1:39Nicky Butt:Good to see you Phil, thanks for joining us. I'm looking forward to it, good to be here. It's, I think, no, Steve Bruce has been on. but that's the only time it's all been three United hasn't it Coley oh Coley's been on
1:52Wes Brown:yeah of course yeah Angry Ginge big United fan he's big
1:56Nicky Butt:he's not the only one take it all back take it all back start again take it all back John United at 12 broke into the first team 97-98 season er when was the first time you two remember seeing Wes
2:14Paddy McGuinness:I heard about Wes before seeing him he's a local lad not far from where I'm from you always hear the next big player that's coming through and so I heard about Wes before I seen him and I'm pretty sure I seen him before this time that I'm going to talk about but the one that sticks in my mind is I remember when you played against Liverpool so we're training at the training ground you walk across and watch the games the young players are still playing because that's what we got me as kids so you feel even if it was pissing down and freezing cold you'd always go and do it because it was the right thing to do and I remember you knew a few of the Liverpool staff and stuff and you're talking you know we've got this player is unbelievable so I was just called it like Michael Michael Owen you're going all right obviously it was unbelievable but then where it's plays plays again so we're going oh we've got a young like I was brownies lab you also him is ridiculous and the two of them went at each other like you wouldn't believe for the whole game and you're looking at and said before I'm not a massive watcher of football even when I was younger I wasn't but I watched that game and you see you saying it in hindsight I know you watched and you'd realize that the two lads that were putting a teacher and battering each other where's it be getting on top of Michael Michael guess well where's I would say Michael was come out on top of the whole the whole game but you look at them both thinking they are gonna both be full internationals in the next three or four years and he was you know how old was you was
3:32Paul Scholes:well the thing is I obviously was with Mo every day yeah I call it yeah we went to Lily show yeah so obviously I training it to every day which was perfect for me because he was brilliant and I definitely would have helped him as well. Yeah,
3:47Wes Brown:absolutely.
3:48Paul Scholes:So that sort of worked out well but at that time when they're saying people are talking about me, I have no clue. I'm oblivious to all that. Yeah, I know what we
3:56Wes Brown:know about that because even the manager tells you sometimes, Come watch this lad, come watch this show. So I was going to say, when you're that
4:03Nicky Butt:age and like you say you were training with Michael Owen and what have you, were you aware of the hype around him? Do you hear about other people but not so much about
4:10Paul Scholes:yourself yeah i was look i mean i went to lily sean i'm sure these two would have went for trials and maybe got in but didn't go um but i ended up i ended up yeah i ended up going which was actually good for me uh so we i placed a place for england under 14s all the way up which is crazy thinking about it but you'd play every weekend against your cities arsenals united liverpools and weird players england um they would always come to us and but the training was was tough you know you were playing with really good good players at the time and any other names in there apart from Michael and there was Michael Ball he was at Everton John Harley Chelsea and Kenny Lunt was crew Stephen Haslam chef Wednesday there's a few more yeah but I think the the aim of the scheme was to try and get all you know you try and get players at 14 develop that develop them and then hopefully they all play for England one day I think they worked out eventually that's
5:06Wes Brown:probably not what was it like them two years was obviously were stories only
5:11Paul Scholes:with second years being a bit yeah it was yeah it was tough yeah it was it was
5:15Wes Brown:too luckily who were the ones above you then they were the ones like Michael branch Luke stay and I don't know if you know Luke and Jody Morris Joe Joe Joe
5:30Paul Scholes:He's Chelsea winning. Yeah, Jordy was top man to be fair. But yeah, you have initiation days. It's horrible, isn't it? Yeah, do you know what? When I look bad, it's not even that bad. No. It's like a tunnel of death. When you're young, yeah. Run through the lads while they're just giving you a dig. Way to take them now, haven't we? Yeah, it wasn't that bad. I've heard it was a lot worse before my time because I know Andy Cole went there as well and he said it was bad in his day. But yeah, I was pretty straight. When the lads, you know, if that bullying side does come, I just didn't let it happen to me if I'm being honest but that's probably where I'm from you don't let people take their mickers as much you let it go as far as you can but it was fine
6:09Nicky Butt:and where were you or what age were you because he says you were 12 when you brought through but who spotted you
6:16Paul Scholes:where were you playing well I used to play I used to Fletcher Moss Rangers I only started playing when I was about 10 I used to play right wing to be fair 10? you only started playing football when you were 10? yeah I used to play on the street honestly for teams didn't you? No, just playing. You did play? I didn't play Fletcher Moss until I was like 10. I didn't play.
6:35Nicky Butt:So you just, like everyone else, were your mates on the street? Why was that then? Don't know.
6:39Paul Scholes:Yeah, I can't remember. No, he wasn't that, couldn't be arsed. It was just, you know, didn't really know how you went about it, I suppose. And my dad probably didn't. But yeah, I was always decent for school. He was probably when I went to secondary school. And then I got Fletcher Moss Rangers, who were a good team at the time, still going well. We used to play against them all the time. Fletcher Moss Rangers, yeah.
7:01Wes Brown:It was a big game.
7:02Paul Scholes:Yeah, a big game. And pretty much started there playing right wing. There's quite a few that came out of Fletcher Moss. Jesse.
7:09Wes Brown:Rashford as well. Yeah, Jesse, Rashford.
7:12Paul Scholes:Even being honest, I wanted to be... At that time, Giggsie was sort of getting in. So you're talking like 90. You knew it was 92. So I wanted to be Giggsie on the right wing. Yeah. If that makes sense, it sounds daft, doesn't it? because if you'd put me right wing now I wouldn't know what to do but
7:32Wes Brown:you ended up at the center half obviously but when he trained he's like a center forward
7:35Paul Scholes:yeah yeah but I didn't in training I didn't used to tackle you know that much I know everyone always used to think I was dead bad in training I didn't because I didn't want to hurt anyone but anyway yeah played right wing he was a kid who got he was in he was ill he played center back and then the manager who's just one of the dads said we play center back and this is not a word of a joke about two months later, Nobby Styles found me, my dad. Wow. Brilliant. So that kid being ill that day,
8:03Nicky Butt:it's like them sliding door moments sometimes. It's not the luck we're talking about before.
8:07Paul Scholes:Yeah, it's true. He was only ill for two weeks, and then I remember trying to put my number seven back on, and the manager's going, oh, where's he at the back? And I was like, what?
8:16Nicky Butt:Is he a postman now?
8:18Paul Scholes:He could have been me. I was a bit devastated, because you want to score and take people on, don't you?
8:24Wes Brown:well nobody wants nobody grows up wants me a defender no no but then I was I
8:29Paul Scholes:actually liked it was at that time was probably quicker than everyone hmm and I could get out of a bit of trouble with his in a simple cry for something you know I mean and I didn't like kicking the ball out of play that was just me so yeah I started to like it and then people started taking interest I think old him actually was the first ones to phone my dad but my dad was like listen he's too far to get that. He's only the start he plays. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Give it a second. We both signed Oldham as well,
8:51Wes Brown:didn't we? Yeah, Oldham. I did more than you, didn't I?
8:54Paddy McGuinness:I was a bit of both, yeah. I would just go to United on a Thursday and then I'd go to Oldham. Do you remember
9:02Wes Brown:going in the office? Did you sign the contract to sign for Oldham or something? Yeah, I signed, so I think I was about 14. What was the contract? So literally,
9:09Paddy McGuinness:I just, yeah, I thought, I was 14. I was 14, so I'm thinking, I'm sick of waiting around for United. They have a lot with me they don't want I was a bit of a just wanted to get things done so I remember signing for Oldham but I signed a four year sorry I signed a two year school buying a two year apprentice and a one year pro at Oldham five years but like an idiot I went I still was going to United training because you got five pound expenses so I weren't giving that up so literally next day kiddo went absolutely nuts you went in
9:37Wes Brown:with your contract as a kid I was signing for Oldham
Read the full transcript
9:39Paddy McGuinness:he's gone
9:40Wes Brown:effing this
9:41Paddy McGuinness:ripped it up because we're still
9:43Wes Brown:under contract at United so I did a school of excellence when you did a
9:47Paddy McGuinness:skills lesson at 13 then it was school boys two years and it was you did they
9:51Nicky Butt:get you at that contract then because you were already in well I want to sign
9:55Paddy McGuinness:with old weren't legal because I was already contracted to United at 13 but I was thinking not with your mum and dad though when you signed it my dad yeah but my dad just wanted me to be happy and yeah that was very much like in my mindset if they don't want you Nick they wanted you there's the sign you by now so we'll go to Alden
10:12Wes Brown:you think how hard that must have been though for a 13, 14 year old kid to go and say tell Brian I've just signed for Alden by the way show him the contract it was different then wasn't it yeah it was totally so different no agents about you just sort of did it on your own you had to do it though I remember being 16
10:24Paddy McGuinness:I remember being 17 right and your dad would say to you my dad would say to me why are you training at first and I said don't know and he'd go go and knock on the mind's door and you go alright knock on the door and you go what do you want and you go just asking them If I'm going to be training him at first, he'll just go, get out. Get out. And he'll go out and his dad will say, what did you say? But it's a good learning curve. Man, you're telling the kids now at 19, 20, they won't go in now.
10:52Nicky Butt:It's funny, you know, seeing youngsters coming through at football, now you were just saying about age, it's like, the age is around them at like 10 years old now, aren't they?
11:00Paddy McGuinness:I think it's because it's the fear of missing out. It is. If you don't get into them young, even though I think it's wrong, they lose them. So unless there's got to be, I think there is some rules to say what to age, they have to get represented that but yeah it's a bit of a major ones I don't
11:14Wes Brown:remember you have an age I had one Paul yes yeah Paul did a lot and then I had
11:18Paul Scholes:one early doors and the manager made me get rid of him yeah I won't say it was but he I was probably 70 so I've just signed my first year pro which is what
11:34Paddy McGuinness:was gas is agent called the first one memories anyway his way of England and he sat down and started trying to talk to us at the supper louse and we went back to mind you went mad have you signed with him i went no i haven't i mean it weren't that i recall no with a big cigar monster monster i remember it'll come to me in a minute but yeah he used to hate the fact of it he hated the fact of losing control of you that's what it was he wanted to control you in the way that he looked after you because he did that but he wanted to control and as soon as he got ages agents involved it was that he was never so if an agent was a little bit pushy or whatever you You just won't have him.
12:06Paul Scholes:No, I signed. He basically said, I don't care. You're getting rid of him. And if he wants to come in... Because back then you weren't allowed to sign until you were 18.
12:13Paddy McGuinness:Now you can sign up, I think it's 14 or 16, I'm not too sure.
12:16Paul Scholes:But yeah, I just had to phone him up and say, sorry, mate, the Gapper won't let me in.
12:20Nicky Butt:Just on that, you just put something in my head. You know the film that's just come out? This Saipan? I don't do films. Is it Saipan? With Roy? Yeah, yeah. Have you seen it? Not yet. So it's about the bust up in Ireland. Yeah, with Roy. Oh, Roy and I. Roy Keane it's all all actors but in it Mick McCarthy's driving Steve Coogan's car he gets a call off Alex Ferguson about saying Roy Keane's not he's not playing
12:48Wes Brown:Mick McCarthy's driving Steve Coogan's car no it's a fucking film Steve Coogan's playing Steve Coogan's
12:58Nicky Butt:playing Mick McCarthy so he's driving he gets a call but this is why are you for a year I'll ask you is he as abrupt as this on the call he goes he picks up he goes who the fuck's this like that and he goes Mick McIver he wouldn't do that and he goes so he puts onto Mick McIver and he goes and he slips like he's not going oh the thing is Alex I don't give two fucks bye bang is he as abrupt as that
13:28Wes Brown:he possibly could be angry but I don't think he'd be angry on a phone call he hated us going away for international duty. He didn't like it, did he? Everything was about his club and making sure he played. Unless you're Scottish, you're all right. Especially if you're going to play for England. Brian McClellan was all right,
13:45Nicky Butt:but the rest of us, fuck you, you know. Now, as we know, every foundation of a great team is defence, and I have signed the yap stamp of the internet to protect me online data. What are you on about? Glad you've asked. Surf shark. it's a VPN that encrypts all of your data online add your IP address so for example when you're booking a flight you're not getting stung because they don't know where you are you can be booking it from anywhere in the world once you've got your VPN on always thinking that'll be useful for your Gaelic football trips Nick so how does that work Paddy? glad you've asked well you sign up for an account then you can use it on unlimited devices one account iPads phones phones, tellies, anything you want, use it on as many things as you like, phones, laptops, tablets, you name it.
14:37Nicky Butt:One account covers the lot. Then all you do is you pick where in the world you want to be from. So you can have any identity. You can go over 100 countries with this. You can go anywhere. See you're abroad for the United game and you still want to hear what Roqueen thinks at full time, you're sorted. Or you might want to tune in to see what Martin Keown has to say after an Arsenal loss. No, I doubt it. I like the sound of that clean web too. Oh yeah, clean web. It automatically blocks ads, pop-ups and malware because those ads on the internet drive me mad. It's like having an extra defender who stops the danger before it even reaches you so you don't have to track back as much.
15:19Nicky Butt:I could have done with that on the pitch. I'm signing up. Well, I'm glad you're signing up because I've got an offer for you and the audience as well. If you go to surfshark.com forward slash GBF or use the code GBF at checkout, you'll get four extra months of Surfshark VPN. Plus, it's completely risk-free with a 30-day money-back guarantee. That's surfshark.com forward slash GBF and code GBF for four extra months. Don't say we don't look after you. just looking here Wes it says Gary Pallister accidentally revealed to you that he was going to make your debut the night before the game oh he did yeah
16:03Paul Scholes:so how did that come about so after training obviously the manager especially the most senior players might say listen I'm not going to play you tomorrow I'm going to play whoever if you're a regular and then you go alright no problem boss but it was the second to last game Arsenal have already won the league so Pallet being Pallet and he was totally honest he said was just so you know you're up you she started tomorrow the gaffers told me I shit myself I was gonna say what was that must have been yeah I'm glad he told me but at the same time I didn't sleep yeah that's like I did it and I'm not a dead dead nervous person but this is the different I didn't see the whole night was absolutely knackered and got to the training my sister dropped me off in a red metro the next day
16:47Wes Brown:whatever the opposite of being nervous is that's what you are that's what we've seen no I know
16:52Paul Scholes:I know but that day was bad and I remember getting there thinking right the gaffer's gonna know he says not slept but anyway we get in a changing room and he fucking says Pally's playing are you joking yeah he absolutely did a little part
17:05Nicky Butt:of your thing oh right
17:06Paul Scholes:I can relax a bit a little bit yeah of course because you know you're nervous regardless on your day who's it against Leeds at home
17:13Nicky Butt:Leeds at home
17:14Paul Scholes:fucking hell
17:15Nicky Butt:what a game
17:15Paul Scholes:to make your debut in as well Leeds but luckily I don't know second half I actually remember the time I think it was 63 minutes but I don't remember a lot in the game but then the gaffer said I think kiddo said it warm up you're going on and then you just forget everything don't you you just hear like and I'm probably in my head knowing me I'm probably going fuck shit shit don't do a bad pass just stupid very simple
17:41Wes Brown:it's funny how you say you don't remember stuff like your debut I remember playing a little bit of Aston Villa. I think it might have been my first Premier League game. I don't know what happened.
17:50Paul Scholes:Yeah, I remember what I was feeling.
17:52Wes Brown:It was just everything around you. Yeah, but I don't know what's going on. Don't know what's going on.
17:55Paul Scholes:You're so quick in it when you go on. Yeah. I just remember getting it past it. But the funniest thing gone, the main thing I remember is, obviously, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbank was playing for them. And there was a couple of times where me and him have had a race. I've got the ball, obviously, done whatever. And then on the second time, he's turned around and gone. fucking hell let's slow down will you all right and all i can't wait to get on to tell me yeah it's weird yeah very bizarre yeah i can't remember who was passing the ball to or anything but little
18:28Wes Brown:things like that so what happened i mean you said pali said that you were playing when the manager
18:33Paddy McGuinness:announced like i look over at palace yeah like probably eating bags of maltese i reckon maybe
18:41Paul Scholes:Maybe because the gaffer for Jimmy Floyd Hasselbeck might have not been playing. Yeah, and it's not fair. Because he's maybe trying to look after me a little bit. Do we need Wes?
18:47Wes Brown:Did we play in that game? Don't know. Can't remember.
18:51Paul Scholes:What score was it? We won 2-1.
18:54Nicky Butt:I don't know. Yeah, we won 2-1, yeah. Is it like that when you make your pro debut? Is it literally as basic? Like, everyone's just going, oh, just make sure my first touch is all right. And you're just thinking, like, really basic stuff like that.
19:05Wes Brown:Don't do anything to shoot me.
19:06Nicky Butt:Don't give the ball away. Yeah. Head it. Yeah.
19:09Paul Scholes:Just know. Get it and pass it. Yeah.
19:10Nicky Butt:it's amazing what goes through professionals in mind you just presume they're just in it and they're up for it and that's what they've done all the career but yeah it's the same things go through everyone's heads don't they says here Patrice Everett and Ashley Young said you were the toughest defender they ever faced in training but you're saying you never went in that on the slide though I could be naughty yeah
19:32Wes Brown:he was a nasty two footed weren't you I don't keep saying but if someone was
19:37Paul Scholes:pissing me off I'd make sure I let them know steady or calm down
19:42Nicky Butt:yeah what was that like if they tried like a trick on you or something no it wasn't even that you could be a little bit
19:48Wes Brown:reckless couldn't you yeah 100 % yeah that's coming from me as well no I can't you can't you can't you're the same no but you are fucking someone I won't do you
19:56Paul Scholes:no but yeah it can be bad but I try and save it for the game yeah Giggs you said you were called the quiet assassin yeah I didn't have it's funny when I look back my mates just say to me where's on the pitch you don't like change your facials or anything doing and I'm like, yeah, but in my head, it's all going on. But yeah, I just used to try and stay calm if people were looking at me.
20:16Nicky Butt:But I could lose the plot. I was going to say, if you went in a little bit too hard on training, was someone like Sir Alex, would he say, well, because obviously you don't want anyone cropped? Yeah, if it was stupid,
20:27Paul Scholes:but like I said, I don't think I was bad in training. Right. There was a few times where I'm like...
20:32Wes Brown:Training did get lively though, didn't it? Yeah, and you have to do it.
20:35Paul Scholes:I mean, you have to do one because Kino absolutely abuser if it didn't tackle properly but I wouldn't go I would say I wouldn't go full force
20:43Nicky Butt:yeah who was the toughest trainer then who used to go in like a Champions League I think everyone did everyone did I remember training sessions
20:53Paddy McGuinness:with my just stopping it stop training getting like you'd be playing a 20 minute game get to like 15 minutes and someone's lost a head got stuck then they've gone back and the mind's just gone right get off can't afford any injuries get off and it was really ruthless
21:07Wes Brown:we never wore shin pads
21:08Paddy McGuinness:no you can't wear shin pads nothing fucking old school
21:11Nicky Butt:but I think that's why you won so much because you train out and the game's easier innit you know what I mean exactly no shin is nothing no fucking hell what are the physio beds like at United you only two you only two on the top Sir Alex won one of all I'm sorry when you want your spring break to feel like and your kids pool day to feel like and your hotel bed to feel like and room service to feel like because at Hilton hospitality feels like your cabana's ready. 23:01Nicky Butt:Now when you're talking about Jimmy Floyd Hasselbank Saying that to you So we hear Sir Alex Ferguson Say Wes Brown was the most Natural defender He's ever seen That's an accurate I've answered this a few times
23:13Paul Scholes:I think people get Mixed up sometimes Because some people Start saying Does that mean you're better Than Rio or Vidic I'm like no he's not saying that What I think he's saying And this is the honest truth So when me and the gaffer Would have our chats And you'd have little individual chat he'd just go let's deal with him today and I know he knows he's not telling me what to do he knows I understand the task and he knows I can do it if that makes sense it doesn't mean anything else more than that really
23:42Nicky Butt:did you when you you'd already said that was that after you finished playing or while you were still playing while I was still playing yeah so does that make you kind of feel a little bit taller on the pitch There was a lot of trust in you, wasn't you, Wes? Yeah, that's what I mean.
23:59Wes Brown:From a young age, so even being 17, 18, 19, if he was playing against the top centre forward and the manager said to look after him, you knew it right. All day.
24:10Nicky Butt:It's interesting because I just presumed, and it rose into his spectacles in pretty much 90s, early noughties, I were probably drunk most at times. But I don't know why I thought you three played together from the get-go. obviously you didn't I know that
24:28Wes Brown:I was getting the bus
24:30Paul Scholes:and Butty was picking me up when I was walking down Salford
24:33Nicky Butt:what just so what you're saying Buzz Sir Alex stopped you getting the buzz as well did you get in a bit of trouble
24:39Paddy McGuinness:no the bus I tell you what's the buzz see you lot on social media try fucking
24:47Nicky Butt:having it in person it's fucking two hours every Monday everyone in Oldham
24:53Wes Brown:says buzz though
24:53Nicky Butt:as well I'll say buzz me kids pull me up on that and I say garage and they go, do you mean garage? No, I got it. They're all very sheshy now. It's Crestbury. I got it.
25:04Paddy McGuinness:I got it. I corrected. Yeah. I'm like, correct me. Yeah, I'm not. You won't speak like that if it weren't for me speaking like this.
25:12Paul Scholes:Well, what happened
25:12Paddy McGuinness:on the, what you say,
25:13Paul Scholes:bus? Yeah. Bus. I think first of all, I think what people don't understand is back then we got, I got the bus everywhere. It wasn't a problem. It wasn't a thing. You didn't get cars picking you up or anything. so from the age of 14 when I was going to Littleton Road or the cliff I'd get the bus get the 192 into town then the M10 the only time I couldn't get the M10 was on a Sunday and I'd have to run did you have a clipper card? yeah I did that too I'd do a job from Piccadilly don't do it
25:47Paul Scholes:so yeah like I said this wasn't on a I wasn't going to training on this occasion but basically I was coming home and I get football but I know absolutely fine with it you know there's a certain degree but then there's people then trying to take their mitt yeah overstep and then you just I don't know so you're obviously
26:08Wes Brown:playing for the first team while you're getting a buzz aren't you
26:09Paul Scholes:yeah
26:10Nicky Butt:that's so random
26:12Wes Brown:when you look at
26:13Nicky Butt:modern football now how much protections around players and they're in a bubble don't speak to a press don't do that
26:19Paul Scholes:well you probably couldn't then but again it was normal did you lamp someone or something like that
26:27Nicky Butt:what is it with UX United it always someone has a story where they've ended up fucking punching someone it first
26:33Paul Scholes:you know the worst thing so as it's happened the bus stopped and I've run just run off thinking right Gaffa won't hear about this will they maybe I don't know Monday morning he didn't laugh he knew all this stuff don't forget Manchester was a lot smaller than what it is now he knew everything so this was probably Saturday and Monday morning, Lynn, and now Lynn only, in my experience, she's only knocking on, one is, you're in trouble or you're getting a new contract, so you're going to be one or the other. Where's the manager's secretary? Right, and I'm thinking, could be, you never know. You could be.
27:08Paul Scholes:You could be. I'm like, well, you could be.
27:10Paddy McGuinness:You could have the best day ever. The worst day ever. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
27:13Paul Scholes:And anyway, when we was walking, so she would never come in, she would just pop her head in, and then, as I was walking up, sort of catched up and said, is it? And she went, no, I went, okay so i knew what he's gonna be and um it was funny obviously i walked in i can tell you this but i walked in and he's he's on me straight away blah blah blah and um he then in the in that like minute he was absolutely destroying me he goes why don't you effing get a taxi okay so i thought this is my only chance i can say something and i went to capco yeah yeah and i went And I went, I can't afford a taxi. Lovely.
27:51Paul Scholes:Love that. Because not enough money. I can tell you, I was on like£250 a week. Always thinking. And it was£7 from my house in Longside to the cliff. How much were we on a week? £250.
28:02Nicky Butt:You couldn't afford a fucking taxi. I were on£17 a shift.
28:05Paul Scholes:I'm giving it to you now. First of all. Oh, right, lovely. So£7 from my house to the cliff,£7. About£14 times seven. We're there every day. Oh, that's fair enough. I have to give my mum some money to feed. I'm left for about 40 the funniest thing I said to him because I don't know why I said I'm buying snide Ralph Lorenzo off my mate I swear to God people used to knock on the door and saw you a bit of so I had all these bloody horse things the wrong way
28:36Paddy McGuinness:I've got to stop you there I remember my dad I said to my dad one sorry what do you want for your beer he said what a Lacoste t-shirt he's gone alright no problem I've got this beer he opened his present I was so excited I thought I'm going to spread it he'd come out he was like Le Shark I was like
28:54Nicky Butt:what's this what's this I'm going to get bullied what's this he went Le Shark was alright
28:58Paddy McGuinness:he went I swear to god he went Le Shark sharks will eat crocodiles you don't eat a crocodile
29:05Nicky Butt:that's a crocodile thing innit you get a fucking guppy t-shirt
29:09Wes Brown:when we got to 17 we were desperate to pass our driving test and get a car why didn't you do that yeah I did it
29:15Paul Scholes:because the car I wanted at the time and before you start thinking about this I wasn't happy getting the bus but I wanted a Subaru impressor proper boy racer but it cost too much obviously I ended up getting one by the way a couple of years later and I couldn't afford the insurance
29:34Nicky Butt:is it the WRX STI is that the one yeah is that sexually transmitted disease I used to have a pink badge on the front of mine which you knew it was chipped up then so it went a little bit
29:44Paddy McGuinness:faster did you get a contract
29:46Paul Scholes:in the end of that chat by the way did you get it so he's all he just remember him looking at me like to say oh god and then he goes right so we're gonna sort that out so that fight never got talked about again and then um what did the last say to you who did the letter you got a fight with i don't even i don't know it is yeah don't know listen it wasn't two big guys anyway probably what did he say to me he started off as United but then he got personal and as I get closer to home I'm like no this can't be happening and I probably just lost the plot a little bit
30:25Nicky Butt:you saying that you couldn't afford it I think to someone like Sir Alex where his upbringing and where he's from he totally got that it's the right thing to do isn't it
30:35Paul Scholes:I don't think he's not thought about me but at the same time I am on the first team now and nothing's really changed in the sense of there's that tricky little spell yeah it is I remember
30:48Paddy McGuinness:we had club cars we had club cars but it was funny because we played as well to first it was like me Scolsey Nev Bex all the same age and we'd all get sat down like this you're getting a new deal you're getting a new deal you never get told how much it was ever and then you get you go in with we'd go in with probably Paul Brooks or something not in the early days it'd be on our own wouldn't we or your dad Brian McClare Brian McClare were coming with us yeah so you're 17 you're looking and you're thinking i would have i would have signed a contract for that for 20 years when it was like oh my god i can go to the shop and get a new shirt every Saturday when you're that age you know that's what you think and you know you just sign it but then you go well you know why aren't you signing it because them three are so basically you go oh right so we had the same contracts all the way through until about 24 25 26 that late yeah well i said what happened when beck started getting the massive massive fame i think he got some sort of a what was that called image rights and stuff that's what make a proper age proper agent yeah we didn't yeah I think we had Paul Brooks yeah guys I was always happy yeah I was always happy with my club car still
31:51Wes Brown:going when you're going through the same no I mean like a club car no no no no we got the same car must have to write our dinghicks we got on the Pro Uds all
32:02Paddy McGuinness:the same color right beautiful letters I literally we had like number back in the day I think you still do now you have even though your squad number was 18 and whatever you had a training number my training number from when we started at 16 his was 53 never forget it 53 mine was 54 and our number plates were M53 somewhere somewhere somewhere oh you must have been thinking
32:26Wes Brown:M53 you used to drive up and down Dean's gate all day M54
32:32Paddy McGuinness:the amount of times you walk up to the wrong car try to get into it because it was like a key you're like the same muscle it looks like I rolled a right lot of idiots it's like ridiculous and Nev Nev went because Nev's like Benjamin Button he's got younger the older he gets we've all got two door sports cars Honda Prellures and Gary got a Burgundy Honda Accord of course he did he took it back and changed it I want a family car he went doing
32:59Nicky Butt:taxi rides at the night time as well that is the least surprising thing I've ever heard you say of course he fucking got a Burgundy Accord
33:08Paddy McGuinness:Bex got his pimped out like he couldn't believe one member. Leather. He had leather. He had leather. He had all shiny wheels. He had it all cruised up. And he was got the normal.
33:16Nicky Butt:When that sort of thing started happening, that time you were all at the club, did you find, could you feel that sort of friction building between Sir Alex and Bex? Because what you were saying about that manager, agents going, we don't want them round. Like that sure bis-side creeping in. Did you feel it? Or was it never? No, I didn't feel it.
33:35Paddy McGuinness:Because to be fair to Bex, he was always a top top trainer running his like to the ground give it his everything so you never really there's obviously tension at certain points when he was photographed in London when he should have been in training the next morning all that kind of stuff which is very well documented but you never you could never question Betts on a training pitch or on a pitch ever never fair enough
33:55Nicky Butt:it was just what you were saying about the tear up on the buzz but then Sir Alex is then saying to you you turn ice on the pitch you're always smiling so like which way does he want it exactly
34:06Paul Scholes:exactly but the other good thing that came out of that is the gaffer then offered me a contract just going back to it and I told Nev and the first thing Nev said you didn't sign that did you and I went no nearly I'm not going to lie it's close because Nev wouldn't help you out wouldn't he Nev was absolutely brilliant absolutely brilliant and then eventually he got Keno to do it for me so Keno did it for me
34:29Paddy McGuinness:really that was always the thing the older probably had Brian McClare doing ours and a kiddo would help out because they did look after you. You never got, as a local lad, you never got that much, but you never got that much. You always knew how level it was. You always got there. You knew people coming in from 13 clubs would be there on the high, but you'd always get your value there. And we had, like Wes was saying about Nevin Keeney doing it, we had Brian McClare, so it was a really good thing.
34:54Nicky Butt:Would you go over and speak to Brian McClare or were they just off themselves? No. I'm going to go in with you. The manager would say,
34:59Paddy McGuinness:Brian will sit down with you and look after you. It was a way of making sure we didn't get agents. because that was starting to come in when we started getting to a level where we were getting I remember my first contract it was 16 to 18 I signed on we signed on our birthdays didn't remember when you're 17th birthday you signed your contract then your first one and I think it was about a thousand pound or something like that I can't really remember
35:20Wes Brown:and then I seem to remember about like 750, 800 quid the first your first pro contract I'm not saying that the first pro would have been the same as well that's 250 or something no no no because it worked
35:28Paddy McGuinness:well yours might have been mine was a lot no I'm joking you were playing before me it was all the same and I reckon but I was going back I don't reckon I had a contract up until I was about 23 that ever lasted longer than 9 months it would always get renewed all the time but remember you'd get to a point it would be in it
35:46Nicky Butt:did that not make you a bit in your own head kind of go I never know
35:50Paddy McGuinness:if I'm going to be here or not no because you always knew so I would sign a contract at 17 we'd sign a 5 year deal within that it would say if you start 25 games that gets ripped up and start again so we got fortunate we started playing quite early so it got to like I don't know halfway through season you'd naturally get a new one a new one a new one then you'd end up getting the one that was like pretty much life-changing yeah so yeah we in that sense we all are good people that looked after our contract when you're saying Roy Keane
36:16Nicky Butt:did you contract did he take a call I eventually got to that with him and he
36:23Paul Scholes:was like no no it's fine yeah he didn't mind doing it at all it took ages though yeah I remember walking past Keane a few times and obviously on occasion be like oh yeah Wes I've got you this much and I was thinking yeah but we're not signing it and then there's a few times I'd be like looking at him and I thought I'm not asking him today it's not the right time it lasted like
36:46Wes Brown:six months I'll tell you a quick story I don't know if I've said it before but my accountant Paul he was asking me I think you need to go in now and try and ask for more money to the manager and I fucking asked how old were you? Might have been mid-20s, you know. It was late. Apparently there'd been some interest from another club, I don't know how true it was or anything, with stupid figures mentioned. So Paul was on to me all the time, go and see him, go and see him. I don't really want to. He said, why don't you just go and speak to Roy first? I saw Roy one morning, and I said, Roy, I'm going to go and ask the manager for more money, what do you think?
37:29Wes Brown:He said, you're not happy with the contract you signed, than them. That was it. Was it? Yeah. Wow. Oh, thanks. What do I do? It was a few days like that. Yeah, that was just right though, wasn't it?
37:41Nicky Butt:You know, when I'm talking to these two over these podcasts, which is really interesting for me, when they, again, my idea of football clubs and football players as a fan, how you imagine the life is, the biggest thing for me was like, not all of you, and not that you didn't like each other, but not all of you were like, mates like constantly you know the other players you don't really speak to outside of training
38:05Paul Scholes:I'm that probably one guy that doesn't affect because I probably get on with everyone weirdly I know you probably don't but I I could phone any I mean I could
38:17Wes Brown:basically
38:18Paul Scholes:I could phone anyone of the anyone that I've played and it'd be absolutely fine you know probably but yeah I mean it happens like that you were like that you were very sensible weren't you yes I was chilled out like I said so that people have asked me it was your main group it was like was a little
38:33Nicky Butt:flash and oh and oh and oh what a guy if we were talking about this where they send the old played computer games on the back of the soul yeah that's all
38:48Wes Brown:yeah we actually wondered why how we got away with it because some of the
38:56Paul Scholes:language is bad as well yeah we are playing a game but the language is bad and we got away of it for a good two three years how did it start then that people have just probably i mean he started off with mario kart i think and then you can play eight on your car so you're there on mario kart and then this game on the bus going to where other manager poor but i don't know yeah a tie well he did tell us to turn around a few times shut this whatever up was right ryan must
39:27Wes Brown:have been there as well at the beginning yeah i think he just stared at the back of the bus i was
39:31Paul Scholes:gonna say right he's not joining this all got him is he do you know one thing it did do it kept us all together and i think that's what the manager liked you know what i mean well it's only how
39:39Paddy McGuinness:things developed so we were on the bus and the manager and the older players were playing cards at the back and there was language coming out of there as well it wasn't it wasn't ideal so They weren't a good group, they weren't coming up together.
39:49Wes Brown:It wasn't like... And you had a go at each other and you took the piss out of each other.
39:53Paul Scholes:Yeah, but it was like, like you said, friendly taking the piss. I mean, there was no actual, I hate him, let's have an argument. It was just banter, basically. But we'd be sitting outside the corridors playing it. Still? Yeah, yeah, yeah. I remember that. Everything, like, it was crazy.
40:10Nicky Butt:They do get addicted, don't they, when you're playing with your mates, especially if you're like... I was a Call of Duty man, you see. I don't think I've ever played a computer game
40:19Paddy McGuinness:I don't think I've ever played a computer game Pac-Man PlayStation or that kind of stuff Stop, hold the press No, I've not
40:27Nicky Butt:Commodore 64 The films thing that's weird and I used to think he's always at the side of me I thought we've got a lot of stuff in common here he's just you've never played a computer game in your life I've got a life I don't want to sit in front of a TV screen for eight hours like that. I do things. Hang on a minute.
40:49Paddy McGuinness:I'm a social person. Hang on a minute. When you were young, you must have fucking been in an arcade. I must have had a game. When Ruben was playing, I don't play. After a bit, I'm like, fuck, you can't play that game. You've ever done FIFA? No, never played FIFA.
40:59Nicky Butt:You've never had an Xbox or a PlayStation yourself?
41:02Paddy McGuinness:Never, no.
41:02Nicky Butt:What about when you were young? Did you have like an Amstrad or a Commodore? No, Atari. Atari. Ruben's had a lot of time.
41:08Paddy McGuinness:I've never played with him. I've never played it with him. doesn't take a floppy ball at all I find that very strange Wes
41:14Wes Brown:I find that very strange you mentioned Ando there where is he what's he doing
41:19Paul Scholes:I think he's still in Brazil yeah he's still in the group obviously we have a group don't we and the group Tex slagging Scolzi off are you not in that one Patrice leading it Patrice and Rio on it I think he's alright but no one's seen him for a bit because he's still in Brazil yeah he's not he's not come this way
41:39Nicky Butt:on the Patrice thing just when you talk about different players and what have you when I've been in and around him I always find him to be like lovely but a little bit eccentric like I was doing some at once and he walked in and he had these like same colour red as that mic thing the sunglasses but up on his head with another per de the ones that flip out like that and he was just like oh he was dead soon but I thought he's like Patrice is a good lad but he's like got that eccentricity about him do you know what I mean what was he like to play with and be around all the time brilliant
42:15Paul Scholes:brilliant he's the same in a changing room he was aggressive aggressive aggressive very confident yeah you know you need them sort of players in the team what year did you leave United then
42:29Paddy McGuinness:2004 2005 one of them can't remember 2004 2005 I think it's yeah 2004
42:36Nicky Butt:a question for you Wes this is again just one of them things when Ronaldo came back to United I remember seeing the first like his first big interview was with you because I was there on the day oh so that just happened by accident
42:49Paul Scholes:honestly yeah and then I said shall I do it to make him feel comfortable he went yeah
42:55Nicky Butt:wow again that was because all eyes were on that that was the big like so were you not a little bit nervous even though you knew him did you not kind of like it's a different thing isn't it interviewing people and doing all that and talking about no
43:08Paul Scholes:again no someone else has asked me that and it's not the first thing I said to him that's it straight away that's all I am though so absolutely no problems same old Ronaldo I think when
43:20Paddy McGuinness:you're in a training room with someone even though you know the level that they're at and you look at the players and you go you kind of pinch yourself a little bit you end up becoming friends with them so you don't see them as superstars that the fans do you just see him as a person who's very very obviously Ronaldo unbelievably good at his job and yeah but every now and again you go I used to do it with Eric as always Cantona walk you come in with presents and you just go Eric's walked in here but most of the lads you're with they're just one of the lads
43:48Nicky Butt:it's funny isn't it because even like me doing this and I'm a fan of football and we have guests on and what have you like I'll say to you two sometimes when you're just like introducing you the five Premier League championships two Champions Leagues and I do go but again because when you're with people you just forget like what they've done and what they were is what you said there so sorry night when
44:10Wes Brown:you said five winning the league five times talking before I'm it should have seven really if the rules are the same now because I think you have a season where he made seven appearances and another one where he made nine you have to have ten I think you have to have ten yeah to get a minute and he's just
44:26Paddy McGuinness:answers your shoulders it's five now oh and if was one of the injuries I died you had a lot of infritable figures you had bad injuries
44:35Paul Scholes:didn't you ACL's both legs ACL's both legs to be fair I look back at it and obviously me and you don't see it as much but I it was hard coming back to play if you're not up to standard and you come back let's be honest your gap is getting rid of it
44:52Paddy McGuinness:with two ACLs you basically missed two seasons haven't you on both seasons the first one took
44:57Paul Scholes:way too long because we there's a well there's a situation with rugby players their legs are so big they don't have to actually have it done yeah like scores you didn't have it done but you can't walk now you can't play paddle so I tried that that is a thing
45:11Wes Brown:American football yeah yeah so I tried that for a bit
45:14Paul Scholes:and honestly so you basically yeah and it was straight line stuff that must have wasted a lot of time at least three months straight line stuff was fine turn good and then it's like right let's start doing a few turns fine when you're not thinking about it then because I think I'm fine and I remember doing it again and I just felt obviously it's gone but I've just the biggest thing
45:34Wes Brown:I'd find with not doing it is kicking a ball you just can't do it the same thing
45:38Paddy McGuinness:when you're injured well to be fair sorry Paddy but that's a big part of the job isn't it kicking the ball I mean like
45:46Wes Brown:properly like smacking a ball when you're injured
45:51Nicky Butt:especially in a team like United that sounds successful are you it's not like you're ostracised but do you feel very much out the group when you're like going yeah there's you're not part of that click anymore there's up and downsides the upside is you're at the best facility the mate you do it every day you know i know math
46:10Paul Scholes:mates who have done cruise shirts they do it for the first two weeks don't as soon as you can walk but it'll never be right so they make you do the downside is it's the same thing every day especially at the beginning um always inside the lads obviously all going out this and you're still getting changed with them yeah but then they go outside and you you're going in the gym doing the same thing it just gets to you done it so it's all about character owner I think
46:34Wes Brown:Wes's character was was unbelievable I don't think he'd never look at him think he's down today he's sulking and he's cheering up do you know what I mean he just wasn't like that would you keep your eye out for things that I especially like for a long time there would be some people who'd be devastated to like open up you would never laugh as well yeah but I wouldn't let you see that anyway so even though you wouldn't know there must have been times obviously where you fucking oh I play with players that have had long
46:58Paddy McGuinness:injuries and what is coming training when the lads aren't there yeah so basically because they can't can't get their band turn and stuff and just so I'm coming at three and I'll be doing it for not do my bit then I just don't want to see no I think something like school you were saying some cat was his car it's a total difference to say I don't know I'm just certain the body who's done it and they can't see everybody happy and getting the boots on and going out because they go further down and down and down now my character and all wessies would be I need to be alongside people to to lift me up and get into the banter and stuff but certain players don't want to be there
47:27Wes Brown:I obviously was as a happy person whatever he's doing I can just even if he's feeling a bit low I can just imagine him laughing his way through it you know what I mean that's the point yeah
47:37Nicky Butt:you are quite chilled like that aren't you it's just like nothing
47:40Paddy McGuinness:just don't bump into on a bus
47:42Nicky Butt:yeah right there's big Champions League week coming up City travelling to the Bernabeu and Liverpool are playing away at Galatasaray now for you lads here firstly what's it like playing in both of those places Galatasaray must be I mean Galatasaray
48:01Paddy McGuinness:is the most intimidating place I've ever played football it is and we went when we was young didn't we
48:08Wes Brown:I don't think I actually I went
48:10Paddy McGuinness:when the police were hitting you with truncheons everything to fight with Eric Cantona Brian Robson all the older players it was and they were in there three hours before when we got to the stadium you get there what two hours before an hour and a half it was full
48:24Nicky Butt:fans
48:24Paddy McGuinness:full all day full all day they're singing songs for six hours before kick off I'm not exaggerating I don't know what it's like now but they did in Turkey in Turkey it was ridiculous did you ever play at Pasiktas yeah
48:35Wes Brown:our old talk will see the ground and like from lunchtime there's people in the ground fucking flurs going off and all that
48:40Paddy McGuinness:you two played in Turkey when we played for England didn't you you played as well it was horrendous remember the fight in the tunnel yeah with the Turkish team well you think you're fighting with the players because it's a little one on one next when you've got a trunche on the back of your head the police are hitting it's absolutely it's one of the most I remember big M Emil nice man on the planet a bit like Wes nice man on the planet very placid very chilled he went and I was like I'm going nowhere near him he cleaned out about four of them one swing one swing right out and put four of them on the floor but yeah Gartassaray is the most intimidating place I've played
49:20Nicky Butt:does it play on your mind
49:21Paddy McGuinness:when you go in there not really no because you know you know what you're going to get you know it's going to be like that just knowing and you're confident with the team mates that you've got around you when you're saying Timberlake
49:31Wes Brown:it's not scary do you know what I mean it's not scary on the pitch but when you're going down
49:35Paddy McGuinness:that old tunnel remember the old tunnel behind the
49:38Wes Brown:it's a different story now they've all got brand new stadiums yeah and the security and all that
49:42Paddy McGuinness:but honestly it was a but the lads can speak for themselves but for me the Bernabeu it's like you're looking up and you just go wow it's an unbelievable stadium that was just history history yeah the first time we went there we got battered as well that was when I talked before about the first league game I'm one of my first league
50:01Wes Brown:and I feel like well I don't don't really know what happened Real Madrid against that it was against the Galactical team as well I don't know what happened oh it was just played one of them too and I'm yeah it was
50:12Nicky Butt:disgusting yeah when you go into a game are you kind of you know you said about that night when you couldn't sleep properly you're like that before maybe that's probably closest
50:22Paul Scholes:you get to it but you're a little bit more experienced but it's just I mean when the game starts first of all if you've got the ball you hear whistles that's all you can hear you can't even hear your team but when they start getting on top it's tough because first of all the players are unbelievable and you're just thinking shit it's just a drag you know what I mean you're not at home and you're not basically bossing the show so you've got to bring out something else in your body which you've played against in that team was it Brazilian Ronaldo no Brazilian Ronaldo and Zidane you played left me I had to mark good luck roll mark to see done see down yeah but he was playing left midfield also you playing right back yeah okay and then now the one who was playing center back and he actually did his thing and I'm in my head Did you cruise you?
51:14Paul Scholes:No, no, no. Do you know what's funny? I put my hands up in my head. He's running at me. And I'm going, that was exactly what he's going to do. Watched him since I was 14. And he's going, and he's going to go that way. He did it. And I've put my leg out. And honestly, it's a pen. But the ref didn't give it. But you can't get the, but you can't, do you know what I mean? Even if you time it right. Even though you know what he's doing, dumb man. Yeah, he pushes it so far to the left. And he's got his other foot there. And I remember after that game thinking,
51:41Wes Brown:him people see is probably the center-half predominant you were when you play like that year when Neb was injured I think you played right yeah like that whole season yeah but
51:51Paul Scholes:you could do that easily yeah it was good I mean did you prefer it I prefer it center-back
51:56Paddy McGuinness:I just feel comfortable I think your style of play like you want to be like mine just says about the natural defender yeah me that means when he goes against someone he's not gonna outrun him they're not gonna out fight him yeah I'm not gonna be out jumping in the Yeah. Oh, defensive duties. I would put the money on. It was a football in the centre-half. Oh, yeah, you could play.
52:13Paul Scholes:That season, when I played right back, honestly, there was no niggles, no anything. I felt fit as hell. Yeah. And it was exactly me and Ronnie had a good combination. You know, everyone used to say he didn't defend. They used to say, mate, he's got two or three on him. I'm having a, this is a great day. People don't get that if you don't play. Do you know what I mean? And you just sort of back him up because you give him, without actually telling him, you sort of give him that freedom a little bit.
52:39Wes Brown:He wasn't helping you was.
52:41Paul Scholes:No, he wasn't helping you. But at the same time, I accept that. And I was like, all right, sometimes it's going to be true. You actually made his goal for the finals, weren't you? Yeah, I did, yeah. A little... A cross. A cross with a left peg, yeah. Left footed cross. Swinger. Every now and again, buddy. Every now and again. Swinger.

54:08Nicky Butt:When you're up against someone like Zidane We know what he's like as a player But I've heard different people Talking about him Saying he can be quite physical as well A bit nasty in the chances I didn't realise
54:20Paul Scholes:Oh yeah he can be Which was fine I mean I didn't even get near him To be able to do that It was funny I remember Because he was playing left midfield Because I played three At times I had to go in And sort of mark him And I remember the manager trying always get tired to him but you couldn't because if i went tight you try and get to the rivero carlos has gone that way and then and then he played over the top and i'm fast so i didn't really get near him being honest so i didn't play bad yeah but at the same time i remember coming off the pitch thinking not really done anything not going to game not tackled anyone pretty much he was bossing the play does that make them games sometimes go like that don't you you know you play
55:01Paddy McGuinness:against people that level you think that game's just gone past and I don't remember doing anything it's just a blur
55:06Nicky Butt:do you have one eye on the clock when you're up against it yeah after two minutes when's this going to end it's interesting because that United team when you were winning everything you go to somewhere like that is it a little bit sometimes a bit like god humbling in a sense where you go fucking hell I think
55:28Paddy McGuinness:even with the best teams I played in so obviously I'd say Wessie's best team would be like 2008 I'd say I don't know what scores he would pick I'd pick the 99 team because that was my strongest squad and squad of players I've ever played with but no matter how good you are and you know how good you are you do you know you're going to win most of the games for some reason back in our day European football was so different to Premier League so you could go and play against Gothenburg away and not touch the ball for 80 minutes it was a total different style of play and we had to evolve that and the manager involved that way of playing but we always found a way of winning and that's what was really stuck in my head about the teams I played with you could go away from home and get a real doing on possession wise so if you look at doing that much stats then but if you look at some of the stats now sorry if you put a stats thing into our games back then you might be 70 % possession to Galatasaray but we'd always end up winning honestly do you ever feel like that with you?
56:23Paddy McGuinness:Yeah it was hard Deputivo Lacroix I can't remember ever touching the ball Valencia Pavel Einmar it's ridiculous all these teams all tall at one point but you still you still go and get the result and it was a weird way of doing it
56:36Wes Brown:I think the level I'm not saying the level is easy now but some of the teams we came up against were like legendary teams yeah Juventus AC Milan I remember AC Milan they were ridiculous the Barcelona team with Pep yeah the Galacticos were 100 it was unbelievable and that was that was the level where you had to judge
56:57Nicky Butt:you realise that Maldini's on there, you're like, what's going on?
57:01Paul Scholes:I would say, do you know with them games, even though we're sort of getting, you can call it battered, or possession, we've not got possession, the main thing was... You can outscore goals. So, you know you're going to get, it's going to be a period of the spell, even if it's five minutes, if we get a chance, we can put that straight back on them, because we know we can score, we're confident, everyone's got the ability to do it, and I think that's a little bit of difference, where teams don't think that, they're just going to get battered but we always thought if we can get a good attack here
57:31Wes Brown:that's why I think Nicky said about the 1990s now look don't get me wrong the 2018's with Cristiano phenomenal different Louis Saha at times was unbelievable but I always look at that team and just think of the goals that were in there oh it's ridiculous if Colin Yorkie weren't happening Teddy and Holly came on David Beckham Ryan Giggs yourself there's so many goal scorers
57:52Paddy McGuinness:in that team but when you knew
57:53Nicky Butt:Brood play
57:55Paul Scholes:when were that? we'd come after It was 2001. Yeah, it came after that, yeah. Early 2000s.
58:01Nicky Butt:When New York, he went... Just the names you just said, then you forget. You go, yeah. It must have been like as a player when you're going, well, just knock it up to one of them. Exactly. And that's that. What we had to do was easy. It's mad. I've got a few quickfire questions for you. Feel free to interject, chaps. Toughest opponent. I've talked about England, yeah.
58:21Wes Brown:Do what? Do a bit about England, aren't I? If you want to, yeah. Do you think of the era, Wes, when you came through? oh it's crazy defenders oh right now so my if you were playing now yeah my my first squad Kevin
58:34Paul Scholes:Keegan is a manager and it was people like out scout Southgate so Campbell so Campbell yeah he owned Rio Terry Terry then he was Woodgate Ledley King you forget all I go he was around here only
58:54Wes Brown:And you actually look now at the centre-halves and it's a real problem. It's crazy. It's the only real problem there isn't it?
59:01Paul Scholes:I loved it. I actually only played, I want to get this right, 23 or 24 times. But I was in the squad, honestly I was in the squad for about 10 to 11 years. I loved it. But then it got to the point where it was Capello and I remember I got picked again. And I was thinking, I'm going to have to tell him it because there's no point me going. Does that make sense? I've done a good spin. What was different with Capello then?
59:23Wes Brown:no nothing
59:24Paul Scholes:but he just kept so I only went to one World Cup yeah pretty much and I was like some young kid will get a benefit out of that I'm not going to get a benefit my knees are struggling a bit that little four or five day sometimes ten day period it's massive for me just to everything's settled down and I remember thinking right I won't phone him because I don't think that's right I'll go and see him and as I'm driving up it comes on the radio Paul Robinson's phone to say he's retired from football
59:57Paul Scholes:he was honestly as i'm driving up i'm thinking oh my god 20 i went in and then boss can have a quick chat and i just said listen i'm i i'm going to retire from from international and he's like and he's trying to talk and he's like no no don't be silly but i said i just feel it's better for me and you can bring some other lads in and anyway good hour chat and he said right no problem i said that's what I want to do. I think it'll help me with my, you know, playing week in, week out as well. And he was fine about it. I was going to say,
1:00:26Nicky Butt:what's he, because he always comes across as quite standoffish, Capello. Like, he seems a bit staunch. Nah. Yeah, he can be.
1:00:33Paul Scholes:Yeah. He can be, but when you're chatting with, I think it's like anyone. Yeah. Like, I get nervous if I see someone famous and if I start talking to him, it's... He's all right, yeah. It's normal, isn't it? Yeah, yeah. Sort of thing.
1:00:44Wes Brown:Sorry,
1:00:45Paul Scholes:we can go on to the
1:00:46Nicky Butt:quick fire questions if you want just the names you reeled off then you're going
1:00:49Wes Brown:I can't believe there was that many I was thinking four or five and then the names the rest of them that's what I was
1:00:54Nicky Butt:going to say so what's happened since that time with football where now them positions you're going we're struggling a bit do you know what I don't know I don't know if Wes agrees
1:01:06Wes Brown:but maybe academy football yeah no one wants to be a defender they're all players now aren't they they're not real centre halves like you said
1:01:13Nicky Butt:they're more players yeah they want like they're thinking more like the glamour kind of positions
1:01:19Paul Scholes:I don't blame them it's just the way they get taught nowadays isn't it everything's on the ball everything's pass out from the back
1:01:25Paddy McGuinness:well again we were watching going off subjects a little bit watching Solfer the Day I don't think anyone can head the ball now and Scaldi said to me they don't think we used to do sessions on heading well look at the set piece
1:01:36Nicky Butt:goals at the minute now in the Premier League and it's like you say because of the defending you've probably gone to
1:01:41Wes Brown:every academy in the world now especially it's all about playing out from the back it's not really about defence it's not really about Wes going smashing somebody it's not really Wes about being brilliant in the air you don't see that and we get young players who come down to League 2 and you see them and they never did a ball and the big lads
1:01:57Paddy McGuinness:are like 6 foot 4 in the air and it's going there and you're like how can you not just get contact we used to do and it sounds crazy I'm not saying it's right because obviously there's a lot of concussion problems the problems with your head and stuff so it's not saying it should be every day but if you're a professional footballer you should be able to head the ball we used to go in the gym the indoor gym with our coaches for 20 minutes and there'd be a ball on the ceiling with a rope and they'd pull it up and you'd learn it out a jump and it was like it's just it's come natural we can all do it it comes natural too because you've done it for the kid but nowadays like getting back to what Wes and Scully said about centre-backs it's not sexy to be a centre-back is it it doesn't feel like it is and you can imagine someone like John Stones
1:02:37Wes Brown:the only way they make it sexy by trying to play well from the back John Stones is brilliant I reckon
1:02:43Paddy McGuinness:when he was younger go he was a midfielder yeah there's no way he started at centre back and he's moved back there
1:02:48Paul Scholes:I remember a few times when me and Gaz were playing and obviously the centre forward had gone Gaz and maybe he was a bit bigger and then I just said to Gaz let me have a go at him and I'd absolutely he wouldn't know it was me maybe until he went what's going on here and I'd absolutely go for him and say don't start that path but Ned used to
1:03:08Paddy McGuinness:do things like that but Ned used to be a midfielder as well I mean we were all kids we were all playing midfielder against each other so he'd be Rochdale boys I'd be Manchester boys never be Berry boys and we'd all be in midfield and I used to hate playing against Gary Neville in midfield I used to hate him he'd be on you he was like he was just dead professional and dead serious and everything but he was a good really good midfield but he ended up going back the way didn't he
1:03:35Nicky Butt:is it one of those things like you were saying about playing out from the back now if you're a kid and you're coming through and you're you were one of those players who is physical and heads it and goes in on the champ. Do you think that's instantly, you won't get on or it's just taken away from you in those academies?
1:03:52Paul Scholes:They want you to be good on the ball, don't they? It's as simple as that, I think. And I think the younger they are, they do get better because naturally that's how they're getting taught now. But back in our day, if we got the ball in a dangerous area, anywhere in the box, and even if they say Scorsi or Butty's coming to me and they've got to be, if I pass that to them the gapper would go mental at me you'd just say get it long because obviously it's an area it's an area of the pitch where you could lose the ball and potentially it's a high risk of them scoring you know what I mean so he would say get it forward and get up and then we'll start from there
1:04:27Wes Brown:there's a big example last week did you watch it you know the Chelsea no yeah when he's trying to play but I think in the Chelsea Arsenal games where they kept passing it back to the goalkeeper and he kept losing our manager
1:04:37Paul Scholes:keep it away
1:04:39Wes Brown:from the keeper Pep did it at times Pep in the Liverpool game when they played Liverpool away I think they kept putting it on the right side centre half and he kept losing the ball and even Pep comes to the side and says yeah which do you know what I mean crazy isn't it
1:04:55Nicky Butt:how it changes in the modern game now but that's the way isn't it right quickfire questions toughest opponent you ever faced Wes R9 I know we talked about it oh yes yeah
1:05:06Paul Scholes:just tell us a little bit I think it's more so when you're playing football it's absolutely fine but then you say I don't know it's our nine like I said it's different so I'm thinking shit so there's not many people you think that about but every player will have someone where they go oh wow yeah yeah and you don't know how he's going to play but you just think shit yeah
1:05:31Nicky Butt:and would it be that kind of thing whenever you went up against him were the periods of the game where he wasn't that involved he wasn't fit
1:05:39Paul Scholes:and he still scored three on one occasion at Old Trafford
1:05:43Wes Brown:I remember when he played for Inter Milan he must have been good he'd not played for Inter he's done his knee and they just wheeled him out there yeah it's bad isn't it so these times you remember that he's like he's limping at times I'm telling you
1:05:56Paul Scholes:but he's just he's very confident and he's obviously got his little silks he's powerful and honestly even though he was a bit bigger at the time he was quick you know what I mean with the ball and he's just like
1:06:08Wes Brown:maybe wasn't fit but walking on the pitch or yeah yeah there's not many people we are sorry there's
1:06:16Paul Scholes:another one which is kind of now when we first got there when we used to be Academy then YTS is we should sit on that red seat in clear so not necessarily these two with these two you could maybe take the pistol at that boy that stupid thing and look away you would as soon as you you would not say a thing
1:06:32Nicky Butt:you wouldn't I don't know why
1:06:36Paul Scholes:but it's that presence and I think that's the same thing what I'm trying to explain with did you
1:06:41Nicky Butt:did any of you with players like R9 did you ever go into a game where you thought I'm getting his shut not really it's funny that with you like no they're swapping shut
1:06:53Paul Scholes:some funny friendly games that have no really it wasn't a thing I didn't really I just thought no not asked so it's really bad because I wish I would have swapped a few shirts now but what didn't do you think about it?
1:07:06Wes Brown:we did swap didn't we but only if they asked us yeah I think yeah I did actually get an Estes Barcelona one nice my treat
1:07:13Nicky Butt:my treat anyone I know you said you didn't swap them but did you ever get any ones? I got Ronaldinho's once yeah nice isn't it what about yourself?
1:07:24Paddy McGuinness:I got a few I got Zidane I got one in Brazil quarter final I can't was it Ravel I can't remember was it is it down it from
1:07:33Nicky Butt:you sure you've all right what a treat but again no I wouldn't know they never
1:07:38Wes Brown:asked I never asked the thing is though we'd probably get bollocks if we did
1:07:41Paul Scholes:yeah the only reason I got it because I played against Ronaldinho for ESFA do you remember ESFA so England under 15s out the old Wembley yeah and he was 13 I was 15 and the manager just said was their number 10 is their best player but he's like a year younger than you but just watch out for him but anyway we won one now that was the first time I've seen him on Odinio Was he doing all the tricks then? Isn't it weird how you grew up with people
1:08:06Paddy McGuinness:I remember when we was unbelievable when we were under 18 and we played against Holland and they had like Seedorf Seedorf Klibert all the same you grew up together you grew up together and even though you're not the same with Del Piero we played against him since he was 18 you just grew up it's really weird yeah you just see him grow up
1:08:24Paul Scholes:and you're like play against you once mate
1:08:28Nicky Butt:You probably have I didn't remember you
1:08:29Paddy McGuinness:I did not remember you
1:08:30Paul Scholes:Ronaldinho
1:08:30Paddy McGuinness:Did you play against Perlow? No
1:08:35Wes Brown:Did you? Not as a kid But obviously You've been as a kid No no In general
1:08:40Nicky Butt:In general yeah
1:08:42Wes Brown:Perlow got G Sun Park Didn't he? Yeah I'm going to say yeah G Sun Park That's a man marking I didn't play against him Didn't give him a kick For two games I was going to say That's not easy G was unbelievable Oh really? Marked him out of the game Marked him out of the game two games mind you
1:08:58Paddy McGuinness:I always said him and Paul Parker were the best man to man players really I remember
1:09:03Wes Brown:Paul Parker the first time Romario
1:09:05Paddy McGuinness:Romario Romario scored after two minutes not remember away from home not done at home though remember he was bad marking he scored after two minutes Romario stopped did a fake backheel Pally and Parks went that way and Romario went that way and scored a goal ridiculous oh yeah ridiculous
1:09:25Nicky Butt:what are you saying about people like Paul Parker I forgot he's another one when you're with him and you're talking just a quiet lovely lad like you know what I mean great lad you don't feel that sort of you just imagine like oh players like are going to be like really aggressive all the time everyone's different after Pets
1:09:45Wes Brown:you see even players we've played against Liverpool lads and Chelsea they fucking hate them you'll see them now you do a bit with them they're all same yeah
1:09:54Nicky Butt:best ever game you played in yourself personally best ever performance where you've come off and gone do you know what that's a bit of me semi-final
1:10:04Paul Scholes:08 at home and scores he scored and I'll tell you why the gaffer asked me to mark Messi that game and if you ever watch the first minute he nearly scores yeah I'm about 10 yards off him and he comes like that and I'm thinking let me time this right and then he just does it quick and then he has a shot and it goes wide but after that I like to play pretty well what was actually like because Messi is one of them people you go up to and you
1:10:31Wes Brown:have no idea what you're gonna do and that's the thing go either way you can go through your legs you know no so what happens is they're the most
1:10:41Paul Scholes:turning games I'm really close to him as well and I'm thinking right the main thing is you always think you can nick it hmm but I realized really quickly you're not nicking it Wes. I don't even remember what was in that game. I thought I could nick it. You think you could nick it down the side? I see that all the time. Is that the one when you go to the camera
1:10:59Paddy McGuinness:and you're messing and you just see your face like that? So I was lucky
1:11:02Paul Scholes:because I clocked that straight away and I'm thinking right I'm not necessarily going to nick it but just send him away. Do you know with some of them players? Do you know what I mean? Do not dive in whatever you do but just send him away and then eventually I could see him getting frustrated because he couldn't chop me because I wasn't diving in. them players
1:11:20Paddy McGuinness:you're better off standing off him because the minute you jump into him they do you I know it's not the same as Messi but he was a fantastic player was King Cladsey remember the mind used to always say to you don't tackle him just stay two yards off him you can't do anything and then as you get older you play against him more you stand off him and he's right he was still a fantastic player but you go and commit yourself to just skip past you the trouble is
1:11:41Wes Brown:if you stand off him he just shoots and scores he's still there he's still there he's still there he's still there
1:11:45Paddy McGuinness:he's still there
1:11:46Paul Scholes:he's playing the defenders then
1:11:47Paddy McGuinness:but not pushing up
1:11:48Paul Scholes:The hardest thing, sorry, he was just as quick with the ball. Yeah, he is. Which is like... He's probably quicker with the ball. Yeah, it's weird.
1:11:57Nicky Butt:I don't understand that. But he was. And was there much... I don't know if he speaks English or not, but was there much... I didn't really do that anyway.
1:12:07Wes Brown:No, I don't think I've ever heard him speak on a football pitch.
1:12:11Paddy McGuinness:No, very chilled, very chilled, yeah. Mate, that good, you can be chilled, can't you? It's easy for you.
1:12:17Nicky Butt:it's funny like because when you say how he is like weirdly again me just watching football it's kind of like he's the same where when he I was the same as Messi no but you know what I mean like when you were saying like I never saw much emotion when you were playing it was you were just kind of playing even when you're scoring worldies and fucking passing it all over the show and running the game you never like looped not that you could be asked it was just like
1:12:46Wes Brown:No, I think he's just taught to be like that. I think, we've said this before, our manager doesn't really like emotional players. Yeah. And I just try not to show emotion, probably. Yeah. I never try and get too high, never try and be too low, always somewhere in between. Worst ever performance,
1:13:04Nicky Butt:where you've gone,
1:13:04Wes Brown:let the ground swallow you.
1:13:07Paul Scholes:Listen, I think when it's not going well, it's tough, isn't it? Yeah, it's horrible. And when I mean, what I mean by that is, a 10-yard pass, and you're like what is going on like it just doesn't work so they tend to be a good few of them and it's just it doesn't matter what you do where you run you think you're going to tackle someone who's gone past you mostly the passing you're just giving it away it touches your first touch bounces off you and then them games last about four hours
1:13:34Paddy McGuinness:and then when you're playing well the game goes in five minutes you get off and you think I don't really remember too much he's in that trouble bad oh it's like honestly
1:13:43Paul Scholes:it would have been a few a couple of penalties the own goals I mean I've looked at some of the own goals some of them you can't do anything anyway I think there was four or five but that's with maybe Sunderland as well I think I got one with them
1:13:59Paddy McGuinness:how did you find it when you moved up there was it because obviously I moved from United when you've been at a club for so long from like 11 like you was and I was to go away from your club where you know you could drive there your eyes closed you've been going there that long you know everybody who works there
1:14:14Paul Scholes:same as you I'd left so I've been United since 12 I left at 33 so to go somewhere I'll make and I'm from Manchester so I didn't really move too far is that Roy in charge then no sprucy all right okay briefly yeah I remember phoning him and then and he picked up for us I boss is where's he's like who the fuck's this and did
1:14:49Paddy McGuinness:you do the full move up there did you move up there full on or you got a flat or what I got a flat yeah it's like I'm changed it for baby
1:14:56Paul Scholes:it's a family girl you know it's a thorough ride up there and all in it it's actually further than I thought, with traffic, M62, wow.
1:15:03Wes Brown:I just saw you played a few games with Blackburn. I would never have known you played Blackburn.
1:15:09Paul Scholes:That was good. So basically I finished, I did five years at Sunderland and then Blackburn, Owen Coyle was there. Owen Coyle. So sort of, it was that period where, I mean, I think you used to both, but you know, you're doing your coaching badges and you're thinking, let's see if I like this or not. I don't know. I actually seen you there once, Scorsi, doing your training. Did you? Yeah. I did it there I don't remember seeing you no you were doing it I thought you waved it
1:15:35Wes Brown:I did my A licence at Blackburn so I was there
1:15:39Paul Scholes:at that time but yeah with the first team I think only played three times but was helping did you play for Tony Marbury then yeah Tony Tony Marbury was the manager when I was there Tony was good yeah obviously wasn't playing at all that much but
1:15:55Nicky Butt:how long was you there for
1:15:56Wes Brown:then because you only played five games so much yeah just a season
1:15:58Nicky Butt:When you're coming to the end of your career and you do a season at Blackburn, because you know it's coming to the end, I think all players know that moment, don't they? Are you thinking, well, I'll just get through the season, are you itching to play every game because you know that's going to be it?
1:16:17Paul Scholes:No, my needs would not be itching to play every game. No, it was different. I mean, at the end of that, I would have been said, yeah. I think, first of all, when players finish, I think you've got to be comfortable knowing. And I was very comfortable. So if that would have stopped there, the lucky thing for me is, it wasn't lucky, but I got a text saying, Wes, do you want to come and play one more season? Rennie Mullinstein in India. Oh, he did that as well, didn't he? Yeah, yeah. And I remember saying to Rennie, I said, Rennie, listen, mate, my knees are not the best, mate. And he's like, Wes, it's 18 games.
1:16:57Paul Scholes:you know it's a different environment what do you reckon he said Berber's coming and Paul with Chubka remember Paul and we had Ian Hume already there good lad didn't he fracture his skull yeah he got I forgot his name who did it
1:17:14Nicky Butt:actually yeah what was that like absolutely brilliant really I absolutely
1:17:20Paul Scholes:was a fit and I remember whereabouts India was you so I was in Corella which is south so for instance at christmas they they still have a break so the mold is just there an hour away yeah it was good that's not a blind burn is it did you play all 18 games or i think i missed two right but but the thing was the last three i couldn't walk mate yeah so mentally you're thinking right you just you just do it and you think right because it's nearly finished now and you're happy with it yeah it's not like you can do any more i should have done anymore yeah um so in that sense it was absolutely fine what was the standard like um so it was okay i mean everyone can play football yeah um facilities for sale ours was good yeah but in general if you go and you talk to other people it's it's not that good obviously cricket's the main yeah the main thing which they play anywhere by the way on the street but then there's also fantastic facilities as well so i mean it was getting better we had a new complex so we was we were pretty good but didn't James manage the team yeah Rennie got fired and then JMO came in it was your team was it yeah but then I found out but then I found out he used to play for them as well right what was he like as a manager JMO JMO was funny I mean I just JMO different character oh absolutely yeah he's funny mate absolutely but obviously I didn't know that's what he was going into anyway so when you hear David James going to be managing like JMO
1:18:54Paddy McGuinness:I did my coaching badges with JMO
1:18:56Paul Scholes:was he good? No
1:18:59Paddy McGuinness:he's funny he's brilliant he was just like just trying to be all intelligent but he was such good them coaching courses they can be a drink out of weeks and on end JMO gets you through it but yeah I mean
1:19:16Paul Scholes:he come I think he did the next few games the next season or whatever but then it must have worked out did you never fancy it yourself do you know what I didn't and it's weird because I do do coaching mainly kids but I found it tough I found it tough it was a there was a few I won't say you but there was a few teams that I've said a few people do you want to come and try this and help me out but I've never did you do your badges yeah well I've done me B and A
1:19:45Wes Brown:did B and A yeah
1:19:47Paul Scholes:but I also thought I did it the cheating way because I did it in Northern Ireland and it's like two weeks. I've not really, even being honest, I've not really gone out and done it. Do you know what? We should never let it happen, should we?
1:19:59Wes Brown:No. The English FA should never let it happen. If you've been playing for England, they should help you get through your banches. Yeah, they should do. You shouldn't have to go to Northern Ireland to do it. Oh, is that the reason? They go to Northern Ireland, they go to Wales. Scotland, Scotland. Why is that? It's a quicker process. I think the English one's seen as much harder to do. Which is the way it should be. It should be straight, you know what I mean? you shouldn't just go to get through it but I've never used them
1:20:22Paul Scholes:no
1:20:23Nicky Butt:do you think like because you're tempered like we were saying there about like everyone's always saying oh he's always chilled he's always relaxed and what have you do you think you'd find it difficult pulling up a player where you have to be you have to be a little bit stern sometimes yeah I understand that
1:20:38Paul Scholes:but if I don't know the person and I've got no problem doing that I think it's with people I know I find that probably hard yeah

Wes Brown joins Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt and Paddy McGuinness on The Good, The Bad & The Football for a brilliant trip through his time at Manchester United.
Wes explains how one teammate being sick unexpectedly changed his career path and saw him move into defence at United, before reliving his early battles with a teenage Michael Owen and the moment Gary Pallister accidentally revealed he’d be making his debut. The lads debate whether Wes really deserved his reputation for being nasty in training and hear the unbelievable story of how a bust-up on a bus led to him being banned from public transport and asking Sir Alex for a pay rise.
There are brilliant insights into contract negotiations at United, with Roy Keane stepping in to negotiate Wes’s deals, while Paul and Nicky recall how Fergie used Gary Neville and David Beckham as benchmarks to keep the dressing room in line. They also remember their first club cars, how Becks pimped his ride and Nev’s classicly sensible choice.
Ahead of a huge week in the UEFA Champions League, the conversation turns to European nights, from the hostility of Galatasaray to the pressure of playing at the Bernabéu Stadium against Real Madrid. Wes relives marking legends like Ronaldo and Zinedine Zidane, facing a teenage Ronaldinho as a schoolboy and later going 1v1 with Lionel Messi. He also opens up about the incredible competition at centre-back for England during his era, why he eventually stepped away from international football, and how the gamers at United — including Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand and Darren Fletcher — helped team morale.
Elsewhere, Wes reveals how he ended up interviewing Cristiano Ronaldo during his return to United in 2021, shares a hilarious first conversation with Steve Bruce after joining Sunderland, and reflects on battling back from two devastating ACL injuries.
