In short

Manchester United’s 2-0 home loss to Hull; why promoted teams can shock big clubs; Man United’s midfield recruitment/fitness issues; the “fear” factor in modern management; and debate over Gary Neville’s criticism of Liverpool strikers Isak and Verts.

Guests (backgrounds)

Paul Scholes (ex-Man United midfielder, elite Premier League player); Dion Dublin (ex-England and Manchester United striker, later pundit/coach); Michael Owen is referenced as a prior guest/pundit on the show.

Key claims

  • Hull deserved the win; United were “shell-shocked” and not ready.
  • Promoted teams’ physicality and set-piece focus can punish big clubs early.
  • Modern pre-season/fitness is less intense due to injury-risk monitoring; players may take 5-6 games to fully click.
  • Man United’s midfield balance/pressure demands are different; current recruitment hasn’t matched past standards.
  • Neville is right to demand more from Isak/Verts, but injuries and lack of chances matter.
  • Fear/authority from managers still matters; teammates’ accountability can be more intimidating than the manager.

Notable examples

  • Scholes’ own injury rehab moment (a tackle vs Scholes) as a “mental breakthrough.”
  • Hull’s set-piece goals; Maguire’s confusing defensive moment leading to Hull’s first.
  • Liverpool targeting full-back areas; Isak/Verts struggling for rhythm and service.

0:00Welcome to the good, the bad and the football, sponsored by Midnight, the betting app that's built different. Today, Nicky Butt isn't here. He's, uh, surprise, surprise, on holiday again. We're not saying Nicky Butt goes on a lot of holidays, but he's been in more airports than a sniffer dog. He's actually got his own lane. Hey, leave my mate alone. He's a normal lane, a priority lane. He's a Nicky Butler lane. Go through and touch his name. It's like I'm feeling when you're open. Oh, but what a sub we've brought in, folks. Dion Dublin. Welcome, my mate. Good to see you, pal. Good to see you. You all right?

0:45Cheers, Dion. Thank you, mate. Oh, Dion, I'm glad you're here. But before we get into the football chat, I've got to say, how long would it... it's got to be well over six or seven years ago I'm sit down on the couch as I do and there's an afternoon flick on the telly last morning mid morning yeah mid morning kind of thing and home's under the hammer honestly I was literally in the kitchen and I was Alice time's arrived but Deanne he's buying an house he's in an auction and I went no he's hang on he's doing it he's doing it how did that come about arms under the hammer you know what that is 11 years yeah I knew it was a long time ago it's crazy it came about because I've been doing property now for I started my property portfolio in 1992 when I signed here at United bloody hell bought a house in Cheshire then I bought two houses in Coventry and I went to Coventry went to Villa bought two houses in Warwickshire and then in my portfolio was there and I'm thinking this is making and if you quit this.

1:54Yeah. I thought, I'll keep them. And I just carried on doing it. And they knew that I was renovating houses and all that kind of stuff. And the BBC just came to me. They literally said to me, there's a cameraman. There's a house in Salford. Have a walk around it and we'll tell you what we think afterwards. Like a pilot. Yeah, like a pilot. I thought to myself, I can wing this. I can wing this. I just didn't turn me back on the camera. I just kept talking to the camera and I thought, I'll get this a little bit of damp. Oh, look, you're brilliant at doing it. but it was just such a like you just don't see like an ex-pro you're watching this go it's a good pro yeah it's one of them that where you flick the telly on at that time and you said and it's just on that and Dickinson's real deal and I'm like well that's me sat down for half hour you're waiting for the finished product aren't you yeah sometimes the sky plus it well come on alright we know two bedrooms all that we know all that let's have a look at it finished what's it worth yeah and I always love it when they go, what's your budget?

2:53And they go, 8p. And then they go, what did you spend? And then they go, 60 grand. You're like, all right, we can all do that. I will tell you sometimes, I shouldn't do it, but I have to do it sometimes because I'm trying to help them out. Yeah. And they do exactly that. I go, so what's your budget? Because you've got your windows to do, the driveway needs to be done, the back garden's an absolute mess. What's your budget?

3:18About 5, 10 grand. Okay. stop the camera stop the camera and I literally stopped the camera and said listen the windows are going to cost you 10 12 grand this is at 30 40 grand so what you've got to say is say I think 30 or 40 if you come in at 8 pence brilliant but you won't let's go again so what's your budget we think about 35 40 because I can't let them look stupid so you try and help them out sometimes hey shall we talk football lads yes come on oh I'm Very excited to start with this because certain P McGuinness last week made a prediction and everyone laughed at me. Hull 2, Manchester United 0.

4:01What, is that what you said? No, I said it. No, I think so, no. What did you say? Never lets me get any word in sideways before he comes in with a slanderous statement. Slanderous. I said when we were talking about who's going to go down who's going to stay up I said I don't think Hull are as big as a pushover as you Nicky and Michael Owen were going Hull they're down it's game over I said I'm not sure I said I think the way they came up I'm not sure that's what you said I'm not sure I said the way they came up I said I think they're going to be alright what happens they're coming up against the mighty Reds and absolutely Mullerum lads two former United players here firstly thoughts honestly before the game did you did you kind of think this is just going to be a walk in the park no no I didn't I expected Man United to win the game I didn't expect Hull to win the game at all but I knew they'd come out and they'd give it everything it's just there's two ways when you come up you either go for it or you sit back and see what happens they didn't they went for it I think United were a little bit shell-shocked Hull deserved to win the game let's get it right they were better in every aspect but I didn't expect Hull to get anything out of the game not point wise anyway No I agree you expect Man United to win that game of course you do and you did Really?

5:29But when you look back and think about it a promoted team they're still on a high Yeah I mean Do you know what Michael said? That home especially the ground will still be absolutely bouncing it was and I think they probably they looked a really physical team to me I think they've had a look at what Sunderland did last year I thought that this is the way to go and they looked a big strong they looked a fit team against an unfit team and they looked like they'd worked and they looked like they were ready to be prepared for it and especially when championship teams set pieces we talk about set pieces a lot with Arsenal Premier League but in the championship they're massive on them and I think it was two set pieces that they conceded Michael Owen who was on last week he said we promoted teams to Europa he said you almost want to play them when they've had about six or seven games and they've had their stuffing knocked out of them and their heads are down he said but that first game you don't want to face them because they are like especially on their ground yeah exactly because you you still aren't high on you from getting yourself up and the fans are thinking here we go this is great and the players are thinking can't let the fans down and United unfortunately when having been in both camps whereas the smaller football club and the bigger football club when you're in the bigger football club if you drop your guard.

6:45They weren't ready, were they? They weren't ready. They didn't look ready for the game. Why is that? That amazes me as a fan of football when they go, you know, pre-season. I'm like, surely that's your job. You're a professional footballer. You've got to be fit as a fiddle for game one and ready to go. I've never understood that as a fan. Well, I think the players have made a couple of comments about it. I think Telemans came out and said, I don't think we've done enough work on the training ground. Running-wise, why is that is that because Michael has a different way every manager has a different way it's changed massively look I've been involved with Solversy in pre-season it feels like running's almost gone out of the game not gone out of the game but we used to do mad runs like you cross country runs up sand hills and all this kind of stuff that doesn't seem because the support of science is it's so involved in football everything's about not getting injured make sure you get through it so sometimes that levelling I think it could take five or six games for clubs to get going really I think City were a great example of that under Pep they hardly had pre-season games he might have two pre-season games because he knows once it comes to January that's when my players have got to be ready and you've got to remember players like players that Pep had are training against each other so they're playing against the best players in the league anyway when they train so you might as well play against each other because when you play against your opponent they're not as good as us yeah i just sorry paddy i just i just think it's i agree with you it's you can't go into the start of the season and think oh a bit sluggish yeah but you can only do what you're allowed to do on the training pitch yeah if they don't allow you to run and what they do everything's off your your monitors now isn't it and everything's off a screen yeah oh team he's in the red there team slow down a little bit would you stop running around imagine that Nick he said that a few weeks back he said like there's that many figures and stats of things going on in the players head no we just got the end of that really I don't know if you got it yeah I just got the end of it with the little backpacks and I ate it at me every time you went in Alpha I was always the worst one I was always low down but I was trying quite well there you still have a good game your stats and how far you've run slow down don't run too much don't go over there don't do that But players now, sport scientists, set up performances, they're obsessed with all this to get the best out of you.

9:11Before we started, you were saying about you used to do runs up the sand dunes and how that carry on. Do you think there's that much money now in the modern game that that kind of training might be seen as an injury risk? Maybe. The players are a bit more wrapped in cotton wool now. Listen, I don't think any club will do that anymore. There's many professional clubs that will go, let's go to Sandu's and let's do two miles there we'll do four miles and you have to you know it's a bit archaic however it didn't do us that you know Cambridge United we had four years we had four very good years and we were going running on Sandu's going up beaches army barracks where you're carrying backpacks and stuff you know on a back did anyone ever pick up injuries in them sessions by the way well they would have done but you know you are that you're that into it that you don't get any injuries yeah you might get one or two but when you're that into it and you're told you've got to do it it's like all right boss whatever you need i think one thing you have to second account was all the world cup uh it's a little bit messy with players coming back from the amount of some some of our players might have only been training for a week i think like bruno maybe two weeks they might only be coming man you you've been sass on on on a bench i can't get made around that yeah no look you speak about recruitment and i saw the central midfield the other day and I thought that is no better than last year I mean when you're recruiting players and looking for a different team you think I've got to get better now to me on Saturday that wasn't better than Cobby, Maina and Casabiro together agreed now bringing sorry about bringing the lad Beliba in now aren't they yeah I don't think he had a great year last year maybe he was unsettled I don't know the year before he looked a good player and they were talking about 115 million now all of a sudden it's come down to 60, 70 million but he's a bit more physical the difference is and I don't care what anybody in football says I don't care how good you are at your football club when you go and do it at United especially in that middle of the park where you have to make things work it's different the pressure is different I was going to say the pressure yeah yeah the pressure you've got to be you've got to be the one yeah Man United scoring goals incredibly different defending don't concede yeah but in the middle of the park you think of the players that we have had around the Scoles area and Robbo.

11:31We can go back all the way if you want. They have a heartbeat of the team. We're just talking about this current team and the first goal Hull scored. Do you see Maguire? Are you sort of like Viral and Maslow here? Yeah. No. I still, I'm still trying to get my head around what was going on there. I don't know. Don't ask me. I like to think because Harry I like him I think he's how he's handled himself at United with especially the stuff that's happened in the past excellent you know he's he's dug in there but the only thing I can think is he was trying to go don't do that you're going to give away a penalty or something or you're going to no what's happened I think he's just lost his bearings I don't know but it's your own player I know but I don't think he's looking at the player he's looking at the ball isn't it and funny enough there I'd have he's got like a fucking white shirt on I know Paddy but I'm trying to explain I don't know what's going on I don't know it's impossible the only thing he can think is he's lost his bearings and he's looking at the ball and he can feel somebody in front of him and he's just going like that that's the only thing he can think of because I think if he hadn't had that instinct then he might have been able to stop the goal or kick the ball away but he just sort of froze and looked and he's hugging his mate and they're going to score in a minute.

12:59Who, by the way, was trying to get his... He's like that, trying to get his ball. He's like... But he's not even turned around to him and gone, what are you doing? It doesn't look good, does it? I'd like to hear him explain it. Yeah, I would as well. I think it's an instinct thing. It's got to be. Because he's not doing that. He can't be doing that consciously. He can't. Give a hug. At the time when he's going to score a goal.

13:25You were talking a few pods back And we were talking about Michael Carrick Being in contention for getting Contention for getting the job full time And one of the things you said Was I was saying Why don't they just give him the job And you were saying Well sometimes when you're an interim manager You're the player's mate a little bit more You don't have to make as big a decision So they'll play for you Do you think Nosey's got the job It's exactly what you were saying where they go, oh, he's not got the same relationship with them now. Yeah, it can change. The relationship probably will change.

14:05I kept saying last year when they were doing really well, once this job becomes serious, not serious because obviously it's serious, but once it becomes real, that's when the hardest time is to start winning your game. and especially from now till Christmas because that's the time when these games are most important because they're the ones that put you in position to now look we don't think they've got a team to win a league I think if Michael was honest he'd probably admit that but I think he would have been optimistic from last year but like I said this is the most important these are the big ones now these are the ones where I have to you almost you underestimated a little bit when he came into the job last time And people don't really care about you because you're so far down in the league.

14:51So, you know, you get a bit of benefit from that. But now all of a sudden, everyone's on a fresh start. The light's back on in a minute. The light's back on. And all of a sudden, so if you get off to the start you did towards the end of last season, you could be potential winners of the league now. I don't think any of us think that, especially with performance light. You can see, you still know they've got them performances in it. So this is the most important time now for Michael to make sure he gets it right. I suppose the friend or colleague issue that he had while he was in interim, I suppose the hardest thing now is, now he is permanent, he's got to sever those connections now, which I think would be hard for someone like Michael because he's a nice bloke.

15:36But unfortunately, now you're the manager, you've got to sever that. How are you doing, pal? How's it going, mate? Fancy going for a beer? You can't do that anymore. I'm the manager, you're that. Do as you're told. You've got to sever those relationships, which I think you might find hard. And do you think things like, because Bruno come out after the game and he said, I'm quoting back here, same mistakes as last season. Isn't that what pre-season's for? Is that an example of what you just said where already this is thing now where Michael's the manager, he's the captain who seems like... He can't even stop Bruno, it seems.

16:10I'd be interested to know what it means, but what mistakes were they giving set-piece goals away? do you think there's something do you know what especially when you perform the way you did as well yeah I think it's probably best to keep your mouth say nothing keep your mouth shut yeah because he didn't have his best performance either and there was quite a few of them like that I think a few Luke Shaw said Luke Shaw always says something which is that's a slight on your staff it is that's a slight on your manager if one of your players is saying that you'd have him in Monday morning wouldn't you yeah you would you would what do you mean by that Yeah, you'd want silence, unfortunately.

16:46If your skipper has to speak, then your skipper speaks. Then you make sure he says the things that don't open a can of worms. Yeah. And you say the right things. You just don't give anybody any ammunition because the ammunition's there from your performance. And every single player, yeah. Them comments as we talked about there, not so much respect, but you speak about fear of managers sometimes. Yeah. And them things they've said, they're a slight on the manager and staff. And also... As a player, if we did that about Sir Alex we weren't prepared or kiddo or kiddo you'd be right in and he'd probably single you out in front of the full team definitely Tillemans said obviously he's only just signed they haven't been doing much running in trails he looked like that as well didn't he Tillemans is a brilliant footballer on the ball but mobility is not his strength and it doesn't matter and Scholes you'll bat me at 100 % it doesn't matter how good you are if you can't get about the pitch you're stuffed yeah the first thing is run about sweat yeah give everything and then when you get the ball show us how good you are yeah if you can't get about the pitch is that down to the players not doing enough running possibly you did look unfit though possibly the Telemans especially now again he might not have been in training for so long yeah you might get the benefit for him in five to six games but if you want to keep saying win the league which we don't think we can you've got to be ready for the world got the word what you won't get what you won't get is though Teeleban's saying what you won't get is Gaffer can we do some running you won't get that can we do some running I don't feel fit enough let's do loads of running you won't get that Paddy can I just ask what is the issue with Kobe minor absolutely no idea now you lads are united through and through and you know him far better than I would but even me I'm like what is it with him because he did great for England he was doing great for United he was yeah Amarin comes in all that stops and then from then it's been like I still I have still no idea why he took him to the World Cup if he never even had one thing in his mind about playing him not even in that fucking nonsense game we played in at the end he never played him then they did say he was injured whether it was or not I don't know but they did say he was injured for that game I'm waiting I'm thinking to myself right if Cobby's not playing I'm thinking okay they brought somebody in fair enough your prerogative yeah but only if they're better players that's my point they're not okay let's see if he's better yeah oh he's not no yeah and you think well what's the point is it I don't know Cobby well enough to say his attitude stinks or he's not good enough I can't imagine that I can't imagine that he doesn't seem that we've seen that he's good enough yeah yeah and from what I can see he's not rocking the boat he's not in the papers he's not making statements so he must be doing something right that might be his problem you know not saying anything yeah just being quiet that's ok he's not playing now I'm pretty sure he will be angry inside of course have we not learnt this lesson from the first half of last season when he didn't play and they were terrible they weren't very good now Michael brought him into the team I still don't think he was amazing when he came into the team but he was better than what we've got they've just spent 90 million on two midfield players another 60-70 million on another player midfield player he's better than all three of them Just what you were saying about one of the things might be he's not being vocal enough or you know how players do now they make it go and they're not okay It does go against you It does sometimes But do you think it was something you were both talking about a moment ago with the interim manager and then the actual manager when they get the job in modern football it feels to me like you know you two played under Sir Alex Ferguson and it's well documented how he run that club and his word was final.

20:46Has that gone in the modern game? Are managers not as... I use the word fear, but I don't mean like you're terrified. But we were. I was going to say, we were. We were. We were terrified. But has that gone out of the game? No, players know with social media and the money that's involved and they just think, oh, manager will be gone before me. Yeah, I've not seen any of that fear within a player as in doing something wrong. It happened to me, stoke away in a cup game. I missed about five chances in the first half. Sharpies crossing in his carpet. I'm thinking, oh God, it's going up there. I'm heading it's going up there.

21:24I can't hit a barn. I'm an absolute stinker. Normally at half time, you'll go in and you go, gee, I've got to do better. And the lads will normally come over to you and the lads normally put an arm around you, intsy and all that. And he's like, they all avoided me. all avoided me so I've walked in at half time honestly walked in at half time the boys were sat here they just moved away I'm pretending to do me laces up the last person that comes in is the gaffer I'm thinking oh no he's walking towards me fucking hell he honestly walks towards me goes straight towards me puts his head there and he just shouts all over me face all over me face and the lads are chuckling his shoulders are going like that behind kiddo and all the lads are laughing I'm thinking oh gosh so I wipe everything out of me eyes, walk out for the second half, 1-1-0, I scored the only goal.

22:12Lovely. Now the moral of the story is he knows who to do it to. He knew I was a strong Englishman. He wouldn't do it to many, you know, seven or eight in the dressing room could get away with it. But the fear factor is I've got to deliver at this football club in my position. A lot of players go, oh gosh, I'm HR. Yeah, HR. Do you know what I mean? It's not in the game anymore because that's what would happen. Yeah. That's what players are like now they can't handle and do you know what I think the manager realised that towards the end I love fear I love you have to play with girls I love being scared a bit of a reflection on modern society everyone's the same everyone's a little bit like oh it's like the same with your kids when you're bothered with your kids they can't handle it can they they can't allow us to jerk back dad keep it I'm watching something here on YouTube but back in our era I love being scared I don't think you'd be the same player if you wasn't scared now?

23:09And I think our manager realised that's why, especially with a lot of foreign players coming in. Yeah. Because I remember being in our dressing room, Cristiano Ronaldo's, bloody Nani's, Anderson's, and the manager's going mad. It's always one of the English lads. Yeah, yeah. So it's always one of them. And I can see their faces looking, what the fuck is going on in here? Do you know what I mean? So it's gone out of modern players. Now you can't really do it. When he had that close to your face, and you scored the goal, does he say anything to you after then? Like, as in, patch you on the back?

23:41Well done. Yeah. That's it. But that well done... That well done is huge. That well done for another manager. He was excellent. That's amazing. Well done. But the gaff says, hey, big man, well done. Yeah. And you think, million dollars. Yeah. Million dollars, you know. It's great. Any managers now? Sorry, you talk about the six, seven, eight clubs. You look at it now and think, would I be scared of him? I was going to say, no, If you're in the Premier League, is there any manager where you'd be like, probably David Moyes, maybe. Do you not think? Yeah, not through the ranting and the raving, but just through the respect thing and how long he's done the game.

24:18I think you'd give him that element of respect because he's deserved it. He's been in the game a long time. How do you think the young managers are going to go on? There's a lot in the Premier League now, isn't there? If you look at the lad who's two-quarter at Newcastle and you've got Brighton's manager who seems to be doing brilliant. He looks a little bit, I think you would be a little bit scared of him. this one and the Brighton one Hurtzler is it is that because of the syrup it looks a bit like V he blows off when he's out oh he's got new hair he's got new hair no it does look like I think you'd I'd want to play for him I think he'd give me a little bit of edge I think Arteta would probably give me a little bit of edge and looking back over the last few years I think I'd be scared of Guardiola I think I'd be scared of Jurgen Klopp Klonti Ancelotti I probably would be scared of Antibag Darchi physically I think have I Darchi I've had Dutch as my captain at Mooroo.

25:08I just did as I was told. All right. No, you wouldn't. I think they would strike a bit of fear. Yeah. And funnily enough, they're the ones who've got the best out of their players. True. Do you know what I mean? Who's around now, though? Who would? There's not many around now. Deserby a little bit. I think Deserby's got a little bit of... Fucking hell, he looks a bit... A bit too small to get that off me. It's not for me. I think what you just said then about Teta, I think he probably has a little bit of that over the place. because he's quite a serious character. You don't see him laughing and joking.

25:38No, no, no. Yeah, I've got that. And you've got, you see the other thing as well, what Scoles you mentioned is, you mentioned the Man United players and some players have said, listen, we're not fit enough or this is not right. You wouldn't be saying that. No. If you had a fear of the manager, you would not say anything like that. So you'd think, oh, what can I say? Yeah, we weren't too good. You'd keep it a little bit generic. You wouldn't dig anybody out and you'd say, hold it a minute, the gaffer's going to kill me if I say that. Yeah, I don't think it's, again, social media, so bloody prolific throughout the game now and it causes so many problems but that first game of United they lose 2-0 and you have two or three players if you're Michael Carrick when saying what they're saying I don't think it's a good look straight away it's a terrible look yeah it's a terrible look he's got to deal with it do you?

26:25no he will do and the only thing the only good thing that's going to come out of that is they can't be that bad again yeah they cannot be that bad again because you know they will be we say that Put yourself in the mirror. You know what I mean? It's like... We say that, but there's not a lot of change. Man Utd have still got the same about four or five years ago. Yeah. So sometimes, what do you expect? That's what I'm saying. You've got to have a look at yourself. It isn't going to change. If you don't change the players and personnel there, it's probably not going to change. One of the hardest things is, you mentioned the fear towards the manager.

26:53We had fear towards each other. Yeah. And I think a lot of that's gone now because if you're... If Harry Maguire's hugging Masraoui for whatever reason, instinct or... Gosh, I didn't know what I was doing. I didn't know where I was. And you can see the goal like that. You're going to get dog's abuse in the dressing room from your teammate. That's scarier than getting it from the manager because we had to hold our players accountable. If Scolese pings the ball into me and it bounces off of me and it goes to an opponent's midfield player, he's going to have a go at me because he can't get up the pitch.

27:29If you're conceding goals, you have a go. That doesn't happen anymore. do you know what has got like reputation where he's the one bollocking you all the time and the hairdryer and all this stuff the biggest bollocking you had was you from your teammates and I'm telling you growing up in that team with Dion's team Paulins Roy Keane Steve Bruce if you were getting fucking bollocks in the dressing room and even when the later teams people like real behind you and you'd have a go at each other you'd be arguing all the time you'd be fighting all the time I've seen Roy Keane it might have been on the overlap talking once about that very thing saying half the time it wasn't the gaffer he said we sorted out amongst ourselves you know what I mean you're like you're all each other accountable well Roy was the manager on the pitch yeah yeah he was and we had many managers on the pitch look at how many went to go and manage Steve Bruce Brian Robson all the Paul Inns all the ones you mentioned yeah they're the ones who struck the biggest fear into you as well as the manager don't get me wrong yeah of course but your teammates he overseen everything United United, when, again, players' lounge, I've not seen a players' lounge in a modern stadium for years.

28:36Our players' lounge was about, I don't know, two yards away from the dressing room. We walked 20 steps and there you go. Yeah. And what all your wives were going for. Very small, I've been in there. Yeah, tiny. Not what I thought you were going to be. No, no, no. You expected it to be more lavish. Yeah. However. Shit all is the word I wanted. Whoa, whoa, whoa. I look at that far. It was like this. It was like this. This is funny. I went in, I went. Is this the world's biggest club here? Where's the marble floor? Dion's going to bow you this, isn't he? Tell us what he's changed. All right, Dion, we're in there knocking back wall out at United.

29:12We can put an extension on this, lads, for God's sake. Bye-folding doors at the back. What it was, though, what would happen is we'd go into this player's lounge, wives and girlfriends and kids and all that kind of stuff. We'd have a drink, whether it's gone well or not gone well. Brian Robson would keep me in there for a good two or three hours. And we'd have a DB. No, we'd have a beer. Get me wrong, we'd have a beer. More often than not, one. Which is when you have your biggest DBs, when you win so you don't get complacent. But we'd just chat to each other. He'd say to me, you've got to hold it up and hold your man off.

29:43And I'd think, well, I've got to do that next time. And Robert would say, Pally, do this. And, you know, it's all about the players. We'd sort it out ourselves. The last one is, I come from Cambridge United, by the way. I've gone from the bottom with all due respect, size of football club, to the top of the tree. And what happens is when you go and play with the best, and I had it with some players at Coventry, some players at Villa, Celtic, what they do, and they know they're doing it, but when you're in training, they will give you a ball to control, which they wouldn't give you in a match to see if they could trust you or not.

30:18Right. You know, so they'd bobble it in. We used to call it scudding. So they scud it into me. It's bouncing away. Yeah. I've got Palli or Brucie, and I'm holding it up and I'm fighting away I think I've got to hold it to the ball and fight it away and the ball stays there him and you know Robbo and Keely are going you'll be alright you'll be alright you'll be alright you know what I mean because it's a test because if I can handle that then I'll be able to handle a match day because on a match day it's going to be pinged and on the floor lovely and that trust element so it's all about the standards that they are setting for me and I've got to make sure I set the same standards that's always a big thing about the manager when I trust a person next to you and sometimes you couldn't As Deion says.

30:55Is that right? Yeah, trust the people. But I suppose in teams like you two played and those are quickly weeded out, those kind of players. Yeah. They can't deal with the pressure or they can't deal with it because of the quality. Yeah. Those are some of the best team charts a manager ever did. I don't know if Deion, I don't know if he'd have been there. Sometimes he just used to walk in and say, trust the person next to you and then walk out. I don't know if he ever did that with Deion but he did that with us a few times. It was brilliant. And what happens if you look at the side against Poborski?

31:25Well, one of them is Gary Neville. One was Phil. I'm only joking. Of course I do. No, but no, it gives you that little bit of belief, don't I? Yeah, of course. And you know what? Funnily enough, you do look at it. Who is it? Giggsie there. David Beckham. Oh, wow. I'm all right. Yeah, I'll be all right today. Now it's time for the Built Different Index. Football's alternative league table Powered by our friends at midnight The betting app that's built different I'm joined by One of the elite Mr Paul Scholes How are you Paul Scholes? I'm good mate, how are you? I'm very good thank you Very excited to get your thoughts on this one Because this is a bit of you Firstly What did you want From someone partnering you in midfield?

32:17Someone who could run Yeah because I couldn't so do you know what I love somebody knew the position yeah I was lucky enough to play with a lot of because I was brought up as a center forward really so I never really knew the full mechanics of being a central midfield player and I was lucky enough to play with Nicky who's on here yeah knew the position brought up there played there Roy Keane yeah obviously Michael Carrick they were just absolutely ideal of me I needed somebody that could cover my traits that weren't good, especially defensively. So if you're looking at now, Premier League as we're speaking, who would you pick at the current crop to be at the side of you?

33:03Probably, and I know I've not always been complimentary about people like Declan Rice and Kai Cedo, but they'd be the ones who'd suit me the most. Now look, if I had a Tiedemann, a Cobb in mine or a Santos or someone it just wouldn't it wouldn't work yeah with Declan Rice at the side of your box to the box I'd love that yeah Declan Rice Cursido that type of the ones I really needed to play with the Deccas if you're watching finally got him pay you a compliment you're welcome Deccas he wouldn't want to play with me so it would be your perfect midfield two based on like the players now you just mentioned Declan Rice or Cassidor if you were playing but which two would you put together now in the Premier League which two would I put together now in the Premier League I'm a big fan of Tonale I've already mentioned that I know it probably didn't go great for him the other day kiss of death yeah probably Declan Rice and Tonale together I'd quite like to see that right okay that's an Arsenal Tottenham thing now isn't it so that's going to be a bit lively but I think them two together yeah I'd like that give us your top five current Premier League midfielders this is good this you can do them in any order you want you can go 5-1 or 1-5 do you want me to read a few out from the sort of no I don't know I think I've got Brynhoff and I would you class him as a midfield player I've got him as a number 10 me oh Cherky like Cherky where is he then do you want to say five and then we'll figure out I'll say five yeah

34:50Jerk is in Declan Rice loving this isn't it but I'm more of me I'll have one defensive midfield it would be Declan Rice right okay God I like a few Morgan Rogers again he's here forward Cole Palmer is here forward and I was just going to say because you are so unaware of your standing in the game and what you've achieved you these midfielders if they're watching this podcast in their hotel room they'll be thinking please pick me Paul Scholes so don't just flippantly put it out though you've got Declan Rice you've got Cherky yeah

35:35I'll put Bruno Fernandes in that I think what he does is assist record and goals I think he has to be involved do you know what's funny when you say he feels like Emma's number 10 though I thought Emma's a midfield player but also because he's been there for a while it's funny it feels like I go oh yeah he feels like old to me am I counting number 10 Cole Palmer to me is number 10 Morgan Rodgers is number 10 if they're on this list you can count them you've got two so far yeah I'll put Tonali in there I know he's not are the greatest to start a tournament. I need to. I love Phil Foden. I like their number 10s to play with though.

36:16Yeah. So, if it was up to me, I'd pick five number 10s. I'm going to pick five number 10s who you class as midfielders. Go on then. I love playing with Dwight York, Teddy Sheringham. Yeah. But Tevez, Wayne Rooney, them types are number 10s. I'm going to pick all number 10s. Go on then. Older guard. I'd love to play with him. Right. Cole Palmer. I'd love to play with him. You know, I just, I know what they want and they know what I want. Yeah. Morgan Rodgers, not so much in that. Bruno Fernandes is in that, so that's three. I love Kovacic. I think Kovacic is brilliant, but again, not a number 10.

36:59Cherky, I said that, didn't I? Is that four? That's four. God, it's hard. I didn't realize how hard this would be. So you've took Declan Rice out now? No, do you know what? I'm going to leave Declan Rice in. Right, so you've got Declan Rice, Cherky, Cole Palmer. Aldegarde. Aldegarde. Bruno Fernandes. Right. They are five great players as well. Yeah, excellent. And do you know what? I could have chose quite a few. Cobb with my eye. I love Cobb with my eye. But again, we wouldn't be good together. No. No, absolutely not. You knows what you knows. Right, that was built different index, powered by midnight, built for now not like the old school bookies it's quick to use simple to navigate nor messing about such midnight built different index for more information remember you've got to be 18 or older and please gamble responsibly Newcastle Liverpool again firstly before we get into that side of it what a tribute to Kevin Keegan oh unbelievable wasn't it I was sat at all my head I was like goosebumps yeah I was like this is unbelievable both sets of fans amazing and deserved it of the man as well absolutely it was brilliant absolutely yeah it was it was the ideal fixture wasn't it I've never seen a stadium look like that it looked incredible forget the colours and who it was just everybody yeah was involved you know Alan Shearer's there holding his little square up as well you know it was just very moving yeah and yeah we're missing you know when all the old players come over we're missing what a man what a player absolutely we're missing it was seeing all those players who played for him as well making the journey Encino and all that that's right yeah Peter Berth yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah you know I mean you like going and everyone again me who loves the game uh over the years everyone who I've ever mentioned who's been in in and around Kevin Keegan have just spoke highly of him do you know what we talked before anything negative we talked before about managing you may be a little bit afraid of not do you know what I mean fear got you through to play for him I think Kevin Keane was a little bit like that yeah but you also loved him in equal measures because he was such a nice man I suppose if there was if there was a question out there who would you have liked to have played for he would have definitely been one of those tick boxers because he'd have gone go on go and play enjoy yourself show us what you've got that kind of thing cheers guys I remember Chere Given when he came on the pod and he told us a story about But the new shirt of the season he had on, he said it was horrific.

39:38You know, some of the designs. And he said, Kevin Keegan was there and he goes, oh, Gaffer, I'm not sure about these sorts. He went, no, I'm not either. He said, but I'm sure about the man who's got it on. Oh, is that what he said? I was like, poor man. That's very good. That's what you want, isn't it? You're like, out I go. Amazing. It might have been a bit different if you had it on. Fucking hell. Can I have nothing? can I have nothing have you seen your players I don't can I have Dion oh here we go here we go here we go so let's go forward oh fucking hell I'll move the conversation off do you want to try going in the nets against fucking Tevez he keeps saying this I'm like he's literally just retired when I went in the nets against him fucking hell I had that off Wazza as well oh what happened I'm like you go in you put a pair of he would though he would Yeah, he saved them either, let me tell you.

40:34Anyhow, I'm going back. I want to talk about Izak and Virts at Liverpool. Now, Gary Neville said, we need to start being more critical of players like Izak. Now, again, having no skin in the game, I thought, oh, he went to Liverpool, left him a bad taste in the mouth. It was wrong, it was wrong. But, to be fair to him, he got a bad injury, he got a break, didn't he? Now, you've been a player who's had a bad injury. How does that affect you? What are your thoughts when you go back to training and it's not quite working? Yeah, I had my... When I went to United in 92, I scored on my debut away at Southampton.

41:19I think it was the first Monday night game at Sky. And then two games later, I'm playing my Old Trafford debut. Very first time playing for Man United at Old Trafford. It was a dream. Absolute dream. first half got through it i'm thinking i'm doing all right yeah i'm holding on to the ball the bobbling into me again the lads thanks for that lads and you know and it was going all right the second half comes out about 10 15 minutes in second half i receive a ball um tackle from behind scissor tackle from behind i try to move off my light leg stays in left leg stays in the ground and it just snaps at the bottom so i do my i do my fib and my ankle stick my legs all over the place yeah and then you think right there's my chance gone at man united absolute nightmare Get into rehab, you start working in rehab and all that kind of stuff.

42:03And then you don't know how that's going to be. More often than not, you don't know how your head's going to be when the physical contact starts. And then there's a moment within your rehab that makes you go, oh, gosh, I'm okay. That came about seven months after breaking my leg. The tackle within. Yeah. In training. Yeah. The ball somehow. This is how Man United trained. Never trained like this at any other football club. Man United trained exactly the same as if they were playing against people they didn't know. Ball's in between me and Scolzi and we literally both went for it. We looked at each other and thought, okay, we're going to have to make the tackle.

42:40Gaffer's watching. He went off his feet. I went off my feet. Wholehearted challenge. Ball goes all over the place. We get up and I think, am I right? Am I right? I thought you were looking down at me. Scolzi, Scolzi. I actually remember that moment. I was thinking about it on the way because I was a young kid. I must have been 18, 19. And he's obviously on his way back. And I just broke his leg. But I don't think that at the time. No. But I think that's the best thing to happen. Yeah, I remember he just stared at me. Would you kind of think, oh, actually, I'm all right now? Paddy, he just stared at me.

43:15What have I done? I needed that challenge. I needed that. That was like me going, I'm all right. My leg can take that from skulls. He can take anything. And that's the moment when you go, right, I can kick on now. Yeah. And that's the moment where I think, well, might not be here, but I can go elsewhere, you know. Do we think Isak's reached that point yet? Because it looks like he hasn't reached that point to me. Is the players like Isak, when you go to a club, certain, I might be made to eat me words here by the end of the season, but Liverpool and Isak, from the moment it was mentioned, has been bad news.

43:54Everything's been bad. nothing's gone well for him in that move and the injury and everything else and he doesn't seem to be scoring the goals sometimes as a player you just go to a club and go it's just not going to work for me and I might have to leave and go somewhere else no I actually think he's too good a player for that to happen from what I show at Newcastle and I saw Gary's bit I watched a bit this morning and I agree with him I think they are both of them have really struggled for the money he's cost it's a struggle for them they've got to start getting something out of them I'm trying to think how could I get something out of them and they're probably both obsessed with being involved with goals especially Virts especially Isak thinking about scoring goals I'd forget that for the minute I'd strip it right back and say right the thing I've got to do now has to be aggressive I don't mean aggressive by smashing people and tackling people control the ball properly make sure you're ready pass the ball into people properly really aggressive everything you can do and they've got the quality that that will come Verts I think Isak can have a pass for now because of his injury yeah now look once you're getting four, five, six games this season then yeah now Verts have struggled he has struggled he's played a lot of football I'm just a little bit concerned whether he's suitable to the English game really it's different it's different it's different and he looks a little bit weak.

45:23Now, he's a brilliant footballer and I love some of the stuff he does. He almost looks like a Spanish footballer deal. Like one of the Iniesta's. The football players, yeah. He almost looks like one of them. I just wonder whether it's going to work for him. I think with Isak and with centre-forwards, you've got to give them games. Yeah. You've got to give them games to get back into the rhythm and the pace of the game. But then you have to serve them with chances all the time. Isak's not had any chances. He hasn't had a run of games. Yeah, but you know, what I'm trying to get at with you two are saying, he's too good a player.

45:55Sometimes a player goes to a club and it just doesn't work from... I think back to Torres, Liverpool to Chelsea. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You know, brilliant player. Gone there outstanding, yeah. But certain clubs just don't seem to... I think it's too early to say that though, Paddy, because he was out for a long time. I thought there was little bits yesterday he did, but I thought he's on his way back a little bit. now it's obviously going to be tough up there for him he got absolutely abused didn't he but there were like little turns there was one where he took it outside his pot and got away from someone I think there's little signs there of him getting something going but I think Liverpool as a team in general I still think they're struggling I think they've got things to do I quite like the centre half actually the centre half did okay was it Jackie oh yeah but did he not take him off after about 60 or 70 minutes yeah he did take him off but I thought it was promising him I think in the full-back areas I think they're struggling I think they need a right-back and the left-back the central midfield as well doesn't look right they looked too low from Bournemouth last season yeah, Kirk has yeah, it doesn't seem to work for him though does it?

47:02no look, it's not nice to say but I don't think he's good enough for Liverpool it is, again again, you are a good player at most other clubs yeah you know, you go to United you go to Liverpool it's a different level it's different expectation what's good at another club is not good enough if you go to Liverpool you can have two good tackles and cross a couple of balls and no I want five or six good tackles I want 18 crosses you know what I mean you can't give the ball away the thing is at Liverpool as well when you're left back or right you've got to be good at everything when you're at big clubs as left backs and right you've got to be good at defending you've got to be good at going forward it doesn't really give them a lot going forward and it was so clear yes that they were just targeting that side all the time.

47:49He's not the quick, now look, he's up against the Langer and a lot of people, a lot of people would struggle against the Langer but if you've got a little bit about you, you make sure you don't get yourself in them positions but it's a struggle for him. Is it like what you were saying like when you were at Bournemouth you're kind of like going outstanding. He's a player. Yeah. So he played, what got him in the move was that incredible ball which he played, I don't know who was to, Tavernier maybe, where he played from the left and he pinged it all the way across and his teammate calls it on the volley oh brilliant great sign him sign him and then you think well that's great at Bournemouth and you do that at Liverpool it's great but then do it again and then do it against Tottenham then do it against Arsenal it's just the standards that the big clubs set themselves and once you see a weakness in a team you go for the vote you've got to he's going to get targeted every single week

48:45Football teaches us anything. It's about levels. What team last season hit a level you didn't expect? Sunderland. Sunderland. Sunderland, absolutely. Yeah, that's a great shot, Sunderland, yeah. Bournemouth. Bournemouth, yeah. I always feel Bournemouth always do well. Yeah. Brentford, you put in that bowl as well, don't you? Brentford, yeah, they did well. They managed it out. But I'd go Sunderland. They just think what they did. And they didn't get that many goals, really, for a team that just came up. Yeah, I'd go Sunderland. Who's going to be a level above this season? We're going to do a feature now called Have I Got Views for You? As the new season has kicked off, our viewers. Hi. They've got plenty of questions and outrageous opinions for us.

50:09So let's get through a few of them. I'll tell you interestingly no one ever puts a surname on these yes safety safety have I got views for you have I got views for you who's with that mods Jack Jack hand up Jack pat yourself on the back alright not too much I think he's patting himself on the back he's really happy this is from Mark Lads Eddie Ho will be the next Manchester United manager or by the end of the season? England manager. Good question. I think England for Man United. So, no, his answer to the question, I think they've earmarked him for England. He seems like that England set-up, looking back to the Gareth Southgate, I'm not saying a yes man, but that kind of ticks the boxes for everything they want.

51:08he seems ideal for that doesn't he Eddie O I don't think you say look at yeah I don't think if it's a complete disaster for Michael then it wouldn't be the biggest shock in the world would it because it was Tuchel was the name for United for United yeah apparently he'd all agreed hadn't he a couple of years ago really yeah apparently so if you like the Mourinho one he'd agreed at the beginning when Sir Alex first left before David Moyes he said he sort of more or less got the deal done Do you know what? Interestational managers are becoming younger and younger as well now, aren't they? It used to be like a get to 60 when your football career is going.

51:45Exactly, that'll do you. I can have a nice little 10 days each month. I think Frank will be in that mould as well. He's had two or three years in the Premier League. Frank Lampard will be in that sort of bracket if he can keep his stock high. Well, there you go, Mark. The lads don't think he'll be the next United manager, but they think he could possibly be the next England manager. Next one's from Jeremy. me. Arsenal will win the treble this season. You know what? I can't. I'm not going to back that up, but I'm not going to say no, they won't. Because they've got the best squad, settled, harmony at the football club.

52:26The football they're playing is great. He looks over his shoulder, his bench is ridiculously strong. Treble, difficult, but I wouldn't put it past them. Double could be doable. Premier League's going to be hard enough to win. Let's get it right. But I wouldn't put it past them. I would not put it past them at all. Right, okay. I agree with you. I think it's very possible. The way they're looking, I'm still thinking the last week of the win, I think they're still looking for people to bring in, which is scary. You just brought Konza in as well. He was like a top-class defender. Top-class defender.

52:59Although, Jeremy, I'm not sure if you're a gooner or not, but the lads are agreeing with that. They said it's a possibility that they'll I think there's every chance there's a goon isn't there? Yeah there is every chance You never know you never know you never know Weird times in football This is from John spelt J-O-N I like that It's cool Putting the H is too much in it sometimes It's cool Yeah J-O-N that's just what you want yeah And if you get sick of it you replace the N with an E and you can be a jaw It's all out there isn't it? It depends how much you get sick of it do you know John's saying Carlos Tevez is the most underrated player in the Premier League history oh I don't think well he wasn't underrated to us yeah he wasn't underrated to us he was brilliant yeah oh I know oh no you know wow he was he was brilliant yeah he um I used to sit next to him in training actually at the training ground so what was he like to be around?

54:01We didn't speak a lot of English, did we? No, but you can sort of get a vibe. You know what? Hated training. Is that a South American thing? It could be, not so much either. Did he? I think a lot of, they never, when I say hated it, that might be a little bit strong, but if he had a choice, I think he'd rather stay inside than go out and train. Yeah. Because of the cold. I remember, I remember that. He came in one day, you know, like he had that long head and it was fucking all over. What the fuck's wrong with him? He come in and I think Rod was on the massage. He just lay on the massage and said, I'm not training today.

54:36Why? He said, my kid didn't sleep last night. I'm just going to stay here. And didn't go out training. But when he went on the pitch. Oh, yeah. Match day. Yeah. Do you know what he couldn't handle? Do you know why he probably left, Carlos? He couldn't handle being left out for Berbatov. Yeah. Oh, really? Oh, my gosh. They are chalk and cheese, aren't they? That's what I mean, yeah. Berbatov was so languid and relaxed and looked like he never tried. But you'd probably look at his stats and they were probably all right. He's running stats. And then Carlos was fucking here then. Yeah. I can't believe they'll leave me out for him.

55:09He doesn't work hard. Yeah. He was that type. Yeah. I mean, the amount of work you've got through and you've seen these goals. Yeah. Ridiculous. And yeah, Berber was just... Yeah. But Tevez was saying, but just before we signed Tevez, not before, I think the season before, we played in a friendly against his Argentinian team, Old Trafford. I did quite a bad tackle on him. And in the paper the day after, he'd come out and slagged me off. He'd say he's like a butcher or something, an awful footballer, a terrible tackle. So he signs for it. He comes and sits next to me. Morning, Carlos. Brilliant.

55:46Who's a butcher? Dion, he was brilliant. He was great. When you have a player like that as well who works his bollocks off in front, oh, he's brilliant. I loved him, man. Well, John, I don't know if you're a United fan, a City fan, or even a West Elm fan. but he went to City so well this is it yeah I reckon John might be a West Ham fan I actually saw Carlos last year playing golf I never thought he'd be a golfer fucking good golfer was he good was he yeah I never seen putting do you know where he could play in golf my club Presbury did he Presbury yeah do you own that club or no you said my club well it is I'm a member there aren't I fucking hell I'm not saying I thought you owned it to Dion right what can we do with this gaff, Dion.

56:30I've got I've got 120 quid budget and a freezer full of choc-ices. You need more than that to be a member on there, don't you? I got in on skill. I went, oh, that's a fucking laugh. That's true. Right, Chris is saying the only foods you should be able to buy at a football ground are burgers and Bovril. Nah, he's got that on Chris. He's had an apple. I always had a pie on the cherry end all them pies are everything maybe take a pie and a bovril in fact I've got as far to say burgers shouldn't be allowed in a football ground it's a fucking American thing outside outside yeah that's a great point outside so you used to have a pie at half time at bovril and on the way out five minutes left burger outside the cherry end burger store yeah spill it all down the top of the cage on the way out the onions the ketchup brilliant in fact I'm trying to think what clubs do burgers in the ground you have your dinner and the tea at the football on a Saturday afternoon Brilliant I loved it when you used to play football you two lads because that was in the era where you had all our fucking fish and chips and lasagnas and all sorts but still work and do 90 minutes Steak and beans were pre-match all the time chunky steak like that Do you know it's funny how the game evolves obviously with sports science and everything else but even before you two were playing I remember Big Sam telling me a story of I think he was at I don't know if it was Bolton or West Brom.

58:00But he said one of the things came in when they were playing, so it'd be water's bad for you when you're training. So they were told not to drink water and just eat steak all the time and only have a sip of water after training. So many things that changed. No, but that was the thing. He said, genuinely, they went, don't drink water when you're training. It's like fucking... It's all fashionable, isn't it? Yeah. Yeah, when I, towards the end when I stopped playing, it was ice baths. Yeah, yeah. But you had to go in for seven minutes. Yeah, yeah. It was a refill. Yeah. And then by the time it finished, you should only do that for one minute.

58:38Yeah. Things change all the time. It's fucking madness. The thing about it is what didn't affect the players that we played with is I would play with David Ginola, Steven Grisevic, Incy, and, you know, after the game like that. Yeah. Yeah. That was a fag. Crazy. And then they put Incy in the middle of the pitch. He's best player on the pitch. Oggy's diving about, David Ginola, he was bad, wasn't he? You know, honestly, just, whatever works. Yeah, exactly. Whatever works. We're all different now. Whatever works. When you two were playing, were there anything of those things, them fads that came in were that, no, like you just said, seven minutes in the arse bath, where no, you go, oh, did that ever become a thing?

59:23No, not really. I always remember though, playing from week to week and if one week I felt great, I'd always think, right, go prepare for the next game. Right, what did he eat last week? And try to do exactly the same and then feel like shit. Yeah. So if just, I don't think there's any rhyme or reason to anything. You just probably did stuff off more superstition more than anything. See, I would always, I can say it now, I'm retired, I'd always have a beer on a Friday night indoors always nice always have a beer on a Friday night just the one no two beers two beers a settler here we go away trips I'd be in my hotel room away trips at home I'd have a couple of beers away trips two pints only Boddington's Bitter if you're listening do you know what I was just going to say I remember after games you were always bringing like four kinds of bodies on you were a bodies man yeah don't know what yellow cans remember yeah They had a little bee on them.

1:00:17Melanie Sykes' fault, that is. Melanie Sykes' fault. With the ice cream van. Oh, yeah, I think we all had a bodies. And you know what? As well, Scolzi, Scolzi's heard me use the word scoops for years, and it's because of Melanie Sykes scooping the ice cream out. So I used to say... Is that where that come from? No, that must have been before that. In 92, because of Barrington's, I've seen the advert, I'd say, fancy a scoop, because of the ice cream. Couple of scoops. He says it all the time. I said it for years. are you saying you invented scoops because I've heard that with beers never put it down to that but that could be a thing I've used it since that advert in 92 so I think he's so I could the out Dublin has invented scoops scoops yeah so I'd have the two pints of bodies I'd have a litre of fizzy water and I would have a tuna and mayonnaise sandwich on white every away trip was that like a superstitious thing if you didn't have it.

1:01:15Room service, you're talking about. That's room service. Right, so you'd have your dinner like, oh, you'd take it at seven o 'clock and then nine, ten o 'clock. So nine, ten o 'clock, I have something to eat and that'll be it. Imagine that now, that wouldn't happen now. You got joking. It happened at Leicester. Mickey Adams is my manager. I said to Mickey, I was like, I was 36, 37 when I got to Leicester. I said, Mickey, I do like a pint on a Friday night. I said, as long as you're in your room, it's fine. Yeah. so the very first away trip for me Mickey's now I'd say go to a manager I'd like a pie on a Friday night is that alright?

1:01:44he said okay no problem so Mickey's now with Aaron Cork was with him at the time and all the staff much about eight staff nine staff they stayed up we've gone to bed and this guy's walking through with a tray like that he said hey where you going with that? it's for Dion Dublin alright then he just let it go and that was it came to me room you used to do that for coming home though from away trips didn't you yeah all the time so did you sneak them in then because the gaffer wouldn't have had that would they no I never used to have like a cup of tea cup looking full of bodies I'd have a beer at the ground yeah which everyone did then didn't they in the players lounge everyone did yeah then you get on the coach just imagine getting caught as long as you're not doing it to excess and you're still scoring the goals and doing what you should be doing on the pitch then that's a different point and you played really late into your careers you can't really argue that it had an effect on your sort of playing and getting older as well yeah 39 are retired does he still go in bodies uh i think it is going i think it had a bit of a i think he died off but i think he's having a bit of a revival it was a manchester thing bodies wasn't it definitely manchester yeah it was definitely the b the b told you that yeah and i've got to say me and you sat here on the podcast folks for all you lot watching wherever you may be this is like being on dragon's den with dion because before the podcast started He's got his own rum And by the way I'm looking forward to that You've got a chocolate one Yeah And a lime one Yuzu And a spiced Oh Yes Then he gets the Oh I've got to say maracas What the Shakers What's the name of the brand?

1:03:21Because you give us a couple of odds And you have a chance to look at them Yeah My rum brand is called 52 North Go on why is that? Because it's where Where East Meets West And we've used the spices from East And West I don't get it I like it I don't I like it it's the circumference geography it's all about geography oh you fuck now with it he's screwed outside of Middleton 52 North 52 North that's what it's called thank you yeah I like that and then these shakers percussion shakers jube percussion shakers tube as in D-U-B-E like Cuban Dublin dube now when it comes to players leaving the game and they go I'm going to come up with the next Predators or whatever.

1:04:08Dion goes, I know, percussion instruments. I thought it was a box of Domino's, that. Do you know when he come in like that, I thought, oh, it's his tablets. I thought you were going to flip up the letters. That's like Monday, I've got to have a... It's all them fucking bodies I've drank over. I'm absolutely screwed. So what made you come up? Was it like a love of music? Big music, man. I was going to do big music. So in my house, three brothers, sister, mum and dad, everybody played a musical instrument. Oh, right. Everybody played a musical instrument. And I didn't really have a musical instrument.

1:04:43When I break my leg at United... Wait a minute. Does that count as playing a musical instrument? I'll explain. There's a lot of music. Exactly. Furious with you. Four skulls, lives in Manchester. So I never had anything to play. So I break my leg at United. And I'm in my cast from my groin to my toes. And I self-taught myself. to play the sax when i was as you do so i was out for eight months i thought i could only do so many gigs so i'll play the sax and then when i'm at home i always tap in things and yeah so i i i'm a percussionist myself but then i was sick of maracas and all that kind of stuff and i thought i'm gonna create a i firstly created a drum and now so are they actually for sale then yeah yeah i'm doing all right doing all right because a lot of a lot of the big because like robbie's Robbie Williams drummer uses them even Stevie Wonder's percussionists use them he's in our dream team Rob's drummer Stevie Wonder no Rob's drummer Rob's drummer's in the dream team I told him I said everyone's in our dream team well give me the proper link and I'll be in it I did I've sent it about four fucking times is that user error is that user error user error is that right yeah I'm not great at technology I picked a good team so give us any I'll show you so these are I made these as individual shake Oh, I didn't know they came up.

1:06:01Oh, no. Oh. Now I see it. So you get different sounds. Do you know what? I think my son would like that. I think Aidan would like that. Yeah, absolutely. They come apart. Yeah, so they all come about. So you can pass them round. Here, Paddy, on its way. Yep, one pole. Scores you on its way. See how I caught mine. I chested that. Chested that down. You chested it. I caught it. So you can have it as an individual shaker, or you can give it to the lead singer, and the lead singer. That's rhythm, isn't it? Me and you. That's proper, isn't it? I love that. There you go. I tell you what, I think you're right though with Aidan.

1:06:40I think he'd love that. Grab them. Give them. He'd grab them once. He'd wreck it. He'd smash it to bits, but he'd love that. A lot of sensory stuff. He'd love that. Tactile to his grave. Yeah, he'd love that. They're skulls. He'd give them to skulls. Thank you. What's going to do, pal? Thank you. They're yours. How much did it cost, that Dion? About 25 quid, 26 quid. I'm going to order a set. Order a set. the kids because I like how they come apart and I like how they all have a slightly different tone nice to hold on to tactile how do you don't have to pay for anything sir they're coming to you for free there you go I like supporting local businesses Dion I'm going to buy them not like him you heard it first that's not like you that's not like you yeah I know I've realised that as soon as this camera comes I'll go come on Dion you knew that was just for sure here's my address get them take that out I'm in the floor you know what though I love it and I think you're an inspiration to people in the game as well because a lot of footballers you know the heights you two played at doesn't always work out like that sometimes you can be involved in football and come out of the game as a young man and that's all you've ever known so to turn your hand to other things you know what I mean thank you fair play cheers Dion hey Dion what an absolute treat thank you Dion Brilliant.
