In short
The episode of Good, the Bad and the Football focuses on England at the World Cup and broader football debates. The hosts discuss England’s group success (topping the group) despite “not the best way” of playing, and argue the team is built around match-winners like Harry Kane, Marcus Rashford, and Jude Bellingham.
Key claims
Rashford’s aggressive threat is what England need; Bellingham’s deeper role works better than a traditional No.10; England should choose between Declan Rice and Kalvin/Anderson-style setups depending on opponent possession; and the squad lacks a classic No.10 option (they mention Morgan Rogers, Gibbs-White, and Cole Palmer as examples of what’s missing). They criticize Jordan Henderson being used instead of giving Conor “Cobby”/Cameron-like minutes to a player who can change games late. They also compare England’s style to France/Argentina’s pace and power.
Guests
Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt (former Manchester United teammates) join for the “Built Different” segment on Cristiano Ronaldo’s training/diet/sleep routines and longevity.

04Pack your bags and come on through Texas, Ohio, Alaska, we're up there too Comfort Inn It's calling your name Save on the stay Oh, and free waffles are yours to claim Well, I hope you like my little song Book direct at choicehiltails.com Hello and welcome to the good, the bad and the football sponsored by Midnight, the betting app that's built different. I thought he was here. Well, Scors, obviously Paddy's not here, as we know. He's left us on our own looking after ourselves. But he did leave us a message, which I'm going to play now, which I've not heard, so let's hear what he's got to say. Hello, lads.
47Hope you didn't think I'd leave you alone. I'm away filming at the moment, but as you're in the studios on a Sunday doing the good, the bad and the football, I've got a question for you. what's your ideal Sunday is it a lie in what's on your dinner what's on your breakfast in fact what's your perfect Sunday roast have a great show and don't fuck it up well there you go well my perfect Sunday is not standing in for fucking Paddy McGinnis I've got to be honest with you but it is a Sunday we're in filming where is he by the way he's in London filming his big break thing so good luck to him it's a fantastic show so hope it goes well I'm looking forward to that.
27But yeah, Sunday, what's your thing for a Sunday school? What's your ideal Sunday? I love a Sunday dinner. I love a Sunday dinner. What do you have on it though? So my perfect Sunday is a little bit of a lie-in, although I can't lie-in no more. I'm up at God knows what time I am. Go for a little walk if the weather's nice. Get back, have a brew, a nice cup of coffee or something like that. I'm not really into breakfast that early. But I'll try and starve myself to a Sunday roast. Roast beef, Sunday dinner, you cannot beat. You ask your puddings, all the trimmings, but you've got to have the pigs in blankets, which are really hard to find when it's not Christmas.
57Yeah, you're right. It is tough. You can make them now, can't you? I don't make Sunday roast. I go out for Sunday roast. I'm going out today for Sunday roast, actually. A nice Sunday roast can't beat it, but for me, yeah. I don't really have roast beef with Sunday dinner. Why? I like chicken. Oh, yeah? Because you don't like the fatty stuff or something? Yeah, I don't like messing about with it. Do you not? No, I can't beat it. I love all the veg and mash and roasters. Sunday roast. And then sit down, full belly, feet up, watching the game. Yeah. Man United, v. Arsenal on a Sunday. Always reminds me of a Sunday game.
28We were speaking before, because certain games remind you of certain things. Derby games always remind me of a Saturday morning. Liverpool games, Saturday morning. But for some reason, it sticks in my head. Afternoon kick-offs, 4 o 'clock on a Sunday is Arsenal game. You can't beat a Super Sunday. Super Sunday. That's my perfect Sunday. Get in bed, early doors, put a box set on, watch a bit of TV, fall asleep. Perfect Sunday. Don't get better than that. Ready for the week ahead. Yeah, absolutely. What's the game game? Yeah. What do you think? It wasn't great again, was it? I think the three games haven't been...
04I don't feel like I've seen a team yet that's going to win the World Cup.
11They are what they are, aren't they? It's not great to watch, but look, they could get better, don't get me wrong, but it's the squad he's picked. He's gone with a big, strong, powerful team that probably isn't going to play the greatest of football at times, but they're winning games. Obviously, Drew, the middle game, of course, against Ghana, but still, I think they've got match winners in the team. You think of your Canes and your Bellingham who scored last night. I just don't think they're an Argentine or a France at the minute. No, well, I watched France the other day, and it's the first time I thought, wow.
44They're so powerful up front, quick, aggressive, energetic. you're looking at Mbappe next minute the other little what's it called Elisa Dembele no the Dembele scores the hat trick and you're thinking wow they've got that many world beating on there it's ridiculous but then I watched the England game last night again I think England are what they are they just they know what they want to do they want to stifle games try and see games see the picture how Tuchel wants to play move the ball about just steady stat they don't really excite me at the minute but I was really happy to see Rashford on that pitch yesterday I thought he was attacking aggressive worked hard he looks like a threat every time he gets the ball and that's like what we want to see Marcus like Saka was a bit quiet for Saka don't you think?
26A bit quiet He has been a bit quiet towards the end of the season but he had an injury didn't he? I just think I think with Marcus I think he's he's our closest thing to them French forwards do you know what I mean? He's the one who can do something you think wow Yeah but then you've also got Bellingham who always for some reason He's better deeper though we said that but for a young lad he's 22 and this is his second tournament this is the second tournament that he's actually grabbed all by the scruff of the neck and he's done it again last night scores the goal sets Kane up plays deeper you nailed it you said he's not a 10 he's definitely not a 10 but the way he plays an 8 and he's got someone playing high up with him he takes a bit of a man away from him it works better especially when you're playing as a team like Norte Shepeta Panama but it's literally they're not going to go and beat us with the ball so why don't we go and just keep the ball keep it, keep it and with the Anderson sitting as a six I think it suited us better that game you can't play two sitting players against teams that have never got any possession so which one would you play then Rice or Anderson well the next game next game I'd play Rice definitely leave Anderson out leave Anderson out even though 120 million pound footballer left out even though I think he's been brilliant and I think he's a top top top player and that's obviously why City have gone and paid so much for him I just think you can't leave Rice out but I don't think you leave him out.
46He's one of them players you still don't leave out, and if he has got to sit a bit deeper and be that more of a six player with two up the top... I think that's his best position anyway. I do. But you don't need both of them. For a game like Congo, you don't want to be disrespectful, but you play as many attackers as you can. Is there a chance he could play in right-back, Declan Rice? I don't see that. I think he did it for Arsenal a couple of times, didn't he? It didn't go down too well. Right-back's a big problem for him now. You're playing in right-back, you're missing a massive player in midfield who's definitely part of that leadership group in that club, sorry, in that team.
19Do you know what, thinking about it, when we said Bellingham wasn't a 10, he weren't really in the game, Morgan Rodgers wasn't in the game, was he a 10 last night? No, no. So is it more what's behind you? Because sometimes you have to be a riser, are they looking for that player enough, do you know what I mean, for that number 10? I do think that Rodgers didn't play well, didn't get much of the ball, was a bit quiet. I wouldn't say he didn't play well, he just didn't get a ball. But he takes attention of somebody, he's moving players about he runs through he played a lovely ball through for McQuaid in the second half and Kiefer come out and made a good save I do think he takes a bit of attention away from Bellingham when he plays in there and look Congo is a different game to what the next one will be like if he played Mexico or the next one is going to be Brazil potentially and then Argentina now you are then going to have to play two sitting the way we play you have to against these teams but in these what I would call lesser countries we can't play with two sitting midfielders it's impossible it just doesn't sit right do you think it's much changed since Southgate's time I don't think we'll know that till we get to the latter stage if we get to the semi-final final I think that was Gareth did brilliant didn't he to get him all the way there until then semis and finals finals as he did two finals on the track was it and fell short now we won't know till we get to a final again what Tuchel brings to it I suppose we'll just have to wait and see but I think Bellingham in that deeper role especially he needs to see the game in front of him do you know what I mean with his back to play it's just not it's hard playing he's brilliant at arriving in the box at the right time as he's shown last night yeah I think it is hard playing even when you're playing on a small side of the game in training you're not used to playing when you're back to play it's a lot more a different game and I think you spoke about a while ago with number 10s a shortage of the the old traditional number 10s that we know there's not many of them about now and you look around and it might be changing that number 10 role might be changing it might be well you're folding his ideal number 10 he just wasn't himself towards the end of the season I think Cole Palmer could do it as well the two players he's left out who's left from Forrest Gibbs White Gibbs White yeah he plays a little I suppose he's a little bit like Morgan Rodgers and Bellingham more innit but he hasn't selected that type of player well what were thinking on Cobby Mayne well he's just not getting a sniff well I was thinking that and again that's a good game for him last night you think about getting minutes into players that might come on in certain games and change games Cobby's one of them players he's proved it over the listen he didn't have the great start to last season he come good towards the end we know the kind of players we know him quite well or very well he's a player that you could bring on to create a few chances in the last 20 minutes of games but if you're sat on a bench as you know sometimes you just need some rhythm you've got no rhythm but for me what do you think about leaving him on the bench and bringing in Henderson I don't understand what they're getting from that at all the game's won it's as though we're putting Henderson on to give him another cap now he's been an amazing player Jordan Henderson don't get me wrong a fantastic player great servant to the country he's got loads of caps but surely to God you're thinking right if we're playing against them we've got to break down Congo we don't know what they're going to come out how it's like we've got to break them down who's going to break them down give Cobby a bit of time give Cobby a bit of time and other players a bit of time it just it baffles me that I just don't I don't get it and when I'm looking at it from afar I'm going why is this and we know Cobby's not the kind of kid that's going to upset the apple cart he's not going to be upset in training so I don't understand it I just do not understand that Sometimes the managers don't fancy it It looks like that doesn't it But when you try to break the line which we're going to have to Yeah He's the one player that I think that you know you're talking about you spoke to the week about last week about the lack of a Foden or a Palmer Now that's quite glaringly obvious now isn't it that's a shortage for us whether we like it or not he's not picked them but he has got a coming menu sat on the bench you can do that He can play that 10 He can play that little burst through from the last bit of the line break the lines It just doesn't doesn't seem to yeah I think it has to be a straight pick between I know we've said this before between Rice and Anderson I'd probably just go for Hanson for that fact that he'll pass the ball forward you think about Arsenal with Declan Rice look he's a great player great leader I get all that and you'd rather have him in your team and probably not in your team at times but Arsenal didn't play great football either did they he couldn't get Odegaard into the game so maybe that's transferred a bit to England I think Anderson would do that and like you said Kobe Miner there's so many midfield players now they don't progress the game through the thirds of the pitch so they just don't they're happy to do their own little roll nice little pass and control games at times but there's no patterns of play I'm not seeing anybody whip a ball into into your forward players it's not it's just a little bit stop start for me it's a little bit messy but like I said earlier they've got match winners they've got three or four across that front line who can win you a game and Kane with Bellingham Kane always scores Kane, Rashford Saka's still not quite there but I've given him more game time than there's he will come won't he he's obviously got Watkins on the bench Ivan Tone I just we haven't seen a team that's going to win the World Cup yet but we might do and they might do it in a different way what do you think again Paddy no quiet as usual can't shut him up a bit of peace and quiet today he's got a spray tan there he's got a bit of an orange tint to it what's with the Fred Perry t-shirt as well I don't know probably another sponsorship but the good news top the group what more can you do really it reminds you you're thinking we've got to get to the World Cup they did that we've got to top the group they did that and basically done it in not the best way England got carried away English fans like we all do get carried away after the first game lower than a snake's belly second game looking like it was going to be another boring game in the first half and then they come and win the game and like you say top of the group so they've done the job haven't they on to the next one Yeah they have and do you know what it wasn't an easy group to win I think the Croatia guy and a good team and Panama weren't bad either it's not the Panama that we saw in Qatar If that goal had gone in the first couple of minutes the shot they had it's a total different story but yeah what they've done they've gone and topped the group and they've got the nation behind them now and you know what it's like when a tournament comes everyone gets the they've had one good half of football really then against Croatia in the second half the rest of it's still a little bit bity it needs to come together but have you watched much of anybody else because we're so focused on England looking at that I've only really seen snippets I'm not sat and watched a game of the same team other than England have you enjoyed it?
54I never do enjoy the start of any tournament I think it doesn't really go into the last 16th I normally love the World Cup because of the times of games you're watching three games a day it's brilliant yeah but the times you can't get it What time is 2 o 'clock, 5 in the morning? I'm missing half the game. What time is the Congo game on? 5 o 'clock Wednesday. 5 o 'clock. 5 o 'clock Wednesday. That's a good time to watch a game. The next round is 1 o 'clock in the morning on a Monday morning. 1 o 'clock? Yeah, 1 o 'clock in the morning. And that's the one that could potentially be in Mexico City.
20Yeah, Mexico or Ecuador, is it? Yeah. Yeah, I think so. In Mexico City though, yeah? Yeah. Going back to the other teams, France and Argentina, surprisingly. Or not surprised. I actually think Argentina look better than they did when they won it they look stronger they look better Messi's just a freak Messi's unbelievable six goals in three games it's just fucking it's ridiculous isn't it 39 years of age I was 38 nearly 39 it's absolutely ridiculous what he's doing they're frightening I watched France like I was saying the other day and I'm just looking I'm thinking the pace that they've got and when you watch England you think we've got a really good team but we might struggle at the back and Gaye's come back into the team I think he's been man of the match for two games he's been really but we'd not come up against anything like that I mean you come up against that that is a total different story you're looking thinking right well this could be fucking anything so it could be for us it could be Congo hopefully you'd like to think we'd get through that it won't be as easy as everyone thinks but we'll try to get through with that Congo surprised me how many Premier League players have we seen no I didn't I don't understand it I didn't realise it until I think they've got Fischer from Newcastle they've got Wan-Bissaka Matsuaka who's the left back at West Ham alright yeah he's a good player you've got somebody else who else have you got oh two and Zaber excel to base even though from Rochdale actually yeah he's playing for the high Congo you know and then potentially Mexico we'll see it could be that then it could be Brazil ooh Brazil got a tough game on Japan Japan Japan could be Brazil yeah and then could be I'd seen it's any final and then Argentina then Spain that's potentially obviously if this Have you seen the last 16 now Spain could play Portugal Could they?
03I mean I think the World Cup champion Euro championships they get going the last 16 I do I just think We've never had this round before have we 32 What's that all about? Do you know what? It's been like it's been on for about a year It feels like it's been on for ages There's still three weeks left How many teams dropped out? Is it 16 teams? 16 teams dropped out so we've been going what three weeks now no we've been going two weeks it's three weeks left two months so we've been going for two weeks still three weeks left of it and so for two weeks we basically got rid of 16 teams now we could being disrespectful to the smaller nations you could have wrote ten names down both of us at the start of it that were going to go out so really we've been two weeks for six teams going out it's crazy and like literally yeah so last 32 I was thinking next one's last 16 it's crazy talking about teams going out Scotland yeah big disappointment again aren't they do you know what when you say big disappointment I think it's hard for a nation like that to get to as it's been proven but I suppose when we were growing up they were brilliant Scottish players weren't they you think of your Darglishers your Sooners your Gordon Strachan they've just not got that they haven't got that talent anymore they just haven't well Scott's the only big player really isn't he Scott McTominay he's the only big player they've got McGinn I suppose but again they've really disappointed at the tournament do you know something it's just how the media portray things with the fans it's more like a holiday for them I'm not being disrespectful there it is because I looked at the score the results of the day were going out and it was like well they won one game against Haiti do you know what I mean it's not and that was the big downfall because they needed to beat them 2 or 3-0 to qualify if they beat them 3-0 then they got through and it's crazy when all this looking at results and see how they get through and he's going to finish top eight three points draw and it's all changing you dropping you dropping out and then steve clark obviously dropped stands down yeah um you don't just sign the contract as well i think he's probably done the right thing then he got a bit of stick for his i think it was his interview after one of the games where it didn't come across very well he don't come across very well he's very a bit like me he's a bit dower and a bit quiet and bit like you yeah but yeah no surprise who does that job now don't know I want to have a clue who would do that job but what kind of person we go I don't know I can't much any big minds attacking it because I think some of the jobs now in particularly in championship and Premier League mmm they're on so much money it's on true I don't imagine a Scottish FA can go and afford no you think it's a really thinking David Moyes and stuff but it's even coming Is he an uppercut manager?
47Or someone who's really at the end of the game and thinking, I've never managed the national team or what I'll do it. And I don't know who that could be. No, there's just nobody coming to mind who you think would be obvious for it. I think Darren Fletcher got mentioned, didn't it? But I think it's too early for him. I think Darren Fletcher's got under 18. I think he probably wants to be a manager at some point. Oh, he wants to be, yeah. I think you've got to go and manage your men's football before you go into your national team manager. Yeah, yeah. I can't see that happening. But yeah, it's a tricky one.
11no idea. There's the part of me that everyone sees. I'm Howie Mandel, the comedian. Apparently, I know what funny is. Funny bought me a house, but I also know what isn't funny. OCD. And chaps, have we got a player on this one? we're talking about Paul and Nicky's old team mate Portuguese Adonis Cristiano Ronaldo it's safe to say he's definitely built different now you lads know him more know him more than the rest of us obviously from your time at United what makes him built different from everyone else I think Scaldi's got more of an insight than me I was with him for probably two years so I can just talk about him when he first comes to the football club he's a young boy you know straight out of portugal didn't really understand the football club but one thing about him he was really train crazy like train start in the morning he'd be there in the afternoon he'd be out there taking free kicks non-stop i know that sounds like a a myth but it's true he was there hours and hours and hours on even he was in the gym after it four it was four or five six o 'clock sometimes you'd be there he'd still be there is he on his own doing that or does he have like a little click of group there was him there was um i know it's a bit different a bit older but when I was there it was him Jemba Jemba there was two or three young lads that all come at the same time and obviously they're not going home to nobody they've got no families with them so it was just purely a training environment where it was big football gym even playing table tennis I remember playing table tennis for hours on end so he's obsessed with the training complex and if you look at him now the way he's lived his life and what he's doing even at his age now playing the World Cup and stuff it just reflects the way he lives it's phenomenal we all thought we were professional and you had to be of course you but he was a different level as Nicky said he's in at 8 o 'clock in the morning even when he was like that young even when he was young he was having his healthy breakfast he was going in the gym before he was training as Nicky said he was outside all the time after training practising practising he used to actually remember he used to have the weights on his ankles when he trained just to because he was skinny yeah he was there was nothing to him when he first came and he was getting knocked off the ball all the time and then all of a sudden his physique I've seen pictures of him this morning actually at 41 years of age.
27It's ridiculous, honestly. But it's no fluke. No, no. And that's why he's playing at 41 years of age. And one of the biggest part of training, which no one really gets on to, they all think of it as a gym, it's all about diet, what you put in the engine. And obviously one of the reasons he's able to look so good and play at 41 and in a World Cup, he has a strict healthy diet, which amazes me because when you think about him joining United, you lads hold down the chippy every two minutes what did he ever sort of if you were you know rocked up with a fish and chips or something that you used to have and a bit of pizza would he have it or was he even back then going no I think he did his stuff after the games like the pizza and stuff yeah of course he would he wasn't that strict but I think he had his own chef and everything from being a young kid everything I say everything was about his football career he's still going now you're talking 20 years going he's still exactly the same now look fish and chip we never took that stuff from the training yeah so he'd never really see that um but yeah look just a man so dedicated to yeah how he is healthily and how he performs on a pitch and look it's no fluke what he's done for 20 years it's ridiculous unbelievable now this is a controversial one apparently he tries to avoid sugar now would you have given up sweets and biscuits if it meant you could play in a World Cup in your 40s?
56Oh, that's a feral trade-off. I don't think I could. I'm not really into that kind of sugary chocolate stuff anyway, but it is part of most of the food that you eat, isn't it? I mean, touching back on what he's like and the way he lives his life, he's obsessed with himself, his look, his persona, his personality, his way he looks when he walks out of a car or comes off a plane so all that ties into the bigger picture and and to be able to do what he does i'm pretty sure he does have a bit of sugar somewhere along maybe not now but definitely when he was 28 20 you don't know about it 100 % sugar and things you don't know about exactly so literally i mean if you tie into all what he does eating the way he lives the way he recovers i believe he's got his own spa recovery spa in his house and stuff he is just an absolute machine do you know when you look at like all the things about what you two were saying about how he was training when he was young, going out on his own after training, doing more training, his own chef, no sugar.
52He even says part of his longevity is down to his sleep. Apparently, he's got strict bedtime routine. He has to sleep in the fetal position, right? Now, when I look at all these things, sometimes I think, have a day off. Just have a day off. Cheer up. Yeah, just have it. Look at your bank account. Look at your career. it's not going to affect his game if he gives it one of them in bed is it then the fetal position I'm pretty sure he doesn't line the fetal position and stay there the whole night because it's impossible I turn around about 80 times in the night you've made me but I mean it is it's unbelievable what he does and obviously a lot of this will be exaggerated and it'll be but what he does do he has routines I mean I read one that he goes out in the morning and as soon as he wakes up and he goes straight out into the daylight and opens his eyes and just a lot of people and the sunny climate put sunglasses on he can't see in the morning but he's got beliefs and the career that he's had is up there with top two or three ever to have lived in my opinion we're making him sound like he's really boring he's one of the funniest lads you'll meet he loves to laugh he's laughing all the time he does impressions of people he's a really funny lad he makes you sound like he's a bit boring yeah because all this he's saying like what you just said about the sunlight getting it in there and then the barefoot which we talked about the week, didn't we?
13The bird foot on the... The earth thing. The earth thing on the grey. It does all that. And this one here. Now, this is a bit more like it. When you're one of the goats and you're living your dream and you're absolutely tilled up, two grand pyjamas, he wears. Where do you get them from? Yeah, where do you find a pair of 2 ,000-pound pyjamas? I can't wear anything in bed. I'm all natural. It gets too twisted. Too tangly. Yeah, absolutely. Absolutely. It all... It's only just twisting round. Yeah, yeah. I go, Starkers, firstly, because I think if anyone ever breaks into my house and they see that on their bed, they're going to go, let's get out of here, lads.
52We've bitten off more than we can chew. Somebody has. No, but I think what I do, I go, Starkers, I like to pop a pillar between my knees. Oh, I can do that sometimes. I have the blanket, one leg out, one leg in. I don't like knee on knee. No, I don't like skin on skin. going to get body temperature that warms you up. Yeah. I'm just on my back like that. I mean, you're like a vampire. I told you, that's what he is. He's a vampire. I am telling you now. I'm kidding. I always remember Giggsie saying about Koli, though. Just like that, didn't I? Just like that. Like Koli. All day. You say something, wake up and go, ah.
28Yeah. They used to share rooms together, didn't they? So Koli was just like that. Yeah. So when you get in bed, right, and you, like, because it says here, two pillows. he has 90 minutes for his bed, no phone, no nothing. yeah I can't do that you have a little doom scroll don't you so you get on the bed right Paul Scholes he's had a little look at his phone there he's put it down he's got on the bed he's absolutely stark as are you like this like that or are you giving it one of them probably like that shut up yeah but I'm not I'm not a very good sleeper I'm a terrible sleeper so I move I toss and turn everywhere I used to share a room with Scholesy right when we first started playing football because obviously you went it was an enormous roommate or he was the worst roommates you could ever have best mates but the worst roommates yeah he'd go to bed and want to go to sleep at seven o 'clock and i'd stay awake till dead late nine he'd put the tv on at like six in the morning like and i'll be it was a nightmare and i was back then i couldn't have a light or anything on in the bedroom yeah it was an absolute disaster yeah he said that he goes around the old room like covering the little lights on the telly little peephole and everything peephole what hotel was you in sorry what's it what's it called do you know what I've got into doing leaving curtains open that's meant to be good for you as well I'm telling you I wake up naturally with the sun that's a bit like the Ronaldo thing he's on to some at this lad that's like four in the morning though that was built different sponsored by midnight built for now not like the old school bookies it's quick to use simple to navigate with no messing about.
05Remember, you've got to be 18 or older and please gamble responsibly. Did you see Bielsa? Oh, he's a nutter. When he got knocked out. He's a nutter. Oh, he's crazy. I mean, he's snapping down the camera. Is he telling the cameraman to hurry up or something? Yeah, yeah. He's fucking nuts. And then apparently they had a private jet to go back to Uruguay from America, not too far, and they cancelled it and put them all on a normal commercial flight to punishment. I mean, it's brilliant. I like him. he's like him at Leeds I thought he was brilliant at Leeds he's good value he didn't speak great English so it's hard to understand but his mannerisms he's a bit like a Brian Clough the way he can just go mad but he's good value I remember him being 2002 manager of Argentina when we played so he's had some career when you think about it all the time he's been manager people look up to him massively don't they he's a mentor for so many coaches he's good value he's off I'd like and you don't mind that you don't mind that no dear yes I speak about punishments for the Uruguayans what do we remember anyway got I don't really remember I was remembering sometimes you thought you'd have a Sunday off remember you thinking I'm gonna have a Sunday off like we're talking before about our perfect Sunday day you think you're gonna have a day off you've chill out with the kids a bite to eat and the mind you'd snap and say you're in tomorrow at nine o 'clock that's about the only thing we got can't remember too much more I think sometimes we have come in early didn't we like a seven o 'clock start or something just sitting in the dressing room for two hours I also remember as well when he'd give you a night out on pre-season tour and someone got in late and brought the curfew and then he'd run you in the morning with a hangover I remember Steve McLaren in Malta in Malta remember that I remember Mazur Steve McLaren Mazur was spewing up forward roll stand up run forward roll and remember Mazur Mazur ran sideways like that right into the audience there was a load of crowd watching us wasn't there for about 20 or 30 everyone was dizzy wasn't there oh it was horrendous but no punishments I don't like punishments because you don't want to lose games I'm sure them Uruguayan lads would not be expecting or wanting to lose a World Cup game and not go home no no and the Kate Verde what do you think of them I mean three I haven't seen an awful lot three draws they've had Kate Verde three draws I think got them through it's over the big story he was a goalkeeper wasn't it the first game yeah like I said I think they played two or five in the morning so I haven't seen an awful lot of them Argentina they've got did you see what happened with him his mum no no he went to bed after that game apparently he had about 80 ,000 followers on Instagram we've all cut 15 million Instagram followers all for the game but yeah that's the stories you want don't you yeah and you see the fans and stuff and you're thinking who've they got in the next game Argentina Argentina in the next game they're out aren't they yeah but what a journey that is Messi winning the golden boot isn't it yeah you won't be surprised if he scores that trick again against them would you no and that would be nine goals for sure that's enough but the big players have stepped up you've seen the other ones Harland four goals yeah Vinny Junior four goals somebody else Mbappe Mbappe four goals Dembele three goals What's Kane got?
04Cristiano's only got two Kane's got three Bellingham two Bellingham two so all the big boys have shown up like that and that's what you want from a World Cup you want that from the World Cup but I also love about World Cups and Championships it's the one that you've never really heard of and they've become a superstar I always remember Scalacci Scalacci Italian 90 Best World Cup back yeah World Cup well there's a few was it Carol Pobosky that might have been Euros there's Euros in England there's always one of them that comes soon somebody signs and then really does that well to be fair and you see Ugarte 9 months out cruciate sad isn't it poor lad yeah I feel for him look he was probably going to get moved on by United I know he wanted to get some fresh blood in there but now he's unfortunately he's got 89 months out which is nothing worse I can imagine than getting an injury I remember when we was in Euros Portugal I did my meniscus popped my meniscus before the France game and the warm up and I knew I was going to Newcastle so I'm thinking that's it I'm going to be sat I thought it was my cruciate actually I was going to be prepared for the scan and he ended up staying at the tournament on my crutches for a whole bloody time I don't remember that I don't remember it cheers mate looking after me I don't remember that but literally it's like it is for him now I feel for him he's had a bad year he's thinking I'm pretty sure he'll be thinking I'm moving on I'm going to start my career again you can imagine going maybe even going with Amarin again back with Amarin you never know ACMLM yeah but literally now fucking nine months cruciate they were talking as well they heard that they're trying to get some money off FIFA as well aren't they United but I think that's capped is it capped at seven million or something I don't know capped at seven million I think well if you could get seven million you're going to get that but I think they don't get it for the first three months or something like that I don't know how it works but basically they get compensation but so they should do you know if you imagine many years ago before that come in if you're if you're basically bought a car and you borrow it somebody and they smash it you've got a broken car it's like the amount of money they pay these international players and what was it 10 years ago 20 years ago actually he was playing and you go in how many times did you get injured or Bex got injured or it's just crazy isn't it just thinking about Paddy there and goalkeepers I think they've been poor in the World Cup other than the Cape Verde one even though you've seen Neuer the other night now look he's 40-41 is that how old he is now at Neuer now and he retired didn't he did he and he's come back but he's looking yeah age catch you were talking about that the other day weren't me about Ronaldo and stuff but I mean there's no one I reckon he'd be saying he'd play he'd get a game now Paddy two minutes Paddy two minutes I can't believe they retired him as well it's tight wasn't it really no he should have put some gloves on him or something like that put some gloves he might have saved probably more chance of saving something like that than in any game Terrible Tevez get Tevez in I can't be doing a Tevez story again that's a thing anyway Tevez's old team City just bought Elliot Anderson 116 million now for me with values on players just put it to one side now because it's gone nonsense anyone who's gone over 30 million quid is too much money in my eyes no you look at the players we played with years ago I mean he is a top top player Anderson I like him I'd love him to have gone back to Man United I think he's everything that we need I think he can get about the pitch I think he closes down well on the ball he's great he can pass the ball he can create he's got a bit of everything he reminds me very much of a young Michael Carrick when Michael first comes to United?
27Yeah, I'd say that. Yeah. I'd probably say Michael was still a better player. Oh, yeah. I think a better passer on the ball, Michael. But Elliot, come on. He's a good player in that City team. You'd like to think he'd suit. City played, well, England played pretty much like City. They have so much possession of the ball. The big worry for me, does he progress the game enough? Do you know what I mean? Does he link your team? does he link with that number 10 who will it be it'll be a fault he'll not be jerking out so he's going to be playing with better players of course he is on the price for it's in our position isn't it you think 115 million someone said 130 million it might go to with Adon's and all that stuff I just like you said the money is irrelevant the price tag is irrelevant but for that type of player I want more do you know what I mean I want I want a Frank Lampard I want a Steven Gerrard who's going to get you 10 to 15 goals but plays that position as well I think they've they've gone out of the game I don't think you have to do much as a midfield player anymore when we were playing midfield you had to do everything you had to defend but you also had to try and score goals and try and make goals How many times how many years did you play when you played with three in midfield?
44Do you remember at the end of your career that? Yeah it wasn't very often to be honest it was only it was only really I'd say big games I'd say big games big European games and I hated it I hated playing three in midfield now look you know I couldn't run but I preferred playing in two in midfield you knew your job I knew exactly what to do it reminds me very much this kind of metaphor you're talking about there it's a bit like the corner kicks no man to man marking no zonal marking when you're playing in a two in midfield you know who you're playing against and if he runs off you it's your fault you know you're playing against who you're playing with yeah and if he beats you in a tackle he beats you he beats you running he beats you and it's just a one-on-one duel and I always remember the mind saying that if there's six or seven of you in a one-on-one duel and you win your duels you're going to win the game you all win them but yeah in a three for me I don't think I ever remember playing in a three I think I obviously did I played with you Keane I hated it Varon it was just a bit for me you became like a like just playing football for no reason and that wasn't my there's a lot of that now it wasn't us there's loads of that now I'm not saying it's what Elliot Anderson does it's what Declan Rice does.
52Do you reckon the football will ever go full circle and go back to a two in midfield? Or do you think people are too scared to get all the run? Atletico Madrid still do, don't they? Diego Simeone, he is obsessed with 4-4-2, which is brilliant, isn't that? But that's the kind of player he was as well, wasn't he? He was a one-on-one warrior. When we watch Arsenal, we say we watch Salford now, we played 3-5-2 for a long time last year and we switched to a four. When you're watching the three, we don't really know how it works, because we've never been coached that way. and when you see a 4-4-2 you almost think bloody hell yeah it's just everything's clear do you know what I mean and it's man you pass the ball forward when you're in a three you only have one centre forward really and then all the link stops for me do you know what worries me about that is when you talk about even in academy football we was always taught if you can play in a two it's easier to go to a three so you played as a two all your life all your career from 12 all the way up I did and he went to a three even though you didn't like it it was easy I worry for these young players now that are brought up in a three playing in a three you see it up and down the country in academies you see it all over the country you're playing in a three and if ever you go back to a two so you'll come across a coach one day where it'll change it's a wheel all the techniques and the tactical stuff will change how are they going to cope in a two I don't think they ever could what I feel with a three in midfield you become safe everything's a little five it's like Fanny funny football and yeah I mean you just become a little nice possession and you get people to pull you out the shit because there's three years in that I just I really don't like I can like I said before in it for midfield player like Kaisido these type of players they don't have to do a lot they go through games and they might don't know when a few tackles a pass a ball sideways they don't really get involved enough and these players go for 115 million not a keen or a Gerrard so all right here we go here we go give me some names you can argue some names you give us a price tag on modern-day price tag David Beckham David Beckham well I felt like Anderson's going from 150 million you talk 150 million you've got even with commercial rights I'm saying 300 350 that's a car it's unbelievable 300 million make that back in a year in commercial rights so we're going 150 for Bex purely on football commercially double that Keene again Kai Seed 120 million people say people probably say he's a Roy Keane but he isn't he's not even close that would be like 200 million I think not even close no it's not absolutely not close as a leader doing everything which a midfield player should do scoring goals scoring goals making goals getting your team playing coaching the team on the pitch does everything 200 million 200 million Gary Neville and I think Nev is probably the best right back I think him and Dennis best right back in the Premier League history if England had Gary Neville now bloody hell yeah defensively I think bloody hell Gary Neville for a right back fucking hell What did you know Trent didn't go for anything did it?
12It's totally different Trent and Neva aren't they? I think that if you got the... Well Gary was all around. If you got a balance of Neva and Trent you've got the perfect right back. Gary did everything did he? He could defend at a back post, he went forward, brilliant, passes, even passes in, a long throw. And everything goes as a right back. But what do you pay for him? What's a right back gone for? How can I compare it to? £60 million,£70 million. I'd say yeah, I'd probably even say more than that. I think Thomas Tuchel would pay a bit more than that for Gary Neville alright we'll move on from now mate Neff 100 million I'm going to go 100 100 million Jesus that's the way the world's gone isn't it no it is it's fucking nuts not for a full back can't have a full back it's fucking nuts it doesn't matter Steven Gerrard one of my favourite players Premier League history everyone one of everyone's favourite players isn't it the talent Steven Gerrard again a midfielder he does stuff same as Keane at 200 million yeah gotta be yeah gotta be yeah goal scorer Ian Wright yeah 150 ooh I'd go a bit more would you yeah goal scorer in this course goals your favourite player who's not on here but I'll put it out there Van Nistelrooy Orood 200 200 180 no I'll go Wrighty 150 right I'm just gonna give a few names now I'm gonna go straight to the two goats the two goats Ronaldo Messi if they were in their pump now both 27 years of age what are they going for we've got to compare everything to Declan Rice and Anderson haven't we you're talking 500 million is that possible is that half a billion half a billion yeah I mean even that's cheap it's cheap you know if you've got some of these big Saudi owners who have got more money than cents it's nothing to them to have someone I mean Messi and Ronaldo Ronaldo never stops scoring goals would you make absolute machine would you make one of them worth more than the other one no do you know something why not I just don't think you can split them I think they're totally different I mean Ronaldo is a physical specimen you know what he's like machine goal scorer do everything free kicks everything there's nothing he can't do great unbelievable in the air is he better than Messi no flip it Messi's a genius they're probably the best natural football I've ever seen is he better than Ronaldo no that's why I can't split them two up yeah you can it's ridiculous you probably get carried away now look if Ronaldo scored six goals and Messi two you'd probably be going towards him wouldn't you but what about a team of both of them so you had 11 Messis against 11 Ronaldo who wins that Jesus I'd say it'd be the 11 Messis draw the 11 Messis football wise yeah Messi's team would out football then Ronaldo's outpowering Cristiano would be outpowering 5-0 probably outshoot him score him 5-0 5-0 that'll be fun and Paddy mate he'd be goal for both teams there'd be loads of goals Paddy looks well there actually missing Paddy yeah I'm missing him I'm missing his charisma his hair looks better on there the camera definitely he's put a bit of sharpie on there a bit of sharpie on top a bit of sharpie on top yeah And we're live from the living room as Doug eyes up the matchday spread.
39He's reaching for the Buffalo wing. Perfect. Hang on, what's this? Oh, he's going for a can of Pepsi too. Incredible. What a finish. Sensational combination. Look at the delight on his face. There's no doubt about it. It just tastes better. Matchdays deserve Pepsi. Food deserves Pepsi. Grab a pack of Pepsi Zero Sugar for today's match. It's poetry in motion.
32complete terms and conditions. Right, Scolesy, this week, that prize guy has a huge draw that's making someone a millionaire for just 30p. Brilliant. Head over to thatprizeguy.co.uk and enter the draw for just 30p. Okay, Scolesy, if you could pick one of your former England teammates to drop into this Tomlitz-Tuchel squad to get us to win that World Cup, who would it be? I think I'd like to have three or four if I could. But you've got to choose one. Only one? Only one. I give you two two yeah the two positions I'd change probably right back and central midfield all right I'd go for Gary Neville oh is that because of the injuries orange in general no internal I think it's best right well we've had for years well can't remember about right but it's most of Paul Parker I suppose going back a long time Kyle Walker was brilliant as well wasn't he but I think Gary just for his all round ability really and Paul Gascoigne I think they're missing that magic in the middle of the pitch and he'd bring it what a player he was he was unbelievable we got him like towards the end of his career he was still unbelievable he was unbelievable that's very good what about you?
53yeah because of the injuries I'd go over right back so I'd probably go Gary as well it sounds like we're all licking Neb's backside a bit of love to Gary to that it's a bit off £100 million right back I didn't say that I said£60 you got carried away with yourself a little bit but I would go right back so I'd either go Gary or Trent which is a real contentious scene so they didn't even take Trent that's a massive mistake I think he's regretting that now 100 % he won't ever say it but he's got to be regretting that now I'd go I'm going to go Trent just to change up a little bit so we're not sat there going oh you Man United lot you're always picking your own lot I think we need a right back because obviously the injuries and I go Trent and I didn't think about Gaza for one minute until you just said it so I'm not going to do the same as you I go with Gerrard I'm right backs yeah Thomas Tuchel you can't be surprised injuries they're obviously reach James and liverment or the both the engine you've is surprised reach it he's the only person in the world who surprised about Reece but Jamie injured yeah well the weird one with that is he's picked them two and I think they're both great players by the way I love Reece James he's a brilliant player but he said in the build up to the World Cup that he couldn't pick Luke Shaw because of his injury record now Luke Shaw played something like 33 games 34 games probably the most games he's ever played last year 30 odd games plus games for Man United and played well and then they go and pick to someone who's been in yeah it's crazy but yeah so I'd be going Trent and then I'd go with Gerrard for his drive his energy yeah his goal scoring threat he's not the 10 Gazza that you're suggesting and I would have gone with Gazza if I thought I just think his style of play needs a bit of something that England team a bit of entertainment third we go on down the line it'll come to more to fruition give Steven a lot of love today I think he's brilliant unbelievable player I used to 8 playing against him hard work and Scoles okay then so which player from this squad now because you've said it many a time there's a lot of talent in this squad Tuchel which player will you take out of this squad now and put it into the 2002 World Cup squad to have got us over the line or to get us at least to the final instead of getting knocked out of the quarters against a phenomenal Brazil team that's 10 times better than the Brazil team that's there now this might be controversial but we always struggle on the left hand side didn't we I'd probably be Marcus into it we've got Bellingham Kane obviously brilliant players but I think coming into that squad if we had someone like a Marcus I think it would have been different yeah it's good shout I mean I don't know because if you look at Kane we had Michael also I mean I thought was a brilliant brilliant yeah yeah Kane instead of Emily Lesky or something like that maybe but Kane yeah Kane dropped deeper like he's been doing yeah I'd say Harry Kane.
51Fair enough, you can't argue with that. And remember, get yourself over to thatprizeguide.co.uk for the chance to become a millionaire for just 30p. I've got to be honest with you but thanks for all putting these questions in some of them were a bit we're a bit close to the bone so we took a few out but we're going to get asked now from our Liverpool fan producer Chris shock come on Chris first question from me who's your favourite Liverpool player of all time my favourite Liverpool player of all time would have to be Kevin Keegan I mean Gerrard's quite close to there because I think he was an unbelievable midfielder but I love Kevin Keegan I just love these dudes how can you remember Kevin Keegan 50 years ago Patrick Keegan kid boots on my first football boots of Patrick that's weird because the player I'm I love Robbie Fowler yeah oh yeah yeah yeah yeah just something that sticks about the boots I used to have the Puma Dagleish Puma Dagleish silver and they did a Puma Dagleish gold my mom actually took me for a pair of football boots they had a Dale's yeah Middleton yeah the shittiest boots they do a four quid yeah the fucking shittiest boots with the with a piece of plastic so you just it's held up the worst boots ever went on me does it you can't fucking wear them it's all me it's a tent sports at Middleton about some darkly silver I loved them I had them on the side of my bed just looking at my I got my Patrick Keegan kids from God and indoor market Patrick indoor market and go and yeah so I went and I look like you say cleaned them like my kids now they don't clean the boots I forget my gas took him in shower clean him put a paper in those the best way to do when I go and take him in the shower yeah and he got signs up only everywhere bring your boots and your job's worse yeah you can clean the showers yeah so I'm going Keegan this next question is from Josh he says what's the best piece of advice that Sir Alex Ferguson ever gave you be yourself I think yeah it didn't want you to be something you couldn't be or you can't be yeah it was always about expressing yourself it was something and he always said before a game, express yourself, express yourself and that's something that I was talking about.
18No, it's good that. I mean, for me, it was like, I was always a bit, I was never as talented as you or Bex or Giggs, talent-wise, pure talent, I wasn't, I wasn't, and I don't, obviously, I don't mind saying it, I wasn't. I was more of a box-to-box running around, but I got to a point where I started trying to do things that I was incapable of doing, basically. You used to go mad at you for stuff like that. Yeah, you used to go fucking mad at me. I remember he pulled me in and said to me once don't don't be embarrassed about having work ethic and working out it's the best skill it's the hardest skill and the best skill to have so be the hardest work on the pitch and you'll get a career and that was as simple as that really I always remember he used to bollock you and he used to run on the ball Nicky stop running on the fucking ball and I knew when you started running I thought he's going to get a fucking ball he's fucked but no it's little things like that little genius bits no we used to always think was very very headstrong but it stood him in good stead in the end remember Bex he was Hollywood passes so Bex used to fucking 40 yard passes all over the pitch and he was only like that we all was and he didn't have the power to reach the other side of the pitch and he fucking get bullets off Eric Harrison Beckham Hollywood passes but he kept doing it didn't he he kept doing it and you know ended up being one of the best long range passes in the game yeah I remember something else as well with Bex was you there when Bex and Teddy there of course you were yeah he said to the gaffer said to him that he just passed the ball to teddy all the time yeah seems like favorite system stop passing you're just gonna pass it to teddy because they were cockneys well look do it go on together of course you do sometimes you have connections like that but do something the manager got in his head sometimes and he couldn't get it out couldn't he had to tell him yeah yeah i spoke to him the day on the phone actually oh was he all right yeah two days ago i spoke on the phone for about 20 minutes talking about scotland and about the game and yeah he rang you before the play our final as well yeah yeah get out of the heat don't you too be standing in that sun you too be standing in that sun with your ginger hair it's looking red hot too fucking hot next one is from Pippi Pippi says moving on from eggs jacket potatoes are you sticking them in the oven air fryer or microwave depends how hungry you are microwave it's a lot quicker isn't it but the miles better in the oven wrapped in foil I don't think I've ever I don't think I've ever cooked in the air fryer never cooked it full stop one you've never cooked a jacket spud no I've had jacket spud I love jacket spud I've never had to cook one myself no I like the little spud vans I've had them in the ovens for like three or four hours perfect they're all mashed up with butter what would you have on top of it chilli and cheese I quite like tuna or beans cheese and beans cheese and beans or tuna tuna no cold tuna tuna and cheese not on a warm cold tuna on a warm no very nice no but I do love a jacket potato but I've never cooked one I don't know what I'm going to do I'm going to have a jacket potato tomorrow wrap it in foil one eater hour and a half perfect in the oven yeah what about the air fryer then because I've never known about the air fryer I don't know about the air fryer I don't know how long I'm going to take do you eat the skin yeah I don't eat the skin you see loads of butter salt and pepper white pepper yeah white pepper is always a must white pepper you never have black pepper shite that's all Italian that's crap white pepper no I don't eat the skin don't eat the skin it's been sat in load of horse shit for horse shit in soil for four or five months don't wash it no would you eat some off the floor now you're eating horse shit on your jackpot potato if there's a bacon boy on the floor I'm going to start having no but I'm going to give it a try I'm going to give it a try but no definitely don't eat the skin just wash the skin no just don't eat the skin scoop it all out skin no thanks skin's the nicest bit no next question is from Matt he asks who's the hardest Yapstam or Roy Keane well two very very hard men and I think it's a tricky question because it depends on what you mean by hard because physically you don't you don't want to come up against them two too often in training they were beasts I mean Yaps actual man-mounting tank quick strong Keane I wouldn't like to watch it before strong absolute beast it's one of them ones who's the best Messi or Ronaldo as I was saying before but you couldn't pick it.
34You couldn't pick who the hardest, one of them two. Tackle, that's a 50-50 that you do not want to be the ball. Put it that way. You don't want to be the ball. No, you don't. What was I going to say then? When you say hardest, right, they are both hard as nails, but in different, the different characters. Yeah, yeah. Like, Yapp is such a nice man. I'm not saying Roy's not nice, but Roy could call us a fight in an empty house, could I? Yeah, in a mirror. Call us a fight in a mirror, Roy. Yeah, exactly, yeah. and Yap wasn't like that was it? it'd be a good battle I remember seeing Yap when he first signed did you ever see the one when he grabbed the lad by the neck?
09he was playing for Holland he had one lad by the neck and he's punching two others like that did he do that to Vieira as well? yeah he did it to Vieira yeah is it? oh he's hard Yap and it do you know it takes quite a lot to trigger Yap doesn't it as well? so once he's gone he's gone but the thing with Roy is if you beat him you'd have to kill him because he'd just keep coming back next day yeah I think you'd be like that as well me? yeah yeah no I don't I'm not really a fighter you give a few digs though aren't you no yeah you're not really for me yeah you have not for me yeah Lucas asks what would your death row meals be oh good question Sunday roast Sunday roast all day long yeah even a Sunday roast potato roasters I don't have mash on my Sunday roll what no what too much too much on a plate roast beef Yorkshire pudding roast potatoes carrots what's that what are they called what are they called broccoli no asparagus no the long orange stuff that's like carrots carrots swede swede long orange stuff swede what are they called swede you haven't met Christmas no you haven't met Christmas parsnip parsnip parsnip yeah and gravy and a bit of sausage a little bit of sausage you fucking mashed potato on it just too much sloppy mess mashed potato roast potatoes Yorkshire pudding sprouts Sprouts.
