In short

Football talk on Easter/FA Cup scheduling, Arsenal’s FA Cup exit and Premier League pressure, Man United squad “keep or sell” debate, Liverpool’s slump after a 4-0 loss to Man City, plus broader discussion on player mentality and Champions League “best never to win” lists.

Guests/backgrounds

Paul Scholes (former Man United midfielder) and Nicky Buck (baker/football fan story-teller). Other hosts are unnamed in the transcript but include regular co-hosts discussing Arsenal, Liverpool, and England squad topics.

Key claims

  • Arsenal’s FA Cup wobble isn’t as catastrophic as fans claim; Arteta rotated and momentum is hard to regain after early losses.
  • Arsenal’s league title is still likely, but they’re not “blow teams away” dominant like City; they may need to grind wins.
  • Liverpool’s problems stem from losing the “ugly bit”/edge and not having enough ball-winning intensity; Van Dijk’s “we gave up” comment is criticized as unacceptable.
  • Liverpool face a transition: replacing key players (Van Dijk/Salah/Robertson) will be difficult.

Notable examples

  • Arsenal vs Southampton (FA Cup) and Champions League focus (Sporting Lisbon mentioned).
  • Liverpool 4-0 vs Man City; Van Dijk interview about giving up.
  • “Best player never to win the Champions League” list: Ronaldo (R9), Zlatan, Vieira, Buffon, Bergkamp, Aguero, Silva, Mbappé, Cannavaro, etc.

0:14Welcome to the good, the bad and the football. He's back from his excursion at the Turkish Delight Factory, Paul Scholes. And we've had FA Cup football at the weekend. Hey, firstly chaps, happy Easter. Happy Easter, mate You know what, I love Easter, mate Not for chocolate, for football Really? Friday, Monday It used to be Saturday, Monday, two games in two days People moan at it, it's Friday, Monday And I don't like What are the FA and the Premier League doing Putting the FA Cup on this weekend? Do you not like that? No, it's crap It's for the league Yeah, that's true Saturday, Monday, Easter football is when you can win a league You have two or three games straight away You win them three games, nine points, all of a sudden Fucking hell It's a great tradition for me It's a fixture thing And money as well But before we What do you think about FM Premier League Is it Boxing Day as well What are they doing Yeah that's true This is an English tradition Yeah Anyway I do like watching the footy On Boxing Day though But I'm not the one Who's having to give up The Christmas Day to play There was only one game Weren't there on Boxing Day Sure Yeah

1:17Paddy McGuinness:Rubbish One Before we get into the football Favourite Easter Eggs I used to You know when I was a kid I used to love ones With a cup didn't you Oh so you got a you don't see that but the chocolate was awful wasn't it yeah wrapped in pink foil or purple foil like yeah you had to get roller cola chocolate yeah you got some snide ones in you yeah you break it had to be a Cadbury's one you needed a Cadbury oh no I'm a I'm a galaxy man ah mini eggs mini egg just got the kids them at the weekend can't be a mini egg one yeah I love mini eggs we never used to buy Easter eggs for the kids we used to get them on the New England kit every year oh is there an Easter egg yeah a New England kit used to come out around the east of the thing and we used to get the kids the New England you must have got them a bit of fucking chocolate yeah they got a bit of chocolate as well yeah but it became a bit of a tradition are you a fan of the they do these posh eggs now don't they I think they're too much with like salted caramel this that and everything it's all kind of weird did you ever think when you got a cream egg one that it was actually the actual thing in the middle I did it's all it's best for chocolate when you go into the press switch the Bakers and press switch oh Slattery's Slattery's I've never been that I've never heard of Slattery's it is the best where they get all the Bertha cakes made but you go in the chocolate it is like it's unbelievable do they make it I'll take you there they make it all there all the cakes in the back it's incredible a cafe upstairs yeah you know he said I'm putting that on the list because he's every podcast he's got I'll take you I'll do this and you're like it never happens does it I'll get you a code for it I'll get you a code for Slattery's Hey, by the way, Slash, I'm telling you, it's ridiculous.

2:56I can't believe you've never heard of it. It's like an institution. Hey, speaking of bakeries, before we got on, before we got on, he told us a story. Listen, you lot, strap yourselves in for this because it warmed me up. He told Paul, Nicky Buck told me a story about sausage rolls. Nicky, the floor is yours. Take it away.

3:16Paddy McGuinness:Well, I'm fuming actually and I hope people understand where I'm coming from. So I go into the baker's. You've not had a fight in the baker's? near enough go to the baker's of the day to get a few sausage rolls and yeah one was going to get heated up two's getting heated up from it for me lads to eat straight away so i go in i had all the change in my hand because just thought it could yeah but you get in the old car you can't 250 250 each whatever it was uh give him 10 pound coins so i said oh can you just heat two of them up please because the lab wants to eat them yeah yeah sure no problem so i'll give her the coins and she's counting the amounts of goals.

3:51Paddy McGuinness:And I don't like the woman anyway in there, to be fair. She's a right moody, snotty, not nice, not very warm. You know, you go to your local baker. She's not a slattery staff, is she? She's not a slattery staff. They're always like, they should be like very, very, very, very warming. And very like, grateful for going to the local little deli. Oh, so it's not a chain, it's like a lovely crowd. It's not too far from me anyway, we'll get to that in a minute. So anyway, puts two in the microwave. puts it on for 30 seconds 30 seconds so she goes actually it's it's an extra£1.40 to heat two sausage rolls up I've gone what?

4:28Paddy McGuinness:70p each? 70p each that's yeah that's 140 I'm good at maths yeah I know I weren't pulling you up on it I'll go in and go so how did they work that out? I don't know but I see me half a bit so for 30 seconds 70p times 2 140 so I've gone I had no more chain I went you're charging me 70p? For 30 seconds, one minute, I thought I might have been that. So I've gone, no, I'll just take four cold ones. She's seen them. She's through the sausage roll. I can't resell these now. I went, well, why don't you put on a sign, cold£2.50, hot£3.20. There's no sign there. So just gives four cold ones. Why can't she resell them?

5:06They'll soon be cold.

5:07Paddy McGuinness:Yeah, well, she probably hasn't reselled them much. She's saying they can't for health and safe to ever. So anyway, she comes right over, throws four down on the counter, and I've gone, actually, leave them. She gives them money back. so she snatches the sausage rolls off the counter the sausage rolls fall out of the bag we're out of the floor and she's a steam's coming out of her ear she hands me back the 10 quid I walk out and she's referred to the woman like that to the other woman who was waiting she's like disgusting behaviour I know it is it's ridiculous I'm going I'm fuming because I was starving my son's gone I was starving I want a sausage roll so I couldn't get my sausage rolls but things like that piss me off it's like it's principles it's like what she should have said is actually you're right you can have these for free the extra bit and I'll put a little sign on saying hot I mean you can't just charge people £1 for it who charges people for putting stuff in the microwave I'm not having it when you're buying the sausage roll anyway it pissed me off anyway I think that's do you know when they say don't cut your nose or spike your face I was starving I was absolutely starving should have gone straight down to a Greg's well they're the same you've got a Greg's you've got to have them they're only warm if they're fresh but they're not that warm no are they they're either molten lava or just a bit teppy but to go it's a 70p warm up a sausage roll 30 seconds it's a piece to take so if you had 10 let's say you had a football game and you got 5 you used to go with your dad and there was 4 kids in the back you get 10 it's like 7 quid you try to work it out I think it seems to me this bakery there's a bit of history with him and this lady in this bakery I think she's only charging him 70p I reckon she fancies them the woman the woman that was behind me waiting she's like whispering going yeah they do it all the time it's disgusting and I'm thinking well why I will never go in the bakers again I'm all for never going in again well I'm all for supporting small businesses but I think I think that's when one's where they've gone oh can I just eek a bit more they can't work at 30 seconds 70p can't how do you work that out it's just cheeky it's just and also if you put three sausage rolls in for 30 seconds what's that it's going to warm them all up innit how much is that extra 2 pound 10 Well done, buddy.

7:17It's gonna, it's gonna, it's the same, it's the same 30 seconds. You can't keep putting an extra 30 seconds on. Anyway, that riled me, really pissed me off. Oh, it's all happened this weekend. Do you know the other thing that's caught me? I will get onto football in a minute. Have you ever seen these Artemis space lads up in the thing? There's three blocks one moment. I saw it launch. Have you seen it? They're going round the moon. No. This was on the news the other day, right? So there's four astronauts. It's never been done before. but they're going around the dark side of the moon and they're coming back to Earth.

7:48Epic mission. They're up there for about 12 days or something like that. But they're in a room. Well, I say a room. Isn't it a spaceship kind of thing? But they used to call them spaceships, don't they? Spaceship. Yeah. Rocket. It's no bigger than this, right? Four of them. So that's... For 12 days. That's enough. The toilet's just packed up, right? So there's four astronauts and the toilet as well. I couldn't believe this. So NASA have designed a toilet where you open the floor. Just drop it on the moon. But there's no, like, curtain. You just have to have a shit in front of everyone, right? Three blokes.

8:27I'm going to say something. One lady. Gravity, does it come back up? Well, this is what I'm going to say. You know, it's like me, I get a bit of stage fright if I have a wee and someone comes up at the side of me. That's where you've got a little one paddy. No, no, I just can't cope with someone's shoulders. That's where you've got a little one paddy. No, no. And they're there and you're like, oh, I can't have a wee. You've got your little pecker out of it. No, no. But I'm saying, imagine having a shit in front of everyone. Do you think they do it the other way around, though? Do you know what I mean?

8:50They do it on the roof. So you're upside down. Well, also as well, you'd be squatting down in a spaceship and it's a fucking biro comes floating past your face. Like, you know, seeing them when you go live, there's always a biro or a fucking tennis ball and you're trying to curl one out. It's horrific.

9:06Paddy McGuinness:It's not started very well, this podcast not started well. No, but I'm saying NASA. Surely NASA, you'd put a bit of a private screen, but imagine that. You're up there. there's no way of getting back to earth and your toilet's packed up. I'd sooner have a cracky window. I'd sooner risk depressurisation than... Depressurisation? Where are they going to have a shite? Honestly, no-one's talking about it. This is big news, this. You've got to do that where you have your food as well. Do you know what I mean? It's not right. Do you know why also were you saying about little willies and all that kind of...

9:39I'll tell you why I don't like having a pizza. I was filming Take Me Out once years ago, and we used to have at this studio, we used to have a little port-a-cabin thing, and they set it up as a temporary toilet, and I dashed off. I thought no one will be in there. We just had a break of filming, and I go in, and there's a fucking bloke walks in, and we're touching his shoulders. I'm like, oh, my God. And he starts having a piss, and it's a proper... You know if you've been out in a pub or something and he's like a right aggressive pisser, and he's like... Right jet... like, belt, oh, I'm like, oh, yeah, like, right aggressive, and he's, and he finishes, I'm like, fuck off, and he, he literally shook his dick, like, and as he shook his dick, a blob of piss, went right through the air, honestly, and landed right on my limb, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, ever since then, I can't, if someone comes, I'm like, no, I'm, I, I, I don't, he went, honestly I was like that with fucking swarf eager did you say anything?

10:46I couldn't I like oh

10:53it still haunts me to this day anyhow I think they watched the podcast the Artemis Cree so good luck with the toilet situation but that has kept me awake this last couple of nights looking at that anyhow speaking of shit I was in the

11:11Arsenal out the FA Cup now social media you listen to the football radio shows all the rest of it the Arsenal fans have gone into complete meltdown about this personally as an outsider yeah you're out of a couple of cups there still in the Champions League and you're still going to win the Premier League I don't think it's as bad as what they're making out but what's your two's opinion on it it's a big wobble isn't it It's a big war. But do you think he's not played his full strength squad? So he's obviously not... You tend not to do that in cup games, aren't you? He'll always say I played a team to win the game.

11:48And he probably did in both games. I think the first game was the keeper on it more than anything. But it's hard. Once you lose that first game, it's hard to get momentum back. And again, it's a struggle for a minute. I'm pretty sure the centre-half got injured as well, didn't he? Yeah. The only shining light, really, is the young kid at this point yeah we've said all like I've said all season I don't think it's a great team anyway yeah I don't think the football they've played has been that great to watch but well they've got a big buffer in the league of course but I say big nine points is it well it is nine points but I think City have got a game in hand and they play each other so it could be down to three points and City have just got going as well so it's not City seems to be on a little bit purple patch Yeah, and I tell you, once you start losing games, it's hard.

12:39Especially with the pressure you've done from the last few years

12:41Paddy McGuinness:not getting over that line. It will be starting to get a bit shaky. I think Sir Alex's quote was squeaky bum time all the time. I think they're definitely in that now. Does it not matter that he's not played the full strength squad in a sense that your first names on the team should be thinking, well, you know, it is what it is, FA Cup. And also, because you're out of that, you've got a bit more time now to focus on the league and the Champions League. Yeah, that is one thing. But sometimes it doesn't work like that, Paddy. sometimes you get knocked out with competition all of a sudden you're stuttering another one you just it's hard to start winning games again because you're just getting this rut of yeah look he took a big risk leaving players out because this is what can happen maybe he's not got the experience of that I don't know Martetta because look I still hope they win it I think it I don't think it'd be nice to see him fail now yeah do you know what I mean a lot of people taking joy of course with City fans will say we want to fail of course we will but from where they've been this year I don't know talk about winning four trophies that was never going to happen anyway I'd feel sorry for him if they messed it up I never thought about it like I was thinking oh they're out of two cup competitions as mad as it's I thought they've got a bit of breathing space the big M do you know when you at this part of the season and you look at like obviously our team City's great team that they've had even when Liverpool were flying last season they always get on a roll and they seem to win win win win win, win, win.

14:05Paddy McGuinness:And it doesn't matter who they put in, whether they change the forward or they change the centre-back or they change the keeper. They always win. The best teams always keep winning. They find a way to win. Arsenal have done that over the season. Now they're hitting that little stuttering spot of a patch where they're really struggling to get the results. And I do think, like Scrooge rightly says, when you go in and you're not playing, then you're playing, then you're out of the gate, then out of the squad, then you're not out of the starting team and you're not winning games. It does become a bit of a sticky position that you're in.

14:32Paddy McGuinness:And added to that, the added pressure that they've got to in that Premier League this year it will affect them I still think they will win the league I really do however it won't be straightforward but it should be I don't I keep saying this but I don't think they're a great team I don't think they can go into any game and just blow teams away like your cities could like we could in all this season see you know something I think they could do given the licence to go and play how they want to play I think they get put into a structure by the manager and that's just the way he plays and fair play to him and if he wins that Premier League or whatever else he might win he can go I've told you I've done it doing it my way so I just think the players are good enough are good enough to go and be expressive and go and play a different castaway Declan Rice was a big mess for them wasn't it yeah did you notice what they were doing on Saturday as well they started taking short corners didn't they did they the first few corners I'm pretty sure were short corners I wonder if they've looked at Southampton and gone oh yeah there's been a reason behind it but you think the success divide is all the big lads just crossing the wild set pieces and scoring goals.

15:34Paddy McGuinness:I think the flip side that according to that is if you're an Arsenal fan you're actually now thinking well, you know, we've not got no more distractions anywhere and they've just got Champions League but the focus now is purely on winning that Premier League. It's got to be purely winning that Premier League. Do you know when you talk about that about sacking players for Arsenal? You'd normally think when you talk about player of the year like the PFA player of the year the journalist and stuff I don't think it'd be an Arsenal player and they're probably going to win the league. who would it be but you know something's goes that happened remember in the 99 how Dwight York didn't win that play of the year I'd never know who won it then I think it was Ginola really David Ginola he used to do it at a stupid time I remember he used to do it like in February David Ginola phenomenal football player unbelievable personality within the history of the Premier League but how can I thought Dwight York any Man United player we won the treble you're right what you're saying to not win it the play of the year when you've done that much.

16:34Paddy McGuinness:It's criminal. I can't think of a player who's going to win it this year. What player of the year? Man City, Arsenal. Who's going to win it? Could it be Declan Rice? I think it will. Is it Menor? No. It's only half a season. No. From January. He's a good player. No. Great player, but he's not going to win it. Consistence. Yeah, but he's only done it since January at a big club, isn't he? I don't see that. Do you have to be a big club to win player of the year? You've got to be winning things, I think. No, it's a good point because he did well of the first part of the season. I do think he's got a winning thing.

17:03I think if you're a team that isn't up there. You don't say many good things but I think you just have. I don't. Don't be aggressive. He's in need for that. He's in need for that. How aggressive is that? Honestly, he can't just say something nice.

17:18Paddy McGuinness:He has to caveat everything. People don't know Paul Scholes, I'm telling you. He's a horrible man. Exactly. Do you know what, he's opened my eyes. I never used to wear fucking glasses till I started this podcast. The stress has done me in. I thought that was nice. no I think it's a really good point it was nice but then you took it away sorry you sort of give it me for a second I was glowing Semenyo's a really good shot isn't it I'll tell you what he wouldn't be far off as well Gaye I think he's unbelievable yeah what a sign he's been for Man City but I think goals count as well well they do but they don't always have to but no it's a difficult one do you know what though how good is Max Darwin brilliant unbelievable do you think he should be the Englands one I think I think potentially I think ability wise yeah ability wise yeah but I just think it's I just think it's No, for that, look at Spade.

18:01Get him in. What's he called, Jamal? Yeah. He's been 15, 16 when he won the Euros. Get him in. We've not got a player like him. No. Yeah, but it's too cool when I'm kind of managers who go, yeah, I'll take him. Yeah, I think he is. Oh. You see his goals for the under-20s. What over who? Who do you leave out? Anyone. I don't care. Fucking hell, right, okay. I think he's unbelievable. I think he's brilliant. Wow. A lot of pressure, though. But you want a young player like that, do you really want to throw him into a World Cup? Spain would do it. Spain are successful. He's pulled me onside. I think I agree.

18:40All day long. I didn't at first. All day long. It's exciting, isn't it? I don't think it's an English player with the ability he's got. He floats past people. Yeah, he's doing it.

18:53Again, it's a bit like the Semenya shout, isn't it? At first I was like, oh, but then I'm like, oh, actually he's got a point though when it's like this and it's like I say a lot of pressure and you can't afford to drop any points at all do they do anything different in training in a sense that they'll go with best players go Luke take it easy today like you don't want to risk an injury I think training now I think training now this time

19:16Paddy McGuinness:you're not training you're just doing a little possession based little bits little half an hour small sided games a bit of shooting for the forwards then you probably do a little bit of defensive work for certain games but he wouldn't be on there more than an hour. It's a big job for the manager and his staff now to get these players right because if you're driving into Trailing and you're thinking, Jesus, I don't know how we're going to win a game here. You just get into that mode. Who did you play next? Bournemouth. You get into that mode, don't you? You think, I don't know how I'm going to win a game.

19:49Thinking of them winning the league and I was just reading here on the iPad, 2008 said you're on about United now. you're on for the treble before you lost to Portsmouth again FA Cup when you were saying about momentum did that momentum did that momentum yeah momentum sorry did that really I got a momentum for for good momentum did that really did you feel it amongst the team was it like look we've been in situations where like I said you go into training Jesus I don't know I'm going to win a game now sometimes you might just scrape some a lucky win 1-0 and you're off and running again. But there are situations like that.

20:29Of course, Arsenal, they're in that now. They brought the pressure on themselves in these last two games. Now, that could easily go into league games. Like I say, it's a big job for the manager, a big job for Gabby Irons, his staff, to get some belief back into these players. That's the hardest thing once you start losing games. But just reading here, it's saying after that Portsmouth defeat, then you only lost one game in all competitions for the rest of the season. and that were away at Chelsea. So there must have been something you all did, like, to galvanise the team and go, right, that's us now.

21:03Well, when you say galvanise, it's only one game we've lost at. Arsenal are looking, well, they've done two, haven't they? Yeah. Now it quickly becomes three and four. So from the experience, like I say, you talk about experience a lot, when you've been there, you've been in these situations. Once you get to two and three games, that's when, oh, fuck, what are we going to do? With one game, you're still like, come on. Do you know how it's a big game against Bournemouth at this stage of the season when you're going up against a team like Bournemouth who you know when you come against like it's not as though they're exactly playing for anything major do you feel as though they'll win it or a team like Bournemouth go we might not be playing for anything but we're going to absolutely do your season I think our teams we probably felt like we'd win it because we had so many players match winners you have Cristiano Reigns who ever sent a forward brilliant centre forwards what I'm saying about Arsenal is I don't I can't look at them and say like Saki he's going to win you a game because he's not been in great form Yoko Reyes is he going to win you a game I'm not looking I'm seeing loads of match wins they're going to have to do it a different way they're probably going to have to grind wins out which I think well do you know what I don't know I think they'll grind enough out but I'm not I wouldn't guarantee it I might be I might have the old rose tinted spectacles on here but they're not good They're more blue.

22:24Yeah, no, these are grey, these. Grey lads, yeah. Smoke, I think they call them. When I look back at that United team when you were winning everything, I can't really think about... I don't remember you having many back-to-back losses. Does the psyche as these Arsenal lads now, because they could easily lose a game? You know, you're saying you don't think they're going to go in and blow teams away. How much does that play on their minds? that they know they're beatable.

22:55Paddy McGuinness:They'll know that the pressure is right on them now and it's up to them. I'm sure he's 100 % right in what he's saying about match winners. He's not got many, but what thing they have got from an outsider looking in and who's not an Arsenal fan, they've got an unbelievable team ethic and team spirit. They seem to galvanise themselves together. They're all pushing in the same direction. They've got the set-piece scenario which everyone talks about, whether it's right or wrong. But they have been finding a way of winning and I think they'll do it again. However, I wouldn't be putting my money on it on them it's not like back in the day you watched Liverpool you knew they were going to win the games and the running you knew City would back in our day you put your money and you would do it with Arsenal they're a bit in the unknown no one knows where they are but it's only them can go and do it it's a massive game for them in the midweek in the Champions League because if they lose that as well like Scorsese was saying you get onto a little run I think they could lose I think they'll probably go through but I think they could lose you doubt yourself unbelievably especially when they've got to try and get over that line to win that Premier League Paddy it's called squeaky bum time for a reason your arse is twitched we've always said it you come to this point in the season where you've got they have to win games now and sometimes it's not that easy to do it and also as well if you're picking up injuries let's just say when you look at the team you put out against Southampton I know it's like you bring in different squad players and what have you but Southampton are playing well there's no disrespect to them but you pretty much even if you bring in players you're pretty much expecting anything they put out should beat Southampton that's what I'm saying they should do they're all international players they've got a squad for a reason they built a squad over the last five years to go on and be able to cope with the FA Cup the League Cup the Champions League the Premier League obviously so they build that squad purposely because they know they can't play the same team every week so when they put a team out and Artest puts a team out he will 100 % be thinking this team's good enough to go and win it and he's still got his five or six on the bench we did it for years Sir Alex did it for years left players out for cup games left five and six players out look it didn't always work we did lose remember Leeds we got beat by Leeds years and years ago when we were first coming through we got beat by York if you remember over two legs in the League Cup so look it doesn't always go to plan but you're getting out of it now but if he gets his team back out against Sporting and then again against Bournemouth and he wins both of them then he's a genius isn't he he's done well he's done right because let's be honest he know deep down that they're not going to go and win three trophies or four trophies we were talking about a while ago which was crazy a week ago but it's like he knew he wasn't going to do that his biggest thing now is winning that Premier League I'm telling you now he will sit there and go we want to win every game he will do obviously but he just wants to win that Premier League he would take that right now win Premier League and get knocked out of obviously the Champions League and lose if you said it at the beginning of the season just go and win Premier League that's what he wants to do so he won't be deep down won't be really bothered about the FA Cup No, but they'll certainly, I think if they lose against Sporting Lisbon and it's Champions League, but that's a massive one as well, isn't it?

25:56I'll tell you what, to get the momentum. I think they'll lose away.

26:01Paddy McGuinness:Do you? I still think they've got a chance of going through that, but I think they'll lose away. But I'm telling you now, Paddy, if you said to Arteta, go through there or win the next two Premier League games, you'd pick winning the next two Premier League games. All day long. All day long. Really? In my personal opinion, win them two games against Sporting or win your next two Premier League games he'd want to win he'd take the next two Premier League do you think he'll do the same against against Sporting where he uses more squad players he's got to go full strength that's finished now from Nelson and see that's gone they've had their chance they've had the chance and they've had the big players they've had the rest that's why a few obviously 11 of them didn't go on international duty which is another conversation yeah that was a joke as well wasn't it they're saying that we used to do that not that many not that many not that obvious the amount of times I've gone to England with a pull grind that I make up no don't touch it the one with the back because they can never work the back out can they it was wasn't it it was a back back or hamstring do you remember remember in Poland we were playing Poland away in the summer I don't know if my man said this before I'm sharing the room with Nicky he's trying to pull his hamstring in the bedroom is that a euphemism I've never heard they've never heard it referred to as that just off to pull my hamstring in the toilet he's jumping on the bed trying to kick the ceiling slight exaggeration slight exaggeration everybody slight exaggeration he was going to Euro Disney with the kids we were playing Poland though eh how old would you have been at the time I was going to say you know that's a lie because I didn't have kids then so that's a load of crap I was going to say because if you're that age you've no no you can fucking pull an arm string standing up right chaps that prize guy are back this week with another couple of draws for us you can enter to win tickets to Arsenal versus Sporting Lisbon or Liverpool versus PSG.

27:49Second legs of the Champions League quarterfinals. That's a treat, isn't it? Love that. I know which one I'd rather go to, don't you? Yeah. Well, I don't. They both be quite funny at the minute, wouldn't they? Right, but getting quick because the draws will be made on Wednesday so you've got under 48 hours to get your name in the hat. And talking of Champions League, who do you think, lads, is the best player to never win one? I've got some names on the iPad here that blows my mind. How's Ronaldo, the original, not won a Champions League? Oh my God, I don't know. Especially with the team he was in.

28:29Paddy McGuinness:Some of the teams he played in at Real Madrid were in R9, you'd call him, wouldn't you, because you'd get mixed up. I mean, it blows you away. Then you've obviously got this Latam. How did that team not win the Champions League? I don't know. Remember when they beat us? The Armados, didn't they? Who beat them that year? Juventus beat them in the final? Semi-final. let me read you the list let me read you the list of names here Vieira Buffon Bergkamp Aguero Silva Abramovich well Bergkamp wouldn't fly there would he he'd have to be yeah he cut them right up they were really bad with it well you can get the old Euro doings can't you maybe not Eric Cantona some massive names Van Nistelrooy Fabregas Mbappé Cannavaro Mbappe well Mbappe is only young yeah Mbappe still got a chance to go he's not won two World Cups Mbappe has he won one one scored a hat-trick in the final and didn't win it imagine that was that Argentina yeah score in the hat-trick in the final and don't win the World Cup for me the one that would stand out would be Arnau I mean you can't really look any further than him he's like a god I'm amazed he's on that list I am yeah I'm amazed and Zlatan do you matter do you matter big clubs he's played for I know I know Cannavaro as well back in we were talking a minute ago about the Juve big days when they were phenomenal and no one could beat them Cannavaro's not one of them you two would have played against these in fact has every you two ever scored against Buffon

30:00that's a treat isn't it that'd be like scoring against Schmeichel you know when you go proper ledger

30:06Paddy McGuinness:I'm surprised yeah because looking back in the day Juve they were like the powers weren't they the big powerful team in the Champions League when we were starting to come through he was some keeper wasn't he so you're saying R9 David Silva was some player oh my god Vieira as well that surprises me I know obviously it doesn't surprise me because he's known to be at Arsenal for so long yeah that's true but the one that surprised me the ones like Ronaldo and there's Latanzo have been around all the big clubs and you're thinking they've just missed even like you look at Cannavaro just must have missed that little bit of a purple patch of the club that they were at it amazes me and I never realised this like Arsenal have never won a Champions League doesn't amaze me you'd have thought at some point in their history they'd have picked them up I never remember him playing any big he obviously would have done I never remember him playing any big they got beat in the final by Barcelona I remember that I think they got a good chance this year to be fair it's all Campbell scored actually they won in Paris they got a good chance this year so there you go it's decided R9 is the best player never to win the Champions League and don't forget to get yourself over to thatprizeguy.co.uk for the chance to win tickets to either Arsenal vs Sporting Lisbon or Liverpool vs PSG.

31:23Liverpool at the minute. That 4-0 against City who obviously City are a great team but 4-0. They're battering on it. I think Van Dijk come out and said they gave up. Can we just talk about that? Van Dijk come out saying we gave up. I think that from your captain

31:42Paddy McGuinness:is it's horrendous. It is horrendous and I love Van Dijk. I think he is like, him and Rio are like, head of, the way they play, obviously you've got Vidic and John Terry and Steve Bruce are them kind of players but the modern day football was centre-backs like a Rio and a Van Dijk. They were phenomenal but you capture your leader, you capture, say what you want in the changing rooms to each other. Go at each other as much as you want, close the doors but to come out and say it on TV, I think if you're in Liverpool a fan you go in what do you mean you give up what the fuck's that about giving up don't you think people get carried away with people like Van Dijk it was brilliant for what three or four seasons maybe the proper players are the ones to do it for 10, 50 years you think you're Rios you're John Terry's you're Villich's Steve Bruce Pallant they did it for years three or four years and everyone gets carried away because you're playing well at that moment I'd have them in my best team ever it's like the thing with Salah they're all talking about I'd have them in my best team it's just because they're there in the present what about all them people who've done it for 10, 15 years like I say they're the proper unbelievable players Van Dijk's been brilliant but he's of a certain age now as well and he probably came to Liverpool a little bit too late really I never thought about it like that with like you said the length of time though so would you have Salah and Van Dijk in one of those all-time Liverpool teams?

33:03I don't know it's difficult for all-time Liverpool I'm talking about all-time Premier League teams oh right okay Van Dijk and alan hansen them type of people aren't they i suppose them them two would probably play on there so i think jamie carrigan said it didn't he that he'd have seller in his team but all of a sudden people think you forget what robbie found with it yeah you're forgetting what steve mcmanerman did yeah unbelievable players john barnes peter bazzer so does he does he get in instead of them it's all a fashion in it when it's happening now yeah they're the best in the world but you know

33:34Paddy McGuinness:i'll talk though in any sport any sport you want to talk about it's just because literally you can't compare like a I don't Hanson to a it's all different era different style of play yeah and we have these chats all the time don't you who's your favourite even Man United who's your all time great Man United player how can you do like a Robson Keane Scholes Carrick and also as well if you're at an age where you're watching your team and you're young and you're like players like Van Dijk and Salah who were there and they've done it over a few seasons that's all you're going to be thinking about because you've not been around all these greats I didn't even mention Daglish before did I?

34:13Yeah Daglish Keegan Kevin Keegan Phenomenal Going back to Liverpool it's a mess isn't it really it's a mess the manager's going to be under huge pressure isn't it clearly but I think I sensed it early well I didn't sense it early because I thought Liverpool were in the league you have to remember at the start of the season they spent how much did they spend ridiculous amounts of money I thought they were going to win it yeah I remember we were saying I thought they were going to win it by a long way so to be where they are it is so below but I think I sensed it early on because when I saw Liverpool when you think about Liverpool you probably think of Jurgen Klopp's team don't you?

34:55and they weren't much different even though it was Arna Slott last year they were at you they were in your face they had dogs who wanted to do the horrible bit of football when you saw them at the start of the season when Virch come in brilliant footballer they became like a team that just pretty on the ball when we've got the ball we'll do everything nice and it'll look lovely and at times it's going to come off but they didn't have anybody who wants to tackle anybody who wants to win the ball back and they were just stopping scoring like Van Dijk not bothered they've lost the edge to them which is why do you think that's more

35:27Paddy McGuinness:like the Dutch way of football because I remember Van Gaal come to Man United it was very it was very much possession yeah it was all slow at the back really slow build up that was never Man United Van Gaal did well at United but that wasn't Man United's way of playing and I think Liverpool if you look at Liverpool at the best at the height of their over the last five, six years it's always been under Manal just go and get at them and it reminded us of me and Man United years ago with the two flying wingers you've got full backs get up and down the midfielders are always reliable and get against people and you've got the unbelievable players that play up front and go and score you the goals they don't want to do that when they go back all them great teams he's talking about the possession team they still have two or three lads who are fucking come on do you know what I mean great footballers but will get around and do the ugly bit of it none of them want to do it do you know what the problem is if you look at Liverpool now so let's say Slott was to leave end of the season I think he probably should do whether he does or not I don't know but you're then going to have to go and replace I don't know Van Dijk and Salah and Robertson aren't what they were but you're still going to have to go and place them I guarantee they'll play Robertson in the Champions League game against PSG they're not going to play the other lad they'll play Robertson I think the other lads started doing alright I don't know if he's good enough I think Robertson will play so then you've got three of the lads there Van Dijk Robertson Salah you've got to go and replace them straight away you've got to get obviously the new manager is going to have to come in I think there's a big transition period in Liverpool over the next few years I really do and you think from the start of the season I thought we'd win by 10 to 10 points and that's all okay transitions happen with football clubs all the time and it will happen all the best football clubs from now to the over 100 years it will happen but the problem we've got with Liverpool they've just got there about a year two years ago they got there they won it they've got their unbelievable team and they've added about 350 million worth of talent into that squad and they're still going to have to have a transition period it just seems absolutely crazy it looks like last summer they neglected what they really needed yeah Gehi I mean that must be they needed one if not two and they needed legs in the middle to not get him signed to that football club for what was it 20 million quid or something like that for years what was the reason why that didn't happen I think Palace pulled it but if they'd have gone back and gone actually it's not 20 we'll give you 30 they might have done it I mean even at 34 people were paying more weren't they it was at the start of the season but let's say it was 30 million quid even if they went and said it's 40 million quid he is phenomenal what he's done at City since he's gone there he's going to be the main man for England in the World Cup at the back he's going to be he's the main man at City now at the back and you're thinking his English player is young what would he be 25, 26 and he seems like a good sensible footballer and you're thinking even if he's cost Liverpool with the money that they're flowing around 60 million it's a bargain it's crazy what would you have done in January if Liverpool and City would have come for you what do you mean who would you have signed for in January I'd have probably signed for Liverpool it's a tough one isn't it yeah but the pep factor with me I was thinking about the pep factor but how long is he going to be there?

38:35Paddy McGuinness:Pep factor. If Pep was to sit down and say I'm staying in the number of three years here I'm staying in City. Yeah. But what's going on with him? If he said I'm there for three I'm there for six months I'd be going to Liverpool. Really? Yeah. Do you know just talking about Slott and Oh low I won't play fucking any of them I've got to be honest. He's thought about that now he's gone. Here we go. He's got a jail-free card out there. When you're saying about Slott might be gone at the end of the season and I may have heard this wrong I think I've seen it on a short on YouTube or something Steven Gerrard we're actually saying on the overlap he wants Slott to do another he doesn't want him to get sacked well what do you want him to say?

39:16well you're always honest you've got to say it as you say it people are talking about Steven Gerrard being the manager well they're on about him coming in with I'm pretty sure in the back of his mind I'm pretty sure in the back of his mind he won it, of course he will almost similar to the way Michael Carrick's doing that job so he's not gonna say what he wants to manage yourself deep down he'll be thinking they go they've

39:38Paddy McGuinness:got a chance yeah of course it's immoral Alonzo and do you think you could work together I don't think Steven said he would but I'd go on knowing him I don't think he'd ever want to be a number two there's just some people you see unless it was with a really old a capello or something coming yeah I don't see it now not once you've managed Rangers you've managed Aston Villa I don't seem And you know Stevie as well Roy did it to be fair When there's a number two match I just never Look, Roy might tell you Something different But Roy's a manager Roy's a number one Yeah I mean I think Stephen's Probably pretty much I can't imagine him Working for Alonso I just can't see it No I can't I could probably see it The other way round But Stephen just looks like A number one to me Going back to Van Dijk saying We give up When Your captain Or a team mate's out Doing the interviews do you have it on in the dressing room no do you have Sky on or out like that no so how do you how would they have heard that he said that well nowadays they're all on the phone in changing rooms aren't they you can't not see it you can't not see it no what I'm saying would the phones be will it be as quick as while he's out there doing it when he comes back they'll be seeing it when they get changed and go out of that changing room they're on the phone and wherever they are their own boxes nowadays or the players lounge or whatever it is they go to or on the way home they'll probably get it then but I just think I just find I don't I said I'm an older guy I played football a long time ago I just don't see why he'd come out and say that Playing devil's advocate do you think because obviously he knows that team he's in there he knows his teammates do you think he's actually said that because he's thought that's the best way to get a reaction out of them I think it's gone past that I think it's gone past trying to get a reaction out of Liverpool the last 15 games this year fucking mad that isn't it obviously it comes from they're letting the manager down really when you say stuff like that imagine if we'd have said that in front of Sir Alec oh my god if you say you give up on a football pitch you wouldn't play I tell you now you wouldn't play again or I tell you what would happen they'd be in this morning and the manager would be saying right you said that you're the captain you point out who's giving up and say if it goes like that he's giving up then he's got to answer if he's giving up or not it would be going off like you wouldn't believe it might have been to the point where some people would get taken out The only thing I can remember with United with that, and again, I can't fully remember what the issue was, but Roy did something similar, didn't he?

42:07He did an interview on MUTV or something. I don't think he said he'd get up, though.

42:12Paddy McGuinness:What he said was, we've got to do better. Was it Fletcher? Did that work, though? I wasn't there. Did it work? I can't remember what actually happened. Well, it didn't work. Roy ended up leaving, didn't it? It didn't work for him. Right. Unless he wanted to leave. I don't know but yeah that I don't think did we actually watch it did he make us watch it I think we watched a bit of it in the manager's office possibly didn't go out publicly though no it didn't go out publicly no what Roy said was probably just what he does now exactly the same we weren't very good we were terrible at Middlesbrough and he just said that really he was saying the truth but obviously the manager didn't quite see eye to eye with him and Carlos as well on the Van Dyke one I just find it strange to say it all you've got to do is go yeah we wasn't good enough we've got to do a lot better all the right usual quotes you say and then go in the changing rooms and shut the door and then just have it I think Kevin Nolan said the other day didn't he when Scorsion on one of his holidays he won he's thrown that in no Kevin said he did something similar in a League Cup game didn't he he said to the manager let me just sort this out and as a player and as a human being you want to be fronted up you've got to have your chance to go back and that's just my character I know it's his character as well you wouldn't want someone I wouldn't want someone saying that about me I drive and come in changing rooms and really go at me and have it out there or the amount of times during the season you have no if someone's not going right you have a team meeting between yourselves and the captain sort of sounds a few home trues I actually remember once when I think it was Steve McLaren Steve was there when he came in one of his first meetings we got beat by someone at Old Trafford who was terrible probably a little bit like Liverpool at the weekend and Steve came in the dressing room he called the meeting Steve bear in mind Steve's been there two weeks or something he's like what the fuck's this he started hammering everyone and he went for remember he said on air I went for Roy on purpose yeah but he did squirt at Roy first yeah the shit house sorry Steve not a shit house but you know what I mean yeah so sometimes just little things like that they get you going again i i just think it's gone past that do you know something as well though football has changed you know there's not them kind of characters no more they're not there players can't handle criticism they can't and it's it's society even kids can't as they're to get kids can't no you're right yeah my lad plays football he's a bit different he's a bit older now when he was younger he got in the car i think he was 15 16 he goes and he must have knew i was pissed off drove about an hour and a half to watch him he was shocking so he sits in he goes like that it's all quiet and he goes I don't think I did today dad now I said that to my dad it have annihilated me for an hour and a half all the way home it had gone you're shit you're embarrassing you're not worked hard enough you need to work out it's got to be all the news we've all been brought with yeah all I said to him was yeah you didn't do too good today mate I thought you could have done a bit better well that was like it was like he couldn't handle it devastated what do you mean right so it is it is there is a different yeah different outlook managers got managers have got a sense and to be first, Sir Alex, he did.

45:23And when we first came in, Jesus Christ, don't go near him. But towards the end, look, he'd still go off on one, don't get me wrong, but he realised what people needed more. So if he's going mad at one of us, it's normally like one of the local lads, one of the English lads. He'd hammer us. He'd hammer us. He'd hammer us. But I remember someone getting bullied, I don't know if it was me or somebody else, I remember seeing Nani and Ronaldo's face. I'd never seen anything like it. Yeah. So that's when you start, you've got to change to yeah so you play one of them got a ball i can do they wouldn't know what

45:56Paddy McGuinness:to do honestly first i think it was one of the first torpedo moscow i think it was and i think it was in c and the minds of going to each other and i was sat not too far away literally a coat can come flying across the room i've gone like that it's exploded on the wall he's throwing cold cans people obviously not to hit him but over the head to get their attention and get people wound up. However, them characters in that dressing room liked that, they needed that. So, what Van Dyke, even though I'm sitting there going, I can't understand why he's done it, he might know, well he does know a lot better than me.

46:29Paddy McGuinness:He might look at that and go, that's how to get something out of him. You are right what you're saying, but I just, it just doesn't sit right with me. To say to, what, 60 ,000 people that go and pay their money to watch that Liverpool to say they give up. For the working class man on the street, I think it's shite. And also as well, I think Liverpool fans are good with the team. You know what I mean? They are there from thick and thin, aren't they? Brilliant fans, yeah. Very much like United fans. It's a bit like, another one I can't understand is Sir Bozla, when he goes over to them and he's like, a lot of them went on the 70th minute.

47:01And again, yeah, exactly, quite rightly. You've paid your money. You're going, even if you lose, I think most football fans, if your team loses, but looks like they've gone for it, you're there for them.

47:13Paddy McGuinness:I can't understand that either. He's got himself into a cult figure with that football club on the last two seasons. Free kicks. It's been brilliant. It's been brilliant. I watched him and I thought, gee, I didn't realise how good he is. He's a phenomenal footballer. Yeah. But that little thing there, everyone makes mistakes. I mentioned the other day I did something at Newcastle, stupid dick. You get away, but to do that, having a pop at people going home 20 minutes early when they're going to stay and watch it get annihilated, then you've got to wait for two hours in traffic to get home. Then they're going to, why would you?

47:43Paddy McGuinness:Do you know what? Just get off the pitch. Just get off the pitch. The players will be sat there in the training rooms getting all the food after a little bollocking. Get the food. They're getting a nice transportation going on. You're not getting on a train or doing something like the fans have to do in traffic after watching, let's be honest, a load of shite and they're getting beat 4-0. It's not acceptable. And to do that and let it go, why are you not staying for us? I think it's fucking really bad. Do you know the weird thing? They could actually go and beat PSG. Oh yeah, I think they could.

48:09Do you know what I mean? Yeah. I'm telling you. If you get one of them special nights at Champions League in Anfield, on that cycle travelling I'm telling you it wouldn't be the biggest now look PSG are unbelievable and I still expect PSG to go through but but it's a little bit weirdly enough on a free kick are you still here are you like

48:28Paddy McGuinness:the good the goal is right I think that's Liverpool we said it a while ago Liverpool are a bit like a city in that sense that they can go and beat anybody on the day yeah on their day I think they would say that usually but they just look that far off it don't they they won't win it over two I can't see not over two games it can happen I just I just can't see they're that far off none of the players want to play nice football like I said and against PSG you've got to stop do you know just again PSG are probably the best team in the world this is why I like doing this with you two because I love just asking them questions from a fans point of view so where he's gone like that to the fans then for him to do that do you think there's something in that team where they've all chatted about fucking fans are a nightmare or whatever Or is it just him on his own going?

49:16Do you know what you'd be doing as a fan? You'd be telling them, fuck off. Yeah. You'd be like, fuck off. And I'd expect that. That's why, look, you have to go and thank your fans for whatever's happened after a game. What score it is, whether you've won, you've lost. You've got to do a little bit, but you keep yourself quiet. You might do that and just fucking fuck off. Because fans are everything, aren't they? That was a time for a lot of clap. I can understand, though, if the fans are going like to him,

49:39Paddy McGuinness:abusing him and he goes like that to him, you know, come on. But to do it because they're going and they're leaving early, and they're getting beat 4-0 with what, 20 minutes left? Yeah. I mean, that's a bit harsh. With the dross they just produced as well. What do you think Slott does after a game like that? Because when I saw his press conference, he, to me, looks like, I know Dutch managers, they're a little bit more laid back. I know Van Gaal weren't really laid back. He knows he's in trouble. Yeah, he kind of had that sort of demeanour a bit like, he wasn't like human. A bit defeatist. Yeah, well, you're going to be after the result of that, but after the season they've had them it looks like the players have given up do you know what I mean Van Dijk said it and once your players give up on your manager and the manager look he can say he knows he's in big trouble now he's not stupid is he look if they go out badly against PSG and it when I was saying could beat you but it could also get really messy against PSG that might be the end of it then why bother keeping until the end of the season you know what I mean it doesn't matter wow you say before the end of the season look at it if it's a bad defeat it could be the end do you know what I think Liverpool have won 400 million last 15 games I was going to say do you know where there is a possibility before the end of the season I think as a scenario is if Everton go no if Everton go above Liverpool now that's that's a problem and there's a chance and Everton by the way great team spirit shows you David Moyes he won't bet against them yeah they play Everton they've got they've got the derby coming up aren't they at Everton I think because the new ground after the first one Liverpool Liverpool got United as well it's going to be live no then there's a question there then if they go above them well I think there'll be a question after the PSG games I think there'll be a big it looks it could get messer PSG like I've said it a few times PSG are probably the best team in the world they can hammer teams now look if they do that to Liverpool it wouldn't surprise you if they sacked him and brought Stephen in until the end of the season I don't think I don't think Stephen Gerrard would do that I do Liverpool he'd do anything for him no yeah I know that and I know he's a legend and everything else no what I'm saying is like going in just for a few games and it doesn't work out I'm just saying I'm just thinking what might happen I don't I'm not saying I don't really care about Liverpool and I don't care I don't want you don't want anybody to get sacked I'm just looking ahead and thinking this PSG game could get a mess and look after what Stephen said the last week or so it wouldn't be the biggest surprise if Stephen was to go in it does cause the club a problem to then not give him the job that's what I'm saying to go into the end of the season that's where United are now yeah that's exactly what United are like exactly and let's be honest even more so with Stephen being the local lad do you know what though Stephen to get the job who's more suited than Stephen Gerrard to do a Liverpool job no one I don't think do you know what I mean no one unless Klopp came back would you that's where I think sorry mate that's where I would think Gerrard would come in as a number two with a Klopp nah no chance I do I think he'd do it as a number two with a Klopp I don't think he'd do it with because of the age difference the age difference the learning journey the problem with Steven as a number two though he's always going to be in the background he's always when this lad gets sacked he's always going to come in I just don't see Steven as a number two now do you know I think Klopp and Gerrard I'd I'd again I'm not a Liverpool fan but I'd sooner have Klopp and Gerrard as opposed to Alonso and Gerrard I think you're right though imagine that fucking hell what it'd do for the the fans the city the team and there's no hiding with them two running the show is there but then I think I'd say Klopp or Gerrard I wouldn't you wouldn't have both no I wouldn't have both do you know something it's a similar scenario with Roy when Roy first left United everyone expected Roy to go back everyone expected I did anyway as a manager one day if Stephen doesn't get it this time round will he ever get it to go and bring a younger player in like Alonso Stephen's got to be thinking it's not happening do you know what it's weird with managers because look at United over the years they've had the best managers come in it's not quite worked you bring Michael Carrick in knows the club did alright at Middlesbrough nothing out of the order at Middlesbrough and look how well he's doing now when you look at Stephen yeah I don't know it was in South, we don't see Saudi football doing well.

54:12I don't know. A good job at Rangers. He did a great job at Rangers, probably Aston Villa probably didn't go as well as he would have thought. I'm not saying you don't need to have a massive history in the game to go and be a manager of your own club. Now look, Michael might not be successful, I don't know. He might not get the job permanent but what he's doing now, it shows that I think he's capable. Just, I know it's always a random question and I'm not putting you both on the spot but again, you are it's working out alright now I'm going to put you on the spot are you still saying he shouldn't have the job permanently no I'm not saying he shouldn't yeah Michael I think he's put himself in a much better position now look the thing you I'm not going to say it's quite easy to win games now because it isn't of course Man United everyone wants to beat Man United but it's easier now to win games from what he's come into after Manu didn't do great he put round pegs round holes and all that kind of stuff the big question would be the first 10-15 games next year when you have to win games you have to put yourself in a position Champions League the league that's when it becomes a proper job look we won't know if Michael's the right choice so people say you need two or three years but I think you'll probably know like next November

55:26Paddy McGuinness:the thing with the Michael scenario is it's all well and good saying to people saying he's not quite ready for the job which I get that side of the argument as well but for me if you're asking me a question it's like well if you don't give it to Michael who are you giving it to? And there's nobody I can think jumping out going that's the man. So that's why I think Michael will get it. Number one he's doing a good job. He knows the football club. Even more importantly I think the people that are above him will like working with Michael he's not going to cause him too much of a headache. He's not going to start being a Mourinho.

55:57Paddy McGuinness:It will be an easier choice. And also their get out if that was to go wrong they're not actually saying we're not taking him I don't know anyone they're actually jumping out speaking to he's on about the Nilesman Nagelsman Tuchel's side Ancelotti again I don't think he would come I really don't think he would come so there's nobody there in my eyes going well you've got to take him it's not like a Mourinho has come available or a Klopp's come available or someone that you know you can go and get sometimes like you say managers just look right yeah and just looking at Michael the way he handles himself not so much the way he dresses but yeah yeah he just looks right doesn't he he looks he's not he's unflappable as well well like I say he's unflappable now because everything's going alright yeah it's a different kettle of fish starting I'm saying let's see next November if they've lost two or three games all of a sudden seventh or eighth in the league maybe lose a Champions League game then that's when the big test will be and look I think Michael can handle it and to be fair as well I know you're going to move on here in a minute and it might tie into this but I think if you are going to give it in you've got to make it public to sort it out now because they've got to start a recruitment process as well because literally they have to do that now because that is allowed it should have been going on from January hopefully it's been going on January February but now if they're going to give it to Michael he's got to have a say in it he might not be able to have the whole say or even a 50 % of it but he's got to have a say in who them players are going to come in Now speaking of what you just said then I thought oh that's led me in nicely that That's what I do for you Thank you Strap yourself in United fans because this is going to get very interesting.

57:41Manchester United, keep ourselves. You're just trying to get us in trouble there, aren't you? Well, no, but this is exactly what he said before about modern football and you've got to be different with people and you can't upset anyone. I love you two because you really do, even though it can cause a problem and whatever, you really do say it as you see it. And I think in this day and age... That fucking jump is rubbish.

58:10he's in a fucking brown waffle fucking tracksuit and don't get me starting on your Claire Rainers because I'll go in yeah don't have to snap back all the time why can I not just why can I not just fucking right anyo right thank you he's gone for waffle I quite like your jumper as well thank you do you know do you know this is lovely this he's coordinated he's coordinated it's golden I don't want to talk about it do you know thinking about the weather changing this podcast is known for it's lovely knitwear you know people watch it they get the knitwear on they get the knitwear on fucking this is look at the look he's come fucking dressed as a monk and he's having a go at me do you look like the pyjamas give you on a plane do you look like the pyjamas give you on a plane don't you you're going on a plane today that's what I'm doing flying I'm flying virgin graphing although having said that the people at Allo are watching is lovely come on

59:16Paddy McGuinness:back to Man United let's not bottle it right okay here we go right so this is keep or sell let's go through some of the names on the iPad here sell sell sell sell let's start with Dallo why are we not starting with layman's I want to just start a little bit more oh yes no right well let's go Lehmann's then alright let's go fucking hell let's go Lehmann's then keep all day long he's been probably one of the best signings the club's done for a long time very calm looks like a real top keeper I can't remember how young he is he looks about a lot older than he is but yeah I think you definitely keep him keep right okay Dallot oh hello

1:00:04Paddy McGuinness:just keep just just I think definitely keep I think he's been there a long time now is he the the top top right back or left that way we're gonna play to get you to the latter stage of the Champions Leagues and winning Premier League maybe not but what he is is a really good I keep it really good squad player really reliable definitely yeah Masra we so I would have said keep starting the season I thought he started off real well but he's just seriously not playing much more than he's been like a right size centre half and they don't play with three centre halves he probably has one of a five or six but I think I've probably time to let him go now are you saying yeah Delewitt you have to keep him he's had a bad injury he's not had a chance to get going what's wrong with him he's disappeared he's back I think is it is it a bad one I don't know but I think he's a top talent we tried to get him for a good few years before that didn't we as a player I'd definitely keep him I think between him and Harry Maguire who you keep I think you just keep one of them now if he was which one then?

1:01:09well if he was fit I'd probably just go for him well I was just going to say Maguire

1:01:19this is I'm enjoying this is his quietest I've seen on both they're shitting bangers they don't know what to say I think he's been really good he's brought himself back from the dead wheel I think he's been sensational I'm so so pleased for him but I'm I'm thinking about a United team who you want to win the league win Champions League and that's where United should be aiming I'm not sure you'd do that with Harry Maguire I think unless you've got someone like a Rio next to him

1:01:46Paddy McGuinness:then possibly I'd keep him definitely I think he's I get him what's going on where he's come back from there he's shown unbelievable character look he is what he is Harry he defends that edge of the box he's great in the air he's great in both boxes in the air he's commanding is he going to play every week for you no is he going to go and win you the Premier League like a young Harry Maguire with someone next to him yeah but it's Man United you've got to be talking about winning the Premier League yeah but I think you need more than just I think you need four of them I think you need four centre backs one of four you'd probably take but I'd have De Ligt in that as well as a one of four do you know what I mean so I think they're both quite similar I think De Ligt is a little bit younger so that's on his side probably a little bit quicker so I'd probably just go for Delict.

1:02:30The age is it? I don't know what's wrong with him. Now, this one, I've been looking forward to this one. Martinez. Do you know what? After publicly, we got a bit of shit in my face. Nicky said he was getting carried like a baby by Harland. No, in all seriousness, when he was playing, I thought he was really good. Yeah. I do. I genuinely think he was really good. Now whether When I'm talking about A one of four You think about Maguire And De Ligt With a Martin I don't think he suits them I think they need Somebody more dominant More quicker More stronger More better Just someone who just Takes the ball off centre-force Get out of my way Yapstam Real Ferdinand He's quite physical though Isn't he though Yeah He's been great The one thing I like about him I think he's a great left foot I think he plays he can play football really good but are you winning the Premier League and the Champions League with him as your centre half again I think every centre half they've got they need a better one next to him do you know what I mean I agree with that so is he staying or is he going I'd probably just keep him right okay keep

1:03:47Paddy McGuinness:yeah I'd keep him I mean again you can't keep everyone you've got to have to get rid of a couple to get ones in but when he's played he's been always one of the you've kept everyone so far oh yeah but one of the top players he has and I had a spat with him it's nothing it's a bit of a lot of crap really when people start getting carried away about a few things you say when he plays he's very good he doesn't play enough he doesn't play enough games and I just said the same thing about the late keeping so it looks like I keep the late because he's not had a chance to stay fit he's had a bad injury on his back he's young it's a big debate when you recruit can you keep plays an outfit I'd like to if we're sat around a recruitment today we're looking at his appearance stats they're not going to be great but when he plays he plays very well and he's a good player he's aggressive he reads the game well he likes goals he's great with the ball at his feet he's got a lovely left foot he's not fit enough One thing you need with centre-halves that they're fit all the time I think for me the ones we've got look Aaron Maguire is probably fit most the other ones are With Maguire the reason why I say Keith Maguire is I think he'd accept not playing every single week.

1:04:57Paddy McGuinness:Yeah, which is one of four. Yeah, I think the late has to stay to try and help him get fit and he's still only young. Martinez, I don't think, would accept not playing if he's fit and he's not fit enough and he's injured too much times. When he plays, he's fantastic, as we've said, and at his age, I'd be letting him go at 28. Right, okay. Dogu. I don't know what he is. He does some great games. He's brought him in as a wing-back, didn't he? He's not really played wing-back And he actually done all right. I'd probably sell. Sell. Yeah. But it's like Nicky says, I'm not sure what position he is.

1:05:32I don't know. Look again, if you keep him, he's just a squad player. Yeah.

1:05:37Paddy McGuinness:He's not your Dennis Irwin or Luke Shaw when he's always fit or Gary Neville. He's not a regular. He's not your regular player at a fullback. He's not. So get somebody who can do that better. If that's the case, you've got to get rid of him. Dogu. Oh, sorry. Yoro. just a young centre back isn't he I'd be putting him out on loan me so you keep him I keep him I'll put him out on loan I've played a lot of money for that I think he's struggled I think there's something in there I think he needs a bit of time but if he had to make a choice now I'd probably sell him right Shaw Luke Shaw for me is one that everyone everyone will go against me I know for it because he's injured all the time when Luke Shaw's fit he's the best left back in Europe for me when he's fit right again he's not always fit best left back in Europe when he's fit and he's at his peak he's up there with the best left backs in Europe pace wise I think he's brilliant I think two or three years ago when he was playing consistently I don't think probably a better left back in the world not just Europe but if you ask him now like he's done alright appearance wise this year funnily enough but I'd sell him he doesn't play enough games I'll be keeping him want a cold and Luke if you're watching yeah I think you're one of the best left backs in the world and I will have that cord for hallowed clothing off you thanks pal Mason Mount look again I'm not sure I'd probably sell him and I like him he's a great footballer but he's never going to play in front of Bruno Fernandes and I'm not sure what other position he can play and he doesn't play enough games does he no right that's the first one I think you've both gone sell straight away.

1:07:21Paddy McGuinness:Only because of the situation. It's not that I don't think he's a good player. I think he's a top, top, top player. I would admit Chelsea when I've seen him, I think when he plays for Man United, he doesn't play enough and he's not going to play in front of Bruno and scores. Do you know, when he signed for United, because like you say about Chelsea, good player, do you think he signed for United going, I'm going to be a squad player here? No. No. Not a 60 million quid was he or something. No. So what happens then? Why does that become a thing? What? Yeah. Is it just because you're just not doing the business?

1:07:53He didn't play better. I don't think he's not done a business. He's not been fair. Right. He never got to run a game to the team. Listen, most of the players

1:07:59Paddy McGuinness:we're talking about here, because it'll be, no, it'll be snips will come out and it'll be our skulls and butts as if selling. Pretty much every single player we've said to sell is because of an injury. Yeah. It's not because they're not good players. When you're injured, and it's not because of one injury, it's over seasons. When you've got that much injury prone, it's really difficult to say keep them they're unbelievable players now I know for a fact if Luke Shaw had done what he's done this season the last two seasons Scores would be saying keep him but he's letting him go because he's injury prone it's not because he doesn't like him as a player and the same with Mason Mason Mount is a phenomenal football player and when he's on game there's not many better than him the only problem he's got is the one that is playing before him is the captain in the football club I'm better than him I'm always fit I was just going to say always fit speaking of which you prompt him in the Fernandes I mean he's just the best player I mean he's the best player the club's had for a couple of years Talk about player of the year in a team that look for the first half it was terrible he could easily be one Keep him back but I think it'll be I think the club will have to sit him down and explain which way the club's going and what the players are targeting and stuff to keep him because he could go any club he wants Right we know he is going Casemiro Yeah I think it's right look he's been brilliant he's turned another one who's turned his fortunes around really he's been very good but United need they need strength in that position yeah Casemar's been since the turn of the year and Michael come in I was the one it's probably much like everybody saying his legs have gone but what he's done the goals he's scored the way he's played there's no coincidence he's got the right people around him in Kobe and Bruno now at the right areas he's played fantastically well but you know he's had an unbelievable career he's been phenomenal won five Champions League I think he's phenomenal that is a position United have to strengthen but he's time to go the probing it you talk about them three-centre midfielders it's all about it was a water and Anderson and the sinners you don't want to Nala you know the probing it to the three on you know what God could take all three okay who got it nothing so go yeah man who just keep Kunya keep Zerxy sell Diallo keep keep Mbumo keep Seshko keep keep the squad player get someone better I like it man it's alright I do but I think you need to go and get someone better well anyhow that was the Easter episode of the good the bad and the football in fact I think we're the only podcast working today grafters we're grafters We show up for the fans.

Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt and Paddy McGuinness are back together on the latest episode of The Good, The Bad & The Football. The lads dig into Arsenal’s wobble after they suffered back-to-back defeats for the first time this season, with the latest coming in their FA Cup exit at Southampton. They discuss just how hard it is to stop a losing run once it starts and whether Arsenal’s lack of match-winners could cost them in the title race. There's a surprise admission from Scholesy about who he hopes wins the league and he makes a bold call on the one player he believes simply MUST be in the England squad for the men's World Cup. Meanwhile, the number of Arsenal players who withdrew from their national teams during the international break sparks memories for Nicky of the time he tried to pull his own hamstring to avoid a call-up.Liverpool’s heavy 4-0 defeat at Man City comes under the microscope too, with Paul arguing the squad has lost too many of its unsung heroes who did the dirty work, and questioning whether the current group are letting the manager down. Nicky doesn’t hold back either, taking aim at Virgil van Dijk’s post-match comments about the team giving up at the Etihad and asking whether the mentality is where it needs to be. The lads also debate whether Liverpool missed a trick by not signing Marc Guehi and whether a huge result against PSG could still flip the narrative, or if things could go from bad to worse for Arne Slot. And if that happens, could it mean a return for Steven Gerrard?Paul and Nicky also turn their attention to the summer ahead for Manchester United, firstly arguing whether Michael Carrick should keep the head coach job full-time and secondly, picking which players they would keep and who they would move on in the summer. And because it wouldn’t be The Good, The Bad & The Football without some weird and wonderful stories, we find out why Nicky fell out with a staff member at his local bakery and Paddy recalls a truly unfortunate incident at a urinal while filming Take Me Out.If you want to ask the guys anything about football email them at: questions@goodbadfootball.co.uk.Follow The Good, The Bad & The Football:YouTube: www.youtube.com/@goodbadfootballpodInstagram: @goodbadfootballpodX/Twitter: @goodbadftblpodTikTok: goodbadfootballpodFacebook: www.facebook.com/goodbadfootballpodEnter for the chance to win tickets to see Arsenal v Sporting or Liverpool v PSG: www.thatprizeguy.co.uk
