In short
The Hauraki Big Show (Jace, Mike, Keezy) episode focuses on hosts’ ailments and New Zealanders’ “what’s wrong with you” texts. Main topic: Mogi’s worsening ear/nose/throat sinusitis and how overusing steroid nasal spray (and similar cold meds like Sudafed) can cause “bounce back” congestion, post-nasal drip, headaches, and recurring symptoms.
Key claims
Mogi says he’s been on multiple antibiotic rounds for four years; his ENT appointment is delayed four months; he’ll avoid the spray when congested because it makes things worse.
Notable examples
texts about a recurring cyst under an eyelid/skin area, a bruised/sprained foot, a head cold shared by a wife, and knee pain in cold weather.
Guests
none—only the regular hosts (Jace, Mike, Keezy) and callers/text senders.

0:06Keyzie:White Stripes there on the Hauraki Big Show this Monday evening. The time is 5.53.
0:13Mike Minogue:Fellas, a lot of texts coming in on 3483 asking why Mogi sounds terrible. Mogi, your voice is a bit weird today. What's the deal with that? Well, I've got a medical condition, Keyzie. Right. Some would say it's been a backbone. and that's one of the things. Sure. But the other thing that I've got going on, as you know, is I've been suffering for probably four years now with a pretty severe ear, nose and throat issue. I got sinusitis probably four years ago and then that's just gotten worse and worse every year. I've sort of been on three or four rounds of antibiotics every single year. I've been on medications.
0:49I've been on nasal sprays, all sorts of different things, haven't I? Yes. So I've sort of been sick every year for six months of the year. This year has been better.
0:56Mike Minogue:Yeah, you've been really good this year. I haven't been as bad as other years. But I've had an appointment with an ear, nose and throat specialist. I want to get in there and see a specialist, Keezy. And I'm still waiting for that appointment. Four months. Wow. Only takes four months to get in there. So that's, everything's working sweet. When everything's going to be tickety-boo again, probably. Yeah, that's right. It'll be brand new by then. But at this rate, maybe not. So anyway, over the weekend, I had a bit of a, a bit blocked up trying to go to sleep. And so I just thought to myself, I'll get on this Otraven spray.
1:26Now, I swear by this stuff. You put a couple of sprays up your honker there, and it completely clears your sinuses out, no matter how stuff's up there. I've used it before. It's amazing. It is absolutely incredible. It's a revelation when you discover it.
1:38Mike Minogue:It's a steroid? It is a steroid, and what it does is it contracts the blood vessels in your nasal cavities and your sinuses there.
1:46Keyzie:There'd be some big bastard bloody blood vessels in there with a U2. The honkers you're running.
1:53Mike Minogue:Yeah, yeah, yeah.
1:59And so it constricts that. The problem with it is when you use it, you get a bounce back. What they call a bounce back, which means it'll get – potentially it'll get worse on the other side, but generally only if you overuse it, so you use it for more days than you should. So that was the first day that I'd used it in a couple of months. But I woke up the next day and I sounded like this. Wow. Bloody beautiful. Cough. You get a post-nasal drip, they call it, kesey, which is where you get this penis snot dripping down the back of your throat and it irritates. Oh, that's so great. Hang on a minute, just a snot just down the back of your throat there and irritates the throat there.
2:30So you're coughing, you've got the runny nose, then you've got a full-on headache and full congestion in the sinuses as well. So it's a horrible bastard thing and it recurs. So what I've worked out is it's actually that the problem is the medicine. Yeah. So I've got to just backbone my way through any time I get these congested sinuses and not take the medicine because if I take the medicine, it just ends up making it worse if you can wrap your head around that.
2:56Mike Minogue:Is that from a sort of, you know, a recent history of maybe using it too much, those medicines? It's potentially that. Yeah, well, it makes sense because it's also your Sudafed and your cold medications. Yeah, they do the same thing. They contract those blood vessels in your honker and, yeah, it makes it worse. And, I mean, you're sucking up a lot of stuff in there. Yeah, yeah, it's hard.
3:21Keyzie:You know, I mean, it is a huge vacuum. It is. It is. Well, look. I mean.
3:27Mike Minogue:Carry on.
3:28Keyzie:What I'm just saying, I mean, there's a lot going up there.
3:32Mike Minogue:Yeah, yeah, yeah.
3:33Keyzie:There's a big amount of airflow.
3:35Mike Minogue:It's got a big honker, AJ. Big honker. Well, that's good. I was talking about both of you, but yeah. To be honest, I was concerned that you'd just been on the piss all weekend. Oh, no, no, no. No, just Friday night, I got to bed about 7 o 'clock in the morning. And I was thinking to myself, geez, my nose is feeling a bit stuffy, eh? What about Saturday? Because I was a bit concerned that maybe you got on the durries again. Yeah, you hadn't done that, have you? About a packet and a half. Oh, okay. But I don't think it's related. No. No, I don't think so. The Hauraki Big Show, weekdays from four on Radio Hauraki.
4:08Keyzie:Yes, indeed. ACDC there on the Hauraki Big Show this Tuesday evening. Now, earlier in the show, we were talking about the fact that all of us on the Big Show I was suffering some sort of physical ailment at the moment. Mogi's voice and throat is gone. Yeah, it's gotten worse and worse over the course of the show. I thought I was on the app today. Yes. But, you know, it turns out doing a show for three-plus hours and running your yap isn't the best way to get better quick. Sure.
4:36Mike Minogue:Plus, you've got a hernia, Jase, which has popped out. Yeah, it's popped out. Yeah, and it has. We've seen it. It's a bit painful. My throat's a wee bit weird, but it's actually come right. On that note, we should actually go about naming your hernia, Jase, because it does have a real personality. It does, doesn't it? It's cute. We might get into that tomorrow. I think it's gross. It's cute. But with that in mind, we invented a new segment. What's wrong with you, New Zealand? Yeah, that's right. What's wrong with you, New Zealand? Where you text in with a whole lot of things that are wrong or ailing you at the moment.
5:10Mike Minogue:We sort of read them out and then potentially help you with those issues. Yes. For example, this one here, fellas. This is from Ben. G'day, guys. Slight ailment. I have a troublesome hair follicle right on my underline. It loves to grow deep in the dermis. Every six months or so, she flares up into a full-blown cyst. Oh, nice. You know about cysts, Jase. Didn't they used to call you Mr. Cyst? They did, yeah. They used to call you Cysty Boy.
5:40Keyzie:Yeah, Cysty Boy, Mr. Cyst. Mr. Sister. That's why I'm totally nude in that area now.
5:48Mike Minogue:To be honest, yeah, because if your undies there are constantly rubbing, get rid of the undies. They are wax. Yeah, yeah, yeah. What do you think, Mo? Have you ever had a cyst? Not a cyst so much, but I've had my fair share of skin ailments. I'd recommend getting in there with the laser. As you guys know, I've done my downstairs and surrounding areas, and the laser treatment would be absolutely the way to go for something like this. Get rid of it. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Tie things up there. G'day there, fellas.
6:15Keyzie:This is from Jack. If you're running a really big bush there, eh, Keasy, you were saying.
6:21Mike Minogue:What was that, Mr. Sis? That I'm running a what? A big bush. A big bush. Oh, nah, not me, man. Are you all G on that front? Yeah, it's like a well-manicured lawn. It's beautiful. Is it beautiful? Yeah, you can run around barefoot on it. Do you trim the edges? Yeah, weed whacker. It's like a little lawn with a little garden gnome sitting there, is it? it's like a lawn with a big proud oak tree yeah yeah anyway back to the text fellas
6:50Mike Minogue:g'day there guys I bruised and sprained my foot stepping off the deck which is it both he bruised and sprained it because when you sprain it you get bruising
7:00Keyzie:yeah okay
7:02Mike Minogue:okay there's no support there I mean strap it maybe g'day fellas I'm at work after a three day bender
7:08Keyzie:Oh yeah, that's a shocker Yeah, that's a shocker
7:13Mike Minogue:So what are we doing, just saying that things are a shocker Are we helping them? Is there any sort of Well, it's taken on a little bit of a vibe of what's on the dinner with me Which we have just done It sounds yummy Yeah, that sounds good, man I have a stinking head cold that my wife unselfishly shared with me Green ginger wine is helping though Yeah, green ginger wine. I like the sound of that. I haven't really come across a cold. What I'm writing at the moment is some kind of a heinous infection. But I haven't really come across any kind of head colds or anything this year. I haven't really come across any people that are suffering from them or flus.
7:54Because it's been such a beautiful winter. But can I say that when I went away down to Topo, and pretty much as soon as you get out of Auckland, it's as cold as a bastard. It is cold, yeah. That's true. Auckland is on another planet in terms of temperature in this country.
8:09Mike Minogue:What about this one from a chap in Napier? I'm sick of my knees aching due to the cold. I've taken to cutting the ends off my socks so I can pull them up to my balls to keep my legs warm under my jeans.
8:21Keyzie:I like that. I like the innovation there.
8:23Mike Minogue:Yeah, good stuff. The Hauraki Big Show with Jace, Mike and Keezy. Tune in weekdays at 4 on Radio Hauraki.
8:32Keyzie:Kings of Leon there on the Radio Hauraki big show this Wednesday evening. The time is 10 minutes to 6 o 'clock.
8:39Mike Minogue:Fellas, this Monday, a huge, huge occasion happens at Radio Hauraki. The voting begins for the GOAT. The countdown, the greatest song. Wow, back already. The greatest song of all time. It is happening once again. Voting does start Monday. It is for real music connoisseurs. All you need to do is sort the fillers from the absolute killers, is what it's got written here. So get ready to vote, all right? There'll be prizes up for grabs and, of course, one hell of a musical countdown. Yeah, man, it's going to be awesome. I love me a bit of goat. I do really enjoy the selection process, and Dilly, who's working on a lot of the back end stuff for this, it's slicker than ever.
9:15Mike Minogue:So Dilly's working on the back end. Dilly's working at the back end. It's a technical term, Keezy, the back end. Right, and what about Dilly? That's very technical. Yeah, yeah. His name's Dilly. Yeah, it's just a nickname, isn't it? Yeah. Yeah. Hey, fellas, I am heading out after the show tonight, over to your in-laws place, Jase. Yes. Because they have very, it was lovely to be thought of, I'm very honoured, I am house sitting for them for the month.
9:40Keyzie:They were very taken with you, Pug-san, and your lovely partner. Did you say for a month? For a month. Yeah, for a month. Wow. Pug-san, it's almost like you're turning into a professional house sitter.
9:55Mike Minogue:I honestly would love that. I have friends that have house sat all over the world and used it as a means of travelling. It's probably good practice, to be honest, and great to have a couple of references if I ever decide to go down that road.
10:05Keyzie:Can I just ask, actually, before you ask your question, because you just house sat for me, did you leave a plug behind?
Read the full transcript
10:13Mike Minogue:Oh, like a charger? No. So you're going to the in-laws tonight as like a sort of, like, oh, hey, here's our house. Yes. Yeah, it's sort of like a show. Hang on, he hasn't answered my question. Well, I think that's an off-air question, Jase. What? Okay. Did you, Pugs? Jase, if I was to leave something behind at your house, it would be to send a message. Yeah, a steamer. Okay. Yes, so I'm going there tonight, and I think we're going to have, like, they've invited us around for a drink, not dinner or anything like that, but just to kind of go over the house and all the ins and outs, the plants, the bin days, whatever, all that admin-y sort of stuff.
10:47Mike Minogue:Yes. Probably could be done over text. So you're going around to meet the plants. Probably could be done over text, but I'm really looking forward to it regardless. Beautiful house, Kezi. It is a lovely house. Very beautiful, architecturally designed place. One thing, I want to make a good impression, obviously, because as you say, they were very excited to have me. I wouldn't say they were really excited. Really? I think you're about eighth on the list. Really excited. That many people off. I want to know what to take with me. So I've met them before. We had wine. I don't know if you guys know this.
11:19Mike Minogue:I'm off the beers at the moment for two weeks. So obviously I'm not going to be drinking wine. But it's like, what do I take to their place to kind of make a good impression? Well, your missus will be hammered, though. Yeah, probably. Look, so I wouldn't take her.
11:38Keyzie:They love their wines. They've got an extensive cellar. So just something like a lovely$40,$50 Pinot Gris, maybe a buttery chard.
11:53Mike Minogue:A margarine, like a cab sav?
11:56Keyzie:Yeah, a cab sav. Right, so that or that. A combination of all three, actually. That would really impress them. What we always do when we go over there too is we take like a cheese board, cold meats. You take a cheese board? Well, yeah. You take the board as well? Yeah, we take the board because they don't actually have any boards. You'll find that out when you're looking after the place. We take your cheeses Your cold meats Your pickles Your condiments But just keep it simple Yeah
12:26Mike Minogue:Because I don't want to make The kind of impression You've made on your in-laws No basically Whatever Jason usually does Do the opposite Go the other way Yeah so take hot meats Don't take any cheese Use their board Take beers instead of wines Yeah 100 % Cool perfect Good luck Pugs
12:39Keyzie:I'm a little bit anxious About you looking after Their place actually Why's that? Well I just know you really well and what you get up to. And the cameras don't lie, Pug-san. I'll just say that. Have you got cameras? Yeah, I told them I had cameras. Yeah, right.
12:55Mike Minogue:You probably leant into it now, you have.
13:01Mike Minogue:Here's Ramones. The Hauraki Big Show with Jase, Mike and Keezy. Tune in weekdays at four on Radio Hauraki.
13:09Keyzie:Yes, indeed, Aussie Osborne there on the Radio Hauraki Big Show this Thursday evening. Fellas, I've got a little bit of gardening chat. Play the sting.
13:20Mike Minogue:Yeah. Gardening chat with the big show. With old Mogey. Huge, huge. Fellas, as you know, over the years, there's been a little bit of drama around at old Mogey's house. My wife loves buying herbs. You know, you get them in the little bottles from the supermarket. And then just leave it, quite literally leaving them to die. And it happens over and over and over again. And I don't know why we bother. Just get the ones in the little containers there. And just don't buy a plant just to kill it. And this has happened, if it's not 80 times, I can't think how many. Honestly, over the years, it would have been at least.
13:57And so then it came to a head over Mother's Day, where she said that she wanted herbs. She wanted herbs for Mother's Day. So I go down and buy probably 10 little pottles of herbs, bring them home in a cardboard box where they sat on the lawn until they died. Yep. Like absolutely zero attempt to plant them, to do, to what, nothing, just sat on the middle of the lawn and just died. And I was just like, I'm not doing anything about this. This is my gift, our gift to you. What are you going to do about it? And then I hit her up about it when they were dead. And I said, you know, what's going on here?
14:39She goes, oh, well, there's no pot. There's no pot. I was like, well, why don't you buy one? Why don't you ask me to buy you one? But no, no, just sit there and die. So anyway, I've banned her now and my daughter from doing anything with the herb. So I've created a herb garden. And it is absolutely going off. Really? I've got my parsley, I've got my Italian parsley, and I've got my chives. And it is absolutely roaring. Just those three. That's it. Well, because in winter, there's only some that go, well, you can add your thyme and your rosemary to that. But I'm not a big user of either of those.
15:09Mike Minogue:And rosemary will take over. Yeah, well, they have a tea. It does. My dream is that I see a herb at my house at some point in my life that takes over instead of just rots and dies. Yes. So I've been out there every day. On the weekend, my daughter, I'll make her scrambled eggs. It's got chives in it or parsley in it. Every day I have eggs, I've got parsley in it, chives in it. Yes. I'm absolutely loving it. I'm over the moon. Anyway, I go out there today to get some. My cat, Birdshit Chris, is in there, absolutely draining one all over my herbs. Cats love pissing on chives.
15:48Keyzie:And they just love herb patches in general, because especially if you're laying down new soil, it's like the perfect litter box. I walked out the door, the door opened, and my cat froze and looked at me like absolutely busted. Yes. I've been doing this for weeks. Have you been rinsing the herbs? No. Oh, great. I'll be honest with you, I haven't. So you've been eating piss. I've been eating bird shit crisp piss. I tell you what. Which is a weird sentence. Cat urine, though, Mogi, on the plus side is rich in iron. Oh, is it? Yes, so it's not too bad. Yeah. I have a little shooter every morning.
