In short

Football talk focused on Arsenal’s early-season form after beating Chelsea 2-1, debate over why other title contenders aren’t matching Arsenal’s defensive solidity, and Manchester United’s struggles (Everton 2-2) tied to recruitment—especially the lack of a true centre-forward. Also includes transfer/window discussion (Enzo Fernández to Man City; Chelsea’s midfield choices), VAR/discipline complaints, and a “Built Different Index” ranking debate about biggest English clubs.

Guests/backgrounds

The episode features Bill Simmons (host) and two co-hosts/guests who are former footballers/football personalities (referred to as Paul and Nicky; also mentions “Scholes” and “Gary Neville” as comparisons). They discuss their own school/playing backgrounds and football careers, but the transcript doesn’t clearly identify their full names beyond “Bill Simmons” and “Paul and Nicky.”

Key claims

Arsenal are “unstoppable” and the best team in the league due to defensive strength (even before Saliba returns) and Saka/Odegaard impact. Chelsea are not ready defensively and made a “madness” decision selling Enzo to a rival. Man United’s back line is not enough and their attack lacks a focal centre-forward; they may need a more compact/protective midfield approach.

Notable examples

Arsenal vs Chelsea 2-1; Raya’s save and keeper errors; Gabriel Martinelli boot Martinez incident (should’ve been a red, per hosts); Everton vs Man United 2-2 (Everton space, United timid); Enzo Fernández interview as a City player; Tottenham spending spree and slow start.

Transfer windows closed, lads. Lads. Lads. Which lad? Lads. I like lads. I only had something else in my head that you know what it is, I'm very giddy at lads. Hall of third. They're flying. It's only because I made the prediction before the season started and everyone poo-pooed it. but hey not conceded a goal yet them lads that's a good sign good sign are you with me now on them staying up not sure no I don't think so

2:05Nicky:I think too early too early to say anything about winning it or going down it's just but it's fair what he's done is amazing you know back in the Premier League not to concede a goal massive for him I like it I like it when teams come up and do well at that straight away before we get into the football chat we always have a little bit of a you know just a tata a tata What have you got planned? A few things. Well, we were chatting off camera though. Obviously, the kids are back at school today. Before I had kids, my favourite day of the week used to be Friday. Right. Since I've had kids, it's Monday.

2:39Hands in, lads. Who's with me? Get them back. Get them back. Our kids are older now. We're past all that. You had kids late, didn't you? What's your favourite day of the week now, then? Friday, always Friday. Thursday. Because you've got it to look forward to.

2:53Nicky:Thursday? is a good day, isn't it? It is a good day. Friday, Friday. It's the start of the weekend, really, isn't it? It's the start of the weekend. Yeah. We've had a question in straight away. This is from Callum in Leeds, who's another Field fan. He wants to know, what were Paul and Nicky like at school? Did you go to the same school, you two, by the way? No. No. No, we're different areas, but yeah. I've got to say, I wasn't a big fan of school. I was a big fan of my friendship group at school. But I wasn't, pretty much like everybody, I wasn't really engaged in school. It was all more about not getting in trouble.

3:33Nicky:Nicky left when I was 11. For me, school was all about, how am I laughing with your mates? Yeah. I was never cheeky to the teachers. My dad would have killed me. I pushed the limits, let's be honest, like most of the lads did. I just didn't like all the work. I didn't like the homework. I couldn't wait to get away from school and start football I think when you're looking back at it now when you sign for United at 13-14 it really puts your mind in a total difference I was just so focused on trying to be a footballer and that's not the right thing to do you've obviously got to try and look in the background and go maybe I won't make it but there's swings and roundabouts to that if you're and I get it as parents do with players now young kids now you've got to also look at your education which the clubs do nowadays which is brilliant but the flip side of that is I was always brought up I'll put it as goals it would be last as I could say probably the same as you if you want something go all out and go for it go and try and make your dreams and something will give and for me it was school I give I hated school yeah see I didn't mind it I hated it because of what Nicky said you may hate someone yeah I didn't mind like playing football do you hate it just because of the lessons and all the rest of it do you know something a lot of kids are like that I were a bit like that with certain lessons and I think if you have a good teacher, school's better.

4:54And what I mean by that is, we all went to school around about the same years. Some of my teachers back in the day would literally turn around, start writing on the board, back to you. Rude. Never engage with you properly. And as a kid, you're just thinking, oh, shite this. You're just thinking,

5:13Nicky:target at you for chalk. Teacher's back. Don't turn your back. Do you know where you have excuses when you're a kid. Oh, we had a geography teacher and I said, he used to throw chalk at you. Oh, I've had that. On the board. Board dust. Board dust, do you? Yeah. If you did something wrong. Like an house brick. He just used to fucking launch it. He did it to me when I threw a piece of chalk. I don't know why, I picked it up and threw it back at him. It landed. He had a pair of glasses on. Landed and stuck. Stuck. Even then he had the eye. He stuck in between his glasses in his eyes. Girl went for me.

5:46Didn't like it. I think another standard thing back in the day when we were at school that all teachers used to do would write in your report easily distracted. Yeah, yeah. Did you ever watch it? Could do better.

5:56Nicky:Yeah, a few, yeah. No one again, but it weren't, I wasn't big enough. You know, my school life, it was really weird because they actually let us down. They let me down my school. Oh, God. Honestly, because I literally, let me down. I'd go into school and you'd just go in at about, I don't know, half ten. Half ten? Yeah. And you'd get a late card and that's it. You didn't get, It was easy for me to wake it up because my mum and dad used to go to work at 7 in the morning and come back at 5 at night. I'd just stay home all day. Sign my mum's name on the phone. I did that once and my dad... No, I'll tell you what I did and I wouldn't sign it.

6:32Nicky:I know you get your school report and you'd be going off. I've opened it, read it. I thought, I'm dead. I'm dead. Yeah. But my dad never told me off because the state of the report told me off for opening a letter that was addressed to him. Yeah. Honest to God, he was going to kill me. I was liking so much. You know what you think about? our schooling back in the day, right? Because as opposed to now, this is another thing at our school. So last two years of my life, I got sent off to another school with all the, like, kids who we consider a little bit unruly. So we're all there. I loved it. But my mate rocked up one day in his school uniform, in a car.

7:10Driving. Drove, scooby. It ran out, Nissan Sonny. Right? So you're saying you got expelled from your schooling? I never know what they did. Very again, wrong. This a bit like what you were saying. All lads like me and girls who were kind of a little bit, you know, out there kind of messing about this and the other, but not mega naughty. They got us all together and went, Hey, we've got this new school. And if you go there, you don't have to do much written work. It's all practical. So we're all like, for the thick ones, I've got to say, no, it weren't that. It weren't that. because this is this is to nicky's point a lot of bright kids at that school but just the teachers didn't yeah invest enough time and they don't know how to deal with them i got i went to see i like this chat i left this he's got this i was like 15 i got a letter about we're not entering

8:01Nicky:nicholas for any um exams i'm like what so i just left school went and made filing cabinets yeah well that does show now still when we have conversations to make filing cabinets it's like surely God they've got to let you go to school from the age of 4 to 16 you don't even enter your exams it's ridiculous yeah my mates turned up in a car and me metalwork teacher used to let us drive cars round the tennis courts with no doors on fuck crack and no fucking citrus but you ended up top gear didn't you there you go exactly exactly anywho shall we get into football lads here we go right here we go Arsenal 2 Chelsea 1 firstly I enjoyed watching that game proper game wasn't it good game end to end game it was like a throwback game two top teams going at each other I enjoyed it I really enjoyed the game both seemed up for it and do you know what else I'm glad Chelsea scored first because I thought oh no this is it now here we go yeah because the game probably needed that didn't it if Arsenal scored first it could have been a little bit a mess and all the rest of it yeah That was a good game to watch, wasn't it?

9:14Do you like a bit more attacking from Arsenal? Because obviously last season, everyone were banging on about set pieces. I was especially.

9:22Nicky:I think that's natural that. When you're going for your first title, obviously the manager, not the club, and the squad that is built, they are going to be a bit apprehensive. And we spoke about this previously on the podcast, that it can be a bit boring. Everyone can have a pop at them. But they've now got that title. So naturally the players will be a bit more relieved. they're not playing five games to the end of the season when they're going for the title they're free to go and play football now and it won't be until you get to like November, December when you see it starts to shape up a little bit they might have had a few bad results and they might change again but at the minute they should be playing with freedom they've started a lot better and a lot more entertaining than they have been I think but I think Saka makes a big difference in that as well Saka didn't play for an awful lot towards the end of the last season I don't think Havertz did either and Odegaard is the one if all the guys are informed doing what he does yesterday I think Gary said on commentary don't really get in the Marys enough but if he does get in the Marys he's got quality to win your games of football they're still a team to beat obviously that's an obvious statement when being champions however forget the champions they're still the best team in the league well it gets me you two played the game Keller Fury I watch him I'm not quite sure where he's playing I couldn't believe it there was one time in the first half he was like almost right wing yeah that's your left back yeah no I know don't you think fullbacks are like that now though they just do what they want fullbacks nowadays as Arteta said that to him he said Luke if you feel as though you want to go over there go over there is that is that there's all them fullbacks that come inside to them in the picture place and I'm a feeling like that look I don't think that the plan for him to go on the right and side sometimes in a game it just happens and you have to have your own mind you're trying to like defend against a team out where you've got a player were in your training all week and the manager just come out and said you're doing this you're doing that he'll be there he'll be there and then he's over in on right wing yeah how does that work it's not great sometimes when we play standing midfield especially I don't know how we'd cope with full backs in midfield I think we both said what the fuck are you doing here yeah I've said this before about you know if Gary Neville or Dennis Irving or Phil Neville or Patrice Evercomer what the fuck are you doing get them all what else to do do you know what I mean I think we find it really strange but it just seems the way Chelsea had two playing in there three full backs playing ended up with two in there playing so they are a lot more naturally gifted nowadays a lot of full backs now start as wingers and then they move back so when you go into midfield they come up high up the pitch and naturally okay with it whereas back when we played a lot of full backs one or two Neff was a perfect example he's a midfielder end up back as a right back but a lot of full-backs back then were natural defenders anyway, so they're never going to be that expansive going forward.

12:11Nicky:But nowadays, a lot of them are attacking players. Arsenal have changed a bit, hasn't it? Because a lot of full-backs, you see, especially over the last few years, especially in City's team probably, they're all attacking full-backs. Whereas Arsenal, they play like four centre-halves really across the back four, but they actually turn into good attacking players as well. But the biggest strength is still defensively. I mean if you look at what Arsenal did yesterday and how they play it's a total flip to Chelsea look at Chelsea's forward line you look at Chelsea's forward line and the midfielder midfield sorry is very very good the back fours they're all over the show you can see so many chances Chelsea I don't see them challenging not after yesterday I did no I don't and I said that at the start of this series but I did but looking at them you're thinking they let too many chances you know there's like trends in football where a certain team starts doing a certain thing like when Pep first come over is all that ticky tacky, whatever it is, all that carry on and playing out from the back.

13:07And then slowly it comes into the game. The one thing what you just said then about Arsenal and the defence and everyone knows how strong they are, and they've added Konza, which is a good signing. That doesn't seem to have caught on with the rest of the league. Do you know what I mean? You look at United, I'm on about the teams. I think the set-piece thing caught on, didn't it? Were they the first to have a set-piece coach? I don't know they were scoring all them goals for the last two or three years I think that has caught on the set piece stuff has caught on yeah but when you look at when we're talking about Chelsea now and they go on about Pedro, Rodgers and Palmer up front but they struggle at the back and then United at the back again why are these teams who are trying to win the league not following Arsenal's lead and building up a really strong defensive unit because it seems to me that sometimes can get you into the league the thing with it

14:05Nicky:Paddy is if you look at squads so Man United their strengths are not at the back and they're not going to be out going by three or four obviously not now but even in transfer windows so what they did last year was forward this window midfielder next might be back four but everything that's built at Arsenal is on their defensive strengths so their problem has always been centre forwards so each squad have different make-ups within their squads and you've just got to try and play to your strengths now Man United going off subjects a little bit they have to go and try and score as many goals as they can because they're going to concede Arsenal don't Chelsea's a bit like United they can go and score as many goals as they want Chelsea but they're going to concede pretty much a goal two goals every game they will do just the way they play Arsenal don't do that they're so sure and so solid at the back so what they've really got to do is goals and hit touchdown every foot if they score one goal or the first goal you fancy them to go and win every game that they're involved in but if they lose a goal and they've got to come out and play that's when you'll realise how good they are going forward.

15:02I think most experienced managers, they always say that we'll build a team from the back going forward. And as Nicky said, there's some teams that have done that. Arsenal especially have done that. Remember, they haven't even got Saliba playing yet. It was probably the best time and half in the world. What about the save of Raya made as well? Great save, yeah. I actually thought he should have saved the first goal. That went in a bit slower. I thought Martin should have saved Arsenal's goal as well. Bad weekend for keepers, really. Is this something like everyone's tipping Arsenal to win the league again and you know who knows what I hope it's a bit more exciting than that towards the end of the season but just the fact that they beat Chelsea who are considered a title rival now how big of a difference is that mentally I don't think Chelsea are a title rival to me are you not?

15:49no I think they've got a bit of work to do well you think they've let Enzo go to City yeah who's probably their best midfield player Caicedo still not said don't get me wrong him as well. And as you mentioned before, they're playing two full-backs in midfield. Now Rhys James is alright as a midfield player. I don't think you're going to get 38 games out of him in there. Gusto came on as a midfield player. Obviously, Kai Seedow is a big mess for him but still, I still think they've got issues defensively. What are you saying about him playing them two in midfield and they had the chance to keep Enzo?

16:19Why did they not keep him? Knowing they're going to be lacking in midfield. That's the question, isn't it?

16:26Nicky:So he must be in so much rush to get out of that club he must be kicking up a fuss you don't let you one of your best players go to your rivals yeah I think they promised Chelsea to him and to City that I could go now sometimes you don't care about that but you know I mean it's still our player yeah and they failed to get the lab they wanted from Monaco I think it was so at the last minute they know they failed they could have stopped but they could have stopped that happening and do you think he's gone well Luke you're trying to get someone else in so I'm off no he knows he's going to be the main man no no that was nothing because he wanted to go they wouldn't have been looking for somebody else but he had won that if Alonso had taken over wouldn't you think he'd want to stay there now yeah and like I said for Chelsea Chelsea have been very nice about this do you know what I mean yeah because they could have stopped that and if you're thinking about your own your own team look at that team yesterday in centre midfield no you'd think oh I wouldn't mind having Enzo Fernandes playing for us today do you know what I mean I don't think that's something that Sir Alex would do or a manager we played for just seems a weird thing like who knows what goes on behind the scenes but Alonso coming in fresh start really good manager I think you have to give Chelsea a little bit of credit though for being sticking to the word do you know it's not something that always happens in football do you want a player around as well who clearly doesn't want to be there well that happens all the time but it happens all the time we had Christy I think it Chris Cristiano he wanted to go to know he wanted to go to Real Madrid and the managers said look you can have one more year and then you can go the year after so we've got a player there still who we think probably doesn't want to be here but you know it somewhat Christian he still give you his best for the year do you know I mean and people can suck a course he can but you soon get found out yeah I don't know for Enzo Fernandes personality I don't know it but if he's one that will kick up a fuss and like moan about moats about you're then dragging other people down before you know it you change your room it's a joke I wouldn't have sold him because I think he's the best player the midfielder he's got but I can understand why he would Would you have changed your mind at the last minute like they did Not like they did because they didn't get the lead from Monaco would you say no 100 % not doing it I'd have gone that wasn't the deal was we need to get somebody well you're crazy you should say you can go once we get our guy in now then it's different but let him go and leave yourself as bare as they are I think it's madness.

18:53Nicky:And, you know, he's a massive player for them and it's gone to your rivals. So, I'm not saying City or Chelsea will win the league, but they've got a really good chance. I would say they've got a chance of winning the league. Yeah, I was going to say that. Which everyone, Fernandes goes to, is going to have a better chance than when he leaves. Yeah. It's factual. Do you see Gabriel boot Martinez straight in the face? He should have been sent off. Yeah, ridiculous. What happened there? VAR looked at that. I don't know. How was that? I missed that yesterday. How was he not a card? Honestly. It should be a red card.

19:22Nicky:I've seen it this morning. It's like literally... He's not even gone football. He's gone miles over the board. If that's not sending off, there's no point having VAR. Yeah, what is that? I don't understand it. And there's that Brazil-Argentina thing as well. But it was just... I just thought, he gets away with murder that fella sometimes. He does, yeah. There's players that are like that. Like, say me and Nicky, if we make one foul, we've got it booked. There's some players who can foul people ten times because they get up and go, oh, sorry. Do you know what I mean? They get away with it, but some people don't.

19:55And he's one of them. I think the Chelsea players got in the, like, I think everyone just sort of got on. You're right, though.

20:01Nicky:David Ginola, obviously, it's unbelievable footballer, very technical, a gifted player. He did me once at St. John, and I mean, right like that, and straight away, I'm sorry, I always like it, it's fine. If that has been, anybody like, has got a bit of reputation, like, scold you on myself, you're off. Do you think there's a little bit of something with Morgan Rodgers or Declan Rice? did you see well there is now yeah but it's only like i've been a little bit of somewhere during the summer maybe do you know what though what what declan rice did to him oh it's the most annoying thing in the world it pisses me off that when people just like you're doing like people like you yeah oh yeah and by the way that's when you can really get hurt you know when you don't like like you really go and he'd snap done yeah morgan ranchers now it's right yeah by the way he took the challenge well aren't they Rodgers a big price had him going to a club and his players do you know what I think sorry I was a little bit of disappointment yesterday Cole Palmer bit in and out wasn't it yeah he didn't have that usual quality especially in them first two games I mean he was a little bit off it I suppose but do you know what he's playing in a big game I think what's good with Morgan Rodgers he seems like he's big pals with Palmer that's a as well as the football and the skill they grew up in City together didn't they yeah you can see and Pedro seems to be I like about Rodgers he doesn't care where he plays football he wants to be the main man yeah that's easy saying it but you know he goes on a pitch for England sticks his chest out and goes and takes the ball and try I think he's a I think he's a top top player I like Rodgers yeah this episode is brought to you by Google Chrome you think you know a browser but Gemini and Chrome that's new it can help you with practically anything on the web, like restoring a vintage motorcycle from a 50-page restoration block, or finally break down that long article you've had open for weeks.

23:19Now, this is one of them. Oh, dear. The comments will go through the roof because everyone thinks the clubs are the biggest, I think.

23:26Nicky:Prepare to be abused. It's going to be one of two, can't it? Well, before we get into it, Enzo Fernandes did his first interview as a City player, and it's quite punchy what he said. He said he's always dreamed of playing for a club as big as Man City. Now, coming from Chelsea and saying that, punchy. Well, he's going to say that and he's not going to sit there and go, I've stepped down. Is it not disrespectful to Chelsea, though? No, but he's obviously left for a reason, didn't we? He obviously wasn't happy there, was he? Because of what City have done over the last 10 years with Pep, I think they're pretty similar in the size of clubs, in my opinion.

24:04What do you think, right? What makes a club a big club? Is it fans, attendance, or trophies? Is it fans, trophies? I think it's around the world as well. Exposure. I think United and Liverpool are the ones. I'd go United, number one, Liverpool, number two, obviously. I'm pretty sure Liverpool lads would go the other way around. But as far as I've always dreamed, you know when you're a kid? If we were kids and we were playing football, I don't think anybody would ever dream of playing, I want to play for Manchester City. Do you know what I mean? Back then, no, probably all the kids now will want to play for City, won't they?

24:43Especially when I'm at Pepa though. No, I still think they want to play United, Liverpool, Real Madrid, Barcelona before City all day long. Yeah. What, no? Yeah. Yeah. Oh, okay. No, and that's not being, being such a red guy. Would you say City are a bigger club than Chelsea now? No, I don't think it's the size of the club I'm talking about. I think, City's team but when you talk about a club a full club who dreams of playing

25:08Nicky:for Manchester for the last 10-12 years no one can get away it's phenomenal the infrastructure the stadium the training complex the wins the team the players biggest Man United fan about but you can never deny that they've been unbelievable for that I meant to say brilliant team you don't judge a club on 10 years you judge it on the history of the football club the fan base worldwide as you said and as a Man United person Willow is your Man United if you had Robbie Fowler sat there he'd say Liverpool and they both got an argument because the amount of stuff that Liverpool have won particularly European trophies and their following as well is massive but I'd say United, Liverpool like Arsenal well hold on a minute then right give me Premier League your 1-5 big clubs Man United, Liverpool are you going one down?

25:59Nicky:one down Man United, Liverpool well it's not fucking five up is it when we're playing Man United well normally you do a countdown you do go that way that's countdown you just said I'm going down no Man United obviously Man United won right can I give you some stats no need to Man United is the biggest club particularly in the Premier League I'm not disputing that just for the people watching just I'm going to give you fact Manchester United so trophies 20 European Cups That's leagues 20 isn't it Yeah Well Prem and First Division trophies I need together 20 League Average attendance first two games of this season 74 ,000 United Again as Nicky said before didn't it look at if Liverpool had a bigger ground they'd fill their ground as well Yeah I think Arsenal would Well Liverpool have got more European Cups than United Yeah So they've got six, United have got three.

27:01So you're going United, then Liverpool. Who's your third? Arsenal. Now surely you've got to have won a European Cup to be classed as a big team. Would you not say so? I'm only playing devil's advocate here as we're talking about it.

27:17Nicky:Yeah, you would. You'd have to say that, wouldn't you? You think of Arsenal, they are a Premier League Division 1 team. When we were growing up, City were in the third division at one point. Yeah. Chelsea. Yeah. we're in the second division at one point. So, I don't think, have Arsenal ever been out of the league? Out of the Premier League? I think so. Or Division 1? I think, if you take your heart away from it all, I'd still be saying Man United, Liverpool, Arsenal. No matter, I would, and people will say, you got your red head on. But I would definitely say Man United, just a fan base worldwide.

27:49Nicky:I get the Liverpool argument, I did something the other day with Phil Thompson, and I get the argument, European Cup is what it's all about. you win a few Premier Leagues it is all European Cup so I get the argument but I just think from my knowledge of it I've not been aware as a Liverpool player I've not been all aware I'm the world's Liverpool player but I was a Man United player and it is just scary when you go to a hotel in the middle of nowhere and there's 8 ,000 people outside waiting for you I was just going to say the biggest indication when you travel the world and you see shirts now look City and Chelsea are going to get bigger of course they are and you do see the likes of America America was never really big on the Premier League was it but you go over there now and you wouldn't be surprised if you see a lot of City shirts a lot of Chelsea shirts you go to the Far East it's all Man United Liverpool Arsenal you go anywhere Africa anywhere it's like even now as older men like 51 you still get noticed now and you're thinking I finished football 16 years ago it's just it's insane interesting the Premier League and First Division trophies so I said United and Liverpool 20 Arsenal 14 then it's Man City 10 who's next on the list would you think though Chelsea Everton New stadium again it's the 10 No I'm on about trophies Sorry Everton won the league nine times we were growing up Everton were brilliant they were winning the leagues they were winning the league then tied on six Forest as well Forest is a big club Tied on six sorry just Premier League First Division Chelsea and Sunderland but then when we get into the European Cups Liverpool six United three Chelsea 2 Forest as you say Nicky 2 Villa and City 1 apiece Sunderland surprised me they won the league 6 times Sunderland yeah bloody hell I'm coming back that must be some time ago that's there you definitely go on Chelsea after the in the third sorry sorry Man United Liverpool Arsenal Arsenal then you go in Chelsea and then City is it for you Chelsea Chelsea I go in the league 6 times yeah I go city Chelsea so it's Chelsea be five you want me all backwards like you want it'd be Chelsea City Arsenal with a pool money night would you agree with that yeah I think it's hard to split sit in Chelsea but yeah yeah probably just as a curveball when you if you could go any league in the world who would you is the biggest club in the world for all them things you just said real madrid yeah it's got to be on it very close with united very close second man united but just the way the european in the mix though yeah yeah there's between them through yeah put any of your german teams i'd put liverpool into that by munich yeah possibly no okay there you have it folks those you've got your uh Put Liverpool in that mix over United.

30:46Yeah, you do. I'm a dreaded Barcelona. Every time we talk about

30:48Nicky:the big clubs in the world, you have to put Liverpool in the conversation. Whoever you're a Man United fan or you're not, they have to be in the conversation because it should have factored down how many European cups in one. 31:28Nicky:To be fair, it's a tough place to go and play football at. Realistically, people will think Man United should go there and win. Even when we play, it's a tough place to go and play. I'm not playing that in the stadium. Good as a way. A new place. I'm not. Their fans, they're right up for it when Man United go to town. I just think that it was probably one of them performances where you go, it's typical Man United. We've been saying it, everyone's been saying it all season. They could go and score three or four and they can just let two or three in every single time they play. Led twice as well.

31:56That's the thing. I felt it was a really timid performance. There was no real aggression. I think Everton were there for the take, and especially in the first. I've never seen a game where they just looked like so much space on a football pitch. They never really went for the throat. now look if centre forward is a bit of an issue for him because he's not playing Susco as a I just should say he's got a focal point

32:21Nicky:he's got a play even if he's not up to the standard what Michael wants he's a focal point for the team it's very difficult to watch a Man United team without centre forwards now look Cunha is I don't really know what Cunha is what is he a number 10 or wide play but he's not he's definitely not a number 9 and watching the United team without a number 9 is a struggle I think you also lose a lot of what Cunha is if they play up front then their best performance when they're playing off the sides and come in and attacking when they play up front then they're losing 30 % of their performances but I get the thinking behind Sesco is not quite the player that you want to lead your line to go and challenge you think he'll come good he's a very good player but I think you need more people around you need more centre forwards around him look at all the best teams you know Scaldi's played in 3 or 4 I played in 2 or 3 you don't have one centre forward you have 3 maybe 4 so that lad's they're killing him on his own up there is that what happened with Hoyland yeah exactly the same young lads coming to England carrying a big club on their shoulders you only sent a forward it doesn't happen with the best players Terry Sheringham was what 30 when he comes to United wasn't he played for England superstar he didn't have to carry the team on his shoulders by himself they had four now I'm not saying them days are going to be about I'm not one of these trying to bicker about back in our day but you have to have two maybe at least two or three forwards to go and carry that football club through four competitions why are they not doing that that's a recruitment total recruitment thing that's a different conversation however the one player they've got up front who is a number nine he's got to start him as a focal point he's got to otherwise do they count Mbwemo and Kuno as centre forwards well they will do but they're not no there's no way they're centre forwards and then you go about Rashford Rashford's not centre forward you could play him up there as a nine he could do a job but he's not he's not centre forward he was lively Marcus was lively actually Marcus was really good you see he's running his flicks but the recruitment team more the people the powers that be at Man United and I imagine we'll be saying we've got four centre forwards we've got Sesco Rashford Cunha and Mbwemi now three of them aren't centre forwards so they haven't they've got four attacking players but they've got four centre forwards so it's a bit of a I think Michael feels a little bit like down and transparent yeah he will do we won't never say it and you know I think that's part of the reason Michael's at that football club because he's respectful and he knows his position and he knows he's an up and coming manager and he won't go to war in public I'm pretty sure I'll be saying after it I'll be behind closed doors but he must be let down I think well I don't I don't think it's obvious that defensive they're not good enough they are going to concede goals and I think you mentioned it before recruitment wise it seems like they saw in section by section by section so they did the forwards last year very good they've done the midfield this year we still don't know if that'll work there's players in there potentially could be good and they'll have to go from Chelsea and Santos and obviously Belie but we don't know how good they're going to be if they if them two come together they might help the team defensively but the back four have not been touched and they did not been touched for years and they've not been good enough for years so how you expect that to get better I don't know I'd expect next summer if Michael's well hopefully Michael's still there and they have a decent season I think they'll have a new back four next season well I think Jason they've had a plan over the last couple of transfer or four transfer when they've gone forward it's almost conceding this year that we're not going to challenge the league.

35:39Nicky:But that's the thing, and that's okay, having a plan as a club, but if they're getting beaten and they're slipping down to eighth, ninth, tenth, who's the one that's going to get shifted off? Yeah, Michael. Michael. So he's not been backed. And again, let's not jump the gun here. We're three games in, four games. We don't know who's going to win it. We don't know who's going to come for it. But, as a football Man United fan, you're looking going, we're not quite there. We've got to be a little better. You don't want to be too critical. They are a good back four, don't get me wrong but it's not a back four that's going to do what Manchester United should be doing which is challenging for the league and they've refused to address that this year but everyone will look at the back four and rightly so because Lachie always says we're all concerned about it the four was just as bad of a problem the centre four is as bad a problem as the back four because that line I think they look like scoring goals on it don't they but if you look if you take out no all three of them I wouldn't play any three of them up front I don't consider Rashford a centre forward even though he can probably do it Mbweme Cunha and Sesko if you go against any top team in Europe or the Premier League they're not going to be bothered about that they're not I think they missed Diallo they're not going to go yeah where's he?

36:47Nicky:is he injured? injured yeah off the right but and that's another forward player they're going to say they've got which all fans by the way individually all very very good players I mean the signing of them two last year Cunha and Bweme I think they were brilliant great signings really good players I thought they sorted the forward line out last year but this focal point of a fan of forward which is Man United it's alright City get away with not playing one Arsenal might get away Man United the way they play football you need a focal point and we don't really know about the midfield we've not had a proper test yet it's interesting they conceded against the two promoted sides as well where they were on paper before it started everyone going oh what an easy start to the season I know no games are easy in the Premier League but you'd look at the two teams coming up and you're thinking what do you expect though as you said we've had that back four for five years.

37:37It's never been, it's always going to concede goals at some point, as Nicky said. And in some ways, that is a Man United. Anyway, teams we played in, we conceded a lot of goals, but we always knew at the other end we could score goals. So transfer windows closed, that's done, they've not brought anyone in. What do they do? Well, scores you mentioned before,

37:57Nicky:I think it's a good point as well. He could also put two sitting midfielders in front of the back four, might sure it up. Will that work? I don't know but we're also very young midfield players coming to a big club it's not going to be easy for them the thing is Man United have to be progressive work up the pitch play in their half get a brew on the ball get Cobby on the ball get Tillemans on the ball get these fantastic footballs on the ball you put two defensive midfielders in you're losing that straight away because you're going to commit one of them to come back it's just really it's a really it's a really tough problem to have and again I can hear the comments now we've only three games in I understand that and I'm all for that I hope it gets unbelievably better at the back we know that's going to happen so what Michael's mindset should be now I'd imagine him being is right that's going to happen that's goals it happened with us we conceded 2 or 3 goals and go and score 4 or 5 he's got a goal right the best players are in that half of the pitch not that half of the pitch how do I protect the years while being progressive and going and scoring goals and creating chances that's the big task he's got the task he's got what can he do differently do you know what I mean he's got Masrao he's got he's got stats he can play dog at left back on eight times he's got lenny euro euro who hasn't quite worked for he played a lot of right back in pre-season whether that's an option for him i don't know but whatever he does with them seven or eight defenders it's still it's never going to be enough to challenge for a little five and we know amongst themselves you know when they're in training and what have you all the defenders will they be thinking in the back of their mind well the attackers will be in training won't they i won't mind playing against them you know what like amongst you all as a squad are you kind of like is it like an you know when you i don't know because we've never been there because we always had strength right throughout the team so and you know sometimes as a forward players but especially the center forward when you're looking back and seeing like your team can see and go you're like that okay now i can see that again throwing your arms up and stuff that will be for someone like Bruno Fernandes and people like that they will get pissed off with it of course they will I play in teams that you know you're playing that way and you're not bothered about that way because you know they've got it all sorted out and if they get past the back four they've got a keeper you're not going to get past and I've also played in teams talk about the keeper Nick I'm not sure about the keeper I've also played in teams that you look over and think shit I need to get back in front of these so basically straight away your strength instead of going that way is coming back to cover your back four which is his job don't get me wrong and you get your midfield wide men in and get compact it is very very difficult and I was more of a sitting midfield so Scogli would be better when you're a progressive player going in that half of the pitch a Scogli a Bruno a Tielemans a Cobby whoever you want to talk about you don't want to be worried about what's that behind you there you won't let them defend that's what they're called defenders you defend with your number six we'll go on attack and score goals I don't think Man United players have that mentality at the minute they can't they've got to all get back in did he protect him yeah did you remember Eric Harrison when he that game he did I think the manager was away so his daughter's wedding in South Africa so Eric actually took a first team game and he had a right goer I can't remember would it have been Rio and another summer and a half I can't remember but he said you just want fucking protecting you too and he went and by fuck you need it yeah and that was one game Eric did at Old Trafford I can't remember it was a game was that to Rio and Vidic or something?

41:33no we're Vidic

41:34Nicky:wasn't going to say that Rio might have been in his early days it might have been early days with Rio but I can't think of else Wes maybe? Wes, Ronnie John I don't know Henning maybe I don't know but no where we're at was Man United fans and obviously fans all out there watching it everyone knows they're going to concede goals they're going to win a lot of games of football Man United are still going to win they will be top four I would have thought but don't be expecting a title challenge Michael said we haven't started the season badly would you agree with that? performance wise four points it's badly when you look at what the ambition of the football club always is but if you look at the squad it's expected I mean I was talking what is the ambition of the club that's the thing it's the thing in Europe the emphasis is the thing with what they've done in the window the ambition isn't but at the start of the season I looked at the club and I think we said it on air I said Man United I might come second or third I can't remember what it was we had that debate the reason why I say that is not because Man United are brilliant it's because I don't see any other team apart from Arsenal being great I generally don't now Scholes you might say City City will be good but no one as a Man United fan will go yeah we're going to challenge for the title this year you're not you're just not the squad make up by the way last season when Michael was there I think it was two or three months they were really good and you're thinking right three or four signings we're going to be great this season they've got Tee Lemons in I thought it's a fantastic signing couple of moment fields all very good not getting anybody at the back so are you two saying there's only City as rivals to Arsenal this season no Liverpool no Chelsea I don't know Nicky's saying but that's what I'm saying I still think Chelsea will be there because of the forward line I just think the forward line I think they've got problems like United though they're not great defensively lads speaking of problems let's talk about Tottenham Cosgrove that club at the minute they were looking to get a point on Saturday by the way did you see the goal no I didn't see it but do you know when De Zerbe came in and then you heard about like you know the signings was it 350 million quid they spent in summer genuinely I was looking forward to watching Tottenham this season I thought I know it's a load of new signings it takes time to bed it they're a good team but like you'd think they'd just sort of hit the ground running a little bit or like it's crazy it is crazy when you think of the signs but they will be there they'll be in top 6 no problem at the end of the season I would say just one shot on target versus Forest we said that at the start didn't we they're in a terrible habit of losing games from last year they can't get out of that look it's been 2 years they finished 16th 17th it's going to take a bit of time 10 players probably 10 players is a lot 10 signings but there's some good players in amongst that and I think the manager's good as well I think eventually that might take six, seven, eight games I was going to say how long does it take you know what the big point of it as well is the anxiousness of the fans because it relates onto the pitch that and you can imagine how close we were to getting relegated last year they're in big club they're in massive stadium big attendance they'll all be like the fans we're going to fly this year they get beat they get beat and they're ooh and then straight away you feel it on the pitch now Ozell needs one or two games in a row to win and they'll go like that they will the players they brought in are really really top draw players who would you say is the best signing then are these new lot they've brought in

45:06Tugnalli well there's a few good players and also

45:09Nicky:you remember Savio Madison's come back from injury he's a signing basically it's like a new signing he's taking a bit of time to come back but he will come back and they've got some top top players who really have and I think someone like Madison on the pitch because of how he is his character as well as being a decent player but his character I think that'll help him on the pitch yeah I like him he's a good footballer as well and he makes a team play good football you know what I mean so they need to get him involved so Tottenham is a very negative place at the minute and I've been for two or three years they've got to try and as Nicky said if you get two or three wins put together all of a sudden you're off and running off and running I think it'll be fine

48:41Nicky:hit I think couple of bullet points why I just think he's what's needed in midfield for man United a bit of physicality I think we've got some fantastic midfielders who can play football to the highest level but a little bit of physicality in there is needed and I think he'll bring that I don't think it's a guaranteed hit but I don't think he had a great season unless he had a season before then yeah on that form yeah I think he'll be alright I think he'll be alright 9th Savio Man City to Spurs 75 million quid he has a lot of money for what he's done I think he's a talented lad like are we rating it on the money as well do you know what I mean however you want champs I'll say a hit eventually a hit 8 Bruno Gomeris Gomeris Newcastle to Arsenal always struggle with that 75 million hit i think he'll make them a better team disappointed so he was injured yesterday or something he was so many he came on against villa i thought it made a difference i think he's a very very good player very talented player i would say a hit but the reason why i'm not going to say a hit is because i think the team has to go the team has got to be full cup focal points to be around him i don't think arsenal will do that i think there's other players in that team that can that will be That's a miss.

50:03Nicky:Sorry? That's a miss. Yeah, I think it's a miss, yeah. So, miss. Oh, I don't like saying a miss. I'd rather say all hit and hope I'm wrong. But I just think there's too many players in there that there's more focal points around. Seventh, Ayubouade, Lille to Man City, 81 million. I actually don't think he'll play loads of football. But look, he's 18 years old. He's going to take a bit of time to get into it. he looks like a good player. He's not really my type of midfield player. But he's 18. I'd say hit. There's definitely massive potential there. What do you reckon? I'd have said I'd ignore the price, so I'd say hit.

50:47Okay. Six. Mateus Fernandes, West Ham to Spurs, 85 million. I think I'm going to say miss with this one. Do you know what? I haven't seen an awful lot of him, so I'm guessing a little bit. I don't think I've not seen his name in the first few weeks of the season and I think he did get actually relegated the last two years I'm not saying that's his fault but he was part of Southampton I think he was part of Southampton and West Ham so twice in two years he's been relegated I'm going to say miss on that one I think he's a

51:22Nicky:fantastic player I think he's very talented at West Ham when I watched the game live I thought wow this is a real top top player I just think the club that he's in at the minute it is just not a club that I'd want to go and try and play for at the minute so I'd say miss two misses five Sandro your favourite Tonale Newcastle to Spurs 92.5 million pounds he's had a terrible start in all honesty hasn't he but I think he'll come good hit hit miss oh right I think he's a very first one that no it's because I think he's a very good player I'm not saying he's not good but I just think the set up of that club at Tottenham is going to be and again it's a total different club to Newcastle he was idolised at Newcastle and I mean idolised like he wouldn't be able to go out, go for a drink, go for a coffee or nothing so I just think clubs fit to it and players, I don't think Tottenham fits it.

52:12Right, four Bradley Barcola, PSG to Liverpool £106 million Stop saying the money, it's irrelevant hit he's he even shown it I know it's tips it's your way but the kid that he hadn't kicked a ball since the World Cup whatever it was semi-final or the third fourth place playoff should say against England yeah he looks good signing in it yeah good signing for the

52:41Nicky:top top top Elliot Anderson Forest to City 116 million I had to say the prices it's ridiculous but a hit yeah I think he's a good good player Morgan Rogers Villa to Chelsea Hit Yeah Hit That's 117 million Number one Enzo Fernandes Chelsea to Man City 125 million It's all gone quiet I'm going to say Like I said I think it was the last week I wasn't He's growing on me He's growing I think he's a lot better Now than he was When he first came to Chelsea I think he was good for Chelsea Last year as well And he's gone into A better team To what I'd say Hit I think it'd be hard for him to fail though I'm going to say he's not going to be a hit because I don't think he's a fantastic player I do I just think the players that he's going to go and replace over these years at City like Rodri De Bruyne all these players he's great but he's not in them levels and I think that's why it'll be a miss right remember go to thatprizeguy.co.uk forward slash competitions forward slash good bad football weekender to enter a free GBF winkender, weekender giveaway.

53:59Winkender. Winkender. Give it a wink.

54:06This episode is brought to you by Xclad. Lads, I know we had the big thing about the boiled eggs, but I've got you a little gift here to elevate your cooking game. The old Xclad pans now. Oh, I've got some of these at home, weighty. Beautiful, that, isn't it? Paul, just feel the weight of that.

54:24Nicky:Cook you a duck all around Oh, that's like a NASA pan to me. NASA. Look at the engineering on that, lads. It's got a lovely curve there. Do you know what's brilliant about these and all? Proper non-stick. Non-stick. You can flip a pancake in them, no trouble whatsoever. So they're X-Clad pans. You've got the performance of a stainless steel pan, but with the convenience of a non-stick. What a time to be alive, lads. You get a lovely seer. Seer. Oh, what's that? I'm making the omelette. He flicks it inside and pulls it back like that. That looked uncomfortable, though. Do you use a pan like that?
