In short
Best-of moments from The Hauraki Big Show (Fri 24 Apr 2026), plus segments on Super Round rugby league prize calls, “What’s on the Telly” (The Mummy’s Boy / Evil Dead Rise comparison), a Foo Fighters album giveaway, and a studio interview with the comedy-horror cast of The Weed Eaters.
Guests (in-studio)
Alice Mae Connolly and Finn Tepett, actors from NZ comedy-horror film The Weed Eaters.
Guest backgrounds
The Weed Eaters is a Kiwi film; they discuss international festival success (South by Southwest Sydney; Jakarta; Girard Mare in France) and a micro-budget crowdfunding of about $19,000.
Key claims
The Weed Eaters involves a strain of weed that makes people crave human flesh; it’s anti-weed in message but uses cannibalism/gore for comedy-horror effect. They say it’s “fully crack up most of the time,” with some walkouts due to grossness.
Notable examples
4D screening at Hollywood Avondale (smells, seat effects implied); “pork” and panna cotta used to mimic human flesh; a “mogi sneeze” petrol-station anecdote; kebab logistics; and a Pearl Jam “Blackbird” TikTok story.

0:09Keyzie:Welcome, this is Big to the Hauraki Big Show.
0:13Jason Hoyte:Really Big.
0:14Keyzie:With Jason Hoyte, Mike Minogue and Keyzie.
0:17Mike Minogue:It certainly is the Hauraki Big Show for Friday the 24th of April 2026. You've got Keyzie, you've got Pug-san and you've got no one else. Muggie's sick and Hauraki J is on holiday.
0:30Jason Hoyte:The Horaki Mini Show. The Horaki Mini Show. The teeny tiny show with me.
0:35Mike Minogue:We're the biggest members of the show, pugs. Crazy. Physically. No matter who is here or what's going on, the big show will always be brought to you by Toledo's. Old brands are done.
0:45Jason Hoyte:Toledo's is taking over. No nasties. No compromises. Get it in you.
0:50Keyzie:Now.
0:56Mike Minogue:Toledo's. That is how you do that. Now, despite being down a couple of members of the old show, we've got a lot going on today. We are going to be chatting to Joey Wheeler shortly, who is down in Christchurch ahead of the first ever New Zealand-based Super Round at the brand-new Christchurch Stadium. Yeah. That is a huge event. We've got more chances to get yourself in the draw for Magic Round. Get ready to call 0800-HAURAKI. We've got a couple of great New Zealanders from a new comedy horror movie named Weed Eaters. They're coming in to have a bit of a chitty chat. Yeah. It's debuting tonight as part of the New Zealand Comedy Festival.
1:28Mike Minogue:and we've got plenty of best bits from the history of the Hauraki Big Show picked by none other than old Pugs-san. We've also got bloody good tunes, don't we, Pugs? What have we got here, man? Yeah, a bit of rage, man. Is this rage, man? Because it's Friday, man. Because it's Friday out.
1:43Jason Hoyte:You've got to go Friday so far, eh?
1:44Mike Minogue:Yeah, I think so. It's about to get a hell of a lot better, man. It's about to be the bomb. The Hauraki Big Show. Weekdays from 4 on Radio Hauraki. A bit of Pluto there on the Hauraki Big Show. It is Friday afternoon with Keezy and old Pugs-san. Hoity J and Mogey are no longer with us until Tuesday next week when the full show's back together. They're not dead, Pugs. Well, I don't know. Jase is getting on. 39? He's 39. They both look terrible, but trust me, they've still got at least another two years left in them. Pugs, I've asked you to curate some delicious best of the big show moments, mate.
2:15Jason Hoyte:What have you got for me? Scrum diddly umptious, if I may say so myself. Now, obviously, I thought I'd take it from this time last year, which was around about Anzac weekend, and we're all planning what we're going to get up to. and you're a pretty practical guy, man. You like to use your holidays a lot of the time as an opportunity to do shit around the house. Do I? But this time you were very adverse. Your wife had actually asked you to do something around the house and you didn't want to. Sounds about right.
2:40Mike Minogue:This long weekend, obviously Anzac weekend's happening, and my wife keeps getting it into her head that we're going to do chores. Sure. Like, oh, this weekend we should do this and do that. Fortunately, last weekend it was really wet in Auckland so we couldn't do any of the chores outside. Yeah. She wants me to paint our fence. It's probably 30 metres long. Right. She wants it stained black. Just wondering, do you guys have any advice on how to get her off my case about it? Because I do not want to paint our fence.
3:06Keyzie:Yeah. No, you go, Mogi. Well, I was going to say, there's a few different things. Obviously, if you can chuck a barrier in between you and the fence, that's the way to go. So I would go tonight. You got any plans tonight, man? No, chill in. Chill in. Yeah. You have to change that. I would say come home and crash through the front fence.
3:27Mike Minogue:Oh, in my car?
3:28Keyzie:Yeah, in your car.
3:29Mike Minogue:Okay. I'm in my truckie today. I don't want to damage it.
3:32Keyzie:Okay. Well, I can't help you. Look, this is a classic scenario. What I would recommend you do, Keezy, is tonight, because you've got nothing on, right, when you go home. Yeah, no, I've got nothing on. When you get home, get massively responsibly steamed so that when you wake up tomorrow, you're so Minogi hungover that you're chundering into a bucket and you can't possibly, you can't possibly do any kind of work.
4:01Mike Minogue:She'll still be like, you can get up and you can do it.
4:04Keyzie:Can I ask you, is she doing it?
4:06Mike Minogue:Yeah. So she's like, we're going to do it. But unfortunately, whenever we do something like that, she is like, oh, I'm really bad at it. And then I'm watching her do it and get really frustrated. I'll just do it. Yeah, yeah. So it'll be me painting the whole thing.
4:18Keyzie:I would just get her to do her half, and you say that you're going to do your half on Saturday or Sunday. Okay. So she can do her half tomorrow. Right, okay. And then you can be hungover all day just watching TV or doom scrolling, and you don't have to watch your bugger it up. Right, okay. Or you could be really hungover tomorrow and just be gaming. Doosh, doosh, doosh. And then not land the plane on the Friday. Yes. Carry on getting responsibly steamed throughout the Friday so that you wake up on the Saturday feeling even worse and you can get back to your gaming. Doo-doo-doo-doo-doo.
4:53Mike Minogue:Okay. Those are all really great suggestions. You can just do it. You know what, Pugs? I don't think Jace has actually ever heard a video game.
5:02Jason Hoyte:Doo-doo-doo-doo. He has, but he's heard the ones when they hadn't invented other sounds for games yet. Like, you know, Pong. Pong from the early 80s. Like, they all had one sound. Like, Tetris was just like, blip, blip. and then Pong's like, doosh, doosh, doosh.
5:17Mike Minogue:Is that really what Pong sounded like? That's my expert gaming opinion. Well, look, the Big Show's going to be back in full this coming Tuesday. Horty J over in Australia. Mogi pretty much dead with the sickness he's got. But we'll have more Best of the Big Show coming up for you after some Oasis. Also up next, Joey Wheeler live from Christchurch ahead of Super Round. How good. The Hauraki Big Show with Jace, Mike and Keezy. Tune in weekdays at 4 on Radio Hauraki.
5:46Keyzie:Welcome back. The Big Show. Magic Round 3. Let's put another mad bastard on the bench.
5:55Mike Minogue:That's right, Magic Round. In exactly one week's time, Pugsan, we'll be calling a winner who'll be telling their mate to pack their bags because they're coming over to Brizzy with us to watch eight games of rugby league. Are you fizzed up?
6:06Jason Hoyte:Mate, somebody's put a foot on the volume knob on my headphones so I've got to touch toes every time I want to turn that up. I am absolutely fizzing, not only because of the rugby league and how much it's started to mean to me over these last three years of me going, but also just the way you get when we're over there, man. You are an animal. Am I? You think Kesey was bad on the Siggies in Dunedin? You should see him when he's out of the country. The further you get away from your beautiful wife, the more Siggies come flying into your mouth.
6:36Mike Minogue:Well, no, what you're doing here, Pugs, is you're building some sort of narrative like I'm hiding my Siggie smoke. And also, can you stop promoting Siggies on the radio, please?
6:42Jason Hoyte:I'm not promoting them and I don't condone them. Good. I'm saying that to a warning for whoever wins this comp.
6:47Mike Minogue:Good. Let's go to the Lions and see who's going to be potentially joining us over there in Brizzy. G'day, Josh, you mad bastard. How's life, mate? Pretty grouse, mate. Pretty grouse. Oh, good on you, Josh, man. What do you do for a crust? I'm a spine surgeon. A spine surgeon? Oh, backbone. Hey, come on, Josh, man. Josh, you're out of control, man. What do you actually do, Josh? I'm a QS.
7:13Jason Hoyte:Quantity survey, if I'm not mistaken, Keezy. Yeah, that's backbone shit too, Josh.
7:17Mike Minogue:You into your rugby league, mate? Yeah, mate, don't miss a game. Every weekend's packed full of it. Yeah, bloody oath, man. It kind of fills up all of my weekends, to be honest. Who would you bring with you, mate, if you won the prize? I have to be the missus. She's into it as much as me. Yeah, well, if the missus is into it, then why shall we deny? I mean, it's still a lucky dip situation, Josh. You hold the line, mate, and you're in the draw, right? Actually, Josh, you don't have to hold the line.
7:44Jason Hoyte:I'll put you in the drawer right now, okay? So you can hang up. All right, you hold the line, Josh. Get out of here. Thanks, mate.
7:50Mike Minogue:G'day, Luke. How's it going? How cheesy. Oh, Luke, man. Where are you calling from? The mighty Hawks day, brother. Oh, beautiful, mate. How's it been there today? Yeah, no, it's a lovely day today, mate. Bloody ripper, mate. You into your rugby league, Luke? Up the way. Yeah. Say no more. Actually, score prediction ahead of tomorrow's game, man, against the Dolphins? 13-plus for the Wards, mate. Yeah, same here, man. That's my gut feel as well. Can't wait to lose a whole lot of money on that bet. Luke, if you were to win this prize, who would you bring with you? It's got to be one of the boys.
8:26Mike Minogue:Just fight to the death, I reckon.
8:27Jason Hoyte:Yeah, fight to the death that way. Nah, I want you to choose one right now. Say a name right now. You don't have to lock it in, but you do have to lock it in.
8:36Mike Minogue:We'll go with my brother, Caleb. Caleb, yeah, good on you. I like Caleb. He's a sicko. I don't know if he can legally actually leave the country. But if he can, Luke, you and Caleb will have a hell of a time, all right? You hold the line, all right? No, you don't have to hold the line. I've got you on lock, brother. You are in there. Good on you, Luke. Hold the line. G'day, Clayton. How's it going, mate? I'm good. How are you? Yeah, bloody ripper, Clayton. Where are you calling from? Calling from beautiful Carpity Coast. Hell yeah, baby. Beautiful part of the world, man. Are we talking Paraparumu or?
Read the full transcript
9:11Mike Minogue:Yeah, exactly. Paraparumu, are you onto it?
9:14Jason Hoyte:Hell yeah, I'm onto it, pugs. You know your wellies, man. I so do.
9:17Mike Minogue:Hey, Clayton, what do you do for a crust, brother? I'm a teacher. Oh, good on you, mate.
9:22Jason Hoyte:Good point.
9:22Mike Minogue:What subject, man? PE. Yes, outdoor education, my favourite subject.
9:28Jason Hoyte:I just immediately went to educators for me just then. The TV show? Yeah, yeah, yeah. The New Zealand TV show. Get around that. The PE teacher's a great example.
9:35Mike Minogue:He is, absolutely. Clayton, you're into your rugby league, I take it? Love the rugby league, mate. Love it. Yeah, nice. And when you're teaching the kids, do you ever get them to just run it straight at you? Not at me. Just at each other. Yeah. Good on you. Build the next breed of footy players. You're in the draw as well, Clayton. All right, you hold the line. No.
9:55Jason Hoyte:You don't have to. You love seeing me run between Studio A and Studio B to do the phones, eh, Keezy? I just love you in general. You're just putting me to work today.
10:02Mike Minogue:I also love Best of the Big Show Moments. It's got another one coming up for you shortly. Also later in the show, your chance to win a copy of the Foo Fighters' brand new album. Yeah. Hold the line, Pugs. The Horaki Big Show with Jace, Mike, and Keezy. Tune in weekdays at four on Radio Horaki. The element of P on the Horaki Big Show. Friday afternoon with Keezy and Pugsana. It's the best of the Big Show moments. What have you got for us, Pugs?
10:26Jason Hoyte:You remember when Jace was into his iced coffee, his nippies? Is he still doing that? No. Yeah, what's that about? You'd think he'd drink it while walking around the big city.
10:33Mike Minogue:Well, what he does is he goes through phases. It was cheese balls. It was Nippy's. It was those steamed puddings from Sara Lee or something like that. That's right. Yeah. It's just a bit of a Nippy's flag.
10:42Jason Hoyte:This is when he was, I was going to say something else, knee deep in the Nippy's Ice Coffee phase. Were you going to say balls? That is disgusting, Pugs. I was driving into work today and I went, oh, jeez.
10:55Keyzie:Did it miss a turn off, did you? Nah. No, no. It was a bit of road work, though, which had me effing and jeffing a bit. Yeah, but anyway. But anyway, that's a side issue. That's a side issue. And I went, oh, jeez, I've got to put some petrol in. So I went to the petrol station. I put my 50 buck in. Just fill it up. No. Why would you just fill your car up? It's not economic. But anyway. But anyway. Anyway, yeah. Can I just say it took them a while to notice me too. I sat there waving, going, here I am, fella, ready to put petrol in there. and... But anyway, so I put my 50 bucks in there and then I went, as I always do when I go to the petrol station, even when I'm not putting petrol, I stop at the petrol station and get myself my little Hoity J treat.
11:41Keyzie:Which has been, it's changed over the years. It's a Nippy's Iced Coffee. Now it becomes good. Now I know why you don't fill it up because it means you can go to the service station more often and be a pig. That makes sense.
11:53Mike Minogue:That makes Hoity J sense. You should put$5 at a time in. Now we can go get a nippies on the way home and on the way to work.
11:59Keyzie:Well, no, I'm so into the ice nippies that I'll stop there just for that. Good. I don't even need to put petrol in. So I took my nippies up to the counter, right? And this is where I found myself on the horns of a dilemma. I put my nippies there, and the guy that was serving me, before he served me, did the most wettest sneeze. It was a mogi sneeze. Real phlegmy. That phlegmy, that's so loud that gives you a heart attack sort of thing. Right into his, he cupped his face with his hands. Really? And did this massive wet phlegmy sneeze into his hands. What did it sound like?
12:39Mike Minogue:Recreate it.
12:42Keyzie:But phlegmy. Phlegmy, yeah. You know, and wetter than that. And I was like, oh, gross. But then, then he started fingering my ice nippies box. you know what I mean? Swiping it. Swiping it on the thing there, going, de-doosh, de-doosh. Well, it's not de-doosh. It was beeping. Yeah, it beeped. And he had his hands all over it, and then he put it back on the counter, and I was like, gross. Did you say that? I didn't say that, but in my head I was going, seriously, and I found myself just unable to move or act or do anything. I was like, oh, what do we do in this situation? And I don't know if that's a callback to the COVID days.
13:21Keyzie:You know, when someone would cough or sneeze, and go, oh, my God! Yeah. And I was like, oh, that's so gross. I don't want to touch that Nippy's now. Yeah. Because it'll all have his germs and flu bugs and filth all over it, right? Yeah.
13:38Mike Minogue:But the Nippy's straw is in a little packet, right?
13:40Keyzie:Yeah, it's in a packet.
13:42Mike Minogue:On the side.
13:42Keyzie:But I still had to finger where his fingers were, you know what I mean? And also you have to put it into that little hole, which he may have touched as well. He may have touched the hole with his fingers. In all honesty, what was your feeling about what, What I would have done and what Kesey would have done. I think you would have gone, I'm just going to grab another one of those, mate. 100%. Correct. It's correct. Ding, ding, ding. And Kesey would have probably been similar. I think he probably, because he hates germs. Okay, don't start a Kesey hates germs thing after this thing.
14:10Mike Minogue:So I would have done the same thing, but I wouldn't have been as direct about it probably. I would have probably just gone, I probably would have just walked over to the fridge and swapped it. Yeah. And then walked out. I wouldn't have gone, I'm just going to get another one, mate. Sort your nose out, by the way.
14:22Keyzie:I wouldn't have been like that either. You've got to make a joke out of it. Sure, sure. But, yeah, you can't touch that. What did Haughty J do? Oh, nothing. He took it and you drank it. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You'd rather die than have a social interaction that was in the slightest bit awkward, even though you're not in the wrong and that person needed to be put straight. Yes, I know. You would rather die. Is that what happened? Hang on.
14:45Mike Minogue:He'd also rather die than not have the nippies as well. Oh, exactly. You know what I mean? He still had the nippies.
14:50Keyzie:But here was my thought process. So I went, oh, no, I've got to take that back and get another one. Right. Then I was like, I'd be really offended by that. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But also I would have then had to finger the nippies that was there to replace it. You know what I mean? No, but what you're saying is you would take it and then take it back to the fridge. Yes. And you don't touch it under any circumstances. Oh, you just leave it there and then go. Leave it there and he can do it. I'm just going, okay. Yeah, right. I'm curious to know how many, you know, on 3483, what other people would do in that scenario.
15:21Mike Minogue:Yeah, feel free to send a texter on 3483. I think, because he still drank it straight away. You drank it, right?
15:26Keyzie:Oh, yeah, I sucked it down.
15:26Mike Minogue:Did you wipe it with your sleeve or anything like that?
15:28Keyzie:No. Yeah, good on that. No, that was the weird thing. Look, I was really genuinely grossed out about it, but I just sucked that bastard down.
15:35Mike Minogue:What would someone have to do to it for you to not drink a Nippy's iced coffee? I don't know. Let's find out, eh? Yeah, let's find out. We'll get a whole lot of Nippy's iced coffees and we'll do stuff to them. Yes, every single show The Big Show has ever done available wherever you get your podcasts from. Give them a look. Up next, what's on telly? An old pug son saw the brand new Mummy movie last night. In the meantime, it is the White Stripes, and you're on Hauraki. The Hauraki Big Show, weekdays from four on Radio Hauraki. You too on the Hauraki Big Show. Friday afternoon, just Keezy and Pugs with you this Friday, ahead of the long weekend.
16:10Mike Minogue:Hoody J's over in Australia there in Melbourne for a wedding. He'll be back on Tuesday. And Mogi is, well, he's... He's on Death's Door. He is on Death's Door. He came in, did the podcast outro with us, and then was like, you know what? If I stay here and do any more content, I'm going to die. Yeah. So you've got Keezy and Pugs, son, and right now it's time for What's on the Telly with Mike Minogue.
16:38Mike Minogue:Yes. Uh-huh. Pugs. Hello. I watched a really interesting program last night, but I'm going to let you go instead because you went and saw the brand new Mummy movie, didn't you? Mummy's boy.
16:49Jason Hoyte:Lee Cronin's The Mummy's Boy Lee Cronin, who is that? Is he a director? He is a director, most notable in my eyes for the latest Evil Dead Rise movie Right Yeah, the latest Evil Dead movie, Evil Dead Rise, which came out in 23 Right And that was absolutely batshit bananas And I really thoroughly enjoyed it When you say that, do you mean it was just super gory and super over the top? Yes, it was absolute chaos, great horror, great gore It's a great family dynamic filmed in New Zealand, which is cool as well. And so this was his next big picture. And also taking on a title like The Mummy. There aren't that many mummy horror movies these days.
17:25Jason Hoyte:I think they've butchered them. There was one a little while ago that everybody hated. And then there's the famous ones from back in the day with Brendan Fraser. And The Rock. And The Rock. Hell yeah. Spot on. Now, in this movie, it's basically about a family whose daughter goes missing while they're living and working in Cairo. Okay. And she goes missing for eight years. and then she is discovered In a pyramid! when a plane crashes carrying a sarcophagus and she's in the sarcophagus. That's right. And they bring her home and she's not really quite the same. She was in a sarcophagus? She's totally malnourished for eight years.
18:02Jason Hoyte:Somehow she's alive and she's just a little bit freaky deaky. There's something going on there. She's got like necrosis and all sorts. Has she been mummified? Well, she was mummified in the sarcophagus. They obviously unmummified her to get her home. Does that make sense? Yeah. The girl who plays Katie absolutely carried this movie. Is Katie the girl? Katie's the girl that goes missing and comes home. And she is just an absolute freakazoid. She's nuts. And there's some real sick shit that happens in this movie and that's what it kind of relies on. The sound design's really good. What I found in this movie, and it's really weird, do you ever watch a movie where the scenes just start to get interesting?
18:43Jason Hoyte:There's like build up, build up, build up. The scenes just start to get interesting and then it cuts away to the next scene. It's like it's impatient with itself and it's sick of its own shit so it just moves on. Right, okay. That's what this movie was like. Everybody else apart from Katie kind of sucked. Right. Particularly the dad, the guy, Jack Rainer's his name, he's in another horror movie, Midsommar. Daddy. He's really good in Midsommar but he was playing a dickhead boyfriend so I'm thinking maybe because he was trying to play a heroic dad in this, it didn't work. Anyway, So far, I'm feeling a 2.8 buzzies.
19:18Mike Minogue:2.8 buzzies out of five, so not even a recommend yet.
19:21Jason Hoyte:Nah.
19:22Mike Minogue:Although, Pugs, I'm sure you won't mind me saying that you were incredibly deftly hungover last night and you regretted the fact that you'd even booked in going to the movies.
19:30Jason Hoyte:What I also noted, you remember, have you watched Breaking Bad? Yes. You know how whenever they're in Albuquerque, New Mexico, they put the Wii filter on everything? Oh, absolutely. Everything's yellow? Well, they move to New Mexico, and what do you think happens? they get the wee filter out. The yellow filter. Yeah, the yellow filter for New Mexico. I just, I don't know. Evil Dead Rise was a way more interesting and exciting movie to watch. If you want a movie that's basically got the same sort of scares, the same sort of gore, the same sort of horror, but done better, watch Evil Dead Rise. There you go.
19:58Mike Minogue:I actually didn't watch anything last night. I had a bath and then went to sleep. Oh. Because I'm rock and roll. Why'd you lie? I don't know. I was trying to show off. Here's Linkin Park. The Hauraki Big Show with Jace, Mike and Keezy. Tune in weekdays at four on Radio Hauraki. It is the Chillies on the Hauraki Big Show. Friday afternoon with old Keezy. And if you were listening to Hauraki earlier today, from three o 'clock, we had an exclusive sort of listening session hosted by Jackass' Johnny Knoxville. That's a name from the past, isn't it? And he sat down with Dave Grohl and the rest of the Foo Fighters and they did an exclusive sort of interview and a chat.
20:37Mike Minogue:They broke down the album song by song. We're going to be replaying that from 6 p.m. this coming Monday. So if you've got the Monday off work, set a reminder and tune into that. But right now we've actually got a copy of the brand new album, Your Favourite Toy 2 giveaway. Let's see who the lucky winner is going to be. Matthew, are you there, mate? Yeah, mate. G'day, mate. How you going? I'm good. How you guys doing? Yeah, not too bad there, Matthew. man, where are you calling from? I'm from Hamilton. Lovely Hamilton. Yeah, beautiful, mate. What have you got planned for the long weekend? Oh, I'll go see my brother.
21:13Mike Minogue:I'll do a bit of yard work. I'm looking forward to sleeping in, actually. It's always nice not waking up to alarm. Hell yeah. What are you doing in the yard, man? Yeah, you know, a bit of weed eating, a bit of tree trimming. Yeah. All the good stuff. Just manicuring, man. The brand new Foo Fighters album, it's called Your Favourite Toy. Do you have a favourite toy? I don't like how this is going, Casey. No, I mean, I didn't even think about it, like a bedroom style toy, man. Yeah. Well, I say on theme, I like my record player, but I need to get the wires fixed on it. So this will be a good reason to it.
21:49Mike Minogue:Right. Well, so you've got a record player, though? I do. I do, yeah. Bloody ripper, mate. Well, you've got to get those wires fixed because you've won that copy of the brand new Philly's album. Whoa, nice. Thank you very much. No worries at all, Matthew. You enjoy your long weekend, all right? Yeah, cheers. You guys too. Bloody Ripper, mate. You hold the line. Old Pugsana will look after you. There you go. Taking care of the listeners here on Radio Hauraki as per another chance to win a copy of that vinyl. No doubt at some stage in the future here on Radio Hauraki. For now, a bit of tool. It's Shism.
22:19Mike Minogue:I mean, it's Friday afternoon on Radio Hauraki. The Hauraki Big Show with Jace, Mike, and Keezy. Tune in weekdays at four on Radio Hauraki. Bush there on the Hauraki Big Show Friday afternoon with Keezy and Pugs and a man who loves a bit of Bush himself, Ol' Pugsan, you've been deep in the Big Show archives, haven't you, man? Keezy! What?
22:39Jason Hoyte:You're goddamn right, brother.
22:40Mike Minogue:I was going to say, I thought I was spot on there. Yeah, hang on. You've been in the Big Show archives, man, a best of moment. What have you got for us?
22:46Jason Hoyte:This one was you thinking you'd done the fellas a favour. They've been away sick, and you've been holding down the fort as it tends to go, much like today. Yeah. And they came back, and you almost, almost got them sick again. I did. You did them a solid, right?
23:02Mike Minogue:At least you thought you did. People listening the last couple of weeks will know that I've been here holding the fort while you guys have been off.
23:10Keyzie:What was that look you just gave me there, Keezy? Just a generic look of love. And by the way, you've got a lot of twisty dust in your moe there. Oh, my mustache. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh, wait, you haven't, actually. I just wanted to make you feel a bit, you know. Actually, your moe's looking really good, by the way, brother. Really? Yeah, wow. Actually, now that you tend to that angle. I mean the snows is still as huge as ever
23:31Mike Minogue:Oh we're getting back into that are we No no no But one thing I actually managed to dodge what I think could have been a complete train wreck for the show Halfway through last week you guys were obviously both extremely sick I was in here at the helm you know running things At the tiller Not at the tiller Firmly gripped on the tiller there I was at the helm and my wife ended up getting struck down with COVID. So we're living in the same house, right? So she's got COVID.
24:03Keyzie:You live in the same house as your wife. How does your fiancé feel about that? I don't have a fiancé.
24:07Mike Minogue:My God, that's pretty intense. I accidentally said I had a fiancé once after I was married. That doesn't mean I have a fiancé.
24:13Keyzie:Was that something you agreed to before you got married, that you were going to live in the same house, or what? How did that happen?
24:19Mike Minogue:So obviously we're living together.
24:20Keyzie:I mean, that's a rookie mistake right there, Keezy. I mean, if you want your marriage to last, you don't live in the same house together. Right. All right?
24:28Mike Minogue:So we're living together anyway. We'll see how it goes. And even though I just said, stuff it. You know, if I'm going to catch it, let's just get it out of the way. I will just sleep in the same bed, you know. You sleep in the same bed as there, Keezy. What the hell is wrong with you? Do you not? No. Right. But somehow I've managed to avoid getting COVID. And I think, even though we've just been carrying on as normal, and I've been testing daily and stuff. I think it's because the last couple of weeks I've started running again. I'm out running. I'm on a healthier diet, a lot of veggies and stuff because I was pretty shocking, a lot of boozing up and that sort of stuff.
25:03Keyzie:Disgraceful, man.
25:04Mike Minogue:Well, I wouldn't say disgraceful. Pig. No, well, see, just a regular bloke diet, you know. And now I've sort of tidied things up a bit and I feel like that has contributed to me not catching it. Today's her last day of ISO.
25:17Keyzie:And the fact that you're 80 % alcohol content in your bloodstream. You know what I mean? That'd be helping. Wow. The thing about Liz, man, she probably hasn't even got COVID. No. Probably depression. Right. Yeah. Well, because you're living in the same house with her. Yeah. With my wife. It's post-wedding blues.
25:34Mike Minogue:Is that a thing? Oh, yeah, totally. Yeah, yeah.
25:36Keyzie:Well, the thing about Liz, man, is you'll find a woman in a horrendous relationship will often let the emotion, the joys of planning a marriage override the realities of the relationship.
25:49Mike Minogue:Right.
25:49Keyzie:And then once the joy of that day has passed, the reality of the relationship comes back to haunt her and she'll sort of plummet into a deep, deep depression that will last often all the way up until the divorce. Yes. Right, okay. What have I done? Yeah. What have I done? Hey, Keezy. What have I done to deserve this? Keezy. What have I? What are you even actually doing in the studio, mate? What do you mean? Because Moggy and I, you know, we've been under the gun here, buddy. That's a pretty selfish thing to do, quite frankly. I mean, the last thing the big show needs is for Mojie and I to get sick again.
26:21Mike Minogue:That's right. Well, that's the last thing we do need because you guys have had like seven weeks off or whatever. Yeah, that's right. I'm testing negative, you know. We're doing all the right things here. I'm fine. I sound great.
26:29Keyzie:Have you been on the website?
26:31Mike Minogue:Yep.
26:32Keyzie:Isolation?
26:33Mike Minogue:Yep.
26:33Keyzie:Household contacts?
26:35Mike Minogue:What?
26:35Keyzie:Yeah, so you're not meant to be here, man. Talk about letting the team down, Keezy. Pack it up, Keezy. Get out. Get out, Keezy. I've been covering your...
26:46Mike Minogue:Isn't that funny? That clip was from exactly three years ago today. And what do you know, Mogi is sick today and also three years ago as well. Jeez, even hearing the word COVID these days sends a shiver up my spine. The Hodaki Big Show will be back in full this coming Tuesday. And don't forget, in the meantime, every podcast of every show we've ever done, available wherever you get your potties from. I recommend iHeartRadio. Now, coming up next on the Big Show, Pugs is going to come in, and we're going to have a chat to a couple of fantastic New Zealand actors. they have a movie which is sort of premiering tonight at the Hollywood and Avondale it is a comedy horror it is part of the New Zealand Comedy Festival and then the movie will be going national it's won all sorts of awards overseas and as we all know when you mix comedy with horror interesting things happen one of my all-time favorites being Shaun of the Dead we'll be having a chat to them up next so make sure you stick around on Hauraki.
27:41Mike Minogue:The Hauraki Big Show weekdays from four on Radio Hauraki. It is the offspring on the Hauraki Big Show. Friday evening with Keezy and Pugs. Old Mogi's temporarily tapped out because he's rooted. There's something wrong with him. He's on all sorts of medication right now and he's having a coffee. He'll be back shortly. But in the meantime, we don't give a shit because we've got Alice and Finn who are in right now from a brand new film that is about to hit New Zealand cinemas. The film is called The Weed Eaters and it is a horror comedy. Alice, Finn, thank you so much for coming to Hauraki. Thanks for having us.
28:12Mike Minogue:Thank you. Now, comedy horror. So the gold standard of comedy horror for me, which leans more comedy, is Shaun of the Dead back in the day. Grew up, watched that movie a thousand times. And a crucial part of comedy horror, I think, is getting the right sort of balance of ha, ha, ha. Correct. Have you guys done that in this, or does it lean one way more than the other? What are we thinking?
28:34Jason Hoyte:It's fully crack up most of the time. And some people scream and a lot of people go, oh, yuck.
28:42Mike Minogue:I did that watching the trailer That was some sick shit
28:46Jason Hoyte:The tone was really quite dark In the trailer I've read the summary, I've looked at the concept But then it was just very Quite serious And very slow and dark And brooding
29:00Mike Minogue:We've had a couple of walkouts Which we're quite proud of That's fantastic, that's the standard for horrors These days With the walkout pugs, how do you know it's because of the horror?
29:11Jason Hoyte:Because they say on Letterboxd reviews afterwards.
29:14Mike Minogue:I walked out because of the horror.
29:16Jason Hoyte:They say I walked out because this was disgusting.
29:18Mike Minogue:There's a couple of moments in particular as well where you tap out. Now, just a bit of a rough synopsis for the listeners right now. What is The Weed Eaters about? It's about a bunch of townies who go away for New Year's Eve to a B &B in the back blocks of a farm in the middle of nowhere in rural Canterbury where they find a strain of weed that gets you so high, you start craving human flesh. Yes, because that's what I saw and also heard. It was quite loud. There's a lot of visceral sound effects and things. Sounders. A wee bit of cannibalism. Oh, yeah. A wee bit. And how sort of realistic did you guys get with that?
29:56Mike Minogue:Did you eat any human flesh? We did. Oh, what? No, you're not really allowed to. It's kind of frowned upon.
30:03Jason Hoyte:We looked into it. It was a bit expensive.
30:05Mike Minogue:We asked the local farmers what the closest meat would be, and they did highly recommend pork. I don't know how they knew, but they said pork. Now, there are scenes where you guys are eating people, I assume, I haven't seen it. But in those scenes, to make it quite visceral and realistic and stuff, you guys have to be chowing down on something. Was it pork? Yeah.
30:25Jason Hoyte:A lot of the time it was pork and some of the time it was like a lovely sort of panna cotta dessert. Really?
30:32Mike Minogue:Yeah, Annabelle, our art director, who also co-wrote the movie as well, was whipped up some really gross but delicious things. To look like human flesh.
30:43Keyzie:Yeah.
30:43Jason Hoyte:Which would have helped with sort of the munchies factor. You know, I mean, personally, I've never even indulged and certainly wouldn't, Mum. But when you're tucking in, in that state, everything just is sort of in a higher state of pleasure, isn't it? So you would have really looked like you were enjoying eating that person or those people. Oh, yeah. So it was really important, I think, for Annabelle to make the food we were eating and pretending was human yummy.
31:08Mike Minogue:Right. Right, okay. Because, yeah, when you're eating human flesh, you want it to look yummy. Pugs, when you said you haven't indulged, were you talking about weed or cannibalism?
31:17Jason Hoyte:That's by the by, Kesey. It's not really important. No, I need to know. Well, we're interviewing these guys.
31:21Mike Minogue:Because if you're on drugs, I don't care about the cannibalism.
31:24Jason Hoyte:It's the drugs part, mate, because this is a drug-free station. Just on that, it's possibly the most anti-weed film concept I've ever heard in my life. Like something that gets you so stoned you start eating people. It was quite good. My mother would probably like it a lot. It's actually the reason why we got a PG-13 rating, I reckon. The teens can come because when we smoke weed, bad things happen.
31:43Mike Minogue:Right, so you had to have that negative sort of association with marijuana. I see. PG-13, but you had walkouts because of grossness. That's interesting. Yeah, it's real fun. Tell you what we might do, guys. We might go to a quick ad break. Not ad break, song. A tune, man. Yeah. Is this Iggy Pop? Even the ads sound good on Hauraki. I always get them mixed up with the music. We'll be back after this with Alice and Finn from The Weed Eaters. The Hauraki Big Show with Jace, Mike and Keezy. Tune in weekdays at 4 on Radio Hauraki. Iggy Pop on The Hauraki Big Show Friday afternoon with Keezy and Pug San.
32:15Mike Minogue:And also joining us in the studio right now are Alice Mae Connolly and Finn Tepett from the movie The Weed Eaters. It's a Kiwi movie. It is a comedy horror. It comes out officially across New Zealand next week on the 30th. However, tonight at the Hollywood in Avondale, there is a special 4D screening of The Weed Eaters. This is to celebrate the New Zealand International Comedy Festival. Now, Alice Finn, got you guys both in studio with us right now. How do you turn a comedy horror into a one-night-only 4D film?
32:44Jason Hoyte:Well, thankfully, we're at the Hollywood Avondale, and they often do 4D screenings. Right.
32:49Mike Minogue:Oh, really?
32:50Jason Hoyte:Yeah.
32:51Mike Minogue:Because I've seen Shrek 4D, and when he sneezed, the seat in front of me squirted me with water. Yep. Can we expect sort of similar-ish things? Yeah, I think there'll be something for all of the senses, or at least most of them. There'll be smells. I was going to say, are you guys going to hotbox the Hollywood? Maybe. Maybe we will. Just fumes of pork and panna cotta. That actually sounds like a delicious meal. The movie is about you guys who you go camping over New Year's, you find an ancient strain of weed that makes you turn into cannibals. Now, as part of this, as I say, you're doing a 4D screening, which is very exciting.
33:30Mike Minogue:It is then going to be rolling out across New Zealand and the world as well from the 30th?
33:36Jason Hoyte:Specifically New Zealand on the 30th and watch the space for the world.
33:39Mike Minogue:Because you guys have already gone overseas, right, and done quite well. You went to Aussie and did well, didn't you?
33:44Jason Hoyte:South by Southwest Sydney.
33:45Mike Minogue:Congrats on that, by the way. We won the best feature there.
33:49Jason Hoyte:Sick.
33:50Mike Minogue:Were you guys over there for that? We didn't go, but Annabelle went. Yeah, we played in Jakarta as well, Indonesia. In Indonesia? Wow. It killed. What?
34:00Jason Hoyte:It killed in there.
34:01Mike Minogue:How good. Yeah. This is the interesting thing, right, especially with Kiwi humour. It's the deadpan, it's the weird accent, and it's been very successful overseas, which is great. So when you do hear that Jakarta, of all places, loved your film, that's weird, right? That's got to be a weird feeling. Yeah, it's great. It travels. Yeah. It was really funny. It was really gross. They loved all the kind of physical comedy as well. Oh, yeah? But yeah, big movie-going country.
34:31Jason Hoyte:And they love horror over there as well, so I think they love the gore too.
34:35Mike Minogue:Indonesians love horror. Yeah. Wow, did not know that. Yeah. Having been to Indonesia once before, I didn't notice anyone sort of, you know, walking around in costume during that. In terms of, you know, taking this thing further afield internationally, has it played out anywhere else around the world yet?
34:50Jason Hoyte:It went to Girard Mare in France and also won a prize. It won the jury prize. Wow. Fantastic. So it's kind of awesome how audiences literally globally are finding our funny little jokes real crack up.
35:02Mike Minogue:Yeah. That's real crack up. How was it funded, by the way? Because I know that you guys had to raise a bit of money. Yep. Was it shot on a budget as well? A very small budget. Yeah.
35:15Jason Hoyte:We crowdfunded about$19 ,000. That is tiny.
35:21Mike Minogue:That is literally the amount you'd pay to get Jason Hoyt, who's usually on the show, on set for one day. Yeah. I think the cutoff for a micro budget is like a million bucks. Right, so you just got in just by a whisker. We're well below a micro budget. Far out. A nano budget movie. But yeah, we shot it over a summer. There were about seven or eight of us all together, but we were living and writing on site and then just started rolling the cameras. Wow. Yeah, it's a great experience.
35:49Jason Hoyte:And then we got an Aussie production company called Causeway Films on board and they helped us with the post-prod. Yeah, they're serious guys.
35:57Mike Minogue:They did like The Babadook and Talk To Me and those big like freaking... Bring Herbags. Those are all...
36:03Jason Hoyte:They're all horrors, right? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
36:06Mike Minogue:Yeah, right, okay. We've got Alice and Fern in studio with the New Zealand film The Weedit is coming out, Comedy Horror.
36:13Jason Hoyte:How much of the concept of this film hinges on the fact that the word cannibal and cannabis sound very similar?
36:19Mike Minogue:It's crazy, right? We've had a lot of people say, surely this should have been called cannibal. Cannabis It just happens to be like that Okay Yeah It's a coincidence
36:31Jason Hoyte:I can assure you though The title of the film does pay off Right Yes Fantastic Oh god I don't even want to know Which would you guys prefer to watch Horror or a comedy Just at home With your partner maybe Or by yourself Well Zoolander is Stoned or not stoned Stoned or not stoned Okay Well not stoned please Alice
36:52Mike Minogue:Because we are against drug use It's an anti-drug movie. Both.
36:56Jason Hoyte:I'll put this back in my pocket then.
36:58Mike Minogue:Yeah, Callum, the director, the kind of origin story for the movie is he kept watching horror movies stoned and then getting so freaked out he'd have to leave. Yeah, right. So he thought he'd make one. So exactly. And maybe it's like that immersion therapy thing where you just put yourself in there and maybe you'll be sweet with it after, like a bath of spiders. There's a group of people here
37:18Jason Hoyte:that I recently talked about in relatively close proximity to you and I that were on a different kind of narcotic over the weekend and decided to watch the remake of Evil Dead.
37:29Mike Minogue:Have you guys seen that? I hope they went on drugs. What's that? Who? Tell me who it is now. I'm going to get them fired. I'll let you know if you're a kesey. Okay, because your name's going to be in there if you don't. Thank you so much, Alice and Finn, for joining us in studio. Don't forget tonight, 8 p.m., the International Comedy. It's comedyfestival.co.nz if you want to go to that 4D screening tonight. Otherwise, it will be out from the 30th onwards across New Zealand. It is called The Weed Eaters. It is a horror comedy. Thank you so much for coming in. Thanks for having us. No worries. The Hauraki Big Show with Jace, Mike and Keezy.
38:04Mike Minogue:Tune in weekdays at four on Radio Hauraki. It is the Hauraki Big Show right for Friday the 24th of April. However, Jace is in Australia at a wedding and old mogi is almost dead with some sickness as per you. So you got the two healthy members of the big show, Keezy and old Pugsan. And the two of us are brought to you by delicious Toledo's.
38:23Jason Hoyte:Out with the old, in with the future. Toledo's electrolytes. Clean, cutting-edge hydration. You best be getting it, innit ya? Nice, Pugs.
38:35Jason Hoyte:Toledo! Toledo! Oh, my God. Come on, man.
38:37Mike Minogue:Part of me then was, like, waiting for the audio to play that automatically says Toledo's. And then at the last minute, I remembered that we actually say it every time. We do, yeah, yeah. It's live, man. This is live radio. It certainly is. Pugs, I've got a dilemma. Go on. Doing some Googling, man, because I'm going to drive home to Tauranga after this. It's like, oh, three hours from Auckland? Yeah. And decided I feel like eating a kebab. Yum. So I'm going to get a kebab, but the only kebab shop on the way to my place is half an hour away from the final destination. Do I eat a kebab in the kebab shop at like 10 p.m.?
39:08Mike Minogue:Do I pick it up and take it home and then eat it half an hour later? Or do I eat it like in the car while driving?
39:16Jason Hoyte:You're telling me there's no kebab shops? No. on your route. That's the closest one to my house. Oh, so you want it to be close to your house? Yeah. Oh, I thought you meant like once for the road almost. No, no, no.
39:28Mike Minogue:So do you eat it in the store weirdly at like 10 o 'clock by yourself? Yeah. Eat it while driving? Kebab, a lot of admin? Yeah, and possible spillage.
39:36Jason Hoyte:Or wait half an hour? You know what you do? What? You buy the kebab half an hour out. Right. And then you buy some chips for the road. Right, okay. Then you eat the chips on the road. Yeah.
39:46Mike Minogue:And then by the time you get to the place, you're full from the chips. Well, you're not full from the chips. Then you throw the kebab and you feed it to the dog. Because you're so full. Because I'm so full. From the chips. Pugs, you are a genius. I get it, man. He's used his genius for good. Coming up next, more best of The Big Show. This is Radiohead on Hodaki. The Hodaki Big Show. Weekdays from four on Radio Hodaki. Highly suspect there on The Hodaki Big Show. Friday evening with Keezy and Pugsan. And Pugs, man, you've been elbow deep. in the Big Show archive. You've got another best of the Big Show moment for us, man.
40:20Jason Hoyte:What's this? If you're elbow deep, your legs aren't in, obviously. No, no. It's because you're reaching into something.
40:26Mike Minogue:So you're standing behind and you're reaching in with your arm and your elbow, right up to your elbow. So your body's outside. Okay. Are you picturing you're inside and only your elbow and your hand are out?
40:38Jason Hoyte:No, I'm picturing being knee deep in something and then bending over so my elbows are also deep. Yeah, that's another way to be elbow deep. That's where I'm at with the big show archive. That's the kind of stuff you can expect. Now, this is a very, very exciting announcement from Jase about one of his daughters in her musical career pursuit. Jeez, how much do you love that Pearl Jam song, though?
40:58Keyzie:Oh, yeah, 10 out of 10. It is an absolute belter. It's a doozy. I wonder if it would go good live. I feel like it would. Looking forward to, I'm going to see that one live. Yeah. Yeah. Wow. What? Funnily enough, fellas, check this out. On Saturday I went to a gig. One of my daughters was making her debut on stage. Now I just want to make the clarification here. It wasn't her band. She was asked to join the band and play in the band. Oh, wow, that's cool. Yes.
41:27Mike Minogue:What instrument?
41:28Keyzie:Guitar. Cool. Oh, electric guitar and acoustic guitar. She was acoustic but, you know, plugged in. Oh, electric guitar. Yeah, yeah. So went along to that and it was quite genuinely I was blown away. That was great. Loved it. Loved it. But anyway. You haven't got great taste of music, though. Having said that, having said that, the next day I was talking to Eddie. Funnily enough, we were just talking about Rearview Mirror there. Oh, Eddie Vedder. Yeah, Eddie Vedder and just catching up. We probably once or twice a month just see how each other is travelling and all that. So it's good to check in on your mates, Keezy.
42:04Keyzie:Totally. I didn't know you were mates with them. Oh, yeah, massively. We've been mates since we were about 16, I think. Right. And anyway, he's like, how are you, man? What's been going on and blah, blah, blah. And I was like, oh, funnily enough, Ed, I went and saw my daughter playing a band yesterday and he was like, oh, oh, really? What's the name of the band? And I went, blah, blah, blah. And he went, oh, okay, that's cool. Have you got any recordings? And I said, yeah, man, I really like them. I'll fire them through to you. So I did and we carried on chatting and we're going to meet up when they're over here and stuff.
42:39Keyzie:But anyway, next minute, fellas. That's a cool reference. I get a call from Pearl Jam's manager. Oh, yeah?
42:48Mike Minogue:What's that person's name?
42:49Keyzie:Andy. And he goes, we've just heard the band I've just played. And this is my band. Oh, the demo, the recordings. Yeah, that my daughter was in. Just heard that. Absolutely fantastic. I played it to the fellas in the band. They are loving it. And we're wanting to know if you've got contacts, because we'd love them to be our support act when we're doing the Tour of New Zealand. Wow. He must have had contacts with your daughter. No, he wanted me to make contact between them. Wow, opening for Pearl Jam. That's huge. Yeah, opening for Pearl Jam. God, congratulations. Well, it's so funny because then I ring my daughter and she's like, oh, I'm not really into them.
43:24Keyzie:But yeah, no, it's probably an opportunity. You must be a proud father. Yeah, I'm stoked, mate. That's pretty cool. I am a huge Pearl Jam fan. Yeah.
43:32Mike Minogue:Well, it's kind of nepotism, though, because you know Eddie, you know.
43:36Keyzie:Well, it's funny you bring this up because I wasn't going to say anything, but it's just too much of a coincidence. My daughter recently has been getting into the Beyonce album. Oh, the new country one. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's good. So she's loving it. But the song that she really likes, it's the one that she's really, first time she loves music, but this one she's really into. She wants it played on repeat. Her cover of Blackbird by the Beatles. Right. Which is a beautiful little ballad. Just a little bit of guitar on there and that's it. Anyway, she's only four and a half. So I taught her how to play it and put it up on my TikTok account there.
44:12Keyzie:Well, we wake up the next day, 900 million views. 900 million? 900 million views. Wow, yeah. And next, by about lunchtime, I get this phone call. Oh, Nick Minute. And I don't recognise the number, but it's from America. And I'm thinking, oh, what's this all about? Scam. So I answer it. It's Andy, the manager of Pearl Jam. Oh, the. He said to me, that performance is unbelievable. I said, yeah, I know. And he said, what we would love is if you could have your daughter come and close the show out, close the night out, and sing Blackbird at the end. I said, are you telling me that Pearl Jam is going to open for my daughter?
44:58Keyzie:He said, yes.
44:59Mike Minogue:Wow.
45:00Keyzie:So Pearl Jam is going to be opening for my daughter's first concert.
45:03Mike Minogue:That's the most impressive thing I've ever heard. Can I just clarify something?
45:07Keyzie:I mean, you kind of already knew Eddie and everything, so that's sort of not as impressive. But still good.
45:11Mike Minogue:Your daughter being on the bill is still pretty cool, though. I just want to. Yeah, it's OK. She's not headlining.
45:15Keyzie:Hang on, but listen, I just want to address something that Kesey said there about nepotism. And interestingly, when they were talking about the support band via Mogey, Eddie said, look, fellas, Hoere J's my best mate. I think I should stand down from this, and it should be a decision that you should make. Oh, right. Because we are best mates and I don't want to dirty the waters. I'm surprised there's that much thought going into it considering it's just the opener.
45:46Mike Minogue:Yeah, sure. No one's even going to be there for that anyway. Yeah, yeah.
45:50Keyzie:So, yeah, funny, isn't it?
45:52Mike Minogue:Yeah. That is so cool, Moggy. Because how old is your daughter? She's still young, right? Four and a half. Closing for Pearl Jam.
46:01Keyzie:Wow. That's crazy. Well, Pearl Jam's opening for her. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Far out.
46:06Mike Minogue:So they've changed all the marketing on the show and all that? Far out.
46:10Keyzie:All good, mate.
46:12Mike Minogue:Actually, if anyone listening actually saw Mogi Minogi, Mogi's daughter, closing for Pearl Jam and has a review, send it on through on 3483. We'd love to hear. We never sort of heard how that went, Pugs. Absolutely.
46:24Jason Hoyte:And obviously$50 Toledo's cash. That's just real cash brought to you by Toledo's. Up for grabs. Yeah. Everybody who texts in, in the draw. Pugs. Yeah.
46:32Mike Minogue:You're the man. The Hauraki Big Show with Jace, Mike, and Keezy. Tune in weekdays at 4 on Radio Hauraki. It is Silverchair tomorrow on the Hauraki Big Show. Friday night with Keezy and Pugsan, and this is your last chance to jump into the Betcher Backbone Pot that we are currently running. If you would like to punt on this weekend's Warriors game and put some cash in and have a bit of a chitty chat with me and the rest of the degenerates in there, then head to the Betcher app, go to BetSocial, and then join the pot using the invite code BACKBONE. I'll see you there. Let's get rich. We're not going to get rich.
47:08Mike Minogue:Currently$1 ,500 in the hole. But Pugsan, you recently went to Vietnam. Am I right?
47:13Jason Hoyte:Yeah, and just on that, Chris, I actually went to Vietnam. I don't know if I told you. Oh, did you? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Vent.
47:22Jason Hoyte:Best trip of my life, did I tell you?
47:24Mike Minogue:Yes, I'm actually really pleased to hear that.
47:26Jason Hoyte:Yeah, it genuinely was an absolute ripper. but I did have one absolute shocker on the, actually, the second to last night and then into the final day.
47:35Mike Minogue:Right, okay.
47:35Jason Hoyte:So we were in Hanoi, right? And I...
47:44Jason Hoyte:Sorry, do you want... No, you're good. Should I just play it? Continue. You want to play this out? On the second to last night, I decided to take my partner out for a bit of a date, just us two, and the other couple went out on a separate date, just as a nice little couple time before we went home. It turned into an absolute chaotic. Really? Shambles? In the best way. Okay. So we went up for a date at a record bar. Then we met up with the...
48:11Jason Hoyte:Please go on. Went to the vegetarian restaurant and then caught up with the couple later. Then later we ended up in a techno club where you couldn't find it except for finding a dude outside a garage door who then said, are you here for the... And then he'd open the garage door and you go in and you go up the stairs and then there's like a massive rave away house. Right. Ended up in there very late night. Next day, like yesterday on The Big Show, if you listened to The Big Show, you would have heard I was not in my best, you know, my most steady mindset. I was hungover, didn't have much brain power.
48:38Jason Hoyte:We went to Train Street. Are you familiar with Train Street in Hanoi? That's the street with the train where everyone has to move all their tables and shit because the train goes past. That's right. We went there first thing in the morning and we were heading into our last sort of day, couple of days before we got on the plane. And as we got there, you know, there's people trying to usher you into their cafes because they want you to spend your money there. And we were just like, oh my gosh, just please, just first one. We'll just go to the first one. It doesn't matter. We don't care. We sit down.
49:03Jason Hoyte:And as we sit down, this fellow comes up to me with a tray that he hangs from around his neck, a massive tray of lighters. And he had a big selection of lighters. And he's like, oh, do you want a lighter or something? Because he saw that we had... Durries. One of the people in my party had some durries. And he was like, oh, do you want a lighter or whatever? And at this point, I don't know why, I hadn't even had any interest in buying a lighter. I think I was just hung over and looking to spend money. Right. And I was like, okay, yeah, what have we got? What are we looking at here? Usually I would not have gone for it.
49:33Jason Hoyte:Should have just ordered the food and left him. Anyway, he shows me this lighter and it's got Ho Chi Minh on it. Very famous, very, very important person in Vietnam's history. Yes. And it was a lighter, it was a gold lighter that had a red Vietnamese flag and a picture of Ho Chi Minh on it. I was like, that's kind of kitschy, that's kind of cute. I'll grab that guy. And I was like, oh, how much is this? And he goes, for you, 550 ,000 dong. How much is that in New Zealand? 550 ,000 dong is, I'm putting it in my calculator here,$35. Right, okay. For this lighter. And I'm like, oh, there's no way.
50:08Jason Hoyte:And, you know, like, I'm down for a bit of a haggle. And so I said, look, why don't you do? And I just said, I sit around my group. I was like, what should I offer? What should I offer? And then my mate just goes, oh,$280, which is$18. Yeah, fair enough. So that's pretty good. I bought the lighter off him Yeah For$280 ,000 And I was immediately like Why did I do that Why did I just buy a lighter A novelty lighter Yeah For$18 New Zealand dollars Right I tried to get as much use out of it as I could But the whole time I kind of felt like I'd spent too much money on that lighter I could have haggled a bit more Flicking it, whatever Spending it as much as I could You know, just lighting it around people And then I meet up with a friend That I met on the Ha-Jung loop a little bit later She had got a lighter from the same place How much do you think she spent on her lighter?
50:54Jason Hoyte:$17. $50 ,000 Vietnamese dong. Which is what? $3. Pugs. And then. What? Then it stopped working. You're joking. The night that I bought it. Yeah. And then I got it taken off me in Shanghai airport.
51:07Mike Minogue:Oh, wow. $18 down the drain, man. Yeah. How good's Vietnam, though? The Hauraki Big Show. Weekdays from four on Radio Hauraki. Jane's Addiction on the Hauraki Big Show. Been caught stealing. and a man who's also been caught stealing. Old Pugson. Stealing your heart. Yeah, am I right? Yeah, and other stuff from work, mate. We know about it. Yeah, sorry, it's the station. The headphones. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Bringing back the headphones. Yeah, and all the free piss. No, that's all G. Responsibly. Yeah, nice. The reason Pugs is here and not Hoity J and Mogi is that Mogi's almost dead from some sickness he's got.
51:39Mike Minogue:Right. And Hoity J is over in Australia at a wedding. They'll be back on Tuesday. The big show will be back in full. In the meantime, you have been in the archives, Pugs. What do you got for us?
51:47Jason Hoyte:Speaking of Piskisi, Mike Minogue's lovely wife actually went out for a social occasion and came back. And, you know, it's one of those things where you get enough wines in you and the truth starts to come out.
52:00Keyzie:My wife went out for a wrap party. A wrap party? A wrap party. You remember wrap parties, Jase. Those who work in a film, they know about those. And it was for the movie Minecraft.
52:13Mike Minogue:So that's when the movie's done, everyone's finished. That's a wrap. Let's have a party Yeah I like it
52:18Keyzie:So she did that And she went out And look we've been slogging lately And she's more than earned a night out But when she's out I always I'm a little bit concerned Because you know It's my wife I mean I'm not concerned to the point Where I put a tracking device on her Like Keezy But I don't I'm not able to sleep until she's home Do you know what I mean? Yes I do That's just the way I am And just quickly
52:41Mike Minogue:I don't put a tracking device On Mogi's wife That's just weird Anyone that thinks that is out of line.
52:48Keyzie:Anyway, she got home and she came in and I'm lying in bed there. I turn on the lamp. Yes. You're good, babe. You're good. Where the hell have you been? Anyway, she sort of makes her way over to the bed there and she goes to give me a kiss. Hello. And she plonks it. Big kiss. Right in the center of my honker.
53:09Mike Minogue:Oh, wow. Yeah. She wouldn't have had to bend down very far for that, which is handy.
53:15Keyzie:Well that's my point Kesey So I guess my question is Had she had a few drinks And her aim was off Or Have I got a big nose? I To be honest with you mate I've never really noticed Not that I've ever It's never sort of caught my eye Or anything like that You know what I mean?
53:40Mike Minogue:If it did though Nah
53:41Keyzie:Because I know we josh around on the show. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So I thought we were just joshing. Yeah, we were just joshing. Why? Certainly with you we were, not with Keezy. No, that's right, because it's sort of like, it's sort of good if all three of us have got a big honker, but it's only you two, really. So... Oh. Oh, okay. Okay. We're going down that route, are we?
54:08Mike Minogue:Fellas, I think, look, looking around, Let's just say it's not out of place. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's nothing to be alarmed by.
54:14Keyzie:Well, that's right. I think in this room it's probably normal. Wow. Smaller than normal. Yeah, yeah, yeah. What, your honker? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Well, we know who's got the biggest honker.
54:26Mike Minogue:Sorry, is this about Jase having the biggest honker or are you being self-conscious about your honker?
54:29Keyzie:No, it's me self-conscious about mine.
54:30Mike Minogue:Okay.
54:31Keyzie:Jase is trying to make out now that I've got a bigger one than him. Oh. And I do, but not nose.
54:35Mike Minogue:Yeah, okay.
54:37Keyzie:So I just want to get this right. So you're in bed. Thank you. Your wife comes home from the... The wrap party. The wrap party. She opens the bedroom door and kisses you on the nose. No, she had to walk across the room first. No, apparently she didn't have to. Yeah, apparently you were saying that she just stood at the doorway and went right in the middle of your massive snores.
54:58Mike Minogue:I don't think it's anything to be self-conscious about.
55:00Keyzie:No, certainly not, man. Because you're a confident guy. Yeah, you're a very confident guy.
55:04Mike Minogue:The last thing you want is that weighing on your mind and the front of your head, you know what I mean? Yeah, exactly. so I think just push it out of your mind yeah there's nothing to worry about yeah thank you yeah
55:16Keyzie:thought so cheers
55:19Mike Minogue:we can make you feel better man no worries man I'm not sure that's what happened
55:22Keyzie:oh
55:24Mike Minogue:yes Moggy's nose this massive honk is probably filled to the brim with snot as we speak hopefully hopefully be back on Tuesday the big show back in full in the meantime every show we've ever done available wherever you get your podcasts from The Hauraki Big Show. Weekdays from four on Radio Hauraki.
55:48Mike Minogue:That is the big show done and dusted for Friday the 24th of April. A big week, Pugsan. Yeah. You know, having a Wednesday live show in Dunedin, in hindsight, is kind of a huge call. It's a crazy hump day. Yeah, because it's great, and then the next day you're terrible, and then usually we do them on like a Friday or a Thursday night and then you'll be into the weekend, but we're not. We're back here. As a result, Mogi's sick. Hoity J's away. Yeah. It's been a long week. It is, but I've had fun. That's good, man. That's all that counts. Yeah. You going down to Hawke's Bay tonight? Drive safe, mate.
56:20Jason Hoyte:Hey, thank you. All right. Will do. I'll probably stop off and get some car on the way. My dad lives down there now, so I'll be catching up with my partner's family and also going to see the old man, which will be cool. Sweet. Yeah.
56:30Mike Minogue:I'm going to go visit my brother in Todunga. My parents are currently away on holiday. So we're going to go down to their place while they're away on holiday. Party up. Because they've got a spa pool. Oh, yeah. They've got all the set-up, you know. That's hot. And me and him are just going to play golf and watch rugby league and just have a bit of a boys' weekend, you know. Yeah, the boys, man. The fellas. I'm excited for you. Can't bloody wait. The Big Show will be back this coming Tuesday. Have a fantastic long weekend from myself and old Pugson over there and the other two fellas. We'll see you later.
56:59Mike Minogue:See ya.
