In short

The hosts discuss “alien profiling” (why pop culture aliens look the same) alongside radio banter and giveaways. They also joke about borrowing a water blaster to fix a deck, then shift to spring/daylight-savings age jokes and finally alien design clichés.

Guest backgrounds

No external guests appear; only the regular hosts are mentioned: Jace, Mike, and Keyzie (Keezy/Keyzie). “Pugs” is referenced as a team member for the deck-fixing competition, not as an interview guest.

Key claims

Aliens are depicted with massive heads/weird bodies because no one has actually seen aliens, so creators default to a familiar template. Jace notes the “Alien” franchise aliens look identical across films.

Notable examples

“Alien vs Predator,” “The Simpsons” aliens (tentacles/one eye), and the “Roswell/Area 51” stereotypical green humanoid with big black eyes.

0:00Mike Minogue:The Hauraki Big Show with Jace, Mike and Keyzie. Tune in weekdays at 4 on Radio Hauraki.

0:07Keyzie:Nirvana there on the Radio Hauraki Big Show this Monday afternoon. The time is 5.38 and fellas and particularly Keyzie, I've got a favour to ask.

0:18Mike Minogue:Right. Well when you say fellas and particularly me, do you just mean me?

0:22Keyzie:Yeah, I mean you specifically because I remember you talking about this the other day. I believe you have a water blaster.

0:26Mike Minogue:Oh yeah, I've got a water blaster, yeah. I was using it today. Got on top of the roof there. We're just cleaning off. Careful. Oh, yeah, totally. Totally. You have the scaffolding and everything, and you've got your harness in there? Yeah, I have my harness on, like you told me. Because you've got to be aligned with the work-safe practices, man. You can't just get up there willy-nilly. Totally, man. I would never get up there willy-nilly.

0:51Keyzie:Especially if you get a big gust under the snows there, and you're...

0:55Mike Minogue:What was the favour you wanted, man?

0:58Keyzie:Now, listen, my wife and I, jeez, we worked our asses off over the weekend because we have a big back deck, fellas. Wouldn't know. A massive back deck. Wouldn't know, man. But it was a bit overgrown. Oh, was it? And she's a bit run down. How many years had you left it, do you reckon? 20. Wow.

1:18Mike Minogue:Do you ever use it?

1:19Keyzie:Well, this is the weird thing. My wife and I were talking about it over the weekend. I was like, why did we never really use this deck? because it's a lovely little, oh, it's a lovely big deck, you know, and it's surrounded by lovely plants and bush. Weeds. And mostly weeds, but your pungas, that sort of thing. You know, we cleaned it all out and now it needs a good water blast and I reckon we give it a good water blast and she'll be tickety-boo, replace a few rotten planks and that sort of thing. Bob's your uncle. Squirt a bit of paint on it. Bob's your uncle.

1:51Mike Minogue:I'm not coming around your house and replacing planks of wood, if that's what you're asking.

1:56Keyzie:Well, I mean, if you could, that'd be great, but I wasn't going to ask you. I was just going to ask if I could borrow your water blaster. You can borrow his water blaster. Yeah, thanks, man. Of course you can. Well, no, mate. We're mates. Of course you can borrow it. Exactly. I didn't feel like I did. I felt like I should ask anyway. No, say no more. Keezy will bring it in tomorrow. Actually, in fact, it's probably easier if it would make more sense if he just dropped it off at your house rather than bring it all the way in here for you to then grab it and take it all the way back. He can drop it off.

2:21Actually, that'd be really good. No trouble. Because we're Westies, eh, Keezy?

2:25Keyzie:What are mates for? Yeah, totally. Is how I would put it. I might, you know, buy a box of beersies or something. No need, man. Honestly, don't worry about it. True. Keezy won't accept anything for it, man. It's mates. Well, no, it will. Yeah, that's what friends do.

2:40Mike Minogue:Right, okay, well, look. To be honest, I was going to say no, but, Mogi, you've got a real good point there. It sounds like it's all pretty much signed, sealed, delivered anyway. Yeah, cool. Thanks, mate. That's the one. You can borrow it, all right? but I'm just really fussy about things. I'm very particular about things. And there are a few rules that come with it.

3:00Keyzie:Of course. Are they written by you or your wife?

3:02Mike Minogue:Well, you didn't write them down. That would just be weird. It's just the rules that you should just have committed to your memory whilst you're using it.

3:08Keyzie:Can you imagine what Keezy's garage looks like? It'll be everything painted in there and all the little labels and little Tupperware containers. I'll just remind you that you're looking for him to do you a favour. Yeah. Oh, yeah, that's right. You're a backbone, Keezy. Thanks, mate.

3:23Mike Minogue:Okay, first rule, I mean, it goes without saying. You've got to keep it in a locked garage, man, or inside your house. Is that all good? Behind a lock.

3:30Keyzie:Well, I've got a little deck out the back. It'll be fine out there. It's got a roof over. It won't get wet.

3:34Mike Minogue:No, a deck with a roof over is not behind a locked door, Jase. Behind a locked door, please. Is it in plain view from the street? Yes. I've got a garden shed. Has it got a lock on it? No. Or you have to bring it inside, put it in the lounge or something. Well, what about if it's got one of those sliding bolts on it? It doesn't have a door on it. What happened to the door? I don't know. Did it get stolen? It fell off. I'm not putting my water blaster in a shed if someone already stole the door.

4:06Keyzie:Well, it's around the back. No one goes there.

4:08Mike Minogue:Second thing, you can only use it in 30-second bursts because I don't like the motor to get tired. Yeah. So you just squirt it for 30 seconds, set a timer, and then hit reset on the timer. and then stop, and then when it goes off again for 30 seconds, then you can start again. It sounds annoying, but trust me, not that bad. And it means that it won't get worn out. You know what I mean?

4:31Keyzie:Okay. You going to do that? That sounds massively ball-achy, but fine. All right, fine. Well, then don't use it. It's fine. No, that's fine if I have to do that. Just say yes, man. Yeah, yes.

4:42Mike Minogue:I'm going to say yes. You have to towel down the machine after use.

4:49Keyzie:Okay.

4:51Mike Minogue:All right, fine. You can borrow it.

4:53Keyzie:Thanks, mate. When are you going to drop it off?

4:56Mike Minogue:Tonight, man. No worries. Yeah, after work. Yeah, after work. You can pick it up and then go around. You're a backbone, Keezy. After work. Yeah, man, after work. The Hauraki Big Show. Weekdays from four on Radio Hauraki.

5:08Keyzie:Stone Temple Pilots here on the Radio Hauraki Big Show this Tuesday afternoon. The time, 4.36.

5:13Mike Minogue:Don't forget if you want to join us at the Dunedin Beer Festival happening the 7th and 8th of November at Forsyth Bar Stadium. to head to hodaki.co.nz, enter the competition there and name the beer we are brewing in collaboration with Emerson's. It is a hazy pale ale. It'll be an official Big Show beer, but it needs a name. So head to hodaki.co.nz, enter the competition, name our beer, and if you win, you'll get free flights and accommodation and tickets to the beer festival, which once again is happening down in Dunedin, 7th and 8th of November.

5:44Keyzie:How good would that be? I've always sort of fantasised about having a bear named after me. Yeah, right. Or a name that I've come up with. You know what I mean, fellas? What about Hoity Fizz? Oh, hey. Hey. There you go. Actually, that's brilliant.

5:59Mike Minogue:Enter the comp, Moggy. Hodaaki.co.nz.

6:01Keyzie:Now, listen, fellas, speaking of great ideas, we gave away our trip to Fiji yesterday, and there's been a bit of a sort of hole in our scheduling now for a new competition. and I came up with the idea of Fix Jace's Deck 2025 project.

6:17Mike Minogue:Yeah, which basically is, and feel free to give us your thoughts and feelings on this amazing giveaway on 3483. Basically, you want six winners to come round and fix your deck.

6:28Keyzie:Backbones. And the exciting thing about it is we do it in one weekend. So it's not sort of drawn out. It's just bang, we get it done. It's like, oh, you know, everyone chipping in, The whole Big Show team will be there. Pugs will be making tofu skewers. All hands on deck. All hands on deck. Hey. Hey. See, now this works for that pirate team, the whole horeki thing. Yeah, yeah. Horeki hardcore. That's brilliant, Keezy. Thanks, fellas. That's really good. And then at the end of it, when it's all done and dusted, sparkling and brand new, we have a big deck party on Horey J's new deck. I'll pump out the tunes.

7:08Keyzie:Right. A few beersies. Keezy can bring some salads. Why do I make Selvin? Mogey can bring some meats. Pugs said I can borrow his barbecue when we have a party.

7:17Mike Minogue:It sounds really great, Jase. Lots of great texts coming in on 3483 as well. That's a hard pass on that comp for me, thanks. Yeah. Well, it's not going to be for everyone. It's not for everyone. You don't want any old deadbeat coming around that doesn't know how to swing a hammer.

7:31Keyzie:Thank you, Mogey. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I want backbones that know how to handle their tools.

7:36Mike Minogue:What about this one here? Hey, can I enter this comp? That's good. So someone's showing interest there. Yeah, yeah, yeah, good. Will your missus be there, Jase? Yes. Oh, yes. I'll come round and fix her sink if you want. Don't know, have you got a faulty sink? What's going on? I thought you just got it installed.

Read the full transcript

7:58Keyzie:No, the sinks are all good, I think. Oh, okay. But, I mean, I can look at my sinks.

8:02Mike Minogue:I'll fix your deck, hoity jizzmeister, as long as I can stay the night.

8:06Keyzie:Oh, yeah, well, we could set up a little camp, A little camp out in my backyard there.

8:10Mike Minogue:Why a camp? Well, you've got plenty of bedrooms, don't you?

8:12Keyzie:We've only got one spare room and it's full of shit. Well, it's actually not too bad, but it's a single bed. Yeah. Will your cat be on the deck? Cheers. Oh, yes. Yeah. Oh, well, she loves it when we're gardening and stuff because we unearth all the skinks. Yes, right. And so she has an absolute ball. Yeah. Eats the little meaty bastards. Do you unearth her little steamers? True story, actually. we've buried a couple of our cats near our deck. And so while we were... Alive. Digging everything up, we were like, this is like pet cemetery here. We've got to be real careful, genuinely, that we don't dig up any of our dead pets.

8:54Yeah, that's illegal, eh? Yeah.

8:56Mike Minogue:Did you manage to find any of them? No. Oh, that's good.

9:02Keyzie:But if you are keen, 3483. We'll get it going, eh, fellas? That's a great competition, man. What an opportunity. It's a winner. The weather's great. A few beersies. I love the fact that it's 2025, which suggests it's going to happen again next year.

9:18Mike Minogue:The Hauraki Big Show with Jace, Mike and Keezy. Tune in weekdays at four on Radio Hauraki.

9:24Keyzie:The offspring there on the Radio Hauraki Big Show this Wednesday afternoon. The time is 4.40.

9:30Mike Minogue:Fellas, exciting times. Giga Little is returning thanks to our mates at Super Liquor. they've given us 10 grand cash to give away. So good. Yeah. Just chill, man. I haven't even told you how it works. Well, already massively excited. I thought it was free. Well, it is free. Basically, they want to get people gigging. So if you hear the roar of the crowd, it's going to be playing from Monday onwards on Radio Hauraki. Then call 0800-HAURAKI, and you can pretty much instantly get$250 to put towards your next gig. Wow. It's all cheers to gigs. Cheers to Super Liquor. Cheers to that.

10:04Keyzie:So good, man. Cheers. Hey, fellas, we were talking about the dawning of spring yesterday, weren't we? Yeah. How are you finding the old daylight savings? Of course, that kicked in on Horty J's birthday. My pleasure. My pleasure, everyone. Are you taking credit for daylight savings? Well, basically, yes. It happened on my birthday, Kesey. So, yes, I am.

10:21Mike Minogue:Is that why you seem to age...

10:23Keyzie:Backwards?

10:24Mike Minogue:...differently to anyone else?

10:25Keyzie:Yeah, totally. Because my birthday falls on daylight savings. So, you turn it back. So, I put my age back an hour or, consequently, back a year. Right, okay. Yeah, I was one of those, there's only, I think, about 3 % of the population that that happens to. Right. Where your birthday falls every single year on daylight savings and thus every single year. Well, after 18, every single year after that, you get put back a year.

10:52Mike Minogue:Right, so if you're at the end of daylight savings, you double the age you actually are.

10:56Keyzie:Correct, yes.

10:57Mike Minogue:Because you put your year forward an extra year.

10:59Keyzie:So by the end of when daylight savings stops, Yes. I'll actually be 78.

11:06Mike Minogue:Yeah, that makes sense. Yeah, yeah. Right, okay, yeah, yeah. That makes perfect sense. But does it go back an hour or does it go back a year?

11:13Keyzie:In my case, it goes back a year. Right. But in terms of daylight savings, you put it forward an hour. And do you get to relive that whole year all over again, but you know what's going to happen? Like Groundhog Day? Well, no, this is the very special thing about it, is a completely different year. Oh, right. So you just get younger, but you're living in the same timeline as everybody else. Correct. Man.

11:39Mike Minogue:But you're still ageing though, right?

11:42Keyzie:Well, at the end of daylight savings, I am. Yes. You know what I mean? So when you put the clocks forward again, I go to 78. So it's like being put on pause while it's on daylight savings. Right. Is this a similar sort of thing to if you're born on February the 29th in a leap year? Very similar. Yeah, yeah. After 100 years, you'll be five. Yes. No, 25. Five.

12:04Mike Minogue:Huh? Right, okay. I think I'm starting to pick it up now. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So when winter comes back around autumn and daylight savings comes back, you are 78. 78, yeah. Wow, okay. That explains it. So that's double the age years now. What? Which is 39.

12:20Keyzie:But that's taking into account that I've put it back a year.

12:24Mike Minogue:So how old were you? Let's just say you were born on the day before daylight savings. How old would you be?

12:31Keyzie:Oh, look, it's hard to say because it gets so mixed up over the years. Probably I'd be probably in the mid-50s.

12:38Mike Minogue:Wow, that's unbelievable.

12:40Keyzie:Could you imagine Hoardy J in his mid... I mean, wouldn't it be fun to project forward and see Hoardy J in his mid-50s? I can't picture him. No, neither can I. Can you imagine the amount of effing and jeffing that would be going on?

12:57Mike Minogue:I reckon you'd be a massive pain in the arse in your mid-50s. The Hauraki Big Show with Jace, Mike and Keezy. Tune in weekdays at four on Radio Hauraki.

13:06Keyzie:Tom Petty there on the Radio Hauraki Big Show this Thursday evening. Fellas, I've got a question for you, and it perplexes me. Does it bug you? Slightly. All right.

13:19Mike Minogue:It's been bugging me.

13:24Keyzie:I was watching a movie today. Aliens the Earth. That's what it was called.

13:36Keyzie:And it struck me when I was looking at the alien that they always look the same. You know what I mean? And presumably no one's ever seen an alien. Wow. So why do we always, they've always got massive heads and weird bodies. Where does that come from? You don't know? No. Oh. Because no one's ever seen an alien. So it seems to be the go-to for every single alien is massive head, weird body. Big eyes? Big eyes. Yeah. You know what I mean? I mean, where is that from if we've never seen one? What's that about? And it bugs me. I assume. I mean, because you're using your imagination, right? So can't you imagine a different type of alien?

14:24Keyzie:Yeah.

14:25Mike Minogue:So like in The Simpsons where the two aliens have tentacles and one eye, do you prefer that? Like a really weird version? Sure, why not? Or like the aliens in Alien vs Predator.

14:35Keyzie:Well, because we don't know what an alien looks like, so it can be anything we want it to be.

14:39Mike Minogue:So are you describing the traditional, the cliché, big head?

14:43Keyzie:You know, the sort of big head with a sort of pointed kind of dome, cone head sort of thing.

14:50Mike Minogue:Right, okay.

14:50Keyzie:You know, big, nashy teeth and that kind of carry on.

14:53Mike Minogue:Wait, like the aliens from Alien vs. Predator? Yes. Right, that's what you've got an issue with. I thought you meant the traditional UFO guy that everyone draws, like the Roswell-looking one. The actual one, yeah, where it's a humanoid and it's got big black eyes and a little mouth and a bald head. And it's green. And it comes from, you know, it came from Area 51, Roswell, where there was sightings of aliens and they all looked exactly the same. But if you're talking about the alien from the movie Alien, those aliens only exist in the movie Alien. And no other aliens look like that ever. Because it's copyrighted and they can't have it.

15:30Keyzie:I have seen numerous films.

15:32Mike Minogue:Yeah, are they all Alien versus something or just Alien? Yeah. Or in this case, Alien versus Earth. Oh, Earth. Yeah. Okay, so the issue here is that Jace has seen multiple films in the Alien franchise and doesn't realise they're connected. But it's annoying because they always look exactly the same. It would be nice if they changed it up. Exactly. That's a really good point, Jase. The Hauraki Big Show. Weekdays from four on Radio Hauraki.
