Which makes you wonder, what would a caveman think of Jägermeister? Well, if you served it warm, he'd probably throw it in your face, say Oonga Boonga, and storm off. And nobody wants that. So drink it cold or not at all. Jägermeister. Damn, that's cold. Drink responsibly. Jägermeister liqueur. 35 % alcohol by volume. imported by Mass Jägermeister, US White Plains, New York. He was excited He never got like that I've never seen him like that No, I think we've got Ronaldinho done So, top five sports Right To watch on the telly Bag of crisp, pint of beer I like watching the Gaelic football actually

1:51Paddy McGuinness:Name me a Gaelic football player. I don't know, innit? He's called him out. He's called him out. Welcome to the good, the bad and the football. Well, get the contract out, put it on the table, someone find a decent biro. Carrick's at the wheel. The mood is high in GBF HQ today. Lads, I was watching the game and I was thinking about your little face. He sat at home, I thought he'd be beaming ear to ear. And I've got to say as well, for me as a neutral, thoroughly enjoyed it. Good game of football. Yeah, for me, the thing, what it was, it was like an old school game where no matter who you support, it's a good game of football to watch.

2:35Paddy McGuinness:And it's been a while since we can say that about Man Utd. Obviously a great result against City last week. I don't think the game was that great, but yesterday it was like a proper game of football. And all the players were brilliant. and the performance, the result, the fans at the end, it's what it used to be like and what it feels like for being a Man United fan. And Michael, whether you should get it full-time, it's by the by. What he is doing is putting some energy into that team and some happiness into the fans, which is what people have been asking for for a while. Absolutely. I didn't realise this about Carrick until I looked you through my nose.

3:10He's unbeaten as a United manager, even from his last stint as well. Three or four games last time. Yeah, and he's beat Arsenal twice as well. I mean you can't argue with that no you can't Michael's just simplified things we said last week he's just playing people in the right positions and all of a sudden they look a good team again don't they there's no there's no confusion about what they're doing they're all playing where they should be and they look we actually said when Amorim was here when they actually went forward they've got good players attacking players

3:41Paddy McGuinness:I know he got man of the matches today Big Harry so he got his accolades today but having him back he keeps it solid you know Martez as well doing well next to him but the defence is solid I'm sure he's speaking to the city midfielders in front of him he just sees a lot more solid like Casemiro was good as well Casemiro was good as well sits in front of it and what Harry does I think the days are gone where he can sprint into channels and defend that way but what he does he defends the box really really well and he commands the people in front of him obviously he's linked it all up there and it's just great to watch he's found an energy from somewhere at times he's even bombing forward the Maguire that was at Leicester and the stick he's had over the years that lad he's turned it round and like no it was great yesterday and you know we know him personally as well he's a great lad and to see him with his you know Man of the Match award and go and clapping the fans at the end it's just really good to see I when that result when the full time whistle went before he got the Man of the Match award I was sat at home and I thought out of everyone there and I like Michael Carrick I'm pleased for him but I was like Harry Maguire you think about how we were at Leicester and England as well then at United the stick the abuse he's had keeps going keeps his head down and when you're with him as well outside of football such a lovely lad he's not like a big sure-boughty type of guy is he?

5:07and I just were like yes that shows all the young players coming through get your head down ignore the noise yeah character exactly

5:16Paddy McGuinness:But you know, if you look at Harry over the years, he's never really had the right partner with him. Now, if you look at him for England with John Stones, it's perfect. It's like a yin and yang. You know, you've got a ball player that comes out, but you've got a solid defender. It works. And I can't remember on top of my head anyone that he's had a partner with that has done that. He's always had a couple coming in injured. Obviously, Martinez is playing alongside him now. That might be the one that's perfect for him. You know, more of a natural footballer than a defender. And if you look at the way he's performing, I think he's setting up the team well because what we do really well now we're compact together we get against people and then we counter attack and it's what Man United football is about that is right he has shown unbelievable character from a place he was Everett Lakeview and his own fans were ridiculing him at times weren't they badly as well to fight back the way he has is unbelievable and I say he looks young again he's got a bit of energy a bit of a burst about him he's not bad at golf either which upsets me in fact last time I played with him his fucking dad beat me that's saying something but I get it it's lack of characters you look at the Arsenal team where's the character in that team how are they going to get over the line don't worry we're going to get on to Arsenal in a minute let's just stay on the United train because mood is high go on Dorgu now firstly I'd like to apologise to all the Arsenal fans because last week I took Dogu out of my FPL and I put Raya in.

6:50So I thought, that's going to be a disaster. Because as soon as I make a sub like that, it goes tits up for me. So I've took Dogu out, he's scored an absolute worldie. Do it every week. And then Raya's put three in. But let's talk about Dogu in the space of what? Has it been two or three weeks since Amarin left? It's not been that long, has it? It's a solid two games, isn't it? Yeah, but the difference... It's like Scoles has said, though.

7:22Paddy McGuinness:We've all been there when someone's not got confidence in you or you're playing out of position and you've not got confidence in yourself. It's a disaster. If you're getting an arm around the shoulder and being told you can do this, you can do that, you can do the other, and you've been put in a more advanced role, which he obviously is, there's something fundamentally wrong to be thinking why has he been playing full-back anyway? Do you know what I mean? I don't know what the recruitment is. You probably know more than me about it, but he's literally going how have you gone from a young player who's obviously lacking so much confidence playing at a massive football club with a pressure on him which is tough anyway and also looking now like he's playing out of position yeah it was Brighton as a wing back wasn't it because that was but a wing back you know that a wing back's a four-way player in it nowadays so he's a four-way I'm saying that's what he's probably what he thinks his position was I think that's where he was playing for the Italian team he came from I can't remember who it was but it's gone go back to when we were playing wide players actually help your full back and United have started doing that and probably against Saka who is their best attacker by a million miles it was like playing against two left backs at times because he was working back but he's scoring goals as well which I don't see him there as a left winger full time and Michael's obviously seen something in him that he likes because he's left Cunha out for him and Cunha left him out but then Cunha scored the other and then he's come on again and look at the problems he's caused.

8:46Paddy McGuinness:Cunha's given you an option off the bench because I do feel a bit sorry. He won't be happy with that though. No, no, no. He won't be happy with that though. Nobody's happy with that. No, no. But if you look at probably when Darren was in charge and he's looking at his benches he's got no one to come on. You've got the young lads which is okay, they're good players but when it's going bad you need some proper pros on that team that can come on the pitch and stick the chest out and go against people. Cunha's doing that so he might find himself in a bad position now Cunha thinking I'm a really good sub to bring on I carry the ball up the pitch I get the fouls I kill the clock when winning and I can score goals it's going to end up being a super sub Have you ever were you just wincing at that and I get that I think it was a football you don't want to be on the bench ever really but can you remember in year two's professional careers not just at United like throughout football did you any players who were happy with that role like you know some players who are kind of happy to be on the bench and come on and make a chance Oli Gunnar's the one that stands out yeah but was he happy with that he wouldn't have been happy but what he does he did it very well he was a bright lad wasn't he he was really bright very astute his football knowledge and studied it I never really did on the bench I really just was like just want to get on whereas he could obviously always spread it by himself he was a real student of the game and really really concentrated on the bench and then when he come on he made a change but no one wants to be on the bench he did become that though look he didn't want on the bench of course you want to start games but when you've got four brilliant centre forwards it's not ours going up and he did start his fair share of games I suppose but he became an unbelievable sub it as Nicky said because he wasn't just sat there messing about on the bench he was watching also the Kunio situation I think Mbremo's been brilliant as a nine I think he's done that job really really well he's like he's a handful he's powerful he's quick he can turn people great composure for the goal great goal and you're thinking you know Cunier might see himself on the bench for a good few weeks now but he's been brilliant oh Dager's injured yeah he'll come off didn't he because hamstring went didn't it yeah it looked like it that's always a shame when someone he scores a goal like that so you just psychology of it you're going to be top of the world and then bang you're out again for a bit I think you mentioned it before if they do get a few injuries I don't think there's a lot of back up there that's when Carrick will have to show his mettle then won't he because he's he's coming to the job really at the perfect time, hasn't he?

11:09Of the perfect all the players coming back from Africa they're just perfect for him yeah but still he's got to do the job he's got to do the business and I know it's only been two games two games two wins no I was just going to float the idea I'm a no I think

11:33Paddy McGuinness:Michael's that bright and intelligent he'll understand the job he's got and I can't ever imagine Michael going on the TV, maybe his last game if he's third or something like that, he might say it, but up until then, he knows he's got a contract at the end of the season to get the club moving forward in the right direction for the next manager. So he'll know that, Paddy, and I know Michael well, we both do. He won't be out there, he's not stupid enough to sit there and go, yeah, I want the job, because that's not what he's signed up to. He's not going to say that. I totally get that. Inwardly, he must be, thinking, I want this.

12:09Of course he is. He wouldn't. Everyone would. Just let's say, you know, highly unlikely, but let's just say he goes right to the end of the season, doesn't lose a game, right? Just saying, surely he's got to be thinking, well, you've got to give me the job. He'll be drinking that. He probably will be, but you have to realise as well, he's come into this now and it's been that bad for a year that it couldn't really get anywhere. So the pressure's not really on you while you're an interim manager. Once you take that job full-time, at the start of the season next year, let's say, all of a sudden you've got to be winning games straight away.

12:49Also, Paddy, I think before it even got to that,

12:52Paddy McGuinness:I think Man United, if they're doing their jobs right, which I'd imagine they would be at that level, I think they'll have the manager in place secretly in the next month. They'll have the right. He's got to be now. They'll have the manager in place. Yeah, but if you're sat up there, like they were all up there at the game the other day, Radcliffe and crew, you've got to be thinking, bloody hell, this lad's winning. Like, we look good and he's winning and we're behind the scenes trying to work out a 60 million quid contract for a top, top manager. They know that they can't be emotional like the club have been over the last few years with the player.

13:32Paddy McGuinness:And yeah, I think if a few scenarios as it happened over the last 18 months, he might have been in with a chance if he keeps winning. But I just think they know that the next one they've got to get, they've got to get it right. So it's different though, right? Because they will be scarred a little bit from the Oli thing. Of course, well, now look, if the Oli thing, I don't know, have happened, then it probably would be more likely. But if you think of, if Michael has got to go up, say, against Thomas Tuchel, whatever you call him, in the summer, there's only one winner if you're looking at coaches and coaching big clubs and winning big prizes.

14:03Do you know what I mean?

14:04Paddy McGuinness:so he can't really compete with that. But Michael does a good job. You know, his next job, if he wants to stay in football as a manager for another club, will be a good job. If he does well here, it will be a really good job. It could be, like a Tottenham manager. I know, really. It wouldn't surprise me. You know how, obviously, managers come into a club and they'll have all their team around them. Would someone like Carrick, let's just say Tuchel gets the job, do you think Kerry could stick around as a coach and just keep in and around he wants to just be a manager he's had three years at Middlesbrough being a manager and I don't think he's a bit like Rude wasn't it Rude didn't wait around with Amarin even though Amarin probably didn't want him I just don't think it sits right and it doesn't sit right for the new manager coming in because your new manager comes in you know a few bad games and he's on your shoulder I wouldn't have that around me let's get on to Arsenal firstly blows my mind this booing them the fans booing them four points clear obviously you know it's catchable but I mean come on what do you want fucking support Bolton for a season every other team in the league every other team in the league would want to be in their position now top of the table with four points every single team now they have it's getting a bit shaky isn't it only because of the last few years how they didn't get over the line imagine what they're going to be like in March yeah it's January I think they all need to get I think Roy said it yesterday or Nev might have said it I can't remember on TV it's like they just need to sit down on their own they don't need a manager in there they don't need a coach in there they need to sit down on their own their own environment and say lads what are we fucking doing here yeah like we are so good look around the changing room look at our squad look at the depth of our squad I mean their bench as well I think that's their biggest strength is the squad.

16:03They could probably play two teams, but I still don't think the first 11 out of them two teams is amazing. I'm not looking and thinking, wow, they're champions. I'm just not. Also as well, do you think when you get a team like Arsenal, you say the squad they've got is unbelievable, great manager, but the fact that they've never won anything with that team and their age they're at, do you think that psychologically has got a lot to do with it like you two have won leagues where you know what to do you know how to grind out results experience is valuable

16:40Paddy McGuinness:but we got it when we come into the team we was already winning we broke that back you know they already won it the 94 team already won it in 92 sorry wasn't it and then 94 and it took them a bit of time took them a bit of time but no I was look at our European journeys you know our big thing was because we come in after we started winning the league again our big thing was you've got to go if you want to be great you've got to go win the Champions League you've got to go what Busby Bay did and win Europe we failed so many times in that and it did get to you I can tell you now you went to play Juve was it Dele Alpi what was it called the stadium Dele Alpi yeah every time we went there we got beat and outplayed and then you go to Scandinavia against Gothenburg and get outplayed and you're thinking are we good enough to do this so they'll be thinking that now but they are good enough they are good enough yeah they're good enough I think they'll they'll have to win the league yeah and that's what I think if you look at right now the way the league is I think they'll win it is that just because the four points clear they've had a good lead or just because the rest of the teams aren't great I think the rest of the teams aren't great but also as well what we were talking about and we were talking about the other week and sort of having opinions about players and it seems in the modern game rightly or wrongly everyone's a little bit oversensitive so you've got a young team like Arsenal fantastic stadium looking at the Arsenal fans who were really passionate as opposed to United fans United fans aren't really ones for booing the team and booing you know even when Amrion were there when it was like rock bottom they were still behind him now if you're surely if you're an Arsenal fan even if it's not good enough that game you've got to just kind of like show a bit of support lift them up a bit you know what I mean do you know what I don't think they'll mean that yesterday it's just a reaction and the way the game ended I suppose I think it was just an instant reaction they've gone from the only thing about today I think what are we doing they've gone from getting the equaliser to going like that and when they got the equaliser you're thinking oh god you think there's only one it seems to go a little bit tits up after that well we scored I just think they're just getting emotionally involved the fans which always do whether they win the players have to just try and get themselves away from that and I do believe I remember when we was having a few bad times we never never relied on the manager or the coaches we'd sit together and you'd probably sit in the changing rooms after training for a good hour and a half or something like that two hours like frolicking fresh it out and like you know and then you'd go on again and I suggested to do that go and do that but again they might not have leaders that we had in our changing rooms I was just going to say well where did the leaders come from that team Patrick Vieira we were talking about yesterday wasn't he on TV you know if you look at their team I mean that was a proper team Vieira Petit Adams Keown Seaman yeah no all these you've got like five or six captains in one team yeah and you can imagine them lads sitting down and going lads what the fuck's going on here we're going to blow this and we're going to stop ourselves you mentioned all them characters yesterday and look at Arsenal's captain yesterday Oldergaard I love Oldergaard he's a brilliant player but surely you'd think Rice would have been captain yeah but Declan Rice I think he's quiet as well isn't he I'm not sure how much of a leader he is they've got Gabrielle at the back who looks the only one who does talk a little bit other than that I just think that's like the way the world is now in modern football everyone's just a tad more sensitive and a tad more don't like shouting there's not many Tony Adams Roy Keane, Brian Robson, Steve Bruce there's not many of them nowadays maybe the captain role might have changed and we've seen that in our time at Man United Canson and I was different never really a shouter or just showing it on the pitch Bex weren't really a massive vocal person so there is a place for it but I don't think you have to have that armband on your arm to lead do you know what I mean so some of them who maybe like the centre backs and some of them who aren't captains are going to have to lead that chain and speak up because Odegaard obviously not that kind of leader so someone's going to step in and just go you know something and we're not going to lose this fucking lead.

20:55Paddy McGuinness:We're not going to lose this league this year. It probably goes to show that players are probably brought up differently. But that's society. They're not really allowed to think for themselves. That's society in general. It's not just football. Everyone's a little bit over-cautious. You've got a building site down the road now. The apprentices are treated differently to what they was in our day on a building site or wherever, and it's just life. But they're going to have to find a way of doing it. It's funny when you say about building sites. When I used to work on building sites in summer, It was taps off, suntan.

21:27To what? What are you saying? Top off. Tops off. You said taps or tops? Taps. Taps off. Taps off? Never heard that. I can't have a look at that, have you? No, Jesus Christ. Anyhow, I would remove my T-shirts and be working away. Why did you say tops off? Taps off. Well, because taps off's a saying. I'll explain it to you after, Jesus Christ. Pause me up on the most rudimentary of things. But anyway, what I'm saying is, my point is, no, my mates who still work in that game, if I see them all and they're going to work, they've got IVIs on, this on, health and safety, arts, glasses. So you're right what you're saying.

22:08It's everything. It's not just football. Everything's now overly cautious, overly sensitive, health and safety. And I'd say 90 % of the time is a good thing, because, again, I know a lot of lads in the building game who've got like, are you all right? fingers missing and all that back's gone because there weren't enough things in place

22:26Paddy McGuinness:do you think Arteta's choices of the way he starts the games are a bit negative as well maybe he's feeling the pressure a little bit do you remember the start of the season they could only win a game by set pieces and it felt again he made the subs though didn't he he put three chuck four on yeah but that means he's put the wrong team at the start no exactly yeah and the rough Eze's got to play for me I don't care who he's replacing Eze has got to play for me if you're trying to win the league and you're playing at home and you're top at table then you've got to go and win that game I know people say there's a lot of players that need to prove this they can win the league if Arsenal win the league this could be the worst team to win the league we all have that dream trip we've been wishing we could go on but too often life or usually price gets in the way that's why Priceline is here to help you turn your dream trip into reality with up to 60 % off hotels, and up to 50 % off flights, you can book everything you need for your next adventure.

24:14It's a shout. we've only just got over the Martinez stuff Martinez I'm going to say why yeah if you were thinking I did something if you're thinking of picking a team of the season and you pick a front four the Arsenal team gets in that

24:38you look at previous champions you think Liverpool's forward's brilliant City's forward's brilliant wouldn't you? Possibly the only one Saka possibly the only one and I don't think he's been brilliant I don't think he's scored that many goals this year or assists he's possibly but the rest of them

24:57Paddy McGuinness:did you see that yesterday the top goal scorers for Arsenal the third in their list is own goals yeah no yeah in the last few weeks it was top I think in January the last four or five games if you look at their top the top scorers obviously whoever it's going to be Jesus Odegaard Saka the third and the top is on goals it was amazing yesterday did you see the stats as well on Sky Wichita did saying about the least amount of goals the top scorers scored I was surprised at that it was like 14-15 you go back to our team our manager's thinking the front four players 80 goals he's thinking 80 goals between them this is going to be a totally different way of doing it because they've still not got a centre forward a centre forward I'd heard that about Pep in the past where when they win he's like keep going don't even if you're 3-0 go 5-0 up 6-0 because them goal difference can mean it all at the end of the season do you know somebody which I didn't know about that own goals third thing but Arsenal no goals from open play in 300 minutes yeah it's mad that isn't it that's not champions is it how's that champions they probably are going to be but it's going to be a different way of doing it and because the competition has not been great has it?

26:16you never know with City though if City get the defenders back oh yeah if City can go on a run if City can go on a run now and win every game at the end of the season the big difference is City know how to do it Pep knows how to do it they don't four points is nothing we said last week seven points it's nothing again four fucking hell did say City at the beginning of the season I did say City so did I did you as well?

26:37Paddy McGuinness:yeah I did I said City I got a funny feeling for City I remember you going not a fucking chance no he was all Liverpool he was all Liverpool Another one here, Oliver Poole. That's worked, hasn't it? That's worked so well. Just goes to show that you can be a great player, but he's not always working management. I see myself as a Mourinho type of guy. Never played the game, but I could go in and manage someone. Fucking angry ginge. I'm like, step aside, son. I'll show you how to win these games. You're talking about me there, or actual angry ginge? No, no, you're not actual angry ginge. do you remember a game when you were playing and again we know how good the United fans when it comes to getting behind the team but do you remember ever playing in a game where you thought feeling a bit negative Ian they booed a little bit there was never so much been was there I think maybe United fans are brilliant like we said before when you talk about Marriott it's hard to get sacked because the support and they're pretty much the same with the players I think when you're going through a spell where you're not playing that well there's a few groans but I can't really think of players that got booed, can you?

27:40No, I can't remember any. Not for Man United, no. They'll just be groans when you know if you make a mistake.

27:45Paddy McGuinness:They'll have a saying on the social media or the internet or whatever it was, radio stations back then, but they never really abused you during a game. It just wasn't the thing to do. I want to talk about this current Arsenal team. Would they have beaten the United team of 2008 if they couldn't beat the United team? No. not a chance no chance that's like saying that would Man United's team now beat the Invincibles it's never going to happen Bolton beat you do you remember our 2008 team though the forward players Tevez Ronaldo Rune please don't mention Tevez around me I love Tevez great player why why?

28:27fucking hell you saw last soccer he only scored four passes in three minutes yeah there's no way there's no way they would live with that team they wouldn't live with that team At the other end of it, Ferdinand, Vidic, Neville, Everett against Van der Sar. He did never score. It's proper, wasn't he? He did never score when he scored 10. Bolton did, though. Beat you 1-0 in Elke. But let's talk about that. What, that year? Yeah. Going on to Liverpool, because something I didn't know when we're talking about Gehi signing for City, which is a great signing. I remember at the time, there was talk about him signing for Liverpool.

29:08But it says here, Gay revealed this week that he completed a medical at Liverpool on deadline day before Crystal Palace pulled out of the deal. Now, that is touch-tight for signing. And I think if you're Steve Parrish, knowing hindsight's a great thing, but like Glasner's going, you lose these players. as Mateta looks like he's on his way out, surely you're thinking, I should have sold him. 15 million quid, I think it was at the time. Plus wages. Yeah. I mean... What's 15 million quid, do you say? So it's not a lot to do. It might be a lot to Crystal Palace. Yeah, it might be a lot to Palace, but...

29:52I would have thought then things happen all the time. There would have been a condition, I would have thought we might get, right, you can go for your medical as long as we get somebody in. Yeah. So Crystal Palace were probably hopeful of getting a defender in that day. Right. Sometimes it doesn't happen. Sometimes they can't agree a deal. Sometimes there's something wrong with his medical. That close? Yeah, that close. Yeah, of course it will. So they've obviously realised, no, we've got no one to replace him. We can't do it. We can't afford to do it. It's massive business football now. Like you say, it's not even billion pounds.

30:20It's trillions in it. And I think when I hear stuff like that, even nowhere, it's like literally deadline day. He's at Liverpool. He's having a medical and it doesn't happen because of what you were just saying, like it could be another player's not coming. It's like, how does it get like that? I don't know how I'd feel if it was a player. I think if it could have a great move to Liverpool, and would have a chance, it would have looked like, probably not transpired like that, but he would have helped him in a big way.

30:46Paddy McGuinness:It was really bad then, though, going there and then going back to your club for another year. You'd feel like, I'd be thinking if teammates don't think they're good enough for me, and it'd be really weird. Oh, he handled himself unbelievably well, though, didn't he? Fantastic. He never mulled that. I rate him. Who else was he who did it? Isak. You think of Isak leading Newcastle the way he left Newcastle. Yeah, totally wrong way to do it. What Gahey did was unbelievable. I think Gahey as well, that again, just as a football fan, I look at him as a player and his character and how he conducts himself.

31:16And I think if I'm a young kid, again, another good role model of how to handle a situation and as well, look what's happened. Exactly. Got a great move. He's at City, one of the best managers in the world, fantastic team you go there you are that's what you get well he's handled himself brilliantly and he's got a reward for it hasn't he for doing it the right way whereas Isak he kicked off and still got his move now look what's happened I'm not saying do you know what I mean God's always watching isn't he no you know about Robbie Fowler because we're talking about Liverpool this again blew my mind when you think you know a little bit I didn't know this Liverpool Liverpool have only won five of the last 18 league matches.

32:05Yeah, I've seen that. But they were saying as well, the last 13, 14 games, they're on a great run, a load of draws in there. Look, whatever slot has done last year, once Xabi Alonso got sacked from Real Madrid, that's just hanging right over him whenever there's a bad result, whenever there's a bad few results. And you've also got Gerrard in the background. Gerrard in the background. He's got a job. just going back to Gehi as well signing for City and this thing about him being at Liverpool having a medical on deadline day when you two were playing did you ever have a player that close come into your club very famous one

32:43Paddy McGuinness:yeah Ronaldinho Ronaldinho yeah you know he did yeah I remember we was what season you don't you don't really know that much about what player you're interested in so you see it on TV yeah you hear about it and then on the plane oh we was going to on precinct so to America and we had to we had to refuel something like that yeah Mike Dallas or Seattle somewhere like that we had to refuel I always remember it Goose Bay it was called Goose Bay right so I think the manager came to speak to a few of us which is very rare he was excited wasn't he he was excited he never got like that I never seen him like I was signing a player no I think we've got Ronaldinho done sorry what year were this I don't know was it 2003 2004 before Bex went to Madrid so where would Ronaldinho have been then?

33:29I think he was at PSG and he looked an unbelievable player so yeah we took off

33:34Paddy McGuinness:and he's talking to us and then we took off and back then there was no wifi on your phone so now you can get wifi you're in no man's land for 7-8 hours his agent was his brother as well so he just kept saying brother I think we're done and I remember so you're on your way to America you train a few times then you have your first game and even then he still thought it was done because he's in the dressing room so I think I'll give him number seven when I give him the number seven shirt so it was like honestly it was that close we were excited because it was amazing telling and I actually think I don't know if it was that tour but we were playing against Barcelona he chose Barcelona and played his first game I think was against us I think it might have been the year after possibly yeah God the things you hear on here and we're all thinking I'm going to fucking do him I'm going to do him I'm going to do him but you couldn't get near him the rest of that Barcelona team is unbelievable I'm just putting it out there I can feel people typing the comments already before I say this I think a lot of people know that anyway do you think Ronaldinho would have worked in that squad absolutely it would have been unbelievable he would have been amazing in the Premier League yeah would have been amazing I think it would have been at Barnsley no at yeah it would have been amazing I mean you see where he was brought up yeah see where he played football at least the sunshine was out then hey listen he's one of the greatest players ever by the way before everyone starts piling up he'd have been incredible he is and do you know what people probably talk about his character and would your manager be able to handle him that's what I'm saying about his whole life I think what our manager would have handled him Yeah, but we had York, as Nicky said before.

35:23York, he was the biggest party ledger, see? But as long as he's doing it on a perch, the manager will handle him.

35:27Paddy McGuinness:I think he would have come in and been blown it away. Premier League Player of the Year for two years, maybe three years, and then I think he could have gone. I think they'd have been in and out pretty quick. But I think that the three years or two years or whatever it was we had with him would have been phenomenal for the Premier League. Did you get to the bottom of why he never signed? Charles Barcelona. He went to the... As simple as that. He obviously went there, seeing the beaches, obviously where he's from. I like it windy in Manchester. Thomas Frank on the brink. Last week they had the 2-1 win over Borussia Dortmund, so you're thinking, great result.

36:02Then they do a 2-2 draw against Burnley. Currently 14th. Only eight points clear relegation. And another thing, when I was coming in and I was looking at the league, I can't believe if Leeds win... You've done a lot on your way into that, haven't you? Oh, I'm all over it. You know what it is? I'd had a sprout shot this morning. I'd had a sprout shot this morning. The brain's switched on. If Leeds win, they're above... They're above... Or they're level with points with third, but they might go above on goal difference or something. But that's like... It's mad league this year. It's mad, isn't it?

36:40Tottenham is just a basket case of a football club, isn't it? You don't know what you're going to get.

36:44Paddy McGuinness:You look at that football club, the fundamentals of that football club is brilliant. It's unbelievable. and the ground everything about it the training ground the ground you look at it it's all in place to go and be successful but they just can't get the right I think they let the right one go too soon the Pacino go Thomas Frank actually felt like the right man for the job it did to me it just felt like a perfect what he did at Brentford and again there's different pressures as well from Brentford to Tottenham well if you look at the same amount of games Frank played at Brentford as opposed to Spurs similar sort of record didn't do that great at Brentford but again I should imagine at Brentford there's not a massive spotlight on you so you've got that time to mistakes develop you feel awkward with any Tottenham manager that one result away from complete disaster it feels like he's at that point now look and I feel a bit sorry for him because he's got his main players are missing they've been missing for a long time Jamie Madison Kulisunska Solanke did not really have a forward line where you'd think they could be dangerous them three are really good players and I quite like the rest of the team midfield possibly Connor Gallagher's coming I love the centre-halves me Van der Veen and Romero I think they should be playing it he's in my team I think they should be playing it if them two centre-halves were at Man United I'd come up my night would you Firstly it just popped into my head do you think Spurs fans would have Ange back now to swap for Frank no I don't think so I don't think so right okay then fair enough right no I just thought I'd ask it while we're here why not it's a volatile football club isn't it yeah they've had volatile managers that hasn't quite worked and what do you expect from Tottenham what would I expect a top six and maybe win a cup one thing Gange did he won them a big trophy that's what I'm saying he did sacrifice the league to do it as well really when you've been at other clubs outside of United do you always know or is there a vibe in the dressing room when you know the manager's going to be sacked does it change with the manager does his chat with you change because he knows he's on his way out you've had to sack a manager haven't you I've had to sack a manager at Newcastle yeah it's not nice but yeah you see it coming and as a player at Newcastle I didn't see the Sir Bobby one coming but he was only there four weeks I signed and then he went four weeks later it was a disaster but then the next one has come along and you can feel a tension and you just know this is the big game.

39:20Paddy McGuinness:This is the one game that is going to make or break the manager and it's not a nice feeling because you're responsible for that as well. You know, you're part of that, big part of that reason why the manager's going to be going. Now, the manager might be doing certain things wrong. You know, training ground might be wrong. The chats to the players might be wrong. But ultimately, you want to cross that white line. You're the ones that are responsible for playing and performing and we didn't do that as much as we should have done in Newcastle. I didn't either. certainly I didn't but when you see a manager getting sats and I think I was involved in about four or five no it's about six or seven actually at Newcastle could you feel it coming you could feel it coming yeah and you could feel a tension in the manager and I never had that all my career what you mean a bit snappy a bit short temper you could just see him like you know sometimes he's just down and it's emotion some people get angry some people get sad I had some brilliant managers at Newcastle Kevin Keegan you know Sam Allardyce Graham Soonest It's all big characters that have been there, seen it and done it.

40:17Is there anyone you thought, like you're trying to lean up to the game and thinking, I'm not sure he should be doing this job? Yeah, there's a few, yeah.

40:24Paddy McGuinness:Yeah, there's a few of them well out of depth and you're thinking, how have you got in this job? Name names, it's not nice, but Joe Kinnear, he come into the football club and he hadn't watched a lot, he actually said, lads have not watched a live game, not on TV, have not been at a stadium for 10 years. Jesus. Now that is a big, big things of someone to say he didn't know any of the players names he knew Alan Shearer was mine and maybe one or two others didn't know any but the ball was still round now when you look at a big football club who did he come to get the job then? because it was the Mike Caster scenario wasn't it?

40:59Paddy McGuinness:it was Mike Caster Lee he came in it was obviously Dennis Wise I was going to say he was involved as well it was a bit of a you know friends, mates, jobs football you can see why the Newcastle fans were straight on to that yeah you're looking at Newcastle and I had a great time at Newcastle we got relegated that obviously wasn't great but in general great people good fans proper football club and you've got some a manager coming who's not been involved in football for 10 years how long were Jokaneer there then? about I don't know long was it? 8 weeks was that it? he had a heart attack he had a heart attack I was there but Paul got ill and he was a great fella I really liked him but you're just looking thinking how's this happening?

41:38Paddy McGuinness:how's this happening? you know it's fucking madness you've got all the people you can choose from and you choose someone who by his own admission fell out a love of football and didn't even watch any football live watched it on TV like we do or didn't go to any games didn't study the football didn't study it football moves on you said a minute ago football moves on in 10 years you hadn't been to a live game for 10 years but going off track a little bit it would be a totally different game oh a totally different game he'd have been around that Wimbledon team where the fucking amount of certain each of his clothes on fire and then you go to Newcastle and you've got five or six French lads who don't really speak that much English.

42:15Paddy McGuinness:You've got two South American players and you've got the English contingent. Then you've got the younger ones who are coming up. I mean, it was mind-blowing. But you see it coming, you see the guy, no matter whether you like them or not and you see it, some people might go, I'm glad you got, I was never glad any of the managers got sats. Because you look at them and you think, you then see that they're human beings. Of course. I remember seeing Van Gaal get sats at Man United. Now, Van Gaal's a beast of a man. Yeah. Like, big fella. 44:36Paddy McGuinness:Well it's difficult Because at the time It was Neil Wood Who had a close Relationship anyway You brought him To the club We brought him To the club With the Upman United At the time He was a 13 coach Really good How long was he At Salford then By now A year and a half 18 months Right okay But he was a really Really good coach On the grass Top top top top But in that league It's a gamble With who you get Because you've either Got to go for It's very rare You get both You've got to go For the coach Who's on the grass And who's not quite Experienced enough To manage Or you go the way around who's a manager who doesn't really do much coaching and it's always a gamble and when you bring a manager in from an academy who's not managed men before, it's a gamble but we all decided to do it and we brought him in, started off really well, you're watching the football you're going wow this is unbelievable but then it got to a point where we went on a horrendous run didn't we, remember it was like 12 games without even a draw or a win and it's coming in, it's coming in, it's coming in but so we sat him down, I think I was with Ryan at the time.

45:33Paddy McGuinness:Sorry, when does the first conversation start amongst the owners? Oh, six weeks earlier. No, I mean, with a run of games we've not even drawn, is it after five games, six games, will you start having them tentative conversations? I don't think you can put a marker down on the amount of games. It's just like, how's the feeling in the football club? What are the players like? Have they lost the players? What are they playing like on a pitch? Are we looking to try and win a game? Or are we just cards down? Yeah. jacked it so yeah I don't remember the actual point of us talking but we talked we were close anyway we would speak every other day on the phone and even more so them and we was all in the club but yeah anyway it was like it was discussion time it was like the next game come along you got beat we've got to win the next game and then you've got to do what's right by the football club and what was right by the football club is getting somebody we got to a point we nearly got we were worried about relegation remember and don't forget we had Singapore sat at the top of us so Peter Lim was sat above us and he's having his saying it as well bring him in and we give him a phone call on the night before come in the training ground at 7 o 'clock by that phone call you know what's happening 7 in the morning yeah you're not coming in at 7 in the morning so have a chat about the next game you know you can leave that till 9 who made that phone call me and could you tell by his voice he went oh alright but Wood in all fairness to him he knew after it happened he actually said he'd probably give me a bit too long because he knew did I think if if managers got common sense about it, they realise what's coming.

47:06Do you know what I mean? And there's a lot that builds up to you. You were talking before about development and results. But when we're there and we see every single day, you see certain things, certain decisions, or certain players who might play out of position, and that all accumulates into the bad results, which is why eventually you have to get rid of them. So you're sat down in the office. He comes in.

47:26Paddy McGuinness:I'm down like this, three of us, and I said, Woody, it's got to come to that time now and it's not a nice one. I think you've been brilliant for us. and you know it's more harder because of my relationship with you I've known you for 8-9 years coaching I think you're a great coach I still think he's a good coach I still think he's got a big career in football but it's not going to happen we can't afford it and he was fine absolutely fine I mean you can't sit there but even if I didn't have a relationship with him he still can't sit there and argue the point we're sitting in three points off relegation we had the highest budget our second or third highest budget at the time in the league it is what it is it's like you say Gary I was regrets it we actually sacked a manager we were second in the league once we didn't Gary did Gary says that was his get us one on him Neb he's fucking raw Gary always admits that was his biggest mistake I think to be fair to Neb he paid him apart of his own pocket we actually sacked managers they all can't get promoted on the teams I think Rick Wellings as well didn't quite work out for us do you know what you were saying about that first manager second then you're sacked one second league I was just going to say because that's when if you're a manager then like Van Gaal and like Pochettino and like Ange where you've won Summit or you're in a final then when you get sacked you've got to be a manager then going fucking hell what more do you want yeah you have to remember the levels are so different as well because we talk about Van Gaal and Mourinho and them types getting sacked it doesn't affect their life because they're getting like 9, 10 million quid do you know what I mean when we're doing it Woody might have been getting 30, 40 grand do you know what I mean it's just totally different did Mourinho say that that he's second place at Man United one of his biggest achievements yeah yeah he did did he?

49:15Paddy McGuinness:second place at Man United with his squad he had and the funds that he had I don't know how true it is you only take his word for it was it's one of his biggest achievements and he's won everything wow that's some statement that isn't it just as we're getting to the end there's a few little things I want to do a bit of fun we've had no food and drink questions have we? not for a while by the way I need to bring some sprout juice we're bringing them in we have enough of that we have enough shot of sprout juice no shall we just say Scolzy what it was we got stuff sent in sprout juice Scolzy and then we had a shot didn't we so basically before we started the pod Scolsey come in with a bag there was some treats in it and we thought here we go this is lovely it's not like him as well because he's fucking tight than cramped most of the times still waiting for a Christmas card off these two anyhow I thought oh what's he got here we go this will be the cutting edge kind of the best this is like Luca's head on crack and he's pulled out a lot of pops of sprout juice and trust me it's as bad as it sounds I never knew it existed though so it's good that it doesn't I actually thought it was very nice so no I think it wasn't very nice it was alright see when I have it it's like hot it's warm it's nice you put your hand around it it's winter it's like a bit of salt and pepper in it it's called Bovril that not fucking sprout and then you get one of these little shots it doesn't smell great it's cold it's cold it's cold as well yeah cold thanks for them shots whoever's I'll tell you something whoever owns that company has got the hardest sales job ever because if I'm in a health shop and I'm going ah Echinacea Oh there's a bit of Ylang Ylang What's that?

Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt and Paddy McGuinness react to Manchester United’s comeback win over Arsenal at the Emirates, breaking down what it says about the team’s mentality and momentum. There’s praise for Harry Maguire, with Scholesy and Nicky explaining why his recent performances have made a real difference and why it’s good to finally see him getting his plaudits. They discuss how Dorgu helped Luke Shaw handle Bukayo Saka, why Matheus Cunha’s impact off the bench has been so important for Michael Carrick, and whether Carrick himself should be in the frame for the permanent job. Scholesy explains why he thinks it’s too soon, while Nicky suggests when United might identify their next manager.

Attention then turns to Arsenal, with the lads giving their take on the Emirates crowd turning on their own players, whether Mikel Arteta is too cautious at home, and Scholesy floating the theory that Arsenal may have an excellent squad but not a great starting eleven. He even asks whether they could be the worst team ever to win the Premier League?

A chat about Marc Guehi’s failed move to Liverpool spirals into a story about just how close Ronaldinho came to joining Manchester United in 2003, including the squad number he would’ve worn. There’s also a look at what’s gone wrong at Liverpool this season, and whether Thomas Frank deserves sympathy for his situation at Tottenham. Nicky recalls Joe Kinnear’s spell in charge at Newcastle, despite him not having attended a football match for 10 years, and opens up about his own experience of having to sack a manager at Salford.

To finish, things get a bit tense in the studio as a debate about their five favourite sports to play and five favourites to watch quickly descends into anarchy, while Scholesy brings in some sprout juice for a taste test that goes about as well as you’d expect.
