2:51Paddy McGuinness:How was your week Paddy

2:52Nicky Butt:Alright actually Yeah I was filming up I was back on Inside the factory You do a lot of filming Don't you I do a lot of filming Yeah Outside This is filming Technically This to me is just I look forward to My Mondays Any voiceovers No voiceovers this week Did my radio show I wish I was out Where did you go for it Did you go to Manchester for it I do it in Salford Salford But it goes Everywhere around the world Radio 2 Around the world It's not about me Right Now this Result United Crystal Palace 2-1 We've been sort of Touching upon it Every other pod about Michael Carrick getting the job First nine games As a Premier League manager Including his spell as interim Is the joint best start by any manager in Premier League history.

3:49Nicky Butt:That's a fact and a half, isn't it?

3:52Paul Scholes:Yeah, unbelievable, isn't it? That's over two different spells, isn't it? Because he did it before. Two interim's, two interim's, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Look, it's unbelievable. He's doing great. As I say, you put yourself in the owner's shoes and whoever's choosing the next manager, he's putting real pressure on them. Of course he is.

4:08Paddy McGuinness:Yeah, I think it's first and foremost, what he's done is amazing at the club because it was in turmoil, whether you like it or not. and me and Scorsi had a bit of stick over the last few months about some of our comments and other pundits have as well that are friends of ours but you're just speaking what you think is the truth at the time and now it's total change and it's brilliant what they're doing I didn't think they were great yesterday the first half if I'm honest with you I thought Palace were by far the better team in the first 30-35 minutes but then they come into it and you take any bit of luck you can get in a football game and the sending off the penalty it certainly changes the game but what Michael's done is gone on to that winning streak and like Scaldi said I would do if it was a betting man I'd be putting money on Michael being the next full time manager

4:53Paul Scholes:I don't actually think they've been great the last three games if you go back to the West Ham game but sometimes when you're not great winning games it's got that even at Everton they weren't great at Everton

5:04Paddy McGuinness:but it's a great thing to have that in a winning game when you're not playing well and I know we're way off winning titles and stuff but that is a secret to having a successful team is not always going to play well you're not always going to get the right chances that come your way and fall to the right people but you have a team spirit and a drive that gets you wins when you're playing bad and they've been doing that and again, that can only be down to the actual atmosphere that Michael's brought to the building since he's come in

5:30Nicky Butt:Yeah, you're right, it's that winning when you're not playing well I think, right, they're not going to win the league this year or even next year maybe but getting those results when things aren't going well on the pitch are what make championship teams I think they're the ones where you go we've you know them ugly games

5:53Paul Scholes:well you look at who's gone for the league now with City and Arsenal they both won ugly this weekend that Leeds game

6:01Nicky Butt:I thought City at the end it's got a way they were hanging on

6:04Paul Scholes:they were getting away with it I think the point about Michael when you're at big clubs I think look what whoever's going to choose the new manager it's Jason Wilcox I don't know whoever they have to you might have to think a bit differently about employing a Man United manager because I don't really think you need the most technical coach technical tactical tactical coach because you're at a big club already these players are already good players they know what they're doing maybe they just they need a man manager more than anything if you look back to Sir Alex he was never a coach really was he?

6:44Paul Scholes:No. But he knew the players, he knew what players needed, he knew how to treat players, he made, when you were left out of a team he made you feel a million dollars and I'm thinking maybe Real Madrid would be like Carlo Ancelotti, Zidane. I don't think they're the most tactical, technical coaches, not obsessed with doing different things every day but more putting their arm around the people or saying knowing people and you see you see Amarim who you assume probably from looking on outside he's obsessed with tactics obsessed of a way we're playing and it didn't work you think of Real Madrid and Xabi Alonso again what he did at Leverkusen was brilliant tactically but the Real Madrid need somebody like that do them types of big clubs need that management type which look I don't know what Michael's coaching style is like but I wouldn't think he'd be massive on the coaching side of it but Michael's brilliant with people he's brilliant plays he hasn't got the experience yet but as a manager I can imagine imagine him being very good what he does do as

7:56Paddy McGuinness:well and that we talked about the big clubs you spoke about their schools they're more like institutions aren't they like a Real Madrid at Barcelona Liverpool and Man United yeah and I think you've got to be able to understand the football club and understand the DNA of the football club and what it means to the fans and all little dynamics of the football club that Michael will know because he's been there that long. Added to that is calm, added to that what Scully said you can imagine being a really good man management person, he's a people's person but listen how can anyone sit around now and say you can't give them the job.

8:28Nicky Butt:But just saying what you two have said in the past on this pod going back, were you talking about the man management side of things and making players feel good and what have you but you were both saying originally that's because he's interim you can do that you can be mates with players

8:45Paul Scholes:we've said this before we won't know how good he is unless he gets a job and you get to October November time there's no right answer here with this what's the big word that coaches use these are these so called super coaches they say philosophers everywhere they go don't they this is my philosophy clubs like Real Madrid clubs like Manchester clubs like Barcelona they have their own philosophers so that's not something they're looking for

9:09Nicky Butt:and we touched upon it again a couple of pods back I can't remember which one of you said it but when Michael was interim manager and we were saying let's see how it goes but it might have been you Nicky but you were saying there'll be already someone in place yeah well you think that so does that work now?

9:28Paddy McGuinness:they'll have a list they'll definitely 100 % have a list but I think what they've got to do is and no one could have foreseen what Michael's done if we're honest no one could no one I certainly didn't think to go and win that many games in a row so what he's done is unbelievable what he's done but a club should have targets in their mind a list of targets and every now and again they'll put a tick next to that and they'll put a cross next to it and they'll work down the list now for me I think the lads were saying before before we come on air was there's not that many other options who else are they going to go for there's nobody jumping out at me and going I honestly thought Tuchel would have done it then he signed a new deal so that's off the shelf now if you like so you're looking at what Michael's doing added to that who's available to come in it's not that many I mean people are talking about PSG what's it called PSG Enrique yeah I was talking about him coming over is he going to leave PSG where he's obviously comfortable there it's a lovely place to live they're winning the league every year they're getting to the last stage of the Champions League in certain years is he going to want to come and start a fresh challenge at Man United

10:31Paul Scholes:that's the type of culture I'm talking about the more you think about it they're the best coach in the world yeah of course they are but the Man United need that type of coach who's just going to be obsessed with tech now look I think Thomas Tuchel is probably one he might have the best of both he looks he looks like a character he looks like he might have a bit of both again you have to remember it's a very short time Michael's done this

10:55Paddy McGuinness:the thing with it as well

10:57Paul Scholes:the thing that happens though Nick you've still got to give him time until the end of the season before you make any decision because you lose one game at Man United it's a disaster nine games left all your feelings will change it's important now the thing with the

11:09Paddy McGuinness:club is who's going to pick it like the school said if it's jason or omar or both they've got hiding to nothing because if you look at the history of the football clubs since raleigh's left they went and got david moyer's a most experienced premier league manager after sir alex yeah that didn't work they then went and got big massive one like the biggest names in the world then he went back to an older kind of player who comes in and looks after the club and tries to be a custodian for the club at Solskjaer Ryan's had a dabble of it Michael's now having a go of it they don't know when I got supposedly one of the best technical coaches in Europe in Amarin you could argue none of them worked obviously obviously I think that's obviously 10 Hague as well I forgot about him but he was quite easy to forget about to be honest with you but literally Steve won't be if you look at I wasn't here it's alright so I didn't hear what Steve said but if you look at it they've tried everything they've tried everything they've gone for every single thing so why not we go with someone who just won and like Scully said you won't know until it gets near the end of the season but certainly there's no one jumping out other than Michael now and I keep contradicting myself because four weeks I'm going they've got to go for someone bigger than Michael but you can only take what Michael can't do anymore on what he's doing

12:24Paul Scholes:the question is has Michael got the experience I know it's a big question I know he's managing a championship but this is different can we see Michael winning the Premier League in Mania look I don't know yet and I think the biggest choice as we've just said is what type of manager will they look for will they look for this tactician or will they look for a person who's a man manager who looks after people well now Oli Gunnar was that I don't see him as a tactical I don't know I might be wrong but all these people who are my managers what do they always have next to them they always have a brilliant

13:02Nicky Butt:coach next to them yeah which might be Steve Holland Steve Holland yeah which Michael you

13:07Paul Scholes:think of our manager Steve McClaren he had Brian Kierdy had Jim Ryan Jim Ryan Mike Phelan who were all very good coaches they all really good coaches let's say the big thing the club have got decided do we want a master tactician which hasn't worked you probably put ten Hag in that Mourinho maybe Van Gaal definitely the fella who's just come in Amarim didn't quite work or and the question has to be look Ole Gunnar would be very good at that but did he have that real experience to go on and win a major trophy and the same questions will be asked to Michael now the perfect one out there when I say perfect Ancelotti's still out there I know he's coach of Brazil he's that perfect one for Manchester United where you think I'll make players feel an absolute million dollars and he's got the experience of winning stuff but the question is is he too old now that's the only thing is everybody else of that ilk with that more experience do you know the good question

14:08Paddy McGuinness:what Scully's saying is 100 % right but added on to that is what kind of manager do the club want because if you look remember what Amarin said I come here to manage the football club not just coach it now do the club want someone who's going to stay away from the signing I think he was wrong with that little one. Yeah, he was wrong, yeah. But did a club want to get somebody who's going to be involved in everything? So they're going to be running the football club, coaching the football club, picking the team, plus they'll be in the recruitment side of it. And I get it that every manager is going to have a little bit of a say, but how much of a say is the next manager going to have?

14:39Paddy McGuinness:Now, if they went for someone like an Angelotti, he would want a massive say in everything in that football club. A bit like an old-school manager like a Ferguson.

14:46Paul Scholes:I think your character or reputation probably dictates that, doesn't it?

14:49Paddy McGuinness:But with Michael, he might go, well, do you know something? I don't mind having a little say and if you're giving me an opinion in recruitment but I'll just concentrate on what goes on on the grass and the game match day I'm not saying he will say that that might suit the club more so that might be another bonus that Michael's going to be where he is now he's not that super elite manager because he's not got the experience at the minute I think he's brilliant in what he's doing and he did a good job he's doing an amazing job should I say but that might suit the powers that be more than somebody coming and dictating everything to them which they obviously don't want I think Man United

15:20Paul Scholes:they need sorry Paddy

15:21Paddy McGuinness:they need presence

15:22Paul Scholes:as a leader

15:24Nicky Butt:yeah but I was going to say he's the perfect manager and just not the person who's getting results like who's winning games yeah because you were saying about Ancelotti which again everyone knows Ancelotti he's one of the best of the best but if you've got a manager regardless of his experience if he's just winning every game is he not just yeah he's right he's there isn't he but who is that he seems like Michael Garrick at the minute oh he is at the minute

15:50Paul Scholes:This is a very short period of time. You've got to realise that Paddy Man United could lose next week and it'd be a disaster. Everyone changes their opinion again. That's just the way it's going to be. Or he could get the job and then lose the first three games of next season. And then it's like... That's football at League Two level. It doesn't matter. When you're losing games, everything's bad. What happens in the background, the training ground, everything else in the background, it's horrific, it's bad. And then you win a game, everything's great again and then problems go away.

16:21Nicky Butt:Even though it's a different league, do you not think his time at Middlesbrough has stood him in good stead? You can make your mistakes and you can learn things and you can do things differently. It's a great experience for him

16:32Paul Scholes:and it's a different experience for sports. There will be big expectations at Middlesbrough because he probably had a big budget. He probably had one of the biggest budgets in the league and some people will probably say he failed there with what he had but Manchester United is different. you have to judge a Manchester United manager or say look to the future can Manchester United win the league with this manager it's not a case of finishing top 4 top 5 top 6 you have to have a manager you think you can win the league with

17:01Nicky Butt:without throwing too much shade on the first 9 games as a Premier League manager is the joint best start to any manager in the Premier League history with Michael Kerry do you know who the other one is yeah unless I read that script Angi Posikoglu he was the other one with that record yeah

17:20Paddy McGuinness:I remember that I remember when he was flying remember that they were on the top at table and they were flying Angi Ball and all that

17:26Nicky Butt:all Spur phones we were loving it well it's an example of football

17:28Paddy McGuinness:Michael one thing about Michael he's a very level-eated lad a really good lad and he will understand that there will be a turning point sooner or later it can't keep going like it's going you'd wish for it to do that again you're going around the houses I think he'll get the job now after the last couple two or three games I didn't think they'd keep winning and he's finding a way to win it and the players are finding a way to win it and unless someone jumps out in the next three or four months sorry yeah three or four weeks the males give it a Michael the great thing these on Chalottis are

17:59Paul Scholes:and these manager big clubs is experience I know it sounds obvious because they've got their age behind them and they've also been a foot big football clubs for a long time what we won't know about Michael yes going

18:11Nicky Butt:through a bit of a I was just gonna ask something similar to that so do you Do you think Michael, he's been at Middlesbrough, he's come in as interim manager at United, it's going brilliant for him, everything's looking like he's going to get the job. But when they come to him with whatever that deal might be, because he doesn't have that winning sort of, he's got the trophies and he's been around in his age, do you think sometimes as a young manager, going into a club like United, where it's almost like I'd do anything, get the job, you're going to agree to things that you shouldn't do possibly

18:49Paddy McGuinness:and that's when it goes that's where your heart plays it because he's so close to the football club he's been there a long time his son plays there that can that will and they'll be aware of that that will play with your heart strings that are being managed at football club I'm pretty sure he said in the press that the only management he would go back into before he got the Man United job was obviously the Man United job and he's got it it's the biggest if you've played Man United for that long that is the biggest job you can get the only thing from the club's point of view is they might think

19:17Paul Scholes:we might get a manager

19:19Nicky Butt:on the cheap that's what I'm saying and also do you think he'd still take the job if they sat down with him and said Luke Michael you've no saying what players we want to bring in you've no saying they'll never say that

19:31Paddy McGuinness:what they would say is look you're part of the team you're part of the recruitment driving team they won't give him the full autonomy to go and do that and I think that's right nowadays the amount of times managers move club ball clubs and the change and the big financial costs to a football club, you can't have Paul Scores managing it one week and buying all the players that he likes and he gets sacked after nine months and then you go and take over and you buy all the players you want because what happens then, Paddy, is not only are you buying your ones, you're paying them ones up as well. So basically, they have to have the foundations of the football club, the pillars, if you like, solid so that whatever manager's in charge and it's me, Scores, you or you, the players of that football club, they're not Paddy McGuinness's players or Paul Scores' players.

20:13Paddy McGuinness:so I do think they're right in that and I think that's the way football's been going the last 15 years but he has to have a say in it he has to have a bit of a say in it he wants to be called

20:20Paul Scholes:he has to have a say in it look there's still some parts of that team that he's got to get right if they're going to challenge for the league I still think in the middle of the pitch he's got to find stuff and he will be saying all this to them I always think the biggest problem when you call the head coach that when you don't have a say in players managers can be very stubborn so if they don't want this player the club want the player no the club's still buying the club will still get them and then people like Michael maybe not Michael but managers right through or the Premier League through all down the leagues if they're not buying the players they won't play him they won't play him

21:01Paddy McGuinness:do you know what I mean he said no it's like the players that Van Gaal brought in they were very the Dutch way and they played that kind of very slow build up methodical build up he won the FA Cup he can say he was successful he then leaves and a Mourinho comes in total different football total different mindset around football and another massive massive naming football management he then wants to go and change all that philosophy and all that way of playing and players to get his players in remember anyway when I got Zlatan he went and got Mkhitaryan he went and got Pogba he went and can't remember that was Van Gaal?

21:36Paddy McGuinness:no it was Mourinho and you're thinking they just completely checked not Popper was already there but they changed the whole dynamic That is a massive cost because you're paying up contracts of the older players. So that's a big cost.

21:47Paul Scholes:You talk about being a man manager. You knew Marineo, didn't you? You worked with him. He seemed to fall out a lot of players. He didn't seem to really. Does he fit that? How would he make players feel? Did you know only 6 % of people are getting enough fibre?

23:25Paddy McGuinness:i think what i've seen of marino was he was a man manager and a presence because of what he'd done in the game yeah but he was he was a definite 100 % technical on the grass coach he did everything yeah he had people help him out that's another example I'm not working out a big club he did he was there doing the set everything the whole training control for it he was control care could on there's a lot of them like that yeah but I thought he was he was unbelievable

23:53Paul Scholes:which I think they were type of managers are with great experience I know Gareth Southgate said a few things this weekend he probably turned England around with his man management again I don't think he's a tactician I don't think he likes coach I don't think he wants to coach but again he's brought a proper coach but that's what's

24:09Paddy McGuinness:happening with Michael now when Michael's making a sub you're bringing a forward off who scored a goal with 20 minutes left and he's laughing and joking hugging him so he's got a relationship with him and he's worked that over the period of time he's been there but we keep saying that's different when you are a full time manager not the interim one because sooner or later, if he does get them...

24:29Paul Scholes:He will have to fall out with people.

24:30Paddy McGuinness:He gets a job next week, example. He's then in communication with the recruitment team, finding midfielders or finding forwards or finding full-backs to come into the club. And like Scully said, word of mouth and like these kind of reporters who get to know what's going on in the recruitment of the club. That gets back to the player who they're going to replace. They're not going to have a relationship like that then. It totally changes.

24:53Nicky Butt:Just with what he's doing differently around... he's obviously got the feel-good factor back with the players and what have you, which seem to just be through the flow with Ameren. Although, I did see some, McDowell did an interview this week saying he thinks Ameren changed United for the better and he's left a fantastic legacy and he was good for Kobe Maneu. I shouldn't laugh. Again, I was reading that, I was like, sometimes you read stuff and you think, and that's coming from Alcee's mouth as a player, so he's obviously he's obviously got a massive relationship with his family hasn't he? Portuguese Portuguese

25:29Paddy McGuinness:obviously you don't want to say anything bad about him

25:33Paul Scholes:now look what he's saying from the outside looking at him that's complete nonsense but he's just protected him I suppose

25:39Nicky Butt:well just with that in mind sorry so with Michael so he's reportedly made training sessions shorter but more intense with each session lasting 60 to 75 minutes now what were it like in your day how long was training and what kind of stuff did you do? Were it game specific, match specific or just like have a kick about lads?

26:01Paul Scholes:I think it was almost like a standard thing, wasn't it? You was trained half 10 to 12 o 'clock, hour and half but obviously that gets tailored so the day before a game might be 45 minutes. If you're having loads of games, you might hardly train. It might be 45 minutes every day. There just always seemed to be that window, didn't you? Half 10 to 12 o 'clock. You never went past 12 o 'clock. That was the thing. I think a lot of managers doing that I remember Pep saying a couple years, I'd seen him at one of these Legends games we had, and he said, there's no time to train, because there's that many games.

26:34Paul Scholes:I said, I can do half an hour sometimes, but as long as it's half an hour and it's intense stuff, proper stuff, that's enough for him.

26:42Paddy McGuinness:Going back to what's going on about top, top players, what do you actually do with them through the week when you've got two games a week or three games a week when you've got Europe? You just keep them ticking over. Just keep them ticking over. you're getting them probably recovering from two games two days earlier game getting their legs going a lot of it when we was playing three times a week and playing in Champions Leagues and stuff a lot of it was small sided games possession a little warm up and either the forwards and the attacking players will probably do a bit of shooting we spoke about it we used to guys spoke about it with Steve McLaren they might pull the defence back for five ten minutes just looking out a bit of shape with the sitting midfielder we very rarely did

27:21Paul Scholes:like tactical stuff so that's what I'm talking about because it's Man United you know the way you're supposed to play anyway

27:25Nicky Butt:that's what I'm saying so were your training sessions just more like six a side games and small side possessions

27:31Paul Scholes:there's different ways of training there's coaches who put sessions on which are like possessions it's nothing really tactical and then they are the tactical coaches and you might do little bits if you're playing a big game say you're playing Liverpool away then you might do little bits towards them and bits of shape

27:48Paddy McGuinness:but even that one when Carlos Kieros came

27:50Paul Scholes:very little for us growing up for 10-15 years Carlos Kieros did loads of it I remember Barcelona away all week working on how to look after them for players especially it's boring I was going to say is that a bit too much to take in as a player no because you realise that these big games they are important so they switch you on a little bit beforehand don't they I suppose but as a player it's not something I think

28:22Paddy McGuinness:we weren't brought up like that I remember when I'm towards the middle to the latter end of my career when it started coming in it used to drive me fucking crazy Steve used to do it Steve yeah there's so much to take in constantly take in and you look at what the lads do now and my son plays and some of the things they get before a game it's like wow you've actually got to be a student of the game now

28:44Nicky Butt:I think some of the young players now you'll know better than with your lad but it's like it's almost they've got too much to think about rather than just their position and just playing the game. But that's why I think we were like

28:57Paul Scholes:free spirits really, weren't we? Because we're playing for Man Utd. The only thing you'd expect to do as midfield players, you take risk. That was a bigger thing. You take the ball anywhere on a football pitch, you had the confidence to do that. That's why I'm saying Man Utd was maybe different. You don't need, I keep saying Real Madrid as well and Barcelona, you don't really need that much information.

29:19Paddy McGuinness:you're there for a reason if you look at how kids are brought up now as well they take information on naturally better than we did with our generation because if you look at what they do my son back in his day when he was about 10 he could have worked at a recruitment team we knew every player it was all because of the FIFA they play online or whatever else they're playing online on the playstation don't you remember

29:38Paul Scholes:apparently Louis van Gaal bought a player

29:41Paddy McGuinness:his grandson wasn't it

29:43Paul Scholes:his son his grandson talking about Marcus Rojo from Argentina

29:47Nicky Butt:what for playing it on FIFA no yes well that's what that's got to be one of them like made up things no it's true my lad said to me

29:57Paddy McGuinness:said to me about a player said they should go and these three players I never even heard of these players and believe it or not probably two years later these players started going to big clubs in Europe so but again going off tangent a little bit there but I tell you they take information a lot better all we did with these kids was football go and play football go and play and the best players will get scouted you'll get put into a better team which you should naturally get better all our training up until probably the age of 24 23 that I can remember was just work ethic getting fit and the rest of it takes out of itself

30:33Nicky Butt:were you saying there's more games now and it feels like what you were saying about I'm not sure there is more games well what you were saying about how they manage it and Pep was saying sometimes I'm lucky if I get half over session have you ever been in teams where you've had a really your schedule's been packed and the manager says to certain players don't train today

30:55Paul Scholes:just relax especially when you get to a certain age if you get into over 30 right Giggs I really struggled with that because I just wanted to go out and train every day I just couldn't go to the training ground and go to the gym and go on a swimming pool even when you come in

31:10Nicky Butt:even when I was 36

31:11Paul Scholes:I hated it but Ryan Giggs was unbelievable at that Just getting himself right for each game, which is needing it. The boss would probably tell him three or four weeks in advance, I need you for this game. So Kixi got it down to a fan. I know he knows when he's got to go out. He knows when he's got to do a bit on the grass, but he also knows when to rest. When to sit in the steam room for half an hour. When to sit in the queue.

31:33Nicky Butt:I was going to say, would you notice it in training? Would you notice he's not going in for that reason? Like 100%, he's just taking it a bit easy and just getting through the session. He was a master at that. preparing for games when he was needed he was unbelievable just looking at that United Palace there's one thing that really irked me it's interesting to get both your opinions on it firstly I love Aaron Maguire right I think oh he's conducted himself but yeah oh he's conducted himself over the last few seasons when he's been through all the horrendous stuff he's been through off the fans and everything else and he's come out tops but this holding his face and going over when he were literally nowhere near him.

32:24Nicky Butt:They were about that far, the gap, the boot. I hated, not from Harry Maguire. No, it's not like him either.

32:31Paul Scholes:It's not like him. Twice, twice, twice. Sometimes all you're doing is an experienced player there. You're just getting the referee's head. Try getting booked. No, but not doing all

32:41Nicky Butt:this. No, no. Look, it's wrong. it's wrong have you ever had an incident like when you've been playing where you've to be first no to be first in a play I was going to say where you think something's happened

32:52Paul Scholes:you think something's happened and it's not Liverpool away can I tell you about Nicky go on then we might have mentioned this before I've got a feeling we have but playing Liverpool away a big game normally sometimes like half eleven no early one and Nicky's I think it was a set piece corner or something wasn't it someone across Nicky's probably marking one of their big lads I think he just punches the ball

33:15Paddy McGuinness:I fucking didn't punch the ball I mean He punches the ball Before we started And he just makes things up Like what you said I didn't punch the ball I'll make it a bit better

33:24Paul Scholes:Start again I think he punched the ball He handballed He handballed the ball Blatant Blatant So after the game The gaffer's going mad He totally denied it No it was at half time It was at half time It was at half time He totally denied Handling the ball And he gave the penalty away I'm sorry At Liverpool You know this is on telly Don't you there's a very good chance that we might see the replay but you carry on because you said you convinced you honestly

33:47Paddy McGuinness:honest to god when I seen it I was so you're talking about Harry then when I seen it I was embarrassed I was going fucking hell I was but I was convinced I didn't touch the ball I was convinced no I was convinced I jumped up and I've no I just me had convinced myself that I didn't touch it and then I seen it me had convinced myself it was the biggest handball you'd ever see I may as well just caught it in my day like Michael Jordan that's what I'm saying

34:10Nicky Butt:so as a player You genuinely think you did.

34:13Paddy McGuinness:That's different to getting hit in the face, isn't it? Because you can feel that. He denied it to the health manager. Even when I've seen it, I've always, AI, even back then, 25 years. I never, I didn't.

34:21Nicky Butt:Did he, so when you've come off, then he's, did he instantly have a go at you?

34:26Paddy McGuinness:Oh yeah, that was fucking hell. He had a go at me every time I'd come off, didn't he? No, but what I'm saying is,

34:29Nicky Butt:so you're arguing back going, never touched it.

34:31Paddy McGuinness:I went, gaffer, I swear to God, I swear to you, I didn't touch it. He's gone. He believed me as well. But back then, he didn't have the laptops or anything, So he must have been sat at home at the night time Going, that lame bastard But I literally, I was convinced that I didn't touch the ball But that happened when you play football When you foul someone I didn't touch him And you look at him and you go Fucking this nearly took his leg off Literally, it's weird

34:52Paul Scholes:That's what you do You deny everything Until proven otherwise

34:57Nicky Butt:Yeah, I think now Like you were just saying There's that many cameras everywhere You can't do anything now No, they're little stamping on the toes like that

35:07Paddy McGuinness:A corner kick you can't do that or nothing now you know the remote

35:09Nicky Butt:drivers have had three or four tipple overs on the floor off a challenge

35:14Paddy McGuinness:although I need to start saying something which is really pissing me off at these corners the corners handling the man handling at corners oh do you mean

35:23Nicky Butt:in the box when they're waiting for you

35:25Paddy McGuinness:obviously the highlight I used to do with the Arsenal because Chelsea scored and Arsenal have done great with what's going on and I'm not one of these idiots that think set pieces are part of the game and the better people have to do generally score more goals, generally get more points. And it's not wrong with that. But if you're looking at it now, there's probably eight players around a goalkeeper and they're all grabbing each other. They're not even looking at the ball. Someone's got to stop with it soon. I think I heard Peter Smeichel talk about it. I know obviously you will support goalkeepers as you do with the union.

35:56Paddy McGuinness:But I have to stick up for them a little bit. It's becoming a nonsense. It's just becoming a fight. It's not even a part of the sport. It's crap.

36:03Nicky Butt:That one where he's collapsed Sanchez, it's gone and he was seen he was pushed just before that corner were delivered he was not even look he was pushing two of his own players pushing them like that into Arsenal playing he's like I'm thinking what's going on here

36:21Paddy McGuinness:do you know what gets me the most and I don't know if the rules change over the last couple of years but certainly two years ago if he wasn't if the corner's getting taken from that side I've got to be looking at the ball so I can go half and half with scores you know now his face he's not at the backs of the ball and he's just going up. It's ridiculous. They've got to stop that.

36:40Paul Scholes:I say it was the United, Lenny Yarrow. Yeah. He's obsessed with a man.

36:45Paddy McGuinness:Yeah.

36:45Paul Scholes:You should have to be at least... Lenny, you need to know where the ball is, man. Yeah.

36:49Paddy McGuinness:You should have to at least be on the half-term and at least have an eye on the ball like that. But they're not. They're just completely grabbing it.

36:55Nicky Butt:Is that like a zonal thing then? Are they told, forget that, just stay on him and stay there? It's a big individual thing. It came from abroad, didn't it, really? It's an individual thing.

37:03Paul Scholes:You think of the great Italian defenders do you you just fucking grab people you can't really do that as much but when you're grabbing these people and be physical against them as Nicky said you've got to have some idea where the ball is

37:14Paddy McGuinness:well I've got to send after the week I think it was last week the lads might get it up so if you grab him he went out and pushed his arm down banged his hand down get sent off

37:23Paul Scholes:that was Celtic

37:24Paddy McGuinness:Celtic smack his hand get sent off and you're going if someone's grabbing your shirt you've got to get their arm off you can't fucking

37:30Paul Scholes:punch him

37:32Paddy McGuinness:Yeah I bet it's Years ago He's got a prop like that He's got a prop like that He's got a prop like that He's got a prop like that Yeah but he shouldn't grab the shirt Can we talk about the Chelsea arse

37:38Nicky Butt:I'll go in a moment So that one That incident Where Rice has got his arms Over his shoulders Like that But before we get into The handball thing Surely that Was a foul Is a foul It's a foul Because he's like that And he can't jump up I tell you what It's a foul

37:56Paddy McGuinness:Forget the handball And they can see that on VAR And don't do it That's what I'm saying So if you do that Outside the box and open play it's a free kick

38:03Nicky Butt:same with the goalkeeper

38:04Paddy McGuinness:when he punches the lad's head off after he's headed it if he kicks a ball in the middle of the pitch and I leave my foot in after he's kicked it it's a bucking so how can a keeper come out and punch your head off but as it comes down to there's not enough bravery within the referees and VAR and there's no excuse now with the VAR they can watch it and say that's definitely it

38:24Paul Scholes:we talk about VAR how can they not give handball for that now look he's not looking but he's already seen which path the ball's coming and he just he nudges his arm up towards it Is that not just where he would sort of naturally go in? No he naturally puts his arm up

38:41Nicky Butt:So we've got an incident where that if it were outside of the box that would have been a yeller Yeah and we've got the handball thrown in as well and the refs give neither

38:52Paddy McGuinness:He was a goalkeeper of the week we were talking about Liverpool when you said he didn't think it was a penalty remember last minute so that's what's the difference with that and what Raya did to knocking his head off what's the difference with that there's no difference at all

39:06Nicky Butt:there's none just with this set piece goals again with Arsenal Yaya Tori were on Sky and he said after the game I'm disappointed about this game we want to see fluid football passing attacking scoring chances but at the end of the day we see three goals from set pieces in a derby it's strange

39:30Paul Scholes:Well that's the way they win games, that's the way Arsenal have won games basically all season, which is why I remember, what did I say, the worst team that could win the Premier League. Are you still standing by that? Yeah. But I haven't been impressed by any team. I looked City and Arsenal both, I've not looked at either of them and thought they're champions. I actually looked, when I was watching Arsenal yesterday, you get to a stage of the season now where you do win games any way you can and I get that and you admire them for that of course you do because it's that time that's time that's in what I took from that game it was the most frustrating thing it was Chelsea yeah

40:13Nicky Butt:well it's the red card and all you're going what that challenge he's done that was crazy

40:18Paul Scholes:but even before that part of the first half when they try to play out from the back all the time they keep giving the ball to the goalkeeper now I was thinking when me and Nicky was playing the last now look the game has changed don't get me wrong but the last thing we ever did was or was ever told to do was pass the ball back to the goalkeeper they kept doing it doing it doing it now or even passing it to your defender defenders they used them as an extra play now that was probably brought in from Spanish football from Pep to be fair and you do admire some of it Of course you do, if your goalkeeper can do it.

40:58Paul Scholes:I always remember when Gary Neville went to Valencia, because the goalkeepers are different, as you might know, Paddy. They go and train in a different part of the field. Yeah, of course. In Spain, they go out like 20 minutes early, do their goalkeeping stuff, and then they just join in the football, because they are supposed to be a footballer. Like I say, I think it's good for a certain point. But when you're watching Chelsea, I'm thinking, they keep using the goalkeeper. I think there's a stat come up after half an hour. I think the goalkeeper touched it the most. He was having a nightmare.

41:27Paul Scholes:It was a complete disaster. He was miscontrolling it. He was kicking out of play. He's kicking it to their players. It's almost using them as a quarterback, aren't they? Like trying to get them long.

41:37Nicky Butt:I'd be embarrassed as a player going back to him all the time.

41:40Paddy McGuinness:If the goalkeeper's better with his feet than one of the four defenders that are back, it's a problem. There's a massive problem now. You will get some defenders better than others, but in general, all the four, if you're playing in a back four, every single one of that back four should be better with your feet than the goalkeeper. it's actually from a

41:54Paul Scholes:coaching point of view as you're watching the game thinking right you're playing all this stuff in your own half sometimes it looks good sometimes most of the time it didn't you do remember there's a goal at the other end of the pitch that you've got to try and score goals and they've got Cole Palmer and they've got Neto they've got Fernandes is it Fernandes Enzo Fernandes they've got the Santa Fala Pedro fucking hell you've got some good players

42:17Nicky Butt:I agree with you but could you argue the other way as well like with how the modern goalkeeper is supposed to be good with his feet and everything else when you look at like Edison when he was at City they got quite a few goals but he was smashing them 80 yards

42:33Paul Scholes:yeah he wasn't getting caught at his feet all the time and that's what was frustrating me about the Chelsea players they kept passing back to him he was having a nightmare he's bouncing off his heel he's bouncing off his foot

42:45Nicky Butt:the manager it must be the way they train every single day of the week it must be yeah but that's what I'm saying so as a manager you're not going it's not working this like you've fallen into the hammering thing where he just won't be told exactly

42:57Paul Scholes:as I said before coaches are stubborn I think if we was watching on a different fucking get it out or you say stop passing to him for fuck's sake can you not see what's happening you see that

43:07Paddy McGuinness:at all levels don't you but it's like you say

43:10Paul Scholes:we're stubbornness Nick say no this is the way we play this keep doing it keep doing it

43:14Paddy McGuinness:keep getting beat but it's a mentality that we have in this country now where it's like what Pep did was you're never going to see it again it was unbelievable it was possibly the best football to watch back when they were ever that and their Barcelona team to watch and it's a great example of not every team can't do that you know you see it on a school football track and you're going what are you doing going to see it in league 2 and non-league it's like if you're capable of doing that you won't be playing at this level you'll be playing at the top level with a top team it's almost you get slated off for long ball

43:46Paul Scholes:I was thinking yesterday when I'm watching that I think of the great Chelsea teams you think of John Terry and Cavallo at the back. Imagine them playing like that. They say, you just fucking boot it up there. Let's go up to the halfway line. Kayak gets my flight, hotel, and rental car right, so I can tune out travel advice that's just plain wrong.

44:06Nicky Butt:Bro, Skycoin. Way better than points.

44:55Nicky Butt:Spring is here, and there's a whole new way to chai at Starbucks that's made perfect for you. Choose your sweetness, dial it up, or keep things light. Add a touch of pistachio, a hint of strawberry, or vanilla. Or make it a spring classic with lavender. Because this season, there's endless ways to chai at Starbucks.

45:17Paddy McGuinness:but one thing I want to say about Arsenal is you know to get the results that they get in with the pressure that they're under and they're playing a day remember playing a day after and you see your rivals winning the game the day before it's tough that I'm telling you I don't care I'm going to ask you about that

45:33Nicky Butt:I'm going to ask you about that in a sec because that is a lovely link but before I do just with this Arsenal winning games and getting goals from set pieces Arsenal set-piece coach Nico and I hope I've got this right Giova he's got a bonus clause for dead ball goals in his contract Brilliant he'd be loaded won't he? But now Is that more than Arteta? Surely that's a negative like for me I'm going

46:08Paul Scholes:they've got to win games

46:10Nicky Butt:at this point

46:11Paul Scholes:it's about winning any games No, but he's got a dead ball goals in his contract, so he's going to want them to do that all the time. I don't mind, I don't care how you win games when you're going for leagues. It's hard. It's tough. Now, they've been doing it all season. That's the only issue I have with it. At this point, no, great. Do whatever you can.

46:30Paddy McGuinness:But yeah, it's a great incentive for him, isn't it? Of course it is. But you know something? You see that all the time, and you see it with Amrinds at United, you see it all over the show. Mind you, we're still on the sideline. Dick Tentiff and Anastas are the best at it or the worst of it, he never sits down, he's always involved in the game. The minute a set-piece coach, he comes and walks back and sits down and then the set-piece coach goes on. Now, if they get beat or give a set-piece away, this set-piece coach isn't the one getting ado in the newspapers or on Sky Sports. It's the manager.

46:59Paddy McGuinness:I think it's a really weird down. I mean, they get so much leeway to do it.

47:03Paul Scholes:They should take money off them if they concede one as well.

47:08Nicky Butt:You know, after the game as well, this is where, when you were saying a couple of weeks back about let's see how they start going on March, April. After that, when the final whistle went, Arsenal, Chelsea, did you see Arteta, Elish who went like, thank fuck

47:27Paul Scholes:that's over. There's massive pressure on them. There is because they've been in really good positions over the years and not been able to get off the line. So now, they're in an incredible position. Now look, you're not going to see free-flowing football. You're not. Look, I don't think we've seen it all season from any team. as I keep saying but especially at this point it's how they get over the line that is the most important

47:47Paddy McGuinness:Do you see Asus's face when they got the goal that's allowing Chelsea in the last couple of minutes and when the lads scored the kick was offside I mean if that goes in it's a total different end of the season City would have been sat at home now going we've got them we've got them Oh that would have been it

48:00Nicky Butt:Kieber made a great serve as well He did Two saves there actually he did too but also as well and I've been said it weeks and weeks ago I was sort of back in City to win. I think after that result, just because of that offside goal disallowed and the set piece and how they won it, I think Arsenal are going to do it now.

48:22Paddy McGuinness:City will win it.

48:23Nicky Butt:But I just don't see them going on an unbeaten run until the end of the season. City? Yeah. That's why I'm saying it. I think they're the only team

48:33Paddy McGuinness:that's capable of getting an undefeated run. I think they have been in years. I can't see it now. I don't see anyone against that. We've had to pick one. I'd pick City to go on a long run.

48:41Paul Scholes:If you had to pick one of them, it would be City. But I know every team, whoever wins a league, you say at the end of it, they deserved it. I'm struggling to find which team. Do you know what I mean? None of them are, City and Arten, none of them have convinced me that they should be Premier League champions. I don't think they should give the trophy out this year. The fucking Scalds is going to fucking love the Arten. No one deserves it. No one deserves it. Honestly, it's not been great to us. Again, Martin Keon, if he's watching this,

49:11Nicky Butt:he's not going to be best pleased about it. Do you know why else I think they'll win it? That, what we were just saying about... Sorry, you've changed your mind though. So you think Arsenal win it now? I think Arsenal are going to win it now. All right. After that Chelsea game. Who next week? I've been with City all the way through, but I just... Do you know what else made me think... What's made you change in over the weekend, Paddy? I'll tell you why as well. It sounds mad. When he had his arms, Declan Rice had his arms in, and that's not been given. Then he's gone like that, and he's gone in.

49:39Nicky Butt:That's not been given. I'm going, it's with them now. It's just those decisions towards the end of a season. I think if you get away with them and you win by any means necessary, it's in them now. I think they're just going to do it.

49:54Paul Scholes:I don't think you can take anything from this weekend. Both of them have had great wins.

49:57Paddy McGuinness:Do you know what I'd take from this weekend? And you mentioned it a couple of podcasts ago. You don't win a league without having a top goalkeeper. And whether you like that Ray or not, he pulls off some saves. He pulled off a couple of good saves today. the guy Nacho when he cut the cross and he gets that you still can't split him because Donnarumma's unbelievable Donnarumma's unbelievable but Arsenal we've found there Donnarumma's just always been top hasn't he he's been top since he was playing it from 17

50:22Paul Scholes:shall we base it off then shall we decide who's going to win the league who's got the best goalkeeper

50:28Paddy McGuinness:well City will win it then because he's just unbelievable come on Paddy you're a keeper he's going to Arsenal he can't change again don't change again no I'm not

50:36Nicky Butt:I'm saying he's going Villa

50:37Paddy McGuinness:in a minute hang on can I just say when I said City

50:40Nicky Butt:you two were like no chance when when about 10 podcasts back I said when they signed Donna Roma I said it look back I think it was I said it when they signed him episode 8

50:50Paddy McGuinness:I said City will win it I've said it all the way along but I'm just telling you now Arsenal are doing all that and they need to do by scrappily winning these goals and you can't go against what they're doing whether you like it or how they're doing it or not they're winning I just feel it's just it's the pep factor in me can we keep it

51:06Paul Scholes:as simple as who's got the best goalkeeper wins the Premier League it's hard separating them though it's not like

51:13Nicky Butt:a shooting for Donna Romo

51:14Paul Scholes:because we're not seeing brilliant attacking players and brilliant free flowing football so I'm saying because it's not been great can it be the best goalkeeper who has the best goalkeeper wins the

51:25Nicky Butt:Premier League this year there's nine games left let's just say it then I'm gonna say as much as it pains me Arsenal win the league City win the league City last week

51:36Paddy McGuinness:it changed my

51:37Nicky Butt:weeds no no it doesn't I've been City all the way through and I'm saying I'm saying I still want City to win it as a northerner but there was something about some of the stuff that happened in that Chelsea game I just thought they're going to win the league these who are still yeah look they probably

51:57Paul Scholes:should do but I'm basing this on I I like to watch entertaining football teams that I think wow they can score a goal at the minute

52:09Nicky Butt:I'm not saying I'm not saying the best team now I'm basing

52:13Paul Scholes:my decision on now who's got the best goalkeeper and who's got the best two centre halves I think it's just City

52:20Nicky Butt:so you're saying City win the league yes you're saying City win the league I want Arsenal to win it but I'm saying City will win it and I'm saying Arsenal right there's nine games left but we'll change our mind again I was going to say no changing minds that is it I've gone right nine games left and I've been saying City all along you two you came on side earlier on you weren't saying you were saying City aren't going to do it it's flipped now let's see what happens but it's flipped for different reasons

52:54Paul Scholes:isn't it do you know what I mean because I I've probably almost just made my mind up now but these last 20 minutes I've convinced myself about defensive because Because nothing's entertainment in the Premier League this year. It is interesting. I think it is a neutral... I'll say in the Premier League, there might be some games. I've actually quite enjoyed watching your Bournemouths and Brightons at times. Yeah, they've been in Sunderlands. I think they've been more entertaining than what's going on. I've enjoyed watching Leeds.

53:22Nicky Butt:Leeds, yeah. Leeds have done really well. This is from David, fan of the pod. Hello, David. James Milner brought the record for Premier League appearances last weekend. what's the key to longevity at the top level and I've got a little quiz question for you

53:36Paddy McGuinness:I played with James at Newcastle he signed funny enough the same week as I signed at Newcastle great lad football obsessed just football football football training every single day and Scorsi mentioned about Ryan before about how he managed himself obviously James towards the last five or six seven years I would have had to have done that but before that he was the first one on a training pitch he was the last one on a training pitch he would practice crossing every single day he was just a complete pro and I can imagine to manage him would have been one of the easiest things ever and I mean to play that that long and have that many that many games it's just a credit to him really and how he's coached

54:22Paul Scholes:you just missed the football he's just a machine like I don't know I've never played with him but as Nicky said he must be so dedicated I think he was Teetotal as well and that probably helps doesn't it

54:32Nicky Butt:he's like James Milner for me is like the Stephen Hendry of football just obsessed does it obsessed

54:42Paul Scholes:it's an unbelievable achievement what he's done and still doing still doing it's incredible Andy

54:50Nicky Butt:he looks like a player at Brighton where you go you can see him just doing another season do you know what I mean it's not like I think he's already said

54:58Paddy McGuinness:I think that's it I think after this one I think Danny Welbeck was trying to get him on the internet and he interviewed after the game was trying to get him to commit to another year I think not knowing James that well but knowing from what I know of him I think he would go straight into coaching straight into coaching You can see him

55:15Nicky Butt:being a good coach as well

55:16Paddy McGuinness:You can't be that obsessed with football for that length of time and just walk away I think he'll definitely go straight into coaching

55:22Paul Scholes:There is a big value to them type of players just to have around the squad even if he's going to play 15 games a season because the example that will be certain to young players coming through in the dressing room will be incredible. And how you conduct yourself in what's

55:34Paddy McGuinness:in the water at Brighton like you could argue with Danny Welmeck as well. Yeah, again with Danny he's obviously had a lot more injuries than James over the years but it's just you have to be obsessed with football to play that long you've got to really be I'm old Danny now 36? 35, 36? Think of the effects of sports science

55:51Paul Scholes:and stuff the players are going until they're 40 now it's no big surprise.

55:55Nicky Butt:as with you saying about being obsessed with football did you two ever play with anyone ever who didn't like football

56:03Paddy McGuinness:oh yeah a few

56:04Nicky Butt:because that blows

56:05Paddy McGuinness:my mind yeah I wouldn't say play but I coached a few that actually said I don't really like football you weren't massive on football you like wouldn't watch every game I weren't a football geek what goes and sits watching every game

56:16Nicky Butt:I don't mean watching every game I mean just turning up training I love playing

56:20Paddy McGuinness:I love training but I wasn't one that would sit in front of a TV and watch the four games over the whole weekend.

56:26Nicky Butt:Well, go on then. Who did you play with who just didn't like football, couldn't wait until they retired?

56:32Paddy McGuinness:I've coached a couple of lads that verbally said to me, I don't want to do football, I don't like it, I don't really like football.

56:38Paul Scholes:Do you know what? I coached a lot at Aldermott. I know it's only three or four weeks or five games. He didn't know he was playing at night time. He didn't know...

56:45Paddy McGuinness:Nick Powell. Nick Powell was like that. Nick Powell. That's basically that. Nick Powell didn't... Nick wanted to do...

56:51Paul Scholes:Really talented player. Talented. Unbelievable.

56:53Paddy McGuinness:All he wanted to do was just be a student and have his mates and not he's fair with that James Wilson James Wilson you just go oh that talent gone but yeah but Paddy that's two I've named out of thousands so he's always going to get the exception that's not like it I think you'd have anyone to play I can't have anyone

57:11Paul Scholes:I can't have anyone I can't have anyone I can't have anyone I can't have anyone I can't have anyone I don't know you can't get your head around that though can you no but they just don't I watch every game that's untelling me I'd watch everything a little bit different

57:22Nicky Butt:I've probably got this totally wrong but even I used to and it sounds bonkers because this is a lad who's won all sorts but like when I used to look at Michael Owen I always used to think does he like when he finished and went home like because he's into his GGs and all rest of it do you think he absolutely loved playing

57:43Paul Scholes:I think some of them Brazilian players I think of people like Anderson but do you know what that does so it gives you a bit of strength sometimes because when they go into a big game they haven't really seen the other team do you know what I mean they haven't really so it has no effect to them they're not bothered maybe if I was watching a game and I'm watching players oh fucking hell he's good that might give me a little bit something to worry about these Brazilians especially they have an unbelievable mentality they don't care what they're doing where they're playing what ground it is there's so much confidence in themselves it's just confidence in themselves that might help

58:21Nicky Butt:I don't know well going back to what Nicky said earlier I hadn't forgot it just what you're saying about the Brazilian lads with City and Arsenal are they all watching each other's games on the telly and are they watching all the other games definitely as Nicky said before I think

58:37Paul Scholes:City playing first that is a big big advantage I remember actually once someone might pull me up on this I might have got it wrong but I seem to remember we were playing West Ham away I think you'd gone Nick I think it was later and we were playing them at R5 I think on a Saturday tea time and Chelsea might have been the early game or they might have played at 3 o 'clock it might have been the R12 game against Everton and it was really really close for a long time and we've got them we've got them I think Drogba scored in the third minute of injury time unbelievable it might have been Drogba it might have been Lampard I don't know but it was a brilliant goal and that fucking hits you really?

59:15Paul Scholes:yeah that hits you we went to West Ham and got beat

59:18Paddy McGuinness:I remember the flips I watched remember was it Fenton Blackburn we won the league that night that was like who was that against was it Liverpool or was it Newcastle Newcastle Newcastle oh Blackburn there we go Newcastle I remember we was all out at the night time singing his name like singing his song for Blackburn all the United lads in town we just won the league went to Living Room remember do you find

59:44Nicky Butt:if you play FBL like I do and I love how it like that but do you find yourself in those title situations watching games cheering on a player who you who you normally couldn't stand but you're going

59:57Paddy McGuinness:go on not so much cheering it only happened to me once or twice where you're literally watching a game that's decided we usually let them win it ourselves I can remember

1:00:05Paul Scholes:Leeds at Arsenal Leeds yeah that was a big one as well

1:00:07Paddy McGuinness:it was all at home watching out of houses next evening do you all get together

1:00:11Nicky Butt:and watch them games when it comes to

1:00:13Paddy McGuinness:the end of the season we'd always be on the phone as soon as the finalists went right town Half an hour Living room We'd all be in town Living room I remember that place Within 40 minutes We'd be in town Like celebrating Oh dear The living room

1:00:26Nicky Butt:Right okay Right We just spoke about James Milner And it says here Little quiz one Can you guess The top 10 Appearance makers In the Premier League Top 10 Have you got the list I've got the list Appearance makers In the Premier League Gixi Gareth Barry

1:00:45Paddy McGuinness:David James are you

1:00:47Nicky Butt:are you giving me these in order are you just saying who's in there no I was just saying who's in there fucking hell what do you think

1:00:53Paddy McGuinness:I'm Stato

1:00:53Nicky Butt:right okay so right you say them and I'll tell you David James David James he's 5th 572 appearances Ryan Giggs 3rd

1:01:06Paddy McGuinness:632 Gareth Barry 2nd Gareth Barry 2nd 653 James Milton 1st ooh getting a bit tricky now he mentioned him John Terry I tell you it's Phil Neville no

1:01:21Nicky Butt:Phil Neville creeps onto the list at number 10 505

1:01:26Paul Scholes:yeah bloody hell I love that yeah do you know what

1:01:29Nicky Butt:amazes me about that what Gary's not on there a lot of injuries a lot of injuries okay there's one you've already said his name earlier on when we were chatting not John Terry no no Lampard

1:01:43Paul Scholes:Lampard

1:01:44Nicky Butt:yeah 4th 610 how many is that

1:01:46Paul Scholes:is John Terry not on it how many is that we've got there

1:01:48Nicky Butt:John Terry's not on it you've got 1 2 3 4 Carragher 9 508 so you've got 1 2 3 players left might need some help and weirdly they're in order this is 6 7 and 8

1:02:06Paul Scholes:might need some help one of them

1:02:09Nicky Butt:goalkeeper one of them absolute legend

1:02:14Nicky Butt:X Bolton Nolan sadly no longer with us

1:02:20Paddy McGuinness:oh god Gary Speed

1:02:22Nicky Butt:yeah Gary Speed number 6 535 you've got two left now Shearer 7 and 8 no Shearer no

1:02:29Paul Scholes:Batty no McAllister Gerrard

1:02:33Nicky Butt:I'll give you a clue one of them's a keeper and the other one you played with David Seaman international David Seaman no Ashley Cole no up front Michael Owen

1:02:51Paul Scholes:Heskey

1:02:52Nicky Butt:Heskey yeah 516 bloody hell the last one at number 8 is a goalkeeper

1:02:59Paddy McGuinness:give the better for Kinal

1:03:01Paul Scholes:goalkeeper Peter Cech has he been on here

1:03:04Paddy McGuinness:Jay yeah he's a good shot actually no

1:03:11Nicky Butt:Mark Schwarzer oh right I would never have 514 not a bad effort

1:03:17Paddy McGuinness:though was it we got one wrong

1:03:18Nicky Butt:I tell you what that was a good shout that right this is off Stephen if you could change the outcome of one match during your career which match would you choose England-Brazil quarter final World Cup oh was that the Ronaldinho one

1:03:38Paddy McGuinness:yeah and we were winning 1-0 weren't we yeah only because we didn't play well enough in that game and like they probably deserved to win but just look at the when we look at the opposition in the semi-final in the final I think it was Turkey then Germany I think it would have been and we beat Turkey about three times in the two years previous we played them in the playoffs as well didn't we was it a playoff Fancy was against them and Germany they weren't the best German team if you're being honest and that one sticks there there's a few obviously Dortmund Dortmund Man United Dortmund Champions League that's fucking heart-wrenching that yeah tough question there's so many games you would change I think that Brazil won purely because of the fact it was the World Cup as well

1:04:24Paul Scholes:I'll probably say Barcelona in the Champions League final at Wembley

1:04:28Nicky Butt:yeah fucking hell the games you two have played in it's mad bad Sir has been on she's a fan by the it's not just someone who's like sir has been on I said sir Sarah if each of you were abandoned on a desert island oh this is for the three of us who would survive the longest and why you are you are naked definitely I won't last two minutes why not are you just one of them who has to have everything done for you I just need a tally

1:04:59Paul Scholes:in front of me see that's why I think

1:05:02Nicky Butt:he would last the longest he's happy just fucking curtains closed isn't he yeah no but he's cozy

1:05:07Paddy McGuinness:there's no desert islands in Alden you can't get out of Alden there's too much sunlight there's no curtains he's fucked

1:05:13Nicky Butt:how are you like no curtains he's fucking doing are you one of these where you know I think you two

1:05:20Paul Scholes:would be stubborn as fuck you'd live for about 50 years you two none of you would give up he's got a point

1:05:28Paddy McGuinness:I'd fancy myself actually you'd have to have a fight I'd have a good go I'd be alright I'd go fishing I'd do everything fishing yeah fucking fishing last week yeah I want that shitty one you're on about last week the fishing with the little fucking rod although I got pulled up because I said putting a rod in it and it's actually apparently the hook that goes in some fucking

1:05:45Nicky Butt:told you it's not as straightforward as you're some strange people out there isn't it

1:05:48Paddy McGuinness:but yeah I reckon I reckon I'd be alright I'd give me I wouldn't want to do it but I'd alright then me and you could go on one of them islands knowing the way you're the fucking I think there's a TV show in this Love Island not a love island yeah that's it what's that one not a survival one when you go in a team I think you're going on Love Island oh naked and afraid

1:06:07Nicky Butt:I don't know the story

1:06:08Paul Scholes:I don't know the story

1:06:09Nicky Butt:I'd be fucking afraid if he were naked at the sound of him I'm very afraid it's I think are you one of them you know like sometimes you get like power cut or whatever at your house do you always have the candles in and all that no see I do what's what a candle for just in case the grid goes down

1:06:28Paddy McGuinness:head torch head torch you walk around with a head torch

1:06:31Nicky Butt:go and ask me bed candles you should always have a box of candles in your house you should always have them anyway you might not have a torch what happens if you've run out of batteries what happens if you've not got a candle well that's the part of me saying you need candles in your house you'd have batteries in your fucking house as well wouldn't you what do you do on fucking birthday stick fucking 20 torches on top of your cake you always have candles in here you're walking out of the torches he's walking

1:06:53Paddy McGuinness:out of the baby candles not a big one fucking hell fire

1:06:58Nicky Butt:right here we go this is from Mark Rank these wingers 1-3 Best at first

1:07:08Paddy McGuinness:Oh that's fucking tricky

1:07:09Nicky Butt:Eden Hazard Gareth Bale Mohamed Salah That's a really tricky one I'm going Bale Hazard Salah

1:07:19Paul Scholes:Hazard was definitely The most talented But that doesn't mean You're the best winger Does it?

1:07:24Nicky Butt:No no

1:07:24Paul Scholes:Probably Gareth Bale's won Five Champions League That's why he's number one I'd say Gareth Bale

1:07:29Nicky Butt:Just on what he's won Gareth Bale Salah Hazard I'd go Bale Hazard Soller Oh Right Okay then 2-1 there Right Well We've come to the end of the pod And the main takeaway points for me Here Is You two Are back in City To win the league And you can't change your mind Next week

1:07:50Paul Scholes:And he has been for 10 months Now his arse is gone It's not gone

1:07:53Nicky Butt:I just think Sometimes You get a feeling about a team And Arsenal Just Sometimes they're going to do it

1:08:02Paul Scholes:you know what happened sometimes you get a feeling of about five points clear

1:08:06Nicky Butt:nine games to go don't you okay now well you two seem to think it would be City and hey and can I just put it on record

1:08:14Paddy McGuinness:I'd love for City to win the league what's this northern stuff when you're a Bolton fan years ago not like this superstar you are now you never want to want Man United to win it and that's northern you can understand why we want Arsenal to win it did you want Man United to ever win a championship well of course no

1:08:28Nicky Butt:well I did if they were Really?

1:08:32Paddy McGuinness:As a Bolton fan you wanted us to win the Premier League back in the 90s.

1:08:36Nicky Butt:I would sooner have it's a bit of a stubborn thing a team from the north west of England winning the league as opposed to a southern team. That's just me. We've got allegiances though haven't we? Well yeah but you two I mean I didn't realise how much you dislike City. I thought Arsenal were your number one dislike. I don't dislike the place

1:08:58Paddy McGuinness:but I love the some of the players watching him play football and I love Pep but you brought up you could throw a tennis ball to the City Stadium where I'm from do not want City to win anything ever we love fucking ever no look

1:09:12Paul Scholes:watching Pep's team we absolutely love that Paddy but as Nicky said if you just dropped him off the moon and you said do you want City or Arsenal to win the league it'd be Arsenal

1:09:21Paddy McGuinness:and I've got about 10 mates with City fans we're having a bit of banter together you've got City tattoos haven't you City tattoo apparently yeah fucking hate City

1:09:27Nicky Butt:it was funny innit like that City thing come about with you like everyone presumed you were a City fan apparently I've got

1:09:34Paddy McGuinness:a City tattoo on my arm or something

1:09:36Nicky Butt:hey I've got to say it's a nice t-shirt that's not

1:09:39Paddy McGuinness:that's not Primark is it

1:09:40Nicky Butt:look at that it's a bit of quality is that a race shut up what is it what's wrong with race sorry race

1:09:47Paddy McGuinness:it's Tesco George yeah I'm fucking sure it is but yeah I honestly Pep love what he's done for football I think whenever you meet is a gentleman top blow and the player I love De Bruyne I love Roger I love John Ston but as a local lad Man United fan you don't want City to do anything and I'm pretty sure they'd never want us to do anything it's not a

1:10:09Nicky Butt:I was going to say so just to get this right at the end of the podcast I want City to win but I don't think they will you two think City will win but you don't want to win

1:10:20Paddy McGuinness:total opposite we are

1:10:21Nicky Butt:and I'm saying Arsenal are going to do it I just I've got a feeling now nine games left I think Andy Collar will be top goal scorer this year. When do Arsenal play City? Good question. April.

1:10:35Paul Scholes:Early April, is it? Late April.

1:10:37Nicky Butt:Late April. That's the one. And also, it's Master against Apprentice, isn't it? Pep against Arteta. It is. Oh, it's exciting. That's it for today's The Good, The Bad and The Football. You can catch us on all usual channels, Spotify, YouTube and Apple.

Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt & Paddy McGuinness discuss Michael Carrick's long-term future at Manchester United after he equalled the record for best opening nine games as a Premier League. They also discuss what being the Manchester United manager requires.

After a weekend where Manchester City & Arsenal both won, attention turns to the title race, with Paddy changing his mind on who he think will come out on top! Paul & Nicky debate the importance of set-pieces in the modern game and give their thoughts on Arsenal set-piece coach Nico Jover having a bonus in his contract for every set piece scored.

The boys then answer some incredible audience questions, including who would survive the longest on a desert island and ranking Eden Hazard, Gareth Bale & Mohamed Salah.
