In short

England’s World Cup group-stage tactics under Thomas Tuchel (low-block, squad choices, midfield balance), plus debate on Ronaldo’s “I’m back” moment, Messi/penalties, punditry, and a World Cup-themed food showdown (South Korea custard buns vs Scotland deep-fried battered Mars bars).

Guests

Chris McCausland, London-based comedian (studied software engineering at Kingston Uni; eyesight deteriorated; started stand-up as a dare ~23 years ago; Liverpool fan; travels for gigs and recently saw Foo Fighters at Reading Festival 1995; discusses North West football rivalry).

Key claims

Tuchel’s approach is emotionless and pragmatic—built to overpower teams and manage qualification/weather/altitude—though England may be using the wrong starting XI and midfield pairing (Rice and Anderson) and Bellingham isn’t a true number 10. Ghana’s Carlos Kieros-style low block is hard to break. Ronaldo’s “back” is persona/arrogance; he’s great vs weaker teams but can look silly when games don’t open up. Penalties should count for goal tallies, but penalty-heavy scoring can distort “best striker” comparisons.

Notable examples

England’s 0-0 vs Ghana; Scotland fans in Boston; Portugal vs Uzbekistan (Ronaldo scoring); Messi penalty miss/stutter discussion; VAR/penalty controversy; food: custard buns vs fishy-tasting battered Mars bar.

0:00Welcome to the good, the bad and the football sponsored by Midnight, the betting app that's built differently. And speaking of built differently, as you might notice, we're in a completely different set for today's show. I use the word show very loosely. We're in that London. They've got it all down here. Coaches, fans over there and we've got top turn with us as well. Chris McCausland. Welcome to the show, pal. Cheers, mate. Do you know what? I don't know what's gone on with the booking this week, but the World Cup started. The last two weeks, you've had John Barnes. And then I don't know how it happens, but something's gone wrong.

0:37You've got me on this week. How long have you been in London? 30 years, mate. Wow. Yeah, I went to Kingston Uni in the mid-90s and just stayed around, really. So, not lost your accent, have you, Chris? Yeah, yeah, to be honest, yeah. You know, it used to be a lot stronger and it kind of, you know, I'm trying to find a flag at the minute, aren't I? So it's going to get stronger and stronger. Does it get stronger when you're around Scouse, lads, as well? Oh, yeah, on the phones, I mean, it goes strong as well, yeah. 30 years, though, back then, I mean, you're a student. I mean, how did you go on actually affording anywhere around here?

1:15It's absolutely horrific, the prices in London, aren't they? Bananas, isn't it? That's the one thing I wish I'd looked at. I never really considered just looking at average house prices in an area when picking a university to go to. Never considered the future to that extent, but it's bananas, mate. How often are you back up in Liverpool? You know, not as much as I used to be, because when I used to do the clubs, I'd be up there a lot doing clubs in the North West every month, and touring a lot now, it's a lot less. but whenever I can, I'm going to go and take my daughter up and my wife to watch the Foo Fighters at Anfield this weekend.

1:57Oh, nice. Very nice. What's your name before? Yeah, I saw their very first concert over here back in 1995. They were at the Reading Festival and they got put in the tent, which was, I think, massively underestimated the amount of people that would want to watch them because of the Nirvana connection. Yeah. So overcrowded, people hanging from the things at the top of the tent. you know it was mental yeah one of the best live bands

2:20Nicky:I've seen Foo Fighters really one of the best live bands yeah he talks a lot though doesn't he he talks a lot on stage he's a good talker isn't he but he does and he goes oh we're going to play so many songs he's going to be you go well you shut up you could do an extra two sorry I was just going to ask how did you go from studying London then to becoming a comedian is that something you always wanted to do no no so like I just literally my education I just followed the path of least resistance i was good at maths and computers did that in a level did software engineering um and um basically just uh yeah my eyesight deteriorated so i kind of went lost lost the end of it just as i finished uni and i was unemployed for a little while figuring out what i wanted to do got a job in a call center to pass the time and i did comedy as just as a dare to do it once like i just loved stand-up and um so i just did it once to just to have a go uh then that was 23 years ago Had your eyesight Completely deteriorated When you first Decided to do stand-up Yeah Yeah yeah yeah So it had gone Gone by then Yeah so it literally From birth Right the way over 20 odd years And you know I mean really Kind of I did alright Until maybe You know as I got To like the age Of 14, 15 It was It was more of a struggle But you know When it comes to Liverpool I didn't exactly Miss much in the 90s In terms of watching watching the Reds on the telly so obviously you're a Liverpool fan Chris you're sat with two ex-United lads what's your feelings?

3:57I recall something else before I know yeah he dropped it in there didn't he? you're allowed to say it Chris do you know what I mean these two are partly responsible for a lot of misery in my youth and it's fair to say growing up united in the 90s Jesus Christ but God did we fucking hate you lot

4:24Nicky:although we are quickly becoming a Liverpool podcast because we've had so many scousers on over the last God knows how many weeks it has gone very Merseyside skewed hasn't it yeah but that's that's just your egos you can't control your own egos you're like get another one on get another one on so we can hear them talking about how good we were yeah yeah was it like no it's interesting isn't it because that rivalry is still there but back in the 90s it was palpable yeah but people forget we had it when we was growing up in the 80s at school Liverpool were dominant John Barnes we were talking about John Barnes last week I used to hate Liverpool they'd win everything it was so good it's all we wanted to do growing up was if ever we got there which was the if at that time was be like Liverpool and they'll be dominant have everyone hate you because when everyone hates you it's a sign of respect it completely is in football and I think the two cities are so similar when you look at how we're talking about being brought up and playing out on the streets love the music they're passionate about the football team they're very similar they're not even a 35 minute drive away from each other so they're very similar cities I mean that's why the rivalry is so big as well I mean doing comedy when you're travelling round you know you have that rivalry in football between the two cities but when you're a North West comedian, both of them are home gigs, if you know what I mean.

5:45Because the cities are so similar. If I play Manchester, it's almost like playing Liverpool. They just love a North West comedian. Yeah, it is true. So it is very similar. More than we'd like to admit. Yeah, it's true. In the north of England, like you said, them football rivalries like United, Liverpool, Blackburn, Bolton, Wigan, all them places where you have that real rivalry but funnily enough what Chris is saying when you're doing stage shows in them places everyone's all on the same page

6:17Nicky:it's the same with football and when you go on holiday as teenagers you always gravitate you always end up having Scouse mates you always pick the people at the bar or you go away with England you always gravitate to the Scouse lads or the Mank lads it becomes very much a north south divide it does yeah get them over there before we talk about the 0-0 draw against Ghana we were saying before we started you know Tuchel could be on to something we're through we're not going to play Mexico so there might be a little bit of it's not that difficult to get through to be fair is it? no no but if we'd have gone through top of the group we could have we still might go top of the group yeah yeah still will does it not feel like the most pointless 72 games because like 12 of the team how many teams are going down 16?

7:0412 of them you could write down before it started you know and then it feels like we're playing 72 games to choose four teams to not go through. You can lose two games in the group stage and you still go through. Scotland, so they beat Aita, they play Brazil tonight and I heard this morning, even if they get beat 3-0 tonight, they can still go through. I can't get my head wrong, though. I love the way that, I mean, I love Andy Robbo, but on this interview, I love the way he's talking about beating Brazil. There's more chance of me driving myself home. although there's another one sorry Cape Verde as well they've drawn two games they only need a draw to go through

7:43Nicky:that's the flip side of it the argument is that it is pointless games it's pointless teams maybe not got a chance of even going through but when you look at the games like Cape Verde and stuff it's the world sport everyone says and to go and represent your country for the World Cup is massive when you see the fans of that Cape Verde game it's phenomenal it's great for all them it's good they're on at 2 and 5 in the morning, so you'd have to watch them. But double it, double it. Don't go for 48 teams. Double it to 64. Because what you've done as well is that because only four of the third places are going out and eight are staying in, that whole thing of playing the two group games at the same time is kind of a bit null and void because it depends on how other groups have gone now, doesn't it?

8:28Yeah, yeah, yeah. So if you're playing your last two games in the later groups, you kind of know what you've got to beat to qualify now, which makes it unfair, really, doesn't it? Yeah, definitely. What I would say in all, I know you're saying about Brazil there, but if you're going to play Brazil, now's the time, really, because it's not Brazil-Brazil, is it? No, this isn't Brazil we've seen for years. Yeah, yeah. And also, Chris, producer of this pod, who's a massive Scotland fan, has put you right in front of the Scotland shirt there, Scolzi. Look at that. do you know what I want our our home nations to do well Paddy I know a lot of people don't a lot of people don't want England to do well but have you seen the Scotland fans over there they're unbelievable yeah amazing see them on the boat see them on the boat in Boston Boston yeah with the bagpipes playing out brilliant you don't see the one like the Braveheart fellas yeah see the video oh it's unbelievable when they played the other week what time was the kick off it was in the evening wasn't it they nearly sank a boat

9:30Nicky:they nearly sank a boat in Boston jumping on the boat bouncing on the boat well so I mean the day of that game I was driving out of a village and a geezer come walking he had Scotland shit on he had the little hat on the jointy angle and it were about 11 o 'clock in the morning and he was going straight in the pub and I thought my god that's commitment Norwegians have you seen the Norwegians in the rowings one have you seen it no they're unbelievable really good you know I love that obviously we love the football but the World Cup just seeing those nations' fans, it's just... But football-wise, it doesn't get going until the last 16, does it?

10:12Nicky:It doesn't really get going. Well, let's talk about the England-Kharnock game. Now, a lot of people online are saying this is where we're missing the creative players like Fordham and Palmer and Trent. Would you agree with that? We said that last week, though. We said he's built a squad to overpower other teams. now at some point you are going to need a clever player we said that last week with John Barnes didn't we and I think last night was a prime example now don't get me wrong because it's low block defending deep it's hard to beat and we had Carlos Kieros who was manager of Ghana last night we had him in the new camp when we drew a Barcelona 0-0 last night it was like a carbon copy low block fucking low block I know I know team defending deep no gaps anywhere you don't try and score or a goal really, you might get the odd chance like they did last night and it's horrible to play against but he is going to miss at some point, even when you play the best teams, you are going to miss them players which can just create a bit of magic.

11:15Well, this is a surprise, like Tuchel seemed to have this thing and he said it when he announced the squad, like it's a team and they're all believing in the same thing and he's got these players who are going to run legs off teams and, you know, he started Gordon last night and everyone was surprised, thought he was going to start Rashford after Rashford came on the last game and looked good. But again, you can see he's just, with the players he had on, they're just trying to run Garner into the ground. Well, that's a squad he's picked. He's picked a team, a squad of players, to just hold over power teams.

11:47Now, you can do that against some teams. And do you know what? They're very good at it. Don't get me wrong. But at some point, with this weather as well, they could be playing in 80, 90 degrees. I think they've got away with the first two games weather-wise. Once they're playing at 80, 90 degrees and they've got to try and do that, it'll be so difficult for them.

12:07Nicky:There's two things with Tuchel that's jumping out to me and one of them is a good thing and one of them is not so good for me from watching him. I think the good thing with Tuchel is he's not going to get emotionally involved with all the chaos that goes around England fans. Always what I'm going to win every game. Always what I'm going to be brilliant. Always what I'm going to score two and three goals. Always what I'm going to be singing and going straight after it. He will take his emotions away from that and think, I've got a job as an England manager to go and get that national team to win the World Cup.

12:34Nicky:Now, it doesn't matter how he does it. If he qualifies the way he do now, we could say, well, we should be beating Garner, we should have folding on to create one or two chances. He won't have that mindset. He'll be thinking, where's our next game coming at? If we finish in the second in this group, he won't think that's a bad thing because he won't be going to Mexico to play at 7 ,000 feet above sea level. The altitude is going to be like 88 degrees, it's 34 degrees. he might be that clever that he's taken his emotions away from that and trying to plan his route that's the good thing for him whatever happens they're going to win the group do you know what I mean it was a small blip that could be eight games I do think he'll be waking up this morning thinking I picked the wrong team I don't think that's what I was going to say the bad thing about him for me is that I don't think if he was in the final tomorrow I don't know he knows his best team wrong team and also as well and of course we all want England to win the World Cup but that was a penalty.

13:29Nicky:Yeah, they're very lucky. That was a penalty. Last goal is saying, the weather we got away with, it was raining, we got away with it. It was perfect temperature, go and play football, we've got the ball on the grass and they got away with the penalty. Now, that might just be a little bit of the summit in the stars here. And to midfield players here, the midfield just isn't right. I think in a game like that, especially when you're going to have all the ball, you do not need Rice and Anderson together. He's not going to change that though, is he? I think, I wouldn't be surprised if he did. Really?

14:01Yeah. Bellingham is not a number 10. He is not a number 10. He's a number 8 who can run. A number 10 gets your team playing really good football. That's not Bellingham. They do little bits of magic in and around. It's not Bellingham. Bellingham's a number 8. He's got to be arriving in the box late and he's good enough on the ball as well to be able to do that. Do you think that's why some of the stuff in the past where you've heard about Tuchel and Bellingham, and we've got to take everything with a pinch of salt, where they've been at log raise? Do you think that's because Bellingham's saying to him, I don't play in that role you want me to play?

14:32No, I don't think so because, no. I think that was more because he chose, did he choose Morgan Rodgers instead of him in a game? By the way, I think he did well when he came on, Morgan Rodgers. Yeah, really good player. I think them two are quite similar in a way. Again, that number 10 role, it's like becoming a running role. It's not a David Silva role. When we were playing number 10, if we were at number 10s, they make your team play proper football David Silva as Nicky said Manchester City Dennis Burkham Hart have gone back a long time Cantona Cantona Teddy Shering Dwight York there's loads of them they make your team play that kind of attractive they link everything together they haven't really got that and the other ones Mark they aren't playing the best two wide players Rashford and Saka are the best two wide players I mean it seems obvious but do you think you'll start Rashford next game I think there'll be a few change next game.

15:26Nicky:Yeah. There'll be a few people minutes next game. You know what, Paddy, sorry, just go on what you're saying on wide players and substitute. It's a lot easier to come on to a game as a sub and affect a game. Yeah. But when that lad's been, when Anthony Gardner's been going up and there for 70 minutes, it's not easy there. He's loosened the jar, hasn't he? Of course he has. And all of a sudden, when it's nil-nil as a sub, you feel great. He said, I can't do any worse than these fuckers that have just come on. You know what I mean? So it gives you that bit of confidence. And Marcus came on and was brilliant.

15:57Now look, starting, it might be a different story on Saturday night. Yeah, good show. And you've got to give Garner's right. I thought Garner's right back was unbelievable.

16:05Nicky:I thought they played an unbelievable game. I thought it was brilliant. They were aggressive, they were compact, they were disciplined. Everything's got about what Carlos Kieros does. He did it to the point. You were saying before what Carlos Kieros said about the VAR when the penalty, they went for a coffee VAR, I think. But he's right. When that penalty went in, I've gone, if you go to VAR it's a penalty they can't not give it they didn't even go to VAR what was the thing what was has the refs have we heard the refs report why he said he didn't even send because has the ref got to send it to VAR I've still not got a clue about VAR they come to him I think VAR should just step in and go stop the game they do that's what they do they come to him so they've obviously seen it VAR have watched it on a TV somewhere don't know where it is but somewhere they've watched it and to not even go oh maybe let's have a little look at that just let it go yeah I mean it's you can understand why they're so thank God they did oh unbelievably thank God they did it'll be exciting to see what the team is then on the next one see what Tuchel does Rashford, Saka I'll tell you we'll play together John Stones and Gay will play together 100 % because Gay was brilliant last night the thing is it might be a chance just to play a few players he needs to get minutes absolutely gutted we didn't get him Gay yeah what a sign and he'd have been for you, wasn't he?

17:24Was it 20 million as well or something? It was close to getting done, wasn't it? He didn't go there for a medical or something. Yeah, and I think they decided to not sell him right at the last, you know. This episode is brought to you by Google Chrome. You think you know a browser, but Gemini and Chrome, that's new. 17:56Check responses set up required, compatibility and availability varies 18+. Now it's time for another installment of a game inspired by the World Cup. Paul and Nicky are going to try two foods from different World Cup countries and they have to pick the winner. This is Midnight Snack, powered by our friends at midnight, the betting app that's built different. And I've got to say, I might join in on this one. Look nice. We're going South Korea versus Scotland.

18:27Nicky:Shall I show you the stuff, Paddy? Yeah. So these are South Korean custard buns. They look quite nice, actually. Very good. I'm going to take one and pass them on. Hold on a minute. Hold on a minute. And then lift the Scotland. We've got the deep fried Mars bar. Got to say, at the moment, the custard buns are winning on the statics. Got to say, though. I could have had a scotch pie. I love a scotch pie. I love a scotch pie Greg's do that with beans on top yeah fantastic just speaking about custard is there anything nicer than getting a tin of ambrosia Devon custard out the fridge cold and just eating it straight out the tin there's a lot of things nicer yeah yeah a lot you could put like a jam roll with it or an apple crumble and actually I wouldn't even get the ambrosia one I'd go more along the Marks and Spencers wouldn't me come on Nicky I'd make it Marks and Spencers listen Marks and Spencers is fantastic well, hang on, that's fucking powder.

19:23No, you get it in cartons now.

19:26Nicky:What? Bird's custard? It's powdered bird's custard. You're a war food. Tinned ambrosia, war food. You get it on the rations. Fucking rations. You big digs down the garden. Come on, kids, let's get some ambrosia out in the fucking cave down there. You've gone... Honestly, sometimes custard could be too posh. When it's all that, oh, look at the vanilla pudding. No, not the vanilla pudding. No, not the vanilla stuff. Soft and natural, normal custard. I'm going to try it. You want bright yellow, ambrosia, Devon custard, cold, and I'm with you, a Swiss roll. Don't you like it? If you've ever made it in a pan when you was a kid and it goes nice and thick, big skin on top.

20:04Oh, I hate the skin. I don't like the skin.

20:07Nicky:I don't like the skin on the rice pudding either. No, I don't. I don't. It knocks me sick. Also, as well, I think custard's best cold, but you sponge warm. No. Anyhow, go on then lads, dip into your custard buns Pass them over Paddy please Thank you

20:26Thank you There's actually a taste of custard Well we're going to find out Nicky's going to trade in

20:34Nicky:By the way I'm also aware the comments we had last time about us slapping our chops on the These have done AI with our thing You start being a bit more Stop being so uncouth Paddy I've got to say these are a let down I've seen these online viral and they don't look like they're loads of custard when you get them from the shop these are these are out the supermarket I think they're unbelievable no they're not they're from a really good shop these I know the shop so they're not from a supermarket yeah but they're not like frozen like your ambrosia custard quite nice not everything in the supermarket is fucking frozen what's your problem with saying they're from a supermarket how can he possibly have a problem with that nice nice them exactly bakers that's where else smart ass bakers yeah they've just got them out of a packet they're what they could get from the bakers they'd be nice with a cup of tea i think they're very good no they're very light very light yeah boring you two gonna like these mars you're gonna like these mars bars you aren't you battered mars bar not for me at all right well i've seen these deep fried mars bars I would say it's never been top of the list, but here we go.

21:48I've never fancied one. Here we go. Have we got one each or just breaking a bit off? One each. Here we go. They've gone a bit cold.

21:56Nicky:Again, respectful of the audience. Don't want you slapping your chops again. Have you heard you? Is that really a Mars buy? It looks like... The batter tastes like fish. Where the fuck have you got these from? It looks like meat. They've just... That's possibly the worst thing I've ever had. That's worse than anything else you eat. I don't mind it. It tastes like a salmon battered Mars bar. I've had like pineapple fritters and banana fritters. You're right though, that's been in the fish batter, hasn't it? Fish oil. No, I don't mind that. That would be nice if they'd done it in the fucking nice batter.

22:35If you have a banana fritter, lovely. You'd better give scores of yours. But that tastes of fish. that's been out of a chippy thingy hasn't it

22:43Nicky:same oil as a fish I don't know I mean that's alright oh look at that shiny fingers the crickets are nicer than that that's a bold statement a ball of insects is nicer than a batter that taste of chocolate fish yeah but hear me out on this hear me out I'm agreeing with you they were horrific these ones but you think if that batter wasn't a fish batter it was a nice batter like you get a banana fritter I think they'd be nice I can only tell you what I'm tasting. That's like saying, look at that woman over there. She's 92. I think you've both been very positive. 92, but when she was 25, she was unbelievable.

23:17Nicky:I'm looking at what I'm looking at. I'm tasting what I'm tasting. What the fuck's he going to say? When she was 25, she was... What, you can't say... The fucking way his brain works. I'm tasting what I'm tasting. It tastes fishy. He's lapped them up. He's a dirty bastard, honestly. I mean, honestly, he's got the worst tasting food. You give him a nice, like, Michelin-star dinner there and that got rubbish, but he'll eat a salmon, Mars bar. You know what? He'll be back home in fucking Oldham, up on Saddleworth Moor. Overmill. Dropping a couple of cod liver oil tablets and eating a Mars bar. That's his thing.

23:58You'll absolutely love them. I'm taking them home. I thought they were good. Thrown a lot of interesting comments out there, lads, but we've got to pick a winner. South Korea or Scotland? The custard buns or the battered Mars bar?

24:10Nicky:Scotland for me. It's custard buns, South Korea. I mean, that chocolate, I'd rather pick dog shit up and clap it in my hands and lick it off than eat that Mars bar again. That's a very strong statement. You've got a bit of Scotland inside you. Yeah, my family's Scottish, but that was... And I'll tell you now, none of my family eat that. I must have had a different one to you. You've got a scotch pie on here. I've got the deciding vote here, and let me tell you, if they... Oh, we can't say that, Paddy. You can't say that. You can't say it. Shoulda, woulda, coulda. I'm saying, I couldn't see how they'd be nice if they were warm and a nice batter, but I've got to go with Nicky because they did taste like fish.

24:47They are warm. They are warm. Well, no, we're warm in here. Fucking, we're red hot. They're not warm. They're not warm. The cakes were boring. They were boring. They were boring. I've seen them. I was so lucky. I thought they were really nice.

25:00Nicky:Light, light. No, but I think when you see these served Korean bakeries when they make them fresh, they're like this big and it's full of fresh custard. No, they are. They're like that, aren't they? Have you seen them? Bet you're exaggerating yourself. Where have you seen yourself? Bet you exaggerate yourself a lot as well. I watch a lot of bakery online, lads. In Bolton. I watch a lot of bakery online. I know me sponges and I know me custard. That was Midnight Snack powered by Midnight. Built for now. Not like the old school bookies. It's quick to use. Simple to navigate with no messing about.

25:28Remember, you've got to be 18 or older and please gamble responsibly. Something that amused me was Portugal against Uzbekistan. Ronaldo scores and announces, I'm back. I mean, it's Uzbekistan. Ain't they not bad, though? So when he said, I'm back, was that lip reading? Yeah, it was lip reading. I'm back. I'm back. I mean, maybe he didn't even say that. Maybe he just went, I'm bad. Michael Jackson throwback either way.

26:07Nicky:I always think, why is he saying it in English as well? Why is he not saying it in Portuguese? Where's he back from? That's the thing, he's crazy. I mean, we know him, don't we? It's all like his persona. He's not bad, you know. They've got a city centre-half. I love the way United welcomed him back when he came back. Exactly! Like he disappeared for a pint of milk. I'm back I'm back it's Cannavaro Cannavaro's the manager but yeah I mean I don't think anyone questions the player he was and his aura and his importance to the football itself and Portugal and even I said it the other week if someone's in front of a goal you want him he's going to score a goal but it's the other side of it when it's not going when you're not playing against Uzbekistan that's the problem Paddy's got a good point it's when he gets to the better team it's going to be I don't know I still look he's amazing and his two goals were brilliant and he's dry for a 41 year old he's dry he's dry determination he's self-discipline like it's almost like that game the other week like upset him and he must have heard what was going on and he's gone I'll show you he texts it personal and the fact that Messi scores and they're a big player score he's like Alan and batter and it's part of his personality and what makes him great it's the arrogance that comes with it as well though there's a certain level of arrogant showmanship that if things aren't going in his favour, it makes him look a bit silly.

27:33It makes him look like a bit of a prick. But when he was at United, he was the reason, but going back, when did he leave? What year did he leave, roughly? To go to Madrid. Oh, yeah. 2008, was it? 2008. So he was the reason that I had to stop playing fantasy football. So we used to do it all the time. But I had a rule, I'd never put a United player in my team. And you literally... That's bitter, Chris. Come on. You couldn't... You don't want to win? No, do you know what? Because I couldn't handle that kind of, that little sense of like, if he scored three goals for United and I had him as a captain, I couldn't live with myself for being like, oh yes, get in.

28:10So I had to stop playing because you could only do well if you had him as your captain. I've got to say, fantasy football does ruin football for you. I play it, I'm in leagues with lads and exactly what Chris said, drives me mad when a player who you can't stand, you're rooting for him to do well is that rivalry of football fans as well is good isn't it I wouldn't drive past City's ground if he had to go somewhere do you know what I mean and there was remember Key 103 yeah they used to sponsor City and we used to listen to Key 103 as soon as that happened off off yeah gone I could see him going past the City ground in that golf buggy he used to have getting eked riding past yeah I don't think he'll last that far from now but the badge should be gone I was going to say I did fantasy football for Sky a few years ago during the TV series my rule was I had no United players no City players no Arsenal no Chelsea no Everton and no Tottenham players in my team I had such morals on who I would have and I would like to say that it worked in my fact I came like third from bottom but I did it with dignity might be a good reason for that Chris did it with honour did it with honour you could hold your head high at least you weren't bottom honourable honourable dignified loser and you know when we're talking about like Ronaldo's and the goats of the game and you're talking there Nicky about players you want in front of the goal where you go now Messi he's scored another two goals but it just shows you're all infallible misses a penalty that man's a freak yeah but you just go like you didn't put your mortgage on no he's not a great penalty record they were saying I think he's missed three out of seven in the World Cups has he?

29:50he's not got a brilliant penalty record no how does that work though? It's messy. I know. And you expect him to do it. Is it because he's got time to think about it? No, I don't think so. Did you notice he did the stutter? I hate it. I hate it. Danny Murphy actually said it well on the camera. So he does his stutter, he's delaying and delaying, but the keeper already went and the keeper's already gone to the side he's going. Because you're automatically trying to get it more in the corner, I think. And with that, he ends up missing it. I think it's an unbelievable character when you've missed a penalty and then you come back and score goals.

30:26We've all played in games. We must have played in games, Nick, where we've missed a penalty. You think, fuck, you know, you want the crown to swallow you up. A question for the two of you then. Do you think penalties should count towards goal tallies? Yes. You do, yeah? Definitely. I don't like that. I don't like it when penalties are counted towards golden boots and things like that. Because you've got Gary Lineker talking about how Harry Kane's the best striker England have ever had. And he's a great player. He's a good striker. But he scored 10 World Cup goals now, five of them penalties that for me it takes away from the tally of being an outfield strike they scored an outfield goals 25 of his 80 goals have been penalties yeah I think you're right because it does take all I think Cole wouldn't take penalties because of that he said he only wants his goals from player yeah yeah yeah it does take a little bit away

31:14Nicky:but there's still a massive skill to score on a penalty I'll tell you something now you talk about like I wouldn't want to be having that pressure on me in a World Cup final or something to take a penalty Oh yeah He's done it I think I think the penalty Should have to be taken By whoever's penalised I don't think That's like basketball You have to take it If it's you That plays the ball For a handball You take the penalty If you're brought down You take the penalty And then I think It probably stops Players from going down Who don't want The way to that responsibility Who would rather Try and play the ball through Do you know what I mean Yeah it's a good show And when you said There you just mentioned Gary Lineker that it was so weird when it's sitting in pop-up on ITV yeah what's going on there I know he didn't do the full thing but it's obviously to put the BBC's nose out of John I think Gary quite likes a bit of controversy don't he anything to rub the BBC's face a little bit you know just like we've never spoke about pundits and what have you but from any era who's your top three pundits who you love when the foot is on you go oh I'm glad it's them talking about it you know what I will say I think ITV is so much better than BBC well you're wrong but that's alright oh I'm not being thinking yeah no I forgot about your contract it's in his big break contract I forgot about your contract he's all elements of BBC I will say I will say where ITV have absolutely smashed it out of the park is going out there and the set looks amazing yeah but I wouldn't say the punditry is that better have you just gone against the BBC no no what I'm saying is the BBC and this is what I can't understand I think the punditry is better well I can't understand why the BBC haven't sent anyone out there everyone's out there apparently they're doing that from the quarter finals or something aren't they are they?

33:03they have sent people out there Alan Shearer is out there and the commentators are out there co-commentators but the pundits are in Manchester no I know but yeah that's what I'm saying I can't get my head around that but where I can't understand or where you were saying about the ITV are better there's no getting round it I think personally Gary Lineker as a pundit all those years on the BBC was head and shoulders No he wasn't a pundit though was he? No but as a yeah I know you're saying he wasn't a pundit but he never used to just ask questions he'd put an opinion in there as well I'm not saying BBC are bad don't get me wrong they're still very good but I think they're a younger group I think you've got your Ian Wright your Roy Keane your Gary Neville I like Duncan Ferguson on as well.

33:50I like Emma Raisip. What do you think about the tactics that she's been doing? I like that. I like it. That's brave to do that. That's what I'm saying. This World Cup, you're right, they've smashed it out of the bag. You've got a contract with BBC. It's a bit of a no-win for the BBC though, isn't it? Can you imagine all the cuts they're making? They've sent everybody out on the jolly. I think it's a little bit of a no-win for them. You're right, really. The BBC do have that. It's in my contract. Let's keep it on brand new. I tell you what, if you slag off the Antiques Roadshow, I'll have to defend that as well.

34:28Are we doing our top three pundits? Yeah, for me, I'm going... All time? All time. Yeah, yeah. Say it in Greavesy. Well, you've gone two straight away. We're presenters, though. Oh, yeah, together, aren't we? Oh, all time. Well, we could go presenters, like nostalgia. I love watching... I tell you what, I'll just change the lines, go top five. We're going to be screwed with top. right I'm going Ali McCoyst I think he's amazing you know what he's brilliant at slagging somebody off but not offending him it's fucking unbelievable that is a skill that's a talent he's brilliant at him you don't quite have that do you Paul no I'm afraid no I wish he had I'm very jealous

35:05Nicky:you've got to put Lineker in there presenter by the way it's a generic top five not just you that's two you've gone 1-1-1-1 this is what I mean about it it is hot in the room you do get aggressive right i'm saying we're all going to do our own here i'm just starting this all week i'm still right so you've done your first two uh mccoy's linica yeah uh i'm going righty yeah i'm going roy this this is brilliant get this go on i'm going roy this is amazing do you know why like because not the bbc yes no linica was you've got three out of four did like 30 odd you're at the bbc you've got three out of four itv and what you're waiting for now bbc and you're trying to find a BBC one for the number five and I'm going to go I'm going to go modern like I could go Anson Lawrenson from back of the Satan's Greasy but I'm going to go modern and it's Shearer oh Shearer as well I'm going to go Big Meeks I like him I like him he brings something to it he's got a smile in his voice you can't not like him he's got a smile in his voice yeah I like that he makes it a bit more kind of like enjoyable yeah I love him to be honest I like people who make me smile and make me laugh exactly that's what I mean and don't take it too seriously along the way I think he's good valued he's very happy but you weren't having that when I first said it Michael Richards yeah you weren't having it not all time I'm talking about pundits who really detailed football I mean no one makes me smile more than watching Paul Merson doing Sucker Saturday when it goes to and he can't pronounce anyone's name Cammy do you know what you know what and also I can't believe a name I've not said Jeff Stellan brilliant doing that show on Soccer Saturday as well was a skill you've got your it's the same kind of thing Roy Keane for me right so like as a player obviously just oh god hated him because he was good and he was a bastard I mean he was a good bastard but you would have loved him if he was your bastard and he wasn't he was somebody else's bastard so obviously grew up hating Roy Keane and as a pundit oh god I love him because I mean first of all when he gets excited he goes so high I think only dogs are listening to him right he gets so high pitched but when United have been shit he will go to town on them more than anybody else will that's what I love about these two to be fair you know and these two are United through and through but I like how you know they'll call it as they see it you know what I mean and Roy Keane definitely does that I love listening to him go to town on United right come on then you three give us some names I love do you know what as a double act we talk about Satan Greavesy from back in the day brilliance but as a modern double act I love Carragher and Neville I love the arguments they have I love the fact that they don't kind of just agree with each other for pleasantries or anything and it's some real needle though Yeah, yeah, yeah.

38:13Them two are very good. I love Rye as well. I think Graeme Souness is brilliant. Oh, Graeme Souness, of course. Yeah, Graeme Souness. Brilliant. And I think massively, you know, just slightly too early as a Liverpool manager in terms of his forward-thinking approach, really, in terms of, you know, nutrition and tactics and the science behind it. Yeah, yeah. Great. Who would you pick? No. give me five no so we've gone way back we've talked about different ones but five no I said I said Micah Richards and Righty who are current and Shearer as well brilliant all three of them BBC I really like I really I mean just a little bit of gender balance I really like Karen Carney yeah she's good Karen do you know what Karen Carney's brilliant and also as well she is an absolute diamond off screen I did it with brilliant for BT

39:11Nicky:and I tell you what the in-depth stuff she does for like half an hour before she's very good and Chris you've got something in common with Karen oh yeah twinkle toes more than you think as well because me and Karen we both live in the same place we were next door neighbours believe it or not really so we met me and Karen met during lockdown and we met because we had the same communal garden and then she moved around the corner and so she goes to the same gym as my wife so we have we have kept the glitter ball in the same postcode area. I love that. I'm going to ask you about Strictly in a sec, but just on Karen, I can honestly say people you meet in your life who you just go, thank God people like them are in the world.

39:55She's one of them. She's just an absolute good egg. And she's good when they give her the headset to go behind the gold as well. You know, getting the energy from the crowd and being that kind of touchline. And do you know what? She works really hard. She was all the rest of her. Brilliant. Great, great, great, great. Right, Karen's in there. Well, let's just talk about Strictly then because I was going to say, as a surprise booking, no one looked more surprised than you. You must have been like, when you got the call going, fucking dancing, what's going on here? Unless you're a secret talented dancer that you never talked to anyone about.

40:30I said no three times. Do you know who I'd love to see on Strictly? This lad at the side of me, Paul Scholes. I would love to see him on the just to see him react to music since I was 12

40:42Nicky:so what what's he like on the dance floor I've never seen him dance once yeah I see I see I reckon I'd need about 14 pints to even think about it I've seen Scully dance on his wedding his wedding day that lasted about five seconds yeah and do you know what I'd love to see the purry you're on there's a double act wait a minute Paddy he's a brilliant dancer who? drunk dancer no he's unbelievable drunk dancer oh wow him and Giggs on the dance floor really? he's brilliant do we see a little bit? do you know what as well show us a few moves when Paul Merson was on with us and I loved the fact that because they really try and over hype what it is to do strictly right?

41:21and some people go on it oh it's been my dream and blah blah blah blah and there's a few of us when me Pete works Paul Merson kind of like you know we've been talked into this and they said to Paul on one of the episodes your mum's in the audience you know this must be so proud for her to see you on this show and he went what do you mean he said I'd play for England

41:46get a grip of yourself I love it your family must be buzzing with that do you know the greatest moment for me on Strictly Tony Adams doing that striptease to was it hot or not it was the full Monty unbelievable scenes gold that right shops this week that prize guy i've got a treat for all the family a two thousand pounds voucher for a trip to center parks uh head over to that prize guy dot core dot uk to enter now for just 99 pence so on account of that trip to center parks i want you lads to rank some of the activities you can do the best to last okay i'm going to give you we've got five activities and you're thinking now with the kids right so we've got water park with all the slides and wave machines we've got laser quest we've got bowling alley pedaloes and zip wire swimming's number one for me zip wire number one yeah that's about fucking 30 seconds he's an adventurer then what do you do he's an adventurer that's what he's like

42:51Nicky:on zip wire right into the pool that's my first two hoisting tightening everything up around your jaffas it's number five for me but it's your list you've got one i've gone five where you put your zip wires oh uh zip wires i can't remember bowling swimming's number one i'll go away on that that's a full you've got a full afternoon with the kids chips after what's wrong with a swimming pool what no go on not for me what's off the swimming there's chlorine in it and also it's not like i I don't like swimming pools. It's my fucking top five. How can you not like a swimming pool? How do you go on a holiday?

43:28Nicky:I jump in, get cold, I jump out. You jump out of a pool? Are you good at that? Yeah. He's got some fucking power in them pods, hasn't he? Fucking hell. I jump out. It's not the water boy. It's not the club. Fucking Aquaman. Right, we've got the other three now is Laser Quest, Balling. In fact, Balling could be number four for me. And Pedalos. Right, so Pedalos last because they're pointless. listen if you go against the breeze you're there all day then i've got bowling it's not only a lake i was going to say you're in a lake yeah there's no wind there you're not on the no wind there have you ever been to the lake at kinta you can't get back if the wind's going the wrong way yeah but this is my it's my top five this is in fucking center park penriff there's no wind in penriff we're not on that lake there's no wind in penriff right me pedalo bowling what's the other one er laser quest laser quest swimming ziplining first so laser quest is three you can't laser quest I'd have laser quest as two after swimming I think top five me zip wire swimming pool laser quest bowling and last but not least pedalo do you understand that one yes I did yeah and what's yours erm swimming laser quest bowling what was the other one pedaloes and zip wire pedaloes and zip wire I can't believe I've not put archery in that archery's good it is a good archery I'm going to go water park bowling pedaloes laser quest zip wire there's two things archery and rock climbers should be on there do you know why I've put laser quest a bit low down because there's nothing worse than when you get a few knobhead dads in there who think they're fucking Rambo it's just a bit of fun this it's just a bit of fun cover me it's a game a laser question no i was just thinking about doing it with friends i weren't thinking about all that lovely stuff yeah i like that well there we are we've ranked our top five activities to do at center park what about biking you're on the bike track perfect brilliant the raps and stuff yeah obviously little girl when she was younger they're painting the cups and the plates and stuff nice and just relax a little bit no no no no is that an activity though Well yeah of course it is Yeah what's it called Pottery Pottery Arts and crafts Oh do you know another one Arts and crafts The indoor climbing walls And then you have a little chill out Draw a few plates Don't like heights Get them in the oven Magic Go back and get them the next day You don't like heights No What's your limit Like if you're out at home And you're on the stepladders You're out with them Or is it proper heights Yeah any heights Don't look like them Well alright then What's climbing to the The cab of an HGV Too high for you Like where were we getting I'm going to piss out my side.

46:13Where are we going here? Where are we going with that? I just don't like heights. They get a bit wobbly with them. Anyhow, remember to get yourself over to thatprizeguy.co.uk for your chance to win a£2 ,000 centre-parks voucher for just 99 pence. Right, while we've got you here, Chris, now this can be, a bit like when we were talking about pundits, any era. I want you to do your comedian's six-a-side. okay so it's comedians playing in a team yeah not because of football qualities I'd imagine just well you can you can mix a bit of both and it's a six aside it's normally a five aside why six well because you're in it oh I'm in it so I'm in the team put the extra player that's the level we've reached everyone because you're in the team we'll have to add an extra one oh you give it to us one hand and take away with the other let's start let's start with your goalkeeper in goal comedian six aside alright do you know what let's stick my mate Rob Beckett in goal motor mouth won't stop talking he'll be shouting at the team in front of him and I reckon those big teeth of his as well when the sun catches them anyone coming down on goal they'll get their like sun and they're like absolutely no chance I was do you know what when you said Rob that he's another great lad where I thought I wonder how long it is until you mention his teeth there you go Straight in the...

47:43Teet so big, even I know. Defence, no. Who's your defenders? Well, defence. Let's go for some height in defence, shall we? Should we go for Greg Davis? And Tom Davis and Greg Davies? I think Greg Davis would have been a good shirt for your goalkeeper with a height. And Big T, Big Tom. Yeah, we'll stick the two of them in defence, I think. Right, OK, we've got three. Six foot eight, he is. say something who is I thought you was in with the show

48:14Nicky:Paddy's face dropped because I don't know if you know it but Paddy's a record goalkeeper at Soccer Raid and thinks every time I get a goalkeeper on he talks tactics because I like goalkeepers it's absolutely devastated his record is he's conceded the most goals no I've not no I've not I've stopped the most but it was just in that one game and to be fair it was Carlos I lost fucking Tevez. I can't like Tevez again. Who just finished playing. He was 98. And didn't get the memo. I'm just putting it out there. Sorry, Chris. Sorry. Sorry about that, Chris. Any chance to get to character assassinating me, they will.

48:53The comedians who play soccer aid, right? They think they're playing in the World Cup. Lee Mack scored one goal. He never stopped. You would think it's the greatest thing that's ever happened in his life. Yeah, but also as well, when I ever see Lee Mack, when he talks about that goal, I do remind him, Joel Domit was in the nets. Right? And he was in the nets because I'd got injured. So they just went, Joel, do you mind going to nets for this? The first one he lets in, because he tries to just put his foot on the ball, because it's rolls when it goes under his foot into the net. And Lee Mack's running off, pulling his shirt off as though he's just pulling past.

49:27Didn't Lee Mack play for rest of the world, but he's English? He started off as England, then went rest of the world. He's a great lad. I played a game with him as well. Lee's one of them people. because it's funny in comedy. There's some really brilliant comedians out there who you wouldn't necessarily would want to sit down in a pub and have a laugh with. And then you've other comedians who are brilliant, but you could sit down and have a laugh and Lee's one of them. And there's some comedians that are a really good laugh when you're working with them, but you couldn't imagine what it's like to live with them.

50:01Oh, yes. Yes, there is. Right. Where are we? We need a midfield player, don't we? Midfield. Have we run the... About three. Two midfield, one forward. Two midfielders, one forward. Two midfielders. OK, right. Well, let's go with... I'm going to go... Let's stick John Richardson in midfield because he's so anally organised about everything that I think he'd be able to organise the team around him. Is he acting now? He's in Waterloo Road, isn't he, John Richardson? Is he the one at 8 out of 10? Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But he's so neurodiversely OCD. He'd have that team in shape from the centre of the pitch without kicking the ball himself, I think.

50:42I love that. Right, who's at the side of him? I'll tell you what, let's go with a little bit of a play on words here, but let's go with Ben Elton because he's got a fast-paced delivery. Oh, I love it. So, Ben Elton for his fast delivery. Have you met him, Chris? Ben. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I've met him a few times. Exactly that. Because before I ever met him, I thought, bloody hell, it's Ben Elton. the track record and the persona he has on stage, I thought, oh, Christ, what's this going to be like? Two people I've met like that in comedy where I was worried were Ben Elton and Alexi Sale. And I absolutely loved being in the company.

51:21So generous, so lovely to talk to. Who's the god of comedians? Oh, you're right. Is he not a one? No, it's a personal thing. I had an ITV show a couple of years ago, a year and a half ago, interviewing people and stuff like that. And I'd never interviewed anybody or anchored a show like that before. My first guest was Paul Whitehouse. And my last guest on the series was Ben Elton. And having them on a thing that I was doing, they were, when I had Paul Whitehouse on at the beginning, honestly, I'm sat there opposite him. I'm interviewing him, learning how to interview on the job, really. And in me head, my brain is just going, you're interviewing Paul Whitehouse?

52:01Yeah, yeah, yeah, exactly. Shut up, I'm trying to talk to Paul Whitehouse You almost want to With people at Art and All and Ben You want to Ask them stuff but you think you can't do That like, it's like these two Sometimes these two will be talking And I'll be sat there and they'll be talking about The dressing rooms at Barcelona and in my head I'm going Fucking hell That's outrageous but like You forget, you've got to Stop yourself kind of fanboying A little bit, haven't you? You have yeah you have and I had to stop myself from doing a smashy impression in front of Paul Whitehouse it felt brilliant right and finally well you know obviously we've only got one left listen it sounds quite arrogant I'm sticking myself up front because as we've learned from the England game and Garner's performance the main thing is keeping a clean sheet so we've got a solid defence we've got the midfield sorted we're going to keep a clean sheet with Rob Beckett in goal and Greg and Tom in defence and then basically there's more chance of the ball hitting me and going in accidentally if I'm up front if I just run around and make a nuisance of myself and try not to run into the goalposts.

53:12Who's your manager?

53:13Nicky:Oh, that's a good one. Oh, do you know what? Who was talking about the last one laughing before? Was it you, Paul? Yeah. Yeah, let's think Bob. Bob Mortimer. Bob, yeah. Because we know, you know you've got the hydration breaks, right? Yeah. Well, he'd have a little bit of pocket meat, wouldn't he? Oh, he loves a pocket meat. For the little pocket meat break. Have you watched a fishing program he does with Paul Lighthouse? Yeah, yeah, yeah. How good's that? It's good, isn't it? Brilliant, yeah. They've got that. Sometimes TV programs come along where you go, oh, they've just cracked it there. And there's nothing to it.

53:43It's just a nice, gentle watch. Whack it on. It's mad, isn't it? You go, watching people fish is going to be good telly. Do you know what makes me laugh, though? It's like you watch something like Gogglebox, right? And I can't get my head around it. I'm like, what? you're just watching people watch the telly. And then, you know, somebody pointed out to me, it's literally what you do with soccer. You're watching people watch football. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, it is true. It is true, yeah. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. It's the same thing, isn't it? On that fishing pro, have they ever caught a fish? I don't think I've ever seen one where they caught a fish.

54:15Yeah, yeah, yeah. Well, Paul's the kind of expert. Proper angler. Yeah, and Bob sort of. But I think Bob's got more into it as he's gone along. But it's just a lovely, nice, gentle watch. And you forget, no, there's a generation of people watching them too.
