In short
Football talk focused on Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze’s brilliance, Arsenal’s title push, and Liverpool’s “crisis” after a poor start, plus broader debate about what makes great squads and how new signings disrupt team dynamics.
Guests
Paul Scholes (former Manchester United midfielder; Premier League/FA Cup winner; discusses player mentality, squad chemistry, and examples from his career) and Nicky Butt (former Manchester United midfielder; talks about scoring/hat-tricks, squad culture, and adapting foreign players).
Key claims
Eze is a humble, “decent bloke” whose space and finishing are driving Spurs’ problems; Arsenal look “flawless” and young/hungry, and beating Tottenham is a confidence boost that could swing the title race. Liverpool’s issues stem from underperformance and lack of leadership/settled midfield, with Slot struggling to build a cohesive squad after disruptive transfers.
Notable examples
Eze’s hat-trick vs Spurs (first in decades, referenced as 1978/Alan Sunderland). Scholes/Butt compare hat-trick mentality and discuss worldies/crossbar techniques. Liverpool’s slump after winning the league, including talk of players being dropped despite early form (e.g., Isak). Scholes and Butt also cite how they integrated foreign players at United/Newcastle (e.g., Varane, Forlan) and how squad familiarity matters.

It can help you with practically anything on the web, like restoring a vintage motorcycle from a 50-page restoration block, or finally break down that long article you've had open for weeks. Gemini and Chrome is here for it. Ready to make anything online make sense? There's no place like Chrome. Check responses set up required, compatibility and availability varies 18+. They say you can tell a lot about a person by the contents of their freezer. So, what does a bottle Jägermeister say?
0:32It says you have standards. You don't cut corners. And you like your Jägermeister shots the way they're meant to be enjoyed. Ice cold. As for the frozen taquitos and mystery leftovers, we'll keep that between us. Drink it cold, or don't drink it at all. Jägermeister. Damn, that's cold. Drink responsibly. Jägermeister liqueur, 35 % alcohol by volume. Imported by Masked Jägermeister, U.S. White Plains, New York. Are all batteries the same? That's like asking if all soccer players are the same. Take Messi, the most decorated player ever. Is there any other player who has achieved that? No, just him.
1:11Now take Duracell. Is there any other battery with power boost ingredients inside? No, just Duracell. Goats only trust Goats, because they're built different. And Messi only trusts Duracell.
1:25Paddy McGuinness:This is God's honest truth and he had a 7 or 8 out of 10 player every week. week, who was a great lad and you add your back. I'd rather have him than someone who's a superstar who's 9-10 out of 10 every week, but a complete dick. The great players come back year after year after year and do it all the time. They don't just turn up for a season and turn it on for a while. That looks like what Liverpool are doing now. There was a meeting with myself, Skolze, Ryan and Ed Woodward and it was like, who would you get? Welcome to the good, the bad and the football. The Premier League's back with a bang.
1:58What a weekend. But before we get into it, lads, I heard something the other day. I love these little chats before we get going. This will be good. Come on. Two things I heard, right, over the weekend. A dentist was telling me, right, when you brush your teeth and you spit your toothpaste out, don't rinse your mouth out. You're not supposed to. I know that. Why? What? Fluoride.
2:23Paddy McGuinness:You knew that? Did you know that? You took all the fluoride. That's why your two teeth are shit, I'm not all right. No. I rinse two teeths. Thank God our English is better. Fucking hell. You've got all gunk and claggy mouth. You know what else you're not supposed to do? Do a mouthwash after you brush your teeth. Always do a mouthwash before you brush your teeth because that rinses the fluorine off as well. I tell you what. Go on. I didn't know that. No, I didn't. You brush your teeth and spit it out. Do you rinse with water? Always, yeah. I do. A little mouthful of water. Feels better. A little swim.
2:57Not supposed to do that. second thing I learned you're not supposed to squeeze your tea bag in your cup if you're making a brew so I was speaking to a master tea blender press it against the side with your spoon which we all do I was talking to a master tea blender he come you know if you get like a PG tips right he tastes every day all the tea comes in from all over the world every day he mixes it, tastes it and then says that's the exact right blend, which is why you get the same flavours and they send it off and make it every single day. And I said, right, well, what's the perfect cup of tea?
3:35He went, bag, cup, not boiling water, boiled water. So it's hot, but not boiling. Pour it in 60 seconds. Wait a minute, what's the difference between boiling water and boiled water? Well, it's fucking boiling, isn't it? If it's boiling. It's like, it's been let's go. It's boiling, it's boiling.
3:53Paddy McGuinness:If it's not boiling, it's boiled. Sorry, when you boil your kettle and it clicks off, leave it for 10. You know what, You get a pizza out of the oven and it burns the roof of your mouth, but if you leave it a bit, it cools down. You've got to have a hot brew, though, haven't you? It's got to be hot. Oh, it's hot. It's hot. Someone's fucking winding you up here, Paddy. 60 seconds, and then you pull the bag out like that, little tap, don't squeeze it, and then you milk. Yeah, but what if you like it strong? No, he said the strength is you're just leaving it. He said you squeeze it, that's bitter.
4:20So he said you'll get, like, a bitter taste. He said if you just pull it out, I'll know. Paddy's had a good weekend. I tell you what I have got to get myself a girlfriend I've got to get a girlfriend figure it out here we go oh oh Arsenal here we go now Arsenal six points clear Liverpool and City both lost no team has ever had I never knew this six point cushion at this point and not gone on to win the league I was really surprised because it's so early in the season it's only 12 games gone why is it third yeah nearly a bit less than a third yeah a bit less than a third I was really surprised about they look good don't they they look like they're going to win it I think I've been saying quite a bit about
5:05Paddy McGuinness:City going to come back City going to come back which I still think they will I still think there'll be a challenge between they won't run away with it I don't think Arsenal but watching them yesterday it was like wow they look flawless don't they although I do think Tottenham are crap Tottenham are crap Tottenham are crap just talking to Spurs because everyone was saying how bad they were but if you look back to last season they weren't sparkling then so it's not as though they've gone worse where did they finish last season 15th, 16th or something like that they were 4th or 5th from bottom weren't they I think to be fair to Ange I think he put all his eggs in one basket didn't they want to win a bit of silverware because they knew he weren't going to get anywhere he obviously hoped that he wouldn't get relegated and put all his eggs into that one basket to win that silverware which he hadn't done for a while but yeah yesterday I thought they were awful really bad but you always say when we was playing you can only win what's put in front of you and Arsenal were flawless they tried to match and they played three centre-halves thinking set-pieces but it just didn't it didn't suit them and they're missing the two best players you think of Kulisovsky and Madison nobody else can create for them they can't create a chance and looking at Eze I mean he had again even after his first goal and you're thinking right Spurs are sorted out at the back no more they just didn't seem to he just kept He just had space and he just did what he wanted.
6:24But as certain players, I think everyone likes him and Eze is one of them for me. He just seems a decent bloke, scores an at-trick against Spurs, which I think they were saying on the telly, it's not been done for like 40 years or something like that. 1978, they said, didn't they? Is that what it was? Who was it? Alan Sunderland. Alan Sunderland. I don't remember him. He's called his own work.
6:55I knew it had been a while back but I kind of like I were really pleased for him I were really pleased for it just a nice person yeah there's nothing cocky about it no it's just a good one
7:09Paddy McGuinness:says a great lad don't they're really humble really nice nice ladder they look like a real superstar in the making didn't yeah I mean it took a while for him to get going there but I I think the talents there, people talk about him. I didn't know him much before as a younger player, but I spoke this morning to a few people, and they're saying he went on loan all over the show. And I think, was it QPR that got him into the club? It was Les Ferdinand, wasn't it? But looking at him yesterday, you look and going, he looks like he's that humble. He maybe doesn't want to be a superstar. I think a few people at school do is like that.
7:41Paddy McGuinness:You're that humble that sometimes you don't want to be the spotlight on you all the time. And he probably is one of them. and now he's realised, hopefully I think he will do, after scoring the hat to yesterday, he's going to be a superstar. It was probably the one thing that's been missing from his game, if you think about the goals. We talk about great midfield players, number 10s, is he a number 10? He's probably a number 10 into more of a forward player. But when he's at a club like Arsenal, he has to start winning games for them. We saw Frank Lampard do it for years for Chelsea. Them goals, they win your games, they win your big points and yesterday was, what has he scored?
8:16four in ten games or something for Arsenal that's the only thing he needs to add if he can do that more consistently he's a£100 million player
8:24Paddy McGuinness:got the leash from Arsenal didn't he yeah he was nearly signing for Tottenham or something didn't he did they say he rang our title or something there was something the deal were close because everyone at the time were calling out Daniel Levy and saying it was his fault but who knows who fault it was and who knows what was behind it but I think if your family are massive Arsenal fans and you're an Arsenal fan and you secretly want to play for them, you can see something like that. I don't think it was secretly, was I? I think if you're a serious footballer at the minute and you want to win things and you've got them two clubs coming at you, you're the only one club you're going to.
9:00Paddy McGuinness:So I think everyone's done the same. All day long. Arsenal look like a man's team. Team of men were in the past. You probably thought they were a little bit soft. Do you know something though? The way this season's going, we might be sat in here three weeks at a time going, City are coming back in here. because they can do anything to what they do they can screw up it's nothing I do I still think but you know they've got to stop giving silly goals away City and silly results away and it'd be obviously one or the other you think of the players Arsenal have got missing as well yesterday still still no second forward Oldergaard as well he might not get back in current state of play if Eze carries on he won't but I like Oldergaard as well I think Oldergaard is brilliant football Saka as well Saka yesterday was brilliant it's good problems to offer Arteta if you're a manager in that position.
9:46Paddy McGuinness:Do you know as well, they're all young. They're all young and hungry and they've not won it before and you can see them now. I think that yesterday's a bigger result than most people will think. Not great because you expect them to beat Tottenham, but Eze straight away is going to get confidence and go sky high. And obviously what happened to City the day before getting beat, they will really think now, they'll be going in training today and they'll be thinking, we can win this league. I don't think they thought that two or three weeks ago. I think they still need to prove that they can beat a big team.
10:16They've still not done it, have they? I don't think they have. Liverpool, City this year, they've got Chelsea on Sunday, which is... That's a big one. They still need that statement when I think of a team's around the way saying, right, so if they've got Chelsea on Sunday and win, they'll be difficult to stop. Yeah, that is the one, that is the goal, it's down then. Just going back to Eze and just looking at his hat-trick, I know both of you, you've scored a couple of hat-tricks, haven't you? You've had a brace in a game. No, no, I'm just saying... We're in my game, I was defending. I've just said you've had a brace, it's fantastic.
10:52But when you've scored two and you're on the pitch, how much is it in your head where you're going, I want that hat-trick? I think it probably would be for centre-fold. I was going to say that. I was a midfield player.
11:06Paddy McGuinness:If you're an out-and-out number nine, that's what you're obsessed with, like a Rude or a Shearer or whatever. Coley or something like that. that is rarely I didn't do it like I said but for me if I ever scored two which was very rare Was that Leicester? A few more Paddy you only seen Leicester I was just saying Did you score two a few times? A few times yeah Not a lot but a few times but literally if you score two I didn't always think I'm going to get an act it was just very much like I've just scored a couple of goals it wasn't great but you scored a lot more than me you better turn this that way for this question I was a little bit lucky one of mine was West Ham and I'd scored two and we got a penalty but I wasn't a penalty taker but I think the lad's just go on what was the one do you score it that's the only penalty you ever scored that wasn't it no no I was going to say when you're on your when you're on your at-trick against Newcastle it says you're 5-1 up you won a penalty Van Nistelrooy 2-0 but how tempted were you to go do you know what I'll say I'll have 4 no I knew you're not that kind of I sent a number 9 mentality to that not a midfielder I actually don't like it when you scored 2 when you take the penalty limit unless I think the West Ham game I think it's like six or seven at a time anyway so we'd absolutely battle them I think if it's like two or three, one you'd think nope you're going to be a penalty taker it should do all the time in my opinion if you've had five penalties the penalty taker should take it that's why the penalty taker is the best at it at that moment in time so yeah Did you not want me to score after it?
12:32Paddy McGuinness:No I definitely want you to score after it we were still betting on the amount of goals I was way before we were still betting oh hang on me and you together yeah yeah at the beginning of the season when we was kids when we was younger I mean like because you used to score loads of goals yeah it was like school boys in like 16, 17 yeah lovely 18 and then when I got my shackles put on can I just say there's a part I just want to make there Nicky just said school boys and I went yeah lovely that can be clipped up wrong just want to make that one clear yeah lovely but I realised when I got my shackles put on with that he was well ahead of me of scoring goals but we had a privilege 50 could be it was a bet for a season didn't we when it's his youth team I tell you what the youth team he's never played me by the way he's probably promised it I'm not having that how many seasons I don't like that 15 seasons I can't afford to play you now that long ago someone I want to talk about and it's no real effect on that Arsenal Tottenham game but Rick Olsen when I was saying about Eze as a player where you're going oh I really like him there's something about Rick Olsen work because he doesn't really smile much and he always has one of them resting bitch faces do you know what I mean that goal he scored some goal I mean no one really talked I was sat at home going what a goal great goal wasn't it he must be devastated he scored that that time if he'd have scored that in the first half it's like it'd be all over the news now but it was an amazing goal what score did it make it that 3-1 3-1 wasn't it and then he scored straight away quick though didn't he he scored quick Some finish.
14:11Have you ever been in a game where you've scored an absolute worldie but your team's not winning so you feel as though you can't celebrate it the same? Because it must be a lovely feeling scoring a goal like that. There's no better feeling than scoring any goal. I don't know what Nicky thinks about it, but scoring any goal, it's like you're lucky enough to score after it, but score one goal in a game for United at Old Trafford. It's unbelievable, isn't it? Just jogging back to it. There's no feeling like it. Trust me. And that kind of goal as well. what's bonkers is literally who's the lad Scotland who scored yeah well he's we're a bit further back I think Kenny McLean Kenny McLean yeah you've got two of them at the space of two days like that we played when Bex did it was you playing when Bex did it
14:52Paddy McGuinness:yeah he tried about three times before didn't he but he used to do that as a kid I remember him doing one at Littleton Road yeah funnily enough under a B team would have been 16-17 16-17 to ping mum from he was always doing it because he had that technique yeah it's a hard skill I'm telling you, people think that pro footballers can go, professional footballers can go and clip that in there really easy. We do it messing about, don't you, in training. Jump really, didn't you? Pull your hamstring and stuff. But you should try and... I'm telling you, it's not as easy as it looks, that actually. On the full without bouncing, it's a trough.
15:22Paddy McGuinness:The thing is, though, you've got to get the trajectory around you. Yeah. If it obviously goes too high, you're giving the keeper loads of time to get back. You've just got to get it perfect. He did yesterday, really, didn't he? And like Bex said, Alonso did it against Newcastle. Alonso's done it a couple of times I think Charlie Adam did it at Chelsea Do you know immediately when it leaves your boot that feeling you go that's in I don't know I've never done it Have you known when you've been messing about in training Yeah When you click one We used to do the only thing we used to do was a crossbar challenge so you do it you start at the edge of the box and you go all the way back and you know straight away when you've hit one you know it's hitting the crossbar but honestly within about 0.1 second when you've hit it you know it's going to hit the crossbar or not don't you Yeah It's funny isn't it like when you're talking about how difficult a skill that is and when you watch it on telly, it kind of like, not that it looks easy, but it doesn't look as long.
16:14But even like when I've been at the halfway line just with my mates and we've tried to hit the crossbar from the, when I kick it, I mean, it hits the ground. It's a long way. You're like,
16:25Paddy McGuinness:Jesus, that is a long way, isn't it? Long way. Especially when you've got the weather as well and windy and a bit of, it's really tough. But like you say, the finish he scored the lad yesterday was a really good finish and it didn't seem like like looking at it back I've not watched it on the replays watching it live he didn't look like he had loads of back left on it either like he was sort of running he just sort of went instinctive but to be fair I think he's better when he's instinctive when he has to think about it or something he doesn't look great does he but it wasn't that far out the one yesterday was it Ken McClellan was in his own half wasn't it Charlie Adams or David Beckham was in his own half it wasn't it was piece of piece Yeah, it wasn't the hardest thing in the world to do.
17:05When you're watching stuff like that and you see players like him do that and then next three or four games he's having an absolute murder, he's on the bench. How does that work? What is it with a player where they only seem to just turn it on on the odd game? Inconsistency, yeah. That separates the big ones, the best ones,
17:25Paddy McGuinness:from the average ones, I think. But going back to the strike, I think the hardest thing they want to do, I remember Yorkie scored a goal against Chelsea and the ball chipped him outside of his foot but the ball was moving away from Yorkie so that's a much harder skill than the ball that stood still or coming towards you. The ball's coming towards you, it's easy to clip something. If it's stood still, it's a little bit less easy but when the ball's moving away from you, running away from you to clip someone over there, that's a really tough skill to have. I think that's a good point, I'll put it.
17:54That's what separates, as Nicky said, the good players from the great players. Yeah. We think, probably talk about Liverpool last year, everyone's saying how great they are but we're looking now thinking how did that great? The great players come back year after year after year and do it all the time they don't just turn up for a season and turn it on for a while and that looks like what Liverpool are doing now Everyone's had an opinion on Liverpool and it's been especially after the game the other day losing 3-0 but those players who won the league last season regardless of the new signings in my eyes those players are still there so if one or two players are having an off game and what have you but pretty much two thirds of that squad is the same squad forget about the players they've sat in the players who are there from last year are just not performing they climbed the mountain last year and there's always a determination about you when you haven't won it for a few years which I think they like they were like but you've got to come back and do that year after year that's what separates the great players United did it for years Man City have been doing it for years now everyone's at the time I say Mo Salah's the greatest player the Premier League's ever seen now no he isn't
19:15Paddy McGuinness:do you know what I mean I can't put my finger on it Reeve because if you look at Mo Salah and Van Dijk they're very very top of the game but I don't know it's really weird where you have a squad that are all underperforming you know back in my playing days you'd have like three or four players not having a great time but the rest of them would carry you forward and that's what makes a great squad and I just can't to be fair I'm not immersed in Liverpool I'm not a Liverpool fan but I'd like to say it'd be great if Robbie was here now and talk about him his time at Liverpool but literally it's like I don't know how these players can be so good one year and I mean I mean Saturday last year Do you know what Nick?
19:52I think they started towards the end of last season do you remember when they won the league? The bad form started they went away weren't they in Ibiza or something yeah they do remember seeing Slott Arnie Slott was DJing yeah DJing in Ibiza but that's
20:09Paddy McGuinness:imagine Sir Alex DJing before the season's done I think it's classless do you know what I've never thought of it like that because again being a football fan and I kind of like you know I like personality and stuff like that but when I saw that image of Klopp and them all out in Ibiza, sorry, slots out in Ibiza and DJing and all having a beer, I was smiling, I was like, oh, good on them. But actually, now as you've put it that way, yeah, the season wasn't over, was it? No, the season wasn't over and they finished the season quite quickly. Look, we have a night out, of course we do. When you win the league, it's brilliant.
20:48We used to have a night with our families, didn't we? One night with our families and one night on our own. and for them to go to Ibiza before the season's fit I thought it was you can look back I'm not saying that's the problem of course they're not but I think it just lacked a little bit of class and the form went look I know they've won the league already it's done but they weren't really in anything else and then they've started this season badly as well now look I know they've won a lot of the games but they've been seeing loads of goals and you could see this coming they've lost six out of the last seven games I think for me with the slot
21:21Paddy McGuinness:I think he's bought players or the club's bought players and obviously they do it together they brought players and for me they're playing them when they don't deserve to play so Isaac for instance Etikite how's he not playing every game he's been the best player he's started he had a great start he's signing scoring goals and then I'm only looking from my opinion my thought process if I'm playing well I think I should be playing no matter who comes into that football club if you're playing well it's their job to knock you off your perch Now, if you drop off that level, 10%, 5%, whatever it is, then the manager is quite right when they're right to put this new signing in.
21:59Paddy McGuinness:But if you're playing like he was playing at the start of the season and you're getting dropped, it doesn't feel right that. They're not getting a lot of things right. I don't think you can get to the midfield. When you're winning leagues, you normally have quite a settled team, especially in the middle of the pitch. You don't know which three. Probably Gravenberg is going to play with two others. You just don't know what's going on. The right-back never replaced Trent. Well, they've got the... Kirk has, is it? No, sorry, that was the left part one. And what's the... Bradley. Bradley. Oh, Connor Bradley.
22:26Connor. But again, they've been... Chronic migraine is 15 or more headache days a month, each lasting four hours or more.
22:34Paddy McGuinness:Botox, onabotulinum toxin A, prevents headaches in adults with chronic migraine before they start. It's not for those with 14 or fewer headache days a month. It prevents, on average, eight to nine headache days a month versus six to seven for placebo. Prescription Botox is injected by your doctor. Effects of Botox may spread hours to weeks after injection, causing serious symptoms. Allerge your doctor right away, as difficulty swallowing, speaking, breathing, eye problems, or muscle weakness can be signs of a life-threatening condition. Patients with these conditions before injection are at highest risk.
23:01Side effects may include allergic reactions, neck and injection site pain, fatigue, and headache. Allergic reactions can include rash, welts, asthma symptoms, and dizziness. Don't receive Botox if there's a skin infection. Tell your doctor your medical history, muscle or nerve conditions, including ALS Lou Gehrig's disease, myasthenia gravis or Lambert-Eaton syndrome, and medications, including botulinum toxins, as these may increase the risk of serious side effects. Why wait? Ask your doctor, visit BotoxChronicMigraine.com, or call 1-800-44-BOTOX to learn more. Place a bozzolite right back in.

It works at the molecular level to gently dissolve stains deep within the enamel where your brush can't reach. It's proof that daily routine can be remarkable. That's the science of wow. Colgate Optic White. Do you think, going back to sort of, like you said, a beaver and all the rest of it, when I think back to when you were playing at United U2, and you were winning the leagues and you were winning the FA Cups and everything else, I never got a sense of that United team that they used to turn up you might have done but I never got a sense that you were all giving it we're big time we're above all you lot we've already won this do you think with that going to Ibiza having a drink before the season's over everyone's playing well do you think they were sort of there's a bit of an element where they were expecting themselves ah we'll just beat these and they've just not focused enough it feels a little bit like that doesn't it when you look at them there's possibly an overconfidence about them like I say it's coming back year after year trying to win a league it's not easy and they've not been able to do it good players yeah great players great players you're Ryan Giggs you're Roy Keane who come back year after year after year and do it, them City players they're Foden, you're John Stones, you're Rodgers they come back year after year you don't just turn up for one year climb the mountain and all of a sudden next year I can't bother this year that's what makes players great for such a long time it's interesting when you look at Manol and I'll move on from Liverpool because again it's been done to death but like you've got Van Dijk as a captain but when I watch them especially that game at the weekend I'm going like who's in charge on that pitch like it didn't feel like because he digs people out Van Dijk really half a time it's on him and it has done it past but I'm going it just seems like there's no one really you know you had like Sid Roy and what have you they've lost the determination to win games of football they just have now look Van Dijk's a great centre-half brilliant he's been a really good is he great I don't know because he's got to be great to come back year after year and do it he's been really good for a period of time but I always think when you're winning leagues Nicky might feel different when you win a game within five you're happier you celebrate within five minutes you think about next week I think that's gone out of Liverpool
27:09Paddy McGuinness:I think also it's really tough to sit here and have a pop-up slot he won the league last year let's not forget that but I think he won it with Klopp's team yeah he didn't have to do a lot he didn't have to do a lot he put the foundation into place and then he left and he's come into this he's obviously a very very good manager by the way tactically he's been there a long time in the game a long time he's going to a team that's like jackpot and then he's got the league one and then this year over the summer and the end of last season he's obviously thinking right how do I get this to be my team I can imagine him sat there thinking people will still be thinking that's Jürgen's team I want this to make this my team or I want to be the man that everyone points at and goes that's the man that's what I'd be like so he's then gone out bought these new players and let's be honest he's struggling to make a squad Which when you were buying them on paper, everyone's going, oh, well, that's that sort.
27:58Paddy McGuinness:See, I don't think so. I still think the Izak won, even though he did really well at Newcastle, really well at Newcastle, let's be honest. I think the price tag for him was ridiculous. And the circumstances didn't help. And the circumstances was ridiculous. And I do think when you're bringing people into a squad, if you upset the apple cart, if you like, that's bad, that squad's just won the league. You bring a player in on that much money, sorry, for that much money, he's kicked up such a fuss to leave a club that looked after him let's be honest giving me chance that's alarm bells ringing for me I don't care what anybody says and I understand why the lad wanted to leave and he hasn't gone to Liverpool he just won the league but it's alarm bells ringing and I'm telling you now you start messing about with a squad's dynamic that has done so well the year before you're asking for trouble You've done well seeing that though because when I saw him by these players I thought that's it for everyone No Honestly I'm not seeing this I know you see him sitting there and saying in the aftermath, but I just think that, specifically the circumstances around it all, it's just never going to work.
29:00Paddy McGuinness:Now, I might sit here nine months time and look at an absolute dick for saying that. He might go on firing and score loads of goals. And I'm sure he's very, very capable of doing that. But I'm telling you now, I just think that if you've got a proper squad built and we've played in really good squads where you've got each other's back and you're not all best mates, Roy Keane's, everyone knows you weren't Peter Smilk's best mate. there's certain other dynamics within our changing rooms but when we went on to a football pitch or a training pitch that squad was tight you could go to a night out on a Wednesday night if you had no game and that squad would be tight and again you wouldn't all be best mates you wouldn't all go out for dinner together on a normal night but when you affect a squad and affect it in a really dodgy way in my opinion then you're asking for trouble You know a mate of mine sounds random he was in the SES for 12 years and I was talking to him about obviously life and death the missions they're on and what but he said to me that He said, you're in a small squad.
29:54He said, and you're there for each other regardless. He said, but not everyone gets on. He said, but you're there to do a job. He said, and you literally put your life on the line for the bloke at the side here, even if you don't get on. And it's funny, in any walk of life, when you're a team, that's what it's all about. Them's the ones who are successful.
30:14Paddy McGuinness:If I was sat in a changing room, this is God's honest truth, and I had a seven or an eight out of ten player every week who was a great lad and you add your back. I'd rather have him than someone who's a superstar who's 9, 10 out of 10 every week but a complete dick. Yeah. All day long and you can ask anybody who's been in a high-performing squad. You've got to have that. It's massively important. I do agree with that. And by the way, I'm not saying that he's actually a dick. What I'm saying is I don't know his personality but there was dynamics around that transfer that wasn't right. And I tell you now, I spoke to a few older Liverpool players who have said the same thing about it.
30:47Paddy McGuinness:You wouldn't want to welcome him into your after what's been said. you wouldn't want to welcome into your squad you'd be surprised in a squad of players especially a successful squad of players how much people don't like each other that much well when you two told me of weird you didn't even get each other fucking Christmas card I was like I think everyone thinks best of mates you do honestly as a fan I presume you're together all the time and you're out and everything else I think that happens with the foreign lads you say all the time don't you ships in the nights you're not my mate you're my colleague work colleague you should say it to Gary and Phil you're not the mate you're the work colleague you're a colleague but it's true no but it's true I consider them all really crack yeah of course Scholesy Nev all the lads different when you finish really yeah you're all best mates you know each other's 12 it's hard not to be but you're not in each other's pockets all the time but I think the foreign lads become more close because they come to a different country without the family don't forget we were brought up in Manchester I've got my own mates from school I've got my own family around me it's different but yeah I think I do believe that the dynamics of a squad is the most important thing and I'm going back to the Arsenal thing if you look at their dynamics of their squad they've got a lot of young similar aged players who are very very hungry to go and win something How did you find that next?
31:59I never signed for another club all these new signings going into Liverpool look like you signed for Newcastle didn't you from us?
32:04Paddy McGuinness:When I went to Newcastle it was a real shock for me if I'm honest with you because when I was at United and it's easy when you win it's easy to build good teams but when you win that's quite an easy thing to do but when I went to Newcastle I was surprised about the disconnect. You'd have one group, which was the older pros, mostly British. Then you'd have the younger lads who were like a night out and single, which is fine. That's what happens. And you'd have the foreign lads. Now, you have that dynamic in every single football club, but you don't have it where it's not connected. You know what I mean?
32:42Paddy McGuinness:It's still split. Saturday afternoon split. Yeah, and you could see it. and it was very it was weird because you think that everything's going to be easier and like I say it's easy when you're winning things but that's what really comes to my mind when I went to Newcastle you'd have like a crew of British 27 year old plus players that were mates and go for a pint and have a bite to eat or laugh and joke and then you'd have the younger ones who would be more single no kids no wife living in apartments enjoying the life the best group to be in and then you'd have the foreign lads which group was you in?
33:13Paddy McGuinness:I was right in the middle all three of them he was a bridge all three of them I was right in the middle and again but again it was that's not that is the norm the norm's not what we had and you forget about that and you wouldn't know that because you've not been at any other football club but you know you think that where you're at England probably felt a bit like that yeah you think that where you're at that's the norm and that's what every football club's like but it's not it's not and I like I said I went to Newcastle loved the football club when I was there the fans were amazing fans I really enjoyed my time there it was ups and downs but literally it was really weird when you're thinking well I never went out once in five years where all the scoffers together really and we used to go out every other week all together and you'd have Peter Schmeichel there Roy Keane there Teddy Sheringham there me Scolze Oligon Associar Ronnie Johnson Yapsta and every single person would be there now every single person weren't best mates and sitting down laughing and joking but every single person would be there we made a point that everyone where everyone had to go.
34:14There were no little four or five groups. Now you've said that actually, you're right, because even non-league football when you're playing with your mates, there's not 11 of you out sat together. You'll all go out and you split off in your own little mates. You could be on a building site
34:31Paddy McGuinness:and you're always going to gravitate to your mates. And that's what we'd do. If I was going on a team meeting, which is what we called it, I'd still be sat with Scaldi or Giggsie on it, and Keeney. But you'd still all be having a bit... so when you go to like you say you know you signed for Newcastle what's on day one when you're going in what's going through your mind are you thinking like I've got to make a good impression I've got to go and speak to the captain like what sort of it's weird for me because I was in he was in Chicago weren't we you're laughing at me you're going in Chicago every time he says something like you go like that and I know this fucking story we can never talk about I'll tell you the story no I'll talk about it alright so I was in Chicago and the day the mind has gone and drag me to the breakfast and he's gone no the deal's been done you go to Newcastle drag me to the breakfast and I've gone I've gone alright great and he's gone you've just got anything so you're flying home the next day so then I think we asked as quick as that we asked for a night out so he said right but he's leaving you have a night out we had a really good night out to be fair anyway you haven't thought too much about that but I remember I got on the plane the next day to go up from Chicago to get home to go and sign for Newcastle and you because of the I was there from the age of 12 and I was left when I was 30 to that's a long time and I'm thinking I'm nervous yeah I'm like I'm nervous here going to but I knew I knew Alan I knew Lee Bowyer I knew Kieran Dyer was Alan captain Alan was captain so I knew Alan from England so it was a bit easier for me but the big thing that I felt when I went there was this was what Mrs.
36:02Paddy McGuinness:Moorstaker made was when I went there I started off really well at Newcastle the first probably first four games I got a man at match every game did really well and then I started doing things that weren't my natural game because I felt like right I've been at this football club all these years I've played so many times for England I've won all these trophies I've got to now be something that I'm not you're almost trying to prove yourself to the fans I'm trying to prove myself to the fans that I'm actually better than I actually am rather than just sticking to my own game which was getting around the pitch being aggressive winning the ball giving it to the better players that was it fundamentally that was my job but then I started trying to do things that worked so I ended up having a nightmare I got lost in this big mind spin I had a shitter for probably a season and then I went back and I did okay.
36:42Paddy McGuinness:But the big thing for me was, was the actual, I didn't have my familiarity around me. I didn't know the kit man. I didn't have him there. I didn't have the people that I'd known since I was 14. So when you see these people coming from a foreign country and they're going to a club and there's loads at United now that, when you sit and talk and you do the podcast or you do interviews, I find it really difficult to speak about people having a nightmare because I only went two and a half hours at the road. these people come from the other side of the world you see like Varon or you see a Cleberson and it must be difficult for them lads so for me the hardest thing was familiarity and trying to prove that I was a really really top top player and trying to help the club it was difficult and it took me a long time for it to hit So with that in mind like you were just saying about Varon when you had a player come into United where they have come from another country and obviously the Premier League is a tough league to play in what did you lot do with those players like to sort of ingratiate them with the team?
37:42Paddy McGuinness:We just had a really good connection and we was very lucky that we had the local lads in it. We had the lads that got brought in like Akini or Schmeichel, we were all like proper men who looked after you. But we got lucky because we had a lot of Scandinavian lads come over and they were really English, if you like. They bought into it really quickly. so then you'd have one or two of that come in like a Varun who was a great lad like unbelievable talent but more importantly a great lad didn't speak a word of English but the funniest nicest lad you'll meet what genius on the football pitch and you just try to be mates with him I remember Diego Forlan come in and I used to pick him up at the Marriott Hotel every morning to make sure he weren't getting a taxi because it was too much from my house it was the worst 10 minute 50 minute drive ever because we didn't say a word to each other but I didn't want anybody you never wanted anybody to be on their own.
38:34Paddy McGuinness:And that was what was really good, but a good story for us for all. Just hang on, so he gets in the car with you and you're set off. Are you not saying anything because he can't speak English? Bit of both, to be fair. What did you say? He has put the radio on and have a listen to it. What did you say? Have a listen to talks both of them. No, you're just like, hi mate, you alright? He's going, yeah? And you're going, have a good weekend? He's going, yeah? And you're going, this is fucking hard, this is hard. And you're doing about 90 mile an hour to get to train as quick as you can but I'm sure he's thinking I wish this fucker wouldn't pick me up I'd rather get a taxi but literally it's like you say it must be so hard coming from these South American and you forget about these things Varon was in Italy wasn't it I suppose for quite some time but like you're saying you're going two and a half hours thinking how hard it is they're coming from they're coming from a different remember when Seba he was freezing at Carrington one day and he'd come out and he was literally he had a coat on he had a snooze on he had gloves he's shaking he's just Varon and he said I can't feel my teeth I can't open my teeth we don't have to rinse them he was absolutely freezing cold he'd never seen like weather that bad he'd obviously been to Italy but it wasn't obviously where he must have been but difficult for him and I do find it difficult to have a pop-it player that come from afar and try and buy into our culture you want them to do swell the talent he had was like frightening he bought him the little witch was his Yeah, Little Witch because his dad was called The Witch.
40:00Oh, was he? Oh, I didn't know that.
40:03Paddy McGuinness:So literally, they bought Seba and I swear to God, I'm sat, I think I was holding something like that on my way back before pre-season. I'm thinking that's me because that's my career over. I'm lying. It was, they played Everton at home the first game of the season. I was suspended. He scored. He got a sudden 10 minutes and I swear to God, the whole stadium stood up and clapped him. I'm sat in the director's box and suspended and thinking, I don't think I'm ever going to play again. I'd have Scholes in front of me. Keane, he was there. Bex was obviously midfield then Bronk comes and I'm thinking how am I ever going to get back in this team we only used to play with two midfields two out of four two out of four and you're thinking this is one to add but it just didn't work out for him and like Scores he was saying I wanted him to do well through Gritty T because he was such a really really great lad but then he's taking your position so yeah but I don't know Diego was a stranger when I did Diego coming out of Barndorfer months could he his confidence was low he was a nice lad and then he left.
40:57So when he's in, regardless on the pitch, when you see him in training, was he the same as well? Confidence had gone. Confidence had gone. He didn't score in training for a while.
41:06Paddy McGuinness:But honestly, our training, our squad was really, really, really, not roof, yeah, roofless, but nice roofless. So you'd get absolutely annihilated in training and he's went, you could just see him go like that, vroom, went straight to the floor. No matter how much you're picking him up, he couldn't get back up. He couldn't get, he scored a couple of goals at Liverpool, Liverpool Liverpool Liverpool yeah and he's a hero just for that yeah just for that they're still seeing his name now did he score a big goal in his Chelsea or somewhere as well at home I think but then he goes away he went on to win the Golden B yeah that's right yeah yeah it's bloody ridiculous he's a tennis player now he does play tennis yeah it's random isn't it because I've heard of like that was Keeney's fault that he wants to be a footballer Keeney Keeney's centre for tennis because he's a bobbling I was with him in January and he was going to play in a professional tournament like a doubles tournament yeah brilliant I played a game of the week no he was there Cleverson Cleverson was there he lives in Florida now that's another one it didn't really work for did it he played against us in that quarter final against Brazil brilliant it says here I didn't know it says Rooney and Ferdinand have spoken about taking the piss out of Ever and Vidic when they first joined what was that I think that's very brave taking the piss out of Vidic because I want to take the piss out of him yeah I ran into him once on a football I mean literally ran into him and I fucking I think I'd like you know when you say you get knocked down you get that white flash and we're like that and then we're all like something's just happened fucking ran into something it's like you say you know you talk about a ruthless world it was ruthless around the morning Wazer and Rio would have been ruthless like hammering him in training I remember Patrice's debut at Man City Trevor Sinclair absolutely destroyed him honestly I remember seeing his face half time it's just like what the fuck's happened and he got the piss took out so I used to say to him the gaffer brought you over to ride his horses for him I thought you were a fucking jockey but you know as well with that kind of like I mean that crack like that funny enough if you're like you know you're an English lad and whatever and you know sometimes you come over from another country you might not get the like it's a friendly bit of chat but you're thinking well hang on a minute they weren't friendly them two turned out to be unbelievable players by the way oh yeah absolutely they both got a little bit of steak Rio would have got a load of steak I remember I was going to say I remember hearing Rio talk about when he joined United and you were having your first training session in the boxes yeah we used to go in the boxes and you weren't great at first Rio you got better don't get me wrong you said someone pink balls and he bounced off his foot and Oli Gunnar said how much yeah how much it was ruthless wasn't it yeah the boxes are a story Big Sol I remember Big Sol in a box at England which is funny it's funny what was that so we're doing this box and Sven sorry Saul was probably one of the best natural defenders but when it sorted his feet out in a little box couldn't do it I remember Sven going to ask to me oh my god who's he from this is from Wales he went oh my god is this the same Saul Cameron who plays for Arsenal he just couldn't sort his feet out so then the boxes sorted you out it sorted your feet out not only that it was banter and it brought the lads into that it's not really a bollocking but it's a bit of a you're welcome to the club you almost used to judge players from them boxes didn't you I'll tell you something you'd fall out with your best mates in a box you'd fall out because like you blame him and they're sliding in it was like it was really ruthless it's funny isn't it but that kind of stuff like that in the box and bollocking and taking the piss probably then when comes game day you're thinking Solovey I'll fucking show you it got the England shirts on and that's that you know what I mean so when you look at players like Isak and Virts how would you treat him in training would you be taking the piss would you kind of go he's having a rough time of it especially someone like Isak I know he's played in the Premier League at Newcastle but considering the circumstances what we just talked about with all the story behind it and the uproar and everything else how would you be with someone like him I think you try and help them of course because of the part of your team and you want your team to win games but it's difficult where's that line do you know what I mean where's the line that you cross I think it's got to a point now where at first you'd be taking the piss like we did with Patrice like we did with Vidic like we did with everyone who came really but I think it's probably gone past that point of taking the piss now it's serious six Premier League games out of seven and trying to settle them players in and you wouldn't think it'd be that difficult what do you think for her it's just come from Germany it's a good league probably similar style of football to English probably better over here don't get me wrong he's like he knows the Premier League there's something just not quite right with what's going on there but I think as far as settling them in it should be quite easy I think each person within a squad has their different roles within that because you'd have someone like Akini who's an example you use as a captain he would he would give them a real like bollocking but then he'd be after them and like having a right pot but then if he'd seen that he was having a bit of a bad time but they're trying everything then he'd be a bit different I might be a bit different with him having a laugh and a joke or picking him up or taking for a bite to eat or a drink never was more of a like do everything for your time so everyone's got the different dynamics within the squad the how to treat a player who's having a tough time I think it depends on what the player's like what are them two players doing now are they training properly are they looking after themselves properly are they living the right life you don't see that that Liverpool team at the minute having a good crack off do you you don't see them like No, it'd be horrible though.
46:49Yeah, it'd be horrible. I don't think you see that in most squads though. You need a few people in there who, like you just said, them seven out of tens, but they're great lads and they put a shift in and they just keep that sort of camaraderie going.
47:03Paddy McGuinness:I think it's a bit like, going back to that thing with Scully was saying, it's a bit like the manager knows who can take a bollock in and who needs to put their arm around. And I think that's the same with all players. Some players might be a bit cocky and might be having a shitter, but still going out on a Saturday the night and giving it big licks then he would get absolutely annihilated and I mean annihilated but then you got on the other side of the dynamic which might be a great lad is you know he's always going home he's doing his energy at seven in the morning when you come in he is there last out and they get treated a bit different I think you just got to you know work out which way to go with him like we said before it's a difference between good players and great players yeah I mean you can come back every year and I feel probably at this point you've won the actually sellers because the team's playing a bad I was just starting to look after ourself a little bit.

It's certified fresh and verified hot. Now we party. This is incredible! Wow, I am clearing the rest of the day. Disney and Pixar's hoppers, now available on Disney+. Rated PG. I've seen over the weekend Pogba made his return, so his first appearance in 811 days. Now, he's a player that divides opinions.
49:27While I've got you to hear, tell me a little bit about his personality. Forget what we read on social media. media in the news what's he like to be around as a player and a trainer and with the lads I can't speak of being with him as a young player when he was he was a nice person really nice person really talented player you could see he was going to be a proper footballer of course you could he played in that reserve team with Warren Joyce now I know he was a little bit upset when he went I think Raphael and might have been Phil Jones the Blackburn game around the Christmas time It was actually when I came back.
50:06It was that game after that that I decided to come back. I always think sometimes, was I one who possibly stopped his development at United as well? I don't know. Look, he was a talented kid. I remember he weren't happy at the time, but I also remember he was playing in the reserves at the time with Warren Jot and he wasn't playing very well. He wasn't doing well at that time and he missed a chance. If he was doing well, I think he'd have been straight in because he was that talented. he was such a big powerful player you didn't want to go near him honestly he was just one of them now whether he changed or what I don't know I'm not sure Were you excited when he came back?
50:44Yeah Yeah of course I was I thought wow we've got the the player we all thought he was going to be as a young kid but maybe his attitude wasn't the same maybe look it's alright saying he was mixing with the wrong pick I don't know I do know at the time that the manager I'd say wasn't very complimentary about his agent and maybe they say the same I don't know I don't know the ins and outs of it but I think he probably wanted a fortune to stay as a young player when he just hadn't he hadn't reached them heights to be able to do that now when he came back I was excited yeah wow you know the player that developed at Juventus it was it was amazing yeah but for some reason it just didn't work lucky he weren't the only one was it it It was about that time when the decline started.
51:33But as a talented lad and as a person, the person that I knew as a young player.
51:39Paddy McGuinness:Yeah. I'm going to say, I didn't really know him that well as a young player because I'd gone, I was at Newcastle. When he came back, I met him a few times. Really good lad. Yeah. One-on-one, really good lad. Obviously it didn't work out. I know that's goal. He said it was in a transition period for the club. They were by him. all these superstars Sanchez come in Ibrahimovic come in it was amazing for the club I think it was Latin to be fair but I think the club made the rod for their own back with the signing me they built this big monster the commercial monster and then didn't like the fact that he was getting too big so when he when he signed was you at the club any sign when he come back the second time so I was there and they set this big studio up and it's like a three-day filming all his and back his advert which is obviously sponsored by Adidas which was his boot sponsor and it was huge I was thinking it's a bit over at the top it's like he's coming back to a football club yeah he's an unbelievable player yeah he made himself a superstar at Juve and was the top player I remember we had a chat was it me and you spoke to Edward about him cruise remember we sat in the office cruise Tony Crowes oh no I don't think it was me oh yeah it was yeah it was me you Giggs them last four weeks and we were saying about which one do you want to go and get and we said go and get both of them and Man United go and buy both of them and they just got the Pogba so when you're saying about and it makes perfect sense but I just never realised it happened when you say you had the meeting with Woodward would someone like him have sat down with senior pros like you two and gone we're looking at signing this player what's your opinion and would it would that have an effect on the decision don't know to be fair i just remember ryan took control of the club for five four or five six games at the end of the season four games yeah and then obviously me and skulls did it with him along with phil as well i remember obviously they were looking for the right mind just come in and and take the job so they obviously needed targets to go and get in the summer and we got i was i'd left the training and got called back and there was a meeting with myself Scholesy Ryan and Ed Woodward and he was asking I think Ed Woodward was on a Zoom call it wasn't so much face to face I think he was in London and it was like who would you get and he gave us a list of midfielders and I think well no Popper was one Crowsy when you were saying Fabergast might have been one as well Fabergast might have won I think even Modric might have been one as well and I remember we was all discussing pros and cons to them all and the end of the conversation was go for both of them Crows and Pogba because we're Man United and we need to get back to the top and if you get one it's like Ying and Yang we mentioned it a while ago about you look at centre backs like with Harry Maguire and you need a footballing player next to him it's a bit the same with midfielders you know we're not all the same you need a bit of a compliment to each other and that was how it was left and then they went all out for Pogba This is just it interests me because I've never thought to ask you about that actually when Giggs did two charge four or five games you two were there who else?
54:52Phil Phil when they asked you to do that did they just say did they actually say right Luke you're going to have five or six games just keep us afloat keep everything ticking over but we are going to bring someone else in or did they kind of say to you all if you do a good job we didn't have that discussion
55:14Paddy McGuinness:it was a discussion with Ryan on his own I'd imagine he just basically said I want Scolzi and Buddy and Phil with me and they must have gone, yeah, fine, have what you want, it's four games, and we'll look at it. I actually thought Brown was going to get the job. My belief now is if... He did all right in the M4 games, didn't he? I don't remember it being sort of disastrous. I think 1-2 drew two, I think it was. I don't think we lost. I don't think we lost. But I think if Mourinho wouldn't have come available, because he got sacked from where everyone or left his job, if he wouldn't have come available, I think Ryan would have got a job.
55:43Paddy McGuinness:Looking back, it probably would have been the right thing to do. Yeah. He would have kept the culture. they'd have kept the culture I think again just even through doing this podcast with you two and what you're about as people and what you talk about and what you talk about on here I kind of and it probably is a name like Mourinho you go well it's Mourinho he's going United it's massive but really Giggsie staying in charge and you two you're doing the coaching and everything else it just seems like a no-brainer I think it was really tough for the club though because if you look at they'd have looked very very stupid when Mourinho came available that they didn't have a real chat to him and look at him because he was the biggest superstar manager at the time I never thought he was right for Man United or Mourinho no but he'd come in and won they just went for the name yeah that's what I'm saying they'd have looked stupid if he hadn't gone and spoke to them and he did and obviously he schmoozed them and to be fair Mourinho does what he does he goes into clubs and wins and he did that he couldn't see Man United and he won people can say what they want about him they like him they don't like him they come in and won but I genuinely do believe if Mourinho wouldn't have come available Ryan would have got the job I do I think it probably would looking back on it like it's going to be said now to keep the coach in the way it all went from then I think it would have been the right thing oh does it work when so Giggs ate four games I think Rude come in what do you think two or three games no it's a bit more was it a bit more than that Rude don't know can't remember it only seemed short but again seem to kind of work alright Ollie the same so what happens are these clubs is it all money where they go we need a name because someone like Rude and Giggsie Ollie unbelievable players world class but they just don't have that name in management and it's United and it's arguably the world's biggest club you'd expect United they want the best in class and everything whether it's a player or manager so if the best in class becomes even if they don't become available you just go and get them it's man united they should have the best now marina at the time of course he probably was the best in class available was louis van gaal i'm not too sure and where them your ryan kiggs is your ruban this arise your ollie gunners probably again not at that time especially um now when you can't get them type of people So, I always come up and look, but I think this is Man United.
58:15It's got to be, you've got to have the very best that is available. But when they have those little spells of being in charge and they do well, what are they doing different with the lads that a Mourinho's not doing? Or a Van Gaal's not doing? It's just a different voice sometimes, a little bit of a... Because obviously when a team aren't winning, there's people who are in the team who aren't happy with the previous manager or the previous coach and sometimes just a little bit of a freshen up maybe I think Ru didn't play a little bit differently Ryan as well everybody respected Ryan massively obviously because of what he'd done at the club and there's almost a little bit of an energy boost sometimes there isn't always but a lot of the time there's an Oli found it for his first however bounce effect but suddenly that wears off because you haven't quite got the experience do you know the one
59:04Paddy McGuinness:I can never get my head around is why Roy Keane never got a chance I do and he's a mate so it's a bit biased but if you look at his personality and his playing career and his character and what he did in his management he did it unbelievable at Sunderland and if you look at all the troubles he've had and he still lives local I can't for the life of me fathom how no one's had a discussion with him and sat down and said would you be interested in this job because I'm telling you if you're a clever manager or even just as an assistant you think about him with Martin O 'Neill and these people you think if David Moyes would have brought it right I just think when it's been going bad if you'd have got Roy in and Roy's a very astute person he's a clever bloke he'd then go and get a really good coach in to do the stuff that he might think he's not the best at because I think Roy is very much a Sir Alex Ferguson manager he's a manager he manages people he comes alive on match days he tells people what to do he looks at he'd go and get some whatever his flaws he's not too big to think well I need this and I need that and I'll go and get it.
1:00:08Paddy McGuinness:He's not stupid enough to think I can do everything. And I just can't for the life think how powers that be at that football club would not have spoke to him over the last five years. Do you think it's down to are we left? No, because that's gone. No, I know, but do you know what it's like? People sort of look along memories. I'd get that if people were still in charge that we left, but that's all changed. That dynamic's all changed. So there's new people at the top. I just think it's bizarre how you look at, you're looking all over the world I think United fans would love that as well but you're looking all over the world for the right person and the right person might just be on your doorstep there and I get it if they speak to him and go not for us but they're not having a discussion with him it's a different football club to what where you knew it I don't know about you Nick you worked there quite recently but I don't really know anybody there I don't know anybody there I wouldn't know if you had a ticket I wouldn't know who to phone I would know it's a true story just saying that I've been asked for a couple of tickets I wouldn't know where to go I wouldn't know how to get a ticket that's actually a letter here I have four season tickets so we use them my son uses them every single week I'm saying mine as long as gone you get people asking so I've had a Salford lad who wants to go to the game this week it's a couple of tickets so I've had to ring a tout get out honestly I know a tout no it's just it's just bonkers innit I just don't know anybody it's just different do you know when you go my lad's got the same thing you scan it you scan it don't you if you don't use it if you don't use it three times you get them taken off so I've had an email saying I'm ticket taken off and I rang up and gone can I speak to somebody about this please and obviously it's just a switchboard it might even be a football fan and they go who am I speaking to please and I go Nicky Butt and they go okay who's that who's that I couldn't say it but I feel like is that the lad who's played for Newcastle I played about 450 games this quarter and I've won about six tights seven tights but it is a different world I wouldn't know I'm not complaining about that no that's just the way it is and that's the way it happens I get that but it's like my go to was Caff just because you played for the club you're not entitled my go to was Caff Caff I need some tickets no problem I'll get you now Caff tea lady all that you know gone which is wrong in my eyes you know those people who have been stalwarts at the club and just I have no skin in the game with United but forget the football when I read they'd sack the tea lady I was like that is a fucking piss take but that's a different story but I know you might get the job now because you're a tea specialist hey the teeth will be sparkling do you know just what you're saying like you don't expect tickets and all the rest of it I get that but I know I kind of think hang on a minute you know I know you went to Newcastle but like I said the amount of games you played your lifelong service as a player to United when I've been at United playing, you know, and I've been in them change rooms loads of times, your fucking pictures are still holding trophies and everything else.
1:03:15That's got to count for something. Do you know what I mean? We only played for them. No, I know, but surely it's a bit of loyalty. Like, it should be. Well, that's loyalty to get me a ticket. That's not loyalty, is it? Of course it is. Well, if you give everything for a club. Yeah, but that was... Listen. You're going back 13 years now since the last time I played. well it doesn't matter what you've done does it alright I'll give you an example no of course it does like John McGinley at Bolton John McGinley super John McGinley yeah but he could still walk into Bolton now and get tickets and everything else you know what I mean like if you've been a player for a club and you're a legend at that club and the fans love you I think the club I'm not saying like you should be on the payroll or anything but if you want tickets you should have a number I'm not having it.
1:04:04Paddy McGuinness:I'm not sure if you wanted tickets, you'd get tickets. But I think what's going on, I wouldn't know who to ring. I wouldn't have a clue who to ring. We don't mind paying for it. We'd pay for it, wouldn't we? But we just don't know who to ring. That's it, because the club is just different. It's like a million miles away from where we saw it, really. We knew it. So when you go there now... I'm not saying that's a bad thing. No, no. It might be a good thing as well. When you go back then, watching a game, do you feel like you've never played there? do you what I mean by that is like do you feel you can go in and go oh I know where I'm going up there or do you feel as though someone's going to excuse me what you're doing you're not allowed in here yeah well you've still got your passing and stuff get out you know when it's working to TNT Sports yeah or on a Thursday night you're still like showing your pass and everyone's looking so would that be the same for someone like Gaz who's their all time yeah probably if you've got your pass so literally you've got your pass and they go Nicky can have your pass when you go in and you go, yeah, here you go.
1:05:04Paddy McGuinness:And then I look at your pass and I go, are you signing this for me as well? So you pull the shirt out and you're thinking, what do you want me autograph for if you don't know who we am? So literally, but it is football. That's what it's like. But do you know what? You should just remind me, this Sunday, I do my show every radio tour every Sunday from Salford. And I forgot my pass this Sunday. And the security blow had stopped me. And I went, there's a rally chopper in reception with a fucking big thing on it saying over 10 million quid raised. My picture's above it. I've got a picture behind a reception and he went you know what he meant he went I do think I know your face but if you've not and I'm going fucking hell it's just lost a bit of the personal touch yeah that's it's a juggernaut isn't it wow it is honestly when I hear things like that and again no one knows anyone a living but I just kind of think come on players who've who've given the role for a club if you're in for half a zero in one season you're gone and whatever fair enough but certain players should be afforded certain things at clubs the funny thing is you'll see some players who maybe played 50 games or something they're in the director's box so what's happened there?
1:06:15who's invited them? when I say invited them they'll probably ring up and they might just go straight to the top or get their agents to ring him and say he wants to come to a game alright get me the director's box it's just something we'd never do well I've got a few mates who are United fans so I'm glad you two who have said that because I know they're on the verge of going, hey, when you see lads, can you see if they can get us any tickets when you're fucked? They can't get tickets for themselves. So any of you who are United fans... That's why I said it. Because nobody minds, nobody minds anymore.
1:06:43Yeah, that's a good show. Yeah, so anyone who rings you every other week. Just on a bit of, I say fun, it's probably not fun if it happens to you, but this injury Cole Palmer's picked up, so he stubbed his toe at home, right, he's just come back from injury and he's out again. freak injuries like that, modern game, loads of money, I should imagine the club was saying, wear a certain footwear at home, do this, don't wear flip-flops, you know what I mean? And he's gone out, he's stubbed his toe. Have you ever had an injury like that? Or have you, like, do you know of anyone who's had one? I had a weird injury, it was nothing like stubbing your toe.
1:07:22I had a blood clot in my eye. I was playing against Burnham, I think I might have been playing against Nicky actually. Nicky was playing for Burnham, he's on loan now, wasn't he, I think. and it was about the 70, 75th minute or something. I remember running over, someone was taking a throw in, so as he threw it, I reckon I saw about three walls coming at me. Really? And I just, I felt like I was getting a migraine. I don't know if you haven't used to get migraines, but I just felt like I'm getting a migraine, and I'm getting a migraine, but I never got the headache, and I just started blurring this in my eye.
1:07:54Right. So the day after, I went to see a specialist. The doctor thought it was going to be a migraine. I said, Doc, I'm really struggling. Ended up, played the rest of the game. I said, Doc, I'm struggling. I don't know what's happened. Something's wrong with me. I can't really say it all bit properly. So the day after, it was still the same. So he sent me to a eye specialist in Manchester and apparently a blood vessel had burst in my eye. Jesus. It just like splashed everywhere. So that's why I couldn't see. How does that get salted? Aspirin. Fucking hell. Yeah, there's nothing really. You just had to thin your blood.
1:08:29it was like a blood clot blood clot in your eye that just burst did you carry on playing? yeah it was only 10 minutes last I remember running out what the fuck I'm going to get a man I'm going to be sick you know Cole Palmer if you're stuck you told me this lad's had a blood clot in his eye I was out for I couldn't do anything I couldn't do any exercise for 4 months until the last month and the last month what I did I loved it I just trained with the keepers with Tony Cotan he was fucking brilliant smashing the ball the keepers all day He's just preaching to the converted here. I love training with the keepers.
1:09:02It helped me that in a way. It helped me technically. Yeah. I'd recommend that for any players, midfield players, who want to practice kicking. Come train with the keepers. It's brilliant.
1:09:11Paddy McGuinness:Yeah, tops it. I popped my meniscus. I stood up to go and get the remote control from somewhere, honestly. I just had a little pop in my knee and I've gone, I didn't think now of it. Go up next day to go in training and my knee was swelled up. Dr. Cinephysio, meniscus, I didn't have it repaired. Actually, before, it was probably about eight weeks before the World Cup. You can actually play with that, can't you? You can play with it, yeah, but it just goes like that and swells up. And I missed the last five games of the season and then went away with England. I trained on my own with England to get fit and I missed the first game.
1:09:45Paddy McGuinness:Was it Sweden, the first game? Yeah, I remember you were trying your best to get fit, weren't you? Yeah. And then I played the second game. It's a weird one, that meniscus, isn't it? My mind went, I just literally knelt down on floor. and I went oh there's so much just thingy in my knee but they say you've done something in training but you don't feel it because it's so small and it's on its way so it's on its way so when I stood up I obviously just popped it you were like you were brilliant in the World Cup probably England's best player in that World Cup didn't really work out the same for me after mine but no honestly because you probably thought you were going to be disappointed weren't you that you were going to miss it did they cut it out no just left mine alone and said leave it alone and I got away with it a little bit because it was my left one so I didn't really kick the ball too much with my left foot so I got away with it but it was one of them ones where I actually didn't feel it was right but you'd just be playing in a World Cup you'd think I'm just going to say I'm fine I'm not, I'm fine I don't worry about it as and when but yeah It's you coming back with Bex at the same time he's done his metatarsal his famous metatarsal Cos of like people pick injuries up when they shouldn't you know when you're not thinking about when you're in training or you're doing anything physical you're kind of aware of everything but when you like get up in the morning and stretch you go my fucking bike's gone you know you're not thinking about it outside of football did you used to get you weren't allowed to do anything I was going to say did they say anything so you go don't do this don't do that you think about them all playing paddle now and stuff in training complexes now didn't it we obviously couldn't go skiing or anything like that not that I've ever been skiing but you have a few times you're not allowed to do anything else hey the one this my golf club come play golf no no they've got a couple of buggies there I said to the manager I went I thought we weren't allowed buggies on here he went footballers I went footballers they're not allowed walk I went fucking what these lads I said the 20 odd year old fit as fucking fiddles I'm 52 lugging a fucking set of golf clubs around and my back's fucked and they're scooting past with full heads of ur giving it fucking lovely stuff full heads of ur I don't know what's so good well it's got everything to do with it drives me mad I'm putting my knee on a jet ski, but you're not supposed to go jet skiing or nothing.
1:11:56Paddy McGuinness:I had a jet ski in the summer. When you're going all day, you're not allowed to. It ensures it, but everyone goes on a jet ski, don't they? You went paragliding, weren't you? Oh, yeah. Yeah, I popped my knee. My other knee, actually. No, jet biking, jet skiing. Jet skiing. Did you used to get bullets if you got caught doing something? Like, say if someone saw you out on a mountain bike or something? When I was a kid, I used to play cricket. So I was never allowed to play cricket. Yeah. I was saying rugby. I played rugby league at school. Rugby league, did you? Yeah, not allowed to play rugby. rugby.
1:12:23That's what I'm saying, so this injury what Cole Palmer's got, will they, when you go on, will, in the modern game, will they say, Luke, you've got to have something on your feet at all times? No. No. I thought they would with that much money, because that's your tools, innit? When you're at home, you've got, well, that toe-protecting slippers on or something. Them's your tools, aren't they? Them's what you need to be looking after. You can't be walking around in bare feet. Listen, if they're going past on fucking buggies... It's a tool if he's stubbing his toe, though, innit? you can't have a go at the lad for somebody's toe get up in the middle of the night for a piss you can't be that sore can it why can't I play with that broken toe you know when you talk about freak injuries you don't remember when Alan Hansen used to do match of the day and then he were off for a bit and he came back and he had like sort of a beard and his face were a bit redder and they're like what's he been off with he fucking blew a candle out at home went like but you know because the wax stays in this is a true story Google that Alan Hansen blew a candle out and he couldn't do Match of the Day because all the wax went all over his face and burnt it I have not dreamt that please Google that
1:13:32Paddy McGuinness:he didn't blow a candle out he had a bit of a kinky night didn't he a bag full of candles Jack have a look at that true story thank you true story I remember because he'd come back on Match of the Day and he had like a beard and it just didn't look right and I'm like I don't remember that he had a face blowing his candles out no he was like we were talking about fancy candle and all the wax was gathered in he went like and it fucking splashed all over his face I mean what a silly bastard doing that seriously like that don't you oh I couldn't do that no oh no no they could do it with your tongue wouldn't they oh no no I used to have a mate who used to be able to put a fag in his mouth and dock it like that I was fucking put it in backwards yeah you see him put it yeah and you're like going fucking hell how do you even learn you can do that when you're smoking I'm going to stick that in my tongue thanks for watching make sure to like and subscribe you can find us on all your usual channels YouTube Spotify and Apple
