gone on with Amren and what's been said about his tactics, this seems bonkers to me, because he plays the same fucking system. Glasner. Oliver Glasner yeah no not familiar for them reasons you've just said I mean he's done brilliantly where he is but it's not my name no no Fletch Darren Fletcher obviously he's in trim at the minute I'd have him and Michael do it till the end of the season so they can get the right man do you not think though I know again business and everything else it's maybe not very glamorous bringing in two ex-players who whose names aren't synonymous with like top managers at the minute but if it works why not just stick with them well we did that with Oli didn't we disaster after the airport it wasn't a disaster but he did alright Oli but you get sucked into it look Michael would be great as an interim he's not got I don't think he's got the experience to be a Man United manager I just don't who do you think's number one on this list I can see it there oh fucking hell oh lads you've absolutely shafted me

48:21Paddy McGuinness:I wanted to head down and never always get your options open always look over Take a picture, take a picture, look round, see what's around you. Maresca's number one. I mean, if that happens, I pray for Jason if that happens. The timing actually feels like something's been fucking concocted to make that happen. Yeah. I just don't see it again. It's a little bit of the city stuff. There's three people on there. I can't believe I'm not on there. Go on. Emery. Emery's one of them. Yeah. Iriola. Bournemouth. I think he plays an attacking football attacking style of play yes number one for me which I do in the summer is Thomas Tuchel all day long interesting he mentioned him in the press conference did he?

49:06no I don't know he did yeah he said Tuchel he said Mourinho and Conte I think Tuchel's one of the very best out there

49:12Paddy McGuinness:yeah I like him as well and you two have said he's been the number one target and his contract with England is only till the summer that's what I'm saying you two have said that you said that he'll step away from England after the World Cup I'm sure you've said that on previous watch Look I think he can be a bit temperamental and he could be quite difficult to handle but he's done it at big clubs the PSG he's a real deal and he's turned England around as well you won't know how much he's done with England until the World Cup because the opposition is that bad but England do look a lot better under him Out of those three names you've just said what do you think the United fan base would pick out of them three?

49:52I think a lot of them were going towards Emery with what he's done at Villa. Yeah, I don't think Emery will come. I think you mentioned it before.

49:58Paddy McGuinness:I think he's got a good little niche there. He could... But you never know at the end of the season. Man United, dog. He's got to leave Man United. Do you know if you look at Darren second over and you say Michael go in with him, I think they could do a lot worse, me, than bringing a Bruce in with him as well. No, I can hold that. Just sit there and help them out a little bit. Or Roy. I think Roy would have to want to go in full-time, wouldn't he? I don't think he'd do it part time I don't think he'd do either I think Brucie now if you look at Darren as a young coach young head on his shoulders as well going into that job he's going to need someone to lean on and I think they're doing a lot worse than Brucie going in just to the end of the season with Darren A name not on this list but I'm talking just till the end of the season what about Van Nistel Roy?

50:46Paddy McGuinness:Yeah I think with Ruud he's done that once before he did it a few games didn't he before he went to Leicester I think Rude is a very intelligent bright guy and I think he'd want a full contract to go in I don't think look I might be wrong it's Man United he obviously loves a football club he might go in but my thinking would be is I've done that once and you're not using me again even Oli Gunnar again I don't think Oli's doing that until the end of the season is he? I'd see that as again just as an outsider I don't think that'd be a right one just because he's been in a couple of times before it's kind of been a bit hit and miss and it feels like I'll give you my team at the end of the season before they go and get Tuchel will be Darren with either Michael and Brucey and if Michael wouldn't do it then Darren and Bruce end of the season and then go and get Tuchel, that's what I would do I wouldn't be against I wouldn't be surprised to ring Michael to get involved with Darren, I think Darren would want the mates as well I think them to still end the season this season isn't finished you know what I mean they've still got Champions League football and I think that's where I think Bruce just sat there with them two by the way when Giggsie took over it was me Scholesy Giggsie and Phil you need more than one it's a massive job that I don't know who else they're going to bring him but if you brought in Michael Darren and just said Bruce not babysitting but give him a bit of old head Bruce has got unbelievable experience experience unbelievable he's a great blog he knows the club he's got no aspirations of going back into football so he's not going to he's not going to go I'm in charge here it's my club he's going to help he's a helper he'd probably enjoy it more he'd enjoy it he's not getting the pelters and then you've basically got Darren, Michael and him if you brought them three in get in Champions League and then go and get Tuchel that'd be the dream This episode is brought to you by State Farm Listening to this podcast Smart Move Being financially savvy Smart Move Another Smart Move Having State Farm help you create a competitive price when you choose to bundle home and auto.

54:27Paddy McGuinness:will it be his job Aline seriously end of the season we're going back on that I just for his sake I hope he gets the next one right do we not just feel like it's too much of a coincidence this time with Morescu and the relationship he has with Jason Wilcox and Barola if Morescu comes in I like him as a coach I really do with a background I'd give my season tickets back me son wouldn't be going to football I'd stop him going I'd stop him going I'd stop him going can you clip that up lads that's the clickbait for today I'd hand in me season ticket you need to come and get your season ticket that's bull that's bull why even if he wins I think he's done well I thought going to Chelsea I thought no this thing will last two minutes I think he's done alright you misread me I can't sit here and go about Man United philosophy and DNA and then be go well I'd love him Maleski's an ex-man City guy then you've got Barada Jason now I don't care how much success is and you're forgetting when I'm from everyone's City fans I'm a Man United fan I can't I can't accept that I just can't I get it do you know what though Nick my only reservation about Thomas Tuchel I love him I love everything I like the way he behaves I like what he does in the press I like the way he treats his players but his football is very very possession based and a little bit Man City that's my only reservation a lot of coaches like that now they're all like that now it feels like a trend I'd rather see that than what we're seeing now though wouldn't you we're never in control of a game I think he'd make your team in control of games I'd go for him all day long I wouldn't change my mind on that but in the interim well not interim because if Mureska goes in it'll be us for full time do you know one point with Emery everyone's talking about Emery well not everyone is because he's not talking about anything he feels like I know he's a coach but he feels like more of a manager I think he's in total control of us and I don't think Emery's and he's not going to get that yeah I don't think he's the kind of manager who does that press conference going oh it's shit here basically I think he's I think he's a bright I think he's very bright as well What was he like at Arsenal?

56:50I can't remember He didn't do great at Arsenal Was he Prescott I can't remember Good afternoon Do you know just talking about Just parking United up for one second How mad football is at the minute With Maresca I couldn't believe when I first heard about He was being touted for Man City When you've got Pep there And I'm going Oh fucking mad football that's being talked about yeah I think people are speaking about Pepin finishing at some point he'd want to go out on a high though wouldn't he he doesn't want to go out like third or fourth in the league well he's lasted longer at City than any other club I think that's why people are thinking at some point he's going to go now look Moresca does feel like a really good replacement for him at Man City doesn't he he doesn't at United but he does at Man City now look people you don't like Mreskid I don't like him

57:46Paddy McGuinness:I think he's very good at what he does but he doesn't fucking sit right with me he just doesn't sit right with me that's what I'm saying City yeah 100 % yeah if I was a City fan I'd be going to get him in because he knows the philosophy he knows how Pep works there's not too much of a change total opposite to what's happened to Man United there's been so much change it's every two or three years there's so much changes look Pep's not going to last forever is he he's not going to be Sir Alex Bader for 20 or 30 years whatever it is and there's always speculation at some point he is gonna is there only Italy he's not managed yeah I think so so do you think that he'll like want to do a couple of seasons with an Inter Milan or something like that I think national team might be one for him afterwards whether it's maybe even Brazil or something like that I think is this some like conflict between Spain and Catalonia I don't know he won't do Spain he'll do Spain it's Catalonia you can imagine a manager of Brazil a bit like Ancelotti he's gone now do you know what I mean what about two clinic United What about two clinic United and Pep at England?

58:45Yeah. Do you know what? I think Pep would like that. Yeah. Yeah, it's a good shot, Paddy. Fucking hell. It's only two mid-season. I knew I'd get a good one in. I'd get a pat on the back somewhere. I'm still getting fucking pelts for doing 14 pull-ups. Fucking hell, that's... It was 13, actually. It was 13.

59:03Paddy McGuinness:It was 13. Fucking hell. 13 more than you two. Lost us the quiz. Fucking lost us the quiz, yeah. don't fucking say anything I'm not no no this is we're on the same page here same page we didn't put a fuck all on the page

59:24Paddy McGuinness:fucking blankety blankety it's like Amber and fucking Berada and Joseph Wilcox around this table

59:33I put a little video clip on when I watched that quiz which you agreed with which was Roy Keane not saying what they said he'd said. The corruption is fucking... So basically, they said, I said, can I say Man United?

59:49Paddy McGuinness:And he went, Man United. Yeah, exactly. Man United twice. He never even said it. And how that swept up in the moment. I mean, not that it's got us on now. I mean, I've not stopped thinking about it all Christmas. Yeah, but you know why? Because I don't mind losing, but when it's done with an injustice... I don't like losing. Yeah. It's just the old Brian Clough thing, isn't it? Take all your medals, the overlap, and put them in the bin because you've won and we're fucking cheating. I thought he was here then. I did not. He's from Bolton. He's like that. Hey, I'm looking to do them all on me. I'm sorry.

1:00:20I'm trying to do you all right there, by the way. Fucking hell. He's got a heater. Fucking hell. He tore the blue over here. He's got no extension lead. No. Darren Fletcher. First game, Burnley. It's a way, isn't it? It's a way. A way, yeah. Hey, 4-4-2. Back to basics.

1:00:37Paddy McGuinness:Let's get the win, boys. Mike Bassett. 4-4 fucking 2 he's definitely going to go 4-4 too he'll have to anyway he won't play 2-up front will he? no play 4-4 1-1 Keane and Sesco yeah Keane is a 10 so should we pick the team? Keane is obviously Le Mans isn't it Diogo Dallo I think the young kids are alright have them have them have them have them have them have them have them don't know if any of them are back then they play don't they if Maguire and Deleuze are back they play of course I'm just trying to think from the squad that was yesterday so Hevin Martinez Martinez yeah Sure Luke Shaw Then I think it has to be I want to pick a 4-3-3 I don't know what Fletcher will do But It has to be with Garte No does it I can't choose Probably Casemiro Casemiro You get a little insight Into Ruben Amarin's world now No but It's got to be Casemiro Just because of his quality on the ball And they've got a burn And they should be in control of the game now the two in front Cobb and Mino would definitely be one Bruno Fernandes would be one if he's fit I don't think he is fit who else is in there is Mount Mount's out for a bit Mount's injured again just random do you think when you've played for a obviously this didn't really happen with you but certainly with you when you're at a club where it's not quite working and then the manager goes as a player do you wake up and go thank fuck at least we can start playing know we want to play it depends if you like the manager do you think the united lads will be like that today some of them will be some of them the ones that are out of favor the ones that have been out of favor will certainly most definitely go thank for that i think i might get a game and stuff now and even the ones look when it comes to an end it's usually for a big big reason no i don't think they will be no and when it's happened to me i think newcastle had about eight majors nine miles who got something new is every Every fucker.

1:02:36Paddy McGuinness:Graham. Sir Bobby, who signed me, sacked. Then it was Graham, sacked. Sam Ardice, sacked. Glenn Roder, sacked. It's a fucking jinx, this fella. Who else? Oh. Kevin Keegan came. Alan Shearer came. Did Kevin Keegan go back? Joking here. Fucking hell, Nick. What, all the time you were there? All the time I was there. Fucking hell. Nigel Worthington had a bit of a time there, Spell there, when I was there. He's eight managers here. With Chris Hewton. rude hullet no you weren't there then no you had 9 managers 10 including interim 10 I've been there 5 years 6 years from the age of 12 from the age of 13 14 I think up until I was 30 I won my ad and then his 5 or 6 years at Newcastle I cannot believe that 10 times which was the best Monday morning that fucking hell thank god he's been sacked it's not a nice question I know no it's not a nice question but probably 9 times I'd say I was gutted when Sir Bobby got sacked I was with you I was with you remember I was a siphon Newcastle I was away with England is that when Shira came in no Shira came right at the end Sir Bobby he was a great man inside me so I knew he liked me and then he got sacked Graeme came in Graeme obviously I liked him I got on well with him so yeah I mean I was okay with all the managers none of them disliked me I didn't dislike them some things you don't agree with some of the certain ways of playing, but literally I never thought of walking foot for that.

1:04:09Paddy McGuinness:I was never delighted. Yeah, it always amazed me when a manager comes in, like if you just take Cobby as an example, where he just doesn't fancy him, and then the manager leaves, and then let's say Cobby plays again and does well, and you're going, well, that's the same player. So why did you not fancy him? Do you know what would be interesting? If Cobby, like, if he's fit and he doesn't play the next few games, because then somewhat under light, he's done doing something wrong behind the scenes. We sit here, we talk, we only see the tip of the iceberg and all this kind of stuff we said before if he doesn't play over the next two or three weeks and he's fit then it's telling you something that he's behaving wrong or something you don't know yeah it's amazing how new managers come in and they try and make a point from the last one and Cobby's a great example of being able to do that do you know weirdly as well I just I think like that you know that new manager kind of lift I can see United beating City it's random I can just see them everyone's behind them Fletch has come in they play a different system I could see him beating City with Amorim I don't think City are I don't think they're anywhere near what they have been they're amazing they're amazing standards to get to don't get me wrong they're just somewhat about them I still don't think they're quite right I think if they get the injuries back as in like Maguire the late and them kind of players we've got a chance but I just feel with the younger players at the back they've done brilliant by the way Heaven's been unbelievable to be fair for his age and they are only young only young kids but I wouldn't like to see him against Haaland.

1:05:33No, no. I mean, Martinez against Haaland. You need Delecht and Maguire back for that.

1:05:40Paddy McGuinness:Haaland would pick Martinez up and run with him. He'd be like, you know what you see, a dad from school. He'd score, then throw him in the net. Running down the road like with a little, that's what he'd be like. You just hold him. Like one of them cushions you get. You hold Maguire and Delecht. I take it back everyone, he's got a point. Do you know what the thing is? Sometimes, probably wrongly, I look at both managers and think, can he really beat him this is probably wrong as well the 2008 Chelsea Cup final the Champions League final for some reason I was just thinking all day how can Everham Grant beat Sir Alex in one of the biggest games I just can't see now look don't get me wrong it does happen and I'll look at that game in two weeks I'll look at the touchline is it two weeks City game yeah it's week and Saturday I'll look on the touchline and I'll see Pep and possibly Darren Fletcher sorry is it away or at home how I'm City United and I'll think Darren was like I really like you but how do you are out caught and sometimes it doesn't come to our culture course it comes down to the players if you remember always I was just gonna say games Pepo yeah I'm just gonna say but then all these got a great record against pep and they're not in the same yeah ballpark did I mean so look it's a funny game the capable of winning of course yeah and no one thing that will be will happen the crowd were massively behind them.

1:07:00I think they could beat him. See, we've agreed though, we went round the houses, but we got there. I was giving you a few reasons. You've talked about who you'd like to see take over at United, but who do you think, hand on heart, come summer, will be given the United job? Not who you want, but who you think, looking at the club at the minute you can't get inside their head though can you how do we know we can't make a decision we don't know what Jason Wilcox is thinking do you know what I won't be surprised if they're thinking of your man Nick Maresco I really wouldn't surprise me I don't know are we going to cope with him no no we'll have to go around his house and we'll have to be having like I just think the connections there they might see that as a safe bet for him because they know him I think it was someone

1:07:59Paddy McGuinness:that we're not thinking of because just the Morescu sorry Nick he's just left Chelsea because he probably isn't in control of it all he was saying wasn't he so is he going to come tonight it's all permutation you sit back and you change your mind eight times Tuchel if Tuchel does well in the World Cup and you're talking about Man United not being Man United and people not the big pull and we're saying it still is I'm going to go with you on this little bit is he clever is he too clever to go I'm not coming anywhere near that I'm coming absolutely nowhere near that because if he does well in the World Cup every club in the world will be in for him every club and I mean the top clubs Real Madrid they'll all be in for him that's the part the likes of Real Madrid might have a vacant 60 I don't think it's going great for a round would he then go Barcelona I'm not touching that the clubs we're passionate about it he won't be he'll be more he'll be more clever I'll tell you if Tuchel gets the job who won't be coming to United, fucking Bellingham.

1:08:59So you can forget that if Tuchel gets the job. You've got to pick one. Do you want Bellingham or do you want Tuchel? I want to go top three. Tuchel, I really like Areola. No, I'm going to go Tuchel and a joint second, Emery and Areola. Who? Areola.

1:09:16Paddy McGuinness:Who was the first one you said then? Emery. I thought you said Emery in there. I thought they were coming back. Fucking hell, that's a quick turnaround, isn't it? That's me. Do you know what? who you can say you're free in a minute go on do you know I know it's happened and it's all happened today and it's everyone's talking about it but I do think like a lot of podcasters will be probably a little bit gutted he's gone because fuck me there's been some great content every week isn't there now what now what we're going to talk about do you know for me it'd be too chill sorry too chill for me yeah right so he's both your number one yeah I don't have a number two I hope he's got one No I wouldn't have a number Myle Carrick maybe outsider just just go and get Keeney Oh fucking hell Someone this might surprise you a little bit but when I'm thinking of stars of football the way they play Eddie Howe Yeah The only trouble I'd find with that was having his assistant on the sideline all the time With the tan But do you know something's cozy I'm serious like I used to think the same about this but when you look at Amren on that on that touchline all the crap he's taken he has taken a lot of crap a lot of shit he's had nobody I've never seen anybody out of his backroom staff going to have his back now people can say what they want about Jason Tindall he's always on his shoulder and he's always got his back now he obviously likes the camera a little bit but he never a little bit but he never he never shirks anything I'm telling you now if I am eyes you I want someone there with me I don't want somebody turning around and seeing everyone going like that and they're like, don't look at me, I'm staying on the bench, he's going shit.

1:10:54Paddy McGuinness:He gets up, he's down next to him. He's got sunbeds at Carrington as well. That was fucking perfect for a minute. They've not got sunbeds at Carrington. They had one when we played. So, Scores didn't go on it. People like Vidic was on it all the time. What? Vitamin D for the winter. Proper sunbeds? Proper sunbeds, stand-up sunbeds in the dressing room. That is fucking bonkers. Vitamin D, they say it's a big thing because of the sunlight. you know obviously the foreign lads are used to it yeah Fittum and Dee's a good thing with the sunlight but not on the fucking sunbed it's supposed to be unsafe it's light for six hours you know what I mean and Dee's foreign lads he weren't used to all that was he he's just put it in my head I might get a sunbed on the way home if he's going to buy do you know what people laugh about the thing when it's about Keeney and he might not even want a job he's got a great job what he does now but if you look at the context Man United over the last since probably since bloody they've tried everything they've tried the superstar managers as in Van Gaal and Mourinho they've tried their own one of their own Oligon or Solskjaer they've then gone out and got the one of the best coaches in Europe Amarin obviously there'll be few in between that as well I mean some of them could be divertable some of them have been shocking why not gonna go why not go and say and I said this before why not why don't you have a little conversation with him because one thing I'm sure about he would do next or right right you would leave it leave the dressing room it might fall out of a few it might knock a couple out let's be honest but what he would do the fan base would just go boom we're going we're gonna go like that oh yeah and and and it might be might never happen but I think it's because it'd be like it'd be like Christian I know coming back yeah it would be I tell you I can't believe it but it would take a real strong leader to employ him I'd be excited about that just as a fan of football I'd really like to see you but I think because of the history with Sir Alex it probably wouldn't happen no it probably won't happen people look at how good he was as a manager have a chat with him sit down and chat with him do you want to know something now Roy over the last probably last 10 years has changed unbelievably he's always been a funny lad he's always great company but he's calmed down so much and I know him as we both know him really really well and mates I consider him a mate I think he's at the stage in life where he definitely know his flaws and he bring people in around him that would accommodate the personality and he will blow he will cause problems but I'm telling you now he would he'd put something into that changing room that it's not had for many times but even like you said when he took like Ipswich for instance which didn't work out but you go he did an incredible job about Sunderland an incredible job yeah the reason might be why he has calmed down a little bit maybe because he hasn't had to deal with players yeah I think that could frustrating just what you were saying about Fletcher and Carrick and then having like Stevie Bruce though.

1:13:48Yeah. Would you think Fletcher and Currican having a Roy though? No. That wouldn't work. He'd have to be the number one.

1:13:53Paddy McGuinness:Roy needs someone like Steve Bruce around him. No, but literally, I don't think that wouldn't work. Roy going there is number one with a contract. I wouldn't imagine him going in for a small period. But Bruce, his life's totally different. His dynamics totally different. He's done that many jobs now. He might be ready for a little bit of a... He's doing a lot of talks about Bruce with the United Games. Do you think United fans would love a box office name or would they just love someone to steady the shape and just get this season finished and then go for a box office? It's a tricky one, isn't it?

1:14:29Look, Amarim didn't want to come mid-season, did he? Are you going to get a top manager now to come in mid-season? I don't know. I really doubt that. Many United have still got a great chance at Champions League football. The league isn't great. It's quite a poor league. and you see some of the silly points he dropped. I saw something last night, I think they've won three games out of ten. But if they beat your Evertons, your Wolves, your Bournemouth, that's another nine points. They'd be right there. They'd almost be challenging for the league. That's how bad this league is. Even the last two games, they've won the last two games.

1:15:02Paddy McGuinness:Leeds, yeah, that was one of them. The fourth or third, it's like, it's mad. But whoever takes it on, obviously Darren's taking it now, but if that last season of the season and he has someone with him, whoever takes this job now are only going to do better than what's been happening. Yeah. So if they're furthering their careers, so if Darren wants to be a manager for the next 10, 15 years, if he does well here, which I think he can do with the right people around him, and Michael comes in or whoever, and Bruce just sits at the side, Bruce probably won't go back into management as he said on here before.

1:15:35Paddy McGuinness:But the other two are young and Michael's already done it, but Darren's got aspirations, I think, to go and do it as well. It's brilliant for him. It's like a Steve McLaren kind of thing for him. Go in and go in and just, listen, the way the fans are in that football club is now, the only thing that they can do now is do better. And it's not because the geniuses of what they do, it's just the feel-good factor will change. More players will come back from injury, timing's right, everyone will give it their all. It's like, sigh of relief, the old regime's gone. Whether they liked him or not, it would crap.

1:16:08Paddy McGuinness:And now, they're going to move it forward and hopefully get in the top four. Well, one thing is for certain, Fletcher's going to have to bring two or three with him. I'm pretty sure all this stuff will be gone he's going to have to find two or three names I don't think there's anybody around the club they're going to have to go and get Michael the more you sit here talking about it now I try to think Michael, Mike Phelan Renny Moolenstein them people who are still around to help him do you know something just randomly when a manager loses his job do you see him again did he sort of come back and go just clearing my desk out like do you go oh right good luck like or are they do you actually see him walking out like that no that's fucking orcs he'd have probably been sacked at the train ground this morning yeah they'd have been in it at half seven we went for a meeting at half seven shut up did they've had him in with a trackie on he'd have got the call last night he'd have got a call last night and he didn't know exactly what's coming and they go in you speak to him for two minutes and they go straight in the HR room and then does he two pin bags no yeah honestly I've seen Mourinho go out with all his personal belongings I've seen Van Gaal go out and it's like you go like it's weird and you go out it's a ruthless world and what did they go and see you lads or did they go thanks for letting me down you twats no they're basically they're all different I mean I remember Van Gaal was upset he might have three bin bags actually one with his fucking nine million quid in it I forgot about that one I've heard people singing and shouting I won't name names not at Man United at certain other places running out happy skipping out I've seen people crying I've seen Van Gaal with tears in his eyes people take it differently so you'll see a manager going oh fucking thank god buzzing you telling me Mourinho sorry Amorin didn't want sacking you don't say what you say if you don't want sacking he's happy this morning yeah he's got that monkey off his back he's got a few quid and he's now going to get another job back in his hometown probably bit of sunshine or Spain or somewhere yeah but he's happy and then you've got the flip side of it who would have been Van Gaal who obviously got this big presence about him as an arrogant Dutch man he was devastated I remember going in to him and going I'm also really sorry he's like he was gutted crying and you're going Jesus he's been one of the biggest clubs in the world and his national team Do you know but that passion's what you want isn't it it's funny they get rid of people Well he got sacked after winning the FA Cup Yeah that's crazy The night of the party Like we said before something proper has happened because Man United is hard to get sacked from that might sound strange but it is a difficult place to get sacked from because the board normally support you and the fans will support you.

A seismic day at Old Trafford gets the full GBF treatment as Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt and Paddy McGuinness react to Manchester United’s decision to sack Ruben Amorim.

Why now? Did Amorim’s post-match comments force the club’s hand and did he want to be sacked? The lads dig into the timing of the decision, debate whether there was a major fallout behind the scenes, and ask if Amorim had already heard someone else was being lined up to take his job. Paul and Nicky also explain how they believe Amorim would have been told his time was up.

They also tackle the accusation that United legends like themselves have piled too much pressure on the club with their public comments. Paul and Nicky give their honest views on Jason Wilcox’s role at United and whether his Manchester City links are an issue, and Scholesy reveals an alleged comment from Wilcox about the United  squad that genuinely shocked him.

Attention then turns to the future. What should the United board be looking for in their next permanent manager? Scholesy and Butty run through the names being linked with the job, name their No.1 choice, and Nicky reveals which appointment would be enough to make him hand in his season ticket. There’s also talk of Eddie Howe, Jason Tindall’s potential sunbed requirements, why Roy Keane could be a great fit, and whether Michael Carrick should play a short-term role.

With Darren Fletcher set to take charge against Burnley, Paul and Nicky say exactly what they want to see from his first team selection. Nicky also shares incredible stories of how different managers have reacted to being sacked, including one who cried and another who practically skipped out of the building.

Finally, the conversation widens to recruitment with Nicky explaining why growing a social media following is now a major pull for players. They also  question if United can still attract the very best talent, and discuss the type of players needed to get the club back to the top.
